The return from exile and the rebuilding of the temple

The first half of the post-exilic Ezra–Nehemiah narrative: the return of the Judean exiles under the Persian decree of Cyrus, the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple, and the reforms led by the priest-scribe Ezra concerning intermarriage and Torah observance.

Capítulo 1

Y EN el primer año de Ciro rey de Persia, para que se cumpliese la palabra de Jehová por boca de Jeremías, excitó Jehová el espíritu de Ciro rey de Persia, el cual hizo pasar pregón por todo su reino, y también por escrito, diciendo:

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that Yahweh’s word by Jeremiah’s mouth might be accomplished, Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

Así ha dicho Ciro rey de Persia: Jehová Dios de los cielos me ha dado todos los reinos de la tierra, y me ha mandado que le edifique casa en Jerusalem, que está en Judá.

“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, ‘Yahweh, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he has commanded me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

¿Quién hay entre vosotros de todo su pueblo? Sea Dios con él, y suba á Jerusalem que está en Judá, y edifique la casa á Jehová Dios de Israel, (él es el Dios,) la cual está en Jerusalem.

Whoever there is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of Yahweh, the God of Israel (he is God), which is in Jerusalem.

Y á cualquiera que hubiere quedado de todos los lugares donde peregrinare, los hombres de su lugar le ayuden con plata, y oro, y hacienda, y con bestias; con dones voluntarios para la casa de Dios, la cual está en Jerusalem.

Whoever is left, in any place where he lives, let the men of his place help him with silver, with gold, with goods, and with animals, besides the freewill offering for God’s house which is in Jerusalem.’”

Entonces se levantaron los cabezas de las familias de Judá y de Benjamín, y los sacerdotes y Levitas, todos aquellos cuyo espíritu despertó Dios para subir á edificar la casa de Jehová, la cual está en Jerusalem.

Then the heads of fathers’ households of Judah and Benjamin, the priests, and the Levites, all whose spirit God had stirred to go up rose up to build Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem.

Y todos los que estaban en sus alrededores confortaron las manos de ellos con vasos de plata y de oro, con hacienda y bestias, y con cosas preciosas, á más de lo que se ofreció voluntariamente.

All those who were around them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, with animals, and with precious things, besides all that was willingly offered.

Y el rey Ciro sacó los vasos de la casa de Jehová, que Nabucodonosor había traspasado de Jerusalem, y puesto en la casa de sus dioses.

Also Cyrus the king brought out the vessels of Yahweh’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought out of Jerusalem, and had put in the house of his gods;

Sacólos pues Ciro rey de Persia, por mano de Mitrídates tesorero, el cual los dió por cuenta á Sesbassar príncipe de Judá.

even those, Cyrus king of Persia brought out by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and counted them out to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.

Y esta es la cuenta de ellos: treinta tazones de oro, mil tazones de plata, veinte y nueve cuchillos,

This is the number of them: thirty platters of gold, one thousand platters of silver, twenty-nine knives,

Treinta tazas de oro, cuatrocientas y diez otras tazas de plata, y mil otros vasos.

thirty bowls of gold, four hundred ten silver bowls of a second sort, and one thousand other vessels.

Todos los vasos de oro y de plata, cinco mil y cuatrocientos. Todos los hizo llevar Sesbassar con los que subieron del cautiverio de Babilonia á Jerusalem.

All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand four hundred. Sheshbazzar brought all these up when the captives were brought up from Babylon to Jerusalem.

Capítulo 2

Y ESTOS son los hijos de la provincia que subieron de la cautividad, de la transmigración que Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia hizo traspasar á Babilonia, y que volvieron á Jerusalem y á Judá, cada uno á su ciudad:

Now these are the children of the province, who went up out of the captivity of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away to Babylon, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, everyone to his city;

Los cuales vinieron con Zorobabel, Jesuá, Nehemías, Seraías, Reelaías, Mardochêo, Bilsán, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum y Baana. La cuenta de los varones del pueblo de Israel:

who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:

Los hijos de Paros, dos mil ciento setenta y dos;

The children of Parosh, two thousand one hundred seventy-two.

Los hijos de Sephatías, trescientos setenta y dos;

The children of Shephatiah, three hundred seventy-two.

Los hijos de Ara, setecientos setenta y cinco;

The children of Arah, seven hundred seventy-five.

The children of Solomon’s servants: the children of Sotai, the children of Hassophereth, the children of Peruda,

Los hijos de Jaala, los hijos de Darcón, los hijos de Giddel;

the children of Jaalah, the children of Darkon, the children of Giddel,

Los hijos de Sephatías, los hijos de Hatil, los hijos de Phochêreth-hassebaim, los hijos de Ami.

the children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth Hazzebaim, the children of Ami.

Todos los Nethineos, é hijos de los siervos de Salomón, trescientos noventa y dos.

All the temple servants, and the children of Solomon’s servants, were three hundred ninety-two.

Y estos fueron los que subieron de Tel-mela, Tel-harsa, Chêrub, Addan, é Immer, los cuales no pudieron mostrar la casa de sus padres, ni su linaje, si eran de Israel:

These were those who went up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer; but they could not show their fathers’ houses, and their offspring, whether they were of Israel:

Los hijos de Delaía, los hijos de Tobías, los hijos de Necoda, seiscientos cincuenta y dos.

the children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, the children of Nekoda, six hundred fifty-two.

Y de los hijos de los sacerdotes: los hijos de Abaía, los hijos de Cos, los hijos de Barzillai, el cual tomó mujer de las hijas de Barzillai Galaadita, y fué llamado del nombre de ellas.

Of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Hakkoz, and the children of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name.

Estos buscaron su registro de genealogías, y no fué hallado; y fueron echados del sacerdocio.

These sought their place among those who were registered by genealogy, but they were not found: therefore were they deemed disqualified and removed from the priesthood.

Y el Tirsatha les dijo que no comiesen de las cosas más santas, hasta que hubiese sacerdote con Urim y Thummim.

The governor told them that they should not eat of the most holy things until a priest stood up to serve with Urim and with Thummim.

Toda la congregación, unida como un solo hombre, era de cuarenta y dos mil trescientos y sesenta,

The whole assembly together was forty-two thousand three hundred sixty,

Sin sus siervos y siervas, los cuales eran siete mil trescientos treinta y siete: y tenían doscientos cantores y cantoras.

besides their male servants and their female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven; and they had two hundred singing men and singing women.

Sus caballos eran setecientos treinta y seis; sus mulos, doscientos cuarenta y cinco;

Their horses were seven hundred thirty-six; their mules, two hundred forty-five;

Sus camellos, cuatrocientos treinta y cinco; asnos, seis mil setecientos y veinte.

their camels, four hundred thirty-five; their donkeys, six thousand seven hundred twenty.

