The return from exile and the rebuilding of the temple

The first half of the post-exilic Ezra–Nehemiah narrative: the return of the Judean exiles under the Persian decree of Cyrus, the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple, and the reforms led by the priest-scribe Ezra concerning intermarriage and Torah observance.

Chapitre 1

La première année de Cyrus, roi de Perse, pour accomplir la parole de Yahweh, qu’il avait dite par la bouche de Jérémie, Yahweh excita l’esprit de Cyrus, roi de Perse, qui fit faire de vive voix et par écrit cette proclamation dans tout son royaume :

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that Yahweh’s word by Jeremiah’s mouth might be accomplished, Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

« Ainsi dit Cyrus, roi de Perse : Yahweh, le Dieu du ciel, m’a donné tous les royaumes de la terre, et il m’a dit de lui bâtir une maison à Jérusalem, qui est en Juda.

“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, ‘Yahweh, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he has commanded me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

Qui d’entre vous est de son peuple ? Que son Dieu soit avec lui, et qu’il monte à Jérusalem, qui est en Juda, et bâtisse la maison de Yahweh, Dieu d’Israël ! C’est le Dieu qui est à Jérusalem.

Whoever there is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of Yahweh, the God of Israel (he is God), which is in Jerusalem.

Qu’à tous ceux qui restent de Juda, en tous les séjours où ils demeurent, les gens de ce séjour viennent en aide par de l’argent, de l’or, des effets et du bétail, avec des dons volontaires, pour la maison de Dieu qui est à Jérusalem. »

Whoever is left, in any place where he lives, let the men of his place help him with silver, with gold, with goods, and with animals, besides the freewill offering for God’s house which is in Jerusalem.’”

Les chefs de famille de Juda et de Benjamin, les prêtres et les lévites, tous ceux dont Dieu excita l’esprit, se levèrent pour aller bâtir la maison de Yahweh, qui est à Jérusalem.

Then the heads of fathers’ households of Judah and Benjamin, the priests, and the Levites, all whose spirit God had stirred to go up rose up to build Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem.

Tous leurs voisins les aidèrent avec des objets d’argent, de l’or, des effets, du bétail et des choses précieuses, sans compter toutes les offrandes volontaires.

All those who were around them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, with animals, and with precious things, besides all that was willingly offered.

Le roi Cyrus enleva les ustensiles de la maison de Yahweh, que Nabuchodonosor avait enlevés de Jérusalem et placés dans la maison de son dieu.

Also Cyrus the king brought out the vessels of Yahweh’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought out of Jerusalem, and had put in the house of his gods;

Cyrus, roi de Perse, les confia aux mains de Mithridate, le trésorier, qui les transmit en les comptant à Sassabasar, le prince de Juda.

even those, Cyrus king of Persia brought out by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and counted them out to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.

En voici le nombre : trente bassins d’or, mille bassins d’argent, vingt-neuf couteaux,

This is the number of them: thirty platters of gold, one thousand platters of silver, twenty-nine knives,

trente coupes d’or, quatre cent dix coupes d’argent de second ordre, et mille autres ustensiles.

thirty bowls of gold, four hundred ten silver bowls of a second sort, and one thousand other vessels.

Tous les objets d’or et d’argent étaient au nombre de cinq mille quatre cents. Sassabasar emporta le tout, lorsque les exilés furent ramenée de Babylone à Jérusalem.

All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand four hundred. Sheshbazzar brought all these up when the captives were brought up from Babylon to Jerusalem.

Chapitre 2

Voici les gens de la province qui revinrent de l’exil, — ceux que Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, avait emmenés captifs à Babylone, et qui retournèrent à Jérusalem et en Juda, chacun dans sa ville, —

Now these are the children of the province, who went up out of the captivity of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away to Babylon, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, everyone to his city;

The children of Parosh, two thousand one hundred seventy-two.

All the temple servants, and the children of Solomon’s servants, were three hundred ninety-two.

Voici ceux qui partirent de Thel-Méla, Thel-Harsa, Chérub, Addon, Emmer, et qui ne purent pas faire connaître leur maison paternelle et leur race, pour montrer qu’ils étaient d’Israël :

These were those who went up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer; but they could not show their fathers’ houses, and their offspring, whether they were of Israel:

les fils de Dalaïas, les fils de Tobie, les fils de Nécoda, six cent cinquante-deux.

the children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, the children of Nekoda, six hundred fifty-two.

Et parmi les fils des prêtres : les fils de Hobia, les fils d’Accos, les fils de Berzellaï, qui avait pris pour femme une des filles de Berzellaï, le Galaadite, et fut appelé de leur nom.

Of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Hakkoz, and the children of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name.

Ils cherchèrent leur titre attestant leurs généalogies, mais on ne le trouva point ; ils furent déclarés impurs et exclus du sacerdoce,

These sought their place among those who were registered by genealogy, but they were not found: therefore were they deemed disqualified and removed from the priesthood.

et le gouverneur leur interdit de manger des choses très saintes, jusqu’à ce qu’un prêtre se levât pour consulter Dieu par l’Urim et le Thummim.

The governor told them that they should not eat of the most holy things until a priest stood up to serve with Urim and with Thummim.

L’assemblée tout entière était de quarante-deux mille trois cent soixante personnes,

The whole assembly together was forty-two thousand three hundred sixty,

sans compter leurs serviteurs et leurs servantes, qui étaient au nombre de sept mille trois cent trente-sept ; parmi eux se trouvaient deux cents chanteurs et chanteuses.

besides their male servants and their female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven; and they had two hundred singing men and singing women.

Ils avaient sept cent trente-six chevaux, deux cent quarante-cinq mulets,

Their horses were seven hundred thirty-six; their mules, two hundred forty-five;

quatre cent trente-cinq chameaux et six mille sept cent vingt ânes.

their camels, four hundred thirty-five; their donkeys, six thousand seven hundred twenty.

Plusieurs des chefs de famille, en arrivant à la maison de Yahweh, qui est à Jérusalem, firent des offrandes volontaires pour la maison de Dieu, afin qu’on la relevât à sa place.

Some of the heads of fathers’ households, when they came to Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem, offered willingly for God’s house to set it up in its place.

Ils donnèrent au trésor de l’œuvre, selon leurs moyens, soixante et un mille dariques d’or, cinq mille mines d’argent, et cent tuniques sacerdotales.

They gave according to their ability into the treasury of the work sixty-one thousand darics of gold, and five thousand minas of silver, and one hundred priests’ garments.

C’est ainsi que les prêtres et les lévites, des gens du peuple, les chantres, les portiers et les Nathinéens s’établirent dans leurs villes ; et tout Israël habita dans ses villes

So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, lived in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.

