The reign of David and the establishment of Jerusalem

A continuation of the Samuel narrative, focused on David's consolidation of the monarchy, the capture of Jerusalem, the dynastic promise, and the turbulent later years of his reign — including the rebellions of Absalom and Sheba.

サウルが死んだ後、ダビデはアマレクびとを撃って帰り、ふつかの間チクラグにとどまっていたが、

And it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

三日目となって、ひとりの人が、その着物を裂き、頭に土をかぶって、サウルの陣営からきた。そしてダビデのもとにきて、地に伏して拝した。

it came to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

ダビデは彼に言った、「あなたはどこからきたのか」。彼はダビデに言った、「わたしはイスラエルの陣営から、のがれてきたのです」。

And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.

ダビデは彼に言った、「様子はどうであったか話しなさい」。彼は答えた、「民は戦いから逃げ、民の多くは倒れて死に、サウルとその子ヨナタンもまた死にました」。

And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, The people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.

ダビデは自分と話している若者に言った、「あなたはサウルとその子ヨナタンが死んだのを、どうして知ったのか」。

And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?

彼に話している若者は言った、「わたしは、はからずも、ギルボア山にいましたが、サウルはそのやりによりかかっており、戦車と騎兵とが彼に攻め寄ろうとしていました。

And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and the horsemen followed hard after him.

その時、彼はうしろを振り向いてわたしを見、わたしを呼びましたので、『ここにいます』とわたしは答えました。

And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

彼は『おまえはだれか』と言いましたので、『アマレクびとです』と答えました。

And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

彼はまたわたしに言いました、『そばにきて殺してください。わたしは苦しみに耐えない。まだ命があるからです』。

And he said unto me, Stand, I pray thee, beside me, and slay me; for anguish hath taken hold of me, because my life is yet whole in me.

そこで、わたしはそのそばにいって彼を殺しました。彼がすでに倒れて、生きることのできないのを知ったからです。そしてわたしは彼の頭にあった冠と、腕につけていた腕輪とを取って、それをわが主のもとに携えてきたのです」。

So I stood beside him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

そのときダビデは自分の着物をつかんでそれを裂き、彼と共にいた人々も皆同じようにした。

Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

彼らはサウルのため、またその子ヨナタンのため、また主の民のため、またイスラエルの家のために悲しみ泣いて、夕暮まで食を断った。それは彼らがつるぎに倒れたからである。

and they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

ダビデは自分と話していた若者に言った、「あなたはどこの人ですか」。彼は言った、「アマレクびとで、寄留の他国人の子です」。

And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.

ダビデはまた彼に言った、「どうしてあなたは手を伸べて主の油を注がれた者を殺すことを恐れなかったのですか」。

And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy Jehovah`s anointed?

ダビデはひとりの若者を呼び、「近寄って彼を撃て」と言った。そこで彼を撃ったので死んだ。

And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him, so that he died.

ダビデは彼に言った、「あなたの流した血の責めはあなたに帰する。あなたが自分の口から、『わたしは主の油を注がれた者を殺した』と言って、自身にむかって証拠を立てたからである」。

And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain Jehovah`s anointed.

ダビデはこの悲しみの歌をもって、サウルとその子ヨナタンのために哀悼した。――

And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son

これは、ユダの人々に教えるための弓の歌で、ヤシャルの書にしるされている。――彼は言った、

(and he bade them teach the children of Judah [the song of] the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):

「イスラエルよ、あなたの栄光は、あなたの高き所で殺された。ああ、勇士たちは、ついに倒れた。

Thy glory, O Israel, is slain upon thy high places! How are the mighty fallen!

ガテにこの事を告げてはいけない。アシケロンのちまたに伝えてはならない。おそらくはペリシテびとの娘たちが喜び、割礼なき者の娘たちが勝ちほこるであろう。

Tell it not in Gath, Publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon; Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

ギルボアの山よ、露はおまえの上におりるな。死の野よ、雨もおまえの上に降るな。その所に勇士たちの盾は捨てられ、サウルの盾は油を塗らずに捨てられた。

Ye mountains of Gilboa, Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of offerings: For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.

殺した者の血を飲まずには、ヨナタンの弓は退かず、勇士の脂肪を食べないでは、サウルのつるぎは、むなしくは帰らなかった。

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan turned not back, And the sword of Saul returned not empty.

サウルとヨナタンとは、愛され、かつ喜ばれた。彼らは生きるにも、死ぬにも離れず、わしよりも早く、ししよりも強かった。

Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they were not divided: They were swifter than eagles, They were stronger than lions.

イスラエルの娘たちよ、サウルのために泣け。彼は緋色の着物をもって、はなやかにあなたがたを装い、あなたがたの着物に金の飾りをつけた。

Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, Who clothed you in scarlet delicately, Who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

ああ、勇士たちは戦いのさなかに倒れた。ヨナタンは、あなたの高き所で殺された。

How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slain upon thy high places.

わが兄弟ヨナタンよ、あなたのためわたしは悲しむ。あなたはわたしにとって、いとも楽しい者であった。あなたがわたしを愛するのは世の常のようでなく、女の愛にもまさっていた。

I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: Very pleasant hast thou been unto me: Thy love to me was wonderful, Passing the love of women.

ああ、勇士たちは倒れた。戦いの器はうせた」。

How are the mighty fallen, And the weapons of war perished!

第2章

この後、ダビデは主に問うて言った、「わたしはユダの一つの町に上るべきでしょうか」。主は彼に言われた、「上りなさい」。ダビデは言った、「どこへ上るべきでしょうか」。主は言われた、「ヘブロンへ」。

And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.

そこでダビデはその所へ上った。彼のふたりの妻、エズレルの女アヒノアムと、カルメルびとナバルの妻であったアビガイルも上った。

So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

ダビデはまた自分と共にいた人々を、皆その家族と共に連れて上った。そして彼らはヘブロンの町々に住んだ。

And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

時にユダの人々がきて、その所でダビデに油を注ぎ、ユダの家の王とした。人々がダビデに告げて、「サウルを葬ったのはヤベシ・ギレアデの人々である」と言ったので、

And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, The men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.

ダビデは使者をヤベシ・ギレアデの人々につかわして彼らに言った、「あなたがたは、主君サウルにこの忠誠をあらわして彼を葬った。どうぞ主があなたがたを祝福されるように。

And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of Jehovah, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.

どうぞ主がいまあなたがたに、いつくしみと真実を示されるように。あなたがたが、この事をしたので、わたしもまたあなたがたに好意を示すであろう。

And now Jehovah show lovingkindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.

今あなたがたは手を強くし、雄々しくあれ。あなたがたの主君サウルは死に、ユダの家がわたしに油を注いで、彼らの王としたからである」。

Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be ye valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

さてサウルの軍の長、ネルの子アブネルは、さきにサウルの子イシボセテを取り、マハナイムに連れて渡り、

Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul`s host, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;

彼をギレアデ、アシュルびと、エズレル、エフライム、ベニヤミンおよび全イスラエルの王とした。

and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

サウルの子イシボセテはイスラエルの王となった時、四十歳であって、二年の間、世を治めたが、ユダの家はダビデに従った。

Ish-bosheth, Saul`s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

ダビデがヘブロンにいてユダの家の王であった日数は七年と六か月であった。

And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

ネルの子アブネル、およびサウルの子イシボセテの家来たちはマハナイムを出てギベオンへ行った。

And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

ゼルヤの子ヨアブとダビデの家来たちも出ていって、ギベオンの池のそばで彼らと出会い、一方は池のこちら側に、一方は池のあちら側にすわった。

And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

アブネルはヨアブに言った、「さあ、若者たちを立たせて、われわれの前で勝負をさせよう」。ヨアブは言った、「彼らを立たせよう」。

And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

こうしてサウルの子イシボセテとベニヤミンびととのために十二人、およびダビデの家来たち十二人を数えて出した。彼らは立って進み、

Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

おのおの相手の頭を捕え、つるぎを相手のわき腹に刺し、こうして彼らは共に倒れた。それゆえ、その所はヘルカテ・ハヅリムと呼ばれた。それはギベオンにある。

And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and [thrust] his sword in his fellow`s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

その日、戦いはひじょうに激しく、アブネルとイスラエルの人々はダビデの家来たちの前に敗れた。

And the battle was very sore that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

その所にゼルヤの三人の子、ヨアブ、アビシャイ、およびアサヘルがいたが、アサヘルは足の早いこと、野のかもしかのようであった。

And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.

アサヘルはアブネルのあとを追っていったが、行くのに右にも左にも曲ることなく、アブネルのあとに走った。

And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

アブネルは後をふりむいて言った、「あなたはアサヘルであったか」。アサヘルは答えた、「わたしです」。

Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Is it thou, Asahel? And he answered, It is I.

アブネルは彼に言った、「右か左に曲って、若者のひとりを捕え、そのよろいを奪いなさい」。しかしアサヘルはアブネルを追うことをやめず、ほかに向かおうともしなかった。

And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.

アブネルはふたたびアサヘルに言った、「わたしを追うことをやめて、ほかに向かいなさい。あなたを地に撃ち倒すことなど、どうしてわたしにできようか。それをすれば、わたしは、どうしてあなたの兄ヨアブに顔を合わせることができようか」。

And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?

それでもなお彼は、ほかに向かうことを拒んだので、アブネルは、やりの石突きで彼の腹を突いたので、やりはその背中に出た。彼はそこに倒れて、その場で死んだ。そしてアサヘルが倒れて死んでいる場所に来る者は皆立ちとどまった。

Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

しかしヨアブとアビシャイとは、なおアブネルのあとを追ったが、彼らがギベオンの荒野の道のほとり、ギアの前にあるアンマの山にきた時、日は暮れた。

But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

ベニヤミンの人々はアブネルのあとについてきて、集まり、一隊となって、一つの山の頂に立った。

And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.

その時アブネルはヨアブに呼ばわって言った、「いつまでもつるぎをもって滅ぼそうとするのか。あなたはその結果の悲惨なのを知らないのか。いつまで民にその兄弟を追うことをやめよと命じないのか」。

Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?

ヨアブは言った、「神は生きておられる。もしあなたが言いださなかったならば、民はおのおのその兄弟を追わずに、朝のうちに去っていたであろう」。

And Joab said, As God liveth, if thou hadst not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother.

こうしてヨアブは角笛を吹いたので、民はみな立ちとどまって、もはやイスラエルのあとを追わず、また重ねて戦わなかった。

So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.

アブネルとその従者たちは、夜もすがら、アラバを通って行き、ヨルダンを渡り、昼まで行進を続けてマハナイムに着いた。

And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.

ヨアブはアブネルを追うことをやめて帰り、民をみな集めたが、ダビデの家来たち十九人とアサヘルとが見当らなかった。

And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David`s servants nineteen men and Asahel.

しかし、ダビデの家来たちは、アブネルの従者であるベニヤミンの人々三百六十人を撃ち殺した。

But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner`s men, [so that] three hundred and threescore men died.

人々はアサヘルを取り上げてベツレヘムにあるその父の墓に葬った。ヨアブとその従者たちは、夜もすがら行って、夜明けにヘブロンに着いた。

And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and the day brake upon them at Hebron.

第3章

サウルの家とダビデの家との間の戦争は久しく続き、ダビデはますます強くなり、サウルの家はますます弱くなった。

Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: and David waxed stronger and stronger, but the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.

ヘブロンでダビデに男の子が生れた。彼の長子はエズレルの女アヒノアムの産んだアムノン、

And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his first-born was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

その次はカルメルびとナバルの妻であったアビガイルの産んだキレアブ、第三はゲシュルの王タルマイの娘マアカの子アブサロム、

and his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

第四はハギテの子アドニヤ、第五はアビタルの子シパテヤ、

and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

第六はダビデの妻エグラの産んだイテレアム。これらの子がヘブロンでダビデに生れた。

and the sixth, Ithream, of Eglah, David`s wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

サウルの家とダビデの家とが戦いを続けている間に、アブネルはサウルの家で、強くなってきた。

And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong in the house of Saul.

さてサウルには、ひとりのそばめがあった。その名をリヅパといい、アヤの娘であったが、イシボセテはアブネルに言った、「あなたはなぜわたしの父のそばめのところにはいったのですか」。

Now Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and [Ish-bosheth] said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father`s concubine?

アブネルはイシボセテの言葉を聞き、非常に怒って言った、「わたしはユダの犬のかしらですか。わたしはきょう、あなたの父サウルの家と、その兄弟と、その友人とに忠誠をあらわして、あなたをダビデの手に渡すことをしなかったのに、あなたはきょう、女の事のあやまちを挙げてわたしを責められる。

Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog`s head that belongeth to Judah? This day do I show kindness unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David; and yet thou chargest me this day with a fault concerning this woman.

主がダビデに誓われたことを、わたしが彼のためになし遂げないならば、神がアブネルをいくえにも罰しられるように。

God do so to Abner, and more also, if, as Jehovah hath sworn to David, I do not even so to him;

すなわち王国をサウルの家から移し、ダビデの位をダンからベエルシバに至るまで、イスラエルとユダの上に立たせられるであろう」。

to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba.

イシボセテはアブネルを恐れたので、ひと言も彼に答えることができなかった。

And he could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.

アブネルはヘブロンにいるダビデのもとに使者をつかわして言った、「国はだれのものですか。わたしと契約を結びなさい。わたしはあなたに力添えして、イスラエルをことごとくあなたのものにしましょう」。

And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying [also], Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.

ダビデは言った、「よろしい。わたしは、あなたと契約を結びましょう。ただし一つの事をあなたに求めます。あなたがきてわたしの顔を見るとき、まずサウルの娘ミカルを連れて来るのでなければ、わたしの顔を見ることはできません」。

And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee; but one thing I require of thee: that is, thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal, Saul`s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.

それからダビデは使者をサウルの子イシボセテにつかわして言った、「ペリシテびとの陽の皮一百をもってめとったわたしの妻ミカルを引き渡しなさい」。

And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth, Saul`s son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to me for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.

そこでイシボセテは人をやって彼女をその夫、ライシの子パルテエルから取ったので、

And Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Paltiel the son of Laish.

その夫は彼女と共に行き、泣きながら彼女のあとについて、バホリムまで行ったが、アブネルが彼に「帰って行け」と言ったので彼は帰った。

And her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return: and he returned.

アブネルはイスラエルの長老たちと協議して言った、「あなたがたは以前からダビデをあなたがたの王とすることを求めていましたが、

And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, In times past ye sought for David to be king over you:

今それをしなさい。主がダビデについて、『わたしのしもべダビデの手によって、わたしの民イスラエルをペリシテびとの手、およびもろもろの敵の手から救い出すであろう』と言われたからです」。

now then do it; for Jehovah hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.

アブネルはまたベニヤミンにも語った。そしてアブネルは、イスラエルとベニヤミンの全家が良いと思うことをみな、ヘブロンでダビデに告げようとして出発した。

And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and to the whole house of Benjamin.

アブネルが二十人を従えてヘブロンにいるダビデのもとに行った時、ダビデはアブネルと彼に従っている従者たちのために酒宴を設けた。

So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast.

アブネルはダビデに言った、「わたしは立って行き、イスラエルをことごとく、わが主、王のもとに集めて、あなたと契約を結ばせ、あなたの望むものをことごとく治められるようにいたしましょう」。こうしてダビデはアブネルを送り帰らせたので彼は安全に去って行った。

And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thy soul desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

ちょうどその時、ダビデの家来たちはヨアブと共に多くのぶんどり物を携えて略奪から帰ってきた。しかしアブネルはヘブロンのダビデのもとにはいなかった。ダビデが彼を帰らせて彼が安全に去ったからである。

And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from a foray, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

ヨアブおよび彼と共にいた軍勢がみな帰ってきたとき、人々はヨアブに言った、「ネルの子アブネルが王のもとにきたが、王が彼を帰らせたので彼は安全に去った」。

When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.

そこでヨアブは王のもとに行って言った、「あなたは何をなさったのですか。アブネルがあなたの所にきたのに、あなたはどうして、彼を返し去らせられたのですか。

Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?

ネルの子アブネルがあなたを欺くためにきたこと、そしてあなたの出入りを知り、またあなたのなさっていることを、ことごとく知るためにきたことをあなたはごぞんじです」。

Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.

ヨアブはダビデの所から出てきて、使者をつかわし、アブネルを追わせたので、彼らはシラの井戸から彼を連れて帰った。しかしダビデはその事を知らなかった。

And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.

アブネルがヘブロンに帰ってきたとき、ヨアブはひそかに語ろうといって彼を門のうちに連れて行き、その所で彼の腹を刺して死なせ、自分の兄弟アサヘルの血を報いた。

And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there in the body, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

その後ダビデはこの事を聞いて言った、「わたしとわたしの王国とは、ネルの子アブネルの血に関して、主の前に永久に罪はない。

And afterward, when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before Jehovah for ever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner:

どうぞ、その罪がヨアブの頭と、その父の全家に帰するように。またヨアブの家には流出を病む者、らい病人、つえにたよる者、つるぎに倒れる者、または食物の乏しい者が絶えないように」。

let it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all his father`s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth by the sword, or that lacketh bread.

こうしてヨアブとその弟アビシャイとはアブネルを殺したが、それは彼がギベオンの戦いで彼らの兄弟アサヘルを殺したためであった。

So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

ダビデはヨアブおよび自分と共にいるすべての民に言った、「あなたがたは着物を裂き、荒布をまとい、アブネルの前に嘆きながら行きなさい」。そしてダビデ王はその棺のあとに従った。

And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David followed the bier.

人々はアブネルをヘブロンに葬った。王はアブネルの墓で声をあげて泣き、民もみな泣いた。

And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.

王はアブネルのために悲しみの歌を作って言った、「愚かな人の死ぬように、アブネルがどうして死んだのか。

And the king lamented for Abner, and said, Should Abner die as a fool dieth?

あなたの手は縛られず、足には足かせもかけられないのに、悪人の前に倒れる人のように、あなたは倒れた」。そして民は皆、ふたたび彼のために泣いた。

Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: As a man falleth before the children of iniquity, so didst thou fall. And all the people wept again over him.

民はみなきて、日のあるうちに、ダビデにパンを食べさせようとしたが、ダビデは誓って言った、「もしわたしが日の入る前に、パンでも、ほかのものでも味わうならば、神がわたしをいくえにも罰しられるように」。

And all the people came to cause David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David sware, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or aught else, till the sun be down.

