Genealogies and a priestly retelling of David's reign

A post-exilic re-narration of Israel's history opening with extensive genealogies from Adam onward. Its account of David emphasizes the temple cult, the Levites, and the dynastic promise rather than the political and personal turbulence highlighted by Samuel.

Hukok with its suburbs, and Rehob with its suburbs;

To the rest of the Levites, the sons of Merari, were given, out of the tribe of Zebulun, Rimmono with its suburbs, Tabor with its suburbs;

and beyond the Jordan at Jericho, on the east side of the Jordan, were given them, out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer in the wilderness with its suburbs, and Jahzah with its suburbs,

Kedemoth with its suburbs, and Mephaath with its suburbs;

and out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its suburbs, Mahanaim with its suburbs,

Heshbon with its suburbs, and Jazer with its suburbs.

Fils d’Esec, son frère : Ulam, son premier-né, Jéhus le deuxième, et Eliphalet le troisième.

The sons of Eshek his brother: Ulam his firstborn, Jeush the second, and Eliphelet the third.

Les fils d’Ulam furent de vaillants hommes, tirant de l’arc, et ils eurent beaucoup de fils, et de petits-fils, cent cinquante. Tous ceux-là sont des fils de Benjamin.

The sons of Ulam were mighty men of valor, archers, and had many sons, and sons’ sons, one hundred fifty. All these were of the sons of Benjamin.

Chapitre 9

Ainsi tout Israël fut enregistré dans les généalogies, et voici qu’ils sont inscrits dans le livre des rois d’Israël ; et Juda fut emmené captif à Babylone à cause de ses transgressions.

So all Israel were listed by genealogies; and behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel. Judah was carried away captive to Babylon for their disobedience.

Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his brothers, of his father’s house, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the thresholds of the tent. Their fathers had been over Yahweh’s camp, keepers of the entry.

Phinées, fils d’Eléazar, avait été autrefois leur chef, et Yahweh était avec lui.

Phinehas the son of Eleazar was ruler over them in time past, and Yahweh was with him.

Zacharie, fils de Mosollamia, était portier à l’entrée de la tente de réunion.

Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was gatekeeper of the door of the Tent of Meeting.

All these who were chosen to be gatekeepers in the thresholds were two hundred twelve. These were listed by genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer ordained in their office of trust.

So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of Yahweh’s house, even the house of the tent, by wards.

On the four sides were the gatekeepers, toward the east, west, north, and south.

They stayed around God’s house, because that duty was on them; and to their duty was its opening morning by morning.

Moza became the father of Binea; and Rephaiah his son, Eleasah his son, and Azel his son.

Asel eut six fils, dont voici les noms : Ezricam, Bocru, Ismaël, Saria, Obdia et Hanan. Ce sont là les Fils d’Asel.

Azel had six sons, whose names are these: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.

Chapitre 10

Les Philistins ayant livré bataille à Israël, les hommes d’Israël prirent la fuite devant les Philistins, et tombèrent blessés à mort sur la montagne de Gelboé.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa.

Les Philistins s’attachèrent à poursuivre Saül et ses fils, et les Philistins tuèrent Jonathas, Abinadab et Melchisua, fils de Saül.

The Philistines followed hard after Saul and after his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.

L’effort du combat se porta sur Saül ; les archers l’ayant découvert, il eut grandement peur des archers.

The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was distressed by reason of the archers.

Alors Saül dit à son écuyer : « Tire ton épée et m’en transperce, de peur que ces incirconcis ne viennent m’outrager. » L’écuyer ne le voulut pas faire, car il était saisi de crainte ; alors Saül prit son épée et se jeta dessus.

Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me.” But his armor bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it.

L’écuyer, voyant que Saül était mort, se jeta aussi sur son épée, et mourut.

When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword, and died.

Ainsi périrent Saül et ses trois fils, et toute sa maison périt en même temps.

So Saul died with his three sons; and all his house died together.

Tous les hommes d’Israël qui étaient dans la plaine, voyant que les enfants d’Israël s’étaient enfuis, et que Saül et ses fils étaient morts, abandonnèrent leurs villes et prirent aussi la fuite ; et les Philistins vinrent et s’y établirent.

When all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them.

Le lendemain, les Philistins vinrent pour dépouiller les morts, et ils trouvèrent Saül et ses fils gisant sur la montagne de Gelboé.

On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

L’ayant dépouillé, ils emportèrent sa tête et ses armes ; puis ils envoyèrent publier cette bonne nouvelle par tout le pays des Philistins, devant leurs idoles et le peuple.

They stripped him, and took his head and his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines all around, to carry the news to their idols, and to the people.

Ils mirent les armes de Saül dans la maison de leur dieu, et ils attachèrent son crâne dans le temple de Dagon.

They put his armor in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the house of Dagon.

Tout Jabès en Galaad ayant appris tout ce que les Philistins avaient fait à Saül,

When all Jabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

tous les vaillants hommes se levèrent, prirent le corps de Saül et les corps de ses fils, et les transportèrent à Jabès. Ils enterrèrent leurs os sous le térébinthe, à Jabès, et ils jeûnèrent sept jours.

all the valiant men arose, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

Saül mourut à cause de la transgression dont il s’était rendu coupable envers Yahweh, parce qu’il n’avait pas observé la parole de Yahweh, et pour avoir interrogé et consulté ceux qui évoquent les morts.

So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against Yahweh, because of Yahweh’s word, which he didn’t keep; and also because he asked counsel of one who had a familiar spirit, to inquire,

Il ne consulta point Yahweh, et Yahweh le fit mourir, et il transféra la royauté à David, fils d’Isaï.

and didn’t inquire of Yahweh. Therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

Chapitre 11

Tout Israël s’assembla auprès de David à Hébron, en disant : « Voici que nous sommes tes os et ta chair.

Then all Israel gathered themselves to David to Hebron, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.

Autrefois déjà, quand Saül était roi, c’était toi qui menais et ramenais Israël. Et Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’a dit : C’est toi qui paîtras mon peuple d’Israël, et c’est toi qui seras chef sur mon peuple d’Israël. »

In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. Yahweh your God said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’”

Ainsi tous les anciens d’Israël vinrent auprès du roi à Hébron, et David fit alliance avec eux devant Yahweh, à Hébron ; et ils oignirent David pour roi sur Israël, selon la parole de Yahweh prononcée par Samuel. 3. Chap. xi, 4-9 : Siège et prise de Jérusalem.

So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Yahweh; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to Yahweh’s word by Samuel.

David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (also called Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there.

The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here.” Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion. The same is David’s city.

David said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain.” Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and was made chief.

David lived in the stronghold; therefore they called it David’s city.

Il bâtit la ville tout autour, à partir du Mello et aux environs, et Joab répara le reste de la ville.

He built the city all around, from Millo even around; and Joab repaired the rest of the city.

David grew greater and greater; for Yahweh of Armies was with him.

Now these are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who showed themselves strong with him in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to Yahweh’s word concerning Israel.

Voici le nombre des héros qui étaient au service de David : Jesbaam, fils de Hachamoni, chef des Trente. Il brandit sa lance sur trois cents hommes, qu’il fit périr en une seule fois.

This is the number of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty; he lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them at one time.

After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men.

Il était avec David à Phes-Domim, et les Philistins s’y étaient rassemblés pour combattre. Il y avait là une pièce de terre pleine d’orge, et le peuple fuyait devant les Philistins.

He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where there was a plot of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines.

Ils se placèrent au milieu du champ, le défendirent et battirent les Philistins ; et Yahweh opéra une grande délivrance.

They stood in the middle of the plot, defended it, and killed the Philistines; and Yahweh saved them by a great victory.

Trois d’entre les trente capitaines descendirent auprès de David sur le rocher, à la caverne d’Odollam, tandis que le camp des Philistins était dressé dans la vallée des Réphaïm.

Three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the army of the Philistines were encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was in Bethlehem at that time.

The three broke through the army of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David; but David would not drink any of it, but poured it out to Yahweh,

en disant : « Que mon Dieu me garde de faire cela ! Boirais-je le sang de ces hommes avec leur vie ? Car c’est au péril de leur vie qu’ils l’ont apportée. « Et il ne voulut pas la boire. Voilà ce que firent ces trois braves.

and said, “My God forbid me, that I should do this! Shall I drink the blood of these men who have put their lives in jeopardy?” For they risked their lives to bring it. Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.

Abisaï, frère de Joab, était chef des Trois ; il brandit sa lance contre trois cents hommes et les tua, et il eut du renom parmi les trois.

Abishai, the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three; for he lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them, and had a name among the three.

Il était le plus considéré de la seconde triade, et il fut leur chef ; mais il n’égala pas les trois premiers.

Of the three, he was more honorable than the two, and was made their captain; however he wasn’t included in the three.

Banaïas, fils de Joïada, fils d’un homme vaillant et riche en exploits, de Cabséel. Il frappa les deux ariels de Moab. Il descendit et frappa le lion au milieu de la citerne un jour de neige.

Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle of a pit on a snowy day.

Il frappa un Égyptien d’une stature de cinq coudées ; et dans la main de l’Égyptien, il y avait une lance semblable à une ensouple de tisserand. Il descendit vers lui avec un bâton, et il arracha la lance de la main de l’Égyptien et le frappa de sa propre lance.

He killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high. In the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.

Voilà ce que fit Banaïas, fils de Joïada, et il eut du renom parmi les trois vaillants.

Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did these things, and had a name among the three mighty men.

Behold, he was more honorable than the thirty, but he didn’t attain to the three; and David set him over his guard.

Now these are those who came to David to Ziklag, while he was a fugitive from Saul the son of Kish. They were among the mighty men, his helpers in war.

They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in slinging stones and in shooting arrows from the bow. They were of Saul’s relatives of the tribe of Benjamin.

Some of the children of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David.

David went out to meet them, and answered them, “If you have come peaceably to me to help me, my heart will be united with you; but if you have come to betray me to my adversaries, since there is no wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers see this and rebuke it.”

Then the Spirit came on Amasai, who was chief of the thirty, and he said, “We are yours, David, and on your side, you son of Jesse. Peace, peace be to you, and peace be to your helpers; for your God helps you.” Then David received them, and made them captains of the band.

Some of Manasseh also joined David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle; but they didn’t help them; for the lords of the Philistines sent him away after consultation, saying, “He will desert to his master Saul to the jeopardy of our heads.”

As he went to Ziklag, some from Manasseh joined him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, captains of thousands who were of Manasseh.

They helped David against the band of rovers; for they were all mighty men of valor, and were captains in the army.

For from day to day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army, like God’s army.

These are the numbers of the heads of those who were armed for war, who came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to Yahweh’s word.

The children of Judah who bore shield and spear were six thousand eight hundred, armed for war.

Fils de Juda, portant le bouclier et la lance, six mille huit cents, armés pour la guerre. —

Of the children of Simeon, mighty men of valor for the war, seven thousand one hundred.

