A Jewish queen averts a planned massacre in the Persian court
A novella set in the Persian court of Ahasuerus (Xerxes I). The Jewish queen Esther, aided by her cousin Mordecai, foils the genocidal plot of the vizier Haman against the Jewish population of the empire. The story provides the foundation narrative for the festival of Purim.

He displayed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent majesty many days, even one hundred eighty days.

Lorsque ces jours furent écoulés, le roi fit pour tout le peuple qui se trouvait à Suse, la capitale, depuis le plus grand jusqu’au plus petit, un festin de sept jours, dans la cour du jardin de la maison royale.
When these days were fulfilled, the king made a seven day feast for all the people who were present in Shushan the palace, both great and small, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace.

Des tentures blanches, vertes et bleues étaient attachées par des cordons de byssus et de pourpre à des anneaux d’argent et à des colonnes de marbre ; des lits d’or et d’argent étaient posés sur un pavé de porphyre, de marbre blanc, de nacre et de marbre noir.
There were hangings of white, green, and blue material, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and marble pillars. The couches were of gold and silver, on a pavement of red, white, yellow, and black marble.

They gave them drinks in golden vessels of various kinds, including royal wine in abundance, according to the bounty of the king.

Suivant le décret, chacun buvait sans que personne lui fît violence, car le roi avait ordonné à tous les officiers de sa maison de se conformer à la volonté de chacun des convives.
In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had instructed all the officials of his house, that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.

La reine Vasthi fit aussi un festin pour les femmes, dans la maison royale du roi Assuérus.
Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to King Ahasuerus.

Le septième jour, comme le vin avait mis la joie au cœur du roi, il ordonna à Maüman, Bazatha, Harbona, Bagatha, Abgatha, Zéthar et Charchas, les sept eunuques qui servaient devant le roi Assuérus,
On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcass, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,

d’amener en sa présence la reine Vasthi, couronnée du diadème royal, pour montrer sa beauté aux peuples et aux grands, car elle était belle de figure.
to bring Vashti the queen before the king with the royal crown, to show the people and the princes her beauty; for she was beautiful.

Mais la reine Vasthi refusa de se rendre au commandement du roi, qu’elle avait reçu par l’intermédiaire des eunuques, et le roi fut très irrité et sa colère s’enflamma.
But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by the eunuchs. Therefore the king was very angry, and his anger burned in him.

Alors le roi s’adressa aux sages qui avaient la connaissance des temps : — car ainsi se traitaient les affaires du roi, devant tous ceux qui étaient experts dans la loi et le droit,
Then the king said to the wise men, who knew the times (for it was the king’s custom to consult those who knew law and judgment;

et les plus près de lui étaient Charséna, Séthar, Admatha, Tharsis, Marès, Marsana et Mamuchan, les sept princes de Perse et de Médie, qui voyaient la face du roi et qui occupaient le premier rang dans le royaume. —
and the next to him were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king’s face, and sat first in the kingdom),

« Quelle loi, dit-il, doit-on appliquer à la reine Vasthi, pour n’avoir pas exécuté l’ordre du roi Assuérus, qu’il lui a donné par l’intermédiaire des eunuques ? »
“What shall we do to the queen Vashti according to law, because she has not done the bidding of the King Ahasuerus by the eunuchs?”

Mamuchan répondit devant le roi et les princes : « Ce n’est pas seulement à l’égard du roi que la reine Vasthi a mal agi, mais aussi envers tous les princes et tous les peuples qui sont dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus.
Memucan answered before the king and the princes, “Vashti the queen has not done wrong to just the king, but also to all the princes, and to all the people who are in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus.

Car l’action de la reine viendra à la connaissance de toutes les femmes et les portera à mépriser leurs maris ; elles diront : Le roi Assuérus avait ordonné qu’on amenât en sa présence la reine Vasthi, et elle n’y est point allée.
For this deed of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to show contempt for their husbands, when it is reported, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she didn’t come.’

Et dès aujourd’hui, les princesses de Perse et de Médie, qui auront appris l’action de la reine, la citeront à tous les princes du roi, et il en résultera beaucoup de mépris et de colère.
Today, the princesses of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s deed will tell all the king’s princes. This will cause much contempt and wrath.

Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’on publie de sa part et qu’on inscrive parmi les lois des Perses et des Mèdes, pour n’être pas enfreinte, une ordonnance royale portant que la reine Vasthi ne paraîtra plus devant le roi Assuérus, et que le roi donnera sa dignité de reine à une autre qui soit meilleure qu’elle.
“If it pleases the king, let a royal commandment go from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it cannot be altered, that Vashti may never again come before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate to another who is better than she.

Et quand l’édit du roi sera connu dans tout son royaume, qui est vaste, toutes les femmes rendront honneur à leurs maris, depuis le plus grand jusqu’au plus petit. »
When the king’s decree which he shall make is published throughout all his kingdom (for it is great), all the wives will give their husbands honor, both great and small.”

