The conquest and division of the land of Canaan

The narrative of Israel's entry into Canaan under Joshua, the conquest of Jericho and other cities, and the territorial allotment among the twelve tribes. It closes with Joshua's covenant renewal at Shechem.

主のしもべモーセが死んだ後、主はモーセの従者、ヌンの子ヨシュアに言われた、

Now it came to pass after the death of Moses the servant of Jehovah, that Jehovah spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses` minister, saying,

「わたしのしもべモーセは死んだ。それゆえ、今あなたと、このすべての民とは、共に立って、このヨルダンを渡り、わたしがイスラエルの人々に与える地に行きなさい。

Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

あなたがたが、足の裏で踏む所はみな、わたしがモーセに約束したように、あなたがたに与えるであろう。

Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, to you have I given it, as I spake unto Moses.

あなたがたの領域は、荒野からレバノンに及び、また大川ユフラテからヘテびとの全地にわたり、日の入る方の大海に達するであろう。

From the wilderness, and this Lebanon, even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border.

あなたが生きながらえる日の間、あなたに当ることのできる者は、ひとりもないであろう。わたしは、モーセと共にいたように、あなたと共におるであろう。わたしはあなたを見放すことも、見捨ることもしない。

There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life. as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee; I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

強く、また雄々しくあれ。あなたはこの民に、わたしが彼らに与えると、その先祖たちに誓った地を獲させなければならない。

Be strong and of good courage; for thou shalt cause this people to inherit the land which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

ただ強く、また雄々しくあって、わたしのしもべモーセがあなたに命じた律法をことごとく守って行い、これを離れて右にも左にも曲ってはならない。それはすべてあなたが行くところで、勝利を得るためである。

Only be strong and very courageous, to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest have good success whithersoever thou goest.

この律法の書をあなたの口から離すことなく、昼も夜もそれを思い、そのうちにしるされていることを、ことごとく守って行わなければならない。そうするならば、あなたの道は栄え、あなたは勝利を得るであろう。

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

わたしはあなたに命じたではないか。強く、また雄々しくあれ。あなたがどこへ行くにも、あなたの神、主が共におられるゆえ、恐れてはならない、おののいてはならない」。

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not affrighted, neither be thou dismayed: for Jehovah thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

そこでヨシュアは民のつかさたちに命じて言った、

Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,

「宿営のなかを巡って民に命じて言いなさい、『糧食の備えをしなさい。三日のうちに、あなたがたはこのヨルダンを渡って、あなたがたの神、主があなたがたに与えて獲させようとされる地を獲るために、進み行かなければならないからである』」。

Pass through the midst of the camp, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye are to pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which Jehovah your God giveth you to possess it.

ヨシュアはまたルベンびと、ガドびと、およびマナセの半部族に言った、

And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,

「主のしもべモーセがあなたがたに命じて、『あなたがたの神、主はあなたがたのために安息の場所を備え、この地をあなたがたに賜わるであろう』と言った言葉を記憶しなさい。

Remember the word which Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, saying, Jehovah your God giveth you rest, and will give you this land.

あなたがたの妻子と家畜とは、モーセがあなたがたに与えたヨルダンのこちら側の地にとどまらなければならない。しかし、あなたがたのうちの勇士はみな武装して、兄弟たちの先に立って渡り、これを助けなければならない。

Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall abide in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but ye shall pass over before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valor, and shall help them;

そして主があなたがたに賜わったように、あなたがたの兄弟たちにも安息を賜わり、彼らもあなたがたの神、主が賜わる地を獲るようになるならば、あなたがたは、主のしもべモーセから与えられた、ヨルダンのこちら側、日の出の方にある、あなたがたの所有の地に帰って、それを保つことができるであろう」。

until Jehovah have given your brethren rest, as [he hath given] you, and they also have possessed the land which Jehovah your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and possess it, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising.

彼らはヨシュアに答えた、「あなたがわれわれに命じられたことをみな行います。あなたがつかわされる所へは、どこへでも行きます。

And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou hast commanded us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us we will go.

われわれはすべてのことをモーセに聞き従ったように、あなたに聞き従います。ただ、どうぞ、あなたの神、主がモーセと共におられたように、あなたと共におられますように。

According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only Jehovah thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.

だれであっても、あなたの命令にそむき、あなたの命じられる言葉に聞き従わないものがあれば、生かしてはおきません。ただ、強く、また雄々しくあってください」。

Whosoever he be that shall rebel against thy commandment, and shall not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of good courage.

第2章

ヌンの子ヨシュアは、シッテムから、ひそかにふたりの斥候をつかわして彼らに言った、「行って、その地、特にエリコを探りなさい」。彼らは行って、名をラハブという遊女の家にはいり、そこに泊まったが、

And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and Jericho. And they went and came into the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lay there.

エリコの王に、「イスラエルの人々のうちの数名の者が今夜この地を探るために、はいってきました」と言う者があったので、

And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to-night of the children of Israel to search out the land.

エリコの王は人をやってラハブに言った、「あなたの所にきて、あなたの家にはいった人々をここへ出しなさい。彼らはこの国のすべてを探るためにきたのです」。

And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, that are entered into thy house; for they are come to search out all the land.

しかし、女はすでにそのふたりの人を入れて彼らを隠していた。そして彼女は言った、「確かにその人々はわたしの所にきました。しかし、わたしはその人々がどこからきたのか知りませんでしたが、

And the woman took the two men, and hid them; and she said, Yea, the men came unto me, but I knew not whence they were:

たそがれ時、門の閉じるころに、その人々は出て行きました。どこへ行ったのかわたしは知りません。急いであとを追いなさい。追いつけるでしょう」。

and it came to pass about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; whither the men went I know not: pursue after them quickly; for ye will overtake them.

その実、彼女はすでに彼らを連れて屋根にのぼり、屋上に並べてあった亜麻の茎の中に彼らを隠していたのである。

But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

そこでその人々は彼らのあとを追ってヨルダンの道を進み、渡し場へ向かった。あとを追う者が出て行くとすぐ門は閉ざされた。

And the men pursued after them the way to the Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they that pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

ふたりの人がまだ寝ないうち、ラハブは屋上にのぼって彼らの所にきた。

And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;

そして彼らに言った、「主がこの地をあなたがたに賜わったこと、わたしたちがあなたがたをひじょうに恐れていること、そしてこの地の民がみなあなたがたの前に震えおののいていることをわたしは知っています。

and she said unto the men, I know that Jehovah hath given you the land, and that the fear of you is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

あなたがたがエジプトから出てこられた時、主があなたがたの前で紅海の水を干されたこと、およびあなたがたが、ヨルダンの向こう側にいたアモリびとのふたりの王シホンとオグにされたこと、すなわちふたりを、全滅されたことを、わたしたちは聞いたからです。

For we have heard how Jehovah dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, unto Sihon and to Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

わたしたちはそれを聞くと、心は消え、あなたがたのゆえに人々は全く勇気を失ってしまいました。あなたがたの神、主は上の天にも、下の地にも、神でいらせられるからです。

And as soon as we had heard it, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Jehovah your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

それで、どうか、わたしがあなたがたを親切に扱ったように、あなたがたも、わたしの父の家を親切に扱われることをいま主をさして誓い、確かなしるしをください。

Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by Jehovah, since I have dealt kindly with you, that ye also will deal kindly with my father`s house, and give me a true token;

そしてわたしの父母、兄弟、姉妹およびすべて彼らに属するものを生きながらえさせ、わたしたちの命を救って、死を免れさせてください」。

and that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.

ふたりの人は彼女に言った、「もしあなたがたが、われわれのこのことを他に漏らさないならば、われわれは命にかけて、あなたがたを救います。また主がわれわれにこの地を賜わる時、あなたがたを親切に扱い、真実をつくしましょう」。

And the men said unto her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business; and it shall be, when Jehovah giveth us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

そこでラハブは綱をもって彼らを窓からつりおろした。その家が町の城壁の上に建っていて、彼女はその城壁の上に住んでいたからである。

Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the side of the wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

ラハブは彼らに言った、「追手に会わないように、あなたがたは山へ行って、三日の間そこに身を隠し、追手の帰って行くのを待って、それから去って行きなさい」。

And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers light upon you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.

ふたりの人は彼女に言った、「あなたがわれわれに誓わせたこの誓いについて、われわれは罪を犯しません。

And the men said unto her, We will be guiltless of this thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

われわれがこの地に討ち入る時、わたしたちをつりおろした窓に、この赤い糸のひもを結びつけ、またあなたの父母、兄弟、およびあなたの父の家族をみなあなたの家に集めなさい。

Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt gather unto thee into the house thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father`s household.

ひとりでも家の戸口から外へ出て、血を流されることがあれば、その責めはその人自身のこうべに帰すでしょう。われわれに罪はありません。しかしあなたの家の中にいる人に手をかけて血を流すことがあれば、その責めはわれわれのこうべに帰すでしょう。

And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we shall be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

またあなたが、われわれのこのことを他に漏らすならば、あなたがわれわれに誓わせた誓いについては、われわれに罪はありません」。

But if thou utter this our business, then we shall be guiltless of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

ラハブは言った、「あなたがたの仰せのとおりにいたしましょう」。こうして彼らを送り出したので、彼らは去った。そして彼女は赤いひもを窓に結んだ。

And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.

こうしてふたりの人はまた山を下り、川を渡って、ヌンの子ヨシュアのもとにきて、その身に起ったことをつぶさに述べた。

Then the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had befallen them.

そしてヨシュアに言った、「ほんとうに主はこの国をことごとくわれわれの手にお与えになりました。この国の住民はみなわれわれの前に震えおののいています」。

And they said unto Joshua, Truly Jehovah hath delivered into our hands all the land; and moreover all the inhabitants of the land do melt away before us.

第3章

ヨシュアは朝早く起き、イスラエルの人々すべてとともにシッテムを出立して、ヨルダンに行き、それを渡らずに、そこに宿った。

And Joshua rose up early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel; and they lodged there before they passed over.

三日の後、つかさたちは宿営の中を行き巡り、

And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the midst of the camp;

民に命じて言った、「レビびとである祭司たちが、あなたがたの神、主の契約の箱をかきあげるのを見るならば、あなたがたはその所を出立して、そのあとに従わなければならない。

and they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of Jehovah your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.

そうすれば、あなたがたは行くべき道を知ることができるであろう。あなたがたは前にこの道をとおったことがないからである。しかし、あなたがたと箱との間には、おおよそ二千キュビトの距離をおかなければならない。それに近づいてはならない」。

Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go; for ye have not passed this way heretofore.

ヨシュアはまた民に言った、「あなたがたは身を清めなさい。あす、主があなたがたのうちに不思議を行われるからである」。

And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow Jehovah will do wonders among you.

ヨシュアは祭司たちに言った、「契約の箱をかき、民に先立って渡りなさい」。そこで彼らは契約の箱をかき、民に先立って進んだ。

And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.

主はヨシュアに言われた、「きょうからわたしはすべてのイスラエルの前にあなたを尊い者とするであろう。こうしてわたしがモーセと共にいたように、あなたとともにおることを彼らに知らせるであろう。

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.

あなたは契約の箱をかく祭司たちに命じて言わなければならない、『あなたがたは、ヨルダンの水ぎわへ行くと、すぐ、ヨルダンの中に立ちとどまらなければならない』」。

And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, ye shall stand still in the Jordan.

ヨシュアはイスラエルの人々に言った、「あなたがたはここに近づいて、あなたがたの神、主の言葉を聞きなさい」。

And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of Jehovah your God.

そしてヨシュアは言った、「生ける神があなたがたのうちにおいでになり、あなたがたの前から、カナンびと、ヘテびと、ヒビびと、ペリジびと、ギルガシびと、アモリびと、エブスびとを、必ず追い払われることを、次のことによって、あなたがたは知るであろう。

And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Hivite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Jebusite.

ごらんなさい。全地の主の契約の箱は、あなたがたに先立ってヨルダンを渡ろうとしている。

Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over before you into the Jordan.

それゆえ、今、イスラエルの部族のうちから、部族ごとにひとりずつ、合わせて十二人を選びなさい。

Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, for every tribe a man.

全地の主なる神の箱をかく祭司たちの足の裏が、ヨルダンの水の中に踏みとどまる時、ヨルダンの水は流れをせきとめられ、上から流れくだる水はとどまって、うず高くなるであろう」。

And it shall come to pass, when the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of Jehovah, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, even the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand in one heap.

こうして民はヨルダンを渡ろうとして天幕をいで立ち、祭司たちは契約の箱をかき、民に先立って行ったが、

And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over the Jordan, the priests that bare the ark of the covenant being before the people;

箱をかく者がヨルダンにきて、箱をかく祭司たちの足が水ぎわにひたると同時に、――ヨルダンは刈入れの間中、岸一面にあふれるのであるが、――

and when they that bare the ark were come unto the Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (for the Jordan overfloweth all its banks all the time of harvest,)

上から流れくだる水はとどまって、はるか遠くのザレタンのかたわらにある町アダムのあたりで、うず高く立ち、アラバの海すなわち塩の海の方に流れくだる水は全くせきとめられたので、民はエリコに向かって渡った。

that the waters which came down from above stood, and rose up in one heap, a great way off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those that went down toward the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, were wholly cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

すべてのイスラエルが、かわいた地を渡って行く間、主の契約の箱をかく祭司たちは、ヨルダンの中のかわいた地に立っていた。そしてついに民はみなヨルダンを渡り終った。

And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel passed over on dry ground, until all the nation were passed clean over the Jordan.

第4章

民が皆、ヨルダンを渡り終った時、主はヨシュアに言われた、

And it came to pass, when all the nation were clean passed over the Jordan, that Jehovah spake unto Joshua, saying,

「民のうちから、部族ごとにひとりずつ、合わせて十二人を選び、

Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,

彼らに命じて言いなさい、『ヨルダンの中で祭司たちが足を踏みとどめたその所から、石十二を取り、それを携えて渡り、今夜あなたがたが宿る場所にすえなさい』」。

and command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of the Jordan, out of the place where the priests` feet stood firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place, where ye shall lodge this night.

そこでヨシュアはイスラエルの人々のうちから、部族ごとに、ひとりずつ、かねて定めておいた十二人の者を召し寄せ、

Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:

ヨシュアは彼らに言った、「あなたがたの神、主の契約の箱の前に立って行き、ヨルダンの中に進み入り、イスラエルの人々の部族の数にしたがって、おのおの石一つを取り上げ、肩にのせて運びなさい。

and Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of Jehovah your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel;

これはあなたがたのうちに、しるしとなるであろう。後の日になって、あなたがたの子どもたちが、『これらの石は、どうしたわけですか』と問うならば、

that this may be a sign among you, that, when your children ask in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?

その時あなたがたは彼らに、むかしヨルダンの水が、主の契約の箱の前で、せきとめられたこと、すなわちその箱がヨルダンを渡った時、ヨルダンの水が、せきとめられたことを告げなければならない。こうして、それらの石は永久にイスラエルの人々の記念となるであろう」。

then ye shall say unto them, Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah; when it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

イスラエルの人々はヨシュアが命じたようにし、主がヨシュアに言われたように、イスラエルの人々の部族の数にしたがって、ヨルダンの中から十二の石を取り、それを携えて渡り、彼らの宿る場所へ行って、そこにすえた。

And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as Jehovah spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.

ヨシュアはまたヨルダンの中で、契約の箱をかく祭司たちが、足を踏みとどめた所に、十二の石を立てたが、今日まで、そこに残っている。

And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests that bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.

箱をかく祭司たちは、主がヨシュアに命じて、民に告げさせられた事が、すべて行われてしまうまで、ヨルダンの中に立っていた。すべてモーセがヨシュアに命じたとおりである。民は急いで渡った。

For the priests that bare the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan, until everything was finished that Jehovah commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.

民がみな渡り終った時、主の箱と祭司たちとは、民の見る前で渡った。

And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of Jehovah passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.

ルベンの子孫とガドの子孫、およびマナセの部族の半ばは、モーセが彼らに命じていたように武装して、イスラエルの人々に先立って渡り、

And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:

戦いのために武装したおおよそ四万の者が戦うため、主の前に渡って、エリコの平野に着いた。

about forty thousand ready armed for war passed over before Jehovah unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.

