The conquest and division of the land of Canaan

The narrative of Israel's entry into Canaan under Joshua, the conquest of Jericho and other cities, and the territorial allotment among the twelve tribes. It closes with Joshua's covenant renewal at Shechem.

Chapitre 1

Après la mort de Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, Yahweh parla à Josué, fils de Nun, serviteur de Moïse, en ces termes :

Now it came to pass after the death of Moses the servant of Jehovah, that Jehovah spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses` minister, saying,

« Moïse, mon serviteur, est mort ; maintenant lève-toi, passe ce Jourdain, toi et tout ce peuple, pour entrer dans le pays que je donne aux enfants d’Israël.

Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

Tout lieu que foulera la plante de votre pied, je vous l’ai donné, comme je l’ai dit à Moïse.

Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, to you have I given it, as I spake unto Moses.

Depuis le désert et depuis ce Liban jusqu’au grand fleuve, le fleuve d’Euphrate, — tout le pays des Héthéens, — et jusqu’à la grande mer vers le soleil couchant, tout cela sera votre territoire.

From the wilderness, and this Lebanon, even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border.

Nul ne tiendra devant toi pendant tous les jours de ta vie ; comme j’ai été avec Moïse, je serai avec toi ; je ne te délaisserai, ni ne t’abandonnerai.

There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life. as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee; I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Fortifie-toi et prends courage ; car c’est toi qui mettras ce peuple en possession du pays que j’ai juré à leurs pères de leur donner.

Be strong and of good courage; for thou shalt cause this people to inherit the land which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

Seulement fortifie-toi et aie bon courage, en t’appliquant à agir selon toute la loi que Moïse, mon serviteur, t’a prescrite. Ne t’en détourne ni à droite ni à gauche, afin que tu réussisses en tout ce que tu entreprendras.

Only be strong and very courageous, to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest have good success whithersoever thou goest.

Que ce livre de la loi ne s’éloigne pas de ta bouche ; médite-le jour et nuit, en t’appliquant à agir selon tout ce qui y est écrit ; car alors tu prospéreras dans tes voies et tu réussiras.

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Ne te l’ai-je pas commandé : Fortifie-toi et prends courage ? Sois sans crainte et sans peur, car Yahweh, ton Dieu, est avec toi partout où tu iras. »

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not affrighted, neither be thou dismayed: for Jehovah thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Josué donna cet ordre aux officiers du peuple :

Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,

« Parcourez le camp, et donnez au peuple ce commandement : Préparez-vous des provisions, car dans trois jours vous passerez ce Jourdain pour aller occuper le pays que Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous donne en possession. »

Pass through the midst of the camp, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye are to pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which Jehovah your God giveth you to possess it.

Et aux Rubénites, aux Gadites et à la demi-tribu de Manassé, Josué parla ainsi :

And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,

« Rappelez-vous ce que vous a prescrit Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, en disant : Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous a accordé du repos et vous a donné ce pays.

Remember the word which Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, saying, Jehovah your God giveth you rest, and will give you this land.

Vos femmes, vos petits enfants et vos troupeaux resteront dans le pays que Moïse vous a donné au delà du Jourdain ; mais vous passerez en armes devant vos frères, vous tous, les hommes forts et vaillants ; et vous les aiderez,

Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall abide in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but ye shall pass over before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valor, and shall help them;

jusqu’à ce que Yahweh ait donné du repos à vos frères comme à vous, et qu’ils soient en possession, eux aussi, du pays que leur donne Yahweh, votre Dieu. Puis vous reviendrez au pays qui vous appartient et vous le posséderez, ce pays que Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, vous a donné au delà du Jourdain, vers le soleil levant. »

until Jehovah have given your brethren rest, as [he hath given] you, and they also have possessed the land which Jehovah your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and possess it, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising.

Ils répondirent à Josué, en disant : « Tout ce que tu nous as commandé, nous le ferons, et partout où tu nous enverras, nous irons.

And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou hast commanded us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us we will go.

Comme nous avons obéi en toutes choses à Moïse, ainsi nous t’obéirons. Daigne seulement Yahweh, ton Dieu, être avec toi, comme il a été avec Moïse !

According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only Jehovah thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.

Quiconque sera rebelle à tes ordres et n’obéira pas à tout ce que tu lui commanderas, sera mis à mort. Seulement, fortifie-toi et prends courage ! »

Whosoever he be that shall rebel against thy commandment, and shall not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of good courage.

Chapitre 2

Josué, fils de Nun, fit partir en secret de Sétim deux espions, en leur disant : « Allez, examinez le pays, et Jéricho. » S’étant mis en route, ils arrivèrent dans la maison d’une courtisane, nommée Rahab, et ils y couchèrent.

And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and Jericho. And they went and came into the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lay there.

On le dit au roi de Jéricho, en ces termes : « Voici que des hommes d’entre les enfants d’Israël sont venus ici pendant la nuit, pour explorer le pays. »

And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to-night of the children of Israel to search out the land.

Le roi de Jéricho envoya dire à Rahab : « Fais sortir les hommes qui sont venus chez toi et sont entrés dans ta maison, car c’est pour explorer tout le pays qu’ils sont venus. »

And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, that are entered into thy house; for they are come to search out all the land.

La femme prit les deux hommes et, les ayant cachés, elle dit : « Il est vrai que ces hommes sont venus chez moi, mais je n’ai pas su d’où ils étaient ;

And the woman took the two men, and hid them; and she said, Yea, the men came unto me, but I knew not whence they were:

et comme on allait fermer le soir la porte de la ville, ils sont sortis ; j’ignore où ils sont allés : hâtez-vous de les poursuivre, car vous les atteindrez. »

and it came to pass about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; whither the men went I know not: pursue after them quickly; for ye will overtake them.

Or elle les avait fait monter sur le toit et les avait cachés sous des tiges de lin, qu’elle avait disposées sur le toit.

But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

Ces gens les poursuivirent par le chemin des gués du Jourdain, et, dès que furent sortis ceux qui les poursuivaient, on ferma la porte.

And the men pursued after them the way to the Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they that pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

Avant que les espions se couchassent, Rahab monta vers eux sur le toit, et leur dit :

And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;

« Yahweh, je le sais, vous a donné ce pays ; la terreur de votre nom nous a saisis, et tous les habitants du pays défaillent devant vous.

and she said unto the men, I know that Jehovah hath given you the land, and that the fear of you is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

Car nous avons appris comment Yahweh, lorsque vous sortiez d’Égypte, a mis à sec devant vous les eaux de la mer Rouge, et comment vous avez traité les deux rois des Amorrhéens, au delà du Jourdain, Séhon et Og, que vous avez dévoués par anathème.

For we have heard how Jehovah dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, unto Sihon and to Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

Et, en l’apprenant, notre cœur s’est fondu, chacun a perdu courage à votre approche ; car c’est Yahweh, votre Dieu, qui est Dieu en haut dans le ciel, et en bas sur la terre.

And as soon as we had heard it, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Jehovah your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

Maintenant, je vous prie, jurez-moi par Yahweh que vous aurez pour la maison de mon père la même bonté que j’ai eue pour vous, et donnez-moi un gage assuré

Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by Jehovah, since I have dealt kindly with you, that ye also will deal kindly with my father`s house, and give me a true token;

que vous laisserez la vie à mon père, à ma mère, à mes frères, à mes sœurs, et à tous ceux qui leur appartiennent, et que vous nous sauverez de la mort. »

and that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.

Ces hommes lui répondirent : « Que nous mourrions pour vous, si vous ne divulguez pas notre affaire ! Et quand Yahweh nous donnera ce pays, nous agirons envers toi avec bonté et fidélité. »

And the men said unto her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business; and it shall be, when Jehovah giveth us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

Elle les fit descendre avec une corde par la fenêtre, car sa maison était attenante à la muraille de la ville, et elle habitait sur la muraille.

Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the side of the wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

Elle leur dit : « Allez à la montagne, de peur que ceux qui vous poursuivent ne vous rencontrent, et cachez-vous là pendant trois jours, jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient de retour ; après quoi, vous suivrez votre chemin. »

And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers light upon you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.

Ces hommes lui dirent : « Voici comment nous nous acquitterons de ce serment que tu nous as fait faire :

And the men said unto her, We will be guiltless of this thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

À notre entrée dans le pays, attache ce cordon de fil écarlate à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous fais descendre, et rassemble auprès de toi, dans ta maison, ton père, ta mère, tes frères, et toute la famille de ton père.

Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt gather unto thee into the house thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father`s household.

Si quelqu’un d’eux sort de la porte de ta maison pour aller dehors, son sang sera sur sa tête, et nous en seront innocents ; mais si l’on met la main sur l’un de tous ceux qui seront avec toi dans la maison, son sang sera sur notre tête.

And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we shall be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

Et si tu divulgues notre affaire, nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait prêter. »

But if thou utter this our business, then we shall be guiltless of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

Elle répondit : « Qu’il en soit selon vos paroles. » Puis elle les congédia, et ils partirent ; et elle attacha à la fenêtre le cordon écarlate.

And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

Les espions, s’en étant allés, vinrent à la montagne, et ils y restèrent trois jours, jusqu’à ce que ceux qui les poursuivaient fussent de retour à Jéricho. Ceux qui les poursuivaient les avaient cherchés sur tout le chemin, sans les rencontrer.

And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.

Les deux hommes s’en retournèrent et, étant descendus de la montagne, ils passèrent le Jourdain. Ils vinrent auprès de Josué, fils de Nun, et lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé.

Then the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had befallen them.

Ils dirent à Josué : « Certainement Yahweh a livré tout le pays entre nos mains, et même tous les habitants du pays défaillent devant nous. »

And they said unto Joshua, Truly Jehovah hath delivered into our hands all the land; and moreover all the inhabitants of the land do melt away before us.

Chapitre 3

Josué, s’étant levé de bon matin, partit de Sétim, lui et tous les enfants d’Israël ; arrivés au Jourdain, ils firent une halte avant de le traverser.

And Joshua rose up early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel; and they lodged there before they passed over.

Au bout de trois jours, les officiers parcoururent le camp,

And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the midst of the camp;

et donnèrent cet ordre au peuple : « Lorsque vous verrez l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh, votre Dieu, portée par les prêtres lévites, partez de ce lieu où vous campez et mettez-vous en marche après elle,

and they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of Jehovah your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.

— mais qu’il y ait entre vous et elle une distance de deux mille coudées environ, n’en approchez pas, — afin que vous sachiez bien le chemin que vous devez suivre, car vous n’avez jamais passé par ce chemin. »

Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go; for ye have not passed this way heretofore.

Et Josué dit au peuple : « Sanctifiez-vous, car demain Yahweh fera des prodiges au milieu de vous. »

And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow Jehovah will do wonders among you.

Puis Josué parla aux prêtres, en disant : « Portez l’arche d’alliance, et passez en avant du peuple. » Ils portèrent l’arche d’alliance et s’avancèrent devant le peuple.

And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.

Yahweh dit à Josué : « Aujourd’hui je commencerai à t’élever aux yeux de tout Israël, afin qu’ils sachent que je serai avec toi comme j’ai été avec Moïse.

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.

Toi, donne cet ordre aux prêtres qui portent l’arche d’alliance : Lorsque vous arriverez au bord des eaux du Jourdain, vous vous arrêterez dans le Jourdain. »

And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, ye shall stand still in the Jordan.

Josué dit aux enfants d’Israël : « Approchez et écoutez les paroles de Yahweh, votre Dieu. »

And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of Jehovah your God.

Et Josué dit : « À ceci vous reconnaîtrez que le Dieu vivant est au milieu de vous, et qu’il ne manquera pas de chasser devant vous les Chananéens, les Héthéens, les Hévéens, les Phérézéens, les Gergéséens, les Amorrhéens et les Jébuséens.

And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Hivite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Jebusite.

Voici que l’arche de l’alliance du Seigneur de toute la terre va passer devant vous dans le Jourdain.

Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over before you into the Jordan.

Maintenant, prenez douze hommes parmi les tribus d’Israël, un homme par chaque tribu.

Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, for every tribe a man.

Et dès que les prêtres qui portent l’arche de Yahweh, le Seigneur de toute la terre, poseront la plante des pieds dans les eaux du Jourdain, les eaux du Jourdain seront coupées, celles qui descendent d’en haut, et elles s’arrêteront en un monceau. »

And it shall come to pass, when the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of Jehovah, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, even the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand in one heap.

Quand le peuple fut sorti de ses tentes pour passer le Jourdain, les prêtres qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance marchèrent devant le peuple.

And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over the Jordan, the priests that bare the ark of the covenant being before the people;

Au moment où les porteurs de l’arche arrivèrent au Jourdain et où les pieds des prêtres qui portaient l’arche plongèrent au bord de l’eau, — car le Jourdain déborde par-dessus toutes ses rives tout le temps de la moisson, —

and when they that bare the ark were come unto the Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (for the Jordan overfloweth all its banks all the time of harvest,)

alors les eaux qui descendent d’en haut s’arrêtèrent ; elles s’élevèrent en un monceau, à une très grande distance, près de la ville d’Adom, qui est à côté de Sarthan ; et celles qui descendent vers la mer de l’Arabah, la mer Salée, furent complètement coupées ; et le peuple passa vis-à-vis de Jéricho.

that the waters which came down from above stood, and rose up in one heap, a great way off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those that went down toward the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, were wholly cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

Les prêtres qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh se tinrent de pied ferme sur la terre sèche au milieu du Jourdain, pendant que tout Israël passait à sec, jusqu’à ce que toute la nation eut achevé de passer le Jourdain.

And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel passed over on dry ground, until all the nation were passed clean over the Jordan.

Chapitre 4

Lorsque toute la nation eut achevé de passer le Jourdain, Yahweh dit à Josué :

And it came to pass, when all the nation were clean passed over the Jordan, that Jehovah spake unto Joshua, saying,

« Prenez douze hommes parmi le peuple, un homme par tribu,

Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,

et donnez-leur cet ordre : De ce lieu-ci, du milieu du Jourdain, de l’endroit où les prêtres se sont tenus de pied ferme, prenez douze pierres, transportez-les avec vous et déposez-les dans le lieu où vous camperez cette nuit. »

and command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of the Jordan, out of the place where the priests` feet stood firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place, where ye shall lodge this night.

Josué appela les douze hommes qu’il avait choisis parmi les enfants d’Israël, un homme par tribu,

Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:

et il leur dit : « Passez devant l’arche de Yahweh, votre Dieu, au milieu du Jourdain, et que chacun de vous prenne une pierre sur son épaule, selon le nombre des tribus des enfants d’Israël,

and Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of Jehovah your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel;

afin que ce soit un signe au milieu de vous. Lorsque vos enfants vous demanderont un jour : Que signifient pour vous ces pierres ?

that this may be a sign among you, that, when your children ask in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?

Vous leur direz : Les eaux du Jourdain ont été coupées devant l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh ; lorsqu’elle passa le Jourdain, les eaux du Jourdain furent coupées. Et ces pierres seront à jamais un mémorial pour les enfants d’Israël. »

then ye shall say unto them, Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah; when it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

Les enfants d’Israël firent comme Josué avait ordonné. Ils prirent douze pierres du milieu du Jourdain, comme Yahweh l’avait dit à Josué, selon le nombre des tribus des enfants d’Israël, et, les ayant emportées avec eux au lieu où ils devaient passer la nuit, ils les y déposèrent.

And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as Jehovah spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.

Josué dressa douze pierres au milieu du Jourdain, à la place où s’étaient arrêtés les pieds des prêtres qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance ; et elles y sont restées jusqu’à ce jour.

And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests that bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.

Les prêtres qui portaient l’arche se tinrent au milieu du Jourdain jusqu’à l’entier accomplissement de ce que Yahweh avait ordonné à Josué de dire au peuple, selon tout ce que Moïse avait prescrit à Josué ; et le peuple se hâta de passer.

For the priests that bare the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan, until everything was finished that Jehovah commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.

Lorsque tout le peuple eut achevé de passer, l’arche de Yahweh et les prêtres passèrent devant le peuple.

And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of Jehovah passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.

Les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé passèrent en armes devant les enfants d’Israël, comme Moïse le leur avait dit.

And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:

Environ quarante mille hommes, armés pour le combat, passèrent devant Yahweh dans les plaines de Jéricho.

about forty thousand ready armed for war passed over before Jehovah unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.

En ce jour-là, Yahweh éleva Josué aux yeux de tout Israël, et ils le craignirent, comme ils avaient craint Moïse, tous les jours de sa vie.

On that day Jehovah magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

Yahweh parla à Josué en disant :

And Jehovah spake unto Joshua, saying,

« Ordonne aux prêtres qui portent l’arche du témoignage de sortir du Jourdain. »

Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Jordan.

