Rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem and renewing the covenant

The second half of the post-exilic Ezra–Nehemiah narrative. Nehemiah, cupbearer to the Persian king, returns to Jerusalem to rebuild its walls and to reform community practice alongside Ezra.

Chapitre 1

Paroles de Néhémie, fils de Helchias. Au mois de Casleu, la vingtième année, comme j’étais à Suse, dans le château,

The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,

arriva Hanani, l’un de mes frères, avec des hommes de Juda. Je les questionnai au sujet des Juifs délivrés, qui avaient échappé à la captivité, et au sujet de Jérusalem.

Hanani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men out of Judah; and I asked them about the Jews who had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

Ils me répondirent : « Les réchappés, ceux qui ont échappé à la captivité, là-bas dans la province, sont dans une grande misère et dans l’opprobre ; les murailles de Jérusalem sont démolies et ses portes consumées par le feu. »

They said to me, “The remnant who are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.”

Lorsque j’entendis ces choses, je m’assis et je pleurai, et je fus plusieurs jours dans le deuil. Je jeûnais et je priais devant le Dieu du ciel,

When I heard these words, I sat down and wept, and mourned several days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven,

en disant : « Ah ! Yahweh, Dieu du ciel, Dieu grand et redoutable, vous qui gardez l’alliance et la miséricorde à l’égard de ceux qui vous aiment et qui observent vos commandements,

and said, “I beg you, Yahweh, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments:

que votre oreille soit attentive et que vos yeux soient ouverts, pour que vous entendiez la prière de votre serviteur, celle que je vous adresse maintenant, nuit et jour, pour vos serviteurs, les enfants d’Israël, en confessant les péchés des enfants d’Israël, ceux que nous avons commis contre vous ; car moi et la maison de mon père, nous avons péché.

Let your ear now be attentive, and your eyes open, that you may listen to the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you at this time, day and night, for the children of Israel your servants, while I confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Yes, I and my father’s house have sinned.

Nous avons très mal agi envers vous, nous n’avons pas observé les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que vous avez prescrits à Moïse, votre serviteur.

We have dealt very corruptly against you, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances, which you commanded your servant Moses.

Souvenez-vous de la parole que vous avez ordonné à Moïse, votre serviteur, de prononcer, en disant : Si vous transgressez mes préceptes, je vous disperserai parmi les peuples ;

“Remember, I beg you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you trespass, I will scatter you among the peoples;

mais si vous revenez à moi, et si vous observez mes commandements et les mettez en pratique, alors même que vos exilés seraient à l’extrémité du ciel, de là je les rassemblerai et je les ramènerai dans le lieu que j’ai choisi pour y faire habiter mon nom.

but if you return to me, and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts were in the uttermost part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and will bring them to the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there.’

Ils sont vos serviteurs et votre peuple, que vous avez rachetés par votre grande puissance et par votre main forte.

“Now these are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power, and by your strong hand.

Ah ! Seigneur, que votre oreille soit attentive à la prière de votre serviteur et à la prière de vos serviteurs qui se plaisent à craindre votre nom ! Daignez aujourd’hui donner le succès à votre serviteur, et faites-lui trouver grâce devant cet homme ! » J’étais alors échanson du roi.

Lord, I beg you, let your ear be attentive now to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who delight to fear your name; and please prosper your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” Now I was cup bearer to the king.

Chapitre 2

Au mois de Nisan, la vingtième année du roi Artaxerxès, comme le vin était devant lui, je pris le vin et je l’offris au roi, et je tâchai de n’être pas triste en sa présence.

In the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, I picked up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad before in his presence.

Le roi me dit : « Pourquoi ton visage est-il triste, puisque tu n’es pas malade ? Ce ne peut être qu’une tristesse de cœur. »

The king said to me, “Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart.” Then I was very much afraid.

Je fus très effrayé et je répondis au roi : « Que le roi vive éternellement ! Comment mon visage ne serait-il pas triste, lorsque la ville où sont les sépulcres de mes pères est dévastée et que ses portes sont consumées par le feu ? »

I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why shouldn’t my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?”

Et le roi me dit : « Que veux-tu demander ? »

Then the king said to me, “What is your request?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.

Je priai le Dieu du ciel, et je répondis au roi : « Si le roi le trouve bon, et si ton serviteur t’est agréable, je demande que tu m’envoies en Juda, vers la ville des sépulcres de mes pères, pour que je la rebâtisse. »

I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you would send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may build it.”

Et le roi me dit, la reine étant assise près de lui : « Jusqu’à quand durera ton voyage, et quand reviendras-tu ? » il plut au roi de m’envoyer et je lui fixai un temps.

The king said to me (the queen was also sitting by him), “How long will your journey be? When will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me, and I set a time for him.

Puis je dis au roi : « Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’on me donne des lettres pour les gouverneurs d’au delà du fleuve, afin qu’ils me laissent passer jusqu’à ce que j’arrive en Juda,

Moreover I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;

et une lettre pour Asaph, garde de la forêt qui appartient au roi, afin qu’il me fournisse du bois pour mettre des poutres aux portes de la forteresse qui est proche du temple, pour la muraille de la ville et pour la maison où je me retirerai. » Et le roi me donna ces lettres, car la main favorable de mon Dieu était sur moi.

and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I will occupy.” The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.

Je me rendis donc auprès des gouverneurs d’au delà du fleuve, et je leur remis les lettres du roi ; or le roi avait envoyé avec moi des chefs militaires et des cavaliers.

Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.

Quand Sanaballat, le Horonite, et Tobie, le serviteur ammonite, furent au courant, il leur parut très mauvais qu’un homme vint pour procurer le bien des enfants d’Israël. When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, because a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

J’arrivai à Jérusalem et, après y avoir passé trois jours,

So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

je me levai pendant la nuit, avec un petit nombre d’hommes. Je ne communiquai à personne ce que mon Dieu m’avait mis au cœur de faire pour Jérusalem. Je n’avais avec moi d’autre bête de somme que ma propre monture.

I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. I didn’t tell anyone what my God put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There wasn’t any animal with me, except the animal that I rode on.

Je sortis de nuit par la porte de la Vallée, me dirigeant vers la source du Dragon et la porte du Fumier ; et je considérai les murailles démolies de Jérusalem et ses portes consumées par le feu.

I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the jackal’s well, then to the dung gate, and inspected the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates were consumed with fire.

Je continuai vers la porte de la Source et l’étang du Roi, et il n’y avait pas de place pour que la monture pût passer sous moi.

Then I went on to the spring gate and to the king’s pool, but there was no place for the animal that was under me to pass.

Je montai de nuit dans le ravin, et je considérai la muraille ; puis je revins par la porte de la Vallée, et je rentrai.

Then went I up in the night by the brook, and inspected the wall; and I turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned.

Les magistrats ignoraient où j’étais allé et ce que je voulais faire. Jusqu’à ce moment, je n’avais fait part de rien aux Juifs, ni aux prêtres, ni aux grands, ni aux magistrats, ni au reste du peuple qui devait s’occuper des travaux.

The rulers didn’t know where I went, or what I did. I had not as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest who did the work.

Je leur dis Je leur dis alors : « Vous voyez la misère dans laquelle nous sommes, Jérusalem est dévastée, et ses portes sont consumées par le feu. Venez, rebâtissons la muraille de Jérusalem, et nous ne serons plus un sujet d’opprobre. »

Then I said to them, “You see the bad situation that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won’t be disgraced.”

Et je leur racontai comment la main favorable de mon Dieu avait été sur moi, et aussi quelles paroles le roi m’avaient adressées. Ils répondirent : « Levons-nous, et bâtissons ! » Et ils mirent avec courage la main à cette bonne œuvre.

I told them of the hand of my God which was good on me, as also of the king’s words that he had spoken to me. They said, “Let’s rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work.

Quand Sanaballat, le Horonite, Tobie, le serviteur ammonite, et Gosem, l’Arabe, l’eurent appris, ils se moquèrent de nous et nous méprisèrent. Ils disaient : « Que faites-vous là ? Vous révoltez-vous contre le roi ? »

But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammontite servant, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they ridiculed us, and despised us, and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?”