Y algunos de los cabezas de los padres, cuando vinieron á la casa de Jehová la cual estaba en Jerusalem, ofrecieron voluntariamente para la casa de Dios, para levantarla en su asiento.

Some of the heads of fathers’ households, when they came to Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem, offered willingly for God’s house to set it up in its place.

Según sus fuerzas dieron al tesorero de la obra sesenta y un mil dracmas de oro, y cinco mil libras de plata, y cien túnicas sacerdotales.

They gave according to their ability into the treasury of the work sixty-one thousand darics of gold, and five thousand minas of silver, and one hundred priests’ garments.

Y habitaron los sacerdotes, y los Levitas, y los del pueblo, y los cantores, y los porteros y los Nethineos, en sus ciudades; y todo Israel en sus ciudades.

So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, lived in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.

Capítulo 3

Y LLEGADO el mes séptimo, y ya los hijos de Israel en las ciudades, juntóse el pueblo como un solo hombre en Jerusalem.

When the seventh month had come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.

Entonces se levantó Jesuá hijo de Josadec, y sus hermanos los sacerdotes, y Zorobabel hijo de Sealthiel, y sus hermanos, y edificaron el altar del Dios de Israel, para ofrecer sobre él holocaustos, como está escrito en la ley de Moisés varón de Dios.

Then Jeshua the son of Jozadak stood up with his brothers the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and his brothers, and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.

Y asentaron el altar sobre sus basas, bien que tenían miedo de los pueblos de las tierras, y ofrecieron sobre él holocaustos á Jehová, holocaustos á la mañana y á la tarde.

In spite of their fear because of the peoples of the surrounding lands, they set the altar on its base; and they offered burnt offerings on it to Yahweh, even burnt offerings morning and evening.

Hicieron asimismo la solemnidad de las cabañas, como está escrito, y holocaustos cada día por cuenta, conforme al rito, cada cosa en su día;

They kept the feast of tents, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the ordinance, as the duty of every day required;

Y á más de esto, el holocausto continuo, y las nuevas lunas, y todas las fiestas santificadas de Jehová, y todo sacrificio espontáneo, toda ofrenda voluntaria á Jehová.

and afterward the continual burnt offering, the offerings of the new moons, of all the set feasts of Yahweh that were consecrated, and of everyone who willingly offered a freewill offering to Yahweh.

Desde el primer día del mes séptimo comenzaron á ofrecer holocaustos á Jehová; mas el templo de Jehová no estaba aún fundado.

From the first day of the seventh month, they began to offer burnt offerings to Yahweh; but the foundation of Yahweh’s temple was not yet laid.

Y dieron dinero á los carpinteros y oficiales; asimismo comida y bebida y aceite á los Sidonios y Tirios, para que trajesen madera de cedro del Líbano á la mar de Joppe, conforme á la voluntad de Ciro rey de Persia acerca de esto.

They also gave money to the masons, and to the carpenters. They also gave food, drink, and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea, to Joppa, according to the grant that they had from Cyrus King of Persia.

Y en el año segundo de su venida á la casa de Dios en Jerusalem, en el mes segundo, comenzaron Zorobabel hijo de Sealthiel, y Jesuá hijo de Josadec, y los otros sus hermanos, los sacerdotes y los Levitas, y todos los que habían venido de la cautividad á Jerusalem; y pusieron á los Levitas de veinte años arriba para que tuviesen cargo de la obra de la casa de Jehová.

Now in the second year of their coming to God’s house at Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites, and all those who had come out of the captivity to Jerusalem, began the work and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to have the oversight of the work of Yahweh’s house.

Jesuá también, sus hijos y sus hermanos, Cadmiel y sus hijos, hijos de Judá, como un solo hombre asistían para dar priesa á los que hacían la obra en la casa de Dios: los hijos de Henadad, sus hijos y sus hermanos, Levitas.

Then Jeshua stood with his sons and his brothers, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to have the oversight of the workmen in God’s house: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brothers the Levites.

Y cuando los albañiles del templo de Jehová echaban los cimientos, pusieron á los sacerdotes vestidos de sus ropas, con trompetas, y á Levitas hijos de Asaph con címbalos, para que alabasen á Jehová, según ordenanza de David rey de Israel.

When the builders laid the foundation of Yahweh’s temple, they set the priests in their clothing with trumpets, with the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise Yahweh, according to the directions of David king of Israel.

Y cantaban, alabando y confesando á Jehová, y decían: Porque es bueno, porque para siempre es su misericordia sobre Israel. Y todo el pueblo aclamaba con grande júbilo, alabando á Jehová, porque á la casa de Jehová se echaba el cimiento.

They sang to one another in praising and giving thanks to Yahweh, “For he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever toward Israel.” All the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised Yahweh, because the foundation of Yahweh’s house had been laid.

Y muchos de los sacerdotes y de los Levitas y de los cabezas de los padres, ancianos que habían visto la casa primera, viendo fundar esta casa, lloraban en alta voz, mientras muchos otros daban grandes gritos de alegría.

But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ households, the old men who had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice. Many also shouted aloud for joy,

Y no podía discernir el pueblo el clamor de los gritos de alegría, de la voz del lloro del pueblo: porque clamaba el pueblo con grande júbilo, y oíase el ruido hasta de lejos.

so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard far away.

Capítulo 4

Y OYENDO los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín, que los venidos de la cautividad edificaban el templo de Jehová Dios de Israel,

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple to Yahweh, the God of Israel;

Llegáronse á Zorobabel, y á los cabezas de los padres, y dijéronles: Edificaremos con vosotros, porque como vosotros buscaremos á vuestro Dios, y á él sacrificamos desde los días de Esar-haddón rey de Asiria, que nos hizo subir aquí.

they came near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as you do; and we have been sacrificing to him since the days of Esar Haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.”

Y díjoles Zorobabel, y Jesuá, y los demás cabezas de los padres de Israel: No nos conviene edificar con vosotros casa á nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos á Jehová Dios de Israel, como nos mandó el rey Ciro, rey de Persia.

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel, said to them, “You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to Yahweh, the God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”

Mas el pueblo de la tierra debilitaba las manos del pueblo de Judá, y los arredraban de edificar.

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building.

Cohecharon además contra ellos consejeros para disipar su consejo, todo el tiempo de Ciro rey de Persia, y hasta el reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

They hired counselors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Y en el reinado de Assuero, en el principio de su reinado, escribieron acusaciones contra los moradores de Judá y de Jerusalem.

In the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

Y en días de Artajerjes, Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel, y los demás sus compañeros, escribieron á Artajerjes rey de Persia; y la escritura de la carta estaba hecha en siriaco, y declarada en siriaco.

In the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in Syrian, and delivered in the Syrian language.

