Solomon's temple and the division of the kingdom

The reign of Solomon — including the construction of the Jerusalem temple and his proverbial wisdom — followed by the schism of the kingdom into Israel and Judah, and the rise of the prophets Elijah and Elisha.

第1章

ダビデ王は年がすすんで老い、夜着を着せても暖まらなかったので、

Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.

その家来たちは彼に言った、「王わが主のために、ひとりの若いおとめを捜し求めて王にはべらせ、王の付添いとし、あなたのふところに寝て、王わが主を暖めさせましょう」。

Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and cherish him; and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.

そして彼らはあまねくイスラエルの領土に美しいおとめを捜し求めて、シュナミびとアビシャグを得、王のもとに連れてきた。

So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the borders of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

おとめは非常に美しく、王の付添いとなって王に仕えたが、王は彼女を知ることがなかった。

And the damsel was very fair; and she cherished the king, and ministered to him; but the king knew her not.

さてハギテの子アドニヤは高ぶって、「わたしは王となろう」と言い、自分のために戦車と騎兵および自分の前に駆ける者五十人を備えた。

Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

彼の父は彼が生れてこのかた一度も「なぜ、そのような事をするのか」と言って彼をたしなめたことがなかった。アドニヤもまた非常に姿の良い人であって、アブサロムの次に生れた者である。

And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he was also a very goodly man; and he was born after Absalom.

And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.

But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men that belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.

アドニヤはエンロゲルのほとりにある「へびの石」のかたわらで、羊と牛と肥えた家畜をほふって、王の子である自分の兄弟たち、および王の家来であるユダの人々をことごとく招いた。

And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En-rogel; and he called all his brethren, the king`s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king`s servants:

しかし預言者ナタンと、ベナヤと、勇士たちと、自分の兄弟ソロモンとは招かなかった。

but Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.

時にナタンはソロモンの母バテシバに言った、「ハギテの子アドニヤが王となったのをお聞きになりませんでしたか。われわれの主ダビデはそれをごぞんじないのです。

Then Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?

それでいま、あなたに計りごとを授けて、あなたの命と、あなたの子ソロモンの命を救うようにいたしましょう。

Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.

あなたはすぐダビデ王のところへ行って、『王わが主よ、あなたは、はしために誓って、おまえの子ソロモンが、わたしに次いで王となり、わたしの位に座するであろうと言われたではありませんか。そうであるのに、どうしてアドニヤが王となったのですか』と言いなさい。

Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thy handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?

あなたがなお王と話しておられる間に、わたしもまた、あなたのあとから、はいって行って、あなたの言葉を確認しましょう」。

Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.

そこでバテシバは寝室にはいって王の所へ行った。（王は非常に老いて、シュナミびとアビシャグが王に仕えていた）。

And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering unto the king.

バテシバは身をかがめて王を拝した。王は言った、「何の用か」。

And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?

彼女は王に言った、「わが主よ、あなたは、あなたの神、主をさして、はしために誓い、『おまえの子ソロモンがわたしに次いで王となり、わたしの位に座するであろう』と言われました。

And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by Jehovah thy God unto thy handmaid, [saying], Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.

そうであるのに、ごらんなさい、今アドニヤが王となりました。王わが主よ、あなたはそれをごぞんじないのです。

And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and thou, my lord the king, knowest it not:

彼は牛と肥えた家畜と羊をたくさんほふって、王の子たち、および祭司アビヤタルと、軍の長ヨアブを招きましたが、あなたのしもべソロモンは招きませんでした。

and he hath slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host; but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.

王わが主よ、イスラエルのすべての目はあなたに注がれ、だれがあなたに次いで、王わが主の位に座すべきかを告げられるのを望んでいます。

And thou, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

王わが主が先祖と共に眠られるとき、わたしと、わたしの子ソロモンは謀叛人とみなされるでしょう」。

Otherwise it will come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.

バテシバがなお王と話しているうちに、預言者ナタンがはいってきた。

And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.

人々は王に告げて、「預言者ナタンがここにおります」と言った。彼は王の前にはいり、地に伏して王を拝した。

And they told the king, saying, Behold, Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

そしてナタンは言った、「王わが主よ、あなたは、『アドニヤがわたしに次いで王となり、わたしの位に座するであろう』と仰せられましたか。

And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?

彼はきょう下っていって、牛と、肥えた家畜と羊をたくさんほふって、王の子たちと、軍の長ヨアブと、祭司アビヤタルを招きました。彼らはアドニヤの前で食い飲みして、『アドニヤ万歳』と言いました。

For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king`s sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and say, [Long] live king Adonijah.

しかし、あなたのしもべであるわたしと、祭司ザドクと、エホヤダの子ベナヤと、あなたのしもべソロモンを招きませんでした。

But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.

この事は王わが主がさせられた事ですか。あなたはしもべたちに、だれがあなたに次いで王わが主の位に座すべきかを告げられませんでした」。

Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not showed unto thy servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?

ダビデ王は答えて言った、「バテシバをわたしのところに呼びなさい」。彼女は王の前にはいってきて、王の前に立った。

Then king David answered and said, Call to me Bath-sheba. And she came into the king`s presence, and stood before the king.

すると王は誓って言った、「わたしの命をすべての苦難から救われた主は生きておられる。

And the king sware, and said, As Jehovah liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

わたしがイスラエルの神、主をさしてあなたに誓い、『あなたの子ソロモンがわたしに次いで王となり、わたしに代って、わたしの位に座するであろう』と言ったように、わたしはきょう、そのようにしよう」。

verily as I sware unto thee by Jehovah, the God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; verily so will I do this day.

そこでバテシバは身をかがめ、地に伏して王を拝し、「わが主ダビデ王が、とこしえに生きながらえられますように」と言った。

Then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did obeisance to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.

ダビデは言った、「祭司ザドクと、預言者ナタンおよびエホヤダの子ベナヤをわたしの所に呼びなさい」。やがて彼らは王の前にきた。

And king David said, Call to me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.

王は彼らに言った、「あなたがたの主君の家来たちを連れ、わが子ソロモンをわたしの騾馬に乗せ、彼を導いてギホンに下り、

And the king said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:

その所で祭司ザドクと預言者ナタンは彼に油を注いでイスラエルの王としなさい。そしてラッパを吹いて、『ソロモン王万歳』と言いなさい。

and let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel; and blow ye the trumpet, and say, [Long] live king Solomon.

それから、あなたがたは彼に従って上ってきなさい。彼はきて、わたしの位に座し、わたしに代って王となるであろう。わたしは彼を立ててイスラエルとユダの上に主君とする」。

Then ye shall come up after him, and he shall come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead; and I have appointed him to be prince over Israel and over Judah.

エホヤダの子ベナヤは王に答えて言った、「アァメン、願わくは、王わが主君の神、主もまたそう仰せられますように。

And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: Jehovah, the God of my lord the king, say so [too].

願わくは、主が王わが主君と共におられたように、ソロモンと共におられて、その位をわが主君ダビデ王の位よりも大きくせられますように」。

As Jehovah hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.

そこで祭司ザドクと預言者ナタンおよびエホヤダの子ベナヤ、ならびにケレテびとと、ペレテびとは下って行って、ソロモンをダビデ王の騾馬に乗せ、彼をギホンに導いて行った。

So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David`s mule, and brought him to Gihon.

祭司ザドクは幕屋から油の角を取ってきて、ソロモンに油を注いだ。そしてラッパを吹き鳴らし、民は皆「ソロモン王万歳」と言った。

And Zadok the priest took the horn of oil out of the Tent, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, [Long] live king Solomon.

民はみな彼に従って上り、笛を吹いて大いに喜び祝った。地は彼らの声で裂けるばかりであった。

And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.

アドニヤおよび彼と共にいた客たちは皆食事を終ったとき、これを聞いた。ヨアブはラッパの音を聞いて言った、「町の中のあの騒ぎは何か」。

And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?

彼の言葉のなお終らないうちに、そこへ祭司アビヤタルの子ヨナタンがきたので、アドニヤは彼に言った、「はいりなさい。あなたは勇敢な人で、よい知らせを持ってきたのでしょう」。

While he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said, Come in; for thou art a worthy man, and bringest good tidings.

ヨナタンは答えてアドニヤに言った、「いいえ、主君ダビデ王はソロモンを王とせられました。

And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king:

王は祭司ザドクと預言者ナタンおよびエホヤダの子ベナヤ、ならびにケレテびとと、ペレテびとをソロモンと共につかわされたので、彼らはソロモンを王の騾馬に乗せて行き、

and the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride upon the king`s mule;

祭司ザドクと預言者ナタンはギホンで彼に油を注いで王としました。そして彼らがそこから喜んで上って来るので、町が騒がしいのです。あなたが聞いた声はそれなのです。

and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon; and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.

こうしてソロモンは王の位に座し、

And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.

かつ王の家来たちがきて、主君ダビデ王に祝いを述べて、『願わくは、あなたの神がソロモンの名をあなたの名よりも高くし、彼の位をあなたの位よりも大きくされますように』と言いました。そして王は床の上で拝されました。

And moreover the king`s servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, Thy God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne: and the king bowed himself upon the bed.

王はまたこう言われました、『イスラエルの神、主はほむべきかな。主はきょう、わたしの位に座するひとりの子を与えて、これをわたしに見せてくださった』と」。

And also thus said the king, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, who hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.

その時アドニヤと共にいた客はみな驚き、立っておのおの自分の道に去って行った。

And all the guests of Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.

そしてアドニヤはソロモンを恐れ、立って行って祭壇の角をつかんだ。

And Adonijah feared because of Solomon; and he arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.

ある人がこれをソロモンに告げて言った、「アドニヤはソロモンを恐れ、今彼は祭壇の角をつかんで、『どうぞ、ソロモン王がきょう、つるぎをもってしもべを殺さないとわたしに誓ってくださるように』と言っています」。

And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon; for, lo, he hath laid hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me first that he will not slay his servant with the sword.

ソロモンは言った、「もし彼がよい人となるならば、その髪の毛ひとすじも地に落ちることはなかろう。しかし彼のうちに悪のあることがわかるならば、彼は死ななければならない」。

And Solomon said, If he shall show himself a worthy man, there shall not a hair of him fall to the earth; but if wickedness be found in him, he shall die.

ソロモンは人をつかわして彼を祭壇からつれて下らせた。彼がきてソロモンを拝したので、ソロモンは彼に「家に帰りなさい」と言った。

So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and did obeisance to king Solomon; and Solomon said unto him, Go to thy house.

第2章

ダビデの死ぬ日が近づいたので、彼はその子ソロモンに命じて言った、

Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,

「わたしは世のすべての人の行く道を行こうとしている。あなたは強く、男らしくなければならない。

I am going the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and show thyself a man;

あなたの神、主のさとしを守り、その道に歩み、その定めと戒めと、おきてとあかしとを、モーセの律法にしるされているとおりに守らなければならない。そうすれば、あなたがするすべての事と、あなたの向かうすべての所で、あなたは栄えるであろう。

and keep the charge of Jehovah thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, [and] his commandments, and his ordinances, and his testimonies, according to that which is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself.

また主がさきにわたしについて語って『もしおまえの子たちが、その道を慎み、心をつくし、精神をつくして真実をもって、わたしの前に歩むならば、おまえに次いでイスラエルの位にのぼる人が、欠けることはなかろう』と言われた言葉を確実にされるであろう。

That Jehovah may establish his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.

またあなたはゼルヤの子ヨアブがわたしにした事、すなわち彼がイスラエルのふたりの軍の長ネルの子アブネルと、エテルの子アマサにした事を知っている。彼はこのふたりを殺して、戦争で流した地を太平の時に報い、罪のない者の血をわたしの腰のまわりの帯と、わたしの足のくつにつけた。

Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did unto me, even what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.

それゆえ、あなたの知恵にしたがって事を行い、彼のしらがを安らかに陰府に下らせてはならない。

Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to Sheol in peace.

ただしギレアデびとバルジライの子らには恵みを施し、彼らをあなたの食卓で食事する人々のうちに加えなさい。彼らはわたしがあなたの兄弟アブサロムを避けて逃げた時、わたしを迎えてくれたからである。

But show kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table; for so they came to me when I fled from Absalom thy brother.

またバホリムのベニヤミンびとゲラの子シメイがあなたと共にいる。彼はわたしがマハナイムへ行った時、激しいのろいの言葉をもってわたしをのろった。しかし彼がヨルダンへ下ってきて、わたしを迎えたので、わたしは主をさして彼に誓い、『わたしはつるぎをもってあなたを殺さない』と言った。

And, behold, there is with thee Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, of Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim; but he came down to meet me at the Jordan, and I sware to him by Jehovah, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.

しかし彼を罪のない者としてはならない。あなたは知恵のある人であるから、彼になすべき事を知っている。あなたは彼のしらがを血に染めて陰府に下らせなければならない」。

Now therefore hold him not guiltless, for thou art a wise man; and thou wilt know what thou oughtest to do unto him, and thou shalt bring his hoar head down to Sheol with blood.

ダビデはその先祖と共に眠って、ダビデの町に葬られた。

And David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

ダビデがイスラエルを治めた日数は四十年であった。すなわちヘブロンで七年、エルサレムで三十三年、王であった。

And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.

このようにしてソロモンは父ダビデの位に座し、国は堅く定まった。

And Solomon sat upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.

さて、ハギテの子アドニヤがソロモンの母バテシバのところへきたので、バテシバは言った、「あなたは穏やかな事のためにきたのですか」。彼は言った、「穏やかな事のためです」。

Then Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.

彼はまた言った、「あなたに申しあげる事があります」。バテシバは言った、「言いなさい」。

He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on.

彼は言った、「ごぞんじのように、国はわたしのもので、イスラエルの人は皆わたしが王になるものと期待していました。しかし国は転じて、わたしの兄弟のものとなりました。彼のものとなったのは、主から出たことです。

And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother`s; for it was his from Jehovah.

今わたしはあなたに一つのお願いがあります。断らないでください」。バテシバは彼に言った、「言いなさい」。

And now I ask one petition of thee; deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.

彼は言った、「どうかソロモン王に請うて、――王はあなたに断るようなことはないでしょうから――シュナミびとアビシャグをわたしに与えて妻にさせてください」。

And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king (for he will not say thee nay), that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.

バテシバは言った、「よろしい。わたしはあなたのために王に話しましょう」。

And Bath-sheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king.

バテシバはアドニヤのためにソロモン王に話すため、王のもとへ行った。王は立って迎え、彼女を拝して王座に着き、王母のために座を設けさせたので、彼女は王の右に座した。

Bath-sheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a throne to be set for the king`s mother; and she sat on his right hand.

そこでバテシバは言った、「あなたに一つの小さいお願いがあります。お断りにならないでください」。王は彼女に言った、「母上よ、あなたの願いを言ってください。わたしは断らないでしょう」。

Then she said, I ask one small petition of thee; deny me not. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother; for I will not deny thee.

彼女は言った、「どうぞ、シュナミびとアビシャグをあなたの兄弟アドニヤに与えて、妻にさせてください」。

And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.

ソロモン王は答えて母に言った、「どうしてアドニヤのためにシュナミびとアビシャグを求められるのですか。彼のためには国をも求めなさい。彼はわたしの兄で、彼の味方には祭司アビヤタルとゼルヤの子ヨアブがいるのですから」。

And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.

そしてソロモン王は主をさして誓って言った、「もしアドニヤがこの言葉によって自分の命を失うのでなければ、どんなにでもわたしを罰してください。

Then king Solomon sware by Jehovah, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah hath not spoken this word against his own life.

わたしを立てて、父ダビデの位にのぼらせ、主が約束されたように、わたしに一家を与えてくださった主は生きておられる。アドニヤはきょう殺されなければならない」。

Now therefore as Jehovah liveth, who hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me a house, as he promised, surely Adonijah shall be put to death this day.

ソロモン王はエホヤダの子ベナヤをつかわしたので、彼はアドニヤを撃って殺した。

And king Solomon sent by Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him, so that he died.

王はまた祭司アビヤタルに言った、「あなたの領地アナトテへ行きなさい。あなたは死に当る者ですが、さきにわたしの父ダビデの前に神、主の箱をかつぎ、またすべてわたしの父が受けた苦しみを、あなたも共に苦しんだので、わたしは、きょうは、あなたを殺しません」。

And unto Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord Jehovah before David my father, and because thou wast afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted.

そしてソロモンはアビヤタルを主の祭司職から追放した。こうして主がシロでエリの家について言われた主の言葉が成就した。

So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto Jehovah, that he might fulfil the word of Jehovah, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

さてこの知らせがヨアブに達したので、ヨアブは主の幕屋にのがれて、祭壇の角をつかんだ。ヨアブはアブサロムを支持しなかったけれども、アドニヤを支持したからである。

And the tidings came to Joab; for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the Tent of Jehovah, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.

ヨアブが主の幕屋にのがれて、祭壇のかたわらにいることを、ソロモン王に告げる者があったので、ソロモン王はエホヤダの子ベナヤをつかわし、「行って彼を撃て」と言った。

And it was told king Solomon, Joab is fled unto the Tent of Jehovah, and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him.

ベナヤは主の幕屋へ行って彼に言った、「王はあなたに、出て来るようにと申されます」。しかし彼は言った、「いや、わたしはここで死にます」。ベナヤは王に復命して言った、「ヨアブはこう申しました。またわたしにこう答えました」。

And Benaiah came to the Tent of Jehovah, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.

そこで王はベナヤに言った、「彼が言うようにし、彼を撃ち殺して葬り、ヨアブがゆえなく流した血のとがをわたしと、わたしの父の家から除き去りなさい。

And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the blood, which Joab shed without cause, from me and from my father`s house.

主はまたヨアブが血を流した行為を、彼自身のこうべに報いられるであろう。これは彼が自分よりも正しいすぐれたふたりの人、すなわちイスラエルの軍の長ネルの子アブネルと、ユダの軍の長エテルの子アマサを、つるぎをもって撃ち殺し、わたしの父ダビデのあずかり知らない事をしたからである。

And Jehovah will return his blood upon his own head, because he fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, and my father David knew it not, [to wit], Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.

それゆえ、彼らの血は永遠にヨアブのこうべと、その子孫のこうべに帰すであろう。しかしダビデと、その子孫と、その家と、その位とには、主から賜わる平安が永久にあるであろう」。

So shall their blood return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but unto David, and unto his seed, and unto his house, and unto his throne, shall there be peace for ever from Jehovah.

そこでエホヤダの子ベナヤは上っていって、彼を撃ち殺した。彼は荒野にある自分の家に葬られた。

Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and slew him; and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.

王はエホヤダの子ベナヤを、ヨアブに代って軍の長とした。王はまた祭司ザドクをアビヤタルに代らせた。

And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host; and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar.

また王は人をつかわし、シメイを召して言った、「あなたはエルサレムのうちに、自分のために家を建てて、そこに住み、そこからどこへも出てはならない。

And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Build thee a house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and go not forth thence any whither.

あなたが出て、キデロン川を渡る日には必ず殺されることを、しかと知らなければならない。あなたの血はあなたのこうべに帰すであろう」。

For on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, know thou for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.

シメイは王に言った、「お言葉は結構です。王、わが主の仰せられるとおりに、しもべはいたしましょう」。こうしてシメイは久しくエルサレムに住んだ。

And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.

ところが三年の後、シメイのふたりの奴隷が、ガテの王マアカの子アキシのところへ逃げ去った。人々がシメイに告げて、「ごらんなさい、あなたの奴隷はガテにいます」と言ったので、

And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish, son of Maacah, king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants are in Gath.

シメイは立って、ろばにくらを置き、ガテのアキシのところへ行って、その奴隷を尋ねた。すなわちシメイは行ってその奴隷をガテから連れてきたが、

And Shimei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish, to seek his servants; and Shimei went, and brought his servants from Gath.

シメイがエルサレムからガテへ行って帰ったことがソロモン王に聞えたので、

And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and was come again.

王は人をつかわし、シメイを召して言った、「わたしはあなたに主をさして誓わせ、かつおごそかにあなたを戒めて、『あなたが出て、どこかへ行く日には、必ず殺されることを、しかと知らなければならない』と言ったではないか。そしてあなたは、わたしに『お言葉は結構です。従います』と言った。

And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not adjure thee by Jehovah, and protest unto thee, saying, Know for certain, that on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any whither, thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The saying that I have heard is good.

ところで、あなたはなぜ主に対する誓いと、わたしが命じた命令を守らなかったのか」。

Why then hast thou not kept the oath of Jehovah, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?

王はまたシメイに言った、「あなたは自分の心に、あなたがわたしの父ダビデにしたもろもろの悪を知っている。主はあなたの悪をあなたのこうべに報いられるであろう。

The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thy heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore Jehovah shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head.

しかしソロモン王は祝福をうけ、ダビデの位は永久に主の前に堅く立つであろう」。

But king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before Jehovah for ever.

王がエホヤダの子ベナヤに命じたので、彼は出ていってシメイを撃ち殺した。こうして国はソロモンの手に堅く立った。

So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out, and fell upon him, so that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

第3章

ソロモン王はエジプトの王パロと縁を結び、パロの娘をめとってダビデの町に連れてきて、自分の家と、主の宮と、エルサレムの周囲の城壁を建て終るまでそこにおらせた。

And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh`s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of Jehovah, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.

そのころまで主の名のために建てた宮がなかったので、民は高き所で犠牲をささげていた。

Only the people sacrificed in the high places, because there was no house built for the name of Jehovah until those days.