Chapitre 3

Le septième mois étant arrivé, et les enfants d’Israël étant établis dans les villes, le peuple s’assembla comme un seul homme à Jérusalem.

When the seventh month had come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.

Josué, fils de Josédec, avec ses frères, les prêtres, et Zorobabel, fils de Salathiel, avec ses frères, se levèrent et bâtirent l’autel du Dieu d’Israël pour y offrir des holocaustes, selon ce qui est écrit dans la loi de Moïse, l’homme de Dieu.

Then Jeshua the son of Jozadak stood up with his brothers the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and his brothers, and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.

Ils établirent l’autel sur ses anciens fondements, car ils étaient dans la terreur devant les peuples du pays, et ils y offrirent des holocaustes à Yahweh, les holocaustes du matin et du soir.

In spite of their fear because of the peoples of the surrounding lands, they set the altar on its base; and they offered burnt offerings on it to Yahweh, even burnt offerings morning and evening.

Ils célébrèrent la fête des Tabernacles, comme il est écrit, et ils offrirent jour par jour les holocaustes, selon le nombre prescrit par la loi pour chaque jour.

They kept the feast of tents, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the ordinance, as the duty of every day required;

and afterward the continual burnt offering, the offerings of the new moons, of all the set feasts of Yahweh that were consecrated, and of everyone who willingly offered a freewill offering to Yahweh.

Dès le premier jour du septième mois, ils avaient commencé à offrir des holocaustes à Yahweh, mais les fondements du temple de Yahweh n’étaient pas encore posés.

From the first day of the seventh month, they began to offer burnt offerings to Yahweh; but the foundation of Yahweh’s temple was not yet laid.

On donna de l’argent aux tailleurs de pierres et aux charpentiers ; on donna aussi des vivres, des boissons et de l’huile aux Sidoniens et aux Tyriens, pour qu’ils amenassent par mer jusqu’à Joppé des bois de cèdre du Liban, suivant l’autorisation qu’on avait eue de Cyrus, roi de Perse.

They also gave money to the masons, and to the carpenters. They also gave food, drink, and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea, to Joppa, according to the grant that they had from Cyrus King of Persia.

La seconde année de leur arrivée à la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, le second mois, Zorobabel, fils de Salathiel, et Josué, fils de Josédec, avec le reste de leurs frères, les prêtres et les lévites, et tous ceux qui étaient revenus de la captivité à Jérusalem, se mirent à l’œuvre et établirent les lévites de vingt ans et au-dessus pour diriger les travaux de la maison de Yahweh.

Now in the second year of their coming to God’s house at Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites, and all those who had come out of the captivity to Jerusalem, began the work and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to have the oversight of the work of Yahweh’s house.

Josué, avec ses fils et ses frères, Cedmiel, avec ses fils, fils de Juda, se disposèrent unanimement à diriger ceux qui travaillaient à l’œuvre, dans la maison du Dieu ; de même les fils de Hénadad, avec leurs fils et leurs frères, c’étaient tous des lévites.

Then Jeshua stood with his sons and his brothers, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to have the oversight of the workmen in God’s house: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brothers the Levites.

Lorsque les ouvriers posèrent les fondements du temple de Yahweh, on fit assister les prêtres en costume, avec les trompettes, et les lévites, fils d’Asaph, avec les cymbales, pour célébrer Yahweh, d’après les ordonnances de David, roi d’Israël.

When the builders laid the foundation of Yahweh’s temple, they set the priests in their clothing with trumpets, with the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise Yahweh, according to the directions of David king of Israel.

Ils se mirent à célébrer et à louer Yahweh : » Car il est bon, car sa miséricorde pour Israël subsiste à jamais ! » Et tout le peuple poussait de grands cris de joie pour célébrer Yahweh, parce qu’on posait les fondements de la maison de Yahweh.

They sang to one another in praising and giving thanks to Yahweh, “For he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever toward Israel.” All the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised Yahweh, because the foundation of Yahweh’s house had been laid.

Beaucoup de prêtres et de lévites, et de chefs de famille âgés, qui avaient vu la première maison, pleuraient à haute voix, pendant qu’on posait sous leurs yeux les fondements de cette maison ; et beaucoup poussaient des cris de joie et d’allégresse.

But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ households, the old men who had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice. Many also shouted aloud for joy,

Et le peuple ne pouvait distinguer le bruit des cris de joie d’avec celui des gémissements du peuple, car le peuple poussait de grands cris, dont le son s’entendait au loin.

so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard far away.

Chapitre 4

Lorsque les ennemis de Juda et de Benjamin apprirent que les fils de la captivité bâtissaient un temple à Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël,

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple to Yahweh, the God of Israel;

ils vinrent auprès de Zorobabel et des chefs de famille, et leur dirent : » Laissez-nous bâtir avec vous ; car, comme vous, nous honorons votre Dieu, et nous lui offrons des sacrifices depuis le temps d’Asarhaddon, roi d’Assyrie, qui nous a fait monter ici. »

they came near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as you do; and we have been sacrificing to him since the days of Esar Haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.”

Mais Zorobabel, Josué et les autres chefs des familles d’Israël leur répondirent : » Il ne convient pas que vous et nous, nous bâtissions ensemble la maison de notre Dieu ; mais nous la bâtirons nous seuls à Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, comme nous l’a ordonné le roi Cyrus, roi de Perse. »

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel, said to them, “You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to Yahweh, the God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”

Alors le peuple du pays se mit à décourager le peuple de Juda, l’intimidant dans son travail.

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building.

They hired counselors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Et sous le règne d’Assuérus, au commencement de son règne, ils écrivirent une lettre d’accusation contre les habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem. 2. In the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

Et du temps d’Artaxerxès, Bésélam, Mithridate, Tabéel et le reste de leurs compagnons écrivirent à Artaxerxès, roi de Perse ; le texte de la lettre fut écrit en caractère araméen et traduit en araméen.

In the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in Syrian, and delivered in the Syrian language.

Réhum, gouverneur, et Samsaï, secrétaire, écrivirent à Artaxerxès, au sujet de Jérusalem, une lettre ainsi conçue :

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows,

« Alors Réhum, gouverneur, Samsaï, secrétaire, et le reste de leurs compagnons, ceux de Din, d’Apharsathach, de Terphal, d’Apharsa, d’Erchua, de Babylone, de Suse, de Déha, d’Elam,

then Rehum the chancellor, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,

et le reste des peuples que le grand et illustre Asnaphar a transportés et établis dans la ville de Samarie et autres lieux d’au delà du fleuve, etc. »

and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar brought over, and set in the city of Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River, and so forth, wrote.

This is the copy of the letter that they sent: To King Artaxerxes, From your servants the men beyond the River.