Le conseil plut au roi et aux princes, et le roi agit selon le discours de Mamuchan.
This advice pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan:

for he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language, that every man should rule his own house, speaking in the language of his own people.

After these things, when the wrath of King Ahasuerus was pacified, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.

Alors les serviteurs du roi, qui étaient en fonctions près de lui, dirent : « Qu’on cherche pour le roi des jeunes filles, vierges et belles de figure ;
Then the king’s servants who served him said, “Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king.

que le roi établisse dans toutes les provinces de son royaume des officiers chargés de rassembler toutes les jeunes filles, vierges et belles de figure, à Suse, la capitale, dans la maison des femmes, sous la surveillance d’Egée, eunuque du roi et gardien des femmes, qui pourvoira à leur toilette ;
Let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the beautiful young virgins to the citadel of Susa, to the women’s house, to the custody of Hegai the king’s eunuch, keeper of the women. Let cosmetics be given them;

et que la jeune fille qui plaira au roi devienne reine à la place de Vasthi. « Le roi approuva cet avis, et il fit ainsi.
and let the maiden who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” The thing pleased the king, and he did so.

There was a certain Jew in the citadel of Susa, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite,

who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives who had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.

Il élevait Edissa, qui est Esther, fille de son oncle ; car elle n’avait ni père ni mère. La jeune fille était belle de forme et d’un gracieux visage ; à la mort de son père et de sa mère, Mardochée l’avait adoptée pour fille.
He brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter; for she had neither father nor mother. The maiden was fair and beautiful; and when her father and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.

Lorsqu’on eut publié l’ordre du roi et son édit, et que de nombreuses jeunes filles furent rassemblées à Suse, la capitale, sous la surveillance d’Egée, Esther fut prise aussi et amenée dans la maison du roi, sous la surveillance d’Egée, gardien des femmes.
So, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together to the citadel of Susa, to the custody of Hegai, Esther was taken into the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.

La jeune fille lui plut et gagna sa faveur ; il s’empressa de lui fournir les choses nécessaires à sa toilette et à sa subsistance, de lui donner sept jeunes filles choisies dans la maison du roi, et il la fit passer avec elles dans le meilleur appartement de la maison des femmes.
The maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness from him. He quickly gave her cosmetics and her portions of food, and the seven choice maidens who were to be given her out of the king’s house. He moved her and her maidens to the best place in the women’s house.

Esther ne fit connaître ni son peuple ni sa naissance, car Mardochée lui avait défendu d’en parler.
Esther had not made known her people nor her relatives, because Mordecai had instructed her that she should not make it known.

Chaque jour Mardochée se promenait devant la cour de la maison des femmes, pour savoir comment se portait Esther et comment on la traitait.
Mordecai walked every day in front of the court of the women’s house, to find out how Esther was doing, and what would become of her.

Et quand arrivait pour chaque jeune fille le tour d’aller vers le Roi Assuérus, après avoir passé douze mois à accomplir ce qui était prescrit aux femmes, — et voici ce que comportait le temps de leur purification : pendant six mois, elles se purifiaient avec de l’huile de myrrhe, et pendant six mois avec des aromates et des parfums en usage parmi les femmes, —
Each young woman’s turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after her purification for twelve months (for so were the days of their purification accomplished, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet fragrances and with preparations for beautifying women).

et que la jeune fille allait vers le roi, on lui permettait de prendre avec elle ce qu’elle voulait, pour aller de la maison des femmes dans la maison du roi.
The young woman then came to the king like this: whatever she desired was given her to go with her out of the women’s house to the king’s house.

Elle s’y rendait le soir, et le lendemain matin elle passait dans la seconde maison des femmes, sous la surveillance de Susagaz, eunuque du roi et gardien des concubines. Elle ne retournait plus vers le roi, à moins que le roi ne la désirât et qu’elle ne fût appelée nommément.
In the evening she went, and on the next day she returned into the second women’s house, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s eunuch, who kept the concubines. She came in to the king no more, unless the king delighted in her, and she was called by name.

Lorsque son tour d’aller vers le roi fut arrivé, Esther, fille d’Abihaïl, oncle de Mardochée qui l’avait adoptée pour fille, ne demanda pas autre chose que ce que désigna Egée, eunuque du roi et gardien des femmes ; mais Esther plut aux yeux de tous ceux qui la virent.
Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, came to go in to the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s eunuch, the keeper of the women, advised. Esther obtained favor in the sight of all those who looked at her.

Esther fut conduite auprès du roi Assuérus, dans sa maison royale, le dixième mois, qui est le mois de Tébeth, la septième année de son règne.
So Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus into his royal house in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

Le roi aima Esther plus que toutes les femmes, et elle obtint grâce et faveur auprès de lui plus que toutes les jeunes filles. Il mit le diadème royal sur sa tête, et la fit reine à la place de Vasthi.
The king loved Esther more than all the women, and she obtained favor and kindness in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown on her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Le roi donna un grand festin à tous ses princes et à ses serviteurs, le festin d’Esther ; il accorda du repos aux provinces et fit des largesses avec une munificence royale.
Then the king made a great feast for all his princes and his servants, even Esther’s feast; and he proclaimed a holiday in the provinces, and gave gifts according to the king’s bounty.

