Cycles of apostasy and deliverance in pre-monarchic Israel

A series of stories about charismatic deliverers — Deborah, Gideon, Samson, and others — who arose during the turbulent centuries between Joshua and the rise of the monarchy. The book frames Israelite history as a recurring cycle of apostasy, oppression, and rescue.

第1章

ヨシュアが死んだ後、イスラエルの人々は主に問うて言った、「わたしたちのうち、だれが先に攻め上って、カナンびとと戦いましょうか」。

And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked of Jehovah, saying, Who shall go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?

主は言われた、「ユダが上るべきである。わたしはこの国を彼の手にわたした」。

And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

ユダはその兄弟シメオンに言った、「わたしと一緒に、わたしに割り当てられた領地へ上って行って、カナンびとと戦ってください。そうすればわたしもあなたと一緒に、あなたに割り当てられた領地へ行きましょう」。そこでシメオンは彼と一緒に行った。

And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

ユダが上って行くと、主は彼らの手にカナンびととペリジびととをわたされたので、彼らはベゼクで一万人を撃ち破り、

And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

またベゼクでアドニベゼクに会い、彼と戦ってカナンびととペリジびととを撃ち破った。

And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

アドニベゼクは逃げたが、彼らはそのあとを追って彼を捕え、その手足の親指を切り放った。

But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

アドニベゼクは言った、「かつて七十人の王たちが手足の親指を切られて、わたしの食卓の下で、くずを拾ったことがあったが、神はわたしがしたように、わたしに報いられたのだ」。人々は彼をエルサレムへ連れて行ったが、彼はそこで死んだ。

And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered [their food] under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

ユダの人々はエルサレムを攻めて、これを取り、つるぎをもってこれを撃ち、町に火を放った。

And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

その後、ユダの人々は山地とネゲブと平地に住んでいるカナンびとと戦うために下ったが、

And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the South, and in the lowland.

ユダはまずヘブロンに住んでいるカナンびとを攻めて、セシャイとアヒマンとタルマイを撃ち破った。ヘブロンのもとの名はキリアテ・アルバであった。

And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba); and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

またそこから進んでデビルの住民を攻めた。（デビルのもとの名はキリアテ・セペルであった。）

And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (Now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.)

時にカレブは言った、「キリアテ・セペルを撃って、これを取る者には、わたしの娘アクサを妻として与えるであろう」。

And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

カレブの弟ケナズの子オテニエルがそれを取ったので、カレブは娘アクサを妻として彼に与えた。

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb`s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

アクサは行くとき彼女の父に畑を求めることを夫にすすめられたので、アクサがろばから降りると、カレブは彼女に言った、「あなたは何を望むのか」。

And it came to pass, when she came [unto him], that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?

アクサは彼に言った、「わたしに贈り物をください。あなたはわたしをネゲブの地へやられるのですから、泉をもください」。それでカレブは上の泉と下の泉とを彼女に与えた。

And she said unto him, Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

モーセのしゅうとであるケニびとの子孫はユダの人々と共に、しゅろの町からアラドに近いネゲブにあるユダの野に上ってきて、アマレクびとと共に住んだ。

And the children of the Kenite, Moses` brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.

そしてユダはその兄弟シメオンと共に行って、ゼパテに住んでいたカナンびとを撃ち、それをことごとく滅ぼした。これによってその町の名はホルマと呼ばれた。

And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

ユダはまたガザとその地域、アシケロンとその地域、エクロンとその地域を取った。

Also Judah took Gaza with the border thereof, and Ashkelon with the border thereof, and Ekron with the border thereof.

主がユダと共におられたので、ユダはついに山地を手に入れたが、平地に住んでいた民は鉄の戦車をもっていたので、これを追い出すことができなかった。

And Jehovah was with Judah; and drove out [the inhabitants of] the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

人々はモーセがかつて言ったように、ヘブロンをカレブに与えたので、カレブはその所からアナクの三人の子を追い出した。

And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken: and he drove out thence the three sons of Anak.

ベニヤミンの人々はエルサレムに住んでいたエブスびとを追い出さなかったので、エブスびとは今日までベニヤミンの人々と共にエルサレムに住んでいる。

And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

ヨセフの一族はまたベテルに攻め上ったが、主は彼らと共におられた。

And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el; and Jehovah was with them.

すなわちヨセフの一族は人をやってベテルを探らせた。この町のもとの名はルズであった。

And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth-el. (Now the name of the city beforetime was Luz.)

その斥候たちは町から出てきた人を見て、言った、「どうぞこの町にはいる道を教えてください。そうすればわたしたちはあなたに恵みを施しましょう」。

And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.

彼が町にはいる道を教えたので、彼らはつるぎをもって町を撃った。しかし、かの人とその家族は自由に去らせた。

And he showed them the entrance into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.

その人はヘテびとの地に行って町を建て、それをルズと名づけた。これは今日までその名である。

And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.

マナセはベテシャンとその村里の住民、タアナクとその村里の住民、ドルとその村里の住民、イブレアムとその村里の住民、メギドとその村里の住民を追い出さなかったので、カナンびとは引き続いてその地に住んでいたが、

And Manasseh did not drive out [the inhabitants of] Beth-shean and its towns, nor [of] Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

イスラエルは強くなったとき、カナンびとを強制労働に服させ、彼らをことごとくは追い出さなかった。

And it came to pass, when Israel was waxed strong, that they put the Canaanites to taskwork, and did not utterly drive them out.

またエフライムはゲゼルに住んでいたカナンびとを追い出さなかったので、カナンびとはゲゼルにおいて彼らのうちに住んでいた。

And Ephraim drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

ゼブルンはキテロンの住民およびナハラルの住民を追い出さなかったので、カナンびとは彼らのうちに住んで強制労働に服した。

Zebulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to taskwork.

アセルはアッコの住民およびシドン、アヘラブ、アクジブ、ヘルバ、アピク、レホブの住民を追い出さなかったので、

Asher drove not out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;

アセルびとは、その地の住民であるカナンびとのうちに住んでいた。彼らが追い出さなかったからである。

but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

ナフタリはベテシメシの住民およびベテアナテの住民を追い出さずに、その地の住民であるカナンびとのうちに住んでいた。しかしベテシメシとベテアナテの住民は、ついに彼らの強制労働に服した。

Naphtali drove not out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to taskwork.

アモリびとはダンの人々を山地に追い込んで平地に下ることを許さなかった。

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country; for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley;

アモリびとは引き続いてハルヘレス、アヤロン、シャラビムに住んでいたが、ヨセフの一族の手が強くなったので、彼らは強制労働に服した。

but the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to taskwork.

アモリびとの境はアクラビムの坂からセラを経て上の方に及んだ。

And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

第2章

主の使がギルガルからボキムに上って言った、「わたしはあなたがたをエジプトから上らせて、あなたがたの先祖に誓った地に連れてきて、言った、『わたしはあなたと結んだ契約を決して破ることはない。

And the angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you:

あなたがたはこの国の住民と契約を結んではならない。彼らの祭壇をこぼたなければならない』と。しかし、あなたがたはわたしの命令に従わなかった。あなたがたは、なんということをしたのか。

and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this?

それでわたしは言う、『わたしはあなたがたの前から彼らを追い払わないであろう。彼らはかえってあなたがたの敵となり、彼らの神々はあなたがたのわなとなるであろう』と」。

Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be [as thorns] in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

主の使がこれらの言葉をイスラエルのすべての人々に告げたので、民は声をあげて泣いた。

And it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

それでその所の名をボキムと呼んだ。そして彼らはその所で主に犠牲をささげた。

And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto Jehovah.

ヨシュアが民を去らせたので、イスラエルの人々はおのおのその領地へ行って土地を獲た。

Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

民はヨシュアの在世中も、またヨシュアのあとに生き残った長老たち、すなわち主がかつてイスラエルのために行われたすべての大いなるわざを見た人々の在世中も主に仕えた。

And the people served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Jehovah that he had wrought for Israel.

こうして主のしもべヌンの子ヨシュアは百十歳で死んだ。

And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.

人々は彼をエフライムの山地のガアシ山の北のテムナテ・ヘレスにある彼の領地内に葬った。

And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

そしてその時代の者もまたことごとくその先祖たちのもとにあつめられた。その後ほかの時代が起ったが、これは主を知らず、また主がイスラエルのために行われたわざをも知らなかった。

And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, that knew not Jehovah, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel.

イスラエルの人々は主の前に悪を行い、もろもろのバアルに仕え、

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim;

かつてエジプトの地から彼らを導き出された先祖たちの神、主を捨てて、ほかの神々すなわち周囲にある国民の神々に従い、それにひざまずいて、主の怒りをひき起した。

and they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked Jehovah to anger.

すなわち彼らは主を捨てて、バアルとアシタロテに仕えたので、

And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

主の怒りがイスラエルに対して燃え、かすめ奪う者の手にわたして、かすめ奪わせ、かつ周囲のもろもろの敵の手に売られたので、彼らは再びその敵に立ち向かうことができなかった。

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that despoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

彼らがどこへ行っても、主の手は彼らに災をした。これは主がかつて言われ、また主が彼らに誓われたとおりで、彼らはひどく悩んだ。

Whithersoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had spoken, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed.

その時、主はさばきづかさを起して、彼らをかすめ奪う者の手から救い出された。

And Jehovah raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that despoiled them.

しかし彼らはそのさばきづかさにも従わず、かえってほかの神々を慕ってそれと姦淫を行い、それにひざまずき、先祖たちが主の命令に従って歩んだ道を、いちはやく離れ去って、そのようには行わなかった。

And yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; [but] they did not so.

主が彼らのためにさばきづかさを起されたとき、そのさばきづかさの在世中、主はさばきづかさと共におられて、彼らを敵の手から救い出された。これは彼らが自分をしえたげ悩ました者のゆえに、うめき悲しんだので、主が彼らをあわれまれたからである。

And when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

しかしさばきづかさが死ぬと、彼らはそむいて、先祖たちにまさって悪を行い、ほかの神々に従ってそれに仕え、それにひざまずいてそのおこないをやめず、かたくなな道を離れなかった。

But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.

それで主はイスラエルに対し激しく怒って言われた、「この民はわたしがかつて先祖たちに命じた契約を犯し、わたしの命令に従わないゆえ、

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;

わたしもまたヨシュアが死んだときに残しておいた国民を、この後、彼らの前から追い払わないであろう。

I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;

これはイスラエルが、先祖たちの守ったように主の道を守ってそれに歩むかどうかをわたしが試みるためである」。

that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

それゆえ主はこれらの国民を急いで追い払わずに残しておいて、ヨシュアの手にわたされなかったのである。

So Jehovah left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

第3章

すべてカナンのもろもろの戦争を知らないイスラエルの人々を試みるために、主が残しておかれた国民は次のとおりである。

Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, even as many [of Israel] as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

これはただイスラエルの代々の子孫、特にまだ戦争を知らないものに、それを教え知らせるためである。

only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof:

すなわちペリシテびとの五人の君たちと、すべてのカナンびとと、シドンびとおよびレバノン山に住んで、バアル・ヘルモン山からハマテの入口までを占めていたヒビびとなどであって、

[namely], the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath.

これらをもってイスラエルを試み、主がモーセによって先祖たちに命じられた命令に、彼らが従うかどうかを知ろうとされたのである。

And they were [left], to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

しかるにイスラエルの人々はカナンびと、ヘテびと、アモリびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとのうちに住んで、

And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

彼らの娘を妻にめとり、また自分たちの娘を彼らのむすこに与えて、彼らの神々に仕えた。

and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.

こうしてイスラエルの人々は主の前に悪を行い、自分たちの神、主を忘れて、バアルおよびアシラに仕えた。

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgat Jehovah their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth.

そこで主はイスラエルに対して激しく怒り、彼らをメソポタミヤの王クシャン・リシャタイムの手に売りわたされたので、イスラエルの人々は八年の間、クシャン・リシャタイムに仕えた。

Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

しかし、イスラエルの人々が主に呼ばわったとき、主はイスラエルの人々のために、ひとりの救助者を起して彼らを救われた。すなわちカレブの弟、ケナズの子オテニエルである。

And when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb`s younger brother.

主の霊がオテニエルに臨んだので、彼はイスラエルをさばいた。彼が戦いに出ると、主はメソポタミヤの王クシャン・リシャタイムをその手にわたされたので、オテニエルの手はクシャン・リシャタイムに勝ち、

And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.

国は四十年のあいだ太平であった。ケナズの子オテニエルはついに死んだ。

And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

イスラエルの人々はまた主の前に悪をおこなった。すなわち彼らが主の前に悪をおこなったので、主はモアブの王エグロンを強めて、イスラエルに敵対させられた。

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah.

エグロンはアンモンおよびアマレクの人々を集め、きてイスラエルを撃ち、しゅろの町を占領した。

And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm-trees.

こうしてイスラエルの人々は十八年の間モアブの王エグロンに仕えた。

And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

しかしイスラエルの人々が主に呼ばわったとき、主は彼らのために、ひとりの救助者を起された。すなわちベニヤミンびと、ゲラの子、左ききのエホデである。イスラエルの人々は彼によってモアブの王エグロンに、みつぎ物を送った。

But when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. And the children of Israel sent tribute by him unto Eglon the king of Moab.

エホデは長さ一キュビトのもろ刃のつるぎを作らせ、それを衣の下、右のももの上に帯びて、

And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

モアブの王エグロンにみつぎ物をもってきた。エグロンは非常に肥えた人であった。

And he offered the tribute unto Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man.

エホデがみつぎ物をささげ終ったとき、彼はみつぎ物をになってきた民を帰らせ、

And when he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people that bare the tribute.

かれ自身はギルガルに近い石像のある所から引きかえして言った、「王よ、わたしはあなたに申しあげる機密をもっています」。そこで王は「さがっておれ」と言ったので、かたわらに立っている者は皆出て行った。

But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king. And he said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

エホデが王のところにはいって来ると、王はひとりで涼みの高殿に座していたので、エホデが「わたしは神の命によってあなたに申しあげることがあります」と言うと、王は座から立ちあがった。

And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

そのときエホデは左の手を伸ばし、右のももからつるぎをとって王の腹を刺した。

And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:

つるぎのつかも刃と共にはいったが、つるぎを腹から抜き出さなかったので、脂肪が刃をふさいだ。そして汚物が出た。

and the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.

エホデは廊下に出て、王のおる高殿の戸を閉じ、錠をおろした。

Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room upon him, and locked them.

彼が出た後、王のしもべどもがきて、高殿の戸に錠のおろされてあるのを見て、「王はきっと涼み殿のへやで足をおおっておられるのだ」と思った。

Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, Surely he is covering his feet in the upper chamber.

しもべどもは長いあいだ待っていたが、王がなお高殿の戸を開かないので、心配してかぎをとって開いて見ると、王は床にたおれて死んでいた。

And they tarried till they were ashamed; and, behold, he opened not the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened [them], and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

エホデは彼らのためらうまに、のがれて石像のある所を過ぎ、セイラに逃げていった。

And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah.

彼が行ってエフライムの山地にラッパを吹き鳴らしたので、イスラエルの人々は彼と共に山地から下ってエホデに従った。

And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them.

エホデは彼らに言った、「わたしについてきなさい。主はあなたがたの敵モアブびとをあなたがたの手にわたされます」。そこで彼らはエホデに従って下り、ヨルダンの渡し場をおさえ、モアブびとをひとりも渡らせなかった。

And he said unto them, Follow after me; for Jehovah hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over.

そのとき彼らはモアブびとおおよそ一万人を殺した。これはいずれも肥え太った勇士であって、ひとりも、のがれた者がなかった。

And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man.

こうしてモアブはその日イスラエルの手に服し、国は八十年のあいだ太平であった。

So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

エホデの後、アナテの子シャムガルが起り、牛のむちをもってペリシテびと六百人を殺した。この人もまたイスラエルを救った。

And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox-goad: and he also saved Israel.

第4章

エホデが死んだ後、イスラエルの人々がまた主の前に悪をおこなったので、

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, when Ehud was dead.