ソロモンは主を愛し、父ダビデの定めに歩んだが、ただ彼は高き所で犠牲をささげ、香をたいた。

And Solomon loved Jehovah, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

ある日、王はギベオンへ行って、そこで犠牲をささげようとした。それが主要な高き所であったからである。ソロモンは一千の燔祭をその祭壇にささげた。

And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt-offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.

ギベオンで主は夜の夢にソロモンに現れて言われた、「あなたに何を与えようか、求めなさい」。

In Gibeon Jehovah appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.

ソロモンは言った、「あなたのしもべであるわたしの父ダビデがあなたに対して誠実と公義と真心とをもって、あなたの前に歩んだので、あなたは大いなるいつくしみを彼に示されました。またあなたは彼のために、この大いなるいつくしみをたくわえて、今日、彼の位に座する子を授けられました。

And Solomon said, Thou hast showed unto thy servant David my father great lovingkindness, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great lovingkindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

わが神、主よ、あなたはこのしもべを、わたしの父ダビデに代って王とならせられました。しかし、わたしは小さい子供であって、出入りすることを知りません。

And now, O Jehovah my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child; I know not how to go out or come in.

かつ、しもべはあなたが選ばれた、あなたの民、すなわちその数が多くて、数えることも、調べることもできないほどのおびただしい民の中におります。

And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.

それゆえ、聞きわける心をしもべに与えて、あなたの民をさばかせ、わたしに善悪をわきまえることを得させてください。だれが、あなたのこの大いなる民をさばくことができましょう」。

Give thy servant therefore an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this thy great people?

ソロモンはこの事を求めたので、そのことが主のみこころにかなった。

And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

そこで神は彼に言われた、「あなたはこの事を求めて、自分のために長命を求めず、また自分のために富を求めず、また自分の敵の命をも求めず、ただ訴えをききわける知恵を求めたゆえに、

And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life, neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies, but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern justice;

見よ、わたしはあなたの言葉にしたがって、賢い、英明な心を与える。あなたの先にはあなたに並ぶ者がなく、あなたの後にもあなたに並ぶ者は起らないであろう。

behold, I have done according to thy word: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there hath been none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

わたしはまたあなたの求めないもの、すなわち富と誉をもあなたに与える。あなたの生きているかぎり、王たちのうちにあなたに並ぶ者はないであろう。

And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee, all thy days.

もしあなたが、あなたの父ダビデの歩んだように、わたしの道に歩んで、わたしの定めと命令とを守るならば、わたしはあなたの日を長くするであろう」。

And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.

ソロモンが目をさましてみると、それは夢であった。そこで彼はエルサレムへ行き、主の契約の箱の前に立って燔祭と酬恩祭をささげ、すべての家来のために祝宴を設けた。

And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream: and he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and offered up burnt-offerings, and offered peace-offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.

さて、ふたりの遊女が王のところにきて、王の前に立った。

Then there came two women that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.

ひとりの女は言った、「ああ、わが主よ、この女とわたしとはひとつの家に住んでいますが、わたしはこの女と一緒に家にいる時、子を産みました。

And the one woman said, Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.

ところがわたしの産んだ後、三日目にこの女もまた子を産みました。そしてわたしたちは一緒にいましたが、家にはほかにだれもわたしたちと共にいた者はなく、ただわたしたちふたりだけでした。

And it came to pass the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also; and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.

ところがこの女は自分の子の上に伏したので、夜のうちにその子は死にました。

And this woman`s child died in the night, because she lay upon it.

彼女は夜中に起きて、はしための眠っている間に、わたしの子をわたしのかたわらから取って、自分のふところに寝かせ、自分の死んだ子をわたしのふところに寝かせました。

And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thy handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.

わたしは朝、子に乳を飲ませようとして起きて見ると死んでいました。しかし朝になってよく見ると、それはわたしが産んだ子ではありませんでした」。

And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead; but when I had looked at it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, whom I did bear.

ほかの女は言った、「いいえ、生きているのがわたしの子です。死んだのはあなたの子です」。初めの女は言った、「いいえ、死んだのがあなたの子です。生きているのはわたしの子です」。彼らはこのように王の前に言い合った。

And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.

この時、王は言った、「ひとりは『この生きているのがわたしの子で、死んだのがあなたの子だ』と言い、またひとりは『いいえ、死んだのがあなたの子で、生きているのはわたしの子だ』と言う」。

Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.

そこで王は「刀を持ってきなさい」と言ったので、刀を王の前に持ってきた。

And the king said, Fetch me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.

王は言った、「生きている子を二つに分けて、半分をこちらに、半分をあちらに与えよ」。

And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.

すると生きている子の母である女は、その子のために心がやけるようになって、王に言った、「ああ、わが主よ、生きている子を彼女に与えてください。決してそれを殺さないでください」。しかしほかのひとりは言った、「それをわたしのものにも、あなたのものにもしないで、分けてください」。

Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, It shall be neither mine nor thine; divide it.

すると王は答えて言った、「生きている子を初めの女に与えよ。決して殺してはならない。彼女はその母なのだ」。

Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.

イスラエルは皆王が与えた判決を聞いて王を恐れた。神の知恵が彼のうちにあって、さばきをするのを見たからである。

And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

第4章

ソロモン王はイスラエルの全地の王であった。

And king Solomon was king over all Israel.

彼の高官たちは次のとおりである。ザドクの子アザリヤは祭司。

And these were the princes whom he had: Azariah the son of Zadok, the priest;

シシャの子エリホレフとアヒヤは書記官。アヒルデの子ヨシャバテは史官。

Elihoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha, scribes; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, the recorder;

エホヤダの子ベナヤは軍の長。ザドクとアビヤタルは祭司。

and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the host; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;

ナタンの子アザリヤは代官の長。ナタンの子ザブデは祭司で、王の友であった。

and Azariah the son of Nathan was over the officers; and Zabud the son of Nathan was chief minister, [and] the king`s friend;

アヒシャルは宮内卿。アブダの子アドニラムは徴募の長であった。

and Ahishar was over the household; and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the men subject to taskwork.

ソロモンはまたイスラエルの全地に十二人の代官を置いた。その人々は王とその家のために食物を備えた。すなわちおのおの一年に一月ずつ食物を備えるのであった。

And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, who provided victuals for the king and his household: each man had to make provision for a month in the year.

その名は次のとおりである。エフライムの山地にはベンホル。

And these are their names: Ben-hur, in the hill-country of Ephraim;

マカヅと、シャラビムと、ベテシメシと、エロン・ベテハナンにはベンデケル。

Ben-deker, in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Beth-shemesh, and Elon-beth-hanan;

アルボテにはベンヘセデ、（彼はソコとヘペルの全地を担当した）。

Ben-hesed, in Arubboth (to him [pertained] Socoh, and all the land of Hepher);

ドルの高地の全部にはベン・アビナダブ、（彼はソロモンの娘タパテを妻とした）。

Ben-abinadab, in all the height of Dor (he had Taphath the daughter of Solomon to wife);

アヒルデの子バアナはタアナクとメギドと、エズレルの下、ザレタンのかたわらにあるベテシャンの全地を担当して、ベテシャンからアベル・メホラに至り、ヨクメアムの向こうにまで及んだ。

Baana the son of Ahilud, in Taanach and Megiddo, and all Beth-shean which is beside Zarethan, beneath Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-meholah, as far as beyond Jokmeam;

ラモテ・ギレアデにはベンゲベル、（彼はギレアデにあるマナセの子ヤイルの村々を担当し、またバシャンにあるアルゴブの地方の城壁と青銅の貫の木のある大きな町六十を担当した）。

Ben-geber, in Ramoth-gilead (to him [pertained] the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead; [even] to him [pertained] the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, threescore great cities with walls and brazen bars);

マハナイムにはイドの子アヒナダブ。

Ahinadab the son of Iddo, in Mahanaim;

ナフタリにはアヒマアズ、（彼もソロモンの娘バスマテを妻にめとった）。

Ahimaaz, in Naphtali (he also took Basemath the daughter of Solomon to wife);

アセルとベアロテにはホシャイの子バアナ。

Baana the son of Hushai, in Asher and Bealoth;

イッサカルにはパルアの子ヨシャパテ。

Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar;

ベニヤミンにはエラの子シメイ。

Shimei the son of Ela, in Benjamin;

アモリびとの王シホンの地およびバシャンの王オグの地なるギレアデの地にはウリの子ゲベル。彼はその地のただひとりの代官であった。

Geber the son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan; and [he was] the only officer that was in the land.

ユダとイスラエルの人々は多くて、海べの砂のようであったが、彼らは飲み食いして楽しんだ。

Judah and Israel were many as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking and making merry.

ソロモンはユフラテ川からペリシテびとの地と、エジプトの境に至るまでの諸国を治めたので、皆みつぎ物を携えてきて、ソロモンの一生のあいだ仕えた。

And Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought tribute, and served Solomon all the days of his life.

さてソロモンの一日の食物は細かい麦粉三十コル、荒い麦粉六十コル、

And Solomon`s provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour, and threescore measures of meal,

肥えた牛十頭、牧場の牛二十頭、羊百頭で、そのほかに雄じか、かもしか、こじか、および肥えた鳥があった。

ten fat oxen, and twenty oxen out of the pastures, and a hundred sheep, besides harts, and gazelles, and roebucks, and fatted fowl.

これはソロモンがユフラテ川の西の地方をテフサからガザまで、ことごとく治めたからである。すなわち彼はユフラテ川の西の諸王をことごとく治め、周囲至る所に平安を得た。

For he had dominion over all [the region] on this side the River, from Tiphsah even to Gaza, over all the kings on this side the River: and he had peace on all sides round about him.

ソロモンの一生の間、ユダとイスラエルはダンからベエルシバに至るまで、安らかにおのおの自分たちのぶどうの木の下と、いちじくの木の下に住んだ。

And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig-tree, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon.

ソロモンはまた戦車の馬の、うまや四千と、騎兵一万二千を持っていた。

And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.

そしてそれらの代官たちはおのおの当番の月にソロモン王のため、およびすべてソロモン王の食卓に連なる者のために、食物を備えて欠けることのないようにした。

And those officers provided victuals for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon`s table, every man in his month; they let nothing be lacking.

また彼らはおのおのその割当にしたがって馬および早馬に食わせる大麦とわらを、その馬のいる所に持ってきた。

Barley also and straw for the horses and swift steeds brought they unto the place where [the officers] were, every man according to his charge.

神はソロモンに非常に多くの知恵と悟りを授け、また海べの砂原のように広い心を授けられた。

And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea-shore.

ソロモンの知恵は東の人々の知恵とエジプトのすべての知恵にまさった。

And Solomon`s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east, and all the wisdom of Egypt.

彼はすべての人よりも賢く、エズラびとエタンよりも、またマホルの子ヘマン、カルコル、ダルダよりも賢く、その名声は周囲のすべての国々に聞えた。

For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all the nations round about.

彼はまた箴言三千を説いた。またその歌は一千五首あった。

And he spake three thousand proverbs; and his songs were a thousand and five.

彼はまた草木のことを論じてレバノンの香柏から石がきにはえるヒソプにまで及んだ。彼はまた獣と鳥と這うものと魚のことを論じた。

And he spake of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall; he spake also of beasts, and of birds, and of creeping things, and of fishes.

諸国の人々はソロモンの知恵を聞くためにきた。地の諸王はソロモンの知恵を聞いて人をつかわした。

And there came of all peoples to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom.

第5章

さてツロの王ヒラムは、ソロモンが油を注がれ、その父に代って、王となったのを聞いて、家来をソロモンにつかわした。ヒラムは常にダビデを愛したからである。

And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.

そこでソロモンはヒラムに人をつかわして言った、

And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,

「あなたの知られるとおり、父ダビデはその周囲にあった敵との戦いのゆえに、彼の神、主の名のために宮を建てることができず、主が彼らをその足の裏の下に置かれるのを待ちました。

Thou knowest how that David my father could not build a house for the name of Jehovah his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until Jehovah put them under the soles of his feet.

ところが今わが神、主はわたしに四方の太平を賜わって、敵もなく、災もなくなったので、

But now Jehovah my God hath given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary, nor evil occurrence.

主が父ダビデに『おまえに代って、おまえの位に、わたしがつかせるおまえの子、その人がわが名のために宮を建てるであろう』と言われたように、わが神、主の名のために宮を建てようと思います。

And, behold, I purpose to build a house for the name of Jehovah my God, as Jehovah spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build the house for my name.

それゆえ、あなたは命令を下して、レバノンの香柏をわたしのために切り出させてください。わたしのしもべたちをあなたのしもべたちと一緒に働かせます。またわたしはすべてあなたのおっしゃるとおり、あなたのしもべたちの賃銀をあなたに払います。あなたの知られるとおり、わたしたちのうちにはシドンびとのように木を切るに巧みな人がないからです」。

Now therefore command thou that they cut me cedar-trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants; and I will give thee hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt say: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that knoweth how to cut timber like unto the Sidonians.

ヒラムはソロモンの言葉を聞いて大いに喜び、「きょう、主はあがむべきかな。主はこのおびただしい民を治める賢い子をダビデに賜わった」と言った。

And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be Jehovah this day, who hath given unto David a wise son over this great people.

そしてヒラムはソロモンに人をつかわして言った、「わたしはあなたが申しおくられたことを聞きました。香柏の材木と、いとすぎの材木については、すべてお望みのようにいたします。

And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have heard [the message] which thou hast sent unto me: I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.

わたしのしもべどもにそれをレバノンから海に運びおろさせましょう。わたしはそれをいかだに組んで、海路、あなたの指示される場所まで送り、そこでそれをくずしましょう。あなたはそれを受け取ってください。また、あなたはわたしの家のために食物を供給して、わたしの望みをかなえてください」。

My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea; and I will make them into rafts to go by sea unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be broken up there, and thou shalt receive them; and thou shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.

こうしてヒラムはソロモンにすべて望みのように香柏の材木と、いとすぎの材木を与えた。

So Hiram gave Solomon timber of cedar and timber of fir according to all his desire.

またソロモンはヒラムにその家の食物として小麦二万コルを与え、またオリブをつぶして取った油二万コルを与えた。このようにソロモンは年々ヒラムに与えた。

And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.

主は約束されたようにソロモンに知恵を賜わった。またヒラムとソロモンの間は平和であって、彼らふたりは条約を結んだ。

And Jehovah gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together.

ソロモン王はイスラエルの全地から強制的に労働者を徴募した。その徴募人員は三万人であった。

And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty thousand men.

ソロモンは彼らを一か月交代に一万人ずつレバノンにつかわした。すなわち一か月レバノンに、二か月家にあり、アドニラムは徴募の監督であった。

And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses; a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home; and Adoniram was over the men subject to taskwork.

ソロモンにはまた荷を負う者が七万人、山で石を切る者が八万人あった。

And Solomon had threescore and ten thousand that bare burdens, and fourscore thousand that were hewers in the mountains;

ほかにソロモンには工事を監督する上役の官吏が三千三百人あって、工事に働く民を監督した。

besides Solomon`s chief officers that were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, who bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.

王は命じて大きい高価な石を切り出させ、切り石をもって宮の基をすえさせた。

And the king commanded, and they hewed out great stones, costly stones, to lay the foundation of the house with wrought stone.

こうしてソロモンの建築者と、ヒラムの建築者およびゲバルびとは石を切り、材木と石とを宮を建てるために備えた。

And Solomon`s builders and Hiram`s builders and the Gebalites did fashion them, and prepared the timber and the stones to build the house.

第6章

イスラエルの人々がエジプトの地を出て後四百八十年、ソロモンがイスラエルの王となって第四年のジフの月すなわち二月に、ソロモンは主のために宮を建てることを始めた。

And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon`s reign over Israel, in the month Ziv, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of Jehovah.

ソロモン王が主のために建てた宮は長さ六十キュビト、幅二十キュビト、高さ三十キュビトであった。

And the house which king Solomon built for Jehovah, the length thereof was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty [cubits], and the height thereof thirty cubits.

宮の拝殿の前の廊は宮の幅にしたがって長さ二十キュビト、その幅は宮の前で十キュビトであった。

And the porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house; [and] ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house.

彼は宮に、内側の広い枠の窓を造った。

And for the house he made windows of fixed lattice-work.

また宮の壁につけて周囲に脇屋を設け、宮の壁すなわち拝殿と本殿の壁の周囲に建てめぐらし、宮の周囲に脇間があるようにした。

And against the wall of the house he built stories round about, against the walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the oracle; and he made side-chambers round about.

下の脇間は広さ五キュビト、中の広さ六キュビト、第三のは広さ七キュビトであった。宮の外側には壁に段を造って、梁を宮の壁の中に差し込まないようにした。

The nethermost story was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad; for on the outside he made offsets [in the wall] of the house round about, that [the beams] should not have hold in the walls of the house.

宮は建てる時に、石切り場で切り整えた石をもって造ったので、建てている間は宮のうちには、つちも、おのも、その他の鉄器もその音が聞えなかった。

And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready at the quarry; and there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.

下の脇間の入口は宮の右側にあり、回り階段によって中の脇間に、中の脇間から第三の脇間にのぼった。

The door for the middle side-chambers was in the right side of the house: and they went up by winding stairs into the middle [story], and out of the middle into the third.

こうして彼は宮を建て終り、香柏のたるきと板をもって宮の天井を造った。

So he built the house, and finished it; and he covered the house with beams and planks of cedar.

また宮につけて、おのおの高さ五キュビトの脇間のある脇屋を建てめぐらし、香柏の材木をもって宮に接続させた。

And he built the stories against all the house, each five cubits high: and they rested on the house with timber of cedar.

そこで主の言葉がソロモンに臨んだ、

And the word of Jehovah came to Solomon, saying,

「あなたが建てるこの宮については、もしあなたがわたしの定めに歩み、おきてを行い、すべての戒めを守り、それに従って歩むならば、わたしはあなたの父ダビデに約束したことを成就する。

Concerning this house which thou art building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute mine ordinances, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I establish my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father.

そしてわたしはイスラエルの人々のうちに住み、わたしの民イスラエルを捨てることはない」。

And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.

こうしてソロモンは宮を建て終った。

So Solomon built the house, and finished it.

彼は香柏の板をもって宮の壁の内側を張った。すなわち宮の床から天井のたるきまで香柏の板で張った。また、いとすぎの板をもって宮の床を張った。

And he built the walls of the house within with boards of cedar: from the floor of the house unto the walls of the ceiling, he covered them on the inside with wood; and he covered the floor of the house with boards of fir.

また宮の奥に二十キュビトの室を床から天井のたるきまで香柏の板をもって造った。すなわち宮の内に至聖所としての本堂を造った。

And he built twenty cubits on the hinder part of the house with boards of cedar from the floor unto the walls [of the ceiling]: he built [them] for it within, for an oracle, even for the most holy place.

宮すなわち本殿の前にある拝殿は長さ四十キュビトであった。

And the house, that is, the temple before [the oracle], was forty cubits [long].

宮の内側の香柏の板は、ひさごの形と、咲いた花を浮彫りにしたもので、みな香柏の板で、石は見えなかった。

And there was cedar on the house within, carved with knops and open flowers: all was cedar; there was no stone seen.

そして主の契約の箱を置くために、宮の内の奥に本殿を設けた。

And he prepared an oracle in the midst of the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of Jehovah.

本殿は長さ二十キュビト、幅二十キュビト、高さ二十キュビトであって、純金でこれをおおった。また香柏の祭壇を造った。

And within the oracle was [a space of] twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof; and he overlaid it with pure gold: and he covered the altar with cedar.

ソロモンは純金をもって宮の内側をおおい、本殿の前に金の鎖をもって隔てを造り、金をもってこれをおおった。

So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he drew chains of gold across before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold.

また金をもって残らず宮をおおい、ついに宮を飾ることをことごとく終えた。また本殿に属する祭壇をことごとく金でおおった。

And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until all the house was finished: also the whole altar that belonged to the oracle he overlaid with gold.

本殿のうちにオリブの木をもって二つのケルビムを造った。その高さはおのおの十キュビト。

And in the oracle he made two cherubim of olive-wood, each ten cubits high.

そのケルブの一つの翼の長さは五キュビト、またそのケルブの他の翼の長さも五キュビトであった。一つの翼の端から他の翼の端までは十キュビトあった。

And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the one wing unto the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits.

他のケルブも十キュビトであって、二つのケルビムは同じ寸法、同じ形であった。

And the other cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubim were of one measure and one form.

このケルブの高さは十キュビト、かのケルブの高さも同じであった。

The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was it of the other cherub.

ソロモンは宮のうちの奥にケルビムをすえた。ケルビムの翼を伸ばしたところ、このケルブの翼はこの壁に達し、かのケルブの翼はかの壁に達し、他の二つの翼は宮の中で互に触れ合った。

And he set the cherubim within the inner house; and the wings of the cherubim were stretched forth, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house.

彼は金をもってそのケルビムをおおった。

And he overlaid the cherubim with gold.

彼は宮の周囲の壁に、内外の室とも皆ケルビムと、しゅろの木と、咲いた花の形の彫り物を刻み、

And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubim and palm-trees and open flowers, within and without.

宮の床は、内外の室とも金でおおった。

And the floor of the house he overlaid with gold, within and without.

本殿の入口にはオリブの木のとびらを造った。そのとびらの上のかまちと脇柱とで五辺形をなしていた。

And for the entrance of the oracle he made doors of olive-wood: the lintel [and] door-posts were a fifth part [of the wall].