« Que le roi sache que les Juifs qui sont montés de chez toi parmi nous sont venus à Jérusalem ; ils rebâtissent la ville rebelle et méchante, en relèvent les murs et en restaurent les fondements.

Be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and bad city, and have finished the walls, and repaired the foundations.

Que le roi sache donc que, si cette ville est rebâtie et si ses murs sont relevés, ils ne paieront ni impôt, ni tribut, ni droit de passage, ce qui causera un dommage aux rois.

Be it known now to the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings.

Or, comme nous mangeons le sel du palais et qu’il ne nous paraît pas convenable de voir mépriser le roi, nous envoyons au roi des informations à ce sujet.

Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not appropriate for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and informed the king,

Qu’on fasse des recherches dans le livre des annales de tes pères, et tu trouveras dans le livre des annales et tu sauras que cette ville est une ville rebelle, causant des dommages aux rois et aux provinces, et qu’on s’y livre à la révolte depuis les temps anciens. C’est pour cela que cette ville a été détruite.

that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will see in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have started rebellions within it in the past. That is why this city was destroyed.

Nous faisons savoir au roi que, si cette ville est rebâtie et si ses murs sont relevés, par cela même tu ne posséderas plus rien au delà du fleuve. »

We inform the king that, if this city is built and the walls finished, then you will have no possession beyond the River.

Le roi envoya cette réponse à Réhum, gouverneur, à Samsaï, secrétaire, et au reste de leurs compagnons, demeurant à Samarie et aux autres lieux d’au-delà du fleuve : « Salut, etc.

Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions who live in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace.

« La lettre que vous nous avez envoyée a été lue distinctement devant moi.

The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me.

J’ai donné un ordre, et on a fait des recherches, et l’on a trouvé que, dès les temps anciens, cette ville s’est soulevée contre les rois et qu’on s’y est livré à la sédition et à la révolte.

I decreed, and search has been made, and it was found that this city has made insurrection against kings in the past, and that rebellion and revolts have been made in it.

Il y eut à Jérusalem des rois puissants, maîtres de tout le pays d’au delà du fleuve ; et on leur payait impôt, tribut et droit de passage.

There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll, was paid to them.

En conséquence, donnez ordre de faire cesser les travaux de ces gens, afin que cette ville ne se rebâtisse point, jusqu’à ce que je donne un ordre à ce sujet.

Make a decree now to cause these men to cease, and that this city not be built, until a decree is made by me.

Gardez-vous de mettre en cela de la négligence, de peur que le mal n’augmente au détriment des rois. »

Be careful that you not be slack doing so. Why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

Alors, dès que la copie de la lettre du roi Artaxerxès eut été lue devant Réhum, Samsaï, secrétaire, et leurs compagnons, ils se rendirent avec hâte à Jérusalem vers les Juifs, et il leur firent cesser le travail par violence et par force. III. — REPRISE ET ACHÈVEMENT DES TRAVAUX DU TEMPLE SOUS DARIUS. [IV, 24 — 6, 22.] 1. Chap. iv, 24 — v, 2 : Reprise des travaux.

Then when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force of arms.

Alors s’arrêta l’ouvrage de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, et il fut interrompu jusqu’à la seconde année du règne de Darius, roi de Perse.

Then work stopped on God’s house which is at Jerusalem. It stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Chapitre 5

Les prophètes Aggée, le prophète, et Zacharie, fils d’Addo prophétisèrent aux Juifs qui étaient en Juda et à Jérusalem, au nom du Dieu d’Israël, qui était sur eux.

Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem. They prophesied to them in the name of the God of Israel.

Alors Zorobabel, fils de Salathiel, et Josué, fils de Josédec, se levèrent et recommencèrent à bâtir la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, et avec eux étaient les prophètes de Dieu qui les assistaient. 2. Chap. v, 3-17 : Rapport adressé à Darius. — Visite et enquête du satrape et de ses compagnons (v, 3-5). Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak rose up and began to build God’s house which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them.

Dans le même temps, Thathanaï, gouverneur d’au delà du fleuve, Stharbuzanaï et leurs compagnons vinrent les trouver et leur parlèrent ainsi : » Qui vous a donné l’autorisation de bâtir cette maison et de relever ces murs ? »

At the same time Tattenai, the governor beyond the River came to them, with Shetharbozenai, and their companions, and asked them, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?”

Alors nous leur parlâmes en leur disant les noms des hommes qui construisaient cet édifice.

They also asked for the names of the men were who were making this building.

Mais l’œil de leur Dieu était sur les anciens des Juifs ; et on ne leur fit pas cesser les travaux jusqu’à ce que le rapport fût parvenu à Darius et que revint une lettre à ce sujet.

But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, until the matter should come to Darius, and an answer should be returned by letter concerning it.

Copie de la lettre qu’envoyèrent au roi Darius Thathanaï, gouverneur d’au-delà du fleuve, Stharbuzanaï et leurs compagnons d’Arphasach, demeurant au delà du fleuve.

The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king follows.

Ils lui envoyèrent un rapport, et voici ce qui y était écrit : « Au roi Darius, salut parfait !

They sent a letter to him, in which was written: To Darius the king, all peace.

Que le roi sache que nous sommes allés dans la province de Juda, à la maison du grand Dieu. Elle se construit en pierres énormes, et le bois se pose dans les murs ; ce travail est poussé avec diligence et prospère sous leurs mains.

Be it known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is built with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on with diligence and prospers in their hands.

Alors nous avons interrogé ces anciens et nous leur avons ainsi parlé : « Qui vous a donné l’autorisation de bâtir cette maison et de relever ces murs ? »

Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?”

Nous leur avons aussi demandé leurs noms pour te les faire connaître, afin de mettre par écrit les noms des hommes qui sont à leur tête.

We asked them their names also, to inform you that we might write the names of the men who were at their head.

Voici la réponse qu’ils nous ont faite : « Nous sommes les serviteurs du Dieu du ciel et de la terre, et nous rebâtissons la maison qui a été construite jadis, il y a bien des années, et qu’avait bâtie et achevée un grand roi d’Israël.

Thus they returned us answer, saying, “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished.

Mais, après que nos pères eurent irrité le Dieu du ciel, il les livra entre les mains de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, le Chaldéen, qui détruisit cette maison et emmena le peuple captif à Babylone.

But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

Toutefois, la première année de Cyrus, roi de Babylone, le roi Cyrus rendit un décret permettant de rebâtir cette maison de Dieu.

But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God.

Et même le roi Cyrus retira du temple de Babylone les ustensiles d’or et d’argent de la maison de Dieu, que Nabuchodonosor avait enlevés du temple qui était à Jérusalem et transportés dans le temple de Babylone ; ils furent remis au nommé Sassabasar, qu’il établit gouverneur.