主は、ハゾルで世を治めていたカナンの王ヤビンの手に彼らを売りわたされた。ヤビンの軍勢の長はハロセテ・ゴイムに住んでいたシセラであった。

And Jehovah sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.

彼は鉄の戦車九百両をもち、二十年の間イスラエルの人々を激しくしえたげたので、イスラエルの人々は主に向かって呼ばわった。

And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

そのころラピドテの妻、女預言者デボラがイスラエルをさばいていた。

Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, she judged Israel at that time.

彼女はエフライムの山地のラマとベテルの間にあるデボラのしゅろの木の下に座し、イスラエルの人々は彼女のもとに上ってきて、さばきをうけた。

And she dwelt under the palm-tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in the hill-country of Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.

デボラは人をつかわして、ナフタリのケデシからアビノアムの子バラクを招いて言った、「イスラエルの神、主はあなたに、こう命じられるではありませんか、『ナフタリの部族とゼブルンの部族から一万人を率い、行って、タボル山に陣をしけ。

And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded, [saying], Go and draw unto mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?

わたしはヤビンの軍勢の長シセラとその戦車と軍隊とをキション川に引き寄せて、あなたに出あわせ、彼をあなたの手にわたすであろう』」。

And I will draw unto thee, to the river Kishon, Sisera, the captain of Jabin`s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thy hand.

バラクは彼女に言った、「あなたがもし一緒に行ってくだされば、わたしは行きます。しかし、一緒に行ってくださらないならば、行きません」。

And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go; but if thou wilt not go with me, I will not go.

デボラは言った、「必ずあなたと一緒に行きます。しかしあなたは今行く道では誉を得ないでしょう。主はシセラを女の手にわたされるからです」。デボラは立ってバラクと一緒にケデシに行った。

And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding, the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honor; for Jehovah will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

バラクはゼブルンとナフタリをケデシに呼び集め、一万人を従えて上った。デボラも彼と共に上った。

And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh; and there went up ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.

時にケニびとヘベルはモーセのしゅうとホバブの子孫であるケニびとから分れて、ケデシに近いザアナイムのかしの木までも遠く行って天幕を張っていた。

Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, even from the children of Hobab the brother-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far as the oak in Zaanannim, which is by Kedesh.

アビノアムの子バラクがタボル山に上ったと、人々がシセラに告げたので、

And they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor.

シセラは自分の戦車の全部すなわち鉄の戦車九百両と、自分と共におるすべての民をハロセテ・ゴイムからキション川に呼び集めた。

And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles, unto the river Kishon.

デボラはバラクに言った、「さあ、立ちあがりなさい。きょうは主がシセラをあなたの手にわたされる日です。主はあなたに先立って出られるではありませんか」。そこでバラクは一万人を従えてタボル山から下った。

And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which Jehovah hath delivered Sisera into thy hand; is not Jehovah gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.

主はつるぎをもってシセラとすべての戦車および軍勢をことごとくバラクの前に撃ち敗られたので、シセラは戦車から飛びおり、徒歩で逃げ去った。

And Jehovah discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot, and fled away on his feet.

バラクは戦車と軍勢とを追撃してハロセテ・ゴイムまで行った。シセラの軍勢はことごとくつるぎにたおれて、残ったものはひとりもなかった。

But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; there was not a man left.

しかしシセラは徒歩で逃げ去って、ケニびとヘベルの妻ヤエルの天幕に行った。ハゾルの王ヤビンとケニびとヘベルの家とは互にむつまじかったからである。

Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

ヤエルは出てきてシセラを迎え、彼に言った、「おはいりください。主よ、どうぞうちへおはいりください。恐れるにはおよびません」。シセラが天幕にはいったので、ヤエルは毛布をもって彼をおおった。

And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And he turned in unto her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.

シセラはヤエルに言った、「どうぞ、わたしに水を少し飲ませてください。のどがかわきましたから」。ヤエルは乳の皮袋を開いて彼に飲ませ、また彼をおおった。

And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.

シセラはまたヤエルに言った、「天幕の入口に立っていてください。もし人がきて、あなたに『だれか、ここにおりますか』と問うならば『おりません』と答えてください」。

And he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and inquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No.

しかし彼が疲れて熟睡したとき、ヘベルの妻ヤエルは天幕のくぎを取り、手に槌を携えて彼に忍び寄り、こめかみにくぎを打ち込んで地に刺し通したので、彼は息絶えて死んだ。

Then Jael Heber`s wife took a tent-pin, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground; for he was in a deep sleep; so he swooned and died.

バラクがシセラを追ってきたとき、ヤエルは彼を出迎えて言った、「おいでなさい。あなたが求めている人をお見せしましょう」。彼がヤエルの天幕にはいって見ると、シセラはこめかみにくぎを打たれて倒れて死んでいた。

And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will show thee the man whom thou seekest. And he came unto her; and, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the tent-pin was in his temples.

こうしてその日、神はカナンの王ヤビンをイスラエルの人々の前に撃ち敗られた。

So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.

そしてイスラエルの人々の手はますますカナンびとの王ヤビンの上に重くなって、ついにカナンの王ヤビンを滅ぼすに至った。

And the hand of the children of Israel prevailed more and more against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

第5章

その日デボラとアビノアムの子バラクは歌って言った。

Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying,

「イスラエルの指導者たちは先に立ち、民は喜び勇んで進み出た。主をさんびせよ。

For that the leaders took the lead in Israel, For that the people offered themselves willingly, Bless ye Jehovah.

もろもろの王よ聞け、もろもろの君よ、耳を傾けよ。わたしは主に向かって歌おう、わたしはイスラエルの神、主をほめたたえよう。

Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, [even] I, will sing unto Jehovah; I will sing praise to Jehovah, the God of Israel.

主よ、あなたがセイルを出、エドムの地から進まれたとき、地は震い、天はしたたり、雲は水をしたたらせた。

Jehovah, when thou wentest forth out of Seir, When thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, The earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, Yea, the clouds dropped water.

もろもろの山は主の前に揺り動き、シナイの主、すなわちイスラエルの神、主の前に揺り動いた。

The mountains quaked at the presence of Jehovah, Even yon Sinai at the presence of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

アナテの子シャムガルのとき、ヤエルの時には隊商は絶え、旅人はわき道をとおった。

In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, In the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, And the travellers walked through byways.

イスラエルには農民が絶え、かれらは絶え果てたが、デボラよ、ついにあなたは立ちあがり、立ってイスラエルの母となった。

The rulers ceased in Israel, they ceased, Until that I Deborah arose, That I arose a mother in Israel.

人々が新しい神々を選んだとき、戦いは門に及んだ。イスラエルの四万人のうちに、盾あるいは槍の見られたことがあったか。

They chose new gods; Then was war in the gates: Was there a shield or spear seen Among forty thousand in Israel?

わたしの心は民のうちの喜び勇んで進み出たイスラエルのつかさたちと共にある。主をさんびせよ。

My heart is toward the governors of Israel, That offered themselves willingly among the people: Bless ye Jehovah.

茶色のろばに乗るもの、毛氈の上にすわるもの、および道を歩むものよ、共に歌え。

Tell [of it], ye that ride on white asses, Ye that sit on rich carpets, And ye that walk by the way.

楽人の調べは水くむ所に聞える。かれらはそこで主の救を唱え、イスラエルの農民の救を唱えている。その時、主の民は門に下って行った。

Far from the noise of archers, in the places of drawing water, There shall they rehearse the righteous acts of Jehovah, [Even] the righteous acts of his rule in Israel. Then the people of Jehovah went down to the gates.

起きよ、起きよ、デボラ。起きよ、起きよ、歌をうたえ。立てよ、バラク、とりこを捕えよ、アビノアムの子よ。

Awake, awake, Deborah; Awake, awake, utter a song: Arise, Barak, and lead away thy captives, thou son of Abinoam.

その時、残った者は尊い者のように下って行き、主の民は勇士のように下って行った。

Then came down a remnant of the nobles [and] the people; Jehovah came down for me against the mighty.

彼らはエフライムから出て谷に進み、兄弟ベニヤミンはあなたの民のうちにある。マキルからはつかさたちが下って行き、ゼブルンからは指揮を執るものが下って行った。

Out of Ephraim [came down] they whose root is in Amalek; After thee, Benjamin, among thy peoples; Out of Machir came down governors, And out of Zebulun they that handle the marshal`s staff.

イッサカルの君たちはデボラと共におり、イッサカルはバラクと同じく、直ちにそのあとについて谷に突進した。しかしルベンの氏族は大いに思案した。

And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; As was Issachar, so was Barak; Into the valley they rushed forth at his feet. By the watercourses of Reuben There were great resolves of heart.

なぜ、あなたは、おりの間にとどまって、羊の群れに笛吹くのを聞いているのか。ルベンの氏族は大いに思案した。

Why sattest thou among the sheepfolds, To hear the pipings for the flocks? At the watercourses of Reuben There were great searchings of heart.

ギレアデはヨルダンの向こうにとどまっていた。なぜ、ダンは舟のかたわらにとどまったか。アセルは浜べに座し、その波止場のかたわらにとどまっていた。

Gilead abode beyond the Jordan: And Dan, why did he remain in ships? Asher sat still at the haven of the sea, And abode by his creeks.

ゼブルンは命をすてて、死を恐れぬ民である。野の高い所におるナフタリもまたそうであった。

Zebulun was a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death, And Naphtali, upon the high places of the field.

もろもろの王たちはきて戦った。その時カナンの王たちは、メギドの水のほとりのタアナクで戦った。彼らは一片の銀をも獲なかった。

The kings came and fought; Then fought the kings of Canaan. In Taanach by the waters of Megiddo: They took no gain of money.

もろもろの星は天より戦い、その軌道をはなれてシセラと戦った。

From heaven fought the stars, From their courses they fought against Sisera.

キションの川は彼らを押し流した、激しく流れる川、キションの川。わが魂よ、勇ましく進め。

The river Kishon swept them away, That ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, march on with strength.

その時、軍馬ははせ駆けり、馬のひずめは地を踏みならした。

Then did the horsehoofs stamp By reason of the prancings, the prancings of their strong ones.

主の使は言った、『メロズをのろえ、激しくその民をのろえ、彼らはきて主を助けず、主を助けて勇士を攻めなかったからである』。

Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of Jehovah. Curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof, Because they came not to the help of Jehovah, To the help of Jehovah against the mighty.

ケニびとヘベルの妻ヤエルは、女のうちの最も恵まれた者、天幕に住む女のうち最も恵まれた者である。

Blessed above women shall Jael be, The wife of Heber the Kenite; Blessed shall she be above women in the tent.

シセラが水を求めると、ヤエルは乳を与えた。すなわち貴重な鉢に凝乳を盛ってささげた。

He asked water, [and] she gave him milk; She brought him butter in a lordly dish.

ヤエルはくぎに手をかけ、右手に重い槌をとって、シセラを打ち、その頭を砕き、粉々にして、そのこめかみを打ち貫いた。

She put her hand to the tent-pin, And her right hand to the workmen`s hammer; And with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote through his head; Yea, she pierced and struck through his temples.

シセラはヤエルの足もとにかがんで倒れ伏し、その足もとにかがんで倒れ、そのかがんだ所に倒れて死んだ。

At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay; At her feet he bowed, he fell; Where he bowed, there he fell down dead.

シセラの母は窓からながめ、格子窓から叫んで言った、『どうして彼の車の来るのがおそいのか、どうして彼の車の歩みがはかどらないのか』。

Through the window she looked forth, and cried, The mother of Sisera [cried] through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarry the wheels of his chariots?

その侍女たちの賢い者は答え、母またみずからおのれに答えて言った、

Her wise ladies answered her, Yea, she returned answer to herself,

『彼らは獲物を得て、それを分けているのではないか、人ごとにひとり、ふたりのおなごを取り、シセラの獲物は色染めの衣、縫い取りした色染めの衣の獲物であろう。すなわち縫い取りした色染めの衣二つを、獲物としてそのくびにまとうであろう』。

Have they not found, have they not divided the spoil? A damsel, two damsels to every man; To Sisera a spoil of dyed garments, A spoil of dyed garments embroidered, Of dyed garments embroidered on both sides, on the necks of the spoil?

主よ、あなたの敵はみなこのように滅び、あなたを愛する者を太陽の勢いよく上るようにしてください」。こうして後、国は四十年のあいだ太平であった。

So let all thine enemies perish, O Jehovah: But let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

第6章

イスラエルの人々はまた主の前に悪をおこなったので、主は彼らを七年の間ミデアンびとの手にわたされた。

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

ミデアンびとの手はイスラエルに勝った。イスラエルの人々はミデアンびとのゆえに、山にある岩屋と、ほら穴と要害とを自分たちのために造った。

And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

イスラエルびとが種をまいた時には、いつもミデアンびと、アマレクびとおよび東方の民が上ってきてイスラエルびとを襲い、

And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

イスラエルびとに向かって陣を取り、地の産物を荒してガザの附近にまで及び、イスラエルのうちに命をつなぐべき物を残さず、羊も牛もろばも残さなかった。

and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

彼らが家畜と天幕を携えて、いなごのように多く上ってきたからである。すなわち彼らとそのらくだは無数であって、彼らは国を荒すためにはいってきたのであった。

For they came up with their cattle and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.

こうしてイスラエルはミデアンびとのために非常に衰え、イスラエルの人々は主に呼ばわった。

And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah.

イスラエルの人々がミデアンびとのゆえに、主に呼ばわったとき、

And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah because of Midian,

主はひとりの預言者をイスラエルの人々につかわして彼らに言われた、「イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる、『わたしはかつてあなたがたをエジプトから導き上り、あなたがたを奴隷の家から携え出し、

that Jehovah sent a prophet unto the children of Israel: and he said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

エジプトびとの手およびすべてあなたがたをしえたげる者の手から救い出し、あなたがたの前から彼らを追い払って、その国をあなたがたに与えた。

and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;

そしてあなたがたに言った、「わたしはあなたがたの神、主である。あなたがたが住んでいる国のアモリびとの神々を恐れてはならない」と。しかし、あなたがたはわたしの言葉に従わなかった』」。

and I said unto you, I am Jehovah your God; ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice.

さて主の使がきて、アビエゼルびとヨアシに属するオフラにあるテレビンの木の下に座した。時にヨアシの子ギデオンはミデアンびとの目を避けるために酒ぶねの中で麦を打っていたが、

And the angel of Jehovah came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

主の使は彼に現れて言った、「大勇士よ、主はあなたと共におられます」。

And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him, and said unto him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valor.

ギデオンは言った、「ああ、君よ、主がわたしたちと共におられるならば、どうしてこれらの事がわたしたちに臨んだのでしょう。わたしたちの先祖が『主はわれわれをエジプトから導き上られたではないか』といって、わたしたちに告げたそのすべての不思議なみわざはどこにありますか。今、主はわたしたちを捨てて、ミデアンびとの手にわたされました」。

And Gideon said unto him, Oh, my lord, if Jehovah is with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? but now Jehovah hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.

主はふり向いて彼に言われた、「あなたはこのあなたの力をもって行って、ミデアンびとの手からイスラエルを救い出しなさい。わたしがあなたをつかわすのではありませんか」。

And Jehovah looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian: have not I sent thee?

ギデオンは主に言った、「ああ主よ、わたしはどうしてイスラエルを救うことができましょうか。わたしの氏族はマナセのうちで最も弱いものです。わたしはまたわたしの父の家族のうちで最も小さいものです」。

And he said unto him, Oh, Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father`s house.

主は言われた、「しかし、わたしがあなたと共におるから、ひとりを撃つようにミデアンびとを撃つことができるでしょう」。

And Jehovah said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

ギデオンはまた主に言った、「わたしがもしあなたの前に恵みを得ていますならば、どうぞ、わたしと語るのがあなたであるというしるしを見せてください。

And he said unto him, If now I have found favor in thy sight, then show me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me.