その二つのとびらもオリブの木であって、ソロモンはその上にケルビムと、しゅろの木と、咲いた花の形を刻み、金をもっておおった。すなわちケルビムと、しゅろの木の上に金を着せた。

So [he made] two doors of olive-wood; and he carved upon them carvings of cherubim and palm-trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold; and he spread the gold upon the cherubim, and upon the palm-trees.

こうしてソロモンはまた拝殿の入口のためにオリブの木で四角の形に脇柱を造った。

So also made he for the entrance of the temple door-posts of olive-wood, out of a fourth part [of the wall];

その二つのとびらはいとすぎであって、一つのとびらは二つにたたむ折り戸であり、他のとびらも二つにたたむ折り戸であった。

and two doors of fir-wood: the two leaves of the one door were folding, and the two leaves of the other door were folding.

ソロモンはその上にケルビムと、しゅろの木と、咲いた花を刻み、金をもって彫り物の上を形どおりにおおった。

And he carved [thereon] cherubim and palm-trees and open flowers; and he overlaid them with gold fitted upon the graven work.

また切り石三かさねと、香柏の角材ひとかさねとをもって内庭を造った。

And he built the inner court with three courses of hewn stone, and a course of cedar beams.

第四年のジフの月に主の宮の基をすえ、

In the fourth year was the foundation of the house of Jehovah laid, in the month Ziv.

第十一年のブルの月すなわち八月に、宮のすべての部分が設計どおりに完成した。ソロモンはこれを建てるのに七年を要した。

And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it.

第7章

またソロモンは自分の家を建てたが、十三年かかってその家を全部建て終った。

And Solomon was building his own house thirteen years, and he finished all his house.

彼はレバノンの森の家を建てた。長さ百キュビト、幅五十キュビト、高さ三十キュビトで、三列の香柏の柱があり、その柱の上に香柏の梁があった。

For he built the house of the forest of Lebanon; the length thereof was a hundred cubits, and the breadth thereof fifty cubits, and the height thereof thirty cubits, upon four rows of cedar pillars, with cedar beams upon the pillars.

四十五本の柱の上にある室は香柏の板でおおった。柱は各列十五本あった。

And it was covered with cedar above over the forty and five beams, that were upon the pillars; fifteen in a row.

また窓わくが三列あって、窓と窓と三段に向かい合っていた。

And there were beams in three rows, and window was over against window in three ranks.

戸口と窓はみな四角の枠をもち、窓と窓と三段に向かい合った。

And all the doors and posts were made square with beams: and window was over against window in three ranks.

また柱の広間を造った。長さ五十キュビト、幅三十キュビトであった。柱の前に一つの広間があり、その玄関に柱とひさしがあった。

And he made the porch of pillars; the length thereof was fifty cubits, and the breadth thereof thirty cubits; and a porch before them; and pillars and a threshold before them.

またソロモンはみずから審判をするために玉座の広間、すなわち審判の広間を造った。床からたるきまで香柏をもっておおった。

And he made the porch of the throne where he was to judge, even the porch of judgment: and it was covered with cedar from floor to floor.

ソロモンが住んだ宮殿はその広間のうしろの他の庭にあって、その造作は同じであった。ソロモンはまた彼がめとったパロの娘のために家を建てたが、その広間と同じであった。

And his house where he was to dwell, the other court within the porch, was of the like work. He made also a house for Pharaoh`s daughter (whom Solomon had taken to wife), like unto this porch.

これらはみな内外とも、土台から軒まで、また主の宮の庭から大庭まで、寸法に合わせて切った石、すなわち、のこぎりでひいた高価な石で造られた。

All these were of costly stones, even of hewn stone, according to measure, sawed with saws, within and without, even from the foundation unto the coping, and so on the outside unto the great court.

また土台は高価な石、大きな石、すなわち八キュビトの石、十キュビトの石であった。

And the foundation was of costly stones, even great stones, stones of ten cubits, and stones of eight cubits.

その上には寸法に合わせて切った高価な石と香柏とがあった。

And above were costly stones, even hewn stone, according to measure, and cedar-wood.

また大庭の周囲には三かさねの切り石と、一かさねの香柏の角材があった。主の宮の内庭と宮殿の広間の庭の場合と同じである。

And the great court round about had three courses of hewn stone, and a course of cedar beams; like as the inner court of the house of Jehovah, and the porch of the house.

ソロモン王は人をつかわしてツロからヒラムを呼んできた。

And king Solomon sent and fetched Hiram out of Tyre.

彼はナフタリの部族の寡婦の子であって、その父はツロの人で、青銅の細工人であった。ヒラムは青銅のいろいろな細工をする知恵と悟りと知識に満ちた者であったが、ソロモン王のところにきて、そのすべての細工をした。

He was the son of a widow of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in brass; and he was filled with wisdom and understanding and skill, to work all works in brass. And he came to king Solomon, and wrought all his work.

彼は青銅の柱二本を鋳た。一本の柱の高さは十八キュビト、そのまわりは綱をもって測ると十二キュビトあり、指四本の厚さで空洞であった。他の柱も同じである。

For he fashioned the two pillars of brass, eighteen cubits high apiece: and a line of twelve cubits compassed either of them about.

また青銅を溶かして柱頭二つを造り、柱の頂にすえた。その一つの柱頭の高さは五キュビト、他の柱頭の高さも五キュビトであった。

And he made two capitals of molten brass, to set upon the tops of the pillars: the height of the one capital was five cubits, and the height of the other capital was five cubits.

柱の頂にある柱頭のために鎖に編んだ飾りひもで市松模様の網細工二つを造った。すなわちこの柱頭のために一つ、かの柱頭のために一つを造った。

There were nets of checker-work, and wreaths of chain-work, for the capitals which were upon the top of the pillars; seven for the one capital, and seven for the other capital.

またざくろを造った。すなわち二並びのざくろを一つの網細工の上のまわりに造って、柱の頂にある柱頭を巻いた。他の柱頭にも同じようにした。

So he made the pillars; and there were two rows round about upon the one network, to cover the capitals that were upon the top of the pillars: and so did he for the other capital.

この廊の柱の頂にある柱頭の上に四キュビトのゆりの花の細工があった。

And the capitals that were upon the top of the pillars in the porch were of lily-work, four cubits.

二つの柱の上端の丸い突出部の上にある網細工の柱頭の周囲には、おのおの二百のざくろが二並びになっていた。

And there were capitals above also upon the two pillars, close by the belly which was beside the network: and the pomegranates were two hundred, in rows round about upon the other capital.

この柱を神殿の廊に立てた。すなわち南に柱を立てて、その名をヤキンと名づけ、北に柱を立てて、その名をボアズと名づけた。

And he set up the pillars at the porch of the temple: and he set up the right pillar, and called the name thereof Jachin; and he set up the left pillar, and called the name thereof Boaz.

その柱の頂にはゆりの花の細工があった。こうしてその柱の造作ができあがった。

And upon the top of the pillars was lily-work: so was the work of the pillars finished.

また海を鋳て造った。縁から縁まで十キュビトであって、周囲は円形をなし、高さ五キュビトで、その周囲は綱をもって測ると三十キュビトであった。

And he made the molten sea of ten cubits from brim to brim, round in compass, and the height thereof was five cubits; and a line of thirty cubits compassed it round about.

その縁の下には三十キュビトの周囲をめぐるひさごがあって、海の周囲を囲んでいた。そのひさごは二並びで、海を鋳る時に鋳たものである。

And under the brim of it round about there were knops which did compass it, for ten cubits, compassing the sea round about: the knops were in two rows, cast when it was cast.

その海は十二の牛の上に置かれ、その三つは北に向かい、三つは西に向かい、三つは南に向かい、三つは東に向かっていた。海はその上に置かれ、牛のうしろは皆内に向かっていた。

It stood upon twelve oxen, three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east; and the sea was set upon them above, and all their hinder parts were inward.

海の厚さは手の幅で、その縁は杯の縁のように、ゆりの花に似せて造られた。海には水が二千バテはいった。

And it was a handbreadth thick: and the brim thereof was wrought like the brim of a cup, like the flower of a lily: it held two thousand baths.

また青銅の台を十個造った。台は長さ四キュビト、幅四キュビト、高さ三キュビトであった。

And he made the ten bases of brass; four cubits was the length of one base, and four cubits the breadth thereof, and three cubits the height of it.

その台の構造は次のとおりである。台には鏡板があり、鏡板は枠の中にあった。

And the work of the bases was on this manner: they had panels; and there were panels between the ledges;

枠の中にある鏡板には、ししと牛とケルビムとがあり、また、ししと牛の上と下にある枠の斜面には花飾りが細工してあった。

and on the panels that were between the ledges were lions, oxen, and cherubim; and upon the ledges there was a pedestal above; and beneath the lions and oxen were wreaths of hanging work.

また台にはおのおの四つの青銅の車輪と、青銅の車軸があり、その四すみには洗盤のささえがあった。そのささえは、おのおの花飾りのかたわらに鋳て造りつけてあった。

And every base had four brazen wheels, and axles of brass; and the four feet thereof had undersetters: beneath the laver were the undersetters molten, with wreaths at the side of each.

その口は一キュビト上に突き出て、台の頂の内にあり、その口は丸く、台座のように造られ、深さ一キュビト半であった。またその口には彫り物があった。その鏡板は四角で、丸くなかった。

And the mouth of it within the capital and above was a cubit: and the mouth thereof was round after the work of a pedestal, a cubit and a half; and also upon the mouth of it were gravings, and their panels were foursquare, not round.

四つの車輪は鏡板の下にあり、車軸は台に取り付けてあり、車輪の高さはおのおの一キュビト半であった。

And the four wheels were underneath the panels; and the axletrees of the wheels were in the base: and the height of a wheel was a cubit and half a cubit.

車輪の構造は戦車の車輪の構造と同じで、その車軸と縁と輻と轂とはみな鋳物であった。

And the work of the wheels was like the work of a chariot wheel: their axletrees, and their felloes, and their spokes, and their naves, were all molten.

おのおのの台の四すみに四つのささえがあり、そのささえは台の一部をなしていた。

And there were four undersetters at the four corners of each base: the undersetters thereof were of the base itself.

台の上には高さ半キュビトの丸い帯輪があった。そして台の上にあるその支柱と鏡板とはその一部をなしていた。

And in the top of the base was there a round compass half a cubit high; and on the top of the base the stays thereof and the panels thereof were of the same.

その支柱の表面と鏡板にはそれぞれの場所に、ケルビムと、ししと、しゅろを刻み、またその周囲に花飾りを施した。

And on the plates of the stays thereof, and on the panels thereof, he graved cherubim, lions, and palm-trees, according to the space of each, with wreaths round about.

このようにして十個の台を造った。それはみな同じ鋳方、同じ寸法、同じ形であった。

After this manner he made the ten bases: all of them had one casting, one measure, and one form.

また青銅の洗盤を十個造った。洗盤はおのおの四十バテの水がはいり、洗盤はおのおの四キュビトであった。十個の台の上にはおのおの一つずつの洗盤があった。

And he made ten lavers of brass: one laver contained forty baths; and every laver was four cubits; and upon very one of the ten bases one laver.

その台の五個を宮の南の方に、五個を宮の北の方に置き、宮の東南の方に海をすえた。

And he set the bases, five on the right side of the house, and five on the left side of the house: and he set the sea on the right side of the house eastward, toward the south.

ヒラムはまたつぼと十能と鉢を造った。こうしてヒラムはソロモン王のために主の宮のすべての細工をなし終えた。

And Hiram made the lavers, and the shovels, and the basins. So Hiram made an end of doing all the work that he wrought for king Solomon in the house of Jehovah:

すなわち二本の柱と、その柱の頂にある柱頭の二つの玉と、柱の頂にある柱頭の二つの玉をおおう二つの網細工と、

the two pillars, and the two bowls of the capitals that were on the top of the pillars; and the two networks to cover the two bowls of the capitals that were on the top of the pillars;

その二つの網細工のためのざくろ四百。このざくろは一つの網細工に、二並びにつけて、柱の頂にある柱頭の二つの玉を巻いた。

and the four hundred pomegranates for the two networks; two rows of pomegranates for each network, to cover the two bowls of the capitals that were upon the pillars;

また十個の台と、その台の上の十個の洗盤と、

and the ten bases, and the ten lavers on the bases;

一つの海と、その海の下の十二の牛とであった。

and the one sea, and the twelve oxen under the sea;

さてつぼと十能と鉢、すなわちヒラムがソロモン王のために造った主の宮のこれらの器はみな光のある青銅であった。

and the pots, and the shovels, and the basins: even all these vessels, which Hiram made for king Solomon, in the house of Jehovah, were of burnished brass.

王はヨルダンの低地で、スコテとザレタンの間の粘土の地でこれらを鋳た。

In the plain of the Jordan did the king cast them, in the clay ground between Succoth and Zarethan.

ソロモンはその器が非常に多かったので、皆それをはからずにおいた。その青銅の重さは、はかり得なかった。

And Solomon left all the vessels [unweighed], because they were exceeding many: the weight of the brass could not be found out.

またソロモンは主の宮にあるもろもろの器を造った。すなわち金の祭壇と、供えのパンを載せる金の机、

And Solomon made all the vessels that were in the house of Jehovah: the golden altar, and the table whereupon the showbread was, of gold;

および純金の燭台。この燭台は本殿の前に、五つは南に、五つは北にあった。また金の花と、ともしび皿と、心かきと、

and the candlesticks, five on the right side, and five on the left, before the oracle, of pure gold; and the flowers, and the lamps, and the tongs, of gold;

純金の皿と、心切りばさみと、鉢と、香の杯と、心取り皿と、至聖所である宮の奥のとびらのためおよび、宮の拝殿のとびらのために、金のひじつぼを造った。

and the cups, and the snuffers, and the basins, and the spoons, and the firepans, of pure gold; and the hinges, both for the doors of the inner house, the most holy place, and for the doors of the house, [to wit], of the temple, of gold.

こうしてソロモン王が主の宮のために造るすべての細工は終った。そしてソロモンは父ダビデがささげた物、すなわち金銀および器物を携え入り、主の宮の宝蔵の中にたくわえた。

Thus all the work that king Solomon wrought in the house of Jehovah was finished. And Solomon brought in the things which David his father had dedicated, [even] the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, and put them in the treasuries of the house of Jehovah.

第8章

ソロモンは主の契約の箱をダビデの町、すなわちシオンからかつぎ上ろうとして、イスラエルの長老たちと、すべての部族のかしらたちと、イスラエルの人々の氏族の長たちをエルサレムでソロモン王のもとに召し集めた。

Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the princes of the fathers` [houses] of the children of Israel, unto king Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of Jehovah out of the city of David, which is Zion.

イスラエルの人は皆エタニムの月すなわち七月の祭にソロモン王のもとに集まった。

And all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto king Solomon at the feast, in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month.

イスラエルの長老たちが皆来たので、祭司たちは箱を取りあげた。

And all the elders of Israel came, and the priests took up the ark.

そして彼らは主の箱と、会見の幕屋と、幕屋にあるすべての聖なる器をかつぎ上った。すなわち祭司とレビびとがこれらの物をかつぎ上った。

And they brought up the ark of Jehovah, and the tent of meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the Tent; even these did the priests and the Levites bring up.

ソロモン王および彼のもとに集まったイスラエルの会衆は皆彼と共に箱の前で、羊と牛をささげたが、その数が多くて調べることも数えることもできなかった。

And king Solomon and all the congregation of Israel, that were assembled unto him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and oxen, that could not be counted nor numbered for multitude.

祭司たちは主の契約の箱をその場所にかつぎ入れた。すなわち宮の本殿である至聖所のうちのケルビムの翼の下に置いた。

And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto its place, into the oracle of the house, to the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubim.

ケルビムは翼を箱の所に伸べていたので、ケルビムは上から箱とそのさおをおおった。

For the cherubim spread forth their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubim covered the ark and the staves thereof above.

さおは長かったので、さおの端が本殿の前の聖所から見えた。しかし外には見えなかった。そのさおは今日までそこにある。

And the staves were so long that the ends of the staves were seen from the holy place before the oracle; but they were not seen without: and there they are unto this day.

箱の内には二つの石の板のほか何もなかった。これはイスラエルの人々がエジプトの地から出たとき、主が彼らと契約を結ばれたときに、モーセがホレブで、それに納めたものである。

There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, when Jehovah made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.

そして祭司たちが聖所から出たとき、雲が主の宮に満ちたので、

And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of Jehovah,

祭司たちは雲のために立って仕えることができなかった。主の栄光が主の宮に満ちたからである。

so that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud; for the glory of Jehovah filled the house of Jehovah.

そこでソロモンは言った、「主は日を天に置かれた。しかも主は自ら濃き雲の中に住まおうと言われた。

Then spake Solomon, Jehovah hath said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.

わたしはあなたのために高き家、とこしえのみすまいを建てた」。

I have surely built thee a house of habitation, a place for thee to dwell in for ever.

王は身をめぐらして、イスラエルのすべての会衆を祝福した。その時イスラエルのすべての会衆は立っていた。

And the king turned his face about, and blessed all the assembly of Israel: and all the assembly of Israel stood.

彼は言った、「イスラエルの神、主はほむべきかな。主はその口をもってわたしの父ダビデに約束されたことを、その手をもってなし遂げられた。主は言われた、

And he said, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, who spake with his mouth unto David thy father, and hath with his hand fulfilled it, saying,

『わが民イスラエルをエジプトから導き出した日から、わたしはわたしの名を置くべき宮を建てるために、イスラエルのもろもろの部族のうちから、どの町をも選んだことがなかった。ただダビデを選んで、わが民イスラエルの上に立たせた』と。

Since the day that I brought forth my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build a house, that my name might be there; but I chose David to be over my people Israel.

イスラエルの神、主の名のために宮を建てることは、わたしの父ダビデの心にあった。

Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

しかし主はわたしの父ダビデに言われた、『わたしの名のために宮を建てることはあなたの心にあった。あなたの心にこの事のあったのは結構である。

But Jehovah said unto David my father, Whereas it was in thy heart to build a house for my name, thou didst well that it was in thy heart:

けれどもあなたはその宮を建ててはならない。あなたの身から出るあなたの子がわたしの名のために宮を建てるであろう』と。

nevertheless thou shalt not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house for my name.

そして主はその言われた言葉を行われた。すなわちわたしは父ダビデに代って立ち、主が言われたように、イスラエルの位に座し、イスラエルの神、主の名のために宮を建てた。

And Jehovah hath established his word that he spake; for I am risen up in the room of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as Jehovah promised, and have built the house for the name of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

わたしはまたそこに主の契約を納めた箱のために一つの場所を設けた。その契約は主がわれわれの先祖をエジプトの地から導き出された時に、彼らと結ばれたものである」。

And there have I set a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of Jehovah, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

ソロモンはイスラエルの全会衆の前で、主の祭壇の前に立ち、手を天に伸べて、

And Solomon stood before the altar of Jehovah in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven;

言った、「イスラエルの神、主よ、上の天にも、下の地にも、あなたのような神はありません。あなたは契約を守られ、心をつくしてあなたの前に歩むあなたのしもべらに、いつくしみを施し、

and he said, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath; who keepest covenant and lovingkindness with thy servants, that walk before thee with all their heart;

あなたのしもべであるわたしの父ダビデに約束されたことを守られました。あなたが口をもって約束されたことを、手をもってなし遂げられたことは、今日見るとおりであります。

who hast kept with thy servant David my father that which thou didst promise him: yea, thou spakest with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thy hand, as it is this day.

それゆえ、イスラエルの神、主よ、あなたのしもべであるわたしの父ダビデに、あなたが約束して『おまえがわたしの前に歩んだように、おまえの子孫が、その道を慎んで、わたしの前に歩むならば、おまえにはイスラエルの位に座する人が、わたしの前に欠けることはないであろう』と言われたことを、ダビデのために守ってください。

Now therefore, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel, if only thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me as thou hast walked before me.

イスラエルの神よ、どうぞ、あなたのしもべであるわたしの父ダビデに言われた言葉を確認してください。

Now therefore, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father.

しかし神は、はたして地上に住まわれるでしょうか。見よ、天も、いと高き天もあなたをいれることはできません。ましてわたしの建てたこの宮はなおさらです。

But will God in very deed dwell on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded!

しかしわが神、主よ、しもべの祈と願いを顧みて、しもべがきょう、あなたの前にささげる叫びと祈をお聞きください。

Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O Jehovah my God, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer which thy servant prayeth before thee this day;

あなたが『わたしの名をそこに置く』と言われた所、すなわち、この宮に向かって夜昼あなたの目をお開きください。しもべがこの所に向かって祈る祈をお聞きください。

that thine eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place whereof thou hast said, My name shall be there; to hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall pray toward this place.

しもべと、あなたの民イスラエルがこの所に向かって祈る時に、その願いをお聞きください。あなたのすみかである天で聞き、聞いておゆるしください。

And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: yea, hear thou in heaven thy dwelling-place; and when thou hearest, forgive.

もし人がその隣り人に対して罪を犯し、誓いをすることを求められる時、来てこの宮であなたの祭壇の前に誓うならば、

If a man sin against his neighbor, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to swear, and he come [and] swear before thine altar in this house;

あなたは天で聞いて行い、あなたのしもべらをさばき、悪人を罰して、そのおこないの報いをそのこうべに帰し、義人を義として、その義にしたがって、その人に報いてください。

then hear thou in heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his own head, and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.

