Ruth
A Moabite widow's loyalty and the lineage of David
A short pastoral narrative set during the era of the judges. Ruth, a Moabite widow, follows her mother-in-law Naomi back to Bethlehem and marries Boaz; the genealogy at the end identifies her as great-grandmother of King David.

Au temps où les Juges gouvernaient, il y eut une famine dans le pays. Un homme de Bethléem de Juda s’en alla, avec sa femme et ses deux fils, séjourner dans les champs de Moab.
And it came to pass in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

Le nom de cet homme était Élimélech, le nom de sa femme était Noémi, et les noms de ses deux fils étaient Mahalon et Cheljon ; ils étaient Éphratéens, de Bethléem de Juda. Ils allèrent aux champs de Moab, et s’y établirent.
And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

And Elimelech, Naomi`s husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons.

Il prirent des femmes moabites, dont l’une se nommait Orpha et l’autre se nommait Ruth, et ils demeurèrent là environ dix ans.
And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelt there about ten years.

Mahalon et Cheljon moururent aussi tous deux, et la femme resta privée de ses deux fils et de son mari.
And Mahlon and Chilion died both of them; and the woman was left of her two children and of her husband.

Alors, s’étant levée, elle et ses belles-filles, elle quitta les champs de Moab, car elle avait appris dans la campagne de Moab que Yahweh avait visité son peuple et lui avait donné du pain.
Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that Jehovah had visited his people in giving them bread.

Elle sortit donc du lieu où elle s’était établie, avec ses deux belles-filles et elles se mirent en route pour retourner au pays de Juda.
And she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.

Noémi dit à ses deux belles-filles : « Allez, retournez chacune dans la maison de votre mère. Que Yahweh use de bonté envers vous, comme vous l’avez fait envers ceux qui sont morts et envers moi !
And Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each of you to her mother`s house: Jehovah deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.

Que Yahweh vous fasse trouver à chacune du repos dans la maison d’un époux ! » Et elle les baisa. Elles élevèrent la voix et pleurèrent,
Jehovah grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

et elles lui dirent : « Non ; nous retournerons avec toi vers ton peuple. »
And they said unto her, Nay, but we will return with thee unto thy people.
11
Noémi dit : « Retournez, mes filles ; pourquoi viendriez-vous avec moi ? Ai-je encore dans mon sein des fils qui puissent devenir vos maris ?
And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? have I yet sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

Retournez, mes filles, allez. Je suis trop âgée pour me remarier. Et quand je dirais : J’ai de l’espérance ; quand je serais cette nuit même à un mari et que j’enfanterais des fils,
Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should even have a husband to-night, and should also bear sons;

attendriez-vous pour cela jusqu’à ce qu’ils fussent grands ? vous abstiendriez-vous pour cela de vous remarier ? Non, mes filles. Il m’est très amer à cause de vous que la main de Yahweh se soit appesantie sur moi. »
would ye therefore tarry till they were grown? would ye therefore stay from having husbands? nay, my daughters, for it grieveth me much for your sakes, for the hand of Jehovah is gone forth against me.

Et, élevant la voix, elles pleurèrent encore. Puis Orpha baisa sa belle-mère, mais Ruth s’attacha à elle.
And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clave unto her.

Noémi dit à Ruth : « Voici que ta belle-sœur s’en est retournée vers son peuple et vers son dieu ; retourne avec ta belle-sœur. »
And she said, Behold, thy sister-in-law is gone back unto her people, and unto her god: return thou after thy sister-in-law.
16
Ruth répondit : « Ne me presse pas de te laisser en m’en retournant loin de toi. Où tu iras, j’irai ; où tu demeureras, je demeurerai ; ton peuple sera mon peuple, et ton Dieu sera mon Dieu ;
And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, and to return from following after thee, for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God;

où tu mourras, je mourrai et j’y serai ensevelie. Que Yahweh me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si autre chose que la mort me sépare de toi ! »
where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: Jehovah do so to me, and more also, if aught but death part thee and me.