Jehoiada was the leader of the household of Aaron; and with him were three thousand seven hundred,

Of the children of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their heads were two hundred; and all their brothers were at their command.

Of Zebulun, such as were able to go out in the army, who could set the battle in array, with all kinds of instruments of war, fifty thousand, and who could command and were not of double heart.

Of Naphtali one thousand captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty-seven thousand.

Of the Danites who could set the battle in array, twenty-eight thousand six hundred.

On the other side of the Jordan, of the Reubenites, the Gadites, and of the half-tribe of Manasseh, with all kinds of instruments of war for the battle, one hundred twenty thousand.

All these were men of war, who could order the battle array, and came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.

They were there with David three days, eating and drinking; for their brothers had supplied provisions for them.

Ils furent là trois jours avec David, mangeant et buvant, car leurs frères leur avaient préparé des provisions.

Moreover those who were near to them, as far as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, brought bread on donkeys, on camels, on mules, and on oxen: supplies of flour, cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, wine, oil, cattle, and sheep in abundance; for there was joy in Israel.

Chapitre 13

David tint conseil avec les chefs de milliers et de centaines, avec tous les princes.

David consulted with the captains of thousands and of hundreds, even with every leader.

Et David dit à toute l’assemblée d’Israël : « Si vous le trouvez bon et si cela paraît venir de Yahweh, notre Dieu, envoyons au plus vite vers le reste de nos frères, dans toutes les contrées d’Israël, et aussi vers les prêtres et les lévites dans les villes où sont leurs pâturages, afin qu’ils se réunissent à nous,

David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if it is of Yahweh our God, let us send word everywhere to our brothers who are left in all the land of Israel, with whom the priests and Levites are in their cities that have suburbs, that they may gather themselves to us.

et que nous ramenions auprès de nous l’arche de notre Dieu, car nous ne nous en sommes pas occupés dans les jours de Saül. »

Also, let us again bring the ark of our God back to us; for we didn’t seek it in the days of Saul.”

Toute l’assemblée dit de faire ainsi, la chose ayant paru convenable aux yeux de tout le peuple.

All the assembly said that they would do so; for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.

David assembla donc tout Israël, depuis le Sihor d’Égypte jusqu’à l’entrée d’Emath, pour faire venir de Cariathiarim l’arche de Dieu.

So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor the brook of Egypt even to the entrance of Hamath, to bring God’s ark from Kiriath Jearim.

Et David, avec tout Israël, monta à Baala, à Cariathiarim, qui est à Juda, pour faire monter de là l’arche de Dieu, de Yahweh qui siège sur les Chérubins, sur laquelle le Nom est invoqué.

David went up with all Israel to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath Jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from there God Yahweh’s ark that sits above the cherubim, that is called by the Name.

Ils placèrent sur un chariot neuf l’arche de Dieu, et l’emmenèrent de la maison d’Abinadab : Oza et Ahio conduisaient le chariot.

They carried God’s ark on a new cart, and brought it out of Abinadab’s house; and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.

David et tout Israël dansaient devant Dieu de toute leur force, en chantant, et en jouant des harpes, des luths, des tambourins, des cymbales et des trompettes.

David and all Israel played before God with all their might, even with songs, with harps, with stringed instruments, with tambourines, with cymbals, and with trumpets.

Lorsqu’ils furent arrivés à l’aire de Chidon, Oza étendit la main pour saisir l’arche, parce que les bœufs avaient fait un faux pas.

When they came to Chidon’s threshing floor, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled.

La colère de Yahweh s’enflamma contre Oza, et Yahweh le frappa, parce qu’il avait étendu la main sur l’arche ; et Oza mourut là, devant Dieu.

Yahweh’s anger burned against Uzza, and he struck him, because he put his hand on the ark; and he died there before God.

David fut fâché de ce que Yahweh avait ainsi porté un coup à Oza ; et ce lieu a été appelé jusqu’à ce jour Phéréts-Oza.

David was displeased, because Yahweh had broken out against Uzza. He called that place Perez Uzza, to this day.

David eut peur de Dieu en ce jour-là, et il dit : « Comment ferais-je venir vers moi l’arche de Dieu ? »

David was afraid of God that day, saying, “How can I bring God’s ark home to me?”

David ne retira pas l’arche chez lui, dans la cité de David, et il la fit conduire dans la maison d’Obédédom de Geth.

So David didn’t move the ark with him into David’s city, but carried it aside into Obed-Edom the Gittite’s house.

L’arche de Dieu resta trois mois avec la famille d’Obédédom, dans sa maison ; et Yahweh bénit la maison d’Obédédom et tout ce qui lui appartenait.

God’s ark remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house three months; and Yahweh blessed Obed-Edom’s house and all that he had.

Chapitre 14

Hiram, roi de Tyr, envoya des messagers à David, avec du bois de cèdre, ainsi que des tailleurs de pierres et des charpentiers, pour lui bâtir une maison.

Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, masons, and carpenters, to build him a house.

Et David reconnut que Yahweh l’affermissait comme roi sur Israël, car son royaume était haut élevé, à cause de son peuple d’Israël.

David perceived that Yahweh had established him king over Israel; for his kingdom was exalted on high, for his people Israel’s sake.

David prit encore des femmes à Jérusalem et il engendra encore des fils et des filles.

David took more wives at Jerusalem, and David became the father of more sons and daughters.

These are the names of the children whom he had in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

Jébahar, Elisua, Eliphalet,

Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,

Noga, Népheg, Japhia,

Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,

Elisama, Baaiada et Eliphalet.

Les Philistins apprirent que David avait été oint pour roi sur tout Israël ; alors tous les Philistins montèrent pour rechercher David. David l’apprit, et il sortit au-devant d’eux.

When the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went out against them.

Les Philistins, étant venus, se précipitèrent dans la vallée des Rephaïm.

Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the valley of Rephaim.

David consulta Dieu, en disant : « Monterai-je contre les Philistins ? Les livrerez-vous entre mes mains ? » Et Yahweh lui dit : « Monte, et je les livrerai entre tes mains. »

David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?” Yahweh said to him, “Go up; for I will deliver them into your hand.”

Ils montèrent à Baal-Pharasim, et là David les battit. Et David dit : « Dieu a brisé mes ennemis par ma main, comme les eaux brisent les digues. « C’est pourquoi on a donné à ce lieu le nom de Baal-Pharasim.

So they came up to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there. David said, God has broken my enemies by my hand, like waters breaking out. Therefore they called the name of that place Baal Perazim.

Ils laissèrent là leurs dieux. Et David dit qu’on les livre au feu.

They left their gods there; and David gave a command, and they were burned with fire.

The Philistines made a another raid in the valley.

David consulta encore Dieu, et Dieu lui dit : « Ne monte pas après eux ; détourne-toi d’eux, et tu arriveras sur eux du côté des balsamiers.

David inquired again of God; and God said to him, “You shall not go up after them. Turn away from them, and come on them opposite the mulberry trees.

Quand tu entendras un bruit de pas dans les cimes des balsamiers, alors tu sortiras pour combattre, car Dieu sortira devant toi pour battre l’armée des Philistins. »

When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then go out to battle; for God has gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.”

David fit comme Dieu le lui ordonnait, et ils battirent l’armée des Philistins depuis Gabaon jusqu’à Gazer.

David did as God commanded him; and they attacked the army of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gezer.

The fame of David went out into all lands; and Yahweh brought the fear of him on all nations.

Chapitre 15

Il se fit des maisons dans la cité de David, et il prépara une place à l’arche de Dieu, et dressa pour elle une tente.

David made himself houses in David’s city; and he prepared a place for God’s ark, and pitched a tent for it.

Alors David dit : « Il n’y a pour porter l’arche de Dieu que les lévites ; car ce sont eux que Yahweh a choisis pour porter l’arche de Dieu et pour en faire le service à jamais. »

Then David said, “No one ought to carry God’s ark but the Levites. For Yahweh has chosen them to carry God’s ark, and to minister to him forever.”

David assembla tout Israël à Jérusalem, pour faire monter l’arche de Yahweh à sa place, qu’il lui avait préparée.

David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem, to bring up Yahweh’s ark to its place, which he had prepared for it.

David réunit les fils d’Aaron et les lévites :

David gathered together the sons of Aaron and the Levites:

des fils de Caath, Uriel le chef et ses frères, cent vingt ;

of the sons of Kohath, Uriel the chief, and his brothers one hundred twenty;

des fils de Mérari, Asaïa le chef et ses frères, deux cent vingt ;

of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, and his brothers two hundred twenty;

des fils de Gersom, Joël le chef et ses frères, cent trente ;

of the sons of Gershom, Joel the chief, and his brothers one hundred thirty;

des fils d’Elisaphan, Séméïas le chef et ses frères, deux cents ;

of the sons of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the chief, and his brothers two hundred;

des fils d’Hébron, Eliel le chef et ses frères, quatre-vingts ;

of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief, and his brothers eighty;

des fils d’Oziel, Aminadab le chef et ses frères, cent douze.

David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab,

and said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers’ households of the Levites. Sanctify yourselves, both you and your brothers, that you may bring the ark of Yahweh, the God of Israel, up to the place that I have prepared for it.

Parce que ce ne fut pas vous, la première fois, Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous a frappés ; car nous ne l’avions pas cherché selon la loi. »

For because you didn’t carry it at first, Yahweh our God broke out in anger against us, because we didn’t seek him according to the ordinance.”

Les prêtres et les lévites se sanctifièrent pour faire monter l’arche de Yahweh, Dieu d’Israël.

So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of Yahweh, the God of Israel.

Et les fils de Lévi, comme l’avait ordonné Moïse d’après la parole de Yahweh, portèrent l’arche de Dieu sur leurs épaules avec les barres.

The children of the Levites bore God’s ark on their shoulders with its poles, as Moses commanded according to Yahweh’s word.

David dit aux chefs des lévites d’établir leurs frères les chantres avec des instruments de musique, des cithares, des harpes et des cymbales, pour faire retentir des sons éclatants et joyeux.

David spoke to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers with instruments of music, stringed instruments, harps, and cymbals, sounding aloud and lifting up their voices with joy.

Les lévites établirent Héman, fils de Joël, et, parmi ses frères, Asaph, fils de Barachias ; parmi les fils de Mérari, leurs frères, Ethan, fils de Cusaïa ;

So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brothers, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari their brothers, Ethan the son of Kushaiah;

et, avec eux, leurs frères du second ordre, Zacharie, Ben, Jaziel, Sémiramoth, Jahiel, Ani, Eliab, Banaïas, Maasias, Mathathias, Eliphalu, Macénias, Obédédom et Jéhiel, les portiers.

and with them their brothers of the second rank, Zechariah, Ben, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel, the doorkeepers.