Je leur fis réponse et leur dis : « Le Dieu du ciel nous donnera le succès. Nous, ses serviteurs, nous allons nous mettre à rebâtir ; quant à vous, vous n’avez ni part, ni droit, ni souvenir dans Jérusalem. »

Then I answered them, and said to them, “The God of heaven will prosper us. Therefore we, his servants, will arise and build; but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.”

Chapitre 3

Eliasib, le grand prêtre, et ses frères les prêtres se mirent à bâtir la porte des Brebis ; ils la consacrèrent et en posèrent les battants ; ils réparèrent la muraille et la consacrèrent jusqu’à la tour de Méa et jusqu’à la tour de Hananéel.

Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the sheep gate. They sanctified it, and set up its doors. They sanctified it even to the tower of Hammeah, to the tower of Hananel.

À côté bâtissaient les hommes de Jéricho ; et à côté bâtissait Zachur, fils d’Amri.

Next to him the men of Jericho built. Next to them Zaccur the son of Imri built.

Les fils d’Asnaa bâtirent la porte des Poissons ; ils y mirent des poutres et en posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres ;

The sons of Hassenaah built the fish gate. They laid its beams, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.

et à côté, réparait Marimuth, fils d’Urie, fils d’Accus ; et à côté réparait Mosollam, fils de Barachie, fils de Mésézébel ; et à côté réparait Sadoc, fils de Baana ;

Next to them, Meremoth the son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz made repairs. Next to them, Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabel made repairs. Next to them, Zadok the son of Baana made repairs.

et à côté réparaient les Thécuites : mais leurs chefs n’apportèrent pas leur concours à la besogne de leur Seigneur.

Next to them, the Tekoites made repairs; but their nobles didn’t put their necks to the Lord’s work.

Joïada, fils de Phaséa, et Mosollam, fils de Besodias, réparèrent la Vieille Porte ; ils y mirent des poutres et en posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres.

Joiada the son of Paseah and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah repaired the old gate. They laid its beams, and set up its doors, and its bolts, and its bars.

Et à côté réparaient Meltias le Gabaonite, Jadon le Méronathite, et les hommes de Gabaon et de Maspha, près du tribunal du gouverneur d’au delà du fleuve ;

Next to them, Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah, repaired the residence of the governor beyond the River.

et à côté réparait Eziel, fils d’Araïas, chef des orfèvres ; et à côté réparait Ananie, de la corporation des parfumeurs. Ils laissèrent Jérusalem jusqu’à la muraille large.

Next to him, Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, goldsmiths, made repairs. Next to him, Hananiah, one of the perfumers, made repairs, and they fortified Jerusalem even to the wide wall.

À côté d’eux réparait Raphaïas, fils de Hur, chef de la moitié du district de Jérusalem.

Next to them, Rephaiah the son of Hur, the ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs.

À côté réparait, vis-à-vis de sa maison, Jédaïas, fils de Haromaph ; et à côté réparait Hattus, fils de Hasebonias.

Next to them, Jedaiah the son of Harumaph made repairs across from his house. Next to him, Hattush the son of Hashabneiah made repairs.

Melchias, fils de Herem, et Hasub, fils de Phahath-Moab, réparèrent une autre partie de la muraille et la tour des Fourneaux.

Malchijah the son of Harim, and Hasshub the son of Pahathmoab, repaired another portion, and the tower of the furnaces.

À côté réparait, avec ses filles, Sellum, fils d’Alohès, chef de l’autre moitié du district de Jérusalem.

Next to him, Shallum the son of Hallohesh, the ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, he and his daughters, made repairs.

Hanun et les habitants de Zanoé réparèrent la porte de la Vallée ; ils la bâtirent et en posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres ; ils firent en outre mille coudées de mur jusqu’à la porte du Fumier.

Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the valley gate. They built it, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, and one thousand cubits of the wall to the dung gate.

Melchias, fils de Réchab, chef du district de Bethacharam, répara la porte du Fumier ; il la bâtit et en posa les battants, les verrous et les barres.

Malchijah the son of Rechab, the ruler of the district of Beth Haccherem repaired the dung gate. He built it, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.

Sellun, fils de Cholhoza, chef du district de Maspha, répara la porte de la Source ; il la bâtit, la couvrit et en posa les battants, les verrous et les barres ; il fit en outre les murs de l’étang de Siloé, près du jardin du Roi, jusqu’aux degrés qui descendent de la cité de David.

Shallun the son of Colhozeh, the ruler of the district of Mizpah repaired the spring gate. He built it, and covered it, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, and the wall of the pool of Shelah by the king’s garden, even to the stairs that go down from David’s city.

Après lui, Néhémie, fils d’Azboc, chef de la moitié du district de Bethsur, répara jusque vis-à-vis des sépulcres de David, jusqu’au réservoir qui avait été construit, et jusqu’à la maison des Héros.

After him, Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, the ruler of half the district of Beth Zur, made repairs to the place opposite the tombs of David, and to the pool that was made, and to the house of the mighty men.

Après lui réparaient les lévites, sous la conduite de Réhum, fils de Benni ; à côté de lui réparait, pour son district, Hasébias, chef de la moitié du district de Céïla.

After him, the Levites, Rehum the son of Bani made repairs. Next to him, Hashabiah, the ruler of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his district.

Après lui réparaient leurs frères, sous la conduite de Bavaï, fils de Enadad, chef de l’autre moitié du district de Céïla.

After him, their brothers, Bavvai the son of Henadad, the ruler of half the district of Keilah made repairs.

À côté, Azer, fils de Josué, chef de Maspha, répara une autre portion de la muraille, vis-à-vis de la montée de l’arsenal, à l’angle.

Next to him, Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, repaired another portion, across from the ascent to the armory at the turning of the wall.

Après lui, Baruch, fils de Zachaï, réparait avec ardeur une autre portion, depuis l’angle jusqu’à la porte de la maison d’Eliasib, le grand prêtre.

After him, Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired another portion, from the turning of the wall to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.

Après lui, Mérimuth, fils d’Urie, fils de Haccus, réparait une autre portion, depuis la porte de la maison d’Eliasib, jusqu’à l’extrémité de la maison d’Eliasib.

After him, Meremoth the son of Uriah the son of Hakkoz repaired another portion, from the door of the house of Eliashib even to the end of the house of Eliashib.

Après lui réparaient les prêtres, les hommes de la plaine du Jourdain.

After him, the priests, the men of the Plain made repairs.

Après eux Benjamin et Hasub réparaient vis-à-vis de leur maison. Après eux, Azarias, fils de Maasias, fils d’Ananie, réparait à côté de sa maison.

After them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs across from their house. After them, Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah made repairs beside his own house.

Après lui, Bennui, fils de Hénadad réparait une autre portion, depuis la maison d’Azarias jusqu’à l’angle et jusqu’au tournant.

After him, Binnui the son of Henadad repaired another portion, from the house of Azariah to the turning of the wall, and to the corner.

Phalel, fils d’Ozi, réparait vis-à-vis de l’angle et de la haute tour qui fait saillie en avant de la maison du roi, près de la cour de la prison. Après lui réparait Phadaïas, fils de Pharos.

Palal the son of Uzai made repairs opposite the turning of the wall, and the tower that stands out from the upper house of the king, which is by the court of the guard. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh made repairs.

Les Nathinéens demeuraient sur Ophel, jusque vis-à-vis de la porte de l’Eau, à l’orient, et de la tour en saillie.

(Now the temple servants lived in Ophel, to the place over against the water gate toward the east, and the tower that stands out.)

Après lui, les Thécuites réparèrent une autre portion, vis-à-vis de la grande tour en saillie, jusqu’au mur d’Ophel.

After him the Tekoites repaired another portion, over against the great tower that stands out, and to the wall of Ophel.

Au-dessus de la porte des Chevaux, réparaient les prêtres, chacun devant sa maison.

Above the horse gate, the priests made repairs, everyone across from his own house.

Après lui, Sadoc, fils d’Emmer, réparait devant sa maison ; après lui, réparait Sémaïas, fils de Séchénias, gardien de la porte orientale du temple.