Rehum canciller, y Simsai secretario, escribieron una carta contra Jerusalem al rey Artajerjes, como se sigue.

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows,

Entonces Rehum canciller, y Simsai secretario, y los demás sus compañeros, los Dineos, y los Apharsathachêos, Thepharleos, Apharseos, los Erchûeos, los Babilonios, Susanchêos, Dieveos, y Elamitas;

then Rehum the chancellor, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,

Y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnappar trasportó, é hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria, y los demás de la otra parte del río, etcétera, escribieron.

and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar brought over, and set in the city of Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River, and so forth, wrote.

Este es el traslado de la carta que enviaron: Al rey Artajerjes: Tus siervos de la otra parte del río, etcétera.

This is the copy of the letter that they sent: To King Artaxerxes, From your servants the men beyond the River.

Sea notorio al rey, que los Judíos que subieron de ti á nosotros, vinieron á Jerusalem; y edifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y han erigido los muros; y compuesto los fundamentos.

Be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and bad city, and have finished the walls, and repaired the foundations.

Ahora, notorio sea al rey, que si aquella ciudad fuere reedificada, y los muros fueren establecidos, el tributo, pecho, y rentas no darán, y el catastro de lo reyes será menoscabado.

Be it known now to the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings.

Ya pues que estamos mantenidos de palacio, no nos es justo ver el menosprecio del rey: hemos enviado por tanto, y hécholo saber al rey,

Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not appropriate for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and informed the king,

Para que busque en el libro de las historias de nuestros padres; y hallarás en el libro de las historias, y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, y perjudicial á los reyes y á las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo forman en medio de ella rebeliones; por lo que esta ciudad fué destruída.

that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will see in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have started rebellions within it in the past. That is why this city was destroyed.

Hacemos saber al rey, que si esta ciudad fuere edificada, y erigidos sus muros, la parte allá del río no será tuya.

We inform the king that, if this city is built and the walls finished, then you will have no possession beyond the River.

El rey envió esta respuesta á Rehum canciller, y á Simsai secretario, y á los demás sus compañeros que habitan en Samaria, y á los demás de la parte allá del río: Paz, etc.

Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions who live in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace.

La carta que nos enviasteis claramente fué leída delante de mí.

The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me.

Y por mí fué dado mandamiento, y buscaron, y hallaron que aquella ciudad de tiempo antiguo se levanta contra los reyes, y se rebela, y se forma en ella sedición:

I decreed, and search has been made, and it was found that this city has made insurrection against kings in the past, and that rebellion and revolts have been made in it.

Y que reyes fuertes hubo en Jerusalem, quienes señorearon en todo lo que está á la parte allá del río; y que tributo, y pecho, y rentas se les daba.

There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll, was paid to them.

Ahora pues dad orden que cesen aquellos hombres, y no sea esa ciudad edificada, hasta que por mí sea dado mandamiento.

Make a decree now to cause these men to cease, and that this city not be built, until a decree is made by me.

Y mirad bien que no hagáis error en esto: ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño para perjuicio de los reyes?

Be careful that you not be slack doing so. Why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

Entonces, cuando el traslado de la carta del rey Artajerjes fué leído delante de Rehum, y de Simsai secretario, y sus compañeros, fueron prestamente á Jerusalem á los Judíos, é hiciéronles cesar con poder y fuerza.

Then when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force of arms.

Cesó entonces la obra de la casa de Dios, la cual estaba en Jerusalem: y cesó hasta el año segundo del reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

Then work stopped on God’s house which is at Jerusalem. It stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Capítulo 5

Y PROFETIZARON Haggeo profeta, y Zacarías hijo de Iddo, profetas, á los Judíos que estaban en Judá y en Jerusalem yendo en nombre del Dios de Israel á ellos.

Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem. They prophesied to them in the name of the God of Israel.

Entonces se levantaron Zorobabel hijo de Sealthiel, y Jesuá hijo de Josadec; y comenzaron á edificar la casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalem; y con ellos los profetas de Dios que les ayudaban.

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak rose up and began to build God’s house which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them.

En aquel tiempo vino á ellos Tatnai, capitán de la parte allá del río, y Sethar-boznai y sus compañeros, y dijéronles así: ¿Quién os dió mandamiento para edificar esta casa, y restablecer estos muros?

At the same time Tattenai, the governor beyond the River came to them, with Shetharbozenai, and their companions, and asked them, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?”

Entonces les dijimos en orden á esto cuáles eran los nombres de los varones que edificaban este edificio.

They also asked for the names of the men were who were making this building.

Mas los ojos de su Dios fueron sobre los ancianos de los Judíos, y no les hicieron cesar hasta que el negocio viniese á Darío: y entonces respondieron por carta sobre esto.

But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, until the matter should come to Darius, and an answer should be returned by letter concerning it.

Traslado de la carta que Tatnai, capitán de la parte allá del río, y Sethar-boznai, y sus compañeros los Apharsachêos, que estaban á la parte allá del río, enviaron al rey Darío.

The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king follows.

Enviáronle carta, y de esta manera estaba escrito en ella. Al rey Darío toda paz.

They sent a letter to him, in which was written: To Darius the king, all peace.

Sea notorio al rey, que fuimos á la provincia de Judea, á la casa del gran Dios, la cual se edifica de piedra de mármol; y los maderos son puestos en las paredes, y la obra se hace apriesa, y prospera en sus manos.

Be it known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is built with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on with diligence and prospers in their hands.

Entonces preguntamos á los ancianos, diciéndoles así: ¿Quién os dió mandamiento para edificar esta casa, y para restablecer estos muros?

Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?”

Y también les preguntamos sus nombres para hacértelo saber, para escribirte los nombres de los varones que estaban por cabezas de ellos.

We asked them their names also, to inform you that we might write the names of the men who were at their head.

Y respondiéronnos, diciendo así: Nosotros somos siervos del Dios del cielo y de la tierra, y reedificamos la casa que ya muchos años antes había sido edificada, la cual edificó y fundó el gran rey de Israel.

Thus they returned us answer, saying, “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished.

Mas después que nuestros padres ensañaron al Dios de los cielos, él los entregó en mano de Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, Caldeo, el cual destruyó esta casa, é hizo trasportar el pueblo á Babilonia.

But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

Empero el primer año de Ciro rey de Babilonia, el mismo rey Ciro dió mandamiento para que esta casa de Dios fuese edificada.

But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God.

Y también los vasos de oro y de plata de la casa de Dios, que Nabucodonosor había sacado del templo que estaba en Jerusalem, y los había metido en el templo de Babilonia, el rey Ciro los sacó del templo de Babilonia, y fueron entregados á Sesbassar, al cual había puesto por gobernador;

The gold and silver vessels of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king also took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor.