So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were given cymbals of brass to sound aloud;

and Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with stringed instruments set to Alamoth;

Mathathias, Eliphalu, Macénias, Obédédom, Jéhiel et Ozaziu avaient des harpes à l’octave inférieure, pour présider au chant.

and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps tuned to the eight-stringed lyre, to lead.

Chonénias, chef des lévites pour le transport, dirigeait le transport, car il s’y entendait.

Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was over the singing. He taught the singers, because he was skillful.

When God helped the Levites who bore the ark of Yahweh’s covenant, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.

Thus all Israel brought the ark of Yahweh’s covenant up with shouting, with sound of the cornet, with trumpets, and with cymbals, sounding aloud with stringed instruments and harps.

Lorsque l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh fut arrivée jusqu’à la cité de David, Michol, fille de Saül, regarda par la fenêtre et voyant le roi David bondir et danser, elle le méprisa dans son cœur.

As the ark of Yahweh’s covenant came to David’s city, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David dancing and playing; and she despised him in her heart.

Chapitre 16

Après qu’on eut fait entrer l’arche de Dieu, et qu’on l’eut déposée au milieu de la tente que David avait dressée pour elle, on offrit devant Dieu des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques.

They brought in God’s ark, and set it in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God.

Quand David eut achevé d’offrir les holocaustes et les sacrifices pacifiques, il bénit le peuple au nom de Yahweh.

When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in Yahweh’s name.

Puis il distribua à tous ceux d’Israël, hommes et femmes, à chacun un pain, une portion de viande et un gâteau de raisins.

He gave to everyone of Israel, both man and woman, to everyone a loaf of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins.

Il établit devant l’arche de Yahweh des lévites pour faire le service, en invoquant, en célébrant et en louant Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël.

He appointed some of the Levites to minister before Yahweh’s ark, and to commemorate, to thank, and to praise Yahweh, the God of Israel:

C’étaient : Asaph, le chef ; Zacharie, le second ; puis Jahiel, Sémiramoth, Jéhiel, Mathathias, Eliab, Banaïas, Obédédom et Jéhiel, avec des cithares et des harpes pour instruments ; et Asaph faisait retentir les cymbales ;

Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel, with stringed instruments and with harps; and Asaph with cymbals, sounding aloud;

les prêtres Banaïas et Jaziel sonnaient continuellement de la trompette devant l’arche de l’alliance de Dieu.

with Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually, before the ark of the covenant of God.

Ce fut en ce jour que David établit pour la première fois qu’on célébrerait Yahweh par l’organe d’Asaph et de ses frères :

Then on that day David first ordained to give thanks to Yahweh, by the hand of Asaph and his brothers.

Louez Yahweh, invoquez son nom, faites connaître ses œuvres parmi les peuples.

Oh give thanks to Yahweh. Call on his name. Make what he has done known among the peoples.

Chantez en son honneur, chantez des psaumes en son honneur, racontez toutes ses merveilles.

Sing to him. Sing praises to him. Tell of all his marvelous works.

Glorifiez-vous dans son saint nom ; que se réjouisse le cœur de ceux qui cherchent Yahweh !

Glory in his holy name. Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh rejoice.

Recherchez Yahweh et sa force ; cherchez continuellement sa face.

Seek Yahweh and his strength. Seek his face forever more.

Souvenez-vous des prodiges qu’il a faits, de ses miracles et des jugements de sa bouche,

Remember his marvelous works that he has done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth,

race d’Israël, son serviteur, enfants de Jacob, ses élus.

you offspring of Israel his servant, you children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

Lui, Yahweh, est notre Dieu ; ses jugements s’exercent sur toute la terre.

He is Yahweh our God. His judgments are in all the earth.

Souvenez-vous à jamais de son alliance. — la parole qu’il a dite pour mille générations.

Remember his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations,

De l’alliance qu’il a conclue avec Abraham, et de son serment à Isaac,

the covenant which he made with Abraham, his oath to Isaac.

qu’il a érigé pour Jacob en loi, pour Israël en alliance éternelle,

He confirmed the same to Jacob for a statute, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,

disant : « À toi je donnerai le pays de Chanaan, comme la part de votre héritage. »

saying, “I will give you the land of Canaan, The lot of your inheritance,”

Alors que vous étiez faciles à compter, en petit nombre et étrangers dans le pays,

when you were but a few men in number, yes, very few, and foreigners were in it.

qu’ils erraient d’une nation à l’autre, et d’un royaume vers un autre peuple,

They went about from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people.

Il ne permit à personne de les opprimer, et il châtia des rois à cause d’eux ;

He allowed no man to do them wrong. Yes, he reproved kings for their sakes,

« Ne touchez pas à mes oints, et ne faites pas de mal à mes prophètes ! »

“Don’t touch my anointed ones! Do my prophets no harm!”

Chantez à Yahweh, habitants de toute la terre ; annoncez de jour en jour son salut.

Sing to Yahweh, all the earth! Display his salvation from day to day.

Racontez parmi les nations sa gloire, parmi tous les peuples ses merveilles.

Declare his glory among the nations, and his marvelous works among all the peoples.

Car Yahweh est grand et très digne de louange, il est redoutable par-dessus tous les dieux ;

For great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised. He also is to be feared above all gods.

car tous les dieux des peuples sont des idoles. Et Yahweh a fait les cieux ;

For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but Yahweh made the heavens.

la majesté et la splendeur sont devant sa face ; la force et la joie sont dans sa demeure.

Honor and majesty are before him. Strength and gladness are in his place.

Rendez à Yahweh, familles des peuples, rendez à Yahweh gloire et puissance,

Ascribe to Yahweh, you relatives of the peoples, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength!

rendez à Yahweh gloire pour son nom. Apportez des offrandes et venez en sa présence ; adorez Yahweh dans de saints ornements,

Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due to his name. Bring an offering, and come before him. Worship Yahweh in holy array.

tremblez devant lui, habitants de toute la terre. Et le monde affermi ne chancellera point.

Tremble before him, all the earth. The world also is established that it can’t be moved.

Que les cieux se réjouissent et que la terre soit dans l’allégresse ! Qu’on dise parmi les nations : « Yahweh est roi ! »

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice! Let them say among the nations, “Yahweh reigns!”

Que la mer retentisse avec ce qu’elle contient ! Que les champs tressaillent avec tout ce qu’ils renferment !

Let the sea roar, and its fullness! Let the field exult, and all that is in it!

Que les arbres de la forêt poussent des cris joyeux, devant Yahweh, car il vient pour juger la terre !

Then the trees of the forest will sing for joy before Yahweh, for he comes to judge the earth.

Célébrez Yahweh, car il est bon, car sa miséricorde dure à jamais.

Oh give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

Dites : « Sauve-nous, Dieu de notre salut ; rassemble-nous et retire-nous du milieu des nations, afin que nous célébrions ton saint nom, et que nous mettions notre gloire en ta louange. »

Say, “Save us, God of our salvation! Gather us together and deliver us from the nations, to give thanks to your holy name, to triumph in your praise.”

Béni soit Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, d’éternité en éternité ! Et tout le peuple dit : « Amen ! » et : « Louez Yahweh. »

Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from everlasting even to everlasting. All the people said, “Amen,” and praised Yahweh.

David laissa là, devant l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh, Asaph et ses frères pour faire continuellement le service devant l’arche, selon la tâche de chaque jour ;

So he left Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of Yahweh’s covenant, to minister before the ark continually, as every day’s work required;

de même Obédédom avec ses frères, au nombre de soixante-huit, Obédédom, fils d’Idithun, et Hosa, comme portiers ;

and Obed-Edom with their brothers, sixty-eight; Obed-Edom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be doorkeepers;

de même, le prêtre Sadoc et les prêtres, ses frères, devant la Demeure de Yahweh sur le haut lieu qui était à Gabaon,

and Zadok the priest, and his brothers the priests, before Yahweh’s tabernacle in the high place that was at Gibeon,

pour qu’ils offrissent des holocaustes à Yahweh continuellement, matin et soir, sur l’autel des holocaustes, et pour qu’ils accomplissent tout ce qui est écrit dans la loi de Yahweh qu’il a imposée à Israël.

to offer burnt offerings to Yahweh on the altar of burnt offering continually morning and evening, even according to all that is written in Yahweh’s law, which he commanded to Israel;

Auprès d’eux étaient Héman et Idithun, et le reste de ceux qui avaient été choisis et désignés par leurs noms, pour « louer Yahweh, car sa miséricorde dure à jamais ! »

and with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest who were chosen, who were mentioned by name, to give thanks to Yahweh, because his loving kindness endures forever;

Avec eux, savoir, avec Héman et Idithun, étaient des trompettes et des cymbales pour ceux qui devaient les faire retentir, et des instruments pour les cantiques de Dieu. Les fils d’Idithun étaient pour la porte.

and with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should sound aloud, and with instruments for the songs of God; and the sons of Jeduthun to be at the gate.

Tout le peuple s’en alla chacun dans sa maison ; et David s’en retourna pour bénir sa maison.

All the people departed, each man to his house; and David returned to bless his house.

Chapitre 17

Lorsque David fut établi dans sa maison, David dit à Nathan le prophète : « Voici que j’habite dans une maison de cèdre, et l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh est sous la tente ! »

When David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of Yahweh’s covenant is in a tent.”

Nathan répondit à David : « Fais ce que tu as dans le cœur, car Dieu est avec toi. »

Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart; for God is with you.”

Cette nuit-là, la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Nathan en ces termes :

That same night, the word of God came to Nathan, saying,

« Va dire à David, mon serviteur : Ainsi parle Yahweh : Ce n’est pas toi qui me bâtiras une maison pour que j’y habite.

“Go and tell David my servant, ‘Yahweh says, “You shall not build me a house to dwell in;

Car je n’ai point habité dans une maison, depuis le jour où j’ai fait monter Israël d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour ; mais j’ai été de tente en tente et de demeure en demeure.

for I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought up Israel to this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tent to another.

Pendant tout le temps que j’ai voyagé avec tout Israël, ai-je dit un mot à l’un des juges d’Israël à qui j’ai ordonné de paître mon peuple, en disant : Pourquoi ne me bâtissez-vous pas une maison de cèdre ?

In all places in which I have walked with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’”’

Maintenant, tu diras à mon serviteur, à David : Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées : Je t’ai pris au pâturage, derrière les brebis, pour être prince sur mon peuple d’Israël ;

“Now therefore, you shall tell my servant David, ‘Yahweh of Armies says, “I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel.

j’ai été avec toi partout où tu allais, j’ai exterminé tous tes ennemis devant toi, et je t’ai fait un nom comme le nom des grands qui sont sur la terre.

I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make you a name, like the name of the great ones who are in the earth.