The gold and silver vessels of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king also took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor.

Et il lui dit : Prends ces ustensiles, va les déposer dans le temple qui est à Jérusalem, et que la maison de Dieu soit rebâtie sur son emplacement.

He said to him, ‘Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let God’s house be built in its place.’

Alors ce Sassabasar est venu, et il a posé les fondements de la maison de Dieu qui est à Jérusalem ; depuis lors jusqu’à présent, elle se construit, et elle n’est pas achevée. »

Then the same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of God’s house which is in Jerusalem. Since that time even until now has it been in building, and yet it is not completed.

Maintenant, si le roi le trouve bon, que l’on fasse des recherches dans la maison des trésors du roi, là à Babylone, pour savoir s’il existe un décret rendu par le roi Cyrus, permettant de bâtir cette maison de Dieu à Jérusalem. Puis, que le roi nous transmette sa volonté à cet égard. »

Now therefore, if it seems good to the king, let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it is so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”

Chapitre 6

Alors le roi Darius rendit un décret et l’on fit des recherches dans la maison des archives, où étaient déposés les trésors, à Babylone.

Then Darius the king made a decree, and the house of the archives, where the treasures were laid up in Babylon, was searched.

Et l’on trouva à Ecbatane, la forteresse qui est en la province de Médie, un rouleau sur lequel était écrit le document suivant :

A scroll was found at Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of Media, and in it this was written for a record:

« La première année du roi Cyrus, le roi Cyrus a donné cet ordre : que la maison de Dieu qui est à Jérusalem, que cette maison soit rebâtie pour être un lieu où l’on offre des sacrifices, et que les fondations soient solidement posées. Sa hauteur sera de soixante coudées et sa largeur de soixante coudées.

In the first year of Cyrus the king, Cyrus the king made a decree: Concerning God’s house at Jerusalem, let the house be built, the place where they offer sacrifices, and let its foundations be strongly laid; with its height sixty cubits, and its width sixty cubits;

Il y aura trois rangées de pierre de taille et une rangée de bois ; la dépense sera payée par la maison du roi.

with three courses of great stones and a course of new timber. Let the expenses be given out of the king’s house.

En outre, on rendra les ustensiles d’or et d’argent de la maison de Dieu, que Nabuchodonosor avait enlevés du temple qui est à Jérusalem, et ils seront transportés au temple qui est à Jérusalem, à la place où ils étaient, et tu les déposeras dans la maison de Dieu. »

Also let the gold and silver vessels of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought to Babylon, be restored and brought again to the temple which is at Jerusalem, everything to its place. You shall put them in God’s house.

« …Maintenant, Thathanaï, gouverneur d’au delà du fleuve, Stharbuzanaï et vos compagnons d’Apharsach, qui êtes au delà du fleuve, tenez-vous éloignés de là,

Now therefore, Tattenai, governor beyond the River, Shetharbozenai, and your companions the Apharsachites, who are beyond the River, you must stay far from there.

et laissez continuer les travaux de cette maison de Dieu ; que le gouverneur des Juifs et les anciens des Juifs rebâtissent cette maison de Dieu sur son ancien emplacement.

Leave the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in its place.

Voici l’ordre que je donne touchant ce que vous devez faire avec ces anciens des Juifs pour rebâtir cette maison de Dieu : sur les biens du roi, provenant des impôts d’au delà du fleuve, la dépense sera exactement payée à ces hommes, afin qu’il n’y ait pas d’interruption.

Moreover I make a decree what you shall do for these elders of the Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the River, expenses must be given with all diligence to these men, that they not be hindered.

Ce qui sera nécessaire pour les holocaustes du Dieu du ciel, jeunes taureaux, béliers et agneaux, froment, sel, vin et huile, selon l’ordonnance des prêtres qui sont à Jérusalem, leur sera donné jour par jour, sans faute,

That which they have need of, including young bulls, rams, and lambs, for burnt offerings to the God of heaven; also wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the word of the priests who are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail;

afin qu’ils offrent des sacrifices d’agréable odeur au Dieu du ciel, et qu’ils prient pour la vie du roi et de ses fils.

that they may offer sacrifices of pleasant aroma to the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons.

Je donne aussi cet ordre : Si quelqu’un change cette parole, qu’on arrache de sa maison une poutre, qu’il y soit suspendu et attaché, et qu’à cause de cela l’on fasse de sa maison un tas d’immondices.

I have also made a decree that whoever alters this message, let a beam be pulled out from his house, and let him be lifted up and fastened on it; and let his house be made a dunghill for this.

Que le Dieu qui fait résider là son nom renverse tout roi et tout peuple qui étendraient la main pour changer ce décret et détruire cette maison de Dieu qui est à Jérusalem ! Moi, Darius, j’ai donné cet ordre : qu’il soit ponctuellement exécuté. » 4. Chap. vi, 13-18 : Achèvement des travaux et dédicace du nouveau temple.

May the God who has caused his name to dwell there overthrow all kings and peoples who stretch out their hand to alter the same, to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I Darius have made a decree. Let it be done with all diligence.

Alors Thathanaï, gouverneur d’au delà du fleuve, Stharbuzanaï et leurs compagnons se conformèrent ponctuellement à l’ordre que le roi Darius leur avait envoyé.

Then Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, Shetharbozenai, and their companions did accordingly with all diligence, because Darius the king had sent a decree.

Et les anciens d’Israël se mirent à bâtir et firent des progrès, soutenus par les prophéties d’Aggée, le prophète, et de Zacharie, fils d’Addo. Ils bâtirent et achevèrent, d’après l’ordre du Dieu d’Israël et d’après l’ordre de Cyrus, de Darius et d’Artaxerxès, roi de Perse.

The elders of the Jews built and prospered, through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. They built and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the decree of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.

On acheva cette maison le troisième jour du mois d’Adar, dans la sixième année du règne du roi Darius.

This house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.

Les enfants d’Israël, les prêtres et les lévites, et le reste des fils de la captivité, firent avec joie la dédicace de cette maison de Dieu.

The children of Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy.

Ils offrirent, pour la dédicace de cette maison de Dieu, cent taureaux, deux cents béliers, quatre cents agneaux, et, comme victimes pour le péché, en faveur de tout Israël, douze boucs, d’après le nombre des tribus d’Israël.

They offered at the dedication of this house of God one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve male goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.

Ils établirent les prêtres selon leurs divisions et les lévites selon leurs classes pour le service du Dieu qui est à Jérusalem, comme il est écrit dans le livre de Moïse. 5. Chap. vi, 19-22 : La fête de la Pâque.

They set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem, as it is written in the book of Moses.

