The Signature and the Designers

At the 2008 premiere of a documentary about the persecution of design theorists, Richard Dawkins said on camera that life on Earth might have been engineered by an advanced civilization elsewhere in the cosmos — that you might, if you looked, find in the cell 'a signature of some sort of a designer' — and then took it back, because the designer would have had to evolve. Watching from the audience was Stephen Meyer, then finishing a book called Signature in the Cell. This Explainer uses that scene to take apart the most interesting move in the whole Intelligent Design debate. It maps the full spectrum of modern design and creation thought — young-earth 'scientific creationism' and its documentaries, old-earth progressive creationism, the information-theoretic Intelligent Design of Behe, Dembski and Meyer, the bench-level origin-of-life skepticism of the synthetic chemist James Tour, the theistic evolution of Miller and Collins, and the flat anti-design of Dawkins — and finds, with the sociologist George Chryssides, that the Raëlian account of human origins is itself a species of 'scientific creationism,' sharing the design intuition while diverging on nearly everything else. It then examines, at length, the passage in Meyer's Return of the God Hypothesis where he considers and dismisses the extraterrestrial-engineering hypothesis — the 'panspermia' or 'immanent intelligence' option — and argues that his dismissal, far from shallow, is a real and careful argument that nonetheless fails against this particular target, because it silently promotes a hypothesis about terrestrial biology into a theory of the cosmos, and because its load-bearing premise — a universe with a beginning, whose fine-tuning had to be set at that beginning — is exactly the premise the canon denies. The Elohim hypothesis turns out to be the position both the arch-atheist and the arch-theist need to make disappear, because it dissolves the God-versus-materialism binary their whole quarrel is built on. The signature is real. The dispute is over whose hand.

On opening night in 2008, at the premiere of a documentary about scientists who had lost their jobs for taking design seriously, the most famous atheist alive was asked, on camera, whether intelligent design might after all turn out to explain something in biology. Richard Dawkins did not laugh the question off. He answered it.

It could be that at some earlier time somewhere in the universe a civilization evolved by probably some type of Darwinian means to a very, very high level of technology and designed a form of life that they seeded onto, perhaps, this planet. Now that is a possibility, and an intriguing possibility, and I suppose it's possible that you might find evidence for that; if you looked at the details of biochemistry and molecular biology you might find a signature of some sort of a designer.

The film was Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed[a], and the answer was a small sensation, because Dawkins had just conceded, in his own voice, that life on Earth might have been engineered — deliberately made by prior intelligent beings and delivered here — and that the fact might be detectable, written into the molecules, a "signature of some sort of a designer." He recovered his footing at once. Whatever that higher intelligence was, he added, it "would itself have had to have come about by some explicable or ultimately explicable process" — by which he meant a process with no designer at the bottom of it. The concession was real, and so was the retraction, and they were separated by a single breath.

Sitting in the audience that night, also interviewed for the film, was a philosopher of science named Stephen Meyer. He was, at that moment, finishing a book about exactly the thing Dawkins had just named. It would be published the next year and it would be called Signature in the Cell. Its argument was that the specified information in DNA is precisely the signature Dawkins had gestured at — and that it points not to an alien engineer but to a mind outside the universe altogether. Twelve years later, in a bigger book, Meyer would come back to Dawkins's alien and explain, carefully and at length, why the engineered-by-a-prior-civilization hypothesis has to be wrong.

Two of the most consequential thinkers in the science-and-religion argument of our time, in one room, circling the same possibility and fleeing it in opposite directions. Dawkins reached the idea that life was designed by an evolved civilization and recoiled because it was still design. Meyer reached the idea that life was designed and recoiled because the designer was merely a civilization. Between the two recoils there is a position that neither man will stand on, and it is the position this article is about — the one the Raëlian canon has occupied, without apology, since 1974: that life on Earth was engineered by an advanced but entirely physical people, the Elohim , who were themselves engineered by an earlier people, in a chain with no first link and no God at the top. The signature is real. The whole quarrel is over whose hand left it.

A family of dissents

To see why that position is interesting, you have to first clear away a confusion that the public argument almost never clears away — the habit of treating "creationism," "intelligent design," and "doubt about Darwin" as a single lump. They are not one thing. They are a family, and the members of a family quarrel. Laid out honestly, the modern dissent from undirected evolution is a spectrum, and the Wheel of Heaven reading sits at a specific and unexpected point on it.