J’ai assigné un lieu à mon peuple d’Israël, et je l’ai planté, et il habite chez lui, et il ne sera plus troublé, et les fils d’iniquité ne l’opprimeront plus, comme autrefois

I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more. The children of wickedness will not waste them any more, as at the first,

et comme au jour où j’avais établi des juges sur mon peuple d’Israël. J’ai humilié tous tes ennemis. Et je t’annonce que Yahweh te bâtira une maison.

and from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover I tell you that Yahweh will build you a house.

Quand tes jours seront accomplis et que tu iras avec tes pères, j’élèverai ta postérité après toi, l’un de tes fils, et j’affermirai son règne.

It will happen, when your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your offspring after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom.

C’est lui qui me bâtira une maison, et j’affermirai son trône pour toujours.

He will build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.

Je serai pour lui un père, et il sera pour moi un fils ; et je ne lui retirerai point ma grâce, comme je l’ai retirée à celui qui a régné avant toi.

I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will not take my loving kindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before you;

Je l’établirai pour toujours dans ma maison et dans mon royaume, et son trône sera affermi pour toujours. »

but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom forever. His throne will be established forever.”’”

Nathan parla à David selon toutes ces paroles et toute cette vision. 2. Chap. xvii, 16-27 : Prière de David au sanctuaire. — Humilité de David en présence des faveurs divines (xvii, 16-19). Grandeur de Yahweh et privilège d’Israël (xvii, 20-22). Que Yahweh affermisse et bénisse la maison royale (xvii, 23-27).

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

Et le roi David vint et demeura devant Yahweh ; et il dit : « Qui suis-je, Yahweh Dieu, et quelle est ma maison pour que vous m’ayez fait arriver jusque-là ?

Then David the king went in, and sat before Yahweh; and he said, “Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?

Et c’est encore peu de chose à vos yeux, ô Dieu ! Vous avez parlé de la maison de votre serviteur pour les temps lointains, et vous m’avez regardé comme un homme de haut rang, ô Yahweh Dieu.

This was a small thing in your eyes, God; but you have spoken of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have respected me according to the standard of a man of high degree, Yahweh God.

Que pourrait vous dire de plus David sur l’honneur accordé à votre serviteur ? Vous connaissez votre serviteur.

What can David say yet more to you concerning the honor which is done to your servant? For you know your servant.

Yahweh, c’est à cause de votre serviteur et selon votre cœur, que vous avez fait toute cette grande chose, pour faire connaître toutes ces grandes choses.

Yahweh, for your servant’s sake, and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, to make known all these great things.

Yahweh, nul n’est semblable à vous, et il n’y a point d’autre Dieu que vous, d’après tout ce que nous avons entendu de nos oreilles.

Yahweh, there is no one like you, neither is there any God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

Quelle autre nation y a-t-il sur la terre comme votre peuple d’Israël, que Dieu est venu racheter pour en faire son peuple, pour vous faire un nom par des choses grandes et des prodiges, en chassant des nations de devant votre peuple que vous avez racheté de l’Égypte ?

What one nation in the earth is like your people Israel, whom God went to redeem to himself for a people, to make you a name by great and awesome things, in driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeem out of Egypt?

Vous avez fait de votre peuple d’Israël votre peuple à jamais, et vous, Yahweh, vous êtes devenu son Dieu.

For you made your people Israel your own people forever; and you, Yahweh, became their God.

Maintenant, Yahweh, que la parole que vous avez dite au sujet de votre serviteur et au sujet de sa maison subsiste à jamais, et agissez selon votre parole !

Now, Yahweh, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant, and concerning his house, be established forever, and do as you have spoken.

Qu’elle subsiste, et que votre nom soit glorifié à jamais, et que l’on dise : Yahweh des armées, le Dieu d’Israël, est Dieu pour Israël ! Et que la maison de David, votre serviteur, soit affermie devant vous !

Let your name be established and magnified forever, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel. The house of David your servant is established before you.’

Car vous-même, ô mon Dieu, vous avez révélé à votre serviteur que vous lui bâtiriez une maison ; c’est pourquoi votre serviteur a osé prier devant vous.

For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build him a house. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you.

Maintenant, Yahweh, c’est vous qui êtes Dieu, et vous avez dit à votre serviteur cette parole agréable.

Now, Yahweh, you are God, and have promised this good thing to your servant.

Maintenant, il vous a plu de bénir la maison de votre serviteur, afin qu’elle subsiste à jamais devant vous ; car ce que vous bénissez, Yahweh, est béni pour toujours. »

Now it has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you; for you, Yahweh, have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”

Chapitre 18

Après cela, David battit les Philistins et les abaissa, et il ôta de la main des Philistins Geth et les villes de sa dépendance.

After this, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and took Gath and its towns out of the hand of the Philistines.

Il battit les Moabites, et les Moabites furent pour David des esclaves, lui apportant le tribut.

He defeated Moab; and the Moabites became servants to David, and brought tribute.

David battit Hadarézer, roi de Soba, vers Hamath, lorsqu’il était en chemin pour établir sa domination sur le fleuve de l’Euphrate.

David defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah to Hamath, as he went to establish his dominion by the river Euphrates.

David lui prit mille chars, sept mille cavaliers et vingt mille hommes de pied ; David coupa les jarrets à tous les chevaux d’attelage, et n’en laissa que cent attelages.

David took from him one thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen; and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved of them enough for one hundred chariots.

Les Syriens de Damas étant venus au secours d’Hadarézer, roi de Soba, David battit aux Syriens vingt-deux mille hommes.

When the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck twenty-two thousand men of the Syrians.

David mit des garnisons dans la Syrie de Damas ; les Syriens furent pour David des esclaves, apportant le tribut. Yahweh donnait la victoire à David partout où il allait.

Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought tribute. Yahweh gave victory to David wherever he went.

David prit les boucliers d’or qui étaient sur les serviteurs d’Hadarézer et les apporta à Jérusalem.

David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

David prit encore une grande quantité d’airain à Thébath et à Chun, villes d’Hadarézer ; Salomon en fit la mer d’airain, les colonnes et les ustensiles d’airain.

From Tibhath and from Cun, cities of Hadadezer, David took very much brass, with which Solomon made the bronze sea, the pillars, and the vessels of brass.

Lorsque Thoü, roi de Hamath, apprit que David avait battu toutes les forces d’Hadarézer, roi de Soba,

When Tou king of Hamath heard that David had struck all the army of Hadadezer king of Zobah,

il envoya Adoram, son fils, vers le roi David, pour le saluer et pour le féliciter d’avoir attaqué Hadarézer et de l’avoir battu ; car Thoü était constamment en guerre avec Hadarézer. Il envoya aussi toutes sortes de vases d’or, d’argent et d’airain.

he sent Hadoram his son to king David, to Greet him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and struck him (for Hadadezer had wars with Tou); and he had with him all kinds of vessels of gold and silver and brass.

Le roi David les consacra à Yahweh avec l’argent et l’or qu’il avait pris à toutes les nations, à Edom, à Moab, aux fils d’Ammon, aux Philistins et à Amalec.

King David also dedicated these to Yahweh, with the silver and the gold that he carried away from all the nations; from Edom, from Moab, from the children of Ammon, from the Philistines, and from Amalek.

Abisaï, fils de Sarvia, battit les Edomites, dans la vallée du Sel, au nombre de dix-huit mille.

Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah struck eighteen thousand of the Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

Il mit des garnisons dans Edom, et tout Edom fut assujetti à David. Et Yahweh donnait la victoire à David partout où il allait.

He put garrisons in Edom; and all the Edomites became servants to David. Yahweh gave victory to David wherever he went.

David régna sur tout Israël, et il fit droit et justice à tout son peuple.

David reigned over all Israel; and he executed justice and righteousness for all his people.

Joab, fils de Sarvia, commandait l’armée ; Josaphat, fils d’Ahilud, était archiviste ;

Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;

Sadoc, fils d’Achitob, et Achimélech, fils d’Abiathar, étaient prêtres ; Susa était secrétaire ;

Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Abimelech the son of Abiathar, were priests; Shavsha was scribe;

Banaïas, fils de Joïada, était chef des Céréthiens et des Phéléthiens ; et les fils de David étaient les premiers au côté du roi.

and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief officials serving the king.

Chapitre 19

Après cela, Naas, roi des fils d’Ammon, mourut, et son fils régna à sa place.

After this, Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his place.

David dit : « Je montrerai de la bienveillance à Hanon, fils de Naas, car son père m’a montré de la bienveillance. » Et David envoya des messagers pour le consoler au sujet de son père. Lorsque les serviteurs de David furent arrivés, dans le pays des fils d’Ammon, auprès de Hanon, pour le consoler,

David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

les princes des fils d’Ammon dirent à Hanon : « Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t’envoie des consolateurs ? N’est-ce pas pour reconnaître et détruire, et pour explorer le pays, que ses serviteurs sont venus vers toi ! »

But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Haven’t his servants come to you to search, to overthrow, and to spy out the land?”

Alors Hanon, ayant saisi les serviteurs de David, les rasa et coupa leurs habits à mi-hauteur, jusqu’à la hanche, et il les renvoya.

So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle at their buttocks, and sent them away.

On alla informer David de ce qui était arrivé à ses hommes, et il envoya des gens à leur rencontre, car ces hommes étaient dans une grande confusion, et le roi leur fit dire : « Restez à Jéricho, jusqu’à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, et vous reviendrez ensuite. »

Then some people went and told David how the men were treated. He sent to meet them; for the men were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”

Les fils d’Ammon virent qu’ils s’étaient rendus odieux à David, et Hanon et les fils d’Ammon envoyèrent mille talents d’argent pour prendre à leur solde des chars et des cavaliers chez les Syriens de Mésopotamie et chez les Syriens de Maacha et de Soba.

When the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent one thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, out of Aram-maacah, and out of Zobah.

Ils prirent à leur solde trente-deux mille chars, et le roi de Maacha avec son peuple, lesquels vinrent camper près de Médaba. Les fils d’Ammon se rassemblèrent de leurs villes et vinrent au combat.

So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah with his people, who came and encamped near Medeba. The children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

David l’apprit et fit partir contre eux Joab et toute l’armée, les hommes vaillants.

When David heard of it, he sent Joab with all the army of the mighty men.

Les fils d’Ammon sortirent et se rangèrent en bataille à la porte de la ville ; les rois qui étaient venus étaient à part dans la campagne.

The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the gate of the city; and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.

Lorsque Joab vit qu’il y avait un front de bataille devant et derrière lui, il choisit parmi toute l’élite d’Israël un corps qu’il rangea en face des Syriens,

Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose some of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

et il mit le reste du peuple sous le commandement de son frère Abisaï, les rangeant en face des fils d’Ammon. Il dit :

The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and they put themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

« Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours ; et si les fils d’Ammon sont plus forts que toi, je te secourrai.

He said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you are to help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you.

Sois ferme, et combattons vaillamment pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu, et que Yahweh fasse ce qui semblera bon à ses yeux ! »

Be courageous, and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. May Yahweh do that which seems good to him.”

