Oracles of the eighth-century southern prophet Amos, addressed to the northern kingdom on the eve of the Assyrian conquest. The book is sustained by a fierce concern for social justice and ritual integrity.

The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

Il dit : Yahweh rugira de Sion ; de Jérusalem il fera entendre sa voix ; les pâturages des bergers seront en deuil, et le sommet du Carmel sera desséché.
He said:
“Yahweh will roar from Zion,
and utter his voice from Jerusalem;
and the pastures of the shepherds will mourn,
and the top of Carmel will wither.”

Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Damascus, yes, for four,
I will not turn away its punishment;
because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron;

but I will send a fire into the house of Hazael,
and it will devour the palaces of Ben Hadad.

je briserai le verrou de Damas, j’exterminerai de Biqath-Aven l’habitant, et de Beth-Eden, celui qui tient le sceptre ; et le peuple de Syrie ira captif à Qir, dit Yahweh.
I will break the bar of Damascus,
and cut off the inhabitant from the valley of Aven,
and him who holds the scepter from the house of Eden;
and the people of Syria shall go into captivity to Kir,”
says Yahweh.

Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Gaza, yes, for four,
I will not turn away its punishment;
because they carried away captive the whole community,
to deliver them up to Edom;

but I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza,
and it will devour its palaces.

j’exterminerai d’Azot l’habitant, et d’Ascalon celui qui tient le sceptre, et je tournerai ma main sur Accaron ; et le reste des Philistins périra, dit le Seigneur Yahweh.
I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod,
and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
and I will turn my hand against Ekron;
and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,”
says the Lord Yahweh.

“For three transgressions of Tyre, yes, for four,
I will not turn away its punishment;
because they delivered up the whole community to Edom,
and didn’t remember the brotherly covenant;

but I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre,
and it will devour its palaces.”

Ainsi parle Yahweh : À cause de trois crimes d’Édom, et à cause de quatre, — je ne le révoquerai point. Parce qu’il a poursuivi son frère avec le glaive, et qu’il a étouffé sa compassion, et parce que sa colère déchire à jamais, et qu’il garde jusqu’à la fin sa rancune,
Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Edom, yes, for four,
I will not turn away its punishment;
because he pursued his brother with the sword,
and cast off all pity,
and his anger raged continually,
and he kept his wrath forever;

j’enverrai le feu dans Théman, et il dévorera les palais de Bosra.
but I will send a fire on Teman,
and it will devour the palaces of Bozrah.”

Ainsi parle Yahweh : À cause de trois crimes des enfants d’Ammon, et à cause de quatre, — je ne le révoquerai point. Parce qu’ils ont fendu le ventre des femmes enceintes de Galaad, afin d’élargir leur frontière,
Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, yes, for four,
I will not turn away its punishment;
because they have ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead,
that they may enlarge their border.

j’allumerai un feu sur le mur de Rabbah, et il dévorera ses palais, au milieu des cris de guerre d’un jour de bataille, au milieu du tourbillon d’un jour de tempête.
But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah,
and it will devour its palaces,
with shouting in the day of battle,
with a storm in the day of the whirlwind;

Et leur roi s’en ira en captivité, lui et ses princes avec lui, dit Yahweh.
and their king will go into captivity,
he and his princes together,”
says Yahweh.

I will not turn away its punishment;
because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime;

j’enverrai le feu dans Moab, et il dévorera les palais de Carioth ; et Moab mourra au milieu du tumulte, des cris de guerre, du son de la trompette.
but I will send a fire on Moab,
and it will devour the palaces of Kerioth;
and Moab will die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet;

and I will cut off the judge from among them,
and will kill all its princes with him,”
says Yahweh.

Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Judah, yes, for four,
I will not turn away its punishment;
because they have rejected Yahweh’s law,
and have not kept his statutes,
and their lies have led them astray,
after which their fathers walked;

j’enverrai le feu en Juda, et il dévorera les palais de Jérusalem.
but I will send a fire on Judah,
and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem.”

Ainsi parle Yahweh : À cause de trois crimes d’Israël, et à cause de quatre, — je ne le révoquerai point. Parce qu’ils vendent le juste à prix d’argent, et l’indigent à cause d’une paire de sandales ;
Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four,
I will not turn away its punishment;
because they have sold the righteous for silver,
and the needy for a pair of shoes;

parce qu’ils aspirent à voir la poussière de la terre sur la tête des misérables, et qu’ils font fléchir la voie des petits ; parce que le fils et son père vont vers la même fille, pour profaner mon saint nom ;
They trample on the dust of the earth on the head of the poor,
and deny justice to the oppressed;
and a man and his father use the same maiden, to profane my holy name;

parce qu’ils s’étendent sur des vêtements reçus en gage, à côté de tous les autels, et qu’ils boivent le vin de ceux qu’ils ont frappés d’amende, dans la maison de leur Dieu.
and they lay themselves down beside every altar on clothes taken in pledge;
and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.