Les fils de la captivité célébrèrent la Pâque le quatorzième jour du premier mois.

The children of the captivity kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.

Car les prêtres et les lévites sans exception s’étaient purifiés ; tous étaient purs ; et ils immolèrent la Pâque pour tous les fils de la captivité, pour leurs frères les prêtres et pour eux-mêmes.

Because the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together, all of them were pure. They killed the Passover for all the children of the captivity, for their brothers the priests, and for themselves.

Les enfants d’Israël revenus de la captivité mangèrent la Pâque, ainsi que tous ceux qui s’étaient séparés de l’impureté des nations du pays pour se joindre à eux afin de chercher Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël.

The children of Israel who had returned out of the captivity, and all who had separated themselves to them from the filthiness of the nations of the land, to seek Yahweh, the God of Israel, ate,

Ils célébrèrent avec joie pendant sept jours la fête des Azymes ; car Yahweh les avait réjouis en tournant vers eux le cœur du roi d’Assyrie, pour soutenir leurs mains dans l’œuvre de la maison de Dieu, du Dieu d’Israël. _____________

and kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy; because Yahweh had made them joyful, and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria to them, to strengthen their hands in the work of God, the God of Israel’s house.

Chapitre 7

Après ces événements, sous le règne d’Artaxerxès, roi de Perse, Esdras, fils de Saraïas, fils d’Azarias, fils d’Helcias,

Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

fils de Sellum, fils de Sadoc, fils d’Achitob,

the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,

fils d’Amarias, fils d’Azarias, fils de Maraïoth,

the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,

fils de Zarahias, fils d’Ozi, fils de Bocci,

the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki,

fils d’Abisué, fils de Phinées, fils d’Eléazar, fils d’Aaron, le grand prêtre, —

the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest—

cet Esdras monta de Babylone : c’était un scribe versé dans la loi de Moïse, qu’a donnée Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël. Comme la main de Yahweh, son Dieu, était sur lui, le roi lui accorda tout ce qu’il avait demandé.

this Ezra went up from Babylon. He was a skilled scribe in the law of Moses, which Yahweh, the God of Israel, had given; and the king granted him all his request, according to Yahweh his God’s hand on him.

Plusieurs des enfants d’Israël, des prêtres et des lévites, des chantres, des portiers et des Nathinéens montèrent aussi à Jérusalem, la septième année du roi Artaxerxès.

Some of the children of Israel, including some of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

Esdras arriva à Jérusalem le cinquième mois de la septième année du roi.

He came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.

C’est le premier jour du premier mois qu’il commença à monter de Babylone, et c’est le premier jour du cinquième mois qu’il arriva à Jérusalem, la main bienfaisante de son Dieu étant sur lui.

For on the first day of the first month he began to go up from Babylon; and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God on him.

Car Esdras avait appliqué son cœur à étudier la loi de Yahweh, à la mettre en pratique, et à enseigner en Israël les préceptes et les ordonnances. 2. Chap. vii, 11-28a : Firman d’Artaxerxès autorisant le voyage et en précisant le but ; actions de grâces d’Esdras.

For Ezra had set his heart to seek Yahweh’s law, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.

Voici la copie de la lettre que le roi Artaxerxès donna à Esdras, le prêtre et le scribe, scribe instruit des paroles de la loi de Yahweh et de ses préceptes, concernant Israël :

Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, even the scribe of the words of Yahweh’s commandments, and of his statutes to Israel:

« Artaxerxès, roi des rois, à Esdras, prêtre et scribe versé dans la loi du Dieu du ciel, etc.

Artaxerxes, king of kings, To Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the perfect God of heaven. Now

J’ai donné ordre pour que tous ceux du peuple d’Israël, de ses prêtres et de ses lévites, résidant dans mon royaume, qui désirent aller à Jérusalem, y aillent avec toi.

I make a decree, that all those of the people of Israel, and their priests and the Levites, in my realm, who intend of their own free will to go to Jerusalem, go with you.

Car tu es envoyé par le roi et ses sept conseillers pour inspecter Juda et Jérusalem d’après la loi de ton Dieu, laquelle est dans ta main,

Because you are sent by the king and his seven counselors, to inquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of your God which is in your hand,

et pour porter l’argent et l’or que le roi et ses conseillers ont spontanément offerts au Dieu d’Israël, dont la demeure est à Jérusalem,

and to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem,

ainsi que tout l’or et l’argent que tu trouveras dans toute la province de Babylone, avec les dons volontaires du peuple et des prêtres, librement offerts pour la maison de leur Dieu à Jérusalem.

and all the silver and gold that you will find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem;

C’est pourquoi tu auras soin d’acheter avec cet argent des taureaux, des béliers, des agneaux, et ce qui est nécessaire pour les oblations et les libations qui les accompagnent, et tu les offriras sur l’autel de la maison de votre Dieu, qui est à Jérusalem.

therefore you shall with all diligence buy with this money bulls, rams, lambs, with their meal offerings and their drink offerings, and shall offer them on the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.

Vous ferez, avec le reste de l’argent et de l’or, ce qui vous paraîtra bon, à toi et à tes frères, en vous conformant à la volonté de votre Dieu.

Whatever seems good to you and to your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, do that according to the will of your God.

Dépose devant le Dieu de Jérusalem les ustensiles qui te sont donnés pour le service de la maison de ton Dieu.

The vessels that are given to you for the service of the house of your God, deliver before the God of Jerusalem.

Et le reste de ce qui est nécessaire à la maison de ton Dieu, et que tu auras à fournir, tu le fourniras après l’avoir reçu de la maison des trésors du roi.

Whatever more will be needed for the house of your God, which you may have occasion to give, give it out of the king’s treasure house.

Et moi, le roi Artaxerxès, je donne ordre à tous les trésoriers d’au delà du fleuve que tout ce qu’Esdras, prêtre et scribe, versé dans la loi du Dieu du ciel, vous demandera, soit exactement exécuté :

I, even I Artaxerxes the king, make a decree to all the treasurers who are beyond the River, that whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, requires of you, it shall be done with all diligence,

jusqu’à cent talents d’argent, cent cors de froment, cent baths de vin, cent baths d’huile, et du sel à discrétion.

up to one hundred talents of silver, and to one hundred cors of wheat, and to one hundred baths of wine, and to one hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much.

Que tout ce qui est ordonné par le Dieu du ciel soit ponctuellement accompli pour la maison du Dieu du ciel, afin que sa colère ne vienne pas sur le royaume du roi et de ses fils.

Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be done exactly for the house of the God of heaven; for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?