民はみなそれを見て満足した。すべて王のすることは民を満足させた。

And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them; as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.

その日すべての民およびイスラエルは皆、ネルの子アブネルを殺したのは、王の意思によるものでないことを知った。

So all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner.

王はその家来たちに言った、「この日イスラエルで、ひとりの偉大なる将軍が倒れたのをあなたがたは知らないのか。

And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?

わたしは油を注がれた王であるけれども、今日なお弱い。ゼルヤの子であるこれらの人々はわたしの手におえない。どうぞ主が悪を行う者に、その悪にしたがって報いられるように」。

And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me: Jehovah reward the evil-doer according to his wickedness.

第4章

サウルの子イシボセテは、アブネルがヘブロンで死んだことを聞いて、その力を失い、イスラエルは皆あわてた。

And when [Ish-bosheth], Saul`s son, heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands became feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled.

サウルの子イシボセテにはふたりの略奪隊の隊長があった。ひとりの名はバアナ、他のひとりの名はレカブといって、ベニヤミンの子孫であるベロテびとリンモンの子たちであった。（それはベロテもまたベニヤミンのうちに数えられているからである。

And [Ish-bosheth], Saul`s son, [had] two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin (for Beeroth also is reckoned to Benjamin:

ベロテびとはギッタイムに逃げていって、今日までその所に寄留している）。

and the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and have been sojourners there until this day).

さてサウルの子ヨナタンに足のなえた子がひとりあった。エズレルからサウルとヨナタンの事の知らせがきた時、彼は五歳であった。うばが彼を抱いて逃げたが、急いで逃げる時、その子は落ちて足なえとなった。その名はメピボセテといった。

Now Jonathan, Saul`s son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel; and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

ベロテびとリンモンの子たち、レカブとバアナとは出立して、日の暑いころイシボセテの家にきたが、イシボセテは昼寝をしていた。

And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ish-bosheth, as he took his rest at noon.

家の門を守る女は麦をあおぎ分けていたが、眠くなって寝てしまった。そこでレカブとその兄弟バアナは、ひそかに中にはいった。

And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him in the body: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.

彼らが家にはいった時、イシボセテは寝室で床の上に寝ていたので、彼らはそれを撃って殺し、その首をはね、その首を取って、よもすがらアラバの道を行き、

Now when they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and went by the way of the Arabah all night.

イシボセテの首をヘブロンにいるダビデのもとに携えて行って王に言った、「あなたの命を求めたあなたの敵サウルの子イシボセテの首です。主はきょう、わが君、王のためにサウルとそのすえとに報復されました」。

And they brought the head of Ish-bosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold, the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, thine enemy, who sought thy life; and Jehovah hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.

ダビデはベロテびとリンモンの子レカブとその兄弟バアナに答えた、「わたしの命を、もろもろの苦難から救われた主は生きておられる。

And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As Jehovah liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

わたしはかつて、人がわたしに告げて、『見よ、サウルは死んだ』と言って、みずから良いおとずれを伝える者と思っていた者を捕えてチクラグで殺し、そのおとずれに報いたのだ。

when one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his tidings.

悪人が正しい人をその家の床の上で殺したときは、なおさらのことだ。今わたしが、彼の血を流した罪を報い、あなたがたを、この地から絶ち滅ぼさないでおくであろうか」。

How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed, shall I not now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?

そしてダビデは若者たちに命じたので、若者たちは彼らを殺し、その手足を切り離し、ヘブロンの池のほとりで木に掛けた。人々はイシボセテの首を持って行って、ヘブロンにあるアブネルの墓に葬った。

And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth, and buried it in the grave of Abner in Hebron.

第5章

イスラエルのすべての部族はヘブロンにいるダビデのもとにきて言った、「われわれは、あなたの骨肉です。

Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

先にサウルがわれわれの王であった時にも、あなたはイスラエルを率いて出入りされました。そして主はあなたに、『あなたはわたしの民イスラエルを牧するであろう。またあなたはイスラエルの君となるであろう』と言われました」。

In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was thou that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and Jehovah said to thee, Thou shalt be shepherd of my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over Israel.

このようにイスラエルの長老たちが皆、ヘブロンにいる王のもとにきたので、ダビデ王はヘブロンで主の前に彼らと契約を結んだ。そして彼らはダビデに油を注いでイスラエルの王とした。

So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Jehovah: and they anointed David king over Israel.

ダビデは王となったとき三十歳で、四十年の間、世を治めた。

David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

すなわちヘブロンで七年六か月ユダを治め、またエルサレムで三十三年、全イスラエルとユダを治めた。

In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

王とその従者たちとはエルサレムへ行って、その地の住民エブスびとを攻めた。エブスびとはダビデに言った、「あなたはけっして、ここに攻め入ることはできない。かえって、めしいや足なえでも、あなたを追い払うであろう」。彼らが「ダビデはここに攻め入ることはできない」と思ったからである。

And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither; thinking, David cannot come in hither.

ところがダビデはシオンの要害を取った。これがダビデの町である。

Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion; the same is the city of David.

その日ダビデは、「だれでもエブスびとを撃とうとする人は、水をくみ上げる縦穴を上って行って、ダビデが心に憎んでいる足なえやめしいを撃て」と言った。それゆえに人々は、「めしいや足なえは、宮にはいってはならない」と言いならわしている。

And David said on that day, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites, let him get up to the watercourse, and [smite] the lame and the blind, that are hated of David`s soul. Wherefore they say, There are the blind and the lame; he cannot come into the house.

ダビデはその要害に住んで、これをダビデの町と名づけた。またダビデはミロから内の周囲に城壁を築いた。

And David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.

こうしてダビデはますます大いなる者となり、かつ万軍の神、主が彼と共におられた。

And David waxed greater and greater; for Jehovah, the God of hosts, was with him.

ツロの王ヒラムはダビデに使者をつかわして、香柏および大工と石工を送った。彼らはダビデのために家を建てた。

And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar-trees, and carpenters, and masons; and they built David a house.

そしてダビデは主が自分を堅く立ててイスラエルの王とされたこと、主がその民イスラエルのためにその王国を興されたことを悟った。

And David perceived that Jehovah had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel`s sake.

ダビデはヘブロンからきて後、さらにエルサレムで妻とそばめを入れたので、むすこと娘がまたダビデに生れた。

And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron; and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.

エルサレムで彼に生れた者の名は次のとおりである。シャンムア、ショバブ、ナタン、ソロモン、

And these are the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem: Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,

イブハル、エリシュア、ネペグ、ヤピア、

and Ibhar, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

エリシャマ、エリアダ、およびエリペレテ。

and Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphelet.

さてペリシテびとは、ダビデが油を注がれてイスラエルの王になったことを聞き、みな上ってきてダビデを捜したが、ダビデはそれを聞いて要害に下って行った。

And when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the stronghold.

ペリシテびとはきて、レパイムの谷に広がっていた。

Now the Philistines had come and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

ダビデは主に問うて言った、「ペリシテびとに向かって上るべきでしょうか。あなたは彼らをわたしの手に渡されるでしょうか」。主はダビデに言われた、「上るがよい。わたしはかならずペリシテびとをあなたの手に渡すであろう」。

And David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into my hand? And Jehovah said unto David, Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into thy hand.

そこでダビデはバアル・ペラジムへ行って、彼らをその所で撃ち破り、そして言った、「主は、破り出る水のように、敵をわたしの前に破られた」。それゆえにその所の名はバアル・ペラジムと呼ばれている。

And David came to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there; and he said, Jehovah hath broken mine enemies before me, like the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baal-perazim.

ペリシテびとはその所に彼らの偶像を捨てて行ったので、ダビデとその従者たちはそれを運び去った。

And they left their images there; and David and his men took them away.

ペリシテびとが、ふたたび上ってきて、レパイムの谷に広がったので、

And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

ダビデは主に問うたが、主は言われた、「上ってはならない。彼らのうしろに回り、バルサムの木の前から彼らを襲いなさい。

And when David inquired of Jehovah, he said, Thou shalt not go up: make a circuit behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry-trees.

バルサムの木の上に行進の音が聞えたならば、あなたは奮い立たなければならない。その時、主があなたの前に出て、ペリシテびとの軍勢を撃たれるからである」。

And it shall be, when thou hearest the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry-trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself; for then is Jehovah gone out before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.

ダビデは、主が命じられたようにして、ペリシテびとを撃ち、ゲバからゲゼルに及んだ。

And David did so, as Jehovah commanded him, and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gezer.

第6章

ダビデは再びイスラエルのえり抜きの者三万人をことごとく集めた。

And David again gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.

そしてダビデは立って、自分と共にいるすべての民と共にバアレ・ユダへ行って、神の箱をそこからかき上ろうとした。この箱はケルビムの上に座しておられる万軍の主の名をもって呼ばれている。

And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him, from Baale-judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, which is called by the Name, even the name of Jehovah of hosts that sitteth [above] the cherubim.

彼らは神の箱を新しい車に載せて、山の上にあるアビナダブの家から運び出した。

And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in the hill: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart.

アビナダブの子たち、ウザとアヒオとが神の箱を載せた新しい車を指揮し、ウザは神の箱のかたわらに沿い、アヒオは箱の前に進んだ。

And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was in the hill, with the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.

ダビデとイスラエルの全家は琴と立琴と手鼓と鈴とシンバルとをもって歌をうたい、力をきわめて、主の前に踊った。

And David and all the house of Israel played before Jehovah with all manner of [instruments made of] fir-wood, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with castanets, and with cymbals.

彼らがナコンの打ち場にきた時、ウザは神の箱に手を伸べて、それを押えた。牛がつまずいたからである。

And when they came to the threshing-floor of Nacon, Uzzah put forth [his hand] to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen stumbled.

すると主はウザに向かって怒りを発し、彼が手を箱に伸べたので、彼をその場で撃たれた。彼は神の箱のかたわらで死んだ。

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.

主がウザを撃たれたので、ダビデは怒った。その所は今日までペレヅ・ウザと呼ばれている。

And David was displeased, because Jehovah had broken forth upon Uzzah; and he called that place Perez-uzzah, unto this day.

その日ダビデは主を恐れて言った、「どうして主の箱がわたしの所に来ることができようか」。

And David was afraid of Jehovah that day; and he said, How shall the ark of Jehovah come unto me?

ダビデは主の箱をダビデの町に入れることを好まず、これを移してガテびとオベデエドムの家に運ばせた。

So David would not remove the ark of Jehovah unto him into the city of David; but David carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

神の箱はガテびとオベデエドムの家に三か月とどまった。主はオベデエドムとその全家を祝福された。

And the ark of Jehovah remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months: and Jehovah blessed Obed-edom, and all his house.

しかしダビデ王は、「主が神の箱のゆえに、オベデエドムの家とそのすべての所有を祝福されている」と聞き、ダビデは行って、喜びをもって、神の箱をオベデエドムの家からダビデの町にかき上った。

And it was told king David, saying, Jehovah hath blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. And David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with joy.

主の箱をかく者が六歩進んだ時、ダビデは牛と肥えた物を犠牲としてささげた。

And it was so, that, when they that bare the ark of Jehovah had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.

そしてダビデは力をきわめて、主の箱の前で踊った。その時ダビデは亜麻布のエポデをつけていた。

And David danced before Jehovah with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

こうしてダビデとイスラエルの全家とは、喜びの叫びと角笛の音をもって、神の箱をかき上った。

So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of Jehovah with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

主の箱がダビデの町にはいった時、サウルの娘ミカルは窓からながめ、ダビデ王が主の前に舞い踊るのを見て、心のうちにダビデをさげすんだ。

And it was so, as the ark of Jehovah came into the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before Jehovah; and she despised him in her heart.

人々は主の箱をかき入れて、ダビデがそのために張った天幕の中のその場所に置いた。そしてダビデは燔祭と酬恩祭を主の前にささげた。

And they brought in the ark of Jehovah, and set it in its place, in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before Jehovah.

ダビデは燔祭と酬恩祭をささげ終った時、万軍の主の名によって民を祝福した。

And when David had made an end of offering the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings, he blessed the people in the name of Jehovah of hosts.

そしてすべての民、イスラエルの全民衆に、男にも女にも、おのおのパンの菓子一個、肉一きれ、ほしぶどう一かたまりを分け与えた。こうして民はみなおのおのその家に帰った。

And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, both to men and women, to every one a cake of bread, and a portion [of flesh], and a cake of raisins. So all the people departed every one to his house.

ダビデが家族を祝福しようとして帰ってきた時、サウルの娘ミカルはダビデを出迎えて言った、「きょうイスラエルの王はなんと威厳のあったことでしょう。いたずら者が、恥も知らず、その身を現すように、きょう家来たちのはしためらの前に自分の身を現されました」。

Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to-day, who uncovered himself to-day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!

ダビデはミカルに言った、「あなたの父よりも、またその全家よりも、むしろわたしを選んで、主の民イスラエルの君とせられた主の前に踊ったのだ。わたしはまた主の前に踊るであろう。

And David said unto Michal, [It was] before Jehovah, who chose me above thy father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of Jehovah, over Israel: therefore will I play before Jehovah.

わたしはこれよりももっと軽んじられるようにしよう。そしてあなたの目には卑しめられるであろう。しかしわたしは、あなたがさきに言った、はしためたちに誉を得るであろう」。

And I will be yet more vile than this, and will be base in mine own sight: but of the handmaids of whom thou hast spoken, of them shall I be had in honor.

こうしてサウルの娘ミカルは死ぬ日まで子供がなかった。

And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.

第7章

さて、王が自分の家に住み、また主が周囲の敵をことごとく打ち退けて彼に安息を賜わった時、

And it came to pass, when the king dwelt in his house, and Jehovah had given him rest from all his enemies round about,

王は預言者ナタンに言った、「見よ、今わたしは、香柏の家に住んでいるが、神の箱はなお幕屋のうちにある」。

that the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.

ナタンは王に言った、「主があなたと共におられますから、行って、すべてあなたの心にあるところを行いなさい」。

And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thy heart; for Jehovah is with thee.

その夜、主の言葉がナタンに臨んで言った、

And it came to pass the same night, that the word of Jehovah came unto Nathan, saying,

「行って、わたしのしもべダビデに言いなさい、『主はこう仰せられる。あなたはわたしの住む家を建てようとするのか。

Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah, Shalt thou build me a house for me to dwell in?

わたしはイスラエルの人々をエジプトから導き出した日から今日まで、家に住まわず、天幕をすまいとして歩んできた。

for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

わたしがイスラエルのすべての人々と共に歩んだすべての所で、わたしがわたしの民イスラエルを牧することを命じたイスラエルのさばきづかさのひとりに、ひと言でも「どうしてあなたがたはわたしのために香柏の家を建てないのか」と、言ったことがあるであろうか』。

In all places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel, spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar?

それゆえ、今あなたは、わたしのしもべダビデにこう言いなさい、『万軍の主はこう仰せられる。わたしはあなたを牧場から、羊に従っている所から取って、わたしの民イスラエルの君とし、

Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people, over Israel;

あなたがどこへ行くにも、あなたと共におり、あなたのすべての敵をあなたの前から断ち去った。わたしはまた地上の大いなる者の名のような大いなる名をあなたに得させよう。

and I have been with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a great name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth.

そしてわたしの民イスラエルのために一つの所を定めて、彼らを植えつけ、彼らを自分の所に住ませ、重ねて動くことのないようにするであろう。

And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first,

また前のように、わたしがわたしの民イスラエルの上にさばきづかさを立てた日からこのかたのように、悪人が重ねてこれを悩ますことはない。わたしはあなたのもろもろの敵を打ち退けて、あなたに安息を与えるであろう。主はまた「あなたのために家を造る」と仰せられる。

and [as] from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will cause thee to rest from all thine enemies. Moreover Jehovah telleth thee that Jehovah will make thee a house.

あなたが日が満ちて、先祖たちと共に眠る時、わたしはあなたの身から出る子を、あなたのあとに立てて、その王国を堅くするであろう。

When thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, that shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

彼はわたしの名のために家を建てる。わたしは長くその国の位を堅くしよう。

He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

わたしは彼の父となり、彼はわたしの子となるであろう。もし彼が罪を犯すならば、わたしは人のつえと人の子のむちをもって彼を懲らす。

I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;

しかしわたしはわたしのいつくしみを、わたしがあなたの前から除いたサウルから取り去ったように、彼からは取り去らない。

but my lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.

あなたの家と王国はわたしの前に長く保つであろう。あなたの位は長く堅うせられる』」。

And thy house and thy kingdom shall be made sure for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

ナタンはすべてこれらの言葉のように、またすべてこの幻のようにダビデに語った。

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

その時ダビデ王は、はいって主の前に座して言った、「主なる神よ、わたしがだれ、わたしの家が何であるので、あなたはこれまでわたしを導かれたのですか。

Then David the king went in, and sat before Jehovah; and he said, Who am I, O Lord Jehovah, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far?

主なる神よ、これはなおあなたの目には小さい事です。主なる神よ、あなたはまたしもべの家の、はるか後の事を語って、きたるべき代々のことを示されました。

And this was yet a small thing in thine eyes, O Lord Jehovah; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant`s house for a great while to come; and this [too] after the manner of men, O Lord Jehovah!

ダビデはこの上なにをあなたに申しあげることができましょう。主なる神よ、あなたはしもべを知っておられるのです。

And what can David say more unto thee? for thou knowest thy servant, O Lord Jehovah.

あなたの約束のゆえに、またあなたの心に従って、あなたはこのもろもろの大いなる事を行い、しもべにそれを知らせられました。

For thy word`s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou wrought all this greatness, to make thy servant know it.

主なる神よ、あなたは偉大です。それは、われわれがすべて耳に聞いたところによれば、あなたのような者はなく、またあなたのほかに神はないからです。

Wherefore thou art great, O Jehovah God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

地のどの国民が、あなたの民イスラエルのようでありましょうか。これは神が行って、自分のためにあがなって民とし、自らの名をあげられたもの、また彼らのために大いなる恐るべきことをなし、その民の前から国びととその神々とを追い出されたものです。

And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem unto himself for a people, and to make him a name, and to do great things for you, and terrible things for thy land, before thy people, whom thou redeemest to thee out of Egypt, [from] the nations and their gods?