この日、主はイスラエルのすべての人の前にヨシュアを尊い者とされたので、彼らはみなモーセを敬ったように、ヨシュアを一生のあいだ敬った。

On that day Jehovah magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

主はヨシュアに言われた、

And Jehovah spake unto Joshua, saying,

「あかしの箱をかく祭司たちに命じて、ヨルダンから上がってこさせなさい」。

Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Jordan.

ヨシュアは祭司たちに命じて言った、「ヨルダンから上がってきなさい」。

Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of the Jordan.

主の契約の箱をかく祭司たちはヨルダンの中から上がってきたが、祭司たちの足の裏がかわいた地にあがると同時に、ヨルダンの水はもとの所に流れかえって、以前のように、その岸にことごとくあふれた。

And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah were come up out of the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests` feet were lifted up unto the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned unto their place, and went over all its banks, as aforetime.

民は正月の十日に、ヨルダンから上がってきて、エリコの東の境にあるギルガルに宿営した。

And the people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho.

そしてヨシュアは、人々がヨルダンから取ってきた十二の石をギルガルに立て、

And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, did Joshua set up in Gilgal.

イスラエルの人々に言った、「後の日にあなたがたの子どもたちが、その父に『これらの石は、どうしたわけですか』とたずねたならば、

And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?

『むかしイスラエルがこのヨルダンを、かわいた地にされて渡ったのだ』と言って、その子どもたちに知らせなければならない。

Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.

すなわちあなたがたの神、主はヨルダンの水を、あなたがたのために干しからして、あなたがたを渡らせてくださった。それはあたかも、あなたがたの神、主が、われわれのために紅海を干しからして、われわれを渡らせてくださったのと同じである。

For Jehovah your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as Jehovah your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were passed over;

このようにされたのは、地のすべての民に、主の手に力のあることを知らせ、あなたがたの神、主をつねに恐れさせるためである」。

that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of Jehovah, that it is mighty; that ye may fear Jehovah your God for ever.

第5章

ヨルダンの向こう側、すなわち西の方におるアモリびとの王たちと、海べにおるカナンびとの王たちとは皆、主がイスラエルの人々の前で、ヨルダンの水を干しからして、彼らを渡らせられたと聞いて、イスラエルの人々のゆえに、心は消え、彼らのうちに、もはや元気もなくなった。

And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, that were by the sea, heard how that Jehovah had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「火打石の小刀を造り、重ねてまたイスラエルの人々に割礼を行いなさい」。

At that time Jehovah said unto Joshua, Make thee knives of flint, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

そこでヨシュアは火打石の小刀を造り、陽皮の丘で、イスラエルの人々に割礼を行った。

And Joshua made him knives of lint, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

ヨシュアが人々に割礼を行った理由はこうである。エジプトから出てきた民のうちの、すべての男子、すなわち、いくさびとたちは皆、エジプトを出た後、途中、荒野で死んだが、

And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: all the people that came forth out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came forth out of Egypt.

その出てきた民は皆、割礼を受けた者であった。しかし、エジプトを出た後に、途中、荒野で生まれた民は、みな割礼を受けていなかった。

For all the people that came out were circumcised; but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, they had not circumcised.

イスラエルの人々は四十年の間、荒野を歩いていて、そのエジプトから出てきた民、すなわち、いくさびとたちは、みな死に絶えた。これは彼らが主の声に聞き従わなかったので、主は彼らの先祖たちに誓って、われわれに与えると仰せられた地、乳と蜜の流れる地を、彼らに見させないと誓われたからである。

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the nation, even the men of war that came forth out of Egypt, were consumed, because they hearkened not unto the voice of Jehovah: unto whom Jehovah sware that he would not let them see the land which Jehovah sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

ヨシュアが割礼を行ったのは、この人々についで起されたその子どもたちであった。彼らは途中で割礼を受けていなかったので、無割礼の者であったからである。

And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them did Joshua circumcise: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

すべての民に割礼を行うことが終ったので、民は宿営のうちの自分の所にとどまって傷の直るのを待った。

And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the nation, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.

その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「きょう、わたしはエジプトのはずかしめを、あなたがたからころがし去った」。それでその所の名は、今日までギルガルと呼ばれている。

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of that place was called Gilgal, unto this day.

イスラエルの人々はギルガルに宿営していたが、その月の十四日の夕暮、エリコの平野で過越の祭を行った。

And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal; and they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

そして過越の祭の翌日、その地の穀物、すなわち種入れぬパンおよびいり麦を、その日に食べたが、

And they did eat of the produce of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes and parched grain, in the selfsame day.

その地の穀物を食べた翌日から、マナの降ることはやみ、イスラエルの人々は、もはやマナを獲なかった。その年はカナンの地の産物を食べた。

And the manna ceased on the morrow, after they had eaten of the produce of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

ヨシュアがエリコの近くにいたとき、目を上げて見ると、ひとりの人が抜き身のつるぎを手に持ち、こちらに向かって立っていたので、ヨシュアはその人のところへ行って言った、「あなたはわれわれを助けるのですか。それともわれわれの敵を助けるのですか」。

And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

彼は言った、「いや、わたしは主の軍勢の将として今きたのだ」。ヨシュアは地にひれ伏し拝して言った、「わが主は何をしもべに告げようとされるのですか」。

And he said, Nay; but [as] prince of the host of Jehovah am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?

すると主の軍勢の将はヨシュアに言った、「あなたの足のくつを脱ぎなさい。あなたが立っている所は聖なる所である」。ヨシュアはそのようにした。

And the prince of Jehovah`s host said unto Joshua, Put off thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

第6章

さてエリコは、イスラエルの人々のゆえに、かたく閉ざして、出入りするものがなかった。

Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.

主はヨシュアに言われた、「見よ、わたしはエリコと、その王および大勇士を、あなたの手にわたしている。

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thy hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valor.

あなたがた、いくさびとはみな、町を巡って、町の周囲を一度回らなければならない。六日の間そのようにしなければならない。

And ye shall compass the city, all the men of war, going about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.

七人の祭司たちは、おのおの雄羊の角のラッパを携えて、箱に先立たなければならない。そして七日目には七度町を巡り、祭司たちはラッパを吹き鳴らさなければならない。

And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams` horns before the ark: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.

そして祭司たちが雄羊の角を長く吹き鳴らし、そのラッパの音が、あなたがたに聞える時、民はみな大声に呼ばわり、叫ばなければならない。そうすれば、町の周囲の石がきは、くずれ落ち、民はみなただちに進んで、攻め上ることができる」。

And it shall be, that, when they make a long blast with the ram`s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him.

ヌンの子ヨシュアは祭司たちを召して言った、「あなたがたは契約の箱をかき、七人の祭司たちは雄羊の角のラッパ七本を携えて、主の箱に先立たなければならない」。

And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams` horns before the ark of Jehovah.

そして民に言った、「あなたがたは進んで行って町を巡りなさい。武装した者は主の箱に先立って進まなければならない」。

And they said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let the armed men pass on before the ark of Jehovah.

ヨシュアが民に命じたように、七人の祭司たちは、雄羊の角のラッパ七本を携えて、主に先立って進み、ラッパを吹き鳴らした。主の契約の箱はそのあとに従った。

And it was so, that, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams` horns before Jehovah passed on, and blew the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah followed them.

武装した者はラッパを吹き鳴らす祭司たちに先立って行き、しんがりは箱に従った。ラッパは絶え間なく鳴り響いた。

And the armed men went before the priests that blew the trumpets, and the rearward went after the ark, [the priests] blowing the trumpets as they went.

しかし、ヨシュアは民に命じて言った、「あなたがたは呼ばわってはならない。あなたがたの声を聞えさせてはならない。また口から言葉を出してはならない。ただ、わたしが呼ばわれと命じる日に、あなたがたは呼ばわらなければならない」。

And Joshua commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.

こうして主の箱を持って、町を巡らせ、その周囲を一度回らせた。人々は宿営に帰り、夜を宿営で過ごした。

So he caused the ark of Jehovah to compass the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

翌朝ヨシュアは早く起き、祭司たちは主の箱をかき、

And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of Jehovah.

七人の祭司たちは、雄羊の角のラッパ七本を携えて、主の箱に先立ち、絶えず、ラッパを吹き鳴らして進み、武装した者はこれに先立って行き、しんがりは主の箱に従った。ラッパは絶え間なく鳴り響いた。

And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams` horns before the ark of Jehovah went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; and the rearward came after the ark of Jehovah, [the priests] blowing the trumpets as they went.

その次の日にも、町の周囲を一度巡って宿営に帰った。六日の間そのようにした。

And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.

七日目には、夜明けに、早く起き、同じようにして、町を七度めぐった。町を七度めぐったのはこの日だけであった。

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on the day they compassed the city seven times.

七度目に、祭司たちがラッパを吹いた時、ヨシュアは民に言った、「呼ばわりなさい。主はこの町をあなたがたに賜わった。

And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for Jehovah hath given you the city.

この町と、その中のすべてのものは、主への奉納物として滅ぼされなければならない。ただし遊女ラハブと、その家に共におる者はみな生かしておかなければならない。われわれが送った使者たちをかくまったからである。

And the city shall be devoted, even it and all that is therein, to Jehovah: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

また、あなたがたは、奉納物に手を触れてはならない。奉納に当り、その奉納物をみずから取って、イスラエルの宿営を、滅ぼさるべきものとし、それを悩ますことのないためである。

But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when ye have devoted it, ye take of the devoted thing; so would ye make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it.

ただし、銀と金、青銅と鉄の器は、みな主に聖なる物であるから、主の倉に携え入れなければならない」。

But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy unto Jehovah: they shall come into the treasury of Jehovah.

そこで民は呼ばわり、祭司たちはラッパを吹き鳴らした。民はラッパの音を聞くと同時に、みな大声をあげて呼ばわったので、石がきはくずれ落ちた。そこで民はみな、すぐに上って町にはいり、町を攻め取った。

So the people shouted, and [the priests] blew the trumpets; and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

そして町にあるものは、男も、女も、若い者も、老いた者も、また牛、羊、ろばをも、ことごとくつるぎにかけて滅ぼした。

And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

その時ヨシュアは、この地を探ったふたりの人に言った、「あの遊女の家にはいって、その女と彼女に属するすべてのものを連れ出し、彼女に誓ったようにしなさい」。

And Joshua said unto the two men that had spied out the land, Go into the harlot`s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

斥候となったその若い人たちははいって、ラハブとその父母、兄弟、そのほか彼女に属するすべてのものを連れ出し、その親族をみな連れ出して、イスラエルの宿営の外に置いた。

And the young men the spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; all her kindred also they brought out; and they set them without the camp of Israel.

そして火で町とその中のすべてのものを焼いた。ただ、銀と金、青銅と鉄の器は、主の家の倉に納めた。

And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein; only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of Jehovah.

しかし、遊女ラハブとその父の家の一族と彼女に属するすべてのものとは、ヨシュアが生かしておいたので、ラハブは今日までイスラエルのうちに住んでいる。これはヨシュアがエリコを探らせるためにつかわした使者たちをかくまったためである。

But Rahab the harlot, and her father`s household, and all that she had, did Joshua save alive; and she dwelt in the midst of Israel unto this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

ヨシュアは、その時、人々に誓いを立てて言った、「おおよそ立って、このエリコの町を再建する人は、主の前にのろわれるであろう。その礎をすえる人は長子を失い、その門を建てる人は末の子を失うであろう」。

And Joshua charged them with an oath at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before Jehovah, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: with the loss of his first-born shall he lay the foundation thereof, and with the loss of his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.

主はヨシュアと共におられ、ヨシュアの名声は、あまねくその地に広がった。

So Jehovah was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.

第7章

しかし、イスラエルの人々は奉納物について罪を犯した。すなわちユダの部族のうちの、ゼラの子ザブデの子であるカルミの子アカンが奉納物を取ったのである。それで主はイスラエルの人々にむかって怒りを発せられた。

But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted thing; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the devoted thing: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the children of Israel.

ヨシュアはエリコから人々をつかわし、ベテルの東、ベテアベンの近くにあるアイに行かせようとして、その人々に言った、「上って行って、かの地を探ってきなさい」。人々は上って行って、アイを探ったが、

And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. And the men went up and spied out Ai.

ヨシュアのもとに帰ってきて言った、「民をことごとく行かせるには及びません。ただ二、三千人を上らせて、アイを撃たせなさい。彼らは少ないのですから、民をことごとくあそこへやってほねおりをさせるには及びません」。

And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; make not all the people to toil thither; for they are but few.

そこで民のうち、おおよそ三千人がそこに上ったが、ついにアイの人々の前から逃げ出した。

So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

アイの人々は彼らのうち、おおよそ三十六人を殺し、更に彼らを門の前からシバリムまで追って、下り坂で彼らを殺したので、民の心は消えて水のようになった。

And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men; and they chased them [from] before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them at the descent; and the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

そのためヨシュアは衣服を裂き、イスラエルの長老たちと共に、主の箱の前で、夕方まで地にひれ伏し、ちりをかぶった。

And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of Jehovah until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads.

ヨシュアは言った、「ああ、主なる神よ、あなたはなにゆえ、この民にヨルダンを渡らせ、われわれをアモリびとの手に渡して滅ぼさせられるのですか。われわれはヨルダンの向こうに、安んじてとどまればよかったのです。

And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? would that we had been content and dwelt beyond the Jordan!

ああ、主よ。イスラエルがすでに敵に背をむけた今となって、わたしはまた何を言い得ましょう。

Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel hath turned their backs before their enemies!

カナンびと、およびこの地に住むすべてのものは、これを聞いて、われわれを攻めかこみ、われわれの名を地から断ち去ってしまうでしょう。それであなたは、あなたの大いなる名のために、何をしようとされるのですか」。

For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will compass us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do for thy great name?

主はヨシュアに言われた、「立ちなさい。あなたはどうして、そのようにひれ伏しているのか。

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore art thou thus fallen upon thy face?

イスラエルは罪を犯し、わたしが彼らに命じておいた契約を破った。彼らは奉納物を取り、盗み、かつ偽って、それを自分の所有物のうちに入れた。

Israel hath sinned; yea, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: yea, they have even taken of the devoted thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also; and they have even put it among their own stuff.

それでイスラエルの人々は敵に当ることができず、敵に背をむけた。彼らも滅ぼされるべきものとなったからである。あなたがたが、その滅ぼされるべきものを、あなたがたのうちから滅ぼし去るのでなければ、わたしはもはやあなたがたとは共にいないであろう。

Therefore the children of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they are become accursed: I will not be with you any more, except ye destroy the devoted thing from among you.

立って、民を清めて言いなさい、『あなたがたは身を清めて、あすのために備えなさい。イスラエルの神、主はこう仰せられる、「イスラエルよ、あなたがたのうちに、滅ぼされるべきものがある。その滅ぼされるべきものを、あなたがたのうちから除き去るまでは、敵に当ることはできないであろう」。

Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, There is a devoted thing in the midst of thee, O Israel; thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the devoted thing from among you.

それゆえ、あすの朝、あなたがたは部族ごとに進み出なければならない。そして主がくじを当てられる部族は、氏族ごとに進みいで、主がくじを当てられる氏族は、家族ごとに進みいで、主がくじを当てられる家族は、男ひとりびとり進み出なければならない。

In the morning therefore ye shall be brought near by your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which Jehovah taketh shall come near by families; and the family which Jehovah shall take shall come near by households; and the household which Jehovah shall take shall come near man by man.