La seconde fois qu’on rassembla des jeunes filles, Mardochée était assis à la porte du roi.
When the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate.
20
Esther n’avait fait connaître ni sa naissance ni son peuple, selon que Mardochée le lui avait ordonné ; et Esther suivait les ordres de Mardochée, comme lorsqu’elle était élevée par lui.
Esther had not yet made known her relatives nor her people, as Mordecai had commanded her; for Esther obeyed Mordecai, like she did when she was brought up by him.

En ces jours-là, comme Mardochée était assis à la porte du roi, Bagathan et Tharès, deux eunuques du roi, gardes du palais, poussés par la colère, voulurent porter la main sur le roi Assuérus.
In those days, while Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate, two of the king’s eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, who were doorkeepers, were angry, and sought to lay hands on the King Ahasuerus.

Mardochée eut connaissance du complot et il en informa la reine Esther, qui le redit au roi de la part de Mardochée.
This thing became known to Mordecai, who informed Esther the queen; and Esther informed the king in Mordecai’s name.

Le fait ayant été examiné et trouvé exact, les deux eunuques furent pendus à un bois, et cela fut écrit dans le livre des Chroniques en présence du roi.
When this matter was investigated, and it was found to be so, they were both hanged on a tree; and it was written in the book of the chronicles in the king’s presence.

After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes who were with him.

Tous les serviteurs du roi, qui se tenaient à sa porte, fléchissaient le genou et se prosternaient devant Aman, car ainsi l’avait ordonné le roi à son sujet. Mais Mardochée ne fléchissait point le genou et ne se prosternait point.
All the king’s servants who were in the king’s gate bowed down, and paid homage to Haman; for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai didn’t bow down or pay him homage.

Les serviteurs du roi, qui se tenaient à sa porte, dirent à Mardochée : « Pourquoi transgresses-tu l’ordre du roi ? »
Then the king’s servants, who were in the king’s gate, said to Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the king’s commandment?”

Comme ils le lui répétaient chaque jour et qu’il ne les écoutait pas, ils en informèrent Aman, pour voir si Mardochée persévérerait dans sa résolution, car il leur avait dit qu’il était Juif.
Now it came to pass, when they spoke daily to him, and he didn’t listen to them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s reason would stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew.

Aman vit que Mardochée ne fléchissait pas le genou et ne se prosternait pas devant lui ; et Aman fut rempli de fureur.
When Haman saw that Mordecai didn’t bow down, nor pay him homage, Haman was full of wrath.

Mais il dédaigna de porter la main sur Mardochée seul, car on lui avait appris de quel peuple était Mardochée ; et Aman voulut détruire le peuple de Mardochée, tous les Juifs qui se trouvaient dans tout le royaume d’Assuérus.
But he scorned the thought of laying hands on Mordecai alone, for they had made known to him Mordecai’s people. Therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews who were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even Mordecai’s people.

Le premier mois, qui est le mois de Nisan, la douzième année du roi Assuérus, on jeta le PUR, c’est-à-dire le sort, devant Aman, pour chaque jour et pour chaque mois, jusqu’au douzième mois, qui est le mois d’Adar.
In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, and chose the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.

Alors Aman dit au roi Assuérus : « Il y a dans toutes les provinces de ton royaume un peuple dispersé et vivant à part parmi les autres peuples, ayant des lois différentes de celles de tous les autres peuples, et n’observant pas les lois du roi. Il n’est pas de l’intérêt du roi de le laisser en repos.
Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom, and their laws are different than other people’s. They don’t keep the king’s laws. Therefore it is not for the king’s profit to allow them to remain.

Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’on écrive l’ordre de les faire périr, et je pèserai dix mille talents d’argent entre les mains des fonctionnaires, pour qu’on les porte au trésor du roi. »
If it pleases the king, let it be written that they be destroyed; and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who are in charge of the king’s business, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.”

Le roi ôta son anneau de son doigt et le remit à Aman, fils d’Amadatha, du pays d’Agag, ennemi des Juifs ;
The king took his ring from his hand, and gave it to Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews’ enemy.

et le roi dit à Aman : « L’argent t’est donné et ce peuple aussi, pour que tu en fasses ce qui te paraîtra bon. »
The king said to Haman, “The silver is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you.”

Les secrétaires du roi furent appelés le treizième jour du premier mois, et l’on écrivit, conformément à tous les ordres d’Aman, aux satrapes du roi, aux gouverneurs de chaque province et aux chefs de chaque peuple, à chaque province selon son écriture, et à chaque peuple selon sa langue. Ce fut au nom du roi Assuérus que l’on écrivit, et on scella l’édit avec l’anneau royal.
Then the king’s scribes were called in on the first month, on the thirteenth day of the month; and all that Haman commanded was written to the king’s satraps, and to the governors who were over every province, and to the princes of every people, to every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus, and it was sealed with the king’s ring.