After them, Zadok the son of Immer made repairs across from his own house. After him, Shemaiah the son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the east gate made repairs.

Après lui, Hananias, fils de Sélémias, et Hanun, le sixième fils de Séleph, réparaient une autre portion de la muraille. Après lui, réparait Mosollam, fils de Barachie, devant sa demeure.

After him, Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another portion. After him, Meshullam the son of Berechiah made repairs across from his room.

Après lui, réparait Melchias, de la corporation des orfèvres, jusqu’à l’habitation des Nathinéens et des marchands, devant la porte de Miphcad, et jusqu’à la chambre haute du tournant.

After him, Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths to the house of the temple servants, and of the merchants, made repairs opposite the gate of Hammiphkad, and to the ascent of the corner.

Et, entre la chambre haute du tournant et la porte des Brebis, réparaient les orfèvres et les marchands. 3. Chap. iii, 33 — iv, 17 : Continuation des travaux malgré les obstacles. — Moqueries des ennemis, prière de Néhémie (iii, 33-37) ; les murs à mi-hauteur (iii, 38). Between the ascent of the corner and the sheep gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.

Chapitre 4

Quand Sanaballat, Tobie, les Arabes, les Ammonites et les Azotiens, apprirent que la réparation des murs avançait et que les brèches commençaient à se fermer, ils furent très irrités.

But when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and was very indignant, and mocked the Jews.

Ils se liguèrent tous ensemble pour venir attaquer Jérusalem et y causer du trouble.

He spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria, and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, since they are burned?”

Nous priâmes notre Dieu et nous établîmes une garde contre eux, jour et nuit, pour nous protéger contre eux.

Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, “What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall.”

Mais Juda disait : « Les forces manquent aux porteurs de fardeaux, et il y a quantité de décombres ; nous ne pourrons pas bâtir la muraille. »

“Hear, our God; for we are despised; and turn back their reproach on their own head, give them up for a plunder in a land of captivity;

Et nos ennemis disaient : « Ils ne sauront rien, ils ne verront rien, jusqu’à ce que nous arrivions au milieu d’eux ; nous les massacrerons et nous ferons cesser l’ouvrage. »

don’t cover their iniquity, and don’t let their sin be blotted out from before you; for they have insulted the builders.”

Or, quand venaient les Juifs qui habitaient près d’eux, ils nous avertirent dix fois de tous les lieux d’où nos adversaires revenaient contre nous.

So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to half its height: for the people had a mind to work.

Alors je plaçai aux endroits les plus bas, derrière la muraille, en des endroits découverts, je plaçai le peuple par familles, tous avec leurs épées, leurs lances et leurs arcs.

But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be filled, they were very angry;

Ayant regardé, je me levai et je dis aux grands, aux magistrats et au reste du peuple : « Ne craignez pas devant eux ! Souvenez-vous du Seigneur, grand et redoutable, et combattez pour vos frères, pour vos fils et vos filles, pour vos femmes et pour vos maisons ! »

and they all conspired together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion among us.

Quand nos ennemis apprirent que nous étions avertis, et que Dieu avait anéanti leur projet nous retournâmes tous à la muraille, chacun à son ouvrage.

But we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

Mais à partir de ce jour, la moitié de mes gens travaillait à l’œuvre, et l’autre moitié tenait des lances, des boucliers, des arcs et des cuirasses, et les chefs étaient derrière toute la maison de Juda.

Judah said, “The strength of the bearers of burdens is fading, and there is much rubble; so that we are not able to build the wall.”

Parmi ceux qui bâtissaient la muraille, les uns, ceux qui portaient les fardeaux et s’en chargeaient, travaillaient d’une main à l’œuvre, pendant que l’autre tenait une arme ;

Our adversaries said, “They will not know or see, until we come in among them and kill them, and cause the work to cease.”

les autres, ceux qui bâtissaient, avaient chacun leur épée ceinte autour des reins, pendant qu’ils bâtissaient ; celui qui sonnait de la trompette se tenait près de moi.

When the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times from all places, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”

Et je dis aux grands, aux magistrats et au reste du peuple : « L’ouvrage est considérable et sur une vaste étendue ; nous sommes dispersés sur la muraille, éloignés les uns des autres.

Therefore I set guards in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places. I set the people by family groups with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

De quelque endroit que vous entendiez le son de la trompette, rassemblez-vous auprès de nous ; notre Dieu combattra pour nous. »

I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them! Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”

Et nous travaillions à l’œuvre, la moitié d’entre nous tenant des lances depuis le lever de l’aurore jusqu’à l’apparition des étoiles.

When our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, all of us returned to the wall, everyone to his work.

Dans ce même temps, je dis encore au peuple : « Que chacun, avec son serviteur, passe la nuit dans Jérusalem, pour nous servir de garde pendant la nuit, et travailler pendant le jour. »

From that time forth, half of my servants did the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

Mais ni moi, ni mes frères, ni mes gens, ni les hommes de garde qui me suivaient, ne quittions nos vêtements ; chacun ne les ôtait que pour l’ablution.

Those who built the wall, and those who bore burdens loaded themselves; everyone with one of his hands did the work, and with the other held his weapon.

Among the builders, everyone wore his sword at his side, and so built. He who sounded the trumpet was by me.

I said to the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and large, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another.

Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally there to us. Our God will fight for us.”

So we did the work. Half of the people held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.

Likewise at the same time said I to the people, “Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day.”

So neither I, nor my brothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes. Everyone took his weapon to the water.

Chapitre 5

Et il s’éleva une grande plainte des gens du peuple et de leurs femmes contre leurs frères les Juifs.

Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brothers the Jews.

Il y en avait qui disaient : « Nous, nos fils et nos filles, nous sommes nombreux ; recevons du blé, afin que nous mangions et que nous vivions. »

For there were that said, “We, our sons and our daughters, are many. Let us get grain, that we may eat and live.”

Il y en avait qui disaient : « Nous engageons nos champs, nos vignes et nos maisons pour recevoir du blé durant la famine. »

There were also some that said, “We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses. Let us get grain, because of the famine.”

Il y en avait qui disaient : « Nous avons, pour payer le tribut du roi, emprunté de l’argent sur nos champs et nos vignes.

There were also some who said, “We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute using our fields and our vineyards as collateral.

Et maintenant, notre chair est comme la chair de nos frères, nos enfants sont comme leurs enfants ; et voici que nous soumettons à la servitude nos fils et nos filles, et il y a de nos filles qui sont déjà servantes !… Et nous n’y pouvons rien, car nos champs et nos vignes sont à d’autres. »

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children as their children. Behold, we bring our sons and our daughters into bondage to be servants, and some of our daughters have been brought into bondage. It is also not in our power to help it, because other men have our fields and our vineyards.”

Je fus très irrité lorsque j’entendis leurs plaintes et ces paroles.

I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

Et, après avoir réfléchi en moi-même, j’adressai des réprimandes aux grands et aux magistrats, et je leur dis : « Vous prêtez donc à intérêt, chacun à votre frère ! » Et, ayant réuni à cause d’eux une grande assemblée,

Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them, “You exact usury, everyone of his brother.” I held a great assembly against them.

je leur dis : « Nous avons racheté selon notre pouvoir nos frères les Juifs qui étaient vendus aux nations, et vous vendriez vous-mêmes vos frères, et c’est à nous qu’ils seraient vendus !… » Ils se turent, ne trouvant rien à répondre.

I said to them, “We, after our ability, have redeemed our brothers the Jews that were sold to the nations; and would you even sell your brothers, and should they be sold to us?” Then they held their peace, and found not a word to say.

J’ajoutai : « Ce n’est pas une bonne action que vous faites là ! Ne devriez-vous pas marcher dans la crainte de notre Dieu, pour éviter l’insulte des nations, nos ennemies ?

Also I said, “The thing that you do is not good. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?

Moi aussi, mes frères et mes serviteurs, nous leur avons prêté de l’argent et du blé. Faisons l’abandon de cette dette.

I likewise, my brothers and my servants, lend them money and grain. Please let us stop this usury.