そしてその滅ぼされるべきものを持っていて、くじを当てられた者は、その持ち物全部と共に、火で焼かれなければならない。主の契約を破りイスラエルのうちに愚かなことを行ったからである』」。

And it shall be, that he that is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath; because he hath transgressed the covenant of Jehovah, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

こうしてヨシュアは朝早く起き、イスラエルを部族ごとに進み出させたところ、ユダの部族がくじに当り、

So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel near by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

ユダのもろもろの氏族を進み出させたところ、ゼラびとの氏族が、くじに当った。ゼラびとの氏族を家族ごとに進み出させたところ、ザブデの家族が、くじに当った。

and he brought near the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zerahites: and he brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:

ザブデの家族を男ひとりびとり進み出させたところ、アカンがくじに当った。アカンはユダの部族のうちの、ゼラの子、ザブデの子なるカルミの子である。

and he brought near his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

その時ヨシュアはアカンに言った、「わが子よ、イスラエルの神、主に栄光を帰し、また主をさんびし、あなたのしたことを今わたしに告げなさい。わたしに隠してはならない」。

And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to Jehovah, the God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

アカンはヨシュアに答えた、「ほんとうにわたしはイスラエルの神、主に対して罪を犯しました。わたしがしたのはこうです。

And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Of a truth I have sinned against Jehovah, the God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

わたしはぶんどり物のうちに、シナルの美しい外套一枚と銀二百シケルと、目方五十シケルの金の延べ棒一本のあるのを見て、ほしくなり、それを取りました。わたしの天幕の中に、地に隠してあります。銀はその下にあります」。

when I saw among the spoil a goodly Babylonish mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

そこでヨシュアは使者たちをつかわした。使者たちが天幕に走っていって見ると、それは彼の天幕に隠してあって、銀もその下にあった。

So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

彼らはそれを天幕の中から取り出して、ヨシュアとイスラエルのすべての人々の所に携えてきたので、それを主の前に置いた。

And they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel; and they laid them down before Jehovah.

ヨシュアはすべてのイスラエルびとと共に、ゼラの子アカンを捕え、かの銀と外套と金の延べ棒、および彼のむすこ、娘、牛、ろば、羊、天幕など、彼の持ち物をことごとく取って、アコルの谷へ引いていった。

And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them up unto the valley of Achor.

そしてヨシュアは言った、「なぜあなたはわれわれを悩ましたのか。主は、きょう、あなたを悩まされるであろう」。やがてすべてのイスラエルびとは石で彼を撃ち殺し、また彼の家族をも石で撃ち殺し、火をもって焼いた。

And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? Jehovah shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.

そしてアカンの上に石塚を大きく積み上げたが、それは今日まで残っている。そして主は激しい怒りをやめられたが、このことによって、その所の名は今日までアコルの谷と呼ばれている。

And they raised over him a great heap of stones, unto this day; and Jehovah turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

第8章

主はヨシュアに言われた、「恐れてはならない、おののいてはならない。いくさびとを皆、率い、立って、アイに攻め上りなさい。わたしはアイの王とその民、その町、その地をあなたの手に授ける。

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land;

あなたは、さきにエリコとその王にしたとおり、アイとその王とにしなければならない。ただし、ぶんどり物と家畜とは戦利品としてあなたがたのものとすることができるであろう。あなたはまず、町のうしろに伏兵を置きなさい」。

And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: set thee an ambush for the city behind it.

ヨシュアは立って、すべてのいくさびとと共に、アイに攻め上ろうとして、まず大勇士三万人を選び、それを夜のうちにつかわした。

So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them forth by night.

ヨシュアは彼らに命じて言った、「あなたがたは町に向かって、町のうしろに伏せていなければならない。町を遠く離れないで、みな備えをしていなければならない。

And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city; go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

わたしとわたしに従う民とは皆共に、町に攻め寄せよう。そして彼らが前のようにわれわれにむかって出てくるとき、われわれは彼らの前から逃げるであろう。

and I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city. And it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them;

そうすれば彼らはわれわれを追って出てくるであろうから、われわれはついに彼らを町からおびき出すことができる。彼らは言うであろう、『この人々はまた前のように、われわれの前から逃げていく』。こうしてわれわれは彼らの前から逃げるであろう。

and they will come out after us, till we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: so we will flee before them;

その時、あなたがたは伏せている所から立ち上がって、町を取らなければならない。あなたがたの神、主がそれをあなたがたの手に与えられるからである。

and ye shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city: for Jehovah your God will deliver it into your hand.

あなたがたが、町を取ったならば、町に火を放ち、主が命じられたようにしなければならない。わたしはこう、あなたがたに命じるのである」。

And it shall be, when ye have seized upon the city, that ye shall set the city on fire; according to the word of Jehovah shall ye do: see, I have commanded you.

そうしてヨシュアが彼らをつかわしたので、彼らはアイの西方、ベテルとアイの間の待ち伏せする場所に行って身を伏せた。ヨシュアはその夜、民の中に宿った。

And Joshua sent them forth; and they went to the ambushment, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

ヨシュアは明くる朝、早く起きて、民を集め、イスラエルの長老たちと共に、民に先立って、アイに上っていった。

And Joshua arose up early in the morning, and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

彼と共にいたいくさびとたちもみな上っていって、町の前に近づき、アイの北に陣を取った。彼らとアイの間には、一つの谷があった。

And all the people, [even] the [men of] war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and encamped on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between him and Ai.

ヨシュアはおおよそ五千人をとって、町の西方、ベテルとアイの間に、伏せておいた。

And he took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of the city.

こうして民の主力を町の北におき、しんがりを町の西においた。ヨシュアはその夜、谷の中で宿った。

So they set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers-in-wait that were on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

アイの王はこれを見て、すべての民と共に、急いで、早く起き、アラバに行く下り坂に進み出て、イスラエルと戦った。しかし、王は町のうしろに、すきをうかがう伏兵のおることを知らなかった。

And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he knew not that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

ヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人々と共に、彼らに打ち破られたふりをして、荒野の方向へ逃げだしたので、

And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

その町の民はみな呼ばわり集まって彼らのあとを追い、ヨシュアのあとを追って町からおびき出され、

And all the people that were in the city were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

アイにもベテルにも残っているものはひとりもなく、みな出てイスラエルのあとを追い、町を開け放して、イスラエルのあとを追った。

And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「あなたの手にあるなげやりを、アイの方にさし伸べなさい。わたしはその町をあなたの手に与えるであろう」。そこでヨシュアが手にしていたなげやりを、アイの方にさし伸べると、

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Stretch out the javelin that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thy hand. And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

伏兵はたちまちその場所から立ち上がり、ヨシュアが手をのべると同時に、走って町に入り、それを取って、ただちに町に火をかけた。

And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and set the city on fire.

それでアイの人々が、うしろをふり返って見ると、町の焼ける煙が天に立ちのぼっていたので、こちらへもあちらへも逃げるすべがなかった。荒野へ逃げていった民も身をかえして、追ってきた者に迫った。

And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

ヨシュアとすべてのイスラエルびとは、伏兵が町を取り、町の焼ける煙が立ち上るのを見て、身をかえしてアイの人々を撃った。

And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

また町を取ったものは町を出て彼らに向かったので、彼らは、こちらとあちらとからイスラエルの中にはさまれた。こうしてイスラエルびとが彼らを撃ったので、生き残ったもの、逃げおおせたものは、ひとりもなかった。

And the others came forth out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

そしてアイの王を生けどりにして、ヨシュアのもとへ連れてきた。

And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

イスラエルびとは、荒野に追撃してきたアイの住民をことごとく野で殺し、つるぎをもってひとりも残さず撃ち倒してのち、皆アイに帰り、つるぎをもってその町を撃ち滅ぼした。

And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they pursued them, and they were all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Israel returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

その日アイの人々はことごとく倒れた。その数は男女あわせて一万二千人であった。

And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

ヨシュアはアイの住民をことごとく滅ぼしつくすまでは、なげやりをさし伸べた手を引っこめなかった。

For Joshua drew not back his hand, wherewith he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

ただし、その町の家畜および、ぶんどり品はイスラエルびとが自分たちの戦利品として取った。主がヨシュアに命じられた言葉にしたがったのである。

Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for prey unto themselves, according unto the word of Jehovah which he commanded Joshua.

こうしてヨシュアはアイを焼いて、永久に荒塚としたが、それは今日まで荒れ地となっている。

So Joshua burnt Ai, and made it a heap for ever, even a desolation, unto this day.

ヨシュアはまた、アイの王を夕方まで木に掛けてさらし、日の入るころ、命じて、その死体を木から取りおろし、町の門の入口に投げすて、その上に石の大塚を積み上げさせたが、それは今日まで残っている。

And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until the eventide: and at the going down of the sun Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, and cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised thereon a great heap of stones, unto this day.

そしてヨシュアはエバル山にイスラエルの神、主のために一つの祭壇を築いた。

Then Joshua built an altar unto Jehovah, the God of Israel, in mount Ebal,

これは主のしもべモーセがイスラエルの人々に命じたことにもとづき、モーセの律法の書にしるされているように、鉄の道具を当てない自然のままの石の祭壇であって、人々はその上で、主に燔祭をささげ、酬恩祭を供えた。

as Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of unhewn stones, upon which no man had lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt-offerings unto Jehovah, and sacrificed peace-offerings.

その所で、ヨシュアはまたモーセの書きしるした律法を、イスラエルの人々の前で、石に書き写した。

And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote, in the presence of the children of Israel.

こうしてすべてのイスラエルびとは、本国人も、寄留の他国人も、長老、つかさびと、さばきびとと共に、主の契約の箱をかくレビびとである祭司たちの前で、箱のこなたとかなたに分れて、半ばはゲリジム山の前に、半ばはエバル山の前に立った。これは主のしもべモーセがさきに命じたように、イスラエルの民を祝福するためであった。

And all Israel, and their elders and officers, and their judges, stood on this side of the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, as well the sojourner as the homeborn; half of them in front of mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of Jehovah had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.

そして後、ヨシュアはすべての律法の書にしるされている所にしたがって、祝福と、のろいとに関する律法の言葉をことごとく読んだ。

And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

モーセが命じたすべての言葉のうち、ヨシュアがイスラエルの全会衆および女と子どもたち、ならびにイスラエルのうちに住む寄留の他国人の前で、読まなかったものは一つもなかった。

There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the little ones, and the sojourners that were among them.

第9章

さて、ヨルダンの西側の、山地、平地、およびレバノンまでの大海の沿岸に住むもろもろの王たち、すなわちヘテびと、アモリびと、カナンびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとの王たちは、これを聞いて、

And it came to pass, when all the kings that were beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

心を合わせ、相集まって、ヨシュアおよびイスラエルと戦おうとした。

that they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

しかし、ギベオンの住民たちは、ヨシュアがエリコとアイにおこなったことを聞いて、

But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

自分たちも策略をめぐらし、行って食料品を準備し、古びた袋と、古びて破れたのを繕ったぶどう酒の皮袋とを、ろばに負わせ、

they also did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-skins, old and rent and bound up,

繕った古ぐつを足にはき、古びた着物を身につけた。彼らの食料のパンは、みなかわいて、砕けていた。

and old and patched shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and was become mouldy.

彼らはギルガルの陣営のヨシュアの所にきて、彼とイスラエルの人々に言った、「われわれは遠い国からまいりました。それで今われわれと契約を結んでください」。

And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We are come from a far country: now therefore make ye a covenant with us.

しかし、イスラエルの人々はそのヒビびとたちに言った、「あなたがたはわれわれのうちに住んでいるのかも知れないから、われわれはどうしてあなたがたと契約が結べましょう」。

And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a covenant with you?

彼らはヨシュアに言った、「われわれはあなたのしもべです」。ヨシュアは彼らに言った、「あなたがたはだれですか。どこからきたのですか」。

And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

彼らはヨシュアに言った、「しもべどもはあなたの神、主の名のゆえに、ひじょうに遠い国からまいりました。われわれは主の名声、および主がエジプトで行われたすべての事を聞き、

And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of Jehovah thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

また主がヨルダンの向こう側にいたアモリびとのふたりの王、すなわちヘシボンの王シホン、およびアシタロテにおったバシャンの王オグに行われたすべてのことを聞いたからです。

and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

それで、われわれの長老たち、および国の住民はみなわれわれに言いました、『おまえたちは旅路の食料を手に携えていって、彼らに会って言いなさい、「われわれはあなたがたのしもべです。それで今われわれと契約を結んでください」』。

And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: and now make ye a covenant with us.

ここにあるこのパンは、あなたがたの所に来るため、われわれが出立する日に、おのおの家から、まだあたたかなのを旅の食料として準備したのですが、今はもうかわいて砕けています。

This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and is become mouldy:

またぶどう酒を満たしたこれらの皮袋も、新しかったのですが、破れました。われわれのこの着物も、くつも、旅路がひじょうに長かったので、古びてしまいました」。

and these wine-skins, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they are rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

そこでイスラエルの人々は彼らの食料品を共に食べ、主のさしずを求めようとはしなかった。

And the men took of their provision, and asked not counsel at the mouth of Jehovah.

そしてヨシュアは彼らと和を講じ、契約を結んで、彼らを生かしておいた。会衆の長たちは彼らに誓いを立てた。

And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

契約を結んで三日の後に、彼らはその人々が近くの人々で、自分たちのうちに住んでいるということを聞いた。

And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them.

イスラエルの人々は進んで、三日目にその町々に着いた。その町々とは、ギベオン、ケピラ、ベエロテおよびキリアテ・ヤリムであった。

And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.

ところで会衆の長たちが、すでにイスラエルの神、主をさして彼らに誓いを立てていたので、イスラエルの人々は彼らを殺さなかった。そこで会衆はみな、長たちにむかってつぶやいた。

And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by Jehovah, the God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

しかし、長たちは皆、全会衆に言った、「われわれはイスラエルの神、主をさして彼らに誓った。それゆえ今、彼らに触れてはならない。

But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by Jehovah, the God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

われわれは、こうして彼らを生かしておこう。そうすれば、われわれが彼らに立てた誓いのゆえに、怒りがわれわれに臨むことはないであろう」。

This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

長たちはまた人々に「彼らを生かしておこう」と言ったので、彼らはついに、全会衆のために、たきぎを切り、水をくむものとなった。長たちが彼らに言ったとおりである。

And the princes said unto them, Let them live: so they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation, as the princes had spoken unto them.

ヨシュアは彼らを呼び寄せて言った、「あなたがたは、われわれのうちに住みながら、なぜ『われわれはあなたがたからは遠く離れている』と言って、われわれをだましたのか。

And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

それであなたがたは今のろわれ、奴隷となってわたしの神の家のために、たきぎを切り、水をくむものが、絶えずあなたがたのうちから出るであろう」。

Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall never fail to be of you bondmen, both hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

彼らはヨシュアに答えて言った、「あなたの神、主がそのしもべモーセに、この地をことごとくあなたがたに与え、この地に住む民をことごとくあなたがたの前から滅ぼし去るようにと、お命じになったことを、しもべどもは明らかに伝え聞きましたので、あなたがたのゆえに、命が危いと、われわれは非常に恐れて、このことをしたのです。

And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that Jehovah thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

われわれは、今、あなたの手のうちにあります。われわれにあなたがして良いと思い、正しいと思うことをしてください」。

And now, behold, we are in thy hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

そこでヨシュアは、彼らにそのようにし、彼らをイスラエルの人々の手から救って殺させなかった。

And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

しかし、ヨシュアは、その日、彼らを、会衆のため、また主の祭壇のため、主が選ばれる場所で、たきぎを切り、水をくむ者とした。これは今日までつづいている。

And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

第10章

エルサレムの王アドニゼデクは、ヨシュアがアイを攻め取って、それを全く滅ぼし、さきにエリコとその王とにしたように、アイとその王にもしたこと、またギベオンの住民が、イスラエルと和を講じて、そのうちにおることを聞き、

Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

大いに恐れた。それは、ギベオンが大きな町であって、王の都にもひとしいものであり、またアイより大きくて、そのうちの人々が、すべて強かったからである。

that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

それでエルサレムの王アドニゼデクは、ヘブロンの王ホハム、ヤルムテの王ピラム、ラキシの王ヤピア、およびエグロンの王デビルに人をつかわして言った、

Wherefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

「わたしの所に上ってきて、わたしを助けてください。われわれはギベオンを撃ちましょう。ギベオンはヨシュアおよびイスラエルの人々と和を講じたからです」。

Come up unto me, and help me, and let us smite Gibeon; for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

アモリびとの五人の王、すなわちエルサレムの王、ヘブロンの王、ヤルムテの王、ラキシの王、およびエグロンの王は兵を集め、そのすべての軍勢を率いて上ってきて、ギベオンに向かって陣を取り、それを攻めて戦った。

Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.

ギベオンの人々は、ギルガルの陣営に人をつかわし、ヨシュアに言った、「あなたの手を引かないで、しもべどもを助けてください。早く、われわれの所に上ってきて、われわれを救い、助けてください。山地に住むアモリびとの王たちがみな集まって、われわれを攻めるからです」。

And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country are gathered together against us.