Et Josué donna cet ordre aux prêtres : « Sortez du Jourdain. »

Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of the Jordan.

Lorsque les prêtres qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh furent sortis du milieu du Jourdain, et que la plante de leur pied se posa sur la terre sèche, les eaux du fleuve retournèrent à leur place et se répandirent comme auparavant par-dessus toutes ses rives.

And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah were come up out of the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests` feet were lifted up unto the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned unto their place, and went over all its banks, as aforetime.

Le peuple sortit du Jourdain le dixième jour du premier mois, et il campa à Galgala à l’extrémité orientale du territoire de Jéricho.

And the people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho.

Josué dressa à Galgala les douze pierres qu’ils avaient prises du Jourdain,

And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, did Joshua set up in Gilgal.

et il dit aux enfants d’Israël : « Lorsque vos enfants demanderont un jour à leurs pères : Que signifient ces pierres ?

And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?

Vous en instruirez vos enfants, en disant : Israël a passé ce Jourdain à sec.

Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.

Car Yahweh, votre Dieu, a mis à sec devant vous les eaux du Jourdain jusqu’à ce que vous eussiez passé, comme Yahweh, votre Dieu, l’avait fait à la mer Rouge, qu’il mit à sec devant nous jusqu’à ce que nous eussions passé :

For Jehovah your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as Jehovah your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were passed over;

afin que tous les peuples de la terre apprennent que la main de Yahweh est puissante, et afin que vous ayez toujours la crainte de Yahweh, votre Dieu. »

that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of Jehovah, that it is mighty; that ye may fear Jehovah your God for ever.

Chapitre 5

Lorsque tous les rois des Amorrhéens d’au delà du Jourdain, à l’occident, et tous les rois des Chananéens près de la mer, apprirent que Yahweh avait mis à sec les eaux du Jourdain devant les enfants d’Israël, jusqu’à ce que nous eussions passé, leur cœur se fondit et ils perdirent tout courage devant les enfants d’Israël.

And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, that were by the sea, heard how that Jehovah had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

Dans ce temps-là, Yahweh dit à Josué : « Fais-toi des couteaux de pierre et circoncis de nouveau les enfants d’Israël, une seconde fois. »

At that time Jehovah said unto Joshua, Make thee knives of flint, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

Josué se fit des couteaux de pierre, et il circoncit les enfants d’Israël sur la colline d’Araloth.

And Joshua made him knives of lint, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

Voici la raison pour laquelle Josué les circoncit. Tout le peuple sorti d’Égypte, les mâles, tous les hommes de guerre, étaient morts dans le désert, pendant la route, après leur sortie d’Égypte.

And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: all the people that came forth out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came forth out of Egypt.

Car tout le peuple qui sortit était circoncis ; mais tout le peuple né dans le désert, pendant la route, après la sortie d’Égypte, n’avait pas été circoncis.

For all the people that came out were circumcised; but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, they had not circumcised.

Car les enfants d’Israël marchèrent pendant quarante ans dans le désert jusqu’à ce qu’eût péri toute la nation, savoir les hommes de guerre qui étaient sortis d’Égypte et n’avaient pas écouté la voix de Yahweh, et auxquels Yahweh avait juré de ne pas leur laisser voir le pays qu’il avait promis avec serment à leurs pères de nous donner, pays où coulent le lait et le miel.

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the nation, even the men of war that came forth out of Egypt, were consumed, because they hearkened not unto the voice of Jehovah: unto whom Jehovah sware that he would not let them see the land which Jehovah sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

Il établit leurs enfants à leur place, et ce sont eux que Josué circoncit, car ils étaient incirconcis parce qu’on ne les avait pas circoncis pendant la route.

And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them did Joshua circumcise: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

Lorsqu’on eut achevé de circoncire toute la nation, ils restèrent à leur place dans le camp, jusqu’à leur guérison.

And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the nation, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.

Et Yahweh dit à Josué : « Aujourd’hui j’ai roulé de dessus vous l’opprobre de l’Égypte. » Et ce lieu reçut le nom de Galgala jusqu’à ce jour.

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of that place was called Gilgal, unto this day.

Les enfants d’Israël campèrent à Galgala, et ils firent la Pâque le quatorzième jour du mois, sur le soir, dans les plaines de Jéricho.

And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal; and they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

Ils mangèrent dès le lendemain de la Pâque, du produit du pays des pains sans levain et du grain rôti, ce jour-là même.

And they did eat of the produce of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes and parched grain, in the selfsame day.

Et la manne cessa le lendemain de la Pâque, lorsqu’ils mangèrent du produit du pays ; les enfants d’Israël n’eurent plus de manne, et ils mangèrent cette année-là des productions du pays de Chanaan. And the manna ceased on the morrow, after they had eaten of the produce of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

Comme Josué était près de Jéricho, il leva les yeux et regarda, et voici qu’un homme se tenait debout devant lui, son épée nue à la main. Josué alla vers lui et lui dit : « Es-tu pour nous, ou pour nos ennemis ? »

And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

Il répondit : « Non, mais c’est comme chef de l’armée de Yahweh que je viens maintenant. » Josué tomba le visage contre terre, se prosterna et lui dit : « Qu’est-ce que mon seigneur dit à son serviteur ? »

And he said, Nay; but [as] prince of the host of Jehovah am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?

Et le chef de l’armée de Yahweh dit à Josué : « Ôte ta chaussure de tes pieds, car le lieu sur lequel tu te tiens est saint. » Et Josué fit ainsi.

And the prince of Jehovah`s host said unto Joshua, Put off thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

Chapitre 6

Jéricho était fermée et entièrement close, à cause des enfants d’Israël ; personne n’en sortait, et personne n’y entrait.

Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.

Yahweh dit à Josué : « Vois, j’ai livré entre tes mains Jéricho et son roi, ainsi que ses vaillants hommes.

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thy hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valor.

Marchez autour de la ville, vous tous, les hommes de guerre, faites une fois le tour de la ville ; tu feras ainsi pendant six jours.

And ye shall compass the city, all the men of war, going about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.

Sept prêtres porteront devant l’arche sept trompettes retentissantes ; et le septième jour, vous ferez sept fois le tour de la ville, et les prêtres sonneront des trompettes.

And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams` horns before the ark: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.

Quand ils sonneront de la corne retentissante, et que vous entendrez le son de la trompette, tout le peuple poussera une grande clameur, et le mur de la ville s’écroulera ; alors le peuple montera, chacun devant soi. »

And it shall be, that, when they make a long blast with the ram`s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him.

Josué, fils de Nun, ayant appelé les prêtres, leur dit : « Portez l’arche de l’alliance, et que sept prêtres portent sept trompettes retentissantes devant l’arche de Yahweh. »

And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams` horns before the ark of Jehovah.

Il dit au peuple : « Passez, marchez autour de la ville, et que les hommes armés passent devant l’arche de Yahweh. »

And they said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let the armed men pass on before the ark of Jehovah.

Lorsque Josué eut parlé au peuple, les sept prêtres qui portaient les sept trompettes retentissantes devant Yahweh, passèrent et sonnèrent des trompettes, et l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh s’avançait derrière eux.

And it was so, that, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams` horns before Jehovah passed on, and blew the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah followed them.

Les hommes armés marchaient devant les prêtres qui sonnaient des trompettes, et l’arrière-garde suivait l’arche ; pendant la marche, on sonnait des trompettes.

And the armed men went before the priests that blew the trumpets, and the rearward went after the ark, [the priests] blowing the trumpets as they went.

Josué avait donné cet ordre au peuple : « Vous ne crierez point, vous ne ferez point entendre votre voix, et il ne sortira pas une parole de votre bouche, jusqu’au jour où je vous dirai : Criez ! Alors vous pousserez des cris ! »

And Joshua commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.

L’arche de Yahweh s’avança autour de la ville, et en fit une fois le tour ; puis on rentra dans le camp, où l’on passa la nuit.

So he caused the ark of Jehovah to compass the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

Josué se leva le lendemain, et les prêtres portaient l’arche de Yahweh.

And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of Jehovah.

Les sept prêtres qui portaient les sept trompettes retentissantes devant l’arche de Yahweh se mirent en marche et sonnèrent des trompettes. Les hommes armés marchaient devant eux, et l’arrière-garde suivait l’arche de Yahweh ; pendant la marche, on sonnait des trompettes.

And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams` horns before the ark of Jehovah went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; and the rearward came after the ark of Jehovah, [the priests] blowing the trumpets as they went.

Ils marchèrent, le second jour, une fois autour de la ville, et revinrent dans le camp. Ils firent de même pendant six jours.

And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.

Le septième jour, ils se levèrent, comme montait l’aurore, et ils marchèrent de la même manière sept fois autour de la ville ; ce jour-là seul ils marchèrent sept fois autour de la ville.

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on the day they compassed the city seven times.

À la septième fois, comme les prêtres sonnaient des trompettes, Josué dit au peuple : « Poussez des cris, car Yahweh vous a livré la ville.

And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for Jehovah hath given you the city.

La ville sera dévouée par anathème à Yahweh, elle et tout ce qui s’y trouve ; seule Rahab, la courtisane, vivra, elle et tous ceux qui seront avec elle dans la maison, parce qu’elle a caché les messagers que nous avions envoyés.

And the city shall be devoted, even it and all that is therein, to Jehovah: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

Mais gardez-vous de ce qui est dévoué par anathème, de peur que, en prenant quelque chose de ce que vous avez dévoué par anathème, vous ne rendiez le camp d’Israël anathème, et vous n’y mettiez le trouble.

But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when ye have devoted it, ye take of the devoted thing; so would ye make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it.

Tout l’argent et tout l’or, tous les objets d’airain et de fer seront consacrés à Yahweh et entreront dans le trésor de Yahweh. »

But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy unto Jehovah: they shall come into the treasury of Jehovah.

Le peuple poussa des cris, et les prêtres sonnèrent des trompettes. Et lorsque le peuple entendit le son de la trompette, il poussa une grande clameur, et la muraille s’écroula, et le peuple monta dans la ville, chacun devant soi. S’étant emparés de la ville,

So the people shouted, and [the priests] blew the trumpets; and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

ils livrèrent à l’anathème tout ce qui se trouvait dans la ville, hommes et femmes, enfants et vieillards, même les bœufs, les brebis et les ânes, par le tranchant de l’épée.

And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

Josué dit aux deux hommes qui avaient exploré le pays : « Entrez dans la maison de la courtisane, et faites-en sortir cette femme avec tous ceux qui lui appartiennent, comme vous le lui avez juré. »

And Joshua said unto the two men that had spied out the land, Go into the harlot`s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

Les jeunes gens, les espions, entrèrent et firent sortir Rahab, son père, sa mère, ses frères et tous ceux qui lui appartenaient ; ils firent sortir tous les gens de sa famille, et ils les mirent hors du camp d’Israël.

And the young men the spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; all her kindred also they brought out; and they set them without the camp of Israel.

Les enfants d’Israël brûlèrent la ville et tout ce qui s’y trouvait, sauf l’argent et l’or, et les objets d’airain et de fer, qu’’ils déposèrent dans le trésor de la maison de Yahweh.

And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein; only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of Jehovah.

Josué laissa la vie à Rahab, la courtisane, à la maison de son père, et à tous ceux qui lui appartenaient ; et elle a habité au milieu d’Israël jusqu’à ce jour, parce qu’elle avait caché les messagers envoyés par Josué pour explorer Jéricho.

But Rahab the harlot, and her father`s household, and all that she had, did Joshua save alive; and she dwelt in the midst of Israel unto this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

En ce temps-là Josué jura, en disant : « Maudit soit devant Yahweh l’homme qui se lèvera et rebâtira cette ville de Jéricho ! Au prix de son premier-né il en posera les fondements ; au prix de son plus jeune fils il en relèvera les portes. »

And Joshua charged them with an oath at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before Jehovah, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: with the loss of his first-born shall he lay the foundation thereof, and with the loss of his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.

Yahweh fut avec Josué, et sa renommée se répandit dans tout le pays.

So Jehovah was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.

Chapitre 7

Les enfants d’Israël commirent une infidélité au sujet de l’anathème. Achan, fils de Charmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zaré, de la tribu de Juda, prit des choses dévouées, et la colère de Yahweh s’enflamma contre les enfants d’Israël.

But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted thing; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the devoted thing: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the children of Israel.

Josué envoya de Jéricho des hommes vers Haï, qui est près de Beth-Aven, à l’orient de Béthel ; il leur dit : « Montez et explorez le pays. » Ces hommes montèrent et explorèrent Haï.

And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. And the men went up and spied out Ai.

Revenus auprès de Josué, ils lui dirent : « Que le peuple ne monte pas tout entier ! Deux mille hommes ou trois mille hommes n’ont qu’à monter et ils battront Haï ; ne fatigue pas tout le peuple pour cette ville, car ses habitants sont peu nombreux. »

And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; make not all the people to toil thither; for they are but few.

Environ trois mille hommes du peuple y montèrent, mais ils prirent la fuite devant les hommes d’Haï.

So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

Les gens d’Haï leur tuèrent environ trente-six hommes ; ils les poursuivirent depuis la porte jusqu’à Sabarim, et les battirent à la descente. Et le cœur du peuple se fondit et il perdit tout courage.

And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men; and they chased them [from] before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them at the descent; and the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

Josué déchira ses vêtements et se prosterna, le visage contre terre, devant l’arche de Yahweh, jusqu’au soir, lui et les anciens d’Israël, et ils jetèrent de la poussière sur leur tête.

And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of Jehovah until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads.

Josué dit : « Ah ! Seigneur Yahweh, pourquoi avez-vous fait passer le Jourdain à ce peuple, pour nous livrer entre les mains des Amorrhéens, afin de nous faire périr ? Que n’avons-nous su rester de l’autre côté du Jourdain !

And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? would that we had been content and dwelt beyond the Jordan!

De grâce, Seigneur, que dirai-je, après qu’Israël a tourné le dos devant ses ennemis ?

Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel hath turned their backs before their enemies!

Les Chananéens et tous les habitants du pays l’apprendront ; ils nous envelopperont et feront disparaître notre nom de la terre. Et que ferez-vous pour votre grand nom ? »

For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will compass us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do for thy great name?

Yahweh dit à Josué : « Lève-toi ! Pourquoi es-tu ainsi tombé sur ta face ?

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore art thou thus fallen upon thy face?

Israël a péché, jusqu’à transgresser mon alliance que je leur ai prescrite d’observer, jusqu’à prendre des choses vouées par l’anathème, à les dérober, à mentir et à les cacher dans leurs bagages !

Israel hath sinned; yea, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: yea, they have even taken of the devoted thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also; and they have even put it among their own stuff.

Aussi les enfants d’Israël ne peuvent tenir devant leurs ennemis ; mais ils tournent le dos devant leurs ennemis, car ils sont devenus anathème. Je ne serai plus avec vous désormais, si vous n’ôtez pas l’anathème du milieu de vous.

Therefore the children of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they are become accursed: I will not be with you any more, except ye destroy the devoted thing from among you.

Lève-toi, sanctifie le peuple et dis-leur : Sanctifiez-vous pour demain ; car ainsi parle Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël : Il y a un anathème au milieu de toi, Israël ; tu ne pourras point tenir devant tes ennemis, jusqu’à ce que vous ayez ôté l’anathème du milieu de vous.

Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, There is a devoted thing in the midst of thee, O Israel; thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the devoted thing from among you.

Vous vous approcherez le matin selon vos tribus, et la tribu que Yahweh aura saisie s’approchera par familles, et la famille que Yahweh aura saisie s’approchera par maisons, et la maison que Yahweh aura saisie s’approchera par têtes.

In the morning therefore ye shall be brought near by your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which Jehovah taketh shall come near by families; and the family which Jehovah shall take shall come near by households; and the household which Jehovah shall take shall come near man by man.

Celui qui sera saisi comme atteint par l’anathème sera consumé par le feu, lui et tout ce qui lui appartient, parce qu’il transgresse l’alliance de Yahweh et commet une infamie en Israël. »

And it shall be, that he that is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath; because he hath transgressed the covenant of Jehovah, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

Le lendemain, Josué se leva de bon matin et fit approcher Israël selon ses tribus, et la tribu de Juda fut saisie.