Y le dijo: Toma estos vasos, ve y ponlos en el templo que está en Jerusalem; y la casa de Dios sea edificada en su lugar.

He said to him, ‘Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let God’s house be built in its place.’

Entonces este Sesbassar vino, y puso los fundamentos de la casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalem, y desde entonces hasta ahora se edifica, y aun no está acabada.

Then the same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of God’s house which is in Jerusalem. Since that time even until now has it been in building, and yet it is not completed.

Y ahora, si al rey parece bien, búsquese en la casa de los tesoros del rey que está allí en Babilonia, si es así que por el rey Ciro había sido dado mandamiento para edificar esta casa de Dios en Jerusalem, y envíenos á decir la voluntad del rey sobre esto.

Now therefore, if it seems good to the king, let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it is so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”

Capítulo 6

ENTONCES el rey Darío dió mandamiento, y buscaron en la casa de los libros, donde guardaban los tesoros allí en Babilonia.

Then Darius the king made a decree, and the house of the archives, where the treasures were laid up in Babylon, was searched.

Y fué hallado en Achmetta, en el palacio que está en la provincia de Media, un libro, dentro del cual estaba escrito así: Memoria:

A scroll was found at Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of Media, and in it this was written for a record:

En el año primero del rey Ciro, el mismo rey Ciro dió mandamiento acerca de la casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalem, que fuese la casa edificada para lugar en que sacrifiquen sacrificios, y que sus paredes fuesen cubiertas; su altura de sesenta codos, y de sesenta codos su anchura;

In the first year of Cyrus the king, Cyrus the king made a decree: Concerning God’s house at Jerusalem, let the house be built, the place where they offer sacrifices, and let its foundations be strongly laid; with its height sixty cubits, and its width sixty cubits;

Los órdenes, tres de piedra de mármol, y un orden de madera nueva: y que el gasto sea dado de la casa del rey.

with three courses of great stones and a course of new timber. Let the expenses be given out of the king’s house.

Y también los vasos de oro y de plata de la casa de Dios, que Nabucodonosor sacó del templo que estaba en Jerusalem y los pasó á Babilonia, sean devueltos y vayan al templo que está en Jerusalem, á su lugar, y sean puestos en la casa de Dios.

Also let the gold and silver vessels of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought to Babylon, be restored and brought again to the temple which is at Jerusalem, everything to its place. You shall put them in God’s house.

Ahora pues, Tatnai, jefe del lado allá del río, Sethar-boznai, y sus compañeros los Apharsachêos que estáis á la otra parte del río, apartaos de ahí.

Now therefore, Tattenai, governor beyond the River, Shetharbozenai, and your companions the Apharsachites, who are beyond the River, you must stay far from there.

Dejad la obra de la casa de este Dios al principal de los Judíos, y á sus ancianos, para que edifiquen la casa de este Dios en su lugar.

Leave the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in its place.

Y por mí es dado mandamiento de lo que habéis de hacer con los ancianos de estos Judíos, para edificar la casa de este Dios: que de la hacienda del rey, que tiene del tributo de la parte allá del río, los gastos sean dados luego á aquellos varones, para que no cesen.

Moreover I make a decree what you shall do for these elders of the Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the River, expenses must be given with all diligence to these men, that they not be hindered.

Y lo que fuere necesario, becerros y carneros y corderos, para holocaustos al Dios del cielo, trigo, sal, vino y aceite, conforme á lo que dijeren los sacerdotes que están en Jerusalem, déseles cada un día sin obstáculo alguno;

That which they have need of, including young bulls, rams, and lambs, for burnt offerings to the God of heaven; also wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the word of the priests who are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail;

Para que ofrezcan olores de holganza al Dios del cielo, y oren por la vida del rey y por sus hijos.

that they may offer sacrifices of pleasant aroma to the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons.

También es dado por mí mandamiento, que cualquiera que mudare este decreto, sea derribado un madero de su casa, y enhiesto, sea colgado en él: y su casa sea hecha muladar por esto.

I have also made a decree that whoever alters this message, let a beam be pulled out from his house, and let him be lifted up and fastened on it; and let his house be made a dunghill for this.

Y el Dios que hizo habitar allí su nombre, destruya todo rey y pueblo que pusiere su mano para mudar ó destruir esta casa de Dios, la cual está en Jerusalem. Yo Darío puse el decreto: sea hecho prestamente.

May the God who has caused his name to dwell there overthrow all kings and peoples who stretch out their hand to alter the same, to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I Darius have made a decree. Let it be done with all diligence.

Entonces Tatnai, gobernador del otro lado del río, y Sethar-boznai, y sus compañeros, hicieron prestamente según el rey Darío había enviado.

Then Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, Shetharbozenai, and their companions did accordingly with all diligence, because Darius the king had sent a decree.

Y los ancianos de los Judíos edificaban y prosperaban, conforme á la profecía de Haggeo profeta, y de Zacarías hijo de Iddo. Edificaron pues, y acabaron, por el mandamiento del Dios de Israel, y por el mandamiento de Ciro, y de Darío, y de Artajerjes rey de Persia.

The elders of the Jews built and prospered, through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. They built and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the decree of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.

Y esta casa fué acabada al tercer día del mes de Adar, que era el sexto año del reinado del rey Darío.

This house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.

Y los hijos de Israel, los sacerdotes y los Levitas, y los demás que habían venido de la trasportación, hicieron la dedicación de esta casa de Dios con gozo.

The children of Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy.

Y ofrecieron en la dedicación de esta casa de Dios cien becerros, doscientos carneros, cuatrocientos corderos; y machos de cabrío en expiación por todo Israel, doce, conforme al número de las tribus de Israel.

They offered at the dedication of this house of God one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve male goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.

Y pusieron á los sacerdotes en sus clases, y á los Levitas en sus divisiones, sobre la obra de Dios que está en Jerusalem, conforme á lo escrito en el libro de Moisés.

They set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem, as it is written in the book of Moses.

Y los de la transmigración hicieron la pascua á los catorce del mes primero.

The children of the captivity kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.

Porque los sacerdotes y los Levitas se habían purificado á una; todos fueron limpios: y sacrificaron la pascua por todos los de la transmigración, y por sus hermanos los sacerdotes, y por sí mismos.

Because the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together, all of them were pure. They killed the Passover for all the children of the captivity, for their brothers the priests, and for themselves.

Y comieron los hijos de Israel que habían vuelto de la transmigración, y todos los que se habían apartado á ellos de la inmundicia de las gentes de la tierra, para buscar á Jehová Dios de Israel.

The children of Israel who had returned out of the captivity, and all who had separated themselves to them from the filthiness of the nations of the land, to seek Yahweh, the God of Israel, ate,

Y celebraron la solemnidad de los panes ázimos siete días con regocijo, por cuanto Jehová los había alegrado, y convertido el corazón del rey de Asiria á ellos, para esforzar sus manos en la obra de la casa de Dios, del Dios de Israel.

and kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy; because Yahweh had made them joyful, and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria to them, to strengthen their hands in the work of God, the God of Israel’s house.