Des lettres furent envoyées par les courriers dans toutes les provinces du roi, pour qu’on détruisit, qu’on égorgeât et qu’on fît périr tous les Juifs, jeunes et vieux, petits enfants et femmes, en un seul jour, le treizième du douzième mois, qui est le mois d’Adar, et qu’on pillât leurs biens. Letters were sent by couriers into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to plunder their possessions.

Une copie de l’édit, qui devait être publié comme loi dans chaque province, fut adressée ouverte à tous les peuples, afin qu’ils fussent prêts pour ce jour-là.
A copy of the letter, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published to all the peoples, that they should be ready against that day.

Les courriers partirent en toute hâte, d’après l’ordre du roi. L’édit fut aussi publié dans Suse la capitale ; et, tandis que le roi et Aman étaient assis à boire, l’agitation régnait dans la ville de Suse.
The couriers went out in haste by the king’s commandment, and the decree was given out in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.

Mardochée, ayant appris tout ce qui se passait, déchira ses vêtements, se revêtit d’un sac et se couvrit la tête de cendre ; puis il alla au milieu de la ville en poussant avec force des gémissements amers.
Now when Mordecai found out all that was done, Mordecai tore his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the middle of the city, and wailed loudly and bitterly.

Et il se rendit jusque devant la porte du roi ; car nulle personne revêtue d’un sac n’avait le droit de franchir la porte du roi.
He came even before the king’s gate, for no one is allowed inside the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth.

Dans chaque province, partout où arrivaient l’ordre du roi et son édit, il y eut un grand deuil parmi les Juifs ; ils jeûnaient, pleuraient et se lamentaient, et le sac et la cendre servaient de couche à beaucoup d’entre eux.
In every province, wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

Les servantes d’Esther et ses eunuques vinrent lui apporter cette nouvelle, et la reine fut très effrayée. Elle envoya des vêtements à Mardochée pour s’en revêtir, afin qu’il ôtât son sac ; mais il ne les accepta pas.
Esther’s maidens and her eunuchs came and told her this, and the queen was exceedingly grieved. She sent clothing to Mordecai, to replace his sackcloth; but he didn’t receive it.

Alors Esther, ayant appelé Athach, l’un des eunuques que le roi avait placés auprès d’elle, le chargea d’aller demander à Mardochée ce que c’était et d’où venait son deuil.
Then Esther called for Hathach, one of the king’s eunuchs, whom he had appointed to attend her, and commanded him to go to Mordecai, to find out what this was, and why it was.

Athach se rendit auprès de Mardochée, qui se tenait sur la place de la ville, devant la porte du roi ;
So Hathach went out to Mordecai, to city square which was before the king’s gate.

et Mardochée lui fit connaître tout ce qui lui était arrivé, et la somme d’argent qu’Aman avait promis de peser pour le trésor du roi en retour du massacre des Juifs.
Mordecai told him of all that had happened to him, and the exact sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the destruction of the Jews.

Il lui remit aussi une copie de l’édit publié dans Suse en vue de leur extermination, afin qu’il le montrât à Esther, lui apprît tout, et lui commandât de se rendre chez le roi afin de le supplier et de lui demander grâce pour son peuple. He also gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given out in Shushan to destroy them, to show it to Esther, and to declare it to her, and to urge her to go in to the king, to make supplication to him, and to make request before him, for her people.

Hathach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

Then Esther spoke to Hathach, and gave him a message to Mordecai:

« Tous les serviteurs du roi et le peuple de ses provinces savent que si quelqu’un, homme ou femme, pénètre chez le roi, dans la cour intérieure, sans avoir été appelé, l’unique loi qu’on lui applique porte peine de mort ; à moins que le roi, lui tendant son sceptre d’or, ne lui donne la vie. Et moi, je n’ai pas été appelée à aller auprès du roi depuis trente jours. »
“All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, know, that whoever, whether man or woman, comes to the king into the inner court without being called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except those to whom the king might hold out the golden scepter, that he may live. Car, si tu te tais maintenant, il surgira d’ailleurs un secours et une délivrance pour les Juifs, et toi et la maison de ton père, vous périrez. Et qui sait si ce n’est pas pour un temps comme celui-ci que tu es parvenue à la dignité royale ? »
For if you remain silent now, then relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Who knows if you haven’t come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Esther fit répondre à Mardochée :
Then Esther asked them to answer Mordecai,

« Va, rassemble tous les Juifs qui se trouvent à Suse, et jeûnez pour moi, sans manger ni boire pendant trois jours, ni la nuit ni le jour. Moi aussi, je jeûnerai de même avec mes servantes, puis j’entrerai chez le roi, malgré la loi ; et si je dois mourir, je mourrai. »
“Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day. I and my maidens will also fast the same way. Then I will go in to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.”

So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.