もしあなたの民イスラエルが、あなたに対して罪を犯したために敵の前に敗れた時、あなたに立ち返って、あなたの名をあがめ、この宮であなたに祈り願うならば、

When thy people Israel are smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee; if they turn again to thee, and confess thy name, and pray and make supplication unto thee in this house:

あなたは天にあって聞き、あなたの民イスラエルの罪をゆるして、あなたが彼らの先祖に賜わった地に彼らを帰らせてください。

then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers.

もし彼らがあなたに罪を犯したために、天が閉ざされて雨がなく、あなたが彼らを苦しめられる時、彼らがこの所に向かって祈り、あなたの名をあがめ、その罪を離れるならば、

When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou dost afflict them:

あなたは天で聞き、あなたのしもべ、あなたの民イスラエルの罪をゆるし、彼らに歩むべき良い道を教えて、あなたが、あなたの民に嗣業として与えられた地に雨を降らせてください。

then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, when thou teachest them the good way wherein they should walk; and send rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.

もし国にききんがあるか、もしくは疫病、立ち枯れ、腐り穂、いなご、青虫があるか、もしくは敵のために町の中に攻め囲まれることがあるか、どんな災害、どんな病気があっても、

If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, if there be blasting [or] mildew, locust [or] caterpillar; if their enemy besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague, whatsoever sickness there be;

もし、だれでも、あなたの民イスラエルがみな、おのおのその心の悩みを知って、この宮に向かい、手を伸べるならば、どんな祈、どんな願いでも、

what prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, [or] by all thy people Israel, who shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:

あなたは、あなたのすみかである天で聞いてゆるし、かつ行い、おのおのの人に、その心を知っておられるゆえ、そのすべての道にしたがって報いてください。ただ、あなただけ、すべての人の心を知っておられるからです。

then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling-place, and forgive, and do, and render unto every man according to all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)

あなたが、われわれの先祖に賜わった地に、彼らの生きながらえる日の間、常にあなたを恐れさせてください。

that they may fear thee all the days that they live in the land which thou gavest unto our fathers.

またあなたの民イスラエルの者でなく、あなたの名のために遠い国から来る異邦人が、

Moreover concerning the foreigner, that is not of thy people Israel, when he shall come out of a far country for thy name`s sake

――それは彼らがあなたの大いなる名と、強い手と、伸べた腕とについて聞き及ぶからです、――もしきて、この宮に向かって祈るならば、

(for they shall hear of thy great name, and of thy mighty hand, and of thine outstretched arm); when he shall come and pray toward this house;

あなたは、あなたのすみかである天で聞き、すべて異邦人があなたに呼び求めることをかなえさせてください。そうすれば、地のすべての民は、あなたの民イスラエルのように、あなたの名を知り、あなたを恐れ、またわたしが建てたこの宮があなたの名によって呼ばれることを知るにいたるでしょう。

hear thou in heaven thy dwelling-place, and do according to all that the foreigner calleth to thee for; that all the peoples of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee, as doth thy people Israel, and that they may know that this house which I have built is called by my name.

あなたの民が敵と戦うために、あなたがつかわされる道を通って出て行くとき、もし彼らがあなたの選ばれた町、わたしがあなたの名のために建てた宮の方に向かって、主に祈るならば、

If thy people go out to battle against their enemy, by whatsoever way thou shalt send them, and they pray unto Jehovah toward the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house which I have built for thy name;

あなたは天で、彼らの祈と願いを聞いて彼らをお助けください。

then hear thou in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.

彼らがあなたに対して罪を犯すことがあって、――人は罪を犯さない者はないのです、――あなたが彼らを怒り、彼らを敵にわたし、敵が彼らを捕虜として遠近にかかわらず、敵の地に引いて行く時、

If they sin against thee (for there is no man that sinneth not), and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive unto the land of the enemy, far off or near;

もし彼らが捕われていった地で、みずから省みて悔い、自分を捕えていった者の地で、あなたに願い、『われわれは罪を犯しました、そむいて悪を行いました』と言い、

yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they are carried captive, and turn again, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captive, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have dealt wickedly;

自分を捕えていった敵の地で、心をつくし、精神をつくしてあなたに立ち返り、あなたが彼らの先祖に与えられた地、あなたが選ばれた町、わたしがあなたの名のために建てた宮の方に向かって、あなたに祈るならば、

if they return unto thee with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies, who carried them captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name:

あなたのすみかである天で、彼らの祈と願いを聞いて、彼らを助け、

then hear thou their prayer and their supplication in heaven thy dwelling-place, and maintain their cause;

あなたの民が、あなたに対して犯した罪と、あなたに対して行ったすべてのあやまちをゆるし、彼らを捕えていった者の前で、彼らにあわれみを得させ、その人々が彼らをあわれむようにしてください。

and forgive thy people who have sinned against thee, and all their transgressions wherein they have transgressed against thee; and give them compassion before those who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them

（彼らはあなたがエジプトから、鉄のかまどの中から導き出されたあなたの民、あなたの嗣業であるからです）。

(for they are thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest forth out of Egypt, from the midst of the furnace of iron);

どうぞ、しもべの願いと、あなたの民イスラエルの願いに、あなたの目を開き、すべてあなたに呼び求める時、彼らの願いをお聞きください。

that thine eyes may be open unto the supplication of thy servant, and unto the supplication of thy people Israel, to hearken unto them whensoever they cry unto thee.

あなたは彼らを地のすべての民のうちから区別して、あなたの嗣業とされたからです。主なる神よ、あなたがわれわれの先祖をエジプトから導き出された時、モーセによって言われたとおりです」。

For thou didst separate them from among all the peoples of the earth, to be thine inheritance, as thou spakest by Moses thy servant, when thou broughtest our fathers out of Egypt, O Lord Jehovah.

ソロモンはこの祈と願いをことごとく主にささげ終ると、それまで天に向かって手を伸べ、ひざまずいていた主の祭壇の前から立ちあがり、

And it was so, that, when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication unto Jehovah, he arose from before the altar of Jehovah, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread forth toward heaven.

立って大声でイスラエルの全会衆を祝福して言った、

And he stood, and blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying,

「主はほむべきかな。主はすべて約束されたように、その民イスラエルに太平を賜わった。そのしもべモーセによって仰せられたその良き約束は皆一つもたがわなかった。

Blessed be Jehovah, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses his servant.

われわれの神がわれわれの先祖と共におられたように、われわれと共におられるように。われわれを離れず、またわれわれを見捨てられないように。

Jehovah our God be with us, as he was with our fathers: let him not leave us, nor forsake us;

われわれの心を主に傾けて、主のすべての道に歩ませ、われわれの先祖に命じられた戒めと定めと、おきてとを守らせられるように。

that he may incline our hearts unto him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his ordinances, which he commanded our fathers.

主の前にわたしが述べたこれらの願いの言葉が、日夜われわれの神、主に覚えられるように。そして主は日々の事に、しもべを助け、主の民イスラエルを助けられるように。

And let these my words, wherewith I have made supplication before Jehovah, be nigh unto Jehovah our God day and night, that he maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel, as every day shall require;

そうすれば、地のすべての民は主が神であることと、他に神のないことを知るに至るであろう。

that all the peoples of the earth may know that Jehovah, he is God; there is none else.

それゆえ、あなたがたは、今日のようにわれわれの神、主に対して、心は全く真実であり、主の定めに歩み、主の戒めを守らなければならない」。

Let your heart therefore be perfect with Jehovah our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.

そして王および王と共にいるすべてのイスラエルびとは主の前に犠牲をささげた。

And the king, and all Israel with him, offered sacrifice before Jehovah.

ソロモンは酬恩祭として牛二万二千頭、羊十二万頭を主にささげた。こうして王とイスラエルの人々は皆主の宮を奉献した。

And Solomon offered for the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which he offered unto Jehovah, two and twenty thousand oxen, and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of Jehovah.

その日、王は主の宮の前にある庭の中を聖別し、その所で燔祭と素祭と酬恩祭の脂肪をささげた。これは主の前にある青銅の祭壇が素祭と酬恩祭の脂肪とを受けるに足りなかったからである。

The same day did the king hallow the middle of the court that was before the house of Jehovah; for there he offered the burnt-offering, and the meal-offering, and the fat of the peace-offerings, because the brazen altar that was before Jehovah was too little to receive the burnt-offering, and the meal-offering, and the fat of the peace-offerings.

その時ソロモンは七日の間われわれの神、主の前に祭を行った。ハマテの入口からエジプトの川に至るまでのすべてのイスラエルびとの大いなる会衆が彼と共にいた。

So Solomon held the feast at that time, and all Israel with him, a great assembly, from the entrance of Hamath unto the brook of Egypt, before Jehovah our God, seven days and seven days, even fourteen days.

八日目にソロモンは民を帰らせた。民は王を祝福し、主がそのしもべダビデと、その民イスラエルとに施されたもろもろの恵みを喜び、心に楽しんでその天幕に帰って行った。

On the eighth day he sent the people away; and they blessed the king, and went unto their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that Jehovah had showed unto David his servant, and to Israel his people.

第9章

ソロモンが主の宮と王の宮殿およびソロモンが建てようと望んだすべてのものを建て終った時、

And it came to pass, when Solomon had finished the building of the house of Jehovah, and the king`s house, and all Solomon`s desire which he was pleased to do,

主はかつてギベオンでソロモンに現れられたように再び現れて、

that Jehovah appeared to Solomon the second time, as he had appeared unto him at Gibeon.

彼に言われた、「あなたが、わたしの前に願った祈と願いとを聞いた。わたしはあなたが建てたこの宮を聖別して、わたしの名を永久にそこに置く。わたしの目と、わたしの心は常にそこにあるであろう。

And Jehovah said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually.

あなたがもし、あなたの父ダビデが歩んだように全き心をもって正しくわたしの前に歩み、すべてわたしが命じたようにおこなって、わたしの定めと、おきてとを守るならば、

And as for thee, if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and mine ordinances;

わたしは、あなたの父ダビデに約束して『イスラエルの王位にのぼる人があなたに欠けることはないであろう』と言ったように、あなたのイスラエルに王たる位をながく確保するであろう。

then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom over Israel for ever, according as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.

しかし、あなたがた、またはあなたがたの子孫がそむいてわたしに従わず、わたしがあなたがたの前に置いた戒めと定めとを守らず、他の神々に行って、それに仕え、それを拝むならば、

But if ye shall turn away from following me, ye or your children, and not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;

わたしはイスラエルを、わたしが与えた地のおもてから断つであろう。またわたしの名のために聖別した宮をわたしの前から投げすてるであろう。そしてイスラエルはもろもろの民のうちにことわざとなり、笑い草となるであろう。

then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all peoples.

かつ、この宮は荒塚となり、そのかたわらを過ぎる者は皆驚き、うそぶいて『なにゆえ、主はこの地と、この宮とにこのようにされたのか』と言うであろう。

And though this house is so high, yet shall every one that passeth by it be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath Jehovah done thus unto this land, and to this house?

その時人々は答えて『彼らは自分の先祖をエジプトの地から導き出した彼らの神、主を捨てて、他の神々につき従い、それを拝み、それに仕えたために、主はこのすべての災を彼らの上に下したのである』と言うであろう」。

and they shall answer, Because they forsook Jehovah their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath Jehovah brought all this evil upon them.

ソロモンは二十年を経て二つの家すなわち主の宮と王の宮殿とを建て終った時、

And it came to pass at the end of twenty years, wherein Solomon had built the two houses, the house of Jehovah and the king`s house

ツロの王ヒラムがソロモンの望みに任せて香柏と、いとすぎと、金とを供給したので、ソロモン王はガリラヤの地の町二十をヒラムに与えた。

(now Hiram the king of Tyre had furnished Solomon with cedar-trees and fir-trees, and with gold, according to all his desire), that then king Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.

しかしヒラムがツロから来て、ソロモンが彼に与えた町々を見たとき、それらは彼の気にいらなかったので、

And Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him; and they pleased him not.

彼は、「兄弟よ、あなたがくださったこれらの町々は、いったいなんですか」と言った。それで、そこは今日までカブルの地と呼ばれている。

And he said, What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother? And he called them the land of Cabul unto this day.

ヒラムはかつて金百二十タラントを王に贈った。

And Hiram sent to the king sixscore talents of gold.

ソロモン王が強制的に労働者を徴募したのはこうである。すなわち主の宮と自分の宮殿と、ミロとエルサレムの城壁と、ハゾルとメギドとゲゼルを建てるためであった。

And this is the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised, to build the house of Jehovah, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.

（エジプトの王パロはかつて上ってきて、ゲゼルを取り、火でこれを焼き、その町に住んでいたカナンびとを殺し、これをソロモンの妻である自分の娘に与えて婚姻の贈り物としたので、

Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain the Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given it for a portion unto his daughter, Solomon`s wife.

ソロモンはそのゲゼルを建て直した）。また下ベテホロンと、

And Solomon built Gezer, and Beth-horon the nether,

バアラテとユダの国の荒野にあるタマル、

and Baalath, and Tamar in the wilderness, in the land,

およびソロモンが持っていた倉庫の町々、戦車の町々、騎兵の町々ならびにソロモンがエルサレム、レバノンおよびそのすべての領地において建てようと望んだものをことごとく建てるためであった。

and all the store-cities that Solomon had, and the cities for his chariots, and the cities for his horsemen, and that which Solomon desired to build for his pleasure in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.

すべてイスラエルの子孫でないアモリびと、ヘテびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとの残った者、

As for all the people that were left of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of the children of Israel;

その地にあって彼らのあとに残った子孫すなわちイスラエルの人々の滅ぼしつくすことのできなかった者を、ソロモンは強制的に奴隷として徴募をおこない、今日に至っている。

their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel were not able utterly to destroy, of them did Solomon raise a levy of bondservants unto this day.

しかしイスラエルの人々をソロモンはひとりも奴隷としなかった。彼らは軍人、また彼の役人、司令官、指揮官、戦車隊長、騎兵隊長であったからである。

But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no bondservants; but they were the men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and rulers of his chariots and of his horsemen.

ソロモンの工事を監督する上役の官吏は五百五十人であって、工事に働く民を治めた。

These were the chief officers that were over Solomon`s work, five hundred and fifty, who bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.

パロの娘はダビデの町から上って、ソロモンが彼女のために建てた家に住んだ。その時ソロモンはミロを建てた。

But Pharaoh`s daughter came up out of the city of David unto her house which [Solomon] had built for her: then did he build Millo.

ソロモンは主のために築いた祭壇の上に年に三度燔祭と酬恩祭をささげ、また主の前に香をたいた。こうしてソロモンは宮を完成した。

And three times a year did Solomon offer burnt-offerings and peace-offerings upon the altar which he built unto Jehovah, burning incense therewith, [upon the altar] that was before Jehovah. So he finished the house.

ソロモン王はエドムの地、紅海の岸のエラテに近いエジオン・ゲベルで数隻の船を造った。

And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Ezion-geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red Sea, in the land of Edom.

ヒラムは海の事を知っている船員であるそのしもべをソロモンのしもべと共にその船でつかわした。

And Hiram sent in the navy his servants, shipmen that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon.

彼らはオフルへ行って、そこから金四百二十タラントを取って、ソロモン王の所にもってきた。

And they came to Ophir, and fetched from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought it to king Solomon.

第10章

シバの女王は主の名にかかわるソロモンの名声を聞いたので、難問をもってソロモンを試みようとたずねてきた。

And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of Jehovah, she came to prove him with hard questions.

彼女は多くの従者を連れ、香料と、たくさんの金と宝石とをらくだに負わせてエルサレムにきた。彼女はソロモンのもとにきて、その心にあることをことごとく彼に告げたが、

And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones; and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.

ソロモンはそのすべての問に答えた。王が知らないで彼女に説明のできないことは一つもなかった。

And Solomon told her all her questions: there was not anything hid from the king which he told her not.

シバの女王はソロモンのもろもろの知恵と、ソロモンが建てた宮殿、

And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built,

その食卓の食物と、列座の家来たちと、その侍臣たちの伺候ぶり、彼らの服装と、彼の給仕たち、および彼が主の宮でささげる燔祭を見て、全く気を奪われてしまった。

and the food of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel, and his cupbearers, and his ascent by which he went up unto the house of Jehovah; there was no more spirit in her.

彼女は王に言った、「わたしが国であなたの事と、あなたの知恵について聞いたことは真実でありました。

And she said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in mine own land of thine acts, and of thy wisdom.

しかしわたしがきて、目に見るまでは、その言葉を信じませんでしたが、今見るとその半分もわたしは知らされていなかったのです。あなたの知恵と繁栄はわたしが聞いたうわさにまさっています。

Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the half was not told me; thy wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame which I heard.

あなたの奥方たちはさいわいです。常にあなたの前に立って、あなたの知恵を聞く家来たちはさいわいです。

Happy are thy men, happy are these thy servants, that stand continually before thee, [and] that hear thy wisdom.

あなたの神、主はほむべきかな。主はあなたを喜び、あなたをイスラエルの位にのぼらせられました。主は永久にイスラエルを愛せられるゆえ、あなたを王として公道と正義とを行わせられるのです」。

Blessed be Jehovah thy God, who delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel: because Jehovah loved Israel for ever, therefore made he thee king, to do justice and righteousness.

そして彼女は金百二十タラントおよび多くの香料と宝石とを王に贈った。シバの女王がソロモン王に贈ったような多くの香料は再びこなかった。

And she gave the king a hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.

オフルから金を載せてきたヒラムの船は、またオフルからたくさんのびゃくだんの木と宝石とを運んできたので、

And the navy also of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir great plenty of almug-trees and precious stones.

王はびゃくだんの木をもって主の宮と王の宮殿のために壁柱を造り、また歌う人々のために琴と立琴とを造った。このようなびゃくだんの木は、かつてきたこともなく、また今日まで見たこともなかった。

And the king made of the almug-trees pillars for the house of Jehovah, and for the king`s house, harps also and psalteries for the singers: there came no such almug-trees, nor were seen, unto this day.

ソロモン王はその豊かなのにしたがってシバの女王に贈り物をしたほかに、彼女の望みにまかせて、すべてその求める物を贈った。そして彼女はその家来たちと共に自分の国へ帰っていった。

And king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, besides that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned, and went to her own land, she and her servants.

さて一年の間にソロモンのところに、はいってきた金の目方は六百六十六タラントであった。

Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold,

そのほかに貿易商および商人の取引、ならびにアラビヤの諸王と国の代官たちからも、はいってきた。

besides [that which] the traders [brought], and the traffic of the merchants, and of all the kings of the mingled people, and of the governors of the country.

ソロモン王は延金の大盾二百を造った。その大盾にはおのおの六百シケルの金を用いた。

And king Solomon made two hundred bucklers of beaten gold; six hundred [shekels] of gold went to one buckler.

また延金の小盾三百を造った。その小盾にはおのおの三ミナの金を用いた。王はこれらをレバノンの森の家に置いた。

And [he made] three hundred shields of beaten gold; three pounds of gold went to one shield: and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon.

王はまた大きな象牙の玉座を造り、純金をもってこれをおおった。

Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with the finest gold.

その玉座に六つの段があり、玉座の後に子牛の頭があり、座席の両側にひじ掛けがあって、ひじ掛けのわきに二つのししが立っていた。

There were six steps to the throne, and the top of the throne was round behind; and there were stays on either side by the place of the seat, and two lions standing beside the stays.

また六つの段のおのおのの両側に十二のししが立っていた。このような物はどこの国でも造られたことがなかった。

And twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other upon the six steps: there was not the like made in any kingdom.

ソロモン王が飲むときに用いた器は皆金であった。またレバノンの森の家の器も皆純金であって、銀のものはなかった。銀はソロモンの世には顧みられなかった。

And all king Solomon`s drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold: none were of silver; it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon.

これは王が海にタルシシの船隊を所有して、ヒラムの船隊と一緒に航海させ、タルシシの船隊に三年に一度、金、銀、象牙、さる、くじゃくを載せてこさせたからである。

For the king had at sea a navy of Tarshish with the navy of Hiram: once every three years came the navy of Tarshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.

このようにソロモン王は富も知恵も、地のすべての王にまさっていたので、

So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom.

全地の人々は神がソロモンの心に授けられた知恵を聞こうとしてソロモンに謁見を求めた。

And all the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.

人々はおのおの贈り物を携えてきた。すなわち銀の器、金の器、衣服、没薬、香料、馬、騾馬など年々定まっていた。

And they brought every man his tribute, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and raiment, and armor, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year.

ソロモンは戦車と騎兵とを集めたが、戦車一千四百両、騎兵一万二千あった。ソロモンはこれを戦車の町とエルサレムの王のもとに置いた。

And Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, that he bestowed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.

王はエルサレムで、銀を石のように用い、香柏を平地にあるいちじく桑のように多く用いた。

And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycomore-trees that are in the lowland, for abundance.

ソロモンが馬を輸入したのはエジプトとクエからであった。すなわち王の貿易商はクエから代価を払って受け取ってきた。

And the horses which Solomon had were brought out of Egypt; and the king`s merchants received them in droves, each drove at a price.

エジプトから輸入される戦車一両は銀六百シケル、馬は百五十シケルであった。このようにして、これらのものが王の貿易商によって、ヘテびとのすべての王たちおよびスリヤの王たちに輸出された。

And a chariot came up and went out of Egypt for six hundred [shekels] of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty; and so for all the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, did they bring them out by their means.

