Aphorisms on wisdom, folly, and the conduct of life

A compendium of practical wisdom in the form of short sayings and longer instructional discourses. Its opening chapters personify Wisdom as a woman calling out in the streets; later sections collect proverbs traditionally attributed to Solomon and to other sages.

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

чтобы познать мудрость и наставление, понять изречения разума;

To know wisdom and instruction; To discern the words of understanding;

усвоить правила благоразумия, правосудия, суда и правоты;

To receive instruction in wise dealing, In righteousness and justice and equity;

простым дать смышленость, юноше – знание и рассудительность;

To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion:

послушает мудрый – и умножит познания, и разумный найдет мудрые советы;

That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; And that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels:

чтобы разуметь притчу и замысловатую речь, слова мудрецов и загадки их.

To understand a proverb, and a figure, The words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

Начало мудрости – страх Господень; глупцы только презирают мудрость и наставление.

The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; [But] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

Слушай, сын мой, наставление отца твоего и не отвергай завета матери твоей,

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:

потому что это – прекрасный венок для головы твоей и украшение для шеи твоей.

For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck.

Сын мой! если будут склонять тебя грешники, не соглашайся;

My son, if sinners entice thee, Consent thou not.

если будут говорить: "иди с нами, сделаем засаду для убийства, подстережем непорочного без вины,

If they say, Come with us, Let us lay wait for blood; Let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause;

живых проглотим их, как преисподняя, и – целых, как нисходящих в могилу;

Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, And whole, as those that go down into the pit;

наберем всякого драгоценного имущества, наполним домы наши добычею;

We shall find all precious substance; We shall fill our houses with spoil;

жребий твой ты будешь бросать вместе с нами, склад один будет у всех нас", –

Thou shalt cast thy lot among us; We will all have one purse:

сын мой! не ходи в путь с ними, удержи ногу твою от стези их,

My son, walk not thou in the way with them; Refrain thy foot from their path:

потому что ноги их бегут ко злу и спешат на пролитие крови.

For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood.

В глазах всех птиц напрасно расставляется сеть,

For in vain is the net spread In the sight of any bird:

а делают засаду для их крови и подстерегают их души.

And these lay wait for their own blood; They lurk privily for their own lives.

Таковы пути всякого, кто алчет чужого добра: оно отнимает жизнь у завладевшего им.

So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; It taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

Премудрость возглашает на улице, на площадях возвышает голос свой,

Wisdom crieth aloud in the street; She uttereth her voice in the broad places;

в главных местах собраний проповедует, при входах в городские ворота говорит речь свою:

She crieth in the chief place of concourse; At the entrance of the gates, In the city, she uttereth her words:

"доколе, невежды, будете любить невежество? [доколе] буйные будут услаждаться буйством? доколе глупцы будут ненавидеть знание?

How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And scoffers delight them in scoffing, And fools hate knowledge?

Обратитесь к моему обличению: вот, я изолью на вас дух мой, возвещу вам слова мои.

Turn you at my reproof: Behold, I will pour out my spirit upon you; I will make known my words unto you.

Я звала, и вы не послушались; простирала руку мою, и не было внимающего;

Because I have called, and ye have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man hath regarded;

и вы отвергли все мои советы, и обличений моих не приняли.

But ye have set at nought all my counsel, And would none of my reproof:

За то и я посмеюсь вашей погибели; порадуюсь, когда придет на вас ужас;

I also will laugh in [the day of] your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

когда придет на вас ужас, как буря, и беда, как вихрь, принесется на вас; когда постигнет вас скорбь и теснота.

When your fear cometh as a storm, And your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; When distress and anguish come upon you.

Тогда будут звать меня, и я не услышу; с утра будут искать меня, и не найдут меня.

Then will they call upon me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they shall not find me:

За то, что они возненавидели знание и не избрали [для себя] страха Господня,

For that they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of Jehovah:

не приняли совета моего, презрели все обличения мои;

They would none of my counsel; They despised all my reproof.

за то и будут они вкушать от плодов путей своих и насыщаться от помыслов их.

Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own devices.

Потому что упорство невежд убьет их, и беспечность глупцов погубит их,

For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, And the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

а слушающий меня будет жить безопасно и спокойно, не страшась зла".

But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, And shall be quiet without fear of evil.

Глава 2

Сын мой! если ты примешь слова мои и сохранишь при себе заповеди мои,

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, And lay up my commandments with thee;

так что ухо твое сделаешь внимательным к мудрости и наклонишь сердце твое к размышлению;

So as to incline thine ear unto wisdom, And apply thy heart to understanding;

если будешь призывать знание и взывать к разуму;

Yea, if thou cry after discernment, And lift up thy voice for understanding;

если будешь искать его, как серебра, и отыскивать его, как сокровище,

If thou seek her as silver, And search for her as for hid treasures:

то уразумеешь страх Господень и найдешь познание о Боге.

Then shalt thou understand the fear of Jehovah, And find the knowledge of God.

Ибо Господь дает мудрость; из уст Его – знание и разум;

For Jehovah giveth wisdom; Out of his mouth [cometh] knowledge and understanding:

Он сохраняет для праведных спасение; Он – щит для ходящих непорочно;

He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright; [He is] a shield to them that walk in integrity;

Он охраняет пути правды и оберегает стезю святых Своих.

That he may guard the paths of justice, And preserve the way of his saints.

Тогда ты уразумеешь правду и правосудие и прямоту, всякую добрую стезю.

Then shalt thou understand righteousness and justice, And equity, [yea], every good path.

Когда мудрость войдет в сердце твое, и знание будет приятно душе твоей,

For wisdom shall enter into thy heart, And knowledge shall be pleasant unto thy soul;

тогда рассудительность будет оберегать тебя, разум будет охранять тебя,

Discretion shall watch over thee; Understanding shall keep thee:

дабы спасти тебя от пути злого, от человека, говорящего ложь,

To deliver thee from the way of evil, From the men that speak perverse things;

от тех, которые оставляют стези прямые, чтобы ходить путями тьмы;

Who forsake the paths of uprightness, To walk in the ways of darkness;

от тех, которые радуются, делая зло, восхищаются злым развратом,

Who rejoice to do evil, And delight in the perverseness of evil;

которых пути кривы, и которые блуждают на стезях своих;

Who are crooked in their ways, And wayward in their paths:

дабы спасти тебя от жены другого, от чужой, которая умягчает речи свои,

To deliver thee from the strange woman, Even from the foreigner that flattereth with her words;

которая оставила руководителя юности своей и забыла завет Бога своего.

That forsaketh the friend of her youth, And forgetteth the covenant of her God:

Дом ее ведет к смерти, и стези ее – к мертвецам;

For her house inclineth unto death, And her paths unto the dead;

никто из вошедших к ней не возвращается и не вступает на путь жизни.

None that go unto her return again, Neither do they attain unto the paths of life:

Посему ходи путем добрых и держись стезей праведников,

That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, And keep the paths of the righteous.

потому что праведные будут жить на земле, и непорочные пребудут на ней;

For the upright shall dwell in the land, And the perfect shall remain in it.

а беззаконные будут истреблены с земли, и вероломные искоренены из нее.

But the wicked shall be cut off from the land, And the treacherous shall be rooted out of it.

Глава 3

Сын мой! наставления моего не забывай, и заповеди мои да хранит сердце твое;

My son, forget not my law; But let thy heart keep my commandments:

ибо долготы дней, лет жизни и мира они приложат тебе.

For length of days, and years of life, And peace, will they add to thee.

Милость и истина да не оставляют тебя: обвяжи ими шею твою, напиши их на скрижали сердца твоего,

Let not kindness and truth forsake thee: Bind them about thy neck; Write them upon the tablet of thy heart:

и обретешь милость и благоволение в очах Бога и людей.

So shalt thou find favor and good understanding In the sight of God and man.

Надейся на Господа всем сердцем твоим, и не полагайся на разум твой.

Trust in Jehovah with all thy heart, And lean not upon thine own understanding:

Во всех путях твоих познавай Его, и Он направит стези твои.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he will direct thy paths.

Не будь мудрецом в глазах твоих; бойся Господа и удаляйся от зла:

Be not wise in thine own eyes; Fear Jehovah, and depart from evil:

это будет здравием для тела твоего и питанием для костей твоих.

It will be health to thy navel, And marrow to thy bones.

Чти Господа от имения твоего и от начатков всех прибытков твоих,

Honor Jehovah with thy substance, And with the first-fruits of all thine increase:

и наполнятся житницы твои до избытка, и точила твои будут переливаться новым вином.

So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, And thy vats shall overflow with new wine.

Наказания Господня, сын мой, не отвергай, и не тяготись обличением Его;

My son, despise not the chastening of Jehovah; Neither be weary of his reproof:

ибо кого любит Господь, того наказывает и благоволит к тому, как отец к сыну своему.

For whom Jehovah loveth he reproveth; Even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Блажен человек, который снискал мудрость, и человек, который приобрел разум, –

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, And the man that getteth understanding.

потому что приобретение ее лучше приобретения серебра, и прибыли от нее больше, нежели от золота:

For the gaining of it is better than the gaining of silver, And the profit thereof than fine gold.

она дороже драгоценных камней; и ничто из желаемого тобою не сравнится с нею.

She is more precious than rubies: And none of the things thou canst desire are to be compared unto her.

Долгоденствие – в правой руке ее, а в левой у нее – богатство и слава;

Length of days is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor.

пути ее – пути приятные, и все стези ее – мирные.

Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace.

Она – древо жизни для тех, которые приобретают ее, – и блаженны, которые сохраняют ее!

She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: And happy is every one that retaineth her.

Господь премудростью основал землю, небеса утвердил разумом;

Jehovah by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding he established the heavens.

Его премудростью разверзлись бездны, и облака кропят росою.

By his knowledge the depths were broken up, And the skies drop down the dew.

Сын мой! не упускай их из глаз твоих; храни здравомыслие и рассудительность,

My son, let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep sound wisdom and discretion:

и они будут жизнью для души твоей и украшением для шеи твоей.

So shall they be life unto thy soul, And grace to thy neck.

Тогда безопасно пойдешь по пути твоему, и нога твоя не споткнется.

Then shalt thou walk in thy way securely, And thy foot shall not stumble.

Когда ляжешь спать, – не будешь бояться; и когда уснешь, – сон твой приятен будет.

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: Yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

Не убоишься внезапного страха и пагубы от нечестивых, когда она придет;

Be not afraid of sudden fear, Neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh:

потому что Господь будет упованием твоим и сохранит ногу твою от уловления.

For Jehovah will be thy confidence, And will keep thy foot from being taken.

Не отказывай в благодеянии нуждающемуся, когда рука твоя в силе сделать его.

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, When it is in the power of thy hand to do it.

Не говори другу твоему: "пойди и приди опять, и завтра я дам", когда ты имеешь при себе.

Say not unto thy neighbor, Go, and come again, And to-morrow I will give; When thou hast it by thee.

Не замышляй против ближнего твоего зла, когда он без опасения живет с тобою.

Devise not evil against thy neighbor, Seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

Не ссорься с человеком без причины, когда он не сделал зла тебе.

Strive not with a man without cause, If he have done thee no harm.

Не соревнуй человеку, поступающему насильственно, и не избирай ни одного из путей его;

Envy thou not the man of violence, And choose none of his ways.

потому что мерзость пред Господом развратный, а с праведными у Него общение.

For the perverse is an abomination to Jehovah; But his friendship is with the upright.

Проклятие Господне на доме нечестивого, а жилище благочестивых Он благословляет.

The curse of Jehovah is in the house of the wicked; But he blesseth the habitation of the righteous.

Если над кощунниками Он посмевается, то смиренным дает благодать.

Surely he scoffeth at the scoffers; But he giveth grace unto the lowly.

Мудрые наследуют славу, а глупые – бесславие.

The wise shall inherit glory; But shame shall be the promotion of fools.

Глава 4

Слушайте, дети, наставление отца, и внимайте, чтобы научиться разуму,

Hear, [my] sons, the instruction of a father, And attend to know understanding:

потому что я преподал вам доброе учение. Не оставляйте заповеди моей.

For I give you good doctrine; Forsake ye not my law.

Ибо и я был сын у отца моего, нежно любимый и единственный у матери моей,

For I was a son unto my father, Tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.

и он учил меня и говорил мне: да удержит сердце твое слова мои; храни заповеди мои, и живи.

And he taught me, and said unto me: Let thy heart retain my words; Keep my commandments, and live;

Приобретай мудрость, приобретай разум: не забывай этого и не уклоняйся от слов уст моих.

Get wisdom, get understanding; Forget not, neither decline from the words of my mouth;

Не оставляй ее, и она будет охранять тебя; люби ее, и она будет оберегать тебя.

Forsake her not, and she will preserve thee; Love her, and she will keep thee.

Главное – мудрость: приобретай мудрость, и всем имением твоим приобретай разум.

Wisdom [is] the principal thing; [therefore] get wisdom; Yea, with all thy getting get understanding.

Высоко цени ее, и она возвысит тебя; она прославит тебя, если ты прилепишься к ней;

Exalt her, and she will promote thee; She will bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her.

возложит на голову твою прекрасный венок, доставит тебе великолепный венец.

She will give to thy head a chaplet of grace; A crown of beauty will she deliver to thee.

Слушай, сын мой, и прими слова мои, – и умножатся тебе лета жизни.

Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; And the years of thy life shall be many.

Я указываю тебе путь мудрости, веду тебя по стезям прямым.

I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in paths of uprightness.

Когда пойдешь, не будет стеснен ход твой, и когда побежишь, не споткнешься.

When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; And if thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

Крепко держись наставления, не оставляй, храни его, потому что оно – жизнь твоя.

Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: Keep her; for she is thy life.

Не вступай на стезю нечестивых и не ходи по пути злых;

Enter not into the path of the wicked, And walk not in the way of evil men.

оставь его, не ходи по нему, уклонись от него и пройди мимо;

Avoid it, pass not by it; Turn from it, and pass on.

потому что они не заснут, если не сделают зла; пропадает сон у них, если они не доведут кого до падения;

For they sleep not, except they do evil; And their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

ибо они едят хлеб беззакония и пьют вино хищения.

For they eat the bread of wickedness, And drink the wine of violence.

Стезя праведных – как светило лучезарное, которое более и более светлеет до полного дня.

But the path of the righteous is as the dawning light, That shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

Путь же беззаконных – как тьма; они не знают, обо что споткнутся.

The way of the wicked is as darkness: They know not at what they stumble.

Сын мой! словам моим внимай, и к речам моим приклони ухо твое;

My son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear unto my sayings.

да не отходят они от глаз твоих; храни их внутри сердца твоего:

Let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep them in the midst of thy heart.

потому что они жизнь для того, кто нашел их, и здравие для всего тела его.

For they are life unto those that find them, And health to all their flesh.

Больше всего хранимого храни сердце твое, потому что из него источники жизни.

Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life.

Отвергни от себя лживость уст, и лукавство языка удали от себя.

Put away from thee a wayward mouth, And perverse lips put far from thee.

Глаза твои пусть прямо смотрят, и ресницы твои да направлены будут прямо пред тобою.

Let thine eyes look right on, And let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

Обдумай стезю для ноги твоей, и все пути твои да будут тверды.

Make level the path of thy feet, And let all thy ways be established.

Не уклоняйся ни направо, ни налево; удали ногу твою от зла,

Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: Remove thy foot from evil.

Глава 5

Сын мой! внимай мудрости моей, и приклони ухо твое к разуму моему,

My son, attend unto my wisdom; Incline thine ear to my understanding:

чтобы соблюсти рассудительность, и чтобы уста твои сохранили знание.