そこでヨシュアはすべてのいくさびとと、すべての大勇士を率いて、ギルガルから上って行った。

So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.

その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「彼らを恐れてはならない。わたしが彼らをあなたの手にわたしたからである。彼らのうちには、あなたに当ることのできるものは、ひとりもないであろう」。

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thy hands; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

ヨシュアは、ギルガルから、よもすがら進みのぼって、にわかに彼らに攻めよせたところ、

Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly; [for] he went up from Gilgal all the night.

主は彼らを、イスラエルの前に、恐れあわてさせられたので、イスラエルはギベオンで彼らをおびただしく撃ち殺し、ベテホロンの上り坂をとおって逃げる彼らを、アゼカとマッケダまで追撃した。

And Jehovah discomfited them before Israel, and he slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

彼らがイスラエルの前から逃げ走って、ベテホロンの下り坂をおりていた時、主は天から彼らの上に大石を降らし、アゼカにいたるまでもそうされたので、多くの人々が死んだ。イスラエルの人々がつるぎをもって殺したものよりも、雹に打たれて死んだもののほうが多かった。

And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

主がアモリびとをイスラエルの人々にわたされた日に、ヨシュアはイスラエルの人々の前で主にむかって言った、「日よ、ギベオンの上にとどまれ、月よ、アヤロンの谷にやすらえ」。

Then spake Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; And thou, Moon, in the valley of Aijalon.

民がその敵を撃ち破るまで、日はとどまり、月は動かなかった。これはヤシャルの書にしるされているではないか。日が天の中空にとどまって、急いで没しなかったこと、おおよそ一日であった。

And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, Until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

これより先にも、あとにも、主がこのように人の言葉を聞きいれられた日は一日もなかった。主がイスラエルのために戦われたからである。

And there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah hearkened unto the voice of a man: for Jehovah fought for Israel.

こうしてヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人と共にギルガルの陣営に帰った。

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

かの五人の王たちは逃げて行って、マッケダのほら穴に隠れたが、

And these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.

五人の王たちがマッケダのほら穴にかくれているのが見つかったと、ヨシュアに告げる者があったので、

And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.

ヨシュアは言った、「ほら穴の口に大石をころがし、そのそばに人を置いて、守らせなさい。

And Joshua said, Roll great stones unto the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to keep them:

ただし、あなたがたは、そこにとどまらないで、敵のあとを追い、そのしんがりを撃ち、彼らをその町にはいらせてはならない。あなたがたの神、主が彼らをあなたがたの手に渡されたからである」。

but stay not ye; pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for Jehovah your God hath delivered them into your hand.

ヨシュアとイスラエルの人々は、大いに彼らを撃ち殺し、ついに彼らを滅ぼしつくしたが、彼らのうちのがれて生き残った者どもは、堅固な町々に逃げこんだので、

And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,

民はみな安らかにマッケダの陣営のヨシュアのもとに帰ってきたが、イスラエルの人々にむかって舌を鳴らす者はひとりもなかった。

that all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

その時ヨシュアは言った、「ほら穴の口を開いて、ほら穴から、かの五人の王たちを、わたしのもとにひき出しなさい」。

Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth those five kings unto me out of the cave.

やがて、そのようにして、かの五人の王たち、すなわち、エルサレムの王、ヘブロンの王、ヤルムテの王、ラキシの王、およびエグロンの王を、ほら穴から彼のもとにひき出した。

And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

And it came to pass, when they brought forth those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the chiefs of the men of war that went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

ヨシュアは彼らに言った、「恐れおののいてはならない。強くまた雄々しくあれ。あなたがたが攻めて戦うすべての敵には、主がこのようにされるのである」。

And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage: for thus shall Jehovah do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

そして後ヨシュアは彼らを撃って死なせ、五本の木にかけて、夕暮れまで木の上にさらして置いたが、

And afterward Joshua smote them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

日の入るころになって、ヨシュアが命じたので、これを木からおろし、彼らが隠れていたほら穴に投げ入れ、ほら穴の口に大石を置いた。これは今日まで残っている。

And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, unto this very day.

その日ヨシュアはマッケダを取り、つるぎをもって、それと、その王とを撃ち、その中のすべての人を、ことごとく滅ぼして、ひとりも残さず、エリコの王にしたように、マッケダの王にもした。

And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof: he utterly destroyed them and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

こうしてヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、マッケダからリブナに進み、リブナを攻めて戦った。

And Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

主が、それと、その王をも、イスラエルの手に渡されたので、つるぎをもって、それと、その中のすべての人を撃ち滅ぼして、ひとりもその中に残さず、エリコの王にしたように、その王にもした。

and Jehovah delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining in it; and he did unto the king thereof as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

ヨシュアはまたイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、リブナからラキシに進み、これに向かって陣をしき、攻め戦った。

And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

主がラキシをイスラエルの手に渡されたので、ふつか目にこれを取り、つるぎをもって、それと、その中のすべての人を撃ち滅ぼした。すべてリブナにしたとおりであった。

and Jehovah delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel; and he took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

その時、ゲゼルの王ホラムが、ラキシを助けるために上ってきたので、ヨシュアは彼と、その民とを撃ち滅ぼして、ついにひとりも残さなかった。

Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

ヨシュアはまたイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、ラキシからエグロンに進み、これに向かって陣をしき、攻め戦った。

And Joshua passed from Lachish, and all Israel with him, unto Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it;

その日これを取り、つるぎをもって、これを撃ち、その中のすべての人を、ことごとくその日に滅ぼした。すべてラキシにしたとおりであった。

and they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

ヨシュアはまたイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、エグロンからヘブロンに進み上り、これを攻めて戦い、

And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:

それを取って、それと、その王、およびそのすべての町々と、その中のすべての人を、つるぎをもって撃ち滅ぼし、ひとりも残さなかった。すべてエグロンにしたとおりであった。すなわち、それとその中のすべての人を、ことごとく滅ぼした。

and they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls that were therein.

またヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、デビルへひきかえし、これを攻めて戦い、

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it:

それと、その王、およびそのすべての町々を取り、つるぎをもってそれを撃ち、その中のすべての人を、ことごとく滅ぼし、ひとりも残さなかった。彼がデビルと、その王にしたことは、ヘブロンにしたとおりであり、またリブナと、その王にしたとおりであった。

and he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to the king thereof.

こうしてヨシュアはその地の全部、すなわち、山地、ネゲブ、平地、および山腹の地と、そのすべての王たちを撃ち滅ぼして、ひとりも残さず、すべて息のあるものは、ことごとく滅ぼした。イスラエルの神、主が命じられたとおりであった。

So Joshua smote all the land, the hill-country, and the South, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded.

ヨシュアはカデシ・バルネアからガザまでの国々、およびゴセンの全地を撃ち滅ぼして、ギベオンにまで及んだ。

And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

イスラエルの神、主がイスラエルのために戦われたので、ヨシュアはこれらすべての王たちと、その地をいちどきに取った。

And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because Jehovah, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.

そしてヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人を率いて、ギルガルの陣営に帰った。

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

第11章

ハゾルの王ヤビンは、これを聞いて、マドンの王ヨバブ、シムロンの王、およびアクサフの王、

And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor heard thereof, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,

また北の山地、キンネロテの南のアラバ、平地、西の方のドルの高地におる王たち、

and to the kings that were on the north, in the hill-country, and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west,

すなわち、東西のカナンびと、アモリびと、ヘテびと、ペリジびと、山地のエブスびと、ミヅパの地にあるヘルモンのふもとのヒビびとに使者をつかわした。

to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill-country, and the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

そして彼らは、そのすべての軍勢を率いて出てきた。その大軍は浜べの砂のように数多く、馬と戦車も、ひじょうに多かった。

And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea-shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.

これらの王たちはみな軍を集め、進んできて、共にメロムの水のほとりに陣をしき、イスラエルと戦おうとした。

And all these kings met together; and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel.

その時、主はヨシュアに言われた、「彼らのゆえに恐れてはならない。あすの今ごろ、わたしは彼らを皆イスラエルに渡して、ことごとく殺させるであろう。あなたは彼らの馬の足の筋を切り、戦車を火で焼かなければならない」。

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them; for to-morrow at this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hock their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.

そこでヨシュアは、すべてのいくさびとを率いて、にわかにメロムの水のほとりにおし寄せ、彼らを襲った。

So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly, and fell upon them.

主は彼らをイスラエルの手に渡されたので、これを撃ち破り、大シドンおよびミスレポテ・マイムまで、これを追撃し、東の方では、ミヅパの谷まで彼らを追い、ついにひとりも残さず撃ちとった。

And Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they smote them, and chased them unto great Sidon, and unto Misrephoth-maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.

ヨシュアは主が命じられたとおりに彼らに行い、彼らの馬の足の筋を切り、戦車を火で焼いた。

And Joshua did unto them as Jehovah bade him: he hocked their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

その時、ヨシュアはひきかえして、ハゾルを取り、つるぎをもって、その王を撃った。ハゾルは昔、これらすべての国々の盟主であったからである。

And Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.

彼らはつるぎをもって、その中のすべての人を撃ち、ことごとくそれを滅ぼし、息のあるものは、ひとりも残さなかった。そして火をもってハゾルを焼いた。

And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them; there was none left that breathed: and he burnt Hazor with fire.

ヨシュアはこれらの王たちのすべての町々、およびその諸王を取り、つるぎをもって、これを撃ち、ことごとく滅ぼした。主のしもべモーセが命じたとおりであった。

And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and he smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; as Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded.

ただし、丘の上に立っている町々をイスラエルは焼かなかった。ヨシュアはただハゾルだけを焼いた。

But as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.

これらの町のすべてのぶんどり物と家畜とは、イスラエルの人々が戦利品として取ったが、人はみなつるぎをもって、滅ぼし尽し、息のあるものは、ひとりも残さなかった。

And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any that breathed.

主がそのしもべモーセに命じられたように、モーセはヨシュアに命じたが、ヨシュアはそのとおりにおこなった。すべて主がモーセに命じられたことで、ヨシュアが行わなかったことは一つもなかった。

As Jehovah commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua: and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that Jehovah commanded Moses.

こうしてヨシュアはその全地、すなわち、山地、ネゲブの全地、ゴセンの全地、平地、アラバならびにイスラエルの山地と平地を取り、

So Joshua took all that land, the hill-country, and all the South, and all the land of Goshen, and the lowland, and the Arabah, and the hill-country of Israel, and the lowland of the same;

セイルへ上って行く道のハラク山から、ヘルモン山のふもとのレバノンの谷にあるバアルガデまでを獲た。そしてそれらの王たちを、ことごとく捕えて、撃ち殺した。

from mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and put them to death.

ヨシュアはこれらすべての王たちと、長いあいだ戦った。

Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.

ギベオンの住民ヒビびとのほかには、イスラエルの人々と和を講じた町は一つもなかった。町々はみな戦争をして、攻め取ったものであった。

There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: they took all in battle.

彼らが心をかたくなにして、イスラエルに攻めよせたのは、もともと主がそうさせられたので、彼らがのろわれた者となり、あわれみを受けず、ことごとく滅ぼされるためであった。主がモーセに命じられたとおりである。

For it was of Jehovah to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might have no favor, but that he might destroy them, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

その時、ヨシュアはまた行って、山地、ヘブロン、デビル、アナブ、ユダのすべての山地、イスラエルのすべての山地から、アナクびとを断ち、彼らの町々をも共に滅ぼした。

And Joshua came at that time, and cut off the Anakim from the hill-country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill-country of Judah, and from all the hill-country of Israel: Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.

それでイスラエルの人々の地に、アナクびとは、ひとりもいなくなった。ただガサ、ガテ、アシドドには、少し残っているだけであった。

There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, did some remain.

こうしてヨシュアはその地を、ことごとく取った。すべて主がモーセに告げられたとおりである。そしてヨシュアはイスラエルの部族にそれぞれの分を与えて、嗣業とさせた。こうしてその地に戦争はやんだ。

So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Jehovah spake unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land had rest from war.

第12章

さてヨルダンの向こう側、日の出の方で、アルノンの谷からヘルモン山まで、および東アラバの全土のうちで、イスラエルの人々が撃ち滅ぼして地を取った国の王たちは、次のとおりである。

Now these are the kings of the land, whom the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising, from the valley of the Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the Arabah eastward:

まず、アモリびとの王シホン。彼はヘシボンに住み、その領地は、アルノンの谷のほとりにあるアロエル、および谷の中の町から、ギレアデの半ばを占めて、アンモンびととの境であるヤボク川に達し、

Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and [the city that is in] the middle of the valley, and half Gilead, even unto the river Jabbok, the border of the children of Ammon;

東の方ではアラバをキンネレテの湖まで占め、またアラバの海すなわち塩の海の東におよび、ベテエシモテの道を経て、南はピスガの山のふもとに達した。

and the Arabah unto the sea of Chinneroth, eastward, and unto the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, eastward, the way to Beth-jeshimoth; and on the south, under the slopes of Pisgah:

次にレパイムの生き残りのひとりであったバシャンの王オグ。彼はアシタロテとエデレイとに住み、

and the border of Og king of Bashan, of the remnant of the Rephaim, who dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,

ヘルモン山、サレカ、およびバシャンの全土を領したので、ゲシュルびと、およびマアカびとと境を接し、またギレアデの半ばを領したので、ヘシボンの王シホンと境を接していた。

and ruled in mount Hermon, and in Salecah, and in all Bashan, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.

主のしもべモーセと、イスラエルの人々とが、彼らを撃ち滅ぼし、そして主のしもべモーセは、これらの地を、ルベンびと、ガドびと、およびマナセの半部族に与えて所有とさせた。

Moses the servant of Jehovah and the children of Israel smote them: and Moses the servant of Jehovah gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

ヨルダンのこちら側、西の方にあって、レバノンの谷にあるバアルガデから、セイルへ上って行く道のハラク山までの間で、ヨシュアと、イスラエルの人々とが、撃ち滅ぼした国の王たちは、次のとおりである。ヨシュアは彼らの地をイスラエルの部族に、それぞれの分を与えて嗣業とさせた。

And these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the children of Israel smote beyond the Jordan westward, from Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon even unto mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir; and Joshua gave it unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;

これは、山地、平地、アラバ、山腹、荒野、およびネゲブであって、ヘテびと、アモリびと、カナンびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとの所領であった。

in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and in the Arabah, and in the slopes, and in the wilderness, and in the South; the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:

エリコの王ひとり。ベテルのほとりのアイの王ひとり。

the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;

エルサレムの王ひとり。ヘブロンの王ひとり。

the king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;

ヤルムテの王ひとり。ラキシの王ひとり。

the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;

エグロンの王ひとり。ゲゼルの王ひとり。

the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;

デビルの王ひとり。ゲデルの王ひとり。

the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;

ホルマの王ひとり。アラデの王ひとり。

the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one;

リブナの王ひとり。アドラムの王ひとり。

the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;

the king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;

the king of Shimron-meron, one; the king of Achshaph, one;

the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one;

ケデシの王ひとり。カルメルのヨクネアムの王ひとり。

the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one;

ドルの高地におるドルの王ひとり。ガリラヤのゴイイムの王ひとり。

the king of Dor in the height of Dor, one; the king of Goiim in Gilgal, one;

テルザの王ひとり。合わせて三十一王である。

the king of Tirzah, one: all the kings thirty and one.

