Cycles of apostasy and deliverance in pre-monarchic Israel

A series of stories about charismatic deliverers — Deborah, Gideon, Samson, and others — who arose during the turbulent centuries between Joshua and the rise of the monarchy. The book frames Israelite history as a recurring cycle of apostasy, oppression, and rescue.

Chapitre 1

Après la mort de Josué, les enfants d’Israël consultèrent Yahweh, en disant : « Qui de nous montera le premier contre les Chananéens pour les combattre ? »

And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked of Jehovah, saying, Who shall go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?

Yahweh répondit : « Juda montera ; voici que j’ai livré le pays entre ses mains. »

And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

Et Juda dit à Siméon, son frère : « Monte avec moi dans le pays que le sort m’a assigné, et nous combattrons les Chananéens ; j’irai aussi avec toi dans le pays que le sort t’a assigné. » Et Siméon alla avec lui.

And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

Juda monta, et Yahweh livra entre leurs mains les Chananéens et les Phérézéens ; ils battirent dix mille hommes à Bézec.

And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

Ayant trouvé à Bézec Adoni-Bésec, ils l’attaquèrent et ils battirent les Chananéens et les Phérézéens.

And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

Adoni-Bésec prit la fuite, mais ils le poursuivirent et, l’ayant saisi, ils lui coupèrent les pouces des mains et des pieds.

But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

Adoni-Bésec dit : « Soixante-dix rois, ayant les pouces des pieds et des mains coupés, ramassaient les miettes sous ma table ; ce que j’ai fait, Dieu me le rend. » On l’emmena à Jérusalem, et il y mourut.

And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered [their food] under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

Les fils de Juda attaquèrent Jérusalem et, l’ayant prise, ils la frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée et mirent le feu à la ville.

And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

Ensuite les fils de Juda descendirent pour combattre les Chananéens qui habitaient la montagne, le Négéb et la Séphéla.

And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the South, and in the lowland.

Juda marcha contre les Chananéens qui habitaient à Hébron, appelée autrefois Cariath-Arbé, et il battit Sésaï, Ahiman et Tholmaï.

And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba); and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

Il marcha de là contre les habitants de Dabir, qui s’appelait autrefois Cariath-Sépher.

And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (Now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.)

Caleb dit : « À celui qui frappera Cariath-Sépher et qui la prendra, je donnerai pour femme ma fille Axa. »

And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

Othoniel, fils de Cénez, frère cadet de Caleb, s’en empara, et Caleb lui donna sa fille Axa pour femme.

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb`s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

Lorsqu’elle alla chez Othoniel, elle l’excita à demander à son père un champ. Elle descendit de son âne, et Caleb lui dit : « Qu’as-tu ? »

And it came to pass, when she came [unto him], that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?

Elle lui répondit : « Fais-moi une faveur, car tu m’as établie dans un pays desséché ; donne-moi des sources d’eau. » Et Caleb lui donna les sources supérieures et les sources inférieures.

And she said unto him, Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

Les fils du Cinéen, beau-frère de Moïse, montèrent de la ville des palmiers, avec les fils de Juda, dans le désert de Juda, au midi d’Arad, et ils vinrent s’établir avec le peuple.

And the children of the Kenite, Moses` brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.

Juda se mit en marche avec Siméon, son frère, et ils battirent les Chananéens qui habitaient Séphaath ; ils dévouèrent la ville par anathème, et on l’appela Horma.

And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

Juda s’empara aussi de Gaza et de son territoire, d’Ascalon et de son territoire, d’Accaron et de son territoire.

Also Judah took Gaza with the border thereof, and Ashkelon with the border thereof, and Ekron with the border thereof.

Yahweh fut avec Juda ; et Juda prit possession de la montagne, mais il ne put chasser les habitants de la plaine, parce qu’ils avaient des chars de fer.

And Jehovah was with Judah; and drove out [the inhabitants of] the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

On donna Hébron à Caleb, comme l’avait dit Moïse, et il en chassa les trois fils d’Enac.

And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken: and he drove out thence the three sons of Anak.

Les fils de Benjamin ne chassèrent point les Jébuséens qui habitaient Jérusalem, et les Jébuséens ont habité à Jérusalem avec les fils de Benjamin, jusqu’à ce jour.

And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

La maison de Joseph, elle aussi, monta contre Béthel, et Yahweh fut avec eux.

And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el; and Jehovah was with them.

La maison de Joseph fit faire une reconnaissance à Béthel, ville dont le nom était autrefois Luz.

And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth-el. (Now the name of the city beforetime was Luz.)

Les gardes, ayant aperçu un homme qui sortait de la ville, ils lui dirent : « Montre-nous par où on peut entrer dans la ville, et nous te ferons grâce. »

And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.

Il leur montra par où ils pourraient entrer dans la ville, et ils frappèrent la ville du tranchant de l’épée, mais ils laissèrent aller cet homme avec toute sa famille.

And he showed them the entrance into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.

Cet homme se rendit dans le pays des Héthéens ; il bâtit une ville et la nomma Luz, et c’est son nom jusqu’à ce jour.

And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.

Manassé ne chassa pas les habitants de Bethsan et des villes de sa dépendance, ni ceux de Thanac et des villes de sa dépendance, ni les habitants de Dor et des villes de sa dépendance, ni les habitants de Jéblaam et des villes de sa dépendance, ni les habitants de Mageddo et des villes de sa dépendance ; et les Chananéens s’enhardirent à rester dans ce pays.

And Manasseh did not drive out [the inhabitants of] Beth-shean and its towns, nor [of] Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

Lorsqu’Israël fut devenu assez fort, il assujettit les Chananéens à un tribut, et ne les chassa point.

And it came to pass, when Israel was waxed strong, that they put the Canaanites to taskwork, and did not utterly drive them out.

Ephraïm ne chassa point les Chananéens qui habitaient à Gaser, et les Chananéens habitèrent au milieu d’Ephraïm, à Gaser.

And Ephraim drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

Zabulon ne chassa point les habitants de Cétron, ni les habitants de Naalol ; et les Chananéens habitèrent au milieu de Zabulon, mais ils furent soumis à un tribut.

Zebulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to taskwork.

Aser ne chassa point les habitants d’Accho, ni les habitants de Sidon, ni ceux d’Ahalab, d’Achazib, d’Helba, d’Aphec et de Rohob ;

Asher drove not out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;

et les fils d’Aser demeurèrent au milieu des Chananéens, habitants du pays, car ils ne les chassèrent point.

but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

Nephthali ne chassa point les habitants de Beth-Samès, ni les habitants de Beth-Anath, et il demeura au milieu des Chananéens, habitants du pays ; mais les habitants de Beth-Samès et de Beth-Anath furent soumis à un tribut en sa faveur.

Naphtali drove not out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to taskwork.

Les Amorrhéens refoulèrent dans la montagne les fils de Dan, et ne les laissèrent pas descendre dans la plaine.

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country; for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley;

Les Amorrhéens s’enhardirent à rester à Har-Harés, à Ajalon et à Salebim ; mais la main de la maison de Joseph s’appesantit sur eux, et ils furent soumis à un tribut.

but the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to taskwork.

Le territoire des Amorrhéens s’étendait de la montée d’Acrabbim, de Séla, et au-dessus.

And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

Chapitre 2

L’ange de Yahweh monta de Galgala à Bokim, et dit : « Je vous ai fait monter hors d’Égypte et je vous ai amenés dans le pays que j’ai juré à vos pères de vous donner. J’ai dit : Jamais je ne romprai mon alliance avec vous ;

And the angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you:

et vous, vous ne ferez, point alliance avec les habitants de ce pays, vous renverserez leurs autels. Mais vous n’avez pas obéi à ma voix. Pourquoi avez-vous fait cela ?

and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this?

Et moi aussi, j’ai dit : Je ne les chasserai point devant vous ; ils seront à vos côtés, et leurs dieux vous seront un piège. »

Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be [as thorns] in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

Comme l’ange de Yahweh disait ces paroles à tous les enfants d’Israël, le peuple éleva la voix et pleura.

And it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

Ils donnèrent à ce lieu le nom de Bokim, et ils y offrirent des sacrifices à Yahweh. 2. Chap. ii, 6-iii, 6 : État religieux. — Fidélité de la génération qui avait connu Josué (ii, 6-10a). Infidélité des générations suivantes : abandon de Yahweh et culte des dieux étrangers, sévérité des châtiments (ii, 10b-17). Les juges ; leur rôle (ii, 18) ; pas de conversion durable (ii, 19) ; raisons de la permanence des nations étrangères autour d’Israël, (ii, 20-23). Peuples qui subsistèrent (ii, 1-6).

And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto Jehovah.

Josué renvoya le peuple, et les enfants d’Israël s’en allèrent chacun dans son héritage pour prendre possession du pays.

Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

Le peuple servit Yahweh pendant toute la vie de Josué, et pendant toute la vie des anciens qui survécurent à Josué et qui avaient vu toute la grande œuvre que Yahweh avait accomplie en faveur d’Israël.

And the people served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Jehovah that he had wrought for Israel.

Josué, fils de Nun, serviteur de Yahweh, mourut âgé de cent dix ans.

And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.

On l’ensevelit dans le territoire qu’il avait eu en partage, à Thamnath-Hérès, dans la montagne d’Ephraïm, au nord du mont Gaas.

And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

Toute cette génération fut aussi recueillie auprès de ses pères, et il s’éleva après elle une autre génération qui ne connaissait pas Yahweh, ni l’œuvre qu’il avait faite en faveur d’Israël.

And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, that knew not Jehovah, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel.

Les enfants d’Israël firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh, et ils servirent les Baals.

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim;

Ils abandonnèrent Yahweh, le Dieu de leurs pères, qui les avait fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, et ils allèrent après d’autres dieux, d’entre les dieux des peuples qui les entouraient ; ils se prosternèrent devant eux et ils irritèrent Yahweh.

and they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked Jehovah to anger.

Abandonnant Yahweh, ils servirent Baal et les Astartés.

And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

La colère de Yahweh s’enflamma contre Israël ; il les livra aux mains des pillards qui les pillèrent, et il les vendit entre les mains de leurs ennemis d’alentour, et ils ne purent plus tenir devant leurs ennemis.

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that despoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

Partout où ils allaient, la main de Yahweh était contre eux pour leur malheur, comme Yahweh l’avait dit, comme Yahweh le leur avait juré, et ils en vinrent à une grande détresse.

Whithersoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had spoken, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed.

Yahweh suscitait des juges qui les délivraient de la main de ceux qui les pillaient.

And Jehovah raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that despoiled them.

Mais ils n’écoutèrent pas leurs juges, car ils se prostituèrent à d’autres dieux et se prosternèrent devant eux. Ils se détournèrent promptement de la voie qu’avaient suivie leurs pères en obéissant aux commandements de Yahweh ; ils ne firent pas de même.

And yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; [but] they did not so.

Lorsque Yahweh leur suscitait des juges, Yahweh était avec le juge et il les délivrait de la main de leurs ennemis, tant que le juge vivait ; car Yahweh se repentait à cause de leurs gémissements devant ceux qui les opprimaient et les tourmentaient.

And when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

Mais, à la mort du juge, ils se corrompaient de nouveau plus que leurs pères, en allant après d’autres dieux pour les servir et se prosterner devant eux ; ils n’abandonnaient pas leurs errements et leur opiniâtreté.

But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.

Alors la colère de Yahweh s’enflamma contre Israël, et il dit : « Puisque cette nation a transgressé mon alliance que j’avais prescrite à ses pères, et puisqu’ils n’ont pas obéi à ma voix,

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;

moi, je ne chasserai plus devant eux une seule des nations que Josué a laissées quand il est mort,

I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;

afin de mettre par elles Israël à l’épreuve, pour voir s’ils seront attentifs, ou non, à suivre la voie de Yahweh, comme leurs pères y ont été attentifs. »

that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

Et Yahweh laissa en repos, sans se hâter de les chasser, ces nations qu’il n’avait pas livrées entre les mains de Josué.

So Jehovah left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

Chapitre 3

Voici les nations que Yahweh laissa en repos pour éprouver par elles Israël, tous ceux qui n’avaient pas connu toutes les guerres de Chanaan,

Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, even as many [of Israel] as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

et cela uniquement pour l’instruction des générations d’Israël, afin de leur apprendre la guerre, à ceux-là du moins qui ne l’avaient pas connue auparavant.

only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof:

Ces nations étaient : les cinq princes des Philistins, tous les Chananéens et les Sidoniens, et les Hévéens qui habitaient la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusqu’à l’entrée de Hamath.

[namely], the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath.

Ces peuples devaient servir à mettre Israël à l’épreuve, pour savoir s’ils obéiraient aux commandements que Yahweh avait prescrits à leurs pères par Moïse.

And they were [left], to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

Et les enfants d’Israël habitèrent au milieu des Chananéens, des Héthéens, des Amorrhéens, des Phérézéens, des Hévéens et des Jébuséens ;

And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.

Les enfants d’Israël firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh ; oubliant Yahweh, ils servirent les Baals et les Aschéroth.

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgat Jehovah their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth.

La colère de Yahweh s’enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit entre les mains de Chusan-Rasathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, et les enfants d’Israël furent asservis huit ans à Chusan-Rasathaïm.

Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

Les enfants d’Israël, crièrent vers Yahweh, et Yahweh leur suscita un libérateur qui les délivra, Othoniel, fils de Cénez, frère cadet de Caleb.

And when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb`s younger brother.

L’Esprit de Yahweh vint sur lui ; il jugea Israël et partit pour la guerre ; Yahweh livra entre ses mains Chusan-Rasathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, et sa main fut puissante contre Chusan-Rasathaïm.

And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.

Le pays fut en repos pendant quarante ans, et Othoniel, fils de Cénez, mourut. 2. Chap. iii, 12-30 : Aod. — Nouvelle infidélité (iii, 12a) ; oppression d’Églon, roi de Moab ; ses conquêtes (iii, 12b-14). And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

Les enfants d’Israël firent de nouveau ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh, et Yahweh fortifia Églon, roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu’ils faisaient ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh.

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah.

Églon s’adjoignit les fils d’Ammon et Amalec, et il se mit en marche. Il battit Israël, et ils s’emparèrent de la ville des Palmiers.

And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm-trees.

Les enfants d’Israël furent asservis dix-huit ans à Églon, roi de Moab.

And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

Les enfants d’Israël crièrent vers Yahweh, et Yahweh leur suscita un libérateur, Aod, fils de Géra, Benjamite, qui ne se servait pas de la main droite. Les enfants d’Israël envoyèrent par lui un présent à Églon, roi de Moab.

But when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. And the children of Israel sent tribute by him unto Eglon the king of Moab.

Aod se fit une épée à deux tranchants, longue d’une coudée, et il la ceignit sous ses vêtements, sur sa hanche droite.

And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

Il offrit le Présent à Églon, roi de Moab ; or Églon était un homme très gras.

And he offered the tribute unto Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man.

Lorsqu’il eut achevé d’offrir le présent, il renvoya les gens qui avaient apporté le présent.

And when he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people that bare the tribute.

Et lui-même revint depuis les idoles qui sont près de Galgala, et il dit : « Ô roi, j’ai quelque chose de secret à te dire. » Le roi dit : « Silence ! » Et tous ceux qui étaient auprès de lui sortirent.

But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king. And he said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

Aod l’aborda comme il était assis seul dans sa chambre d’été, et il dit : « J’ai pour toi une parole de Dieu. » Églon se leva de son siège.

And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

Alors Aod, avançant la main gauche, tira l’épée qui était sur sa hanche droite, et la lui enfonça dans le ventre.

And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:

and the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.

Aod sortit par l’escalier extérieur, ferma sur Églon les portes de la chambre haute et tira le verrou.

Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room upon him, and locked them.

Quand il fut sorti, les serviteurs du roi vinrent et regardèrent ; et voici que les portes de la chambre haute étaient fermées au verrou. Ils dirent : « Sans doute il se couvre les pieds dans la chambre d’été. »

Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, Surely he is covering his feet in the upper chamber.

Ils attendirent longtemps jusqu’à en avoir honte, et, comme il n’ouvrait pas les portes de la chambre haute, ils prirent la clef et ouvrirent ; et voici que leur maître gisait par terre, sans vie.

And they tarried till they were ashamed; and, behold, he opened not the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened [them], and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

Pendant leurs délais, Aod prit la fuite, dépassa les idoles et se sauva à Séïrath.

And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah.

Aussitôt arrivé, il sonna de la trompette dans la montagne d’Éphraïm. Les enfants d’Israël descendirent avec lui de la montagne, et il se mit à leur tête.

And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them.

Il leur dit : « Suivez-moi ! car Yahweh a livré entre vos mains vos ennemis, les Moabites. » Ils descendirent à sa suite, s’emparèrent des gués du Jourdain vis-à-vis de Moab, et ne laissèrent passer personne.

And he said unto them, Follow after me; for Jehovah hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over.

Ils battirent Moab en ce temps-là, environ dix mille hommes, tous robustes et tous vaillants, et pas un n’échappa.

And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man.

En ce jour, Moab fut humilié sous la main d’Israël, et le pays fut en repos pendant quatre-vingt ans. 3. Chap. iii, 31 : Un « petit juge » Samgar.