That thou mayest preserve discretion, And that thy lips may keep knowledge.

ибо мед источают уста чужой жены, и мягче елея речь ее;

For the lips of a strange woman drop honey, And her mouth is smoother than oil:

но последствия от нее горьки, как полынь, остры, как меч обоюдоострый;

But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword.

ноги ее нисходят к смерти, стопы ее достигают преисподней.

Her feet go down to death; Her steps take hold on Sheol;

Если бы ты захотел постигнуть стезю жизни ее, то пути ее непостоянны, и ты не узнаешь их.

So that she findeth not the level path of life: Her ways are unstable, [and] she knoweth [it] not.

Итак, дети, слушайте меня и не отступайте от слов уст моих.

Now therefore, [my] sons, hearken unto me, And depart not from the words of my mouth.

Держи дальше от нее путь твой и не подходи близко к дверям дома ее,

Remove thy way far from her, And come not nigh the door of her house;

чтобы здоровья твоего не отдать другим и лет твоих мучителю;

Lest thou give thine honor unto others, And thy years unto the cruel;

чтобы не насыщались силою твоею чужие, и труды твои не были для чужого дома.

Lest strangers be filled with thy strength, And thy labors [be] in the house of an alien,

И ты будешь стонать после, когда плоть твоя и тело твое будут истощены, –

And thou mourn at thy latter end, When thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

и скажешь: "зачем я ненавидел наставление, и сердце мое пренебрегало обличением,

And say, How have I hated instruction, And my heart despised reproof;

и я не слушал голоса учителей моих, не приклонял уха моего к наставникам моим:

Neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers, Nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

едва не впал я во всякое зло среди собрания и общества!"

I was well-nigh in all evil In the midst of the assembly and congregation.

Пей воду из твоего водоема и текущую из твоего колодезя.

Drink waters out of thine own cistern, And running waters out of thine own well.

Пусть [не] разливаются источники твои по улице, потоки вод – по площадям;

Should thy springs be dispersed abroad, And streams of water in the streets?

пусть они будут принадлежать тебе одному, а не чужим с тобою.

Let them be for thyself alone, And not for strangers with thee.

Источник твой да будет благословен; и утешайся женою юности твоей,

Let thy fountain be blessed; And rejoice in the wife of thy youth.

любезною ланью и прекрасною серною: груди ее да упоявают тебя во всякое время, любовью ее услаждайся постоянно.

[As] a loving hind and a pleasant doe, Let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; And be thou ravished always with her love.

И для чего тебе, сын мой, увлекаться постороннею и обнимать груди чужой?

For why shouldest thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, And embrace the bosom of a foreigner?

Ибо пред очами Господа пути человека, и Он измеряет все стези его.

For the ways of man are before the eyes of Jehovah; And he maketh level all his paths.

Беззаконного уловляют собственные беззакония его, и в узах греха своего он содержится:

His own iniquities shall take the wicked, And he shall be holden with the cords of his sin.

он умирает без наставления, и от множества безумия своего теряется.

He shall die for lack of instruction; And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

Глава 6

Сын мой! если ты поручился за ближнего твоего и дал руку твою за другого, –

My son, if thou art become surety for thy neighbor, If thou hast stricken thy hands for a stranger;

ты опутал себя словами уст твоих, пойман словами уст твоих.

Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, Thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

Сделай же, сын мой, вот что, и избавь себя, так как ты попался в руки ближнего твоего: пойди, пади к ногам и умоляй ближнего твоего;

Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, Seeing thou art come into the hand of thy neighbor: Go, humble thyself, and importune thy neighbor;

не давай сна глазам твоим и дремания веждам твоим;

Give not sleep to thine eyes, Nor slumber to thine eyelids;

спасайся, как серна из руки и как птица из руки птицелова.

Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand [of the hunter], And as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

Пойди к муравью, ленивец, посмотри на действия его, и будь мудрым.

Go to the ant, thou sluggard; Consider her ways, and be wise:

Нет у него ни начальника, ни приставника, ни повелителя;

Which having no chief, Overseer, or ruler,

но он заготовляет летом хлеб свой, собирает во время жатвы пищу свою.

Provideth her bread in the summer, And gathereth her food in the harvest.

Доколе ты, ленивец, будешь спать? когда ты встанешь от сна твоего?

How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

Немного поспишь, немного подремлешь, немного, сложив руки, полежишь:

[Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep:

и придет, как прохожий, бедность твоя, и нужда твоя, как разбойник.

So shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man.

Человек лукавый, человек нечестивый ходит со лживыми устами,

A worthless person, a man of iniquity, Is he that walketh with a perverse mouth;

мигает глазами своими, говорит ногами своими, дает знаки пальцами своими;

That winketh with his eyes, that speaketh with his feet, That maketh signs with his fingers;

коварство в сердце его: он умышляет зло во всякое время, сеет раздоры.

In whose heart is perverseness, Who deviseth evil continually, Who soweth discord.

Зато внезапно придет погибель его, вдруг будет разбит – без исцеления.

Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; On a sudden shall he be broken, and that without remedy.

Вот шесть, что ненавидит Господь, даже семь, что мерзость душе Его:

There are six things which Jehovah hateth; Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him:

глаза гордые, язык лживый и руки, проливающие кровь невинную,

Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood;

сердце, кующее злые замыслы, ноги, быстро бегущие к злодейству,

A heart that deviseth wicked purposes, Feet that are swift in running to mischief,

лжесвидетель, наговаривающий ложь и сеющий раздор между братьями.

A false witness that uttereth lies, And he that soweth discord among brethren.

Сын мой! храни заповедь отца твоего и не отвергай наставления матери твоей;

My son, keep the commandment of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:

навяжи их навсегда на сердце твое, обвяжи ими шею твою.

Bind them continually upon thy heart; Tie them about thy neck.

Когда ты пойдешь, они будут руководить тебя; когда ляжешь спать, будут охранять тебя; когда пробудишься, будут беседовать с тобою:

When thou walkest, it shall lead thee; When thou sleepest, it shall watch over thee; And when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

ибо заповедь есть светильник, и наставление – свет, и назидательные поучения – путь к жизни,

For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; And reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

чтобы остерегать тебя от негодной женщины, от льстивого языка чужой.

To keep thee from the evil woman, From the flattery of the foreigner`s tongue.

Не пожелай красоты ее в сердце твоем, и да не увлечет она тебя ресницами своими;

Lust not after her beauty in thy heart; Neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

потому что из–за жены блудной [обнищевают] до куска хлеба, а замужняя жена уловляет дорогую душу.

For on account of a harlot [a man is brought] to a piece of bread; And the adulteress hunteth for the precious life.

Can a man take fire in his bosom, And his clothes not be burned?

Может ли кто ходить по горящим угольям, чтобы не обжечь ног своих?

Or can one walk upon hot coals, And his feet not be scorched?

То же бывает и с тем, кто входит к жене ближнего своего: кто прикоснется к ней, не останется без вины.

So he that goeth in to his neighbor`s wife; Whosoever toucheth her shall not be unpunished.

Не спускают вору, если он крадет, чтобы насытить душу свою, когда он голоден;

Men do not despise a thief, if he steal To satisfy himself when he is hungry:

но, будучи пойман, он заплатит всемеро, отдаст все имущество дома своего.

But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; He shall give all the substance of his house.

Кто же прелюбодействует с женщиною, у того нет ума; тот губит душу свою, кто делает это:

He that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: He doeth it who would destroy his own soul.

побои и позор найдет он, и бесчестие его не изгладится,

Wounds and dishonor shall he get; And his reproach shall not be wiped away.

потому что ревность – ярость мужа, и не пощадит он в день мщения,

For jealousy is the rage of a man; And he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

не примет никакого выкупа и не удовольствуется, сколько бы ты ни умножал даров.

He will not regard any ransom; Neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

Глава 7

Сын мой! храни слова мои и заповеди мои сокрой у себя.

My son, keep my words, And lay up my commandments with thee.

Храни заповеди мои и живи, и учение мое, как зрачок глаз твоих.

Keep my commandments and live; And my law as the apple of thine eye.

Навяжи их на персты твои, напиши их на скрижали сердца твоего.

Bind them upon thy fingers; Write them upon the tablet of thy heart.

Скажи мудрости: "Ты сестра моя!" и разум назови родным твоим,

Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; And call understanding [thy] kinswoman:

чтобы они охраняли тебя от жены другого, от чужой, которая умягчает слова свои.

That they may keep thee from the strange woman, From the foreigner that flattereth with her words.

Вот, однажды смотрел я в окно дома моего, сквозь решетку мою,

For at the window of my house I looked forth through my lattice;

и увидел среди неопытных, заметил между молодыми людьми неразумного юношу,

And I beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, A young man void of understanding,

переходившего площадь близ угла ее и шедшего по дороге к дому ее,

Passing through the street near her corner; And he went the way to her house,

в сумерки в вечер дня, в ночной темноте и во мраке.

In the twilight, in the evening of the day, In the middle of the night and in the darkness.

И вот – навстречу к нему женщина, в наряде блудницы, с коварным сердцем,

And, behold, there met him a woman With the attire of a harlot, and wily of heart.

шумливая и необузданная; ноги ее не живут в доме ее:

She is clamorous and wilful; Her feet abide not in her house:

то на улице, то на площадях, и у каждого угла строит она ковы.

Now she is in the streets, now in the broad places, And lieth in wait at every corner.

Она схватила его, целовала его, и с бесстыдным лицом говорила ему:

So she caught him, and kissed him, [And] with an impudent face she said unto him:

"мирная жертва у меня: сегодня я совершила обеты мои;

Sacrifices of peace-offerings are with me; This day have I paid my vows.

поэтому и вышла навстречу тебе, чтобы отыскать тебя, и – нашла тебя;

Therefore came I forth to meet thee, Diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.

коврами я убрала постель мою, разноцветными тканями Египетскими;

I have spread my couch with carpets of tapestry, With striped cloths of the yarn of Egypt.

спальню мою надушила смирною, алоем и корицею;

I have perfumed my bed With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

зайди, будем упиваться нежностями до утра, насладимся любовью,

Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning; Let us solace ourselves with loves.

потому что мужа нет дома: он отправился в дальнюю дорогу;

For the man is not at home; He is gone a long journey:

кошелек серебра взял с собою; придет домой ко дню полнолуния".

He hath taken a bag of money with him; He will come home at the full moon.

Множеством ласковых слов она увлекла его, мягкостью уст своих овладела им.

With her much fair speech she causeth him to yield; With the flattering of her lips she forceth him along.

Тотчас он пошел за нею, как вол идет на убой, и как олень – на выстрел,

He goeth after her straightway, As an ox goeth to the slaughter, Or as [one in] fetters to the correction of the fool;

доколе стрела не пронзит печени его; как птичка кидается в силки, и не знает, что они – на погибель ее.

Till an arrow strike through his liver; As a bird hasteth to the snare, And knoweth not that it is for his life.

Итак, дети, слушайте меня и внимайте словам уст моих.

Now therefore, [my] sons, hearken unto me, And attend to the words of my mouth.

Да не уклоняется сердце твое на пути ее, не блуждай по стезям ее,

Let not thy heart decline to her ways; Go not astray in her paths.

потому что многих повергла она ранеными, и много сильных убиты ею:

For she hath cast down many wounded: Yea, all her slain are a mighty host.

дом ее – пути в преисподнюю, нисходящие во внутренние жилища смерти.

Her house is the way to Sheol, Going down to the chambers of death.

Глава 8

Не премудрость ли взывает? и не разум ли возвышает голос свой?

Doth not wisdom cry, And understanding put forth her voice?

Она становится на возвышенных местах, при дороге, на распутиях;

On the top of high places by the way, Where the paths meet, she standeth;

она взывает у ворот при входе в город, при входе в двери:

Beside the gates, at the entry of the city, At the coming in at the doors, she crieth aloud:

"к вам, люди, взываю я, и к сынам человеческим голос мой!

Unto you, O men, I call; And my voice is to the sons of men.

Научитесь, неразумные, благоразумию, и глупые – разуму.

O ye simple, understand prudence; And, ye fools, be of an understanding heart.

Слушайте, потому что я буду говорить важное, и изречение уст моих – правда;

Hear, for I will speak excellent things; And the opening of my lips shall be right things.

ибо истину произнесет язык мой, и нечестие – мерзость для уст моих;

For my mouth shall utter truth; And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

все слова уст моих справедливы; нет в них коварства и лукавства;

All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverse in them.

все они ясны для разумного и справедливы для приобретших знание.

They are all plain to him that understandeth, And right to them that find knowledge.

Примите учение мое, а не серебро; лучше знание, нежели отборное золото;

Receive my instruction, and not silver; And knowledge rather than choice gold.

потому что мудрость лучше жемчуга, и ничто из желаемого не сравнится с нею.

For wisdom is better than rubies; And all the things that may be desired are not to be compared unto it.

Я, премудрость, обитаю с разумом и ищу рассудительного знания.

I wisdom have made prudence my dwelling, And find out knowledge [and] discretion.

Страх Господень – ненавидеть зло; гордость и высокомерие и злой путь и коварные уста я ненавижу.

The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil: Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, And the perverse mouth, do I hate.

У меня совет и правда; я разум, у меня сила.

Counsel is mine, and sound knowledge: I am understanding; I have might.

Мною цари царствуют и повелители узаконяют правду;

By me kings reign, And princes decree justice.

мною начальствуют начальники и вельможи и все судьи земли.

By me princes rule, And nobles, [even] all the judges of the earth.

Любящих меня я люблю, и ищущие меня найдут меня;

I love them that love me; And those that seek me diligently shall find me.

богатство и слава у меня, сокровище непогибающее и правда;

Riches and honor are with me; [Yea], durable wealth and righteousness.

плоды мои лучше золота, и золота самого чистого, и пользы от меня больше, нежели от отборного серебра.

My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; And my revenue than choice silver.

Я хожу по пути правды, по стезям правосудия,

I walk in the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice;

чтобы доставить любящим меня существенное благо, и сокровищницы их я наполняю.

That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance, And that I may fill their treasuries.

Господь имел меня началом пути Своего, прежде созданий Своих, искони;

Jehovah possessed me in the beginning of his way, Before his works of old.

от века я помазана, от начала, прежде бытия земли.

I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, Before the earth was.

Я родилась, когда еще не существовали бездны, когда еще не было источников, обильных водою.

When there were no depths, I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water.

Я родилась прежде, нежели водружены были горы, прежде холмов,

Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills was I brought forth;

когда еще Он не сотворил ни земли, ни полей, ни начальных пылинок вселенной.

While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, Nor the beginning of the dust of the world.

Когда Он уготовлял небеса, [я была] там. Когда Он проводил круговую черту по лицу бездны,

When he established the heavens, I was there: When he set a circle upon the face of the deep,

когда утверждал вверху облака, когда укреплял источники бездны,

When he made firm the skies above, When the fountains of the deep became strong,

когда давал морю устав, чтобы воды не переступали пределов его, когда полагал основания земли:

When he gave to the sea its bound, That the waters should not transgress his commandment, When he marked out the foundations of the earth;

тогда я была при Нем художницею, и была радостью всякий день, веселясь пред лицем Его во все время,

Then I was by him, [as] a master workman; And I was daily [his] delight, Rejoicing always before him,

веселясь на земном кругу Его, и радость моя [была] с сынами человеческими.

Rejoicing in his habitable earth; And my delight was with the sons of men.

Итак, дети, послушайте меня; и блаженны те, которые хранят пути мои!

Now therefore, [my] sons, hearken unto me; For blessed are they that keep my ways.

Послушайте наставления и будьте мудры, и не отступайте [от] [него].

Hear instruction, and be wise, And refuse it not.