At one end stands scientific creationism in its original and strict sense: the young-earth position that Genesis is literal natural history, that the Earth is some thousands of years old, that the fossil-bearing rock was laid down by Noah's Flood, and that this can be defended as science. Its founding document is The Genesis Flood (1961), by the theologian John Whitcomb and the hydraulic engineer Henry Morris, and its manifesto is Morris's Scientific Creationism (1974). It is a living tradition, and it makes real documentaries with real production values — most successfully Is Genesis History? (2017). Its distinguishing feature is that it takes the age of the Earth as a battlefield.

Next along the spectrum is old-earth, or progressive, creationism, whose ablest contemporary voice is the astronomer Hugh Ross. Ross accepts the deep time of mainstream cosmology and geology — the 13.8-billion-year universe, the 4.5-billion-year Earth — and reads the "days" of Genesis as long ages, while insisting that God intervened repeatedly to create new forms. This branch surrenders the age of the Earth and fights on the design of it.

Then comes Intelligent Design proper — the movement, born around 1991, that is careful to make neither a young-earth nor even an explicitly biblical claim. Its foundational text is the Berkeley law professor Phillip Johnson's Darwin on Trial (1991), which reframed Darwinism as a contestable worldview rather than a settled result. Its arguments are three, and they are built to be usable by a scientist who accepts every date in the geology textbook: the irreducible complexity of molecular machines (Michael Behe, Darwin's Black Box, 1996), the specified complexity that Behe's machines display (William Dembski, The Design Inference, 1998), and the origin of the information in the genetic code (Stephen Meyer, Signature in the Cell, 2009). Around these cluster the fine-tuning argument — that the constants of physics are calibrated for life — and its most elegant statement, The Privileged Planet (2004) by the astronomer Guillermo Gonzalez and the philosopher Jay Richards.

Adjacent to the movement, but not quite of it, stands the origin-of-life skeptic, whose purest example is the Rice University synthetic chemist James Tour. Tour is not arguing for a designer; he is arguing that the chemists who claim to be closing in on a naturalistic origin of life are overselling a case they cannot cash. His is a claim about the state of the laboratory, and it is worth taking on its own terms.

Farther along, the spectrum crosses the line into people who accept evolution entirely. Theistic evolution, or evolutionary creation, is the position of the cell biologist Kenneth Miller (Finding Darwin's God, 1999) and the geneticist Francis Collins (The Language of God, 2006, and the BioLogos foundation he built) — Christians who hold that undirected evolution is true and that God is its author, working through the laws rather than around them. They are, notably, among Intelligent Design's most effective critics: Miller's courtroom demolition of Behe's flagellum is the single most cited rebuttal in the field.

And at the far end stands Richard Dawkins, and the flat denial of any design at all: The Blind Watchmaker (1986), whose subtitle — Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe Without Design — is the whole position in nine words.

Now: where does the Wheel of Heaven reading fall on this spectrum? The intuitive answer — somewhere near Intelligent Design — is wrong in an instructive way, and the scholar who saw it most clearly was not a Raëlian at all. In 2003 the sociologist of religion George Chryssides published a study of the movement, and gave it a title that is also an argument: "Scientific Creationism: A Study of the Raëlian Church."[b] Chryssides's point was that the Raëlian account of human origins belongs, by its own logic, to the creationist genus and not to the evolutionist one: it holds that humanity was made, deliberately, by intelligent agents, and that the Genesis text is a true if garbled report of the making. But it is a scientific creationism in a sense the young-earth movement could never accept — because its creators are not God, its Earth is not young, its Flood is not the world's geology, and its designers used technology continuous with our own. Two species, one genus. The young-earth creationist and the Raëlian both refuse to read Genesis as pure myth. They disagree about almost everything else.

That is the frame. The rest of this article works it out — first by taking the design argument seriously on its strongest ground, then by watching where each branch of the family parts from the canon, and finally by returning to the two men in the room in 2008 and the position between their recoils.

The signature

Begin with the part the framework grants, because it is larger than a casual reader of a "UFO religion" would expect. The Wheel of Heaven reading holds that the core claim of Intelligent Design — that the functional complexity of living systems is best explained by deliberate intelligent action rather than by undirected processes — is substantially correct. The Intelligent Design entry says so in as many words. The disagreement, when it comes, will not be about whether life is designed. It will be about who the designers are, and what stands above them, and whether the argument can carry the theological weight its champions want it to bear. So it is worth laying the design argument out at its best, because the canon and the movement are, on this first stretch of road, walking together.