So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

Après lui, il y eut Samgar, fils d’Anath, qui battit six cents hommes des Philistins avec un aiguillon à bœufs ; lui aussi fut un libérateur d’Israël.

And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox-goad: and he also saved Israel.

Chapitre 4

Les enfants d’Israël firent encore ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh, après la mort d’Aod.

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, when Ehud was dead.

Et Yahweh les vendit entre les mains de Jabin, roi de Chanaan, qui régnait à Asor ; le chef de son armée était Sisara, et il habitait à Haroseth-Goïm.

And Jehovah sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.

Les enfants d’Israël crièrent vers Yahweh, car Jabin avait neuf cents chars de fer et, depuis vingt ans, il opprimait durement les enfants d’Israël.

And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

En ce temps-là, Débora, prophétesse, femme de Lapidoth, rendait la justice en Israël.

Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, she judged Israel at that time.

Elle siégeait sous le palmier de Débora, entre Rama et Béthel, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm ; et les enfants d’Israël montaient vers elle pour être jugés.

And she dwelt under the palm-tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in the hill-country of Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.

Elle envoya appeler Barac, fils d’Abinoëm, de Cédés en Nephthali, et elle lui dit : « N’est-ce pas l’ordre qu’a donné Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël ? Va, rends-toi sur le mont Thabor, et prends avec toi dix mille hommes des fils de Nephthali et des fils de Zabulon.

And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded, [saying], Go and draw unto mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?

Je t’amènerai, au torrent de Cison, Sisara, le chef de l’armée de Jabin, avec ses chars et ses troupes, et je le livrerai entre tes mains. »

And I will draw unto thee, to the river Kishon, Sisera, the captain of Jabin`s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thy hand.

Barac lui dit : « Si tu viens avec moi, j’irai ; mais si tu ne viens pas avec moi, je n’irai pas. »

And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go; but if thou wilt not go with me, I will not go.

Elle répondit : « Oui, j’irai avec toi, mais, dans l’expédition que tu vas faire, la gloire ne sera pas pour toi ; car Yahweh livrera Sisara entre les mains d’une femme. » Et Débora se leva et elle se rendit avec Barac à Cédès.

And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding, the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honor; for Jehovah will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

Barac convoqua Zabulon et Nephthali à Cédès ; et dix mille hommes partirent à sa suite, et Débora partit avec lui.

And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh; and there went up ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.

Héber, le Cinéen, s’était emparé des Cinéens, des fils de Hobab, beau-frère de Moïse, et il avait dressé sa tente jusqu’au chêne de Sennim, près de Cédès.

Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, even from the children of Hobab the brother-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far as the oak in Zaanannim, which is by Kedesh.

On informa Sisara que Barac, fils d’Abinoëm, était parti vers le mont Thabor ;

And they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor.

et Sisara, fit venir d’Haroseth-Goïm, vers le torrent de Cison, tous ses chars, neuf cents chars de fer, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui.

And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles, unto the river Kishon.

Alors Débora dit à Barac : « Lève-toi, car voici le jour où Yahweh a livré Sisara entre tes mains. Est-ce que Yahweh n’est pas sorti devant toi ? » Et Barac descendit du mont Thabor, ayant dix mille hommes à sa suite.

And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which Jehovah hath delivered Sisera into thy hand; is not Jehovah gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.

Yahweh mit en déroute Sisara, tous ses chars et toute son armée, par le tranchant de l’épée, devant Barac ; et Sisara descendit de son char et s’enfuit à pied.

And Jehovah discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot, and fled away on his feet.

Barac poursuivit les chars et l’armée jusqu’à Haroseth-Goïm, et toute l’armée de Sisara tomba sous le tranchant de l’épée ; pas un homme n’échappa.

But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; there was not a man left.

Sisara se réfugia à pied dans la tente de Jahel, femme de Héber, le Cinéen ; car il y avait paix entre Jabin, roi d’Asor, et la maison de Héber, le Cinéen.

Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

Jahel sortit au-devant de Sisara et lui dit : « Entre, mon seigneur, entre chez moi, ne crains point. » Il entra chez elle dans la tente, et elle le cacha sous une couverture.

And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And he turned in unto her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.

Il lui dit : « Donne-moi, je te prie, un peu d’eau à boire, car j’ai soif. » Elle ouvrit l’outre du lait, lui donna à boire et le couvrit.

And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.

Il lui dit : « Tiens-toi à l’entrée de la tente et, si l’on vient t’interroger, en disant : Y a-t-il un homme ici ? tu répondras : Non. »

And he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and inquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No.

Jahel, femme de Héber, saisit un pieu de la tente et, ayant pris en main le marteau, elle s’approcha de lui doucement et lui enfonça dans la tempe le pieu, qui pénétra dans le sol, car il dormait profondément, étant accablé de fatigue ; et il mourut.

Then Jael Heber`s wife took a tent-pin, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground; for he was in a deep sleep; so he swooned and died.

Et voici, comme Barac poursuivait Sisara, Jahel sortit à sa rencontre et lui dit : « Viens, et je te montrerai l’homme que tu cherches. » Il entra chez elle et vit Sisara étendu mort, le pieu dans la tempe.

And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will show thee the man whom thou seekest. And he came unto her; and, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the tent-pin was in his temples.

En ce jour, Dieu humilia Jabin, roi de Chanaan, devant les enfants d’Israël.

So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.

Et la main des enfants d’Israël s’appesantit de plus en plus sur Jabin, roi de Chanaan, jusqu’à ce qu’ils eussent détruit Jabin, roi de Chanaan.

And the hand of the children of Israel prevailed more and more against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

Chapitre 5

En ce jour-là, Débora et Barac, fils d’Abinoëm, chantèrent en disant :

Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying,

Les chefs se sont mis à la tête en Israël ; le peuple s’est volontairement offert pour le combat, bénissez-en Yahweh !

For that the leaders took the lead in Israel, For that the people offered themselves willingly, Bless ye Jehovah.

Écoutez, ô rois : princes, prêtez l’oreille. C’est moi, c’est moi qui chanterai Yahweh ; je dirai un cantique à Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël.

Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, [even] I, will sing unto Jehovah; I will sing praise to Jehovah, the God of Israel.

Yahweh, quand tu sortis de Séïr, quand tu t’avanças des campagnes d’Edom, la terre trembla, les cieux mêmes se fondirent, et les nuées se fondirent en eau.

Jehovah, when thou wentest forth out of Seir, When thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, The earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, Yea, the clouds dropped water.

Devant Yahweh s’ébranlèrent les montagnes, ce Sinaï, devant Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël.

The mountains quaked at the presence of Jehovah, Even yon Sinai at the presence of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

Aux jours de Samgar, fils d’Anath, aux jours de Jahel, les routes étaient désertes, et les voyageurs prenaient des sentiers détournés.

In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, In the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, And the travellers walked through byways.

Les campagnes étaient dans l’abandon en Israël, jusqu’à ce que je me sois levée, moi Débora, que je me sois levée, une mère en Israël.

The rulers ceased in Israel, they ceased, Until that I Deborah arose, That I arose a mother in Israel.

On choisissait des dieux nouveaux ; alors la guerre était aux portes, et l’on ne voyait ni bouclier ni lance chez quarante milliers en Israël !

They chose new gods; Then was war in the gates: Was there a shield or spear seen Among forty thousand in Israel?

Mon cœur s’élance vers les conducteurs d’Israël, vers ceux du peuple qui se sont offerts : Bénissez Yahweh !

My heart is toward the governors of Israel, That offered themselves willingly among the people: Bless ye Jehovah.

Vous qui montez de blanches ânesses, qui vous asseyez sur des tapis, et vous qui parcourez les chemins, chantez !

Tell [of it], ye that ride on white asses, Ye that sit on rich carpets, And ye that walk by the way.

Que de leur voix les archers, près des abreuvoirs, célèbrent les justices de Yahweh, les justices envers ses campagnes en Israël ! Alors le peuple de Yahweh est descendu dans ses portes.

Far from the noise of archers, in the places of drawing water, There shall they rehearse the righteous acts of Jehovah, [Even] the righteous acts of his rule in Israel. Then the people of Jehovah went down to the gates.

Éveille-toi, éveille-toi, Débora ! Éveille-toi, éveille-toi, dis au cantique ! Lève-toi, Barac, et fais tes prisonniers, fils d’Abinoëm !

Awake, awake, Deborah; Awake, awake, utter a song: Arise, Barak, and lead away thy captives, thou son of Abinoam.

En ce moment descends, reste des nobles du peuple ! Yahweh, descends vers moi parmi ces héros !

Then came down a remnant of the nobles [and] the people; Jehovah came down for me against the mighty.

D’Ephraïm sont venus ceux qui ont leur racine en Amalec ; derrière toi, Benjamin s’est joint à tes troupes ; de Machir, des chefs sont descendus ; de Zabulon des conducteurs, avec le bâton du scribe.

Out of Ephraim [came down] they whose root is in Amalek; After thee, Benjamin, among thy peoples; Out of Machir came down governors, And out of Zebulun they that handle the marshal`s staff.

Les princes d’Issachar sont avec Débora, Issachar est à côté de Barac ; dans la plaine il est envoyé sur ses pas. Près des ruisseaux de Ruben, il y eut de grandes résolutions du cœur :

And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; As was Issachar, so was Barak; Into the valley they rushed forth at his feet. By the watercourses of Reuben There were great resolves of heart.

Pourquoi es-tu resté au milieu de tes pâturages, à écouter le chalumeau de tes pâtres ? Près des ruisseaux de Ruben, il y eut de grandes résolutions du cœur !

Why sattest thou among the sheepfolds, To hear the pipings for the flocks? At the watercourses of Reuben There were great searchings of heart.

Galaad n’a pas quitté sa demeure, au delà du Jourdain ; et Dan, pourquoi s’est-il tenu dans ses vaisseaux ? Aser est resté tranquille sur le rivage de la mer, et il est demeuré dans ses ports.

Gilead abode beyond the Jordan: And Dan, why did he remain in ships? Asher sat still at the haven of the sea, And abode by his creeks.

Mais Zabulon est un peuple qui expose son âme à la mort, ainsi que Nephtali, sur ses hauts plateaux.

Zebulun was a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death, And Naphtali, upon the high places of the field.

Les rois sont venus, ils ont livré bataille ; alors ils ont livré bataille, les rois de Chanaan, à Thanac, au bord des eaux de Mageddo ; ils n’ont pas remporté un seul lingot d’argent.

The kings came and fought; Then fought the kings of Canaan. In Taanach by the waters of Megiddo: They took no gain of money.

Du ciel on a combattu pour nous, de leurs sentiers les étoiles ont combattu contre Sisara.

From heaven fought the stars, From their courses they fought against Sisera.

Le torrent de Cison a roulé leurs cadavres. le torrent des anciens temps, le torrent de Cison. — Ô mon âme, avance hardiment ! —

The river Kishon swept them away, That ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, march on with strength.

Alors retentirent les sabots des chevaux, dans la course, la course rapide de leurs guerriers.

Then did the horsehoofs stamp By reason of the prancings, the prancings of their strong ones.

Maudissez Méroz, dit l’ange de Yahweh, maudissez, maudissez ses habitants ! Car ils ne sont pas venus au secours de Yahweh, au secours de Yahweh, avec les vaillants.

Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of Jehovah. Curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof, Because they came not to the help of Jehovah, To the help of Jehovah against the mighty.

Bénie soit entre les femmes Jahel, femme de Héber, le Cinéen ; entre les troupes qui habitent sous la tente bénie soit-elle !

Blessed above women shall Jael be, The wife of Heber the Kenite; Blessed shall she be above women in the tent.

Il demanda de l’eau, elle donna du lait ; dans la coupe d’honneur, elle offrit le lait le plus pur.

He asked water, [and] she gave him milk; She brought him butter in a lordly dish.

D’une main elle saisit le pieu, et de sa droite, le marteau de l’ouvrier. Elle frappe Sisara, elle lui brise la tête, elle fracasse et transperce sa tempe ;

She put her hand to the tent-pin, And her right hand to the workmen`s hammer; And with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote through his head; Yea, she pierced and struck through his temples.

à ses pieds, il s’affaisse, il tombe, il est étendu ; à ses pieds il s’affaisse, il tombe : là où il s’affaisse, là il gît inanimé.

At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay; At her feet he bowed, he fell; Where he bowed, there he fell down dead.

Par la fenêtre, à travers le treillis, elle regarde, la mère de Sisara, et pousse des cris : « Pourquoi son char tarde-t-il à venir ? Pourquoi est-elle si lente la marche de ses chariots ? »

Through the window she looked forth, and cried, The mother of Sisera [cried] through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarry the wheels of his chariots?

Les plus avisées de ses dames lui répondent, et elle se répète à elle-même leurs paroles :

Her wise ladies answered her, Yea, she returned answer to herself,

« N’ont-ils pas trouvé, ne se partagent-ils pas le butin ? Une jeune fille, deux jeunes filles pour chaque guerrier ; des vêtements de couleur pour butin à Sisara, des vêtements de couleur variée pour butin ; un vêtement de couleur, deux vêtements de couleur variée, pour les épaules de l’épouse ! »

Have they not found, have they not divided the spoil? A damsel, two damsels to every man; To Sisera a spoil of dyed garments, A spoil of dyed garments embroidered, Of dyed garments embroidered on both sides, on the necks of the spoil?

Qu’ainsi périssent tous tes ennemis, ô Yahweh ! Et que ceux qui l’aiment soient comme le soleil, quand il se lève dans sa force !

So let all thine enemies perish, O Jehovah: But let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

Chapitre 6

Les enfants d’Israël firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh, et Yahweh les livra entre les mains de Madian, pendant sept ans.

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

La main de Madian fut puissante contre Israël. À cause de Madian, les enfants d’Israël se firent les antres qui sont dans les montagnes, les cavernes et les hauteurs fortifiées.

And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

Quand Israël avait semé, Madian montait avec Amalec et les fils de l’Orient, et ils marchaient contre lui.

And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

Campés en face d’Israël, ils dévastaient les productions de le terre jusque près de Gaza, et ne laissaient aucune subsistance en Israël, ni brebis, ni bœufs, ni ânes.

and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

Car ils montaient avec leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes, et venaient nombreux comme des nuées de sauterelles ; eux et leurs chameaux étaient innombrables, et ils venaient dans le pays pour le dévaster.

For they came up with their cattle and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.

Israël fut très affaibli à cause de Madian, et les enfants d’Israël crièrent vers Yahweh.

And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah.

Lorsque les enfants d’Israël eurent crié vers Yahweh au sujet de Madian,

And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah because of Midian,

Yahweh envoya un prophète aux enfants d’Israël. Il leur dit : « Ainsi parle Yahweh le Dieu d’Israël : Je vous ai fait monter de l’Égypte, et je vous ai fait sortir de la maison de servitude.

that Jehovah sent a prophet unto the children of Israel: and he said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

Je vous ai délivrés de la main des Égyptiens et de la main de tous vos oppresseurs ; je les ai chassés devant vous, et je vous ai donné leur pays.

and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;

Je vous ai dit : je suis Yahweh, votre Dieu ; vous ne craindrez point les dieux des Amorrhéens dans le pays desquels vous habitez. Mais vous n’avez pas écouté ma voix. » 2. Chap. vi, 11-40 : Vocation de Gédéon. — L’ange de Yahweh ; Gédéon sauveur d’Israël (vi, 11-14) ; Gédéon demande un signe (vi, 15-18). and I said unto you, I am Jehovah your God; ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice.

Et l’Ange de Yahweh vint, et il s’assit sous le térébinthe d’Éphra, qui appartenait à Joas, de la famille d’Abiéser. Gédéon, son fils, battait le froment dans le pressoir, pour le mettre à l’abri de Madian.

And the angel of Jehovah came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

L’Ange de Yahweh lui apparut et lui dit : « Yahweh est avec toi, vaillant héros. »

And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him, and said unto him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valor.

Gédéon lui dit : « Ah ! mon seigneur, si Yahweh est avec nous, pourquoi toutes ces choses nous sont-elles arrivées ? Et où sont tous ses prodiges que nos pères nous ont racontés, en disant : Yahweh ne nous a-t-il pas fait monter de l’Égypte ? Et maintenant Yahweh nous abandonne et nous livre entre les mains de Madian. »

And Gideon said unto him, Oh, my lord, if Jehovah is with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? but now Jehovah hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.

Yahweh se tourna vers lui et dit : « Va avec cette force que tu as, et délivre Israël de la main de Madian ; ne t’ai-je pas envoyé ? »

And Jehovah looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian: have not I sent thee?

Gédéon lui dit : « Ah ! Seigneur, avec quoi délivrerai-je Israël ? Voici, ma famille est la plus pauvre en Manassé, et je suis le plus petit dans la maison de mon père. »

And he said unto him, Oh, Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father`s house.

Yahweh lui dit : « Je serai avec toi, et tu battras Madian comme un seul homme. »

And Jehovah said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

Gédéon lui dit : « Si j’ai trouvé grâce à vos yeux, donnez-moi un signe que c’est vous qui me parlez.

And he said unto him, If now I have found favor in thy sight, then show me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me.