Joab s’avança donc, ainsi que le peuple qui était avec lui, contre les Syriens pour les attaquer, et ceux-ci s’enfuirent devant lui.

So Joab and the people who were with him came near to the front of the Syrians to the battle; and they fled before him.

Les fils d’Ammon, voyant que les Syriens avaient pris la fuite, s’enfuirent, eux aussi, devant Abisaï, frère de Joab, et rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab rentra dans Jérusalem.

When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

Les Syriens, voyant qu’ils avaient été battus devant Israël, envoyèrent des messagers pour faire venir les Syriens qui étaient de l’autre côté du fleuve ; et Sophach, chef de l’armée d’Hadarézer marchait devant eux.

When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they sent messengers, and called out the Syrians who were beyond the River, with Shophach the captain of the army of Hadadezer leading them.

David en reçut la nouvelle et, ayant assemblé tout Israël, il passa le Jourdain, vint vers eux, et disposa l’attaque contre eux ; et David rangea son armée en bataille contre les Syriens. Ceux-ci engagèrent le combat contre lui,

David was told that; so he gathered all Israel together, passed over the Jordan, came to them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

mais les Syriens s’enfuirent devant Israël, et David tua aux Syriens les chevaux de sept mille chars et quarante mille hommes de pied ; il mit aussi à mort Sophach, chef de l’armée.

The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed of the Syrian men seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and also killed Shophach the captain of the army.

Les vassaux d’Hadarézer, se voyant battus devant Israël, firent la paix avec David et lui furent assujettis. Et les Syriens ne voulurent plus porter secours aux fils d’Ammon.

When the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David, and served him. The Syrians would not help the children of Ammon any more.

Chapitre 20

Au temps du retour de l’année, au temps où les rois se mettent en campagne, Joab se mit à la tête d’une forte armée, ravagea le pays des fils d’Ammon et vint assiéger Rabba. Mais David resta à Jérusalem. Joab battit Rabba et la détruisit.

At the time of the return of the year, at the time when kings go out, Joab led out the army, and wasted the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. Joab struck Rabbah, and overthrew it.

David enleva la couronne de leur roi de dessus sa tête, et il y trouva le poids d’un talent d’or ; et il y avait sur elle une pierre précieuse, et elle fut mise sur la tête de David. Et il emporta de la ville un très grand butin.

David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it. It was set on David’s head, and he brought very much plunder out of the city.

Quant au peuple qui s’y trouvait, il l’en fit sortir, et il les déchira avec des scies, avec des pics de fer et des haches ; et David traita de même toutes les villes des fils d’Ammon. Et David retourna à Jérusalem avec tout le peuple.

He brought out the people who were in it, and had them cut with saws, with iron picks, and with axes. David did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Après cela eut lieu une bataille à Gazer avec les Philistins. Alors Sabochaï, le Husathite, tua Saphaï, l’un des descendants de Rapha, et les Philistins furent humiliés.

After this, war arose at Gezer with the Philistines. Then Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, of the sons of the giant; and they were subdued.

Il y eut encore une bataille avec les Philistins ; et Elchanan, fils de Jaïr, tua Lachmi, frère de Goliath, de Geth ; le bois de sa lance était semblable à une ensouple de tisserand.

Again there was war with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

Il y eut encore une bataille à Geth. Il s’y trouva un homme de haute taille, qui avait six doigts à chaque main et à chaque pied, vingt-quatre en tout, et lui aussi descendait de Rapha.

There was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had twenty-four fingers and toes, six on each hand, and six on each foot; and he also was born to the giant.

Il insulta Israël, et Jonathan, fils de Samaa, frère de David, le tua.

When he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David’s brother killed him.

Ces hommes étaient des fils de Rapha, à Geth ; ils périrent par la main de David et par la main de ses serviteurs.

These were born to the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

Chapitre 21

Satan se tint contre Israël, et il excita David à faire le dénombrement d’Israël.

Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.

Et David dit à Joab et aux chefs du peuple : « Allez, comptez Israël depuis Bersabée jusqu’à Dan, et faites-moi un rapport, afin que je sache leur nombre. »

David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.”

Joab répondit : « Que Yahweh ajoute à son peuple cent fois ce qu’il y en a ! Ô roi, monseigneur, ne sont-ils pas tous esclaves de mon seigneur ? Pourquoi donc mon seigneur demande-t-il cela ? Pourquoi faire venir le péché sur Israël ? »

Joab said, “May Yahweh make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”

Mais la parole du roi prévalut contre Joab. Joab partit et parcourut tout Israël, et il revint à Jérusalem.

Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, then came to Jerusalem.

Et Joab remit à David le rôle du dénombrement du peuple : il y avait dans tout Israël onze cent mille hommes tirant l’épée, et en Juda quatre cent soixante-dix mille hommes tirant l’épée.

Joab gave up the sum of the census of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew a sword; and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew a sword.

Il ne fit pas le dénombrement de Lévi et de Benjamin au milieu d’eux, car l’ordre du roi répugnait à Joab.

But he didn’t count Levi and Benjamin among them; for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.

Dieu vit de mauvais œil cette affaire, et il frappa Israël.

God was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.

Et David dit à Dieu : « J’ai commis un grand péché en faisant cela. Maintenant, ôtez, je vous prie, l’iniquité de votre serviteur, car j’ai tout à fait agi en insensé. »

David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.”

Yahweh parla à Gad, le voyant de David, en ces termes :

Yahweh spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,

« Va et parle à David en ces termes : Ainsi parle Yahweh : Je pose devant toi trois choses ; choisis-en une, et je te la ferai. »

“Go and speak to David, saying, ‘Yahweh says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”

Gad vint vers David et lui dit : « Ainsi parle Yahweh : Choisis,

So Gad came to David, and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Take your choice:

ou trois années de famine, ou trois mois durant lesquels tu seras emporté devant tes adversaires et atteint par le glaive de tes ennemis, ou trois jours durant lesquels le glaive de Yahweh et la peste seront dans le pays, et l’ange de Yahweh opérera la destruction dans tout le territoire d’Israël. Maintenant, vois ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m’envoie. »

either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days the sword of Yahweh, even pestilence in the land, and Yahweh’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”

David dit à Gad : « Je suis dans une cruelle angoisse. Ah ! que je tombe entre les mains de Yahweh, car ses miséricordes sont très grandes, et que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes ! »

David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into Yahweh’s hand; for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”

Et Yahweh envoya une peste en Israël, et il tomba soixante-dix mille hommes en Israël.

So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.

Et Dieu envoya un ange à Jérusalem pour la détruire ; et pendant qu’il détruisait, Yahweh vit et se repentit de ce mal, et il dit à l’ange qui détruisait : « Assez ! retire maintenant ta main. » L’ange de Yahweh se tenait près de l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébuséen.

God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, Yahweh saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” Yahweh’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

David, ayant levé les yeux, vit l’ange de Yahweh se tenant entre la terre et le ciel, et ayant à la main son épée nue, tournée contre Jérusalem. Alors David et les anciens, couverts de sacs, tombèrent sur leur visage.

David lifted up his eyes, and saw Yahweh’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.

Et David dit à Dieu : « N’est-ce pas moi qui ai dit de faire le dénombrement du peuple ? C’est moi qui ai péché et qui ai fait le mal ; mais celles-là, ces brebis, qu’ont-elles fait ? Yahweh, mon Dieu, que votre main soit donc sur moi et sur la maison de mon père, mais non sur votre peuple pour sa ruine. »

David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Yahweh my God, be against me, and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”

L’ange de Yahweh ordonna à Gad de dire à David de monter pour élever un autel à Yahweh sur l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébuséen.

Then Yahweh’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

David monta, selon la parole de Gad qu’il avait dite au nom de Yahweh.

David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in Yahweh’s name.

Ornan, s’étant retourné, vit l’ange, et il se cacha, lui et ses quatre fils : Ornan battait alors du froment.

Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

Lorsque David arriva auprès d’Ornan, Ornan regarda et il aperçut David ; sortant aussitôt de l’aire, il se prosterna devant David, le visage contre terre.

As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

David dit à Ornan : « Cède-moi l’emplacement de l’aire, et j’y bâtirai un autel à Yahweh ; cède-le-moi pour sa pleine valeur en argent, pour que la plaie se retire de dessus le peuple. »

Then David said to Ornan, “Give me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to Yahweh on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”

Ornan dit à David : « Prends-le, et que mon seigneur le roi fasse ce qu’il trouvera bon. Vois, je donne les bœufs pour l’holocauste, les traîneaux pour le bois, et le froment pour l’oblation ; je donne tout cela. »

Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”

Mais le roi David dit à Ornan : « Non ! Mais je veux l’acheter contre sa pleine valeur en argent, car je ne prendrai pas ce qui est à toi pour Yahweh, et je n’offrirai pas un holocauste qui ne me coûte rien. »

King David said to Ornan, “No; but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for Yahweh, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”

David donna à Ornan un poids de six cents sicles d’or pour l’emplacement.

So David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.

Et David bâtit là un autel à Yahweh, et offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques. Il cria vers Yahweh, et Yahweh lui répondit par le feu qui descendit du ciel sur l’autel de l’holocauste.

David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on Yahweh; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.

Et Yahweh parla à l’ange, et celui-ci remit son épée dans le fourreau.

Then Yahweh commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.

En ce temps-là, David, voyant que Yahweh l’avait exaucé dans l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébuséen, y offrait des sacrifices.

At that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

Le tabernacle de Yahweh, que Moïse avait construit au désert, et l’autel des holocaustes étaient en ce temps-là sur le haut lieu de Gabaon.

For Yahweh’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.

Mais David ne pouvait pas aller devant cet autel pour honorer Dieu, parce qu’il avait été terrifié par l’épée de l’ange de Yahweh.

But David couldn’t go before it to inquire of God; for he was afraid because of the sword of Yahweh’s angel.

Chapitre 22

Et David dit : « C’est ici la maison de Yahweh Dieu, et c’est l’autel pour les holocaustes d’Israël. » 2. Chap. xxii, 2-5. Préparatifs de David pour la construction du Temple.

Then David said, “This is the house of Yahweh God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”

David ordonna de rassembler les étrangers qui étaient dans le pays d’Israël, et il établit des tailleurs de pierre pour couper des pierres de taille pour la construction de la maison de Dieu.

David gave orders to gather together the foreigners who were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to cut dressed stones to build God’s house.

David prépara aussi du fer en quantité, pour les clous des battants des portes et pour les crampons, ainsi que de l’airain en quantité incalculable,

David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the couplings; and brass in abundance without weight;

et des bois de cèdre sans nombre ; car les Sidoniens et les Tyriens avaient amené à David des bois de cèdre en abondance.

and cedar trees without number, for the Sidonians and the people of Tyre brought cedar trees in abundance to David.