Lorsque le roi vit la reine Esther debout dans la cour, elle trouva grâce à ses yeux, et le roi tendit à Esther le sceptre d’or qu’il tenait à la main. Esther, s’approchant, toucha le bout du sceptre.
When the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, she obtained favor in his sight; and the king held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. So Esther came near, and touched the top of the scepter.

Et le roi lui dit : « Qu’as-tu, reine Esther, et que demandes-tu ? Quand ce serait la moitié du royaume, elle te serait donnée. »
Then the king asked her, “What would you like, queen Esther? What is your request? It shall be given you even to the half of the kingdom.”

Esther dit : « Si le roi le trouve bon, que le roi vienne aujourd’hui avec Aman au festin que je lui ai préparé. »
Esther said, “If it seems good to the king, let the king and Haman come today to the banquet that I have prepared for him.”

Le roi dit : « Qu’on appelle de suite Aman, pour faire ce qu’a dit Esther. » Le roi se rendit avec Aman au festin qu’Esther avait préparé.
Then the king said, “Bring Haman quickly, so that it may be done as Esther has said.” So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared.

Au festin du vin, le roi dit à Esther : « Quelle est ta demande ? Elle te sera accordée. Que désires-tu ? Quand ce serait la moitié du royaume, tu l’obtiendras. »
The king said to Esther at the banquet of wine, “What is your petition? It shall be granted you. What is your request? Even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.”

Esther répondit et dit : « Voici ma demande et mon désir :
Then Esther answered and said, “My petition and my request is this.

si j’ai trouvé grâce aux yeux du roi et s’il plaît au roi d’accorder ma demande et d’accomplir mon désir, que le roi vienne avec Aman au festin que je leur préparerai, et demain je ferai au roi la réponse qu’il demande. » 2. Chap. v, 9-14 : Joie d’Aman ; sa haine contre Mardochée.
If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and to perform my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I will prepare for them, and I will do tomorrow as the king has said.”

Aman sortit ce jour-là content et le cœur joyeux. Mais lorsqu’il vit, à la porte du roi, Mardochée qui ne se levait ni ne bougeait devant lui, il fut rempli de colère contre Mardochée.
Then Haman went out that day joyful and glad of heart, but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king’s gate, that he didn’t stand up nor move for him, he was filled with wrath against Mordecai.

Aman se contint néanmoins et s’en alla chez lui. Puis, ayant envoyé chercher ses amis et Zarès, sa femme,
Nevertheless Haman restrained himself, and went home. There, he sent and called for his friends and Zeresh his wife.

Aman leur parla de la magnificence de ses richesses, du grand nombre de ses fils, et du haut rang que le roi lui avait conféré, en l’élevant au-dessus de ses princes et de ses serviteurs.
Haman recounted to them the glory of his riches, the multitude of his children, all the things in which the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.

« Je suis même le seul, ajouta-t-il, que la reine Esther ait admis avec le roi au festin qu’elle a préparé, et je suis encore invité pour demain chez elle avec le roi.
Haman also said, “Yes, Esther the queen let no man come in with the king to the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and tomorrow I am also invited by her together with the king.

Mais tout cela ne peut me suffire, aussi longtemps que je verrai Mardochée, le Juif, assis à la porte du roi. »
Yet all this avails me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.”

Zarès, sa femme, et tous ses amis lui dirent : « Qu’on prépare un bois haut de cinquante coudées, et demain matin demande au roi qu’on y pende Mardochée, et tu iras joyeux au festin avec le roi. » Cet avis plut à Aman, et il fit préparer le bois.
Then Zeresh his wife and all his friends said to him, “Let a gallows be made fifty cubits high, and in the morning speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on it. Then go in merrily with the king to the banquet.” This pleased Haman, so he had the gallows made.

On that night, the king couldn’t sleep. He commanded the book of records of the chronicles to be brought, and they were read to the king.

et l’on trouva le récit de la révélation que Mardochée avait faite au sujet de Bagathan et de Tharès, les deux eunuques du roi, gardes du palais, qui avaient voulu porter la main sur le roi Assuérus.
It was found written that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs, who were doorkeepers, who had tried to lay hands on the King Ahasuerus.

Le roi dit : « Quelle marque d’honneur et quelle dignité a-t-on données à Mardochée pour cela ? » — « Il n’en a reçu aucune », répondirent les serviteurs du roi qui étaient en fonction près de lui.
The king said, “What honor and dignity has been given to Mordecai for this?”
Then the king’s servants who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.”

Et le roi dit : « Qui est dans la cour ? » — Or Aman était venu dans la cour extérieure de la maison du roi, pour demander au roi de faire pendre Mardochée au bois qu’il avait préparé pour lui. —
The king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had come into the outer court of the king’s house, to speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.

Les serviteurs du roi lui répondirent : « C’est Aman qui se tient dans la cour. » Et le roi dit : « Qu’il entre ! »
The king’s servants said to him, “Behold, Haman stands in the court.”
The king said, “Let him come in.”