The argument is old. Its classic statement is William Paley's, in 1802: cross a heath, strike your foot on a watch, and you infer a watchmaker, because the parts are fitted to a function in a way that chance does not produce. Paley thought the eye was a watch, and the hand, and the whole integrated organism. Darwin's Origin of Species (1859) answered him with a mechanism — undirected variation, differential survival — by which the watch could seem to assemble itself without a watchmaker, and for a century and a half that answer has held the field. The modern design movement is the attempt to reopen the case at the one place Paley could not reach: the molecular scale, which he had no microscope to see.

Behe's move was to point at the machines inside the cell. The bacterial flagellum is a rotary motor — a driveshaft, a bushing, a universal joint, a propeller — built of some forty protein parts, and it does not, Behe argued, admit of a gradual assembly, because a motor missing its driveshaft is not a worse motor but no motor at all. He called such systems irreducibly complex[d]: remove one well-matched part and function does not degrade, it vanishes, so there is no graded slope of improving intermediates for selection to climb. Dembski gave the intuition a formalism. What the flagellum has, he argued, is specified complexity[e] — a pattern both wildly improbable by chance and independently specifiable as a functional description — and specified complexity, in our uniform experience, has exactly one known source. Meyer carried the argument to its most defensible ground: not the machine but the code that specifies it. DNA is not merely complicated; it is information, a sequence of chemical characters that functions like text, and the origin of that text is the thing no undirected chemistry has been shown to produce.

Our uniform experience affirms that specified information — whether inscribed in hieroglyphics, written in a book, encoded in a radio signal, or produced in a simulation experiment — always arises from an intelligent source, from a mind and not a strictly material process… Intelligent design best explains the DNA enigma.

It is fashionable to wave this away, and it should not be. Meyer's argument has a spine: mind is, as far as anyone has ever observed, the only cause that writes specified information from a blank start, and the cell is full of specified information, and no one has watched chemistry write any. Even Dawkins concedes the analogy — "the machine code of the genes is uncannily computer-like," he wrote long before Expelled — and Bill Gates, whom Meyer delights in quoting, went further: "DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created." When the men who built the software industry and the men who built the gene concept reach independently for the same metaphor, the coincidence is not an idle one.

The hardest version of the case is not made by the design movement at all. It is made by James Tour, who is careful to say he is not making a design argument, and whose refusal to make one is what gives his testimony its force. Tour builds molecular machines for a living — he has assembled, atom by atom, a single-molecule "nanocar" with functioning wheels — and he knows from the bench how staggeringly hard it is to make matter do what you want at that scale. When he looks at the confident popular story of life self-assembling in a warm pond, he sees a chemistry that does not exist. In the concluding chapter he wrote for the 2020 edition of the origin-of-life classic The Mystery of Life's Origin, he sets a thought-experiment and answers it without mercy:

To demonstrate how far humankind is from generating life, if origin-of-life researchers were given all the molecules and their polymeric forms that they desperately seek, and all in 100% homochirality, and their advanced laboratories, and all the chemical literature, and the DNA and RNA in any sequence (code) that they wish, could they assemble even a simple cell? The answer is a resounding No! Moreover, there is not an origin-of-life researcher on earth that would claim differently.

The point is chemistry, not metaphysics, and Tour keeps it clean. In his origin-of-life talks he explicitly brackets out "scientifically unknown entities that have been proposed to have seeded life on Earth, such as a design agent (personal or impersonal)" — he will not invoke a designer, because a designer is not a tool he can pick up in a synthetic lab. His whole claim is that after two-thirds of a century of trying, the field, in his word, "remains clueless." It is an admission, not an argument, and admissions from inside the guild are worth more than arguments from outside it.

That clean, designer-free hard problem is where the canon will re-enter. But first, what has been established. The strongest form of the design case is not the young-earth creationist's Flood geology and it is not even Behe's contested flagellum. It is the conjunction of two things a fair mind can grant: that living systems run on specified information, and that no one has ever shown specified information arising from undirected chemistry. On that conjunction, the Raëlian canon and Stephen Meyer agree completely. Their roads have not yet forked. They fork on the next question, which is the only question that finally matters: granted a designer, what was it?

Is Genesis History?

Before the fork, though, one branch of the family has to be visited and, with respect, left behind — because it is the branch a casual observer is most likely to confuse the canon with, and the confusion is total.