どうぞ、わたしが供え物を携えてあなたのもとにもどってきて、あなたの前に供えるまで、ここを去らないでください」。主は言われた、「わたしはあなたがもどって来るまで待ちましょう」。

Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

そこでギデオンは自分の家に行って、やぎの子を整え、一エパの粉で種入れぬパンをつくり、肉をかごに入れ、あつものをつぼに盛り、テレビンの木の下におる彼のもとに持ってきて、それを供えた。

And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

神の使は彼に言った、「肉と種入れぬパンをとって、この岩の上に置き、それにあつものを注ぎなさい」。彼はそのようにした。

And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

すると主の使が手にもっていたつえの先を出して、肉と種入れぬパンに触れると、岩から火が燃えあがって、肉と種入れぬパンとを焼きつくした。そして主の使は去って見えなくなった。

Then the angel of Jehovah put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Jehovah departed out of his sight.

ギデオンはその人が主の使であったことをさとって言った、「ああ主なる神よ、どうなることでしょう。わたしは顔をあわせて主の使を見たのですから」。

And Gideon saw that he was the angel of Jehovah; and Gideon said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of Jehovah face to face.

主は彼に言われた、「安心せよ、恐れるな。あなたは死ぬことはない」。

And Jehovah said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

そこでギデオンは主のために祭壇をそこに築いて、それを「主は平安」と名づけた。これは今日までアビエゼルびとのオフラにある。

Then Gideon built an altar there unto Jehovah, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

その夜、主はギデオンに言われた、「あなたの父の雄牛と七歳の第二の雄牛とを取り、あなたの父のもっているバアルの祭壇を打ちこわし、そのかたわらにあるアシラ像を切り倒し、

And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Take thy father`s bullock, even the second bullock seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;

あなたの神、主のために、このとりでの頂に、石を並べて祭壇を築き、第二の雄牛を取り、あなたが切り倒したアシラの木をもって燔祭をささげなさい」。

and build an altar unto Jehovah thy God upon the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which thou shalt cut down.

ギデオンはしもべ十人を連れて、主が言われたとおりにおこなった。ただし彼は父の家族のもの、および町の人々を恐れたので、昼それを行うことができず、夜それを行った。

Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Jehovah had spoken unto him: and it came to pass, because he feared his father`s household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

町の人々が朝早く起きて見ると、バアルの祭壇は打ちこわされ、そのかたわらのアシラ像は切り倒され、新たに築いた祭壇の上に、第二の雄牛がささげられてあった。

And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

そこで彼らは互に「これはだれのしわざか」と言って問い尋ねたすえ、「これはヨアシの子ギデオンのしわざだ」と言った。

And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the Asherah that was by it.

しかしヨアシは自分に向かって立っているすべての者に言った、「あなたがたはバアルのために言い争うのですか。あるいは彼を弁護しようとなさるのですか。バアルのために言い争う者は、あすの朝までに殺されるでしょう。バアルがもし神であるならば、自分の祭壇が打ちこわされたのだから、彼みずから言い争うべきです」。

And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye contend for Baal? Or will ye save him? he that will contend for him, let him be put to death whilst [it is yet] morning: if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one hath broken down his altar.

そこでその日、「自分の祭壇が打ちこわされたのだから、バアルみずからその人と言い争うべきです」と言ったので、ギデオンはエルバアルと呼ばれた。

Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal contend against him, because he hath broken down his altar.

時にミデアンびと、アマレクびとおよび東方の民がみな集まってヨルダン川を渡り、エズレルの谷に陣を取ったが、

Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

主の霊がギデオンに臨み、ギデオンがラッパを吹いたので、アビエゼルびとは集まって彼に従った。

But the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

次に彼があまねくマナセに使者をつかわしたので、マナセびともまた集まって彼に従った。彼がまたアセル、ゼブルンおよびナフタリに使者をつかわすと、その人々も上って彼を迎えた。

And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

ギデオンは神に言った、「あなたがかつて言われたように、わたしの手によってイスラエルを救おうとされるならば、

And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken,

わたしは羊の毛一頭分を打ち場に置きますから、露がその羊の毛の上にだけあって、地がすべてかわいているようにしてください。これによってわたしは、あなたがかつて言われたように、わたしの手によってイスラエルをお救いになることを知るでしょう」。

behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken.

すなわちそのようになった。彼が翌朝早く起きて、羊の毛をかき寄せ、その毛から露を絞ると、鉢に満ちるほどの水が出た。

And it was so; for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.

ギデオンは神に言った、「わたしをお怒りにならないように願います。わたしにもう一度だけ言わせてください。どうぞ、もう一度だけ羊の毛をもってためさせてください。どうぞ、羊の毛だけをかわかして、地にはことごとく露があるようにしてください」。

And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me make trial, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

神はその夜、そうされた。すなわち羊の毛だけかわいて、地にはすべて露があった。

And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

第7章

さてエルバアルと呼ばれるギデオンおよび彼と共にいたすべての民は朝早く起き、ハロデの泉のほとりに陣を取った。ミデアンびとの陣は彼らの北の方にあり、モレの丘に沿って谷の中にあった。

Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod: and the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

主はギデオンに言われた、「あなたと共におる民はあまりに多い。ゆえにわたしは彼らの手にミデアンびとをわたさない。おそらくイスラエルはわたしに向かってみずから誇り、『わたしは自身の手で自分を救ったのだ』と言うであろう。

And Jehovah said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.

それゆえ、民の耳に触れ示して、『だれでも恐れおののく者は帰れ』と言いなさい」。こうしてギデオンは彼らを試みたので、民のうち帰った者は二万二千人あり、残った者は一万人であった。

Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.

主はまたギデオンに言われた、「民はまだ多い。彼らを導いて水ぎわに下りなさい。わたしはそこで、あなたのために彼らを試みよう。わたしがあなたに告げて『この人はあなたと共に行くべきだ』と言う者は、あなたと共に行くべきである。またわたしがあなたに告げて『この人はあなたと共に行ってはならない』と言う者は、だれも行ってはならない」。

And Jehovah said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

そこでギデオンが民を導いて水ぎわに下ると、主は彼に言われた、「すべて犬のなめるように舌をもって水をなめる者はそれを別にしておきなさい。またすべてひざを折り、かがんで水を飲む者もそうしなさい」。

So he brought down the people unto the water: and Jehovah said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.

そして手を口にあてて水をなめた者の数は三百人であった。残りの民はみなひざを折り、かがんで水を飲んだ。

And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.

主はギデオンに言われた、「わたしは水をなめた三百人の者をもって、あなたがたを救い、ミデアンびとをあなたの手にわたそう。残りの民はおのおのその家に帰らせなさい」。

And Jehovah said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand; and let all the people go every man unto his place.

そこで彼はかの三百人を留めおき、残りのイスラエルびとの手から、つぼとラッパを取り、民をおのおのその天幕に帰らせた。時にミデアンびとの陣は下の谷の中にあった。

So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man unto his tent, but retained the three hundred men: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

その夜、主はギデオンに言われた、「立てよ、下っていって敵陣に攻め入れ。わたしはそれをあなたの手にわたす。

And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Arise, get thee down into the camp; for I have delivered it into thy hand.

もしあなたが下って行くことを恐れるならば、あなたのしもべプラと共に敵陣に下っていって、

But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Purah thy servant down to the camp:

彼らの言うところを聞け。そうすればあなたの手が強くなって、敵陣に攻め下ることができるであろう」。ギデオンがしもべプラと共に下って、敵陣にある兵隊たちの前哨地点に行ってみると、

and thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thy hands be strengthened to go down into the camp. Then went he down with Purah his servant unto the outermost part of the armed men that were in the camp.

ミデアンびと、アマレクびとおよびすべての東方の民はいなごのように数多く谷に沿って伏していた。そのらくだは海べの砂のように多くて数えきれなかった。

And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is upon the sea-shore for multitude.

ギデオンがそこへ行ったとき、ある人がその仲間に夢を語っていた。その人は言った、「わたしは夢を見た。大麦のパン一つがミデアンの陣中にころがってきて、天幕に達し、それを打ち倒し、くつがえしたので、天幕は倒れ伏した」。

And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man telling a dream unto his fellow; and he said, Behold, I dreamed a dream; and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came unto the tent, and smote it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.

仲間は答えて言った、「それはイスラエルの人、ヨアシの子ギデオンのつるぎにちがいない。神はミデアンとすべての軍勢を彼の手にわたされるのだ」。

And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: into his hand God hath delivered Midian, and all the host.

ギデオンは夢の物語とその解き明かしとを聞いたので、礼拝し、イスラエルの陣営に帰り、そして言った、「立てよ、主はミデアンの軍勢をあなたがたの手にわたされる」。

And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped; and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, Arise; for Jehovah hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.

そして彼は三百人を三組に分け、手に手にラッパと、からつぼとを取らせ、つぼの中にたいまつをともさせ、

And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers.

彼らに言った、「わたしを見て、わたしのするようにしなさい。わたしが敵陣のはずれに達したとき、あなたがたもわたしのするようにしなさい。

And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.

わたしと共におる者がみなラッパを吹くと、あなたがたもまたすべての陣営の四方でラッパを吹き、『主のためだ、ギデオンのためだ』と言いなさい」。

When I blow the trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, For Jehovah and for Gideon.

こうしてギデオンと、彼と共にいた百人の者が、中更の初めに敵陣のはずれに行ってみると、ちょうど番兵を交代した時であったので、彼らはラッパを吹き、手に携えていたつぼを打ち砕いた。

So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.

すなわち三組の者がラッパを吹き、つぼを打ち砕き、左の手にはたいまつをとり、右の手にはラッパを持ってそれを吹き、「主のためのつるぎ、ギデオンのためのつるぎ」と叫んだ。

And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands wherewith to blow; and they cried, The sword of Jehovah and of Gideon.

そしておのおのその持ち場に立ち、敵陣を取り囲んだので、敵軍はみな走り、大声をあげて逃げ去った。

And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran; and they shouted, and put [them] to flight.

三百人のものがラッパを吹くと、主は敵軍をしてみな互に同志打ちさせられたので、敵軍はゼレラの方、ベテシッタおよびアベルメホラの境、タバテの近くまで逃げ去った。

And they blew the three hundred trumpets, and Jehovah set every man`s sword against his fellow, and against all the host; and the host fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.

イスラエルの人々はナフタリ、アセルおよび全マナセから集まってきて、ミデアンびとを追撃した。

And the men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian.

ギデオンは使者をあまねくエフライムの山地につかわし、「下ってきて、ミデアンびとを攻め、ベタバラに至るまでの流れを取り、またヨルダンをも取れ」と言わせた。そこでエフライムの人々はみな集まってきて、ベタバラに至るまでの流れを取り、またヨルダンをも取った。

And Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill-country of Ephraim, saying, Come down against Midian, and take before them the waters, as far as Beth-barah, even the Jordan. So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth-barah, even the Jordan.

彼らはまたミデアンびとのふたりの君オレブとゼエブを捕え、オレブをオレブ岩のほとりで殺し、ゼエブをゼエブの酒ぶねのほとりで殺した。またミデアンびとを追撃し、オレブとゼエブの首を携えてヨルダンの向こうのギデオンのもとへ行った。

And they took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.

第8章

エフライムの人々はギデオンに向かい「あなたが、ミデアンびとと戦うために行かれたとき、われわれを呼ばれなかったが、どうしてそういうことをされたのですか」と言って激しく彼を責めた。

And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him sharply.

ギデオンは彼らに言った、「今わたしのした事は、あなたがたのした事と比べものになりましょうか。エフライムの拾い集めた取り残りのぶどうはアビエゼルの収穫したぶどうにもまさるではありませんか。

And he said unto them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

神はミデアンの君オレブとゼエブをあなたがたの手にわたされました。わたしのなし得た事は、あなたがたのした事と比べものになりましょうか」。ギデオンがこの言葉を述べると、彼らの憤りは解けた。

God hath delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

ギデオンは自分に従っていた三百人と共にヨルダンに行ってこれを渡り、疲れながらもなお追撃したが、

And Gideon came to the Jordan, [and] passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing.

彼はスコテの人々に言った、「どうぞわたしに従っている民にパンを与えてください。彼らが疲れているのに、わたしはミデアンの王ゼバとザルムンナを追撃しているのですから」。

And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.

スコテのつかさたちは言った、「ゼバとザルムンナは、すでにあなたの手のうちにあるのですか。われわれはどうしてあなたの軍勢にパンを与えねばならないのですか」。

And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

ギデオンは言った、「それならば主がわたしの手にゼバとザルムンナをわたされるとき、わたしは野のいばらと、おどろをもって、あなたがたの肉を打つであろう」。

And Gideon said, Therefore when Jehovah hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

そしてギデオンはそこからペヌエルに上り、同じことをペヌエルの人々に述べると、彼らもスコテの人々が答えたように答えたので、

And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them in like manner; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.

ペヌエルの人々に言った、「わたしが安らかに帰ってきたとき、このやぐらを打ちこわすであろう」。

And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

さてゼバとザルムンナは軍勢おおよそ一万五千人を率いて、カルコルにいた。これは皆、東方の民の全軍のうち生き残ったもので、戦死した者は、つるぎを帯びているものが十二万人あった。

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the host of the children of the east; for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

ギデオンはノバとヨグベハの東の隊商の道を上って、敵軍の油断しているところを撃った。

And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.

ゼバとザルムンナは逃げたが、ギデオンは追撃して、ミデアンのふたりの王ゼバとザルムンナを捕え、その軍勢をことごとく撃ち敗った。

And Zebah and Zalmunna fled; and he pursued after them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

こうしてヨアシの子ギデオンはヘレスの坂をとおって戦いから帰り、

And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.

スコテの若者ひとりを捕えて、尋ねたところ、彼はスコテのつかさたち及び長老たち七十七人の名をギデオンのために書きしるした。

And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy and seven men.

ギデオンはスコテの人々のところへ行って言った、「あなたがたがかつて『ゼバとザルムンナはすでにあなたの手のうちにあるのか。われわれはどうしてあなたの疲れた人々にパンを与えねばならないのか』と言って、わたしをののしったそのゼバとザルムンナを見なさい」。

And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom ye did taunt me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

そして彼は、その町の長老たちを捕え、野のいばらと、おどろとを取り、それをもってスコテの人々を懲らし、

And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

またペヌエルのやぐらを打ちこわして町の人々を殺した。

And he brake down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

そしてギデオンはゼバとザルムンナに言った、「あなたがたがタボルで殺したのは、どんな人々であったか」。彼らは答えた、「彼らはあなたに似てみな王子のように見えました」。

Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

ギデオンは言った、「彼らはわたしの兄弟、わたしの母の子たちだ。主は生きておられる。もしあなたがたが彼らを生かしておいたならば、わたしはあなたがたを殺さないのだが」。

And he said, They were my brethren, the sons of my mother: as Jehovah liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

そして長子エテルに言った、「立って、彼らを殺しなさい」。しかしその若者はなお年が若かったので、恐れてつるぎを抜かなかった。

And he said unto Jether his first-born, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

そこでゼバとザルムンナは言った、「あなた自身が立って、わたしたちを撃ってください。人によってそれぞれ力も違いますから」。ギデオンは立ちあがってゼバとザルムンナを殺し、彼らのらくだの首に掛けてあった月形の飾りを取った。

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels` necks.

イスラエルの人々はギデオンに言った、「あなたはミデアンの手からわれわれを救われたのですから、あなたも、あなたの子も孫もわれわれを治めてください」。

Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son`s son also; for thou hast saved us out of the hand of Midian.

ギデオンは彼らに言った、「わたしはあなたがたを治めることはいたしません。またわたしの子もあなたがたを治めてはなりません。主があなたがたを治められます」。

And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: Jehovah shall rule over you.

ギデオンはまた彼らに言った、「わたしはあなたがたに一つの願いがあります。あなたがたのぶんどった耳輪をめいめいわたしにください」。ミデアンびとはイシマエルびとであったゆえに、金の耳輪を持っていたからである。

And Gideon said unto them, I would make a request of you, that ye would give me every man the ear-rings of his spoil. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

彼らは答えた、「わたしどもは喜んでそれをさしあげます」。そして衣をひろげ、めいめいぶんどった耳輪をその中に投げ入れた。

And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the ear-rings of his spoil.