第11章

ソロモン王は多くの外国の女を愛した。すなわちパロの娘、モアブびと、アンモンびと、エドムびと、シドンびと、ヘテびとの女を愛した。

Now king Solomon loved many foreign women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites;

主はかつてこれらの国民について、イスラエルの人々に言われた、「あなたがたは彼らと交わってはならない。彼らもまたあなたがたと交わってはならない。彼らは必ずあなたがたの心を転じて彼らの神々に従わせるからである」。しかしソロモンは彼らを愛して離れなかった。

of the nations concerning which Jehovah said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you; for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.

彼には王妃としての妻七百人、そばめ三百人があった。その妻たちが彼の心を転じたのである。

And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.

ソロモンが年老いた時、その妻たちが彼の心を転じて他の神々に従わせたので、彼の心は父ダビデの心のようには、その神、主に真実でなかった。

For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, as was the heart of David his father.

これはソロモンがシドンびとの女神アシタロテに従い、アンモンびとの神である憎むべき者ミルコムに従ったからである。

For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

このようにソロモンは主の目の前に悪を行い、父ダビデのように全くは主に従わなかった。

And Solomon did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and went not fully after Jehovah, as did David his father.

そしてソロモンはモアブの神である憎むべき者ケモシのために、またアンモンの人々の神である憎むべき者モレクのためにエルサレムの東の山に高き所を築いた。

Then did Solomon build a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, in the mount that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon.

彼はまた外国のすべての妻たちのためにもそうしたので、彼女たちはその神々に香をたき、犠牲をささげた。

And so did he for all his foreign wives, who burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.

このようにソロモンの心が転じて、イスラエルの神、主を離れたため、主は彼を怒られた。すなわち主がかつて二度彼に現れ、

And Jehovah was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned away from Jehovah, the God of Israel, who had appeared unto him twice,

この事について彼に、他の神々に従ってはならないと命じられたのに、彼は主の命じられたことを守らなかったからである。

and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which Jehovah commanded.

それゆえ、主はソロモンに言われた、「これがあなたの本心であり、わたしが命じた契約と定めとを守らなかったので、わたしは必ずあなたから国を裂き離して、それをあなたの家来に与える。

Wherefore Jehovah said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.

しかしあなたの父ダビデのために、あなたの世にはそれをしないが、あなたの子の手からそれを裂き離す。

Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it, for David thy father`s sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son.

ただし、わたしは国をことごとくは裂き離さず、わたしのしもべダビデのために、またわたしが選んだエルサレムのために一つの部族をあなたの子に与えるであろう」。

Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but I will give one tribe to thy son, for David my servant`s sake, and for Jerusalem`s sake which I have chosen.

こうして主はエドムびとハダデを起して、ソロモンの敵とされた。彼はエドムの王家の者であった。

And Jehovah raised up an adversary unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: he was of the king`s seed in Edom.

さきにダビデはエドムにいたが、軍の長ヨアブが上っていって、戦死した者を葬り、エドムの男子をことごとく打ち殺した時、

For it came to pass, when David was in Edom, and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain, and had smitten every male in Edom

（ヨアブはイスラエルの人々と共に六か月そこにとどまって、エドムの男子をことごとく断った）。

(for Joab and all Israel remained there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom);

ハダデはその父のしもべである数人のエドムびとと共に逃げてエジプトへ行こうとした。その時ハダデはまだ少年であった。

that Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father`s servants with him, to go into Egypt, Hadad being yet a little child.

彼らがミデアンを立ってパランへ行き、パランから人々を伴ってエジプトへ行き、エジプトの王パロのところへ行くと、パロは彼に家を与え、食糧を定め、かつ土地を与えた。

And they arose out of Midian, and came to Paran; and they took men with them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt, unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house, and appointed him victuals, and gave him land.

ハダデは大いにパロの心にかなったので、パロは自分の妻の妹すなわち王妃タペネスの妹を妻として彼に与えた。

And Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him to wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.

タペネスの妹は彼に男の子ゲヌバテを産んだので、タペネスはその子をパロの家のうちで乳離れさせた。ゲヌバテはパロの家で、パロの子どもたちと一緒にいた。

And the sister of Tahpenes bare him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh`s house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh`s house among the sons of Pharaoh.

さてハダデはエジプトで、ダビデがその先祖と共に眠ったことと、軍の長ヨアブが死んだことを聞いたので、ハダデはパロに言った、「わたしを去らせて、国へ帰らせてください」。

And when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the host was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, Let me depart, that I may go to mine own country.

パロは彼に言った、「わたしと共にいて、なんの不足があって国へ帰ることを求めるのですか」。彼は言った、「ただ、わたしを帰らせてください」。

Then Pharaoh said unto him, But what hast thou lacked with me, that, behold, thou seekest to go to thine own country? And he answered, Nothing: howbeit only let me depart.

神はまたエリアダの子レゾンを起してソロモンの敵とされた。彼はその主人ゾバの王ハダデゼルのもとを逃げ去った者であった。

And God raised up [another] adversary unto him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah.

ダビデがゾバの人々を殺した後、彼は人々を自分のまわりに集めて略奪隊の首領となった。彼らはダマスコへ行って、そこに住み、ダマスコで彼を王とした。

And he gathered men unto him, and became captain over a troop, when David slew them [of Zobah]: and they went to Damascus, and dwelt therein, and reigned in Damascus.

彼はソロモンの一生の間、イスラエルの敵となって、ハダデがしたように害をなし、イスラエルを憎んでスリヤを治めた。

And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, besides the mischief that Hadad [did]: and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.

ゼレダのエフライムびとネバテの子ヤラベアムはソロモンの家来であったが、その母の名はゼルヤといって寡婦であった。彼もまたその手をあげて王に敵した。

And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mother`s name was Zeruah, a widow, he also lifted up his hand against the king.

彼が手をあげて、王に敵した事情はこうである。ソロモンはミロを築き、父ダビデの町の破れ口をふさいでいた。

And this was the reason why he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breach of the city of David his father.

ヤラベアムは非常に手腕のある人であったが、ソロモンはこの若者がよく働くのを見て、彼にヨセフの家のすべての強制労働の監督をさせた。

And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor; and Solomon saw the young man that he was industrious, and he gave him charge over all the labor of the house of Joseph.

そのころ、ヤラベアムがエルサレムを出たとき、シロびとである預言者アヒヤが道で彼に会った。アヒヤは新しい着物を着ていた。そして彼らふたりだけが野にいた。

And it came to pass at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; now [Ahijah] had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field.

アヒヤは着ている着物をつかんで、それを十二切れに裂き、

And Ahijah laid hold of the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces.

ヤラベアムに言った、「あなたは十切れを取りなさい。イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる、『見よ、わたしは国をソロモンの手から裂き離して、あなたに十部族を与えよう。

And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces; for thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee

（ただし彼はわたしのしもべダビデのために、またわたしがイスラエルのすべての部族のうちから選んだ町エルサレムのために、一つの部族をもつであろう）。

(but he shall have one tribe, for my servant David`s sake and for Jerusalem`s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel);

それは彼がわたしを捨てて、シドンびとの女神アシタロテと、モアブの神ケモシと、アンモンの人々の神ミルコムを拝み、父ダビデのように、わたしの道に歩んで、わたしの目にかなう事を行い、わたしの定めと、おきてを守ることをしなかったからである。

because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon; and they have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and [to keep] my statutes and mine ordinances, as did David his father.

しかし、わたしは国をことごとくは彼の手から取らない。わたしが選んだ、わたしのしもべダビデが、わたしの命令と定めとを守ったので、わたしは彼のためにソロモンを一生の間、君としよう。

Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand; but I will make him prince all the days of his life, for David my servant`s sake whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes;

そして、わたしはその子の手から国を取って、その十部族をあなたに与える。

but I will take the kingdom out of his son`s hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes.

その子には一つの部族を与えて、わたしの名を置くために選んだ町エルサレムで、わたしのしもべダビデに、わたしの前に常に一つのともしびを保たせるであろう。

And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a lamp alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.

わたしがあなたを選び、あなたはすべて心の望むところを治めて、イスラエルの上に王となるであろう。

And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel.

もし、あなたが、わたしの命じるすべての事を聞いて、わたしの道に歩み、わたしの目にかなう事を行い、わたしのしもべダビデがしたように、わたしの定めと戒めとを守るならば、わたしはあなたと共にいて、わたしがダビデのために建てたように、あなたのために堅固な家を建てて、イスラエルをあなたに与えよう。

And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that which is right in mine eyes, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with thee, and will build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee.

わたしはこのためにダビデの子孫を苦しめる。しかし永久にではない』」。

And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever.

ソロモンはヤラベアムを殺そうとしたが、ヤラベアムは立ってエジプトにのがれ、エジプト王シシャクのところへ行って、ソロモンの死ぬまでエジプトにいた。

Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam; but Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, unto Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

ソロモンのそのほかの事績と、彼がしたすべての事およびその知恵は、ソロモンの事績の書にしるされているではないか。

Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?

ソロモンがエルサレムでイスラエルの全地を治めた日は四十年であった。

And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.

ソロモンはその先祖と共に眠って、父ダビデの町に葬られ、その子レハベアムが代って王となった。

And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.

第12章

レハベアムはシケムへ行った。すべてのイスラエルびとが彼を王にしようとシケムへ行ったからである。

And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

ネバテの子ヤラベアムはソロモンを避けてエジプトにのがれ、なおそこにいたが、これを聞いてエジプトから帰ったので、

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was yet in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt,

人々は人をつかわして彼を招いた。そしてヤラベアムとイスラエルの会衆は皆レハベアムの所にきて言った、

and they sent and called him), that Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,

「父上はわれわれのくびきを重くされましたが、今父上のきびしい使役と、父上がわれわれに負わせられた重いくびきとを軽くしてください。そうすればわれわれはあなたに仕えます」。

Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

レハベアムは彼らに言った、「去って、三日過ぎてから、またわたしのところにきなさい」。それで民は立ち去った。

And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

レハベアム王は父ソロモンの存命中ソロモンに仕えた老人たちに相談して言った、「この民にどう返答すればよいと思いますか」。

And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?

彼らはレハベアムに言った、「もし、あなたが、きょう、この民のしもべとなって彼らに仕え、彼らに答えるとき、ねんごろに語られるならば、彼らは永久にあなたのしもべとなるでしょう」。

And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

しかし彼は老人たちが与えた勧めを捨てて、自分と一緒に大きくなって自分に仕えている若者たちに相談して、

But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men that were grown up with him, that stood before him.

彼らに言った、「この民がわたしにむかって『あなたの父がわれわれに負わせたくびきを軽くしてください』というのに、われわれはなんと返答すればよいと思いますか」。

And he said unto them, What counsel give ye, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke that thy father did put upon us lighter?

彼と一緒に大きくなった若者たちは彼に言った、「あなたにむかって『父上はわれわれのくびきを重くされましたが、あなたは、それをわれわれのために軽くしてください』と言うこの民に、こう言いなさい、『わたしの小指は父の腰よりも太い。

And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou say unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou speak unto them, My little finger is thicker than my father`s loins.

父はあなたがたに重いくびきを負わせたが、わたしはさらに、あなたがたのくびきを重くしよう。父はむちであなたがたを懲らしたが、わたしはさそりをもってあなたがたを懲らそう』と」。

And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

さてヤラベアムと民は皆、王が「三日目に再びわたしのところに来るように」と言ったとおりに、三日目にレハベアムのところにきた。

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come to me again the third day.

王は荒々しく民に答え、老人たちが与えた勧めを捨てて、

And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him,

若者たちの勧めに従い、彼らに告げて言った、「父はあなたがたのくびきを重くしたが、わたしはあなたがたのくびきを、さらに重くしよう。父はむちであなたがたを懲らしたが、わたしはさそりをもってあなたがたを懲らそう」。

and spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

このように王は民の言うことを聞きいれなかった。これはかつて主がシロびとアヒヤによって、ネバテの子ヤラベアムに言われた言葉を成就するために、主が仕向けられた事であった。

So the king hearkened not unto the people; for it was a thing brought about of Jehovah, that he might establish his word, which Jehovah spake by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

イスラエルの人々は皆、王が自分たちの言うことを聞きいれないのを見たので、民は王に答えて言った、「われわれはダビデのうちに何の分があろうか、エッサイの子のうちに嗣業がない。イスラエルよ、あなたがたの天幕へ帰れ。ダビデよ、今自分の家の事を見よ」。そしてイスラエルはその天幕へ去っていった。

And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

しかしレハベアムはユダの町々に住んでいるイスラエルの人々を治めた。

But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

レハベアム王は徴募の監督であったアドラムをつかわしたが、イスラエルが皆、彼を石で撃ち殺したので、レハベアム王は急いで車に乗り、エルサレムへ逃げた。

Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the men subject to taskwork; and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. And king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

こうしてイスラエルはダビデの家にそむいて今日に至った。

So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

イスラエルは皆ヤラベアムの帰ってきたのを聞き、人をつかわして彼を集会に招き、イスラエルの全家の上に王とした。ユダの部族のほかはダビデの家に従う者がなかった。

And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was returned, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

ソロモンの子レハベアムはエルサレムに来て、ユダの全家とベニヤミンの部族の者、すなわちえり抜きの軍人十八万を集め、国を取りもどすために、イスラエルの家と戦おうとしたが、

And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, that were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

神の言葉が神の人シマヤに臨んだ、

But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

「ソロモンの子であるユダの王レハベアム、およびユダとベニヤミンの全家、ならびにそのほかの民に言いなさい、

Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,

『主はこう仰せられる。あなたがたは上っていってはならない。あなたがたの兄弟であるイスラエルの人々と戦ってはならない。おのおの家に帰りなさい。この事はわたしから出たのである』」。それで彼らは主の言葉をきき、主の言葉に従って帰っていった。

Thus saith Jehovah, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is of me. So they hearkened unto the word of Jehovah, and returned and went their way, according to the word of Jehovah.

ヤラベアムはエフライムの山地にシケムを建てて、そこに住んだ。彼はまたそこから出てペヌエルを建てた。

Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and he went out from thence, and built Penuel.

しかしヤラベアムはその心のうちに言った、「国は今ダビデの家にもどるであろう。

And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now will the kingdom return to the house of David:

もしこの民がエルサレムにある主の宮に犠牲をささげるために上るならば、この民の心はユダの王である彼らの主君レハベアムに帰り、わたしを殺して、ユダの王レハベアムに帰るであろう」。

if this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of Jehovah at Jerusalem, then will the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.

そこで王は相談して、二つの金の子牛を造り、民に言った、「あなたがたはもはやエルサレムに上るには、およばない。イスラエルよ、あなたがたをエジプトの国から導き上ったあなたがたの神を見よ」。

Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

そして彼は一つをベテルにすえ、一つをダンに置いた。

And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan.

この事は罪となった。民がベテルへ行って一つを礼拝し、ダンへ行って一つを礼拝したからである。

And this thing became a sin; for the people went [to worship] before the one, even unto Dan.

彼はまた高き所に家を造り、レビの子孫でない一般の民を祭司に任命した。

And he made houses of high places, and made priests from among all the people, that were not of the sons of Levi.

またヤラベアムはユダで行う祭と同じ祭を八月の十五日に定め、そして祭壇に上った。彼はベテルでそのように行い、彼が造った子牛に犠牲をささげた。また自分の造った高き所の祭司をベテルに立てた。

And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he went up unto the altar; so did he in Beth-el, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places that he had made.

こうして彼はベテルに造った祭壇に八月の十五日に上った。これは彼が自分で勝手に考えついた月であった。そして彼はイスラエルの人々のために祭を定め、祭壇に上って香をたいた。

And he went up unto the altar which he had made in Beth-el on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart: and he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and went up unto the altar, to burn incense.

第13章

見よ、神の人が主の命によってユダからベテルにきた。その時ヤラベアムは祭壇の上に立って香をたいていた。

And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of Jehovah unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.

神の人は祭壇にむかい主の命によって呼ばわって言った、「祭壇よ、祭壇よ、主はこう仰せられる、『見よ、ダビデの家にひとりの子が生れる。その名をヨシヤという。彼はおまえの上で香をたく高き所の祭司らを、おまえの上にささげる。また人の骨がおまえの上で焼かれる』」。

And he cried against the altar by the word of Jehovah, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith Jehovah: Behold, a son shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he sacrifice the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men`s bones shall they burn upon thee.

その日、彼はまた一つのしるしを示して言った、「主の言われたしるしはこれである、『見よ、祭壇は裂け、その上にある灰はこぼれ出るであろう』」。

And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which Jehovah hath spoken: Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

ヤラベアム王は、神の人がベテルにある祭壇にむかって呼ばわる言葉を聞いた時、祭壇から手を伸ばして、「彼を捕えよ」と言ったが、彼にむかって伸ばした手が枯れて、ひっ込めることができなかった。

And it came to pass, when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Beth-el, that Jeroboam put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to him.

そして神の人が主の言葉をもって示したしるしのように祭壇は裂け、灰は祭壇からこぼれ出た。

The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of Jehovah.

王は神の人に言った、「あなたの神、主に願い、わたしのために祈って、わたしの手をもとに返らせてください」。神の人が主に願ったので、王の手はもとに返って、前のようになった。

And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Entreat now the favor of Jehovah thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God entreated Jehovah, and the king`s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

そこで王は神の人に言った、「わたしと一緒に家にきて、身を休めなさい。あなたに謝礼をさしあげましょう」。

And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

神の人は王に言った、「たとい、あなたの家の半ばをくださっても、わたしはあなたと一緒にまいりません。またこの所では、パンも食べず水も飲みません。

And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thy house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place;

主の言葉によってわたしは、『パンを食べてはならない、水を飲んではならない。また来た道から帰ってはならない』と命じられているからです」。

for so was it charged me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Thou shalt eat no bread, nor drink water, neither return by the way that thou camest.

こうして彼はほかの道を行き、ベテルに来た道からは帰らなかった。

So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el.

さてベテルにひとりの年老いた預言者が住んでいたが、そのむすこたちがきて、その日神の人がベテルでした事どもを彼に話した。また神の人が王に言った言葉をもその父に話した。

Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them also they told unto their father.

父が彼らに「その人はどの道を行ったか」と聞いたので、むすこたちはユダからきた神の人の行った道を父に示した。

And their father said unto them, What way went he? Now his sons had seen what way the man of God went, that came from Judah.

父はむすこたちに言った、「わたしのためにろばにくらを置きなさい」。彼らがろばにくらを置いたので、彼はそれに乗り、

And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass; and he rode thereon.

神の人のあとを追って行き、かしの木の下にすわっているのを見て、その人に言った、「あなたはユダからこられた神の人ですか」。その人は言った、「そうです」。

And he went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak; and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.

そこで彼はその人に言った、「わたしと一緒に家にきてパンを食べてください」。

Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.

その人は言った、「わたしはあなたと一緒に引き返すことはできません。あなたと一緒に行くことはできません。またわたしはこの所であなたと一緒にパンも食べず水も飲みません。

And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee; neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:

主の言葉によってわたしは、『その所でパンを食べてはならない、水を飲んではならない。また来た道から帰ってはならない』と言われているからです」。

for it was said to me by the word of Jehovah, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

彼はその人に言った、「わたしもあなたと同じ預言者ですが、天の使が主の命によってわたしに告げて、『その人を一緒に家につれ帰り、パンを食べさせ、水を飲ませよ』と言いました」。これは彼がその人を欺いたのである。

And he said unto him, I also am a prophet as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Bring him back with thee into thy house, that he may eat bread and drink water. [But] he lied unto him.

そこでその人は彼と一緒に引き返し、その家でパンを食べ、水を飲んだ。

So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

彼らが食卓についていたとき、主の言葉が、その人をつれて帰った預言者に臨んだので、

And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet that brought him back;

彼はユダからきた神の人にむかい呼ばわって言った、「主はこう仰せられます、『あなたが主の言葉にそむき、あなたの神、主がお命じになった命令を守らず、

and he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Forasmuch as thou hast been disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah, and hast not kept the commandment which Jehovah thy God commanded thee,

引き返して、主があなたに、パンを食べてはならない、水を飲んではならない、と言われた場所でパンを食べ、水を飲んだゆえ、あなたの死体はあなたの先祖の墓に行かないであろう』」。

but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy body shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

そしてその人がパンを食べ、水を飲んだ後、彼はその人のため、すなわちつれ帰った預言者のためにろばにくらを置いた。

And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, [to wit], for the prophet whom he had brought back.

こうしてその人は立ち去ったが、道でししが彼に会って彼を殺した。そしてその死体は道に捨てられ、ろばはそのかたわらに立ち、ししもまた死体のかたわらに立っていた。

And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his body was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it; the lion also stood by the body.

人々はそこをとおって、道に捨てられている死体と、死体のかたわらに立っているししを見て、かの老預言者の住んでいる町にきてそれを話した。

And, behold, men passed by, and saw the body cast in the way, and the lion standing by the body; and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

その人を道からつれて帰った預言者はそれを聞いて言った、「それは主の言葉にそむいた神の人だ。主が彼に言われた言葉のように、主は彼をししにわたされ、ししが彼を裂き殺したのだ」。

And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah: therefore Jehovah hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake unto him.

そしてむすこたちに言った、「わたしのためにろばにくらを置きなさい」。彼らがくらを置いたので、

And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled it.

彼は行って、死体が道に捨てられ、ろばとししが死体のかたわらに立っているのを見た。ししはその死体を食べず、ろばも裂いていなかった。

And he went and found his body cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the body: the lion had not eaten the body, nor torn the ass.

そこで預言者は神の人の死体を取りあげ、それをろばに載せて町に持ち帰り、悲しんでそれを葬った。

And the prophet took up the body of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back; and he came to the city of the old prophet, to mourn, and to bury him.