Блажен человек, который слушает меня, бодрствуя каждый день у ворот моих и стоя на страже у дверей моих!

Blessed is the man that heareth me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.

потому что, кто нашел меня, тот нашел жизнь, и получит благодать от Господа;

For whoso findeth me findeth life, And shall obtain favor of Jehovah.

а согрешающий против меня наносит вред душе своей: все ненавидящие меня любят смерть".

But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: All they that hate me love death.

Глава 9

Премудрость построила себе дом, вытесала семь столбов его,

Wisdom hath builded her house; She hath hewn out her seven pillars:

заколола жертву, растворила вино свое и приготовила у себя трапезу;

She hath killed her beasts; She hath mingled her wine; She hath also furnished her table:

послала слуг своих провозгласить с возвышенностей городских:

She hath sent forth her maidens; She crieth upon the highest places of the city:

"кто неразумен, обратись сюда!" И скудоумному она сказала:

Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: As for him that is void of understanding, she saith to him,

"идите, ешьте хлеб мой и пейте вино, мною растворенное;

Come, eat ye of my bread, And drink of the wine which I have mingled.

оставьте неразумие, и живите, и ходите путем разума".

Leave off, ye simple ones, and live; And walk in the way of understanding.

Поучающий кощунника наживет себе бесславие, и обличающий нечестивого – пятно себе.

He that correcteth a scoffer getteth to himself reviling; And he that reproveth a wicked man [getteth] himself a blot.

Не обличай кощунника, чтобы он не возненавидел тебя; обличай мудрого, и он возлюбит тебя;

Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate thee: Reprove a wise man, and he will love thee.

дай [наставление] мудрому, и он будет еще мудрее; научи правдивого, и он приумножит знание.

Give [instruction] to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

Начало мудрости – страх Господень, и познание Святаго – разум;

The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom; And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

потому что чрез меня умножатся дни твои, и прибавится тебе лет жизни.

For by me thy days shall be multiplied, And the years of thy life shall be increased.

если ты мудр, то мудр для себя; и если буен, то один потерпишь.

If thou art wise, thou art wise for thyself; And if thou scoffest, thou alone shalt bear it.

Женщина безрассудная, шумливая, глупая и ничего не знающая

The foolish woman is clamorous; [She is] simple, and knoweth nothing.

садится у дверей дома своего на стуле, на возвышенных местах города,

And she sitteth at the door of her house, On a seat in the high places of the city,

чтобы звать проходящих дорогою, идущих прямо своими путями:

To call to them that pass by, Who go right on their ways:

"кто глуп, обратись сюда!" и скудоумному сказала она:

Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither; And as for him that is void of understanding, she saith to him,

"воды краденые сладки, и утаенный хлеб приятен".

Stolen waters are sweet, And bread [eaten] in secret is pleasant.

И он не знает, что мертвецы там, и что в глубине преисподней зазванные ею. | [Но ты отскочи, не медли на месте, не останавливай взгляда твоего на ней; ибо таким образом ты пройдешь воду чужую. От воды чужой удаляйся, и из источника чужого не пей, чтобы пожить многое время, и чтобы прибавились тебе лета жизни.]

But he knoweth not that the dead are there; That her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

Глава 10

Притчи Соломона. Сын мудрый радует отца, а сын глупый – огорчение для его матери.

The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; But a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Не доставляют пользы сокровища неправедные, правда же избавляет от смерти.

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; But righteousness delivereth from death.

Не допустит Господь терпеть голод душе праведного, стяжание же нечестивых исторгнет.

Jehovah will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; But he thrusteth away the desire of the wicked.

Ленивая рука делает бедным, а рука прилежных обогащает.

He becometh poor that worketh with a slack hand; But the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

Собирающий во время лета – сын разумный, спящий же во время жатвы – сын беспутный.

He that gathereth in summer is a wise son; [But] he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

Благословения – на голове праведника, уста же беззаконных заградит насилие.

Blessings are upon the head of the righteous; But violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

Память праведника пребудет благословенна, а имя нечестивых омерзеет.

The memory of the righteous is blessed; But the name of the wicked shall rot.

Мудрый сердцем принимает заповеди, а глупый устами преткнется.

The wise in heart will receive commandments; But a prating fool shall fall.

Кто ходит в непорочности, тот ходит безопасно; а кто превращает пути свои, тот будет наказан.

He that walketh uprightly walketh surely; But he that perverteth his ways shall be known.

Кто мигает глазами, тот причиняет досаду, а глупый устами преткнется.

He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow; But a prating fool shall fall.

Уста праведника – источник жизни, уста же беззаконных заградит насилие.

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life; But violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

Ненависть возбуждает раздоры, но любовь покрывает все грехи.

Hatred stirreth up strifes; But love covereth all transgressions.

В устах разумного находится мудрость, но на теле глупого – розга.

In the lips of him that hath discernment wisdom is found; But a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

Мудрые сберегают знание, но уста глупого – близкая погибель.

Wise men lay up knowledge; But the mouth of the foolish is a present destruction.

Имущество богатого – крепкий город его, беда для бедных – скудость их.

The rich man`s wealth is his strong city: The destruction of the poor is their poverty.

Труды праведного – к жизни, успех нечестивого – ко греху.

The labor of the righteous [tendeth] to life; The increase of the wicked, to sin.

Кто хранит наставление, тот на пути к жизни; а отвергающий обличение – блуждает.

He is in the way of life that heedeth correction; But he that forsaketh reproof erreth.

Кто скрывает ненависть, у того уста лживые; и кто разглашает клевету, тот глуп.

He that hideth hatred is of lying lips; And he that uttereth a slander is a fool.

При многословии не миновать греха, а сдерживающий уста свои – разумен.

In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; But he that refraineth his lips doeth wisely.

Отборное серебро – язык праведного, сердце же нечестивых – ничтожество.

The tongue of the righteous is [as] choice silver: The heart of the wicked is little worth.

Уста праведного пасут многих, а глупые умирают от недостатка разума.

The lips of the righteous feed many; But the foolish die for lack of understanding.

Благословение Господне – оно обогащает и печали с собою не приносит.

The blessing of Jehovah, it maketh rich; And he addeth no sorrow therewith.

Для глупого преступное деяние как бы забава, а человеку разумному свойственна мудрость.

It is as sport to a fool to do wickedness; And [so is] wisdom to a man of understanding.

Чего страшится нечестивый, то и постигнет его, а желание праведников исполнится.

The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him; And the desire of the righteous shall be granted.

Как проносится вихрь, [так] нет более нечестивого; а праведник – на вечном основании.

When the whirlwind passeth, the wicked is no more; But the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

Что уксус для зубов и дым для глаз, то ленивый для посылающих его.

As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, So is the sluggard to them that send him.

Страх Господень прибавляет дней, лета же нечестивых сократятся.

The fear of Jehovah prolongeth days; But the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

Ожидание праведников – радость, а надежда нечестивых погибнет.

The hope of the righteous [shall be] gladness; But the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

Путь Господень – твердыня для непорочного и страх для делающих беззаконие.

The way of Jehovah is a stronghold to the upright; But it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.

Праведник во веки не поколеблется, нечестивые же не поживут на земле.

The righteous shall never be removed; But the wicked shall not dwell in the land.

Уста праведника источают мудрость, а язык зловредный отсечется.

The mouth of the righteous bringeth forth wisdom; But the perverse tongue shall be cut off.

Уста праведного знают благоприятное, а уста нечестивых – развращенное.

The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable; But the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] perverseness.

Глава 11

Неверные весы – мерзость пред Господом, но правильный вес угоден Ему.

A false balance is an abomination to Jehovah; But a just weight is his delight.

Придет гордость, придет и посрамление; но со смиренными – мудрость.

When pride cometh, then cometh shame; But with the lowly is wisdom.

Непорочность прямодушных будет руководить их, а лукавство коварных погубит их.

The integrity of the upright shall guide them; But the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them.

Не поможет богатство в день гнева, правда же спасет от смерти.

Riches profit not in the day of wrath; But righteousness delivereth from death.

Правда непорочного уравнивает путь его, а нечестивый падет от нечестия своего.

The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way; But the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

Правда прямодушных спасет их, а беззаконники будут уловлены беззаконием своим.

The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them; But the treacherous shall be taken in their own iniquity.

Со смертью человека нечестивого исчезает надежда, и ожидание беззаконных погибает.

When a wicked man dieth, [his] expectation shall perish; And the hope of iniquity perisheth.

Праведник спасается от беды, а вместо него попадает [в нее] нечестивый.

The righteous is delivered out of trouble, And the wicked cometh in his stead.

Устами лицемер губит ближнего своего, но праведники прозорливостью спасаются.

With his mouth the godless man destroyeth his neighbor; But through knowledge shall the righteous be delivered.

При благоденствии праведников веселится город, и при погибели нечестивых [бывает] торжество.

When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth; And when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

Благословением праведных возвышается город, а устами нечестивых разрушается.

By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted; But it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

Скудоумный высказывает презрение к ближнему своему; но разумный человек молчит.

He that despiseth his neighbor is void of wisdom; But a man of understanding holdeth his peace.

Кто ходит переносчиком, тот открывает тайну; но верный человек таит дело.

He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; But he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth a matter.

При недостатке попечения падает народ, а при многих советниках благоденствует.

Where no wise guidance is, the people falleth; But in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Зло причиняет себе, кто ручается за постороннего; а кто ненавидит ручательство, тот безопасен.

He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it; But he that hateth suretyship is secure.

Благонравная жена приобретает славу, а трудолюбивые приобретают богатство.

A gracious woman obtaineth honor; And violent men obtain riches.

Человек милосердый благотворит душе своей, а жестокосердый разрушает плоть свою.

The merciful man doeth good to his own soul; But he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.

Нечестивый делает дело ненадежное, а сеющему правду – награда верная.

The wicked earneth deceitful wages; But he that soweth righteousness [hath] a sure reward.

Праведность [ведет] к жизни, а стремящийся к злу [стремится] к смерти своей.

He that is stedfast in righteousness [shall attain] unto life; And he that pursueth evil [doeth it] to his own death.

Мерзость пред Господом – коварные сердцем; но благоугодны Ему непорочные в пути.

They that are perverse in heart are an abomination to Jehovah; But such as are perfect in [their] way are his delight.

Можно поручиться, что порочный не останется ненаказанным; семя же праведных спасется.

[Though] hand [join] in hand, the evil man shall not be unpunished; But the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

Что золотое кольцо в носу у свиньи, то женщина красивая и – безрассудная.

[As] a ring of gold in a swine`s snout, [So is] a fair woman that is without discretion.

Желание праведных [есть] одно добро, ожидание нечестивых – гнев.

The desire of the righteous is only good; [But] the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

Иной сыплет щедро, и [ему] еще прибавляется; а другой сверх меры бережлив, и однако же беднеет.

There is that scattereth, and increaseth yet more; And there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but [it tendeth] only to want.

Благотворительная душа будет насыщена, и кто напояет [других], тот и сам напоен будет.

The liberal soul shall be made fat; And he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

Кто удерживает у себя хлеб, того клянет народ; а на голове продающего – благословение.

He that withholdeth grain, the people shall curse him; But blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.

Кто стремится к добру, тот ищет благоволения; а кто ищет зла, к тому оно и приходит.

He that diligently seeketh good seeketh favor; But he that searcheth after evil, it shall come unto him.

Надеющийся на богатство свое упадет; а праведники, как лист, будут зеленеть.

He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; But the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf.

Расстроивающий дом свой получит в удел ветер, и глупый будет рабом мудрого сердцем.

He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind; And the foolish shall be servant to the wise of heart.

Плод праведника – древо жизни, и мудрый привлекает души.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; And he that is wise winneth souls.

Так праведнику воздается на земле, тем паче нечестивому и грешнику.

Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: How much more the wicked and the sinner!

Глава 12

Кто любит наставление, тот любит знание; а кто ненавидит обличение, тот невежда.

Whoso loveth correction loveth knowledge; But he that hateth reproof is brutish.

Добрый приобретает благоволение от Господа; а человека коварного Он осудит.

A good man shall obtain favor of Jehovah; But a man of wicked devices will he condemn.

Не утвердит себя человек беззаконием; корень же праведников неподвижен.

A man shall not be established by wickedness; But the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

Добродетельная жена – венец для мужа своего; а позорная – как гниль в костях его.

A worthy woman is the crown of her husband; But she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

Промышления праведных – правда, а замыслы нечестивых – коварство.

The thoughts of the righteous are just; [But] the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

Речи нечестивых – засада для пролития крови, уста же праведных спасают их.

The words of the wicked are of lying in wait for blood; But the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

Коснись нечестивых несчастие – и нет их, а дом праведных стоит.

The wicked are overthrown, and are not; But the house of the righteous shall stand.

Хвалят человека по мере разума его, а развращенный сердцем будет в презрении.

A man shall be commended according to his wisdom; But he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.

Лучше простой, но работающий на себя, нежели выдающий себя за знатного, но нуждающийся в хлебе.

Better is he that is lightly esteemed, and hath a servant, Than he that honoreth himself, and lacketh bread.

Праведный печется и о жизни скота своего, сердце же нечестивых жестоко.

A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast; But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

Кто возделывает землю свою, тот будет насыщаться хлебом; а кто идет по следам празднолюбцев, тот скудоумен.

He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread; But he that followeth after vain [persons] is void of understanding.

Нечестивый желает уловить в сеть зла; но корень праведных тверд.

The wicked desireth the net of evil men; But the root of the righteous yieldeth [fruit].

Нечестивый уловляется грехами уст своих; но праведник выйдет из беды.

In the transgression of the lips is a snare to the evil man; But the righteous shall come out of trouble.

От плода уст [своих] человек насыщается добром, и воздаяние человеку – по делам рук его.

A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth; And the doings of a man`s hands shall be rendered unto him.

Путь глупого прямой в его глазах; но кто слушает совета, тот мудр.

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes; But he that is wise hearkeneth unto counsel.

У глупого тотчас же выкажется гнев его, а благоразумный скрывает оскорбление.

A fool`s vexation is presently known; But a prudent man concealeth shame.

Кто говорит то, что знает, тот говорит правду; а у свидетеля ложного – обман.

He that uttereth truth showeth forth righteousness; But a false witness, deceit.

Иной пустослов уязвляет как мечом, а язык мудрых – врачует.

There is that speaketh rashly like the piercings of a sword; But the tongue of the wise is health.

Уста правдивые вечно пребывают, а лживый язык – только на мгновение.

The lip of truth shall be established for ever; But a lying tongue is but for a moment.

Коварство – в сердце злоумышленников, радость – у миротворцев.

Deceit is in the heart of them that devise evil; But to the counsellors of peace is joy.

Не приключится праведнику никакого зла, нечестивые же будут преисполнены зол.

There shall no mischief happen to the righteous; But the wicked shall be filled with evil.

Мерзость пред Господом – уста лживые, а говорящие истину благоугодны Ему.

Lying lips are an abomination to Jehovah; But they that deal truly are his delight.

Человек рассудительный скрывает знание, а сердце глупых высказывает глупость.

A prudent man concealeth knowledge; But the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

Рука прилежных будет господствовать, а ленивая будет под данью.

The hand of the diligent shall bear rule; But the slothful shall be put under taskwork.

Тоска на сердце человека подавляет его, а доброе слово развеселяет его.

Heaviness in the heart of a man maketh it stoop; But a good word maketh it glad.

Праведник указывает ближнему своему путь, а путь нечестивых вводит их в заблуждение.

The righteous is a guide to his neighbor; But the way of the wicked causeth them to err.

Ленивый не жарит своей дичи; а имущество человека прилежного многоценно.