Et pourtant j’avais détruit devant eux l’Amorrhéen, dont la hauteur était comme celle des cèdres, et qui était fort comme les chênes ; j’avais détruit son fruit en haut, et ses racines en bas.
Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them,
whose height was like the height of the cedars,
and he was strong as the oaks;
yet I destroyed his fruit from above,
and his roots from beneath.

Et pourtant je vous avais fait monter du pays d’Égypte, et je vous avais conduits quarante ans dans le désert, pour vous mettre en possession du pays de l’Amorrhéen.
Also I brought you up out of the land of Egypt,
and led you forty years in the wilderness,
to possess the land of the Amorite.

J’avais suscité parmi vos fils des prophètes, et parmi vos jeunes gens des nazaréens, — n’en est-il pas ainsi, enfants d’Israël ? — oracle de Yahweh.
I raised up some of your sons for prophets,
and some of your young men for Nazirites.
Isn’t this true,
you children of Israel?” says Yahweh.

Mais vous avez fait boire du vin aux nazaréens et vous avez donné cet ordre aux prophètes : « Ne prophétisez pas » !
“But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink,
and commanded the prophets, saying, ‘Don’t prophesy!’

Voici que je vais vous fouler, comme foule la terre un chariot, quand il est rempli de gerbes.
Behold, I will crush you in your place,
as a cart crushes that is full of grain.
14
La fuite manquera à l’homme agile, et le vigoureux ne trouvera plus sa force ; et le vaillant ne sauvera pas sa vie,
Flight will perish from the swift;
and the strong won’t strengthen his force;
neither shall the mighty deliver himself;
15
et celui qui manie l’arc ne résistera pas ; et l’homme aux pieds agiles ne se sauvera pas, et le cavalier ne sauvera pas sa vie.
neither shall he stand who handles the bow;
and he who is swift of foot won’t escape;
neither shall he who rides the horse deliver himself;
16
Et le plus courageux d’entre les braves s’enfuira tout nu en ce jour-là, — oracle de Yahweh.
and he who is courageous among the mighty will flee away naked on that day,”
says Yahweh.

Écoutez cette parole que Yahweh a prononcée sur vous, enfants d’Israël, « sur toute la famille que j’ai fait monter du pays d’Égypte », — en ces termes :
Hear this word that Yahweh has spoken against you, children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying:

Je n’ai connu que vous seuls parmi toutes les familles de la terre ; c’est pourquoi je vous punirai de toutes vos iniquités.
“I have only chosen you of all the families of the earth.
Therefore I will punish you for all of your sins.”

Deux hommes marchent-ils ensemble, sans qu’ils se soient accordés ?
Do two walk together,
unless they have agreed?

Le lion rugit-il dans la forêt, sans avoir une proie ? Le lionceau fait-il retentir sa voix du fond de sa tanière, sans qu’il ait rien pris ?
Will a lion roar in the thicket,
when he has no prey?
Does a young lion cry out of his den,
if he has caught nothing?

Le passereau tombe-t-il dans le filet à terre, sans qu’il y ait un appât pour lui ! Le filet se lève-t-il du sol, sans qu’il ait pris quelque chose ?
Can a bird fall in a trap on the earth,
where no snare is set for him?
Does a snare spring up from the ground,
when there is nothing to catch?

Sonne-t-on de la trompette dans une ville, sans que le peuple s’épouvante ? Arrive-t-il un malheur dans une ville, sans que Yahweh en soit l’auteur ?
Does the trumpet alarm sound in a city,
without the people being afraid?
Does evil happen to a city,
and Yahweh hasn’t done it?

Car le Seigneur Yahweh ne fait rien sans qu’il ait révélé son secret à ses serviteurs, les prophètes.
Surely the Lord Yahweh will do nothing,
unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets.

Le lion a rugi : qui ne craindrait ? Le Seigneur Yahweh a parlé : qui ne prophétiserait ?
The lion has roared.
Who will not fear?
The Lord Yahweh has spoken.
Who can but prophesy?

Faites entendre cette parole sur les palais dans Azot, et sur les palais dans la terre d’Égypte, et dites : Rassemblez-vous sur les montagnes de Samarie, et voyez quels nombreux désordres sont au milieu d’elle, et quelles violences dans son sein.
Proclaim in the palaces at Ashdod,
and in the palaces in the land of Egypt,
and say, “Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria,
and see what unrest is in her,
and what oppression is among them.”

Et ils ne savent pas agir avec droiture, — oracle de Yahweh, eux qui entassent la violence et le pillage dans leurs palais.
“Indeed they don’t know to do right,” says Yahweh,
“Who hoard plunder and loot in their palaces.”

C’est pourquoi ainsi parle le Seigneur Yahweh : Voici l’ennemi, il enserre le pays ; il te dépouillera de ta force, et tes palais seront pillés.
Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh:
“An adversary will overrun the land;
and he will pull down your strongholds,
and your fortresses will be plundered.”