Nous vous faisons savoir aussi qu’en ce qui concerne tous les prêtres, lévites, chantres, portiers, Nathinéens et serviteurs quelconques de cette maison de Dieu, il n’est pas permis de lever sur eux ni impôt, ni tribut, ni droit de passage.

Also we inform you that it shall not be lawful to impose tribute, custom, or toll, on any of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants, or laborers of this house of God.

Et toi, Esdras, selon la sagesse de ton Dieu, qui est dans ta main, établis des juges et des magistrats qui rendent la justice à tout le peuple d’au delà du fleuve, à tous ceux qui connaissent les lois de ton Dieu, et enseigne-les à ceux qui ne les connaissent pas.

You, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God that is in your hand, appoint magistrates and judges, who may judge all the people who are beyond the River, who all know the laws of your God; and teach him who doesn’t know them.

Quiconque n’exécutera pas la loi de ton Dieu et la loi du roi, qu’il soit fait de lui exacte justice, soit par la mort, soit par le bannissement, soit par une amende, soit par la prison. »

Whoever will not do the law of your God and the law of the king, let judgment be executed on him with all diligence, whether it is to death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.

Béni soit Yahweh, le Dieu de nos pères, qui a mis ainsi au cœur du roi de glorifier la maison de Yahweh qui est à Jérusalem,

Blessed be Yahweh, the God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem;

et qui a tourné sur moi la bienveillance du roi, de ses conseillers et de tous les plus puissants officiers du roi ! 3. Chap. vii, 28b — viii, 31 : Voyage d’Esdras. — Le rassemblement (vii, 28b) ; les compagnons d’Esdras (viii, 1-14). Départ, protection divine sur le chemin (viii, 31). Et je pris courage parce que la main de Yahweh mon Dieu était sur moi, et je rassemblai les chefs d’Israël, afin qu’ils partissent avec moi.

and has extended loving kindness to me before the king and his counselors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. I was strengthened according to Yahweh my God’s hand on me, and I gathered together chief men out of Israel to go up with me.

Chapitre 8

Voici les chefs de famille — avec leur généalogie, — de ceux qui montèrent avec moi de Babylone, sous le règne du roi Artaxerxès.

Now these are the heads of their fathers’ households, and this is the genealogy of those who went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king:

Des fils de Phinées, Gersom ; des fils d’Ithamar, Daniel ; des fils de David, Hattus,

Of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom. Of the sons of Ithamar, Daniel. Of the sons of David, Hattush.

qui descendait de Séchénias ; des fils de Pharos, Zacharie, et avec lui cent cinquante mâles inscrits dans le registre de famille.

Of the sons of Shecaniah, of the sons of Parosh, Zechariah; and with him were listed by genealogy of the males one hundred fifty.

Des fils de Phahath-Moab, Elioénaï, fils de Zaréhias, et avec lui deux cents mâles ;

Of the sons of Pahathmoab, Eliehoenai the son of Zerahiah; and with him two hundred males.

des fils de Séchénias, fils d’Ezéchiel, et avec lui trois cents mâles ;

Of the sons of Shecaniah, the son of Jahaziel; and with him three hundred males.

Je les rassemblai près de la rivière qui coule vers Ahava, et nous campâmes là trois jours. Ayant porté mon attention sur le peuple et sur les prêtres, je ne trouvai là aucun des fils de Lévi.

I gathered them together to the river that runs to Ahava; and there we encamped three days: and I looked around at the people the priests, and found there were none of the sons of Levi.

Alors je fis appeler les chefs Eliézer, Ariel, Séméïas, Elnathan, Jarib, un autre Elnathan, Nathan, Zacharie et Mosollam, ainsi que les docteurs Joïarib et Elnathan.

Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, for Elnathan, for Jarib, for Elnathan, for Nathan, for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib and for Elnathan, who were teachers.

Je les envoyai vers le chef Eddo, à l’endroit appelé Chasphia, et je mis dans leur bouche les paroles qu’ils devaient dire à Eddo et à ses frères les Nathinéens qui étaient à l’endroit appelé Chasphia, afin qu’ils nous amenassent des ministres pour la maison de notre Dieu.

I sent them out to Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia; and I told them what they should tell Iddo, and his brothers the temple servants, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring to us ministers for the house of our God.

Et comme la main bienfaisante de notre Dieu était sur nous, ils nous amenèrent un homme intelligent, d’entre les fils de Moholi, fils de Lévi, fils d’Israël, savoir Sarabias, et avec lui ses fils et ses frères au nombre de dix-huit ;

According to the good hand of our God on us they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brothers, eighteen;

Hasabias, et avec lui Isaïe, d’entre les fils de Mérari,

and Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brothers and their sons, twenty;

ses frères et leurs fils au nombre de vingt ; et d’entre les Nathinéens, que David et les chefs avaient donnés pour le service des lévites, deux cent vingt Nathinéens, tous nominativement désignés.

and of the temple servants, whom David and the princes had given for the service of the Levites, two hundred twenty temple servants. All of them were mentioned by name.

Je publiai là, près de la rivière d’Ahava, un jeûne pour nous affliger devant notre Dieu, afin d’implorer de lui un heureux voyage pour nous, pour nos enfants et pour tout ce qui nous appartenait.

Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a straight way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our possessions.

Car j’aurais eu honte de demander au roi une escorte et des cavaliers pour nous secourir contre l’ennemi pendant la route, parce que nous avions dit au roi : « La main de notre Dieu est pour leur bien sur tous ceux qui le cherchent, mais sa force et sa colère sont sur tous ceux qui l’abandonnent. »

For I was ashamed to ask of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the way, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is on all those who seek him, for good; but his power and his wrath is against all those who forsake him.”

Et à cause de cela nous jeûnâmes et nous invoquâmes notre Dieu ; et il nous exauça.

So we fasted and begged our God for this: and he granted our request.

Je choisis douze chefs des prêtres, Sarabias et Hasabias, et dix de leurs frères.

Then I set apart twelve of the chiefs of the priests, even Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brothers with them,

Je pesai devant eux l’argent, l’or et les ustensiles, offrande qu’avaient prélevée pour la maison de notre Dieu le roi, ses conseillers et ses chefs, et tous ceux d’Israël qui se trouvaient là ;

and weighed to them the silver, the gold, and the vessels, even the offering for the house of our God, which the king, his counselors, his princes, and all Israel there present, had offered.

et je pesai, en les remettant entre leurs mains, six cent cinquante talents d’argent, des ustensiles d’argent de la valeur de cent talents, cent talents d’or,

I weighed into their hand six hundred fifty talents of silver, one hundred talents of silver vessels; one hundred talents of gold,

vingt coupes d’or de la valeur de mille dariques, et deux vases d’un bel airain brillant, aussi précieux que l’or.

twenty bowls of gold weighing one thousand darics; and two vessels of fine bright brass, precious as gold.