The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting; But the precious substance of men [is to] the diligent.

На пути правды – жизнь, и на стезе ее нет смерти.

In the way of righteousness is life; And in the pathway thereof there is no death.

Глава 13

Мудрый сын [слушает] наставление отца, а буйный не слушает обличения.

A wise son [heareth] his father`s instruction; But a scoffer heareth not rebuke.

От плода уст [своих] человек вкусит добро, душа же законопреступников – зло.

A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth; But the soul of the treacherous [shall eat] violence.

Кто хранит уста свои, тот бережет душу свою; а кто широко раскрывает свой рот, тому беда.

He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life; [But] he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

Душа ленивого желает, но тщетно; а душа прилежных насытится.

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

Праведник ненавидит ложное слово, а нечестивый срамит и бесчестит [себя].

A righteous man hateth lying; But a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

Правда хранит непорочного в пути, а нечестие губит грешника.

Righteousness guardeth him that is upright in the way; But wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

Иной выдает себя за богатого, а у него ничего нет; другой выдает себя за бедного, а у него богатства много.

There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: There is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great wealth.

Богатством своим человек выкупает жизнь [свою], а бедный и угрозы не слышит.

The ransom of a man`s life is his riches; But the poor heareth no threatening.

Свет праведных весело горит, светильник же нечестивых угасает.

The light of the righteous rejoiceth; But the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

От высокомерия происходит раздор, а у советующихся – мудрость.

By pride cometh only contention; But with the well-advised is wisdom.

Богатство от суетности истощается, а собирающий трудами умножает его.

Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished; But he that gathereth by labor shall have increase.

Надежда, долго не сбывающаяся, томит сердце, а исполнившееся желание – [как] древо жизни.

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; But when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

Кто пренебрегает словом, тот причиняет вред себе; а кто боится заповеди, тому воздается.

Whoso despiseth the word bringeth destruction on himself; But he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

[У сына лукавого ничего нет доброго, а у разумного раба дела благоуспешны, и путь его прямой.]

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, That one may depart from the snares of death.

Учение мудрого – источник жизни, удаляющий от сетей смерти.

Good understanding giveth favor; But the way of the transgressor is hard.

Добрый разум доставляет приятность, путь же беззаконных жесток.

Every prudent man worketh with knowledge; But a fool flaunteth [his] folly.

Всякий благоразумный действует с знанием, а глупый выставляет напоказ глупость.

A wicked messenger falleth into evil; But a faithful ambassador is health.

Худой посол попадает в беду, а верный посланник – спасение.

Poverty and shame [shall be to] him that refuseth correction; But he that regardeth reproof shall be honored.

Нищета и посрамление отвергающему учение; а кто соблюдает наставление, будет в чести.

The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul; But it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.

Желание исполнившееся – приятно для души; но несносно для глупых уклоняться от зла.

Walk with wise men, and thou shalt be wise; But the companion of fools shall smart for it.

Общающийся с мудрыми будет мудр, а кто дружит с глупыми, развратится.

Evil pursueth sinners; But the righteous shall be recompensed with good.

Грешников преследует зло, а праведникам воздается добром.

A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children`s children; And the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the righteous.

Добрый оставляет наследство [и] внукам, а богатство грешника сберегается для праведного.

Much food [is in] the tillage of the poor; But there is that is destroyed by reason of injustice.

Много хлеба [бывает] и на ниве бедных; но некоторые гибнут от беспорядка.

He that spareth his rod hateth his son; But he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Кто жалеет розги своей, тот ненавидит сына; а кто любит, тот с детства наказывает его.

The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul; But the belly of the wicked shall want.

Глава 14

Мудрая жена устроит дом свой, а глупая разрушит его своими руками.

Every wise woman buildeth her house; But the foolish plucketh it down with her own hands.

Идущий прямым путем боится Господа; но чьи пути кривы, тот небрежет о Нем.

He that walketh in his uprightness feareth Jehovah; But he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.

В устах глупого – бич гордости; уста же мудрых охраняют их.

In the mouth of the foolish is a rod for [his] pride; But the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

Где нет волов, [там] ясли пусты; а много прибыли от силы волов.

Where no oxen are, the crib is clean; But much increase is by the strength of the ox.

Верный свидетель не лжет, а свидетель ложный наговорит много лжи.

A faithful witness will not lie; But a false witness uttereth lies.

Распутный ищет мудрости, и не находит; а для разумного знание легко.

A scoffer seeketh wisdom, and [findeth it] not; But knowledge is easy unto him that hath understanding.

Отойди от человека глупого, у которого ты не замечаешь разумных уст.

Go into the presence of a foolish man, And thou shalt not perceive [in him] the lips of knowledge.

Мудрость разумного – знание пути своего, глупость же безрассудных – заблуждение.

The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way; But the folly of fools is deceit.

Глупые смеются над грехом, а посреди праведных – благоволение.

A trespass-offering mocketh fools; But among the upright there is good will.

Сердце знает горе души своей, и в радость его не вмешается чужой.

The heart knoweth its own bitterness; And a stranger doth not intermeddle with its joy.

Дом беззаконных разорится, а жилище праведных процветет.

The house of the wicked shall be overthrown; But the tent of the upright shall flourish.

Есть пути, которые кажутся человеку прямыми; но конец их – путь к смерти.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man; But the end thereof are the ways of death.

И при смехе [иногда] болит сердце, и концом радости бывает печаль.

Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; And the end of mirth is heaviness.

Человек с развращенным сердцем насытится от путей своих, и добрый – от своих.

The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways; And a good man [shall be satisfied] from himself.

Глупый верит всякому слову, благоразумный же внимателен к путям своим.

The simple believeth every word; But the prudent man looketh well to his going.

Мудрый боится и удаляется от зла, а глупый раздражителен и самонадеян.

A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil; But the fool beareth himself insolently, and is confident.

Вспыльчивый может сделать глупость; но человек, умышленно делающий зло, ненавистен.

He that is soon angry will deal foolishly; And a man of wicked devices is hated.

Невежды получают в удел себе глупость, а благоразумные увенчаются знанием.

The simple inherit folly; But the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

Преклонятся злые пред добрыми и нечестивые – у ворот праведника.

The evil bow down before the good; And the wicked, at the gates of the righteous.

Бедный ненавидим бывает даже близким своим, а у богатого много друзей.

The poor is hated even of his own neighbor; But the rich hath many friends.

Кто презирает ближнего своего, тот грешит; а кто милосерд к бедным, тот блажен.

He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth; But he that hath pity on the poor, happy is he.

Не заблуждаются ли умышляющие зло? но милость и верность у благомыслящих.

Do they not err that devise evil? But mercy and truth [shall be to] them that devise good.

От всякого труда есть прибыль, а от пустословия только ущерб.

In all labor there is profit; But the talk of the lips [tendeth] only to penury.

Венец мудрых – богатство их, а глупость невежд глупость [и] [есть].

The crown of the wise is their riches; [But] the folly of fools is [only] folly.

Верный свидетель спасает души, а лживый наговорит много лжи.

A true witness delivereth souls; But he that uttereth lies [causeth] deceit.

В страхе пред Господом – надежда твердая, и сынам Своим Он прибежище.

In the fear of Jehovah is strong confidence; And his children shall have a place of refuge.

Страх Господень – источник жизни, удаляющий от сетей смерти.

The fear of Jehovah is a fountain of life, That one may depart from the snares of death.

Во множестве народа – величие царя, а при малолюдстве народа беда государю.

In the multitude of people is the king`s glory; But in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.

У терпеливого человека много разума, а раздражительный выказывает глупость.

He that is slow to anger is of great understanding; But he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

Кроткое сердце – жизнь для тела, а зависть – гниль для костей.

A tranquil heart is the life of the flesh; But envy is the rottenness of the bones.

Кто теснит бедного, тот хулит Творца его; чтущий же Его благотворит нуждающемуся.

He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker; But he that hath mercy on the needy honoreth him.

За зло свое нечестивый будет отвергнут, а праведный и при смерти своей имеет надежду.

The wicked is thrust down in his evil-doing; But the righteous hath a refuge in his death.

Мудрость почиет в сердце разумного, и среди глупых дает знать о себе.

Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding; But [that which is] in the inward part of fools is made known.

Праведность возвышает народ, а беззаконие – бесчестие народов.

Righteousness exalteth a nation; But sin is a reproach to any people.

Благоволение царя – к рабу разумному, а гнев его – против того, кто позорит его.

The king`s favor is toward a servant that dealeth wisely; But his wrath will be [against] him that causeth shame.

Глава 15

Кроткий ответ отвращает гнев, а оскорбительное слово возбуждает ярость.

A soft answer turneth away wrath; But a grievous word stirreth up anger.

Язык мудрых сообщает добрые знания, а уста глупых изрыгают глупость.

The tongue of the wise uttereth knowledge aright; But the mouth of fools poureth out folly.

На всяком месте очи Господни: они видят злых и добрых.

The eyes of Jehovah are in every place, Keeping watch upon the evil and the good.

Кроткий язык – древо жизни, но необузданный – сокрушение духа.

A gentle tongue is a tree of life; But perverseness therein is a breaking of the spirit.

Глупый пренебрегает наставлением отца своего; а кто внимает обличениям, тот благоразумен.

A fool despiseth his father`s correction; But he that regardeth reproof getteth prudence.

В доме праведника – обилие сокровищ, а в прибытке нечестивого – расстройство.

In the house of the righteous is much treasure; But in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

Уста мудрых распространяют знание, а сердце глупых не так.

The lips of the wise disperse knowledge; But the heart of the foolish [doeth] not so.

Жертва нечестивых – мерзость пред Господом, а молитва праведных благоугодна Ему.

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah; But the prayer of the upright is his delight.

Мерзость пред Господом – путь нечестивого, а идущего путем правды Он любит.

The way of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah; But he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.

Злое наказание – уклоняющемуся от пути, и ненавидящий обличение погибнет.

There is grievous correction for him that forsaketh the way; [And] he that hateth reproof shall die.

Преисподняя и Аваддон [открыты] пред Господом, тем более сердца сынов человеческих.

Sheol and Abaddon are before Jehovah: How much more then the hearts of the children of men!

Не любит распутный обличающих его, и к мудрым не пойдет.

A scoffer loveth not to be reproved; He will not go unto the wise.

Веселое сердце делает лице веселым, а при сердечной скорби дух унывает.

A glad heart maketh a cheerful countenance; But by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.

Сердце разумного ищет знания, уста же глупых питаются глупостью.

The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge; But the mouth of fools feedeth on folly.

Все дни несчастного печальны; а у кого сердце весело, у того всегда пир.

All the days of the afflicted are evil; But he that is of a cheerful heart [hath] a continual feast.

Лучше немногое при страхе Господнем, нежели большое сокровище, и при нем тревога.

Better is little, with the fear of Jehovah, Than great treasure and trouble therewith.

Лучше блюдо зелени, и при нем любовь, нежели откормленный бык, и при нем ненависть.

Better is a dinner of herbs, where love is, Than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

Вспыльчивый человек возбуждает раздор, а терпеливый утишает распрю.

A wrathful man stirreth up contention; But he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

Путь ленивого – как терновый плетень, а путь праведных – гладкий.

The way of the sluggard is as a hedge of thorns; But the path of the upright is made a highway.

Мудрый сын радует отца, а глупый человек пренебрегает мать свою.

A wise son maketh a glad father; But a foolish man despiseth his mother.

Глупость – радость для малоумного, а человек разумный идет прямою дорогою.

Folly is joy to him that is void of wisdom; But a man of understanding maketh straight his going.

Без совета предприятия расстроятся, а при множестве советников они состоятся.

Where there is no counsel, purposes are disappointed; But in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

Радость человеку в ответе уст его, и как хорошо слово вовремя!

A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth; And a word in due season, how good is it!

Путь жизни мудрого вверх, чтобы уклониться от преисподней внизу.

To the wise the way of life [goeth] upward, That he may depart from Sheol beneath.

Дом надменных разорит Господь, а межу вдовы укрепит.

Jehovah will root up the house of the proud; But he will establish the border of the widow.

Мерзость пред Господом – помышления злых, слова же непорочных угодны Ему.

Evil devices are an abomination to Jehovah; But pleasant words [are] pure.

Корыстолюбивый расстроит дом свой, а ненавидящий подарки будет жить.

He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; But he that hateth bribes shall live.

Сердце праведного обдумывает ответ, а уста нечестивых изрыгают зло.

The heart of the righteous studieth to answer; But the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

Далек Господь от нечестивых, а молитву праведников слышит.

Jehovah is far from the wicked; But he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

Светлый взгляд радует сердце, добрая весть утучняет кости.

The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart; [And] good tidings make the bones fat.

Ухо, внимательное к учению жизни, пребывает между мудрыми.

The ear that hearkeneth to the reproof of life Shall abide among the wise.

Отвергающий наставление нерадеет о своей душе; а кто внимает обличению, тот приобретает разум.

He that refuseth correction despiseth his own soul; But he that hearkeneth to reproof getteth understanding.

Страх Господень научает мудрости, и славе предшествует смирение.

The fear of Jehovah is the instruction of wisdom; And before honor [goeth] humility.

Глава 16

Человеку [принадлежат] предположения сердца, но от Господа ответ языка.

The plans of the heart belong to man; But the answer of the tongue is from Jehovah.

Все пути человека чисты в его глазах, но Господь взвешивает души.

All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; But Jehovah weigheth the spirits.

Предай Господу дела твои, и предприятия твои совершатся.

Commit thy works unto Jehovah, And thy purposes shall be established.

Все сделал Господь ради Себя; и даже нечестивого [блюдет] на день бедствия.

Jehovah hath made everything for its own end; Yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

Мерзость пред Господом всякий надменный сердцем; можно поручиться, что он не останется ненаказанным.

Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to Jehovah: [Though] hand [join] in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

Милосердием и правдою очищается грех, и страх Господень отводит от зла.

By mercy and truth iniquity is atoned for; And by the fear of Jehovah men depart from evil.

Когда Господу угодны пути человека, Он и врагов его примиряет с ним.

When a man`s ways please Jehovah, He maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.

Лучше немногое с правдою, нежели множество прибытков с неправдою.

Better is a little, with righteousness, Than great revenues with injustice.

Сердце человека обдумывает свой путь, но Господь управляет шествием его.

A man`s heart deviseth his way; But Jehovah directeth his steps.

В устах царя – слово вдохновенное; уста его не должны погрешать на суде.

A divine sentence is in the lips of the king; His mouth shall not transgress in judgment.

Верные весы и весовые чаши – от Господа; от Него же все гири в суме.

A just balance and scales are Jehovah`s; All the weights of the bag are his work.

Мерзость для царей – дело беззаконное, потому что правдою утверждается престол.

It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness; For the throne is established by righteousness.

Приятны царю уста правдивые, и говорящего истину он любит.

Righteous lips are the delight of kings; And they love him that speaketh right.

Царский гнев – вестник смерти; но мудрый человек умилостивит его.

The wrath of a king is [as] messengers of death; But a wise man will pacify it.

В светлом взоре царя – жизнь, и благоволение его – как облако с поздним дождем.

In the light of the king`s countenance is life; And his favor is as a cloud of the latter rain.

Приобретение мудрости гораздо лучше золота, и приобретение разума предпочтительнее отборного серебра.

How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! Yea, to get understanding is rather to be chosen than silver.

Путь праведных – уклонение от зла: тот бережет душу свою, кто хранит путь свой.

The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: He that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.

Погибели предшествует гордость, и падению – надменность.

Pride [goeth] before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.

Лучше смиряться духом с кроткими, нежели разделять добычу с гордыми.