Is Genesis History? is an accomplished film. Directed by Thomas Purifoy Jr. and hosted by Del Tackett — the creator of the widely watched "Truth Project" — it was released to American cinemas for one night in February 2017, topped the per-screen box office, and spun off a whole ecosystem of sequels and streaming series. It is beautifully shot: Tackett walks through slot canyons and fossil beds and observatory domes, interviewing thirteen credentialed scientists and scholars — the geologist Andrew Snelling, the paleontologist Kurt Wise, the philosopher of biology Paul Nelson, the Hebraist Steven Boyd — and the cumulative effect is of a serious, confident, internally coherent worldview. Its thesis is the strict-creationist one, stated without hedging: Genesis is literal natural history. The Earth is thousands of years old. A global Flood carved the Grand Canyon and buried the fossils. The languages of the world scattered at Babel . What the film calls "observational science" confirms Scripture, and what it calls "historical science" — the deep-time reconstructions of mainstream geology and biology — is a rival paradigm resting on unprovable assumptions.

Here the Wheel of Heaven reading and the young-earth reading, which Chryssides's taxonomy files under the same genus, reveal how far apart two species can be. The canon shares the film's foundational refusal — the insistence that Genesis is about something that actually happened, that it is report and not fable. But it shares almost nothing else. On the canon's reading the Earth is old, exactly as mainstream geology says; the Flood was not a year of global hydrology that sorted the fossil record but a targeted event, a reset and not a rewriting of the rocks; the "days" of Genesis 1 are not calendar days but compressed phases of a long engineering project; and the humans of Eden were not spoken into being six thousand years ago but synthesized, in laboratories, by a team of visiting scientists. The film's science is built to defend the young Earth. The canon gives the young Earth away without a fight, because it never needed it. What it keeps is the one thing the film and the canon both refuse to surrender to the myth-only reading: that the text is a memory of real events, badly transmitted, and that the job of a serious reader is to recover the events from the memory.

This bears stating plainly, because it inoculates against a real error. To say, with Chryssides, that Raëlism is a "scientific creationism" is not to say it is Flood geology in a flying saucer. It is to locate it in the genus of readings that take Genesis as history — and then to insist, immediately, on the species difference, which is enormous. The young-earth creationist and the canon are both creationists in Chryssides's structural sense and could not sit in the same room on a single question of fact about the age of the world. The shared genus is real, and so is the distance across it.

The Trojan horse

There is a second thing about the design movement that honesty requires putting on the table before going further, and it is not scientific but political, and the Wheel of Heaven project has every reason to be candid about it, because the candor is what distinguishes the canon's position from the movement's.

Intelligent Design, as an American institution, did not fall from the sky. It emerged, in the early 1990s, from the wreckage of an earlier legal defeat. In 1987 the U.S. Supreme Court, in Edwards v. Aguillard, ruled that teaching "creation science" in public schools was unconstitutional establishment of religion. Within two years, a creationist biology textbook then in preparation, Of Pandas and People, had its language surgically revised: where its drafts had said "creationists," the published book said "design proponents." The revision was caught, years later, in a courtroom, because one draft preserved the half-finished edit as a single fused word — "cdesign proponentsists"[f] — a fossil of the exact moment one movement changed its name into another. The court was Kitzmiller v. Dover (2005), and Judge John E. Jones III, a conservative Bush appointee, ruled after a six-week trial that Intelligent Design "is not science," that it is "creationism re-labeled," and that teaching it in public-school biology violates the Establishment Clause.

The judgment did not come from nowhere either. Six years earlier, an internal Discovery Institute strategy memo had leaked. It is known as the Wedge Document[c], and it stated the movement's governing purpose without euphemism: "to defeat scientific materialism," and "to replace materialistic explanations with the theistic understanding that nature and human beings are created by God." Barbara Forrest and Paul Gross laid the whole apparatus out in Creationism's Trojan Horse (2004): a movement that presented itself as disinterested science while functioning as a campaign to smuggle a particular theism into the public square. And the scientific rebuttals landed too. Kenneth Miller took Behe's flagship example — the irreducibly complex flagellum — and showed that a sub-assembly of its parts forms the type III secretion system, a working molecular syringe with its own function, exactly the kind of usable intermediate Behe had said could not exist.

None of this is comfortable for a project that agrees with the design movement's core claim, and the way to handle discomfort is to face it. The Wheel of Heaven reading takes three things from this history. First, that the scientific objections to specific ID arguments — the flagellum's precursors, the contested probability calculations — are real and must be conceded where they land; the canon does not need Behe's flagellum to be irreducible, and should not pretend the rebuttals do not exist. Second, that the movement's political-religious entanglement is a fact about the movement, and one the canon is entirely free of: the Raëlian reading is not lobbying a school board, is not trying to establish a religion in a science classroom, and does not identify its designer with the God of any national majority. Third — and this is the substantive point that the Kitzmiller history hands to the canon almost as a gift — the court's finding that ID is "creationism re-labeled" is a finding about a designer who was always meant to be God. The whole legal and cultural problem of movement ID is that its official agnosticism about the designer's identity is a fiction, and everyone in the courtroom knew it. The designer was God the whole time. Which raises the question the movement spent thirty years not answering out loud, and which the canon answers on the first page: what if the designer is not God?