そしてあなたの民イスラエルを永遠にあなたの民として、自分のために、定められました。主よ、あなたは彼らの神となられたのです。

And thou didst establish to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever; and thou, Jehovah, becamest their God.

主なる神よ、今あなたが、しもべとしもべの家とについて語られた言葉を長く堅うして、あなたの言われたとおりにしてください。

And now, O Jehovah God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, confirm thou it for ever, and do as thou hast spoken.

そうすれば、あなたの名はとこしえにあがめられて、『万軍の主はイスラエルの神である』と言われ、あなたのしもべダビデの家は、あなたの前に堅く立つことができましょう。

And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, Jehovah of hosts is God over Israel; and the house of thy servant David shall be established before thee.

万軍の主、イスラエルの神よ、あなたはしもべに示して、『おまえのために家を建てよう』と言われました。それゆえ、しもべはこの祈をあなたにささげる勇気を得たのです。

For thou, O Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee a house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.

主なる神よ、あなたは神にましまし、あなたの言葉は真実です。あなたはこの良き事をしもべに約束されました。

And now, O Lord Jehovah, thou art God, and thy words are truth, and thou hast promised this good thing unto thy servant:

どうぞ今、しもべの家を祝福し、あなたの前に長くつづかせてくださるように。主なる神よ、あなたがそれを言われたのです。どうぞあなたの祝福によって、しもべの家がながく祝福されますように」。

now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee; for thou, O Lord Jehovah, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.

第8章

この後ダビデはペリシテびとを撃って、これを征服した。ダビデはまたペリシテびとの手からメテグ・アンマを取った。

And after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took the bridle of the mother city out of the hand of the Philistines.

彼はまたモアブを撃ち、彼らを地に伏させ、なわをもって彼らを測った。すなわち二筋のなわをもって殺すべき者を測り、一筋のなわをもって生かしておく者を測った。そしてモアブびとは、ダビデのしもべとなって、みつぎを納めた。

And he smote Moab, and measured them with the line, making them to lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death, and one full line to keep alive. And the Moabites became servants to David, and brought tribute.

ダビデはまたレホブの子であるゾバの王ハダデゼルが、ユフラテ川のほとりにその勢力を回復しようとして行くところを撃った。

David smote also Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his dominion at the River.

そしてダビデは彼から騎兵千七百人、歩兵二万人を取った。ダビデはまた一百の戦車の馬を残して、そのほかの戦車の馬はみなその足の筋を切った。

And David took from him a thousand and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David hocked all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for a hundred chariots.

ダマスコのスリヤびとが、ゾバの王ハダデゼルを助けるためにきたので、ダビデはスリヤびと二万二千人を殺した。

And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succor Hadadezer king of Zobah, David smote of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.

そしてダビデはダマスコのスリヤに守備隊を置いた。スリヤびとは、ダビデのしもべとなって、みつぎを納めた。主はダビデにすべてその行く所で勝利を与えられた。

Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought tribute. And Jehovah gave victory to David whithersoever he went.

ダビデはハダデゼルのしもべらが持っていた金の盾を奪って、エルサレムに持ってきた。

And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

ダビデ王はまたハダデゼルの町、ベタとベロタイから、ひじょうに多くの青銅を取った。

And from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took exceeding much brass.

時にハマテの王トイは、ダビデがハダデゼルのすべての軍勢を撃ち破ったことを聞き、

And when Toi king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadadezer,

その子ヨラムをダビデ王のもとにつかわして、彼にあいさつし、かつ祝を述べさせた。ハダデゼルはかつてしばしばトイと戦いを交えたが、ダビデがハダデゼルと戦ってこれを撃ち破ったからである。ヨラムが銀の器と金の器と青銅の器を携えてきたので、

then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And [Joram] brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:

ダビデ王は征服したすべての国民から取ってささげた金銀と共にこれらをも主にささげた。

These also did king David dedicate unto Jehovah, with the silver and gold that he dedicated of all the nations which he subdued;

すなわちエドム、モアブ、アンモンの人々、ペリシテびと、アマレクから獲た物、およびゾバの王レホブの子ハダデゼルから獲たぶんどり物と共にこれをささげた。

of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

こうしてダビデは名声を得た。彼は帰ってきてから塩の谷でエドムびと一万八千人を撃ち殺した。

And David gat him a name when he returned from smiting the Syrians in the Valley of Salt, even eighteen thousand men.

そしてエドムに守備隊を置いた。すなわちエドムの全地に守備隊を置き、エドムびとは皆ダビデのしもべとなった。主はダビデにすべてその行く所で勝利を与えられた。

And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all the Edomites became servants to David. And Jehovah gave victory to David whithersoever he went.

こうしてダビデはイスラエルの全地を治め、そのすべての民に正義と公平を行った。

And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed justice and righteousness unto all his people.

ゼルヤの子ヨアブは軍の長、アヒルデの子ヨシャパテは史官、

And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;

アヒトブの子ザドクとアビヤタルの子アヒメレクは祭司、セラヤは書記官、

and Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were priests; and Seraiah was scribe;

エホヤダの子ベナヤはケレテびととペレテびとの長、ダビデの子たちは祭司であった。

and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada [was over] the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David`s sons were chief ministers.

第9章

時にダビデは言った、「サウルの家の人で、なお残っている者があるか。わたしはヨナタンのために、その人に恵みを施そう」。

And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan`s sake?

さて、サウルの家にヂバという名のしもべがあったが、人々が彼をダビデのもとに呼び寄せたので、王は彼に言った、「あなたがヂバか」。彼は言った、「しもべがそうです」。

And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba, and they called him unto David; and the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he.

王は言った、「サウルの家の人がまだ残っていませんか。わたしはその人に神の恵みを施そうと思う」。ヂバは王に言った、「ヨナタンの子がまだおります。あしなえです」。

And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, who is lame of his feet.

王は彼に言った、「その人はどこにいるのか」。ヂバは王に言った、「彼はロ・デバルのアンミエルの子マキルの家におります」。

And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.

ダビデ王は人をつかわして、ロ・デバルのアンミエルの子マキルの家から、彼を連れてこさせた。

Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar.

サウルの子ヨナタンの子であるメピボセテはダビデのもとにきて、ひれ伏して拝した。ダビデが、「メピボセテよ」と言ったので、彼は、「しもべは、ここにおります」と答えた。

And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came unto David, and fell on his face, and did obeisance. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold, thy servant!

ダビデは彼に言った、「恐れることはない。わたしはかならずあなたの父ヨナタンのためにあなたに恵みを施しましょう。あなたの父サウルの地をみなあなたに返します。またあなたは常にわたしの食卓で食事をしなさい」。

And David said unto him, Fear not; for I will surely show thee kindness for Jonathan thy father`s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.

彼は拝して言った、「あなたは、しもべを何とおぼしめして、死んだ犬のようなわたしを顧みられるのですか」。

And he did obeisance, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?

王はサウルのしもべヂバを呼んで言った、「すべてサウルとその家に属する物を皆、わたしはあなたの主人の子に与えた。

Then the king called to Ziba, Saul`s servant, and said unto him, All that pertained to Saul and to all his house have I given unto thy master`s son.

あなたと、あなたの子たちと、しもべたちとは、彼のために地を耕して、あなたの主人の子が食べる食物を取り入れなければならない。しかしあなたの主人の子メピボセテはいつもわたしの食卓で食事をするであろう」。ヂバには十五人の男の子と二十人のしもべがあった。

And thou shalt till the land for him, thou, and thy sons, and thy servants; and thou shalt bring in [the fruits], that thy master`s son may have bread to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master`s son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

ヂバは王に言った、「すべて王わが主君がしもべに命じられるとおりに、しもべはいたしましょう」。こうしてメピボセテは王の子のひとりのようにダビデの食卓で食事をした。

Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king commandeth his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, [said the king], he shall eat at my table, as one of the king`s sons.

メピボセテには小さい子があって、名をミカといった。そしてヂバの家に住んでいる者はみなメピボセテのしもべとなった。

And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth.

メピボセテはエルサレムに住んだ。彼がいつも王の食卓で食事をしたからである。彼は両足ともに、なえていた。

So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem; for he did eat continually at the king`s table. And he was lame in both his feet.

第10章

この後アンモンの人々の王が死んで、その子ハヌンがこれに代って王となった。

And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

そのときダビデは言った、「わたしはナハシの子ハヌンに、その父がわたしに恵みを施したように、恵みを施そう」。そしてダビデは彼を、その父のゆえに慰めようと、しもべをつかわした。ダビデのしもべたちはアンモンの人々の地に行ったが、

And David said, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness unto me. So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David`s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

アンモンの人々のつかさたちはその主君ハヌンに言った、「ダビデが慰める者をあなたのもとにつかわしたのは彼があなたの父を尊ぶためだと思われますか。ダビデがあなたのもとに、しもべたちをつかわしたのは、この町をうかがい、それを探って、滅ぼすためではありませんか」。

But the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, in that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

そこでハヌンはダビデのしもべたちを捕え、おのおの、ひげの半ばをそり落し、その着物を中ほどから断ち切り腰の所までにして、彼らを帰らせた。

So Hanun took David`s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

人々がこれをダビデに告げたので、ダビデは人をつかわして彼らを迎えさせた。その人々はひじょうに恥じたからである。そこで王は言った、「ひげがのびるまでエリコにとどまって、その後、帰りなさい」。

When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

アンモンの人々は自分たちがダビデに憎まれていることがわかったので、人をつかわして、ベテ・レホブのスリヤびととゾバのスリヤびととの歩兵二万人およびマアカの王とその一千人、トブの人一万二千人を雇い入れた。

And when the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.

ダビデはそれを聞いて、ヨアブと勇士の全軍をつかわしたので、

And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

アンモンの人々は出て、門の入口に戦いの備えをした。ゾバとレホブとのスリヤびと、およびトブとマアカの人々は別に野にいた。

And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

ヨアブは戦いが前後から自分に迫ってくるのを見て、イスラエルのえり抜きの兵士のうちから選んで、これをスリヤびとに対して備え、

Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:

そのほかの民を自分の兄弟アビシャイの手にわたして、アンモンの人々に対して備えさせ、

And the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.

そして言った、「もしスリヤびとがわたしに手ごわいときは、わたしを助けてください。もしアンモンの人々があなたに手ごわいときは、行ってあなたを助けましょう。

And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.

勇ましくしてください。われわれの民のため、われわれの神の町々のため、勇ましくしましょう。どうぞ主が良いと思われることをされるように」。

Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him good.

ヨアブが自分と一緒にいる民と共に、スリヤびとに向かって戦おうとして近づいたとき、スリヤびとは彼の前から逃げた。

So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.

アンモンの人々はスリヤびとが逃げるのを見て、彼らもまたアビシャイの前から逃げて町にはいった。そこでヨアブはアンモンの人々を撃つことをやめてエルサレムに帰った。

And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

しかしスリヤびとは自分たちのイスラエルに打ち敗られたのを見て、共に集まった。

And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

そしてハダデゼルは人をつかわし、ユフラテ川の向こう側にいるスリヤびとを率いてヘラムにこさせた。ハダデゼルの軍の長ショバクがこれを率いた。

And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer at their head.

この事がダビデに聞えたので、彼はイスラエルをことごとく集め、ヨルダンを渡ってヘラムにきた。スリヤびとはダビデに向かって備えをして彼と戦った。

And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

しかしスリヤびとがイスラエルの前から逃げたので、ダビデはスリヤびとの戦車の兵七百、騎兵四万を殺し、またその軍の長ショバクを撃ったので、彼はその所で死んだ。

And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians [the men of] seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, so that he died there.

ハダデゼルの家来であった王たちはみな、自分たちがイスラエルに打ち敗られたのを見て、イスラエルと和を講じ、これに仕えた。こうしてスリヤびとは恐れて再びアンモンの人々を助けることをしなかった。

And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

第11章

春になって、王たちが戦いに出るに及んで、ダビデはヨアブおよび自分と共にいる家来たち、並びにイスラエルの全軍をつかわした。彼らはアンモンの人々を滅ぼし、ラバを包囲した。しかしダビデはエルサレムにとどまっていた。

And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out [to battle], that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem.

さて、ある日の夕暮、ダビデは床から起き出て、王の家の屋上を歩いていたが、屋上から、ひとりの女がからだを洗っているのを見た。その女は非常に美しかった。

And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king`s house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

ダビデは人をつかわしてその女のことを探らせたが、ある人は言った、「これはエリアムの娘で、ヘテびとウリヤの妻バテシバではありませんか」。

And David send and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

そこでダビデは使者をつかわして、その女を連れてきた。女は彼の所にきて、彼はその女と寝た。（女は身の汚れを清めていたのである。）こうして女はその家に帰った。

And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned unto her house.

女は妊娠したので、人をつかわしてダビデに告げて言った、「わたしは子をはらみました」。

And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

そこでダビデはヨアブに、「ヘテびとウリヤをわたしの所につかわせ」と言ってやったので、ヨアブはウリヤをダビデの所につかわした。

And David sent to Joab, [saying], Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

ウリヤがダビデの所にきたので、ダビデは、ヨアブはどうしているか、民はどうしているか、戦いはうまくいっているかとたずねた。

And when Uriah was come unto him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.

そしてダビデはウリヤに言った、「あなたの家に行って、足を洗いなさい」。ウリヤは王の家を出ていったが、王の贈り物が彼の後に従った。

And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king`s house, and there followed him a mess [of food] from the king.

しかしウリヤは王の家の入口で主君の家来たちと共に寝て、自分の家に帰らなかった。

But Uriah slept at the door of the king`s house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.

人々がダビデに、「ウリヤは自分の家に帰りませんでした」と告げたので、ダビデはウリヤに言った、「旅から帰ってきたのではないか。どうして家に帰らなかったのか」。

And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thy house?

ウリヤはダビデに言った、「神の箱も、イスラエルも、ユダも、小屋の中に住み、わたしの主人ヨアブと、わが主君の家来たちが野のおもてに陣を取っているのに、わたしはどうして家に帰って食い飲みし、妻と寝ることができましょう。あなたは生きておられます。あなたの魂は生きています。わたしはこの事をいたしません」。

And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

ダビデはウリヤに言った、「きょうも、ここにとどまりなさい。わたしはあす、あなたを去らせましょう」。そこでウリヤはその日と次の日エルサレムにとどまった。

And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.

ダビデは彼を招いて自分の前で食い飲みさせ、彼を酔わせた。夕暮になって彼は出ていって、その床に、主君の家来たちと共に寝た。そして自分の家には下って行かなかった。

And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

朝になってダビデはヨアブにあてた手紙を書き、ウリヤの手に託してそれを送った。

And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

彼はその手紙に、「あなたがたはウリヤを激しい戦いの最前線に出し、彼の後から退いて、彼を討死させよ」と書いた。

And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.

ヨアブは町を囲んでいたので、勇士たちがいると知っていた場所にウリヤを置いた。

And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men were.

町の人々が出てきてヨアブと戦ったので、民のうち、ダビデの家来たちにも、倒れるものがあり、ヘテびとウリヤも死んだ。

And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

ヨアブは人をつかわして戦いのことをつぶさにダビデに告げた。

Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

ヨアブはその使者に命じて言った、「あなたが戦いのことをつぶさに王に語り終ったとき、

and he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling all the things concerning the war unto the king,

もし王が怒りを起して、『あなたがたはなぜ戦おうとしてそんなに町に近づいたのか。彼らが城壁の上から射るのを知らなかったのか。

it shall be that, if the king`s wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore went ye so nigh unto the city to fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?

エルベセテの子アビメレクを撃ったのはだれか。ひとりの女が城壁の上から石うすの上石を投げて彼をテベツで殺したのではなかったか。あなたがたはなぜそんなに城壁に近づいたのか』と言われたならば、その時あなたは、『あなたのしもべ、ヘテびとウリヤもまた死にました』と言いなさい」。

who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast an upper millstone upon him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? why went ye so nigh the wall? then shalt thou say, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

こうして使者は行き、ダビデのもとにきて、ヨアブが言いつかわしたことをことごとく告げた。

So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.

使者はダビデに言った、「敵はわれわれよりも有利な位置を占め、出てきてわれわれを野で攻めましたが、われわれは町の入口まで彼らを追い返しました。

And the messenger said unto David, The men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entrance of the gate.

その時、射手どもは城壁からあなたの家来たちを射ましたので、王の家来のある者は死に、また、あなたの家来ヘテびとウリヤも死にました」。

And the shooters shot at thy servants from off the wall; and some of the king`s servants are dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

ダビデは使者に言った、「あなたはヨアブにこう言いなさい、『この事で心配することはない。つるぎはこれをも彼をも同じく滅ぼすからである。強く町を攻めて戦い、それを攻め落しなさい』と。そしてヨアブを励ましなさい」。

Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another; make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

ウリヤの妻は夫ウリヤが死んだことを聞いて、夫のために悲しんだ。

And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.

その喪が過ぎた時、ダビデは人をつかわして彼女を自分の家に召し入れた。彼女は彼の妻となって男の子を産んだ。しかしダビデがしたこの事は主を怒らせた。

And when the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Jehovah.

第12章

主はナタンをダビデにつかわされたので、彼はダビデの所にきて言った、「ある町にふたりの人があって、ひとりは富み、ひとりは貧しかった。

And Jehovah sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

富んでいる人は非常に多くの羊と牛を持っていたが、

The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds;

貧しい人は自分が買った一頭の小さい雌の小羊のほかは何も持っていなかった。彼がそれを育てたので、その小羊は彼および彼の子供たちと共に成長し、彼の食物を食べ、彼のわんから飲み、彼のふところで寝て、彼にとっては娘のようであった。

but the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own morsel, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

時に、ひとりの旅びとが、その富んでいる人のもとにきたが、自分の羊または牛のうちから一頭を取って、自分の所にきた旅びとのために調理することを惜しみ、その貧しい人の小羊を取って、これを自分の所にきた人のために調理した」。

And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him, but took the poor man`s lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

ダビデはその人の事をひじょうに怒ってナタンに言った、「主は生きておられる。この事をしたその人は死ぬべきである。

And David`s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As Jehovah liveth, the man that hath done this is worthy to die:

かつその人はこの事をしたため、またあわれまなかったため、その小羊を四倍にして償わなければならない」。

and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

ナタンはダビデに言った、「あなたがその人です。イスラエルの神、主はこう仰せられる、『わたしはあなたに油を注いでイスラエルの王とし、あなたをサウルの手から救いだし、

And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

あなたに主人の家を与え、主人の妻たちをあなたのふところに与え、またイスラエルとユダの家をあなたに与えた。もし少なかったならば、わたしはもっと多くのものをあなたに増し加えたであろう。

and I gave thee thy master`s house, and thy master`s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added unto thee such and such things.