Ainsi parle Yahweh : Comme le berger arrache de la gueule du lion deux jarrets ou un bout d’oreille, ainsi seront sauvés les enfants d’Israël, qui sont assis à Samarie, au coin d’un divan, sur des coussins de Damas.
Yahweh says:
“As the shepherd rescues out of the mouth of the lion two legs,
or a piece of an ear,
so shall the children of Israel be rescued who sit in Samaria on the corner of a couch,
and on the silken cushions of a bed.”

Écoutez, et attestez ceci dans la maison de Jacob, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh, le Dieu des armées :
“Listen, and testify against the house of Jacob,” says the Lord Yahweh, the God of Armies.

Le jour où je vengerai sur lui les transgressions d’Israël, je vengerai aussi les autels de Béthel ; les cornes de l’autel seront brisées, et elles tomberont à terre.
“For in the day that I visit the transgressions of Israel on him,
I will also visit the altars of Bethel;
and the horns of the altar will be cut off,
and fall to the ground.

Je frapperai la maison d’hiver, avec la maison d’été ; les maisons d’ivoire seront dévastées, et de nombreuses maisons seront détruites, — oracle de Yahweh.
I will strike the winter house with the summer house;
and the houses of ivory will perish,
and the great houses will have an end,”
says Yahweh.

Écoutez cette parole, vaches de Basan, qui êtes sur la montagne de Samarie, vous qui opprimez les faibles, et qui foulez les indigents, vous qui dites à vos maris : « Apportez et buvons ! »
Listen to this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who tell their husbands, “Bring us drinks!”

Le Seigneur Yahweh a juré par sa sainteté : Voici que des jours viendront sur vous où l’on vous enlèvera avec des crocs, et votre postérité avec des harpons.
The Lord Yahweh has sworn by his holiness that behold,
“The days shall come on you that they will take you away with hooks,
and the last of you with fish hooks.

Vous sortirez par les brèches, chacune devant soi, et vous serez jetées en Armon, — oracle de Yahweh. 3. Chap. iv, 4-13 : Illusions religieuses d’Israël. — Égarés par la régularité et le luxe de leurs cérémonies (iv, 4, 5), les Israélites n’ont pas compris les divers châtiments dont Dieu les a frappés (iv, 6-11) : qu’ils s’apprêtent donc à subir le châtiment suprême (iv, 12, 13) !
You will go out at the breaks in the wall,
everyone straight before her;
and you will cast yourselves into Harmon,” says Yahweh.

Venez à Béthel et péchez, à Galgala, et multipliez vos péchés ! Amenez chaque matin vos sacrifices, et tous les trois jours vos dîmes !
“Go to Bethel, and sin;
to Gilgal, and sin more.
Bring your sacrifices every morning,
your tithes every three days,

Faites fumer l’oblation de louange sans levain ; annoncez des dons volontaires, publiez-les ! Car c’est cela que vous aimez, enfants d’Israël, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh.
offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which is leavened,
and proclaim free will offerings and brag about them:
for this pleases you, you children of Israel,” says the Lord Yahweh.

Aussi je vous ai procuré la netteté des dents en toutes vos villes, et la disette de pain dans toutes vos demeures ; et vous n’êtes pas revenus à moi, — oracle de Yahweh.
“I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
and lack of bread in every town;
yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.

Aussi je vous ai retenu la pluie, lorsqu’il y avait encore trois mois avant la moisson ; j’ai fait pleuvoir sur une ville, et je ne faisais pas pleuvoir sur une autre ville ; une région était arrosée par la pluie, et une autre région, sur laquelle il ne pleuvait pas, se desséchait.
“I also have withheld the rain from you,
when there were yet three months to the harvest;
and I caused it to rain on one city,
and caused it not to rain on another city.
One place was rained on,
and the piece where it didn’t rain withered.

Deux, trois villes couraient à une autre ville, pour boire de l’eau, et ne se désaltéraient pas ; et vous n’êtes pas revenus à moi, — oracle de Yahweh.
So two or three cities staggered to one city to drink water,
and were not satisfied:
yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.

Je vous ai frappés par la rouille et la nielle ; vos nombreux jardins, vos vignes, vos figuiers et vos oliviers, la sauterelle les a dévorés ; et vous n’êtes pas revenus à moi, — oracle de Yahweh.
“I struck you with blight and mildew many times in your gardens and your vineyards;
and your fig trees and your olive trees have the swarming locust devoured:
yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.

J’ai envoyé parmi vous la peste, à la manière d’Égypte ; j’ai tué par l’épée vos jeunes gens, pendant que vos chevaux étaient capturés ; j’ai fait monter la puanteur de votre camp, et elle est arrivée à vos narines ; et vous n’êtes pas revenus à moi, — oracle de Yahweh.
“I sent plagues among you like I did Egypt.
I have slain your young men with the sword,
and have carried away your horses;
and I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camp,
yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.