こうしてギデオンが求めて得た金の耳輪の重さは一千七百金シケルであった。ほかに月形の飾りと耳飾りと、ミデアンの王たちの着た紫の衣およびらくだの首に掛けた首飾りなどもあった。

And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels` necks.

ギデオンはそれをもって一つのエポデを作り、それを自分の町オフラに置いた。イスラエルは皆それを慕って姦淫をおこなった。それはギデオンとその家にとって、わなとなった。

And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel played the harlot after it there; and it became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

このようにしてミデアンはイスラエルの人々に征服されて、再びその頭をあげることができなかった。そして国はギデオンの世にあるうち、四十年のあいだ太平であった。

So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

ヨアシの子エルバアルは行って自分の家に住んだ。

And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

ギデオンは多くの妻をもっていたので、自分の子供だけで七十人あった。

And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten; for he had many wives.

シケムにいた彼のめかけがまたひとりの子を産んだので、アビメレクと名づけた。

And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, and he called his name Abimelech.

ヨアシの子ギデオンは高齢に達して死に、アビエゼルびとのオフラにある父ヨアシの墓に葬られた。

And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

ギデオンが死ぬと、イスラエルの人々はまたバアルを慕って、これと姦淫を行い、バアル・ベリテを自分たちの神とした。

And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and played the harlot after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.

すなわちイスラエルの人々は周囲のもろもろの敵の手から自分たちを救われた彼らの神、主を覚えず、

And the children of Israel remembered not Jehovah their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side;

またエルバアルすなわちギデオンがイスラエルのためにしたもろもろの善行に応じて彼の家族に親切をつくすこともしなかった。

neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, [who is] Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel.

第9章

さてエルバアルの子アビメレクはシケムに行き、母の身内の人たちのもとに行って、彼らと母の父の家の一族とに言った、

And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother`s brethren, and spake with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother`s father, saying,

「どうぞ、シケムのすべての人々の耳に告げてください、『エルバアルのすべての子七十人であなたがたを治めるのと、ただひとりであなたがたを治めるのと、どちらがよいか。わたしがあなたがたの骨肉であることを覚えてください』と」。

Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are threescore and ten persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

そこで母の身内の人たちがアビメレクに代ってこれらの言葉をことごとくシケムのすべての人々の耳に告げると、彼らは心をアビメレクに傾け、「彼はわれわれの兄弟だ」と言って、

And his mother`s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

バアル・ベリテの宮から銀七十シケルを取って彼に与えた。アビメレクはそれをもって、やくざのならず者を雇って自分に従わせ、

And they gave him threescore and ten [pieces] of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.

オフラにある父の家に行って、エルバアルの子で、自分の兄弟である七十人を、一つの石の上で殺した。ただしエルバアルの末の子ヨタムは身を隠したので生き残った。

And he went unto his father`s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

そこでシケムのすべての人々とベテミロのすべての人々は集まり、行ってシケムにある石の柱のかたわらのテレビンの木のもとで、アビメレクを立てて王とした。

And all the men of Shechem assembled themselves together, and all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.

このことをヨタムに告げる者があったので、ヨタムは行ってゲリジム山の頂に立ち、大声に叫んで彼らに言った、「シケムの人々よ、わたしに聞きなさい。そうすれば神はあなたがたに聞かれるでしょう。

And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

ある時、もろもろの木が自分たちの上に王を立てようと出て行ってオリブの木に言った、『わたしたちの王になってください』。

The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree, Reign thou over us.

しかしオリブの木は彼らに言った、『わたしはどうして神と人とをあがめるために用いられるわたしの油を捨てて行って、もろもろの木を治めることができましょう』。

But the olive-tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

もろもろの木はまたいちじくの木に言った、『きてわたしたちの王になってください』。

And the trees said to the fig-tree, Come thou, and reign over us.

しかしいちじくの木は彼らに言った、『わたしはどうしてわたしの甘味と、わたしの良い果実とを捨てて行って、もろもろの木を治めることができましょう』。

But the fig-tree said unto them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

もろもろの木はまたぶどうの木に言った、『きてわたしたちの王になってください』。

And the trees said unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

しかし、ぶどうの木は彼らに言った、『わたしはどうして神と人とを喜ばせるわたしのぶどう酒を捨てて行って、もろもろの木を治めることができましょう』。

And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

そこですべての木はいばらに言った、『きてわたしたちの王になってください』。

Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

いばらはもろもろの木に言った、『あなたがたが真実にわたしを立てて王にするならば、きてわたしの陰に難を避けなさい。そうしなければ、いばらから火が出てレバノンの香柏を焼きつくすでしょう』。

And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

あなたがたがアビメレクを立てて王にしたことは、真実と敬意とをもってしたものですか。あなたがたはエルバアルとその家をよく扱い、彼のおこないに応じてしたのですか。

Now therefore, if ye have dealt truly and uprightly, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands

わたしの父はあなたがたのために戦い、自分の命を投げ出して、あなたがたをミデアンの手から救い出したのに、

(for my father fought for you, and adventured his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

あなたがたは、きょう、わたしの父の家に反抗して起り、その子七十人を一つの石の上で殺し、その腰元の子アビメレクをあなたがたの身内の者であるゆえに立てて、シケムの人々の王にしました。

and ye are risen up against my father`s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);

あなたがたが、きょう、エルバアルとその家になされたことが真実と敬意をもってしたものであるならば、アビメレクのために喜びなさい。彼もまたあなたがたのために喜ぶでしょう。

if ye then have dealt truly and uprightly with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

しかし、そうでなければ、アビメレクから火が出て、シケムの人々とベテミロとを焼きつくし、またシケムの人々とベテミロからも火が出てアビメレクを焼きつくすでしょう」。

but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

こうしてヨタムは走って逃げ去り、ベエルに行き、兄弟アビメレクの顔をさけてそこに住んだ。

And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

アビメレクは三年の間イスラエルを治めたが、

And Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.

神はアビメレクとシケムの人々の間に悪霊をおくられたので、シケムの人々はアビメレクを欺くようになった。

And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

これはエルバアルの七十人の子が受けた暴虐と彼らの血が、彼らを殺した兄弟アビメレクの上と、彼の手を強めてその兄弟を殺させたシケムの人々の上とに報いとなってきたのである。

that the violence done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and upon the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.

シケムの人々は彼に敵して待ち伏せする者を山々の頂におき、すべてその道を通り過ぎる者を略奪させた。このことがアビメレクに告げ知らされた。

And the men of Shechem set liers-in-wait for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

さてエベデの子ガアルはその身内の人々と一緒にシケムに移住したが、シケムの人々は彼を信用した。

And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.

人々は畑に出てぶどうを取り入れ、それを踏み絞って祭をし、神の宮に行って飲み食いしてアビメレクをのろった。

And they went out into the field, and gathered their vineyards, and trod [the grapes], and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

そしてエベデの子ガアルは言った、「アビメレクは何ものか。シケムのわれわれは何ものなれば彼に仕えなければならないのか。エルバアルの子とその役人ゼブルはシケムの先祖ハモルの一族に仕えたではないか。われわれはどうして彼に仕えなければならないのか。

And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve ye the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: but why should we serve him?

ああ、この民がわたしの手の下にあったらよいのだが。そうすればわたしはアビメレクをやめさせ、アビメレクに向かって『おまえの軍勢を増して出てこい』と言うであろう」。

And would that this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

町のつかさゼブルはエベデの子ガアルの言葉を聞いて怒りを発し、

And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

使者をアルマにおるアビメレクにつかわして言わせた、「エベデの子ガアルとその身内の人々がシケムにきて、町を騒がせ、あなたにそむかせようとしています。

And he sent messengers unto Abimelech craftily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren are come to Shechem; and, behold, they constrain the city [to take part] against thee.

それであなたと、あなたと共におる人々が夜のうちに行って、野に身を伏せ、

Now therefore, up by night, thou and the people that are with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

朝になって、日ののぼるとき、早く起き出て町を襲うならば、ガアルと、彼と共におる民は出てきて、あなたに抵抗するでしょう。その時あなたは機を得て、彼らを撃つことができるでしょう」。

and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and rush upon the city; and, behold, when he and the people that are with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

アビメレクと、彼と共にいたすべての民は夜のうちに起き出て、四組に分れ、身を伏せてシケムをうかがった。

And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

エベデの子ガアルが出て、町の門の入口に立ったとき、アビメレクと、彼と共にいた民が身を伏せていたところから立ちあがったので、

And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from the ambushment.

ガアルは民を見てゼブルに言った、「ごらんなさい。民が山々の頂からおりてきます」。ゼブルは彼に言った、「あなたは山々の影を人のように見るのです」。

And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the tops of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

ガアルは再び言った、「ごらんなさい。民が国の中央部からおりてきます。一組は占い師のテレビンの木の方からきます」。

And Gaal spake again and said, See, there come people down by the middle of the land, and one company cometh by the way of the oak of Meonenim.

ゼブルは彼に言った、「あなたがかつて『アビメレクは何ものか。われわれは何ものなれば彼に仕えなければならないのか』と言ったあなたの口は今どこにありますか。これはあなたが侮った民ではありませんか。今、出て彼らと戦いなさい」。

Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, that thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out now, I pray, and fight with them.

そこでガアルはシケムの人々を率い、出てアビメレクと戦ったが、

And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

アビメレクは彼を追ったので、ガアルは彼の前から逃げた。そして傷つき倒れる者が多く、門の入口にまで及んだ。

And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and there fell many wounded, even unto the entrance of the gate.

こうしてアビメレクは引き続いてアルマにいたが、ゼブルはガアルとその身内の人々を追い出してシケムにおらせなかった。

And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

翌日、民が畑に出ると、そのことがアビメレクに聞えた。

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

アビメレクは自分の民を率い、それを三組に分け、野に身を伏せて、うかがっていると、民が町から出てきたので、たちあがってこれを撃った。

And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and, behold, the people came forth out of the city; And he rose up against them, and smote them.

アビメレクと、彼と共にいた組の者は襲って行って、町の門の入口に立ち、他の二組は野にいたすべてのものを襲って、それを殺した。

And Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and the two companies rushed upon all that were in the field, and smote them.

アビメレクはその日、終日、町を攻め、ついに町を取って、そのうちの民を殺し、町を破壊して、塩をまいた。

And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that were therein: and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

シケムのやぐらの人々は皆これを聞いて、エルベリテの宮の塔にはいった。

And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard thereof, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.

シケムのやぐらの人々が皆集まったことがアビメレクに聞えたので、

And it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

アビメレクは自分と一緒にいた民をことごとく率いてザルモン山にのぼり、アビメレクは手におのを取って、木の枝を切り落し、それを取りあげて自分の肩にのせ、一緒にいた民にむかって言った、「あなたがたはわたしがしたことを見たとおりに急いでしなさい」。

And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder: and he said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

そこで民もまた皆おのおのその枝を切り落し、アビメレクに従って行って、枝を塔によせかけ、塔に火をつけて彼らを攻めた。こうしてシケムのやぐらの人々もまたことごとく死んだ。男女おおよそ一千人であった。

And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

ついでアビメレクはテベツに行き、テベツに向かって陣を張り、これを攻め取ったが、

Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

町の中に一つの堅固なやぐらがあって、すべての男女すなわち町の人々が皆そこに逃げ込み、あとを閉ざして、やぐらの屋根に上ったので、

But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut themselves in, and gat them up to the roof of the tower.

アビメレクはやぐらのもとに押し寄せてこれを攻め、やぐらの入口に近づいて、火をつけて焼こうとしたとき、

And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and drew near unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

ひとりの女がアビメレクの頭に、うすの上石を投げて、その頭骸骨を砕いた。

And a certain woman cast an upper millstone upon Abimelech`s head, and brake his skull.

アビメレクは自分の武器を持つ若者を急ぎ呼んで言った、「つるぎを抜いてわたしを殺せ。さもないと人々はわたしを、女に殺されたのだと言うであろう」。その若者が彼を刺し通したので彼は死んだ。

Then he called hastily unto the young man his armorbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and kill me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

イスラエルの人々はアビメレクの死んだのを見て、おのおの去って家に帰った。

And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

このように神はアビメレクがその兄弟七十人を殺して、自分の父に対して犯した悪に報いられた。

Thus God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren;

また神はシケムの人々のすべての悪を彼らのこうべに報いられた。こうしてエルバアルの子ヨタムののろいが、彼らに臨んだのである。

and all the wickedness of the men of Shechem did God requite upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

第10章

アビメレクの後、イッサカルの人で、ドドの子であるプワの子トラが起ってイスラエルを救った。彼はエフライムの山地のシャミルに住み、

And after Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in the hill-country of Ephraim.

二十三年の間イスラエルをさばいたが、ついに死んでシャミルに葬られた。

And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.

彼の後にギレアデびとヤイルが起って二十二年の間イスラエルをさばいた。

And after him arose Jair, the Gileadite; and he judged Israel twenty and two years.

彼に三十人の子があった。彼らは三十頭のろばに乗り、また三十の町をもっていた。ギレアデの地で今日まで、ハボテ・ヤイルと呼ばれているものがそれである。

And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havvoth-jair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead.

ヤイルは死んで、カモンに葬られた。

And Jair died, and was buried in Kamon.

イスラエルの人々は再び主の前に悪を行い、バアルとアシタロテおよびスリヤの神々、シドンの神々、モアブの神々、アンモンびとの神々、ペリシテびとの神々に仕え、主を捨ててこれに仕えなかった。

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim, and the Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Sidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook Jehovah, and served him not.

主はイスラエルに対して怒りを発し、彼らをペリシテびとの手およびアンモンびとの手に売りわたされたので、

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the children of Ammon.

彼らはその年イスラエルの人々をしえたげ悩ました。すなわち彼らはヨルダンの向こうのギレアデにあるアモリびとの地にいたすべてのイスラエルびとを十八年のあいだ悩ました。

And they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel that year: eighteen years [oppressed they] all the children of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.

またアンモンの人々がユダとベニヤミンとエフライムの氏族を攻めるためにヨルダンを渡ってきたので、イスラエルは非常に悩まされた。

And the children of Ammon passed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed.

そこでイスラエルの人々は主に呼ばわって言った、「わたしたちはわたしたちの神を捨ててバアルに仕え、あなたに罪を犯しました」。

And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, saying, We have sinned against thee, even because we have forsaken our God, and have served the Baalim.

主はイスラエルの人々に言われた、「わたしはかつてエジプトびと、アモリびと、アンモンびと、ペリシテびとからあなたがたを救い出したではないか。

And Jehovah said unto the children of Israel, [Did] not [I save you] from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

またシドンびと、アマレクびとおよびマオンびとがあなたがたをしえたげた時、わたしに呼ばわったので、あなたがたを彼らの手から救い出した。

The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried unto me, and I saved you out of their hand.

しかしあなたがたはわたしを捨てて、ほかの神々に仕えた。それゆえ、わたしはかさねてあなたがたを救わないであろう。

Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will save you no more.

あなたがたが選んだ神々に行って呼ばわり、あなたがたの悩みの時、彼らにあなたがたを救わせるがよい」。

Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.

イスラエルの人々は主に言った、「わたしたちは罪を犯しました。なんでもあなたが良いと思われることをしてください。ただどうぞ、きょう、わたしたちを救ってください」。

And the children of Israel said unto Jehovah, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; only deliver us, we pray thee, this day.

そうして彼らは自分たちのうちから異なる神々を取り除いて、主に仕えた。それで主の心はイスラエルの悩みを見るに忍びなくなった。

And they put away the foreign gods from among them, and served Jehovah; and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

時にアンモンの人々は召集されてギレアデに陣を取ったが、イスラエルの人々は集まってミヅパに陣を取った。

Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpah.