David disait : « Mon fils Salomon est jeune et faible, et la maison qui sera bâtie à Yahweh doit être magnifique à l’excès, afin d’être renommée et glorieuse dans tous les pays ; je veux donc faire pour lui des préparatifs. » Et David fit beaucoup de préparatifs avant sa mort. 3. Chap. xxii, 6-16. David charge Salomon de la construction du Temple. — Il rappelle à Salomon que Dieu ne lui a pas permis de bâtir le Temple, à cause du sang qu’il a versé (xxii, 6-8), mais a chargé son fils de cette œuvre (xxii, 9, 10). Il l’exhorte à la fidélité à Yahweh (xxii, 11-13) et lui rappelant les préparatifs déjà faits, le conjure de se mettre à la besogne (xxii, 14-16).

David said, “Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be built for Yahweh must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and of glory throughout all countries. I will therefore make preparation for it.” So David prepared abundantly before his death.

David appela Salomon, son fils, et lui ordonna de bâtir une maison à Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël.

Then he called for Solomon his son, and commanded him to build a house for Yahweh, the God of Israel.

David dit à Salomon : « Mon fils, j’avais l’intention de bâtir une maison au nom de Yahweh, mon Dieu.

David said to Solomon his son, “As for me, it was in my heart to build a house to the name of Yahweh my God.

Mais la parole de Yahweh me fut adressée en ces termes : Tu as versé du sang en quantité et tu as fait de grandes guerres ; tu ne bâtiras pas une maison à mon nom, car tu as versé devant moi beaucoup de sang sur la terre.

But Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, ‘You have shed blood abundantly, and have made great wars. You shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight.

Voici, il te naîtra un fils qui sera un homme tranquille, je lui donnerai du repos devant tous ses ennemis d’alentour ; car Salomon sera son nom, et je donnerai en Israël la paix et la tranquillité pendant sa vie.

Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of peace. I will give him rest from all his enemies all around; for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days.

Ce sera lui qui bâtira une maison à mon nom ; il sera pour moi un fils, et je serai pour lui un père, et j’affermirai pour toujours le trône de sa royauté sur Israël.

He shall build a house for my name; and he will be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.’

Maintenant, mon fils, que Yahweh soit avec toi, afin que tu prospères et que tu bâtisses la maison de Yahweh, ton Dieu, selon ce qu’il a dit de toi.

Now, my son, may Yahweh be with you and prosper you, and build the house of Yahweh your God, as he has spoken concerning you.

Daigne seulement Yahweh t’accorder la prudence et l’intelligence, quand il te donnera autorité sur Israël, afin que tu observes la loi de Yahweh, ton Dieu !

May Yahweh give you discretion and understanding, and put you in charge of Israel; that so you may keep the law of Yahweh your God.

Alors tu prospéreras, si tu prends soin de mettre en pratique les lois et les ordonnances que Yahweh a prescrites à Moïse pour Israël. Sois fort, et prends courage ; ne crains point et ne t’effraie point.

Then you will prosper, if you observe to do the statutes and the ordinances which Yahweh gave Moses concerning Israel. Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed.

Voici que par mes efforts, j’ai préparé pour la maison de Yahweh cent mille talents d’or, un million de talents d’argent ; quant à l’airain et au fer, on ne saurait les peser, car il y en a en quantité ; j’ai aussi préparé du bois et des pierres, et tu en ajouteras encore.

Now, behold, in my affliction I have prepared for Yahweh’s house one hundred thousand talents of gold, one million talents of silver, and brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance. I have also prepared timber and stone; and you may add to them.

Tu as avec toi en multitude des ouvriers, des tailleurs de pierres, des artisans de la pierre et du bois et des hommes habiles dans toute espèce d’ouvrages.

There are also workmen with you in abundance, cutters and workers of stone and timber, and all kinds of men who are skillful in every kind of work;

L’or, l’argent, l’airain et le fer sont sans nombre. Lève-toi ! À l’œuvre ! et que Yahweh soit avec toi ! » 4. Chap. xxii, 17-19 : Appel aux chefs d’Israël.

of the gold, the silver, the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise and be doing, and may Yahweh be with you.”

David ordonna à tous les chefs d’Israël de venir en aide à Salomon, son fils, en disant :

David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying,

« Yahweh, votre Dieu, n’est-il pas avec vous, et ne vous a-t-il pas donné du repos de tous côtés ? Car il a livré entre mes mains les habitants du pays, et le pays est assujetti devant Yahweh et devant son peuple.

“Isn’t Yahweh your God with you? Hasn’t he given you rest on every side? For he has delivered the inhabitants of the land into my hand; and the land is subdued before Yahweh, and before his people.

Maintenant, appliquez votre cœur et votre âme à chercher Yahweh, votre Dieu ; levez-vous et bâtissez le sanctuaire de Yahweh Dieu, afin d’amener l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh et les saints ustensiles de Dieu dans la maison qui sera bâtie au nom de Yahweh. »

Now set your heart and your soul to follow Yahweh your God. Arise therefore, and build the sanctuary of Yahweh God, to bring the ark of Yahweh’s covenant and the holy vessels of God into the house that is to be built for Yahweh’s name.”

Chapitre 23

David, vieux et rassasié de jours, établit Salomon, son fils, roi sur Israël.

Now David was old and full of days; and he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

Il réunit tous les chefs d’Israël, les prêtres et les lévites.

He gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.

On compta les lévites, depuis l’âge de trente ans et au-dessus ; leur nombre, par tête et par hommes, fut de trente huit mille.

The Levites were counted from thirty years old and upward; and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty-eight thousand.

Et David dit : « De ceux-là, que vingt-quatre mille soient préposés aux offices de la maison de Yahweh, que six mille soient scribes et magistrats,

David said, “Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of Yahweh’s house, six thousand were officers and judges,

quatre mille portiers, et que quatre mille louent Yahweh avec les instruments que j’ai faits pour le louer. »

four thousand were doorkeepers, and four thousand praised Yahweh with the instruments which I made for giving praise.”

David les distribua en classes, d’après les fils de Lévi : Gerson, Caath et Mérari.

David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Des Gersonites : Léédan et Séméï. —

Of the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.

Fils de Léédan : le chef Jahiel, Zétham et Joël : trois.

The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the chief, Zetham, and Joel, three.

Fils de Séméï : Salomith, Hoziel et Aran : trois. Ce sont là les chefs de famille issus de Léédan. —

The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers’ households of Ladan.

Fils de Séméï : Léheth, Ziza, Jaüs et Baria. Ce sont là les quatre fils de Séméï ;

The sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.

Léheth était le chef, et Ziza le second ; Jaüs et Baria n’eurent pas beaucoup de fils et ils furent comptés, selon leur famille, en une classe.

Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah didn’t have many sons; therefore they became a fathers’ house in one reckoning.

Fils de Caath : Amram, Isaar, Hébron et Oziel : quatre. —

The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.

Fils d’Amram : Aaron et Moïse. Aaron fut mis à part pour qu’on le sanctifie comme très saint, lui et ses fils à jamais, afin de faire fumer les parfums devant Yahweh, de faire son service et de bénir en son nom à jamais.

The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses; and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons, forever, to burn incense before Yahweh, to minister to him, and to bless in his name, forever.

Quant à Moïse, homme de Dieu, ses fils furent comptés dans la tribu de Lévi.

But as for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.

Fils de Moïse : Gersom et Eliézer. —

The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.

Fils de Gersom : Subuël, le chef. —

The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the chief.

Les fils d’Eliézer furent : Rohobia, le chef ; Eliézer n’eut pas d’autre fils, mais les fils de Rohobia furent très nombreux. —

The sons of Eliezer were: Rehabiah the chief; and Eliezer had no other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.

Fils d’Isaar : Salomith, le chef. —

The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the chief.

Fils d’Hébron : Jériaü, le chef ; Amarias, le second ; Jahaziel, le troisième et Jecmaam, le quatrième, —

The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

Fils d’Oziel : Micha, le chef ; Jésia, le second.

Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters only: and their brothers the sons of Kish took them as wives.

The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

Ce sont là les fils de Lévi selon leurs familles, les chefs de famille selon qu’ils furent dénombrés, nommément comptés par tête ; ils faisaient l’œuvre du service de la maison de Yahweh, depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus.

These were the sons of Levi after their fathers’ houses, even the heads of the fathers’ houses of those who were counted individually, in the number of names by their polls, who did the work for the service of Yahweh’s house, from twenty years old and upward.

Car David dit : « Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, a donné le repos à son peuple, et il habitera pour toujours à Jérusalem ;

For David said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people; and he dwells in Jerusalem forever.

et quant aux lévites, ils n’auront plus à porter la Demeure et tous les ustensiles pour son service. »

Also the Levites will no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its vessels for its service.”

Ce fut d’après les derniers ordres de David que se fit le dénombrement des fils de Lévi depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus.

For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were counted, from twenty years old and upward.

Car leur fonction était de se mettre à la disposition des fils d’Aaron pour le service de la maison de Yahweh, concernant les parvis et les chambres, la purification de toutes les choses saintes, et l’œuvre du service de la maison de Dieu ;

For their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of Yahweh’s house, in the courts, and in the rooms, and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of God’s house;

concernant les pains de proposition, la fleur de farine pour les oblations, les galettes sans levain, ce qui est cuit sur la poêle et ce qui est mélangé, tout ce qu’il y avait à peser et à mesurer.

for the show bread also, and for the fine flour for a meal offering, whether of unleavened wafers, or of that which is baked in the pan, or of that which is soaked, and for all measurements of quantity and size;

Ils avaient à se présenter chaque matin et chaque soir, afin de célébrer et louer Yahweh,

and to stand every morning to thank and praise Yahweh, and likewise in the evening;

et d’offrir tous les holocaustes à Yahweh dans les sabbats, les nouvelles lunes et les fêtes, selon le nombre que la loi prescrit d’offrir à perpétuité devant Yahweh.

and to offer all burnt offerings to Yahweh, on the Sabbaths, on the new moons, and on the set feasts, in number according to the ordinance concerning them, continually before Yahweh;

Ils devaient s’appliquer au soin de la tente de réunion, au soin des choses saintes et au soin des fils d’Aaron, leurs frères, pour le service de la maison de Yahweh.

and that they should keep the duty of the Tent of Meeting, the duty of the holy place, and the duty of the sons of Aaron their brothers, for the service of Yahweh’s house.

Chapitre 24

Quant aux fils d’Aaron, voici leurs classes : Fils d’Aaron : Nadab, Abiu, Eléazar et Ithamar.

These were the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

Nadab et Abiu moururent avant leur père, sans avoir de fils, et Eléazar et Ithamar remplirent les fonctions du sacerdoce.

But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest’s office.

David, Sadoc, de la descendance d’Eléazar, et Achimélech, de la descendance d’Ithamar, répartirent les fils d’Aaron par classes selon leur service.