J’ai causé en vous des bouleversements, comme Dieu a bouleversé Sodome et Gomorrhe, et vous avez été comme un tison arraché de l’incendie ; et vous n’êtes pas revenus à moi, — oracle de Yahweh.
“I have overthrown some of you,
as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,
and you were like a burning stick plucked out of the fire;
yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.

C’est pourquoi, ainsi te ferai-je, Israël ! Puisque je te ferai cela, prépare-toi à la rencontre de ton Dieu, Israël !
“Therefore thus will I do to you, Israel;
because I will do this to you,
prepare to meet your God, Israel.

Car c’est lui qui a formé les montagnes, et qui a créé le vent, qui fait connaître à l’homme quelle est sa pensée, qui fait de l’aurore les ténèbres, et qui marche sur les sommets de la terre ! Yahweh, le Dieu des armées, est son nom.
For, behold, he who forms the mountains,
and creates the wind,
and declares to man what is his thought;
who makes the morning darkness,
and treads on the high places of the earth:
Yahweh, the God of Armies, is his name.”

Écoutez cette parole, que je profère sur vous, — une lamentation, — maison d’Israël :
Listen to this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Israel.

Elle est tombée, elle ne se relèvera plus, la vierge d’Israël ! Elle est renversée sur sa terre, personne ne la relèvera.
“The virgin of Israel has fallen;
She shall rise no more.
She is cast down on her land;
there is no one to raise her up.”

Car ainsi parle Yahweh : La ville qui se mettait en campagne avec mille guerriers en gardera cent ; celle qui se mettait en campagne avec cent en gardera dix, pour la maison d’Israël.
For thus says the Lord Yahweh:
“The city that went out a thousand shall have a hundred left,
and that which went out one hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.”

Car ainsi parle Yahweh à la maison d’Israël : Cherchez-moi et vivez !
For Yahweh says to the house of Israel:
“Seek me, and you will live;
5
Ne cherchez pas Béthel, ne venez pas à Galgala, ne passez pas à Bersabée ! Car Galgala sera emmené captif, et Béthel deviendra néant.
but don’t seek Bethel,
nor enter into Gilgal,
and don’t pass to Beersheba:
for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity,
and Bethel shall come to nothing.

Cherchez Yahweh et vivez, de peur qu’il ne fonde, comme un feu, sur la maison de Joseph, et ne la dévore, sans que Béthel ait personne pour éteindre.
Seek Yahweh, and you will live;
lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph,
and it devour, and there be no one to quench it in Bethel.

Ils changent le droit en absinthe, et jettent à terre la justice !
You who turn justice to wormwood,
and cast down righteousness to the earth:

Il a fait les Pléiades et Orion ; il change en aurore les ténèbres, et le jour en une nuit obscure ; il appelle les eaux de la mer, et les répand sur la face de la terre ; Yahweh est son nom.
seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion,
and turns the shadow of death into the morning,
and makes the day dark with night;
who calls for the waters of the sea,
and pours them out on the surface of the earth, Yahweh is his name,

Il fait éclater la ruine sur le puissant, et la ruine fond sur la ville forte.
who brings sudden destruction on the strong,
so that destruction comes on the fortress.

Ils haïssent à la Porte celui qui censure ; et celui qui parle avec intégrité, ils l’ont en horreur.
They hate him who reproves in the gate,
and they abhor him who speaks blamelessly.

C’est pourquoi, parce que vous foulez aux pieds le pauvre, et que vous prélevez sur lui un tribut de blé ; vous avez bâti des maisons en pierres de taille, et vous n’y habiterez pas, vous avez planté des vignes excellentes, et vous n’en boirez pas le vin.
Therefore, because you trample on the poor,
and take taxes from him of wheat:
You have built houses of cut stone,
but you will not dwell in them.
You have planted pleasant vineyards,
but you shall not drink their wine.

Car je sais que nombreux sont vos crimes, que grands sont vos péchés, vous qui opprimez le juste, qui prenez des présents, et qui faites fléchir le droit des pauvres à la Porte.
For I know how many your offenses,
and how great are your sins—
you who afflict the just,
who take a bribe,
and who turn away the needy in the courts.

C’est pourquoi l’homme sage, en ce temps-ci, se tait ; car c’est un temps mauvais.
Therefore a prudent person keeps silent in such a time,
for it is an evil time.