So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel near by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

Il fit approcher les familles de Juda, et la famille de Zaré fut saisie. Il fit approcher la famille de Zaré par maisons, et Zabdi fut saisi.

and he brought near the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zerahites: and he brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:

Il fit approcher la maison de Zabdi par têtes, et Achan, fils de Charmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zaré, de la tribu de Juda, fut saisi.

and he brought near his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

Josué dit à Achan : « Mon fils, donne gloire, je te prie, à Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, et rends-lui hommage. Avoue-moi ce que tu as fait, ne me le cache point. »

And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to Jehovah, the God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

Achan répondit à Josué et dit : « C’est la vérité ; c’est moi qui ai péché contre Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël ; voici ce que j’ai fait :

And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Of a truth I have sinned against Jehovah, the God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

J’ai vu parmi les dépouilles un beau manteau de Sennaar, deux cents sicles d’argent, et un lingot d’or du poids de cinquante sicles ; je les ai convoités et je les ai pris ; ils sont cachés dans la terre au milieu de ma tente, et l’argent est dessous. »

when I saw among the spoil a goodly Babylonish mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

Josué envoya des messagers qui coururent à la tente, et voici, les objets étaient cachés dans la tente d’Achan, et l’argent était dessous.

So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

Les ayant pris du milieu de la tente, ils les apportèrent à Josué et à tous les enfants d’Israël, et les déposèrent devant Yahweh.

And they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel; and they laid them down before Jehovah.

Josué et tout Israël avec lui prirent Achan, fils de Zaré, l’argent, le manteau, le lingot d’or, les fils et les filles d’Achan, ses bœufs, ses ânes, ses brebis, sa tente et tout ce qui lui appartenait, et il les firent monter dans la vallée d’Achor.

And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them up unto the valley of Achor.

Là Josué dit : « Pourquoi nous as-tu troublés ? Yahweh te troublera aujourd’hui. » Et tout Israël le lapida. On les consuma par le feu, et on les lapida.

And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? Jehovah shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.

Et on éleva sur Achan un grand monceau de pierres, qui subsiste encore aujourd’hui. Et Yahweh revint de l’ardeur de sa colère. — À cause de cet événement, on a appelé ce lieu vallée d’Achor jusqu’à ce jour.

And they raised over him a great heap of stones, unto this day; and Jehovah turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

Chapitre 8

Yahweh dit à Josué : « Ne crains point et ne t’effraie point. Prends avec toi tous les hommes de guerre, lève-toi et monte contre Haï. Vois, j’ai livré entre tes mains le roi d’Haï et son peuple, sa ville et son territoire.

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land;

Tu traiteras Haï et son roi comme tu as traité Jéricho et son roi ; seulement vous pillerez pour vous son butin et son bétail. Dresse une embuscade derrière la ville. »

And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: set thee an ambush for the city behind it.

Josué se leva avec tous les gens de guerre, pour monter contre Haï. Josué choisit trente mille hommes vaillants, et les fit partir de nuit.

So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them forth by night.

Il leur donna cet ordre : « Soyez sur vos gardez : vous vous mettrez en embuscade derrière la ville, mais sans vous éloigner beaucoup de la ville, et tous, tenez-vous prêts.

And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city; go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

Moi, et tout le peuple qui est avec moi, nous nous approcherons de la ville ; et quand ils sortiront au-devant de nous, comme la première fois, nous fuirons devant eux.

and I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city. And it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them;

Ils sortiront pour nous poursuivre, jusqu’à ce que nous les ayons attirés loin de la ville, car ils diront : Ils fuient devant nous, comme la première fois. Et nous fuirons devant eux.

and they will come out after us, till we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: so we will flee before them;

Alors, sortant de l’embuscade, vous vous emparerez de la ville ; Yahweh, votre Dieu, la livrera entre vos mains.

and ye shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city: for Jehovah your God will deliver it into your hand.

Quand vous aurez pris la ville, vous la brûlerez ; vous agirez selon la parole de Yahweh. Voyez : je vous ai donné mes ordres. »

And it shall be, when ye have seized upon the city, that ye shall set the city on fire; according to the word of Jehovah shall ye do: see, I have commanded you.

Josué les fit partir, et ils allèrent se poster en embuscade entre Béthel et Haï, à l’occident d’Haï. Quant à Josué, il passa cette nuit-là au milieu du peuple.

And Joshua sent them forth; and they went to the ambushment, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

Josué se leva de bon matin et, ayant passé le peuple en revue, il monta à la tête du peuple, lui et les anciens d’Israël, contre Haï.

And Joshua arose up early in the morning, and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

Tous les hommes de guerre qui étaient avec lui montèrent et s’approchèrent ; arrivés en face d’Haï, ils campèrent au nord de la ville, ayant la vallée entre eux et Haï.

And all the people, [even] the [men of] war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and encamped on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between him and Ai.

Josué prit environ cinq mille hommes, et les mit en embuscade entre Béthel et Haï, à l’occident de la ville.

And he took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of the city.

Lorsque le peuple eut ainsi disposé tout le camp, qui était au nord de la ville, et son embuscade à l’occident de la ville, Josué s’avança durant cette nuit au milieu de la vallée.

So they set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers-in-wait that were on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

Dès que le roi de Haï vit cela, les hommes de la ville se levèrent en hâte de bon matin, et sortirent à la rencontre d’Israël pour le combattre ; le roi s’avança avec tout son peuple vers le lieu convenu, en face de la plaine, ne sachant pas qu’il y avait derrière la ville une embuscade dressée contre lui.

And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he knew not that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

Josué et tout Israël se laissèrent battre devant eux, et ils s’enfuirent par le chemin du désert.

And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

Alors tout le peuple qui était dans la ville se rassembla pour les poursuivre ; ils poursuivirent Josué et se laissèrent attirer loin de la ville.

And all the people that were in the city were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

Il ne resta pas un homme dans Haï et dans Béthel qui ne sortît pour poursuivre Israël ; laissant la ville ouverte, ils poursuivirent Israël.

And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

Yahweh dit à Josué : « Étends vers Haï le javelot que tu as à la main, car je vais la livrer en ton pouvoir. » Et Josué étendit vers la ville le javelot qu’il avait à la main.

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Stretch out the javelin that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thy hand. And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

Dès qu’il eut étendu sa main, les hommes de l’embuscade se levèrent en hâte du lieu où ils étaient et, prenant leur course, ils entrèrent dans la ville et l’occupèrent ; et ils se hâtèrent de mettre le feu à la ville.

And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and set the city on fire.

Les hommes d’Haï, regardant derrière eux, aperçurent la fumée de la ville qui montait vers le ciel, et ils ne purent plus se sauver d’aucun côté, le peuple qui fuyait vers le désert se retournant contre ceux qui le poursuivaient.

And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

Et Josué et tout Israël, voyant la ville prise par les hommes de l’embuscade, et la fumée de la ville qui montait, se retournèrent et battirent les hommes d’Haï.

And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

Les autres sortirent de la ville au-devant d’eux, et les hommes d’Haï se trouvèrent enveloppés par les Israélites, par les uns d’un côté, par les autres de l’autre côté. Et les Israélites les battirent, sans leur laisser ni un survivant ni un fugitif ;

And the others came forth out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

ils prirent vivant le roi d’Haï et l’amenèrent à Josué.

And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

Lorsqu’Israël eut achevé de tuer tous les habitants d’Haï dans la campagne, dans le désert, où ils l’avaient poursuivi, et que tous furent jusqu’au dernier passés au fil de l’épée, tout Israël revint dans la ville et la passa au fil de l’épée.

And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they pursued them, and they were all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Israel returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

Le nombre total de ceux qui périrent en ce jour fut de douze mille, tant hommes que femmes, tous gens d’Haï.

And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

Josué ne retira pas sa main qu’il tenait étendue avec le javelot, jusqu’à ce qu’il eût traité comme anathème tous les habitants d’Haï.

For Joshua drew not back his hand, wherewith he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

Les Israélites prirent seulement pour eux le bétail et le butin de cette ville, selon l’ordre de Yahweh qu’il avait prescrit à Josué.

Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for prey unto themselves, according unto the word of Jehovah which he commanded Joshua.

Josué brûla Haï, et en fit pour toujours un monceau de ruines, qui subsiste encore aujourd’hui.

So Joshua burnt Ai, and made it a heap for ever, even a desolation, unto this day.

Il fit pendre à un arbre le roi d’Haï et l’y laissa jusqu’au soir. Au coucher du soleil, Josué donna l’ordre de descendre son cadavre de l’arbre ; on le jeta à l’entrée de la porte de la ville, et on éleva sur lui un grand monceau de pierres, qui subsiste jusqu’à ce jour. 3. Chap. viii, 30-35 : À Sichem, confirmation de l’alliance.

And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until the eventide: and at the going down of the sun Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, and cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised thereon a great heap of stones, unto this day.

Alors Josué bâtit un autel à Yahweh, Dieu d’Israël, sur le mont Hébal,

Then Joshua built an altar unto Jehovah, the God of Israel, in mount Ebal,

selon l’ordre que Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, avait donné aux enfants d’Israël, comme il est écrit dans le livre de la loi de Moïse, un autel de pierres brutes, sur lesquelles on n’avait pas brandi le fer. Ils y offrirent des holocaustes à Yahweh, et firent des sacrifices pacifiques.

as Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of unhewn stones, upon which no man had lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt-offerings unto Jehovah, and sacrificed peace-offerings.

Là Josué écrivit sur les pierres une copie de la loi que Moïse avait écrite en présence des enfants d’Israël.

And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote, in the presence of the children of Israel.

Tout Israël, ses anciens, ses officiers et ses juges, se tenaient des deux côtés de l’arche, devant les prêtres lévitiques, qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh, les étrangers aussi bien que les enfants d’Israël, une moitié du côté du mont Garizim, une moitié du côté du mont Hébal, selon l’ordre que Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, avait donné auparavant de bénir le peuple d’Israël.

And all Israel, and their elders and officers, and their judges, stood on this side of the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, as well the sojourner as the homeborn; half of them in front of mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of Jehovah had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.

Puis Josué lut toutes les paroles de la loi, la bénédiction et la malédiction, suivant tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi.

And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

Pas un mot de tout ce que Moïse avait prescrit que n’ait lu Josué en présence de toute l’assemblée d’Israël, des femmes et des enfants, et des étrangers qui vivaient au milieu d’eux.

There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the little ones, and the sojourners that were among them.

Chapitre 9

À la nouvelle de ces événements, tous les rois qui étaient au delà du Jourdain, dans la montagne et dans le bas pays, et sur toute la côte de la grande mer, vis-à-vis du Liban, les Héthéens, les Amorrhéens, les Chananéens, les Phérézéens, les Hévéens et les Jébuséens

And it came to pass, when all the kings that were beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

s’unirent ensemble pour combattre Josué et Israël d’un commun accord.

that they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

Les habitants de Gabaon, lorsqu’ils apprirent comment Josué avait traité Jéricho et Haï,

But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

eurent, de leur côté, recours à la ruse. Ils se mirent en route, avec des provisions de voyage. Ils avaient pris de vieux sacs sur leurs ânes et de vieilles outres à vin déchirées et recousues ;

they also did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-skins, old and rent and bound up,

ils avaient à leurs pieds de vieilles sandales rapiécées, et sur eux de vieux vêtements ; tout le pain qu’ils portaient pour leur nourriture était desséché et en miettes.

and old and patched shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and was become mouldy.

Ils allèrent auprès de Josué, au camp de Galgala, et ils lui dirent, à lui et à tous les hommes d’Israël : « Nous venons d’un pays éloigné, et maintenant faites alliance avec nous. »

And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We are come from a far country: now therefore make ye a covenant with us.

Les hommes d’Israël répondirent à ces Hévéens : « Peut-être que vous habitez au milieu de nous ; comment pourrions-nous faire alliance avec vous ? »

And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a covenant with you?

Il dirent à Josué : « Nous sommes tes serviteurs. » Josué leur dit : « Qui êtes-vous et d’où venez-vous ? »

And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

Ils lui dirent : « Tes serviteurs viennent d’un pays très éloigné, à cause du nom de Yahweh, ton Dieu ; car nous avons entendu parler de lui, de tout ce qu’il a fait en Égypte,

And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of Jehovah thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

et comment il a traité les deux rois des Amorrhéens au delà du Jourdain, Séhon, roi de Hésebon, et Og, roi de Basan, qui habitait à Astaroth.

and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

Et nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont dit : Prenez avec vous des provisions pour le voyage, allez au-devant d’eux et dites-leur : Nous sommes vos serviteurs, et maintenant faites alliance avec nous.

And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: and now make ye a covenant with us.

Voici notre pain : il était chaud quand nous en avons fait provision dans nos maisons, le jour où nous sommes partis pour venir vers vous, et maintenant le voilà desséché et en miettes.

This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and is become mouldy:

Ces outres à vin, que nous avons remplies toutes neuves, les voilà déchirées ; nos vêtements et nos sandales se sont usés par la grande longueur du voyage. »

and these wine-skins, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they are rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

Les hommes d’Israël prirent de leurs provisions, sans consulter la bouche de Yahweh ;

And the men took of their provision, and asked not counsel at the mouth of Jehovah.

et Josué leur accorda la paix et conclut avec eux une alliance portant qu’on leur laisserait la vie ; et les princes de l’assemblée le leur jurèrent.

And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

Trois jours après la conclusion de l’alliance, les enfants d’Israël apprirent qu’ils étaient leurs voisins et qu’ils habitaient au milieu d’eux.

And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them.

Les enfants d’Israël partirent donc, et arrivèrent à leurs villes le troisième jour ; leurs villes étaient Gabaon, Caphira, Béroth et Cariathiarim.

And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.

Ils ne les frappèrent point de l’épée, à cause du serment que les princes de l’assemblée leur avaient fait au nom de Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël ; mais toute l’assemblée murmura contre les princes.

And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by Jehovah, the God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

Tous les princes dirent alors à toute l’assemblée : « Nous leur avons fait un serment par Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël ; et maintenant, nous ne pouvons les toucher.

But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by Jehovah, the God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

Voici comment nous les traiterons : nous leur laisserons la vie, pour ne pas attirer sur nous la colère de Yahweh, par suite du serment que nous leur avons fait.

This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

Qu’ils vivent donc, » leur disent les princes. Ils furent employés à couper le bois et à puiser l’eau pour toute l’assemblée, comme les princes le leur avaient dit.

And the princes said unto them, Let them live: so they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation, as the princes had spoken unto them.

Josué fit appeler les Gabaonites et leur parla ainsi : « Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés, en disant : Nous sommes très éloignés de vous, tandis que vous habitez au milieu de nous ?

And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

Maintenant, vous êtes maudits et personne de vous ne manquera d’être esclave, coupant le bois et puisant l’eau pour la maison de mon Dieu. »

Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall never fail to be of you bondmen, both hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

Ils répondirent à Josué en disant : « C’est qu’on avait rapporté à tes serviteurs l’ordre donné par Yahweh ton Dieu, à Moïse, son serviteur, de vous livrer tout le pays et d’exterminer tous les habitants du pays devant vous. Et nous avons éprouvé à votre approche une grande crainte pour nos vies ; c’est pourquoi nous avons agi de cette manière.

And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that Jehovah thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

Maintenant nous voici entre tes mains ; traite-nous comme il te semblera bon et juste de nous traiter. »

And now, behold, we are in thy hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

Josué agit à leur égard ainsi qu’il l’avait dit ; il les délivra de la main des enfants d’Israël, pour qu’ils ne les fissent pas mourir.

And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

Josué les destina dès ce jour à couper le bois et à puiser l’eau pour l’assemblée et pour l’autel de Yahweh, dans le lieu que Yahweh choisirait : ce qu’ils font encore aujourd’hui.

And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

Chapitre 10

Adonisédec, roi de Jérusalem, apprit que Josué s’était emparé d’Haï et l’avait dévouée par anathème, qu’il avait traité Haï et son roi comme il avait traité Jéricho et son roi, et que les habitants de Gabaon, ayant fait la paix avec Israël, étaient au milieu d’eux.

Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

Il eut alors une grande crainte ; car Gabaon était une grande ville, comme une des villes royales, plus grande même qu’Haï, et tous ses hommes étaient vaillants.

that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

Adonisédec, roi de Jérusalem, envoya dire à Oham, roi d’Hébron, à Pharam, roi de Jérimoth, à Japhia, roi de Lachis, et à Dabir, roi d’Eglon :

Wherefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

« Montez vers moi et venez à mon aide, afin que nous frappions Gabaon, car elle a fait la paix avec Josué et avec les enfants d’Israël. »

Come up unto me, and help me, and let us smite Gibeon; for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

Ainsi cinq rois des Amorrhéens, le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d’Hébron, le roi de Jérimoth, le roi de Lachis et le roi d’Eglon, se rassemblèrent et montèrent avec toutes leurs armées ; ils établirent leur camp près de Gabaon et l’assiégèrent.

Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.

Les gens de Gabaon envoyèrent dire à Josué, au camp de Galgala : « Ne refuse pas ta main à tes serviteurs, hâte-toi de monter vers nous, délivre-nous, donne-nous du secours ; car tous les rois des Amorrhéens qui habitent la montagne se sont ligués contre nous. »

And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country are gathered together against us.