Better it is to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, Than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Кто ведет дело разумно, тот найдет благо, и кто надеется на Господа, тот блажен.

He that giveth heed unto the word shall find good; And whoso trusteth in Jehovah, happy is he.

Мудрый сердцем прозовется благоразумным, и сладкая речь прибавит к учению.

The wise in heart shall be called prudent; And the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.

Разум для имеющих его – источник жизни, а ученость глупых – глупость.

Understanding is a well-spring of life unto him that hath it; But the correction of fools is [their] folly.

Сердце мудрого делает язык его мудрым и умножает знание в устах его.

The heart of the wise instructeth his mouth, And addeth learning to his lips.

Приятная речь – сотовый мед, сладка для души и целебна для костей.

Pleasant words are [as] a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Есть пути, которые кажутся человеку прямыми, но конец их путь к смерти.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.

Трудящийся трудится для себя, потому что понуждает его [к] [тому] рот его.

The appetite of the laboring man laboreth for him; For his mouth urgeth him [thereto].

Человек лукавый замышляет зло, и на устах его как бы огонь палящий.

A worthless man deviseth mischief; And in his lips there is as a scorching fire.

Человек коварный сеет раздор, и наушник разлучает друзей.

A perverse man scattereth abroad strife; And a whisperer separateth chief friends.

Человек неблагонамеренный развращает ближнего своего и ведет его на путь недобрый;

A man of violence enticeth his neighbor, And leadeth him in a way that is not good.

прищуривает глаза свои, чтобы придумать коварство; закусывая себе губы, совершает злодейство.

He that shutteth his eyes, [it is] to devise perverse things: He that compresseth his lips bringeth evil to pass.

Венец славы – седина, которая находится на пути правды.

The hoary head is a crown of glory; It shall be found in the way of righteousness.

Долготерпеливый лучше храброго, и владеющий собою [лучше] завоевателя города.

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; And he that ruleth his spirit, than he that taketh a city.

В полу бросается жребий, но все решение его – от Господа.

The lot is cast into the lap; But the whole disposing thereof is of Jehovah.

Глава 17

Лучше кусок сухого хлеба, и с ним мир, нежели дом, полный заколотого скота, с раздором.

Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, Than a house full of feasting with strife.

Разумный раб господствует над беспутным сыном и между братьями разделит наследство.

A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, And shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren.

Плавильня – для серебра, и горнило – для золота, а сердца испытывает Господь.

The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; But Jehovah trieth the hearts.

Злодей внимает устам беззаконным, лжец слушается языка пагубного.

An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; [And] a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.

Кто ругается над нищим, тот хулит Творца его; кто радуется несчастью, тот не останется ненаказанным.

Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; [And] he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

Венец стариков – сыновья сыновей, и слава детей – родители их.

Children`s children are the crown of old men; And the glory of children are their fathers.

Неприлична глупому важная речь, тем паче знатному – уста лживые.

Excellent speech becometh not a fool; Much less do lying lips a prince.

Подарок – драгоценный камень в глазах владеющего им: куда ни обратится он, успеет.

A bribe is [as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

Прикрывающий проступок ищет любви; а кто снова напоминает о нем, тот удаляет друга.

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends.

На разумного сильнее действует выговор, нежели на глупого сто ударов.

A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding Than a hundred stripes into a fool.

Возмутитель ищет только зла; поэтому жестокий ангел будет послан против него.

An evil man seeketh only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

Лучше встретить человеку медведицу, лишенную детей, нежели глупца с его глупостью.

Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly.

Кто за добро воздает злом, от дома того не отойдет зло.

Whoso rewardeth evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house.

Начало ссоры – как прорыв воды; оставь ссору прежде, нежели разгорелась она.

The beginning of strife is [as] when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.

Оправдывающий нечестивого и обвиняющий праведного – оба мерзость пред Господом.

He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.

К чему сокровище в руках глупца? Для приобретения мудрости [у] [него] нет разума.

Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding?

Друг любит во всякое время и, как брат, явится во время несчастья.

A friend loveth at all times; And a brother is born for adversity.

Человек малоумный дает руку и ручается за ближнего своего.

A man void of understanding striketh hands, And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor.

Кто любит ссоры, любит грех, и кто высоко поднимает ворота свои, тот ищет падения.

He loveth transgression that loveth strife: He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction.

Коварное сердце не найдет добра, и лукавый язык попадет в беду.

He that hath a wayward heart findeth no good; And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

Родил кто глупого, – себе на горе, и отец глупого не порадуется.

He that begetteth a fool [doeth it] to his sorrow; And the father of a fool hath no joy.

Веселое сердце благотворно, как врачевство, а унылый дух сушит кости.

A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones.

Нечестивый берет подарок из пазухи, чтобы извратить пути правосудия.

A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom, To pervert the ways of justice.

Мудрость – пред лицем у разумного, а глаза глупца – на конце земли.

Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding; But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

Глупый сын – досада отцу своему и огорчение для матери своей.

A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her that bare him.

Нехорошо и обвинять правого, [и] бить вельмож за правду.

Also to punish the righteous is not good, [Nor] to smite the noble for [their] uprightness.

Разумный воздержан в словах своих, и благоразумный хладнокровен.

He that spareth his words hath knowledge; And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding.

И глупец, когда молчит, может показаться мудрым, и затворяющий уста свои – благоразумным.

Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; When he shutteth his lips, he is [esteemed as] prudent.

Глава 18

Прихоти ищет своенравный, восстает против всего умного.

He that separateth himself seeketh [his own] desire, And rageth against all sound wisdom.

Глупый не любит знания, а только бы выказать свой ум.

A fool hath no delight in understanding, But only that his heart may reveal itself.

С приходом нечестивого приходит и презрение, а с бесславием – поношение.

When the wicked cometh, there cometh also contempt, And with ignominy [cometh] reproach.

Слова уст человеческих – глубокие воды; источник мудрости – струящийся поток.

The words of a man`s mouth are [as] deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is [as] a flowing brook.

Нехорошо быть лицеприятным к нечестивому, чтобы ниспровергнуть праведного на суде.

To respect the person of the wicked is not good, [Nor] to turn aside the righteous in judgment.

Уста глупого идут в ссору, и слова его вызывают побои.

A fool`s lips enter into contention, And his mouth calleth for stripes.

Язык глупого – гибель для него, и уста его – сеть для души его.

A fool`s mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul.

[Ленивого низлагает страх, а души женоподобные будут голодать.]

The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts.

Слова наушника – как лакомства, и они входят во внутренность чрева.

He also that is slack in his work Is brother to him that is a destroyer.

Нерадивый в работе своей – брат расточителю.

The name of Jehovah is a strong tower; The righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

Имя Господа – крепкая башня: убегает в нее праведник – и безопасен.

The rich man`s wealth is his strong city, And as a high wall in his own imagination.

Имение богатого – крепкий город его, и как высокая ограда в его воображении.

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty; And before honor [goeth] humility.

Перед падением возносится сердце человека, а смирение предшествует славе.

He that giveth answer before he heareth, It is folly and shame unto him.

Кто дает ответ не выслушав, тот глуп, и стыд ему.

The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; But a broken spirit who can bear?

Дух человека переносит его немощи; а пораженный дух – кто может подкрепить его?

The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; And the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

Сердце разумного приобретает знание, и ухо мудрых ищет знания.

A man`s gift maketh room for him, And bringeth him before great men.

Подарок у человека дает ему простор и до вельмож доведет его.

He that pleadeth his cause first [seemeth] just; But his neighbor cometh and searcheth him out.

Первый в тяжбе своей прав, но приходит соперник его и исследывает его.

The lot causeth contentions to cease, And parteth between the mighty.

Жребий прекращает споры и решает между сильными.

A brother offended [is harder to be won] than a strong city; And [such] contentions are like the bars of a castle.

Озлобившийся брат [неприступнее] крепкого города, и ссоры подобны запорам замка.

A man`s belly shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; With the increase of his lips shall he be satisfied.

От плода уст человека наполняется чрево его; произведением уст своих он насыщается.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue; And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Смерть и жизнь – во власти языка, и любящие его вкусят от плодов его.

Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, And obtaineth favor of Jehovah.

Кто нашел [добрую] жену, тот нашел благо и получил благодать от Господа.

The poor useth entreaties; But the rich answereth roughly.

С мольбою говорит нищий, а богатый отвечает грубо.

He that maketh many friends [doeth it] to his own destruction; But there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

Глава 19

Лучше бедный, ходящий в своей непорочности, нежели [богатый] со лживыми устами, и притом глупый.

Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity Than he that is perverse in his lips and is a fool.

Нехорошо душе без знания, и торопливый ногами оступится.

Also, that the soul be without knowledge is not good; And he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

Глупость человека извращает путь его, а сердце его негодует на Господа.

The foolishness of man subverteth his way; And his heart fretteth against Jehovah.

Богатство прибавляет много друзей, а бедный оставляется и другом своим.

Wealth addeth many friends; But the poor is separated from his friend.

Лжесвидетель не останется ненаказанным, и кто говорит ложь, не спасется.

A false witness shall not be unpunished; And he that uttereth lies shall not escape.

Многие заискивают у знатных, и всякий – друг человеку, делающему подарки.

Many will entreat the favor of the liberal man; And every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

Бедного ненавидят все братья его, тем паче друзья его удаляются от него: гонится за ними, чтобы поговорить, но и этого нет.

All the brethren of the poor do hate him: How much more do his friends go far from him! He pursueth [them with] words, [but] they are gone.

Кто приобретает разум, тот любит душу свою; кто наблюдает благоразумие, тот находит благо.

He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: He that keepeth understanding shall find good.

Лжесвидетель не останется ненаказанным, и кто говорит ложь, погибнет.

A false witness shall not be unpunished; And he that uttereth lies shall perish.

Неприлична глупцу пышность, тем паче рабу господство над князьями.

Delicate living is not seemly for a fool; Much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

Благоразумие делает человека медленным на гнев, и слава для него – быть снисходительным к проступкам.

The discretion of a man maketh him slow to anger; And it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

Гнев царя – как рев льва, а благоволение его – как роса на траву.

The king`s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; But his favor is as dew upon the grass.

Глупый сын – сокрушение для отца своего, и сварливая жена – сточная труба.

A foolish son is the calamity of his father; And the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

Дом и имение – наследство от родителей, а разумная жена – от Господа.

House and riches are an inheritance from fathers; But a prudent wife is from Jehovah.

Леность погружает в сонливость, и нерадивая душа будет терпеть голод.

Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; And the idle soul shall suffer hunger.

Хранящий заповедь хранит душу свою, а нерадящий о путях своих погибнет.

He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his soul; [But] he that is careless of his ways shall die.

Благотворящий бедному дает взаймы Господу, и Он воздаст ему за благодеяние его.

He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto Jehovah, And his good deed will he pay him again.

Наказывай сына своего, доколе есть надежда, и не возмущайся криком его.

Chasten thy son, seeing there is hope; nd set not thy heart on his destruction.

Гневливый пусть терпит наказание, потому что, если пощадишь [его], придется тебе еще больше наказывать его.

A man of great wrath shall bear the penalty; For if thou deliver [him], thou must do it yet again.

Слушайся совета и принимай обличение, чтобы сделаться тебе впоследствии мудрым.

Hear counsel, and receive instruction, That thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

Много замыслов в сердце человека, но состоится только определенное Господом.

There are many devices in a man`s heart; But the counsel of Jehovah, that shall stand.

Радость человеку – благотворительность его, и бедный человек лучше, нежели лживый.

That which maketh a man to be desired is his kindness; And a poor man is better than a liar.

Страх Господень [ведет] к жизни, и [кто имеет его], всегда будет доволен, и зло не постигнет его.

The fear of Jehovah [tendeth] to life; And he [that hath it] shall abide satisfied; He shall not be visited with evil.

Ленивый опускает руку свою в чашу, и не хочет донести ее до рта своего.

The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish, And will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

Если ты накажешь кощунника, то и простой сделается благоразумным; и [если] обличишь разумного, то он поймет наставление.

Smite a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; And reprove one that hath understanding, [and] he will understand knowledge.

Разоряющий отца и выгоняющий мать – сын срамной и бесчестный.

He that doeth violence to his father, and chaseth away his mother, Is a son that causeth shame and bringeth reproach.

Перестань, сын мой, слушать внушения об уклонении от изречений разума.

Cease, my son, to hear instruction [Only] to err from the words of knowledge.

Лукавый свидетель издевается над судом, и уста беззаконных глотают неправду.

A worthless witness mocketh at justice; And the mouth of the wicked swalloweth iniquity.

Готовы для кощунствующих суды, и побои – на тело глупых.

Judgments are prepared for scoffers, And stripes for the back of fools.

Глава 20

Вино – глумливо, сикера – буйна; и всякий, увлекающийся ими, неразумен.

Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.

Гроза царя – как бы рев льва: кто раздражает его, тот грешит против самого себя.

The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: He that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life.

Честь для человека – отстать от ссоры; а всякий глупец задорен.

It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife; But every fool will be quarrelling.

Ленивец зимою не пашет: поищет летом – и нет ничего.

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; Therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Помыслы в сердце человека – глубокие воды, но человек разумный вычерпывает их.

Counsel in the heart of man is [like] deep water; But a man of understanding will draw it out.

Многие хвалят человека за милосердие, но правдивого человека кто находит?

Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; But a faithful man who can find?

Праведник ходит в своей непорочности: блаженны дети его после него!

A righteous man that walketh in his integrity, Blessed are his children after him.

Царь, сидящий на престоле суда, разгоняет очами своими все злое.

A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment Scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

Кто может сказать: "я очистил мое сердце, я чист от греха моего?"

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

Неодинаковые весы, неодинаковая мера, то и другое – мерзость пред Господом.

Diverse weights, and diverse measures, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.

Можно узнать даже отрока по занятиям его, чисто ли и правильно ли будет поведение его.

Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, Whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

Ухо слышащее и глаз видящий – и то и другое создал Господь.

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them.

Не люби спать, чтобы тебе не обеднеть; держи открытыми глаза твои, и будешь досыта есть хлеб.

Love not sleep, let thou come to poverty; Open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

"Дурно, дурно", говорит покупатель, а когда отойдет, хвалится.

It is bad, it is bad, saith the buyer; But when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

Есть золото и много жемчуга, но драгоценная утварь – уста разумные.

There is gold, and abundance of rubies; But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Возьми платье его, так как он поручился за чужого; и за стороннего возьми от него залог.

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; And hold him in pledge [that is surety] for foreigners.

Сладок для человека хлеб, [приобретенный] неправдою; но после рот его наполнится дресвою.

Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; But afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

Предприятия получают твердость чрез совещание, и по совещании веди войну.

Every purpose is established by counsel; And by wise guidance make thou war.

Кто ходит переносчиком, тот открывает тайну; и кто широко раскрывает рот, с тем не сообщайся.

He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; Therefore company not with him that openeth wide his lips.

Кто злословит отца своего и свою мать, того светильник погаснет среди глубокой тьмы.

Whoso curseth his father or his mother, His lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.

Наследство, поспешно захваченное вначале, не благословится впоследствии.

An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; But the end thereof shall not be blessed.

Не говори: "я отплачу за зло"; предоставь Господу, и Он сохранит тебя.

Say not thou, I will recompense evil: Wait for Jehovah, and he will save thee.

Мерзость пред Господом – неодинаковые гири, и неверные весы – не добро.

Diverse weights are an abomination to Jehovah; And a false balance is not good.

От Господа направляются шаги человека; человеку же как узнать путь свой?

A man`s goings are of Jehovah; How then can man understand his way?

Сеть для человека – поспешно давать обет, и после обета обдумывать.