David with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to their ordering in their service.

On trouva parmi les fils d’Eléazar plus de chefs que parmi les fils d’Ithamar, et on les répartit ainsi : pour les fils d’Eléazar, seize chefs de famille, et, pour les fils d’Ithamar, huit chefs de famille.

There were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and they were divided like this: of the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen, heads of fathers’ houses; and of the sons of Ithamar, according to their fathers’ houses, eight.

On les répartit par le sort, les uns comme les autres, car il se trouvait des princes du sanctuaire et des princes de Dieu aussi bien parmi les fils d’Eléazar que parmi les fils d’Ithamar.

Thus were they divided impartially by drawing lots; for there were princes of the sanctuary, and princes of God, both of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.

Shemaiah the son of Nethanel the scribe, who was of the Levites, wrote them in the presence of the king, the princes, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the priests and of the Levites; one fathers’ house being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.

This was their ordering in their service, to come into Yahweh’s house according to the ordinance given to them by Aaron their father, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, had commanded him.

Ce sont là les fils de Lévi, selon leurs familles. Eux aussi, comme leurs frères, les fils d’Aaron, ils tirèrent le sort devant le roi David, devant Sadoc et Achimélech, et devant les chefs de famille sacerdotales et lévitiques, les plus anciens étant sur le même pied que les plus jeunes.

These likewise cast lots even as their brothers the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the priests and of the Levites; the fathers’ households of the chief even as those of his younger brother.

Chapitre 25

David et les princes de l’armée mirent à part, pour le service, des fils d’Asaph, de Héman et d’Idithun qui prophétisaient avec la harpe, la cithare et les cymbales. Voici leur nombre, — de ceux qui étaient occupés au service — :

Moreover, David and the captains of the army set apart for the service certain of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with harps, with stringed instruments, and with cymbals. The number of those who did the work according to their service was:

Des fils d’Asaph : Zacchur, Joseph, Nathania et Asaréla, fils d’Asaph, sous la direction d’Asaph, qui prophétisait selon les ordres du roi. —

of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah. The sons of Asaph were under the hand of Asaph, who prophesied at the order of the king.

D’Idithun, les fils d’Idithun : Godolias, Sori, Jéséïas, Hasabias, Mathathias et Séméi, six, selon les ordres de leur père Idithun, qui prophétisait avec la cithare pour célébrer et louer Yahweh. —

Of Jeduthun; the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six, under the hands of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied in giving thanks and praising Yahweh with the harp.

De Héman, les fils de Héman : Bocciaü, Mathaniaü, Oziel, Subuël, Jérimoth, Hananias, Hanani, Eliatha, Geddelthi, Romemthiézer, Jesbacassa, Mellothi, Othir et Mahazioth ;

Of Heman; the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.

ils étaient tous fils de Héman, voyant du roi dans les paroles de Dieu, pour exalter sa puissance : Dieu avait donné à Héman quatorze fils et trois filles.

All these were the sons of Heman the king’s seer in the words of God, to lift up the horn. God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

Tous ces lévites étaient sous les ordres de leurs pères pour le chant de la maison de Yahweh, ayant des cymbales, des cithares et des harpes pour le service de la maison de Dieu, sous les ordres de David, d’Asaph, d’Idithun et de Héman.

All these were under the hands of their father for song in Yahweh’s house, with cymbals, stringed instruments, and harps, for the service of God’s house; Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman being under the order of the king.

The number of them, with their brothers who were instructed in singing to Yahweh, even all who were skillful, was two hundred eighty-eight.

Fils de Mésélémia : Zacharias, le premier-né ; Jadihel le deuxième, Zabadias le troisième, Jathanaël le quatrième,

Meshelemiah had sons: Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,

All these were of the sons of Obed-Edom: they and their sons and their brothers, able men in strength for the service; sixty-two of Obed-Edom.

Meshelemiah had sons and brothers, valiant men, eighteen.

Hosa, des fils de Mérari, avait pour fils : Semri, le chef : il n’était pas le premier-né, mais son père l’avait établi chef ;

Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons: Shimri the chief (for though he was not the firstborn, yet his father made him chief),

Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, and Zechariah the fourth: all the sons and brothers of Hosah were thirteen.

Of these were the divisions of the doorkeepers, even of the chief men, having offices like their brothers, to minister in Yahweh’s house.

They cast lots, the small as well as the great, according to their fathers’ houses, for every gate.

Le sort pour le côté de l’orient échut à Sélémias. On tira au sort pour Zacharias, son fils, qui était un sage conseiller, et le côté du septentrion lui échut.

The lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counselor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.

Le côté du midi échut à Obédédom, et la maison des magasins à ses fils.

To Obed-Edom southward; and to his sons the storehouse.

Eastward were six Levites, northward four a day, southward four a day, and for the storehouse two and two.

The sons of Jehieli: Zetham, and Joel his brother, over the treasures of Yahweh’s house.

c’était Subuël, fils de Gersom, fils de Moïse, qui était l’intendant en chef des trésors.

and Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was ruler over the treasures.

This Shelomoth and his brothers were over all the treasures of the dedicated things, which David the king, and the heads of the fathers’ households, the captains over thousands and hundreds, and the captains of the army, had dedicated.

They dedicated some of the plunder won in battles to repair Yahweh’s house.

Of the Hebronites was Jerijah the chief, even of the Hebronites, according to their generations by fathers’ households. They were sought for in the fortieth year of the reign of David, and mighty men of valor were found among them at Jazer of Gilead.

et ses frères, hommes vaillants, étaient au nombre de deux mille sept cents chefs de famille. Le roi David les établit sur les Rubénites, sur les Gadites et sur la demi-tribu de Manassé pour toutes les affaires de Dieu et les affaires du roi.

His brothers, men of valor, were two thousand seven hundred, heads of fathers’ households, whom king David made overseers over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites, for every matter pertaining to God, and for the affairs of the king.

Chapitre 27

Les enfants d’Israël selon leur nombre, chefs de familles, chefs de milliers et de centaines, officiers au service du roi pour tout ce qui concernait les divisions, celles qui arrivaient et celles qui partaient, mois par mois, pendant tous les mois de l’année, — chaque division étant de vingt-quatre mille hommes, — étaient :

Now the children of Israel after their number, the heads of fathers’ households and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers who served the king, in any matter of the divisions which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year—of every division were twenty-four thousand.

Over the division of the second month was Dodai the Ahohite, and his division; and Mikloth the ruler: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The third captain of the army for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, chief: and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

This is that Benaiah who was the mighty man of the thirty, and over the thirty: and of his division was Ammizabad his son.

But David didn’t take the number of them from twenty years old and under, because Yahweh had said he would increase Israel like the stars of the sky.

Joab the son of Zeruiah began to take a census, but didn’t finish; and wrath came on Israel for this. The number wasn’t put into the account in the chronicles of king David.

All these were the rulers of the property which was king David’s.

Also Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king’s sons.

Ahithophel was the king’s counselor: and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.

Chapitre 28

David rassembla à Jérusalem tous les princes d’Israël : les princes des tribus, les chefs des divisions qui servaient le roi, les chefs de milliers et les chefs de centaines, les intendants de tous les biens et troupeaux du roi et de ses fils, ainsi que les intendants et les vaillants, — tous les vaillants soldats.

David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, the captains of the companies who served the king by division, the captains of thousands, the captains of hundreds, and the rulers over all the substance and possessions of the king and of his sons, with the officers and the mighty men, even all the mighty men of valor, to Jerusalem.

Le roi David se leva sur ses pieds et dit : « Écoutez-moi, mes frères et mon peuple. J’avais l’intention de bâtir une maison de repos pour l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh et pour le marche-pied de notre Dieu, et je faisais des préparatifs pour la construction.

Then David the king stood up on his feet, and said, “Hear me, my brothers, and my people! As for me, it was in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of Yahweh’s covenant, and for the footstool of our God; and I had prepared for the building.

Mais Dieu m’a dit : Tu ne bâtiras pas une maison à mon nom, parce que tu es un homme de guerre et que tu as versé le sang.

But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war, and have shed blood.’

Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, m’a choisi dans toute la maison de mon père, pour que je fusse roi sur Israël à jamais. Car il a choisi Juda pour être chef ; et dans la maison de Juda, il a choisi la maison de mon père, et, parmi les fils de mon père, il s’est complu en moi pour me faire régner sur tout Israël.

However Yahweh, the God of Israel, chose me out of all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever. For he has chosen Judah to be prince; and in the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel.

Et entre tous mes fils, — car Yahweh m’a donné beaucoup de fils, — il a choisi mon fils Salomon pour le faire asseoir sur le trône de la royauté de Yahweh, sur Israël.

Of all my sons (for Yahweh has given me many sons), he has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of Yahweh’s kingdom over Israel.

Il m’a dit : C’est Salomon, ton fils, qui bâtira ma maison et mes parvis, car je l’ai choisi pour mon fils, et je serai pour lui un père.

He said to me, ‘Solomon, your son, shall build my house and my courts; for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.

J’affermirai pour toujours sa royauté, s’il reste attaché, comme il l’est aujourd’hui, à la pratique de mes commandements et de mes ordonnances.

I will establish his kingdom forever if he continues to do my commandments and my ordinances, as it is today.’

Maintenant, aux yeux de tout Israël, de l’assemblée de Yahweh, et devant notre Dieu qui nous entend, gardez et observez avec soin tous les commandements de Yahweh, votre Dieu, afin que vous possédiez ce bon pays et que vous le transmettiez en héritage à vos fils après vous, à jamais.

Now therefore, in the sight of all Israel, Yahweh’s assembly, and in the audience of our God, observe and seek out all the commandments of Yahweh your God; that you may possess this good land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children after you forever.

Et toi, Salomon, mon fils, connais le Dieu de ton père, et sers-le d’un cœur parfait et d’une âme dévouée, car Yahweh sonde tous les cœurs et pénètre tout dessein des pensées. Si tu le cherches, il se laissera trouver par toi ; mais si tu l’abandonnes, il te rejettera pour toujours.

You, Solomon my son, know the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind; for Yahweh searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

Vois maintenant que Yahweh t’a choisi pour bâtir une maison qui sera son sanctuaire. Sois fort, et à l’œuvre. »

Take heed now; for Yahweh has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary. Be strong, and do it.”