Capítulo 7

PASADAS estas cosas, en el reinado de Artajerjes rey de Persia, Esdras, hijo de Seraías, hijo de Azarías, hijo de Hilcías,

Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

Hijo de Sallum, hijo de Sadoc, hijo de Achîtob,

the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,

Hijo de Amarías, hijo de Azarías, hijo de Meraioth,

the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,

Hijo de Zeraías, hijo de Uzzi, hijo de Bucci,

the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki,

Hijo de Abisue, hijo de Phinees, hijo de Eleazar, hijo de Aarón, primer sacerdote:

the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest—

Este Esdras subió de Babilonia, el cual era escriba diligente en la ley de Moisés, que Jehová Dios de Israel había dado; y concedióle el rey, según la mano de Jehová su Dios sobre él, todo lo que pidió.

this Ezra went up from Babylon. He was a skilled scribe in the law of Moses, which Yahweh, the God of Israel, had given; and the king granted him all his request, according to Yahweh his God’s hand on him.

Y subieron con él á Jerusalem de los hijos de Israel, y de los sacerdotes, y Levitas, y cantores, y porteros, y Nethineos, en el séptimo año del rey Artajerjes.

Some of the children of Israel, including some of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

Y llegó á Jerusalem en el mes quinto, el año séptimo del rey.

He came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.

Porque el día primero del primer mes fué el principio de la partida de Babilonia, y al primero del mes quinto llegó á Jerusalem, según la buena mano de su Dios sobre él.

For on the first day of the first month he began to go up from Babylon; and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God on him.

Porque Esdras había preparado su corazón para inquirir la ley de Jehová, y para hacer y enseñar á Israel mandamientos y juicios.

For Ezra had set his heart to seek Yahweh’s law, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.

Y este es el traslado de la carta que dió el rey Artajerjes á Esdras, sacerdote escriba, escriba de las palabras mandadas de Jehová, y de sus estatutos á Israel:

Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, even the scribe of the words of Yahweh’s commandments, and of his statutes to Israel:

Artajerjes, rey de los reyes, á Esdras sacerdote, escriba perfecto de la ley del Dios del cielo: Salud, etc.

Artaxerxes, king of kings, To Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the perfect God of heaven. Now

Por mí es dado mandamiento, que cualquiera que quisiere en mi reino, del pueblo de Israel y de sus sacerdotes y Levitas, ir contigo á Jerusalem, vaya.

I make a decree, that all those of the people of Israel, and their priests and the Levites, in my realm, who intend of their own free will to go to Jerusalem, go with you.

Porque de parte del rey y de sus siete consultores eres enviado á visitar á Judea y á Jerusalem, conforme á la ley de tu Dios que está en tu mano;

Because you are sent by the king and his seven counselors, to inquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of your God which is in your hand,

Y á llevar la plata y el oro que el rey y sus consultores voluntariamente ofrecen al Dios de Israel, cuya morada está en Jerusalem;

and to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem,

Y toda la plata y el oro que hallares en toda la provincia de Babilonia, con las ofrendas voluntarias del pueblo y de los sacerdotes, que de su voluntad ofrecieren para la casa de su Dios que está en Jerusalem.

and all the silver and gold that you will find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem;

Comprarás pues prestamente con esta plata becerros, carneros, corderos, con sus presentes y sus libaciones, y los ofrecerás sobre el altar de la casa de vuestro Dios que está en Jerusalem.

therefore you shall with all diligence buy with this money bulls, rams, lambs, with their meal offerings and their drink offerings, and shall offer them on the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.

Y lo que á ti y á tus hermanos pluguiere hacer de la otra plata y oro, hacedlo conforme á la voluntad de vuestro Dios.

Whatever seems good to you and to your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, do that according to the will of your God.

Y los vasos que te son entregados para el servicio de la casa de tu Dios, los restituirás delante de Dios en Jerusalem.

The vessels that are given to you for the service of the house of your God, deliver before the God of Jerusalem.

Y lo demás necesario para la casa de tu Dios que te fuere menester dar, daráslo de la casa de los tesoros del rey.

Whatever more will be needed for the house of your God, which you may have occasion to give, give it out of the king’s treasure house.

Y por mí el rey Artajerjes es dado mandamiento á todos los tesoreros que están al otro lado del río, que todo lo que os demandare Esdras sacerdote, escriba de la ley del Dios del cielo, concédasele luego,

I, even I Artaxerxes the king, make a decree to all the treasurers who are beyond the River, that whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, requires of you, it shall be done with all diligence,

Hasta cien talentos de plata, y hasta cien coros de trigo, y hasta cien batos de vino, y hasta cien batos de aceite; y sal sin tasa.

up to one hundred talents of silver, and to one hundred cors of wheat, and to one hundred baths of wine, and to one hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much.

Todo lo que es mandado por el Dios del cielo, sea hecho prestamente para la casa del Dios del cielo: pues, ¿por qué habría de ser su ira contra el reino del rey y de sus hijos?

Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be done exactly for the house of the God of heaven; for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?

Y á vosotros os hacemos saber, que á todos los sacerdotes y Levitas, cantores, porteros, Nethineos y ministros de la casa de Dios, ninguno pueda imponerles tributo, ó pecho, ó renta.

Also we inform you that it shall not be lawful to impose tribute, custom, or toll, on any of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants, or laborers of this house of God.

Y tú, Esdras, conforme á la sabiduría de tu Dios que tienes, pon jueces y gobernadores, que gobiernen á todo el pueblo que está del otro lado del río, á todos los que tienen noticia de las leyes de tu Dios; y al que no la tuviere, le enseñaréis.

You, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God that is in your hand, appoint magistrates and judges, who may judge all the people who are beyond the River, who all know the laws of your God; and teach him who doesn’t know them.

Y cualquiera que no hiciere la ley de tu Dios, y la ley del rey, prestamente sea juzgado, ó á muerte, ó á desarraigo, ó á pena de la hacienda, ó á prisión.

Whoever will not do the law of your God and the law of the king, let judgment be executed on him with all diligence, whether it is to death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.

Bendito Jehová, Dios de nuestros padres, que puso tal cosa en el corazón del rey, para honrar la casa de Jehová que está en Jerusalem.

Blessed be Yahweh, the God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem;

E inclinó hacia mí su misericordia delante del rey y de sus consultores, y de todos los príncipes poderosos del rey. Y yo, confortado según la mano de mi Dios sobre mí, junté los principales de Israel para que subiesen conmigo.

and has extended loving kindness to me before the king and his counselors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. I was strengthened according to Yahweh my God’s hand on me, and I gathered together chief men out of Israel to go up with me.