It is a snare to a man rashly to say, [It is] holy, And after vows to make inquiry.

Мудрый царь вывеет нечестивых и обратит на них колесо.

A wise king winnoweth the wicked, And bringeth the [threshing] -wheel over them.

Светильник Господень – дух человека, испытывающий все глубины сердца.

The spirit of man is the lamp of Jehovah, Searching all his innermost parts.

Милость и истина охраняют царя, и милостью он поддерживает престол свой.

Kindness and truth preserve the king; And his throne is upholden by kindness.

Слава юношей – сила их, а украшение стариков – седина.

The glory of young men is their strength; And the beauty of old men is the hoary head.

Раны от побоев – врачевство против зла, и удары, проникающие во внутренности чрева.

Stripes that wound cleanse away evil; And strokes [reach] the innermost parts.

Глава 21

Сердце царя – в руке Господа, как потоки вод: куда захочет, Он направляет его.

The king`s heart is in the hand of Jehovah as the watercourses: He turneth it whithersoever he will.

Всякий путь человека прям в глазах его; но Господь взвешивает сердца.

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes; But Jehovah weigheth the hearts.

Соблюдение правды и правосудия более угодно Господу, нежели жертва.

To do righteousness and justice Is more acceptable to Jehovah than sacrifice.

Гордость очей и надменность сердца, отличающие нечестивых, – грех.

A high look, and a proud heart, [Even] the lamp of the wicked, is sin.

Помышления прилежного стремятся к изобилию, а всякий торопливый терпит лишение.

The thoughts of the diligent [tend] only to plenteousness; But every one that is hasty [hasteth] only to want.

Приобретение сокровища лживым языком – мимолетное дуновение ищущих смерти.

The getting of treasures by a lying tongue Is a vapor driven to and fro by them that seek death.

Насилие нечестивых обрушится на них, потому что они отреклись соблюдать правду.

The violence of the wicked shall sweep them away, Because they refuse to do justice.

Превратен путь человека развращенного; а кто чист, того действие прямо.

The way of him that is laden with guilt is exceeding crooked; But as for the pure, his work is right.

Лучше жить в углу на кровле, нежели со сварливою женою в пространном доме.

It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

Душа нечестивого желает зла: не найдет милости в глазах его и друг его.

The soul of the wicked desireth evil: His neighbor findeth no favor in his eyes.

Когда наказывается кощунник, простой делается мудрым; и когда вразумляется мудрый, то он приобретает знание.

When the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise; And when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.

Праведник наблюдает за домом нечестивого: как повергаются нечестивые в несчастие.

The righteous man considereth the house of the wicked, [How] the wicked are overthrown to [their] ruin.

Кто затыкает ухо свое от вопля бедного, тот и сам будет вопить, – и не будет услышан.

Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, He also shall cry, but shall not be heard.

Подарок тайный тушит гнев, и дар в пазуху – сильную ярость.

A gift in secret pacifieth anger; And a present in the bosom, strong wrath.

Соблюдение правосудия – радость для праведника и страх для делающих зло.

It is joy to the righteous to do justice; But it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.

Человек, сбившийся с пути разума, водворится в собрании мертвецов.

The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding Shall rest in the assembly of the dead.

Кто любит веселье, обеднеет; а кто любит вино и тук, не разбогатеет.

He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: He that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.

Выкупом будет за праведного нечестивый и за прямодушного – лукавый.

The wicked is a ransom for the righteous; And the treacherous [cometh] in the stead of the upright.

Лучше жить в земле пустынной, нежели с женою сварливою и сердитою.

It is better to dwell in a desert land, Than with a contentious and fretful woman.

Вожделенное сокровище и тук – в доме мудрого; а глупый человек расточает их.

There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise; But a foolish man swalloweth it up.

Соблюдающий правду и милость найдет жизнь, правду и славу.

He that followeth after righteousness and kindness Findeth life, righteousness, and honor.

Мудрый входит в город сильных и ниспровергает крепость, на которую они надеялись.

A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, And bringeth down the strength of the confidence thereof.

Кто хранит уста свои и язык свой, тот хранит от бед душу свою.

Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue Keepeth his soul from troubles.

Надменный злодей – кощунник имя ему – действует в пылу гордости.

The proud and haughty man, scoffer is his name; He worketh in the arrogance of pride.

Алчба ленивца убьет его, потому что руки его отказываются работать;

The desire of the sluggard killeth him; For his hands refuse to labor.

всякий день он сильно алчет, а праведник дает и не жалеет.

There is that coveteth greedily all the day long; But the righteous giveth and withholdeth not.

Жертва нечестивых – мерзость, особенно когда с лукавством приносят ее.

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination: How much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind!

Лжесвидетель погибнет; а человек, который говорит, что знает, будет говорить всегда.

A false witness shall perish; But the man that heareth shall speak so as to endure.

Человек нечестивый дерзок лицом своим, а праведный держит прямо путь свой.

A wicked man hardeneth his face; But as for the upright, he establisheth his ways.

Нет мудрости, и нет разума, и нет совета вопреки Господу.

There is no wisdom nor understanding Nor counsel against Jehovah.

Коня приготовляют на день битвы, но победа – от Господа.

The horse is prepared against the day of battle; But victory is of Jehovah.

Глава 22

Доброе имя лучше большого богатства, и добрая слава лучше серебра и золота.

A [good] name is rather to be chosen than great riches, [And] loving favor rather than silver and gold.

Богатый и бедный встречаются друг с другом: того и другого создал Господь.

The rich and the poor meet together: Jehovah is the maker of them all.

Благоразумный видит беду, и укрывается; а неопытные идут вперед, и наказываются.

A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; But the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

За смирением следует страх Господень, богатство и слава и жизнь.

The reward of humility [and] the fear of Jehovah [Is] riches, and honor, and life.

Терны и сети на пути коварного; кто бережет душу свою, удались от них.

Thorns [and] snares are in the way of the perverse: He that keepeth his soul shall be far from them.

Наставь юношу при начале пути его: он не уклонится от него, когда и состарится.

Train up a child in the way he should go, And even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Богатый господствует над бедным, и должник [делается] рабом заимодавца.

The rich ruleth over the poor; And the borrower is servant to the lender.

Сеющий неправду пожнет беду, и трости гнева его не станет.

He that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity; And the rod of his wrath shall fail.

Милосердый будет благословляем, потому что дает бедному от хлеба своего.

He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; For he giveth of his bread to the poor.

Прогони кощунника, и удалится раздор, и прекратятся ссора и брань.

Cast out the scoffer, and contention will go out; Yea, strife and ignominy will cease.

Кто любит чистоту сердца, у того приятность на устах, тому царь – друг.

He that loveth pureness of heart, [For] the grace of his lips the king will be his friend.

Очи Господа охраняют знание, а слова законопреступника Он ниспровергает.

The eyes of Jehovah preserve [him that hath] knowledge; But he overthroweth the words of the treacherous man.

Ленивец говорит: "лев на улице! посреди площади убьют меня!"

The sluggard saith, There is a lion without: I shall be slain in the streets.

Глубокая пропасть – уста блудниц: на кого прогневается Господь, тот упадет туда.

The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: He that is abhorred of Jehovah shall fall therein.

Глупость привязалась к сердцу юноши, но исправительная розга удалит ее от него.

Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; [But] the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Кто обижает бедного, чтобы умножить свое богатство, и кто дает богатому, тот обеднеет.

He that oppresseth the poor to increase his [gain], [And] he that giveth to the rich, [shall come] only to want.

Приклони ухо твое, и слушай слова мудрых, и сердце твое обрати к моему знанию;

Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, And apply thy heart unto my knowledge.

потому что утешительно будет, если ты будешь хранить их в сердце твоем, и они будут также в устах твоих.

For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, If they be established together upon thy lips.

Чтобы упование твое было на Господа, я учу тебя и сегодня, и ты [помни].

That thy trust may be in Jehovah, I have made [them] known to thee this day, even to thee.

Не писал ли я тебе трижды в советах и наставлении,

Have not I written unto thee excellent things Of counsels and knowledge,

чтобы научить тебя точным словам истины, дабы ты мог передавать слова истины посылающим тебя?

To make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, That thou mayest carry back words of truth to them that send thee?

Не будь грабителем бедного, потому что он беден, и не притесняй несчастного у ворот,

Rob not the poor, because he is poor; Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

потому что Господь вступится в дело их и исхитит душу у грабителей их.

For Jehovah will plead their cause, And despoil of life those that despoil them.

Не дружись с гневливым и не сообщайся с человеком вспыльчивым,

Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; And with a wrathful man thou shalt not go:

чтобы не научиться путям его и не навлечь петли на душу твою.

Lest thou learn this ways, And get a snare to thy soul.

Не будь из тех, которые дают руки и поручаются за долги:

Be thou not one of them that strike hands, [Or] of them that are sureties for debts.

если тебе нечем заплатить, то для чего доводить себя, чтобы взяли постель твою из–под тебя?

If thou hast not wherewith to pay, Why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

Не передвигай межи давней, которую провели отцы твои.

Remove not the ancient landmark, Which thy fathers have set.

Видел ли ты человека проворного в своем деле? Он будет стоять перед царями, он не будет стоять перед простыми.

Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men.

Глава 23

Когда сядешь вкушать пищу с властелином, то тщательно наблюдай, что перед тобою,

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Consider diligently him that is before thee;

и поставь преграду в гортани твоей, если ты алчен.

And put a knife to thy throat, If thou be a man given to appetite.

Не прельщайся лакомыми яствами его; это – обманчивая пища.

Be not desirous of his dainties; Seeing they are deceitful food.

Не заботься о том, чтобы нажить богатство; оставь такие мысли твои.

Weary not thyself to be rich; Cease from thine own wisdom.

Устремишь глаза твои на него, и – его уже нет; потому что оно сделает себе крылья и, как орел, улетит к небу.

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? For [riches] certainly make themselves wings, Like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.

Не вкушай пищи у человека завистливого и не прельщайся лакомыми яствами его;

Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, Neither desire thou his dainties:

потому что, каковы мысли в душе его, таков и он; "ешь и пей", говорит он тебе, а сердце его не с тобою.

For as he thinketh within himself, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.

Кусок, который ты съел, изблюешь, и добрые слова твои ты потратишь напрасно.

The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, And lose thy sweet words.

В уши глупого не говори, потому что он презрит разумные слова твои.

Speak not in the hearing of a fool; For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

Не передвигай межи давней и на поля сирот не заходи,

Remove not the ancient landmark; And enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

потому что Защитник их силен; Он вступится в дело их с тобою.

For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their cause against thee.

Приложи сердце твое к учению и уши твои – к умным словам.

Apply thy heart unto instruction, And thine ears to the words of knowledge.

Не оставляй юноши без наказания: если накажешь его розгою, он не умрет;

Withhold not correction from the child; [For] if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.

ты накажешь его розгою и спасешь душу его от преисподней.

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, And shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

Сын мой! если сердце твое будет мудро, то порадуется и мое сердце;

My son, if thy heart be wise, My heart will be glad, even mine:

и внутренности мои будут радоваться, когда уста твои будут говорить правое.

Yea, my heart will rejoice, When thy lips speak right things.

Да не завидует сердце твое грешникам, но да пребудет оно во все дни в страхе Господнем;

Let not thy heart envy sinners; But [be thou] in the fear of Jehovah all the day long:

потому что есть будущность, и надежда твоя не потеряна.

For surely there is a reward; And thy hope shall not be cut off.

Слушай, сын мой, и будь мудр, и направляй сердце твое на прямой путь.

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And guide thy heart in the way.

Не будь между упивающимися вином, между пресыщающимися мясом:

Be not among winebibbers, Among gluttonous eaters of flesh:

потому что пьяница и пресыщающийся обеднеют, и сонливость оденет в рубище.

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; And drowsiness will clothe [a man] with rags.

Слушайся отца твоего: он родил тебя; и не пренебрегай матери твоей, когда она и состарится.

Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.

Купи истину и не продавай мудрости и учения и разума.

Buy the truth, and sell it not; [Yea], wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

Торжествует отец праведника, и родивший мудрого радуется о нем.

The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; And he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him.

Да веселится отец твой и да торжествует мать твоя, родившая тебя.

Let thy father and thy mother be glad, And let her that bare thee rejoice.

Сын мой! отдай сердце твое мне, и глаза твои да наблюдают пути мои,

My son, give me thy heart; And let thine eyes delight in my ways.

потому что блудница – глубокая пропасть, и чужая жена – тесный колодезь;

For a harlot is a deep ditch; And a foreign woman is a narrow pit.

она, как разбойник, сидит в засаде и умножает между людьми законопреступников.

Yea, she lieth in wait as a robber, And increaseth the treacherous among men.

У кого вой? у кого стон? у кого ссоры? у кого горе? у кого раны без причины? у кого багровые глаза?

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? Who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?

У тех, которые долго сидят за вином, которые приходят отыскивать [вина] приправленного.

They that tarry long at the wine; They that go to seek out mixed wine.

Не смотри на вино, как оно краснеет, как оно искрится в чаше, как оно ухаживается ровно:

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly:

впоследствии, как змей, оно укусит, и ужалит, как аспид;

At the last it biteth like a serpent, And stingeth like an adder.

глаза твои будут смотреть на чужих жен, и сердце твое заговорит развратное,

Thine eyes shall behold strange things, And thy heart shall utter perverse things.

и ты будешь, как спящий среди моря и как спящий на верху мачты.

Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, Or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

[И скажешь]: "били меня, мне не было больно; толкали меня, я не чувствовал. Когда проснусь, опять буду искать того же".

They have stricken me, [shalt thou say], and I was not hurt; They have beaten me, and I felt it not: When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

Глава 24

Не ревнуй злым людям и не желай быть с ними,

Be not thou envious against evil men; Neither desire to be with them:

потому что о насилии помышляет сердце их, и о злом говорят уста их.

For their heart studieth oppression, And their lips talk of mischief.

Мудростью устрояется дом и разумом утверждается,

Through wisdom is a house builded; And by understanding it is established;

и с уменьем внутренности его наполняются всяким драгоценным и прекрасным имуществом.

And by knowledge are the chambers filled With all precious and pleasant riches.

Человек мудрый силен, и человек разумный укрепляет силу свою.

A wise man is strong; Yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might

Поэтому с обдуманностью веди войну твою, и успех [будет] при множестве совещаний.

For by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war; And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Для глупого слишком высока мудрость; у ворот не откроет он уст своих.

Wisdom is too high for a fool: He openeth not his mouth in the gate.

Кто замышляет сделать зло, того называют злоумышленником.

He that deviseth to do evil, Men shall call him a mischief-maker.

Помысл глупости – грех, и кощунник – мерзость для людей.

The thought of foolishness is sin; And the scoffer is an abomination to men.

Если ты в день бедствия оказался слабым, то бедна сила твоя.

If thou faint in the day of adversity, Thy strength is small.

Спасай взятых на смерть, и неужели откажешься от обреченных на убиение?

Deliver them that are carried away unto death, And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back.

Скажешь ли: "вот, мы не знали этого"? А Испытующий сердца разве не знает? Наблюдающий над душею твоею знает это, и воздаст человеку по делам его.

If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this; Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? And shall not he render to every man according to his work?

Ешь, сын мой, мед, потому что он приятен, и сот, который сладок для гортани твоей:

My son, eat thou honey, for it is good; And the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to thy taste:

таково и познание мудрости для души твоей. Если ты нашел [ее], то есть будущность, и надежда твоя не потеряна.

So shalt thou know wisdom to be unto thy soul; If thou hast found it, then shall there be a reward, And thy hope shall not be cut off.