Aman étant entré, le roi lui dit : « Que faut-il faire pour l’homme que le roi veut honorer ? » Aman se dit en lui-même : « Quel autre le roi voudrait-il honorer de préférence à moi ? »
So Haman came in. The king said to him, “What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?”
Now Haman said in his heart, “Who would the king delight to honor more than myself?”

Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor,

il faut prendre un vêtement royal dont le roi s’est revêtu, et un cheval que le roi a monté et sur la tête duquel est posée une couronne royale,
let royal clothing be brought which the king uses to wear, and the horse that the king rides on, and on the head of which a crown royal is set.

remettre ce vêtement et ce cheval à l’un des principaux chefs du roi, puis revêtir l’homme que le roi veut honorer, le promener à cheval à travers la place de la ville, et crier devant lui : C’est ainsi qu’il est fait à l’homme que le roi veut honorer ! »
Let the clothing and the horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that they may array the man whom the king delights to honor with them, and have him ride on horseback through the city square, and proclaim before him, ‘Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!’”

Le roi dit à Aman : « Prends sans tarder le vêtement et le cheval, ainsi que tu l’as dit, et fais ainsi pour Mardochée, le Juif, qui est assis à la porte du roi ; ne néglige rien de tout ce que tu as indiqué. »
Then the king said to Haman, “Hurry and take the clothing and the horse, as you have said, and do this for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Let nothing fail of all that you have spoken.”

Aman prit le vêtement et le cheval, il revêtit Mardochée et le promena à cheval à travers la place de la ville, en criant devant lui : « C’est ainsi que l’on fait à l’homme que le roi veut honorer ! »
Then Haman took the clothing and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and had him ride through the city square, and proclaimed before him, “Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!”

Mardochée retourna à la porte du roi, et Aman se hâta de se rendre chez lui, désolé et la tête voilée.
Mordecai came back to the king’s gate, but Haman hurried to his house, mourning and having his head covered.

Aman raconta à Zarès, sa femme, et à tous ses amis tout ce qui lui était arrivé. Ses sages et sa femme Zarès lui dirent : « Si Mardochée, devant lequel tu as commencé de tomber, est de la race des Juifs, tu ne pourras rien contre lui, mais tu succomberas certainement devant lui. »
Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, “If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him, but you will surely fall before him.”

Comme ils lui parlaient encore, les eunuques du roi arrivèrent et emmenèrent en hâte Aman au festin qu’Esther avait préparé.
While they were yet talking with him, the king’s eunuchs came, and hurried to bring Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared.

The king said again to Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, “What is your petition, queen Esther? It shall be granted you. What is your request? Even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.”

La reine Esther répondit : « Si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ô roi, et si le roi le trouve bon, accorde-moi la vie : voilà ma demande ; accorde-la à mon peuple : voilà mon désir.
Then Esther the queen answered, “If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request.

Car nous sommes vendus, moi et mon peuple, pour être détruits, égorgés, anéantis. Encore si nous étions vendus pour devenir esclaves et servantes, je me tairais ; mais maintenant, l’oppresseur ne peut compenser le dommage fait au roi. »
For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for male and female slaves, I would have held my peace, although the adversary could not have compensated for the king’s loss.”

Le roi Assuérus prenant la parole, dit à la reine Esther : « Qui est-il et où est-il celui que son cœur pousse à agir ainsi ? »
Then King Ahasuerus said to Esther the queen, “Who is he, and where is he who dared presume in his heart to do so?”

Esther répondit : « L’oppresseur, l’ennemi, c’est Aman, ce méchant ! » Aman fut saisi d’effroi en présence du roi et de la reine.
Esther said, “An adversary and an enemy, even this wicked Haman!”
Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

Le roi, dans sa colère, se leva et quitta le festin du vin pour aller dans le jardin du palais ; et Aman resta pour demander grâce de la vie à la reine Esther, car il voyait bien que, du côté du roi, sa perte était assurée.
The king arose in his wrath from the banquet of wine and went into the palace garden. Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.

Lorsque le roi revint du jardin du palais dans la salle du festin du vin, il vit Aman qui s’était prosterné sur le lit sur lequel était Esther ; et le roi dit : « Quoi ! ferait-il violence à la reine chez moi, dans le palais ? » Cette parole était à peine sortie de la bouche du roi qu’on voilà le visage d’Aman.
Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman had fallen on the couch where Esther was. Then the king said, “Will he even assault the queen in front of me in the house?” As the word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face.

Harbona, l’un des eunuques, dit devant le roi : « Voici que le bois préparé par Aman pour Mardochée, qui a parlé pour le bien du roi, est dressé dans la maison d’Aman, à une hauteur de cinquante coudées. » Le roi dit : « Qu’on y pendre Aman ! »
Then Harbonah, one of the eunuchs who were with the king said, “Behold, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman has made for Mordecai, who spoke good for the king, is standing at Haman’s house.”
The king said, “Hang him on it!”