Ne vous éloignez point d’ici jusqu’à ce que je revienne auprès de vous, que j’apporte mon offrande et que je la dépose devant vous. » Et Yahweh dit : « Je resterai jusqu’à ce que tu reviennes. »

Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

Gédéon, étant entré, apprêta un chevreau et, avec un épha de farine, il fit des pains sans levain ; puis, ayant mis la chair dans une corbeille et le jus dans un vase, il les lui apporta sous le térébinthe et les lui offrit.

And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

L’Ange de Yahweh lui dit : « Prends la chair et les pains sans levain, pose-les sur ce rocher, et verse le jus. » Et il fit ainsi.

And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

L’Ange de Yahweh étendit l’extrémité du bâton qu’il avait à la main, et toucha la chair et les pains sans levain. Aussitôt le feu s’éleva du rocher, et consuma la chair et les pains sans levain, et l’Ange de Yahweh disparut à ses yeux.

Then the angel of Jehovah put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Jehovah departed out of his sight.

Gédéon vit que c’était l’Ange de Yahweh et Gédéon dit : « Malheur à moi, Seigneur Yahweh, car j’ai vu l’Ange de Yahweh face à face. »

And Gideon saw that he was the angel of Jehovah; and Gideon said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of Jehovah face to face.

Yahweh lui dit : « Sois en paix, ne crains point, tu ne mourras pas. »

And Jehovah said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

Gédéon bâtit là un autel à Yahweh et l’appela : « Yahweh-Schalôm ; » cet autel existe encore aujourd’hui à Éphra d’Abiéser.

Then Gideon built an altar there unto Jehovah, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Cette nuit-là, Yahweh dit à Gédéon : « Prends le jeune taureau de ton père, et le second taureau de sept ans. Renverse l’autel de Baal qui est à ton père, et coupe l’aschéra qui est auprès.

And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Take thy father`s bullock, even the second bullock seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;

Tu bâtiras ensuite, au sommet de ce lieu fort, un autel à Yahweh, ton Dieu, et tu le disposeras ; tu prendras le second taureau et tu offriras un holocauste avec le bois de l’aschéra que tu auras coupée. »

and build an altar unto Jehovah thy God upon the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which thou shalt cut down.

Gédéon prit dix hommes parmi ses serviteurs, et exécuta ce que Yahweh lui avait dit : mais, comme il n’osait le faire de jour par crainte de la maison de son père et des gens de la ville, il le fit de nuit.

Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Jehovah had spoken unto him: and it came to pass, because he feared his father`s household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

Lorsque les gens de la ville se levèrent le lendemain matin, voici que l’autel de Baal était renversé, que l’aschéra qui était auprès était coupée, et que le second taureau était offert en holocauste sur l’autel récemment bâti.

And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

Ils se dirent l’un à l’autre : « Qui a fait cela ? » et ils s’informèrent et firent des recherches. On leur dit : « C’est Gédéon, fils de Joas, qui a fait cela. »

And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

Alors les gens de la ville dirent à Joas : « Fais sortir ton fils et qu’il meure, car il a renversé l’autel de Baal et coupé l’aschéra qui était auprès. »

Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the Asherah that was by it.

Joas dit à tous ceux qui se tenaient là contre lui : « Est-ce à vous de prendre parti pour Baal ? Ou bien est-ce à vous de le secourir ? Quiconque prendra parti pour Baal sera mis à mort avant demain matin. Si Baal est Dieu, que lui-même prenne en main sa cause, puisqu’on a renversé son autel ! »

And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye contend for Baal? Or will ye save him? he that will contend for him, let him be put to death whilst [it is yet] morning: if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one hath broken down his altar.

En ce jour, un donna à Gédéon le nom de Jérobaal, en disant : « Que Baal se défende contre lui, puisqu’il a renversé son autel ! »

Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal contend against him, because he hath broken down his altar.

Tout Madian, Amalec et les fils de l’Orient se rassemblèrent et, ayant passé le Jourdain, ils campèrent dans la plaine de Jezraël.

Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

L’Esprit de Yahweh revêtit Gédéon ; il sonna de la trompette, et les Abiésérites s’assemblèrent pour marcher à sa suite.

But the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

Il envoya des messagers dans tout Manassé, qui s’assembla aussi pour le suivre. Il envoya des messagers dans Aser, dans Zabulon et dans Nephtali, et ils montèrent à leur rencontre.

And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

Gédéon dit à Dieu : « Si vous voulez sauver Israël par ma main, comme vous l’avez dit,

And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken,

voici, je mettrai une toison de laine sur l’aire : si la toison seule se couvre de rosée, et que tout le sol alentour reste sec, je connaîtrai que vous délivrerez Israël par ma main, comme vous l’avez dit. »

behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken.

Et il arriva ainsi. Le jour suivant, s’étant levé de bon matin, il pressa la toison, et en fit sortir la rosée, plein une coupe d’eau.

And it was so; for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.

Gédéon dit à Dieu : « Que votre colère ne s’enflamme pas contre moi ; que je puisse encore parler une fois : je voudrais une fois encore seulement faire une épreuve avec la toison : que la toison seule reste sèche, et que la rosée tombe sur tout le sol alentour. »

And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me make trial, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

Et Dieu fit ainsi cette nuit-là : la toison seule resta sèche, et tout le sol se couvrit de rosée.

And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

Chapitre 7

Jérobaal, qui est Gédéon, avec tout le peuple qui était avec lui, se leva de bon matin et alla camper au-dessus de la source de Harad. Le camp de Madian était au nord de celui de Gédéon, vers la colline de Moré, dans la plaine.

Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod: and the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

Yahweh dit à Gédéon : « Le peuple que tu as avec toi est trop nombreux pour que je livre Madian entre ses mains, de peur qu’Israël n’en tire gloire contre moi, en disant : C’est ma main qui m’a délivré.

And Jehovah said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.

Fais donc publier ceci aux oreilles du peuple : Que celui qui a peur et qui tremble s’en retourne et se retire de la montagne de Gelboé. » Vingt-deux mille hommes parmi le peuple s’en retournèrent, et il en resta dix mille.

Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.

Yahweh dit à Gédéon : « Le peuple est encore trop nombreux. Fais-les descendre près de l’eau, et là je t’en ferai un triage. Celui dont je te dirai : Qu’il aille avec toi, ira avec toi ; et celui dont je te dirai : Qu’il n’aille pas avec toi, n’ira pas avec toi. »

And Jehovah said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

Gédéon fit descendre le peuple près de l’eau, et Yahweh dit à Gédéon : « Tous ceux qui laperont l’eau avec la langue, comme lape le chien, mets-les à part ; de même tous ceux qui se mettront à genoux pour boire. »

So he brought down the people unto the water: and Jehovah said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.

Ceux qui lapèrent l’eau dans leur main, en la portant à leur bouche, furent au nombre de trois cents hommes ; tout le reste du peuple s’était mis à genoux pour boire.

And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.

Et Yahweh dit à Gédéon : « C’est avec ces trois cents hommes qui ont lapé que je vous sauverai et que je livrerai Madian entre tes mains ; que tout le reste du peuple s’en aille chacun chez soi. »

And Jehovah said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand; and let all the people go every man unto his place.

Les trois cents prirent des vivres du peuple et ses trompettes ; puis Gédéon renvoya tout le reste des hommes d’Israël chacun dans sa tente, et il garda les trois cents hommes. Le camp des Madianites était au-dessous de lui, dans la plaine.

So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man unto his tent, but retained the three hundred men: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

Pendant cette nuit, Yahweh dit à Gédéon : « Lève-toi, descends au camp, car je l’ai livré entre tes mains.

And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Arise, get thee down into the camp; for I have delivered it into thy hand.

Si tu crains de l’attaquer, descends avec Phara, ton serviteur ;

But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Purah thy servant down to the camp:

tu écouteras ce qu’ils disent, et ensuite tes mains seront fortifiées et tu descendras sans crainte au camp. » Il descendit avec Phara, son serviteur, jusqu’aux avant-postes du camp.

and thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thy hands be strengthened to go down into the camp. Then went he down with Purah his servant unto the outermost part of the armed men that were in the camp.

— Madian, Amalec et tous les fils de l’Orient étaient répandus dans la plaine, nombreux comme les sauterelles, et leurs chameaux étaient sans nombre comme le sable sur le bord de la mer. —

And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is upon the sea-shore for multitude.

Gédéon arriva, et voici qu’un homme racontait à son camarade un songe ; il disait : « J’ai eu un songe et voici : un pain d’orge roulait dans le camp de Madian ; il vint jusqu’à la tente, la heurta, et elle tomba ; il l’a renversée sens dessus dessous, et la tente est tombée. »

And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man telling a dream unto his fellow; and he said, Behold, I dreamed a dream; and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came unto the tent, and smote it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.

Son camarade répondit et dit : « Ce n’est pas autre chose que l’épée de Gédéon, fils de Joas, homme d’Israël ; Dieu a livré entre ses mains Madian et tout le camp. »

And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: into his hand God hath delivered Midian, and all the host.

Lorsque Gédéon eut entendu le récit du songe et son explication, il se prosterna et, étant revenu au camp d’Israël, il dit : « Levez-vous, car Yahweh a livré entre nos mains le camp de Madian. »

And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped; and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, Arise; for Jehovah hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.

Il divisa en trois colonnes les trois cents hommes, et leur remit à tous des trompettes et des cruches vides, avec des flambeaux dans les cruches,

And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers.

et il leur dit : « Vous me regarderez, et vous ferez comme moi. Dès que j’arriverai aux abords du camp, vous ferez ce que je ferai.

And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.

Quand je sonnerai de la trompette, moi et tous ceux qui sont avec moi, vous aussi vous sonnerez de la trompette tout autour du camp, et vous direz : Pour Yahweh et pour Gédéon ! »

When I blow the trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, For Jehovah and for Gideon.

Gédéon et les cent hommes qui étaient avec lui arrivèrent aux abords du camp au commencement de la veille du milieu, comme on venait de relever les sentinelles ; ils sonnèrent de la trompette et brisèrent les cruches qu’ils avaient à la main.

So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.

Alors les trois corps sonnèrent de la trompette et brisèrent les cruches et, saisissant les flambeaux de la main gauche, et de la droite les trompettes pour en sonner, ils s’écrièrent : « Épée pour Yahweh et pour Gédéon ! »

And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands wherewith to blow; and they cried, The sword of Jehovah and of Gideon.

Ils restèrent chacun à sa place autour du camp ; et tout le camp se mit à courir, à crier et à fuir.

And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran; and they shouted, and put [them] to flight.

Pendant que les trois cents hommes sonnaient de la trompette, Yahweh fit tourner aux Madianites l’épée les uns contre les autres et contre tout le camp. And they blew the three hundred trumpets, and Jehovah set every man`s sword against his fellow, and against all the host; and the host fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.

Les hommes d’Israël se rassemblèrent, ceux de Nephthali, d’Aser et de tout Manassé, et ils poursuivirent Madian.

And the men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian.

Gédéon envoya des messagers dans toute la montagne d’Éphraïm, pour dire : « Descendez à la rencontre de Madian, et occupez avant eux le passage des eaux jusqu’à Bethbéra, ainsi que les gués du Jourdain. » Tous les hommes d’Éphraïm se rassemblèrent, et ils occupèrent les eaux jusqu’à Bethbéra, ainsi que les gués du Jourdain.

And Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill-country of Ephraim, saying, Come down against Midian, and take before them the waters, as far as Beth-barah, even the Jordan. So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth-barah, even the Jordan.

Ayant saisi deux princes de Madian, Oreb et Zeb, ils tuèrent Oreb au rocher d’Oreb, et ils tuèrent Zeb au pressoir de Zeb. Ils poursuivirent Madian, et ils apportèrent les têtes d’Oreb et de Zeb à Gédéon, de l’autre côté du Jourdain.

And they took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.

Chapitre 8

Les hommes d’Éphraïm dirent à Gédéon : « Que signifie ta conduite envers nous, de ne pas nous appeler quand tu allais combattre Madian ? » Et ils le querellèrent avec violence.

And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him sharply.

Gédéon leur répondit : « Qu’ai-je fait en comparaison de vous ? Le grappillage d’Éphraïm ne vaut-il pas mieux que la vendange d’Abiéser ?

And he said unto them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

C’est entre vos mains que Yahweh a livré les princes de Madian, Oreb et Zeb. Que pouvais-je faire en comparaison de vous ? » Lorsqu’il eut ainsi parlé, leur colère contre lui s’apaisa.

God hath delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

Gédéon arriva au Jourdain, et il le passa, lui et les trois cents hommes qui étaient avec lui, fatigués et continuant à poursuivre.

And Gideon came to the Jordan, [and] passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing.

Il dit aux gens de Soccoth : « Donnez, je vous prie, des galettes de pain au peuple qui m’accompagne, car ils sont fatigués, et je suis à la poursuite de Zébée et de Salmana, rois de Madian. »

And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.

Les chefs de Soccoth répondirent : « Le poing de Zébée et de Salmana est-il déjà dans ta main, pour que nous donnions du pain à ta troupe ? »

And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

Gédéon leur dit : « Eh bien, lorsque Yahweh aura livré entre mes mains Zébée et Salmana, je déchirerai votre chair avec des épines du désert et des chardons. »

And Gideon said, Therefore when Jehovah hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

De là il monta à Phanuel, et il adressa aux gens de Phanuel la même parole. Les gens de Phanuel lui répondirent comme avaient répondu les gens de Soccoth.

And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them in like manner; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.

Et il dit aux gens de Phanuel : « Quand je reviendrai vainqueur, je raserai cette tour. »

And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

Zébée et Salmana étaient à Carcor, et leur armée avec eux, quinze mille hommes environ, tous ceux qui étaient restés de l’armée entière des fils de l’Orient ; car il était tombé cent vingt mille hommes tirant l’épée.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the host of the children of the east; for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

Gédéon monta par le chemin de ceux qui habitent sous des tentes, à l’orient de Nobé et de Jegbaa, et il battit le camp, qui se croyait en sûreté.

And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.

Zébée et Salmana prirent la fuite ; il les poursuivit et s’empara des deux rois de Madian, Zébée et Salmana, et il mit en déroute tout le camp.

And Zebah and Zalmunna fled; and he pursued after them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

Gédéon, fils de Joas, revint de la bataille par la montée de Harès.

And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.

Ayant saisi un jeune homme d’entre les gens de Soccoth, il l’interrogea, et celui-ci lui écrivit les noms des chefs et des anciens de Soccoth, soixante-dix-sept hommes.

And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy and seven men.

Alors Gédéon vint vers les gens de Soccoth et dit : « Voici Zébée et Salmana, au sujet desquels vous m’avez insulté, en disant : Le poing de Zébée et de Salmana est-il déjà dans ta main pour que nous donnions du pain à tes gens fatigués ? »

And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom ye did taunt me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

Il saisit les anciens de la ville et, ayant pris des épines du désert et des ronces, il en châtia les gens de Soccoth.

And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

Il rasa aussi la tour de Phanuel, et tua les hommes de la ville.

And he brake down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

Il dit à Zébée et à Salmana : « Comment étaient les hommes que vous avez tués au Thabor ? » ils dirent : « Ils étaient comme toi ; chacun d’eux avait l’air d’un fils de roi. »

Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

Il dit : « C’étaient mes frères, fils de ma mère : Yahweh est vivant ! si vous les aviez laissés vivre, je ne vous tuerais pas. »

And he said, They were my brethren, the sons of my mother: as Jehovah liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

Et il dit à Jéther, son premier-né : « Lève-toi, tue-les. » Mais le jeune homme ne tira pas son épée, parce qu’il avait peur, car il était encore un jeune garçon.

And he said unto Jether his first-born, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

Zébée et Salmana dirent : « Lève-toi toi-même et tombe sur nous ; car tel est l’homme, telle est sa force. » Gédéon se leva et tua Zébée et Salmana ; et il prit les croissants qui étaient aux cous de leurs chameaux. 5. Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels` necks.

Les hommes d’Israël dirent à Gédéon : « Règne sur nous, toi et ton fils, et le fils de ton fils, car tu nous as délivrés des mains de Madian. »

Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son`s son also; for thou hast saved us out of the hand of Midian.

Gédéon leur dit : « Je ne dominerai point sur vous et mon fils ne dominera point sur vous : c’est Yahweh qui dominera sur vous. »

And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: Jehovah shall rule over you.

Gédéon leur dit : « J’ai une demande à vous faire : donnez-moi chacun les anneaux de votre butin. » — Les ennemis avaient des anneaux d’or, car ils étaient Ismaélites. —

And Gideon said unto them, I would make a request of you, that ye would give me every man the ear-rings of his spoil. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

Ils dirent : « Nous les donnerons volontiers. » Et ils étendirent un manteau, sur lequel chacun jeta les anneaux de son butin.

And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the ear-rings of his spoil.

Le poids des anneaux d’or qu’avait demandés Gédéon fut de mille sept cents sicles d’or, sans les croissants, les pendants d’oreilles et les vêtements de pourpre que portaient les rois de Madian, et sans les colliers qui étaient aux cous de leurs chameaux.

And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels` necks.

Avec cet or, Gédéon fit un éphod, et il le déposa dans sa ville, à Ephra. Tout Israël alla se prostituer là après cet éphod, et il fut un piège pour Gédéon et pour sa maison.

And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel played the harlot after it there; and it became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

Madian fut humilié devant les enfants d’Israël et il ne leva plus la tête ; et le pays fut en repos pendant quarante ans, aux jours de Gédéon.