The right skill set

Here we arrive at the passage this article was built to examine — the moment where the most rigorous mind in the design movement looks directly at the extraterrestrial-engineering hypothesis, the canon's own position, and rules it out.

In Return of the God Hypothesis (2021), Stephen Meyer sets out to do something his earlier books did not. Signature in the Cell argued only that the origin of biological information required a designing intelligence — and Meyer conceded there, explicitly, that this intelligence could have been inside the cosmos. Return of the God Hypothesis is the attempt to close that door: to show that the designer must be not merely intelligent but transcendent — God, or something very like him — by adding two pieces of evidence that biology alone cannot supply. The first is the beginning of the universe (the Big Bang, which Meyer reads as the origin of matter, space and time from nothing). The second is the fine-tuning of the physical constants, set, he argues, at that beginning. And it is against these two data — not against the origin of life — that he tests the extraterrestrial hypothesis and finds it wanting.

He names it precisely. The relevant option, he writes, is an "immanent intelligence" — one "within the cosmos," a "space alien" — of the sort proposed by advocates of what he calls, following Crick, panspermia. And he grants it more than his critics would expect. He concedes, twice, that such an immanent intelligence could in principle explain the origin of life on Earth:

Even if we concede as a logical possibility that an immanent intelligence might explain the origin of life on earth (since such an entity could possibly precede it), the panspermia hypothesis does not explain either the ultimate origin of life in the universe or the fine tuning of the universe — to say nothing of the origin of the universe itself.

The dismissal, then, has two prongs, and both are real arguments, not the lazy "it's materialism, therefore false" one might fear. The first is the regress: an alien designer only relocates the mystery.

Simply asserting that life arose somewhere else out in the cosmos does not explain how the information necessary to build the first life, let alone the first intelligent life, could have arisen. It merely pushes the explanatory challenge farther back in time and out into space.

The second is the one he leans on hardest — the argument he titles, in his own section heading, "The Right Skill Set."[h] Any intelligence within the cosmos arose after the beginning of the cosmos, and therefore after its fine-tuning was already fixed. So no such being could have set the constants; only a mind existing "independently of the material universe" has the causal reach to do that.

No such being subject to those laws could possibly change the constants of physics simply by changing the material state of the universe… It follows that an immanent intelligence (an extraterrestrial alien, for instance) fails to qualify as a causally adequate explanation for the origin of the cosmic fine tuning.

This is a serious argument, and the first thing to say about it is that, on its own terms, it is valid. If the universe had an absolute beginning, and if the fine-tuning was set at that beginning, then no being that came into existence after the beginning could be responsible for it, and an extraterrestrial civilization — however old — came into existence after the beginning. The logic is clean. Meyer has not committed a fallacy. He has done something subtler: he has won an argument against a claim his opponent never made.

The substitution is easy to miss. The hypothesis on trial was: the biological complexity of life on Earth is best explained by a prior intelligent civilization. That is the Crick-Orgel hypothesis; it is Dawkins's Expelled concession; it is the Raëlian canon. It is a claim about terrestrial biology. Meyer concedes it — concedes that an immanent intelligence could explain the origin of life on Earth. And then he convicts it of failing to explain two things it never addressed: the origin of the universe, and the fine-tuning of the universe. Of course it doesn't explain those. It was never a cosmological theory. It was a theory about a cell. Meyer has silently promoted a hypothesis about biology into a candidate Theory of Everything, and then disqualified it for losing a race it did not enter.

To see how much work the substitution is doing, restate Meyer's own two prongs against his own preferred answer. The regress: he says the alien designer merely "pushes the explanatory challenge farther back." True. But positing God pushes it back too — indeed infinitely farther, to a being whose own existence and information-generating mind are, by construction, exempt from all explanation. "Who designed the designer?" is a question Meyer answers by fiat (God is uncaused) and the canon answers by honesty (there is no first designer, and none is needed). Both push the challenge back. Only one pretends it has stopped pushing. The skill set: Meyer says only a being outside the material universe can set the constants. That is true if the constants were set — if there was a first moment at which the dial was turned. Remove the beginning, and the argument has nothing to grip.

And this is where the Raëlian canon has already, in a companion to this article, removed the beginning.