Rendez-leur donc aujourd’hui leurs champs, leurs vignes, leurs oliviers et leurs maisons, et le centième de l’argent, du vin nouveau et de l’huile que vous avez exigé d’eux comme intérêt. »

Please restore to them, even today, their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that you are charging them.”

Ils répondirent : « Nous le rendrons, et nous ne leur demanderons plus rien ; nous ferons ce que tu dis. » J’appelai alors les prêtres, et je leur fis jurer qu’ils agiraient selon cette parole.

Then they said, “We will restore them, and will require nothing of them. We will do so, even as you say.” Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise.

Et je secouai mon manteau, en disant : « Que Dieu secoue ainsi hors de sa maison et de ses biens tout homme qui n’aura pas tenu cette parole, et qu’ainsi cet homme soit secoué et laissé à vide ! » Toute l’assemblée dit : « Amen ! » et loua Yahweh ; et le peuple agit selon cette parole.

Also I shook out my lap, and said, “So may God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that doesn’t perform this promise; even be he shaken out, and emptied like this.” All the assembly said, “Amen,” and praised Yahweh. The people did according to this promise.

Depuis le jour où le roi me chargea d’être leur gouverneur dans le pays de Juda, savoir depuis la vingtième année jusqu’à la trente-deuxième année du roi Artaxerxès, pendant douze ans, ni moi ni mes frères n’avons mangé le pain du gouverneur.

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brothers have not eaten the bread of the governor.

Les anciens gouverneurs qui m’avaient précédé accablaient le peuple et recevaient de lui du pain et du vin, outre quarante sicles d’argent ; leurs serviteurs mêmes opprimaient le peuple ; mais moi, je n’ai point agi de la sorte, par crainte de Dieu.

But the former governors who were before me were supported by the people, and took bread and wine from them, plus forty shekels of silver; yes, even their servants ruled over the people; but I didn’t do so, because of the fear of God.

Et même, je me suis appliqué à l’œuvre de cette muraille ; nous n’avons acheté aucun champ, et tous mes gens étaient là rassemblés pour l’œuvre.

Yes, I also continued in the work of this wall. We didn’t buy any land. All my servants were gathered there to the work.

J’avais à ma table cent cinquante hommes, Juifs et magistrats, outre ceux qui venaient à nous des nations d’alentour.

Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, one hundred fifty men, besides those who came to us from among the nations that were around us.

Voici ce qu’on préparait pour chaque jour : un bœuf, six moutons choisis, de la volaille étaient préparés à mes frais, et, tous les dix jours, tout le vin nécessaire, en abondance. Malgré cela, je n’ai pas réclamé le pain du gouverneur, parce que les travaux pesaient lourdement sur ce peuple.

Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep. Also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days a store of all sorts of wine. Yet for all this, I didn’t demand the governor’s pay, because the bondage was heavy on this people.

Souvenez-vous en ma faveur, ô mon Dieu, de tout ce que j’ai fait pour ce peuple !

Remember to me, my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.

Chapitre 6

Lorsqu’il fut connu de Sanaballat, de Tobie, de Gosem l’Arabe et du reste de nos ennemis que j’avais rebâti la muraille et qu’il n’y restait plus de brèche — jusqu’à cette date toutefois je n’avais pas mis les battants aux portes, —

Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates)

Sanaballat et Gosem m’envoyèrent dire : « Viens, et ayons ensemble une entrevue dans les villages, dans la vallée d’Ono. » Ils avaient le dessein de me faire du mal.

Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.

Je leur envoyai des messagers pour leur dire : « J’exécute un grand travail, et je ne puis descendre. Pourquoi le travail serait-il interrompu, parce que je le quitterais pour descendre vers vous ? »

I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I can’t come down. Why should the work cease, while I leave it, and come down to you?”

Ils m’adressèrent quatre fois la même proposition, et je leur fis la même réponse.

They sent to me four times like this; and I answered them the same way.

Sanaballat m’envoya de la même manière une cinquième fois son serviteur, qui tenait à la main une lettre ouverte.

Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,

Il y était écrit : « Le bruit se répand parmi les nations et Gosem affirme que toi et les Juifs, vous avez dessein de vous révolter, et que c’est pour cela que tu rebâtis la muraille ; et, d’après ces rapports, tu veux devenir leur roi.

in which was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words.

Et même tu as établis des prophètes pour faire à ton propos cette proclamation dans Jérusalem : Il y a un roi en Juda. Maintenant, on va informer le roi de cette affaire. Viens donc, et consultons-nous ensemble. »

You have also appointed prophets to proclaim of you at Jerusalem, saying, ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.”

Et je lui envoyai dire : « Rien n’est arrivé de pareil à ces choses que tu dis ; c’est de ton cœur que tu les inventes. »

Then I sent to him, saying, “There are no such things done as you say, but you imagine them out of your own heart.”

Car tous voulaient nous effrayer, se disant : « Leurs mains affaiblies se détacheront de l’œuvre, et elle ne s’accomplira pas. » Maintenant, ô mon Dieu, donne force à mes mains !

For they all would have made us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done.” But now, strengthen my hands.

Je me rendis chez Sémaïas, fils de Dalaïas, fils de Métabéel. Il s’était enfermé, et il dit : « Allons ensemble dans la maison de Dieu, dans l’intérieur du temple et fermons les portes du temple ; car on vient pour te tuer ; c’est pendant la nuit qu’on viendra pour te tuer. »

I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you. Yes, in the night will they come to kill you.”

Je répondis : « Un homme comme moi prendre la fuite… ! Et comment un homme comme moi pénétrerait-il dans le temple et demeurerait-il en vie ? Je n’entrerai point. »

I said, “Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”

Et je fis attention, et voici que ce n’était pas Dieu qui l’envoyait ; il avait prononcé sur moi une prophétie parce que Tobie et Sanaballat l’avaient acheté.

I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

On l’avait acheté pour que j’aie peur, que j’agisse selon ses avis et que je pèche ; et cela leur eut été un prétexte pour me faire un mauvais renom et me couvrir d’opprobre.

He hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

Souvenez-vous, ô mon Dieu, de Tobie et de Sanaballat selon ces méfaits ! Et aussi de Noadias le prophète, et des autres prophètes qui cherchaient à m’effrayer.

“Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.”

La muraille fut achevée le vingt-cinquième jour du mois d’Elul, en cinquante-deux jours.

So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.

Lorsque tous nos ennemis l’apprirent, toutes les nations qui étaient autour de nous furent dans la crainte ; elles éprouvèrent un grand découragement et reconnurent que c’était par le secours de notre Dieu que cette œuvre s’était accomplie.

When all our enemies heard of it, all the nations that were around us were afraid, and they lost their confidence; for they perceived that this work was done by our God.

Dans ce temps-là aussi, des grands de Juda multipliaient leurs lettres à l’adresse de Tobie, et celles de Tobie leur parvenaient.

Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them.

Car beaucoup de grands en Juda lui étaient liés par serment, parce qu’il était gendre de Séchénias, fils d’Aréa, et que son fils Johanan avait pris pour femme la fille de Mosollam, fils de Barachie.

For there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as wife.

Ils disaient même ses bonnes qualités devant moi, et ils lui rapportaient mes paroles. Tobie envoyait des lettres pour m’effrayer.

Also they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.

Chapitre 7

Lorsque la muraille fut rebâtie et que j’eus posé les battants des portes, les portiers, les chantres et les lévites furent chargés de la surveillance.

Now when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed,

Je donnai autorité sur Jérusalem à Hanani, mon frère, et à Ananie, commandant de la citadelle, car c’était un homme fidèle et craignant Dieu plus que beaucoup d’autres.

I put my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the governor of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem; for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.

Et je leur dis : « Que les portes de Jérusalem ne soient pas ouvertes avant que soit venue la chaleur du soleil ; le soir, pendant que les gardes seront encore à leur poste, on fermera les portes et on mettra les barres ; et, pendant la nuit, on établira des gardes pris parmi les habitants de Jérusalem, chacun à son poste, et chacun devant sa maison. 7. chap. vii, 4-73a : En vue du repeuplement de la ville ; liste des rapatriés. — Peu d’habitants à Jérusalem, projet de dénombrement, découverte du registre généalogique (vii, 4, 5). I said to them, “Don’t let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut the doors, and you bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyone in his watch, with everyone near his house.”

