インテリジェント・デザインは、Wheel of Heaven の文脈において、地球生命(人類を含む)は純粋に自発的な発生によるのではなく、技術的に先進的な外部の文明によって合成された、とする主張を指す。この用語は、それを標語に転用した北米の宗教的創造論諸潮流の用法とは区別される。

Intelligent Design (ID) is, in the broad sense, the claim that the functional organization of living things — the way biological parts fit together toward a working whole — is better explained by an intelligent designer than by wholly undirected natural processes. In the narrow and more familiar sense, the term names a specific American movement that built this claim into a structured set of arguments, developed from the early 1990s onward by the Discovery Institute and figures such as Phillip Johnson, Michael Behe, William Dembski, and Stephen Meyer. That movement's arguments were tested in court and rejected as non-science in the 2005 Kitzmiller v. Dover ruling.

The phrase carries a second, easily missed meaning here. The Raëlian source material — Le Livre qui dit la vérité (1974) and its sequels — was collected in English under the title Intelligent Design: Message from the Designers, and the Wheel of Heaven framework uses the words in that sense: life on Earth was intelligently designed, by the Elohim. The framework therefore agrees with the bare design claim while standing well apart from the American ID movement. The difference is the designer. For the movement, the designer is left publicly unnamed but functions, on its own strategy documents, as the Abrahamic God — a supernatural being beyond investigation. For the framework, the designer is physical: a biological civilization that engineered terrestrial life with tools continuous with the genetic engineering our own biology is now developing. That places the framework's reading closer to a serious if minority scientific hypothesis — Francis Crick and Leslie Orgel's 1973 directed panspermia — than to theistic ID.

This entry keeps the three apart: the design argument and the movement that carries its name today; the framework's own physical-designer claim; and the verdict of mainstream science, which rejects ID as science and which the framework does not dispute on its own terms.

The design argument before the movement

The inference from complex, well-fitted structure to a designing mind is old. Aristotle's natural philosophy already reasoned from the purposive organization of living things, and Thomas Aquinas made a version of the argument the fifth of his five ways of demonstrating God's existence (c. 1265–1274). Its most influential statement is William Paley's Natural Theology (1802) and its watchmaker analogy: a watch found on a heath, unlike a stone, so plainly shows contrivance toward a purpose that one must infer a watchmaker — and, Paley argued, every organ of every living thing shows the same contrivance to a far greater degree. For a generation of English naturalists this was simply how biological complexity was understood.

Two developments unsettled it. David Hume's Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (published 1779) had already pressed the argument hard through the character Philo: the analogy between organism and artifact is weaker than it looks; even granting a designer, the argument establishes little about the designer's nature — it might be limited, plural, or unlike the God of tradition; and the designer, if itself complex, would seem to need a designer in turn, opening a regress. Then in 1859 Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species supplied a mechanism — undirected variation filtered by differential survival — by which the appearance of design could arise without a designer. The design argument did not vanish, but after Darwin it could no longer rest on the bare claim that complexity requires design; it had to show why particular biological features could not have evolved. That demand is what gave the modern movement its shape.

The Intelligent Design movement

The movement that now owns the phrase "Intelligent Design" is a distinct historical thing, and it is worth separating carefully from both the older design argument and the framework's reading.

Its immediate origin is legal. In 1987 the U.S. Supreme Court, in Edwards v. Aguillard, ruled that teaching "creation science" in public schools violated the Establishment Clause of the Constitution. The decision closed the door on explicit creationism in the science classroom, and Intelligent Design emerged in its place. The transition left a documentary fingerprint: drafts of the textbook Of Pandas and People (1989) were revised, after Edwards, to swap "creationist" for "design proponent" throughout — one botched edit produced the hybrid word "cdesign proponentsists," later cited in court as evidence that ID was creationism relabeled.

The movement's institutional center is the Discovery Institute, a Seattle think tank founded in 1991, and its Center for Science and Culture (1996). An internal strategy memo leaked in 1999, the Wedge Document, stated the aim plainly: to "defeat scientific materialism" and to replace it with "the theistic understanding that nature and human beings are created by God." However the movement described its designer in public — deliberately unnamed, to preserve a claim to neutrality — its own strategy identified that designer with God. This is the decisive point of contrast with the Wheel of Heaven reading, whose designer is physical rather than divine.

Its principal figures and arguments are well defined. Phillip Johnson's Darwin on Trial (1991) set the movement's agenda. Michael Behe's Darwin's Black Box (1996) introduced irreducible complexity — the claim that systems such as the bacterial flagellum, needing all their parts at once to function, could not have been assembled in selectable steps. William Dembski's The Design Inference (1998) offered specified complexity, a proposed statistical filter for telling design from chance. Stephen Meyer's Signature in the Cell (2009) argued that the information carried in DNA is best explained by a mind. Alongside these runs the older fine-tuning argument, that the physical constants of the universe are improbably well-suited to life.

Mainstream biology has answered each in turn — irreducible complexity by the co-option of parts that first served other functions (the flagellum's components have homologues in the bacterial secretion system), specified complexity by disputing how its probabilities are even to be computed, the information argument by the ongoing, unfinished science of life's origins. Whatever one makes of the replies, the framework's stake in these particular arguments is limited: it does not need the strong claim that all biological complexity resists an evolutionary account. Its claim is narrower, and about specific engineering events; it is developed on its own grounds below.