Josué monta de Galgala, lui et tous les gens de guerre avec lui, et tous les vaillants guerriers.

So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.

Yahweh dit à Josué : « Ne les crains point, car je les ai livrés entre tes mains, et pas un d’eux ne tiendra devant toi. »

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thy hands; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

Josué vint sur eux subitement ; il avait monté de Galgala toute la nuit.

Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly; [for] he went up from Gilgal all the night.

Et Yahweh jeta sur eux le trouble devant Israël ; Israël leur infligea une grande défaite près de Gabaon, les poursuivit sur le chemin qui monte à Béthoron, et les battit jusqu’à Azéca et Macéda.

And Jehovah discomfited them before Israel, and he slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

Comme ils fuyaient devant Israël, à la descente de Béthoron, Yahweh fit tomber du ciel sur eux de grosses pierres jusqu’à Azéca, et ils moururent ; ceux qui moururent par les pierres de grêle furent plus nombreux que ceux qui furent tués par l’épée des enfants d’Israël.

And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

Alors Josué parla à Yahweh, le jour où Yahweh livra les Amorrhéens aux enfants d’Israël, et il dit à la vue d’Israël : Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gabaon, et toi, lune, sur la vallée d’Ajalon !

Then spake Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; And thou, Moon, in the valley of Aijalon.

Et le soleil s’arrêta, et la lune se tint immobile, jusqu’à ce que la nation se fut vengée de ses ennemis. Cela n’est-il pas écrit dans le livre du Juste ? Et le soleil s’arrêta au milieu du ciel, et ne se hâta point de se coucher, presque un jour entier.

And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, Until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

Il n’y eut pas, ni avant ni après, de jour comme celui-là, où Yahweh obéit à la voix d’un homme ; car Yahweh combattait pour Israël.

And there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah hearkened unto the voice of a man: for Jehovah fought for Israel.

Et Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, retourna au camp à Galgala.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

Les cinq rois s’enfuirent et se cachèrent dans la caverne, à Macéda.

And these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.

On le rapporta à Josué, en disant : « Les cinq rois ont été trouvés cachés dans la caverne à Macéda. »

And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.

Josué dit : « Roulez de grosses pierres à l’entrée de la caverne, et mettez-y des hommes pour les garder.

And Joshua said, Roll great stones unto the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to keep them:

Et vous, ne vous arrêtez pas ; poursuivez vos ennemis et frappez-les en queue ; ne les laissez pas entrer dans leurs villes, car Yahweh, votre Dieu, les a livrés entre vos mains. »

but stay not ye; pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for Jehovah your God hath delivered them into your hand.

Lorsque Josué et les enfants d’Israël eurent achevé de leur infliger une très grande défaite jusqu’à les exterminer, ceux qui purent s’échapper s’étant réfugiés dans les villes fortifiées,

And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,

tout le peuple revint tranquillement au camp, vers Josué, à Macéda, sans que personne remuât la langue contre les enfants d’Israël.

that all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

Josué dit : « Ouvrez l’entrée de la caverne, faites sortir, pour me les amener, ces cinq rois de la caverne. »

Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth those five kings unto me out of the cave.

Ils firent ainsi, et lui amenèrent les cinq rois, qu’ils avaient fait sortir de la caverne, le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d’Hébron, le roi de Jérimoth, le roi de Lachis et le roi d’Eglon.

And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

Lorsqu’ils eurent fait sortir ces rois devant Josué, Josué appela tous les hommes d’Israël et dit aux chefs des gens de guerre qui l’avaient accompagné : « Approchez-vous, mettez vos pieds sur le cou de ces rois. » Ils s’approchèrent et mirent leurs pieds sur leurs cous.

And it came to pass, when they brought forth those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the chiefs of the men of war that went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

Et Josué leur dit : « Ne craignez point et ne vous effrayez point, soyez fermes et courageux, car c’est ainsi que Yahweh traitera tous vos ennemis contre lesquels vous combattez. »

And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage: for thus shall Jehovah do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

Après cela Josué les frappa de l’épée et les fit mourir ; il les pendit à cinq arbres, et ils y restèrent pendus jusqu’au soir.

And afterward Joshua smote them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

Vers le coucher du soleil, Josué les fit descendre des arbres ; on les jeta dans la caverne où ils s’étaient cachés, et l’on mit à l’entrée de la caverne de grosses pierres, qui y sont restées jusqu’à ce jour même.

And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, unto this very day.

Le même jour, Josué s’empara de Macéda et la frappa, elle et son roi, du tranchant de l’épée ; il dévoua par anathème la ville et tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient, sans laisser échapper personne, et il traita le roi de Macéda comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.

And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof: he utterly destroyed them and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Macéda à Lebna, et il attaqua Lebna.

And Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

Yahweh la livra aussi, avec son roi, entre les mains d’Israël, et il la frappa du tranchant de l’épée, elle et tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient, sans en laisser échapper aucun, et il traita son roi comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.

and Jehovah delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining in it; and he did unto the king thereof as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Lebna à Lachis ; il établit son camp devant elle et l’attaqua.

And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

Et Yahweh livra Lachis entre les mains d’Israël, qui la prit le second jour, et la frappa du tranchant de l’épée, elle et tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient, comme il avait fait pour Lebna. —

and Jehovah delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel; and he took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

Alors Horam, roi de Gaser, monta pour secourir Lachis ; Josué le battit, lui et son peuple, sans laisser échapper personne.

Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Lachis à Eglon ; ils établirent leur camp devant elle et l’attaquèrent.

And Joshua passed from Lachish, and all Israel with him, unto Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it;

Ils la prirent le même jour, et la frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée ; tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient, Josué les dévoua par anathème ce jour-là, selon tout ce qu’il avait fait pour Lachis.

and they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, monta d’Églon à Hébron, et ils l’attaquèrent.

And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:

L’ayant prise, ils la frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée, elle, son roi, toutes les villes de sa dépendance et tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient, sans laisser échapper personne, comme Josué avait fait pour Eglon ; et il la dévoua par anathème, avec tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient.

and they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls that were therein.

Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, se tourna vers Dabir, et il l’attaqua.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it:

Il la prit, elle, son roi et toutes les villes de sa dépendance ; et ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée, et ils dévouèrent par anathème tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient, sans laisser échapper personne. Josué traita Dabir et son roi comme il avait traité Hébron, et comme il avait traité Lebna et son roi.

and he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to the king thereof.

Josué frappa tout le pays : la Montagne, le Négéb, le bas pays et les coteaux, avec tous leurs rois, sans laisser échapper personne, dévouant par anathème tout ce qui avait vie, comme l’avait ordonné Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël.

So Joshua smote all the land, the hill-country, and the South, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded.

Josué les battit de Cadès-Barné à Gaza, et tout le pays de Gosen jusqu’à Gabaon.

And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

Josué prit tous ces rois et tout leur pays dans une seule expédition, car Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, combattait pour Israël.

And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because Jehovah, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.

Puis Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, retourna au camp, à Galgala.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

Chapitre 11

Jabin, roi d’Asor, ayant appris ces choses, envoya un message à Jobab, roi de Madon, au roi de Séméron, au roi d’Achsaph,

And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor heard thereof, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,

aux rois qui étaient au nord dans la montagne et dans l’Arabah, au sud du Cénéreth, dans le bas pays et sur les hauteurs de Dor à l’occident,

and to the kings that were on the north, in the hill-country, and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west,

aux Chananéens de l’orient et de l’occident, aux Amorrhéens, aux Héthéens, aux Phérézéens, aux Jébuséens dans la montagne, et aux Hévéens du pied de l’Hermon dans le pays de Maspha.

to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill-country, and the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

Ils sortirent, eux et toutes leurs armées avec eux, peuple innombrable comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer, avec une grande multitude de chevaux et de chars.

And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea-shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.

Tous ces rois se rassemblèrent et vinrent camper ensemble près des eaux de Mérom, pour combattre Israël.

And all these kings met together; and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel.

Yahweh dit à Josué : « Ne les crains point, car demain, à cette heure-ci, je les livrerai tous transpercés devant Israël. Tu couperas les jarrets à leurs chevaux et tu livreras au feu leurs chars. »

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them; for to-morrow at this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hock their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.

Josué, et tous les hommes de guerre avec lui, arrivèrent à eux à l’improviste, près des eaux de Mérom, et ils se précipitèrent sur eux.

So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly, and fell upon them.

Yahweh les livra entre les mains d’Israël, qui les battit et les poursuivit jusqu’à Sidon la grande, jusqu’aux eaux de Maséréphoth et jusqu’à la vallée de Maspha vers l’orient ; il les battit, sans en laisser échapper un seul.

And Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they smote them, and chased them unto great Sidon, and unto Misrephoth-maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.

Josué les traita comme Yahweh le lui avait dit : il coupa les jarrets à leurs chevaux et il livra au feu leurs chars.

And Joshua did unto them as Jehovah bade him: he hocked their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

En ce même temps, Josué revint et prit Asor, et il frappa son roi de l’épée ; car Asor était autrefois la capitale de tous ces royaumes.

And Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.

Les enfants d’Israël frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient, en les dévouant par anathème ; il ne resta rien de ce qui avait vie, et l’on brûla Asor.

And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them; there was none left that breathed: and he burnt Hazor with fire.

Josué prit toutes les villes de ces rois et tous leurs rois, et il les frappa du tranchant de l’épée, les dévouant par anathème, comme l’avait ordonné Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh.

And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and he smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; as Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded.

Mais Israël ne brûla aucune des villes situées sur les collines, à l’exception seulement d’Asor, que brûla Josué.

But as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.

Et tout le butin de ces villes, et leur bétail, les enfants d’Israël le pillèrent pour eux ; mais ils frappèrent tous les hommes du tranchant de l’épée, jusqu’à ce qu’ils les eussent détruits, sans rien laisser de ce qui avait vie.

And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any that breathed.

Ce que Yahweh avait ordonné à Moïse, son serviteur, Moïse l’avait ordonné à Josué, et Josué l’exécuta ; il ne négligea rien de ce que Yahweh avait ordonné à Moïse.

As Jehovah commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua: and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that Jehovah commanded Moses.

C’est ainsi que Josué s’empara de tout ce pays, de la Montagne, de tout le Négéb, de tout le district de Gosen, du bas pays, de l’Arabah, de la montagne d’Israël et de ses plaines,

So Joshua took all that land, the hill-country, and all the South, and all the land of Goshen, and the lowland, and the Arabah, and the hill-country of Israel, and the lowland of the same;

depuis la montagne nue qui s’élève vers Séïr jusqu’à Baal-Gad, dans la vallée du Liban, au pied du mont Hermon ; il prit tous leurs rois, les frappa et les mit à mort.

from mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and put them to death.

Pendant de longs jours Josué fit la guerre contre tous ces rois.

Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.

Il n’y eut aucune ville qui fit la paix avec les enfants d’Israël, excepté les Hévéens qui habitaient à Gabaon ; ils les prirent toutes par la force des armes.

There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: they took all in battle.

Car c’était le dessein de Yahweh que ces peuples endurcissent leur cœur pour faire la guerre à Israël, afin qu’Israël les dévouât par anathème, sans qu’il y eût pour eux de miséricorde, et qu’il les détruisit, comme Yahweh l’avait ordonné à Moïse.

For it was of Jehovah to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might have no favor, but that he might destroy them, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

Dans le même temps, Josué se mit en marche et il extermina les Enacim de la Montagne, d’Hébron, de Dabir et d’Anab, de toute la montagne de Juda et de toute la montagne d’Israël ; Josué les dévoua par anathème avec leurs villes.

And Joshua came at that time, and cut off the Anakim from the hill-country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill-country of Judah, and from all the hill-country of Israel: Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.

Il ne resta plus d’Enacim dans le pays des enfants d’Israël ; il n’en resta qu’à Gaza, à Geth et à Azoth.

There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, did some remain.

Josué s’empara de tout le pays, selon tout ce que Yahweh avait dit à Moïse ; et Josué le donna en héritage à Israël, par portions, selon leurs tribus. Et le pays se reposa de la guerre.

So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Jehovah spake unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land had rest from war.

Chapitre 12

Voici les rois du pays que les enfants d’Israël battirent et dont ils occupèrent le pays de l’autre côté du Jourdain, vers le soleil levant, depuis le torrent d’Arnon jusqu’au mont Hermon, et toute l’Arabah à l’orient du fleuve :

Now these are the kings of the land, whom the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising, from the valley of the Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the Arabah eastward:

Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, résidant à Hésebon. Sa domination s’étendait depuis Aroër, qui est sur le bord du torrent d’Arnon, et, à partir du milieu de la vallée, sur la moitié de Galaad, jusqu’au torrent de Jacob, frontière des enfants d’Ammon ;

Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and [the city that is in] the middle of the valley, and half Gilead, even unto the river Jabbok, the border of the children of Ammon;

sur l’Arabah, jusqu’à la mer de Cénéreth à l’orient, et sur la mer de l’Arabah, la mer Salée, à l’orient, vers Bethsimoth ; et du côté du midi au pied des pentes du mont Phasga.

and the Arabah unto the sea of Chinneroth, eastward, and unto the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, eastward, the way to Beth-jeshimoth; and on the south, under the slopes of Pisgah:

Puis le territoire d’Og, roi de Basan, d’entre les restes des Rephaïm, résidant à Astaroth et à Edraï.

and the border of Og king of Bashan, of the remnant of the Rephaim, who dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,

Sa domination s’étendait sur la montagne d’Hermon, sur Salécha, sur tout Basan jusqu’à la frontière des Gesuriens et des Machatiens, et jusqu’à la moitié de Galaad, territoire de Séhon, roi d’Hésébon.

and ruled in mount Hermon, and in Salecah, and in all Bashan, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.

Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, et les enfants d’Israël les battirent ; et Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, donna leur pays en propriété aux Rubénites, aux Gadites et à la moitié de la tribu de Manassé.

Moses the servant of Jehovah and the children of Israel smote them: and Moses the servant of Jehovah gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

Voici les rois que Josué et les enfants d’Israël battirent de ce côté du Jourdain, à l’occident, depuis Baal-Gad, dans la vallée du Liban, jusqu’à la montagne nue qui s’élève vers Séïr. Josué donna ce pays en propriété aux tribus d’Israël selon leurs familles,

And these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the children of Israel smote beyond the Jordan westward, from Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon even unto mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir; and Joshua gave it unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;

dans la montagne, dans le bas pays, sur les coteaux, dans le désert et dans le Négeb : pays des Héthéens, des Amorrhéens, des Chananéens, des Phérézéens, des Hévéens et des Jébuséens.

in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and in the Arabah, and in the slopes, and in the wilderness, and in the South; the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:

Ce sont : le roi de Jéricho, un ; le roi d’Haï, près de Béthel, un ;

the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;

le roi de Jérusalem, un ; le roi d’Hébron, un ;

the king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;

le roi de Jérimoth, un ; le roi de Lachis, un ;

the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;

le roi d’Eglon, un ; le roi de Gazer, un ;

the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;

the king of Tirzah, one: all the kings thirty and one.

Chapitre 13

Josué était vieux, avancé en âge ; Yahweh lui dit : « Tu es devenu vieux, tu es avancé en âge, et il reste encore un très grand pays à conquérir.

Now Joshua was old and well stricken in years; and Jehovah said unto him, Thou art old and well stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

Voici le pays qui reste : tous les districts des Philistins et tout le territoire des Gessuriens,

This is the land that yet remaineth: all the regions of the Philistines, and all the Geshurites;

depuis le Schichor qui coule à l’orient de l’Égypte, jusqu’à la frontière d’Accaron vers le nord, contrée qui doit être réputée Chananéenne ; les cinq princes des Philistins, celui de Gaza, celui d’Azoth, celui d’Ascalon, celui de Geth et celui d’Accaron ; les Hévéens

from the Shihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the border of Ekron northward, [which] is reckoned to the Canaanites; the five lords of the Philistines; the Gazites, and the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avvim,

au midi ; tout le pays des Chananéens, et Maara qui est aux Sidoniens, jusqu’à Aphec, jusqu’à la frontière des Amorrhéens ;

on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongeth to the Sidonians, unto Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;

le pays des Gébalites, et tout le Liban vers le soleil levant, depuis Baal-Gad au pied du mont Hermon jusqu’à l’entrée de Hamath ;

and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baal-gad under mount Hermon unto the entrance of Hamath;

tous les habitants de la montagne, depuis le Liban jusqu’aux eaux de Maséréphoth, savoir tous les Sidoniens : je les chasserai de devant les enfants d’Israël. Seulement partage par le sort ces pays en héritage à Israël, comme je l’ai commandé.

all the inhabitants of the hill-country from Lebanon unto Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians; them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only allot thou it unto Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

Et maintenant répartis ce pays en héritage aux neuf tribus et à la demi-tribu de Manassé. » 2. Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

Avec l’autre moitié, les Rubénites et les Gadites ont reçu leur héritage, que Moïse leur a donné de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à l’orient, comme le leur a donné Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh :

With him the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of Jehovah gave them:

depuis Aroër sur le bord du torrent de l’Arnon, et depuis la ville qui est au milieu de la vallée, toute la plaine de Médaba jusqu’à Dibon ;

from Aroer, that is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;

toutes les villes de Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui régnait à Hésebon, jusqu’à la frontière des enfants d’Ammon ;

and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon;

Galaad, le territoire des Gessuriens et des Machatiens, toute la montagne d’Hermon, et tout Basan, jusqu’à Salécha :

and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salecah;

tout le royaume d’Og en Basan, qui régnait à Astaroth et à Edraï : c’était le dernier reste des Rephaïm. Moïse battit ces rois et les chassa.

all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (the same was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); for these did Moses smite, and drove them out.