Cherchez le bien et non le mal, afin que vous viviez, et qu’ainsi Yahweh, le Dieu des armées, soit avec vous, comme vous le dites.
Seek good, and not evil,
that you may live;
and so Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be with you,
as you say.
15
Haïssez le mal et aimez le bien, et restaurez le droit à la Porte : peut-être Yahweh, le Dieu des armées, aura-t-il pitié du reste de Joseph !
Hate evil, love good,
and establish justice in the courts.
It may be that Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”

C’est pourquoi ainsi parle Yahweh, le Dieu des armées, le Seigneur : Dans toutes les places, on se lamentera ; dans toutes les rues on dira : Hélas ! hélas ! On appellera le laboureur au deuil, et aux lamentations, avec ceux qui savent gémir.
Therefore Yahweh, the God of Armies, the Lord, says:
“Wailing will be in all the wide ways;
and they will say in all the streets, ‘Alas! Alas!’
and they will call the farmer to mourning,
and those who are skillful in lamentation to wailing.

Dans toutes les vignes on se lamentera ; car je passerai au milieu de toi, dit Yahweh. 5. Chap, v, 18-27 : Le jour de Yahweh. — Attendu par beaucoup comme un jour de triomphe, il sera un jour de malheur (v, 18-20). De nouveau l’illusion des rites purement extérieurs (v, 21-25). Traces d’idolâtrie (v, 20). La captivité au delà de Damas (v, 27).
In all vineyards there will be wailing;
for I will pass through the middle of you,” says Yahweh.

Malheur à ceux qui désirent le jour de Yahweh ! Que sera-t-il pour vous, le jour de Yahweh ? Il sera ténèbres, et non lumière.

Why do you long for the day of Yahweh?
It is darkness,
and not light.

Comme un homme qui s’enfuit devant le lion, et l’ours vient à sa rencontre ; il entre dans sa maison, appuie sa main sur le mur, et le serpent le mord !…
As if a man fled from a lion,
and a bear met him;
Or he went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall,
and a snake bit him.

N’est-il pas ténèbres, le jour de Yahweh, et non lumière, obscurité, sans aucun éclat ?
Won’t the day of Yahweh be darkness, and not light?
Even very dark, and no brightness in it?

Je hais, je dédaigne vos fêtes, je n’ai aucun goût à vos assemblées.
I hate, I despise your feasts,
and I can’t stand your solemn assemblies.

Si vous m’offrez vos holocaustes et vos oblations, je n’y prends pas plaisir, et vos sacrifices de veaux engraissés, je ne les regarde pas.
Yes, though you offer me your burnt offerings and meal offerings,
I will not accept them;
neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat animals.

Éloigne de moi le bruit de tes cantiques ; que je n’entende pas le son de tes harpes !
Take away from me the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.

Mais que le jugement coule comme l’eau, et la justice comme un torrent qui ne tarit pas !
But let justice roll on like rivers,
and righteousness like a mighty stream.

Des sacrifices et des oblations m’en avez-vous offert, dans le désert pendant quarante ans, maison d’Israël ?
“Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, house of Israel?

Vous avez porté la tente de votre roi, et Kijoum, vos idoles, l’étoile de votre dieu, que vous vous êtes fabriqué.
You also carried the tent of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.
27
Je vous déporterai par delà Damas, dit Yahweh ; Dieu des armées est son nom.
Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus,” says Yahweh, whose name is the God of Armies.

Malheur à ceux qui vivent tranquilles dans Sion, et en sécurité sur la montagne de Samarie, les plus nobles du premier des peuples, auprès desquels va la maison d’Israël !
Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,
and to those who are secure on the mountain of Samaria,
the notable men of the chief of the nations,
to whom the house of Israel come!

Passez à Calné et voyez ; allez de là à Hamath la grande ; descendez à Geth des Philistins ; Ces villes sont-elles plus prospères que ces royaumes, et leur territoire est-il plus étendu que le vôtre ?
Go to Calneh, and see;
and from there go to Hamath the great;
then go down to Gath of the Philistines.
are they better than these kingdoms?
or is their border greater than your border?

Vous éloignez le jour du malheur, et vous faites approcher le règne de la violence !
Those who put far away the evil day,
and cause the seat of violence to come near;

Ils sont couchés sur des lits d’ivoire, et s’étendent sur leurs divans ; ils mangent les agneaux du troupeau, et les veaux engraissés dans l’étable.
Who lie on beds of ivory,
and stretch themselves on their couches,
and eat the lambs out of the flock,
and the calves out of the middle of the stall;

Ils folâtrent au son de la harpe ; comme David, ils ont inventé des instruments de musique.
who strum on the strings of a harp;
who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David;

Ils boivent le vin dans de larges coupes, ils se parfument avec les huiles les plus exquises. Et ils ne sont pas malades de la plaie de Joseph.
who drink wine in bowls,
and anoint themselves with the best oils;
but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
7
C’est pourquoi ils iront en exil, à la tête des captifs, et les cris de joie des voluptueux disparaîtront.
Therefore they will now go captive with the first who go captive;
and the feasting and lounging will end.

Le Seigneur Yahweh l’a juré par lui-même, – oracle de Yahweh, le Dieu des armées : J’ai en abomination l’orgueil de Jacob, et je hais ses palais ; je livrerai la ville et ce qu’elle renferme.
“The Lord Yahweh has sworn by himself,” says Yahweh, the God of Armies:
“I abhor the pride of Jacob,
and detest his fortresses.
Therefore I will deliver up the city with all that is in it.