その時、民とギレアデの君たちとは互に言った、「だれがアンモンの人々に向かって戦いを始めるか。その人はギレアデのすべての民のかしらとなるであろう」。

And the people, the princes of Gilead, said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

第11章

さてギレアデびとエフタは強い勇士であったが遊女の子で、エフタの父はギレアデであった。

Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

ギレアデの妻も子供を産んだが、その妻の子供たちが成長したとき、彼らはエフタを追い出して彼に言った、「あなたはほかの女の産んだ子だから、わたしたちの父の家を継ぐことはできません」。

And Gilead`s wife bare him sons; and when his wife`s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father`s house; for thou art the son of another woman.

それでエフタはその兄弟たちのもとから逃げ去って、トブの地に住んでいると、やくざ者がエフタのもとに集まってきて、彼と一緒に出かけて略奪を事としていた。

Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

日がたって後、アンモンの人々はイスラエルと戦うことになり、

And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

アンモンの人々がイスラエルと戦ったとき、ギレアデの長老たちは行ってエフタをトブの地から連れてこようとして、

And it was so, that, when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

エフタに言った、「きて、わたしたちの大将になってください。そうすればわたしたちはアンモンの人々と戦うことができます」。

and they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

エフタはギレアデの長老たちに言った、「あなたがたはわたしを憎んで、わたしの父の家から追い出したではありませんか。しかるに今あなたがたが困っている時とはいえ、わたしのところに来るとはどういうわけですか」。

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father`s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

ギレアデの長老たちはエフタに言った、「それでわたしたちは今、あなたに帰ったのです。どうぞ、わたしたちと一緒に行って、アンモンの人々と戦ってください。そしてわたしたちとギレアデに住んでいるすべてのものとのかしらになってください」。

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

エフタはギレアデの長老たちに言った、「もしあなたがたが、わたしをつれて帰って、アンモンの人々と戦わせるとき、主が彼らをわたしにわたされるならば、わたしはあなたがたのかしらとなりましょう」。

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Jehovah deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

ギレアデの長老たちはエフタに言った、「主はあなたとわたしたちの間の証人です。わたしたちは必ずあなたの言われるとおりにしましょう」。

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.

そこでエフタはギレアデの長老たちと一緒に行った。民は彼を立てて自分たちのかしらとし、大将とした。それでエフタはミヅパで、自分の言葉をことごとく主の前に述べた。

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah.

かくてエフタはアンモンの人々の王に使者をつかわして言った、「あなたはわたしとなんのかかわりがあって、わたしのところへ攻めてきて、わたしの国と戦おうとするのですか」。

And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?

アンモンの人々の王はエフタの使者に答えた、「昔、イスラエルがエジプトから上ってきたとき、アルノンからヤボクに及び、またヨルダンに及ぶわたしの国を奪い取ったからです。それゆえ今、穏やかにそれを返しなさい」。

And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan: now therefore restore those [lands] again peaceably.

エフタはまた使者をアンモンの人々の王につかわして、

And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;

言わせた、「エフタはこう申します、『イスラエルはモアブの地も、またアンモンの人々の地も取りませんでした。

and he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

イスラエルはエジプトから上ってきたとき、荒野をとおって紅海にいたり、カデシにきました。

but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;

そしてイスラエルは使者をエドムの王につかわして「どうぞ、われわれにあなたの国を通らせてください」と言わせましたが、エドムの王は聞きいれませんでした。また同じように人をモアブの王につかわしたが、彼も承諾しなかったので、イスラエルはカデシにとどまりました。

then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

それから荒野をとおって、エドムの地とモアブの地を回り、モアブの地の東部に達し、アルノンの向こうに宿営しましたがモアブの領域には、はいりませんでした。アルノンはモアブの境だからです。

Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

次にイスラエルはヘシボンの王すなわちアモリびとの王シホンに使者をつかわし、シホンに向かって「どうぞ、われわれにあなたの国をとおって、われわれの目的地へ行かせてください」と言わせました。

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.

ところがシホンはイスラエルを信ぜず、その領域を通らせないばかりか、かえってすべての民を集めてヤハヅに陣を取り、イスラエルと戦いましたが、

But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

イスラエルの神、主はシホンとそのすべての民をイスラエルの手にわたされたので、イスラエルは彼らを撃ち破って、その土地に住んでいたアモリびとの地をことごとく占領し、

And Jehovah, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

アルノンからヤボクまでと、荒野からヨルダンまで、アモリびとの領域をことごとく占領しました。

And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.

このようにイスラエルの神、主はその民イスラエルの前からアモリびとを追い払われたのに、あなたはそれを取ろうとするのですか。

So now Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?

あなたは、あなたの神ケモシがあなたに取らせるものを取らないのですか。われわれはわれわれの神、主がわれわれの前から追い払われたものの土地を取るのです。

Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

あなたはモアブの王チッポルの子バラクにまさる者ですか。バラクはかつてイスラエルと争ったことがありますか。かつて彼らと戦ったことがありますか。

And now art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

イスラエルはヘシボンとその村里に住み、またアロエルとその村里およびアルノンの岸に沿うすべての町々に住むこと三百年になりますが、あなたがたはどうしてその間にそれを取りもどさなかったのですか。

While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?

わたしはあなたに何も悪い事をしたこともないのに、あなたはわたしと戦って、わたしに害を加えようとします。審判者であられる主よ、どうぞ、きょう、イスラエルの人々とアンモンの人々との間をおさばきください』」。

I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

しかしアンモンの人々の王はエフタが言いつかわした言葉をききいれなかった。

Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

時に主の霊がエフタに臨み、エフタはギレアデおよびマナセをとおって、ギレアデのミヅパに行き、ギレアデのミヅパから進んでアンモンの人々のところに行った。

Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

エフタは主に誓願を立てて言った、「もしあなたがアンモンの人々をわたしの手にわたされるならば、

And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

わたしがアンモンの人々に勝って帰るときに、わたしの家の戸口から出てきて、わたしを迎えるものはだれでも主のものとし、その者を燔祭としてささげましょう」。

then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah`s, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.

エフタはアンモンの人々のところに進んで行って、彼らと戦ったが、主は彼らをエフタの手にわたされたので、

So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand.

アロエルからミンニテの附近まで、二十の町を撃ち敗り、アベル・ケラミムに至るまで、非常に多くの人を殺した。こうしてアンモンの人々はイスラエルの人々の前に攻め伏せられた。

And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

やがてエフタはミヅパに帰り、自分の家に来ると、彼の娘が鼓をもち、舞い踊って彼を出迎えた。彼女はエフタのひとり子で、ほかに男子も女子もなかった。

And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

エフタは彼女を見ると、衣を裂いて言った、「ああ、娘よ、あなたは全くわたしを打ちのめした。わたしを悩ますものとなった。わたしが主に誓ったのだから改めることはできないのだ」。

And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back.

娘は言った、「父よ、あなたは主に誓われたのですから、主があなたのために、あなたの敵アンモンの人々に報復された今、あなたが言われたとおりにわたしにしてください」。

And she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon.

娘はまた父に言った、「どうぞ、この事をわたしにさせてください。すなわち二か月の間わたしをゆるし、友だちと一緒に行って、山々をゆきめぐり、わたしの処女であることを嘆かせてください」。

And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.

エフタは「行きなさい」と言って、彼女を二か月の間、出してやった。彼女は友だちと一緒に行って、山の上で自分の処女であることを嘆いたが、

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

二か月の後、父のもとに帰ってきたので、父は誓った誓願のとおりに彼女におこなった。彼女はついに男を知らなかった。

And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel,

これによって年々イスラエルの娘たちは行って、年に四日ほどギレアデびとエフタの娘のために嘆くことがイスラエルのならわしとなった。

that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

第12章

エフライムの人々は集まってザポンに行き、エフタに言った、「なぜあなたは進んで行ってアンモンの人々と戦いながら、われわれを招いて一緒に行かせませんでしたか。われわれはあなたの家に火をつけてあなたを一緒に焼いてしまいます」。

And the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward; and they said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thy house upon thee with fire.

エフタは彼らに言った、「かつてわたしとわたしの民がアンモンの人々と大いに争ったとき、あなたがたを呼んだが、あなたがたはわたしを彼らの手から救ってくれませんでした。

And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye saved me not out of their hand.

あなたがたが救ってくれないのを見たから、わたしは命がけでアンモンの人々のところへ攻めて行きますと、主は彼らをわたしの手にわたされたのです。どうしてあなたがたは、きょう、わたしのところに上ってきて、わたしと戦おうとするのですか」。

And when I saw that ye saved me not, I put my life in my hand, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and Jehovah delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?

そこでエフタはギレアデの人々をことごとく集めてエフライムと戦い、ギレアデの人々はエフライムを撃ち破った。これはエフライムが「ギレアデびとよ、あなたがたはエフライムとマナセのうちにいるエフライムの落人だ」と言ったからである。

Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye are fugitives of Ephraim, ye Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim, [and] in the midst of Manasseh.

そしてギレアデびとはエフライムに渡るヨルダンの渡し場を押えたので、エフライムの落人が「渡らせてください」と言うとき、ギレアデの人々は「あなたはエフライムびとですか」と問い、その人がもし「そうではありません」と言うならば、

And the Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And it was so, that, when [any of] the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me go over, the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay;

またその人に「では『シボレテ』と言ってごらんなさい」と言い、その人がそれを正しく発音することができないで「セボレテ」と言うときは、その人を捕えて、ヨルダンの渡し場で殺した。その時エフライムびとの倒れたものは四万二千人であった。

then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth; and he said Sibboleth; for he could not frame to pronounce it right: then they laid hold on him, and slew him at the fords of the Jordan. And there fell at that time of Ephraim forty and two thousand.

エフタは六年の間イスラエルをさばいた。ギレアデびとエフタはついに死んで、ギレアデの自分の町に葬られた。

And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in [one of] the cities of Gilead.

彼の後にベツレヘムのイブザンがイスラエルをさばいた。

And after him Ibzan of Beth-lehem judged Israel.

彼に三十人のむすこがあった。また三十人の娘があったが、それを自分の氏族以外の者にとつがせ、むすこたちのためには三十人の娘をほかからめとった。彼は七年の間イスラエルをさばいた。

And he had thirty sons; and thirty daughters he sent abroad, and thirty daughters he brought in from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.

イブザンはついに死んで、ベツレヘムに葬られた。

And Ibzan died, and was buried at Beth-lehem.

彼の後にゼブルンびとエロンがイスラエルをさばいた。彼は十年の間イスラエルをさばいた。

And after him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.

ゼブルンびとエロンはついに死んで、ゼブルンの地のアヤロンに葬られた。

And Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

彼の後にピラトンびとヒレルの子アブドンがイスラエルをさばいた。

And after him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.

彼に四十人のむすこ及び三十人の孫があり、七十頭のろばに乗った。彼は八年の間イスラエルをさばいた。

And he had forty sons and thirty sons` sons, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years.

ピラトンびとヒレルの子アブドンはついに死んで、エフライムの地のアマレクびとの山地にあるピラトンに葬られた。

And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill-country of the Amalekites.

第13章

イスラエルの人々がまた主の前に悪を行ったので、主は彼らを四十年の間ペリシテびとの手にわたされた。

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

ここにダンびとの氏族の者で、名をマノアというゾラの人があった。その妻はうまずめで、子を産んだことがなかった。

And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not.

主の使がその女に現れて言った、「あなたはうまずめで、子を産んだことがありません。しかし、あなたは身ごもって男の子を産むでしょう。

And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not; but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.

それであなたは気をつけて、ぶどう酒または濃い酒を飲んではなりません。またすべて汚れたものを食べてはなりません。

Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing:

あなたは身ごもって男の子を産むでしょう。その頭にかみそりをあててはなりません。その子は生れた時から神にささげられたナジルびとです。彼はペリシテびとの手からイスラエルを救い始めるでしょう」。

for, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

そこでその女はきて夫に言った、「神の人がわたしのところにきました。その顔かたちは神の使の顔かたちのようで、たいそう恐ろしゅうございました。わたしはその人が、どこからきたのか尋ねませんでしたが、その人もわたしに名を告げませんでした。

Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel of God, very terrible; and I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:

しかしその人はわたしに『あなたは身ごもって男の子を産むでしょう。それであなたはぶどう酒または濃い酒を飲んではなりません。またすべて汚れたものを食べてはなりません。その子は生れた時から死ぬ日まで神にささげられたナジルびとです』と申しました」。

but he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb to the day of his death.

そこでマノアは主に願い求めて言った、「ああ、主よ、どうぞ、あなたがさきにつかわされた神の人をもう一度わたしたちに臨ませて、わたしたちがその生れる子になすべきことを教えさせてください」。

Then Manoah entreated Jehovah, and said, Oh, Lord, I pray thee, let the man of God whom thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.

神がマノアの願いを聞かれたので、神の使は女が畑に座していた時、ふたたび彼女に臨んだ。しかし夫マノアは一緒にいなかった。

And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her.

女は急ぎ走って行って夫に言った、「さきごろ、わたしに臨まれた人がまたわたしに現れました」。

And the woman made haste, and ran, and told her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the [other] day.

マノアは立って妻のあとについて行き、その人のもとに行って言った、「あなたはかつてこの女にお告げになったおかたですか」。その人は言った、「そうです」。

And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am.

マノアは言った、「あなたの言われたことが事実となったとき、その子の育て方およびこれになすべき事はなんでしょうか」。

And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass: what shall be the ordering of the child, and [how] shall we do unto him?

主の使はマノアに言った、「わたしがさきに女に言ったことは皆、守らせなければなりません。

And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware.

すなわちぶどうの木から産するものはすべて食べてはなりません。またぶどう酒と濃い酒を飲んではなりません。またすべて汚れたものを食べてはなりません。わたしが彼女に命じたことは皆、守らせなければなりません」。

She may not eat of anything that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe.

マノアは主の使に言った、「どうぞ、わたしたちに、あなたを引き留めさせ、あなたのために子やぎを備えさせてください」。

And Manoah said unto the angel of Jehovah, I pray thee, let us detain thee, that we may make ready a kid for thee.

主の使はマノアに言った、「あなたがわたしを引き留めても、わたしはあなたの食物をたべません。しかしあなたが燔祭を備えようとなさるのであれば、主にそれをささげなさい」。マノアは彼が主の使であるのを知らなかったからである。

And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wilt make ready a burnt-offering, thou must offer it unto Jehovah. For Manoah knew not that he was the angel of Jehovah.

マノアは主の使に言った、「あなたの名はなんといいますか。あなたの言われたことが事実となったとき、わたしたちはあなたをあがめましょう」。

And Manoah said unto the angel of Jehovah, What is thy name, that, when thy words come to pass, we may do thee honor?

主の使は彼に言った、「わたしの名は不思議です。どうしてあなたはそれをたずねるのですか」。

And the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore askest thou after my name, seeing it is wonderful?

そこでマノアは子やぎと素祭とをとり、岩の上でそれを主にささげた。主は不思議なことをされ、マノアとその妻はそれを見た。

So Manoah took the kid with the meal-offering, and offered it upon the rock unto Jehovah: and [the angel] did wondrously, and Manoah and his wife looked on.

すなわち炎が祭壇から天にあがったとき、主の使は祭壇の炎のうちにあってのぼった。マノアとその妻は見て、地にひれ伏した。

For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of Jehovah ascended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground.

主の使はふたたびマノアとその妻に現れなかった。その時マノアは彼が主の使であることを知った。

But the angel of Jehovah did no more appear to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of Jehovah.

マノアは妻に向かって言った、「わたしたちは神を見たから、きっと死ぬであろう」。

And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.

妻は彼に言った、「主がもし、わたしたちを殺そうと思われたのならば、わたしたちの手から燔祭と素祭をおうけにならなかったでしょう。またこれらのすべての事をわたしたちにお示しになるはずはなく、また今わたしたちにこのような事をお告げにならなかったでしょう」。

But his wife said unto him, If Jehovah were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meal-offering at our hand, neither would he have showed us all these things, nor would at this time have told such things as these.

やがて女は男の子を産んで、その名をサムソンと呼んだ。その子は成長し、主は彼を恵まれた。

And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and Jehovah blessed him.

主の霊はゾラとエシタオルの間のマハネダンにおいて初めて彼を感動させた。

And the Spirit of Jehovah began to move him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

第14章

サムソンはテムナに下って行き、ペリシテびとの娘で、テムナに住むひとりの女を見た。

And Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines.