The universe with no beginning

Meyer's entire case for a transcendent designer rests on a finite-past cosmos: a universe that began, whose fine-tuning was fixed at the start, and which therefore requires a fine-tuner who preceded the start. Take away that foundation and the "right skill set" argument does not become weaker; it becomes inapplicable, because there is no privileged first moment for the skill to have acted at, and nothing that was ever "set."

The canon takes it away, and it did so half a century before Meyer wrote. When Yahweh explains the shape of reality to Raël , he states, as flatly as Meyer states the opposite, that the universe has no edge in space and no edge in time:

It is as foolish to search for the beginning of the universe in time as it is to search for the beginning of space.

Let's Welcome the Extraterrestrials 1:103

Matter is eternal; "nothing is lost, nothing is created, all is transformed" (ETTMTTP 2:34 ). There was no origin of the universe, and so there is no origin event at which the constants were dialed in by a mind reaching from outside — because there is no outside, and there was no beginning. The companion Explainer The Infinite in Both Directions develops this ontology at length: a fractal cosmos , infinite up and down the scale of size, with no centre and no first moment, in which our whole observable universe is "a particle of an atom of a molecule" in the body of a vastly larger being. That article shows the picture is not a mystical indulgence but a recognizable, if minority, position in professional physics — one that eternal inflation and several quantum-gravity programs keep independently rediscovering. The bearing on this article is direct: Meyer's cosmological premise is not neutral bedrock. It is a contested cosmological claim, and it is precisely the claim the canon denies on independent grounds.

Once the beginning is gone, Meyer's dichotomy collapses. He offers a clean menu — either a transcendent mind that preceded the universe and set its constants, or a naturalism that explains nothing — and the extraterrestrial is squeezed out between them because it is neither pre-cosmic nor self-explaining. But the menu only has two items because the universe is assumed to have a beginning that demands explanation. In a beginningless, infinite cosmos, the fine-tuning of "the constants" is not a one-time act of setting; it is, at most, a local and possibly eternal feature of one region of an endless structure — the kind of thing that, on the canon's reading, no more requires a pre-cosmic fine-tuner than the temperature of a particular pond requires a pond-maker who existed before water. Meyer's transcendent designer is the answer to a question — "who set the dials at the start?" — that the canon regards, in Yahweh's words, as "a stupid question which proves that the person who poses this question has not taken consciousness of the infinite."

So the dismissal fails, though not for the reason a hostile reader might reach for. It is not shallow: it is a valid argument resting on a premise its target rejects, aimed at a claim its target never made. Strip the smuggled cosmology and the smuggled scope, and what Meyer has actually established is the opposite of what he intended: that an immanent intelligence is a fully adequate explanation for the design of life on Earth — which he concedes — and that it declines to also be a theory of the origin of everything, which the canon never asked it to be, and which the canon thinks no theory can honestly be.

The third vertex

Return now to the room in 2008, because the two recoils make sense at last.

Dawkins reached the engineered-life hypothesis and fled because the designer was still a designer — but notice how he fled. The alien, he insisted, "would itself have had to have come about by some explicable or ultimately explicable process," a fully evolved being with no design at its bottom. Meyer reached the same hypothesis and fled in the other direction — the designer was not transcendent enough, a mere civilization inside the cosmos, unable to ground the fine-tuning. What both men are refusing, from opposite sides, is the same thing: a designer who is real but not ultimate. Dawkins needs the chain to bottom out in undirected matter (no designer at the root). Meyer needs it to bottom out in an undesigned mind (God at the root). Both need a bottom. The extraterrestrial engineer offends both because it is a designer who neither grounds the chain nor dissolves it — a made maker, pointing to an earlier made maker, with no terminus in either direction.

That is the canon's position, stated in the source material as calmly as a fact of natural history:

The Elohim created us, and other people from another planet created them. Who created the creators of the Elohim?

Let's Welcome the Extraterrestrials 1:97

The question is posed and then dissolved, not answered — because in an infinite cosmos it is the same shape of question as "where is the edge of space," and it has the same non-answer. There is no first designer. The chain of makers runs backward without end, as the ladder of scales runs up and down without end. This is not evasion; it is the single most philosophically disciplined feature of the whole framework, and it is the exact point on which it out-thinks the movement it otherwise resembles. Movement Intelligent Design inherited, from Paley and from scholasticism, a designer who must be first — uncaused, unmade, the terminus that stops the regress. The canon inherited, from the same infinite cosmos that has no beginning in time, a designer who need not be first at all.