Mais les enfants d’Israël ne chassèrent point les Gessuriens et les Machatiens, et Gessur et Machat habitent au milieu d’Israël jusqu’à ce jour.

Nevertheless the children of Israel drove not out the Geshurites, nor the Maacathites: but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel unto this day.

La tribu de Lévi fut la seule à laquelle Moïse ne donna pas d’héritage ; les sacrifices faits par le feu devant Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, sont son héritage, comme il le lui avait dit.

Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance; the offerings of Jehovah, the God of Israel, made by fire are his inheritance, as he spake unto him.

Moïse avait donné à la tribu des fils de Ruben une part selon leurs familles.

And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their families.

Ils eurent pour territoire, à partir d’Aroër sur le bord du torrent de l’Arnon, et de la ville située au milieu de la vallée, toute la plaine près de Médaba,

And their border was from Aroer, that is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain by Medeba;

Hésebon et toutes ses villes dans la plaine, Dibon, Bamoth-Baal, Beth-Baal-Maon,

Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon,

Jassa, Cédimoth, Méphaath,

and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath,

Cariathaïm, Sabama, Sarath-Asar dans la montagne de la vallée,

and Kiriathaim, and Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar in the mount of the valley,

Beth-Phogor, les pentes du Phasga, Beth-Jésimoth,

and Beth-peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth,

and all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, that dwelt in the land.

Le devin Balaam, fils de Béor, fut aussi du nombre de ceux que les enfants d’Israël firent périr par l’épée.

Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among the rest of their slain.

Ainsi le territoire des fils de Ruben atteignait jusqu’au Jourdain et à son territoire. Tel fut l’héritage — les villes et leurs villages — des fils de Ruben, et leurs familles.

And the border of the children of Reuben was the Jordan, and the border [thereof]. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

Moïse donna à la tribu de Gad, aux fils de Gad, une part selon leurs familles.

And Moses gave unto the tribe of Gad, unto the children of Gad, according to their families.

Ils eurent pour territoire : Jaser, toutes les villes de Galaad, la moitié du pays des enfants d’Ammon, jusqu’à Aroër, qui est vis-à-vis de Rabba,

And their border was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;

depuis Hésebon jusqu’à Raboth-Masphé et Bétonim, et depuis Manaïm jusqu’à la frontière de Dabir ;

and from Heshbon unto Ramath-mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir;

et, dans la vallée, Beth-Haram, Beth-Nemra, Socoth et Saphon, reste du royaume de Séhon, roi d’Hésebon ; le Jourdain et son territoire, jusqu’à l’extrémité de la mer de Cénéreth, de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à l’orient.

and in the valley, Beth-haram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan and the border [thereof], unto the uttermost part of the sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan eastward.

Tel fut l’héritage — les villes et leurs villages — des fils de Gad, selon leurs familles.

This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

Moïse donna à la demi-tribu de Manassé, aux fils de Manassé, une part selon leurs familles.

And Moses gave [inheritance] unto the half-tribe of Manasseh: and it was for the half-tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families.

Ils eurent pour territoire, à partir de Manaïm, tout Basan, tout le royaume d’Og, roi de Basan, et tous les bourgs de Jaïr en Basan, soixante villes.

And their border was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:

La moitié de Galaad, Astaroth et Édraï, villes du royaume d’Og en Basan, furent données aux fils de Machir, fils de Manassé, à la moitié des fils de Machir, selon leurs familles.

and half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even for the half of the children of Machir according to their families.

Telles sont les parts que distribua Moïse, lorsqu’il était dans les plaines de Moab, de l’autre côté du Jourdain, en face de Jéricho, à l’orient.

These are the inheritances which Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho, eastward.

Mais Moïse ne donna pas d’héritage à la tribu de Lévi ; Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, est son héritage, comme il le lui a dit.

But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance: Jehovah, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he spake unto them.

Chapitre 14

Voici ce que les enfants d’Israël reçurent en héritage dans le pays de Chanaan, ce que leur partagèrent le prêtre Éléazar, Josué, fils de Nun, et les chefs de famille des tribus des enfants d’Israël.

And these are the inheritances which the children of Israel took in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers` [houses] of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed unto them,

C’est le sort qui leur assigna leur héritage, comme Yahweh l’avait ordonné par Moïse, pour les neuf tribus et la demi-tribu.

by the lot of their inheritance, as Jehovah commanded by Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half-tribe.

Car Moïse avait donné l’héritage des deux tribus et de la demi-tribu de l’autre côté du Jourdain ; mais il n’avait pas donné aux Lévites d’héritage parmi eux.

For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.

Car les fils de Joseph formaient deux tribus, Manassé et Éphraïm ; et l’on ne donna pas aux Lévites de part dans le pays, si ce n’est des villes pour habitation et leurs banlieues pour leurs troupeaux et pour leurs biens.

For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: and they gave no portion unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for their cattle and for their substance.

Les enfants d’Israël accomplirent l’ordre que Yahweh avait donné à Moïse, et ils partagèrent le pays. Part des Calébites (Chap, xiv, 6-15). — Caleb rappelle la promesse de Moïse à Cadès (xiv, 6-9) et réclame la montagne d’Hébron (xiv, 10-12) ; Josué la lui concède (xiv, 13-15).

As Jehovah commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did; and they divided the land.

Les fils de Juda s’approchèrent de Josué, à Galgala, et Caleb, fils de Jéphoné, le Cénézéen, lui dit : « Tu sais ce que Yahweh a dit à Moïse, homme de Dieu, à mon sujet et à ton sujet, à Cadès-Barné.

Then the children of Judah drew nigh unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that Jehovah spake unto Moses the man of God concerning me and concerning thee in Kadesh-barnea.

J’étais âgé de quarante ans lorsque Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, m’envoya de Cadès-Barné pour explorer le pays, et je lui fis un rapport dans la sincérité de mon cœur.

Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of Jehovah sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in my heart.

Tandis que mes frères, qui étaient montés avec moi, découragèrent le peuple, moi, je suivis entièrement Yahweh, mon Dieu.

Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed Jehovah my God.

Et ce jour-là Moïse fit ce serment : Le pays que ton pied a foulé sera ton héritage et celui de tes enfants à perpétuité, parce que tu as entièrement suivi Yahweh, mon Dieu.

And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy foot hath trodden shall be an inheritance to thee and to thy children for ever, because thou hast wholly followed Jehovah my God.

Et maintenant, voici que Yahweh m’a conservé en vie, comme il l’a dit, pendant les quarante-cinq ans écoulés depuis que Yahweh adressa cette parole à Moïse, tandis qu’Israël marchait dans le désert ; et maintenant, voici que je suis âgé aujourd’hui de quatre-vingt-cinq ans.

And now, behold, Jehovah hath kept me alive, as he spake, these forty and five years, from the time that Jehovah spake this word unto Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

Je suis encore aujourd’hui aussi robuste qu’au jour où Moïse m’envoya ; ma force de maintenant est la même que celle d’alors, soit pour combattre, soit pour sortir et pour entrer.

As yet I am as strong this day as I as in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, and to go out and to come in.

Donne-moi donc cette montagne, dont Yahweh a parlé en ce jour-là ; car tu as toi-même entendu ce jour-là que là se trouvent des Enacim et des villes grandes et fortifiées ; peut-être Yahweh sera-t-il avec moi, et réussirai-je à les chasser, selon qu’a parlé Yahweh. »

Now therefore give me this hill-country, whereof Jehovah spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakim were there, and cities great and fortified: it may be that Jehovah will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as Jehovah spake.

Josué bénit Caleb, fils de Jéphoné, et il lui donna Hébron en héritage.

And Joshua blessed him; and he gave Hebron unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.

C’est pourquoi Hébron appartient en héritage à Caleb, fils de Jéphoné, le Cénézéen, jusqu’à ce jour, parce qu’il avait entièrement suivi Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël.

Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite unto this day; because that he wholly followed Jehovah, the God of Israel.

Hébron s’appelait autrefois Cariath-Arbé ; Arbé était l’homme le plus grand parmi les Enacim. Et le pays se reposa de la guerre.

Now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba; [which Arba was] the greatest man among the Anakim. And the land had rest from war.

Chapitre 15

La part échue par le sort à la tribu des enfants de Juda, selon leurs familles, s’étendait vers la frontière d’Edom, jusqu’au désert de Sin vers le midi, à l’extrémité méridionale de Chanaan.

And the lot for the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families was unto the border of Edom, even to the wilderness of Zin southward, at the uttermost part of the south.

Leur frontière du midi partait de l’extrémité de la mer Salée, de la langue tournée vers le sud ;

And their south border was from the uttermost part of the Salt Sea, from the bay that looketh southward;

elle se prolongeait au midi de la montée d’Akrabbim, passait à Sin et montait au midi de Cadès-Barné ; de là, elle passait à Esron, montait vers Addar et tournait à Carcaa ;

and it went out southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and went up by the south of Kadesh-barnea, and passed along by Hezron, and went up to Addar, and turned about to Karka;

elle passait ensuite à Asmon et continuait jusqu’au torrent d’Égypte ; et la frontière aboutissait à la mer. « Ce sera votre frontière au midi. »

and it passed along to Azmon, and went out at the brook of Egypt; and the goings out of the border were at the sea: this shall be your south border.

La frontière orientale fut la mer Salée jusqu’à l’embouchure du Jourdain. La frontière septentrionale partait de la langue de la mer Salée qui est à l’embouchure du Jourdain.

And the east border was the Salt Sea, even unto the end of the Jordan. And the border of the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the end of the Jordan;

La frontière montait vers Beth-Agla, passait au nord de Beth-Araba, et la frontière montait jusqu’à la pierre de Boën, fils de Ruben ;

and the border went up to Beth-hoglah, and passed along by the north of Beth-arabah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben;

et la frontière montait à Débéra à partir de la vallée d’Achor, et tournait vers le nord du côté de Galgala, qui est vis-à-vis de la montagne d’Adommim, au sud du torrent. Et la frontière passait près des eaux d’En-Sémès et aboutissait à En-Rogel.

and the border went up to Debir from the valley of Achor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is over against the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the river; and the border passed along to the waters of En-shemesh, and the goings out thereof were at En-rogel;

Et la frontière montait par la vallée de Ben-Ennom, jusqu’au versant méridional de la montagne des Jébuséens, qui est Jérusalem ; et la frontière s’élevait ensuite jusqu’au sommet de la montagne qui est vis-à-vis de la vallée d’Ennom à l’occident, et à l’extrémité de la plaine des Rephaïm au nord.

and the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the side of the Jebusite southward (the same is Jerusalem); and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the uttermost part of the vale of Rephaim northward;

Du sommet de la montagne, la frontière s’étendait jusqu’à la source des eaux de Nephtoa, aboutissait vers les villes de la montagne d’Ephron ; et la frontière s’étendait vers Baala, qui est Cariath-Jéarim.

and the border extended from the top of the mountain unto the fountain of the waters of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of mount Ephron; and the border extended to Baalah (the same is Kiriath-jearim);

De Baala, la frontière tournait à l’occident vers le mont Séïr, passait par le versant septentrional du mont Jarim, qui est Cheslon, descendait à Bethsamès et passait par Thamma.

and the border turned about from Baalah westward unto mount Seir, and passed along unto the side of mount Jearim on the north (the same is Chesalon), and went down to Beth-shemesh, and passed along by Timnah;

La frontière aboutissait au versant septentrional d’Accaron ; et la frontière s’étendait vers Sécrona, passait par le mont Baala, et aboutissait à Jebnéel ; et la frontière aboutissait à la mer.

and the border went out unto the side of Ekron northward; and the border extended to Shikkeron, and passed along to mount Baalah, and went out at Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the sea.

La limite occidentale était la Grande mer et son territoire. Telles furent de tous côtés les frontières des fils de Juda, selon leurs familles.

And the west border was to the great sea, and the border [thereof]. This is the border of the children of Judah round about according to their families.

On avait donné à Caleb, fils de Jéphoné, une part au milieu des fils de Juda, comme Yahweh l’avait ordonné à Josué, savoir la ville d’Arbé, père d’Enac : c’est Hébron,

And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a portion among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of Jehovah to Joshua, even Kiriath-arba, [which Arba was] the father of Anak (the same is Hebron).

Caleb en chassa les trois fils d’Enac, Sésaï, Ahiman et Tholmaï, descendants d’Enac.

And Caleb drove out thence the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.

De là il monta contre les habitants de Dabir, qui s’appelait autrefois Cariath-Sépher.

And he went up thence against the inhabitants of Debir: now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.

Caleb dit : « À celui qui battra Cariath-Sépher et qui la prendra, je donnerai pour femme ma fille Axa. »

And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

Othoniel, fils de Cénez, frère de Caleb, s’en empara, et Caleb lui donna sa fille Axa pour femme.

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

Lorsqu’elle alla chez Othoniel, elle l’excita à demander à son père un champ. Elle descendit de dessus son âne, et Caleb lui dit : « Qu’as-tu ? »

And it came to pass, when she came [unto him], that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said, What wouldest thou?

Elle répondit : « Fais-moi un présent, car tu m’as établie dans le pays sec ; donne-moi aussi des sources d’eau. » Et il lui donna les sources supérieures et les sources inférieures.

And she said, Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

And as for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.

Chapitre 16

La part échue par le sort aux fils de Joseph commençait, du côté de l’orient, depuis le Jourdain de Jéricho, jusqu’aux eaux de Jéricho ; c’était ensuite le désert qui monte de Jéricho à Béthel par la montagne.

And the lot came out for the children of Joseph from the Jordan at Jericho, at the waters of Jericho on the east, even the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill-country to Beth-el;

and it went down westward to the border of the Japhletites, unto the border of Beth-horon the nether, even unto Gezer; and the goings out thereof were at the sea.

Tel est l’héritage que reçurent les fils de Joseph, Manassé et Ephraïm.

And the children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their inheritance.

Voici la frontière des fils d’Ephraïm, selon leurs familles. La limite de leur héritage était, à l’orient, Ataroth-Addar jusqu’à Béthoron le Haut.

And the border of the children of Ephraim according to their families was [thus]: the border of their inheritance eastward was Ataroth-addar, unto Beth-horon the upper;

La frontière aboutissait, du côté de l’occident, vers Machméthath, au nord ; et la frontière tournait à l’orient, vers Thanath-Sélo et passait devant elle, vers l’orient de Janoé.

and the border went out westward at Michmethath on the north; and the border turned about eastward unto Taanath-shiloh, and passed along it on the east of Janoah;

De Janoé, elle descendait à Ataroth et à Naaratha, touchait à Jéricho et aboutissait au Jourdain.

and it went down from Janoah to Ataroth, and to Naarah, and reached unto Jericho, and went out at the Jordan.

De Taphuah, elle allait, du côté de l’occident, au torrent de Cana, pour aboutir à la mer. Tel fut l’héritage des fils d’Éphraïm selon leurs familles.

From Tappuah the border went along westward to the brook of Kanah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim according to their families;

Les fils d’Éphraïm eurent aussi des villes séparées au milieu de l’héritage des fils de Manassé, toutes avec leurs villages.

together with the cities which were set apart for the children of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.

Ils ne chassèrent pas les Chananéens qui habitaient à Gazer, et les Chananéens ont habité jusqu’à ce jour au milieu d’Éphraïm, mais assujettis à la corvée.

And they drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer: but the Canaanites dwell in the midst of Ephraim unto this day, and are become servants to do taskwork.

Chapitre 17

Il y eut encore une part échue par le sort pour la tribu de Manassé, car il était le premier-né de Joseph. Machir, premier-né de Manassé et père de Galaad, avait reçu Galaad et Basan, car il était homme de guerre.

And [this] was the lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the first-born of Joseph. As for Machir the first-born of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.