Не злоумышляй, нечестивый, против жилища праведника, не опустошай места покоя его,

Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous; Destroy not his resting-place:

ибо семь раз упадет праведник, и встанет; а нечестивые впадут в погибель.

For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again; But the wicked are overthrown by calamity.

Не радуйся, когда упадет враг твой, и да не веселится сердце твое, когда он споткнется.

Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown;

Иначе, увидит Господь, и неугодно будет это в очах Его, и Он отвратит от него гнев Свой.

Lest Jehovah see it, and it displease him, And he turn away his wrath from him.

Не негодуй на злодеев и не завидуй нечестивым,

Fret not thyself because of evil-doers; Neither be thou envious at the wicked:

потому что злой не имеет будущности, – светильник нечестивых угаснет.

For there shall be no reward to the evil man; The lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

Бойся, сын мой, Господа и царя; с мятежниками не сообщайся,

My son, fear thou Jehovah and the king; [And] company not with them that are given to change:

потому что внезапно придет погибель от них, и беду от них обоих кто предузнает?

For their calamity shall rise suddenly; And the destruction from them both, who knoweth it?

Сказано также мудрыми: иметь лицеприятие на суде – нехорошо.

These also are [sayings] of the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.

Кто говорит виновному: "ты прав", того будут проклинать народы, того будут ненавидеть племена;

He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him:

а обличающие будут любимы, и на них придет благословение.

But to them that rebuke [him] shall be delight, And a good blessing shall come upon them.

В уста целует, кто отвечает словами верными.

He kisseth the lips Who giveth a right answer.

Соверши дела твои вне дома, окончи их на поле твоем, и потом устрояй и дом твой.

Prepare thy work without, And make it ready for thee in the field; And afterwards build thy house.

Не будь лжесвидетелем на ближнего твоего: к чему тебе обманывать устами твоими?

Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause; And deceive not with thy lips.

Не говори: "как он поступил со мною, так и я поступлю с ним, воздам человеку по делам его".

Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.

Проходил я мимо поля человека ленивого и мимо виноградника человека скудоумного:

I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

и вот, все это заросло терном, поверхность его покрылась крапивою, и каменная ограда его обрушилась.

And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, The face thereof was covered with nettles, And the stone wall thereof was broken down.

И посмотрел я, и обратил сердце мое, и посмотрел и получил урок:

Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction:

"немного поспишь, немного подремлешь, немного, сложив руки, полежишь, –

[Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep;

и придет, [как] прохожий, бедность твоя, и нужда твоя – как человек вооруженный".

So shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man.

Глава 25

И это притчи Соломона, которые собрали мужи Езекии, царя Иудейского.

These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

Слава Божия – облекать тайною дело, а слава царей – исследывать дело.

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

Как небо в высоте и земля в глубине, так сердце царей – неисследимо.

As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable.

Отдели примесь от серебра, и выйдет у серебряника сосуд:

Take away the dross from the silver, And there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner:

удали неправедного от царя, и престол его утвердится правдою.

Take away the wicked [from] before the king, And his throne shall be established in righteousness.

Не величайся пред лицем царя, и на месте великих не становись;

Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, And stand not in the place of great men:

потому что лучше, когда скажут тебе: "пойди сюда повыше", нежели когда понизят тебя пред знатным, которого видели глаза твои.

For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, Than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom thine eyes have seen.

Не вступай поспешно в тяжбу: иначе что будешь делать при окончании, когда соперник твой осрамит тебя?

Go not forth hastily to strive, Lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof, When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.

Веди тяжбу с соперником твоим, но тайны другого не открывай,

Debate thy cause with thy neighbor [himself], And disclose not the secret of another;

дабы не укорил тебя услышавший это, и тогда бесчестие твое не отойдет от тебя.

Lest he that heareth it revile thee, And thine infamy turn not away.

Золотые яблоки в серебряных прозрачных сосудах – слово, сказанное прилично.

A word fitly spoken Is [like] apples of gold in network of silver.

Золотая серьга и украшение из чистого золота – мудрый обличитель для внимательного уха.

[As] an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, [So is] a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

Что прохлада от снега во время жатвы, то верный посол для посылающего его: он доставляет душе господина своего отраду.

As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, [So is] a faithful messenger to them that send him; For he refresheth the soul of his masters.

Что тучи и ветры без дождя, то человек, хвастающий ложными подарками.

[As] clouds and wind without rain, [So is] he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely.

Кротостью склоняется к милости вельможа, и мягкий язык переламывает кость.

By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

Нашел ты мед, – ешь, сколько тебе потребно, чтобы не пресытиться им и не изблевать его.

Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

Не учащай входить в дом друга твоего, чтобы он не наскучил тобою и не возненавидел тебя.

Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor`s house, Lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.

Что молот и меч и острая стрела, то человек, произносящий ложное свидетельство против ближнего своего.

A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

Что сломанный зуб и расслабленная нога, то надежда на ненадежного [человека] в день бедствия.

Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is [like] a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.

Что снимающий с себя одежду в холодный день, что уксус на рану, то поющий песни печальному сердцу.

[As] one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, [and as] vinegar upon soda, So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.

Если голоден враг твой, накорми его хлебом; и если он жаждет, напой его водою:

If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

ибо, [делая сие], ты собираешь горящие угли на голову его, и Господь воздаст тебе.

For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, And Jehovah will reward thee.

Северный ветер производит дождь, а тайный язык – недовольные лица.

The north wind bringeth forth rain: So doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

Лучше жить в углу на кровле, нежели со сварливою женою в пространном доме.

It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

Что холодная вода для истомленной жаждой души, то добрая весть из дальней страны.

[As] cold waters to a thirsty soul, So is good news from a far country.

Что возмущенный источник и поврежденный родник, то праведник, падающий пред нечестивым.

[As] a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, [So is] a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.

Как нехорошо есть много меду, так домогаться славы не есть слава.

It is not good to eat much honey: So [for men] to search out their own glory is grievous.

Что город разрушенный, без стен, то человек, не владеющий духом своим.

He whose spirit is without restraint Is [like] a city that is broken down and without walls.

Глава 26

Как снег летом и дождь во время жатвы, так честь неприлична глупому.

As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, So honor is not seemly for a fool.

Как воробей вспорхнет, как ласточка улетит, так незаслуженное проклятие не сбудется.

As the sparrow in her wandering, as the swallow in her flying, So the curse that is causeless alighteth not.

Бич для коня, узда для осла, а палка для глупых.

A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, And a rod for the back of fools.

Не отвечай глупому по глупости его, чтобы и тебе не сделаться подобным ему;

Answer not a fool according to his folly, Lest thou also be like unto him.

но отвечай глупому по глупости его, чтобы он не стал мудрецом в глазах своих.

Answer a fool according to his folly, Lest he be wise in his own conceit.

Подрезывает себе ноги, терпит неприятность тот, кто дает словесное поручение глупцу.

He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool Cutteth off [his own] feet, [and] drinketh in damage.

Неровно поднимаются ноги у хромого, – и притча в устах глупцов.

The legs of the lame hang loose: So is a parable in the mouth of fools.

Что влагающий драгоценный камень в пращу, то воздающий глупому честь.

As one that bindeth a stone in a sling, So is he that giveth honor to a fool.

Что [колючий] терн в руке пьяного, то притча в устах глупцов.

[As] a thorn that goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, So is a parable in the mouth of fools.

Сильный делает все произвольно: и глупого награждает, и всякого прохожего награждает.

[As] an archer that woundeth all, So is he that hireth a fool and he that hireth them that pass by.

Как пес возвращается на блевотину свою, так глупый повторяет глупость свою.

As a dog that returneth to his vomit, [So is] a fool that repeateth his folly.

Видал ли ты человека, мудрого в глазах его? На глупого больше надежды, нежели на него.

Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? There is more hope of a fool than of him.

Ленивец говорит: "лев на дороге! лев на площадях!"

The sluggard saith, There is a lion in the way; A lion is in the streets.

Дверь ворочается на крючьях своих, а ленивец на постели своей.

[As] the door turneth upon its hinges, So doth the sluggard upon his bed.

Ленивец опускает руку свою в чашу, и ему тяжело донести ее до рта своего.

The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish; It wearieth him to bring it again to his mouth.

Ленивец в глазах своих мудрее семерых, отвечающих обдуманно.

The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit Than seven men that can render a reason.

Хватает пса за уши, кто, проходя мимо, вмешивается в чужую ссору.

He that passeth by, [and] vexeth himself with strife belonging not to him, Is [like] one that taketh a dog by the ears.

Как притворяющийся помешанным бросает огонь, стрелы и смерть,

As a madman who casteth firebrands, Arrows, and death,

так – человек, который коварно вредит другу своему и потом говорит: "я только пошутил".

So is the man that deceiveth his neighbor, And saith, Am not I in sport?

Где нет больше дров, огонь погасает, и где нет наушника, раздор утихает.

For lack of wood the fire goeth out; And where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth.

Уголь – для жара и дрова – для огня, а человек сварливый – для разжжения ссоры.

[As] coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to inflame strife.

Слова наушника – как лакомства, и они входят во внутренность чрева.

The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts.

Что нечистым серебром обложенный глиняный сосуд, то пламенные уста и сердце злобное.

Fervent lips and a wicked heart Are [like] an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.

Устами своими притворяется враг, а в сердце своем замышляет коварство.

He that hateth dissembleth with his lips; But he layeth up deceit within him:

Если он говорит и нежным голосом, не верь ему, потому что семь мерзостей в сердце его.

When he speaketh fair, believe him not; For there are seven abominations in his heart:

Если ненависть прикрывается наедине, то откроется злоба его в народном собрании.

Though [his] hatred cover itself with guile, His wickedness shall be openly showed before the assembly.

Кто роет яму, тот упадет в нее, и кто покатит вверх камень, к тому он воротится.

Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein; And he that rolleth a stone, it shall return upon him.

Лживый язык ненавидит уязвляемых им, и льстивые уста готовят падение.

A lying tongue hateth those whom it hath wounded; And a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

Глава 27

Не хвались завтрашним днем, потому что не знаешь, что родит тот день.

Boast not thyself of tomorrow; For thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

Пусть хвалит тебя другой, а не уста твои, – чужой, а не язык твой.

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; A stranger, and not thine own lips.

Тяжел камень, весок и песок; но гнев глупца тяжелее их обоих.

A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; But a fool`s vexation is heavier than they both.

Жесток гнев, неукротима ярость; но кто устоит против ревности?

Wrath is cruel, and anger is overwhelming; But who is able to stand before jealousy?

Лучше открытое обличение, нежели скрытая любовь.

Better is open rebuke Than love that is hidden.

Искренни укоризны от любящего, и лживы поцелуи ненавидящего.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; But the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

Сытая душа попирает и сот, а голодной душе все горькое сладко.

The full soul loatheth a honeycomb; But to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

Как птица, покинувшая гнездо свое, так человек, покинувший место свое.

As a bird that wandereth from her nest, So is a man that wandereth from his place.

Масть и курение радуют сердце; так сладок [всякому] друг сердечным советом своим.

Oil and perfume rejoice the heart; So doth the sweetness of a man`s friend [that cometh] of hearty counsel.

Не покидай друга твоего и друга отца твоего, и в дом брата твоего не ходи в день несчастья твоего: лучше сосед вблизи, нежели брат вдали.

Thine own friend, and thy father`s friend, forsake not; And go not to thy brother`s house in the day of thy calamity: Better is a neighbor that is near than a brother far off.

Будь мудр, сын мой, и радуй сердце мое; и я буду иметь, что отвечать злословящему меня.

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, That I may answer him that reproacheth me.

Благоразумный видит беду и укрывается; а неопытные идут вперед [и] наказываются.

A prudent man seeth the evil, [and] hideth himself; [But] the simple pass on, [and] suffer for it.

Возьми у него платье его, потому что он поручился за чужого, и за стороннего возьми от него залог.

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; And hold him in pledge [that is surety] for a foreign woman.

Кто громко хвалит друга своего с раннего утра, того сочтут за злословящего.

He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, It shall be counted a curse to him.

Непрестанная капель в дождливый день и сварливая жена – равны:

A continual dropping in a very rainy day And a contentious woman are alike:

кто хочет скрыть ее, тот хочет скрыть ветер и масть в правой руке своей, дающую знать о себе.

He that would restrain her restraineth the wind; And his right hand encountereth oil.

Железо железо острит, и человек изощряет взгляд друга своего.

Iron sharpeneth iron; So a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

Кто стережет смоковницу, тот будет есть плоды ее; и кто бережет господина своего, тот будет в чести.

Whoso keepeth the fig-tree shall eat the fruit thereof; And he that regardeth his master shall be honored.

Как в воде лицо – к лицу, так сердце человека – к человеку.

As in water face [answereth] to face, So the heart of man to man.

Преисподняя и Аваддон – ненасытимы; так ненасытимы и глаза человеческие.

Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied; And the eyes of man are never satisfied.

Что плавильня – для серебра, горнило – для золота, то для человека уста, которые хвалят его.

The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; And a man is [tried] by his praise.

Толки глупого в ступе пестом вместе с зерном, не отделится от него глупость его.

Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with bruised grain, Yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

Хорошо наблюдай за скотом твоим, имей попечение о стадах;

Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, [And] look well to thy herds:

потому что богатство не навек, да и власть разве из рода в род?

For riches are not for ever: And doth the crown endure unto all generations?

Прозябает трава, и является зелень, и собирают горные травы.

The hay is carried, and the tender grass showeth itself, And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in.

Овцы – на одежду тебе, и козлы – на покупку поля.

The lambs are for thy clothing, And the goats are the price of the field;

И довольно козьего молока в пищу тебе, в пищу домашним твоим и на продовольствие служанкам твоим.

And [there will be] goats` milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, And maintenance for thy maidens.

Глава 28

Нечестивый бежит, когда никто не гонится [за ним]; а праведник смел, как лев.

The wicked flee when no man pursueth; But the righteous are bold as a lion.

Когда страна отступит от закона, тогда много в ней начальников; а при разумном и знающем муже она долговечна.

For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof; But by men of understanding [and] knowledge the state [thereof] shall be prolonged.

Человек бедный и притесняющий слабых [то же, что] проливной дождь, смывающий хлеб.

A needy man that oppresseth the poor Is [like] a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.

Отступники от закона хвалят нечестивых, а соблюдающие закон негодуют на них.

They that forsake the law praise the wicked; But such as keep the law contend with them.

Злые люди не разумеют справедливости, а ищущие Господа разумеют все.

Evil men understand not justice; But they that seek Jehovah understand all things.

Лучше бедный, ходящий в своей непорочности, нежели тот, кто извращает пути свои, хотя он и богат.

Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, Than he that is perverse in [his] ways, though he be rich.

Хранящий закон – сын разумный, а знающийся с расточителями срамит отца своего.

Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son; But he that is a companion of gluttons shameth his father.

Умножающий имение свое ростом и лихвою соберет его для благотворителя бедных.

He that augmenteth his substance by interest and increase, Gathereth it for him that hath pity on the poor.

Кто отклоняет ухо свое от слушания закона, того и молитва – мерзость.

He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, Even his prayer is an abomination.

Совращающий праведных на путь зла сам упадет в свою яму, а непорочные наследуют добро.

Whoso causeth the upright to go astray in an evil way, He shall fall himself into his own pit; But the perfect shall inherit good.

Человек богатый – мудрец в глазах своих, но умный бедняк обличит его.

The rich man is wise in his own conceit; But the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out.

Когда торжествуют праведники, великая слава, но когда возвышаются нечестивые, люди укрываются.

When the righteous triumph, there is great glory; But when the wicked rise, men hide themselves.

Скрывающий свои преступления не будет иметь успеха; а кто сознается и оставляет их, тот будет помилован.