第13章

さてヨシュアは年が進んで老いたが、主は彼に言われた、「あなたは年が進んで老いたが、取るべき地は、なお多く残っている。

Now Joshua was old and well stricken in years; and Jehovah said unto him, Thou art old and well stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

その残っている地は、次のとおりである。ペリシテびとの全地域、ゲシュルびとの全土、

This is the land that yet remaineth: all the regions of the Philistines, and all the Geshurites;

エジプトの東のシホルから北にのびて、カナンびとに属するといわれるエクロンの境までの地、ペリシテびとの五人の君たちの地、すなわち、ガザ、アシドド、アシケロン、ガテ、およびエクロン。

from the Shihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the border of Ekron northward, [which] is reckoned to the Canaanites; the five lords of the Philistines; the Gazites, and the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avvim,

南のアビびとの地、カナンびとの全地、シドンびとに属するメアラからアモリびとの境にあるアペクまでの部分。

on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongeth to the Sidonians, unto Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;

またヘルモン山のふもとのバアルガデからハマテの入口に至るゲバルびとの地、およびレバノンの東の全土。

and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baal-gad under mount Hermon unto the entrance of Hamath;

レバノンからミスレポテ・マイムまでの山地のすべての民、すなわちシドンびとの全土。わたしはみずから彼らをイスラエルの人々の前から追い払うであろう。わたしが命じたように、あなたはその地をイスラエルに分け与えて、嗣業とさせなければならない。

all the inhabitants of the hill-country from Lebanon unto Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians; them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only allot thou it unto Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

すなわち、その地を九つの部族と、マナセの半部族とに分け与えて、嗣業とさせなければならない」。

Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

マナセの他の半部族と共に、ルベンびとと、ガドびととは、ヨルダンの向こう側、東の方で、その嗣業をモーセから受けた。主のしもべモーセが、彼らに与えたのは、

With him the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of Jehovah gave them:

アルノンの谷のほとりにあるアロエル、および谷の中にある町から、デボンとメデバの間にある高原のすべての地。

from Aroer, that is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;

ヘシボンで世を治めた、アモリびとの王シホンのすべての町々を含めて、アンモンの人々の境までの地。

and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon;

ギレアデと、ゲシュルびと、ならびにマアカびとの領地、ヘルモン山の全土、サルカまでのバシャン全体。

and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salecah;

アシタロテとエデレイで世を治めたバシャンの王オグの全国。オグはレパイムの生き残りであった。モーセはこれらを撃って、追い払った。

all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (the same was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); for these did Moses smite, and drove them out.

ただし、イスラエルの人々は、ゲシュルびとと、マアカびとを追い払わなかった。ゲシュルびとと、マアカびとは、今日までイスラエルのうちに住んでいる。

Nevertheless the children of Israel drove not out the Geshurites, nor the Maacathites: but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel unto this day.

ただレビの部族には、ヨシュアはなんの嗣業をも与えなかった。イスラエルの神、主の火祭が彼らの嗣業であるからである。主がヨシュアに言われたとおりである。

Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance; the offerings of Jehovah, the God of Israel, made by fire are his inheritance, as he spake unto him.

モーセはルベンびとの部族に、その家族にしたがって嗣業を与えたが、

And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their families.

その領域はアルノンの谷のほとりにあるアロエル、および谷の中にある町からメデバのほとりのすべての高原、

And their border was from Aroer, that is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain by Medeba;

ヘシボンおよびその高原のすべての町々、デボン、バモテ・バアル、ベテ・バアル・メオン、

Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon,

ヤハヅ、ケデモテ、メパアテ、

and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath,

キリアタイム、シブマ、谷の中の山にあるゼレテ・シャハル、

and Kiriathaim, and Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar in the mount of the valley,

ベテペオル、ピスガの山腹、ベテエシモテ、

and Beth-peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth,

すなわち高原のすべての町々と、ヘシボンで世を治めたアモリびとの王シホンの全国に及んだ。モーセはシホンを、ミデアンのつかさたちエビ、レケム、ツル、ホルおよびレバと共に撃ち殺した。これらはみなシホンの諸侯であって、その地に住んでいた者である。

and all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, that dwelt in the land.

イスラエルの人々はまたベオルの子、占い師バラムをもつるぎにかけて、そのほかに殺した者どもと共に殺した。

Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among the rest of their slain.

ルベンびとの領域はヨルダンを境とした。これはルベンびとが、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業であって、その町々と村々とを含む。

And the border of the children of Reuben was the Jordan, and the border [thereof]. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

モーセはまたガドの部族、ガドの子孫にも、その家族にしたがって、嗣業を与えたが、

And Moses gave unto the tribe of Gad, unto the children of Gad, according to their families.

And their border was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;

ヘシボンからラマテ・ミゾパまでの地、およびベトニム、マハナイムからデビルの境までの地。

and from Heshbon unto Ramath-mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir;

谷の中ではベテハラム、ベテニムラ、スコテ、およびザポンなど、ヘシボンの王シホンの国の残りの部分。ヨルダンを境として、ヨルダンの東側、キンネレテの湖の南の端までの地。

and in the valley, Beth-haram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan and the border [thereof], unto the uttermost part of the sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan eastward.

これはガドびとが、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業であって、その町々と村々とを含む。

This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

モーセはまたマナセの半部族にも、嗣業を与えたが、それはマナセの半部族が、その家族にしたがって与えられたものである。

And Moses gave [inheritance] unto the half-tribe of Manasseh: and it was for the half-tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families.

その領域はマハナイムからバシャンの全土に及び、バシャンの王オグの全国、バシャンにあるヤイルのすべての町々、すなわちその六十の町。

And their border was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:

またギレアデの半ば、バシャンのオグの国の町であるアシタロテとエデレイ。これらはマナセの子マキルの子孫に与えられた。すなわちマキルの子孫の半ばが、その家族にしたがって、それを獲た。

and half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even for the half of the children of Machir according to their families.

これらはヨルダンの向こう側、エリコの東のモアブの平野で、モーセが分け与えた嗣業である。

These are the inheritances which Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho, eastward.

ただし、レビの部族には、モーセはなんの嗣業をも与えなかった。イスラエルの神、主がその嗣業だからである。主がモーセに言われたとおりである。

But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance: Jehovah, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he spake unto them.

第14章

イスラエルの人々が、カナンの地で受けた嗣業の地は、次のとおりである。すなわち、祭司エレアザル、ヌンの子ヨシュア、およびイスラエルの人々の部族の首長たちが、これを彼らに分かち、

And these are the inheritances which the children of Israel took in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers` [houses] of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed unto them,

主がモーセによって命じられたように、くじによって、これを九つの部族と、半ばの部族とに、嗣業として与えた。

by the lot of their inheritance, as Jehovah commanded by Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half-tribe.

これはヨルダンの向こう側で、モーセがすでに他の二つの部族と、半ばの部族とに、嗣業を与えていたからである。ただしレビびとには、彼らの中で嗣業を与えず、

For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.

ヨセフの子孫が、マナセと、エフライムの二つの部族となったからである。レビびとには土地の分け前を与えず、ただ、その住むべき町々および、家畜と持ち物とを置くための放牧地を与えたばかりであった。

For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: and they gave no portion unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for their cattle and for their substance.

イスラエルの人々は、主がモーセに命じられたようにおこなって、その地を分けた。

As Jehovah commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did; and they divided the land.

時に、ユダの人々がギルガルのヨシュアの所にきて、ケニズびとエフンネの子カレブが、ヨシュアに言った、「主がカデシ・バルネアで、あなたとわたしとについて、神の人モーセに言われたことを、あなたはごぞんじです。

Then the children of Judah drew nigh unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that Jehovah spake unto Moses the man of God concerning me and concerning thee in Kadesh-barnea.

主のしもべモーセが、この地を探るために、わたしをカデシ・バルネアからつかわした時、わたしは四十歳でした。そしてわたしは、自分の信ずるところを復命しました。

Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of Jehovah sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in my heart.

しかし、共に上って行った兄弟たちは、民の心をくじいてしまいましたが、わたしは全くわが神、主に従いました。

Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed Jehovah my God.

その日モーセは誓って、言いました、『おまえの足で踏んだ地は、かならず長くおまえと子孫との嗣業となるであろう。おまえが全くわが神、主に従ったからである』。

And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy foot hath trodden shall be an inheritance to thee and to thy children for ever, because thou hast wholly followed Jehovah my God.

主がこの言葉をモーセに語られた時からこのかた、イスラエルが荒野に歩んだ四十五年の間、主は言われたように、わたしを生きながらえさせてくださいました。わたしは今日すでに八十五歳ですが、

And now, behold, Jehovah hath kept me alive, as he spake, these forty and five years, from the time that Jehovah spake this word unto Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

今もなお、モーセがわたしをつかわした日のように、健やかです。わたしの今の力は、あの時の力に劣らず、どんな働きにも、戦いにも堪えることができます。

As yet I am as strong this day as I as in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, and to go out and to come in.

それで主があの日語られたこの山地を、どうか今、わたしにください。あの日あなたも聞いたように、そこにはアナキびとがいて、その町々は大きく堅固です。しかし、主がわたしと共におられて、わたしはついには、主が言われたように、彼らを追い払うことができるでしょう」。

Now therefore give me this hill-country, whereof Jehovah spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakim were there, and cities great and fortified: it may be that Jehovah will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as Jehovah spake.

そこでヨシュアはエフンネの子カレブを祝福し、ヘブロンを彼に与えて嗣業とさせた。

And Joshua blessed him; and he gave Hebron unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.

こうしてヘブロンは、ケニズびとエフンネの子カレブの嗣業となって、今日に至っている。彼が全くイスラエルの神、主に従ったからである。

Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite unto this day; because that he wholly followed Jehovah, the God of Israel.

ヘブロンの名は、もとはキリアテ・アルバといった。アルバは、アナキびとのうちの、最も大いなる人であった。こうしてこの地に戦争はやんだ。

Now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba; [which Arba was] the greatest man among the Anakim. And the land had rest from war.

第15章

ユダの人々の部族が、その家族にしたがって、くじで獲た地は、南の方では、エドムの境に達し、南のはてにあるチンの荒野に及んでいた。

And the lot for the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families was unto the border of Edom, even to the wilderness of Zin southward, at the uttermost part of the south.

その南の境は、塩の海の南の端の、入海から起り、

And their south border was from the uttermost part of the Salt Sea, from the bay that looketh southward;

アクラビムの坂の南に出てチンに進み、カデシ・バルネアの南から上って、ヘヅロンに進み、アダルに上っていって、カルカに回り、

and it went out southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and went up by the south of Kadesh-barnea, and passed along by Hezron, and went up to Addar, and turned about to Karka;

アヅモンに進んで、エジプトの川に達し、その境は海に至って尽きる。これが彼らの南の境である。

and it passed along to Azmon, and went out at the brook of Egypt; and the goings out of the border were at the sea: this shall be your south border.

東の境は塩の海であって、ヨルダンの川口に達する。北の方の境は、ヨルダンの川口の、入海から起り、

And the east border was the Salt Sea, even unto the end of the Jordan. And the border of the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the end of the Jordan;

上ってベテホグラに行き、ベテアラバの北を過ぎ、上ってルベンびとボハンの石に達し、

and the border went up to Beth-hoglah, and passed along by the north of Beth-arabah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben;

またアコルの谷からデビルに上って、北におもむき、川の南にあるアドミムの坂に対するギルガルに向かって進み、エンシメシの水に達し、エンロゲルに至って尽きる。

and the border went up to Debir from the valley of Achor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is over against the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the river; and the border passed along to the waters of En-shemesh, and the goings out thereof were at En-rogel;

またその境はベンヒンノムの谷に沿って、エブスびとの地、すなわちエルサレムの南のわきに上り、ヒンノムの谷の西にある山の頂に上る。これはレパイムの谷の北の果にあるものである。

and the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the side of the Jebusite southward (the same is Jerusalem); and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the uttermost part of the vale of Rephaim northward;

その境は、この山の頂からネフトアの水の源に至り、その所からエフロン山の町々に及び、その境は曲ってバアラに達する。これは、すなわちキリアテ・ヤリムである。

and the border extended from the top of the mountain unto the fountain of the waters of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of mount Ephron; and the border extended to Baalah (the same is Kiriath-jearim);

その境は、バアラから西に回って、セイル山に及び、ヤリム山、すなわちケサロンの北のわきを経て、ベテシメシに下り、テムナに進み、

and the border turned about from Baalah westward unto mount Seir, and passed along unto the side of mount Jearim on the north (the same is Chesalon), and went down to Beth-shemesh, and passed along by Timnah;

エクロンの北の丘のわきに出て、シッケロンに曲り、バアラ山に進み、ヤブネルに達し、海に至って尽きる。

and the border went out unto the side of Ekron northward; and the border extended to Shikkeron, and passed along to mount Baalah, and went out at Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the sea.

また西の境は大海であって、海岸を境とした。これがユダの人々の、その家族にしたがって獲た地の四方の境である。

And the west border was to the great sea, and the border [thereof]. This is the border of the children of Judah round about according to their families.

ヨシュアは、主に命じられたように、エフンネの子カレブに、ユダの人々のうちで、キリアテ・アルバ、すなわちヘブロンを与えて、その分とさせた。アルバはアナクの父であった。

And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a portion among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of Jehovah to Joshua, even Kiriath-arba, [which Arba was] the father of Anak (the same is Hebron).

カレブはその所から、アナクの子三人を追い払った。すなわち、セシャイ、アヒマン、およびタルマイであって、アナクから出たものである。

And Caleb drove out thence the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.

そして彼はこの所からデビルに住む民の所に攻め上った。デビルの名は、もとはキリアテ・セペルといった。

And he went up thence against the inhabitants of Debir: now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.

カレブは言った、「キリアテ・セペルを撃って、これを取る者には、わたしの娘アクサを妻として与えるであろう」。

And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

ケナズの子で、カレブの弟オテニエルがそれを取ったので、カレブは娘アクサを、妻として彼に与えた。

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

彼女がとつぐ時、畑を父に求めるようにと、オテニエルに勧められた。そして彼女が、ろばから降りたので、カレブは彼女に、何を望むのかとたずねた。

And it came to pass, when she came [unto him], that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said, What wouldest thou?

彼女は答えて言った、「わたしに贈り物をください。あなたはネゲブの地に、わたしをやられるのですから、泉をもください」。カレブは彼女に上の泉と下の泉とを与えた。

And she said, Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families.

ユダの人々の部族が、南でエドムの境の方にもっていた遠くの町々は、カブジエル、エデル、ヤグル、

And the uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of Judah toward the border of Edom in the South were Kabzeel, and Eder, and Jagur,

キナ、デモナ、アダダ、

and Kinah, and Dimonah, and Adadah,

ケデシ、ハゾル、イテナン、

and Kedesh, and Hazor, and Ithnan,

ジフ、テレム、ベアロテ、

Ziph, and Telem, and Bealoth,

ハゾル・ハダッタ、ケリオテ・ヘヅロンすなわちハゾル、

and Hazor-hadattah, and Kerioth-hezron (the same is Hazor),

アマム、シマ、モラダ、

Amam, and Shema, and Moladah,

ハザルガダ、ヘシモン、ベテペレテ、

and Hazar-gaddah, and Heshmon, and Beth-pelet,

ハザル・シュアル、ベエルシバ、ビジョテヤ、

and Hazar-shual, and Beer-sheba, and Biziothiah,

Baalah, and Iim, and Ezem,

エルトラデ、ケシル、ホルマ、

and Eltolad, and Chesil, and Hormah,

and Zanoah, and En-gannim, Tappuah, and Enam,

ヤルムテ、アドラム、ソコ、アゼカ、

Jarmuth, and Adullam, Socoh, and Azekah,

シャアライム、アデタイム、ゲデラ、ゲデロタイム。すなわち十四の町々と、それに属する村々。

and Shaaraim, and Adithaim, and Gederah, and Gederothaim; fourteen cities with their villages.

ゼナン、ハダシャ、ミグダルガデ、

Zenan, and Hadashah, and Migdal-gad,

デラン、ミヅパ、ヨクテル、

and Dilean, and Mizpeh, and Joktheel,

ラキシ、ボヅカテ、エグロン、

Lachish, and Bozkath, and Eglon,

カボン、ラマム、キテリシ、

and Cabbon, and Lahmam, and Chitlish,

ゲデロテ、ベテダゴン、ナアマ、マッケダ。すなわち十六の町々と、それに属する村々。

and Gederoth, Beth-dagon, and Naamah, and Makkedah; sixteen cities with their villages.

またリブナ、エテル、アシャン、

Libnah, and Ether, and Ashan,

イフタ、アシナ、ネジブ、

and Iphtah, and Ashnah, and Nezib,

ケイラ、アクジブ、マレシャ。すなわち九つの町々と、それに属する村々。

and Keilah, and Achzib, and Mareshah; nine cities with their villages.

エクロンと、その町々、および村々。

Ekron, with its towns and its villages;

エクロンから海まで、すべてアシドドのほとりにある町々、およびそれに属する村々。

from Ekron even unto the sea, all that were by the side of Ashdod, with their villages.