Voyant que Ruth était décidée à l’accompagner, Noémi cessa ses instances.
And when she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking unto her.
19
Elles s’en allèrent toutes deux, jusqu’à ce qu’elles arrivassent à Bethléem. Lorsqu’elles entrèrent dans Bethléem, toute la ville fut émue à cause d’elles, et les femmes disaient : « Est-ce là Noémi ? »
So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and [the women] said, Is this Naomi?

Elle leur dit : « Ne m’appelez pas Noémi ; appelez-moi Marah, car le Tout-Puissant m’a remplie d’amertume.
And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara; for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
21
Je m’en suis allée les mains pleines, et Yahweh me ramène les mains vides. Pourquoi m’appelleriez-vous Noémi, après que Yahweh a témoigné contre moi et que le Tout-Puissant m’a affligée ? »
I went out full, and Jehovah hath brought me home again empty; why call ye me Naomi, seeing Jehovah hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

C’est ainsi que Noémi revint et, avec elle, sa belle-fille, Ruth la Moabite, qui était arrivée des champs de Moab. Elles arrivèrent à Bethléem au commencement de la moisson des orges.
So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

Noémi avait un parent du côté de son mari ; c’était un homme puissant et riche, de la famille d’Élimélech et son nom était Booz.
And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband`s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech, and his name was Boaz.

Ruth, la Moabite, dit à Noémi : « je voudrais bien aller aux champs glaner des épis derrière celui aux yeux duquel j’aurai trouvé grâce. » Elle lui répondit : « Va, ma fille. »
And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.

Ruth s’en alla et vint glaner dans un champ derrière les moissonneurs ; et il se rencontra qu’elle arriva dans la pièce de terre qui appartenait à Booz, qui était de la famille d’Élimélech.
And she went, and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on the portion of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.

Et voilà que Booz vint de Bethléem, et il dit aux moissonneurs : « Yahweh soit avec vous ! » Ils lui répondirent : « Yahweh te bénisse ! »
And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, Jehovah be with you. And they answered him, Jehovah bless thee.

Et Booz dit à son serviteur établi sur les moissonneurs : « À qui est cette jeune fille ? »
Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damsel is this?

Le serviteur établi sur les moissonneurs répondit : « C’est une jeune Moabite, qui est revenue avec Noémi des champs de Moab.
And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab:

Elle nous a dit : Laissez-moi glaner et ramasser des épis entre les gerbes, derrière les moissonneurs, Et, depuis ce matin qu’elle est arrivée, jusqu’à présent, elle a été debout, et ce repos qu’elle prend dans la maison est court. »
And she said, Let me glean, I pray you, and gather after the reapers among the sheaves. So she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, save that she tarried a little in the house.

Booz dit à Ruth : « Ecoute, ma fille, ne va pas glaner dans un autre champ ; ne t’éloigne pas d’ici, et reste ainsi avec mes servantes.
Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither pass from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens.

Regarde le champ que l’on moissonnera, et va derrière elles. N’ai-je pas défendu aux serviteurs de te toucher ? Et quand tu auras soif, tu iras aux cruches, et tu boiras de ce que les serviteurs auront puisé. »
Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn.

Alors, tombant sur sa face, elle se prosterna contre terre et lui dit : « Comment ai-je trouvé grâce à tes yeux, pour que tu t’intéresses à moi, qui suis une étrangère ? »
Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found favor in thy sight, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a foreigner?

Booz lui répondit : « On m’a rapporté tout ce que tu as fait pour ta belle-mère après la mort de ton mari, et comment tu as quitté ton père et ta mère et le pays de ta naissance, et tu es venue vers un peuple que tu ne connaissais pas auparavant.
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been showed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother-in-law since the death of thy husband; and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people that thou knewest not heretofore.

Que Yahweh te rende ce que tu as fait, et que ta récompense soit pleine, de la part de Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, sous les ailes duquel tu es venue te réfugier ! »
Jehovah recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of Jehovah, the God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to take refuge.