He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper: But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy.

Блажен человек, который всегда пребывает в благоговении; а кто ожесточает сердце свое, тот попадет в беду.

Happy is the man that feareth alway; But he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.

Как рыкающий лев и голодный медведь, так нечестивый властелин над бедным народом.

[As] a roaring lion, and a ranging bear, [So is] a wicked ruler over a poor people.

Неразумный правитель много делает притеснений, а ненавидящий корысть продолжит дни.

The prince that lacketh understanding is also a great oppressor; [But] he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.

Человек, виновный в пролитии человеческой крови, будет бегать до могилы, чтобы кто не схватил его.

A man that is laden with the blood of any person Shall flee unto the pit; let no man stay him.

Кто ходит непорочно, то будет невредим; а ходящий кривыми путями упадет на одном из них.

Whoso walketh uprightly shall be delivered; But he that is perverse in [his] ways shall fall at once.

Кто возделывает землю свою, тот будет насыщаться хлебом, а кто подражает праздным, тот насытится нищетою.

He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread; But he that followeth after vain [persons] shall have poverty enough.

Верный человек богат благословениями, а кто спешит разбогатеть, тот не останется ненаказанным.

A faithful man shall abound with blessings; But he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be unpunished.

Быть лицеприятным – нехорошо: такой человек и за кусок хлеба сделает неправду.

To have respect of persons is not good; Neither that a man should transgress for a piece of bread.

Спешит к богатству завистливый человек, и не думает, что нищета постигнет его.

he that hath an evil eye hasteth after riches, And knoweth not that want shall come upon him.

Обличающий человека найдет после большую приязнь, нежели тот, кто льстит языком.

He that rebuketh a man shall afterward find more favor Than he that flattereth with the tongue.

Кто обкрадывает отца своего и мать свою и говорит: "это не грех", тот – сообщник грабителям.

Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression, The same is the companion of a destroyer.

Надменный разжигает ссору, а надеющийся на Господа будет благоденствовать.

He that is of a greedy spirit stirreth up strife; But he that putteth his trust in Jehovah shall be made fat.

Кто надеется на себя, тот глуп; а кто ходит в мудрости, тот будет цел.

He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool; But whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

Дающий нищему не обеднеет; а кто закрывает глаза свои от него, на том много проклятий.

He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack; But he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.

Когда возвышаются нечестивые, люди укрываются, а когда они падают, умножаются праведники.

When the wicked rise, men hide themselves; But when they perish, the righteous increase.

Глава 29

Человек, который, будучи обличаем, ожесточает выю свою, внезапно сокрушится, и не будет [ему] исцеления.

He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck Shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

Когда умножаются праведники, веселится народ, а когда господствует нечестивый, народ стенает.

When the righteous are increased, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man beareth rule, the people sigh.

Человек, любящий мудрость, радует отца своего; а кто знается с блудницами, тот расточает имение.

Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father; But he that keepeth company with harlots wasteth [his] substance.

Царь правосудием утверждает землю, а любящий подарки разоряет ее.

The king by justice establisheth the land; But he that exacteth gifts overthroweth it.

Человек, льстящий другу своему, расстилает сеть ногам его.

A man that flattereth his neighbor Spreadeth a net for his steps.

В грехе злого человека – сеть [для него], а праведник веселится и радуется.

In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare; But the righteous doth sing and rejoice.

Праведник тщательно вникает в тяжбу бедных, а нечестивый не разбирает дела.

The righteous taketh knowledge of the cause of the poor; The wicked hath not understanding to know [it].

Люди развратные возмущают город, а мудрые утишают мятеж.

Scoffers set a city in a flame; But wise men turn away wrath.

Умный человек, судясь с человеком глупым, сердится ли, смеется ли, – не имеет покоя.

If a wise man hath a controversy with a foolish man, Whether he be angry or laugh, there will be no rest.

Кровожадные люди ненавидят непорочного, а праведные заботятся о его жизни.

The bloodthirsty hate him that is perfect; And as for the upright, they seek his life.

Глупый весь гнев свой изливает, а мудрый сдерживает его.

A fool uttereth all his anger; But a wise man keepeth it back and stilleth it.

Если правитель слушает ложные речи, то и все служащие у него нечестивы.

If a ruler hearkeneth to falsehood, All his servants are wicked.

Бедный и лихоимец встречаются друг с другом; но свет глазам того и другого дает Господь.

The poor man and the oppressor meet together; Jehovah lighteneth the eyes of them both.

Если царь судит бедных по правде, то престол его навсегда утвердится.

The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, His throne shall be established for ever.

Розга и обличение дают мудрость; но отрок, оставленный в небрежении, делает стыд своей матери.

The rod and reproof give wisdom; But a child left to himself causeth shame to his mother.

При умножении нечестивых умножается беззаконие; но праведники увидят падение их.

When the wicked are increased, transgression increaseth; But the righteous shall look upon their fall.

Наказывай сына твоего, и он даст тебе покой, и доставит радость душе твоей.

Correct thy son, and he will give thee rest; Yea, he will give delight unto thy soul.

Без откровения свыше народ необуздан, а соблюдающий закон блажен.

Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; But he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

Словами не научится раб, потому что, хотя он понимает [их], но не слушается.

A servant will not be corrected by words; For though he understand, he will not give heed.

Видал ли ты человека опрометчивого в словах своих? на глупого больше надежды, нежели на него.

Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? There is more hope of a fool than of him.

Если с детства воспитывать раба в неге, то впоследствии он захочет быть сыном.

He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child Shall have him become a son at the last.

Человек гневливый заводит ссору, и вспыльчивый много грешит.

An angry man stirreth up strife, And a wrathful man aboundeth in transgression.

Гордость человека унижает его, а смиренный духом приобретает честь.

A man`s pride shall bring him low; But he that is of a lowly spirit shall obtain honor.

Кто делится с вором, тот ненавидит душу свою; слышит он проклятие, но не объявляет о том.

Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul; He heareth the adjuration and uttereth nothing.

Боязнь пред людьми ставит сеть; а надеющийся на Господа будет безопасен.

The fear of man bringeth a snare; But whoso putteth his trust in Jehovah shall be safe.

Многие ищут [благосклонного] лица правителя, но судьба человека – от Господа.

Many seek the ruler`s favor; But a man`s judgment [cometh] from Jehovah.

Мерзость для праведников – человек неправедный, и мерзость для нечестивого – идущий прямым путем.

An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous; And he that is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.

Глава 30

Слова Агура, сына Иакеева. Вдохновенные изречения, [которые] сказал этот человек Ифиилу, Ифиилу и Укалу:

The words of Agur the son of Jakeh; The oracle. The man saith unto Ithiel, unto Ithiel and Ucal:

подлинно, я более невежда, нежели кто–либо из людей, и разума человеческого нет у меня,

Surely I am more brutish than any man, And have not the understanding of a man;

и не научился я мудрости, и познания святых не имею.

And I have not learned wisdom, Neither have I the knowledge of the Holy One.

Кто восходил на небо и нисходил? кто собрал ветер в пригоршни свои? кто завязал воду в одежду? кто поставил все пределы земли? какое имя ему? и какое имя сыну его? знаешь ли?

Who hath ascended up into heaven, and descended? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound the waters in his garment? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son`s name, if thou knowest?

Всякое слово Бога чисто; Он – щит уповающим на Него.

Every word of God is tried: He is a shield unto them that take refuge in him.

Не прибавляй к словам Его, чтобы Он не обличил тебя, и ты не оказался лжецом.

Add thou not unto his words, Lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Двух вещей я прошу у Тебя, не откажи мне, прежде нежели я умру:

Two things have I asked of thee; Deny me [them] not before I die:

суету и ложь удали от меня, нищеты и богатства не давай мне, питай меня насущным хлебом,

Remove far from me falsehood and lies; Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is needful for me:

дабы, пресытившись, я не отрекся [Тебя] и не сказал: "кто Господь?" и чтобы, обеднев, не стал красть и употреблять имя Бога моего всуе.

Lest I be full, and deny [thee], and say, Who is Jehovah? Or lest I be poor, and steal, And use profanely the name of my God.

Не злословь раба пред господином его, чтобы он не проклял тебя, и ты не остался виноватым.

Slander not a servant unto his master, Lest he curse thee, and thou be held guilty.

Есть род, который проклинает отца своего и не благословляет матери своей.

There is a generation that curse their father, And bless not their mother.

Есть род, который чист в глазах своих, тогда как не омыт от нечистот своих.

There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, And [yet] are not washed from their filthiness.

Есть род – о, как высокомерны глаза его, и как подняты ресницы его!

There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids are lifted up.

Есть род, у которого зубы – мечи, и челюсти – ножи, чтобы пожирать бедных на земле и нищих между людьми.

There is a generation whose teeth are [as] swords, and their jaw teeth [as] knives, To devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

У ненасытимости две дочери: "давай, давай!" Вот три ненасытимых, и четыре, которые не скажут: "довольно!"

The horseleach hath two daughters, [crying], Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, [Yea], four that say not, Enough:

Преисподняя и утроба бесплодная, земля, которая не насыщается водою, и огонь, который не говорит: "довольно!"

Sheol; and the barren womb; The earth that is not satisfied with water; And the fire that saith not, Enough.

Глаз, насмехающийся над отцом и пренебрегающий покорностью к матери, выклюют вороны дольные, и сожрут птенцы орлиные!

The eye that mocketh at his father, And despiseth to obey his mother, The ravens of the valley shall pick it out, And the young eagles shall eat it.

Три вещи непостижимы для меня, и четырех я не понимаю:

There are three things which are too wonderful for me, Yea, four which I know not:

пути орла на небе, пути змея на скале, пути корабля среди моря и пути мужчины к девице.

The way of an eagle in the air; The way of a serpent upon a rock; The way of a ship in the midst of the sea; And the way of a man with a maiden.

Таков путь и жены прелюбодейной; поела и обтерла рот свой, и говорит: "я ничего худого не сделала".

So is the way of an adulterous woman; She eateth, and wipeth her mouth, And saith, I have done no wickedness.

От трех трясется земля, четырех она не может носить:

For three things the earth doth tremble, And for four, [which] it cannot bear:

раба, когда он делается царем; глупого, когда он досыта ест хлеб;

For a servant when he is king; And a fool when he is filled with food;

позорную женщину, когда она выходит замуж, и служанку, когда она занимает место госпожи своей.

For an odious woman when she is married; And a handmaid that is heir to her mistress.

Вот четыре малых на земле, но они мудрее мудрых:

There are four things which are little upon the earth, But they are exceeding wise:

муравьи – народ не сильный, но летом заготовляют пищу свою;

The ants are a people not strong, Yet they provide their food in the summer;

горные мыши – народ слабый, но ставят домы свои на скале;

The conies are but a feeble folk, Yet make they their houses in the rocks;

у саранчи нет царя, но выступает вся она стройно;

The locusts have no king, Yet go they forth all of them by bands;

паук лапками цепляется, но бывает в царских чертогах.

The lizard taketh hold with her hands, Yet is she in kings` palaces.

Вот трое имеют стройную походку, и четверо стройно выступают:

There are three things which are stately in their march, Yea, four which are stately in going:

лев, силач между зверями, не посторонится ни перед кем;

The lion, which is mightiest among beasts, And turneth not away for any;

конь и козел, и царь среди народа своего.

The greyhound; the he-goat also; And the king against whom there is no rising up.

Если ты в заносчивости своей сделал глупость и помыслил злое, то [положи] руку на уста;

If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, Or if thou hast thought evil, [Lay] thy hand upon thy mouth.

потому что, как сбивание молока производит масло, толчок в нос производит кровь, так и возбуждение гнева производит ссору.

For the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, And the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood; So the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.

Глава 31

Слова Лемуила царя. Наставление, которое преподала ему мать его:

The words of king Lemuel; the oracle which his mother taught him.

что, сын мой? что, сын чрева моего? что, сын обетов моих?

What, my son? and what, O son of my womb? And what, O son of my vows?

Не отдавай женщинам сил твоих, ни путей твоих губительницам царей.

Give not thy strength unto women, Nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

Не царям, Лемуил, не царям пить вино, и не князьям – сикеру,

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; Nor for princes [to say], Where is strong drink?

чтобы, напившись, они не забыли закона и не превратили суда всех угнетаемых.

Lest they drink, and forget the law, And pervert the justice [due] to any that is afflicted.

Дайте сикеру погибающему и вино огорченному душею;

Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, And wine unto the bitter in soul:

пусть он выпьет и забудет бедность свою и не вспомнит больше о своем страдании.

Let him drink, and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more.

Открывай уста твои за безгласного и для защиты всех сирот.

Open thy mouth for the dumb, In the cause of all such as are left desolate.

Открывай уста твои для правосудия и для дела бедного и нищего.

Open thy mouth, judge righteously, And minister justice to the poor and needy.

Кто найдет добродетельную жену? цена ее выше жемчугов;

A worthy woman who can find? For her price is far above rubies.

уверено в ней сердце мужа ее, и он не останется без прибытка;

The heart of her husband trusteth in her, And he shall have no lack of gain.

она воздает ему добром, а не злом, во все дни жизни своей.

She doeth him good and not evil All the days of her life.

Добывает шерсть и лен, и с охотою работает своими руками.

She seeketh wool and flax, And worketh willingly with her hands.

Она, как купеческие корабли, издалека добывает хлеб свой.

She is like the merchant-ships; She bringeth her bread from afar.

Она встает еще ночью и раздает пищу в доме своем и урочное служанкам своим.

She riseth also while it is yet night, And giveth food to her household, And their task to her maidens.

Задумает она о поле, и приобретает его; от плодов рук своих насаждает виноградник.

She considereth a field, and buyeth it; With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

Препоясывает силою чресла свои и укрепляет мышцы свои.

She girdeth her loins with strength, And maketh strong her arms.

Она чувствует, что занятие ее хорошо, и – светильник ее не гаснет и ночью.

She perceiveth that her merchandise is profitable: Her lamp goeth not out by night.

Протягивает руки свои к прялке, и персты ее берутся за веретено.

She layeth her hands to the distaff, And her hands hold the spindle.

Длань свою она открывает бедному, и руку свою подает нуждающемуся.

She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

Не боится стужи для семьи своей, потому что вся семья ее одета в двойные одежды.

She is not afraid of the snow for her household; For all her household are clothed with scarlet.

Она делает себе ковры; виссон и пурпур – одежда ее.

She maketh for herself carpets of tapestry; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.

Муж ее известен у ворот, когда сидит со старейшинами земли.

Her husband is known in the gates, When he sitteth among the elders of the land.

Она делает покрывала и продает, и поясы доставляет купцам Финикийским.

She maketh linen garments and selleth them, And delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

Крепость и красота – одежда ее, и весело смотрит она на будущее.

Strength and dignity are her clothing; And she laugheth at the time to come.

Уста свои открывает с мудростью, и кроткое наставление на языке ее.

She openeth her mouth with wisdom; And the law of kindness is on her tongue.

Она наблюдает за хозяйством в доме своем и не ест хлеба праздности.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, And eateth not the bread of idleness.

Встают дети и ублажают ее, – муж, и хвалит ее:

Her children rise up, and call her blessed; Her husband [also], and he praiseth her, [saying]:

"много было жен добродетельных, но ты превзошла всех их".

Many daughters have done worthily, But thou excellest them all.

Миловидность обманчива и красота суетна; но жена, боящаяся Господа, достойна хвалы.

Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain; [But] a woman that feareth Jehovah, she shall be praised.

Дайте ей от плода рук ее, и да прославят ее у ворот дела ее!

Give her of the fruit of her hands; And let her works praise her in the gates.