アシドドとその町々および村々。ガザとその町々および村々。エジプトの川と大海の海岸までが、その境であった。

Ashdod, its towns and its villages; Gaza, its towns and its villages; unto the brook of Egypt, and the great sea, and the border [thereof].

山地では、シャミル、ヤッテル、ソコ、

And in the hill-country, Shamir, and Jattir, and Socoh,

ダンナ、キリアテ・サンナすなわちデビル、

and Dannah, and Kiriath-sannah (the same is Debir),

アナブ、エシテモ、アニム、

and Anab, and Eshtemoh, and Anim,

ゴセン、ホロン、ギロ。すなわち十一の町々と、それに属する村々。

and Goshen, and Holon, and Giloh; eleven cities with their villages.

アラブ、ドマ、エシャン、

Arab, and Dumah, and Eshan,

ヤニム、ベテタップア、アペカ、

and Janim, and Beth-tappuah, and Aphekah,

ホムタ、キリアテ・アルバすなわちヘブロン、ヂオル。すなわち九つの町々と、それに属する村々。

and Humtah, and Kiriath-arba (the same is Hebron), and Zior; nine cities with their villages.

マオン、カルメル、ジフ、ユッタ、

Maon, Carmel, and Ziph, and Jutah,

エズレル、ヨクデアム、ザノア、

and Jezreel, and Jokdeam, and Zanoah,

カイン、ギベア、テムナ。すなわち十の町々と、それに属する村々。

Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah; ten cities with their villages.

ハルホル、ベテズル、ゲドル、

Halhul, Beth-zur, and Gedor,

マアラテ、ベテアノテ、エルテコン。すなわち六つの町々と、それに属する村々。

and Maarath, and Beth-anoth, and Eltekon; six cities with their villages.

キリアテ・バアルすなわちキリアテ・ヤリム、ラバ。これらの二つの町とそれに属する村々。

Kiriath-baal (the same is Kiriath-jearim), and Rabbah; two cities with their villages.

荒野では、ベテアラバ、ミデン、セカカ、

In the wilderness, Beth-arabah, Middin, and Secacah,

ニブシャン、塩の町、エンゲデ。すなわち六つの町々と、それに属する村々。

and Nibshan, and the City of Salt, and En-gedi; six cities with their villages.

しかし、ユダの人々は、エルサレムの住民エブスびとを追い払うことができなかった。それでエブスびとは今日まで、ユダの人々と共にエルサレムに住んでいる。

And as for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.

第16章

ヨセフの子孫が、くじによって獲た地の境は、エリコのほとりのヨルダン、すなわちエリコの水の東から起って、荒野に延び、エリコから山地に上っている荒野を経て、ベテルに至り、

And the lot came out for the children of Joseph from the Jordan at Jericho, at the waters of Jericho on the east, even the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill-country to Beth-el;

ベテルからルズにおもむき、アルキびとの領地であるアタロテに進み、

and it went out from Beth-el to Luz, and passed along unto the border of the Archites to Ataroth;

西に下ってヤフレテびとの領地に達し、下ベテホロンの地域に及び、ゲゼルに達し、海に至って尽きる。

and it went down westward to the border of the Japhletites, unto the border of Beth-horon the nether, even unto Gezer; and the goings out thereof were at the sea.

こうしてヨセフの子孫のマナセと、エフライムとは、その嗣業を受けた。

And the children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their inheritance.

エフライムの子孫が、その家族にしたがって獲た地の境は、次のとおりである。彼らの嗣業の東の境は、アタロテ・アダルであって、上ベテホロンに達し、

And the border of the children of Ephraim according to their families was [thus]: the border of their inheritance eastward was Ataroth-addar, unto Beth-horon the upper;

その境は、その所から海に及ぶ。北にはミクメタテがあり、東ではその境はタアナテシロで曲り、進んでヤノアの東に至り、

and the border went out westward at Michmethath on the north; and the border turned about eastward unto Taanath-shiloh, and passed along it on the east of Janoah;

ヤノアからアタロテとナアラに下り、エリコに達し、ヨルダンに至って尽きる。

and it went down from Janoah to Ataroth, and to Naarah, and reached unto Jericho, and went out at the Jordan.

タップアからその境は西に進んで、カナの川に達し、海に至って尽きる。これはエフライムの子孫の部族が、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業である。

From Tappuah the border went along westward to the brook of Kanah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim according to their families;

このほかにマナセの子孫の嗣業のうちにも、エフライムの子孫のために分け与えられた町々があって、そのすべての町々と、それに属する村々を獲た。

together with the cities which were set apart for the children of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.

ただし、ゲゼルに住むカナンびとを、追い払わなかったので、カナンびとは今日までエフライムの中に住み、奴隷となって追い使われている。

And they drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer: but the Canaanites dwell in the midst of Ephraim unto this day, and are become servants to do taskwork.

第17章

マナセの部族が、くじによって獲た地は、次のとおりである。マナセはヨセフの長子であった。マナセの長子で、ギレアデの父であるマキルは、軍人であったので、ギレアデとバシャンを獲た。

And [this] was the lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the first-born of Joseph. As for Machir the first-born of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.

マナセの部族の他のものにも、その家族にしたがって、地を与えたが、それは、アビエゼル、ヘレク、アスリエル、シケム、ヘペル、セミダで、これらはヨセフの子マナセの男の子孫であって、その家族にしたがって、あげたものである。

So [the lot] was for the rest of the children of Manasseh according to their families: for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families.

しかし、マナセの子マキル、その子ギレアデ、その子ヘペル、その子であったゼロペハデには、女の子だけで、男の子がなかった。女の子たちの名は、マヘラ、ノア、ホグラ、ミルカ、テルザといった。

But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

彼女たちは、祭司エレアザル、ヌンの子ヨシュアおよび、つかさたちの前に進み出て、「わたしたちの兄弟と同じように、わたしたちにも、嗣業を与えよと、主はモーセに命じおきになりました」と言ったので、ヨシュアは主の命にしたがって、彼らの父の兄弟たちと同じように、彼女たちにも嗣業を与えた。

And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, Jehovah commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren: therefore according to the commandment of Jehovah he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.

こうしてマナセはヨルダンの向こう側で、ギレアデとバシャンの地のほかに、なお十の部分を獲た。

And there fell ten parts to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan;

マナセの娘たちが、男の子らと共に、嗣業を獲たからである。ギレアデの地は、そのほかのマナセの子孫に分け与えられた。

because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons. And the land of Gilead belonged unto the rest of the sons of Manasseh.

マナセの獲た地の境は、アセルからシケムの東のミクメタテに及び、その境は南に延びて、エンタップアの住民に達する。

And the border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, which is before Shechem; and the border went along to the right hand, unto the inhabitants of En-tappuah.

タップアの地はマナセに属していたが、マナセの境にあるタップアの町は、エフライムの子孫に属していた。

The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh; but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim.

またその境はカナの川に下って、川の南に至る。そこの町々はマナセの町々の中にあって、エフライムに属した。マナセの境は、川の北に沿って進み、海に達して尽きる。

And the border went down unto the brook of Kanah, southward of the brook: these cities belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh: and the border of Manasseh was on the north side of the brook, and the goings out thereof were at the sea:

その川の南の地は、エフライムに属し、北はマナセに属する。海がその境となる。マナセは北はアセルに接し、東はイッサカルに接する。

southward it was Ephraim`s, and northward it was Manasseh`s, and the sea was his border; and they reached to Asher on the north, and to Issachar on the east.

マナセはまたイッサカルとアセルの中に、ベテシャンとその村々、イブレアムとその村々、ドルの住民とその村々、エンドルの住民とその村々、タアナクの住民とその村々、メギドの住民とその村々を獲た。このうち第三のものは高地である。

And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of En-dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, even the three heights.

しかし、マナセの子孫は、これらの町々を取ることができなかったので、カナンびとは長くこの地に住み続けようとした。

Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out [the inhabitants of] those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

しかし、イスラエルの人々が強くなるにしたがって、カナンびとを使役するようになり、ことごとく追い払うことはしなかった。

And it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxed strong, that they put the Canaanites to taskwork, and did not utterly drive them out.

ヨセフの子孫はヨシュアに言った、「主が今まで、わたしを祝福されたので、わたしは数の多い民となったのに、あなたはなぜ、わたしの嗣業として、ただ一つのくじ、一つの分だけを、くださったのですか」。

And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one part for an inheritance, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as hitherto Jehovah hath blessed me?

ヨシュアは彼らに言った、「もしあなたが数の多い民ならば、林に上っていって、そこで、ペリジびとやレパイムびとの地を自分で切り開くがよい。エフライムの山地が、あなたがたには狭いのだから」。

And Joshua said unto them, If thou be a great people, get thee up to the forest, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim; since the hill-country of Ephraim is too narrow for thee.

ヨセフの子孫は答えた、「山地はわたしどもに十分ではありません。かつまた平地におるカナンびとは、ベテシャンとその村々におるものも、エズレルの谷におるものも、みな鉄の戦車を持っています」。

And the children of Joseph said, The hill-country is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are in Beth-shean and its towns, and they who are in the valley of Jezreel.

ヨシュアはまたヨセフの家、すなわちエフライムとマナセに言った、「あなたは数の多い民で、大きな力をもっています。それでただ一つのくじでは足りません。

And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power; thou shalt not have one lot only:

山地をもあなたのものとしなければなりません。それは林ではあるが、切り開いて、向こうの端まで、自分のものとしなければなりません。カナンびとは鉄の戦車があって、強くはあるが、あなたはそれを追い払うことができます」。

but the hill-country shall be thine; for though it is a forest, thou shalt cut it down, and the goings out thereof shall be thine; for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong.

第18章

そこでイスラエルの人々の全会衆は、その地を征服したので、シロに集まり、そこに会見の幕屋を立てた。

And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled themselves together at Shiloh, and set up the tent of meeting there: and the land was subdued before them.

その時、イスラエルの人々のうちに、まだ嗣業を分かち取らない部族が、七つ残っていたので、

And there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes, which had not yet divided their inheritance.

ヨシュアはイスラエルの人々に言った、「あなたがたは、先祖の神、主が、あなたがたに与えられた地を取りに行くのを、いつまで怠っているのですか。

And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, How long are ye slack to go in to possess the land, which Jehovah, the God of your fathers, hath given you?

部族ごとに三人ずつを出しなさい。わたしはその人々をつかわしましょう。彼らは立っていって、その地を行き巡り、おのおのの嗣業のために、それを図面にして、わたしのところへ持ってこなければならない。

Appoint for you three men of each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall arise, and walk through the land, and describe it according to their inheritance; and they shall come unto me.

彼らはその地を七つの部分に分けなければならない。ユダは南のその領地にとどまり、ヨセフの家は北のその領地にとどまらなければならない。

And they shall divide it into seven portions: Judah shall abide in his border on the south, and the house of Joseph shall abide in their border on the north.

あなたがたは、その地を七つに分けて、図面にし、それをここに、わたしのところへ持ってこなければならない。わたしはここで、われわれの神、主の前に、あなたがたのために、くじを引くであろう。

And ye shall describe the land into seven portions, and bring [the description] hither to me; and I will cast lots for you here before Jehovah our God.

レビびとは、あなたがたのうちに何の分をも持たない。主の祭司たることが、彼らの嗣業だからである。またガドとルベンとマナセの半部族とは、ヨルダンの向こう側、東の方で、すでにその嗣業を受けた。それは主のしもべモーセが、彼らに与えたものである」。

For the Levites have no portion among you; for the priesthood of Jehovah is their inheritance: and Gad and Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan eastward, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave them.

そこでその人々は立って行った。その地の図面を作るために出て行く人々に、ヨシュアは命じて言った、「あなたがたは行って、その地を行き巡り、それを図面にして、わたしのところに持って帰りなさい。わたしはシロで、主の前に、あなたがたのために、ここでくじを引きましょう」。

And the men arose, and went: and Joshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come again to me; and I will cast lots for you here before Jehovah in Shiloh.

こうしてその人々は行って、その地を経めぐり、町々にしたがって、それを七つの部分とし、図面にして、書物に書きしるし、シロの宿営におるヨシュアのもとへ持ってきた。

And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven portions in a book; and they came to Joshua unto the camp at Shiloh.

ヨシュアはシロで、彼らのために主の前に、くじを引いた。そしてヨシュアはその所で、イスラエルの人々に、それぞれの分として、地を分け与えた。

And Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before Jehovah: and there Joshua divided the land unto the children of Israel according to their divisions.

まずベニヤミンの子孫の部族のために、その家族にしたがって、くじを引いた。そしてそのくじによって獲た領地は、ユダの子孫と、ヨセフの子孫との間にあった。

And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families: and the border of their lot went out between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.

すなわち、その北の方の境は、ヨルダンに始まり、エリコの北のわきに上り、また西の方の山地をとおって上り、ベテアベンの荒野に達して尽きる。

And their border on the north quarter was from the Jordan; and the border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the hill-country westward; and the goings out thereof were at the wilderness of Beth-aven.

そこから、その境はルズに進み、ルズの南のわきに至る。ルズはベテルである。ついでその境は下ベテホロンの南の山にあるアタロテ・アダルに下り、

And the border passed along from thence to Luz, to the side of Luz (the same is Beth-el), southward; and the border went down to Ataroth-addar, by the mountain that lieth on the south of Beth-horon the nether.

西の方では、ベテホロンの南にある山から南に曲り、ユダの子孫の町キリアテ・バアルに至って尽きる。キリアテ・バアルはキリアテ・ヤリムである。これが西の方の境であった。

And the border extended [thence], and turned about on the west quarter southward, from the mountain that lieth before Beth-horon southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kiriath-baal (the same is Kiriath-jearim), a city of the children of Judah: this was the west quarter.

また南の方は、キリアテ・ヤリムの端に始まり、その境はそこからエフロンにおもむき、ネフトアの水の源に至り、

And the south quarter was from the uttermost part of Kiriath-jearim; and the border went out westward, and went out to the fountain of the waters of Nephtoah;

ついでその境は、レパイムの谷の北の端にあるベンヒンノムの谷を見おろす山の端に下り、進んでエブスびとのわきの南、ヒンノムの谷に下り、また下ってエンロゲルに至り、

and the border went down to the uttermost part of the mountain that lieth before the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is in the vale of Rephaim northward; and it went down to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of the Jebusite southward, and went down to En-rogel;

北に曲ってエンシメシにおもむき、アドミムの坂に対するゲリロテにおもむき、ルベンびとボハンの石に下り、

and it extended northward, and went out at En-shemesh, and went out to Geliloth, which is over against the ascent of Adummim; and it went down to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben;

ベテアラバのわきを北に進んで、アラバに下り、

and it passed along to the side over against the Arabah northward, and went down unto the Arabah;

その境は、ベテホグラの北のわきに進み、ヨルダンの南端で、塩の海の北の入海に至って尽きる。これが南の境である。

and the border passed along to the side of Beth-hoglah northward; and the goings out of the border were at the north bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan: this was the south border.

ヨルダンは東の方の境となっていた。これがベニヤミンの子孫の、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業の四方の境である。

And the Jordan was the border of it on the east quarter. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, by the borders thereof round about, according to their families.

ベニヤミンの子孫の部族が、その家族にしたがって獲た町々は、エリコ、ベテホグラ、エメクケジツ、

Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin according to their families were Jericho, and Beth-hoglah, and Emek-keziz,

ベテアラバ、ゼマライム、ベテル、

and Beth-arabah, and Zemaraim, and Beth-el,

アビム、パラ、オフラ、

and Avvim, and Parah, and Ophrah,

ケパル・アンモニ、オフニ、ゲバ。すなわち十二の町々と、それに属する村々。

and Chephar-ammoni, and Ophni, and Geba; twelve cities with their villages:

またギベオン、ラマ、ベエロテ、

Gibeon, and Ramah, and Beeroth,

ミヅパ、ケピラ、モザ、

and Mizpeh, and Chephirah, and Mozah,

レケム、イルピエル、タララ、

and Rekem, and Irpeel, and Taralah,

ゼラ、エレフ、エブスすなわちエルサレム、ギベア、キリアテ・ヤリム。すなわち十四の町々と、それに属する村々。これがベニヤミンの子孫の、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業である。

and Zelah, Eleph, and the Jebusite (the same is Jerusalem), Gibeath, [and] Kiriath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.