Or la ville était spacieuse et grande, mais il n’y avait que peu d’habitants au milieu d’elle, et toutes les maisons n’étaient pas rebâties.

Now the city was wide and large; but the people were few therein, and the houses were not built.

Mon Dieu me mit au cœur d’assembler les grands, les magistrats et le peuple, pour en faire le dénombrement. Je trouvai un registre généalogique de ceux qui étaient montés les premiers, et j’y vis écrit ce qui suit :

My God put into my heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be listed by genealogy. I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up at the first, and I found this written in it:

Voici les gens de la province qui revinrent de l’exil, — ceux que Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, avait emmenés captifs, et qui retournèrent à Jérusalem et en Juda, chacun dans sa ville, —

These are the children of the province, who went up out of the captivity of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and who returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, everyone to his city;

These searched for their genealogical records, but couldn’t find them. Therefore were they deemed disqualified and removed from the priesthood.

et le gouverneur leur interdit de manger des choses très saintes, jusqu’à ce que le prêtre se levât pour consulter Dieu par l’Urim et le Thummim.

The governor told that they should not eat of the most holy things until a priest stood up to minister with Urim and Thummim.

The whole assembly together was forty-two thousand three hundred sixty,

sans compter leurs serviteurs et leurs servantes, qui étaient au nombre de sept mille trois cent trente-sept ; parmi eux se trouvaient deux cent quarante cinq chanteurs et chanteuses.

besides their male servants and their female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven; and they had two hundred forty-five singing men and singing women.

Ils avaient sept cent trente-six chevaux, deux cent quarante-cinq mulets,

Their horses were seven hundred thirty-six; their mules, two hundred forty-five;

quatre cent trente cinq chameaux et six mille sept cent vingt ânes.

their camels, four hundred thirty-five; their donkeys, six thousand seven hundred twenty.

Plusieurs des chefs de famille firent des dons pour l’œuvre. Le gouverneur donna au trésor mille dariques d’or, cinquante coupes, cinq cent trente tuniques sacerdotales.

Some from among the heads of fathers’ households gave to the work. The governor gave to the treasury one thousand darics of gold, fifty basins, and five hundred thirty priests’ garments.

Plusieurs des chefs de famille donnèrent au trésor de l’œuvre vingt mille dariques d’or et deux mille deux cents mines d’argent.

Some of the heads of fathers’ households gave into the treasury of the work twenty thousand darics of gold, and two thousand two hundred minas of silver.

Ce que le reste du peuple donna fut de vingt mille dariques d’or, deux mille mines d’argent et soixante-sept tuniques sacerdotales.

That which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand darics of gold, plus two thousand minas of silver, and sixty-seven priests’ garments.

C’est ainsi que les prêtres et les lévites, les chantres, les portiers, des gens du peuple, les Nathinéens et tout Israël s’établirent dans leurs villes.

So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all Israel, lived in their cities. When the seventh month had come, the children of Israel were in their cities.

Chapitre 8

Le septième mois étant arrivé, et les enfants d’Israël étant établis dans leurs villes, tout le peuple s’assembla comme un seul homme sur la place qui est devant la porte de l’Eau. Et ils dirent à Esdras, le scribe, d’apporter le livre de la loi de Moïse, que Yahweh a prescrite à Israël.

All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the wide place that was in front of the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.

Et le prêtre Esdras apporta la loi devant l’assemblée, les hommes et les femmes et tous ceux qui étaient assez intelligents pour l’entendre : c’était le premier jour du septième mois.

Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.

Il lut dans le livre, depuis le matin jusqu’au milieu du jour, sur la place qui est devant la porte de l’Eau, en présence des hommes et des femmes et de ceux qui étaient assez intelligents pour l’entendre ; tout le peuple prêtait l’oreille à la lecture du livre de la loi.

He read from it before the wide place that was in front of the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand. The ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.

Esdras le scribe se tenait sur une estrade de bois, dressée pour la circonstance ; et à côté de lui se tenaient, à sa droite, Mathatias, Séméïas, Anias, Urie, Helcias et Maasias ; et à sa gauche, Phadaïas, Misaël, Melchias, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacharie et Mosollam.

Ezra the scribe stood on a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

Esdras ouvrit le livre à la vue de tout le peuple, car il était élevé au-dessus de tout le peuple ; et, lorsqu’il l’eut ouvert, tout le peuple se tint debout.

Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people (for he was above all the people), and when he opened it, all the people stood up.

Esdras bénit Yahweh, le grand Dieu, et tout le peuple répondit en levant les mains : « Amen ! amen ! » Et ils s’inclinèrent et se prosternèrent devant Yahweh, le visage contre terre.

Then Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God. All the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” with the lifting up of their hands. They bowed their heads, and worshiped Yahweh with their faces to the ground.

Et Josué, Bani, Sérébias, Jamin, Accub, Sépthaï, Odias, Maasias, Célita, Azarias, Jozabed, Hanan, Phalaïas et les lévites instruisaient le peuple de la loi, et chacun restait à sa place.

Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law; and the people stayed in their place.

Ils lisaient distinctement dans le livre, dans la loi de Dieu, et ils en donnaient le sens, et l’on comprenait ce qui était lu.

They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.

Et Néhémie, le gouverneur, Esdras, le prêtre et le scribe, et les lévites qui instruisaient le peuple, dirent à tout le peuple : « Ce jour est saint pour Yahweh, votre Dieu ; ne soyez pas dans le deuil et dans les larmes. » Car tout le peuple pleurait en entendant les paroles de la loi.

Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people, “Today is holy to Yahweh your God. Don’t mourn, nor weep.” For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law.

Et Néhémie leur dit : « Allez, mangez des viandes grasses et buvez des liqueurs douces, et envoyez des portions à celui qui n’a rien de préparé, car ce jour est saint pour notre Seigneur ; ne vous affligez pas, car la joie en Yahweh est votre force. »

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”

Les lévites calmaient tout le peuple, en disant : « Taisez-vous ; car ce jour est saint ; ne vous affligez pas. »

So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Hold your peace, for the day is holy. Don’t be grieved.”

Et tout le peuple s’en alla pour manger et boire, envoyer des portions et se livrer à de grandes réjouissances. Car ils avaient compris les paroles qu’on leur avait fait connaître. 2. Chap. viii, 13-18 : La fête des Tabernacles ; continuation de l’étude de la Loi.

All the people went their way to eat, to drink, to send portions, and to celebrate, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

Le second jour, les chefs de famille de tout le peuple, les prêtres et les lévites s’assemblèrent auprès d’Esdras le scribe, afin de s’instruire plus complètement des paroles de la loi.

On the second day, the heads of fathers’ households of all the people, the priests, and the Levites were gathered together to Ezra the scribe, to study the words of the law.

Et ils trouvèrent écrit dans la loi que Yahweh avait prescrite par l’organe de Moïse, que les enfants d’Israël devaient habiter sous des tentes pendant la fête du septième mois,

They found written in the law how Yahweh had commanded by Moses that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month;

et qu’ils devaient faire entendre et publier une proclamation dans toutes leurs villes et à Jérusalem, en disant : « Allez à la montagne et rapportez des rameaux d’olivier, des rameaux d’olivier sauvage, des rameaux de myrte, des rameaux de palmier et des rameaux d’arbres touffus pour faire des tentes, selon qu’il est écrit. »

and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and get olive branches, branches of wild olive, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make temporary shelters, as it is written.”

Alors le peuple y alla, et ils rapportèrent des rameaux, et ils se firent des tentes chacun sur son toit, dans leurs cours, dans les parvis de la maison de Dieu, sur la place de la porte de l’Eau et sur la place de la porte d’Éphraïm.

So the people went out, and brought them, and made themselves temporary shelters, everyone on the roof of his house, in their courts, in the courts of God’s house, in the wide place of the water gate, and in the wide place of Ephraim’s gate.