Et je leur dis : « Vous êtes saints devant Yahweh, et ces ustensiles sont saints, cet argent et cet or sont une offrande volontaire à Yahweh, Dieu de vos pères.

I said to them, “You are holy to Yahweh, and the vessels are holy. The silver and the gold are a freewill offering to Yahweh, the God of your fathers.

Soyez vigilants à les garder, jusqu’à ce que vous les pesiez devant les chefs des prêtres et des lévites, et devant les chefs de famille d’Israël, à Jérusalem, dans les chambres de la maison de Yahweh. »

Watch and keep them, until you weigh them before the chiefs of the priests and the Levites, and the princes of the fathers’ households of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the rooms of Yahweh’s house.”

Et les prêtres et les lévites reçurent au poids l’argent, l’or et les ustensiles, pour les porter à Jérusalem dans la maison de notre Dieu.

So the priests and the Levites received the weight of the silver and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem to the house of our God.

Nous partîmes de la rivière d’Ahava le douzième jour du premier mois, pour nous rendre à Jérusalem. La main de notre Dieu fut sur nous, et nous sauva des mains de l’ennemi et des embûches pendant la route. 4. Chap. viii, 32-36 : À Jérusalem ; remise des offrandes, sacrifices.

Then we departed from the river Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and the bandit by the way.

Arrivés à Jérusalem, nous nous y reposâmes trois jours.

We came to Jerusalem, and stayed there three days.

Le quatrième jour, l’argent, l’or et les ustensiles furent pesés, dans la maison de notre Dieu, entre les mains de Mérimuth, fils d’Urie, le prêtre ; il y avait avec lui Eléazar, fils de Phinées et avec eux les lévites Jozabad, fils de Josué, et Noadias, fils de Bennui.

On the fourth day the silver and the gold and the vessels were weighed in the house of our God into the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, the Levite;

Le tout fut livré selon le nombre et selon le poids ; et le poids total fut mis par écrit en ce temps-là.

everything by number and by weight; and all the weight was written at that time.

Ceux qui revenaient de l’exil, les fils de la captivité, offrirent en holocauste au Dieu d’Israël douze taureaux pour tout Israël, quatre-vingt-seize béliers, soixante-dix-sept agneaux, douze boucs pour le péché, le tout en holocauste à Yahweh.

The children of the captivity, who had come out of exile, offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel, twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve male goats for a sin offering. All this was a burnt offering to Yahweh.

Ils transmirent les ordres du roi aux satrapes du roi et aux gouverneurs d’au delà du fleuve, et ceux-ci soutinrent le peuple et la maison de Dieu.

They delivered the king’s commissions to the king’s satraps, and to the governors beyond the River. So they supported the people and God’s house.

Chapitre 9

Quand ces choses furent achevées, les chefs s’approchèrent de moi, en disant : « Le peuple d’Israël, les prêtres et les lévites ne se sont point séparés des peuples de ces pays ; ils imitent leurs abominations, celles des Chananéens, des Héthéens, des Phérézéens, des Jébuséens, des Ammonites, des Moabites, des Égyptiens et des Amorrhéens.

Now when these things were done, the princes came near to me, saying, “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, following their abominations, even those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

Car ils ont pris de leurs filles pour eux et pour leurs fils, et la race sainte s’est alliée avec les peuples de ces pays ; et la main des chefs et des magistrats a été la première dans cette transgression. »

For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy offspring have mixed themselves with the peoples of the lands. Yes, the hand of the princes and rulers has been chief in this trespass.”

Lorsque j’appris cette affaire, je déchirai mes vêtements et mon manteau, je m’arrachai les cheveux de la tête et la barbe, et je m’assis consterné.

When I heard this thing, I tore my garment and my robe, and pulled the hair out of my head and of my beard, and sat down confounded.

Auprès de moi se réunirent tous ceux qui tremblaient à cause des paroles du Dieu d’Israël, à cause de la transgression des fils de la captivité ; et moi, je restai assis, consterné, jusqu’à l’oblation du soir. 6. Chap. ix, 5-15. Prière d’Esdras. — Au temps de l’oblation du soir (ix, 5) ; Confession des péchés du peuple (ix, 6, 7), malgré lesquels Dieu ne l’a pas abandonné (ix, 8, 9) ; le commandement divin touchant les mariages (ix, 10-12), que l’on ne saurait violer plus longtemps (ix, 13-15).

Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel were assembled to me, because of their trespass of the captivity; and I sat confounded until the evening offering.

Puis, au moment de l’oblation du soir, je me levai de mon affliction, avec mes vêtements et mon manteau déchirés, et, tombant à genoux, les mains étendues vers Yahweh, mon Dieu,

At the evening offering I arose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe torn; and I fell on my knees, and spread out my hands to Yahweh my God;

je dis : « Mon Dieu, je suis trop chargé de honte et de confusion pour lever ma face vers vous, mon Dieu ; car nos iniquités se sont multipliées par-dessus nos têtes, et notre faute est montée jusqu’au ciel.

and I said, “My God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God; for our iniquities have increased over our head, and our guiltiness has grown up to the heavens.

Depuis les jours de nos pères jusqu’à ce jour, nous avons été grandement coupables ; et c’est à cause de nos iniquités que nous avons été livrés, nous, nos rois et nos prêtres, aux mains des rois des pays, à l’épée, à la captivité, au pillage et à la honte, comme nous le sommes encore aujourd’hui.

Since the days of our fathers we have been exceeding guilty to this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests, have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

Et maintenant, Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous a un moment témoigné sa miséricorde, en nous laissant un reste et en nous accordant un abri dans son lieu saint, afin que notre Dieu éclaire nos yeux et nous rende un peu de vie au milieu de notre servitude.

Now for a little moment grace has been shown from Yahweh our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and revived us a little in our bondage.

Car nous sommes esclaves ; mais notre Dieu ne nous a pas abandonnés dans notre servitude. Il a dirigé sur nous la bienveillance des rois de Perse, pour nous rendre la vie, afin que nous bâtissions la maison de notre Dieu et que nous relevions ses ruines, et pour nous donner une demeure close en Juda et à Jérusalem.

For we are bondservants; yet our God has not forsaken us in our bondage, but has extended loving kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to revive us, to set up the house of our God, and to repair its ruins, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

Maintenant, ô notre Dieu, que dirons-nous après cela ? Car nous avons abandonné vos commandements

“Now, our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,

que vous nous aviez prescrits par l’organe de vos serviteurs les prophètes, en disant : Le pays dans lequel vous entrez pour en prendre possession est un pays d’impureté, souillé par les impuretés des peuples de ces contrées, par les abominations dont ils l’ont rempli d’un bout à l’autre avec leurs impuretés.

which you have commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land, to which you go to possess it, is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, through their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their filthiness.