第19章

次にシメオンのため、すなわちシメオンの子孫の部族のために、その家族にしたがって、くじを引いた。その嗣業はユダの子孫の嗣業のうちにあった。

And the second lot came out for Simeon, even for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Judah.

その嗣業として獲たものは、ベエルシバ、すなわちシバ、モラダ、

And they had for their inheritance Beer-sheba, or Sheba, and Moladah,

ハザル・シュアル、バラ、エゼム、

and Hazar-shual, and Balah, and Ezem,

エルトラデ、ベトル、ホルマ、

and Eltolad, and Bethul, and Hormah,

チクラグ、ベテ・マルカボテ、ハザルスサ、

and Ziklag, and Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-susah,

ベテレバオテ、シャルヘン。すなわち十三の町々と、それに属する村々。

and Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities with their villages:

またアイン、リンモン、エテル、アシャン。すなわち四つの町々と、それに属する村々。

Ain, Rimmon, and Ether, and Ashan; four cities with their villages:

およびこれらの町の周囲にあって、バアラテ・ベエル、すなわちネゲブのラマに至るまでのすべての村々。これがシメオンの子孫の部族の、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業である。

and all the villages that were round about these cities to Baalath-beer, Ramah of the South. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families.

シメオンの子孫の嗣業は、ユダの子孫の領域のうちにあった。これはユダの子孫の分が大きかったので、シメオンの子孫が、その嗣業を彼らの嗣業の中に獲たからである。

Out of the part of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon; for the portion of the children of Judah was too much for them: therefore the children of Simeon had inheritance in the midst of their inheritance.

第三にゼブルンの子孫のために、その家族にしたがって、くじを引いた。その嗣業の領域はサリデに及び、

And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families; and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid;

その境は西に上って、マララに至り、ダバセテに達し、ヨクネアムの東にある川に達し、

and their border went up westward, even to Maralah, and reached to Dabbesheth; and it reached to the brook that is before Jokneam;

サリデから、東の方、日の出の方に曲り、キスロテ・タボルの境に至り、ダベラテに出て、ヤピアに上り、

and it turned from Sarid eastward toward the sunrising unto the border of Chisloth-tabor; and it went out to Daberath, and went up to Japhia;

そこから東の方、日の出の方に進んで、ガテヘペルとイッタ・カジンに至り、リンモンに進んで、ネアの方に曲る。

and from thence it passed along eastward to Gath-hepher, to Eth-kazin; and it went out at Rimmon which stretcheth unto Neah;

北ではその境はハンナトンに回り、イフタエルの谷に至って尽きる。

and the border turned about it on the north to Hannathon; and the goings out thereof were at the valley of Iphtah-el;

そしてカッタテ、ナハラル、シムロン、イダラ、ベツレヘムなど十二の町々と、それに属する村々があった。

and Kattath, and Nahalal, and Shimron, and Idalah, and Bethlehem: twelve cities with their villages.

これがゼブルンの子孫の、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業であって、その町々と、それに属する村々とである。

This is the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.

第四にイッサカル、すなわちイッサカルの子孫のために、その家族にしたがって、くじを引いた。

The fourth lot came out for Issachar, even for the children of Issachar according to their families.

その領域には、エズレル、ケスロテ、シュネム、

And their border was unto Jezreel, and Chesulloth, and Shunem,

ハパライム、シオン、アナハラテ、

and Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath,

ラビテ、キション、エベツ、

and Rabbith, and Kishion, and Ebez,

レメテ、エンガンニム、エンハダ、ベテパッゼズがあり、

and Remeth, and Engannim, and En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez,

その境はタボル、シャハヂマ、ベテシメシに達し、その境はヨルダンに至って尽きる。十六の町々と、それに属する村々があった。

and the border reached to Tabor, and Shahazumah, and Beth-shemesh; and the goings out of their border were at the Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages.

これがイッサカルの子孫の部族の、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業であって、その町々と、それに属する村々とである。

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities with their villages.

第五に、アセルの子孫の部族のために、その家族にしたがって、くじを引いた。

And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families.

その領域には、ヘルカテ、ハリ、ベテン、アクサフ、

And their border was Helkath, and Hali, and Beten, and Achshaph,

アランメレク、アマデ、ミシャルがあり、その境は西では、カルメルとシホル・リブナテに達し、

and Allammelech, and Amad, and Mishal; and it reached to Carmel westward, and to Shihor-libnath;

それから東に折れて、ベテダゴンに至り、北の方ゼブルンと、イプタエルの谷に達し、ベテエメクおよびネイエルに至り、北はカブルにいで、

and it turned toward the sunrising to Beth-dagon, and reached to Zebulun, and to the valley of Iphtah-el northward to Beth-emek and Neiel; and it went out to Cabul on the left hand,

更にエブロン、レホブ、ハンモン、カナを経て、大シドンに及び、

and Ebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, even unto great Sidon;

それから、その境はラマに曲り、堅固な町ツロに至る。またその境はホサに曲り、海に至って尽きる。そして、マハラブ、アクジブ、

and the border turned to Ramah, and to the fortified city of Tyre; and the border turned to Hosah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea by the region of Achzib;

ウンマ、アペク、レホブなど、二十二の町々と、それに属する村々があった。

Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty and two cities with their villages.

これがアセルの子孫の部族の、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業であって、その町々と、それに属する村々とである。

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.

第六に、ナフタリの子孫のために、その家族にしたがって、くじを引いた。

The sixth lot came out for the children of Naphtali, even for the children of Naphtali according to their families.

その境はヘレフから、すなわちザアナニイムのかしの木から起り、アダミ・ネケブおよび、ヤブネルを経て、ラクムに至り、ヨルダンに至って尽きる。

And their border was from Heleph, from the oak in Zaanannim, and Adaminekeb, and Jabneel, unto Lakkum; and the goings out thereof were at the Jordan;

そしてその境は西に向かって、アズノテ・タボルに至り、そこからホッコクに出る。南はゼブルンに接し、西はアセルに接し、東はヨルダンのユダに達する。

and the border turned westward to Aznoth-tabor, and went out from thence to Hukkok; and it reached to Zebulun on the south, and reached to Asher on the west, and to Judah at the Jordan toward the sunrising.

その堅固な町々は、ヂデム、ゼル、ハンマテ、ラッカテ、キンネレテ、

And the fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, Rakkath, and Chinnereth,

アダマ、ラマ、ハゾル、

and Adamah, and Ramah, and Hazor,

ケデシ、エデレイ、エンハゾル、

and Kedesh, and Edrei, and En-hazor,

イロン、ミグダルエル、ホレム、ベテアナテ、ベテシメシなどで、十九の町々と、それに属する村々があった。

And Iron, and Migdal-el, Horem, and Beth-anath, and Beth-shemesh; nineteen cities with their villages.

これがナフタリの子孫の部族が、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業であって、その町々と、それに属する村々とである。

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families, the cities with their villages.

第七に、ダンの子孫の部族のために、その家族にしたがって、くじを引いた。

The seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families.

その嗣業の領域には、ゾラ、エシタオル、イルシメシ、

And the border of their inheritance was Zorah, and Eshtaol, and Ir-shemesh,

シャラビム、アヤロン、イテラ、

and Shaalabbin, and Aijalon, and Ithlah,

エロン、テムナ、エクロン、

and Elon, and Timnah, and Ekron,

エルテケ、ギベトン、バアラテ、

and Eltekeh, and Gibbethon, and Baalath,

エホデ、ベネベラク、ガテリンモン、

and Jehud, and Bene-berak, and Gath-rimmon,

メヤルコン、ラッコン、およびヨッパと相対する地域があった。

and Me-jarkon, and Rakkon, with the border over against Joppa.

ただし、ダンの子孫の領域は、彼らのために小さかったので、ダンの子孫は、上って行き、レセムを攻めてそれを取り、つるぎにかけて撃ち滅ぼし、それを獲てそこに住み、先祖ダンの名にしたがって、レセムをダンと名づけた。

And the border of the children of Dan went out beyond them; for the children of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.

これがダンの子孫の部族の、その家族にしたがって獲た嗣業であって、その町々と、それに属する村々とである。

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.

こうして国の各地域を嗣業として分け与えることを終ったとき、イスラエルの人々は、自分たちのうちに、一つの嗣業を、ヌンの子ヨシュアに与えた。

So they made an end of distributing the land for inheritance by the borders thereof; and the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun in the midst of them:

すなわち、主の命に従って、彼が求めた町を与えたが、それはエフライムの山地にあるテムナテ・セラであって、彼はその町を建てなおして、そこに住んだ。

according to the commandment of Jehovah they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath-serah in the hill-country of Ephraim; and he built the city, and dwelt therein.

これらは、祭司エレアザル、ヌンの子ヨシュア、およびイスラエルの子孫の部族の族長たちが、シロにおいて会見の幕屋の入口で、主の前に、くじを引いて分け与えた嗣業である。こうして地を分けることを終った。

These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers` [houses] of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance by lot in Shiloh before Jehovah, at the door of the tent of meeting. So they made an end of dividing the land.

第20章

そこで主はヨシュアに言われた、

And Jehovah spake unto Joshua, saying,

「イスラエルの人々に言いなさい、『先にわたしがモーセによって言っておいた、のがれの町を選び定め、

Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Assign you the cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by Moses,

あやまって、知らずに人を殺した者を、そこへのがれさせなさい。これはあなたがたが、あだを討つ者をさけて、のがれる場所となるでしょう。

that the manslayer that killeth any person unwittingly [and] unawares may flee thither: and they shall be unto you for a refuge from the avenger of blood.

その人は、これらの町の一つにのがれて行って、町の門の入口に立ち、その町の長老たちに、そのわけを述べなければならない。そうすれば、彼らはその人を町に受け入れて、場所を与え、共に住ませるであろう。

And he shall flee unto one of those cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city; and they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.

たとい、あだを討つ者が追ってきても、人を殺したその者を、その手に渡してはならない。彼はあやまって隣人を殺したのであって、もとからそれを憎んでいたのではないからである。

And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver up the manslayer into his hand; because he smote his neighbor unawares, and hated him not beforetime.

その人は、会衆の前に立って、さばきを受けるまで、あるいはその時の大祭司が死ぬまで、その町に住まなければならない。そして後、彼は自分の町、自分の家に帰って行って、逃げ出してきたその町に住むことができる』」。

And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the manslayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

そこで、ナフタリの山地にあるガリラヤのケデシ、エフライムの山地にあるシケム、およびユダの山地にあるキリアテ・アルバすなわちヘブロンを、これがために選び分かち、

And they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (the same is Hebron) in the hill-country of Judah.

またヨルダンの向こう側、エリコの東の方では、ルベンの部族のうちから、高原の荒野にあるベゼル、ガドの部族のうちから、ギレアデのラモテ、マナセの部族のうちから、バシャンのゴランを選び定めた。

And beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness in the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

これらは、イスラエルのすべての人々、およびそのうちに寄留する他国人のために設けられた町々であって、すべて、あやまって人を殺した者を、そこにのがれさせ、会衆の前に立たないうちに、あだを討つ者の手にかかって死ぬことのないようにするためである。

These were the appointed cities for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person unwittingly might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

第21章

時にレビの族長たちは、祭司エレアザル、ヌンの子ヨシュアおよびイスラエルの部族の族長たちのもとにきて、

Then came near the heads of fathers` [houses] of the Levites unto Eleazar the priest, and unto Joshua the son of Nun, and unto the heads of fathers` [houses] of the tribes of the children of Israel;

カナンの地のシロで彼らに言った、「主はかつて、われわれに住むべき町々を与えることと、それに属する放牧地を、家畜のために与えることを、モーセによって命じられました」。

and they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, Jehovah commanded Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.

And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, according to the commandment of Jehovah, these cities with their suburbs.

まずコハテびとの氏族のために、くじを引いた。祭司アロンの子孫であるこれらのレビびとは、くじによって、ユダの部族、シメオンの部族、およびベニヤミンの部族のうちから、十三の町を獲た。

And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the children of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of Judah, and out of the tribe of the Simeonites, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.

その他のコハテびとは、くじによって、エフライムの部族の氏族、ダンの部族、およびマナセの半部族のうちから、十の町を獲た。

And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.

And the children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.

またメラリびとは、その氏族にしたがって、ルベンの部族、ガドの部族、およびゼブルンの部族のうちから、十二の町を獲た。

The children of Merari according to their families had out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

イスラエルの人々は、主がモーセによって命じられたとおりに、これらの町と、その放牧地とを、くじによって、レビびとに与えた。

And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as Jehovah commanded by Moses.

まずユダの部族と、シメオンの部族のうちから、次に名をあげる町々を与えた。

And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are [here] mentioned by name:

これらはレビびとに属するコハテびとの氏族の一つである、アロンの子孫に与えられた。最初のくじが彼らに当ったからである。

and they were for the children of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi; for theirs was the first lot.

すなわちユダの山地にあるキリアテ・アルバすなわちヘブロンおよびその周囲の放牧地を彼らに与えた。このアルバはアナクの父であった。

And they gave them Kiriath-arba, [which Arba was] the father of Anak (the same is Hebron), in the hill-country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.

But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.

And unto the children of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Libnah with its suburbs,

and Holon with its suburbs, and Debir with its suburbs,

And out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its suburbs, Geba with its suburbs,

All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their suburbs.

And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites, even the rest of the children of Kohath, they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim.

すなわち、その町は、人を殺したものの、のがれる町であるエフライムの山地のシケムとその放牧地、ゲゼルとその放牧地、

And they gave them Shechem with its suburbs in the hill-country of Ephraim, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Gezer with its suburbs,

キブザイムとその放牧地、ベテホロンとその放牧地など、四つの町である。

and Kibzaim with its suburbs, and Beth-horon with its suburbs; four cities.

And out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with its suburbs; two cities.

All the cities of the families of the rest of the children of Kohath were ten with their suburbs.

And unto the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the half-tribe of Manasseh [they gave] Golan in Bashan with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Be-eshterah with its suburbs; two cities.

Heshbon with its suburbs, Jazer with its suburbs; four cities in all.

All [these were] the cities of the children of Merari according to their families, even the rest of the families of the Levites; and their lot was twelve cities.

イスラエルの人々の所有のうちに、レビびとが持った町々は、合わせて四十八であって、それに属する放牧地があった。

All the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs.

これらの町々は、それぞれその周囲に放牧地があった。これらの町々はみなそうであった。

These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus it was with all these cities.

このように、主が、イスラエルに与えると、その先祖たちに誓われた地を、ことごとく与えられたので、彼らはそれを獲て、そこに住んだ。

So Jehovah gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.

主は彼らの先祖たちに誓われたように、四方に安息を賜わったので、すべての敵のうち、ひとりも彼らに手向かう者はなかった。主が敵をことごとく彼らの手に渡されたからである。

And Jehovah gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; Jehovah delivered all their enemies into their hand.

主がイスラエルの家に約束されたすべての良いことは、一つとしてたがわず、みな実現した。

There failed not aught of any good thing which Jehovah had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.

第22章

時にヨシュアは、ルベンびと、ガドびと、およびマナセの部族の半ばを呼び集めて、

Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,

言った、「あなたがたは主のしもべモーセが命じたことを、ことごとく守り、またわたしの命じたすべての事にも、わたしの言葉に聞きしたがいました。

and said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, and have hearkened unto my voice in all that I commanded you:

今日まで長い年月の間、あなたがたの兄弟たちを捨てず、あなたがたの神、主の命令を、よく守ってきました。

ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of Jehovah your God.

今はすでに、あなたがたの神、主が、あなたがたの兄弟たちに、先に約束されたとおり、安息を賜わるようになりました。それで、あなたがたは身を返して、主のしもべモーセが、あなたがたに与えたヨルダンの向こう側の所有の地に行き、自分たちの天幕に帰りなさい。

And now Jehovah your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he spake unto them: therefore now turn ye, and get you unto your tents, unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave you beyond the Jordan.