どうしてあなたは主の言葉を軽んじ、その目の前に悪事をおこなったのですか。あなたはつるぎをもってヘテびとウリヤを殺し、その妻をとって自分の妻とした。すなわちアンモンの人々のつるぎをもって彼を殺した。

Wherefore hast thou despised the word of Jehovah, to do that which is evil in his sight? thou hast smitten Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

あなたがわたしを軽んじてヘテびとウリヤの妻をとり、自分の妻としたので、つるぎはいつまでもあなたの家を離れないであろう』。

Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house, because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

主はこう仰せられる、『見よ、わたしはあなたの家からあなたの上に災を起すであろう。わたしはあなたの目の前であなたの妻たちを取って、隣びとに与えるであろう。その人はこの太陽の前で妻たちと一緒に寝るであろう。

Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house; and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

あなたはひそかにそれをしたが、わたしは全イスラエルの前と、太陽の前にこの事をするのである』」。

For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

ダビデはナタンに言った、「わたしは主に罪をおかしました」。ナタンはダビデに言った、「主もまたあなたの罪を除かれました。あなたは死ぬことはないでしょう。

And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against Jehovah. And Nathan said unto David, Jehovah also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

しかしあなたはこの行いによって大いに主を侮ったので、あなたに生れる子供はかならず死ぬでしょう」。

Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of Jehovah to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

こうしてナタンは家に帰った。さて主は、ウリヤの妻がダビデに産んだ子を撃たれたので、病気になった。

And Nathan departed unto his house. And Jehovah struck the child that Uriah`s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.

ダビデはその子のために神に嘆願した。すなわちダビデは断食して、へやにはいり終夜地に伏した。

David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.

ダビデの家の長老たちは、彼のかたわらに立って彼を地から起そうとしたが、彼は起きようとはせず、また彼らと一緒に食事をしなかった。

And the elders of his house arose, [and stood] beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

七日目にその子は死んだ。ダビデの家来たちはその子が死んだことをダビデに告げるのを恐れた。それは彼らが、「見よ、子のなお生きている間に、われわれが彼に語ったのに彼はその言葉を聞きいれなかった。どうして彼にその子の死んだことを告げることができようか。彼は自らを害するかも知れない」と思ったからである。

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he hearkened not unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead!

しかしダビデは、家来たちが互にささやき合うのを見て、その子の死んだのを悟り、家来たちに言った、「子は死んだのか」。彼らは言った、「死なれました」。

But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.

そこで、ダビデは地から起き上がり、身を洗い、油をぬり、その着物を替えて、主の家にはいって拝した。そののち自分の家に行き、求めて自分のために食物を備えさせて食べた。

Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel; and he came into the house of Jehovah, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.

家来たちは彼に言った、「あなたのなさったこの事はなんでしょうか。あなたは子の生きている間はその子のために断食して泣かれました。しかし子が死ぬと、あなたは起きて食事をなさいました」。

Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.

ダビデは言った、「子の生きている間に、わたしが断食して泣いたのは、『主がわたしをあわれんで、この子を生かしてくださるかも知れない』と思ったからです。

And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who knoweth whether Jehovah will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?

しかし今は死んだので、わたしはどうして断食しなければならないでしょうか。わたしは再び彼をかえらせることができますか。わたしは彼の所に行くでしょうが、彼はわたしの所に帰ってこないでしょう」。

But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.

ダビデは妻バテシバを慰め、彼女の所にはいって、彼女と共に寝たので、彼女は男の子を産んだ。ダビデはその名をソロモンと名づけた。主はこれを愛された。

And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon. And Jehovah loved him;

そして預言者ナタンをつかわし、命じてその名をエデデアと呼ばせられた。

and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, for Jehovah`s sake.

さてヨアブはアンモンの人々のラバを攻めて王の町を取った。

Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

ヨアブは使者をダビデにつかわして言った、「わたしはラバを攻めて水の町を取りました。

And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah; yea, I have taken the city of waters.

あなたは今、残りの民を集め、この町に向かって陣をしき、これを取りなさい。わたしがこの町を取って、人がわたしの名をもって、これを呼ぶようにならないためです」。

Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.

そこでダビデは民をことごとく集めてラバへ行き、攻めてこれを取った。

And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.

そしてダビデは彼らの王の冠をその頭から取りはなした。それは金で重さは一タラントであった。宝石がはめてあり、それをダビデの頭に置いた。ダビデはその町からぶんどり物を非常に多く持ち出した。

And he took the crown of their king from off his head; and the weight thereof was a talent of gold, and [in it were] precious stones; and it was set on David`s head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city, exceeding much.

またダビデはそのうちの民を引き出して、彼らをのこぎりや、鉄のつるはし、鉄のおのを使う仕事につかせ、また、れんが造りの労役につかせた。彼はアンモンの人々のすべての町にこのようにした。そしてダビデと民とは皆エルサレムに帰った。

And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.

第13章

さてダビデの子アブサロムには名をタマルという美しい妹があったが、その後ダビデの子アムノンはこれを恋した。

And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

アムノンは妹タマルのために悩んでついにわずらった。それはタマルが処女であって、アムノンは彼女に何事もすることができないと思ったからである。

And Amnon was so vexed that he fell sick because of his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything unto her.

ところがアムノンにはひとりの友だちがあった。名をヨナダブといい、ダビデの兄弟シメアの子である。ヨナダブはひじょうに賢い人であった。

But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David`s brother; and Jonadab was a very subtle man.

彼はアムノンに言った、「王子よ、あなたは、どうして朝ごとに、そんなにやせ衰えるのですか。わたしに話さないのですか」。アムノンは彼に言った、「わたしは兄弟アブサロムの妹タマルを恋しているのです」。

And he said unto him, Why, O son of the king, art thou thus lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom`s sister.

ヨナダブは彼に言った、「あなたは病と偽り、寝床に横たわって、あなたの父がきてあなたを見るとき彼に言いなさい、『どうぞ、わたしの妹タマルをこさせ、わたしの所に食物を運ばせてください。そして彼女がわたしの目の前で食物をととのえ、彼女の手からわたしが食べることのできるようにさせてください』」。

And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and feign thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, Let my sister Tamar come, I pray thee, and give me bread to eat, and dress the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it from her hand.

そこでアムノンは横になって病と偽ったが、王がきて彼を見た時、アムノンは王に言った、「どうぞわたしの妹タマルをこさせ、わたしの目の前で二つの菓子を作らせて、彼女の手からわたしが食べることのできるようにしてください」。

So Amnon lay down, and feigned himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, Let her sister Tamar come, I pray thee, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.

ダビデはタマルの家に人をつかわして言わせた、「あなたの兄アムノンの家へ行って、彼のために食物をととのえなさい」。

Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon`s house, and dress him food.

そこでタマルはその兄アムノンの家へ行ったところ、アムノンは寝ていた。タマルは粉を取って、これをこね、彼の目の前で、菓子を作り、その菓子を焼き、

So Tamar went to her brother Amnon`s house; and he was laid down. And she took dough, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.

なべを取って彼の前にそれをあけた。しかし彼は食べることを拒んだ。そしてアムノンは、「みな、わたしを離れて出てください」と言ったので、皆、彼を離れて出た。

And she took the pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.

アムノンはタマルに言った、「食物を寝室に持ってきてください。わたしはあなたの手から食べます」。そこでタマルは自分の作った菓子をとって、寝室にはいり兄アムノンの所へ持っていった。

And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from thy hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.

タマルが彼に食べさせようとして近くに持って行った時、彼はタマルを捕えて彼女に言った、「妹よ、来て、わたしと寝なさい」。

And when she had brought them near unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come, lie with me, my sister.

タマルは言った、「いいえ、兄上よ、わたしをはずかしめてはなりません。このようなことはイスラエルでは行われません。この愚かなことをしてはなりません。

And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.

わたしの恥をわたしはどこへ持って行くことができましょう。あなたはイスラエルの愚か者のひとりとなるでしょう。それゆえ、どうぞ王に話してください。王がわたしをあなたに与えないことはないでしょう」。

And I, whither shall I carry my shame? and as for thee, thou wilt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.

しかしアムノンは彼女の言うことを聞こうともせず、タマルよりも強かったので、タマルをはずかしめてこれと共に寝た。

Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice; but being stronger than she, he forced her, and lay with her.

それからアムノンは、ひじょうに深くタマルを憎むようになった。彼女を憎む憎しみは、彼女を恋した恋よりも大きかった。アムノンは彼女に言った、「立って、行きなさい」。

Then Amnon hated her with exceeding great hatred; for the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.

タマルはアムノンに言った、「いいえ、兄上よ、わたしを返すことは、あなたがさきにわたしになさった事よりも大きい悪です」。しかしアムノンは彼女の言うことを聞こうともせず、

And she said unto him, Not so, because this great wrong in putting me forth is [worse] than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her.

彼に仕えている若者を呼んで言った、「この女をわたしの所から外におくり出し、そのあとに戸を閉ざすがよい」。

Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.

この時、タマルは長そでの着物を着ていた。昔、王の姫たちの処女である者はこのような着物を着たからである。アムノンのしもべは彼女を外に出して、そのあとに戸を閉ざした。

And she had a garment of divers colors upon her; for with such robes were the king`s daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.

タマルは灰を頭にかぶり、着ていた長そでの着物を裂き、手を頭にのせて、叫びながら去って行った。

And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colors that was on her; and she laid her hand on her head, and went her way, crying aloud as she went.

兄アブサロムは彼女に言った、「兄アムノンがあなたと一緒にいたのか。しかし妹よ、今は黙っていなさい。彼はあなたの兄です。この事を心にとめなくてよろしい」。こうしてタマルは兄アブサロムの家に寂しく住んでいた。

And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but now hold thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; take not this thing to heart. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom`s house.

ダビデ王はこれらの事をことごとく聞いて、ひじょうに怒った。

But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth.

アブサロムはアムノンに良いことも悪いことも語ることをしなかった。それはアムノンがアブサロムの妹タマルをはずかしめたので、アブサロムが彼を憎んでいたからである。

And Absalom spake unto Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

満二年の後、アブサロムはエフライムの近くにあるバアル・ハゾルで羊の毛を切らせていた時、王の子たちをことごとく招いた。

And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king`s sons.

そしてアブサロムは王のもとにきて言った、「見よ、しもべは羊の毛を切らせております。どうぞ王も王の家来たちも、しもべと共にきてください」。

And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheep-shearers; let the king, I pray thee, and his servants go with thy servant.

王はアブサロムに言った、「いいえ、わが子よ、われわれが皆行ってはならない。あなたの重荷になるといけないから」。アブサロムはダビデにしいて願った。しかしダビデは行くことを承知せず彼に祝福を与えた。

And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him.

そこでアブサロムは言った、「それでは、どうぞわたしの兄アムノンをわれわれと共に行かせてください」。王は彼に言った、「どうして彼があなたと共に行かなければならないのか」。

Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?

しかしアブサロムは彼にしいて願ったので、ついにアムノンと王の子たちを皆、アブサロムと共に行かせた。

But Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king`s sons go with him.

そこでアブサロムは若者たちに命じて言った、「アムノンが酒を飲んで、心楽しくなった時を見すまし、わたしがあなたがたに、『アムノンを撃て』と言う時、彼を殺しなさい。恐れることはない。わたしが命じるのではないか。雄々しくしなさい。勇ましくしなさい」。

And Absalom commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now, when Amnon`s heart is merry with wine; and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon, then kill him; fear not; have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

アブサロムの若者たちはアブサロムの命じたようにアムノンにおこなったので、王の子たちは皆立って、おのおのその騾馬に乗って逃げた。

And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king`s sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled.

彼らがまだ着かないうちに、「アブサロムは王の子たちをことごとく殺して、ひとりも残っている者がない」という知らせがダビデに達したので、

And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that the tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king`s sons, and there is not one of them left.

王は立ち、その着物を裂いて、地に伏した。そのかたわらに立っていた家来たちも皆その着物を裂いた。

Then the king arose, and rent his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.

しかしダビデの兄弟シメアの子ヨナダブは言った、「わが主よ、王の子たちである若者たちがみな殺されたと、お考えになってはなりません。アムノンだけが死んだのです。これは彼がアブサロムの妹タマルをはずかしめた日から、アブサロムの命によって定められていたことなのです。

And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David`s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men the king`s sons; for Amnon only is dead; for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.

それゆえ、わが主、王よ、王の子たちが皆死んだと思って、この事を心にとめられてはなりません。アムノンだけが死んだのです」。

Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king`s sons are dead; for Amnon only is dead.

アブサロムはのがれた。時に見張りをしていた若者が目をあげて見ると、山のかたわらのホロナイムの道から多くの民の来るのが見えた。

But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill-side behind him.

ヨナダブは王に言った、「見よ、王の子たちがきました。しもべの言ったとおりです」。

And Jonadab said unto the king, Behold, the king`s sons are come: as thy servant said, so it is.

彼が語ることを終った時、王の子たちはきて声をあげて泣いた。王もその家来たちも皆、非常にはげしく泣いた。

And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king`s sons came, and lifted up their voice, and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.

しかしアブサロムはのがれて、ゲシュルの王アミホデの子タルマイのもとに行った。ダビデは日々その子のために悲しんだ。

But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai the son of Ammihur, king of Geshur. And [David] mourned for his son every day.

アブサロムはのがれてゲシュルに行き、三年の間そこにいた。

So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.

王は心に、アブサロムに会うことを、せつに望んだ。アムノンは死んでしまい、ダビデが彼のことはあきらめていたからである。

And [the soul of] king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.

第14章

ゼルヤの子ヨアブは王の心がアブサロムに向かっているのを知った。

Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king`s heart was toward Absalom.

そこでヨアブはテコアに人をつかわして、そこからひとりの賢い女を連れてこさせ、その女に言った、「あなたは悲しみのうちにある人をよそおって、喪服を着、油を身に塗らず、死んだ人のために長いあいだ悲しんでいる女のように、よそおって、

And Joab sent to Tekoa, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on mourning apparel, I pray thee, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that hath a long time mourned for the dead:

王のもとに行き、しかじかと彼に語りなさい」。こうしてヨアブはその言葉を彼女の口に授けた。

and go in to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.

テコアの女は王のもとに行き、地に伏して拝し、「王よ、お助けください」と言った。

And when the woman of Tekoa spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.

王は女に言った、「どうしたのか」。女は言った、「まことにわたしは寡婦でありまして、夫は死にました。

And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, Of a truth I am a widow, and my husband is dead.

つかえめにはふたりの子どもがあり、ふたりは野で争いましたが、だれも彼らを引き分ける者がなかったので、ひとりはついに他の者を撃って殺しました。

And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and killed him.

すると全家族がつかえめに逆らい立って、『兄弟を撃ち殺した者を引き渡たすがよい。われわれは彼が殺したその兄弟の命のために彼を殺そう』と言い、彼らは世継をも殺そうとしました。こうして彼らは残っているわたしの炭火を消して、わたしの夫の名をも、跡継をも、地のおもてにとどめないようにしようとしています」。

And, behold, the whole family is risen against thy handmaid, and they say, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he slew, and so destroy the heir also. Thus will they quench my coal which is left, and will leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the face of the earth.

王は女に言った、「家に帰りなさい。わたしはあなたのことについて命令を下します」。

And the king said unto the woman, Go to thy house, and I will give charge concerning thee.

テコアの女は王に言った、「わが主、王よ、わたしとわたしの父の家にその罪を帰してください。どうぞ王と王の位には罪がありませんように」。

And the woman of Tekoa said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father`s house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.

王は言った、「もしあなたに何か言う者があれば、わたしの所に連れてきなさい。そうすれば、その人は重ねてあなたに触れることはないでしょう」。

And the king said, Whosoever saith aught unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.

女は言った、「どうぞ王が、あなたの神、主をおぼえて、血の報復をする者に重ねて滅ぼすことをさせず、わたしの子の殺されることのないようにしてください」。王は言った、「主は生きておられる。あなたの子の髪の毛一筋も地に落ちることはないでしょう」。

Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember Jehovah thy God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As Jehovah liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.

女は言った、「どうぞ、つかえめにひと言、わが主、王に言わせてください」。ダビデは言った、「言いなさい」。

Then the woman said, Let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak a word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.

女は言った、「あなたは、それならばどうして、神の民に向かってこのような事を図られたのですか。王は今この事を言われたことによって自分を罪ある者とされています。それは王が追放された者を帰らせられないからです。

And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou devised such a thing against the people of God? for in speaking this word the king is as one that is guilty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished one.

わたしたちはみな死ななければなりません。地にこぼれた水の再び集めることのできないのと同じです。しかし神は、追放された者が捨てられないように、てだてを設ける人の命を取ることはなさいません。

For we must needs die, and are as water split on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God take away life, but deviseth means, that he that is banished be not an outcast from him.

わたしがこの事を王、わが主に言おうとして来たのは、わたしが民を恐れたからです。つかえめは、こう思ったのです、『王に申し上げよう。王は、はしための願いのようにしてくださるかもしれない。

Now therefore seeing that I am come to speak this word unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.

王は聞いてくださる。わたしとわたしの子を共に滅ぼして神の嗣業から離れさせようとする人の手から、はしためを救い出してくださるのだから』。

For the king will hear, to deliver his servant out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.

つかえめはまた、こう思ったのです、『王、わが主の言葉はわたしを安心させるであろう』と。それは王、わが主は神の使のように善と悪を聞きわけられるからです。どうぞあなたの神、主があなたと共におられますように」。

Then thy handmaid said, Let, I pray thee, the word of my lord the king be comfortable; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: and Jehovah thy God be with thee.

王は女に答えて言った、「わたしが問うことに隠さず答えてください」。女は言った、「王、わが主よ、どうぞ言ってください」。

Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, aught that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.