So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

Jérobaal, fils de Joas, s’en retourna et demeura dans sa maison.

And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

Gédéon eut soixante-dix fils, issus de lui, car il eut de nombreuses femmes.

And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten; for he had many wives.

Sa concubine, qui était à Sichem, lui enfanta, elle aussi, un fils qui reçut le nom d’Abimélech.

And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, and he called his name Abimelech.

Gédéon, fils de Joas, mourut dans une heureuse vieillesse, et il fut enterré dans le sépulcre de Joas, son père, à Éphra d’Abiéser.

And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Lorsque Gédéon fut mort, les enfants d’Israël se prostituèrent de nouveau aux Baals, et ils prirent Baal-Berith pour leur dieu.

And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and played the harlot after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.

Les enfants d’Israël ne se souvinrent plus de Yahweh, leur Dieu, qui les avait délivrés de la main de tous leurs ennemis autour d’eux ;

And the children of Israel remembered not Jehovah their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side;

et ils ne montrèrent point d’attachement à la maison de Jérobaal-Gédéon, selon tout le bien qu’il avait fait à Israël.

neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, [who is] Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel.

Chapitre 9

Abimélech, fils de Jérobaal, se rendit à Sichem vers les frères de sa mère, et il leur adressa ces paroles, ainsi qu’à toute la famille de la maison du père de sa mère :

And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother`s brethren, and spake with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother`s father, saying,

« Dites, je vous prie, aux oreilles de tous les habitants de Sichem : Lequel vaut mieux pour vous que soixante-dix hommes, tous fils de Jérobaal, dominent sur vous, ou qu’un seul homme domine sur vous ? Souvenez-vous que je suis vos os et votre chair. »

Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are threescore and ten persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

Les frères de sa mère ayant répété à son sujet toutes ces paroles aux oreilles de tous les habitants de Sichem, le cœur de ces derniers s’inclina vers Abimélech, car ils se disaient : « C’est notre frère. »

And his mother`s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

Ils lui donnèrent soixante-dix sicles d’argent, tirés de la maison de Baal-Berith, et Abimélech s’en servit pour soudoyer des gens de rien et des aventuriers, qui s’attachèrent à lui.

And they gave him threescore and ten [pieces] of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.

Il vint dans la maison de son père à Éphra, et il tua ses frères, fils de Jérobaal, au nombre de soixante-dix, sur une même pierre ; il n’échappa que Joatham, le plus jeune fils de Jerobaal, parce qu’il s’était caché.

And he went unto his father`s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

Alors tous les habitants de Sichem et toute la maison de Mello s’assemblèrent ; ils vinrent et proclamèrent roi Abimélech, près du térébinthe du monument qui se trouve à Sichem. 7. And all the men of Shechem assembled themselves together, and all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.

Lorsque Joatham en eut été informé, il alla se placer sur le sommet du mont Garizim et, élevant la voix, il leur cria en disant : « Écoutez-moi, habitants de Sichem, afin que Dieu vous écoute !

And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

Les arbres se mirent en chemin pour oindre un roi qui les commandât. Ils dirent à l’olivier : Règne sur nous.

The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree, Reign thou over us.

Mais l’olivier leur dit : Renoncerais-je à mon huile, qui fait ma gloire devant Dieu et devant les hommes, pour aller me balancer au-dessus des autres arbres ?

But the olive-tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

Et les arbres dirent au figuier : Viens, toi, règne sur nous.

And the trees said to the fig-tree, Come thou, and reign over us.

Mais le figuier leur dit : Renoncerais-je à ma douceur et à mon excellent fruit, pour aller me balancer au-dessus des autres arbres ?

But the fig-tree said unto them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

Et les arbres dirent à la vigne : Viens, toi, règne sur nous.

And the trees said unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

Mais la vigne leur dit : Renoncerais-je à mon vin, qui réjouit Dieu et les hommes, pour aller me balancer au-dessus des autres arbres ?

And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

Alors tous les arbres dirent au buisson d’épines : Viens, toi, règne sur nous.

Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

Et le buisson d’épines dit aux arbres : Si vraiment vous voulez m’oindre pour votre roi, venez, confiez-vous à mon ombrage ; sinon, qu’un feu sorte du buisson d’épines et dévore les cèdes du Liban !…

And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

Maintenant, si c’est avec équité et droiture que vous avez agi en faisant roi Abimélech, si vous vous êtes bien conduits envers Jérobaal et sa maison, et si vous l’avez traité selon le mérite de ses mains,

Now therefore, if ye have dealt truly and uprightly, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands

— car mon père a combattu pour vous, il a exposé sa vie et vous a délivrés de la main de Madian ;

(for my father fought for you, and adventured his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

et vous, vous vous êtes levés aujourd’hui contre la maison de mon père, vous avez tué ses fils, au nombre de soixante-dix, sur une même pierre, et vous avez établi roi sur les hommes de Sichem Abimélech, fils de sa servante, parce qu’il est votre frère, —

and ye are risen up against my father`s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);

si c’est avec équité et droiture que vous avez agi en ce jour envers Jérobaal et sa maison, eh bien, qu’Abimélech fasse votre joie, et que vous fassiez la sienne aussi !

if ye then have dealt truly and uprightly with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

Sinon, qu’un feu sorte d’Abimélech et dévore les habitants de Sichem et la maison de Mello, et qu’un feu sorte des habitants de Sichem et de la maison de Mello et dévore Abimélech ! »

but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

Joatham se retira et prit la fuite ; il se rendit à Béra et il y demeura, par crainte d’Abimélech, son frère. 8. Chap. ix, 22-49 : Révolte des Sichémites ; leur défaite. — Les Sichémites se révoltent contre Abimélech, embuscades dans les montagnes (ix, 22-25) ; Gaal prend la tête des révoltés (ix, 26-29). Zébul, gouverneur de la ville, en informe Abimélech (ix, 30-33), qui défait Gaal (ix, 34-41), puis les Sichémites (ix, 42-44) ; il s’empare de la ville (ix, 45), et de la tour de Sichem (ix, 46-49).

And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

Abimélech domina trois ans sur Israël.

And Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.

Et Dieu envoya un esprit mauvais entre Abimélech et les habitants de Sichem, et les habitants de Sichem devinrent infidèles à Abimélech :

And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

afin que le crime commis sur les soixante-dix fils de Jérobaal fût vengé et que leur sang retombe sur Abimélech, leur frère, qui les avait tués, et sur les hommes de Sichem qui l’avaient aidé à tuer ses frères.

that the violence done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and upon the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.

Les hommes de Sichem placèrent en embuscade contre lui, sur les sommets des montagnes, des gens qui dépouillaient tous ceux qui passaient près d’eux sur le chemin ; et cela fut rapporté à Abimélech.

And the men of Shechem set liers-in-wait for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

Gaal, fils d’Obed, vint avec ses frères, et ils passèrent à Sichem. Les hommes de Sichem prirent confiance en lui.

And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.

Ils sortirent dans la campagne, vendangèrent leurs vignes, foulèrent les raisins et firent une fête ; puis, étant entrés dans la maison de leur dieu, ils mangèrent et burent, et ils maudirent Abimélech.

And they went out into the field, and gathered their vineyards, and trod [the grapes], and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

Et Gaal, fils d’Obed, dit : « Qui est Abimélech, et qui est Sichem, pour que nous le servions ? N’est-il pas fils de Jérobaal, et Zébul n’est-il pas son officier ? Servez les hommes d’Emor, père de Sichem ; mais nous, pourquoi servirions-nous Abimélech ?

And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve ye the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: but why should we serve him?

Ah ! que ne suis-je le chef de ce peuple ! Je chasserais Abimélech. » Et il dit à Abimélech : « Renforce ton armée et sors ! »

And would that this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

Zébul, gouverneur de la ville, apprit les propos de Gaal, fils d’Obed, et sa colère s’enflamma.

And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

Il envoya secrètement des messagers à Abimélech, pour lui dire : « Voici que Gaal, fils d’Obed, est venu à Sichem avec ses frères, et voici qu’ils soulèvent la ville contre toi.

And he sent messengers unto Abimelech craftily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren are come to Shechem; and, behold, they constrain the city [to take part] against thee.

Lève-toi de nuit, toi et le peuple qui est avec toi, et mets-toi en embuscade dans la campagne.

Now therefore, up by night, thou and the people that are with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

Le matin, au lever du soleil, lève-toi et fonds sur la ville ; et lorsque Gaal et le peuple qui est avec lui sortiront contre toi, tu lui feras selon ce que l’occasion te permettra. »

and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and rush upon the city; and, behold, when he and the people that are with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

Abimélech et tout le peuple qui était avec lui se levèrent de nuit, et ils se mirent en embuscade près de Sichem, divisés en quatre corps.

And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

Gaal, fils d’Obed, sortit, et il se plaça à l’entrée de la porte de la ville. Aussitôt Abimélech et tout le peuple qui était avec lui se levèrent de l’embuscade.

And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from the ambushment.

En voyant le peuple, Gaal dit à Zébul : « Voici des gens qui descendent du sommet des montagnes. » Zébul lui répondit : « C’est l’ombre des montagnes que tu prends pour des hommes. »

And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the tops of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

Gaal reprit la parole et dit : « Voici une troupe qui descend du milieu du pays, et un corps qui arrive par le chemin du chêne des devins. »

And Gaal spake again and said, See, there come people down by the middle of the land, and one company cometh by the way of the oak of Meonenim.

Zébul lui répondit : « Où donc est ta bouche avec laquelle tu disais : Qui est Abimélech, pour que nous le servions ? N’est-ce point là le peuple que tu méprisais ? Sors maintenant et livre-lui bataille ! »

Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, that thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out now, I pray, and fight with them.

Gaal fit une sortie, à la tête des hommes de Sichem, et livra bataille à Abimélech.

And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

Abimélech le poursuivit, et Gaal s’enfuit devant lui, et beaucoup de ses hommes tombèrent morts jusqu’à l’entrée de la porte.

And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and there fell many wounded, even unto the entrance of the gate.

Abimélech s’arrêta à Ruma ; et Zébul chassa Gaal et ses frères, qui ne purent plus rester à Sichem.

And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

Le lendemain, le peuple sortit dans la campagne. Abimélech en ayant été informé,

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

prit sa troupe, la partagea en trois corps, et se mit en embuscade dans la campagne. Dès qu’il aperçut le peuple sortant de la ville, il se leva contre eux et les battit.

And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and, behold, the people came forth out of the city; And he rose up against them, and smote them.

Abimélech et les corps qui étaient avec lui se jetèrent en avant et se placèrent à l’entrée de la porte de la ville ; deux de ces corps se jetèrent sur tous ceux qui étaient dans la campagne et les battirent.

And Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and the two companies rushed upon all that were in the field, and smote them.

Et Abimélech donna l’assaut à la ville pendant toute la journée ; il s’en empara et tua le peuple qui s’y trouvait ; puis il rasa la ville et y sema du sel.

And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that were therein: and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

À cette nouvelle, tous les hommes de la tour de Sichem se rendirent dans la forteresse de la maison du dieu Berith.

And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard thereof, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.

Dès qu’on eut annoncé à Abimélech que tous les habitants de la tour de Sichem s’y étaient rassemblés,

And it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

Abimélech monta sur le mont Selmon, lui et tout le peuple qui était avec lui. Abimélech prit en main une hache, coupa une branche d’arbre, la souleva et la mit sur son épaule. Il dit au peuple qui était avec lui : « Ce que vous m’avez vu faire, hâtez-vous de le faire comme moi. »

And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder: and he said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

Et tous les gens aussi coupèrent chacun une branche et suivirent Abimélech ; ils placèrent les branches contre la forteresse, et ils la livrèrent au feu avec ceux qu’elle renfermait. Et tous les gens de la tour de Sichem périrent aussi, mille environ, hommes et femmes. 9. Chap. ix, 50-57 : Siège de Thébès et mort d’Abimélech. — Prise de Thébès (ix, 50) ; assaut de la tour (ix, 51, 52) ; Abimélech tué par une meule (ix, 53-55). Justice divine et accomplissement de la prophétie (ix, 56, 57).

And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

De là, Abimélech marcha contre Thébés ; il assiégea Thébés et s’en empara.

Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

Il y avait au milieu de la ville une forte tour où se réfugièrent tous les habitants de la ville, hommes et femmes ; ayant fermé la porte sur eux, ils montèrent sur le toit de la tour.

But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut themselves in, and gat them up to the roof of the tower.

Abimélech vint jusqu’à la tour ; il l’attaqua et s’approcha de la porte de la tour pour y mettre le feu.

And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and drew near unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

Alors une femme lança sur la tête d’Abimélech un morceau de meule de moulin et lui brisa le crâne.

And a certain woman cast an upper millstone upon Abimelech`s head, and brake his skull.

Il appela aussitôt le jeune homme qui portait ses armes, et lui dit : « Tire ton épée et donne-moi la mort, afin qu’on ne dise pas de moi : C’est une femme qui l’a tué. » Le jeune homme le transperça, et il mourut.

Then he called hastily unto the young man his armorbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and kill me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

Quand les hommes d’Israël virent qu’Abimélech était mort, ils s’en allèrent chacun dans sa maison.

And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

Ainsi Dieu fit retomber sur Abimélech le mal qu’il avait fait à son père, en tuant ses soixante-dix frères ;

Thus God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren;

et Dieu fit retomber sur la tête des gens de Sichem toute leur méchanceté. Ainsi s’accomplit sur eux la malédiction de Joatham, fils de Jérobaal.

and all the wickedness of the men of Shechem did God requite upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Chapitre 10

Après Abimélech, Thola, fils de Phua, fils de Dodo, homme d’Issachar, se leva pour délivrer Israël ; il demeurait à Samir, dans la montagne d’Ephraïm.

And after Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in the hill-country of Ephraim.

Il fut juge en Israël pendant vingt-trois ans ; puis il mourut et fut enterré à Samir.

And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.

Après lui se leva Jaïr, de Galaad, qui jugea Israël pendant vingt-deux ans.

And after him arose Jair, the Gileadite; and he judged Israel twenty and two years.

Il avait trente fils, qui montaient trente ânons, et qui possédaient trente villes appelées encore aujourd’hui Bourgs de Jaïr, et situées dans le pays de Galaad.

And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havvoth-jair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead.

Et Jaïr mourut, et il fut enterré à Camon. IV. — JEPHTÉ. [X, 6 — XII, 15.] 1. Chap. x, 6-18 : Israël opprimé par les Ammonites. — Nouvelle infidélité (x, 6) ; dix-huit ans d’oppression par les Ammonites (x, 7-9). Appel à Yahweh, reproches et repentir (x, 10-16). Les deux camps (x, 17, 18).

And Jair died, and was buried in Kamon.

Les enfants d’Israël firent encore ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh ; ils servirent les Baals et les Astartés, les dieux de Syrie, les dieux de Sidon, les dieux de Moab, les dieux des fils d’Ammon et les dieux des Philistins, et ils abandonnèrent Yahweh et ne le servirent plus.

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim, and the Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Sidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook Jehovah, and served him not.

La colère de Yahweh s’enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit entre les mains des Philistins et entre les mains des fils d’Ammon.

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the children of Ammon.

Ces derniers opprimèrent et écrasèrent les enfants d’Israël en cette année-là ; et cette oppression dura dix-huit ans pour tous les enfants d’Israël qui habitaient de l’autre côté du Jourdain, dans le pays des Amorrhéens en Galaad.

And they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel that year: eighteen years [oppressed they] all the children of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.

Les fils d’Ammon passèrent le Jourdain pour combattre aussi Juda, Benjamin et la maison d’Éphraïm ; et Israël fut réduit à une grande détresse.

And the children of Ammon passed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed.

Les enfants d’Israël crièrent vers Yahweh, en disant : « Nous avons péché contre vous, car nous avons abandonné notre Dieu et nous avons servi les Baals. »

And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, saying, We have sinned against thee, even because we have forsaken our God, and have served the Baalim.

Yahweh dit aux enfants d’Israël : « Est-ce que je ne vous ai pas délivrés des Égyptiens, des Amorrhéens, des fils d’Ammon, des Philistins ?

And Jehovah said unto the children of Israel, [Did] not [I save you] from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

Et lorsque les Sidoniens, Amalec et Maon vous ont opprimés, et que vous avez crié vers moi, ne vous ai-je pas sauvés de leurs mains ?

The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried unto me, and I saved you out of their hand.

Mais vous, vous m’avez abandonné et vous avez servi d’autres dieux ; c’est pourquoi je ne vous délivrerai plus.

Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will save you no more.

Allez, invoquez les dieux que vous vous êtes choisis ; qu’ils vous délivrent au temps de votre détresse ! »

Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.

Les enfants d’Israël dirent à Yahweh : « Nous avons péché, traitez-nous tous comme il vous semblera bon. Seulement daignez nous délivrer en ce jour. »

And the children of Israel said unto Jehovah, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; only deliver us, we pray thee, this day.

Et ils ôtèrent du milieu d’eux les dieux étrangers, et ils servirent Yahweh, et son âme ne put supporter les souffrances d’Israël.

And they put away the foreign gods from among them, and served Jehovah; and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

Les fils d’Ammon se rassemblèrent et campèrent en Galaad, et les enfants d’Israël se réunirent et campèrent à Maspha.

Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpah.

Le peuple, les chefs de Galaad se dirent les uns aux autres : « Quel est l’homme qui commencera l’attaque contre les fils d’Ammon ? Il deviendra chef de tous les habitants de Galaad. »

And the people, the princes of Gilead, said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Chapitre 11

Jephté, le Galaadite, était un vaillant guerrier. Il était fils d’une courtisane et c’est Galaad qui avait engendré Jephté.

Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

La femme de Galaad lui enfanta des fils, et les fils de cette femme grandirent et chassèrent Jephté, en lui disant : « Tu n’hériteras pas dans la maison de notre père, car tu es fils d’une autre femme. »

And Gilead`s wife bare him sons; and when his wife`s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father`s house; for thou art the son of another woman.

Et Jephté s’enfuit loin de ses frères, et il habita dans le pays de Tob. Des gens de rien se rassemblèrent autour de Jephté, et ils faisaient avec lui des excursions.

Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

Quelque temps après, les fils d’Ammon firent la guerre à Israël.

And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

Pendant que les fils d’Ammon faisaient la guerre à Israël, les anciens de Galaad allèrent chercher Jephté au pays de Tob.

And it was so, that, when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

Ils dirent à Jephté : « Viens, tu seras notre général, et nous combattrons les fils d’Ammon. »

and they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

Jephté dit aux anciens de Galaad : « Ne m’avez-vous pas haï et chassé de la maison de mon père ? Pourquoi venez-vous à moi, maintenant que vous êtes dans la détresse ? »

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father`s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephté : « C’est à cause de cela que nous revenons à toi maintenant, pour que tu marches avec nous, que tu combattes les fils d’Ammon, et que tu sois notre chef, le chef de tous les habitants de Galaad. »

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Jephté répondit aux anciens de Galaad : « Si vous me ramenez pour combattre les fils d’Ammon, et que Yahweh les livre entre mes mains, je serai votre chef. »

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Jehovah deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephté : « Que Yahweh soit témoin entre nous : nous ferons certainement ce que tu dis. »

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.

Et Jephté partit avec les anciens de Galaad. Le peuple l’établit sur lui pour chef et général, et Jephté répéta toutes ses paroles devant Yahweh à Maspha. 3. Chap. xi, 12-28 : Pourparlers avec les Ammonites. — Jephté envoie des messagers au roi d’Ammon, griefs des Ammonites (xi, 12, 13). Jephté les réfute, en rappelant l’histoire de l’occupation du pays amorrhéen (xi, 14-23), en appelant aux volontés de Yahweh (xi, 24), à la longue durée d’une possession incontestée (xi, 25-27). Obstination du roi ammonite (xi, 28).

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah.

Jephté envoya des messagers au roi des fils d’Ammon, pour lui dire : « Qu’y a-t-il entre moi et toi, que tu sois venu contre moi pour faire la guerre à mon pays ? »

And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?

Le roi des fils d’Ammon répondit aux messagers de Jephté : « C’est qu’Israël, lorsqu’il monta d’Égypte, s’empara de mon pays, depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Jaboc et au Jourdain. Rends-le maintenant de bon gré. »

And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan: now therefore restore those [lands] again peaceably.

Jephté envoya de nouveau des messagers au roi des fils d’Ammon,

And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;

et il lui dit : « Ainsi parle Jephté : Israël ne s’est emparé ni du pays de Moab, ni du pays des fils d’Ammon.

and he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

Car lorsqu’Israël monta d’Égypte, il marcha dans le désert jusqu’à la mer Rouge, et il arriva à Cadès.

but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;

Alors Israël envoya des messagers au roi d’Édom, pour lui dire : Laisse-moi, je te prie, passer par ton pays ; mais le roi d’Édom n’y consentit pas. Il en envoya aussi au roi de Moab, qui refusa également ; et Israël resta à Cadés.

then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

Puis, marchant par le désert, il tourna le pays d’Édom et le pays de Moab, et arriva à l’orient du pays de Moab. Et ils campèrent au delà de l’Arnon, et ils ne vinrent pas sur la frontière de Moab, car l’Arnon est la frontière de Moab.

Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

De là, Israël envoya des messagers à Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, roi de Hésebon ; et Israël lui dit : Laisse-nous, je te prie, passer par ton pays jusqu’à notre lieu.

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.

Mais Séhon ne se fia pas assez à Israël pour le laisser passer sur son territoire. Séhon rassembla tout son peuple ; ils campèrent à Jasa, et il combattit contre Israël.

But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

Et Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, livra Séhon et tout son peuple entre les mains d’Israël, qui les battit ; et Israël s’empara de tout le pays des Amorrhéens qui habitaient dans cette contrée ;

And Jehovah, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

ils s’emparèrent de tout le territoire des Amorrhéens, depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Jaboc, et depuis le désert jusqu’au Jourdain.

And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.

Maintenant que Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, a chassé les Amorrhéens devant son peuple d’Israël, toi tu chasserais celui-ci !

So now Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?

Ce dont ton Dieu Chamos t’a mis en possession, ne le possèdes-tu pas ? Et tout ce que Yahweh, notre Dieu, a mis devant nous en notre possession, nous ne le posséderions pas !

Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

Vaudrais-tu donc mieux que Balac, fils de Séphor, roi de Moab ? A-t-il contesté avec Israël, ou lui a-t-il fait la guerre ?

And now art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

Voilà trois cents ans qu’Israël habite à Hésebon et dans les villes de sa dépendance, à Aroër et dans les villes de sa dépendance, ainsi que dans toutes les villes qui sont sur les bords de l’Arnon ; pourquoi ne les lui avez-vous pas enlevées pendant ce temps-là ?

While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?

Moi, je n’ai pas péché contre toi ; mais toi, tu agis mal envers moi en me faisant la guerre. Que Yahweh, le Juge suprême, juge aujourd’hui entre les enfants d’Israël et les fils d’Ammon. »

I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

Le roi des fils d’Ammon, n’écouta pas les paroles que Jephté lui avait envoyé dire. 4. Chap. xi, 29-40 : Vœu de Jephté, sa victoire. — Jephté va à la rencontre de l’ennemi (xi, 29), son vœu (xi, 30, 31). La victoire (xi, 32, 33). Retour de Jephté, sa fille vient à sa rencontre (xi, 34) ; elle accepte les conséquences du vœu (xi, 35, 36), demandant seulement d’aller dans les montagnes pleurer sa virginité (xi, 37, 38). Exécution du vœu (xi, 39, 40).

Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

L’Esprit de Yahweh fut sur Jephté. Il traversa Galaad et Manassé, et passa jusqu’à Maspha de Galaad ; et de Maspha de Galaad il marcha contre les fils d’Ammon.

Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

Jephté fit un vœu à Yahweh, en disant :

And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

« Si vous livrez entre mes mains les fils d’Ammon, celui qui sortira des portes de ma maison à ma rencontre, quand je reviendrai heureusement de chez les fils d’Ammon, sera à Yahweh, et je l’offrirai en holocauste. »

then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah`s, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.

Jephté s’avança contre les fils d’Ammon, et Yahweh les livra entre ses mains.

So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand.

Il les battit depuis Aroër jusque vers Mennith, leur prenant vingt villes, et jusqu’à Abel-Keramin ; ce fut une très grande défaite. Et les fils d’Ammon furent abaissés devant les enfants d’Israël.

And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

Jephté remonta dans sa maison à Maspha ; et voici que sa fille sortit à sa rencontre avec des tambourins et des danses. C’était son unique enfant ; hors d’elle, il n’avait ni fils ni fille.

And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

Dès qu’il la vit, il déchira ses vêtements et dit : « Ah ! ma fille, tu me renverses et tu es parmi ceux qui me troublent. J’ai ouvert ma bouche à Yahweh, et je ne puis revenir en arrière. »

And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back.

Elle lui dit : « Mon père, tu as ouvert ta bouche à Yahweh ; fais-moi selon ce qui est sorti de ta bouche, puisque Yahweh t’a vengé de tes ennemis, les fils d’Ammon. »

And she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon.

Et elle dit à son père : « Que cette grâce seulement me soit accordée ; laisse-moi libre pendant deux mois ; je m’en irai, je descendrai pour aller sur les montagnes, et je pleurerai ma virginité avec mes compagnes. »

And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.

Il répondit : « Va, » et il la laissa aller pour deux mois. Elle s’en alla, elle et ses compagnes, et elle pleura sa virginité sur les montagnes.

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

Les deux mois écoulés, elle revint vers son père, et il accomplit à son égard le vœu qu’il avait fait ; et elle n’avait pas connu d’homme. De là vint cette coutume en Israël :

And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel,

chaque année les filles d’Israël vont célébrer la fille de Jephté, le Galaadite, quatre jours par an.

that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

Chapitre 12

Les hommes d’Éphraïm, s’étant rassemblés, passèrent vers Saphon et dirent à Jephté : « Pourquoi es-tu allé combattre les fils d’Ammon, sans nous avoir appelés à marcher avec toi ? Nous allons brûler sur toi ta maison. »

And the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward; and they said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thy house upon thee with fire.

Jephté leur répondit : « J’étais, moi et mon peuple, en grande contestation avec les fils d’Ammon ; alors je vous ai appelés, mais vous ne m’avez pas délivré de leurs mains.

And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye saved me not out of their hand.

Voyant que tu ne venais pas à mon secours, j’ai risqué ma vie et j’ai marché contre les fils d’Ammon ; et Yahweh les a livrés entre mes mains. Pourquoi donc êtes-vous montés aujourd’hui vers moi, pour me faire la guerre ? »

And when I saw that ye saved me not, I put my life in my hand, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and Jehovah delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?

Jephté rassembla tous les hommes de Galaad, et livra bataille à Éphraïm. Les hommes de Galaad battirent ceux d’Éphraïm, car ceux-ci avaient dit : « Vous n’êtes, ô Galaadites, que des fugitifs d’Éphraïm, au milieu d’Éphraïm et de Manassé ! »

Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye are fugitives of Ephraim, ye Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim, [and] in the midst of Manasseh.

Galaad s’empara des gués du Jourdain du côté d’Éphraïm, et quand l’un des fuyards d’Éphraïm disait : « Laissez-moi passer, » les hommes de Galaad lui demandaient : « Es-tu Éphraïmite ? » Il répondait : « Non ».

And the Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And it was so, that, when [any of] the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me go over, the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay;

Ils lui disaient alors : « Eh bien, dis : Schibboleth. » Et il disait : « Sibboleth, » ne réussissant pas à bien prononcer. Ils le saisissaient alors et l’égorgeaient près des gués du Jourdain. Il périt en ce temps-là quarante-deux mille hommes d’Éphraïm.

then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth; and he said Sibboleth; for he could not frame to pronounce it right: then they laid hold on him, and slew him at the fords of the Jordan. And there fell at that time of Ephraim forty and two thousand.

Jephté jugea Israël pendant six ans ; puis Jephté le Galaadite mourut et fut enterré dans l’une des villes de Galaad. 6. Chap. xii, 8-15 : Trois « petits juges ». — Abesan (xii, 8-10). Ahialon (xii, 11, 12). Abdon (xii, 13-15).

And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in [one of] the cities of Gilead.

Après lui, Abesan, de Bethléem, fut juge en Israël.

And after him Ibzan of Beth-lehem judged Israel.

Il eut trente fils ; il maria trente filles hors de sa maison, et il fit venir du dehors trente filles pour ses fils. Il fut juge en Israël pendant sept ans ;

And he had thirty sons; and thirty daughters he sent abroad, and thirty daughters he brought in from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.

ensuite Abesan mourant et fut enterré à Bethléem.

And Ibzan died, and was buried at Beth-lehem.

Après lui, Ahialon, de Zabulon, fut juge en Israël ; il fut juge en Israël pendant dix ans ;

And after him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.

puis Ahialon, de Zabulon, mourut et fut enterré à Ajalon, dans le pays de Zabulon.

And Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

Après lui, Abdon, fils d’Illel, de Pharathon fut juge en Israël.

And after him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.

Il eut quarante fils et trente petits-fils, qui montaient sur soixante-dix ânons. Il fut juge en Israël pendant huit ans ;

And he had forty sons and thirty sons` sons, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years.

puis Abdon, fils d’Illel, de Pharathon, mourut et fut enterré à Pharathon, dans le pays d’Éphraïm, sur la montagne des Amalécites.

And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill-country of the Amalekites.

Chapitre 13

Les enfants d’Israël firent encore ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh, et Yahweh les livra entre les mains des Philistins, pendant quarante ans.

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

Il y avait un homme de Saraa, de la famille des Danites, nommé Manué ; sa femme était stérile, et n’avait pas enfanté.

And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not.

L’Ange de Yahweh apparut à la femme et lui dit : « Voici donc, tu es stérile et sans enfant ; mais tu concevras et enfanteras un fils.

And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not; but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.

Et maintenant, prends bien garde, ne bois ni vin ni liqueur forte et ne mange rien d’impur,

Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing:

car tu vas concevoir et enfanter un fils. Le rasoir ne passera point sur sa tête, car cet enfant sera nazaréen de Dieu, dès le sein de sa mère, et c’est lui qui commencera à délivrer Israël de la main des Philistins. »

for, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

La femme alla dire à son mari : « Un homme de Dieu est venu vers moi ; il avait l’aspect d’un ange de Dieu, un aspect redoutable. Je ne lui ai pas demandé d’où il était, et il ne m’a pas fait connaître son nom ;

Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel of God, very terrible; and I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:

mais il m’a dit : « Tu vas concevoir et enfanter un fils ; et maintenant, ne bois ni vin ni liqueur forte, et ne mange rien d’impur, parce que cet enfant sera nazaréen de Dieu dès le sein de sa mère, jusqu’au jour de sa mort. »

but he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb to the day of his death.

Alors Manué invoqua Yahweh et dit : « Je vous prie, Seigneur, que l’homme de Dieu que vous avez envoyé vienne encore vers nous, et qu’il nous enseigne ce que nous devons faire pour l’enfant qui naîtra ! »

Then Manoah entreated Jehovah, and said, Oh, Lord, I pray thee, let the man of God whom thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.

Dieu exauça la prière de Manué, et l’Ange de Dieu vint encore vers la femme ; elle était assise dans un champ, et Manué, son mari, n’était pas avec elle.

And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her.

La femme courut aussitôt informer son mari et lui dit : « Voici, l’homme qui est venu l’autre jour vers moi m’est apparu. »

And the woman made haste, and ran, and told her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the [other] day.

Manué se leva et, suivant sa femme, il alla vers l’homme et lui dit : « Est-ce toi qui as parlé à cette femme ? » Il répondit : « C’est moi. »

And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am.

Manué dit : « Maintenant, quand ta parole s’accomplira, que faudra-t-il observer à l’égard de cet enfant, et qu’y aura-t-il à faire pour lui ? »

And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass: what shall be the ordering of the child, and [how] shall we do unto him?

L’Ange de Yahweh répondit à Manué : « La femme s’abstiendra de tout ce que je lui ai dit :

And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware.

elle ne mangera rien de ce qui provient de la vigne, elle ne boira ni vin ni liqueur forte, et elle ne mangera rien d’impur : tout ce que je lui ai prescrit, elle l’observera. »

She may not eat of anything that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe.

Manué dit à l’Ange de Yahweh : « Permets que nous te retenions et que nous t’apprêtions un chevreau. »

And Manoah said unto the angel of Jehovah, I pray thee, let us detain thee, that we may make ready a kid for thee.

L’Ange de Yahweh répondit à Manué : « Quand tu me retiendrais, je ne mangerais pas de ton mets ; mais si tu veux préparer un holocauste, à Yahweh, offre-le. » — Manué ne savait pas que c’était l’Ange de Yahweh —

And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wilt make ready a burnt-offering, thou must offer it unto Jehovah. For Manoah knew not that he was the angel of Jehovah.

Et Manué dit à l’Ange de Yahweh : « Quel est ton nom, afin que nous t’honorions, quand ta parole s’accomplira ? »

And Manoah said unto the angel of Jehovah, What is thy name, that, when thy words come to pass, we may do thee honor?

L’Ange de Yahweh lui répondit : « Pourquoi m’interroges-tu sur mon nom ? Il est Merveilleux. »

And the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore askest thou after my name, seeing it is wonderful?

Manué prit le chevreau avec l’oblation et l’offrit à Yahweh sur le rocher, et Yahweh fit un prodige pendant que Manué et sa femme regardaient.

So Manoah took the kid with the meal-offering, and offered it upon the rock unto Jehovah: and [the angel] did wondrously, and Manoah and his wife looked on.

Comme la flamme montait de dessus l’autel vers le ciel, l’Ange de Yahweh monta dans la flamme de l’autel. À cette vue, Manué et sa femme tombèrent la face contre terre.

For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of Jehovah ascended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground.

Et l’Ange de Yahweh n’apparut plus à Manué et à sa femme. Alors Manué comprit que c’était l’Ange de Yahweh.

But the angel of Jehovah did no more appear to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of Jehovah.

Et Manué dit à sa femme : « Nous allons mourir, car nous avons vu Dieu. »

And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.

Sa femme lui répondit : « Si Yahweh voulait nous faire mourir, il n’aurait pas reçu de nos mains l’holocauste et l’oblation, il ne nous aurait pas fait voir tout cela, il ne nous aurait pas fait entendre aujourd’hui de pareilles choses. »

But his wife said unto him, If Jehovah were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meal-offering at our hand, neither would he have showed us all these things, nor would at this time have told such things as these.

