Geophysical Journal International 181: 1–80. The MORVEL model of the geologically current motions of 25 tectonic plates, built from seafloor-spreading rates averaged over 0.78–3.16 million years and fault azimuths, and compared with decadal GPS station velocities: the two agree to within a few millimetres per year for most plate pairs (Pacific–North America differ by only 2.6 ± 1.7 mm/yr). The standard reference that present-day drift is the same motion the ocean floor records over the past few million years, not a decaying tail.