Toute l’assemblée de ceux qui étaient revenus de la captivité fit des tentes et habita sous les tentes. Depuis les jours de Josué, fils de Nun, jusqu’à ce jour, les enfants d’Israël n’avaient rien fait de pareil. Et il y eut de très grandes réjouissances.

All the assembly of those who had come back out of the captivity made temporary shelters, and lived in the booths; for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the children of Israel had not done so. There was very great gladness.

On lut dans le livre de la loi de Dieu chaque jour, depuis le premier jour jusqu’au dernier. On célébra la fête pendant sept jours, et le huitième jour il y eut une assemblée solennelle, selon le rite prescrit.

Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. They kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.

Chapitre 9

Le vingt-quatrième jour du même mois, les enfants d’Israël s’assemblèrent pour un jeûne, revêtus de sacs, avec de la poussière sur la tête.

Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, with sackcloth, and dirt on them.

Ceux qui étaient de la race d’Israël, s’étant séparés de tous les fils de l’étranger, se tinrent debout et confessèrent leurs péchés et les iniquités de leurs pères.

The offspring of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

Lorsqu’ils se furent levés à leur place, ils lurent dans le livre de la loi de Yahweh, leur Dieu, pendant un quart de la journée, et, pendant un autre quart, ils confessèrent leurs péchés et adorèrent Yahweh, leur Dieu.

They stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of Yahweh their God a fourth part of the day; and a fourth part they confessed, and worshiped Yahweh their God.

Josué, Bani, Cedmiel, Sabanias, Bonni, Sarébias, Bani et Chanani, étant montés sur l’estrade des lévites, crièrent à haute voix vers Yahweh, leur Dieu.

Then Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani of the Levites stood up on the stairs, and cried with a loud voice to Yahweh their God.

Et les lévites Josué, Cedmiel, Bani, Hasebnias, Sérébias, Odaïas, Sébnias et Phathahias dirent : « Levez-vous, bénissez Yahweh, votre Dieu, d’éternité en éternité ! Que l’on bénisse votre nom glorieux, qui est élevé au-dessus de toute bénédiction et de toute louange !

Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, “Stand up and bless Yahweh your God from everlasting to everlasting! Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise!

C’est vous seul, Yahweh, vous, qui avez fait le ciel, le ciel des cieux et toute leur armée, la terre et tout ce qu’elle porte, la mer et tout ce qu’elle renferme ; c’est vous qui donnez la vie à toutes ces choses, et l’armée du ciel vous adore.

You are Yahweh, even you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their army, the earth and all things that are on it, the seas and all that is in them, and you preserve them all. The army of heaven worships you.

C’est vous, Yahweh, Dieu, qui avez choisi Abram, qui l’avez fait sortir d’Ur de Chaldée, et qui lui avez donné le nom d’Abraham.

You are Yahweh, the God who chose Abram, brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees, gave him the name of Abraham,

Vous avez trouvé son cœur fidèle devant vous et vous avez conclu avec lui l’alliance pour donner à sa postérité le pays des Chananéens, des Héthéens, des Amorhéens, des Phérézéens, des Jébuséens et des Gergeséens ; et vous avez tenu votre parole, car vous êtes juste. »

found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it to his offspring, and have performed your words; for you are righteous.

« Vous avez vu l’affliction de nos pères en Égypte, et vous avez entendu leurs cris près de la Mer rouge.

“You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the Red Sea,

Vous avez opéré des signes et des prodiges contre Pharaon, contre tous ses serviteurs et contre tout le peuple de son pays, parce que vous saviez qu’ils avaient agi avec arrogance à l’égard de nos pères et vous vous êtes fait un nom, comme on le voit encore aujourd’hui.

and showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, and against all his servants, and against all the people of his land; for you knew that they dealt proudly against them, and made a name for yourself, as it is today.

Vous avez fendu la mer devant eux, et ils ont passé à sec au milieu de la mer ; mais vous avez précipité dans les abîmes, comme une pierre dans les grandes eaux, ceux qui les poursuivaient.

You divided the sea before them, so that they went through the middle of the sea on the dry land; and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into the mighty waters.

Vous les avez guidés le jour par une colonne de nuée, et la nuit par une colonne de feu, pour éclairer devant eux la voie qu’ils devaient suivre.

Moreover, in a pillar of cloud you led them by day; and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way in which they should go.

Vous êtes descendu sur la montagne du Sinaï, vous avez parlé avec eux du haut du ciel, et vous leur avez donné des ordonnances justes, des lois de vérité, des préceptes et des commandements excellents.

“You also came down on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments,

Vous leur avez fait connaître votre saint sabbat, et vous leur avez prescrit par l’organe de Moïse, votre serviteur, des commandements, des préceptes et une loi.

and made known to them your holy Sabbath, and commanded them commandments, statutes, and a law, by Moses your servant,

Vous leur avez donné du ciel le pain pour leur faim, et vous avez fait sortir du rocher l’eau pour leur soif. Et vous leur avez dit d’entrer en possession du pays que vous aviez juré de leur donner. »

and gave them bread from the sky for their hunger, and brought water out of the rock for them for their thirst, and commanded them that they should go in to possess the land which you had sworn to give them.

« Mais nos pères, eux, se livrèrent à l’orgueil, raidirent leur cou, et n’écoutèrent pas vos commandements.

“But they and our fathers behaved proudly, hardened their neck, didn’t listen to your commandments,

Ils refusèrent d’écouter, et ils ne se souvinrent pas de vos merveilles, que vous aviez faites en leur faveur. Ils raidirent leur cou et, dans leur opiniâtreté, ils se donnèrent un chef pour retourner à leur servitude. Mais vous êtes un Dieu prêt au pardon, clément et miséricordieux, lent à la colère et riche en bonté, et vous ne les avez pas abandonnés.

and refused to obey. They weren’t mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and didn’t forsake them.

Même lorsqu’ils se firent un veau en fonte et dirent : Voici ton Dieu qui t’a fait sortir d’Égypte, et qu’ils se livrèrent contre vous à de grands blasphèmes,

Yes, when they had made themselves a molten calf, and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed awful blasphemies;

selon votre grande miséricorde, vous ne les avez pas abandonnés dans le désert ; et la colonne de nuée ne s’écarta point d’auprès d’eux, les guidant le jour dans leur chemin, ni la colonne de feu, les éclairant la nuit dans la route qu’ils devaient suivre.

yet you in your manifold mercies didn’t forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud didn’t depart from over them by day, to lead them in the way; neither did the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way in which they should go.

Vous leur avez donné votre bon esprit pour les rendre prudents ; vous n’avez point refusé votre manne à leur bouche, et vous leur avez fourni de l’eau pour leur soif.

You gave also your good Spirit to instruct them, and didn’t withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst.

Pendant quarante ans vous avez pourvu à leur entretien dans le désert, et ils ne manquèrent de rien ; leurs vêtements ne s’usèrent point et leurs pieds ne s’enflèrent point. »

“Yes, forty years you sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing. Their clothes didn’t grow old, and their feet didn’t swell.

« Vous leur avez livré des royaumes et des peuples, dont vous partageâtes entre eux les territoires ; et ils possédèrent le pays de Séhon, le pays du roi d’Hésébon, et le pays d’Og, roi de Basan.

Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you allotted according to their portions. So they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

Vous avez multiplié leurs fils comme les étoiles du ciel, et vous les avez amenés dans le pays dont vous aviez dit à leurs pères qu’ils y entreraient pour en prendre possession.

You also multiplied their children as the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land concerning which you said to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.

Et leurs fils vinrent prendre possession du pays, et vous avez humilié devant eux les habitants du pays, les Chananéens, et vous les avez livrés entre leurs mains, ainsi que les rois et les peuples du pays, pour qu’ils les traitassent à leur gré.

“So the children went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they pleased.

Ils s’emparèrent de villes fortifiées et de terres fertiles ; ils possédèrent des maisons remplies de toutes sortes de biens, des citernes creusées, des vignes, des oliviers et des arbres fruitiers en abondance. Ils mangèrent, ils se rassasièrent, ils s’engraissèrent et vécurent dans les délices par votre grande bonté. »

They took fortified cities and a rich land, and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns dug out, vineyards, and olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate, were filled, became fat, and delighted themselves in your great goodness.