Et maintenant, ne donnez point vos filles à leurs fils, et ne prenez point leurs filles pour vos fils, et n’ayez jamais souci de leur prospérité ni de leur bien-être, afin que vous deveniez forts, que vous mangiez les bons produits de ce pays, et que vous le transmettiez pour toujours en héritage à vos enfants...

Now therefore don’t give your daughters to their sons. Don’t take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity forever; that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.’

Après tout ce qui nous est arrivé à cause de nos mauvaises actions et de nos grandes fautes, — quoique vous nous ayez épargnés, ô notre Dieu, plus que ne le méritaient nos iniquités, et que vous nous ayez laissé un reste tel que celui-ci, —

“After all that has come on us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, since you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such a remnant,

pourrions-nous violer de nouveau vos commandements et nous allier avec ces peuples si abominables ? Ne vous irriteriez-vous pas contre nous jusqu’à nous détruire, sans laisser ni reste ni réchappés ?

shall we again break your commandments, and join in affinity with the peoples that do these abominations? Wouldn’t you be angry with us until you had consumed us, so that there would be no remnant, nor any to escape?

Yahweh, Dieu d’Israël, vous êtes juste, car nous ne sommes aujourd’hui qu’un reste de réchappés ; nous voici devant vous avec notre faute ; car nous ne pouvons, à cause d’elle, subsister devant votre face. »

Yahweh, the God of Israel, you are righteous; for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guiltiness; for no one can stand before you because of this.”

Chapitre 10

Pendant qu’Esdras, pleurant et prosterné devant la maison de Dieu, faisait cette prière et cette confession, il s’était réuni auprès de lui une assemblée très nombreuse d’Israélites, hommes, femmes et enfants ; car le peuple versait beaucoup de larmes.

Now while Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before God’s house, there was gathered together to him out of Israel a very great assembly of men and women and children; for the people wept very bitterly.

Alors Séchénias, fils de Jéhiel, d’entre les fils d’Élam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras : « Nous avons péché contre notre Dieu en établissant chez nous des femmes étrangères, appartenant à la population du pays. Et maintenant, il reste à cet égard à Israël une espérance.

Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered Ezra, “We have trespassed against our God, and have married foreign women of the peoples of the land. Yet now there is hope for Israel concerning this thing.

Concluons maintenant une alliance avec notre Dieu, en vue de renvoyer toutes les femmes et les enfants issus d’elles, selon le conseil de mon seigneur et de ceux qui craignent devant les commandements de notre Dieu. Et qu’il soit fait selon la Loi.

Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and those who as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God. Let it be done according to the law.

Lève-toi, car c’est à toi de prendre en main cette affaire. Nous serons avec toi. Courage, et à l’œuvre ! »

Arise; for the matter belongs to you, and we are with you. Be courageous, and do it.”

Esdras se leva, et il fit jurer aux chefs des prêtres, des lévites et de tout Israël, de faire comme il venait d’être dit ; et ils le jurèrent.

Then Ezra arose, and made the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. So they swore.

Puis, s’étant retiré de devant la maison de Dieu, Esdras alla dans la chambre de Johanan, fils d’Eliasib ; quand il y fut entré, il ne mangea pas de pain et ne but pas d’eau, parce qu’il était dans le deuil à cause du péché des fils de la captivité.

Then Ezra rose up from before God’s house, and went into the room of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib. When he came there, he ate no bread, nor drank water; for he mourned because of their trespass of the captivity.

On fit passer une proclamation dans Juda et à Jérusalem, pour que tous les fils de la captivité se réunissent à Jérusalem ;

They made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together to Jerusalem;

et, d’après l’avis des chefs et des anciens, quiconque n’y serait pas arrivé dans trois jours, aurait tous ses biens confisqués et serait lui-même exclu de l’assemblée des fils de la captivité.

and that whoever didn’t come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his possessions should be forfeited, and himself separated from the assembly of the captivity.

Tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans les trois jours ; c’était le vingtième jour du neuvième mois. Tout le peuple se tenait sur la place de la maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de la circonstance, et parce qu’il pleuvait.

Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together to Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the wide place in front of God’s house, trembling because of this matter, and because of the great rain.

Esdras, le prêtre, se leva et leur dit : « Vous avez péché en établissant chez vous des femmes étrangères, ajoutant ainsi à la faute d’Israël.

Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have trespassed, and have married foreign women, to increase the guilt of Israel.

Et maintenant, confessez votre faute à Yahweh, le Dieu de vos pères, et faites sa volonté ; séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères. »

Now therefore make confession to Yahweh, the God of your fathers, and do his pleasure; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign women.”

Toute l’assemblée répondit, en disant d’une voix haute : « À nous d’agir comme tu l’as dit !

Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, “As you have said concerning us, so must we do.

Mais le peuple est nombreux, et c’est le temps des pluies, et il n’est pas possible de rester dehors ; d’ailleurs, ce n’est pas l’affaire d’un jour ou deux, car nous avons commis un grave péché en cette matière.

But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand outside. This is not a work of one day or two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.

Que nos chefs restent donc pour toute l’assemblée ; et que tous ceux qui, dans nos villes, ont établi chez eux des femmes étrangères, viennent aux jours qui leur seront fixés, avec les anciens de chaque ville et ses juges, jusqu’à ce qu’on ait détourné de nous le feu de la colère de notre Dieu au sujet de cette affaire. »

Now let our princes be appointed for all the assembly, and let all those who are in our cities who have married foreign women come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and its judges, until the fierce wrath of our God is turned from us, until this matter is resolved.”

Il n’y eut que Jonathan, fils d’Azahel, et Jaasias, fils de Thécuah, pour combattre cet avis ; et Mosollam et Sebéthaï, le lévite, les appuyèrent.

Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah stood up against this; and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.

The children of the captivity did so. Ezra the priest, with certain heads of fathers’ households, after their fathers’ houses, and all of them by their names, were set apart; and they sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

Ils en eurent fini le premier jour du premier mois avec tous les hommes qui avaient établi chez eux des femmes étrangères.

They finished with all the men who had married foreign women by the first day of the first month.

Parmi les fils des prêtres, il s’en trouva qui avaient établi chez eux des femmes étrangères, savoir : des fils de Josué, fils de Josédec, et de ses frères : Maasias, Eliézer, Jarib et Godolias ;

Among the sons of the priests there were found who had married foreign women: of the sons of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and his brothers, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.

ils donnèrent parole de renvoyer leurs femmes et, se déclarant coupables, d’offrir un bélier pour l’expiation de leur faute.

They gave their hand that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their guilt.