王は言った、「このすべての事において、ヨアブの手があなたと共にありますか」。女は答えた、「あなたはたしかに生きておられます。王、わが主よ、すべて王、わが主の言われた事から人は右にも左にも曲ることはできません。わたしに命じたのは、あなたのしもべヨアブです。彼がつかえめの口に、これらの言葉をことごとく授けたのです。

And the king said, Is the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from aught that my lord the king hath spoken; for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thy handmaid;

事のなりゆきを変えるため、あなたのしもべヨアブがこの事をしたのです。わが君には神の使の知恵のような知恵があって、地の上のすべてのことを知っておられます」。

to change the face of the matter hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.

そこで王はヨアブに言った、「この事を許す。行って、若者アブサロムを連れ帰るがよい」。

And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom back.

ヨアブは地にひれ伏して拝し、王を祝福した。そしてヨアブは言った、「わが主、王よ、王がしもべの願いを許されたので、きょうしもべは、あなたの前に恵みを得たことを知りました」。

And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and did obeisance, and blessed the king: and Joab said, To-day thy servant knoweth that I have found favor in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath performed the request of his servant.

そこでヨアブは立ってゲシュルに行き、アブサロムをエルサレムに連れてきた。

So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

王は言った、「彼を自分の家に引きこもらせるがよい。わたしの顔を見てはならない」。こうしてアブサロムは自分の家に引きこもり、王の顔を見なかった。

And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, but let him not see my face. So Absalom turned to his own house, and saw not the king`s face.

さて全イスラエルのうちにアブサロムのように、美しさのためほめられた人はなかった。その足の裏から頭の頂まで彼には傷がなかった。

Now in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

アブサロムがその頭を刈る時、その髪の毛をはかったが、王のはかりで二百シケルあった。毎年の終りにそれを刈るのを常とした。それが重くなると、彼はそれを刈ったのである。

And when he cut the hair of his head (now it was at every year`s end that he cut it; because it was heavy on him, therefore he cut it); he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, after the king`s weight.

アブサロムに三人のむすこと、タマルという名のひとりの娘が生れた。タマルは美しい女であった。

And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.

こうしてアブサロムは満二年の間エルサレムに住んだが、王の顔を見なかった。

And Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem; and he saw not the king`s face.

そこでアブサロムはヨアブを王のもとにつかわそうとして、ヨアブの所に人をつかわしたが、ヨアブは彼の所にこようとはしなかった。彼は再び人をつかわしたがヨアブはこようとはしなかった。

Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king; but he would not come to him: and he sent again a second time, but he would not come.

そこでアブサロムはその家来に言った、「ヨアブの畑はわたしの畑の隣にあって、そこに大麦がある。行ってそれに火を放ちなさい」。アブサロムの家来たちはその畑に火を放った。

Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab`s field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom`s servants set the field on fire.

ヨアブは立ってアブサロムの家にきて彼に言った、「どうしてあなたの家来たちはわたしの畑に火を放ったのですか」。

Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?

アブサロムはヨアブに言った、「わたしはあなたに人をつかわして、ここへ来るようにと言ったのです。あなたを王のもとにつかわし、『なんのためにわたしはゲシュルからきたのですか。なおあそこにいたならば良かったでしょうに』と言わせようとしたのです。それゆえ今わたしに王の顔を見させてください。もしわたしに罪があるなら王にわたしを殺させてください」。

And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it were better for me to be there still. Now therefore let me see the king`s face; and if there be iniquity in me, let him kill me.

そこでヨアブは王のもとへ行って告げたので、王はアブサロムを召しよせた。彼は王のもとにきて、王の前に地にひれ伏して拝した。王はアブサロムに口づけした。

So Joab came to the king, and told him; and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.

第15章

この後、アブサロムは自分のために戦車と馬、および自分の前に駆ける者五十人を備えた。

And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him.

アブサロムは早く起きて門の道のかたわらに立つのを常とした。人が訴えがあって王に裁判を求めに来ると、アブサロムはその人を呼んで言った、「あなたはどの町の者ですか」。その人が「しもべはイスラエルのこれこれの部族のものです」と言うと、

And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that, when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.

アブサロムはその人に言った、「見よ、あなたの要求は良く、また正しい。しかしあなたのことを聞くべき人は王がまだ立てていない」。

And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.

アブサロムはまた言った、「ああ、わたしがこの地のさばきびとであったならばよいのに。そうすれば訴え、または申立てのあるものは、皆わたしの所にきて、わたしはこれに公平なさばきを行うことができるのだが」。

Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!

そして人が彼に敬礼しようとして近づくと、彼は手を伸べ、その人を抱きかかえて口づけした。

And it was so, that, when any man came nigh to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him.

アブサロムは王にさばきを求めて来るすべてのイスラエルびとにこのようにした。こうしてアブサロムはイスラエルの人々の心を自分のものとした。

And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

そして四年の終りに、アブサロムは王に言った、「どうぞわたしを行かせ、ヘブロンで、かつて主に立てた誓いを果させてください。

And it came to pass at the end of forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto Jehovah, in Hebron.

それは、しもべがスリヤのゲシュルにいた時、誓いを立てて、『もし主がほんとうにわたしをエルサレムに連れ帰ってくださるならば、わたしは主に礼拝をささげます』と言ったからです」。

For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If Jehovah shall indeed bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve Jehovah.

王が彼に、「安らかに行きなさい」と言ったので、彼は立ってヘブロンへ行った。

And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.

そしてアブサロムは密使をイスラエルのすべての部族のうちにつかわして言った、「ラッパの響きを聞くならば、『アブサロムがヘブロンで王となった』と言いなさい」。

But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom is king in Hebron.

二百人の招かれた者がエルサレムからアブサロムと共に行った。彼らは何心なく行き、何事をも知らなかった。

And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were invited, and went in their simplicity; and they knew not anything.

アブサロムは犠牲をささげている間に人をつかわして、ダビデの議官ギロびとアヒトペルを、その町ギロから呼び寄せた。徒党は強く、民はしだいにアブサロムに加わった。

And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David`s counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.

ひとりの使者がダビデのところにきて、「イスラエルの人々の心はアブサロムに従いました」と言った。

And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.

ダビデは、自分と一緒にエルサレムにいるすべての家来に言った、「立て、われわれは逃げよう。そうしなければアブサロムの前からのがれることはできなくなるであろう。急いで行くがよい。さもないと、彼らが急ぎ追いついて、われわれに害をこうむらせ、つるぎをもって町を撃つであろう」。

And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for else none of us shall escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring down evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.

王のしもべたちは王に言った、「しもべたちは、わが主君、王の選ばれる所をすべて行います」。

And the king`s servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall choose.

こうして王は出て行き、その全家は彼に従った。王は十人のめかけを残して家を守らせた。

And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, that were concubines, to keep the house.

王は出て行き、民はみな彼に従った。彼らは町はずれの家にとどまった。

And the king went forth, and all the people after him; and they tarried in Beth-merhak.

彼のしもべたちは皆、彼のかたわらを進み、すべてのケレテびとと、すべてのペレテびと、および彼に従ってガテからきた六百人のガテびとは皆、王の前に進んだ。

And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men that came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

時に王はガテびとイッタイに言った、「どうしてあなたもまた、われわれと共に行くのですか。あなたは帰って王と共にいなさい。あなたは外国人で、また自分の国から追放された者だからです。

Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return, and abide with the king: for thou art a foreigner, and also an exile; [return] to thine own place.

あなたは、きのう来たばかりです。わたしは自分の行く所を知らずに行くのに、どうしてきょう、あなたを、われわれと共にさまよわせてよいでしょう。あなたは帰りなさい。あなたの兄弟たちも連れて帰りなさい。どうぞ主が恵みと真実をあなたに示してくださるように」。

Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us, seeing I go whither I may? return thou, and take back thy brethren; mercy and truth be with thee.

しかしイッタイは王に答えた、「主は生きておられる。わが君、王は生きておられる。わが君、王のおられる所に、死ぬも生きるも、しもべもまたそこにおります」。

And Ittai answered the king, and said, As Jehovah liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether for death or for life, even there also will thy servant be.

ダビデはイッタイに言った、「では進んで行きなさい」。そこでガテびとイッタイは進み、また彼のすべての従者および彼と共にいた子どもたちも皆、進んだ。

And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.

国中みな大声で泣いた。民はみな進んだ。王もまたキデロンの谷を渡って進み、民は皆進んで荒野の方に向かった。

And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.

そしてアビヤタルも上ってきた。見よ、ザドクおよび彼と共にいるすべてのレビびともまた、神の契約の箱をかいてきた。彼らは神の箱をおろして、民がことごとく町を出てしまうのを待った。

And, lo, Zadok also [came], and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.

そこで王はザドクに言った、「神の箱を町にかきもどすがよい。もしわたしが主の前に恵みを得るならば、主はわたしを連れ帰って、わたしにその箱とそのすまいとを見させてくださるであろう。

And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favor in the eyes of Jehovah, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation:

しかしもし主が、『わたしはおまえを喜ばない』とそう言われるのであれば、どうぞ主が良しと思われることをわたしにしてくださるように。わたしはここにおります」。

but if he say thus, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.

王はまた祭司ザドクに言った、「見よ、あなたもアビヤタルも、ふたりの子たち、すなわちあなたの子アヒマアズとアビヤタルの子ヨナタンを連れて、安らかに町に帰りなさい。

The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art thou [not] a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.

わたしはあなたがたから言葉があって知らせをうけるまで、荒野の渡し場にとどまります」。

See, I will tarry at the fords of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.

そこでザドクとアビヤタルは神の箱をエルサレムにかきもどり、そこにとどまった。

Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they abode there.

ダビデはオリブ山の坂道を登ったが、登る時に泣き、その頭をおおい、はだしで行った。彼と共にいる民もみな頭をおおって登り、泣きながら登った。

And David went up by the ascent of the [mount of] Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered, and went barefoot: and all the people that were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

時に、「アヒトペルがアブサロムと共謀した者のうちにいる」とダビデに告げる人があったのでダビデは言った、「主よ、どうぞアヒトペルの計略を愚かなものにしてください」。

And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Jehovah, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

ダビデが山の頂にある神を礼拝する場所にきた時、見よ、アルキびとホシャイはその上着を裂き、頭に土をかぶり、来てダビデを迎えた。

And it came to pass, that, when David was come to the top [of the ascent], where God was worshipped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head.

ダビデは彼に言った、「もしあなたがわたしと共に進むならば、わたしの重荷となるであろう。

And David said unto him, If thou passest on with me, then thou wilt be a burden unto me:

しかしもしあなたが町に帰ってアブサロムに向かい、『王よ、わたしはあなたのしもべとなります。わたしがこれまで、あなたの父のしもべであったように、わたしは今あなたのしもべとなります』と言うならば、あなたはわたしのためにアヒトペルの計略を破ることができるであろう。

but if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father`s servant in time past, so will I now be thy servant; then wilt thou defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.

祭司たち、ザドクとアビヤタルとは、あなたと共にあそこにいるではないか。それゆえ、あなたは王の家から聞くことをことごとく祭司たち、ザドクとアビヤタルとに告げなさい。

And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king`s house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.

あそこには彼らと共にそのふたりの子たち、すなわちザドクの子アヒマアズとアビヤタルの子ヨナタンとがいる。あなたがたは聞いたことをことごとく彼らの手によってわたしに通報しなさい」。

Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok`s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar`s son; and by them ye shall send unto me everything that ye shall hear.

そこでダビデの友ホシャイは町にはいった。その時アブサロムはすでにエルサレムにはいっていた。

So Hushai, David`s friend, came into the city; and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

第16章

ダビデが山の頂を過ぎて、すこし行った時、メピボセテのしもべヂバは、くらを置いた二頭のろばを引き、その上にパン二百個、干ぶどう百ふさ、夏のくだもの一百、ぶどう酒一袋を載せてきてダビデを迎えた。

And when David was a little past the top [of the ascent], behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and a hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine.

王はヂバに言った、「あなたはどうしてこれらのものを持ってきたのですか」。ヂバは答えた、「ろばは王の家族が乗るため、パンと夏のくだものは若者たちが食べるため、ぶどう酒は荒野で弱った者が飲むためです」。

And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses are for the king`s household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink.

王は言った、「あなたの主人の子はどこにおるのですか」。ヂバは王に言った、「エルサレムにとどまっています。彼は、『イスラエルの家はきょう、わたしの父の国をわたしに返すであろう』と思ったのです」。

And the king said, And where is thy master`s son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem; for he said, To-day will the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.

王はヂバに言った、「見よ、メピボセテのものはことごとくあなたのものです」。ヂバは言った、「わたしは敬意を表します。わが主、王よ、あなたの前にいつまでも恵みを得させてください」。

Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine is all that pertaineth unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I do obeisance; let me find favor in thy sight, my lord, O king.

ダビデ王がバホリムにきた時、サウルの家の一族の者がひとりそこから出てきた。その名をシメイといい、ゲラの子である。彼は出てきながら絶えずのろった。

And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came out, and cursed still as he came.

そして彼はダビデとダビデ王のもろもろの家来に向かって石を投げた。その時、民と勇士たちはみな王の左右にいた。

And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

シメイはのろう時にこう言った、「血を流す人よ、よこしまな人よ、立ち去れ、立ち去れ。

And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and base fellow:

あなたが代って王となったサウルの家の血をすべて主があなたに報いられたのだ。主は王国をあなたの子アブサロムの手に渡された。見よ、あなたは血を流す人だから、災に会うのだ」。

Jehovah hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and Jehovah hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son; and, behold, thou art [taken] in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.

時にゼルヤの子アビシャイは王に言った、「この死んだ犬がどうしてわが主、王をのろってよかろうか。わたしに、行って彼の首を取らせてください」。

Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.

しかし王は言った、「ゼルヤの子たちよ、あなたがたと、なんのかかわりがあるのか。彼がのろうのは、主が彼に、『ダビデをのろえ』と言われたからであるならば、だれが、『あなたはどうしてこういうことをするのか』と言ってよいであろうか」。

And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? Because he curseth, and because Jehovah hath said unto him, Curse David; who then shall say, Wherefore hast thou done so?

ダビデはまたアビシャイと自分のすべての家来とに言った、「わたしの身から出たわが子がわたしの命を求めている。今、このベニヤミンびととしてはなおさらだ。彼を許してのろわせておきなさい。主が彼に命じられたのだ。

And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, who came forth from my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more [may] this Benjamite now [do it]? let him alone, and let him curse; for Jehovah hath bidden him.

主はわたしの悩みを顧みてくださるかもしれない。また主はきょう彼ののろいにかえて、わたしに善を報いてくださるかも知れない」。

It may be that Jehovah will look on the wrong done unto me, and that Jehovah will requite me good for [his] cursing of me this day.

こうしてダビデとその従者たちとは道を行ったが、シメイはダビデに並んで向かいの山の中腹を行き、行きながらのろい、また彼に向かって石や、ちりを投げつけた。

So David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill-side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.

王および共にいる民はみな疲れてヨルダンに着き、彼はその所で息をついだ。

And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary; and he refreshed himself there.

さてアブサロムとすべての民、イスラエルの人々はエルサレムにきた。アヒトペルもアブサロムと共にいた。

And Absalom, and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him.

ダビデの友であるアルキびとホシャイがアブサロムのもとにきた時、ホシャイはアブサロムに「王万歳、王万歳」と言った。

And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David`s friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom, [Long] live the king, [Long] live the king.

アブサロムはホシャイに言った、「これはあなたがその友に示す真実なのか。あなたはどうしてあなたの友と一緒に行かなかったのか」。

And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?

ホシャイはアブサロムに言った、「いいえ、主とこの民とイスラエルのすべての人々が選んだ者にわたしは属し、かつその人と一緒におります。

And Hushai said unto Absalom, Nay; but whom Jehovah, and this people, and all the men of Israel have chosen, his will I be, and with him will I abide.

かつまたわたしはだれに仕えるべきですか。その子の前に仕えるべきではありませんか。あなたの父の前に仕えたように、わたしはあなたの前に仕えます」。

And again, whom should I serve? [should I] not [serve] in the presence of his son? as I have served in thy father`s presence, so will I be in thy presence.

そこでアブサロムはアヒトペルに言った、「あなたがたは、われわれがどうしたらよいのか、計りごとを述べなさい」。

Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give your counsel what we shall do.

アヒトペルはアブサロムに言った、「あなたの父が家を守るために残された、めかけたちの所にはいりなさい。そうすればイスラエルは皆あなたが父上に憎まれることを聞くでしょう。そしてあなたと一緒にいる者の手は強くなるでしょう」。

And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father`s concubines, that he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then will the hands of all that are with thee be strong.

こうして彼らがアブサロムのために屋上に天幕を張ったので、アブサロムは全イスラエルの目の前で父のめかけたちの所にはいった。

So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in unto his father`s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

そのころアヒトペルが授ける計りごとは人が神のみ告げを伺うようであった。アヒトペルの計りごとは皆ダビデにもアブサロムにも共にそのように思われた。

And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

第17章

時にアヒトペルはアブサロムに言った、「わたしに一万二千の人を選び出させてください。わたしは立って、今夜ダビデのあとを追い、

Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:

彼が疲れて手が弱くなっているところを襲って、彼をあわてさせましょう。そして彼と共にいる民がみな逃げるとき、わたしは王ひとりを撃ち取り、

and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only;

すべての民を花嫁がその夫のもとに帰るようにあなたに帰らせましょう。あなたが求めておられるのはただひとりの命だけですから、民はみな穏やかになるでしょう」。

and I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: [so] all the people shall be in peace.

この言葉はアブサロムとイスラエルのすべての長老の心にかなった。

And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

そこでアブサロムは言った、「アルキびとホシャイをも呼びよせなさい。われわれは彼の言うことを聞きましょう」。

Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.

ホシャイがアブサロムのもとにきた時、アブサロムは彼に言った、「アヒトペルはこのように言った。われわれは彼の言葉のように行うべきか。いけないのであれば、言いなさい」。

And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do [after] his saying? if not, speak thou.

ホシャイはアブサロムに言った、「このたびアヒトペルが授けた計りごとは良くありません」。

And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given this time is not good.