Et elle dit : « Oh ! que je trouve grâce à tes yeux, mon seigneur ! Car tu m’as consolée, et tu as parlé au cœur de ta servante, bien que je ne sois pas même comme l’une de tes servantes. »
Then she said, Let me find favor in thy sight, my lord, for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken kindly unto thy handmaid, though I be not as one of thy handmaidens.

Au moment du repas, Booz dit à Ruth : « Approche, mange du pain et trempe ton morceau dans le vinaigre. » Elle s’assit à côté des moissonneurs ; Booz lui donna du grain rôti ; elle mangea et se rassasia, et elle garda le reste ;
And at meal-time Boaz said unto her, Come hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers, and they reached her parched grain, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left thereof.

ensuite elle se leva pour glaner. Et Booz donna cet ordre à ses serviteurs : « qu’elle glane aussi entre les gerbes, et ne lui faites pas de honte ;
And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not.
16
et même vous tirerez pour elle quelques épis des javelles, que vous laisserez par terre, afin qu’elle les ramasse, et vous ne lui ferez point de reproches. »
And also pull out some for her from the bundles, and leave it, and let her glean, and rebuke her not.
17
Elle glana dans le champ jusqu’au soir, et elle battit ce qu’elle avait glané ; il y eut environ un épha d’orge.
So she gleaned in the field until even; and she beat out that which she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley.
18
Elle l’emporta et revint à la ville, et sa belle-mère vit ce qu’elle avait glané. Elle tira aussi ce qu’elle avait gardé de reste après son repas, et le donna.
And she took it up, and went into the city; and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth and gave to her that which she had left after she was sufficed.

Sa belle-mère lui dit : « Où as-tu glané aujourd’hui, et où as-tu travaillé ? Béni soit celui qui s’est intéressé à toi ! » Et Ruth fit connaître à sa belle-mère chez qui elle avait travaillé, en disant : « L’homme chez qui j’ai travaillé aujourd’hui s’appelle Booz. »
And her mother-in-law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to-day? and where hast thou wrought? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she showed her mother-in-law with whom she had wrought, and said, The man`s name with whom I wrought to-day is Boaz.

Noémi dit à sa belle-fille : « Qu’il soit béni de Yahweh de ce qu’il n’a pas cessé d’être miséricordieux envers les vivants, aussi bien qu’envers ceux qui sont morts ! » Noémi lui dit encore : « Cet homme est pour nous un proche parent et l’un de ceux qui ont sur nous droit de rachat. »
And Naomi said unto her daughter-in-law, Blessed be he of Jehovah, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is nigh of kin unto us, one of our near kinsmen.

Ruth, la Moabite, dit : Il m’a dit encore : « Reste avec mes serviteurs jusqu’à ce qu’ils aient achevé toute ma moisson. »
And Ruth the Moabitess said, Yea, he said unto me, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest.
22
Et Noémi dit à Ruth, sa belle-fille : « Il est bon, ma fille, que tu sortes avec ses servantes, afin qu’on ne te maltraite pas dans un autre champ. »
And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter-in-law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, and that they meet thee not in any other field.

Elle resta donc avec les servantes de Booz pour glaner, jusqu’à la fin de la moisson des orges et de la moisson du froment ; et elle demeurait avec sa belle-mère.
So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz, to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and she dwelt with her mother-in-law.

Noémi, sa belle-mère lui dit : « Ma fille, je veux te chercher un lieu de repos où tu sois heureuse.
And Naomi her mother-in-law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

Et maintenant, Booz, avec les servantes duquel tu as été, n’est-il pas notre parent ? Voici qu’il doit vanner cette nuit l’orge qui est dans l’aire.
And now is not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to-night in the threshing-floor.