« Néanmoins ils furent rebelles et se révoltèrent contre vous. Ils jetèrent votre loi derrière leur dos, ils tuèrent vos prophètes qui rendaient témoignage contre eux, pour les ramener vers vous, et ils se livrèrent envers vous à de grands blasphèmes.

“Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against you, cast your law behind their back, killed your prophets that testified against them to turn them again to you, and they committed awful blasphemies.

Alors vous les abandonnâtes entre les mains de leurs oppresseurs, qui les opprimèrent. Mais, au temps de leur oppression, ils crièrent vers vous, et vous, vous les entendîtes du haut du ciel et, dans votre grande miséricorde, vous leur donnâtes des sauveurs qui les sauvèrent de la main de leurs oppresseurs.

Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them. In the time of their trouble, when they cried to you, you heard from heaven; and according to your manifold mercies you gave them saviors who saved them out of the hands of their adversaries.

Quand ils eurent du repos, ils firent de nouveau le mal devant vous, et vous les abandonnâtes entre les mains de leurs ennemis, qui dominèrent sur eux. Mais ils crièrent encore vers vous, et vous, vous les entendîtes du haut du ciel et, dans votre grande miséricorde, vous les délivrâtes plusieurs fois.

But after they had rest, they did evil again before you; therefore left you them in the hands of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them; yet when they returned, and cried to you, you heard from heaven; and many times you delivered them according to your mercies,

Vous rendîtes témoignage contre eux, pour les ramener à votre loi, et eux, persévérant dans l’orgueil, n’écoutèrent point vos commandements ; ils transgressèrent vos ordonnances, bien que celui qui les met en pratique trouve en elles la vie ; ils présentèrent une épaule rebelle, ils raidirent leur cou et ils n’écoutèrent point.

and testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law. Yet they were arrogant, and didn’t listen to your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances (which if a man does, he shall live in them), turned their backs, stiffened their neck, and would not hear.

Vous usâtes de patience envers eux pendant de nombreuses années ; vous rendîtes témoignage contre eux par votre esprit, par l’organe de vos prophètes, et ils n’écoutèrent point. Alors vous les livrâtes entre les mains des peuples des pays.

Yet many years you put up with them, and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet would they not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.

Mais, dans votre grande miséricorde, vous ne les avez pas anéantis et vous ne les avez pas délaissés, car vous êtes un Dieu clément et miséricordieux. »

“Nevertheless in your manifold mercies you did not make a full end of them, nor forsake them; for you are a gracious and merciful God.

« Et maintenant, ô notre Dieu, Dieu grand, puissant et redoutable, vous qui maintenez l’alliance et la miséricorde, ne regardez pas comme peu de chose toutes les souffrances qui nous ont atteints, nous, nos rois, nos chefs, nos prêtres, nos prophètes, nos pères et tout votre peuple, depuis le temps des rois d’Assyrie jusqu’à ce jour.

Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness, don’t let all the travail seem little before you, that has come on us, on our kings, on our princes, on our priests, on our prophets, on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria to this day.

Vous avez été juste dans tout ce qui nous est arrivé, car vous avez agi avec fidélité ; mais nous, nous avons fait le mal.

However you are just in all that has come on us; for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly.

Nos rois, nos chefs, nos prêtres et nos pères n’ont pas mis en pratique votre loi, et ils n’ont été attentifs ni à vos commandements ni aux témoignages que vous rendiez contre eux.

Also our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have not kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies with which you testified against them.

Dans leur royaume, au milieu des nombreux bienfaits que vous leur accordiez, dans le pays vaste et fertile que vous leur aviez livré, ils ne vous ont pas servi, et ils ne se sont pas détournés de leurs œuvres mauvaises.

For they have not served you in their kingdom, and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and rich land which you gave before them. They did not turn from their wicked works.

Et voici qu’aujourd’hui nous sommes esclaves ! Voici que nous sommes esclaves sur la terre que vous avez donnée à nos pères pour en manger les fruits et jouir de ses biens !

“Behold, we are servants today, and as for the land that you gave to our fathers to eat its fruit and its good, behold, we are servants in it.

Elle multiplie ses produits pour les rois que vous avez établis sur nous, à cause de nos péchés. Ils disposent à leur gré de nos corps et de notre bétail, et nous sommes dans une grande détresse. »

It yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. Also they have power over our bodies and over our livestock, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

Yet for all this, we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, our Levites, and our priests, seal it.”

Chapitre 10

En conséquence de tout cela, nous contractâmes un engagement sacré que nous mîmes par écrit, et nos chefs, nos lévites et nos prêtres y apposèrent leur sceau.

Now those who sealed were: Nehemiah the governor, the son of Hacaliah, and Zedekiah,

Voici ceux qui apposèrent leur sceau : Néhémie, le gouverneur, fils de Helchias.

Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah,

— Sédécias, Saraïas, Azarias, Jérémie,

Pashhur, Amariah, Malchijah,

The priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes. The Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes to the house of our God, to the rooms, into the treasure house.

The princes of the people lived in Jerusalem. The rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts in the other cities.

By the spring gate, and straight before them, they went up by the stairs of David’s city, at the ascent of the wall, above David’s house, even to the water gate eastward.

The other company of those who gave thanks went to meet them, and I after them, with the half of the people, on the wall, above the tower of the furnaces, even to the wide wall,

puis, d’au dessus de la porte d’Ephraïm, de la Vieille porte, de la porte des Poissons, de la tour de Hananéel et de la tour de Méa, jusqu’à la porte des Brebis ; et l’on s’arrêta à la porte de la Prison.

and above the gate of Ephraim, and by the old gate, and by the fish gate, and the tower of Hananel, and the tower of Hammeah, even to the sheep gate: and they stood still in the gate of the guard.

Les deux chœurs s’arrêtèrent dans la maison de Dieu, ainsi que moi et la moitié des magistrats qui étaient avec moi,

So the two companies of those who gave thanks in God’s house stood, and I, and the half of the rulers with me;

et les prêtres Éliacim, Maasias, Miamin, Michée, Élioénaï, Zacharie, Ananie, avec des trompettes,

and the priests, Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with trumpets;

et Maasias, Séméïas, Éléazar, Azzi, Johanan, Melchias, Élam et Ézer. Et les chantres se firent entendre, avec Jezraïas, leur chef.

and Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. The singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their overseer.

Ils offrirent ce jour-là de grands sacrifices et se livrèrent aux réjouissances, car Dieu leur avait donné un grand sujet de joie. Les femmes et les enfants se réjouirent aussi, et les cris de joie de Jérusalem furent entendus au loin. 9. Chap. xii, 44-47 : Revenus des lévites.

They offered great sacrifices that day, and rejoiced; for God had made them rejoice with great joy; and the women and the children also rejoiced; so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even far away.

En ce temps-là, on établit des hommes préposés aux chambres qui servaient de magasins pour les offrandes prélevées, les prémices et les dîmes, et on les chargea d’y recueillir, du territoire des villes, les portions assignées par la loi aux prêtres et aux lévites ; car Juda se réjouissait de voir à leur poste les prêtres et les lévites,

On that day were men appointed over the rooms for the treasures, for the wave offerings, for the first fruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them, according to the fields of the cities, the portions appointed by the law for the priests and Levites; for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites who waited.

observant le service de leur Dieu, et le service des purifications ; et de même, les chantres et les portiers, selon l’ordonnance de David et de Salomon, son fils.

They performed the duty of their God, and the duty of the purification, and so did the singers and the gatekeepers, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.

Car autrefois, dans les jours de David et d’Asaph, le chef des chantres, il y avait des chants de louange et d’actions de grâces en l’honneur de Dieu.

For in the days of David and Asaph of old there was a chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.

Tout Israël, dans les jours de Zorobabel et de Néhémie, donnait jour par jour les portions des chantres et des portiers ; on donnait aux lévites les saintes offrandes, et les lévites en donnaient leur part aux fils d’Aaron. _____________

All Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the gatekeepers, as every day required; and they set apart that which was for the Levites; and the Levites set apart that which was for the sons of Aaron.