Et l’on pendit Aman au bois qu’il avait préparé pour Mardochée. Et la colère du roi s’apaisa.
So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king’s wrath pacified.

Ce même jour, le roi Assuérus donna à la reine Esther la maison d’Aman, l’ennemi des Juifs, et Mardochée se présenta devant le roi, car Esther avait fait connaître ce qu’il était pour elle.
On that day, King Ahasuerus gave the house of Haman, the Jews’ enemy, to Esther the queen. Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was to her.

Le roi ôta son anneau, qu’il avait repris à Aman, et le donna à Mardochée ; et Esther établit Mardochée sur la maison d’Aman.
The king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

Ensuite Esther parla de nouveau en présence du roi ; se jetant à ses pieds, elle le supplia avec larmes d’écarter les effets de la méchanceté d’Aman, du pays d’Agag, et des projets qu’il avait formés contre les Juifs.
Esther spoke yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and begged him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his plan that he had planned against the Jews.

Le roi tendit le sceptre d’or à Esther, qui se releva et se tint debout devant le roi.
Then the king held out to Esther the golden scepter. So Esther arose, and stood before the king.

« Si le roi le trouve bon, dit-elle, et si j’ai trouvé grâce devant lui, si la chose paraît convenable au roi et si je suis agréable à ses yeux, qu’on écrive pour révoquer les lettres conçues par Aman, fils d’Amadatha, du pays d’Agag, et écrites par lui dans le but de faire périr les Juifs qui sont dans toutes les provinces du roi.
She said, “If it pleases the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and the thing seem right to the king, and I am pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the king’s provinces.

Car comment pourrais-je voir le malheur qui atteindrait mon peuple, et comment pourrais-je voir l’extermination de ma race ? »
For how can I endure to see the evil that would come to my people? How can I endure to see the destruction of my relatives?”

Le roi Assuérus dit à la reine Esther et au Juif Mardochée : « Voici que j’ai donné à Esther la maison d’Aman, et il a été pendu au bois pour avoir étendu la main contre les Juifs.
Then King Ahasuerus said to Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, “See, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged on the gallows, because he laid his hand on the Jews.

Vous, écrivez en faveur des Juifs comme il vous plaira, au nom du roi, et scellez avec l’anneau du roi ; car une lettre écrite au nom du roi et scellée avec l’anneau royal ne peut être révoquée. »
Write also to the Jews, as it pleases you, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s ring; for the writing which is written in the king’s name, and sealed with the king’s ring, may not be reversed by any man.”

Les secrétaires du roi furent alors appelés, le vingt-troisième jour du troisième mois, qui est le mois de Sivan, et l’on écrivit, conformément à tout ce qu’ordonna Mardochée, aux Juifs, aux satrapes, aux gouverneurs et aux chefs des provinces, des cent vingt-sept provinces situées de l’Inde à l’Éthiopie, à chaque province selon son écriture, à chaque peuple selon sa langue, et aux Juifs selon leur écriture et selon leur langue.
Then the king’s scribes were called at that time, in the third month, which is the month Sivan, on the twenty-third day of the month; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded to the Jews, and to the satraps, and the governors and princes of the provinces which are from India to Ethiopia, one hundred twenty-seven provinces, to every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language, and to the Jews in their writing, and in their language.

On écrivit au nom du roi Assuérus, et l’on scella avec l’anneau royal. On expédia les lettres par l’intermédiaire de courriers à cheval, montés sur des coursiers de l’État, provenant des haras du roi.
He wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, and sealed it with the king’s ring, and sent letters by courier on horseback, riding on royal horses that were bred from swift steeds.

Par ces lettres, le roi permettait aux Juifs, en quelque ville qu’ils fussent, de se rassembler et de défendre leur vie, de détruire, de tuer et de faire périr, avec leurs petits enfants et leurs femmes, les troupes de chaque peuple et de chaque province qui les attaqueraient, et de livrer leurs biens au pillage,
In those letters, the king granted the Jews who were in every city to gather themselves together, and to defend their life, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, their little ones and women, and to plunder their possessions,

A copy of the letter, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published to all the peoples, that the Jews should be ready for that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.

Aussitôt les courriers, montés sur des coursiers de l’État, partirent en toute hâte, d’après l’ordre du roi. L’édit fut aussi publié dans Suse, la capitale. 5. So the couriers who rode on royal horses went out, hastened and pressed on by the king’s commandment. The decree was given out in the citadel of Susa.

Mardochée sortit de chez le roi avec un vêtement royal bleu et blanc, une grande couronne d’or, et un manteau de byssus et de pourpre ; et la ville de Suse témoignait sa joie par des cris d’allégresse.
Mordecai went out of the presence of the king in royal clothing of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a robe of fine linen and purple; and the city of Susa shouted and was glad.

Il n’y avait pour les Juifs que bonheur et joie, jubilation et gloire.
The Jews had light, gladness, joy, and honor.