Lave-toi et oins-toi, mets tes plus beaux vêtements, et descends vers l’aire. Ne te laisse pas apercevoir de lui, jusqu’à ce qu’il ait achevé de manger et de boire.
Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the threshing-floor, but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

Et quand il ira se coucher, observe le lieu où il se couche ; puis entre, soulève la couverture de ses pieds et couche-toi ; lui-même te dira ce que tu as à faire. »
And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.

Elle lui répondit : « Je ferai tout ce que tu me dis. »
And she said unto her, All that thou sayest I will do.
6
Elle descendit dans l’aire et fit tout ce que lui avait ordonné sa belle-mère.
And she went down unto the threshing-floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law bade her.
7
Booz mangea et but, et son cœur fut joyeux. Il alla se coucher à l’extrémité du tas de gerbes ; alors Ruth s’approcha doucement, découvrit ses pieds et se coucha.
And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.

Au milieu de la nuit, cet homme eut une frayeur ; il se pencha et, voici qu’une femme était couchée à ses pieds.
And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself; and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.
9
Il dit : « Qui es-tu ? ». Elle répondit : « Je suis Ruth, ta servante ; étends sur ta servante le pan de ton manteau, car tu as droit de rachat. »
And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thy handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.

Il dit : « Bénie sois-tu de Yahweh, ma fille ! Ton dernier amour surpasse le premier, car tu n’as pas recherché des jeunes gens, pauvres ou riches.
And he said, Blessed be thou of Jehovah, my daughter: thou hast showed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.

Maintenant, ma fille, ne crains point ; tout ce que tu diras, je le ferai pour toi ; car tout le peuple de Bethléem sait que tu es une femme vertueuse.
And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou sayest; for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a worthy woman.
12
Maintenant, c’est en vérité que j’ai un droit de rachat, mais il y en a un autre plus proche que moi.
And now it is true that I am a near kinsman; howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.
13
Passe ici la nuit ; et demain, s’il veut te racheter, c’est bien, qu’il te rachète ; mais s’il ne veut pas te racheter, je te rachèterai, moi. Yahweh est vivant ! Reste couchée jusqu’au matin ! »
Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman`s part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as Jehovah liveth: lie down until the morning.

Elle resta donc couchée à ses pieds jusqu’au matin, et elle se leva avant qu’un homme pût en reconnaître un autre. Booz dit : « Qu’on ne sache pas que cette femme est entrée dans l’aire. »
And she lay at his feet until the morning. And she rose up before one could discern another. For he said, Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.

Et il ajouta : « Donne le manteau qui est sur toi, et tiens-le. » Elle le tint : et il mesura six mesures d’orge, qu’il chargea sur elle ; puis il rentra dans la ville.
And he said, Bring the mantle that is upon thee, and hold it; and she held it; and he measured six [measures] of barley, and laid it on her: and he went into the city.

Ruth étant revenue auprès de sa belle-mère, Noémi lui dit : « Qu’as-tu fait, ma fille ? » Ruth lui raconta tout ce que cet homme avait fait pour elle :
And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.

« Il m’a donné, ajouta-t-elle, ces six mesures d’orge, en me disant : Tu ne retourneras pas les mains vides chez ta belle-mère. »
And she said, These six [measures] of barley gave he me; for he said, Go not empty unto thy mother-in-law.
18
Et Noémi dit : « Reste ici, ma fille, jusqu’à ce que tu saches comment finira l’affaire ; car cet homme ne se donnera point de repos qu’il n’ait terminé cette affaire aujourd’hui. »
Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall; for the man will not rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

Booz monta à la porte de la ville et s’y assit. Or voici que celui qui avait droit de rachat et dont Booz avait parlé, vint à passer. Il lui dit : « Arrête-toi, assieds-toi ici, toi un tel. » Cet homme s’arrêta et s’assit.
Now Boaz went up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the near kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.

Alors Booz prit dix hommes parmi les anciens de la ville, et il dit : « Asseyez-vous ici. » Et ils s’assirent.
And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.