彼は帰ってきて父母に言った、「わたしはペリシテびとの娘で、テムナに住むひとりの女を見ました。彼女をめとってわたしの妻にしてください」。

And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.

父母は言った、「あなたが行って、割礼をうけないペリシテびとのうちから妻を迎えようとするのは、身内の娘たちのうちに、あるいはわたしたちのすべての民のうちに女がないためなのですか」。しかしサムソンは父に言った、「彼女をわたしにめとってください。彼女はわたしの心にかないますから」。

Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.

父母はこの事が主から出たものであることを知らなかった。サムソンはペリシテびとを攻めようと、おりをうかがっていたからである。そのころペリシテびとはイスラエルを治めていた。

But his father and his mother knew not that it was of Jehovah; for he sought an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines had rule over Israel.

かくてサムソンは父母と共にテムナに下って行った。彼がテムナのぶどう畑に着くと、一頭の若いししがほえたけって彼に向かってきた。

Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnah, and came to the vineyards of Timnah: and, behold, a young lion roared against him.

時に主の霊が激しく彼に臨んだので、彼はあたかも子やぎを裂くようにそのししを裂いたが、手にはなんの武器も持っていなかった。しかしサムソンはそのしたことを父にも母にも告げなかった。

And the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid; and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

サムソンは下って行って女と話し合ったが、女はサムソンの心にかなった。

And he went down, and talked with the woman, and she pleased Samson well.

日がたって後、サムソンは彼女をめとろうとして帰ったが、道を転じて、かのししのしかばねを見ると、ししのからだに、はちの群れと、蜜があった。

And after a while he returned to take her; and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey.

彼はそれをかきあつめ、手にとって歩きながら食べ、父母のもとに帰って、彼らに与えたので、彼らもそれを食べた。しかし、ししのからだからその蜜をかきあつめたことは彼らに告げなかった。

And he took it into his hands, and went on, eating as he went; and he came to his father and mother, and gave unto them, and they did eat: but he told them not that he had taken the honey out of the body of the lion.

そこで父が下って、女のもとに行ったので、サムソンはそこにふるまいを設けた。そうすることは花婿のならわしであったからである。

And his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.

人々はサムソンを見ると、三十人の客を連れてきて、同席させた。

And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.

サムソンは彼らに言った、「わたしはあなたがたに一つのなぞを出しましょう。あなたがたがもし七日のふるまいのうちにそれを解いて、わたしに告げることができたなら、わたしはあなたがたに亜麻の着物三十と、晴れ着三十をさしあげましょう。

And Samson said unto them, Let me now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can declare it unto me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of raiment;

しかしあなたがたが、それをわたしに告げることができなければ、亜麻の着物三十と晴れ着三十をわたしにくれなければなりません」。彼らはサムソンに言った、「なぞを出しなさい。わたしたちはそれを聞きましょう」。

but if ye cannot declare it unto me, then shall ye give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of raiment. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.

サムソンは彼らに言った、「食らう者から食い物が出、強い者から甘い物が出た」。彼らは三日のあいだなぞを解くことができなかった。

And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth food, And out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days declare the riddle.

四日目になって、彼らはサムソンの妻に言った、「あなたの夫を説きすすめて、なぞをわたしたちに明かすようにしてください。そうしなければ、わたしたちは火をつけてあなたとあなたの父の家を焼いてしまいます。あなたはわたしたちの物を取るために、わたしたちを招いたのですか」。

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson`s wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father`s house with fire: have ye called us to impoverish us? is it not [so]?

そこでサムソンの妻はサムソンの前に泣いて言った、「あなたはただわたしを憎むだけで、愛してくれません。あなたはわたしの国の人々になぞを出して、それをわたしに解き明かしませんでした」。サムソンは彼女に言った、「わたしは自分の父にも母にも解き明かさなかった。どうしてあなたに解き明かせよう」。

And Samson`s wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell thee?

彼女は七日のふるまいの間、彼の前に泣いていたが、七日目になって、サムソンはついに彼女に解き明かした。ひどく彼に迫ったからである。そこで彼女はなぞを自分の国の人々にあかした。

And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she pressed him sore; and she told the riddle to the children of her people.

七日目になって、日の没する前に町の人々はサムソンに言った、「蜜より甘いものに何があろう。ししより強いものに何があろう」。サムソンは彼らに言った、「わたしの若い雌牛で耕さなかったなら、わたしのなぞは解けなかった」。

And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, Ye had not found out my riddle.

And the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and smote thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave the changes [of raiment] unto them that declared the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father`s house.

サムソンの妻は花婿付添人であった客の妻となった。

But Samson`s wife was [given] to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.

第15章

日がたって後、麦刈の時にサムソンは子やぎを携えて妻をおとずれ、「へやにはいって、妻に会いましょう」と言ったが、妻の父ははいることを許さなかった。

But it came to pass after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.

そして父は言った、「あなたが確かに彼女をきらったに相違ないと思ったので、わたしは彼女をあなたの客であった者にやりました。彼女の妹は彼女よりもきれいではありませんか。どうぞ、彼女の代りに妹をめとってください」。

And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.

サムソンは彼らに言った、「今度はわたしがペリシテびとに害を加えても、彼らのことでは、わたしに罪がない」。

And Samson said unto them, This time shall I be blameless in regard of the Philistines, when I do them a mischief.

そこでサムソンは行って、きつね三百匹を捕え、たいまつをとり、尾と尾をあわせて、その二つの尾の間に一つのたいまつを結びつけ、

And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between every two tails.

たいまつに火をつけて、そのきつねをペリシテびとのまだ刈らない麦の中に放し入れ、そのたばね積んだものと、まだ刈らないものとを焼き、オリブ畑をも焼いた。

And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks and the standing grain, and also the oliveyards.

ペリシテびとは言った、「これはだれのしわざか」。人々は言った、「テムナびとの婿サムソンだ。そのしゅうとがサムソンの妻を取り返して、その客であった者に与えたからだ」。そこでペリシテびとは上ってきて彼女とその父の家を火で焼き払った。

Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they said, Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he hath taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.

サムソンは彼らに言った、「あなたがたがそんなことをするならば、わたしはあなたがたに仕返しせずにはおかない」。

And Samson said unto them, If ye do after this manner, surely I will be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.

そしてサムソンは彼らを、さんざんに撃って大ぜい殺した。こうしてサムソンは下って行って、エタムの岩の裂け目に住んでいた。

And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the cleft of the rock of Etam.

そこでペリシテびとは上ってきて、ユダに陣を取り、レヒを攻めたので、

Then the Philistines went up, and encamped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.

ユダの人々は言った、「あなたがたはどうしてわれわれのところに攻めのぼってきたのですか」。彼らは言った、「われわれはサムソンを縛り、彼がわれわれにしたように、彼にするために上ってきたのです」。

And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they said, To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.

そこでユダの人々三千人がエタムの岩の裂け目に下って行って、サムソンに言った、「ペリシテびとはわれわれの支配者であることをあなたは知らないのですか。あなたはどうしてわれわれにこんな事をしたのですか」。サムソンは彼らに言った、「彼らがわたしにしたように、わたしは彼らにしたのです」。

Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what then is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

彼らはまたサムソンに言った、「われわれはあなたを縛って、ペリシテびとの手にわたすために下ってきたのです」。サムソンは彼らに言った、「あなたがた自身はわたしを撃たないということを誓いなさい」。

And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.

彼らはサムソンに言った、「いや、われわれはただ、あなたを縛って、ペリシテびとの手にわたすだけです。決してあなたを殺しません」。彼らは二本の新しい綱をもって彼を縛って、岩からひきあげた。

And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock.

サムソンがレヒにきたとき、ペリシテびとは声をあげて、彼に近づいた。その時、主の霊が激しく彼に臨んだので、彼の腕にかかっていた綱は火に焼けた亜麻のようになって、そのなわめが手から解けて落ちた。

When he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and the ropes that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands dropped from off his hands.

彼はろばの新しいあご骨一つを見つけたので、手を伸べて取り、それをもって一千人を打ち殺した。

And he found a fresh jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and smote a thousand men therewith.

そしてサムソンは言った、「ろばのあご骨をもって山また山を築き、ろばのあご骨をもって一千人を打ち殺した」。

And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, With the jawbone of an ass have I smitten a thousand men.

彼は言い終ると、その手からあご骨を投げすてた。これがためにその所は「あご骨の丘」と呼ばれた。

And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramath-lehi.

時に彼はひどくかわきを覚えたので、主に呼ばわって言った、「あなたはしもべの手をもって、この大きな救を施されたのに、わたしは今、かわいて死に、割礼をうけないものの手に陥ろうとしています」。

And he was sore athirst, and called on Jehovah, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance by the hand of thy servant; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised.

そこで神はレヒにあるくぼんだ所を裂かれたので、そこから水が流れ出た。サムソンがそれを飲むと彼の霊はもとにかえって元気づいた。それでその名を「呼ばわった者の泉」と呼んだ。これは今日までレヒにある。

But God clave the hollow place that is in Lehi, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore the name thereof was called En-hakkore, which is in Lehi, unto this day.

サムソンはペリシテびとの時代に二十年の間イスラエルをさばいた。

And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

第16章

サムソンはガザへ行って、そこでひとりの遊女を見、その女のところにはいった。

And Samson went to Gaza, and saw there a harlot, and went in unto her.

「サムソンがここにきた」と、ガザの人々に告げるものがあったので、ガザの人々はその所を取り囲み、夜通し町の門で待ち伏せし、「われわれは朝まで待って彼を殺そう」と言って、夜通し静かにしていた。

[And it was told] the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, [Let be] till morning light, then we will kill him.

サムソンは夜中まで寝たが、夜中に起きて、町の門のとびらと二つの門柱に手をかけて、貫の木もろともに引き抜き、肩に載せて、ヘブロンの向かいにある山の頂に運んで行った。

And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and laid hold of the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and plucked them up, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron.

この後、サムソンはソレクの谷にいるデリラという女を愛した。

And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.

ペリシテびとの君たちはその女のところにきて言った、「あなたはサムソンを説きすすめて、彼の大力はどこにあるのか、またわれわれはどうすれば彼に勝って、彼を縛り苦しめることができるかを見つけなさい。そうすればわれわれはおのおの銀千百枚ずつをあなたにさしあげましょう」。

And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred [pieces] of silver.

そこでデリラはサムソンに言った、「あなたの大力はどこにあるのか、またどうすればあなたを縛って苦しめることができるか、どうぞわたしに聞かせてください」。

And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.

サムソンは女に言った、「人々がもし、かわいたことのない七本の新しい弓弦をもってわたしを縛るなら、わたしは弱くなってほかの人のようになるでしょう」。

And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withes that were never dried, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.

そこでペリシテびとの君たちが、かわいたことのない七本の新しい弓弦を女に持ってきたので、女はそれをもってサムソンを縛った。

Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withes which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.

女はかねて奥のへやに人を忍ばせておいて、サムソンに言った、「サムソンよ、ペリシテびとがあなたに迫っています」。しかしサムソンはその弓弦を、あたかも亜麻糸が火にあって断たれるように断ち切った。こうして彼の力の秘密は知れなかった。

Now she had liers-in-wait abiding in the inner chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withes, as a string of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.

デリラはサムソンに言った、「あなたはわたしを欺いて、うそを言いました。どうしたらあなたを縛ることができるか、どうぞ今わたしに聞かせてください」。

And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.

サムソンは女に言った、「もし人々がまだ用いたことのない新しい綱をもって、わたしを縛るなら、弱くなってほかの人のようになるでしょう」。

And he said unto her, If they only bind me with new ropes wherewith no work hath been done, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.

そこでデリラは新しい綱をとり、それをもって彼を縛り、そして彼に言った、「サムソンよ、ペリシテびとがあなたに迫っています」。時に人々は奥のへやに忍んでいたが、サムソンはその綱を糸のように腕から断ち落した。

So Delilah took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And the liers-in-wait were abiding in the inner chamber. And he brake them off his arms like a thread.

そこでデリラはサムソンに言った、「あなたは今まで、わたしを欺いて、うそを言いましたが、どうしたらあなたを縛ることができるか、わたしに聞かせてください」。彼は女に言った、「あなたがもし、わたしの髪の毛七ふさを機の縦糸と一緒に織って、くぎでそれを留めておくならば、わたしは弱くなってほかの人のようになるでしょう」。そこで彼が眠ったとき、デリラはサムソンの髪の毛、七ふさをとって、それを機の縦糸に織り込み、

And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.

くぎでそれを留めておいて、彼に言った、「サムソンよ、ペリシテびとがあなたに迫っています」。しかしサムソンは目をさまして、くぎと機と縦糸とを引き抜いた。

And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and plucked away the pin of the beam, and the web.

そこで女はサムソンに言った、「あなたの心がわたしを離れているのに、どうして『おまえを愛する』と言うことができますか。あなたはすでに三度もわたしを欺き、あなたの大力がどこにあるかをわたしに告げませんでした」。

And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.

女は毎日その言葉をもって彼に迫り促したので、彼の魂は死ぬばかりに苦しんだ。

And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was vexed unto death.

彼はついにその心をことごとく打ち明けて女に言った、「わたしの頭にはかみそりを当てたことがありません。わたしは生れた時から神にささげられたナジルびとだからです。もし髪をそり落されたなら、わたしの力は去って弱くなり、ほかの人のようになるでしょう」。

And he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite unto God from my mother`s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

デリラはサムソンがその心をことごとく打ち明けたのを見、人をつかわしてペリシテびとの君たちを呼んで言った、「サムソンはその心をことごとくわたしに打ち明けましたから、今度こそ上っておいでなさい」。そこでペリシテびとの君たちは、銀を携えて女のもとに上ってきた。

And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath told me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought the money in their hand.

女は自分のひざの上にサムソンを眠らせ、人を呼んで髪の毛、七ふさをそり落させ、彼を苦しめ始めたが、その力は彼を去っていた。

And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.

そして女が「サムソンよ、ペリシテびとがあなたに迫っています」と言ったので、彼は目をさまして言った、「わたしはいつものように出て行って、からだをゆすろう」。彼は主が自分を去られたことを知らなかった。

And she said, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times, and shake myself free. But he knew not that Jehovah was departed from him.

そこでペリシテびとは彼を捕えて、両眼をえぐり、ガザに引いて行って、青銅の足かせをかけて彼をつないだ。こうしてサムソンは獄屋の中で、うすをひいていたが、

And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house.

その髪の毛はそり落された後、ふたたび伸び始めた。

Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.

さてペリシテびとの君たちは、彼らの神ダゴンに大いなる犠牲をささげて祝をしようと、共に集まって言った、「われわれの神は、敵サムソンをわれわれの手にわたされた」。

And the lords of the Philistines gathered them together to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.

民はサムソンを見て、自分たちの神をほめたたえて言った、「われわれの神は、われわれの国を荒し、われわれを多く殺した敵をわれわれの手にわたされた」。

And when the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hand our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, who hath slain many of us.

彼らはまた心に喜んで言った、「サムソンを呼んで、われわれのために戯れ事をさせよう」。彼らは獄屋からサムソンを呼び出して、彼らの前に戯れ事をさせた。彼らがサムソンを柱のあいだに立たせると、

And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison-house; and he made sport before them. And they set him between the pillars:

and Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house resteth, that I may lean upon them.

その家には男女が満ち、ペリシテびとの君たちも皆そこにいた。また屋根の上には三千人ばかりの男女がいて、サムソンの戯れ事をするのを見ていた。

Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.

サムソンは主に呼ばわって言った、「ああ、主なる神よ、どうぞ、わたしを覚えてください。ああ、神よ、どうぞもう一度、わたしを強くして、わたしの二つの目の一つのためにでもペリシテびとにあだを報いさせてください」。

And Samson called unto Jehovah, and said, O Lord Jehovah, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.

そしてサムソンは、その家をささえている二つの中柱の一つを右の手に、一つを左の手にかかえて、身をそれに寄せ、

And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house rested, and leaned upon them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left.