Capítulo 8

Y ESTOS son los cabezas de sus familias, y genealogía de aquellos que subieron conmigo de Babilonia, reinando el rey Artajerjes:

Now these are the heads of their fathers’ households, and this is the genealogy of those who went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king:

De los hijos de Phinees, Gersón; de los hijos de Ithamar, Daniel; de los hijos de David, Hattus;

Of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom. Of the sons of Ithamar, Daniel. Of the sons of David, Hattush.

De los hijos de Sechânías y de los hijos de Pharos, Zacarías, y con él, en la línea de varones, ciento y cincuenta;

Of the sons of Shecaniah, of the sons of Parosh, Zechariah; and with him were listed by genealogy of the males one hundred fifty.

De los hijos de Pahath-moab, Elioenai, hijo de Zarahi, y con él doscientos varones;

Of the sons of Pahathmoab, Eliehoenai the son of Zerahiah; and with him two hundred males.

De los hijos de Sechânías, el hijo de Jahaziel, y con él trescientos varones;

Of the sons of Shecaniah, the son of Jahaziel; and with him three hundred males.

De los hijos de Adín, Ebed, hijo de Jonathán, y con él cincuenta varones;

Of the sons of Adin, Ebed the son of Jonathan; and with him fifty males.

De los hijos de Elam, Isaía, hijo de Athalías, y con él setenta varones;

Of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah; and with him seventy males.

Y de los hijos de Sephatías, Zebadías, hijo de Michâel, y con él ochenta varones;

Of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael; and with him eighty males.

De los hijos de Joab, Obadías, hijo de Jehiel, y con él doscientos diez y ocho varones;

Of the sons of Joab, Obadiah the son of Jehiel; and with him two hundred eighteen males.

Y de los hijos de Solomith, el hijo de Josiphías, y con él ciento y sesenta varones;

Of the sons of Shelomith, the son of Josiphiah; and with him one hundred sixty males.

Y de los hijos de Bebai, Zacarías, hijo de Bebai, y con él veintiocho varones;

Of the sons of Bebai, Zechariah the son of Bebai; and with him twenty-eight males.

Y de los hijos de Azgad, Johanán, hijo de Catán, y con él ciento y diez varones;

Of the sons of Azgad, Johanan the son of Hakkatan; and with him one hundred ten males.

Y de los hijos de Adonicam, los postreros, cuyos nombres son estos, Eliphelet, Jeiel, y Semaías, y con ellos sesenta varones;

Of the sons of Adonikam, who were the last; and these are their names: Eliphelet, Jeuel, and Shemaiah; and with them sixty males.

Y de los hijos de Bigvai, Utai y Zabud, y con ellos sesenta varones.

Of the sons of Bigvai, Uthai and Zabbud; and with them seventy males.

Y juntélos junto al río que viene á Ahava, y reposamos allí tres días: y habiendo buscado entre el pueblo y entre los sacerdotes, no hallé allí de los hijos de Leví.

I gathered them together to the river that runs to Ahava; and there we encamped three days: and I looked around at the people the priests, and found there were none of the sons of Levi.

Entonces despaché á Eliezer, y á Ariel, y á Semaías, y á Elnathán, y á Jarib, y á Elnathán, y á Nathán, y á Zacarías, y á Mesullam, principales; asimismo á Joiarib y á Elnathán, hombres doctos;

Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, for Elnathan, for Jarib, for Elnathan, for Nathan, for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib and for Elnathan, who were teachers.

Y enviélos á Iddo, jefe en el lugar de Casipia, y puse en boca de ellos las palabras que habían de hablar á Iddo, y á sus hermanos los Nethineos en el lugar de Casipia, para que nos trajesen ministros para la casa de nuestro Dios.

I sent them out to Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia; and I told them what they should tell Iddo, and his brothers the temple servants, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring to us ministers for the house of our God.

Y trajéronnos, según la buena mano de nuestro Dios sobre nosotros, un varón entendido de los hijos de Mahalí, hijo de Leví, hijo de Israel; y á Serabías con sus hijos y sus hermanos, dieciocho;

According to the good hand of our God on us they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brothers, eighteen;

Y á Hasabías, y con él á Isaía de los hijos de Merari, á sus hermanos y á sus hijos, veinte;

and Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brothers and their sons, twenty;

Y de los Nethineos, á quienes David con los príncipes puso para el ministerio de los Levitas, doscientos y veinte Nethineos: todos los cuales fueron declarados por sus nombres.

and of the temple servants, whom David and the princes had given for the service of the Levites, two hundred twenty temple servants. All of them were mentioned by name.

Y publiqué ayuno allí junto al río de Ahava, para afligirnos delante de nuestro Dios, para solicitar de él camino derecho para nosotros, y para nuestros niños, y para toda nuestra hacienda.

Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a straight way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our possessions.

Porque tuve vergüenza de pedir al rey tropa y gente de á caballo que nos defendiesen del enemigo en el camino: porque habíamos hablado al rey, diciendo: La mano de nuestro Dios es para bien sobre todos los que le buscan; mas su fortaleza y su furor sobre todos los que le dejan.

For I was ashamed to ask of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the way, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is on all those who seek him, for good; but his power and his wrath is against all those who forsake him.”

Ayunamos pues, y pedimos á nuestro Dios sobre esto, y él nos fué propicio.

So we fasted and begged our God for this: and he granted our request.

Aparté luego doce de los principales de los sacerdotes, á Serebías y á Hasabías, y con ellos diez de sus hermanos;

Then I set apart twelve of the chiefs of the priests, even Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brothers with them,

Y peséles la plata, y el oro, y los vasos, la ofrenda que para la casa de nuestro Dios habían ofrecido el rey, y sus consultores, y sus príncipes, y todos los que se hallaron en Israel.

and weighed to them the silver, the gold, and the vessels, even the offering for the house of our God, which the king, his counselors, his princes, and all Israel there present, had offered.

Pesé pues en manos de ellos seiscientos y cincuenta talentos de plata, y vasos de plata por cien talentos, y cien talentos de oro;

I weighed into their hand six hundred fifty talents of silver, one hundred talents of silver vessels; one hundred talents of gold,

Además veinte tazones de oro, de mil dracmas; y dos vasos de metal limpio muy bueno, preciados como el oro.

twenty bowls of gold weighing one thousand darics; and two vessels of fine bright brass, precious as gold.

Y díjeles: Vosotros sois consagrados á Jehová, y santos los vasos; y la plata y el oro ofrenda voluntaria á Jehová, Dios de nuestros padres.

I said to them, “You are holy to Yahweh, and the vessels are holy. The silver and the gold are a freewill offering to Yahweh, the God of your fathers.