Et s’il reste dix hommes dans une seule maison, ils mourront.
It will happen, if there remain ten men in one house,
that they shall die.

Un parent avec celui qui brûle les cadavres enlèvera le mort, et emportera de la maison les ossements ; et l’un dira à celui qui est au fond de la maison : « Y en a-t-il encore avec toi ? » Il répondra : « Plus personne ! » Et le premier dira : « Silence ! » Car il ne faut pas prononcer le nom de Yahweh.
“When a man’s relative carries him, even he who burns him, to bring bodies out of the house, and asks him who is in the innermost parts of the house, ‘Is there yet any with you?’ And he says, ‘No;’ then he will say, ‘Hush! Indeed we must not mention Yahweh’s name.’

“For, behold, Yahweh commands, and the great house will be smashed to pieces,
and the little house into bits.

Les chevaux courent-ils sur le rocher, où y laboure-t-on avec des bœufs, que vous avez changé le droit en poison, et le fruit de la justice en absinthe ?
Do horses run on the rocky crags?
Does one plow there with oxen?
But you have turned justice into poison,
and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness;

Vous vous réjouissez de ce qui n’est rien, vous dites : « N’est-ce pas par notre force que nous avons acquis de la puissance ? »
you who rejoice in a thing of nothing, who say,
‘Haven’t we taken for ourselves horns by our own strength?’

Car voici que je suscite contre vous, maison d’Israël, — oracle de Yahweh, le Dieu des armées ! — une nation qui vous opprimera depuis l’entrée de Hamath jusqu’au torrent du désert.
For, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, house of Israel,”
says Yahweh, the God of Armies;
“and they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of the Arabah.”

Ainsi me fit voir le Seigneur Yahweh, et voici qu’il formait des sauterelles, au commencement de la pousse des regains ; c’était le regain après la coupe du roi.
Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me: and behold, he formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and behold, it was the latter growth after the king’s harvest.

Quand elles eurent achevé de dévorer l’herbe de la terre, je dis : « Seigneur Yahweh, daignez pardonner ! Comment Jacob tiendra-t-il ? Car il est petit. »
When they finished eating the grass of the land, then I said, “Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.”

Et Yahweh se repentit de cela : « Cela ne sera pas », dit Yahweh.
Yahweh relented concerning this. “It shall not be,” says Yahweh.

Ainsi me fit voir le Seigneur Yahweh, et voici que le Seigneur Yahweh venait châtier par le feu, et le feu dévorait le grand abîme, et il dévorait la portion du Seigneur.
Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me and behold, the Lord Yahweh called for judgment by fire; and it dried up the great deep, and would have devoured the land.

Et je dis : « Seigneur Yahweh, daignez cesser ! Comment Jacob tiendra-t-il ? Car il est petit. »
Then I said, “Lord Yahweh, stop, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.”

Yahweh se repentit : « Cela non plus ne sera pas », dit le Seigneur Yahweh.
Yahweh relented concerning this. “This also shall not be,” says the Lord Yahweh.

Ainsi me fit voir Yahweh, et voici que le Seigneur se tenait sur un mur vertical, et il avait dans sa main un fil à plomb.
Thus he showed me and behold, the Lord stood beside a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.

Et Yahweh me dit : « Que vois-tu, Amos ? » Je répondis : « Un fil à plomb. » Et le Seigneur me dit : « Voici que je mets le fil à plomb au milieu de mon peuple d’Israël ; je ne lui pardonnerai pas plus longtemps.
Yahweh said to me, “Amos, what do you see?”
I said, “A plumb line.”
Then the Lord said, “Behold, I will set a plumb line in the middle of my people Israel. I will not again pass by them any more.

Les hauts lieux d’Isaac seront dévastés, et les sanctuaires d’Israël seront détruits, et je me lèverai contre la maison de Jéroboam, avec l’épée. »
The high places of Isaac will be desolate, the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”

Et Amasias, prêtre de Béthel, envoya dire à Jéroboam, roi d’Israël : « Amos conspire contre toi au milieu de la maison d’Israël ; le pays ne peut plus supporter toutes ses paroles.
Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the middle of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words.

Car Amos a parlé ainsi : Jéroboam mourra par l’épée, et Israël sera emmené captif hors de son pays. »
For Amos says, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.’”

Et Amasias dit à Amos : « Voyant, va-t-en, fuis au pays de Juda, et manges-y ton pain ; là tu prophétiseras.
Amaziah also said to Amos, “You seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

Mais ne continue pas de prophétiser à Béthel, car c’est un sanctuaire du roi, et c’est une maison royale ».
but don’t prophesy again any more at Bethel; for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a royal house!”