「わたしはペリシテびとと共に死のう」と言って、力をこめて身をかがめると、家はその中にいた君たちと、すべての民の上に倒れた。こうしてサムソンが死ぬときに殺したものは、生きているときに殺したものよりも多かった。

And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead that he slew at his death were more than they that he slew in his life.

やがて彼の身内の人たちおよび父の家族の者がみな下ってきて、彼を引き取り、携え上って、ゾラとエシタオルの間にある父マノアの墓に葬った。サムソンがイスラエルをさばいたのは二十年であった。

Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burying-place of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.

第17章

ここにエフライムの山地の人で、名をミカと呼ぶものがあった。

And there was a man of the hill-country of Ephraim, whose name was Micah.

彼は母に言った、「あなたはかつて銀千百枚を取られたので、それをのろい、わたしにも話されましたが、その銀はわたしが持っています。わたしがそれを取ったのです」。母は言った、「どうぞ主がわが子を祝福されますように」。

And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred [pieces] of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou didst utter a curse, and didst also speak it in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be my son of Jehovah.

そして彼が銀千百枚を母に返したので、母は言った、「わたしはわたしの子のために一つの刻んだ像と、一つの鋳た像を造るためにその銀をわたしの手から主に献納します。それで今それをあなたに返しましょう」。

And he restored the eleven hundred [pieces] of silver to his mother; and his mother said, I verily dedicate the silver unto Jehovah from my hand for my son, to make a graven image and a molten image: now therefore I will restore it unto thee.

ミカがその銀を母に返したので、母はその銀二百枚をとって、それを銀細工人に与え、一つの刻んだ像と、一つの鋳た像を造らせた。その像はミカの家にあった。

And when he restored the money unto his mother, his mother took two hundred [pieces] of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a graven image and a molten image: and it was in the house of Micah.

このミカという人は神の宮をもち、エポデとテラピムを造り、その子のひとりを立てて、自分の祭司とした。

And the man Micah had a house of gods, and he made an ephod, and teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

そのころイスラエルには王がなかったので、人々はおのおの自分たちの目に正しいと思うことを行った。

In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

さてここにユダの氏族のもので、ユダのベツレヘムからきたひとりの若者があった。彼はレビびとであって、そこに寄留していたのである。

And there was a young man out of Beth-lehem-judah, of the family of Judah, who was a Levite; and he sojourned there.

この人は自分の住むべきところを尋ねて、ユダのベツレヘムの町を去り、旅してエフライムの山地のミカの家にきた。

And the man departed out of the city, out of Beth-lehem-judah, to sojourn where he could find [a place], and he came to the hill-country of Ephraim to the house of Micah, as he journeyed.

ミカは彼に言った、「あなたはどこからおいでになりましたか」。彼は言った、「わたしはユダのベツレヘムのレビびとですが、住むべきところを尋ねて旅をしているのです」。

And Micah said unto him, Whence comest thou? And he said unto him, I am a Levite of Beth-lehem-judah, and I go to sojourn where I may find [a place].

ミカは言った、「わたしと一緒にいて、わたしのために父とも祭司ともなってください。そうすれば年に銀十枚と衣服ひとそろいと食物とをさしあげましょう」。

And Micah said unto him, Dwell with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee ten [pieces] of silver by the year, and a suit of apparel, and thy victuals. So the Levite went in.

レビびとはついにその人と一緒に住むことを承諾した。そしてその若者は彼の子のひとりのようになった。

And the Levite was content to dwell with the man; and the young man was unto him as one of his sons.

ミカはレビびとであるこの若者を立てて自分の祭司としたので、彼はミカの家にいた。

And Micah consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah.

それでミカは言った、「今わたしはレビびとを祭司に持つようになったので、主がわたしをお恵みくださることがわかりました」。

Then said Micah, Now know I that Jehovah will do me good, seeing I have a Levite to my priest.

第18章

そのころイスラエルには王がなかった。そのころダンびとの部族はイスラエルの部族のうちにあって、その日までまだ嗣業の地を得なかったので自分たちの住むべき嗣業の地を求めていた。

In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day [their] inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

それでダンの人々は自分の部族の総勢のうちから、勇者五人をゾラとエシタオルからつかわして土地をうかがい探らせた。すなわち彼らに言った、「行って土地を探ってきなさい」。彼らはエフライムの山地に行き、ミカの家に着いて、そこに宿ろうとした。

And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their whole number, men of valor, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land. And they came to the hill-country of Ephraim, unto the house of Micah, and lodged there.

彼らがミカの家に近づいたとき、レビびとである若者の声を聞きわけたので、身をめぐらしてそこにはいって彼に言った、「だれがあなたをここに連れてきたのですか。あなたはここで何をしているのですか。ここになんの用があるのですか」。

When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite; and they turned aside thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what doest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

若者は彼らに言った、「ミカが、かようかようにしてわたしを雇ったので、わたしはその祭司となったのです」。

And he said unto them, Thus and thus hath Micah dealt with me, and he hath hired me, and I am become his priest.

彼らは言った、「どうぞ、神に伺って、われわれが行く道にしあわせがあるかどうかを知らせてください」。

And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.

その祭司は彼らに言った、「安心して行きなさい。あなたがたが行く道は主が見守っておられます」。

And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before Jehovah is your way wherein ye go.

そこで五人の者は去ってライシに行き、そこにいる民を見ると、彼らは安らかに住まい、その穏やかで安らかなことシドンびとのようであって、この国には一つとして欠けたものがなく、富を持ち、またシドンびとと遠く離れており、ほかの民と交わることがなかった。

Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and secure; for there was none in the land, possessing authority, that might put [them] to shame in anything, and they were far from the Sidonians, and had no dealings with any man.

かくて彼らがゾラとエシタオルにおる兄弟たちのもとに帰ってくると、兄弟たちは彼らに言った、「いかがでしたか」。

And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What [say] ye?

彼らは言った、「立って彼らのところに攻め上りましょう。われわれはかの地を見たが、非常に豊かです。あなたがたはなぜじっとしているのですか。ためらわずに進んで行って、かの地を取りなさい。

And they said, Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go and to enter in to possess the land.

あなたがたが行けば、安らかにおる民の所に行くでしょう。その地は広く、神はそれをあなたがたの手に賜わるのです。そこには地にあるもの一つとして欠けているものはありません」。

When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and the land is large; for God hath given it into your hand, a place where there is no want of anything that is in the earth.

そこでダンの氏族のもの六百人が武器を帯びて、ゾラとエシタオルを出発し、

And there set forth from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men girt with weapons of war.

上って行ってユダのキリアテ・ヤリムに陣を張った。このゆえに、その所は今日までマハネダンと呼ばれる。それはキリアテ・ヤリムの西にある。

And they went up, and encamped in Kiriath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan, unto this day; behold, it is behind Kiriath-jearim.

彼らはそこからエフライムの山地に進み、ミカの家に着いた。

And they passed thence unto the hill-country of Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

かのライシの国をうかがいに行った五人の者はその兄弟たちに言った、「あなたがたはこれらの家にエポデとテラピムと刻んだ像と鋳た像のあるのを知っていますか。それであなたがたは今、なすべきことを決めなさい」。

Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.

そこで彼らはその方へ身をめぐらして、かのレビびとの若者の家すなわちミカの家に行って、彼に安否を問うた。

And they turned aside thither, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and asked him of his welfare.

しかし武器を帯びた六百人のダンの人々は門の入口に立っていた。

And the six hundred men girt with their weapons of war, who were of the children of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.

かの土地をうかがいに行った五人の者は上って行って、そこにはいり、刻んだ像とエポデとテラピムと鋳た像とを取ったが、祭司は武器を帯びた六百人の者と共に門の入口に立っていた。

And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men girt with weapons of war.

彼らがミカの家にはいって刻んだ像とエポデとテラピムと鋳た像とを取った時、祭司は彼らに言った、「あなたがたは何をなさいますか」。

And when these went into Micah`s house, and fetched the graven image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said unto them, What do ye?

彼らは言った、「黙りなさい。あなたの手を口にあてて、われわれと一緒にきて、われわれのために父とも祭司ともなりなさい。ひとりの家の祭司であるのと、イスラエルの一部族、一氏族の祭司であるのと、どちらがよいですか」。

And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thy hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be priest unto the house of one man, or to be priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

祭司は喜んで、エポデとテラピムと刻んだ像とを取り、民のなかに加わった。

And the priest`s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

かくて彼らは身をめぐらして去り、その子供たちと家畜と貨財をさきにたてて進んだが、

So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the goods before them.

ミカの家をはるかに離れたとき、ミカは家に近い家の人々を集め、ダンの人々に追いつき、

When they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah`s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

ダンの人々を呼んだので、彼らはふり向いてミカに言った、「あなたがそのように仲間を連れてきたのは、どうしたのですか」。

And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?

彼は言った、「あなたがたが、わたしの造った神々および祭司を奪い去ったので、わたしに何が残っていますか。しかるにあなたがたがわたしに向かって『どうしたのですか』と言われるとは何事ですか」。

And he said, ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and are gone away, and what have I more? and how then say ye unto me, What aileth thee?

ダンの人々は彼に言った、「あなたは大きな声を出さないがよい。気の荒い連中があなたに撃ちかかって、あなたは自分の命と家族の命を失うようになるでしょう」。

And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall upon you, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.

こうしてダンの人々は去って行ったが、ミカは彼らの強いのを見て、くびすをかえして自分の家に帰った。

And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

さて彼らはミカが造った物と、ミカと共にいた祭司とを奪ってライシにおもむき、穏やかで、安らかな民のところへ行って、つるぎをもって彼らを撃ち、火をつけてその町を焼いたが、

And they took that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people quiet and secure, and smote them with the edge of the sword; and they burnt the city with fire.

シドンを遠く離れており、ほかの民との交わりがなかったので、それを救うものがなかった。その町はベテレホブに属する谷にあった。彼らは町を建てなおしてそこに住み、

And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built the city, and dwelt therein.

イスラエルに生れた先祖ダンの名にしたがって、その町の名をダンと名づけた。その町の名はもとはライシであった。

And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

そしてダンの人々は刻んだ像を自分たちのために安置し、モーセの孫すなわちゲルショムの子ヨナタンとその子孫がダンびとの部族の祭司となって、国が捕囚となる日にまで及んだ。

And the children of Dan set up for themselves the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.

神の家がシロにあったあいだ、常に彼らはミカが造ったその刻んだ像を飾って置いた。

So they set them up Micah`s graven image which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

第19章

そのころ、イスラエルに王がなかった時、エフライムの山地の奥にひとりのレビびとが寄留していた。彼はユダのベツレヘムからひとりの女を迎えて、めかけとしていたが、

And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.

そのめかけは怒って、彼のところを去り、ユダのベツレヘムの父の家に帰って、そこに四か月ばかり過ごした。

And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him unto her father`s house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there the space of four months.

そこで夫は彼女をなだめて連れ帰ろうと、しもべと二頭のろばを従え、立って彼女のあとを追って行った。彼が女の父の家に着いた時、娘の父は彼を見て、喜んで迎えた。

And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly unto her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father`s house; and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

娘の父であるしゅうとが引き留めたので、彼は三日共におり、みな飲み食いしてそこに宿った。

And his father-in-law, the damsel`s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.

四日目に彼らは朝はやく起き、彼が立ち去ろうとしたので、娘の父は婿に言った、「少し食事をして元気をつけ、それから出かけなさい」。

And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the damsel`s father said unto his son-in-law, Strengthen thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye shall go your way.

そこでふたりは座して共に飲み食いしたが、娘の父はその人に言った、「どうぞもう一晩泊まって楽しく過ごしなさい」。

So they sat down, and did eat and drink, both of them together: and the damsel`s father said unto the man, Be pleased, I pray thee, to tarry all night, and let thy heart be merry.

その人は立って去ろうとしたが、しゅうとがしいたので、ついにまたそこに宿った。

And the man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.

五日目になって、朝はやく起きて去ろうとしたが、娘の父は言った、「どうぞ、元気をつけて、日が傾くまでとどまりなさい」。そこで彼らふたりは食事をした。

And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel`s father said, Strengthen thy heart, I pray thee, and tarry ye until the day declineth; and they did eat, both of them.

その人がついにめかけおよびしもべと共に去ろうとして立ちあがったとき、娘の父であるしゅうとは彼に言った、「日も暮れようとしている。どうぞもう一晩泊まりなさい。日は傾いた。ここに宿って楽しく過ごしなさい。そしてあしたの朝はやく起きて出立し、家に帰りなさい」。

And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel`s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thy heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.

しかし、その人は泊まることを好まないので、立って去り、エブスすなわちエルサレムの向かいに着いた。くらをおいた二頭のろばと彼のめかけも一緒であった。

But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of asses saddled; his concubine also was with him.

彼らがエブスに近づいたとき、日はすでに没したので、しもべは主人に言った、「さあ、われわれは道を転じてエブスびとのこの町にはいって、そこに宿りましょう」。

When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.

主人は彼に言った、「われわれは道を転じて、イスラエルの人々の町でない外国人の町に、はいってはならない。ギベアまで行こう」。

And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.

彼はまたしもべに言った、「さあ、われわれはギベアかラマか、そのうちの一つに着いてそこに宿ろう」。

And he said unto his servant, Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.

彼らは進んで行ったが、ベニヤミンに属するギベアの近くで日が暮れたので、

So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them near to Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.

ギベアへ行って宿ろうと、そこに道を転じ、町にはいって、その広場に座した。だれも彼らを家に迎えて泊めてくれる者がなかったからである。

And they turned aside thither, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.

時にひとりの老人が夕暮に畑の仕事から帰ってきた。この人はエフライムの山地の者で、ギベアに寄留していたのである。ただしこの所の人々はベニヤミンびとであった。

And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even: now the man was of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.

彼は目をあげて、町の広場に旅人のおるのを見た。老人は言った、「あなたはどこへ行かれるのですか。どこからおいでになりましたか」。

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?

その人は言った、「われわれはユダのベツレヘムから、エフライムの山地の奥へ行くものです。わたしはあそこの者で、ユダのベツレヘムへ行き、今わたしの家に帰るところですが、だれもわたしを家に泊めてくれる者がありません。

And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah unto the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim; from thence am I, and I went to Beth-lehem-judah: and I am [now] going to the house of Jehovah; and there is no man that taketh me into his house.

われわれには、ろばのわらも飼葉もあり、またわたしと、はしためと、しもべと共にいる若者との食物も酒もあって、何も欠けているものはありません」。

Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man that is with thy servants: there is no want of anything.

老人は言った、「安心しなさい。あなたの必要なものはなんでも備えましょう。ただ広場で夜を過ごしてはなりません」。

And the old man said, Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.

そして彼を家に連れていって、ろばに飼葉を与えた。彼らは足を洗って飲み食いした。

So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder; and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

彼らが楽しく過ごしていた時、町の人々の悪い者どもがその家を取り囲み、戸を打ちたたいて、家のあるじである老人に言った、「あなたの家にきた人を出しなさい。われわれはその者を知るであろう」。

As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, beset the house round about, beating at the door; and they spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thy house, that we may know him.

しかし家のあるじは彼らのところに出ていって言った、「いいえ、兄弟たちよ、どうぞ、そんな悪いことをしないでください。この人はすでにわたしの家にはいったのだから、そんなつまらない事をしないでください。

And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this folly.

ここに処女であるわたしの娘と、この人のめかけがいます。今それを出しますから、それをはずかしめ、あなたがたの好きなようにしなさい。しかしこの人にはそのようなつまらない事をしないでください」。

Behold, here is my daughter a virgin, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not any such folly.

しかし人々が聞きいれなかったので、その人は自分のめかけをとって彼らのところに出した。彼らはその女を犯して朝まで終夜はずかしめ、日ののぼるころになって放し帰らせた。

But the men would not hearken to him: so the man laid hold on his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

朝になって女は自分の主人を宿してくれた人の家の戸口にきて倒れ伏し、夜のあけるまでに及んだ。

Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man`s house where her lord was, till it was light.