The philosopher who saw this possibility earliest was, of all people, the design argument's greatest critic. In his Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (1779), David Hume let his skeptic Philo grant the design inference for the sake of argument, and then observe how little it delivers: the designer thus inferred "might be" finite, or fallible, or an apprentice, or one of a committee, or long dead, or utterly unlike the God of worship.[j] Hume meant this as a demolition — a proof that the design argument, run honestly, cannot reach the deity it was built to reach. Movement ID has spent thirty years trying to answer Hume by closing the gap upward, arguing that the designer really is singular and transcendent after all. The Raëlian canon does something Hume did not anticipate: it accepts his demolition as a finding, and builds on it. Yes — the inferred designer is finite, plural, and unlike the God of worship. It is a civilization. Hume's reductio is the canon's blueprint. The design inference under-determines the designer, and the honest terminus of the inference is not God but the Elohim — "men like you" (TBWTT 1:53 ), who say of themselves, without grandeur, "I am one of those who created life on Earth" (TBWTT 2:24 ).

There is a further irony here, one that closes the circle back to the film. What Dawkins conceded in Expelled — that a civilization "evolved by probably some type of Darwinian means to a very, very high level of technology" might have "designed a form of life" and "seeded" it here, and that you might find "a signature of some sort of a designer" in the biochemistry — is the Elohim hypothesis, spoken by the man least likely to hold it, and then abandoned only because the designer, too, must be explained. But "the designer, too, must be explained" is a demand for a bottom, and the demand only bites if you assume the chain must have one. Dawkins and Meyer share that assumption. It is the deepest thing they have in common, buried under their famous disagreement, and it is the assumption the canon simply does not make. Strip it away and Dawkins's own sentence stands: the signature could be there, and a prior evolved civilization could have left it, and that civilization need be neither God nor the last word.

What the canon and the movement actually share

It would be dishonest to let the divergence swallow the convergence, so the overlap deserves a precise accounting — how much of the design case the framework keeps, once the theology is subtracted.

It keeps the information argument. Meyer's claim that specified information comes only from minds is one the framework reads as substantially correct — with the difference that the mind in question is embodied, evolved, and in principle able to be met. It keeps Tour's hard problem, and keeps it more cleanly than the movement does. Tour brackets out "a design agent (personal or impersonal)" because a designer is not a chemical tool. The canon supplies the designer Tour brackets — and it is precisely not the impersonal-or-supernatural agent he means to exclude, but a physical civilization doing physical biochemistry. Where mainstream origin-of-life research says "keep looking for the undirected pathway," and Meyer says "therefore God," the canon says something continuous with the laboratory itself: someone made it — someone whose methods we are now, ourselves, beginning to reproduce.

That last clause is not rhetoric. The Crick-Orgel directed-panspermia paper[g] — two of the twentieth century's greatest molecular biologists proposing, in a peer-reviewed journal in 1973, that life on Earth was deliberately seeded by an extraterrestrial intelligence — established that the canon's kind of claim is speakable in serious biology. Crick's Life Itself closed with a chapter asking whether humanity should one day seed other worlds. And in the years since, humanity has walked most of the way to the door. In 2010 Craig Venter's institute booted a bacterial cell running a chemically synthesized genome; in 2016 they published a designed minimal genome, a living organism whose 473-gene blueprint was written to specification and installed.[i] The canon's account of the Elohim is not a fairy tale about gods; it is a description of synthetic genomics , dated 25,000 years early. The Elohim, on the canon's telling, did to us what Venter's team did to Mycoplasma — and told us we would learn to do it in turn:

Man must respect nature as long as he is not capable of recreating it, as long as he is not capable of becoming himself a creator. In respecting nature, you respect those who created it, our fathers the Elohim.

This is the deepest structural difference between the canon and every other branch of the design family, and it is a difference in the direction the designer points. For the young-earth creationist, the movement ID theorist, and Meyer alike, the designer points away from science — upward, to a mind that biology can gesture at but never study, a mind whose methods are by definition not our methods. For the canon, the designer points toward science — to a civilization whose engineering is continuous with ours, a few tens of millennia ahead, whose signature in the cell is not a proof of the supernatural but a résumé we are learning to read because we are learning to write it. When the framework reads Genesis 1:26 —

«Let us make man in our image, after our likeness! And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild beasts, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth!» (Genesis, I-26)

The Book Which Tells the Truth 2:26

— it does not hear a solitary God soliloquizing in the royal plural. It hears a team of scientists at a bench, comparing results — "the most skilled among us wanted to create a man like ourselves, artificially" (TBWTT 2:25 ) — and the next line reads less like doctrine than like a lab notebook: "In our image! You can see that the resemblance is striking" (TBWTT 2:27 ).