Amos répondit et dit à Amasias : « Je ne suis pas un prophète, je ne suis pas un fils de prophète ; je suis bouvier et je cultive les sycomores.
Then Amos answered Amaziah, “I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was a herdsman, and a farmer of sycamore figs;

Et Yahweh m’a pris derrière le troupeau, et Yahweh m’a dit : Va, prophétise à mon peuple d’Israël.
and Yahweh took me from following the flock, and Yahweh said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

Et maintenant, écoute la parole de Yahweh : Tu dis : Tu ne prophétiseras pas contre Israël, et tu ne parleras pas contre la maison d’Isaac !…
Now therefore listen to Yahweh’s word: ‘You say, Don’t prophesy against Israel, and don’t preach against the house of Isaac.’

C’est pourquoi ainsi parle Yahweh : Ta femme sera prostituée dans la ville, tes fils et tes filles tomberont par l’épée, ta terre sera partagée au cordeau ; et toi, tu mourras sur une terre impure, et Israël sera emmené captif hors de sa terre. »
Therefore Yahweh says: ‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by line; and you yourself shall die in a land that is unclean, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.’”

Ainsi me fit voir le Seigneur Yahweh, et voici une corbeille de fruits mûrs.
Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit.

Et il dit : « Que vois-tu, Amos ? » Je répondis : « Une corbeille de fruits mûrs. » Et Yahweh me dit : « La fin est venue pour mon peuple d’Israël ; je ne lui pardonnerai pas plus longtemps.
He said, “Amos, what do you see?”
I said, “A basket of summer fruit.”
Then Yahweh said to me,
“The end has come on my people Israel.
I will not again pass by them any more.

Les chants du palais seront des hurlements en ce jour-là, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh. Il y aura de nombreux cadavres, en tout lieu on les jette en silence. » 2. The songs of the temple will be wailings in that day,” says the Lord Yahweh.
“The dead bodies will be many. In every place they will throw them out with silence.

Écoutez ceci, vous qui engloutissez le pauvre, et qui voudriez faire disparaître les humbles du pays,
Hear this, you who desire to swallow up the needy,
and cause the poor of the land to fail,

en disant : « Quand la nouvelle lune sera-t-elle passée, afin que nous puissions vendre du froment, et le sabbat, pour que nous ouvrions nos magasins à blé, en diminuant l’épha et en grossissant le sicle, en faussant la balance pour tromper ?
Saying, ‘When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain?
And the Sabbath, that we may market wheat,
making the ephah small, and the shekel large,
and dealing falsely with balances of deceit;

Nous achèterons pour de l’argent les misérables, et les pauvres à cause d’une paire de sandales, et nous vendrons la criblure du froment ? »
that we may buy the poor for silver,
and the needy for a pair of shoes,
and sell the sweepings with the wheat?’”

Yahweh l’a juré par l’orgueil de Jacob : Je n’oublierai pas jusqu’à la fin toutes leurs actions.
Yahweh has sworn by the pride of Jacob,
“Surely I will never forget any of their works.
8
À cause de cela, la terre ne tremblera-t-elle pas, et tous ses habitants ne seront-ils pas dans le deuil ? Elle montera tout entière comme le Nil, elle se soulèvera et s’affaissera, comme le Nil d’Égypte.
Won’t the land tremble for this,
and everyone mourn who dwells in it?
Yes, it will rise up wholly like the River;
and it will be stirred up and sink again, like the River of Egypt.

Il arrivera en ce jour-là, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh, je ferai coucher le soleil en plein midi, et j’envelopperai la terre de ténèbres en un jour serein.
It will happen in that day,” says the Lord Yahweh,
“that I will cause the sun to go down at noon,
and I will darken the earth in the clear day.

Je changerai vos fêtes en deuil, et tous vos chants de joie en lamentations ; je mettrai le sac sur tous les reins, et je rendrai chauve toute tête ; je mettrai le pays comme en un deuil de fils unique, et sa fin sera comme un jour amer.
I will turn your feasts into mourning,
and all your songs into lamentation;
and I will make you wear sackcloth on all your bodies,
and baldness on every head.
I will make it like the mourning for an only son,
and its end like a bitter day.

Voici que des jours viennent, — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh, et j’enverrai une faim sur la terre, non une faim de pain, et non une soif d’eau, mais d’entendre les paroles de Yahweh.
Behold, the days come,” says the Lord Yahweh,
“that I will send a famine in the land,
not a famine of bread,
nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing Yahweh’s words.

Et ils erreront d’une mer à l’autre, et du septentrion à l’orient ; ils iront de côté et d’autre pour chercher la parole de Yahweh, et ils ne la trouveront pas.
They will wander from sea to sea,
and from the north even to the east;
they will run back and forth to seek Yahweh’s word,
and will not find it.