La femme enfanta un fils et lui donna le nom de Samson. L’enfant grandit et Yahweh le bénit ;

And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and Jehovah blessed him.

l’esprit de Yahweh commença à le pousser à Machanêh-Dan, entre Saraa et Esthaol.

And the Spirit of Jehovah began to move him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

Chapitre 14

Samson descendit à Thamna, et il vit à Thamna une femme d’entre les filles des Philistins.

And Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines.

Lorsqu’il fut remonté, il le déclara à son père et à sa mère, en disant : « J’ai vu à Thamna une femme d’entre les filles des Philistins ; prenez-la maintenant pour être ma femme. »

And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.

Son père et sa mère lui dirent : « N’y a-t-il point de femme parmi les filles de tes frères et dans tout notre peuple, que tu ailles prendre une femme chez les Philistins, qui sont incirconcis ? » Et Samson dit à son père : « Prends celle-là pour moi, car elle me plaît. »

Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.

Son père et sa mère ne savaient pas que cela venait de Yahweh ; car il cherchait une occasion de querelle venant des Philistins. — En ce temps-là les Philistins dominaient sur Israël.

But his father and his mother knew not that it was of Jehovah; for he sought an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines had rule over Israel.

Samson descendit avec son père et sa mère à Thamna. Lorsqu’ils arrivèrent aux vignes de Thamna, voici qu’un jeune lion rugissant vint à sa rencontre.

Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnah, and came to the vineyards of Timnah: and, behold, a young lion roared against him.

L’Esprit de Yahweh saisit Samson ; et, sans avoir rien à la main, Samson déchira le lion comme on déchire un chevreau. Et il ne raconta pas à son père et à sa mère ce qu’il avait fait.

And the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid; and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

Il descendit et parla à la femme, et elle lui plut.

And he went down, and talked with the woman, and she pleased Samson well.

Quelque temps après, s’étant rendu de nouveau à Thamna pour la prendre, il fit un détour pour voir le cadavre du lion, et voici qu’il y avait un essaim d’abeilles et du miel dans le corps du lion.

And after a while he returned to take her; and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey.

Il en prit dans ses mains et en mangea chemin faisant ; et lorsqu’il fut arrivé près de son père et de sa mère, il leur en donna et ils en mangèrent ; mais il ne leur dit pas qu’il avait pris le miel dans le corps du lion.

And he took it into his hands, and went on, eating as he went; and he came to his father and mother, and gave unto them, and they did eat: but he told them not that he had taken the honey out of the body of the lion.

Le père de Samson descendit chez la femme ; et là, Samson donna un festin, car c’était la coutume des jeunes gens.

And his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.

Dès qu’on le vit, on invita trente compagnons pour être avec lui.

And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.

Samson leur dit : « Je vais vous proposer une énigme. Si vous me l’expliquez pendant les sept jours du festin et si vous la devinez, je vous donnerai trente tuniques et trente vêtements de rechange ;

And Samson said unto them, Let me now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can declare it unto me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of raiment;

mais si vous me pouvez pas me l’expliquer, c’est vous qui me donnerez trente tuniques et trente vêtements de rechange. » Ils lui dirent : « Propose ton énigme, que nous l’entendions. »

but if ye cannot declare it unto me, then shall ye give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of raiment. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.

Il leur dit : « De celui qui mange est sorti ce qui se mange, du fort est sorti le doux. » Pendant trois jours, ils ne purent expliquer l’énigme.

And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth food, And out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days declare the riddle.

Le septième jour, ils dirent à la femme de Samson : « Persuade à ton mari de nous expliquer l’énigme ; sinon, nous te brûlerons, toi et la maison de ton père. C’est pour nous dépouiller que vous nous avez invités, sans doute ? »

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson`s wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father`s house with fire: have ye called us to impoverish us? is it not [so]?

La femme de Samson pleurait auprès de lui et disait : « Tu n’as pour moi que de la haine, et tu me m’aimes pas. Tu as proposé une énigme aux fils de mon peuple, et tu ne me l’as pas expliquée ! » Il lui répondit : « Je ne l’ai expliquée ni à mon père ni à ma mère, et je te l’expliquerais ! »

And Samson`s wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell thee?

Elle pleura ainsi devant lui pendant les sept jours que dura le festin ; le septième jour, comme elle le tourmentait, il lui expliqua l’énigme, et elle l’expliqua aux enfants de son peuple.

And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she pressed him sore; and she told the riddle to the children of her people.

Les gens de la ville dirent à Samson, le septième jour, avant le coucher du soleil : « Quoi de plus doux que le miel, et quoi de plus fort que le lion ? » Et il leur dit : « Si vous n’aviez pas labouré avec ma génisse, vous n’auriez pas deviné mon énigme. »

And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, Ye had not found out my riddle.

L’Esprit de Yahweh le saisit, et il descendit à Ascalon. Il y tua trente hommes et, ayant pris leurs dépouilles, il donna les vêtements de rechange à ceux qui avaient expliqué l’énigme. Puis, enflammé de colère, il monta à la maison de son père. 3. And the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and smote thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave the changes [of raiment] unto them that declared the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father`s house.

La femme de Samson fut donnée à l’un de ses compagnons qu’il s’était choisi pour ami.

But Samson`s wife was [given] to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.

Chapitre 15

Quelque temps après, à l’époque de la moisson des blés, Samson alla voir sa femme, en apportant un chevreau. Il dit : « Je veux entrer auprès de ma femme dans sa chambre. » Mais son père ne lui accorda pas l’entrée ;

But it came to pass after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.

et son père dit : « J’ai pensé que tu avais pour elle de la haine, et je l’ai donnée à ton ami. Est-ce que sa jeune sœur n’est pas plus belle qu’elle ? Qu’elle soit ta femme à sa place. »

And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.

Samson leur dit : « Cette fois je serai innocent envers les Philistins, si je leur fais du mal. »

And Samson said unto them, This time shall I be blameless in regard of the Philistines, when I do them a mischief.

Et Samson s’en alla. Il attrapa trois cents renards et, ayant pris des torches, il tourna les renards queue contre queue, et mit une torche entre les deux queues, au milieu.

And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between every two tails.

Il alluma ensuite les torches et lâcha les renards dans les moissons des Philistins ; il embrasa depuis les tas de gerbes jusqu’aux blés sur pied et aux plantations d’oliviers.

And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks and the standing grain, and also the oliveyards.

Les Philistins dirent : « Qui a fait cela ? » On répondit : « C’est Samson, le gendre du Thamnéen, parce que celui-ci lui a pris sa femme et l’a donnée à son ami. » Et les Philistins étant montés, ils la brûlèrent, elle et son père.

Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they said, Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he hath taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.

Samson leur dit : « C’est ainsi que vous agissez ! Eh bien, je ne cesserai qu’après m’être vengé de vous. »

And Samson said unto them, If ye do after this manner, surely I will be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.

Et il les battit rudement, cuisse et hanche ; il descendit ensuite et demeura dans la caverne du rocher d’Etam.

And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the cleft of the rock of Etam.

Alors les Philistins montèrent et campèrent en Juda, se répandant en Léchi.

Then the Philistines went up, and encamped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.

Les hommes de Juda dirent : « Pourquoi êtes-vous tournés contre nous ? » Ils répondirent : « Nous sommes montés pour lier Samson, afin de le traiter comme il nous a traités. »

And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they said, To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.

Trois mille hommes de Juda descendirent à la caverne du rocher d’Etam, et dirent à Samson : « Ne sais-tu pas que les Philistins sont nos maîtres ? Qu’est-ce que tu nous as fait là ? » Il leur répondit : « Je les ai traités comme ils m’ont traité. »

Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what then is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

Ils lui dirent : « Nous sommes descendus pour te lier, afin de te livrer entre les mains des Philistins. » Samson leur dit : « Jurez-moi que vous ne voulez pas me tuer. »

And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.

Ils lui répondirent en disant : « Non ; nous voulons seulement te lier et te livrer entre leurs mains, mais nous ne te ferons pas mourir. » Et l’ayant lié de deux cordes neuves, ils le firent monter du rocher.

And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock.

Lorsqu’il arriva à Léchi, les Philistins poussèrent à sa rencontre des cris de joie. Alors l’Esprit de Yahweh le saisit, et les cordes qu’il avait aux bras devinrent comme des fils de lin brûlés par le feu, et ses liens tombèrent de ses mains.

When he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and the ropes that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands dropped from off his hands.

Trouvant une mâchoire d’âne fraîche, il étendit la main, la saisit et en frappa mille hommes.

And he found a fresh jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and smote a thousand men therewith.

Et Samson dit : « Avec une mâchoire d’âne, je les ai bien asinés (rossés), avec une mâchoire d’âne, j’ai frappé mille hommes. »

And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, With the jawbone of an ass have I smitten a thousand men.

Quand il eut achevé de parler, il jeta de sa main la mâchoire, et nomma ce lieu Ramath-Léchi.

And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramath-lehi.

Dévoré par la soif, il invoqua Yahweh, et dit : « C’est vous qui avez accordé par la main de votre serviteur cette grande délivrance ; et maintenant, faut-il que je meure de soif et que je tombe entre les mains des incirconcis ? »

And he was sore athirst, and called on Jehovah, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance by the hand of thy servant; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised.

Et Dieu fendit le rocher creux qui est à Léchi, et il en sortit de l’eau. Samson but, son esprit se ranima et il reprit vie. C’est pourquoi on a appelé cette source En-Hakkoré ; elle existe à Léchi, jusqu’à ce jour.

But God clave the hollow place that is in Lehi, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore the name thereof was called En-hakkore, which is in Lehi, unto this day.

Samson jugea Israël, au temps des Philistins, pendant vingt ans.

And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

Chapitre 16

Samson alla à Gaza ; il y vit une courtisane, et il entra chez elle.

And Samson went to Gaza, and saw there a harlot, and went in unto her.

On l’annonça aux gens de Gaza, en disant : « Samson est venu ici. » Et ils l’environnèrent et se tinrent en embuscade toute la nuit à la porte de la ville. Ils se tinrent tranquilles toute la nuit, en disant : « Attendons jusqu’à ce que luise le matin, et nous le tuerons. »

[And it was told] the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, [Let be] till morning light, then we will kill him.

Samson demeura couché jusqu’à minuit ; à minuit, il se leva et, saisissant les battants de la porte de la ville et les deux poteaux, il les arracha avec la barre, les mit sur ses épaules et les porta sur le sommet de la montagne qui regarde Hébron. 4. Chap. xvi, 4-31 : Samson et Dalila. — Samson s’attache à Dalila (xvi, 4). Les princes des Philistins gagnent Dalila pour qu’elle obtienne de Samson le secret de sa force (xvi, 5). Trois tentatives déjouées par Samson (xvi, 6-9 ; 10-12 ; 13, 14). Quatrième tentative couronnée de succès (xvi, 15-18) ; elle fait raser la tête de Samson et le livre aux Philistins qui lui crèvent les yeux (xvi, 19-21). And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and laid hold of the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and plucked them up, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron.

Après cela, il aima une femme dans la vallée de Sorec ; elle se nommait Dalila.

And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.

Les princes des Philistins montèrent vers elle et lui dirent : « Flatte-le et vois où gît sa grande force, et comment nous pourrons nous rendre maîtres de lui, afin de le lier et de le dompter, et nous te donnerons chacun mille et cent sicles d’argent. »

And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred [pieces] of silver.

Dalila dit à Samson : « Dis-moi, je te prie, ou gît ta grande force, et avec quoi il faudrait te lier pour te dompter ? »

And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.

Samson lui dit : « Si l’on me liait avec sept cordes fraîches, qui ne seraient pas encore sèches, je deviendrais faible et je serais comme un autre homme. »

And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withes that were never dried, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.

Les princes des Philistins apportèrent à Dalila sept cordes fraîches, qui n’étaient pas encore sèches ; et elle le lia avec ces cordes.

Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withes which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.

— Or elle avait des gens en embuscade dans la chambre. — Elle lui dit : « Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! » Et il rompit les cordes, comme se rompt un cordon d’étoupe quand il sent le feu ; et l’on ne connut pas le secret de sa force.

Now she had liers-in-wait abiding in the inner chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withes, as a string of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.

Dalila dit à Samson : « Voici, tu t’es joué de moi et tu m’as dit des mensonges. Maintenant, je te prie, indique-moi avec quoi il faut te lier. »

And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.

Il lui dit : « Si on me liait avec des cordes neuves, n’ayant servi à aucun usage, je deviendrais faible et je serais comme un autre homme. »

And he said unto her, If they only bind me with new ropes wherewith no work hath been done, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.

Dalila prit des cordes neuves, avec lesquelles elle le lia. Et elle lui dit : « Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! » — Or des gens se tenaient en embuscade dans la chambre. — Et il rompit comme un fil les cordes qu’il avait aux bras.

So Delilah took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And the liers-in-wait were abiding in the inner chamber. And he brake them off his arms like a thread.

Dalila dit à Samson : « Jusqu’à présent tu t’es joué de moi, et tu m’as dit des mensonges. Indique-moi avec quoi il faut te lier. » Il lui dit : « Tu n’as qu’à tisser les sept tresses de ma tête avec le tissu. »

And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.

Et elle les fixa avec la cheville. Puis elle lui dit : « Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! » Et, se réveillant de son sommeil, il arracha la cheville du métier et le tissu.

And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and plucked away the pin of the beam, and the web.

Elle lui dit : « Comment peux-tu dire : je t’aime ! puisque ton cœur n’est pas avec moi ? Voilà trois fois que tu t’es joué de moi, et que tu ne m’as pas indiqué où gît ta grande force. »

And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.

Elle le tourmentait ainsi chaque jour et le fatiguait de ses instances ; à la fin, son âme s’impatienta jusqu’à en mourir ;

And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was vexed unto death.

il lui ouvrit tout son cœur et lui dit : « Le rasoir n’a jamais passé sur ma tête, car je suis nazaréen de Dieu dès le sein de ma mère. Si j’étais rasé, ma force m’abandonnerait, je deviendrais faible et je serais comme tous les autres hommes. »

And he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite unto God from my mother`s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

Dalila vit qu’il lui avait ouvert tout son cœur ; elle envoya appeler les princes des Philistins et leur fit dire : « Montez cette fois, car il m’a ouvert tout son cœur. » Et les princes des Philistins montèrent vers elle. apportant l’argent dans leurs mains.

And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath told me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought the money in their hand.

Elle l’endormit sur ses genoux et, ayant appelé l’homme, elle fit raser les sept tresses de la tête de Samson et commença à le dompter, et sa force se retira de lui.

And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.

Elle dit alors : « Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! » Il se réveilla de son sommeil et dit : « Je me tirerai d’affaire comme les autres fois, et je me dégagerai ; » car il ne savait pas que Yahweh s’était retiré de lui.

And she said, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times, and shake myself free. But he knew not that Jehovah was departed from him.

Les Philistins le saisirent et lui crevèrent les yeux et, l’ayant fait descendre à Gaza, ils le lièrent d’une double chaîne d’airain. Il tournait la meule dans la prison.

And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house.

Cependant les cheveux de sa tête commençaient à repousser depuis qu’il avait été rasé.

Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.

Les princes des Philistins s’assemblèrent pour offrir un grand sacrifice à Dagon, leur dieu, et pour se réjouir. Ils disaient : « Notre dieu a livré entre nos mains Samson, notre ennemi. »

And the lords of the Philistines gathered them together to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.

Le peuple le vit, et ils louèrent leur dieu, car ils disaient : « Notre dieu a livré entre nos mains notre ennemi, celui qui ravageait notre pays, et qui nous tuait tant de gens. »

And when the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hand our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, who hath slain many of us.

Quand leurs cœurs furent devenus joyeux, ils dirent : « Qu’on fasse venir Samson, et qu’il nous divertisse ! » Ils tirèrent Samson de la prison, et il dansa devant eux. On l’avait placé entre les colonnes.

And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison-house; and he made sport before them. And they set him between the pillars:

Samson dit au jeune homme qui le tenait par la main : « Laisse-moi toucher les colonnes sur lesquelles se tient la maison et m’y appuyer.

and Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house resteth, that I may lean upon them.

Or la maison était remplie d’hommes et de femmes ; tous les princes des Philistins étaient là, et il y avait sur le toit environ trois mille personnes, hommes et femmes, qui regardaient Samson danser.

Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.

Alors Samson invoqua Yahweh et dit : « Seigneur Yahweh, souvenez-vous de moi, je vous prie, et donnez-moi de la force cette fois seulement, ô Dieu, afin que d’un seul coup je me venge des Philistins pour mes deux yeux. »

And Samson called unto Jehovah, and said, O Lord Jehovah, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.

Et Samson, embrassant les deux colonnes du milieu sur lesquelles se tenait la maison, s’appuya sur elles, sur l’une de la main droite, sur l’autre de la main gauche.

And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house rested, and leaned upon them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left.

Et Samson dit : « Que je meure avec les Philistins ! ». Et il se pencha avec force, et la maison s’écroula sur les princes et sur tout le peuple qui s’y trouvait. Ceux qu’il fit périr en mourant furent plus nombreux que ceux qu’il avait tués pendant sa vie.