彼女の主人は朝起きて家の戸を開き、出て旅立とうとすると、そのめかけである女が家の戸口に、手を敷居にかけて倒れていた。

And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands upon the threshold.

彼は女に向かって、「起きよ、行こう」と言ったけれども、なんの答もなかった。そこでその人は女をろばに乗せ、立って自分の家におもむいたが、

And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going; but none answered: then he took her up upon the ass; and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

その家に着いたとき、刀を執り、めかけを捕えて、そのからだを十二切れに断ち切り、それをイスラエルの全領域にあまねく送った。

And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.

それを見たものはみな言った、「イスラエルの人々がエジプトの地から上ってきた日から今日まで、このような事は起ったこともなく、また見たこともない。この事をよく考え、協議して言うことを決めよ」。

And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider it, take counsel, and speak.

第20章

そこでイスラエルの人々は、ダンからベエルシバまで、またギレアデの地からもみな出てきて、その会衆はひとりのようにミヅパで主のもとに集まった。

Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto Jehovah at Mizpah.

民の首領たち、すなわちイスラエルのすべての部族の首領たちは、みずから神の民の集合に出た。つるぎを帯びている歩兵が四十万人あった。

And the chiefs of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

ベニヤミンの人々は、イスラエルの人々がミヅパに上ったことを聞いた。イスラエルの人々は言った、「どうして、この悪事が起ったのか、われわれに話してください」。

(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpah.) And the children of Israel said, Tell us, how was this wickedness brought to pass?

殺された女の夫であるレビびとは答えて言った、「わたしは、めかけと一緒にベニヤミンに属するギベアへ行って宿りましたが、

And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was murdered, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

ギベアの人々は立ってわたしを攻め、夜の間に、わたしのおる家を取り囲んで、わたしを殺そうと企て、ついにわたしのめかけをはずかしめて、死なせました。

And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about me by night; me they thought to have slain, and my concubine they forced, and she is dead.

それでわたしはめかけを捕えて断ち切り、それをイスラエルの嗣業のすべての地方にあまねく送りました。彼らがイスラエルにおいて憎むべきみだらなことを行ったからです。

And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

イスラエルの人々よ、あなたがたは皆自分の意見と考えをここに述べてください」。

Behold, ye children of Israel, all of you, give here your advice and counsel.

民は皆ひとりのように立って言った、「われわれはだれも自分の天幕に行きません。まただれも自分の家に帰りません。

And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn unto his house.

われわれが今ギベアに対してしようとする事はこれです。われわれはくじを引いて、ギベアに攻めのぼりましょう。

But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: [we will go up] against it by lot;

すなわちイスラエルのすべての部族から百人について十人、千人について百人、万人について千人を選んで、民の糧食をとらせ、民はベニヤミンのギベアに行って、ベニヤミンびとがイスラエルにおいておこなったすべてのみだらな事に対して、報復しましょう」。

and we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victuals for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.

こうしてイスラエルの人々は皆集まり、一致結束して町を攻めようとした。

So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

イスラエルのもろもろの部族は人々をあまねくベニヤミンの部族のうちにつかわして言わせた、「あなたがたのうちに起ったこの事は、なんたる悪事でしょうか。

And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is come to pass among you?

それで今ギベアにいるあの悪い人々をわたしなさい。われわれは彼らを殺して、イスラエルから悪を除き去りましょう」。しかしベニヤミンの人々はその兄弟であるイスラエルの人々の言葉を聞きいれなかった。

Now therefore deliver up the men, the base fellows, that are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel.

かえってベニヤミンの人々は町々からギベアに集まり、出てイスラエルの人々と戦おうとした。

And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

その日、町々から集まったベニヤミンの人々はつるぎを帯びている者二万六千人あり、ほかにギベアの住民で集まった精兵が七百人あった。

And the children of Benjamin were numbered on that day out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

このすべての民のうちに左ききの精兵が七百人あって、いずれも一本の毛すじをねらって石を投げても、はずれることがなかった。

Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at a hair-breadth, and not miss.

イスラエルの人々の集まった者はベニヤミンを除いて、つるぎを帯びている者四十万人あり、いずれも軍人であった。

And the men of Israel, besides Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.

イスラエルの人々は立ちあがってベテルにのぼり、神に尋ねた、「われわれのうち、いずれがさきにのぼって、ベニヤミンの人々と戦いましょうか」。主は言われた、「ユダがさきに」。

And the children of Israel arose, and went up to Beth-el, and asked counsel of God; and they said, Who shall go up for us first to battle against the children of Benjamin? And Jehovah said, Judah [shall go up] first.

そこでイスラエルの人々は、朝起きて、ギベアに対し陣を取った。

And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.

すなわちイスラエルの人々はベニヤミンと戦うために出て行って、ギベアで彼らに対して戦いの備えをしたが、

And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel set the battle in array against them at Gibeah.

ベニヤミンの人々はギベアから出てきて、その日イスラエルの人々のうち二万二千人を地に撃ち倒した。

And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites on that day twenty and two thousand men.

しかしイスラエルの民の人々は奮いたって初めの日に備えをした所にふたたび戦いの備えをした。

And the people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves, and set the battle again in array in the place where they set themselves in array the first day.

そしてイスラエルの人々は上って行って主の前に夕暮まで泣き、主に尋ねた、「われわれは再びわれわれの兄弟であるベニヤミンの人々と戦いを交えるべきでしょうか」。主は言われた、「攻めのぼれ」。

And the children of Israel went up and wept before Jehovah until even; and they asked of Jehovah, saying, Shall I again draw nigh to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And Jehovah said, Go up against him.

そこでイスラエルの人々は、次の日またベニヤミンの人々の所に攻めよせたが、

And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

ベニヤミンは次の日またギベアから出て、これを迎え、ふたたびイスラエルの人々のうち一万八千人を地に撃ち倒した。これらは皆つるぎを帯びている者であった。

And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

これがためにイスラエルのすべての人々すなわち全軍はベテルに上って行って泣き、その所で主の前に座して、その日夕暮まで断食し、燔祭と酬恩祭を主の前にささげた。

Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto Beth-el, and wept, and sat there before Jehovah, and fasted that day until even; and they offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before Jehovah.

そしてイスラエルの人々は主に尋ね、――そのころ神の契約の箱はそこにあって、

And the children of Israel asked of Jehovah (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

アロンの子エレアザルの子であるピネハスが、それに仕えていた――そして言った、「われわれはなおふたたび出て、われわれの兄弟であるベニヤミンの人々と戦うべきでしょうか。あるいはやめるべきでしょうか」。主は言われた、「のぼれ。わたしはあす彼らをあなたがたの手にわたすであろう」。

and Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And Jehovah said, Go up; for to-morrow I will deliver him into thy hand.

そこでイスラエルはギベアの周囲に伏兵を置き、

And Israel set liers-in-wait against Gibeah round about.

そしてイスラエルの人々は三日目にまたベニヤミンの人々のところに攻めのぼり、前のようにギベアに対して備えをした。

And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and set themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

ベニヤミンの人々は出て、民を迎えたが、ついに町からおびき出されたので、彼らは前のように大路で民を撃ちはじめ、また野でイスラエルの人を三十人ばかり殺した。その大路は、一つはベテルに至り、一つはギベアに至るものであった。

And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite and kill of the people, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to Beth-el, and the other to Gibeah, in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

ベニヤミンの人々は言った、「彼らは初めのように、われわれの前に撃ち破られる」。しかしイスラエルの人々は言った、「われわれは逃げて、彼らを町から大路におびき出そう」。

And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them away from the city unto the highways.

そしてイスラエルの人々は皆その所から立ってバアル・タマルに備えをした。その間に待ち伏せていたイスラエルの人々がその所から、すなわちゲバの西から現れ出た。

And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and set themselves in array at Baal-tamar: and the liers-in-wait of Israel brake forth out of their place, even out of Maareh-geba.

すなわちイスラエルの全軍のうちから精兵一万人がきて、ギベアを襲い、その戦いは激しかった。しかしベニヤミンの人々は災の自分たちに迫っているのを知らなかった。

And there came over against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore; but they knew not that evil was close upon them.

主がイスラエルの前にベニヤミンを撃ち敗られたので、イスラエルの人々は、その日ベニヤミンびと二万五千一百人を殺した。これらは皆つるぎを帯びている者であった。

And Jehovah smote Benjamin before Israel; and the children of Israel destroyed of Benjamin that day twenty and five thousand and a hundred men: all these drew the sword.

こうしてベニヤミンの人々は自分たちの撃ち敗られたのを見た。そこでイスラエルの人々はギベアに対して設けた伏兵をたのんで、ベニヤミンびとを避けて退いた。

So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten; for the men of Israel gave place to Benjamin, because they trusted unto the liers-in-wait whom they had set against Gibeah.

伏兵は急いでギベアに突き入り、進んでつるぎをもって町をことごとく撃った。

And the liers-in-wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers-in-wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

イスラエルの人々と伏兵の間に定めた合図は、町から大いなるのろしがあがるとき、

Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers-in-wait was, that they should make a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city.

イスラエルの人々が戦いに転じることであった。さてベニヤミンは初めイスラエルの人々を撃って三十人ばかりを殺したので言った、「まことに彼らは最初の戦いのようにわれわれの前に撃ち敗られる」。

And the men of Israel turned in the battle, and Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons; for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.

しかし、のろしが煙の柱となって町からのぼりはじめたので、ベニヤミンの人々がうしろを見ると、町はみな煙となって天にのぼっていた。

But when the cloud began to arise up out of the city in a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them; and, behold, the whole of the city went up [in smoke] to heaven.

その時イスラエルの人々が向きを変えたので、ベニヤミンの人々は災が自分たちに迫ったのを見て、うろたえ、

And the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed; for they saw that evil was come upon them.

イスラエルの人々の前から身をめぐらして荒野の方に向かったが、戦いが彼らに追い迫り、町から出てきた者どもは、彼らを中にはさんで殺した。

Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle followed hard after them; and they that came out of the cities destroyed them in the midst thereof.

すなわちイスラエルの人々はベニヤミンの人々を切り倒し、追い撃ち、踏みにじって、ノハから東の方ギベアの向かいにまで及んだ。

They inclosed the Benjamites round about, [and] chased them, [and] trod them down at [their] resting-place, as far as over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

ベニヤミンの倒れた者は一万八千人で、みな勇士であった。

And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these [were] men of valor.

彼らは身をめぐらして荒野の方、リンモンの岩まで逃げたが、イスラエルの人々は大路でそのうち五千人を切り倒し、なおも追撃してギドムに至り、そのうちの二千人を殺した。

And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men, and followed hard after them unto Gidom, and smote of them two thousand men.

こうしてその日ベニヤミンの倒れた者はつるぎを帯びている者合わせて二万五千人で、みな勇士であった。

So that all who fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these [were] men of valor.

しかし六百人の者は身をめぐらして荒野の方、リンモンの岩まで逃げて、四か月の間リンモンの岩に住んだ。

But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon, and abode in the rock of Rimmon four months.

そこでイスラエルの人々はまた身をかえしてベニヤミンの人々を攻め、つるぎをもって人も獣もすべて見つけたものを撃ち殺し、また見つけたすべての町に火をかけた。

And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city, and the cattle, and all that they found: moreover all the cities which they found they set on fire.

第21章

かつてイスラエルの人々はミヅパで、「われわれのうちひとりもその娘をベニヤミンびとの妻として与える者があってはならない」と言って誓ったので、

Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.

民はベテルに行って、そこで夕暮まで神の前に座し、声をあげて激しく泣いて、

And the people came to Beth-el, and sat there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore.

言った、「イスラエルの神、主よ、どうしてイスラエルにこのような事が起って、今日イスラエルに一つの部族が欠けるようになったのですか」。

And they said, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to-day one tribe lacking in Israel?

翌日、民は早く起きて、そこに祭壇を築き、燔祭と酬恩祭をささげた。

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.

そしてイスラエルの人々は言った、「イスラエルのすべての部族のうちで集会に上って、主のもとに行かなかった者はだれか」。これは彼らがミヅパにのぼって、主のもとに行かない者のことについて大いなる誓いを立てて、「その人は必ず殺されなければならない」と言ったからである。

And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up in the assembly unto Jehovah? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up unto Jehovah to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death.

しかしイスラエルの人々は兄弟ベニヤミンをあわれんで言った、「今日イスラエルに一つの部族が絶えた。

And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

われわれは主をさして、われわれの娘を彼らに妻として与えないと誓ったので、かの残った者どもに妻をめとらせるにはどうしたらよいであろうか」。

How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by Jehovah that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?

彼らはまた言った、「イスラエルの部族のうちで、ミヅパにのぼって主のもとに行かなかったのはどの部族か」。ところがヤベシ・ギレアデからはひとりも陣営にきて集会に臨んだ者がなかった。

And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto Jehovah to Mizpah? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.

すなわち民を集めて見ると、ヤベシ・ギレアデの住民はひとりもそこにいなかった。

For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there.

そこで会衆は勇士一万二千人をかしこにつかわし、これに命じて言った、「ヤベシ・ギレアデに行って、その住民を、女、子供もろともつるぎをもって撃て。

And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.

そしてこのようにしなければならない。すなわち男および男と寝た女はことごとく滅ぼさなければならない」。

And this is the thing that ye shall do: ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.

こうして彼らはヤベシ・ギレアデの住民のうちで四百人の若い処女を獲た。これはまだ男と寝たことがなく、男を知らない者である。彼らはこれをカナンの地にあるシロの陣営に連れてきた。

And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

そこで全会衆は人をつかわして、リンモンの岩におるベニヤミンの人々に平和を告げた。

And the whole congregation sent and spake to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace unto them.

ベニヤミンの人々がその時、帰ってきたので、彼らはヤベシ・ギレアデの女のうちから生かしておいた女をこれに与えたが、なお足りなかった。

And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.

こうして民は、主がイスラエルの部族のうちに欠陥をつくられたことのために、ベニヤミンをあわれんだ。

And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that Jehovah had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

会衆の長老たちは言った、「ベニヤミンの女が絶えたので、かの残りの者どもに妻をめとらせるにはどうしたらよいでしょうか」。

Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?

彼らはまた言った、「イスラエルから一つの部族が消えうせないためにベニヤミンのうちの残りの者どもに、あとつぎがなければならない。

And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel.

しかし、われわれの娘を彼らの妻に与えることはできない。イスラエルの人々が『ベニヤミンに妻を与える者はのろわれる』と言って誓ったからである」。

Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.

それで彼らは言った、「年々シロに主の祭がある」。シロはベテルの北にあって、ベテルからシケムにのぼる大路の東、レバナの南にある。

And they said, Behold, there is a feast of Jehovah from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.

そして彼らはベニヤミンの人々に命じて言った、「あなたがたは行って、ぶどう畑に待ち伏せして、

And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,

うかがいなさい。もしシロの娘たちが踊りを踊りに出てきたならば、ぶどう畑から出て、シロの娘たちのうちから、めいめい自分の妻をとって、ベニヤミンの地に連れて行きなさい。

and see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

もしその父あるいは兄弟がきて、われわれに訴えるならば、われわれは彼らに、『われわれのために彼らをゆるしてください。戦争のときにわれわれは、彼らおのおのに妻をとってやらなかったし、またあなたがたも彼らに与えなかったからです。もし与えたならば、あなたがたは罪を犯したことになるからでした』と言いましょう」。

And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come to complain unto us, that we will say unto them, Grant them graciously unto us, because we took not for each man [of them] his wife in battle, neither did ye give them unto them, else would ye now be guilty.

ベニヤミンの人々はそのように行い、踊っている者どものうちから自分たちの数にしたがって妻を取り、それを連れて領地に帰り、町々を建てなおして、そこに住んだ。

And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they carried off: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them.

こうしてイスラエルの人々は、その時そこを去って、おのおのその部族および氏族に帰った。すなわちそこを立って、おのおのその嗣業の地に帰った。

And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

そのころ、イスラエルには王がなかったので、おのおの自分の目に正しいと見るところをおこなった。

In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