ホシャイはまた言った、「ごぞんじのように、あなたの父とその従者たちとは勇士です。その上彼らは、野で子を奪われた熊のように、ひどく怒っています。また、あなたの父はいくさびとですから、民と共に宿らないでしょう。

Hushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

彼は今でも穴の中か、どこかほかの所にかくれています。もし民のうちの幾人かが手始めに倒れるならば、それを聞く者はだれでも、『アブサロムに従う民のうちに戦死者があった』と言うでしょう。

Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some [other] place: and it will come to pass, when some of them are fallen at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.

そうすれば、ししの心のような心のある勇ましい人であっても、恐れて消え去ってしまうでしょう。それはイスラエルのすべての人が、あなたの父の勇士であること、また彼と共にいる者が、勇ましい人々であることを知っているからです。

And even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they that are with him are valiant men.

ところでわたしの計りごとは、イスラエルをダンからベエルシバまで、海べの砂のように多くあなたのもとに集めて、あなたみずから戦いに臨むことです。

But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

こうしてわれわれは彼の見つかる場所で彼を襲い、つゆが地におりるように彼の上に下る。そして彼および彼と共にいるすべての人をひとりも残さないでしょう。

So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one.

もし彼がいずれかの町に退くならば、全イスラエルはその町になわをかけ、われわれはそれを谷に引き倒して、そこに一つの小石も見られないようにするでしょう」。

Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.

アブサロムとイスラエルの人々はみな、「アルキびとホシャイの計りごとは、アヒトペルの計りごとよりもよい」と言った。それは主がアブサロムに災を下そうとして、アヒトペルの良い計りごとを破ることを定められたからである。

And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For Jehovah had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that Jehovah might bring evil upon Absalom.

そこでホシャイは祭司たち、ザドクとアビヤタルとに言った、「アヒトペルはアブサロムとイスラエルの長老たちのためにこういう計りごとをした。またわたしはこういう計りごとをした。

Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.

それゆえ、あなたがたはすみやかに人をつかわしてダビデに告げ、『今夜、荒野の渡し場に宿らないで、必ず渡って行きなさい。さもないと王および共にいる民はみな、滅ぼされるでしょう』と言いなさい」。

Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.

時に、ヨナタンとアヒマアズはエンロゲルで待っていた。ひとりのつかえめが行って彼らに告げ、彼らは行ってダビデ王に告げるのが常であった。それは彼らが町にはいるのを見られないようにするためである。

Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying by En-rogel; and a maid-servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David: for they might not be seen to come into the city.

ところがひとりの若者が彼らを見てアブサロムに告げたので、彼らふたりは急いで去り、バホリムの、あるひとりの人の家にきた。その人の庭に井戸があって、彼らはその中に下ったので、

But a lad saw them, and told Absalom: and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither.

女はおおいを取ってきて井戸の口の上にひろげ、麦をその上にまき散らした。それゆえその事は何も知れなかった。

And the woman took and spread the covering over the well`s mouth, and strewed bruised grain thereon; and nothing was known.

アブサロムのしもべたちはその女の家にきて言った、「アヒマアズとヨナタンはどこにいますか」。女は彼らに言った、「あの人々は小川を渡って行きました」。彼らは尋ねたが見当らなかったのでエルサレムに帰った。

And Absalom`s servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They are gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

彼らが去った後、人々は井戸から上り、行ってダビデ王に告げた。すなわち彼らはダビデに言った、「立って、すみやかに川を渡りなさい。アヒトペルがあなたがたに対してこういう計りごとをしたからです」。

And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David, Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water; for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.

そこでダビデは立って、共にいるすべての民と一緒にヨルダンを渡った。夜明けには、ヨルダンを渡らない者はひとりもなかった。

Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over the Jordan.

アヒトペルは、自分の計りごとが行われないのを見て、ろばにくらを置き、立って自分の町に行き、その家に帰った。そして家の人に遺言してみずからくびれて死に、その父の墓に葬られた。

And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

ダビデはマハナイムにきた。またアブサロムは自分と共にいるイスラエルのすべての人々と一緒にヨルダンを渡った。

Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

アブサロムはアマサをヨアブの代りに軍の長とした。アマサはかのナハシの娘でヨアブの母ゼルヤの妹であるアビガルをめとったイシマエルびと、名はイトラという人の子である。

And Absalom set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Israelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab`s mother.

そしてイスラエルとアブサロムはギレアデの地に陣取った。

And Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.

ダビデがマハナイムにきた時、アンモンの人々のうちのラバのナハシの子ショビと、ロ・デバルのアンミエルの子マキル、およびロゲリムのギレアデびとバルジライは、

And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,

寝床と鉢、土器、小麦、大麦、粉、いり麦、豆、レンズ豆、

brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched [grain], and beans, and lentils, and parched [pulse],

蜜、凝乳、羊、乾酪をダビデおよび共にいる民が食べるために持ってきた。それは彼らが、「民は荒野で飢え疲れかわいている」と思ったからである。

and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of the herd, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

第18章

さてダビデは自分と共にいる民を調べて、その上に千人の長、百人の長を立てた。

And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

そしてダビデは民をつかわし、三分の一をヨアブの手に、三分の一をゼルヤの子ヨアブの兄弟アビシャイの手に、三分の一をガテびとイッタイの手にあずけた。こうして王は民に言った、「わたしもまた必ずあなたがたと一緒に出ます」。

And David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab`s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

しかし民は言った、「あなたは出てはなりません。それはわれわれがどんなに逃げても、彼らはわれわれに心をとめず、われわれの半ばが死んでも、われわれに心をとめないからです。しかしあなたはわれわれの一万に等しいのです。それゆえあなたは町の中からわれわれを助けてくださる方がよろしい」。

But the people said, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but thou art worth ten thousand of us; therefore now it is better that thou be ready to succor us out of the city.

王は彼らに言った、「あなたがたの最も良いと思うことをわたしはしましょう」。こうして王は門のかたわらに立ち、民は皆あるいは百人、あるいは千人となって出て行った。

And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate-side, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.

王はヨアブ、アビシャイおよびイッタイに命じて、「わたしのため、若者アブサロムをおだやかに扱うように」と言った。王がアブサロムの事についてすべての長たちに命じている時、民は皆聞いていた。

And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.

こうして民はイスラエルに向かって野に出て行き、エフライムの森で戦ったが、

So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.

イスラエルの民はその所でダビデの家来たちの前に敗れた。その日その所に戦死者が多く、二万に及んだ。

And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.

そして戦いはあまねくその地のおもてに広がった。この日、森の滅ぼした者は、つるぎの滅ぼした者よりも多かった。

For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

さてアブサロムはダビデの家来たちに行き会った。その時アブサロムは騾馬に乗っていたが、騾馬は大きいかしの木の、茂った枝の下を通ったので、アブサロムの頭がそのかしの木にかかって、彼は天地の間につりさがった。騾馬は彼を捨てて過ぎて行った。

And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. And Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between heaven and earth; and the mule that was under him went on.

ひとりの人がそれを見てヨアブに告げて言った、「わたしはアブサロムが、かしの木にかかっているのを見ました」。

And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.

ヨアブはそれを告げた人に言った、「あなたはそれを見たというのか。それなら、どうしてあなたは彼をその所で、地に撃ち落さなかったのか。わたしはあなたに銀十シケルと帯一筋を与えたであろうに」。

And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest it, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten [pieces of] silver, and a girdle.

その人はヨアブに言った、「たといわたしの手に銀千シケルを受けても、手を出して王の子に敵することはしません。王はわれわれが聞いているところで、あなたとアビシャイとイッタイに、『わたしのため若者アブサロムを保護せよ』と命じられたからです。

And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand [pieces of] silver in my hand, yet would I not put forth my hand against the king`s son; for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.

もしわたしがそむいて彼の命をそこなったのであれば、何事も王に隠れることはありませんから、あなたはみずから立ってわたしを責められたでしょう」。

Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against his life (and there is no matter hid from the king), then thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against [me].

そこで、ヨアブは「こうしてあなたと共にとどまってはおられない」と言って、手に三筋の投げやりを取り、あのかしの木にかかって、なお生きているアブサロムの心臓にこれを突き通した。

Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

ヨアブの武器を執る十人の若者たちは取り巻いて、アブサロムを撃ち殺した。

And ten young men that bare Joab`s armor compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.

こうしてヨアブがラッパを吹いたので、民はイスラエルのあとを追うことをやめて帰った。ヨアブが民を引きとめたからである。

And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held back the people.

人々はアブサロムを取って、森の中の大きな穴に投げいれ、その上にひじょうに大きい石塚を積み上げた。そしてイスラエルはみなおのおのその天幕に逃げ帰った。

And they took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.

さてアブサロムは生きている間に、王の谷に自分のために一つの柱を建てた。それは彼が、「わたしは自分の名を伝える子がない」と思ったからである。彼はその柱に自分の名をつけた。その柱は今日までアブサロムの碑ととなえられている。

Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king`s dale; for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name; and it is called Absalom`s monument, unto this day.

さてザドクの子アヒマアズは言った、「わたしは走って行って、主が王を敵の手から救い出されたおとずれを王に伝えましょう」。

Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that Jehovah hath avenged him of his enemies.

ヨアブは彼に言った、「きょうは、おとずれを伝えてはならない。おとずれを伝えるのは、ほかの日にしなさい。きょうは王の子が死んだので、おとずれを伝えてはならない」。

And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not be the bearer of tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day; but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king`s son is dead.

ヨアブはクシびとに言った、「行って、あなたの見た事を王に告げなさい」。クシびとはヨアブに礼をして走って行った。

Then said Joab to the Cushite, Go, tell the king what thou hast seen. And the Cushite bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.

ザドクの子アヒマアズは重ねてヨアブに言った、「何事があろうとも、わたしにもクシびとのあとから走って行かせてください」。ヨアブは言った、「子よ、おとずれの報いを得られないのに、どうしてあなたは走って行こうとするのか」。

Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But come what may, let me, I pray thee, also run after the Cushite. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou wilt have no reward for the tidings?

彼は言った、「何事があろうとも、わたしは走って行きます」。ヨアブは彼に言った、「走って行きなさい」。そこでアヒマアズは低地の道を走って行き、クシびとを追い越した。

But come what may, [said he], I will run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and outran the Cushite.

時にダビデは二つの門の間にすわっていた。そして見張りの者が城壁の門の屋根にのぼり、目をあげて見ていると、ただひとりで走ってくる者があった。

Now David was sitting between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, a man running alone.

見張りの者が呼ばわって王に告げたので、王は言った、「もしひとりならば、その口におとずれがあるであろう」。その人は急いできて近づいた。

And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.

見張りの者は、ほかにまたひとり走ってくるのを見たので、門の方に呼ばわって言った、「見よ、ほかにただひとりで走って来る者があります」。王は言った、「彼もまたおとずれを持ってくるのだ」。

And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold, [another] man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.

見張りの者は言った、「まっ先に走って来る人はザドクの子アヒマアズのようです」。王は言った、「彼は良い人だ。良いおとずれを持ってくるであろう」。

And the watchman said, I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.

時にアヒマアズは呼ばわって王に言った、「平安でいらせられますように」。そして王の前に地にひれ伏して言った、「あなたの神、主はほむべきかな。主は王、わが君に敵して手をあげた人々を引き渡されました」。

And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, Blessed be Jehovah thy God, who hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.

王は言った、「若者アブサロムは平安ですか」。アヒマアズは答えた、「ヨアブがしもべをつかわす時、わたしは大きな騒ぎを見ましたが、何事であったか知りません」。

And the king said, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king`s servant, even me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.

王は言った、「わきへ行って、そこに立っていなさい」。彼はわきへ行って立った。

And the king said, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.

その時クシびとがきた。そしてそのクシびとは言った、「わが君、王が良いおとずれをお受けくださるよう。主はきょう、すべてあなたに敵して立った者どもの手から、あなたを救い出されたのです」。

And, behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, Tidings for my lord the king; for Jehovah hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.

王はクシびとに言った、「若者アブサロムは平安ですか」。クシびとは答えた、「王、わが君の敵、およびすべてあなたに敵して立ち、害をしようとする者は、あの若者のようになりますように」。

And the king said unto the Cushite, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And the Cushite answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise up against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.

王はひじょうに悲しみ、門の上のへやに上って泣いた。彼は行きながらこのように言った、「わが子アブサロムよ。わが子、わが子アブサロムよ。ああ、わたしが代って死ねばよかったのに。アブサロム、わが子よ、わが子よ」。

And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

第19章

時にヨアブに告げる者があって、「見よ、王はアブサロムのために泣き悲しんでいる」と言った。

And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.

こうしてその日の勝利はすべての民の悲しみとなった。それはその日、民が、「王はその子のために悲しんでいる」と人の言うのを聞いたからである。

And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people; for the people heard say that day, The king grieveth for his son.

そして民はその日、戦いに逃げて恥じている民がひそかに、はいるように、ひそかに町にはいった。

And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people that are ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

王は顔をおおった。そして王は大声に叫んで、「わが子アブサロムよ。アブサロム、わが子よ、わが子よ」と言った。

And the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

時にヨアブは家にはいり、王のもとにきて言った、「あなたは、きょう、あなたの命と、あなたのむすこ娘たちの命、およびあなたの妻たちの命と、めかけたちの命を救ったすべての家来の顔をはずかしめられました。

And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, who this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;

それはあなたが自分を憎む者を愛し、自分を愛する者を憎まれるからです。あなたは、きょう、軍の長たちをも、しもべたちをも顧みないことを示されました。きょう、わたしは知りました。もし、アブサロムが生きていて、われわれが皆きょう死んでいたら、あなたの目にかなったでしょう。

in that thou lovest them that hate thee, and hatest them that love thee. For thou hast declared this day, that princes and servants are nought unto thee: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.

今立って出て行って、しもべたちにねんごろに語ってください。わたしは主をさして誓います。もしあなたが出られないならば、今夜あなたと共にとどまる者はひとりもないでしょう。これはあなたが若い時から今までにこうむられたすべての災よりも、あなたにとって悪いでしょう」。

Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants; for I swear by Jehovah, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry a man with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that hath befallen thee from thy youth until now.

そこで王は立って門のうちの座についた。人々はすべての民に、「見よ、王は門に座している」と告げたので、民はみな王の前にきた。さてイスラエルはおのおのその天幕に逃げ帰った。

Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king is sitting in the gate: and all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his tent.

そしてイスラエルのもろもろの部族の中で民はみな争って言った、「王はわれわれを敵の手から救い出し、またわれわれをペリシテびとの手から助け出された。しかし今はアブサロムのために国のそとに逃げておられる。

And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, and he saved us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land from Absalom.

またわれわれが油を注いで、われわれの上に立てたアブサロムは戦いで死んだ。それであるのに、どうしてあなたがたは王を導きかえることについて、何をも言わないのか」。

And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?

ダビデ王は祭司たちザドクとアビヤタルとに人をつかわして言った、「ユダの長老たちに言いなさい、『全イスラエルの言葉が王に達したのに、どうしてあなたがたは王をその家に導きかえる最後の者となるのですか。

And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, [to bring him] to his house.

あなたがたはわたしの兄弟、わたしの骨肉です。それにどうして王を導きかえる最後の者となるのですか』。

Ye are my brethren, ye are my bone and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?

またアマサに言いなさい、『あなたはわたしの骨肉ではありませんか。これから後あなたをヨアブに代えて、わたしの軍の長とします。もしそうしないときは、神が幾重にもわたしを罰してくださるように』」。

And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.

こうしてダビデはユダのすべての人の心を、ひとりのように自分に傾けさせたので、彼らは王に、「どうぞあなたも、すべての家来たちも帰ってきてください」と言いおくった。

And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as [the heart of] one man; so that they sent unto the king, [saying], Return thou, and all thy servants.

そこで王は帰ってきてヨルダンまで来ると、ユダの人人は王を迎えるためギルガルにきて、王にヨルダンを渡らせた。

So the king returned, and came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over the Jordan.

バホリムのベニヤミンびと、ゲラの子シメイは、急いでユダの人々と共に下ってきて、ダビデ王を迎えた。

And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, who was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.

一千人のベニヤミンびとが彼と共にいた。またサウルの家のしもべヂバもその十五人のむすこと、二十人のしもべを従えて、王の前にヨルダンに駆け下った。

And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went through the Jordan in the presence of the king.

そして王の家族を渡し、王の心にかなうことをしようと渡し場を渡った。ゲラの子シメイはヨルダンを渡ろうとする時、王の前にひれ伏し、

And there went over a ferry-boat to bring over the king`s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, when he was come over the Jordan.

王に言った、「どうぞわが君が、罪をわたしに帰しられないように。またわが君、王のエルサレムを出られた日に、しもべがおこなった悪い事を思い出されないように。どうぞ王がそれを心に留められないように。

And he said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

しもべは自分が罪を犯したことを知っています。それゆえ、見よ、わたしはきょう、ヨセフの全家のまっ先に下ってきて、わが主、王を迎えるのです」。

For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come this day the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.

ゼルヤの子アビシャイは答えて言った、「シメイは主が油を注がれた者をのろったので、そのために殺されるべきではありませんか」。

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed Jehovah`s anointed?

ダビデは言った、「あなたがたゼルヤの子たちよ、あなたがたとなにのかかわりがあって、あなたがたはきょうわたしに敵対するのか。きょう、イスラエルのうちで人を殺して良かろうか。わたしが、きょうイスラエルの王となったことを、どうして自分で知らないことがあろうか」。

And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

こうして王はシメイに、「あなたを殺さない」と言って、王は彼に誓った。

And the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.

サウルの子メピボセテは下ってきて王を迎えた。彼は王が去った日から安らかに帰る日まで、その足を飾らず、そのひげを整えず、またその着物を洗わなかった。

And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace.

彼がエルサレムからきて王を迎えた時、王は彼に言った、「メピボセテよ、あなたはどうしてわたしと共に行かなかったのか」。

And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?

彼は答えた、「わが主、王よ、わたしの家来がわたしを欺いたのです。しもべは彼に、『わたしのために、ろばにくらを置け。わたしはそれに乗って王と共に行く』と言ったのです。しもべは足なえだからです。

And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go with the king; because thy servant is lame.