And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead that he slew at his death were more than they that he slew in his life.

Ses frères et toute la maison de son père descendirent à Gaza et l’emportèrent. Lorsqu’ils furent remontés, ils l’enterrèrent entre Saraa et Esthaol, dans le sépulcre de Manué, son père. Il avait jugé Israël pendant vingt ans.

Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burying-place of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.

Chapitre 17

Il y avait un homme de la montagne d’Ephraïm, nommé Michas.

And there was a man of the hill-country of Ephraim, whose name was Micah.

Il dit à sa mère : « Les mille et cent sicles d’argent qu’on t’a pris, et au sujet desquels tu as prononcé une malédiction, — et tu l’as même prononcée à mes oreilles, — voici, cet argent est entre mes mains, c’est moi qui l’ai pris. » Et sa mère dit : « Que mon fils soit béni de Yahweh ! »

And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred [pieces] of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou didst utter a curse, and didst also speak it in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be my son of Jehovah.

Il rendit à sa mère les mille et cent sicles d’argent ; et sa mère dit : « Je consacre de ma main cet argent à Yahweh pour mon fils, afin d’en faire une image taillée et un objet en fonte ; et maintenant je te le rends. »

And he restored the eleven hundred [pieces] of silver to his mother; and his mother said, I verily dedicate the silver unto Jehovah from my hand for my son, to make a graven image and a molten image: now therefore I will restore it unto thee.

Lorsqu’il eut rendu l’argent à sa mère, sa mère prit deux cents sicles et les donna au fondeur, qui en fit une image taillée et un objet en fonte ; et ils furent dans la maison de Michas.

And when he restored the money unto his mother, his mother took two hundred [pieces] of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a graven image and a molten image: and it was in the house of Micah.

Car ce Michas avait une maison de Dieu ; il fit un éphod et des théraphim, et il consacra un de ses fils, qui lui servit de prêtre.

And the man Micah had a house of gods, and he made an ephod, and teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

En ce temps-là, il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël ; chacun faisait ce qui était bon à ses yeux.

In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

Il y avait un jeune homme de Bethléem de Juda, de la famille de Juda ; il était Lévite et séjournait dans cette ville.

And there was a young man out of Beth-lehem-judah, of the family of Judah, who was a Levite; and he sojourned there.

Cet homme partit de la ville de Bethléem de Juda, pour trouver un lieu de séjour. Il arriva ainsi dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, jusqu’à la maison de Michas.

And the man departed out of the city, out of Beth-lehem-judah, to sojourn where he could find [a place], and he came to the hill-country of Ephraim to the house of Micah, as he journeyed.

Michas lui dit : « D’où viens-tu ? » Il lui répondit : « Je suis Lévite, de Bethléem de Juda, et je voyage pour trouver un lieu de séjour. »

And Micah said unto him, Whence comest thou? And he said unto him, I am a Levite of Beth-lehem-judah, and I go to sojourn where I may find [a place].

Michas lui dit : « Reste avec moi ; sois pour moi un père et un prêtre, et je te donnerai dix sicles d’argent par an, une provision de vêtements et la nourriture. » Et le Lévite entra.

And Micah said unto him, Dwell with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee ten [pieces] of silver by the year, and a suit of apparel, and thy victuals. So the Levite went in.

Le Lévite consentit à demeurer chez cet homme, et le jeune homme fut pour lui comme l’un de ses fils.

And the Levite was content to dwell with the man; and the young man was unto him as one of his sons.

Michas installa le Lévite, et le jeune homme lui servit de prêtre et demeura dans la maison de Michas.

And Micah consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah.

Et Michas dit : « Je sais maintenant que Yahweh me fera du bien, puisque j’ai ce Lévite pour prêtre. »

Then said Micah, Now know I that Jehovah will do me good, seeing I have a Levite to my priest.

Chapitre 18

En ce temps-là, il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël ; en ce temps-là la tribu des Danites se cherchait une possession pour s’établir, car jusqu’à ce jour il ne lui était pas échu d’héritage au milieu des tribus d’Israël.

In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day [their] inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

Les fils de Dan, ayant pris d’entre eux tous cinq hommes de leur famille, hommes vaillants, les envoyèrent de Saraa et d’Esthaol pour explorer le pays et le reconnaître. Ils leur dirent : « Allez, reconnaissez le pays. » Les cinq hommes arrivèrent dans la montagne d’Éphraïm jusqu’à la maison de Michas, et ils y passèrent la nuit.

And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their whole number, men of valor, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land. And they came to the hill-country of Ephraim, unto the house of Micah, and lodged there.

Comme ils étaient près de la maison de Michas, reconnaissant la voix du jeune Lévite, ils s’approchèrent et lui dirent : « Qui t’a amené ici ? Que fais-tu dans ce lieu et qu’as-tu ici ? »

When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite; and they turned aside thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what doest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

Il leur répondit : « Michas a fait pour moi telle et telle chose, il me donne un salaire, et je lui sers de prêtre. »

And he said unto them, Thus and thus hath Micah dealt with me, and he hath hired me, and I am become his priest.

Ils lui dirent : « Eh bien, consulte Dieu, afin que nous sachions si notre voyage aura du succès. »

And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.

Et le prêtre leur répondit : « Allez en paix ; le voyage que vous faites est sous le regard de Yahweh. »

And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before Jehovah is your way wherein ye go.

S’étant mis en route, les cinq hommes arrivèrent à Laïs. Ils virent le peuple qui était dans cette ville, vivant en sécurité à la manière des Sidoniens, paisible et tranquille, et il n’y avait personne dans le pays qui, investi de l’autorité, les molestât en aucune manière ; ils étaient éloignés des Sidoniens, et n’avaient affaire avec personne.

Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and secure; for there was none in the land, possessing authority, that might put [them] to shame in anything, and they were far from the Sidonians, and had no dealings with any man.

Ils revinrent vers leurs frères à Saraa et Esthaol, et leurs frères leur dirent : « Que dites-vous ? »

And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What [say] ye?

Ils répondirent : « Debout, et montons contre eux ; car nous avons vu le pays et voici, qu’il est très bon. Et vous restez là sans mot dire ? Ne soyez point paresseux à vous mettre en marche pour aller prendre possession de ce pays.

And they said, Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go and to enter in to possess the land.

En y entrant, vous arriverez chez un peuple en sécurité. Le pays est vaste, et Dieu l’a livré entre vos mains ; c’est un lieu où rien ne manque de tout ce qu’il y a sur la terre. » 3. When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and the land is large; for God hath given it into your hand, a place where there is no want of anything that is in the earth.

Six cents hommes de la famille de Dan partirent de Saraa et d’Esthaol, munis de leurs armes de guerre.

And there set forth from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men girt with weapons of war.

Ils montèrent et campèrent à Cariathiarim en Juda ; c’est pourquoi ce lieu a été appelé jusqu’à ce jour Machanêh-Dan; voici qu’il est à l’occident de Cariathiarim.

And they went up, and encamped in Kiriath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan, unto this day; behold, it is behind Kiriath-jearim.

Ils passèrent de là dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, et ils arrivèrent jusqu’à la maison de Michas.

And they passed thence unto the hill-country of Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

Les cinq hommes qui avaient été explorer le pays de Laïs prirent la parole et dirent à leurs frères : « Savez-vous qu’il y a dans ces maisons un éphod, des théraphim, une image taillée et un objet en fonte ? Voyez maintenant ce que vous avez à faire. »

Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.

Ils se dirigèrent de ce côte-là et, entrant dans la maison du jeune Lévite, la maison de Michas, ils lui demandèrent comment il se portait.

And they turned aside thither, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and asked him of his welfare.

Les six cents hommes d’entre les fils de Dan, munis de leurs armes de guerre, se tenaient à l’entrée de la porte.

And the six hundred men girt with their weapons of war, who were of the children of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.

Et les cinq hommes qui avaient été explorer le pays montèrent et, étant entrés dans le sanctuaire, ils prirent l’image taillée, l’éphod, les théraphim et l’objet en fonte, pendant que le prêtre était à l’entrée de la porte avec les six cents hommes munis de leurs armes de guerre.

And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men girt with weapons of war.

Lorsqu’ils furent entrés dans la maison de Michas et qu’ils eurent pris l’image taillée, l’éphod, les théraphim et l’objet en fonte, le prêtre leur dit : « Que faites-vous ? »

And when these went into Micah`s house, and fetched the graven image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said unto them, What do ye?

Ils lui répondirent : « Tais-toi, mets ta main sur ta bouche et viens avec nous, et tu seras pour nous un père et un prêtre. Vaut-il mieux que tu sois prêtre pour la maison d’un seul homme, ou que tu sois prêtre pour une tribu et pour une famille en Israël ? »

And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thy hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be priest unto the house of one man, or to be priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

Le cœur du prêtre devint joyeux ; il prit l’éphod, les théraphim et l’image taillée, et il vint au milieu de la troupe.

And the priest`s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

Ils se remirent en route et partirent, ayant placé devant eux les enfants, le bétail et toutes les choses de prix.

So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the goods before them.

Ils étaient déjà loin de la maison de Michas, lorsque les gens qui habitaient les maisons voisines de la maison de Michas se rassemblèrent et poursuivirent les fils de Dan.

When they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah`s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

Ils crièrent après les fils de Dan, et ceux-ci, se retournant, dirent à Michas : « Que te faut-il, que tu aies attroupé ces hommes ? »

And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?

Il répondit : « Mes dieux que j’ai faits, vous les avez enlevés, avec le prêtre, et vous êtes partis : que me reste-t-il ? Comment donc pouvez-vous me dire : Que te faut-il ? »

And he said, ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and are gone away, and what have I more? and how then say ye unto me, What aileth thee?

Les fils de Dan lui dirent : « Ne nous fais pas entendre ta voix, de peur que des hommes irrités se jettent sur vous et que tu perdes ta vie et celle des gens de ta maison. »

And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall upon you, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.

Et les fils de Dan continuèrent leur route. Voyant qu’ils étaient plus forts que lui, Michas s’en retourna et revint dans sa maison.

And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

C’est ainsi que les Danites enlevèrent ce qu’avait fait Michas, et le prêtre qui était à son service ; et ils marchèrent contre Laïs, contre un peuple tranquille et en sécurité ; ils le passèrent au fil de l’épée et brûlèrent la ville.

And they took that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people quiet and secure, and smote them with the edge of the sword; and they burnt the city with fire.

Il n’y eut personne pour la délivrer, car elle était éloignée de Sidon, et ses habitants n’avaient point affaire avec d’autres hommes : elle était dans la vallée qui s’étend vers Beth-Rohob. Les fils de Dan rebâtirent la ville et y habitèrent ;

And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built the city, and dwelt therein.

ils l’appelèrent Dan, d’après le nom de Dan, leur père, qui était né d’Israël ; mais la ville s’appelait primitivement Laïs.

And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

Les fils de Dan dressèrent pour eux l’image taillée, et Jonathan, fils de Gersam, fils de Moïse, lui et ses fils, furent prêtres de la tribu des Danites, jusqu’au jour de la captivité du pays.

And the children of Dan set up for themselves the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.

Ils dressèrent pour eux l’image taillée qu’avait faite Michas, pendant tout le temps que la maison de Dieu fut à Silo.

So they set them up Micah`s graven image which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

Chapitre 19

Dans ce temps, alors qu’il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël, un Lévite, qui séjournait à l’extrémité de la montagne d’Éphraïm, prit pour concubine une femme de Bethléem de Juda.

And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.

Sa concubine lui fut infidèle, et elle le quitta pour aller dans la maison de son père à Bethléem de Juda, où elle resta l’espace de quatre mois.

And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him unto her father`s house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there the space of four months.

Son mari se leva et alla vers elle, pour parler à son cœur et la ramener à lui ; il avait avec lui son serviteur et deux ânes. Elle le fit entrer dans la maison de son père ; et quand le père de la jeune femme le vit, il alla avec joie au-devant de lui.

And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly unto her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father`s house; and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

Son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, le retint, et il demeura chez lui trois jours ; ils mangèrent et burent, et ils y séjournèrent.

And his father-in-law, the damsel`s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.

Le quatrième jour, ils se levèrent de bon matin et le Lévite se disposait à partir. Mais le père de la jeune femme dit à son gendre : « Fortifie ton cœur en prenant un morceau de pain, et vous partirez ensuite. »

And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the damsel`s father said unto his son-in-law, Strengthen thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye shall go your way.

S’étant assis, ils mangèrent tous deux ensemble et burent. Puis le père de la jeune femme dit au mari : « Consens, je te prie, à passer la nuit, et que ton cœur se réjouisse. »

So they sat down, and did eat and drink, both of them together: and the damsel`s father said unto the man, Be pleased, I pray thee, to tarry all night, and let thy heart be merry.

Le mari se leva pour s’en aller ; mais, sur les instances de son beau-père, il revint et y passa encore la nuit.

And the man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.

Le cinquième jour, il se leva de bon matin pour partir. Alors le père de la jeune femme dit : « Fortifie ton cœur, je te prie, et diffère jusqu’au déclin du jour. » Et ils mangèrent tous deux.

And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel`s father said, Strengthen thy heart, I pray thee, and tarry ye until the day declineth; and they did eat, both of them.

Le mari se levait pour s’en aller, lui, sa concubine et son serviteur ; mais son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, lui dit : « Voici, le jour s’incline vers le soir ; je vous prie, passez donc ici la nuit ; voici que le jour baisse, passe ici la nuit, et que ton cœur se réjouisse ; demain vous vous lèverez de bon matin pour vous mettre en route, et tu t’en iras à ta tente. »

And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel`s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thy heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.

Le mari ne consentit pas à passer la nuit ; il se leva et partit. Il vint jusqu’en face de Jébus, qui est Jérusalem, ayant avec lui les deux ânes bâtés et sa concubine.

But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of asses saddled; his concubine also was with him.

Lorsqu’ils furent près de Jébus, le jour avait beaucoup baissé. Le serviteur dit alors à son maître : « Viens, je te prie, détournons-nous vers cette ville des Jébuséens, et nous y passerons la nuit. »

When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.

Son maître lui répondit : « Nous ne nous détournerons pas vers une ville étrangère, où il n’y a pas d’enfants d’Israël ; nous passerons jusqu’à Gabaa. »

And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.

il dit encore à son serviteur : « Allons, tâchons d’atteindre l’une de ces localités pour y passer la nuit, Gabaa ou Rama. »

And he said unto his servant, Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.

Ils continuèrent à marcher, et le soleil se coucha lorsqu’ils furent près de Gabaa, qui appartient à Benjamin.

So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them near to Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.

Ils se détournèrent de ce côté, pour aller passer la nuit à Gabaa. Le Lévite, étant entré, s’arrêta sur la place de la ville, et il n’y eut personne qui les reçut dans sa maison pour y passer la nuit.

And they turned aside thither, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.

Mais voici qu’un vieillard revenait le soir de travailler aux champs ; c’était un homme de la montagne d’Ephraïm, qui séjournait à Gabaa, et les gens du lieu étaient Benjamites.

And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even: now the man was of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.

Ayant levé les yeux, il vit le voyageur sur la place de la ville, et le vieillard dit : « Où vas-tu et d’où viens-tu ? »

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?

Il lui répondit : « Nous allons de Bethléem de Juda jusqu’à l’extrémité de la montagne d’Ephraïm, d’où je suis. J’étais allé à Bethléem de Juda, et maintenant je vais à la maison de Yahweh, et il n’y a personne qui me reçoive dans sa maison.

And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah unto the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim; from thence am I, and I went to Beth-lehem-judah: and I am [now] going to the house of Jehovah; and there is no man that taketh me into his house.

Nous avons cependant de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes, et aussi du pain et du vin pour moi, pour ta servante et pour le jeune homme qui est avec tes serviteurs ; nous ne manquons de rien. »

Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man that is with thy servants: there is no want of anything.

Le vieillard dit : « La paix soit avec toi ! Seulement je pourvoirai à tous tes besoins ; mais ne passe pas la nuit sur la place. »

And the old man said, Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.

Il le fit entrer dans sa maison, et il donna du fourrage aux ânes ; les voyageurs se lavèrent les pieds, puis ils mangèrent et burent.

So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder; and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

Pendant qu’ils réjouissaient leur cœur, voici, que des hommes de la ville, gens pervers, entourèrent la maison et, frappant avec force à la porte, ils dirent au vieillard, maître de la maison : « Fais sortir l’homme qui est entré chez toi, afin que nous le connaissions. »

As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, beset the house round about, beating at the door; and they spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thy house, that we may know him.

Le maître de la maison sortit vers eux et leur dit : « Non, mes frères, ne faites pas le mal, je vous prie ; puisque cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne commettez pas cette infamie.

And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this folly.

Voici ma fille qui est vierge, et sa concubine ; je vous les amènerai dehors, vous leur ferez violence et vous les traiterez comme il vous plaira ; mais ne commettez pas sur cet homme une action aussi infâme. »

Behold, here is my daughter a virgin, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not any such folly.

Ces hommes ne voulurent pas l’écouter. Alors l’homme prit sa concubine et la leur amena dehors. Ils la connurent et ils abusèrent d’elle toute la nuit jusqu’au matin, et ils la renvoyèrent au lever de l’aurore.