Un lot fut aussi assigné aux autres fils de Manassé, selon leurs familles, aux fils d’Abiézer, aux fils de Hélec, aux fils d’Esriel, aux fils de Séchem, aux fils de Hépher et aux fils de Sémida ; ce sont là les enfants mâles de Manassé, fils de Joseph, selon leurs familles.

So [the lot] was for the rest of the children of Manasseh according to their families: for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families.

Salphaad, fils de Hépher, fils de Galaad, fils de Machir, fils de Manassé, n’eut pas de fils, mais il eut des filles, et voici les noms de ses filles : Maala, Noa, Hégla, Melcha et Thersa.

But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

Elles se présentèrent devant Éléazar, le prêtre, devant Josué, fils de Nun, et devant les princes, en disant : « Yahweh a commandé à Moïse de nous donner un héritage parmi nos frères. » Et on leur donna, selon l’ordre de Yahweh, un héritage au milieu des frères de leur père.

And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, Jehovah commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren: therefore according to the commandment of Jehovah he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.

Il échut dix portions à Manassé, outre le pays de Galaad et de Basan, qui est de l’autre côté du Jourdain.

And there fell ten parts to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan;

Car les filles de Manassé reçurent un héritage au milieu de ses fils : le pays de Galaad fut pour les autres fils de Manassé.

because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons. And the land of Gilead belonged unto the rest of the sons of Manasseh.

La limite de Manassé partait d’Aser vers Machméthath, qui est en face de Sichem, et la frontière allait à droite, vers les habitants d’En-Taphua.

And the border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, which is before Shechem; and the border went along to the right hand, unto the inhabitants of En-tappuah.

Le territoire de Taphua échut à Manassé, mais Taphua sur la frontière de Manassé, était aux fils d’Éphraïm.

The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh; but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim.

La limite descendait au torrent de Cana, au midi du torrent ; les villes de cette région, échues à Éphraïm, étaient au milieu des villes de Manassé ; et la limite de Manassé était au nord du torrent et aboutissait à la mer.

And the border went down unto the brook of Kanah, southward of the brook: these cities belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh: and the border of Manasseh was on the north side of the brook, and the goings out thereof were at the sea:

Ainsi le pays au midi était à Éphraïm, et le pays au nord à Manassé, et la mer formait sa frontière. Vers le nord, ils touchaient à Aser, vers l’orient à Issachar.

southward it was Ephraim`s, and northward it was Manasseh`s, and the sea was his border; and they reached to Asher on the north, and to Issachar on the east.

Manassé obtint dans les territoires d’Issachar et d’Aser Bethsan et les villes de sa dépendance, Jéblaam et les villes de sa dépendance, les habitants de Dor et les villes de sa dépendance, les habitants d’Endor et les villes de sa dépendance, les habitants de Thénac et les villes de sa dépendance, les habitants de Mageddo et les villes de sa dépendance : c’est le district des trois Collines.

And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of En-dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, even the three heights.

Les fils de Manassé ne purent pas prendre possession de ces villes, et les Chananéens s’enhardirent à rester dans ce pays.

Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out [the inhabitants of] those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

Lorsque les enfants d’Israël furent plus forts, ils soumirent les Chananéens à un tribut, mais ils ne les chassèrent pas.

And it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxed strong, that they put the Canaanites to taskwork, and did not utterly drive them out.

Les fils de Joseph parlèrent à Josué, en disant : « Pourquoi ne m’as-tu donné en héritage qu’un seul lot, une seule part alors que je suis un peuple nombreux et que Yahweh a béni jusqu’à présent ? »

And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one part for an inheritance, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as hitherto Jehovah hath blessed me?

Josué leur dit : « Si tu es un peuple nombreux, monte à la forêt, et là défriche-toi une place dans le pays des Phérézéens et des Rephaïm, puisque la montagne d’Éphraïm est trop étroite pour toi. »

And Joshua said unto them, If thou be a great people, get thee up to the forest, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim; since the hill-country of Ephraim is too narrow for thee.

Les fils de Joseph dirent : « La montagne ne nous suffit pas, et il y a des chariots de fer chez tous les Chananéens qui habitent le pays plat, chez ceux qui sont à Bethsan et dans les villes de sa dépendance, et chez ceux qui sont dans la vallée de Jezraël. »

And the children of Joseph said, The hill-country is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are in Beth-shean and its towns, and they who are in the valley of Jezreel.

Josué répondit à la maison de Joseph, Éphraïm et Manassé : « Tu es un peuple nombreux, et ta force est grande ; tu n’auras pas seulement un lot.

And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power; thou shalt not have one lot only:

Car la montagne t’appartiendra ; c’est une forêt, tu la défricheras, et les issues en seront à toi ; car tu chasseras les Chananéens, quoiqu’ils aient des chars de fer et qu’ils soient forts. »

but the hill-country shall be thine; for though it is a forest, thou shalt cut it down, and the goings out thereof shall be thine; for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong.

Chapitre 18

Toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël se réunit à Silo, et ils y dressèrent la tente de réunion ; le pays était soumis devant eux.

And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled themselves together at Shiloh, and set up the tent of meeting there: and the land was subdued before them.

Il restait sept tribus d’entre les enfants d’Israël qui n’avaient pas encore reçu leur héritage.

And there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes, which had not yet divided their inheritance.

Josué dit aux enfants d’Israël : « Jusques à quand négligerez-vous de prendre possession du pays que Yahweh, le Dieu de vos pères, vous a donné ?

And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, How long are ye slack to go in to possess the land, which Jehovah, the God of your fathers, hath given you?

Choisissez trois hommes par tribu, et je les enverrai ; ils se lèveront, parcourront le pays, le décriront en vue du partage et reviendront vers moi.

Appoint for you three men of each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall arise, and walk through the land, and describe it according to their inheritance; and they shall come unto me.

Ils le diviseront en sept portions ; Juda restera dans ses frontières au midi, et la maison de Joseph restera dans ses frontières au nord.

And they shall divide it into seven portions: Judah shall abide in his border on the south, and the house of Joseph shall abide in their border on the north.

Vous donc, vous dresserez l’état du pays, en en faisant sept parts, et vous me l’apporterez ici ; puis je jetterai pour vous le sort ici devant Yahweh, notre Dieu.

And ye shall describe the land into seven portions, and bring [the description] hither to me; and I will cast lots for you here before Jehovah our God.

Car il n’y aura point de part pour les Lévites au milieu de vous, le sacerdoce de Yahweh étant leur héritage ; et Gad, Ruben, et la demi-tribu de Manassé ont reçu de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à l’orient, leur héritage, que leur a donné Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh. »

For the Levites have no portion among you; for the priesthood of Jehovah is their inheritance: and Gad and Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan eastward, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave them.

Ces hommes s’étant levés se mirent en route, et Josué leur donna ses ordres à leur départ pour dresser l’état du pays, en disant : « Allez, parcourez le pays, décrivez-le et revenez auprès de moi ; alors je jetterai pour vous le sort ici, devant Yahweh, à Silo. »

And the men arose, and went: and Joshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come again to me; and I will cast lots for you here before Jehovah in Shiloh.

Ces hommes partirent et, parcourant le pays, ils le décrivirent dans un livre selon les villes, en le partageant en sept portions ; et ils revinrent auprès de Josué, dans le camp, à Silo.

And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven portions in a book; and they came to Joshua unto the camp at Shiloh.

Josué jeta pour eux le sort à Silo, en présence de Yahweh, et là Josué partagea le pays aux enfants d’Israël, selon leurs portions. Territoire de Benjamin (Chap. xviii, 11-28). — Frontières : au nord (xviii, 11-13), à l’ouest (xviii, 14), au midi (xviii, 15-19), à l’est (xviii, 20). Les villes de Benjamin (xviii, 21-28).

And Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before Jehovah: and there Joshua divided the land unto the children of Israel according to their divisions.

Le sort tomba sur la tribu des fils de Benjamin, selon ses familles, et le territoire qui leur échut par le sort, était entre les fils de Juda et les fils de Joseph.

And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families: and the border of their lot went out between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.

Du côté du nord, leur frontière partait du Jourdain ; et la frontière montait au nord sur le versant de Jéricho, puis montait dans la montagne à l’occident, et aboutissait au désert de Bethaven.

And their border on the north quarter was from the Jordan; and the border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the hill-country westward; and the goings out thereof were at the wilderness of Beth-aven.

De là, la frontière passait à Luz, sur le versant de Luz, au midi, c’est Béthel ; puis la frontière descendait à Ataroth-Addar, par la montagne qui est au midi de Béthoron le Bas.

And the border passed along from thence to Luz, to the side of Luz (the same is Beth-el), southward; and the border went down to Ataroth-addar, by the mountain that lieth on the south of Beth-horon the nether.

Et la frontière s’étendait et tournait, du côté de l’occident, vers le midi, depuis la montagne située en face de Béthoron au sud, et aboutissait à Cariath-Baal, qui est Cariath-Jéarim, ville des fils de Juda : voilà pour le côté de l’occident.

And the border extended [thence], and turned about on the west quarter southward, from the mountain that lieth before Beth-horon southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kiriath-baal (the same is Kiriath-jearim), a city of the children of Judah: this was the west quarter.

Pour le côté du midi, la frontière partait de l’extrémité de Cariath-Jéarim, et aboutissait à l’occident, elle aboutissait à la source des eaux de Nephtoa.

And the south quarter was from the uttermost part of Kiriath-jearim; and the border went out westward, and went out to the fountain of the waters of Nephtoah;

Et la frontière descendait à l’extrémité de la montagne qui fait face à la vallée du fils d’Ennom, située dans la plaine des Rephaïm, au nord ; puis elle descendait, par la vallée d’Ennom, vers le versant méridional des Jébuséens, elle descendait à la source de Rogel.

and the border went down to the uttermost part of the mountain that lieth before the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is in the vale of Rephaim northward; and it went down to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of the Jebusite southward, and went down to En-rogel;

and it extended northward, and went out at En-shemesh, and went out to Geliloth, which is over against the ascent of Adummim; and it went down to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben;

Elle passait par le versant septentrional de la montagne en face de l’Arabah, et descendait à l’Arabah.

and it passed along to the side over against the Arabah northward, and went down unto the Arabah;

La frontière passait par le versant septentrional de Beth-Hagla, et la frontière aboutissait à la langue septentrionale de la mer Salée, vers l’embouchure du Jourdain, au midi : c’était la frontière du sud.

and the border passed along to the side of Beth-hoglah northward; and the goings out of the border were at the north bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan: this was the south border.

Le Jourdain formait sa limite du côté de l’orient. Tel fut l’héritage des fils de Benjamin, d’après ses frontières tout autour, selon leurs familles.

And the Jordan was the border of it on the east quarter. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, by the borders thereof round about, according to their families.

Les villes de la tribu des fils de Benjamin, selon leurs familles, étaient : Jéricho, Beth-Hagla, Emek-Casis,

Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin according to their families were Jericho, and Beth-hoglah, and Emek-keziz,

and Beth-arabah, and Zemaraim, and Beth-el,

Avim, Aphara, Ophéra,

and Avvim, and Parah, and Ophrah,

Képhar-Emona, Ophni et Gabée : douze villes et leurs villages.

and Chephar-ammoni, and Ophni, and Geba; twelve cities with their villages:

Gabaon, Rama, Béroth,

Gibeon, and Ramah, and Beeroth,

Mesphé, Caphara, Amosa,

and Mizpeh, and Chephirah, and Mozah,

Récem, Jaréphel, Tharéla,

and Rekem, and Irpeel, and Taralah,

Séla, Eleph, Jébus, qui est Jérusalem, Gabaath, et Cariath : quatorze villes et leurs villages. Tel fut l’héritage des fils de Benjamin, selon leurs familles.

Chapitre 19

La seconde part échut par le sort à Siméon, à la tribu des fils de Siméon, selon leurs familles : leur héritage fut au milieu de l’héritage des fils de Juda.

And the second lot came out for Simeon, even for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Judah.

Ils eurent dans leur héritage : Bersabée, Sabée, Molada,

And they had for their inheritance Beer-sheba, or Sheba, and Moladah,

Haser-Sual, Bala, Asem,

and Hazar-shual, and Balah, and Ezem,

Eltholad, Béthul, Harma,

and Eltolad, and Bethul, and Hormah,

Siceleg, Beth-Marchaboth, Hasersusa,

and Ziklag, and Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-susah,

Beth-lebaoth et Sarohen : treize villes et leurs villages.

and Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities with their villages:

Aïn, Remmon, Athar et Asan, quatre villes et leurs villages ;

Ain, Rimmon, and Ether, and Ashan; four cities with their villages:

ainsi que tous les villages aux environs de ces villes, jusqu’à Baalath-Béer, qui est la Ramath du midi. — Tel fut l’héritage de la tribu des fils de Siméon selon leurs familles.

and all the villages that were round about these cities to Baalath-beer, Ramah of the South. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families.

L’héritage des fils de Siméon fut pris sur la portion des fils de Juda ; car la portion des fils de Juda était trop grande pour eux, et c’est au milieu de leur territoire que les fils de Siméon reçurent leur héritage. Territoire de Zabulon (Chap. xix, 10-16).

Out of the part of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon; for the portion of the children of Judah was too much for them: therefore the children of Simeon had inheritance in the midst of their inheritance.

La troisième part échut par le sort aux fils de Zabulon selon leurs familles ; la frontière de leur héritage s’étendait jusqu’à Sarid.

And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families; and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid;

Leur frontière montait vers l’occident, vers Mérala, touchait à Debbaseth, touchait au torrent qui coule devant Jéconam.

and their border went up westward, even to Maralah, and reached to Dabbesheth; and it reached to the brook that is before Jokneam;

De Sarid, elle revenait à l’orient, vers le soleil levant, jusqu’à la frontière de Céseleth-Thabor, aboutissait vers Dabereth et montait à Japhiré.

and it turned from Sarid eastward toward the sunrising unto the border of Chisloth-tabor; and it went out to Daberath, and went up to Japhia;

De là, elle passait, vers l’orient, vers le soleil levant à Geth-Hépher, à Thacasin, et aboutissait à Remmon, qui confine à Noa.

and from thence it passed along eastward to Gath-hepher, to Eth-kazin; and it went out at Rimmon which stretcheth unto Neah;

La frontière tournait du côté du nord vers Hanathon, et aboutissait à la vallée de Jephtahel.

and the border turned about it on the north to Hannathon; and the goings out thereof were at the valley of Iphtah-el;

Les villes étaient : Catheth, Naalol, Séméron, Jedala et Bethléhem : douze villes et leurs villages. —

and Kattath, and Nahalal, and Shimron, and Idalah, and Bethlehem: twelve cities with their villages.

Tel fut l’héritage des fils de Zabulon, selon leurs familles : ces villes et leurs villages. Territoire d’Issachar (Chap. xix, 17-23).

This is the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.

La quatrième part échut par le sort à Issachar, aux fils d’Issachar, selon leurs familles.

The fourth lot came out for Issachar, even for the children of Issachar according to their families.

Leur frontière était Jezraël, Casaloth, Sunem,

And their border was unto Jezreel, and Chesulloth, and Shunem,

Hapharaïm, Séon, Anaharath,

and Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath,

Rabboth, Césion, Abès,

and Rabbith, and Kishion, and Ebez,

Ramèth, En-Gannim, En-Hadda et Beth-Phésès.

and Remeth, and Engannim, and En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez,

La frontière touchait à Thabor, à Séhésima et à Beth-Samès, et aboutissait au Jourdain : seize villes et leurs villages. —

and the border reached to Tabor, and Shahazumah, and Beth-shemesh; and the goings out of their border were at the Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages.

Tel fut l’héritage de la tribu des fils d’Issachar, selon leurs familles : les villes et leurs villages. Territoire d’Aser (Chap. xix, 24-31).

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities with their villages.

La cinquième part échut par le sort à la tribu des fils d’Aser, selon leurs familles.

And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families.

Leur frontière était Halcath, Chali, Béten, Axaph,

And their border was Helkath, and Hali, and Beten, and Achshaph,

Elmélech, Amaad et Messal ; elle touchait, vers l’occident, au Carmel et à Sihor-Labanath ;

and Allammelech, and Amad, and Mishal; and it reached to Carmel westward, and to Shihor-libnath;

puis elle tournait vers Beth-Dagon, touchait Zabulon et la vallée de Jephtahel, au nord de Beth-Emec et de Néhiel, et aboutissait à Caboul, à gauche,

and it turned toward the sunrising to Beth-dagon, and reached to Zebulun, and to the valley of Iphtah-el northward to Beth-emek and Neiel; and it went out to Cabul on the left hand,

et à Abran, Rohob, Hamon, et Cana, jusqu’à Sidon la Grande ;

and Ebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, even unto great Sidon;

la frontière tournait ensuite vers Ramath jusqu’à la ville forte de Tyr et la frontière tournait vers Hosa, pour aboutir à la mer, près du district d’Achziba ;

and the border turned to Ramah, and to the fortified city of Tyre; and the border turned to Hosah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea by the region of Achzib;

de plus : Amma, Aphec et Rohob : vingt-deux villes et leurs villages. —

Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty and two cities with their villages.