ところが彼はしもべのことをわが主、王の前に、あしざまに言ったのです。しかし、わが主、王は神の使のようでいらせられます。それで、あなたの良いと思われることをしてください。

And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

わたしの父の全家はわが主、王の前にはみな死んだ人にすぎないのに、あなたはしもべを、あなたの食卓で食事をする人々のうちに置かれました。わたしになんの権利があって、重ねて王に訴えることができましょう」。

For all my father`s house were but dead men before my lord the king; yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should cry any more unto the king?

王は彼に言った、「あなたはどうしてなおも自分のことを言うのですか。わたしは決めました。あなたとヂバとはその土地を分けなさい」。

And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I say, Thou and Ziba divide the land.

メピボセテは王に言った、「わが主、王が安らかに家に帰られたのですから、彼にそれをみな取らせてください」。

And Mephibosheth said unto the king, yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come in peace unto his own house.

さてギレアデびとバルジライはロゲリムから下ってきて、ヨルダンで王を見送るため、王と共にヨルダンに進んだ。

And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he went over the Jordan with the king, to conduct him over the Jordan.

バルジライは、ひじょうに年老いた人で八十{歳であった。彼はまた、ひじょうに裕福な人であったので、王がマハナイムにとどまっている間、王を養った。

Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.

王はバルジライに言った、「わたしと一緒に渡って行きなさい。わたしはエルサレムであなたをわたしと共におらせて養いましょう」。

And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will sustain thee with me in Jerusalem.

バルジライは王に言った、「わたしは、なお何年いきながらえるので、王と共にエルサレムに上るのですか。

And Barzillai said unto the king, How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?

わたしは今日八十歳です。わたしに、良いこと悪いことがわきまえられるでしょうか。しもべは食べるもの、飲むものを味わうことができましょうか。わたしは歌う男や歌う女の声をまだ聞くことができましょうか。それであるのに、しもべはどうしてなおわが主、王の重荷となってよろしいでしょうか。

I am this day fourscore years old: can I discern between good and bad? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?

しもべは王と共にヨルダンを渡って、ただ少し行きましょう。どうして王はこのような報いをわたしに報いられなければならないのでしょうか。

Thy servant would but just go over the Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?

どうぞしもべを帰らせてください。わたしは自分の町で、父母の墓の近くで死にます。ただし、あなたのしもべキムハムがここにおります。わが主、王と共に彼を渡って行かせてください。またあなたが良いと思われる事を彼にしてください」。

Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold, thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.

王は答えた、「キムハムはわたしと共に渡って行かせます。わたしは、あなたが良いと思われる事を彼にしましょう。またあなたが望まれることはみな、あなたのためにいたします」。

And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.

こうして民はみなヨルダンを渡った。王は渡った時、バルジライに口づけして、祝福したので、彼は自分の家に帰っていった。

And all the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over: and the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.

王はギルガルに進んだ。キムハムも彼と共に進んだ。ユダの民はみな王を送り、イスラエルの民の半ばもまたそうした。

So the king went over to Gilgal, and Chimham went over with him: and all the people of Judah brought the king over, and also half the people of Israel.

さてイスラエルの人々はみな王の所にきて、王に言った、「われわれの兄弟であるユダの人々は、何ゆえにあなたを盗み去って、王とその家族、およびダビデに伴っているすべての従者にヨルダンを渡らせたのですか」。

And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and brought the king, and his household, over the Jordan, and all David`s men with him?

ユダの人々はみなイスラエルの人々に答えた、「王はわれわれの近親だからです。あなたがたはどうしてこの事で怒られるのですか。われわれが少しでも王の物を食べたことがありますか。王が何か賜物をわれわれに与えたことがありますか」。

And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then are ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all at the king`s cost? or hath he given us any gift?

イスラエルの人々はユダの人々に答えた、「われわれは王のうちに十の分を持っています。またダビデのうちにもわれわれはあなたがたよりも多くを持っています。それであるのに、どうしてあなたがたはわれわれを軽んじたのですか。われらの王を導き帰ろうと最初に言ったのはわれわれではないのですか」。しかしユダの人々の言葉はイスラエルの人々の言葉よりも激しかった。

And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more [right] in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

第20章

さて、その所にひとりのよこしまな人があって、名をシバといった。ビクリの子で、ベニヤミンびとであった。彼はラッパを吹いて言った、「われわれはダビデのうちに分がない。またエッサイの子のうちに嗣業を持たない。イスラエルよ、おのおのその天幕に帰りなさい」。

And there happened to be there a base fellow, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew the trumpet, and said, We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel.

そこでイスラエルの人々は皆ダビデに従う事をやめて、ビクリの子シバに従った。しかしユダの人々はその王につき従って、ヨルダンからエルサレムへ行った。

So all the men of Israel went up from following David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah clave unto their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

ダビデはエルサレムの自分の家にきた。そして王は家を守るために残しておいた十人のめかけたちを取って、一つの家に入れて守り、また養ったが、彼女たちの所には、はいらなかった。彼女たちは死ぬ日まで閉じこめられ一生、寡婦としてすごした。

And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and provided them with sustenance, but went not in unto them. So they were shut up unto the day of their death, living in widowhood.

王はアマサに言った、「わたしのため三日のうちにユダの人々を呼び集めて、ここにきなさい」。

Then said the king to Amasa, Call me the men of Judah together within three days, and be thou here present.

アマサはユダを呼び集めるために行ったが、彼は定められた時よりもおくれた。

So Amasa went to call [the men of] Judah together; but he tarried longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

ダビデはアビシャイに言った、「ビクリの子シバは今われわれにアブサロムよりも多くの害をするであろう。あなたの主君の家来たちを率いて、彼のあとを追いなさい。さもないと彼は堅固な町々を獲て、われわれを悩ますであろう」。

And David said to Abishai, Now will Sheba the son of Bichri do us more harm than did Absalom: take thou thy lord`s servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him fortified cities, and escape out of our sight.

こうしてヨアブとケレテびととペレテびと、およびすべての勇士はアビシャイに従って出た。すなわち彼らはエルサレムを出て、ビクリの子シバのあとを追った。

And there went out after him Joab`s men, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

彼らがギベオンにある大石のところにいた時、アマサがきて彼らに会った。時にヨアブは軍服を着て、帯をしめ、その上にさやに納めたつるぎを腰に結んで帯びていたが、彼が進み出た時つるぎは抜け落ちた。

When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. And Joab was girded with his apparel of war that he had put on, and thereon was a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out.

ヨアブはアマサに、「兄弟よ、あなたは安らかですか」と言って、ヨアブは右の手をもってアマサのひげを捕えて彼に口づけしようとしたが、

And Joab said to Amasa, Is it well with thee, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

アマサはヨアブの手につるぎがあることに気づかなかったので、ヨアブはそれをもってアマサの腹部を刺して、そのはらわたを地に流し出し、重ねて撃つこともなく彼を殺した。こうしてヨアブとその兄弟アビシャイはビクリの子シバのあとを追った。

But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab`s hand: so he smote him therewith in the body, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. And Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

時にヨアブの若者のひとりがアマサのかたわらに立って言った、「ヨアブに味方する者、ダビデにつく者はヨアブのあとに従いなさい」。

And there stood by him one of Joab`s young men, and said, He that favoreth Joab, and he that is for David, let him follow Joab.

アマサは血に染んで大路の中にころがっていたので、そのそばに来る者はみな彼を見て立ちどまった。この人は民がみな立ちどまるのを見て、アマサを大路から畑に移し、衣服をその上にかけた。

And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a garment over him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still.

アマサが大路から移されたので、民は皆ヨアブに従って進み、ビクリの子シバのあとを追った。

When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

シバはイスラエルのすべての部族のうちを通ってベテマアカのアベルにきた。ビクリびとは皆、集まってきて彼に従った。

And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, and to Beth-maacah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and went also after him.

そこでヨアブと共にいたすべての人々がきて、彼をベテマアカのアベルに囲み、町に向かって土塁を築いた。それはとりでに向かって立てられた。こうして彼らは城壁をくずそうとしてこれを撃った。

And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah, and they cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart; and all the people that were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.

その時、ひとりの賢い女が町から呼ばわった、「あなたがたは聞きなさい。あなたがたは聞きなさい。ヨアブに、『ここにきてください。わたしはあなたに言うことがあります』と言ってください」。

Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak with thee.

彼がその女に近寄ると、女は「あなたがヨアブですか」と言った。彼は「そうです」と答えた。すると女は彼に「はしための言葉をお聞きください」と言ったので、「聞きましょう」と彼は言った。

And he came near unto her; and the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he answered, I am. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thy handmaid. And he answered, I do hear.

そこで女は言った、「昔、人々はいつも、『アベルで尋ねなさい』と言って、事を定めました。

Then she spake, saying, They were wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask [counsel] at Abel: and so they ended [the matter].

わたしはイスラエルのうちの平和な、忠誠な者です。そうであるのに、あなたはイスラエルのうちで母ともいうべき町を滅ぼそうとしておられます。どうして主の嗣業を、のみ尽そうとされるのですか」。

I am of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou seekest to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of Jehovah?

ヨアブは答えた、「いいえ、決してそうではなく、わたしが、のみ尽したり、滅ぼしたりすることはありません。

And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.

事実はそうではなく、エフライムの山地の人ビクリの子、名をシバという者が手をあげて王ダビデにそむいたのです。あなたがたが彼ひとりを渡すならば、わたしはこの町を去ります」。女はヨアブに言った、「彼の首は城壁の上からあなたの所へ投げられるでしょう」。

The matter is not so: but a man of the hill-country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David; deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.

こうしてこの女が知恵をもって、すべての民の所に行ったので、彼らはビクリの子シバの首をはねてヨアブの所へ投げ出した。そこでヨアブはラッパを吹きならしたので、人々は散って町を去り、おのおの家に帰った。ヨアブはエルサレムにいる王のもとに帰った。

Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. And he blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

ヨアブはイスラエルの全軍の長であった。エホヤダの子ベナヤはケレテびと、およびペレテびとの長、

Now Joab was over all the host of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites;

アドラムは徴募人の長、アヒルデの子ヨシャパテは史官、

and Adoram was over the men subject to taskwork; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;

シワは書記官、ザドクとアビヤタルとは祭司。

and Sheva was scribe; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;

またヤイルびとイラはダビデの祭司であった。

and also Ira the Jairite was chief minister unto David.

第21章

ダビデの世に、年また年と三年、ききんがあったので、ダビデが主に尋ねたところ、主は言われた、「サウルとその家とに、血を流した罪がある。それはかつて彼がギベオンびとを殺したためである」。

And there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David sought the face of Jehovah. And Jehovah said, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he put to death the Gibeonites.

そこで王はギベオンびとを召しよせた。ギベオンびとはイスラエルの子孫ではなく、アモリびとの残りであって、イスラエルの人々は彼らと誓いを立てて、その命を助けた。ところがサウルはイスラエルとユダの人々のために熱心であったので、彼らを殺そうとしたのである。

And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah);

それでダビデはギベオンびとに言った、「わたしはあなたがたのために、何をすればよいのですか。どんな償いをすれば、あなたがたは主の嗣業を祝福するのですか」。

and David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of Jehovah?

ギベオンびとは彼に言った、「これはわれわれと、サウルまたはその家との間の金銀の問題ではありません。またイスラエルのうちのひとりでも、われわれが殺そうというのでもありません」。ダビデは言った、「わたしがあなたがたのために何をすればよいと言うのですか」。

And the Gibeonites said unto him, It is no matter of silver or gold between us and Saul, or his house; neither is it for us to put any man to death in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.

かれらは王に言った、「われわれを滅ぼした人、われわれを滅ぼしてイスラエルの領域のどこにもおらせないようにと、たくらんだ人、

And they said unto the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us, [that] we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the borders of Israel,

その人の子孫七人を引き渡してください。われわれは主の山にあるギベオンで、彼らを主の前に木にかけましょう」。王は言った、「引き渡しましょう」。

let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto Jehovah in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of Jehovah. And the king said, I will give them.

しかし王はサウルの子ヨナタンの子であるメピボセテを惜しんだ。彼らの間、すなわちダビデとサウルの子ヨナタンとの間に、主をさして立てた誓いがあったからである。

But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of Jehovah`s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

王はアヤの娘リヅパがサウルに産んだふたりの子アルモニとメピボセテ、およびサウルの娘メラブがメホラびとバルジライの子アデリエルに産んだ五人の子を取って、

But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she bare to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:

彼らをギベオンびとの手に引き渡したので、ギベオンびとは彼らを山で主の前に木にかけた。彼ら七人は共に倒れた。彼らは刈入れの初めの日、すなわち大麦刈りの初めに殺された。

And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the mountain before Jehovah, and they fell [all] seven together. And they were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, at the beginning of barley harvest.

アヤの娘リヅパは荒布をとって、それを自分のために岩の上に敷き、刈入れの初めから、その人々の死体の上に天から雨が降るまで、昼は空の鳥が死体の上にこないようにし、夜は野の獣を近寄らせなかった。

And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water was poured upon them from heaven; and she suffered neither the birds of the heavens to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.

アヤの娘でサウルのめかけであったリヅパのしたことがダビデに聞えたので、

And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.

ダビデは行ってサウルの骨とその子ヨナタンの骨を、ヤベシギレアデの人々の所から取ってきた。これはペリシテびとがサウルをギルボアで殺した日に、木にかけたベテシャンの広場から、彼らが盗んでいたものである。

And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hanged them, in the day that the Philistines slew Saul in Gilboa;

ダビデはそこからサウルの骨と、その子ヨナタンの骨を携えて上った。また人々はそのかけられた者どもの骨を集めた。

and he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son: and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged.

こうして彼らはサウルとその子ヨナタンの骨を、ベニヤミンの地のゼラにあるその父キシの墓に葬り、すべて王の命じたようにした。この後、神はその地のために、祈を聞かれた。

And they buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in Zela, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was entreated for the land.

ペリシテびとはまたイスラエルと戦争をした。ダビデはその家来たちと共に下ってペリシテびとと戦ったが、ダビデは疲れていた。

And the Philistines had war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines. And David waxed faint;

時にイシビベノブはダビデを殺そうと思った。イシビベノブは巨人の子孫で、そのやりは青銅で重さ三百シケルあり、彼は新しいつるぎを帯びていた。

and Ishbibenob, who was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear was three hundred [shekels] of brass in weight, he being girded with a new [sword], thought to have slain David.

しかしゼルヤの子アビシャイはダビデを助けて、そのペリシテびとを撃ち殺した。そこでダビデの従者たちは彼に誓って言った、「あなたはわれわれと共に、重ねて戦争に出てはなりません。さもないと、あなたはイスラエルのともし火を消すでしょう」。

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succored him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the lamp of Israel.

この後、再びゴブでペリシテびととの戦いがあった。時にホシャびとシベカイは巨人の子孫のひとりサフを殺した。

And it came to pass after this, that there was again war with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Saph, who was of the sons of the giant.

ここにまたゴブで、ペリシテびととの戦いがあったが、そこではベツレヘムびとヤレオレギムの子エルハナンは、ガテびとゴリアテを殺した。そのやりの柄は機の巻棒のようであった。

And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob; and Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim the Beth-lehemite slew Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver`s beam.

またガテで再び戦いがあったが、そこにひとりの背の高い人があり、その手の指と足の指は六本ずつで、その数は合わせて二十四本であった。彼もまた巨人から生れた者であった。

And there was again war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.

彼はイスラエルをののしったので、ダビデの兄弟シメアの子ヨナタンが彼を殺した。

And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David`s brother, slew him.

これらの四人はガテで巨人から生れた者であったが、ダビデの手とその家来たちの手に倒れた。

These four were born to the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

第22章

ダビデは主がもろもろの敵の手とサウルの手から、自分を救い出された日に、この歌の言葉を主に向かって述べ、

And David spake unto Jehovah the words of this song in the day that Jehovah delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:

彼は言った、「主はわが岩、わが城、わたしを救う者、

and he said, Jehovah is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, even mine;

わが神、わが岩。わたしは彼に寄り頼む。わが盾、わが救の角、わが高きやぐら、わが避け所、わが救主。あなたはわたしを暴虐から救われる。

God, my rock, in him will I take refuge; My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge; My saviour, thou savest me from violence.

わたしは、ほめまつるべき主に呼ばわって、わたしの敵から救われる。

I will call upon Jehovah, who is worthy to be praised: So shall I be saved from mine enemies.

死の波はわたしをとりまき、滅びの大水はわたしを襲った。

For the waves of death compassed me; The floods of ungodliness made me afraid:

陰府の綱はわたしをとりかこみ、死のわなはわたしに、たち向かった。

The cords of Sheol were round about me; The snares of death came upon me.

苦難のうちにわたしは主を呼び、またわが神に呼ばわった。主がその宮からわたしの声を聞かれて、わたしの叫びはその耳にとどいた。

In my distress I called upon Jehovah; Yea, I called unto my God: And he heard my voice out of his temple, And my cry [came] into his ears.

その時地は震いうごき、天の基はゆるぎふるえた。彼が怒られたからである。

Then the earth shook and trembled, The foundations of heaven quaked And were shaken, because he was wroth.

煙はその鼻からたち上り、火はその口から出て焼きつくし、白熱の炭は彼から燃え出た。

There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, And fire out of his mouth devoured: Coals were kindled by it.

彼は天を低くして下られ、暗やみが彼の足の下にあった。

He bowed the heavens also, and came down; And thick darkness was under his feet.

彼はケルブに乗って飛び、風の翼に乗ってあらわれた。

And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly; Yea, he was seen upon the wings of the wind.

彼はその周囲に幕屋として、やみと濃き雲と水の集まりとを置かれた。

And he made darkness pavilions round about him, Gathering of waters, thick clouds of the skies.

そのみ前の輝きから炭火が燃え出た。

At the brightness before him Coals of fire were kindled.

主は天から雷をとどろかせ、いと高き者は声を出された。

Jehovah thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered his voice.

彼はまた矢を放って彼らを散らし、いなずまを放って彼らを撃ち破られた。

And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; Lightning, and discomfited them.

主のとがめと、その鼻のいぶきとによって、海の底はあらわれ、世界の基が、あらわになった。

Then the channels of the sea appeared, The foundations of the world were laid bare, By the rebuke of Jehovah, At the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

彼は高き所から手を伸べてわたしを捕え、大水の中からわたしを引き上げ、

He sent from on high, he took me; He drew me out of many waters;

わたしの強い敵と、わたしを憎む者とからわたしを救われた。彼らはわたしにとって、あまりにも強かったからだ。

He delivered me from my strong enemy, From them that hated me; for they were too mighty for me.