But the men would not hearken to him: so the man laid hold on his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

Vers le matin, cette femme vint tomber à l’entrée de la maison de l’homme chez qui était son mari, et elle resta là jusqu’au jour.

Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man`s house where her lord was, till it was light.

Son mari se leva le matin et, ayant ouvert la porte de la maison, il sortit pour continuer sa route. Et voici que la femme, sa concubine, était étendue à l’entrée de la maison, les mains sur le seuil.

And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands upon the threshold.

Il lui dit : « Lève-toi et allons-nous-en. » Et personne ne répondit. Alors le mari la mit sur son âne et partit pour aller dans sa demeure.

And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going; but none answered: then he took her up upon the ass; and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

Arrivé chez lui, il prit un couteau et, saisissant sa concubine, il la coupa membre par membre en douze morceaux, et l’envoya dans tout le territoire d’Israël.

And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.

Tous ceux qui virent cela dirent : « Jamais chose pareille n’est arrivée et ne s’est vue depuis que les enfants d’Israël sont montés du pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour ; réfléchissez-y, consultez-vous et prononcez. »

And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider it, take counsel, and speak.

Chapitre 20

Tous les enfants d’Israël sortirent, depuis Dan jusqu’à Bersabée et au pays de Galaad, et l’assemblée se réunit comme un seul homme devant Yahweh à Maspha.

Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto Jehovah at Mizpah.

Les chefs de tout le peuple, toutes les tribus d’Israël, se présentèrent dans l’assemblée du peuple de Dieu : quatre cent mille hommes de pied tirant l’épée.

And the chiefs of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

Et les fils de Benjamin apprirent que les enfants d’Israël étaient montés à Maspha. Les enfants d’Israël dirent : « Parlez : comment ce crime a-t-il été commis ! »

(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpah.) And the children of Israel said, Tell us, how was this wickedness brought to pass?

Alors le Lévite, le mari de la femme qui avait été tuée, prit la parole et dit : « J’étais entré à Gabaa de Benjamin, moi et ma concubine, pour y passer la nuit.

And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was murdered, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

Les habitants de Gabaa se sont levés contre moi et ont entouré pendant la nuit la maison où j’étais ; ils avaient l’intention de me tuer, et ils ont fait violence à ma concubine, et elle est morte.

And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about me by night; me they thought to have slain, and my concubine they forced, and she is dead.

J’ai saisi ma concubine, je l’ai coupée en morceaux, et je l’ai envoyée dans tout le territoire de l’héritage d’Israël ; car ils ont commis un crime et une infamie en Israël.

And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

Vous voici tous, enfants d’Israël ; consultez-vous, et décidez ici même. »

Behold, ye children of Israel, all of you, give here your advice and counsel.

Tout le peuple se leva comme un seul homme en disant : « Nul d’entre nous n’ira dans sa tente, nul ne retournera dans sa maison.

And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn unto his house.

Voici maintenant ce que nous ferons à Gabaa : Contre elle d’après le sort !

But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: [we will go up] against it by lot;

Nous prendrons dans toutes les tribus d’Israël dix hommes sur cent, cent sur mille, et mille sur dix mille ; ils iront chercher des vivres pour le peuple, afin qu’à leur arrivée on traite Gabaa de Benjamin selon toute l’infamie qu’elle a commise en Israël. »

and we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victuals for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.

C’est ainsi que tous les hommes d’Israël s’assemblèrent contre la ville, unis comme un seul homme.

So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

Les tribus d’Israël envoyèrent des hommes dans toutes les familles de Benjamin pour dire : « Qu’est-ce que ce crime qui a été commis chez vous ?

And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is come to pass among you?

Livrez maintenant les hommes pervers qui sont à Gabaa, afin que nous les fassions mourir et que nous ôtions le mal du milieu d’Israël. » Mais les Benjamites ne voulurent pas écouter la voix de leurs frères les enfants d’Israël.

Now therefore deliver up the men, the base fellows, that are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel.

Les fils de Benjamin, sortant de leurs villes, s’assemblèrent à Gabaa pour partir en guerre contre les enfants d’Israël.

And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

Les fils de Benjamin, sortis des villes, furent recensés en ce jour au nombre de vingt-six mille, tirant l’épée, sans compter les habitants de Gabaa, formant sept cents hommes d’élite.

And the children of Benjamin were numbered on that day out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

Parmi tout ce peuple il y avait sept cents hommes d’élite qui ne se servaient pas de la main droite ; tous ces combattants pouvaient lancer avec la fronde une pierre à un cheveu, sans le manquer.

Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at a hair-breadth, and not miss.

Le nombre des hommes d’Israël recensés, non compris ceux de Benjamin, fut de quatre cent mille tirant l’épée, tous gens de guerre.

And the men of Israel, besides Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.

Et les enfants d’Israël, s’étant levés, montèrent à Béthel, et consultèrent Dieu, en disant : « Qui de nous montera le premier pour combattre les fils de Benjamin ? » Yahweh répondit : « Que Juda monte le premier. »

And the children of Israel arose, and went up to Beth-el, and asked counsel of God; and they said, Who shall go up for us first to battle against the children of Benjamin? And Jehovah said, Judah [shall go up] first.

Les enfants d’Israël se mirent en marche dès le matin, et ils campèrent contre Gabaa.

And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.

Les hommes d’Israël s’avancèrent pour combattre ceux de Benjamin, et les hommes d’Israël se rangèrent en bataille contre eux, devant Gabaa.

And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel set the battle in array against them at Gibeah.

Alors les fils de Benjamin sortirent de Gabaa, et ils couchèrent par terre ce jour-là vingt-deux mille hommes d’Israël.

And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites on that day twenty and two thousand men.

Le peuple, savoir les hommes d’Israël, affermirent leur courage, et ils se rangèrent de nouveau en bataille dans le lieu où ils s’étaient placés le premier jour.

And the people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves, and set the battle again in array in the place where they set themselves in array the first day.

Et les enfants d’Israël montèrent et ils pleurèrent devant Yahweh jusqu’au soir ; et ils consultèrent Yahweh, en disant : « Marcherai-je encore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin, mon frère ? » Yahweh répondit : « Montez contre lui. »

And the children of Israel went up and wept before Jehovah until even; and they asked of Jehovah, saying, Shall I again draw nigh to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And Jehovah said, Go up against him.

Les enfants d’Israël s’approchèrent des fils de Benjamin, le second jour ;

And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

et, ce second jour, les fils de Benjamin sortirent de Gabaa à leur rencontre, et ils couchèrent encore par terre dix-huit mille hommes des enfants d’Israël, tous tirant l’épée.

And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

Tous les enfants d’Israël et tout le peuple montèrent et vinrent à Béthel ; ils pleurèrent, assis là devant Yahweh ; ils jeûnèrent en ce jour jusqu’au soir, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques devant Yahweh.

Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto Beth-el, and wept, and sat there before Jehovah, and fasted that day until even; and they offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before Jehovah.

Et les enfants d’Israël consultèrent Yahweh, — en ces jours-là, l’arche de l’alliance de Dieu était là,

And the children of Israel asked of Jehovah (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

et Phinées, fils d’Eléazar, fils d’Aaron, se tenait devant elle, en ces jours, — et ils dirent : « Marcherai-je encore pour combattre les fils de Benjamin, mon frère, ou bien dois-je cesser ? » Yahweh répondit : « Montez, car demain je les livrerai en ta main. »

and Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And Jehovah said, Go up; for to-morrow I will deliver him into thy hand.

Alors Israël plaça une embuscade autour de Gabaa,

And Israel set liers-in-wait against Gibeah round about.

et, le troisième jour, les enfants d’Israël montèrent contre les fils de Benjamin ; ils se rangèrent en bataille devant Gabaa, comme les autres fois.

And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and set themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

Et les fils de Benjamin sortirent à la rencontre du peuple, en se laissant attirer loin de la ville. Ils commencèrent à frapper et à tuer parmi le peuple, comme les autres fois, sur les routes dont l’une monte à Béthel et l’autre à Gabaa, dans la campagne ; ils tuèrent environ trente hommes d’Israël.

And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite and kill of the people, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to Beth-el, and the other to Gibeah, in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

Les fils de Benjamin disaient : « Les voilà battus devant nous comme auparavant ! » Et les enfants d’Israël disaient : « Fuyons, et attirons-les loin de la ville, sur ces route. »

And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them away from the city unto the highways.

Tous les hommes d’Israël quittèrent leur position et se rangèrent à Baal-Thamar ; en même temps l’embuscade d’Israël s’élança de son poste, de la plaine de Gabaa.

And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and set themselves in array at Baal-tamar: and the liers-in-wait of Israel brake forth out of their place, even out of Maareh-geba.

Dix mille hommes d’élite de tout Israël arrivèrent ainsi de devant Gabaa. Le combat fut rude, et les fils de Benjamin ne se doutaient pas que le malheur allait les atteindre.

And there came over against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore; but they knew not that evil was close upon them.

Yahweh battit Benjamin devant Israël, et les enfants d’Israël tuèrent ce jour-là à Benjamin vingt-cinq mille et cent hommes, tous tirant l’épée.

And Jehovah smote Benjamin before Israel; and the children of Israel destroyed of Benjamin that day twenty and five thousand and a hundred men: all these drew the sword.

Les fils de Benjamin virent donc qu’ils étaient battus. Les hommes d’Israël n’avaient, en effet, cédé du terrain à Benjamin que parce qu’ils avaient confiance dans l’embuscade qu’ils avaient placée contre Gabaa.

So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten; for the men of Israel gave place to Benjamin, because they trusted unto the liers-in-wait whom they had set against Gibeah.

Quant aux hommes de l’embuscade, ils se jetèrent promptement sur Gabaa ; puis, s’avançant, les hommes de l’embuscade frappèrent toute la ville du tranchant de l’épée.

And the liers-in-wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers-in-wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

Or il y avait ce signe convenu, entre les hommes d’Israël et ceux de l’embuscade, que ceux-ci feraient monter de la ville un nuage de fumée.

Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers-in-wait was, that they should make a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city.

Les hommes d’Israël firent alors volte-face dans la bataille. Les Benjamites leur avaient tué déjà environ trente hommes, et ils disaient : « Certainement les voilà battus devant nous comme dans le premier combat ! »

And the men of Israel turned in the battle, and Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons; for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.

Mais le nuage commençait à s’élever de la ville comme une colonne de fumée, et les Benjamites, regardant derrière eux, aperçurent la ville entière qui montait en feu vers le ciel.

But when the cloud began to arise up out of the city in a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them; and, behold, the whole of the city went up [in smoke] to heaven.

Les hommes d’Israël firent volte-face, et les hommes de Benjamin furent épouvantés en voyant que le malheur les atteignait.

And the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed; for they saw that evil was come upon them.

Ils tournèrent le dos devant les hommes d’Israël, par le chemin du désert ; mais les combattants les serrèrent de près, et ils tuèrent ceux des villes chacun en leurs propres endroits.

Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle followed hard after them; and they that came out of the cities destroyed them in the midst thereof.

Ils cernèrent Benjamin, ils le poursuivirent, ils l’écrasèrent là où il faisait halte, jusqu’en face de Gabaa, du côté du soleil levant.

They inclosed the Benjamites round about, [and] chased them, [and] trod them down at [their] resting-place, as far as over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

Il tomba dix-huit mille hommes de Benjamin, tous hommes vaillants.

And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these [were] men of valor.

Ceux qui restaient tournèrent le dos et s’enfuirent vers le désert, vers le rocher de Remmon. Les hommes d’Israël tuèrent cinq mille hommes sur les routes ; ils les serrèrent de près jusqu’à Gédéon, et ils en tuèrent deux mille.

And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men, and followed hard after them unto Gidom, and smote of them two thousand men.

Le nombre total des Benjamites qui périrent ce jour-là fut de vingt-cinq mille hommes tirant l’épée, tous hommes vaillants.

So that all who fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these [were] men of valor.

Six cents hommes qui avaient tourné le dos et s’étaient enfuis au désert, vers le rocher de Remmon, demeurèrent au rocher de Remmon pendant quatre mois.

But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon, and abode in the rock of Rimmon four months.

Les hommes d’Israël revinrent vers les fils de Benjamin, et ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée, depuis les villes, hommes et troupeaux, jusqu’à tout ce qu’on put trouver. Ils mirent aussi le feu à toutes les villes qu’ils trouvèrent.

And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city, and the cattle, and all that they found: moreover all the cities which they found they set on fire.

Chapitre 21

Les hommes d’Israël avaient juré à Maspha, en disant : « Aucun de nous ne donnera sa fille pour femme à un Benjamite. »

Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.

Le peuple vint à Béthel, et il y resta devant Dieu jusqu’au soir. Élevant la voix, ils firent de grandes lamentations, et ils dirent :

And the people came to Beth-el, and sat there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore.

« Pourquoi, ô Yahweh, Dieu d’Israël, est-il arrivé en Israël qu’il manque aujourd’hui une tribu d’Israël ? »

And they said, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to-day one tribe lacking in Israel?

Le lendemain, le peuple s’étant levé dès le matin, ils bâtirent là un autel, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.

Et les enfants d’Israël dirent : « Quel est celui d’entre toutes les tribus d’Israël qui n’est pas monté à l’assemblée devant Yahweh ? » Car on avait fait un serment solennel contre celui qui ne monterait pas vers Yahweh à Maspha, en disant : « Il sera puni de mort. »

And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up in the assembly unto Jehovah? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up unto Jehovah to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death.

Les enfants d’Israël avaient compassion de Benjamin, leur frère, et ils disaient : « Une tribu a été retranchée aujourd’hui d’Israël !

And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

Que ferons-nous pour eux, pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent ? Car nous avons juré par Yahweh de ne pas leur donner de nos filles pour femmes »

How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by Jehovah that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?

Ils dirent donc : « Y a-t-il une seule d’entre les tribus d’Israël qui ne soit pas montée vers Yahweh à Maspha ? » Et voici, personne de Jabès en Galaad n’était venu au camp, à l’assemblée.

And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto Jehovah to Mizpah? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.

On fit le recensement du peuple, et voici qu’il n’y avait là aucun des habitants de Jabès en Galaad.

For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there.

Alors l’assemblée envoya contre eux douze mille hommes d’entre les vaillants, en leur donnant cet ordre : « Allez, et frappez du tranchant de l’épée les habitants de Jabès en Galaad, avec les femmes et les enfants.

And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.

Voici ce que vous ferez : vous dévouerez à l’anathème tout homme, et toute femme qui a connu la couche d’un homme. »

And this is the thing that ye shall do: ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.

Ils trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Jabès en Galaad quatre cents jeunes filles vierges, qui n’avaient pas connu d’homme en partageant sa couche, et ils les amenèrent dans le camp à Silo, qui est au pays de Chanaan.

And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

Alors toute l’assemblée envoya des messagers pour parler aux fils de Benjamin qui étaient réfugiés au rocher de Remmon, et pour leur annoncer la paix.

And the whole congregation sent and spake to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace unto them.

Les Benjamites revinrent en ce temps-là, et on leur donna les femmes à qui on avait laissé la vie parmi les femmes de Jabès en Galaad ; mais il ne s’en trouva pas assez pour eux.

And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.

Le peuple avait compassion de Benjamin, car Yahweh avait fait une brèche dans les tribus d’Israël.

And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that Jehovah had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

Les anciens de l’assemblée dirent : « Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été détruites ? »

Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?

Et ils dirent : « Que l’héritage de ceux qui ont échappé demeure à Benjamin, afin qu’une tribu ne soit pas effacée d’Israël.

And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel.

Mais nous, nous ne pouvons pas leur donner de nos filles pour femmes, car les enfants d’Israël ont juré, en disant : « Maudit soit celui qui donnera sa fille pour femme à un Benjamite ? »

Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.

Et ils dirent : « Voici une fête de Yahweh, qui se célèbre chaque année à Silo, ville située au nord de Béthel, à l’orient de la route qui monte de Béthel à Sichem, et au midi de Lébona. »

And they said, Behold, there is a feast of Jehovah from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.

Puis ils donnèrent cet ordre aux fils de Benjamin : « Allez, et placez-vous en embuscade dans les vignes.

And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,

Vous regarderez, et, lorsque les filles de Silo sortiront pour danser en chœur, vous sortirez des vignes, et vous enlèverez chacun votre femme d’entre les filles de Silo, et vous vous en irez dans le pays de Benjamin.

and see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

Si leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent réclamer auprès de nous, nous leur dirons : Laissez-les-nous, car nous n’avons pas pris une femme pour chacun dans la guerre. Et ce n’est pas vous qui les leur avez données ; en ce cas, vous seriez coupables. »

And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come to complain unto us, that we will say unto them, Grant them graciously unto us, because we took not for each man [of them] his wife in battle, neither did ye give them unto them, else would ye now be guilty.

Les fils de Benjamin firent ainsi : ils prirent des femmes selon leur nombre parmi les danseuses, qu’ils enlevèrent, et, s’étant mis en route, ils retournèrent dans leur héritage ; ils rebâtirent les villes et ils y habitèrent.

And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they carried off: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them.

En ce temps-là, les enfants d’Israël s’en allèrent de là, chacun dans sa tribu et dans sa famille, et ils retournèrent de là, chacun dans son héritage.

And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

En ces jours-là, il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël ; chacun faisait ce qui était bon…

In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