The Wheel of Heaven reading

The framework agrees with the design argument's core intuition — that the functional complexity of terrestrial life, and of humanity above all, is the work of intelligence rather than of undirected chemistry — and then parts from the ID movement on almost everything else.

On the reading developed from the Raëlian source material, life on Earth did not assemble itself from unguided chemistry. It was designed and synthesized by the Elohim, an advanced civilization from a world outside the solar system, who built terrestrial plants, animals, and finally humanity in laboratories and released them into a prepared biosphere. The Genesis creation account is read as a compressed record of that work — the "days" as ordered phases of engineering, the making of humanity "in our image" as the deliberate modeling of a species on its makers — and Eden as the enclosed laboratory where the first human lineage was made. These are foundational claims of the framework, stated here as the corpus states them and not endorsed by mainstream science.

What separates this from the ID movement is not the design inference but the designer. Three differences carry the weight.

The designer is physical. The Elohim are not a metaphysical or supernatural cause but biological beings with a technology some tens of thousands of years ahead of ours. Their work is, in principle, the kind of thing that could leave traces — in the genome, in the archaeological record — and so an object of investigation rather than an article of faith. The ID movement's designer, identified in its own documents with God, is by definition beyond such investigation. On this axis the framework sits closer to ordinary science than the movement does: its designer belongs to the same natural order as genetic engineering and astrobiology.

It is not anti-evolutionary. The framework does not deny natural selection or reject the deep-time history of life. It reads the Elohim as having engineered particular organisms — humanity above all — on top of a biosphere that itself involved evolutionary processes, not as having conjured every species from nothing. Its one sharp divergence from mainstream biology is narrow and datable: it places the synthesis of anatomically modern humans at roughly 13,000 years ago, against the mainstream figure of some 200,000 years, and it treats that tension openly as an unresolved question rather than smoothing it over. It carries no political-religious program. The ID movement is embedded in American religious politics; the framework is not. It reaches instead for its scientific cognate. In 1973 Francis Crick — co-discoverer of the structure of DNA — and Leslie Orgel proposed, in a peer-reviewed paper, that life on Earth might have been deliberately seeded by an extraterrestrial civilization: directed panspermia. Crick and Orgel left the seeding civilization abstract. The framework supplies what they left blank — the makers, the method, and a claimed contact history — while conceding, as they did, that the idea is not demonstrated. The convergence in vocabulary is real and worth stating precisely: two of the leading molecular biologists of the century entertained the general shape of the claim, even as science rejects the framework's particular account. The point is developed in the astrobiology and genetic engineering entries.

The framework also answers Hume's old regress in a way traditional design arguments cannot. Where classical ID halts the regress by positing a first, uncreated designer — God — the corpus lets it run. The Elohim were themselves engineered by an earlier civilization, which was engineered by an earlier one, along the Cosmic Chain of makers and Forerunners that reaches back beyond any first link the source material claims to know (the point is pressed in the Infinity and cosmic pluralism entries). Design, on this reading, is not the signature of a unique supreme intelligence but the ordinary work of civilizations that reach maturity — including, before long, our own. The framework reads today's genetic engineering, synthetic biology, and synthetic genomics as humanity beginning to recover the designer's craft: a marker of the Apocalypse-age transition, and preparation for the Great Return.

Mainstream science and the Kitzmiller ruling

Two verdicts have to be kept apart, because the framework accepts both.

The first is mainstream science's verdict on the ID movement, which is settled: ID is not science. The National Academy of Sciences (2008) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2002) have both said as much, and the reasons are specific. ID generates no testable predictions; its design inference is drawn after the fact rather than used to predict anything. Its signature arguments have been answered within evolutionary biology. It has produced no sustained peer-reviewed research program in the decades since Darwin on Trial. And its own history — the Wedge Document, the Pandas editing trail — makes its claim to religious neutrality hard to credit.

Those threads were pulled together in court. In Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District (2005), eleven parents challenged a Pennsylvania school board that had required biology teachers to present ID as an alternative to evolution. Judge John E. Jones III — a conservative appointee — heard six weeks of testimony and issued a 139-page ruling that ID is not science, that it is "creationism relabeled" rather than an independent scientific position, and that teaching it in public-school science classes violates the Establishment Clause. The decision did not dissolve the movement, but it ended its bid for the classroom.

The framework does not contest any of this, and it takes care not to smuggle its own claim in under the movement's. The distance it keeps from theistic ID does not exempt its own reading from scrutiny. The standing objection to directed panspermia in every form applies to the framework too: naming a prior civilization does not solve the origin-of-life problem but relocates it, adding an unobserved civilization without shrinking the mystery. There is no independent physical evidence — no laboratory signature, no artifact, no confirmed contact — for an engineered origin of terrestrial life, and Carl Sagan's rule that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence applies with full force. The corpus rests its case on a reading of ancient texts and a contact narrative that science does not accept as data, and it says so plainly.

What it claims is narrower, and worth holding onto. Science has itself raised the possibility of deliberate design — tentatively, in Crick and Orgel — and the framework states its own commitments openly, keeping the line visible between what the canon asserts and what has been demonstrated. Mainstream science and the framework agree that the origin and design of life is a real and unsettled question, among the most consequential a civilization can ask. They differ on whether it has already been answered — and on whether the answer is written in the genome or in the texts.