すなわちその死体を自分の墓に納め、皆これがために「ああ、わが兄弟よ」と言って悲しんだ。

And he laid his body in his own grave; and they mourned over him, [saying], Alas, my brother!

彼はそれを葬って後、むすこたちに言った、「わたしが死んだ時は、神の人を葬った墓に葬り、わたしの骨を彼の骨のかたわらに納めなさい。

And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.

彼が主の命によって、ベテルにある祭壇にむかい、またサマリヤの町々にある高き所のすべての家にむかって呼ばわった言葉は必ず成就するのです」。

For the saying which he cried by the word of Jehovah against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

この事の後も、ヤラベアムはその悪い道を離れて立ち返ることをせず、また一般の民を、高き所の祭司に任命した。すなわち、だれでも好む者は、それを立てて高き所の祭司とした。

After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again from among all the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, that there might be priests of the high places.

この事はヤラベアムの家の罪となって、ついにこれを地のおもてから断ち滅ぼすようになった。

And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

第14章

そのころヤラベアムの子アビヤが病気になったので、

At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick.

ヤラベアムは妻に言った、「立って姿を変え、ヤラベアムの妻であることの知られないようにしてシロへ行きなさい。わたしがこの民の王となることを、わたしに告げた預言者アヒヤがそこにいます。

And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and get thee to Shiloh: behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, who spake concerning me that I should be king over this people.

パン十個と菓子数個および、みつ一びんを携えて彼のところへ行きなさい。彼はこの子がどうなるかをあなたに告げるでしょう」。

And take with thee ten loaves, and cakes, and a cruse of honey, and go to him: he will tell thee what shall become of the child.

ヤラベアムの妻はそのようにして、立ってシロへ行き、アヒヤの家に着いたが、アヒヤは年老いたため、目がかすんで見ることができなかった。

And Jeroboam`s wife did so, and arose, and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. Now Ahijah could not see; for his eyes were set by reason of his age.

しかし主はアヒヤに言われた、「ヤラベアムの妻が子供の事をあなたに尋ねるために来る。子供は病気だ。あなたは彼女にこうこう言わなければならない」。彼女は来るとき、他人を装っていた。

And Jehovah said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam cometh to inquire of thee concerning her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her; for it will be, when she cometh in, that she will feign herself to be another woman.

しかし彼女が戸口にはいってきたとき、アヒヤはその足音を聞いて言った、「ヤラベアムの妻よ、はいりなさい。なぜ、他人を装うのですか。わたしはあなたにきびしい事を告げるよう、命じられています。

And it was so, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam; why feignest thou thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy tidings.

行ってヤラベアムに言いなさい、『イスラエルの神、主はこう仰せられる、「わたしはあなたを民のうちからあげ、わたしの民イスラエルの上に立てて君とし、

Go, tell Jeroboam, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Forasmuch as I exalted thee from among the people, and made thee prince over my people Israel,

国をダビデの家から裂き離して、それをあなたに与えたのに、あなたはわたしのしもべダビデが、わたしの命令を守って一心にわたしに従い、ただわたしの目にかなった事のみを行ったようにではなく、

and rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it thee; and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine eyes,

あなたよりも先にいたすべての者にまさって悪をなし、行って自分のために他の神々と鋳た像を造り、わたしを怒らせ、わたしをうしろに捨て去った。

but hast done evil above all that were before thee, and hast gone and made thee other gods, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back:

それゆえ、見よ、わたしはヤラベアムの家に災を下し、ヤラベアムに属する男は、イスラエルについて、つながれた者も、自由な者もことごとく断ち、人があくたを残りなく焼きつくすように、ヤラベアムの家を全く断ち滅ぼすであろう。

therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam every man-child, him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel, and will utterly sweep away the house of Jeroboam, as a man sweepeth away dung, till it be all gone.

ヤラベアムに属する者は、町で死ぬ者を犬が食べ、野で死ぬ者を空の鳥が食べるであろう。主がこれを言われるのである」』。

Him that dieth of Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the birds of the heavens eat: for Jehovah hath spoken it.

あなたは立って、家へ帰りなさい。あなたの足が町にはいる時に、子どもは死にます。

Arise thou therefore, get thee to thy house: [and] when thy feet enter into the city, the child shall die.

そしてイスラエルは皆、彼のために悲しんで彼を葬るでしょう。ヤラベアムに属する者は、ただ彼だけ墓に葬られるでしょう。ヤラベアムの家のうちで、彼はイスラエルの神、主にむかって良い思いをいだいていたからです。

And all Israel shall mourn for him, and bury him; for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward Jehovah, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.

主はイスラエルの上にひとりの王を起されます。彼はその日ヤラベアムの家を断つでしょう。

Moreover Jehovah will raise him up a king over Israel, who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day: but what? even now.

その後主はイスラエルを撃って、水に揺らぐ葦のようにし、イスラエルを、その先祖に賜わったこの良い地から抜き去って、ユフラテ川の向こうに散らされるでしょう。彼らがアシラ像を造って主を怒らせたからです。

For Jehovah will smite Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water; and he will root up Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers, and will scatter them beyond the River, because they have made their Asherim, provoking Jehovah to anger.

主はヤラベアムの罪のゆえに、すなわち彼がみずから犯し、またイスラエルに犯させたその罪のゆえにイスラエルを捨てられるでしょう」。

And he will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he hath sinned, and wherewith he hath made Israel to sin.

ヤラベアムの妻は立って去り、テルザへ行って、家の敷居をまたいだ時、子どもは死んだ。

And Jeroboam`s wife arose, and departed, and came to Tirzah: [and] as she came to the threshold of the house, the child died.

イスラエルは皆彼を葬り、彼のために悲しんだ。主がそのしもべ預言者アヒヤによって言われた言葉のとおりである。

And all Israel buried him, and mourned for him, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake by his servant Ahijah the prophet.

ヤラベアムのその他の事績、彼がどのように戦い、どのように世を治めたかは、イスラエルの王の歴代志の書にしるされている。

And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he warred, and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

ヤラベアムが世を治めた日は二十二年であった。彼はその先祖と共に眠って、その子ナダブが代って王となった。

And the days which Jeroboam reigned were two and twenty years: and he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his stead.

ソロモンの子レハベアムはユダで世を治めた。レハベアムは王となったとき四十一歳であったが、主がその名を置くために、イスラエルのすべての部族のうちから選ばれた町エルサレムで、十七年世を治めた。その母の名はナアマといってアンモンびとであった。

And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which Jehovah had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there: and his mother`s name was Naamah the Ammonitess.

ユダの人々はその先祖の行ったすべての事にまさって、主の目の前に悪を行い、その犯した罪によって主の怒りを引き起した。

And Judah did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they committed, above all that their fathers had done.

彼らもすべての高い丘の上と、すべての青木の下に、高き所と石の柱とアシラ像とを建てたからである。

For they also built them high places, and pillars, and Asherim, on every high hill, and under every green tree;

その国にはまた神殿男娼たちがいた。彼らは主がイスラエルの人々の前から追い払われた国民のすべての憎むべき事をならい行った。

and there were also sodomites in the land: they did according to all the abominations of the nations which Jehovah drove out before the children of Israel.

レハベアムの王の第五年にエジプトの王シシャクがエルサレムに攻め上ってきて、

And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem;

主の宮の宝物と、王の宮殿の宝物を奪い去った。彼はそれをことごとく奪い去り、またソロモンの造った金の盾をみな奪い去った。

and he took away the treasures of the house of Jehovah, and the treasures of the king`s house; he even took away all: and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

レハベアムはその代りに青銅の盾を造って、王の宮殿の門を守る侍衛長の手にわたした。

And king Rehoboam made in their stead shields of brass, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who kept the door of the king`s house.

王が主の宮にはいるごとに、侍衛はそれを携え、また、それを侍衛のへやへ持ち帰った。

レハベアムはその先祖と共に眠って先祖と共にダビデの町に葬られた。その母の名はナアマといってアンモンびとであった。その子アビヤムが代って王となった。

And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and his mother`s name was Naamah the Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in his stead.

第15章

ネバテの子ヤラベアム王の第十八年にアビヤムがユダの王となり、

Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam the son of Nebat began Abijam to reign over Judah.

エルサレムで三年世を治めた。その母の名はマアカといって、アブサロムの娘であった。

Three years reigned he in Jerusalem: and his mother`s name was Maacah the daughter of Abishalom.

彼はその父が先に行ったもろもろの罪をおこない、その心は父ダビデの心のようにその神、主に対して全く真実ではなかった。

And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him; and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, as the heart of David his father.

それにもかかわらず、その神、主はダビデのために、エルサレムにおいて彼に一つのともしびを与え、その子を彼のあとに立てて、エルサレムを固められた。

Nevertheless for David`s sake did Jehovah his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem;

それはダビデがヘテびとウリヤの事のほか、一生の間、主の目にかなう事を行い、主が命じられたすべての事に、そむかなかったからである。

because David did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, and turned not aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

And Abijam slept with his fathers; and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead.

イスラエルの王ヤラベアムの第二十年にアサはユダの王となり、

And in the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel began Asa to reign over Judah.

エルサレムで四十一年世を治めた。その母の名はマアカといってアブサロムの娘であった。

And forty and one years reigned he in Jerusalem: and his mother`s name was Maacah the daughter of Abishalom.

アサはその父ダビデがしたように主の目にかなう事をし、

And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, as did David his father.

神殿男娼を国から追い出し、先祖たちの造ったもろもろの偶像を除いた。

And he put away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.

彼はまたその母マアカが、アシラのために憎むべき像を造らせたので、彼女を太后の位から退けた。そしてアサはその憎むべき像を切り倒してキデロンの谷で焼き捨てた。

And also Maacah his mother he removed from being queen, because she had made an abominable image for an Asherah; and Asa cut down her image, and burnt it at the brook Kidron.

ただし高き所は除かなかった。けれどもアサの心は一生の間、主に対して全く真実であった。

But the high places were not taken away: nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect with Jehovah all his days.

彼は父の献納した物と自分の献納した物、金銀および器物を主の宮に携え入れた。

And he brought into the house of Jehovah the things that his father had dedicated, and the things that himself had dedicated, silver, and gold, and vessels.

アサとイスラエルの王バアシャの間には一生の間、戦争があった。

And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.

イスラエルの王バアシャはユダに攻め上り、ユダの王アサの所に、だれをも出入りさせないためにラマを築いた。

And Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah, and built Ramah, that he might not suffer any one to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah.

そこでアサは主の宮の宝蔵と、王の宮殿の宝蔵に残っている金銀をことごとく取って、これを家来たちの手にわたし、そしてアサ王は彼らをダマスコに住んでいるスリヤの王、ヘジョンの子タブリモンの子であるベネハダデにつかわして言わせた、

Then Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of Jehovah, and the treasures of the king`s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants; and king Asa sent them to Ben-hadad, the son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,

「わたしの父とあなたの父との間に結ばれていたように、わたしとあなたの間に同盟を結びましょう。わたしはあなたに金銀の贈り物をさしあげます。行って、あなたとイスラエルの王バアシャとの同盟を破棄し、彼をわたしの所から撤退させてください」。

[There is] a league between me and thee, between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent unto thee a present of silver and gold; go, break thy league with Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.

ベネハダデはアサ王の言うことを聞き、自分の軍勢の長たちをつかわしてイスラエルの町々を攻め、イヨンとダンとアベル・ベテ・マアカおよびキンネレテの全地と、ナフタリの全地を撃った。

And Ben-hadad hearkened unto king Asa, and sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Israel, and smote Ijon, and Dan, and Abel-beth-maacah, and all Chinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali.

バアシャはこれを聞き、ラマを築くことをやめて、テルザにとどまった。

And it came to pass, when Baasha heard thereof, that he left off building Ramah, and dwelt in Tirzah.

そこでアサ王はユダ全国に布告を発した。ひとりも免れる者はなかった。すなわちバアシャがラマを築くために用いた石と材木を運びこさせ、アサ王はそれを用いて、ベニヤミンのゲバとミヅパを築いた。

Then king Asa made a proclamation unto all Judah; none was exempted: and they carried away the stones of Ramah, and the timber thereof, wherewith Baasha had builded; and king Asa built therewith Geba of Benjamin, and Mizpah.

アサのその他の事績とそのすべての勲功と、彼がしたすべての事および彼が建てた町々は、ユダの王の歴代志の書にしるされているではないか。彼は老年になって足を病んだ。

Now the rest of all the acts of Asa, and all his might, and all that he did, and the cities which he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? But in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet.

アサはその先祖と共に眠って、父ダビデの町に先祖と共に葬られ、その子ヨシャパテが代って王となった。

And Asa slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father; and Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead.

ユダの王アサの第二年にヤラベアムの子ナダブがイスラエルの王となって、二年イスラエルを治めた。

And Nadab the son of Jeroboam began to reign over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah; and he reigned over Israel two years.

彼は主の目の前に悪を行い、その父の道に歩み、父がイスラエルに犯させた罪をおこなった。

And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin.

イッサカルの家のアヒヤの子バアシャは彼に対してむほんを企て、ペリシテびとに属するギベトンで彼を撃った。これはナダブとイスラエルが皆ギベトンを囲んでいたからである。

And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him; and Baasha smote him at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines; for Nadab and all Israel were laying siege to Gibbethon.

こうしてユダの王アサの第三年にバアシャは彼を殺し、彼に代って王となった。

Even in the third year of Asa king of Judah did Baasha slay him, and reigned in his stead.

彼は王となるとすぐヤラベアムの全家を撃ち、息のある者をひとりもヤラベアムの家に残さず、ことごとく滅ぼした。主がそのしもべシロびとアヒヤによって言われた言葉のとおりであって、

And it came to pass that, as soon as he was king, he smote all the house of Jeroboam: he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him; according unto the saying of Jehovah, which he spake by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite;

これはヤラベアムがみずから犯し、またイスラエルに犯させた罪のため、また彼がイスラエルの神、主を怒らせたその怒りによるのであった。

for the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and wherewith he made Israel to sin, because of his provocation wherewith he provoked Jehovah, the God of Israel, to anger.

In the third year of Asa king of Judah began Baasha the son of Ahijah to reign over all Israel in Tirzah, [and reigned] twenty and four years.

彼は主の目の前に悪を行い、ヤラベアムの道に歩み、ヤラベアムがイスラエルに犯させた罪をおこなった。

And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and walked in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin.

第16章

そこで主の言葉がハナニの子エヒウに臨み、バアシャを責めて言った、

And the word of Jehovah came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha, saying,

「わたしはあなたをちりの中からあげて、わたしの民イスラエルの上に君としたが、あなたはヤラベアムの道に歩み、わたしの民イスラエルに罪を犯させ、その罪をもってわたしを怒らせた。

Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel, and thou hast walked in the way of Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to provoke me to anger with their sins;

それでわたしは、バアシャとその家を全く滅ぼし去り、あなたの家をネバテの子ヤラベアムの家のようにする。

behold, I will utterly sweep away Baasha and his house; and I will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

バアシャに属する者で、町で死ぬ者は犬が食べ、彼に属する者で、野で死ぬ者は空の鳥が食べるであろう」。

Him that dieth of Baasha in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth of his in the field shall the birds of the heavens eat.

バアシャのその他の事績と、彼がした事と、その勲功とは、イスラエルの王の歴代志の書にしるされているではないか。

Now the rest of the acts of Baasha, and what he did, and his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

バアシャはその先祖と共に眠って、テルザに葬られ、その子エラが代って王となった。

And Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buried in Tirzah; and Elah his son reigned in his stead.

主の言葉はまたハナニの子預言者エヒウによって臨み、バアシャとその家を責めた。これは彼が主の目の前に、もろもろの悪を行い、その手のわざをもって主を怒らせ、ヤラベアムの家にならったためであり、また彼がヤラベアムの家を滅ぼしたためであった。

And moreover by the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of Jehovah against Baasha, and against his house, both because of all the evil that he did in the sight of Jehovah, to provoke him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam, and because he smote him.

ユダの王アサの第二十六年にバアシャの子エラはテルザでイスラエルの王となり、二年世を治めた。

In the twenty and sixth year of Asa king of Judah began Elah the son of Baasha to reign over Israel in Tirzah, [and reigned] two years.

彼がテルザにいて、テルザの宮殿のつかさアルザの家で酒を飲んで酔った時、その家来で戦車隊の半ばを指揮していたジムリが、彼にそむいた。

And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him. Now he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza, who was over the household in Tirzah:

そしてユダの王アサの第二十七年にジムリは、はいってきて彼を撃ち殺し、彼に代って王となった。

and Zimri went in and smote him, and killed him, in the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his stead.

ジムリは王となって、位についた時、バアシャの全家を殺し、その親族または友だちの男子は、ひとりも残さなかった。

And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he smote all the house of Baasha: he left him not a single man-child, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends.

こうしてジムリはバアシャの全家を滅ぼした。主が預言者エヒウによってバアシャを責めて言われた言葉のとおりである。

Thus did Zimri destroy all the house of Baasha, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake against Baasha by Jehu the prophet,

これはバアシャのもろもろの罪と、その子エラの罪のためであって、彼らが罪を犯し、またイスラエルに罪を犯させ、彼らの偶像をもってイスラエルの神、主を怒らせたからである。

for all the sins of Baasha, and the sins of Elah his son, which they sinned, and wherewith they made Israel to sin, to provoke Jehovah, the God of Israel, to anger with their vanities.

ユダの王アサの第二十七年にジムリはテルザで七日の間、世を治めた。民はペリシテびとに属するギベトンにむかって陣取っていたが、

In the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah did Zimri reign seven days in Tirzah. Now the people were encamped against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines.

その陣取っていた民が「ジムリはむほんを起して王を殺した」と人のいうのを聞いたので、イスラエルは皆その日陣営で、軍の長オムリをイスラエルの王とした。

And the people that were encamped heard say, Zimri hath conspired, and hath also smitten the king: wherefore all Israel made Omri, the captain of the host, king over Israel that day in the camp.

そこでオムリはイスラエルの人々と共にギベトンから上ってテルザを囲んだ。

And Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah.

ジムリはその町の陥るのを見て、王の宮殿の天守にはいり、王の宮殿に火をかけてその中で死んだ。

And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the castle of the king`s house, and burnt the king`s house over him with fire, and died,

これは彼が犯した罪のためであって、彼が主の目の前に悪を行い、ヤラベアムの道に歩み、ヤラベアムがイスラエルに犯させたその罪を行ったからである。

for his sins which he sinned in doing that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, in walking in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin which he did, to make Israel to sin.

ジムリのその他の事績と、彼が企てた陰謀は、イスラエルの王の歴代志の書にしるされているではないか。

Now the rest of the acts of Zimri, and his treason that he wrought, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

その時イスラエルの民は二つに分れ、民の半ばはギナテの子テブニに従って、これを王としようとし、半ばはオムリに従った。

Then were the people of Israel divided into two parts: half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king; and half followed Omri.

しかしオムリに従った民はギナテの子テブニに従った民に勝って、テブニは死に、オムリが王となった。

But the people that followed Omri prevailed against the people that followed Tibni the son of Ginath: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned.

ユダの王アサの第三十一年にオムリはイスラエルの王となって十二年世を治めた。彼はテルザで六年王であった。

In the thirty and first year of Asa king of Judah began Omri to reign over Israel, [and reigned] twelve years: six years reigned he in Tirzah.

彼は銀二タラントでセメルからサマリヤの山を買い、その上に町を建て、その建てた町の名をその山の持ち主であったセメルの名に従ってサマリヤと呼んだ。

And he bought the hill Samaria of Shemer for two talents of silver; and he built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, after the name of Shemer, the owner of the hill, Samaria.

オムリは主の目の前に悪を行い、彼よりも先にいたすべての者にまさって悪い事をした。

And Omri did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and dealt wickedly above all that were before him.

彼はネバテの子ヤラベアムのすべての道に歩み、ヤラベアムがイスラエルに罪を犯させ、彼らの偶像をもってイスラエルの神、主を怒らせたその罪を行った。

For he walked in all the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sins wherewith he made Israel to sin, to provoke Jehovah, the God of Israel, to anger with their vanities.

オムリが行ったその他の事績と、彼があらわした勲功とは、イスラエルの王の歴代志の書にしるされているではないか。

Now the rest of the acts of Omri which he did, and his might that he showed, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

オムリはその先祖と共に眠って、サマリヤに葬られ、その子アハブが代って王となった。

So Omri slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria; and Ahab his son reigned in his stead.

ユダの王アサの第三十八年にオムリの子アハブがイスラエルの王となった。オムリの子アハブはサマリヤで二十二年イスラエルを治めた。

And in the thirty and eighth year of Asa king of Judah began Ahab the son of Omri to reign over Israel: and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty and two years.

オムリの子アハブは彼よりも先にいたすべての者にまさって、主の目の前に悪を行った。

And Ahab the son of Omri did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah above all that were before him.

彼はネバテの子ヤラベアムの罪を行うことを、軽い事とし、シドンびとの王エテバアルの娘イゼベルを妻にめとり、行ってバアルに仕え、これを拝んだ。

And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

彼はサマリヤに建てたバアルの宮に、バアルのために祭壇を築いた。

And he reared up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.

And Ahab made the Asherah; and Ahab did yet more to provoke Jehovah, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.

In his days did Hiel the Beth-elite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof with the loss of Abiram his first-born, and set up the gates thereof with the loss of his youngest son Segub, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun.