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.

La sixième part échut par le sort aux fils de Nephthali, selon leurs familles.

The sixth lot came out for the children of Naphtali, even for the children of Naphtali according to their families.

Leur frontière allait depuis Héleph, à partir du chêne qui est à Saananim, vers Adami-Néceb et Jebnaël, jusqu’à Lécum, et elle aboutissait au Jourdain ;

And their border was from Heleph, from the oak in Zaanannim, and Adaminekeb, and Jabneel, unto Lakkum; and the goings out thereof were at the Jordan;

la frontière tournait vers l’occident à Azanoth-Thabor, et de là aboutissait à Hucuca ; elle touchait à Zabulon au midi, à Aser à l’occident, et à Juda, près du Jourdain, vers le soleil levant.

and the border turned westward to Aznoth-tabor, and went out from thence to Hukkok; and it reached to Zebulun on the south, and reached to Asher on the west, and to Judah at the Jordan toward the sunrising.

and Kedesh, and Edrei, and En-hazor,

Jéron, Magdalel, Horem, Beth-Anath et Beth-Samès : dix-neuf villes et leurs villages. —

And Iron, and Migdal-el, Horem, and Beth-anath, and Beth-shemesh; nineteen cities with their villages.

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families, the cities with their villages.

The seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families.

La frontière de leur héritage comprenait Saraa, Esthaol, Hir-Sémès,

And the border of their inheritance was Zorah, and Eshtaol, and Ir-shemesh,

Sélébin, Ajalon, Jéthéla,

and Shaalabbin, and Aijalon, and Ithlah,

Élon, Themna, Acron,

and Elon, and Timnah, and Ekron,

Elthécé, Gebbéthon, Balaath,

and Eltekeh, and Gibbethon, and Baalath,

Jud, Bené-Barach, Geth-Remmon ;

and Jehud, and Bene-berak, and Gath-rimmon,

Mé-Jarcon et Arécon, avec le territoire vis-à-vis de Joppé.

and Me-jarkon, and Rakkon, with the border over against Joppa.

And the border of the children of Dan went out beyond them; for the children of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.

Tel fut l’héritage de la tribu des fils de Dan, selon leurs familles : les villes et leurs villages. Part de Josué (Chap. xix, 49, 50).

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.

Lorsqu’ils eurent achevé de faire le partage du pays, selon ses limites, les enfants d’Israël donnèrent à Josué, fils de Nun, un héritage au milieu d’eux.

So they made an end of distributing the land for inheritance by the borders thereof; and the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun in the midst of them:

Sur l’ordre de Yahweh, ils lui donnèrent la ville qu’il demanda, Thamnath-Saré, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm. Josué rebâtit cette ville et il y demeura. Conclusion (Chap. xix, 51).

according to the commandment of Jehovah they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath-serah in the hill-country of Ephraim; and he built the city, and dwelt therein.

Tels sont les héritages que le prêtre Éléazar, Josué, fils de Nun, et les chefs de famille des tribus des enfants d’Israël répartirent par le sort à Silo, devant Yahweh, à l’entrée de la tente de réunion. Ils achevèrent ainsi le partage du pays.

These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers` [houses] of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance by lot in Shiloh before Jehovah, at the door of the tent of meeting. So they made an end of dividing the land.

Chapitre 20

Yahweh parla à Josué, en disant : « Parle aux enfants d’Israël et dis-leur :

And Jehovah spake unto Joshua, saying,

Désignez-vous, comme je vous l’ai ordonné par Moïse, des villes de refuge

Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Assign you the cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by Moses,

où pourra s’enfuir le meurtrier qui aura tué quelqu’un par erreur, sans le savoir, et elles vous serviront de refuge contre le vengeur du sang.

that the manslayer that killeth any person unwittingly [and] unawares may flee thither: and they shall be unto you for a refuge from the avenger of blood.

Le meurtrier s’enfuira vers une de ces villes ; il s’arrêtera à l’entrée de la porte de la ville, et exposera son cas aux anciens de cette ville ; ceux-ci le recueilleront auprès d’eux dans la ville, et lui donneront une demeure pour qu’il habite avec eux.

And he shall flee unto one of those cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city; and they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.

Si le vengeur du sang le poursuit, ils ne livreront point le meurtrier entre ses mains, car c’est sans le savoir qu’il a tué son prochain, qu’il ne haïssait pas auparavant.

And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver up the manslayer into his hand; because he smote his neighbor unawares, and hated him not beforetime.

Le meurtrier restera dans cette ville jusqu’à ce qu’il comparaisse devant l’assemblée pour être jugé, jusqu’à la mort du grand prêtre qui sera en fonctions en ces jours-là. Alors le meurtrier s’en retournera et rentrera dans sa ville et dans sa maison, dans la ville d’où il s’était enfui. »

And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the manslayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

Ils consacrèrent Cédès en Gallilée, dans la montagne de Nephthali ; Sichem, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, et Cariath-Arbé, qui est Hébron, dans la montagne de Juda.

And they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (the same is Hebron) in the hill-country of Judah.

De l’autre côté du Jourdain, vis-à-vis de Jéricho, à l’orient, ils désignèrent Bosor, dans le désert, dans la plaine, ville de la tribu de Ruben ; Ramoth en Galaad, de la tribu de Gad, et Gaulon en Basan, de la tribu de Manassé.

And beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness in the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

Telles furent les villes assignées à tous les enfants d’Israël et à l’étranger qui séjourne au milieu d’eux, afin que quiconque aurait tué quelqu’un par erreur pût s’y réfugier, et qu’il ne mourût pas de la main du vengeur du sang, avant d’avoir comparu devant l’assemblée.

These were the appointed cities for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person unwittingly might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

Chapitre 21

Les chefs de famille des Lévites s’approchèrent du prêtre Éléazar, de Josué, fils de Nun, et des chefs de famille des tribus des enfants d’Israël ;

Then came near the heads of fathers` [houses] of the Levites unto Eleazar the priest, and unto Joshua the son of Nun, and unto the heads of fathers` [houses] of the tribes of the children of Israel;

ils leur parlèrent à Silo, dans le pays de Chanaan, en disant : « Yahweh a ordonné par Moïse qu’on nous donnât des villes pour notre habitation, et leurs banlieues pour notre bétail. »

and they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, Jehovah commanded Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.

Les enfants d’Israël donnèrent aux Lévites, sur leur héritage, selon l’ordre de Yahweh, les villes suivantes et leurs banlieues.

And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, according to the commandment of Jehovah, these cities with their suburbs.

Le sort fut tiré d’abord pour les familles des Caathites ; et les fils du prêtre Aaron, d’entre les Lévites, obtinrent par le sort treize villes de la tribu de Juda, de la tribu de Siméon et de la tribu de Benjamin ;

And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the children of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of Judah, and out of the tribe of the Simeonites, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.

les autres fils de Caath obtinrent par le sort dix villes des familles de la tribu d’Éphraïm, de la tribu de Dan et de la demi-tribu de Manassé.

And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.

Les fils de Gerson obtinrent par le sort treize villes des familles de la tribu d’Issachar, de la tribu d’Aser, de la tribu de Nephthali et de la demi-tribu de Manassé en Basan.

And the children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.

Les fils de Mérari, selon leurs familles, obtinrent douze villes de la tribu de Ruben, de la tribu de Gad et de la tribu de Zabulon.

The children of Merari according to their families had out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

Les enfants d’Israël donnèrent par le sort aux Lévites, ces villes et leurs banlieues, comme Yahweh l’avait ordonné par Moïse.

And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as Jehovah commanded by Moses.

Ils donnèrent de la tribu des fils de Juda et de la tribu des fils de Siméon les villes suivantes désignées par leurs noms ;

And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are [here] mentioned by name:

ce fut pour les fils d’Aaron, d’entre les familles des Caathites, d’entre les fils de Lévi, car le sort fut d’abord tiré pour eux.

and they were for the children of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi; for theirs was the first lot.

Ils leurs donnèrent, dans la montagne de Juda, la ville d’Arbé, père d’Enac, laquelle est Hébron, et sa banlieue tout autour.

And they gave them Kiriath-arba, [which Arba was] the father of Anak (the same is Hebron), in the hill-country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.

Mais la campagne de cette ville et ses villages, ils les donnèrent en possession à Caleb, fils de Jéphoné.

But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.

And unto the children of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Libnah with its suburbs,

Jéther et sa banlieue, Estémo et sa banlieue,

and Jattir with its suburbs, and Eshtemoa with its suburbs,

Holon et sa banlieue, Dabir et sa banlieue,

and Holon with its suburbs, and Debir with its suburbs,

Aïn et sa banlieue, Jéta et sa banlieue, Bethsamès et sa banlieue : neuf villes de ces deux tribus.

and Ain with its suburbs, and Juttah with its suburbs, [and] Beth-shemesh with its suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes.

And out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its suburbs, Geba with its suburbs,

Anathoth et sa banlieue, Almon et sa banlieue : quatre villes.

Anathoth with its suburbs, and Almon with its suburbs; four cities.

All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their suburbs.

Quant aux familles des fils de Caath, Lévites, aux autres fils de Caath, les villes qui leur échurent par le sort furent de la tribu d’Ephraïm.

And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites, even the rest of the children of Kohath, they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim.

Les enfants d’Israël leur donnèrent la ville de refuge pour le meurtrier, Sichem et sa banlieue, dans la montagne d’Ephraïm, ainsi que Gazer et sa banlieue,

And they gave them Shechem with its suburbs in the hill-country of Ephraim, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Gezer with its suburbs,

Cibsaïm et sa banlieue, Beth-Horon et sa banlieue : quatre villes.

and Kibzaim with its suburbs, and Beth-horon with its suburbs; four cities.

De la tribu de Dan : Elthéco et sa banlieue, Gabathon et sa banlieue,

And out of the tribe of Dan, Elteke with its suburbs, Gibbethon with its suburbs,

Ajalon et sa banlieue, Geth-Remmon et sa banlieue : quatre villes.

Aijalon with its suburbs, Gath-rimmon with its suburbs; four cities.

De la demi-tribu de Manassé : Thanach et sa banlieue, et Geth-Remmon et sa banlieue : deux villes.

And out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with its suburbs; two cities.

Total : dix villes avec leurs banlieues, pour les familles des autres fils de Caath.

All the cities of the families of the rest of the children of Kohath were ten with their suburbs.

Damna et sa banlieue, Naalol et sa banlieue : quatre villes.

Dimnah with its suburbs, Nahalal with its suburbs; four cities.

Et de la tribu de Ruben, Bosor et sa banlieue, Jassa et sa banlieue,

And out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with its suburbs, and Jahaz with its suburbs,

Cédémoth et sa banlieue, Méphaath et sa banlieue : quatre villes.

Kedemoth with its suburbs, and Mephaath with its suburbs; four cities.

And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Mahanaim with its suburbs,

Hésebon et sa banlieue, Jaser et sa banlieue : en tout quatre villes.

Heshbon with its suburbs, Jazer with its suburbs; four cities in all.

All [these were] the cities of the children of Merari according to their families, even the rest of the families of the Levites; and their lot was twelve cities.

All the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs.

Chacune de ces villes avait sa banlieue tout autour ; il en était ainsi pour toutes ces villes. 7. Chap. xxi, 41-43. — L’accomplissement des promesses divines.

These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus it was with all these cities.

C’est ainsi que Yahweh donna à Israël tout le pays qu’il avait juré de donner à leurs pères ; ils en prirent possession et s’y établirent.

So Jehovah gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.

Yahweh leur accorda du repos tout autour d’eux, comme il l’avait juré à leurs pères ; aucun de leurs ennemis ne put leur résister, et Yahweh les livra tous entre leurs mains.

And Jehovah gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; Jehovah delivered all their enemies into their hand.

De toutes les bonnes paroles que Yahweh avait dites à la maison d’Israël, aucune ne resta sans effet ; toutes s’accomplirent.

There failed not aught of any good thing which Jehovah had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.

Chapitre 22

Alors Josué appela les Rubénites, les Gadites et la demi-tribu de Manassé,

Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,

et il leur dit : « Vous avez observé tout ce que vous a prescrit Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, et vous avez obéi à ma voix en tout ce que je vous ai commandé.

and said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, and have hearkened unto my voice in all that I commanded you:

Vous n’avez pas abandonné vos frères durant ce long espace de temps, jusqu’à ce jour, et vous avez fidèlement observé le commandement de Yahweh, votre Dieu.

ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of Jehovah your God.

Maintenant que Yahweh, votre Dieu, a donné du repos à vos frères, comme il le leur avait dit, retournez et allez-vous en vers vos tentes, dans le pays qui vous appartient, et que Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, vous a donné de l’autre côté du Jourdain.

And now Jehovah your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he spake unto them: therefore now turn ye, and get you unto your tents, unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave you beyond the Jordan.

Seulement ayez grand soin de mettre en pratique les ordonnances et les lois que Moïse, serviteur de Yahweh, vous a prescrites, aimant Yahweh, votre Dieu, marchant dans toutes ses voies, gardant ses commandements, vous attachant à lui et le servant de tout votre cœur et toute votre âme. »

Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, to love Jehovah your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Et Josué les bénit et les congédia ; et il s’en allèrent vers leurs tentes.

So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went unto their tents.

Moïse avait donné à une moitié de la tribu de Manassé un territoire en Basan, et Josué donna à l’autre moitié un territoire parmi ses frères en deçà du Jourdain, à l’occident. En les renvoyant vers leurs tentes, Josué les bénit,

Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given [inheritance] in Bashan; but unto the other half gave Joshua among their brethren beyond the Jordan westward; moreover when Joshua sent them away unto their tents, he blessed them,

et il leur dit : « Vous retournerez à vos tentes avec de grandes richesses, des troupeaux très nombreux et beaucoup d’argent, d’or, d’airain, de fer et de vêtements ; partagez avec vos frères les dépouilles de vos ennemis. »

and spake unto them, saying, Return with much wealth unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.

Les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé, ayant quitté les enfants d’Israël à Silo, qui est dans le pays de Chanaan, s’en retournèrent pour aller dans le pays de Galaad, qui était la propriété qu’ils avaient reçue, comme Yahweh l’avait ordonné par Moïse.

And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the commandment of Jehovah by Moses.

Quand ils furent arrivés aux districts du Jourdain qui font partie du pays de Chanaan, les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé y bâtirent un autel au bord du Jourdain, un autel grand à voir.

And when they came unto the region about the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, a great altar to look upon.

Les enfants d’Israël apprirent que l’on disait : « Voilà que les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé ont bâti un autel sur le devant du pays de Chanaan, dans les districts du Jourdain, du côté des enfants d’Israël. »

And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that pertaineth to the children of Israel.

Quand les enfants d’Israël l’eurent appris, toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël se réunit à Silo, pour monter contre eux et leur faire la guerre.

And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.

Les enfants d’Israël envoyèrent auprès des fils de Ruben, des fils de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé, au pays de Galaad, Phinées, fils du prêtre Éléazar,

And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

et avec lui dix princes, un prince de maison patriarcale, pour chacune des tribus d’Israël : tous étaient chefs de leur maison patriarcale parmi les milliers d’Israël.

and with him ten princes, one prince of a fathers` house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were every one of them head of their fathers` houses among the thousands of Israel.

S’étant rendus auprès des fils de Ruben, des fils de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé, au pays de Galaad, ils leur parlèrent en disant :

And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,

« Ainsi parle toute l’assemblée de Yahweh : Quelle infidélité avez-vous commise envers le Dieu d’Israël, de vous détourner aujourd’hui de Yahweh en vous bâtissant un autel pour vous révolter aujourd’hui contre Yahweh ?

Thus saith the whole congregation of Jehovah, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following Jehovah, in that ye have builded you an altar, to rebel this day against Jehovah?

N’est-ce pas assez pour nous que le crime de Phogor, dont nous ne nous sommes pas encore purifiés jusqu’à ce jour, malgré la plaie qui frappa l’assemblée de Yahweh,

Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves unto this day, although there came a plague upon the congregation of Jehovah,

pour que vous vous détourniez aujourd’hui de Yahweh ? Si vous vous révoltez aujourd’hui contre Yahweh, demain il s’irritera contre toute l’assemblée d’Israël.

that ye must turn away this day from following Jehovah? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to-day against Jehovah, that to-morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.