Chapitre 13

En ce temps-là, on lut aux oreilles du peuple dans le livre de Moïse, et l’on y trouva écrit que l’Ammonite et le Moabite ne devaient jamais entrer dans l’assemblée de Dieu,

On that day they read in the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and it was found written in it that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,

parce qu’ils n’étaient pas venus au-devant des enfants d’Israël avec du pain et de l’eau, et parce qu’ils avaient payé contre eux Balaam pour qu’il les maudit ; mais notre Dieu avait changé la malédiction en bénédiction.

because they didn’t meet the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them; however our God turned the curse into a blessing.

Lorsqu’on eut entendu cette loi, on sépara d’Israël tous les étrangers. 2. Chap. xiii, 4-9 : Expulsion de Tobie.

It came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated all the mixed multitude from Israel.

Avant cela, le prêtre Éliasib, qui avait l’intendance des chambres de la maison de notre Dieu et qui était allié de Tobie,

Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah,

avait disposé pour ce dernier une grande chambre où l’on mettait auparavant les offrandes, l’encens, les ustensiles, la dîme du blé, du vin nouveau et de l’huile, la taxe des lévites, des chantres et des portiers, et ce qui était prélevé pour les prêtres.

had prepared for him a great room, where before they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, the singers, and the gatekeepers; and the wave offerings for the priests.

Quand tout cela eut lieu, je n’étais point à Jérusalem ; car, la trente deuxième année d’Artaxerxès, roi de Babylone, j’étais retourné près du roi. Au bout de quelque temps, j’obtins du roi la permission

But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king; and after some days I asked leave of the king,

de revenir à Jérusalem, et je m’aperçus du mal qu’avait fait Eliasib, en faveur de Tobie, en arrangeant une chambre pour lui dans les parvis de la maison de Dieu.

and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of God’s house.

J’en éprouvai une grande douleur, et je jetai hors de la chambre tous les meubles de la demeure de Tobie.

It grieved me severely. Therefore I threw all Tobiah’s household stuff out of the room.

Puis j’ordonnai qu’on purifiât les chambres, et j’y replaçai les ustensiles de la maison de Dieu, les offrandes et l’encens. 3. Chap. xiii, 10-14 : Mesures en vue d’assurer les revenus des lévites.

Then I commanded, and they cleansed the rooms. I brought into them the vessels of God’s house, with the meal offerings and the frankincense again.

J’appris aussi que les portions des lévites n’avaient pas été livrées, et que les lévites et les chantres chargés du service s’étaient enfuis chacun dans ses terres.

I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had each fled to his field.

J’adressai des réprimandes aux magistrats, et je dis : « Pourquoi la maison de Dieu est-elle abandonnée ? » Et je rassemblai les lévites et les chantres, et je les remis à leur poste.

Then I contended with the rulers, and said, “Why is God’s house forsaken?” I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

Alors tout Juda apporta dans les magasins la dîme du blé, du vin nouveau et de l’huile.

Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the treasuries.

Je confiai l’intendance des magasins à Sélémias, le prêtre, à Sadoc, le scribe, et à Phadaïas, l’un des lévites, et je leur adjoignis Hanan, fils de Zachur, fils de Mathanias, parce qu’ils étaient reconnus fidèles. C’était à eux de faire les distributions à leurs frères.

I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute to their brothers.

Souvenez-vous de moi, ô mon Dieu, à cause de cela, et n’effacez pas de votre mémoire les actes de piété que j’ai faits pour la maison de Dieu et pour son service ! 4. Chap. xiii, 15-22 : Répression de la violation du sabbat. — Le cas des Juifs (xiii, 15) ; les marchands étrangers (xiii, 16-18). Fermeture et garde des portes pendant le sabbat (xiii, 19-22).

Remember me, my God, concerning this, and don’t wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances.

En ce temps là, je vis en Juda des hommes qui foulaient au pressoir pendant le sabbat, qui rentraient des gerbes, chargeaient sur des ânes même du vin, des raisins, des figues et toutes sortes de fardeaux, et qui les amenaient à Jérusalem le jour du sabbat ; et je leur donnai un avertissement lorsqu’ils vendaient leurs denrées.

In those days saw I in Judah some men treading wine presses on the Sabbath, bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys; also with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day; and I testified against them in the day in which they sold food.

De même les Tyriens demeurant à Jérusalem, apportaient du poisson et toutes sortes de marchandises, et les vendaient, le jour du sabbat, aux fils de Juda et dans Jérusalem.

Some men of Tyre also lived there, who brought in fish and all kinds of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

J’adressai des réprimandes aux grands de Juda et je leur dis : « Quelle est cette mauvaise action que vous faites, en profanant le jour du sabbat ?

Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the Sabbath day?

N’est-ce pas ainsi qu’ont agi vos pères, et n’est-ce pas à cause de cela que notre Dieu a fait venir tous ces malheurs sur nous et sur cette ville ? Et vous, vous augmentez encore sa colère contre Israël en profanant le sabbat !… »

Didn’t your fathers do thus, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us, and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

Ensuite, dès qu’il fit sombre aux entrées de Jérusalem, avant le sabbat, j’ordonnai de fermer les portes, et j’ordonnai qu’on ne les ouvrit qu’après le sabbat. De plus, je plaçai aux portes quelques-uns de mes gens afin qu’aucun fardeau n’entrât le jour du sabbat.

It came to pass that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, so that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day.

Alors les marchands et les vendeurs de toutes sortes de denrées passèrent la nuit une fois ou deux hors de Jérusalem.

So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares camped outside of Jerusalem once or twice.

Je les avertis, et je leur dis : « Pourquoi passez-vous la nuit devant la muraille ? Si vous le faites encore, je mettrai la main sur vous. » Depuis ce temps-là, ils ne vinrent plus pendant le sabbat.

Then I testified against them, and said to them, “Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they didn’t come on the Sabbath.

Et j’ordonnai aux lévites de se purifier et de venir garder les portes pour sanctifier le jour du sabbat. Souvenez-vous encore de moi, ô mon Dieu, à cause de cela, et épargnez-moi selon votre grande miséricorde ! 5. Chap. xiii, 23-27 : Répression des mariages avec les étrangers.

I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember to me, my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness.

En ce même temps, je vis aussi des Juifs qui avaient établi chez eux des femmes azotiennes, ammonites, moabites.

In those days I also saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab;

La moitié de leurs fils parlaient l’azotien sans pouvoir parler judéen ; et de même pour la langue de tel et tel autre peuple.

and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.

Je leur adressai des réprimandes et je les maudis ; j’en frappai plusieurs, je leur arrachai les cheveux et je les adjurai au nom de Dieu, en disant : « Vous ne donnerez point vos filles à leurs fils et vous ne prendrez point de leurs filles pour vos fils ou pour vous.

I contended with them, and cursed them, and struck certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

N’est-ce pas en cela qu’a péché Salomon, roi d’Israël ? Il n’y avait pas de roi semblable à lui parmi la multitude des nations, il était aimé de son Dieu et Dieu l’avait établi roi sur tout Israël ; mais les femmes étrangères l’entraînèrent, lui aussi, dans le péché.

Didn’t Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin.

Fallait-il donc apprendre à votre sujet que vous commettez ce grand crime et que vous péchez contre notre Dieu, en établissant chez vous des femmes étrangères ? » 6. Chap. xiii, 28-31 : Autres réformes.

Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?”

Un des fils de Joïada, fils d’Eliasib, le grand prêtre, était gendre de Sanaballat le Horonite ; je le chassai loin de moi.

One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I chased him from me.

Souvenez-vous d’eux, ô mon Dieu, à propos de cette profanation du sacerdoce et des obligations sacrées des prêtres et des lévites !

Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.

Je les purifiai de tout ce qui était étranger, et je remis en vigueur les règlements concernent les prêtres et les lévites, chacun dans son ministère,

Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners, and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work;

et ce qui concernait l’offrande du bois à des époques déterminées, ainsi que les prémices. Souvenez-vous-en en ma faveur, ô mon Dieu, pour mon bien !

and for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the first fruits. Remember me, my God, for good.