第17章

ギレアデのテシベに住むテシベびとエリヤはアハブに言った、「わたしの仕えているイスラエルの神、主は生きておられます。わたしの言葉のないうちは、数年雨も露もないでしょう」。

And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the sojourners of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

主の言葉がエリヤに臨んだ、

And the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying,

「ここを去って東におもむき、ヨルダンの東にあるケリテ川のほとりに身を隠しなさい。

Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

そしてその川の水を飲みなさい。わたしはからすに命じて、そこであなたを養わせよう」。

And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

エリヤは行って、主の言葉のとおりにした。すなわち行って、ヨルダンの東にあるケリテ川のほとりに住んだ。

So he went and did according unto the word of Jehovah; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

すると、からすが朝ごとに彼の所にパンと肉を運び、また夕ごとにパンと肉を運んできた。そして彼はその川の水を飲んだ。

And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

しかし国に雨がなかったので、しばらくしてその川はかれた。

And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

その時、主の言葉が彼に臨んで言った、

And the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying,

「立ってシドンに属するザレパテへ行って、そこに住みなさい。わたしはそのところのやもめ女に命じてあなたを養わせよう」。

Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Sidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain thee.

そこで彼は立ってザレパテへ行ったが、町の門に着いたとき、ひとりのやもめ女が、その所でたきぎを拾っていた。彼はその女に声をかけて言った、「器に水を少し持ってきて、わたしに飲ませてください」。

So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

彼女が行って、それを持ってこようとした時、彼は彼女を呼んで言った、「手に一口のパンを持ってきてください」。

And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.

彼女は言った、「あなたの神、主は生きておられます。わたしにはパンはありません。ただ、かめに一握りの粉と、びんに少しの油があるだけです。今わたしはたきぎ二、三本を拾い、うちへ帰って、わたしと子供のためにそれを調理し、それを食べて死のうとしているのです」。

And she said, As Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

エリヤは彼女に言った、「恐れるにはおよばない。行って、あなたが言ったとおりにしなさい。しかしまず、それでわたしのために小さいパンを、一つ作って持ってきなさい。その後、あなたと、あなたの子供のために作りなさい。

And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said; but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it forth unto me, and afterward make for thee and for thy son.

『主が雨を地のおもてに降らす日まで、かめの粉は尽きず、びんの油は絶えない』とイスラエルの神、主が言われるからです」。

For thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, The jar of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that Jehovah sendeth rain upon the earth.

彼女は行って、エリヤが言ったとおりにした。彼女と彼および彼女の家族は久しく食べた。

And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat [many] days.

主がエリヤによって言われた言葉のように、かめの粉は尽きず、びんの油は絶えなかった。

The jar of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake by Elijah.

これらの事の後、その家の主婦であるこの女の男の子が病気になった。その病気はたいそう重く、息が絶えたので、

And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

彼女はエリヤに言った、「神の人よ、あなたはわたしに、何の恨みがあるのですか。あなたはわたしの罪を思い出させるため、またわたしの子を死なせるためにおいでになったのですか」。

And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? thou art come unto me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son!

エリヤは彼女に言った、「子をわたしによこしなさい」。そして彼女のふところから子供を取り、自分のいる屋上のへやへかかえて上り、自分の寝台に寝かせ、

And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the chamber, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

主に呼ばわって言った、「わが神、主よ、あなたはわたしが宿っている家のやもめにさえ災をくだして、子供を殺されるのですか」。

And he cried unto Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

そして三度その子供の上に身を伸ばし、主に呼ばわって言った、「わが神、主よ、この子供の魂をもとに帰らせてください」。

And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah my God, I pray thee, let this child`s soul come into him again.

主はエリヤの声を聞きいれられたので、その子供の魂はもとに帰って、彼は生きかえった。

And Jehovah hearkened unto the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother; and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.

And the woman said to Elijah, Now I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of Jehovah in thy mouth is truth.

第18章

多くの日を経て、三年目に主の言葉がエリヤに臨んだ、「行って、あなたの身をアハブに示しなさい。わたしは雨を地に降らせる」。

And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

エリヤはその身をアハブに示そうとして行った。その時、サマリヤにききんが激しかった。

And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And the famine was sore in Samaria.

アハブは家づかさオバデヤを召した。（オバデヤは深く主を恐れる人で、

And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly:

イゼベルが主の預言者を断ち滅ぼした時、オバデヤは百人の預言者を救い出して五十人ずつほら穴に隠し、パンと水をもって彼らを養った）。

for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

アハブはオバデヤに言った、「国中のすべての水の源と、すべての川に行ってみるがよい。馬と騾馬を生かしておくための草があるかもしれない。そうすれば、われわれは家畜をいくぶんでも失わずにすむであろう」。

And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

彼らは行き巡る地をふたりで分け、アハブはひとりでこの道を行き、オバデヤはひとりで他の道を行った。

So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

オバデヤが道を進んでいた時、エリヤが彼に会った。彼はエリヤを認めて伏して言った、「わが主エリヤよ、あなたはここにおられるのですか」。

And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah?

エリヤは彼に言った、「そうです。行って、あなたの主人に、エリヤはここにいると告げなさい」。

And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah [is here].

彼は言った、「わたしにどんな罪があって、あなたはしもべをアハブの手にわたして殺そうとされるのですか。

And he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

あなたの神、主は生きておられます。わたしの主人があなたを尋ねるために、人をつかわさない民はなく、国もありません。そしてエリヤはいないと言う時は、その国、その民に、あなたが見つからないという誓いをさせるのです。

As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

あなたは今『行って、エリヤはここにいると主人に告げよ』と言われます。

And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah [is here].

しかしわたしがあなたを離れて行くと、主の霊はあなたを、わたしの知らない所へ連れて行くでしょう。わたしが行ってアハブに告げ、彼があなたを見つけることができなければ、彼はわたしを殺すでしょう。しかし、しもべは幼い時から主を恐れている者です。

And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth.

イゼベルが主の預言者を殺した時に、わたしがした事、すなわち、わたしが主の預言者のうち百人を五十人ずつほら穴に隠して、パンと水をもって養った事を、わが主は聞かれませんでしたか。

Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah`s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

ところが今あなたは『行って、エリヤはここにいると主人に告げよ』と言われます。そのようなことをすれば彼はわたしを殺すでしょう」。

And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah [is here]; and he will slay me.

エリヤは言った、「わたしの仕える万軍の主は生きておられる。わたしは必ず、きょう、わたしの身を彼に示すであろう」。

And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day.

オバデヤは行ってアハブに会い、彼に告げたので、アハブはエリヤに会おうとして行った。

So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

アハブはエリヤを見たとき、彼に言った、「イスラエルを悩ます者よ、あなたはここにいるのですか」。

And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel?

彼は答えた、「わたしがイスラエルを悩ますのではありません。あなたと、あなたの父の家が悩ましたのです。あなたがたが主の命令を捨て、バアルに従ったためです。

And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father`s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim.

それで今、人をつかわしてイスラエルのすべての人およびバアルの預言者四百五十人、ならびにアシラの預言者四百人、イゼベルの食卓で食事する者たちをカルメル山に集めて、わたしの所にこさせなさい」。

Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel`s table.

そこでアハブはイスラエルのすべての人に人をつかわして、預言者たちをカルメル山に集めた。

So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

そのときエリヤはすべての民に近づいて言った、「あなたがたはいつまで二つのものの間に迷っているのですか。主が神ならばそれに従いなさい。しかしバアルが神ならば、それに従いなさい」。民はひと言も彼に答えなかった。

And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

エリヤは民に言った、「わたしはただひとり残った主の預言者です。しかしバアルの預言者は四百五十人あります。

Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal`s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

われわれに二頭の牛をください。そして一頭の牛を彼らに選ばせ、それを切り裂いて、たきぎの上に載せ、それに火をつけずにおかせなさい。わたしも一頭の牛を整え、それをたきぎの上に載せて火をつけずにおきましょう。

Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under.

こうしてあなたがたはあなたがたの神の名を呼びなさい。わたしは主の名を呼びましょう。そして火をもって答える神を神としましょう」。民は皆答えて「それがよかろう」と言った。

And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

そこでエリヤはバアルの預言者たちに言った、「あなたがたは大ぜいだから初めに一頭の牛を選んで、それを整え、あなたがたの神の名を呼びなさい。ただし火をつけてはなりません」。

And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under.

彼らは与えられた牛を取って整え、朝から昼までバアルの名を呼んで「バアルよ、答えてください」と言った。しかしなんの声もなく、また答える者もなかったので、彼らは自分たちの造った祭壇のまわりに踊った。

And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made.

昼になってエリヤは彼らをあざけって言った、「彼は神だから、大声をあげて呼びなさい。彼は考えにふけっているのか、よそへ行ったのか、旅に出たのか、または眠っていて起されなければならないのか」。

And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked.

そこで彼らは大声に呼ばわり、彼らのならわしに従って、刀とやりで身を傷つけ、血をその身に流すに至った。

And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them.

こうして昼が過ぎても彼らはなお叫び続けて、夕の供え物をささげる時にまで及んだ。しかしなんの声もなく、答える者もなく、また顧みる者もなかった。

And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the [evening] oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

その時エリヤはすべての民にむかって「わたしに近寄りなさい」と言ったので、民は皆彼に近寄った。彼はこわれている主の祭壇を繕った。

And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down.

そしてエリヤは昔、主の言葉がヤコブに臨んで、「イスラエルをあなたの名とせよ」と言われたヤコブの子らの部族の数にしたがって十二の石を取り、

And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name.

その石で主の名によって祭壇を築き、祭壇の周囲に種二セヤをいれるほどの大きさの、みぞを作った。

And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

また、たきぎを並べ、牛を切り裂いてたきぎの上に載せて言った、「四つのかめに水を満たし、それを燔祭とたきぎの上に注げ」。

And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood.

また言った、「それを二度せよ」。二度それをすると、また言った、「三度それをせよ」。三度それをした。

And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time.

水は祭壇の周囲に流れた。またみぞにも水を満たした。

And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

夕の供え物をささげる時になって、預言者エリヤは近寄って言った、「アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの神、主よ、イスラエルでは、あなたが神であること、わたしがあなたのしもべであって、あなたの言葉に従ってこのすべての事を行ったことを、今日知らせてください。

And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the [evening] oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

主よ、わたしに答えてください、わたしに答えてください。主よ、この民にあなたが神であること、またあなたが彼らの心を翻されたのであることを知らせてください」。

Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and [that] thou hast turned their heart back again.

そのとき主の火が下って燔祭と、たきぎと、石と、ちりとを焼きつくし、またみぞの水をなめつくした。

Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

民は皆見て、ひれ伏して言った、「主が神である。主が神である」。

And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God.

エリヤは彼らに言った、「バアルの預言者を捕えよ。そのひとりも逃がしてはならない」。そこで彼らを捕えたので、エリヤは彼らをキション川に連れくだって、そこで彼らを殺した。

and Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

エリヤはアハブに言った、「大雨の音がするから、上って行って、食い飲みしなさい」。

And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.

アハブは食い飲みするために上っていった。しかしエリヤはカルメルの頂に登り、地に伏して顔をひざの間に入れていたが、

So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees.

彼はしもべに言った、「上っていって海の方を見なさい」。彼は上っていって、見て、「何もありません」と言ったので、エリヤは「もう一度行きなさい」と言って七度に及んだ。

And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

七度目にしもべは言った、「海から人の手ほどの小さな雲が起っています」。エリヤは言った、「上っていって、『雨にとどめられないように車を整えて下れ』とアハブに言いなさい」。

And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man`s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready [thy chariot], and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

すると間もなく、雲と風が起り、空が黒くなって大雨が降ってきた。アハブは車に乗ってエズレルへ行った。

And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel:

また主の手がエリヤに臨んだので、彼は腰をからげ、エズレルの入口までアハブの前に走っていった。

and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

第19章

アハブはエリヤのしたすべての事、また彼がすべての預言者を刀で殺したことをイゼベルに告げたので、

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

イゼベルは使者をエリヤにつかわして言った、「もしわたしが、あすの今ごろ、あなたの命をあの人々のひとりの命のようにしていないならば、神々がどんなにでも、わたしを罰してくださるように」。

Then Jezebel send a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time.

そこでエリヤは恐れて、自分の命を救うために立って逃げ、ユダに属するベエルシバへ行って、しもべをそこに残し、

And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

自分は一日の道のりほど荒野にはいって行って、れだまの木の下に座し、自分の死を求めて言った、「主よ、もはや、じゅうぶんです。今わたしの命を取ってください。わたしは先祖にまさる者ではありません」。

But he himself went a day`s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper-tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is enough; now, O Jehovah, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

彼はれだまの木の下に伏して眠ったが、天の使が彼にさわり、「起きて食べなさい」と言ったので、

And he lay down and slept under a juniper-tree; and, behold, an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

起きて見ると、頭のそばに、焼け石の上で焼いたパン一個と、一びんの水があった。彼は食べ、かつ飲んでまた寝た。

And he looked, and, behold, there was at his head a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

主の使は再びきて、彼にさわって言った、「起きて食べなさい。道が遠くて耐えられないでしょうから」。

And the angel of Jehovah came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for thee.

彼は起きて食べ、かつ飲み、その食物で力づいて四十日四十夜行って、神の山ホレブに着いた。

And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

その所で彼はほら穴にはいって、そこに宿ったが、主の言葉が彼に臨んで、彼に言われた、「エリヤよ、あなたはここで何をしているのか」。

And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of Jehovah came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

彼は言った、「わたしは万軍の神、主のために非常に熱心でありました。イスラエルの人々はあなたの契約を捨て、あなたの祭壇をこわし、刀をもってあなたの預言者たちを殺したのです。ただわたしだけ残りましたが、彼らはわたしの命を取ろうとしています」。

And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword: and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

主は言われた、「出て、山の上で主の前に、立ちなさい」。その時主は通り過ぎられ、主の前に大きな強い風が吹き、山を裂き、岩を砕いた。しかし主は風の中におられなかった。風の後に地震があったが、地震の中にも主はおられなかった。

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before Jehovah. And, behold, Jehovah passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before Jehovah; but Jehovah was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but Jehovah was not in the earthquake:

地震の後に火があったが、火の中にも主はおられなかった。火の後に静かな細い声が聞えた。

and after the earthquake a fire; but Jehovah was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

エリヤはそれを聞いて顔を外套に包み、出てほら穴の口に立つと、彼に語る声が聞えた、「エリヤよ、あなたはここで何をしているのか」。

And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

彼は言った、「わたしは万軍の神、主のために非常に熱心でありました。イスラエルの人々はあなたの契約を捨て、あなたの祭壇をこわし、刀であなたの預言者たちを殺したからです。ただわたしだけ残りましたが、彼らはわたしの命を取ろうとしています」。

And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

主は彼に言われた、「あなたの道を帰って行って、ダマスコの荒野におもむき、ダマスコに着いて、ハザエルに油を注ぎ、スリヤの王としなさい。

And Jehovah said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, thou shalt anoint Hazael to be king over Syria;

またニムシの子エヒウに油を注いでイスラエルの王としなさい。またアベルメホラのシャパテの子エリシャに油を注いで、あなたに代って預言者としなさい。

and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

ハザエルのつるぎをのがれる者をエヒウが殺し、エヒウのつるぎをのがれる者をエリシャが殺すであろう。

And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

また、わたしはイスラエルのうちに七千人を残すであろう。皆バアルにひざをかがめず、それに口づけしない者である」。

Yet will I leave [me] seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

さてエリヤはそこを去って行って、シャパテの子エリシャに会った。彼は十二くびきの牛を前に行かせ、自分は十二番目のくびきと共にいて耕していた。エリヤは彼のかたわらを通り過ぎて外套を彼の上にかけた。

So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke [of oxen] before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed over unto him, and cast his mantle upon him.

エリシャは牛を捨て、エリヤのあとに走ってきて言った、「わたしの父母に口づけさせてください。そして後あなたに従いましょう」。エリヤは彼に言った、「行ってきなさい。わたしはあなたに何をしましたか」。

And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again; for what have I done to thee?

エリシャは彼を離れて帰り、ひとくびきの牛を取って殺し、牛のくびきを燃やしてその肉を煮、それを民に与えて食べさせ、立って行ってエリヤに従い、彼に仕えた。

And he returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

第20章

スリヤの王ベネハダデはその軍勢をことごとく集めた。三十二人の王が彼と共におり、また馬と戦車もあった。彼は上ってサマリヤを囲み、これを攻めた。

And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together; and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.

また彼は町に使者をつかわし、イスラエルの王アハブに言った、「ベネハダデはこう申します、

And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel, into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad,

『あなたの金銀はわたしのもの、またあなたの妻たちと子供たちの最も美しい者もわたしのものです』」。

Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.

イスラエルの王は答えた、「王、わが主よ、仰せのとおり、わたしと、わたしの持ち物は皆あなたのものです」。

And the king of Israel answered and said, It is according to thy saying, my lord, O king; I am thine, and all that I have.

使者は再びきて言った、「ベネハダデはこう申します、『わたしはさきに人をつかわして、あなたの金銀、妻子を引きわたせと言いました。

And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, I sent indeed unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;

しかし、あすの今ごろ、しもべたちをあなたにつかわします。彼らはあなたの家と、あなたの家来の家を探って、すべて彼らの気にいる物を手に入れて奪い去るでしょう』」。

but I will send my servants unto thee to-morrow about this time, and they shall search thy house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.

そこでイスラエルの王は国の長老をことごとく召して言った、「よく注意して、この人が無理な事を求めているのを知りなさい。彼は人をつかわして、わたしの妻子と金銀を求めたが、わたしはそれを拒まなかった」。

Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.

すべての長老および民は皆彼に言った、「聞いてはなりません。承諾してはなりません」。

And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken thou not, neither consent.

それで彼はベネハダデの使者に言った、「王、わが主に告げなさい。『あなたが初めに要求されたことは皆いたしましょう。しかし今度の事はできません』」。使者は去って復命した。

Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do; but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.

ベネハダデは彼に人をつかわして言った、「もしサマリヤのちりが、わたしに従うすべての民の手を満たすに足りるならば、神々がどんなにでも、わたしを罰してくださるように」。

And Ben-hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.

イスラエルの王は答えた、「『武具を帯びる者は、それを脱ぐ者のように誇ってはならない』と告げなさい」。

And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on [his armor] boast himself as he that putteth it off.

ベネハダデは仮小屋で、王たちと酒を飲んでいたが、この事を聞いて、その家来たちに言った、「戦いの備えをせよ」。彼らは町にむかって戦いの備えをした。

And it came to pass, when [Ben-hadad] heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings, in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set [yourselves in array]. And they set [themselves in array] against the city.

この時ひとりの預言者がイスラエルの王アハブのもとにきて言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『あなたはこの大軍を見たか。わたしはきょう、これをあなたの手にわたす。あなたは、わたしが主であることを、知るようになるであろう』」。

And, behold, a prophet came near unto Ahab king of Israel, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thy hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am Jehovah.

アハブは言った、「だれにさせましょうか」。彼は言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『地方の代官の家来たちにさせよ』」。アハブは言った、「だれが戦いを始めましょうか」。彼は答えた、「あなたです」。

And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith Jehovah, By the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall begin the battle? And he answered, Thou.

そこでアハブは地方の代官の家来たちを調べたところ二百三十二人あった。次にすべての民、すなわちイスラエルのすべての人を調べたところ七千人あった。

Then he mustered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty-two: and after them he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.

彼らは昼ごろ出ていったが、ベネハダデは仮小屋で、味方の三十二人の王たちと共に酒を飲んで酔っていた。

And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.

地方の代官の家来たちが先に出ていった。ベネハダデは斥候をつかわしたが、彼らは「サマリヤから人々が出てきた」と報告したので、

And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out from Samaria.

彼は言った、「和解のために出てきたのであっても、生どりにせよ。また戦いのために出てきたのであっても、生どりにせよ」。

And he said, Whether they are come out for peace, take them alive, or whether they are come out for war, taken them alive.

地方の代官の家来たちと、それに従う軍勢が町から出ていって、

So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them.

おのおのその相手を撃ち殺したので、スリヤびとは逃げた。イスラエルはこれを追ったが、スリヤの王ベネハダデは馬に乗り、騎兵を従えてのがれた。

And they slew every one his man; and the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen.

イスラエルの王は出ていって、馬と戦車をぶんどり、また大いにスリヤびとを撃ち殺した。

And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.

時に、かの預言者がイスラエルの王のもとにきて言った、「行って、力を養い、なすべき事をよく考えなさい。来年の春にはスリヤの王が、あなたのところに攻め上ってくるからです」。

And the prophet came near to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest; for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.

スリヤの王の家来たちは王に言った、「彼らの神々は山の神ですから彼らがわれわれよりも強かったのです。もしわれわれが平地で戦うならば、必ず彼らよりも強いでしょう。

And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we: but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.

それでこうしなさい。王たちをおのおのその地位から退かせ、総督を置いてそれに代らせなさい。

And do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their room;

またあなたが失った軍勢に等しい軍勢を集め、馬は馬、戦車は戦車をもって補いなさい。こうしてわれわれが平地で戦うならば必ず彼らよりも強いでしょう」。彼はその言葉を聞きいれて、そのようにした。

and number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot; and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.

春になって、ベネハダデはスリヤびとを集めて、イスラエルと戦うために、アペクに上ってきた。

And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad mustered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.