Il dit à celui qui avait le droit de rachat : « La portion de champ qui appartenait à notre frère Élimélech, a été vendue par Noémi, qui est revenue des champs de Moab.
And he said unto the near kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth the parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech`s:

Et j’ai dit : je veux t’en informer et te dire : Achète-la en présence de ceux qui siègent ici, et en présence des anciens de mon peuple. Si tu veux racheter, rachète ; si tu ne veux pas, déclare-le-moi, afin que je le sache ; car il n’y a personne avant toi qui ait le droit de rachat ; moi, je viens après toi. » Il répondit : « Je rachèterai. »
And I thought to disclose it unto thee, saying, Buy it before them that sit here, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know; for there is none to redeem it besides thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.

Et Booz dit : « Le jour où tu acquerras le champ de la main de Noémi, tu l’acquerras en même temps de Ruth la Moabite, femme du défunt, pour faire revivre le nom du défunt dans son héritage. »
Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

Celui qui avait le droit de rachat répondit : « Je ne puis pas le racheter pour mon compte, de peur de détruire mon propre héritage. Fais usage de mon droit de rachat, car je ne puis racheter. »
And the near kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: take thou my right of redemption on thee; for I cannot redeem it.

C’était autrefois la coutume en Israël, en cas de rachat et d’échange, pour valider toute affaire, que l’homme ôtât son soulier et le donnât à l’autre cela servait de témoignage en Israël.
Now this was [the custom] in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all things: a man drew off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbor; and this was the [manner of] attestation in Israel.

Celui qui avait le droit de rachat dit à Booz : « Acquiers pour ton compte. » Et il ôta son soulier.
So the near kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thyself. And he drew off his shoe.

Et Booz dit aux anciens et à tout le peuple : « Vous êtes témoins aujourd’hui que j’ai acquis de la main de Noémi tout ce qui appartenait à Elimélech, et tout ce qui appartenait à Cheljon et à Mahalon,
And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech`s, and all that was Chilion`s and Mahlon`s, of the hand of Naomi.

et que j’ai acquis en même temps pour femme Ruth la Moabite, femme de Mahalon, pour faire revivre le nom du défunt dans son héritage, afin que le nom du défunt ne soit point retranché d’entre ses frères et de la porte de son lieu. Vous en êtes témoins en ce jour ! »
Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.

Tout le peuple qui était à la porte et les anciens dirent : « Nous en sommes témoins. Que Yahweh rende la femme qui entre dans ta maison semblable à Rachel et à Lia, qui toutes les deux ont bâti la maison d’Israël ! Sois fort dans Ephrata, et fais-toi un nom dans Bethléem !
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. Jehovah make the woman that is come into thy house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephrathah, and be famous in Bethlehem:

Puisse ta maison être semblable à la maison de Pharès, — que Thamar enfanta à Juda, — par la postérité que Yahweh te donnera de cette jeune femme ! »
and let thy house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which Jehovah shall give thee of this young woman.
13

So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife; and he went in unto her, and Jehovah gave her conception, and she bare a son.

Les femmes dirent à Noémi : « Béni soit Yahweh, qui ne t’a point laissé manquer aujourd’hui d’un rédempteur ! Que son nom devienne célèbre en Israël !
And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be Jehovah, who hath not left thee this day without a near kinsman; and let his name be famous in Israel.

Il restaurera ton âme et sera le soutien de ta vieillesse ! Car ta belle-fille, qui t’aime, l’a enfanté, elle qui vaut mieux pour toi que sept fils. »
And he shall be unto thee a restorer of life, and a nourisher of thine old age, for thy daughter-in-law, who loveth thee, who is better to thee than seven sons, hath borne him.

Noémi prit l’enfant, le mit sur son sein, et elle lui servit de nourrice.
And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.

Les voisines lui donnèrent un nom, en disant : « Un fils est né à Noémi ! » Et elles l’appelèrent Obed. Ce fut le père d’Isaï, père de David. 5. Chap. iv, 18-22 : Généalogie de David.
And the women her neighbors gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