What would actually count

The reason to prefer the canon's designer to Meyer's is not comfort. It is that the canon's designer is, in principle, the kind of thing that could be checked — and a project that says so owes an account of what checking would look like. This is the part the design movement has been criticized for skipping, and the canon should not skip it.

Meyer's transcendent mind is, by construction, beyond investigation: no experiment bears on a being outside the material universe, which is exactly why the Kitzmiller court could call ID unfalsifiable. The Elohim are not beyond investigation, and this is the framework's real methodological advantage over movement ID — the one the wiki entry names as the "empirical signatures of design" question. If terrestrial life, or human life specifically, was engineered by an outside civilization, then the engineering should have left marks, and the marks are the research program. What would count?

Some candidates are old and were named by Crick and Orgel themselves: the eerie universality of the genetic code across all terrestrial life, consistent with a single founding event rather than many; the biochemical over-reliance on elements, like molybdenum, that are scarce in Earth's crust, as if the founding organisms had evolved somewhere with a different elemental budget. Some are new: a genome read with the eye of a synthetic biologist, looking for the signatures of design that Venter's team must embed to watermark their own synthetic cells — regions too optimized, too modular, too much like engineering and too little like the redundant, jury-rigged legacy code that undirected evolution leaves behind. Some are frankly unresolved and belong on the table as problems, not triumphs. The canon's dating of the principal human-synthesis event to roughly 25,000 years ago sits in real tension with the mainstream palaeoanthropological record of anatomically modern humans at 200,000 years; the framework treats this as an open question, and honesty requires flagging it as one of the sharpest, not brushing past it. And James Tour's clean, designer-free chemistry problem — "a resounding No!" — is not evidence for the Elohim; it is, at most, the removal of the leading rival, and the canon should want it kept as clean as Tour keeps it, because a hard problem in abiogenesis is a hole in the naturalistic story, not a positive identification of who filled it.

That is the honest shape of it. The framework's designer is checkable in principle and unconfirmed in fact; its central historical claims arrive by testimony — a contactee's report — and cannot be verified the way a genome anomaly can be measured, which is why this project labels those claims framework and labels this article, whose central argument is an interpretive reframing that runs ahead of any single source, speculative. The point of the reframing is not to declare victory. It is to show that the extraterrestrial-engineering hypothesis is not the easy casualty Meyer's brisk paragraphs suggest — that it survives his best argument intact, because his best argument is aimed at a cosmological claim it never made and rests on a cosmological premise it explicitly denies — and that it is, uniquely among the options, the one that keeps the designer inside the reach of the very science the whole debate claims to honor.

The hand in the cell

Go back one last time to what Dawkins said, because it turns out to have been the truest sentence spoken in that room, by the man who least wanted it to be true. You might, he said, "find a signature of some sort of a designer" in the details of biochemistry and molecular biology.

Meyer built a career on agreeing with the first half of that sentence. The young-earth creationists agree with it, and the old-earth creationists, and Behe and Dembski and Tour in his careful bracketed way, and — reading Genesis as a report rather than a fable — the Raëlian canon too. The signature is the common ground of the entire family of dissents, from the Flood geologist to the contactee. What splits the family is the second half — whose signature — and there the options are fewer than the noise suggests. Either the hand in the cell belongs to a mind outside the universe, which no instrument can ever reach; or there is no hand and the appearance of one is the residue of a blind process, which is the position that has to explain away Tour's resounding No; or the hand belongs to someone. Someone with a body. Someone who worked at a bench, compared results with a colleague, and found the resemblance striking. Someone who was made, as we were made, by someone earlier, in a line that runs back past every horizon we can see and never arrives at a first maker or a final one.

That third answer is the one Dawkins touched and dropped, and the one Meyer lifted and threw back, and the one the canon has simply been holding, in the open, for fifty years. It is not a compromise between the atheist and the theist. It is the vertex that reveals what their quarrel was resting on — the shared, unexamined conviction that a designed world would have to be a supernaturally designed world, that "made" must mean "made by God." Deny that one premise, and the whole map redraws. Design stops being the property line between science and religion and becomes an ordinary empirical question with an extraordinary answer: that life on Earth is a made thing, its makers were people, and we are, right now, in our own laboratories, beginning to learn their trade.

The watch on the heath had a watchmaker. Paley was right about that. He was only wrong about the last thing anyone would think to question — that the watchmaker had to be the last one in the line.