イスラエルの人々は召集され、糧食を受けて彼らを迎え撃つために出かけた。イスラエルの人々はやぎの二つの小さい群れのように彼らの前に陣取ったが、スリヤびとはその地に満ちていた。

And the children of Israel were mustered, and were victualled, and went against them: and the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.

その時神の人がきて、イスラエルの王に言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『スリヤびとが、主は山の神であって、谷の神ではないと言っているから、わたしはこのすべての大軍をあなたの手にわたす。あなたは、わたしが主であることを知るようになるであろう』」。

And a man of God came near and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, Because the Syrians have said, Jehovah is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys; therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thy hand, and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.

彼らは七日の間、互にむかいあって陣取り、七日目になって戦いを交えたが、イスラエルの人々は一日にスリヤびとの歩兵十万人を殺した。

And they encamped one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians a hundred thousand footmen in one day.

そのほかの者はアペクの町に逃げこんだが、城壁がくずれて、その残った二万七千人の上に倒れた。ベネハダデは逃げて町に入り、奥の間にはいった。

But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand men that were left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.

家来たちは彼に言った、「イスラエルの家の王たちはあわれみ深い王であると聞いています。それでわれわれの腰に荒布をつけ、くびになわをかけて、イスラエルの王の所へ行かせてください。たぶん彼はあなたの命を助けるでしょう」。

And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, we pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.

そこで彼らは荒布を腰にまき、なわをくびにかけてイスラエルの王の所へ行って言った、「あなたのしもべベネハダデが『どうぞ、わたしの命を助けてください』と申しています」。アハブは言った、「彼はまだ生きているのですか。彼はわたしの兄弟です」。

So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and [put] ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.

その人々はこれを吉兆としてすみやかに彼の言葉をうけ、「そうです。ベネハダデはあなたの兄弟です」と言ったので、彼は言った、「行って彼をつれてきなさい」。それでベネハダデは彼の所に出てきたので、彼はこれを自分の車に乗せた。

Now the men observed diligently, and hasted to catch whether it were his mind; and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.

ベネハダデは彼に言った、「わたしの父が、あなたの父上から取った町々は返します。またわたしの父がサマリヤに造ったように、あなたはダマスコに、あなたのために市場を設けなさい」。アハブは言った、「わたしはこの契約をもってあなたを帰らせましょう」。こうしてアハブは彼と契約を結び、彼を帰らせた。

And [Ben-hadad] said unto him, The cities which my father took from thy father I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. And I, [said Ahab], will let thee go with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and let him go.

さて預言者のともがらのひとりが主の言葉に従ってその仲間に言った、「どうぞ、わたしを撃ってください」。しかしその人は撃つことを拒んだので、

And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his fellow by the word of Jehovah, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.

彼はその人に言った、「あなたは主の言葉に聞き従わないゆえ、わたしを離れて行くとすぐ、ししがあなたを殺すでしょう」。その人が彼のそばを離れて行くとすぐ、ししが彼に会って彼を殺した。

Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of Jehovah, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.

彼はまたほかの人に会って言った、「どうぞ、わたしを撃ってください」。するとその人は彼を撃ち、撃って傷つけた。

Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, smiting and wounding him.

こうしてその預言者は行って、道のかたわらで王を待ち、目にほうたいを当てて姿を変えていた。

So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes.

王が通り過ぎる時、王に呼ばわって言った、「しもべはいくさの中に出て行きましたが、ある軍人が、ひとりの人をわたしの所につれてきて言いました、『この人を守っていなさい。もし彼がいなくなれば、あなたの命を彼の命に代えるか、または銀一タラントを払わなければならない』。

And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king; and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.

ところが、しもべはあちらこちらと忙しくしていたので、ついに彼はいなくなりました」。イスラエルの王は彼に言った、「あなたはそのとおりにさばかれなければならない。あなたが自分でそれを定めたのです」。

And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.

そこで彼が急いで目のほうたいを取り除いたので、イスラエルの王はそれが預言者のひとりであることを知った。

And he hasted, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.

彼は王に言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『わたしが滅ぼそうと定めた人を、あなたは自分の手から放して行かせたので、あなたの命は彼の命に代り、あなたの民は彼の民に代るであろう』と」。

And he said unto him, Thus saith Jehovah, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.

イスラエルの王は悲しみ、かつ怒って自分の家におもむき、サマリヤに帰った。

And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.

第21章

さてエズレルびとナボテはエズレルにぶどう畑をもっていたが、サマリヤの王アハブの宮殿のかたわらにあったので、

And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

アハブはナボテに言った、「あなたのぶどう畑はわたしの家の近くにあるので、わたしに譲って青物畑にさせてください。その代り、わたしはそれよりも良いぶどう畑をあなたにあげましょう。もしお望みならば、その価を金でさしあげましょう」。

And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house; and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it: or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.

ナボテはアハブに言った、「わたしは先祖の嗣業をあなたに譲ることを断じていたしません」。

And Naboth said to Ahab, Jehovah forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.

アハブはエズレルびとナボテが言った言葉を聞いて、悲しみ、かつ怒って家にはいった。ナボテが「わたしは先祖の嗣業をあなたに譲りません」と言ったからである。アハブは床に伏し、顔をそむけて食事をしなかった。

And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.

妻イゼベルは彼の所にきて、言った、「あなたは何をそんなに悲しんで、食事をなさらないのですか」。

But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread?

彼は彼女に言った、「わたしはエズレルびとナボテに『あなたのぶどう畑を金で譲ってください。もし望むならば、その代りに、ほかのぶどう畑をあげよう』と言ったが、彼は答えて『わたしはぶどう畑を譲りません』と言ったからだ」。

And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee [another] vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard.

妻イゼベルは彼に言った、「あなたが今イスラエルを治めているのですか。起きて食事をし、元気を出してください。わたしがエズレルびとナボテのぶどう畑をあなたにあげます」。

And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thy heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.

彼女はアハブの名で手紙を書き、彼の印をおして、ナボテと同じように、その町に住んでいる長老たちと身分の尊い人々に、その手紙を送った。

So she wrote letters in Ahab`s name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, [and] that dwelt with Naboth.

彼女はその手紙に書きしるした、「断食を布告して、ナボテを民のうちの高い所にすわらせ、

And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people:

またふたりのよこしまな者を彼の前にすわらせ、そして彼を訴えて、『あなたは神と王とをのろった』と言わせなさい。こうして彼を引き出し、石で撃ち殺しなさい」。

and set two men, base fellows, before him, and let them bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst curse God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him to death.

その町の人々、すなわち、その町に住んでいる長老たちおよび身分の尊い人々は、イゼベルが言いつかわしたようにした。彼女が彼らに送った手紙に書きしるされていたように、

And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who dwelt in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, according as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them.

彼らは断食を布告して、ナボテを民のうちの高い所にすわらせた。

They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people.

そしてふたりのよこしまな者がはいってきて、その前にすわり、そのよこしまな者たちが民の前でナボテを訴えて、「ナボテは神と王とをのろった」と言った。そこで人々は彼を町の外に引き出し、石で撃ち殺した。

And the two men, the base fellows, came in and sat before him: and the base fellows bare witness against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did curse God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him to death with stones.

そして人々はイゼベルに「ナボテは石で撃ち殺された」と言い送った。

Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead.

イゼベルはナボテが石で撃ち殺されたのを聞くとすぐ、アハブに言った、「立って、あのエズレルびとナボテが、あなたに金で譲ることを拒んだぶどう畑を取りなさい。ナボテは生きていません。死んだのです」。

And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.

アハブはナボテの死んだのを聞くとすぐ、立って、エズレルびとナボテのぶどう畑を取るために、そこへ下っていった。

And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

そのとき、主の言葉がテシベびとエリヤに臨んだ、

And the word of Jehovah came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

「立って、下って行き、サマリヤにいるイスラエルの王アハブに会いなさい。彼はナボテのぶどう畑を取ろうとしてそこへ下っている。

Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who dwelleth in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to take possession of it.

あなたは彼に言わなければならない、『主はこう仰せられる、あなたは殺したのか、また取ったのか』と。また彼に言いなさい、『主はこう仰せられる、犬がナボテの血をなめた場所で、犬があなたの血をなめるであろう』」。

And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Hast thou killed and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.

アハブはエリヤに言った、「わが敵よ、ついに、わたしを見つけたのか」。彼は言った、「見つけました。あなたが主の目の前に悪を行うことに身をゆだねたゆえ、

And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee, because thou hast sold thyself to do that which is evil in the sight of Jehovah.

わたしはあなたに災を下し、あなたを全く滅ぼし、アハブに属する男は、イスラエルにいてつながれた者も、自由な者もことごとく断ち、

Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will utterly sweep thee away and will cut off from Ahab every man-child, and him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel:

またあなたの家をネバテの子ヤラベアムの家のようにし、アヒヤの子バアシャの家のようにするでしょう。これはあなたがわたしを怒らせた怒りのゆえ、またイスラエルに罪を犯させたゆえです。

and I will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and hast made Israel to sin.

イゼベルについて、主はまた言われました、『犬がエズレルの地域でイゼベルを食うであろう』と。

And of Jezebel also spake Jehovah, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the rampart of Jezreel.

アハブに属する者は、町で死ぬ者を犬が食い、野で死ぬ者を空の鳥が食うでしょう」。

Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the birds of the heavens eat.

アハブのように主の目の前に悪を行うことに身をゆだねた者はなかった。その妻イゼベルが彼をそそのかしたのである。

(But there was none like unto Ahab, who did sell himself to do that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.

彼は主がイスラエルの人々の前から追い払われたアモリびとがしたように偶像に従って、はなはだ憎むべき事を行った。

And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all that the Amorites did, whom Jehovah cast out before the children of Israel.)

アハブはこれらの言葉を聞いた時、衣を裂き、荒布を身にまとい、食を断ち、荒布に伏し、打ちしおれて歩いた。

And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.

この時、主の言葉がテシベびとエリヤに臨んだ、

And the word of Jehovah came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

「アハブがわたしの前にへりくだっているのを見たか。彼がわたしの前にへりくだっているゆえ、わたしは彼の世には災を下さない。その子の世に災をその家に下すであろう」。

Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days; but in his son`s days will I bring the evil upon his house.

第22章

スリヤとイスラエルの間に戦争がなくて三年を経た。

And they continued three years without war between Syria and Israel.

しかし三年目にユダの王ヨシャパテがイスラエルの王の所へ下っていったので、

And it came to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel.

イスラエルの王はその家来たちに言った、「あなたがたは、ラモテ・ギレアデがわれわれの所有であることを知っていますか。しかもなおわれわれはスリヤの王の手からそれを取らずに黙っているのです」。

And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that Ramoth-gilead is ours, and we are still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?

彼はヨシャパテに言った、「ラモテ・ギレアデで戦うためにわたしと一緒に行かれませんか」。ヨシャパテはイスラエルの王に言った、「わたしはあなたと一つです。わたしの民はあなたの民と一つです。わたしの馬はあなたの馬と一つです」。

And he said unto Jehoshaphat, Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramoth-gilead? And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.

ヨシャパテはまたイスラエルの王に言った、「まず、主の言葉を伺いなさい」。

And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, Inquire first, I pray thee, for the word of Jehovah.

そこでイスラエルの王は預言者四百人ばかりを集めて、彼らに言った、「わたしはラモテ・ギレアデに戦いに行くべきでしょうか、あるいは控えるべきでしょうか」。彼らは言った、「上っていきなさい。主はそれを王の手にわたされるでしょう」。

Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall I go against Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king.

ヨシャパテは言った、「ここには、われわれの問うべき主の預言者がほかにいませんか」。

But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah besides, that we may inquire of him?

イスラエルの王はヨシャパテに言った、「われわれが主に問うことのできる人が、まだひとりいます。イムラの子ミカヤです。彼はわたしについて良い事を預言せず、ただ悪い事だけを預言するので、わたしは彼を憎んでいます」。ヨシャパテは言った、「王よ、そう言わないでください」。

And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, there is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Jehovah, Micaiah the son of Imlah: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.

そこでイスラエルの王は役人を呼んで、「急いでイムラの子ミカヤを連れてきなさい」と言った。

Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said, Fetch quickly Micaiah the son of Imlah.

さてイスラエルの王およびユダの王ヨシャパテは王の服を着て、サマリヤの門の入口の広場に、おのおのその王座にすわり、預言者たちは皆その前で預言していた。

Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting each on his throne, arrayed in their robes, in an open place at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them.

ケナアナの子ゼデキヤは鉄の角を造って言った、「主はこう仰せられます、『あなたはこれらの角をもってスリヤびとを突いて彼らを滅ぼしなさい』」。

And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, With these shalt thou push the Syrians, until they be consumed.

預言者たちは皆そのように預言して言った、「ラモテ・ギレアデに上っていって勝利を得なさい。主はそれを王の手にわたされるでしょう」。

And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramoth-gilead, and prosper; for Jehovah will deliver it into the hand of the king.

さてミカヤを呼びにいった使者は彼に言った、「預言者たちは一致して王に良い事を言いました。どうぞ、あなたも、彼らのひとりの言葉のようにして、良い事を言ってください」。

And the messenger that went to call Micaiah spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets [declare] good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak thou good.

ミカヤは言った、「主は生きておられます。主がわたしに言われる事を申しましょう」。

And Micaiah said, As Jehovah liveth, what Jehovah saith unto me, that will I speak.

彼が王の所へ行くと、王は彼に言った、「ミカヤよ、われわれはラモテ・ギレアデに戦いに行くべきでしょうか、あるいは控えるべきでしょうか」。彼は王に言った、「上っていって勝利を得なさい。主はそれを王の手にわたされるでしょう」。

And when he was come to the king, the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall we forbear? And he answered him, Go up and prosper; and Jehovah will deliver it into the hand of the king.

しかし王は彼に言った、「幾たびあなたを誓わせたら、あなたは主の名をもって、ただ真実のみをわたしに告げるでしょうか」。

And the king said unto him, How many times shall I adjure thee that thou speak unto me nothing but the truth in the name of Jehovah?

彼は言った、「わたしはイスラエルが皆、牧者のない羊のように、山に散っているのを見ました。すると主は『これらの者は飼主がいない。彼らをそれぞれ安らかに、その家に帰らせよ』と言われました」。

And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd: and Jehovah said, These have no master; let them return every man to his house in peace.

イスラエルの王はヨシャパテに言った、「彼がわたしについて良い事を預言せず、ただ悪い事だけを預言すると、あなたに告げたではありませんか」。

And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?

ミカヤは言った、「それゆえ主の言葉を聞きなさい。わたしは主がその玉座にすわり、天の万軍がそのかたわらに、右左に立っているのを見たが、

And [Micaiah] said, Therefore hear thou the word of Jehovah: I saw Jehovah sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left.

主は『だれがアハブをいざなってラモテ・ギレアデに上らせ、彼を倒れさせるであろうか』と言われました。するとひとりはこの事を言い、ひとりはほかの事を言いました。

And Jehovah said, Who shall entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner; and another said on that manner.

その時一つの霊が進み出て、主の前に立ち、『わたしが彼をいざないましょう』と言いました。

And there came forth a spirit, and stood before Jehovah, and said, I will entice him.

主は『どのような方法でするのか』と言われたので、彼は『わたしが出て行って、偽りを言う霊となって、すべての預言者の口に宿りましょう』と言いました。そこで主は『おまえは彼をいざなって、それを成し遂げるであろう。出て行って、そうしなさい』と言われました。

And Jehovah said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also: go forth, and do so.

それで主は偽りを言う霊をあなたのすべての預言者の口に入れ、また主はあなたの身に起る災を告げられたのです」。

Now therefore, behold, Jehovah hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets; and Jehovah hath spoken evil concerning thee.

するとケナアナの子ゼデキヤは近寄って、ミカヤのほおを打って言った、「どのようにして主の霊がわたしを離れて、あなたに語りましたか」。

Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of Jehovah from me to speak unto thee?

ミカヤは言った、「あなたが奥の間にはいって身を隠すその日に、わかるでしょう」。

And Micaiah said, Behold, thou shalt see on that day, when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself.

イスラエルの王は言った、「ミカヤを捕え、町のつかさアモンと、王の子ヨアシの所へ引いて帰って、

And the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah, and carry him back unto Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king`s son;

言いなさい、『王がこう言います、この者を獄屋に入れ、わずかのパンと水をもって彼を養い、わたしが勝利を得て帰ってくるのを待て』」。

and say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace.

ミカヤは言った、「もしあなたが勝利を得て帰ってこられるならば、主がわたしによって語られなかったのです」。また彼は言った、「あなたがた、すべての民よ、聞きなさい」。

And Micaiah said, If thou return at all in peace, Jehovah hath not spoken by me. And he said, Hear, ye peoples, all of you.

こうしてイスラエルの王とユダの王ヨシャパテはラモテ・ギレアデに上っていった。

So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead.

イスラエルの王はヨシャパテに言った、「わたしは姿を変えて、戦いに行きます。あなたは王の服を着けなさい」。イスラエルの王は姿を変えて戦いに行った。

And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and go into the battle; but put thou on thy robes. And the king of Israel disguised himself, and went into the battle.

さて、スリヤの王は、その戦車長三十二人に命じて言った、「あなたがたは、小さい者とも大きい者とも戦わないで、ただイスラエルの王とだけ戦いなさい」。

Now the king of Syria had commanded the thirty and two captains of his chariots, saying, Fight neither with small nor great, save only with the king of Israel.

戦車長らはヨシャパテを見たとき、これはきっとイスラエルの王だと思ったので、身をめぐらして、これと戦おうとすると、ヨシャパテは呼ばわった。

And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, Surely it is the king of Israel; and they turned aside to fight against him: and Jehoshaphat cried out.

戦車長らは彼がイスラエルの王でないのを見たので、彼を追うことをやめて引き返した。

And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, that they turned back from pursuing him.

しかし、ひとりの人が何心なく弓をひいて、イスラエルの王の胸当と草摺の間を射たので、彼はその戦車の御者に言った、「わたしは傷を受けた。戦車をめぐらして、わたしを戦場から運び出せ」。

And a certain man drew his bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the joints of the armor: wherefore he said unto the driver of his chariot, Turn thy hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am sore wounded.

その日戦いは激しくなった。王は戦車の中にささえられて立ち、スリヤびとにむかっていたが、ついに、夕暮になって死んだ。傷の血は戦車の底に流れた。

And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his chariot against the Syrians, and died at even; and the blood ran out of the wound into the bottom of the chariot.

日の没するころ、軍勢の中に呼ばわる声がした、「めいめいその町へ、めいめいその国へ帰れ」。

And there went a cry throughout the host about the going down of the sun, saying, Every man to his city, and every man to his country.

王は死んで、サマリヤへ携え行かれた。人々は王をサマリヤに葬った。

So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria.

またその戦車をサマリヤの池で洗ったが、犬がその血をなめた。また遊女がそこで身を洗った。主が言われた言葉のとおりである。

And they washed the chariot by the pool of Samaria; and the dogs licked up his blood (now the harlots washed themselves [there]); according unto the word of Jehovah which he spake.

アハブのそのほかの事績と、彼がしたすべての事と、その建てた象牙の家と、その建てたすべての町は、イスラエルの王の歴代志の書にしるされているではないか。

Now the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory house which he built, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

こうしてアハブはその先祖と共に眠って、その子アハジヤが代って王となった。

So Ahab slept with his fathers; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.

アサの子ヨシャパテはイスラエルの王アハブの第四年にユダの王となった。

And Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel.

ヨシャパテは王となった時、三十五歳であったが、エルサレムで二十五年世を治めた。その母の名はアズバといい、シルヒの娘であった。

Jehoshaphat was thirty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother`s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.

ヨシャパテは父アサのすべての道に歩み、それを離れることなく、主の目にかなう事をした。ただし高き所は除かなかったので、民はなお高き所で犠牲をささげ、香をたいた。

And he walked in all the way of Asa his father; He turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah: howbeit the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

ヨシャパテはまたイスラエルの王と、よしみを結んだ。

And Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel.

ヨシャパテのその他の事績と、彼があらわした勲功およびその戦争については、ユダの王の歴代志の書にしるされているではないか。

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, and his might that he showed, and how he warred, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

彼は父アサの世になお残っていた神殿男娼たちを国のうちから追い払った。

And the remnant of the sodomites, that remained in the days of his father Asa, he put away out of the land.

そのころエドムには王がなく、代官が王であった。

And there was no king in Edom: a deputy was king.

ヨシャパテはタルシシの船を造って、金を獲るためにオフルに行かせようとしたが、その船はエジオン・ゲベルで難破したため、ついに行かなかった。

Jehoshaphat made ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold: but they went not; for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber.

そこでアハブの子アハジヤはヨシャパテに「わたしの家来をあなたの家来と一緒に船で行かせなさい」と言ったが、ヨシャパテは承知しなかった。

Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat, Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships. But Jehoshaphat would not.

ヨシャパテはその先祖と共に眠って、父ダビデの町に先祖と共に葬られ、その子ヨラムが代って王となった。

And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father; And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

アハブの子アハジヤはユダの王ヨシャパテの第十七年にサマリヤでイスラエルの王となり、二年イスラエルを治めた。

Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned two years over Israel.

彼は主の目の前に悪を行い、その父の道と、その母の道、およびかのイスラエルに罪を犯させたネバテの子ヤラベアムの道に歩み、

And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherein he made Israel to sin.

バアルに仕えて、それを拝み、イスラエルの神、主を怒らせた。すべて彼の父がしたとおりであった。

And he served Baal, and worshipped him, and provoked to anger Jehovah, the God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.