En ces jours-là seront épuisés les belles vierges et les jeunes hommes, par la soif.
In that day the beautiful virgins
and the young men will faint for thirst.
14
Ceux qui jurent par le péché de Samarie et disent : « Par la vie de ton Dieu, ô Dan ! Par la voie de Bersabée ! » tomberont et ne se relèveront pas.
Those who swear by the sin of Samaria,
and say, ‘As your god, Dan, lives;’
and, ‘As the way of Beersheba lives;’
they will fall, and never rise up again.”

Je vis le Seigneur debout près de l’autel, et il dit : « Frappe le chapiteau, et que les seuils soient ébranlés, et brise-les sur leurs têtes à tous ! Et ce qui restera, je l’égorgerai par l’épée ; pas un ne se sauvera, pas un n’échappera.
I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said, “Strike the tops of the pillars, that the thresholds may shake; and break them in pieces on the head of all of them; and I will kill the last of them with the sword: there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them escape.

S’ils pénètrent jusqu’au schéol, ma main les en retirera ; s’ils montent aux cieux, je les en ferai descendre.
Though they dig into Sheol, there my hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, there I will bring them down.

S’ils se cachent au sommet du Carmel, je les y chercherai et les prendrai ; et s’ils se dérobent à mes yeux au fond de la mer, là je commanderai au serpent de les mordre.
Though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out there; and though they be hidden from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent, and it will bite them.

Et s’ils s’en vont en captivité devant leurs ennemis, là je commanderai à l’épée de les égorger. Et je fixerai mon œil sur eux, pour le malheur et non pour le bien. »
Though they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword, and it will kill them. I will set my eyes on them for evil, and not for good.

Le Seigneur Yahweh des armées, touche la terre et elle se fond, et tous ses habitants sont en deuil ; elle monte tout entière comme le Nil, et s’affaisse comme le fleuve d’Égypte.
For the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, is he who touches the land and it melts, and all who dwell in it will mourn; and it will rise up wholly like the River, and will sink again, like the River of Egypt.

Il construit ses degrés dans le ciel, et fonde sa voûte sur la terre ; il appelle les eaux de la mer, et il les répand sur la face de la terre : Yahweh est son nom.
It is he who builds his rooms in the heavens, and has founded his vault on the earth; he who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the surface of the earth; Yahweh is his name.

N’êtes-vous pas pour moi comme les fils des Cuschites, enfants d’Israël, — oracle de Yahweh ? N’ai-je pas fait monter Israël du pays d’Égypte, et les Philistins de Caphtor, et les Syriens de Qir ? 4. Are you not like the children of the Ethiopians to me, children of Israel?” says Yahweh. “Haven’t I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

Voici que les yeux du Seigneur Yahweh sont fixés sur le royaume pécheur, et je le détruirai de dessus la face de la terre ; toutefois je ne détruirai pas entièrement la maison de Jacob, — oracle de Yahweh.
Behold, the eyes of the Lord Yahweh are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the surface of the earth; except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,” says Yahweh.

Car voici que je vais donner des ordres, et je secouerai la maison d’Israël parmi toutes les nations, comme on secoue le blé avec le crible, et le bon grain ne tombera pas à terre.
“For, behold, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet not the least kernel will fall on the earth.

Tous les pécheurs de mon peuple périront par l’épée, eux qui disent : « Le malheur ne s’approchera pas de nous, le malheur ne nous atteindra pas. »
All the sinners of my people will die by the sword, who say, ‘Evil won’t overtake nor meet us.’

En ce jour-là, je relèverai la hutte de David qui est tombée ; je réparerai ses brèches, je relèverai ses ruines, et je la rebâtirai telle qu’aux jours d’autrefois,
In that day I will raise up the tent of David who is fallen, and close up its breaches, and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old;

afin qu’ils possèdent le reste d’Édom, et toutes les nations sur lesquelles mon nom a été invoqué, — oracle de Yahweh, qui fait ces choses.
that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations who are called by my name,” says Yahweh who does this.

Voici que des jours viennent, — oracle de Yahweh, et le laboureur joindra le moissonneur, et celui qui foule les grappes joindra celui qui répand la semence ; les montagnes dégoutteront de vin nouveau, et toutes les collines ruisselleront.
“Behold, the days come,” says Yahweh,
“that the plowman shall overtake the reaper,
and the one treading grapes him who sows seed;
and sweet wine will drip from the mountains,
and flow from the hills.

Je ramènerai les captifs de mon peuple d’Israël ; ils bâtiront les villes dévastées et les habiteront, ils planteront les vignes et en boiront le vin, ils feront des jardins et en mangeront les fruits.
I will bring my people Israel back from captivity,
and they will rebuild the ruined cities, and inhabit them;
and they will plant vineyards, and drink wine from them.
They shall also make gardens,
and eat their fruit.

Et je les planterai sur leur sol, et ils ne seront plus jamais arrachés de leur terre, que je leur ai donnée, dit Yahweh, ton Dieu.
I will plant them on their land,
and they will no more be plucked up out of their land which I have given them,”
says Yahweh your God.