Dans chaque province et dans chaque ville, partout où arrivaient l’ordre du roi et son édit, il y eut pour les Juifs de la joie et de l’allégresse, des festins et des fêtes. Et beaucoup de gens d’entre les peuples du pays se firent Juifs, car la crainte des Juifs les avait saisis.
In every province, and in every city, wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness, joy, a feast, and a good day. Many from among the peoples of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews was fallen on them.

Au douzième mois, qui est le mois d’Adar, le treizième jour du mois, où devaient s’exécuter l’ordre et l’édit du roi, jour où les ennemis des Juifs avaient espéré dominer sur eux, ce fut le contraire qui arriva, et les Juifs dominèrent sur leurs ennemis.
Now in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the month, when the king’s commandment and his decree came near to be put in execution, on the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to conquer them, (but it was turned out the opposite happened, that the Jews conquered those who hated them),

Les Juifs se rassemblèrent dans leurs villes, dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus, pour frapper ceux qui cherchaient leur perte, et personne ne put leur résister, car la crainte qu’ils inspiraient s’était répandue chez tous les peuples.
the Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, to lay hands on those who wanted to harm them. No one could withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen on all the people.

Tous les chefs des provinces, les satrapes, les gouverneurs, les fonctionnaires du roi soutinrent les Juifs, car la crainte de Mardochée pesait sur eux.
All the princes of the provinces, the satraps, the governors, and those who did the king’s business helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them.

Car Mardochée était puissant dans la maison du roi, et sa renommée se répandait dans toutes les provinces, car cet homme, Mardochée, allait toujours grandissant.
For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces; for the man Mordecai grew greater and greater.

Les Juifs frappèrent donc à coup d’épée tous leurs ennemis ; ce fut un massacre et une destruction ; ils traitèrent comme il leur plut ceux qui leur étaient hostiles.
The Jews struck all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they wanted to those who hated them.

Dans Suse, la capitale, les Juifs tuèrent et firent périr cinq cents hommes,
In the citadel of Susa, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.

On that day, the number of those who were slain in the citadel of Susa was brought before the king.

Et le roi dit à la reine Esther : « Les Juifs ont tué et fait périr dans Suse, la capitale, cinq cents hommes et les dix fils d’Aman ; que n’auront-ils pas fait dans le reste des provinces du roi ?… Quelle est ta demande ? Elle te sera accordée. Quel est ton désir ? Il sera accompli. »
The king said to Esther the queen, “The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in the citadel of Susa, including the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted you. What is your further request? It shall be done.”

Esther répondit : « Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’il soit permis aux Juifs qui sont à Suse d’agir encore demain selon le décret d’aujourd’hui, et que l’on pende au bois des dix fils d’Aman. »
Then Esther said, “If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according to today’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.”

The king commanded this to be done. A decree was given out in Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

The Jews who were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and killed three hundred men in Shushan; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

The other Jews who were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, defended their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

This was done on the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of that month they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

But the Jews who were in Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth and on the fourteenth days of the month; and on the fifteenth day of that month, they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

C’est pourquoi les Juifs de la campagne, qui habitent des villes sans murailles, font du quatorzième jour du mois d’Adar un jour de joie, de festin et de fête, où l’on s’envoie des portions les uns aux autres.
Therefore the Jews of the villages, who live in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, a good day, and a day of sending presents of food to one another.

Mardochée écrivit ces choses, et il envoya des lettres à tous les Juifs qui étaient dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus, à ceux qui étaient près comme à ceux qui étaient loin,
Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both near and far,

to enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month Adar yearly,

as the days in which the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned to them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a good day; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending presents of food to one another, and gifts to the needy.

Car Aman, fils d’Amadatha, du pays d’Agag, ennemi de tous les Juifs, avait formé contre les Juifs le projet de les perdre et il avait jeté le PUR, c’est-à-dire le sort, afin de les exterminer et de les détruire.
because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast “Pur”, that is the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them;

Mais Esther s’étant présentée devant le roi, celui-ci ordonna par écrit de faire retomber sur la tête d’Aman le méchant projet qu’il avait formé contre les Juifs, et on le pendit au bois avec ses fils.
but when this became known to the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked plan, which he had planned against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

C’est pourquoi on appela ces jours PURIM, du nom de PUR. Ainsi, d’après tout le contenu de cette lettre, d’après ce qu’ils en avaient eux-mêmes vu et ce qui leur était arrivé,
Therefore they called these days “Purim”, from the word “Pur.” Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come to them,

the Jews established, and imposed on themselves, and on their descendants, and on all those who joined themselves to them, so that it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to what was written, and according to its appointed time, every year;

Ces jours devaient être rappelés et célébrés, de génération en génération, dans chaque famille, dans chaque province et dans chaque ville, et ces jours des PURIM ne devaient jamais être abolis au milieu des Juifs, ni le souvenir s’en effacer dans leur postérité.
and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor their memory perish from their offspring,

For Mordecai the Jew was next to King Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted by the multitude of his brothers, seeking the good of his people, and speaking peace to all his descendants.