David donna à Salomon son fils le modèle du portique et des bâtiments, chambres du trésor, chambres hautes, chambres intérieures qui s’y rattachaient, ainsi que de la chambre du propitiatoire ;

Then David gave to Solomon his son the plans for the porch of the temple, for its houses, for its treasuries, for its upper rooms, for its inner rooms, for the place of the mercy seat;

le plan de tout ce qu’il avait dans l’esprit touchant les parvis de la maison de Yahweh et toutes les chambres à l’entour, pour les trésors de la maison de Dieu et les trésors du sanctuaire,

and the plans of all that he had by the Spirit, for the courts of Yahweh’s house, for all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of God’s house, and for the treasuries of the dedicated things;

pour les classes des prêtres et des lévites, pour toute l’œuvre du service de la maison de Yahweh, et pour tous les ustensiles employés au service de la maison de Yahweh ;

also for the divisions of the priests and the Levites, for all the work of the service of Yahweh’s house, and for all the vessels of service in Yahweh’s house;

le modèle des ustensiles d’or, avec le poids de l’or, pour tous les ustensiles de chaque service ; le modèle de tous les ustensiles d’argent, avec le poids, pour tous les ustensiles de chaque service ;

of gold by weight for the gold, for all vessels of every kind of service; for all the vessels of silver by weight, for all vessels of every kind of service;

le poids des chandeliers d’or et de leurs lampes d’or, selon le poids de chaque chandelier et de ses lampes, et le poids des chandeliers d’argent, selon le poids de chaque chandelier ;

by weight also for the lamp stands of gold, and for its lamps, of gold, by weight for every lamp stand and for its lamps; and for the lamp stands of silver, by weight for every lamp stand and for its lamps, according to the use of every lamp stand;

le poids de l’or pour les tables des pains de proposition, pour chaque table, et le poids de l’argent pour les tables d’argent ;

and the gold by weight for the tables of show bread, for every table; and silver for the tables of silver;

le modèle des fourchettes, des aiguières et des coupes d’or pur ; des amphores d’or, avec le poids de chaque amphore ; des amphores d’argent, avec le poids de chaque amphore ;

and the forks, the basins, and the cups, of pure gold; and for the golden bowls by weight for every bowl; and for the silver bowls by weight for every bowl;

de l’autel des parfums en or épuré, selon son poids ; le modèle du char de Dieu, des Chérubins d’or qui étendent leurs ailes et couvrent l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh.

and for the altar of incense refined gold by weight; and gold for the plans for the chariot, and the cherubim that spread out and cover the ark of Yahweh’s covenant.

« Tout cela, dit David, tous les ouvrages de ce modèle, Yahweh m’en a instruit par un écrit qui, de sa main, est venu à moi. »

“All this”, said David, “I have been made to understand in writing from Yahweh’s hand, even all the works of this pattern.”

David dit à Salomon, son fils : « Sois fort et courageux ! À l’œuvre ! Ne crains point et ne t’effraie point ; car Yahweh Dieu, mon Dieu, sera avec toi ; il ne te délaissera pas et ne t’abandonnera pas, jusqu’à l’achèvement de tout l’ouvrage pour le service de la maison de Yahweh.

David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do it. Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed; for Yahweh God, even my God, is with you. He will not fail you, nor forsake you, until all the work for the service of Yahweh’s house is finished.

Et voici avec toi les classes des prêtres et des lévites pour tout le service de la maison de Dieu ; avec toi, pour toute espèce de travaux, sont aussi tous les hommes dévoués et habiles, pour tous les ouvrages ; enfin, les chefs et le peuple pour l’exécution de tous tes ordres. »

Behold, there are the divisions of the priests and the Levites, for all the service of God’s house. Every willing man who has skill, for any kind of service, shall be with you in all kinds of work. Also the captains and all the people will be entirely at your command.”

Chapitre 29

Le roi David dit à toute l’assemblée : « Mon fils Salomon, le seul que Dieu ait choisi, est jeune et faible, et l’ouvrage est considérable ; car ce palais n’est pas pour un homme, mais pour Yahweh Dieu.

David the king said to all the assembly, “Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great; for the palace is not for man, but for Yahweh God.

J’ai mis tous mes efforts à préparer pour la maison de mon Dieu de l’or pour les objets d’or, de l’argent pour les objets d’argent, de l’airain pour les objets d’airain, du fer pour les objets de fer, du bois pour les objets de bois, des pierres d’onyx et des pierres à enchâsser, des pierres d’ornement et de diverses couleurs, toutes sortes de pierres précieuses et des pierres de marbre en abondance.

Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for the things of gold, the silver for the things of silver, the brass for the things of brass, iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood; also onyx stones, stones to be set, stones for inlaid work, of various colors, all kinds of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance.

De plus, dans mon affection pour la maison de Dieu, l’or et l’argent que je possède en propre, je le donne à la maison de mon Dieu, outre tout ce que j’ai préparé pour la maison du sanctuaire :

In addition, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, since I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, I give it to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house,

trois mille talents d’or, d’or d’Ophir, et sept mille talents d’argent épuré, pour en revêtir les parois des chambres,

even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, with which to overlay the walls of the houses;

l’or pour les objets d’or, l’argent pour les objets d’argent, et pour tous les travaux de la main des ouvriers. Qui veut aujourd’hui remplir spontanément sa main d’offrandes pour Yahweh ? »

of gold for the things of gold, and of silver for the things of silver, and for all kinds of work to be made by the hands of artisans. Who then offers willingly to consecrate himself today to Yahweh?”

Les chefs des familles, les princes des tribus d’Israël, les chefs de milliers et de centaines, ainsi que les intendants du roi, firent volontairement des offrandes.

Then the princes of the fathers’ households, and the princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers over the king’s work, offered willingly;

Ils donnèrent pour le travail de la maison de Dieu cinq mille talents d’or, dix mille dariques, dix mille talents d’argent, dix-huit mille talents d’airain et cent mille talents de fer.

and they gave for the service of God’s house of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand darics, of silver ten thousand talents, of brass eighteen thousand talents, and of iron one hundred thousand talents.

Ceux qui possédaient des pierres précieuses les donnèrent, pour le trésor de la maison de Yahweh, entre les mains de Jahiel, le Gersonite.

People with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of Yahweh’s house, under the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite.

Le peuple se réjouit de leurs offrandes volontaires, car c’était d’un cœur parfait qu’ils faisaient ces offrandes volontaires à Yahweh ; le roi David en eut aussi une grande joie.

Then the people rejoiced, because they offered willingly, because with a perfect heart they offered willingly to Yahweh; and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.

David bénit Yahweh aux yeux de toute l’assemblée ; et David dit : « Béni soyez-vous, d’éternité en éternité, Yahweh, Dieu de notre père d’Israël !

Therefore David blessed Yahweh before all the assembly; and David said, “You are blessed, Yahweh, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever.

À vous, Yahweh, la grandeur, la puissance, la magnificence, la splendeur et la gloire, car tout, au ciel et sur la terre, vous appartient ; à vous, Yahweh, la royauté ; à vous de vous élever souverainement au-dessus de tout.

Yours, Yahweh, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty! For all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, Yahweh, and you are exalted as head above all.

De vous dérivent la richesse et la gloire ; vous dominez sur tout ; dans votre main est la force et la puissance, et à votre main il appartient de donner à toutes choses grandeur et solidité.

Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all! In your hand is power and might! It is in your hand to make great, and to give strength to all!

Maintenant donc, ô notre Dieu, nous vous louons et nous célébrons votre nom glorieux.

Now therefore, our God, we thank you, and praise your glorious name.

Car qui suis-je et qui est mon peuple, que nous ayons le pouvoir et la force de faire volontairement de pareilles offrandes ? Tout vient de vous, et nous vous donnons ce que nous avons reçu de votre main.

But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.

Car nous sommes devant vous des étrangers et des colons, comme l’étaient tous nos pères ; nos jours sur la terre sont comme l’ombre, et il n’y a pas d’espoir.

For we are strangers before you, and foreigners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no remaining.

Yahweh, notre Dieu, toutes ces richesses que nous avons préparées pour vous bâtir une maison pour votre saint nom, c’est de votre main qu’elles viennent, et c’est à vous que tout appartient.

Yahweh our God, all this store that we have prepared to build you a house for your holy name comes from your hand, and is all your own.

Je sais, ô mon Dieu, que vous sondez les cœurs et que vous aimez la droiture ; aussi j’ai fait volontairement toutes ces offrandes dans la droiture de mon cœur, et je vois maintenant avec joie votre peuple qui se trouve ici vous faire volontairement ses offrandes.

I know also, my God, that you try the heart, and have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things. Now I have seen with joy your people, who are present here, offer willingly to you.

Yahweh, Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, nos pères, gardez à jamais cette disposition comme la forme des sentiments du cœur de votre peuple, et tenez leur cœur tourné vers vous.

Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this desire forever in the thoughts of the heart of your people, and prepare their heart for you;

Et à mon fils Salomon donnez un cœur parfait pour observer vos commandements, vos préceptes et vos lois, pour les mettre tous en pratique et pour bâtir le palais pour lequel j’ai fait des préparatifs. »

and give to Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for which I have made provision.”

David dit à toute l’assemblée : « Bénissez donc Yahweh, votre Dieu. » Et toute l’assemblée bénit Yahweh, le Dieu de leurs pères ; ils s’inclinèrent et se prosternèrent devant Yahweh et devant le roi. 17. Chap. xxix, 21-25 : Onction de Salomon.

Then David said to all the assembly, “Now bless Yahweh your God!” All the assembly blessed Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads and prostrated themselves before Yahweh and the king.

Le lendemain de ce jour, ils immolèrent des victimes à Yahweh, et offrirent en holocauste à Yahweh mille taureaux, mille béliers et mille agneaux, avec les libations ordinaires, et d’autres sacrifices en grand nombre pour tout Israël ;

They sacrificed sacrifices to Yahweh, and offered burnt offerings to Yahweh, on the next day after that day, even one thousand bulls, one thousand rams, and one thousand lambs, with their drink offerings and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel,

ils mangèrent et burent ce jour-là devant Yahweh avec une grande joie. Pour la seconde fois, ils proclamèrent roi Salomon, fils de David, et l’oignirent comme chef devant Yahweh ; et ils oignirent Sadoc comme grand prêtre.

and ate and drank before Yahweh on that day with great gladness. They made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and anointed him before Yahweh to be prince, and Zadok to be priest.

Salomon s’assit sur le trône de Yahweh comme roi, à la place de David, son père ; il prospéra, et tout Israël lui obéit.

Then Solomon sat on the throne of Yahweh as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him.

Tous les chefs et les vaillants, même tous les fils du roi David, se soumirent au roi Salomon.

All the princes, the mighty men, and also all of the sons of king David submitted themselves to Solomon the king.

Yahweh magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and gave to him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

David, fils d’Isaï, régna sur tout Israël.

Now David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.

Le temps qu’il régna sur Israël fut de quarante ans ; il régna sept ans à Hébron, et il régna trente-trois ans à Jérusalem.

The time that he reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and he reigned thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

Il mourut dans une heureuse vieillesse, rassasié de jours, de richesse et de gloire ; et Salomon, son fils, régna à sa place.

He died at a good old age, full of days, riches, and honor; and Solomon his son reigned in his place.

with all his reign and his might, and the times that went over him, and over Israel, and over all the kingdoms of the countries.