Velad, y guardadlos, hasta que los peséis delante de los príncipes de los sacerdotes y Levitas, y de los jefes de los padres de Israel en Jerusalem, en las cámaras de la casa de Jehová.

Watch and keep them, until you weigh them before the chiefs of the priests and the Levites, and the princes of the fathers’ households of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the rooms of Yahweh’s house.”

Los sacerdotes pues y Levitas recibieron el peso de la plata y del oro y de los vasos, para traerlo á Jerusalem á la casa de nuestro Dios.

So the priests and the Levites received the weight of the silver and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem to the house of our God.

Y partimos del río de Ahava el doce del mes primero, para ir á Jerusalem: y la mano de nuestro Dios fué sobre nosotros, el cual nos libró de mano de enemigo y de asechador en el camino.

Then we departed from the river Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and the bandit by the way.

Y llegamos á Jerusalem, y reposamos allí tres días.

We came to Jerusalem, and stayed there three days.

Al cuarto día fué luego pesada la plata, y el oro, y los vasos, en la casa de nuestro Dios, por mano de Meremoth hijo de Urías sacerdote, y con él Eleazar hijo de Phinees; y con ellos Jozabad hijo de Jesuá, y Noadías hijo de Binnui, Levitas;

On the fourth day the silver and the gold and the vessels were weighed in the house of our God into the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, the Levite;

Por cuenta y por peso todo: y se apuntó todo aquel peso en aquel tiempo.

everything by number and by weight; and all the weight was written at that time.

Los que habían venido de la cautividad, los hijos de la transmigración, ofrecieron holocaustos al Dios de Israel, doce becerros por todo Israel, noventa y seis carneros, setenta y siete corderos, doce machos cabríos por expiación: todo en holocausto á Jehová.

The children of the captivity, who had come out of exile, offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel, twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve male goats for a sin offering. All this was a burnt offering to Yahweh.

Y dieron los despachos del rey á sus gobernadores y capitanes del otro lado del río, los cuales favorecieron al pueblo y á la casa de Dios.

They delivered the king’s commissions to the king’s satraps, and to the governors beyond the River. So they supported the people and God’s house.

Capítulo 9

Y ACABADAS estas cosas, los príncipes se llegaron á mí, diciendo: El pueblo de Israel, y los sacerdotes y Levitas, no se han apartado de los pueblos de las tierras, de los Cananeos, Hetheos, Pherezeos, Jebuseos, Ammonitas, y Moabitas, Egipcios, y Amorrheos, haciendo conforme á sus abominaciones.

Now when these things were done, the princes came near to me, saying, “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, following their abominations, even those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

Porque han tomado de sus hijas para sí y para sus hijos, y la simiente santa ha sido mezclada con los pueblos de las tierras; y la mano de los príncipes y de los gobernadores ha sido la primera en esta prevaricación.

For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy offspring have mixed themselves with the peoples of the lands. Yes, the hand of the princes and rulers has been chief in this trespass.”

Lo cual oyendo yo, rasgué mi vestido y mi manto, y arranqué de los cabellos de mi cabeza y de mi barba, y sentéme atónito.

When I heard this thing, I tore my garment and my robe, and pulled the hair out of my head and of my beard, and sat down confounded.

Y juntáronse á mí todos los temerosos de las palabras del Dios de Israel, á causa de la prevaricación de los de la transmigración; mas yo estuve sentado atónito hasta el sacrificio de la tarde.

Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel were assembled to me, because of their trespass of the captivity; and I sat confounded until the evening offering.

Y al sacrificio de la tarde levantéme de mi aflicción; y habiendo rasgado mi vestido y mi manto, postréme de rodillas, y extendí mis palmas á Jehová mi Dios;

At the evening offering I arose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe torn; and I fell on my knees, and spread out my hands to Yahweh my God;

Y dije: Dios mío, confuso y avergonzado estoy para levantar, oh Dios mío, mi rostro á ti: porque nuestras iniquidades se han multiplicado sobre nuestra cabeza, y nuestros delitos han crecido hasta el cielo.

and I said, “My God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God; for our iniquities have increased over our head, and our guiltiness has grown up to the heavens.

Desde los días de nuestros padres hasta este día estamos en grande culpa; y por nuestras iniquidades nosotros, nuestros reyes, y nuestros sacerdotes, hemos sido entregados en manos de los reyes de las tierras, á cuchillo, á cautiverio, y á robo, y á confusión de rostro, como hoy día.

Since the days of our fathers we have been exceeding guilty to this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests, have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

Y ahora como por un breve momento fué la misericordia de Jehová nuestro Dios, para hacer que nos quedase un resto libre, y para darnos estaca en el lugar de su santuario, á fin de alumbrar nuestros ojos nuestro Dios, y darnos una poca de vida en nuestra servidumbre.

Now for a little moment grace has been shown from Yahweh our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and revived us a little in our bondage.

Porque siervos éramos: mas en nuestra servidumbre no nos desamparó nuestro Dios, antes inclinó sobre nosotros misericordia delante de los reyes de Persia, para que se nos diese vida para alzar la casa de nuestro Dios, y para hacer restaurar sus asolamientos, y para darnos vallado en Judá y en Jerusalem.

For we are bondservants; yet our God has not forsaken us in our bondage, but has extended loving kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to revive us, to set up the house of our God, and to repair its ruins, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

Mas ahora, ¿qué diremos, oh Dios nuestro, después de esto? porque nosotros hemos dejado tus mandamientos,

“Now, our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,

Los cuales prescribiste por mano de tus siervos los profetas, diciendo: La tierra á la cual entráis para poseerla, tierra inmunda es á causa de la inmundicia de los pueblos de aquellas regiones, por las abominaciones de que la han henchido de uno á otro extremo con su inmundicia.

which you have commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land, to which you go to possess it, is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, through their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their filthiness.

Ahora pues, no daréis vuestras hijas á los hijos de ellos, ni sus hijas tomaréis para vuestros hijos, ni procuraréis su paz ni su bien para siempre; para que seáis corroborados, y comáis el bien de la tierra, y la dejéis por heredad á vuestros hijos para siempre.

Now therefore don’t give your daughters to their sons. Don’t take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity forever; that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.’

Mas después de todo lo que nos ha sobrevenido á causa de nuestras malas obras, y á causa de nuestro grande delito; ya que tú, Dios nuestro, estorbaste que fuésemos oprimidos bajo de nuestras iniquidades, y nos diste este tal efugio;

“After all that has come on us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, since you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such a remnant,

¿Hemos de volver á infringir tus mandamientos, y á emparentar con los pueblos de estas abominaciones? ¿No te ensañarías contra nosotros hasta consumirnos, sin que quedara resto ni escapatoria?

shall we again break your commandments, and join in affinity with the peoples that do these abominations? Wouldn’t you be angry with us until you had consumed us, so that there would be no remnant, nor any to escape?