ただ主のしもべモーセが、あなたがたに命じた戒めと、律法とを慎んで行い、あなたがたの神、主を愛し、そのすべての道に歩み、その命令を守って、主につき従い、心をつくし、精神をつくして、主に仕えなさい」。

Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, to love Jehovah your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

そしてヨシュアが彼らを祝福して去らせたので、彼らはその天幕に帰った。

So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went unto their tents.

マナセの部族の半ばには、すでにモーセがバシャンで所有地を与えたが、他の半ばには、ヨシュアがヨルダンのこちら側、西の方で、その兄弟たちのうちに、所有地を与えた。ヨシュアは、彼らをその天幕に送りかえす時、彼らを祝福して、

Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given [inheritance] in Bashan; but unto the other half gave Joshua among their brethren beyond the Jordan westward; moreover when Joshua sent them away unto their tents, he blessed them,

言った、「あなたがたは多くの貨財と、おびただしい数の家畜と、金、銀、青銅、鉄、および多くの衣服を持って天幕に帰り、敵から獲たぶんどり物を兄弟たちに分けなさい」。

and spake unto them, saying, Return with much wealth unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.

こうしてルベンの子孫、ガドの子孫、およびマナセの部族の半ばは、主がモーセによって命じられたように、すでに自分の所有地となっているギレアデの地に行こうと、カナンの地のシロで、イスラエルの人々と別れて帰って行った。

And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the commandment of Jehovah by Moses.

ルベンの子孫、ガドの子孫、およびマナセの部族の半ばが、カナンの地のヨルダンのほとりにきた時、その所で、ヨルダンの岸べに一つの祭壇を築いた。それは大きくて遠くから見える祭壇であった。

And when they came unto the region about the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, a great altar to look upon.

イスラエルの人々は、「ルベンの子孫、ガドの子孫、およびマナセの部族の半ばが、カナンの地の国境、ヨルダンのほとりのイスラエルの人々に属する方で、一つの祭壇を築いた」といううわさを聞いた。

And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that pertaineth to the children of Israel.

イスラエルの人々が、それを聞くとひとしく、イスラエルの人々の全会衆はシロに集まって、彼らの所に攻め上ろうとした。

And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.

そしてイスラエルの人々は、祭司エレアザルの子ピネハスをギレアデの地のルベンの子孫、ガドの子孫、およびマナセの半部族の所につかわし、

And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

イスラエルの各部族のうちから、父祖の家のつかさ、ひとりずつをあげて、合わせて十人のつかさたちを、彼と共に行かせた。これらはみなイスラエルの氏族のうちで、父祖の家のかしらたる人々であった。

and with him ten princes, one prince of a fathers` house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were every one of them head of their fathers` houses among the thousands of Israel.

彼らはギレアデの地に行き、ルベンの子孫、ガドの子孫、およびマナセの半部族に語って言った、

And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,

「主の全会衆はこう言います、『あなたがたがイスラエルの神にむかって、とがを犯し、今日、ひるがえって主に従うことをやめ、自分のために一つの祭壇を築いて、今日、主にそむこうとするのは何事か。

Thus saith the whole congregation of Jehovah, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following Jehovah, in that ye have builded you an altar, to rebel this day against Jehovah?

ペオルで犯した罪で、なお足りないとするのか。それがために主の会衆に災が下ったが、われわれは今日もなお、その罪から清められていない。

Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves unto this day, although there came a plague upon the congregation of Jehovah,

しかもあなたがたは、今日、ひるがえって主に従うことをやめようとするのか。あなたがたが、きょう、主にそむくならば、あす、主はイスラエルの全会衆にむかって怒られるであろう。

that ye must turn away this day from following Jehovah? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to-day against Jehovah, that to-morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.

もしあなたがたの所有の地が清くないのであれば、主の幕屋の立っている主の所有の地に渡ってきて、われわれのうちに、所有の地を獲なさい。ただ、われわれの神、主の祭壇のほかに、自分のために祭壇を築いて、主にそむき、またわれわれをそむく者とならせないでください。

Howbeit, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of Jehovah, wherein Jehovah`s tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against Jehovah, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar besides the altar of Jehovah our God.

ゼラの子アカンは、のろわれた物について、とがを犯し、それがためイスラエルの全会衆に、怒りが臨んだではないか。またその罪によって滅びた者は、彼ひとりではなかった』」。

Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.

その時、ルベンの子孫、ガドの子孫、およびマナセの半部族は、イスラエルの氏族のかしらたちに答えて言った、

Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spake unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,

「力ある者、神、主。力ある者、神、主。主は知ろしめす。イスラエルもまた知らなければならない。もしそれがそむくことであり、あるいは主に罪を犯すことであるならば、きょう、われわれをゆるさないでください。

The Mighty One, God, Jehovah, the Mighty One, God, Jehovah, he knoweth; and Israel he shall know: if it be in rebellion, or if in trespass against Jehovah (save thou us not this day,)

われわれが祭壇を築いたことが、もし主に従うことをやめるためであり、またその上に、燔祭、素祭をささげるためであり、あるいはまたその上に、酬恩祭の犠牲をささげるためであったならば、主みずから、その罪を問いただしてください。

that we have built us an altar to turn away from following Jehovah; or if to offer thereon burnt-offering or meal-offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace-offerings thereon, let Jehovah himself require it;

しかし、われわれは次のことを考えてしたのです。すなわち、のちの日になって、あなたがたの子孫が、われわれの子孫にむかって言うことがあるかも知れません、『あなたがたは、イスラエルの神、主と、なんの関係があるのですか。

and if we have not [rather] out of carefulness done this, [and] of purpose, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with Jehovah, the God of Israel?

ルベンの子孫と、ガドの子孫よ、主は、あなたがたと、われわれとの間に、ヨルダンを境とされました。あなたがたは主の民の特権がありません』。こう言って、あなたがたの子孫が、われわれの子孫に、主を拝むことをやめさせるかも知れないので、

for Jehovah hath made the Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no portion in Jehovah: so might your children make our children cease from fearing Jehovah.

われわれは言いました、『さあ、われわれは一つの祭壇を築こう。燔祭のためではなく、また犠牲のためでもなく、

Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice:

ただあなたがたと、われわれとの間、およびわれわれの後の子孫の間に、証拠とならせて、われわれが、燔祭と犠牲、および酬恩祭をもって、主の前で、主につとめをするためである。こうすれば、のちの日になって、あなたがたの子孫が、われわれの子孫に、「あなたがたは主の民の特権がありません」とは言わないであろう』。

but it shall be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may do the service of Jehovah before him with our burnt-offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace-offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no portion in Jehovah.

またわれわれは言いました、『のちの日に、われわれ、またわれわれの子孫が、もしそのようなことを言われるならば、その時、われわれは言おう、「われわれの先祖が造った主の祭壇の型をごらんなさい。これは燔祭のためではなく、また犠牲のためでもなく、あなたがたと、われわれとの間の証拠である」。

Therefore said we, It shall be, when they so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we shall say, Behold the pattern of the altar of Jehovah, which our fathers made, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.

主にそむき、ひるがえって今日、主に従うことをやめて、われわれの神、主の幕屋の前にある祭壇のほかに、燔祭、素祭、または犠牲をささげるための祭壇を築くようなことは、決していたしません』」。

Far be it from us that we should rebel against Jehovah, and turn away this day from following Jehovah, to build an altar for burnt-offering, for meal-offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of Jehovah our God that is before his tabernacle.

祭司ピネハス、および会衆のつかさたち、すなわち彼と共に行ったイスラエルの氏族のかしらたちは、ルベンの子孫、ガドの子孫、およびマナセの子孫が語った言葉を聞いて、それを良しとした。

And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them well.

そして祭司エレアザルの子ピネハスは、ルベンの子孫、ガドの子孫、およびマナセの子孫に言った、「今日、われわれは、主がわれわれのうちにいますことを知った。あなたがたが、主にむかって、このとがを犯さなかったからである。あなたがたは今、イスラエルの人々を、主の手から救い出したのです」。

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we know that Jehovah is in the midst of us, because ye have not committed this trespass against Jehovah: now have ye delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of Jehovah.

こうして祭司エレアザルの子ピネハスと、つかさたちは、ルベンの子孫、およびガドの子孫に別れて、ギレアデの地からカナンの地に帰り、イスラエルの人々のところに行って復命したので、

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

イスラエルの人々はそれを良しとした。そしてイスラエルの人々は神をほめたたえ、ルベンの子孫、およびガドの子孫の住んでいる国を滅ぼすために攻め上ろうとは、もはや言わなかった。

And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spake no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and the children of Gad dwelt.

ルベンの子孫とガドの子孫は、その祭壇を「あかし」と名づけて言った、「これは、われわれの間にあって、主が神にいますというあかしをするものである」。

And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar [Ed]: For, [said they], it is a witness between us that Jehovah is God.

第23章

主がイスラエルの周囲の敵を、ことごとく除いて、イスラエルに安息を賜わってのち、久しくたち、ヨシュアも年が進んで老いた。

And it came to pass after many days, when Jehovah had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, and Joshua was old and well stricken in years;

ヨシュアはイスラエルのすべての人、その長老、かしらたち、さばきびと、つかさびとたちを呼び集めて言った、「わたしは年も進んで老人となった。

that Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders and for their heads, and for their judges and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and well stricken in years:

あなたがたは、すでにあなたがたの神、主が、このもろもろの国びとに行われたすべてのことを見た。あなたがたのために戦われたのは、あなたがたの神、主である。

and ye have seen all that Jehovah your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for Jehovah your God, he it is that hath fought for you.

見よ、わたしはヨルダンから、日の入る方、大海までの、このもろもろの残っている国々と、すでにわたしが滅ぼし去ったすべての国々を、くじをもって、あなたがたに分け与え、あなたがたの各部族の嗣業とさせた。

Behold, I have allotted unto you these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun.

あなたがたの前から、その国民を打ち払い、あなたがたの目の前から追い払われるのは、あなたがたの神、主である。そしてあなたがたの神、主が約束されたように、あなたがたは彼らの地を獲るであろう。

And Jehovah your God, he will thrust them out from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as Jehovah your God spake unto you.

それゆえ、あなたがたは堅く立って、モーセの律法の書にしるされていることを、ことごとく守って行わなければならない。それを離れて右にも左にも曲ってはならない。

Therefore be ye very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;

that ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear [by them], neither serve them, nor bow down yourselves unto them;

but cleave unto Jehovah your God, as ye have done unto this day.

For Jehovah hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath stood before you unto this day.

あなたがたのひとりは、千人を追い払うことができるであろう。あなたがたの神、主が約束されたように、みずからあなたがたのために戦われるからである。

One man of you shall chase a thousand; for Jehovah your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he spake unto you.

それゆえ、あなたがたは深く慎んで、あなたがたの神、主を愛さなければならない。

Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love Jehovah your God.

Else if ye do at all go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you;

know for a certainty that Jehovah your God will no more drive these nations from out of your sight; but they shall be a snare and a trap unto you, and a scourge in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which Jehovah your God hath given you.

見よ、今日、わたしは世の人のみな行く道を行こうとする。あなたがたがみな、心のうちにまた、肝に銘じて知っているように、あなたがたの神、主が、あなたがたについて約束されたもろもろの良いことで、一つも欠けたものはなかった。みなあなたがたに臨んで、一つも欠けたものはなかった。

And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which Jehovah your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, not one thing hath failed thereof.

しかし、あなたがたの神、主があなたがたについて約束された、もろもろの良いことが、あなたがたに臨んだように、主はまた、もろもろの悪いことをあなたがたに下して、あなたがたの神、主が賜わったこの良い地から、ついに、あなたがたを滅ぼし断たれるであろう。

And it shall come to pass, that as all the good things are come upon you of which Jehovah your God spake unto you, so will Jehovah bring upon you all the evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which Jehovah your God hath given you.

もし、あなたがたの神、主が命じられたその契約を犯し、行って他の神々に仕え、それを拝むならば、主はあなたがたにむかって怒りを発し、あなたがたは、主が賜わった良い地から、すみやかに滅びうせるであろう」。

When ye transgress the covenant of Jehovah your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow down yourselves to them; then will the anger of Jehovah be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.

第24章

ヨシュアは、イスラエルのすべての部族をシケムに集め、イスラエルの長老、かしら、さばきびと、つかさたちを召し寄せて、共に神の前に進み出た。

And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

そしてヨシュアはすべての民に言った、「イスラエルの神、主は、こう仰せられる、『あなたがたの先祖たち、すなわちアブラハムの父、ナホルの父テラは、昔、ユフラテ川の向こうに住み、みな、ほかの神々に仕えていたが、

And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor: and they served other gods.

わたしは、あなたがたの先祖アブラハムを、川の向こうから連れ出して、カナンの全地を導き通り、その子孫を増した。わたしは彼にイサクを与え、

And I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.

And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it: and Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did in the midst thereof: and afterward I brought you out.

And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and with horsemen unto the Red Sea.

And when they cried out unto Jehovah, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness many days.

And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that dwelt beyond the Jordan: and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand, and ye possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel: and he sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you;

but I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.

And ye went over the Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.

And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

And I gave you a land whereon thou hadst not labored, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell therein; of vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

それゆえ、いま、あなたがたは主を恐れ、まことと、まごころと、真実とをもって、主に仕え、あなたがたの先祖が、川の向こう、およびエジプトで仕えた他の神々を除き去って、主に仕えなさい。

Now therefore fear Jehovah, and serve him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt; and serve ye Jehovah.

もしあなたがたが主に仕えることを、こころよしとしないのならば、あなたがたの先祖が、川の向こうで仕えた神々でも、または、いまあなたがたの住む地のアモリびとの神々でも、あなたがたの仕える者を、きょう、選びなさい。ただし、わたしとわたしの家とは共に主に仕えます」。

And if it seem evil unto you to serve Jehovah, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah.

And the people answered and said, Far be it from us that we should forsake Jehovah, to serve other gods;

われわれの神、主がみずからわれわれと、われわれの先祖とを、エジプトの地、奴隷の家から導き上り、またわれわれの目の前で、あの大いなるしるしを行い、われわれの行くすべての道で守り、われわれが通ったすべての国民の中でわれわれを守られたからです。

for Jehovah our God, he it is that brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and that did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed;

主はまた、この地に住んでいたアモリびとなど、すべての民を、われわれの前から追い払われました。それゆえ、われわれも主に仕えます。主はわれわれの神だからです」。

and Jehovah drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites that dwelt in the land: therefore we also will serve Jehovah; for he is our God.

しかし、ヨシュアは民に言った、「あなたがたは主に仕えることはできないであろう。主は聖なる神であり、ねたむ神であって、あなたがたの罪、あなたがたのとがを、ゆるされないからである。

And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve Jehovah; for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgression nor your sins.

もしあなたがたが主を捨てて、異なる神々に仕えるならば、あなたがたにさいわいを下されたのちにも、ひるがえってあなたがたに災をくだし、あなたがたを滅ぼしつくされるであろう」。

If ye forsake Jehovah, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.

民はヨシュアに言った、「いいえ、われわれは主に仕えます」。

And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve Jehovah.

そこでヨシュアは民に言った、「あなたがたは主を選んで、主に仕えると言った。あなたがたみずからその証人である」。彼らは言った、「われわれは証人です」。

And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you Jehovah, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.

Now therefore put away, [said he], the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto Jehovah, the God of Israel.

And the people said unto Joshua, Jehovah our God will we serve, and unto his voice will we hearken.

So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Jehovah.

ヨシュアは、すべての民に言った、「見よ、この石はわれわれのあかしとなるであろう。主がわれわれに語られたすべての言葉を、聞いたからである。それゆえ、あなたがたが自分の神を捨てることのないために、この石が、あなたがたのあかしとなるであろう」。

And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it hath heard all the words of Jehovah which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest ye deny your God.

こうしてヨシュアは民を、おのおのその嗣業の地に帰し去らせた。

So Joshua sent the people away, every man unto his inheritance.

これらの事の後、主のしもべ、ヌンの子ヨシュアは百十歳で死んだ、

And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.

And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

And Israel served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of Jehovah, that he had wrought for Israel.

イスラエルの人々が、エジプトから携え上ったヨセフの骨は、むかしヤコブが銀百枚で、シケムの父ハモルの子らから買い取ったシケムのうちの地所の一部に葬られた。これはヨセフの子孫の嗣業となった。

And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money: and they became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill-country of Ephraim.