Que si vous regardez comme impur le pays qui est en votre possession, passez dans le pays qui est la possession de Yahweh, où est fixée la demeure de Yahweh, et établissez-vous au milieu de nous ; mais ne vous révoltez pas contre Yahweh et ne vous révoltez pas contre nous, en vous bâtissant un autel outre l’autel de Yahweh, notre Dieu.

Howbeit, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of Jehovah, wherein Jehovah`s tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against Jehovah, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar besides the altar of Jehovah our God.

Achan, fils de Zaré, ne commit-il pas une infidélité au sujet des choses vouées par anathème, et la colère de Yahweh n’a-t-elle pas éclaté sur toute l’assemblée d’Israël ? Et il ne fut pas le seul qui périt à cause de son crime. »

Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.

Les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé répondirent et dirent aux chefs des milliers d’Israël :

Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spake unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,

« Le Tout-Puissant, Dieu, Yahweh, le Tout-Puissant, Dieu, Yahweh le sait, et Israël le saura ! Si c’est par rébellion et par infidélité envers Yahweh, ô Dieu, ne nous sauvez point en ce jour !…

The Mighty One, God, Jehovah, the Mighty One, God, Jehovah, he knoweth; and Israel he shall know: if it be in rebellion, or if in trespass against Jehovah (save thou us not this day,)

Que si nous nous sommes bâti un autel, pour nous détourner de Yahweh, et si c’est pour y offrir des holocaustes et des oblations, pour y faire des sacrifices pacifiques ; que Yahweh nous en demande compte !

that we have built us an altar to turn away from following Jehovah; or if to offer thereon burnt-offering or meal-offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace-offerings thereon, let Jehovah himself require it;

et si ce n’est pas par crainte de ce qui arriverait que nous avons fait cela, nous disant : Vos fils diront un jour à nos fils : Qu’y a-t-il de commun entre vous et Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël ?

and if we have not [rather] out of carefulness done this, [and] of purpose, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with Jehovah, the God of Israel?

Yahweh a mis le Jourdain comme limite entre nous et vous, fils de Ruben et fils de Gad ; vous n’avez point de part à Yahweh. — Ainsi vos fils seraient cause que nos fils cesseraient de craindre Yahweh. —

for Jehovah hath made the Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no portion in Jehovah: so might your children make our children cease from fearing Jehovah.

Et nous nous sommes dit : Mettons-nous à bâtir un autel, non pour des holocaustes et pour des sacrifices ;

Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice:

mais afin qu’il soit un témoin entre nous et vous, et nos descendants après nous, que nous servons Yahweh devant sa face par nos holocaustes, par nos sacrifices et nos victimes pacifiques, afin que vos fils ne disent pas un jour à nos fils : Vous n’avez point de part à Yahweh.

but it shall be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may do the service of Jehovah before him with our burnt-offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace-offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no portion in Jehovah.

Nous avons dit : Si un jour ils parlaient ainsi à nous ou à nos descendants, nous leur répondrions : Voyez la forme de l’autel de Yahweh que nos pères ont construit, non pour servir à des holocaustes et à des sacrifices, mais pour être un témoin entre nous et vous.

Therefore said we, It shall be, when they so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we shall say, Behold the pattern of the altar of Jehovah, which our fathers made, not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.

Loin de nous de vouloir nous révolter contre Yahweh et nous détourner aujourd’hui de Yahweh, en bâtissant un autel pour des holocaustes, pour des oblations et pour des sacrifices, outre l’autel de Yahweh, notre Dieu, qui est devant sa demeure ! »

Far be it from us that we should rebel against Jehovah, and turn away this day from following Jehovah, to build an altar for burnt-offering, for meal-offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of Jehovah our God that is before his tabernacle.

Lorsque le prêtre Phinées et les princes de l’assemblée, chefs des milliers d’Israël, qui étaient avec lui, eurent entendu les paroles que prononcèrent les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et les fils de Manassé, ils furent satisfaits.

And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them well.

Et Phinées, fils du prêtre Éléazar, dit aux fils de Ruben, aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Manassé : « Nous reconnaissons maintenant que Yahweh est au milieu de nous, puisque vous n’avez pas commis cette infidélité envers Yahweh ; vous avez ainsi délivré les enfants d’Israël de la main de Yahweh ! »

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we know that Jehovah is in the midst of us, because ye have not committed this trespass against Jehovah: now have ye delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of Jehovah.

Phinées, fils du prêtre Éléazar, et les princes quittèrent les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad, et revinrent du pays de Galaad dans le pays de Chanaan, vers les enfants d’Israël, auxquels ils firent leur rapport.

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

La chose plut aux enfants d’Israël ; ils bénirent Dieu et ne parlèrent plus de monter en armes contre eux, pour dévaster le pays qu’habitaient les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad.

And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spake no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and the children of Gad dwelt.

Les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad appelèrent l’autel Ed, car, dirent-ils, il est témoin entre nous que Yahweh est le vrai Dieu.

And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar [Ed]: For, [said they], it is a witness between us that Jehovah is God.

Chapitre 23

Un long temps s’était écoulé depuis que Yahweh avait donné du repos à Israël, en le délivrant de tous ses ennemis d’alentour, et Josué était vieux, avancé en âge.

And it came to pass after many days, when Jehovah had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, and Joshua was old and well stricken in years;

Alors Josué convoqua tout Israël, ses anciens, ses chefs, ses juges et ses officiers, et leur dit : « Je suis devenu vieux, avancé en âge.

that Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders and for their heads, and for their judges and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and well stricken in years:

Vous avez vu tout ce que Yahweh, votre Dieu a fait à toutes ces nations devant vous ; car c’est Yahweh, votre Dieu, qui a combattu pour vous.

and ye have seen all that Jehovah your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for Jehovah your God, he it is that hath fought for you.

Voyez : je vous ai distribué par le sort en héritage pour vos tribus, ces nations qui sont restées et toutes celles que j’ai exterminées, depuis le Jourdain jusqu’à la grande mer vers le soleil couchant.

Behold, I have allotted unto you these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun.

Yahweh, votre Dieu, les repoussera devant vous, et les chassera devant vous, et vous posséderez leur pays, comme Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous l’a dit.

And Jehovah your God, he will thrust them out from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as Jehovah your God spake unto you.

Montrez donc un grand courage pour observer et mettre en pratique tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi de Moïse, sans vous en détourner ni à droite ni à gauche,

Therefore be ye very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;

sans vous mêler avec ces nations qui sont restées parmi vous ; n’invoquez point le nom de leurs dieux, ne jurez point par eux, ne les servez point et ne vous prosternez point devant eux ;

that ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear [by them], neither serve them, nor bow down yourselves unto them;

mais attachez-vous à Yahweh, votre Dieu, comme vous l’avez fait jusqu’à ce jour.

but cleave unto Jehovah your God, as ye have done unto this day.

Yahweh a chassé devant vous des nations grandes et puissantes, et personne n’a pu tenir devant vous jusqu’à ce jour.

For Jehovah hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath stood before you unto this day.

Un seul d’entre vous en poursuivait mille, car Yahweh, votre Dieu, combattait pour vous, comme il vous l’a dit.

One man of you shall chase a thousand; for Jehovah your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he spake unto you.

Prenez donc garde à vous mêmes, pour que vous aimiez Yahweh, votre Dieu.

Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love Jehovah your God.

Car si vous vous détournez et que vous vous attachiez au reste de ces nations qui sont demeurées parmi vous, si vous contractez des mariages avec elles et que vous vous mêliez à elles et qu’elles se mêlent à vous,

Else if ye do at all go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you;

sachez bien que Yahweh, votre Dieu, ne continuera pas de chasser ces nations devant nous ; mais elles seront pour vous un filet et un piège, une verge sur vos flancs et des épines dans vos yeux, jusqu’à ce que vous ayez péri de dessus cette excellente terre que vous a donnée Yahweh, votre Dieu.

know for a certainty that Jehovah your God will no more drive these nations from out of your sight; but they shall be a snare and a trap unto you, and a scourge in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which Jehovah your God hath given you.

Voici que je m’en vais aujourd’hui par le chemin de toute la terre ; reconnaissez de tout votre cœur et de toute votre âme, que, de toutes les bonnes paroles que Yahweh, votre Dieu, a prononcées sur vous, aucune parole n’est restée sans effet ; toutes se sont accomplies pour vous, aucune parole n’en est tombée.

And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which Jehovah your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, not one thing hath failed thereof.

De même donc que toutes les bonnes paroles que Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous a adressées, se sont accomplies pour vous, de même aussi Yahweh accomplira sur vous toutes les paroles de menace, jusqu’à ce qu’il vous ait détruits de dessus cette excellente terre que Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous a donnée.

And it shall come to pass, that as all the good things are come upon you of which Jehovah your God spake unto you, so will Jehovah bring upon you all the evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which Jehovah your God hath given you.

Si vous transgressez l’alliance de Yahweh, votre Dieu, qu’il vous a prescrite, et si vous allez servir d’autres dieux, et vous prosterner devant eux, la colère de Yahweh s’enflammera contre vous, et vous périrez bientôt de dessus le bon pays qu’il vous a donné. »

When ye transgress the covenant of Jehovah your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow down yourselves to them; then will the anger of Jehovah be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.

Chapitre 24

Josué assembla toutes les tribus d’Israël à Sichem, et il convoqua les anciens d’Israël, ses chefs, ses juges et ses officiers. Ils se présentèrent devant Dieu,

And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

et Josué dit à tout le peuple : « Ainsi parle Yahweh, Dieu d’Israël : Vos pères, Tharé, père d’Abraham et père de Nachor, habitaient à l’origine de l’autre côté du fleuve, et ils servaient d’autres dieux.

And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor: and they served other gods.

Je pris votre père Abraham de l’autre côté du fleuve et je le conduisis dans tout le pays de Chanaan ; je multipliai sa postérité, et je lui donnai Isaac.

And I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.

À Isaac je donnai Jacob et Ésaü, et je donnai pour possession à Ésaü la montagne de Séïr ; et Jacob et ses fils descendirent en Égypte. —

And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it: and Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

Puis j’envoyai Moïse et Aaron, et je frappai l’Égypte comme je l’ai fait au milieu d’elle, et ensuite je vous en fis sortir.

And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did in the midst thereof: and afterward I brought you out.

Je fis sortir d’Égypte vos pères, et vous arrivâtes à la mer. Les Égyptiens poursuivirent vos pères, avec des chars et des cavaliers, jusqu’à la mer Rouge.

And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and with horsemen unto the Red Sea.

Ils crièrent à Yahweh ; et Yahweh mit des ténèbres entre vous et les Égyptiens ; il ramena sur eux la mer, et elle les couvrit. Vos yeux ont vu ce que j’ai fait en Égypte, et vous restâtes longtemps dans le désert. —

And when they cried out unto Jehovah, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness many days.

Je vous menai au pays des Amorrhéens, qui habitaient de l’autre côté du Jourdain, et ils combattirent contre vous. Je les livrai entre vos mains ; vous prîtes possession de leur pays, et je les détruisis de devant vous.

And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that dwelt beyond the Jordan: and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand, and ye possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

Balac, fils de Séphor, roi de Moab, se leva et combattit Israël ; il fit appeler Balaam, fils de Béor, pour qu’il vous maudît.

Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel: and he sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you;

Mais je ne voulus pas écouter Balaam ; il vous bénit, et je vous délivrai de la main de Balac. —

but I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.

Vous passâtes le Jourdain et vous arrivâtes à Jéricho. Les hommes de Jéricho combattirent contre vous, puis les Amorrhéens, les Phérézéens, les Chananéens, les Héthéens, les Gergéséens, les Hévéens et les Jébuséens, et je les livrai entre vos mains.

And ye went over the Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.

J’envoyai devant vous les frelons qui les chassèrent de devant vous, ainsi que les deux rois des Amorrhéens ; ce ne fut ni par ton épée ni par ton arc.

And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

Je vous donnai ainsi une terre que vous n’aviez pas cultivée, des villes que vous n’aviez pas bâties et que vous habitez, des vignes et des oliviers que vous n’aviez pas plantés et dont vous mangez les fruits.

And I gave you a land whereon thou hadst not labored, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell therein; of vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

Craignez donc Yahweh et servez-le avec intégrité et vérité ; ôtez les dieux qu’ont servis vos pères de l’autre côté du fleuve et en Égypte, et servez Yahweh.

Now therefore fear Jehovah, and serve him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt; and serve ye Jehovah.

Que si vous ne trouvez pas bon de servir Yahweh, choisissez aujourd’hui qui vous voulez servir, soit les dieux que servaient vos pères au delà du fleuve, soit les dieux des Amorrhéens dont vous habitez le pays. Pour moi et ma maison, nous servirons Yahweh. »

And if it seem evil unto you to serve Jehovah, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah.

Le peuple répondit et dit : « Loin de nous de vouloir abandonner Yahweh pour servir d’autres dieux !

And the people answered and said, Far be it from us that we should forsake Jehovah, to serve other gods;

Car c’est Yahweh, notre Dieu, qui nous a fait monter, nous et nos pères, du pays d’Égypte, de la maison de servitude ; et qui a opéré sous nos yeux ces grands prodiges, et qui nous a gardés tout le long du chemin que nous avons parcouru, et parmi tous les peuples au milieu desquels nous avons passé.

for Jehovah our God, he it is that brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and that did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed;

Yahweh a chassé de devant nous tous les peuples, et les Amorrhéens qui habitaient ce pays. Nous aussi, nous servirons Yahweh, car il est notre Dieu. »

and Jehovah drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites that dwelt in the land: therefore we also will serve Jehovah; for he is our God.

Josué dit au peuple : « Vous ne pouvez pas servir Yahweh, car c’est un Dieu saint, c’est un Dieu jaloux ; il ne pardonnera pas vos transgressions et vos péchés.

And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve Jehovah; for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgression nor your sins.

Si vous abandonnez Yahweh et que vous serviez des dieux étrangers, il se retournera, il vous fera du mal et vous consumera, après vous avoir fait du bien. »

If ye forsake Jehovah, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.

Le peuple dit à Josué : « Non ! car nous servirons Yahweh. »

And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve Jehovah.

Josué dit au peuple : « Vous êtes témoins contre vous-même que vous avez choisi Yahweh pour le servir. » Ils répondirent : « Nous en sommes témoins. »

And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you Jehovah, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.

Il dit : « Et maintenant ôtez les dieux étrangers qui sont au milieu de vous, et tournez vos cœurs vers Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël. »

Now therefore put away, [said he], the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto Jehovah, the God of Israel.

Et le peuple dit à Josué : « Nous servirons Yahweh, notre Dieu, et nous obéirons à sa voix. »

And the people said unto Joshua, Jehovah our God will we serve, and unto his voice will we hearken.

C’est ainsi que Josué conclut en ce jour-là une alliance avec le peuple, et qu’il lui donna à Sichem des lois et des ordonnances.

So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

Josué écrivit ces paroles dans le livre de la loi de Dieu. Il prit une grande pierre et la dressa là, sous le chêne qui était dans le lieu consacré à Yahweh.

And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Jehovah.

Et Josué dit à tout le peuple : « Voici, cette pierre servira de témoin contre nous, car elle a entendu toutes les paroles que Yahweh nous a dites ; elle servira de témoin contre vous, afin que vous ne reniiez pas votre Dieu. »

And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it hath heard all the words of Jehovah which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest ye deny your God.

Et Josué renvoya le peuple, chacun dans son héritage. 4. Chap. xxiv, 29-33 : Mort des hommes de Dieu. — Mort de Josué, sa sépulture (xxiv, 29-31). Sépulture des ossements de Joseph (xxiv, 32). Mort d’Eléazar (xxiv, 33).

So Joshua sent the people away, every man unto his inheritance.

Après cela, Josué, fils de Nun, serviteur de Yahweh, mourut, âgé de cent dix ans.

And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.

On l’ensevelit dans le territoire qu’il avait eu en partage, à Thamnath-Saré, dans la montagne d’Ephraïm, au nord du mont Gaas.

And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

Israël servit Yahweh pendant toute la vie de Josué, et pendant toute la vie des anciens qui survécurent à Josué et qui connaissaient tout ce que Yahweh avait fait en faveur d’Israël.

And Israel served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of Jehovah, that he had wrought for Israel.

Les ossements de Joseph, que les enfants d’Israël avaient emportés d’Égypte, furent enterrés à Sichem, dans la pièce de terre que Jacob avait achetée cent kesitas des fils de Hémor, père de Sichem, et ils devinrent la propriété des fils de Joseph.

And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money: and they became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

Eléazar, fils d’Aaron, mourut, et on l’enterra à Gabaa, ville de Phinées, son fils, auquel elle avait été donnée, dans la montagne d’Ephraïm.

And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill-country of Ephraim.