Jehová, Dios de Israel, tú eres justo: pues que hemos quedado algunos salvos, como este día, henos aquí delante de ti en nuestros delitos; porque no es posible subsistir en tu presencia á causa de esto.

Yahweh, the God of Israel, you are righteous; for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guiltiness; for no one can stand before you because of this.”

Capítulo 10

Y ORANDO Esdras y confesando, llorando y postrándose delante de la casa de Dios, juntóse á él una muy grande multitud de Israel, hombres y mujeres y niños; y lloraba el pueblo con gran llanto.

Now while Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before God’s house, there was gathered together to him out of Israel a very great assembly of men and women and children; for the people wept very bitterly.

Entonces respondió Sechânías hijo de Jehiel, de los hijos de Elam, y dijo á Esdras: Nosotros hemos prevaricado contra nuestro Dios, pues tomamos mujeres extranjeras de los pueblos de la tierra: mas hay aún esperanza para Israel sobre esto.

Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered Ezra, “We have trespassed against our God, and have married foreign women of the peoples of the land. Yet now there is hope for Israel concerning this thing.

Ahora pues hagamos pacto con nuestro Dios, que echaremos todas las mujeres y los nacidos de ellas, según el consejo del Señor, y de los que temen el mandamiento de nuestro Dios: y hágase conforme á la ley.

Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and those who as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God. Let it be done according to the law.

Levántate, porque á ti toca el negocio, y nosotros seremos contigo; esfuérzate, y ponlo por obra.

Arise; for the matter belongs to you, and we are with you. Be courageous, and do it.”

Entonces se levantó Esdras, y juramentó á los príncipes de los sacerdotes y de los Levitas, y á todo Israel, que harían conforme á esto; y ellos juraron.

Then Ezra arose, and made the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. So they swore.

Levantóse luego Esdras de delante la casa de Dios, y fuése á la cámara de Johanán hijo de Eliasib: é ido allá, no comió pan ni bebió agua, porque se entristeció sobre la prevaricación de los de la transmigración.

Then Ezra rose up from before God’s house, and went into the room of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib. When he came there, he ate no bread, nor drank water; for he mourned because of their trespass of the captivity.

E hicieron pasar pregón por Judá y por Jerusalem á todos los hijos de la transmigración, que se juntasen en Jerusalem:

They made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together to Jerusalem;

Y que el que no viniera dentro de tres días, conforme al acuerdo de los príncipes y de los ancianos, perdiese toda su hacienda, y él fuese apartado de la compañía de los de la transmigración.

and that whoever didn’t come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his possessions should be forfeited, and himself separated from the assembly of the captivity.

Así todos los hombres de Judá y de Benjamín se reunieron en Jerusalem dentro de tres días, á los veinte del mes, el cual era el mes noveno; y sentóse todo el pueblo en la plaza de la casa de Dios, temblando con motivo de aquel negocio, y á causa de las lluvias.

Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together to Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the wide place in front of God’s house, trembling because of this matter, and because of the great rain.

Y levantóse Esdras el sacerdote, y díjoles: Vosotros habéis prevaricado, por cuanto tomasteis mujeres extrañas, añadiendo así sobre el pecado de Israel.

Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have trespassed, and have married foreign women, to increase the guilt of Israel.

Ahora pues, dad gloria á Jehová Dios de vuestros padres, y haced su voluntad, y apartaos de los pueblos de las tierras, y de las mujeres extranjeras.

Now therefore make confession to Yahweh, the God of your fathers, and do his pleasure; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign women.”

Y respondió todo aquel concurso, y dijeron en alta voz: Así se haga conforme á tu palabra.

Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, “As you have said concerning us, so must we do.

Mas el pueblo es mucho, y el tiempo lluvioso, y no hay fuerza para estar en la calle: ni la obra es de un día ni de dos, porque somos muchos los que hemos prevaricado en este negocio.

But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand outside. This is not a work of one day or two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.

Estén ahora nuestros príncipes, los de toda la congregación; y todos aquellos que en nuestras ciudades hubieren tomado mujeres extranjeras, vengan á tiempos aplazados, y con ellos los ancianos de cada ciudad, y los jueces de ellas, hasta que apartemos de nosotros el furor de la ira de nuestro Dios sobre esto.

Now let our princes be appointed for all the assembly, and let all those who are in our cities who have married foreign women come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and its judges, until the fierce wrath of our God is turned from us, until this matter is resolved.”

Fueron pues puestos sobre este negocio Jonathán hijo de Asael, y Jaazías hijo de Tikvah; y Mesullam y Sabethai, Levitas, les ayudaron.

Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah stood up against this; and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.

E hicieron así los hijos de la transmigración. Y apartados que fueron luego Esdras sacerdote, y los varones cabezas de familias en la casa de sus padres, todos ellos por sus nombres, sentáronse el primer día del mes décimo para inquirir el negocio.

The children of the captivity did so. Ezra the priest, with certain heads of fathers’ households, after their fathers’ houses, and all of them by their names, were set apart; and they sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

Y concluyeron, con todos aquellos que habían tomado mujeres extranjeras, al primer día del mes primero.

They finished with all the men who had married foreign women by the first day of the first month.

Y de los hijos de los sacerdotes que habían tomado mujeres extranjeras, fueron hallados estos: De los hijos de Jesuá hijo de Josadec, y de sus hermanos: Maasías, y Eliezer, y Jarib, y Gedalías;

Among the sons of the priests there were found who had married foreign women: of the sons of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and his brothers, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.

Y dieron su mano en promesa de echar sus mujeres, y ofrecieron como culpados un carnero de los rebaños por su delito.

They gave their hand that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their guilt.

Y de los hijos de Immer: Hanani y Zebadías.

Of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah.

Y de los hijos de Harím: Maasías, y Elías, y Semeías, y Jehiel, y Uzzías.

Of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.

Y de los hijos de Phasur: Elioenai, Maasías, Ismael, Nathanael, Jozabad, y Elasa.

Of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

Y de los hijos de los Levitas: Jozabad, y Simi, Kelaía (este es Kelita), Pethaía, Judá y Eliezer.

Of the Levites: Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah (also called Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

Y de los cantores, Eliasib; y de los porteros: Sellum, y Telem, y Uri.

Of the singers: Eliashib. Of the gatekeepers: Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.

Asimismo de Israel: De los hijos de Pharos: Ramía é Izzías, y Malchías, y Miamim, y Eleazar, y Malchías, y Benaías.

Of Israel: Of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, and Izziah, and Malchijah, and Mijamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

Y de los hijos de Elam: Mathanías, Zachârías, y Jehiel, y Abdi, y Jeremoth, y Elía.

Of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah.