彼らはわたしの災の日にわたしに、たち向かった。しかし主はわたしの支柱となられた。

They came upon me in the day of my calamity; But Jehovah was my stay.

彼はまたわたしを広い所へ引きだされ、わたしを喜ばれて、救ってくださった。

He brought me forth also into a large place; He delivered me, because he delighted in me.

主はわたしの義にしたがってわたしに報い、わたしの手の清きにしたがってわたしに報いかえされた。

Jehovah rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

それは、わたしが主の道を守り、悪を行わず、わが神から離れたことがないからである。

For I have kept the ways of Jehovah, And have not wickedly departed from my God.

そのすべてのおきてはわたしの前にあって、わたしはその、み定めを離れたことがない。

For all his ordinances were before me; And as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.

わたしは主の前に欠けた所なく、自らを守って罪を犯さなかった。

I was also perfect toward him; And I kept myself from mine iniquity.

それゆえ、主はわたしの義にしたがい、その目のまえにわたしの清きにしたがって、わたしに報いられた。

Therefore hath Jehovah recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness in his eyesight.

忠実な者には、あなたは忠実な者となり、欠けた所のない人には、あなたは欠けた所のない者となり、

With the merciful thou wilt show thyself merciful; With the perfect man thou wilt show thyself perfect;

清い者には、あなたは清い者となり、まがった者には、かたいぢな者となられる。

With the pure thou wilt show thyself pure; And with the perverse thou wilt show thyself froward.

あなたはへりくだる民を救われる、しかしあなたの目は高ぶる者を見てこれをひくくせられる。

And the afflicted people thou wilt save; But thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.

まことに、主よ、あなたはわたしのともし火、わが神はわたしのやみを照される。

For thou art my lamp, O Jehovah; And Jehovah will lighten my darkness.

まことに、あなたによってわたしは敵軍をふみ滅ぼし、わが神によって石がきをとび越えることができる。

For by thee I run upon a troop; By my God do I leap over a wall.

この神こそ、その道は非のうちどころなく、主の約束は真実である。彼はすべて彼に寄り頼む者の盾である。

As for God, his way is perfect: The word of Jehovah is tried; He is a shield unto all them that take refuge in him.

主のほかに、だれが神か、われらの神のほか、だれが岩であるか。

For who is God, save Jehovah? And who is a rock, save our God?

この神こそわたしの堅固な避け所であり、わたしの道を安全にされた。

God is my strong fortress; And he guideth the perfect in his way.

わたしの足をめじかの足のようにして、わたしを高い所に安全に立たせ、

He maketh his feet like hinds` [feet], And setteth me upon my high places.

わたしの手を戦いに慣らされたので、わたしの腕は青銅の弓を引くことができる。

He teacheth my hands to war, So that mine arms do bend a bow of brass.

あなたはその救の盾をわたしに与え、あなたの助けは、わたしを大いなる者とされた。

Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation; And thy gentleness hath made me great.

あなたはわたしが歩く広い場所を与えられたので、わたしの足はすべらなかった。

Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; And my feet have not slipped.

わたしは敵を追って、これを滅ぼし、これを絶やすまでは帰らなかった。

I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; Neither did I turn again till they were consumed.

わたしは彼らを絶やし、彼らを砕いたので彼らは立つことができず、わたしの足もとに倒れた。

And I have consumed them, and smitten them through, so that they cannot arise: Yea, they are fallen under my feet.

あなたは戦いのために、わたしに力を帯びさせわたしを攻める者をわたしの下にかがませられた。

For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle; Thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.

あなたによって、敵はそのうしろをわたしに向けたので、わたしを憎む者をわたしは滅ぼした。

Thou hast also made mine enemies turn their backs unto me, That I might cut off them that hate me.

彼らは見まわしたが、救う者はいなかった。彼らは主に叫んだが、彼らには答えられなかった。

They looked, but there was none to save; Even unto Jehovah, but he answered them not.

わたしは彼らを地のちりのように細かに打ちくだき、ちまたのどろのように、踏みにじった。

Then did I beat them small as the dust of the earth, I did crush them as the mire of the streets, and did spread them abroad.

あなたはわたしを国々の民との争いから救い出し、わたしをもろもろの国民のかしらとされた。わたしの知らなかった民がわたしに仕えた。

Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people; Thou hast kept me to be the head of the nations: A people whom I have not known shall serve me.

異国の人たちはきてわたしにこび、わたしの事を聞くとすぐわたしに従った。

The foreigners shall submit themselves unto me: As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me.

異国の人たちは、うちしおれてその城からふるえながら出てきた。

The foreigners shall fade away, And shall come trembling out of their close places.

主は生きておられる。わが岩はほむべきかな。わが神、わが救の岩はあがむべきかな。

Jehovah liveth; And blessed be my rock; And exalted be God, the rock of my salvation,

この神はわたしのために、あだを報い、もろもろの民をわたしの下に置かれた。

Even the God that executeth vengeance for me, And that bringeth down peoples under me,

またわたしを敵から救い出し、あだの上にわたしをあげ、暴虐の人々からわたしを救い出された。

And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: Yea, thou liftest me up above them that rise up against me; Thou deliverest me from the violent man.

それゆえ、主よ、わたしはもろもろの国民の中で、あなたをたたえ、あなたの、み名をほめ歌うであろう。

Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Jehovah, among the nations, And will sing praises unto thy name.

主はその王に大いなる勝利を与え、油を注がれた者に、ダビデとその子孫とに、とこしえに、いつくしみを施される」。

Great deliverance giveth he to his king, And showeth lovingkindness to his anointed, To David and to his seed, for evermore.

第23章

これはダビデの最後の言葉である。エッサイの子ダビデの託宣、すなわち高く挙げられた人、ヤコブの神に油を注がれた人、イスラエルの良き歌びとの託宣。

Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse saith, And the man who was raised on high saith, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel:

「主の霊はわたしによって語る、その言葉はわたしの舌の上にある。

The Spirit of Jehovah spake by me, And his word was upon my tongue.

イスラエルの神は語られた、イスラエルの岩はわたしに言われた、『人を正しく治める者、神を恐れて、治める者は、

The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spake to me: One that ruleth over men righteously, That ruleth in the fear of God,

朝の光のように、雲のない朝に、輝きでる太陽のように、地に若草を芽ばえさせる雨のように人に臨む』。

[He shall be] as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, A morning without clouds, [When] the tender grass [springeth] out of the earth, Through clear shining after rain.

まことに、わが家はそのように、神と共にあるではないか。それは、神が、よろず備わって確かなとこしえの契約をわたしと結ばれたからだ。どうして彼はわたしの救と願いを、皆なしとげられぬことがあろうか。

Verily my house is not so with God; Yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, Ordered in all things, and sure: For it is all my salvation, and all [my] desire, Although he maketh it not to grow.

しかし、よこしまな人は、いばらのようで、手をもって取ることができないゆえ、みな共に捨てられるであろう。

But the ungodly shall be all of them as thorns to be thrust away, Because they cannot be taken with the hand

これに触れようとする人は鉄や、やりの柄をもって武装する、彼らはことごとく火で焼かれるであろう」。

But the man that toucheth them Must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear: And they shall be utterly burned with fire in [their] place

ダビデの勇士たちの名は次のとおりである。タクモンびとヨセブ・バッセベテはかの三人のうちの長であったが、彼はいちじに八百人に向かって、やりをふるい、それを殺した。

These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite, against eight hundred slain at one time.

彼の次はアホアびとドドの子エレアザルであって、三勇士のひとりである。彼は、戦おうとしてそこに集まったペリシテびとに向かって戦いをいどみ、イスラエルの人々が退いた時、ダビデと共にいたが、

And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away.

立ってペリシテびとを撃ち、ついに手が疲れ、手がつるぎに着いて離れないほどになった。その日、主は大いなる勝利を与えられた。民は彼のあとに帰ってきて、ただ殺された者をはぎ取るばかりであった。

He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword; and Jehovah wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to take spoil.

彼の次はハラルびとアゲの子シャンマであった。ある時、ペリシテびとはレヒに集まった。そこに一面にレンズ豆を作った地所があった。民はペリシテびとの前から逃げたが、

And after him was Shammah the son of Agee a Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Philistines.

彼はその地所の中に立って、これを防ぎ、ペリシテびとを殺した。そして主は大いなる救を与えられた。

But he stood in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and slew the Philistines; and Jehovah wrought a great victory.

三十人の長たちのうちの三人は下って行って刈入れのころに、アドラムのほら穴にいるダビデのもとにきた。時にペリシテびとの一隊はレパイムの谷に陣を取っていた。

And three of the thirty chief men went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

その時ダビデは要害におり、ペリシテびとの先陣はベツレヘムにあったが、

And David was then in the stronghold; and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Beth-lehem.

ダビデは、せつに望んで、「だれかベツレヘムの門のかたわらにある井戸の水をわたしに飲ませてくれるとよいのだが」と言った。

And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate!

そこでその三人の勇士たちはペリシテびとの陣を突き通って、ベツレヘムの門のかたわらにある井戸の水を汲み取って、ダビデのもとに携えてきた。しかしダビデはそれを飲もうとはせず、主の前にそれを注いで、

And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto Jehovah.

言った、「主よ、わたしは断じて飲むことをいたしません。いのちをかけて行った人々の血を、どうしてわたしは飲むことができましょう」。こうして彼はそれを飲もうとはしなかった。三勇士はこれらのことを行った。

And he said, Be it far from me, O Jehovah, that I should do this: [shall I drink] the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

ゼルヤの子ヨアブの兄弟アビシャイは三十人の長であった。彼は三百人に向かって、やりをふるい、それを殺した。そして、彼は三人と共に名を得た。

And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them, and had a name among the three.

彼は三十人のうち最も尊ばれた者で、彼らの長となった。しかし、かの三人には及ばなかった。

Was he not most honorable of the three? therefore he was made their captain: howbeit he attained not unto the [first] three.

エホヤダの子ベナヤはカブジエル出身の勇士であって、多くのてがらを立てた。彼はモアブのアリエルのふたりの子を撃ち殺した。彼はまた雪の日に下っていって、穴の中でししを撃ち殺した。

And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, he slew the two [sons of] Ariel of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow.

彼はまた姿のうるわしいエジプトびとを撃ち殺した。そのエジプトびとは手にやりを持っていたが、ベナヤはつえをとってその所に下っていき、エジプトびとの手からやりをもぎとって、そのやりをもって殺した。

And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian`s hand, and slew him with his own spear.

エホヤダの子ベナヤはこれらの事をして三勇士と共に名を得た。

These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had a name among the three mighty men.

彼は三十人のうちに有名であったが、かの三人には及ばなかった。ダビデは彼を侍衛の長とした。

He was more honorable than the thirty, but he attained not to the [first] three. And David set him over his guard.

三十人のうちにあったのは、ヨアブの兄弟アサヘル。ベツレヘム出身のドドの子エルハナン。

Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Beth-lehem,

ハロデ出身のシャンマ。ハロデ出身のエリカ。

Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite,

パルテびとヘレヅ。テコア出身のイッケシの子イラ。

Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite,

アナトテ出身のアビエゼル。ホシャびとメブンナイ。

Abiezer the Anathothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite,

アホアびとザルモン。ネトパ出身のマハライ。

Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite,

ネトパ出身のバアナの子ヘレブ。ベニヤミンびとのギベアから出たリバイの子イッタイ。

Heleb the son of Baanah the Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin,

ピラトンのベナヤ。ガアシの谷出身のヒダイ。

Benaiah a Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash.

アルバテびとアビアルボン。バホリム出身のアズマウテ。

Abialbon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite,

シャルボン出身のエリヤバ。ヤセンの子たち。ヨナタン。

Eliahba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan,

ハラルびとシャンマ。ハラルびとシャラルの子アヒアム。

Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Ararite,

マアカ出身のアハスバイの子エリペレテ。ギロ出身のアヒトペルの子エリアム。

Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maacathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,

カルメル出身のヘヅロ。アルバびとパアライ。

Hezro the Carmelite, Paarai the Arbite,

ゾバ出身のナタンの子イガル。ガドびとバニ。

Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite,

アンモンびとゼレク。ゼルヤの子ヨアブの武器を執る者、ベエロテ出身のナハライ。

Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, armorbearers to Joab the son of Zeruiah,

イテルびとイラ。イテルびとガレブ。

Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,

ヘテびとウリヤ。合わせて三十七人である。

Uriah the Hittite: thirty and seven in all.

第24章

主は再びイスラエルに向かって怒りを発し、ダビデを感動して彼らに逆らわせ、「行ってイスラエルとユダとを数えよ」と言われた。

And again the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.

そこで王はヨアブおよびヨアブと共にいる軍の長たちに言った、「イスラエルのすべての部族のうちを、ダンからベエルシバまで行き巡って民を数え、わたしに民の数を知らせなさい」。

And the king said to Joab the captain of the host, who was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people.

ヨアブは王に言った、「どうぞあなたの神、主が、民を今よりも百倍に増してくださいますように。そして王、わが主がまのあたり、それを見られますように。しかし王、わが主は何ゆえにこの事を喜ばれるのですか」。

And Joab said unto the king, Now Jehovah thy God add unto the people, how many soever they may be, a hundredfold; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

しかし王の言葉がヨアブと軍の長たちとに勝ったので、ヨアブと軍の長たちとは王の前を退き、イスラエルの民を数えるために出て行った。

Notwithstanding, the king`s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

彼らはヨルダンを渡り、アロエルから、すなわち谷の中にある町から始めて、ガドに向かい、ヤゼルに進んだ。

And they passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and unto Jazer:

それからギレアデに行き、またヘテびとの地にあるカデシに行き、それからダンに至り、ダンからシドンにまわり、

then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and round about to Sidon,

またツロの要害に行き、ヒビびと、およびカナンびとのすべての町に行き、ユダのネゲブに出てベエルシバへ行った。

and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beer-sheba.

こうして彼らは国をあまねく行き巡って、九か月と二十日を経てエルサレムにきた。

So when they had gone to and from through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

そしてヨアブは民の総数を王に告げた。すなわちイスラエルには、つるぎを抜く勇士たちが八十万あった。ただしユダの人々は五十万であった。

And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

しかしダビデは民を数えた後、心に責められた。そこでダビデは主に言った、「わたしはこれをおこなって大きな罪を犯しました。しかし主よ、今どうぞしもべの罪を取り去ってください。わたしはひじょうに愚かなことをいたしました」。

And David`s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto Jehovah, I have sinned greatly in that which I have done: but now, O Jehovah, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

ダビデが朝起きたとき、主の言葉はダビデの先見者である預言者ガデに臨んで言った、

And when David rose up in the morning, the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet Gad, David`s seer, saying,

「行ってダビデに言いなさい、『主はこう仰せられる、「わたしは三つのことを示す。あなたはその一つを選ぶがよい。わたしはそれをあなたに行うであろう」と』」。

Go and speak unto David, Thus saith Jehovah, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

ガデはダビデのもとにきて、彼に言った、「あなたの国に三年のききんをこさせようか。あなたが敵に追われて三か月敵の前に逃げるようにしようか。それとも、あなたの国に三日の疫病をおくろうか。あなたは考えて、わたしがどの答を、わたしをつかわされた方になすべきかを決めなさい」。

So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy foes while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days` pestilence in thy land? now advise thee, and consider what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

ダビデはガデに言った、「わたしはひじょうに悩んでいますが、主のあわれみは大きいゆえ、われわれを主の手に陥らせてください。わたしを人の手には陥らせないでください」。

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of Jehovah; for his mercies are great; and let me not fall into the hand of man.

そこで主は朝から定めの時まで疫病をイスラエルに下された。ダンからベエルシバまでに民の死んだ者は七万人あった。

So Jehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

天の使が手をエルサレムに伸べてこれを滅ぼそうとしたが、主はこの害悪を悔い、民を滅ぼしている天の使に言われた、「もはや、じゅうぶんである。今あなたの手をとどめるがよい」。その時、主の使はエブスびとアラウナの打ち場のかたわらにいた。

And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, Jehovah repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough; now stay thy hand. And the angel of Jehovah was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

ダビデは民を撃っている天の使を見た時、主に言った、「わたしは罪を犯しました。わたしは悪を行いました。しかしこれらの羊たちは何をしたのですか。どうぞあなたの手をわたしとわたしの父の家に向けてください」。

And David spake unto Jehovah when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father`s house.

その日ガデはダビデのところにきて彼に言った、「上って行ってエブスびとアラウナの打ち場で主に祭壇を建てなさい」。

And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

ダビデはガデの言葉に従い、主の命じられたように上って行った。

And David went up according to the saying of Gad, as Jehovah commanded.

アラウナは見おろして、王とそのしもべたちが自分の方に進んでくるのを見たので、アラウナは出てきて王の前に地にひれ伏して拝した。

And Araunah looked forth, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

そしてアラウナは言った、「どうして王わが主は、しもべの所にこられましたか」。ダビデは言った、「あなたから打ち場を買い取り、主に祭壇を築いて民に下る災をとどめるためです」。

And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar unto Jehovah, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

アラウナはダビデに言った、「どうぞ王、わが主のよいと思われる物を取ってささげてください。燔祭にする牛もあります。たきぎにする打穀機も牛のくびきもあります。

And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, the oxen for the burnt-offering, and the threshing instruments and the yokes of the oxen for the wood:

王よ、アラウナはこれをことごとく王にささげます」。アラウナはまた王に、「あなたの神、主があなたを受けいれられますように」と言った。

all this, O king, doth Araunah give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, Jehovah thy God accept thee.

しかし王はアラウナに言った、「いいえ、代価を支払ってそれをあなたから買い取ります。わたしは費用をかけずに燔祭をわたしの神、主にささげることはしません」。こうしてダビデは銀五十シケルで打ち場と牛とを買い取った。

And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will verily buy it of thee at a price. Neither will I offer burnt-offerings unto Jehovah my God which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

ダビデはその所で主に祭壇を築き、燔祭と酬恩祭をささげた。そこで主はその地のために祈を聞かれたので、災がイスラエルに下ることはとどまった。

And David built there an altar unto Jehovah, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. So Jehovah was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
