Rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem and renewing the covenant

The second half of the post-exilic Ezra–Nehemiah narrative. Nehemiah, cupbearer to the Persian king, returns to Jerusalem to rebuild its walls and to reform community practice alongside Ezra.

Kapitel 1

Geschichte Nehemias, des Sohnes Hakaljas. Und es geschah im Monat Kislew des zwanzigsten Jahres, als ich in der Burg Susan war,

The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,

da kam Hanani, einer von meinen Brüdern, er und einige Männer aus Juda. Und ich fragte sie nach den Juden, den Entronnenen, die von der Gefangenschaft übriggeblieben waren, und nach Jerusalem.

Hanani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men out of Judah; and I asked them about the Jews who had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

Und sie sprachen zu mir: Die Übriggebliebenen, die von der Gefangenschaft dort in der Landschaft übriggeblieben sind, sind in großem Unglück und in Schmach; und die Mauer von Jerusalem ist niedergerissen, und seine Tore sind mit Feuer verbrannt.

They said to me, “The remnant who are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.”

Und es geschah, als ich diese Worte hörte, setzte ich mich hin und weinte und trug Leid tagelang; und ich fastete und betete vor dem Gott des Himmels und sprach:

When I heard these words, I sat down and wept, and mourned several days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven,

Ach, Jehova, Gott des Himmels, du, der große und furchtbare Gott, der den Bund und die Güte denen bewahrt, die ihn lieben und seine Gebote halten:

and said, “I beg you, Yahweh, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments:

laß doch dein Ohr aufmerksam und deine Augen offen sein, daß du hörest auf das Gebet deines Knechtes, welches ich heute, Tag und Nacht, für die Kinder Israel, deine Knechte, vor dir bete, und wie ich die Sünden der Kinder Israel bekenne, die wir gegen dich begangen haben! Auch wir, ich und meines Vaters Haus, haben gesündigt.

Let your ear now be attentive, and your eyes open, that you may listen to the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you at this time, day and night, for the children of Israel your servants, while I confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Yes, I and my father’s house have sinned.

Wir haben sehr verderbt gegen dich gehandelt und haben nicht beobachtet die Gebote und die Satzungen und die Rechte, welche du deinem Knechte Mose geboten hast.

We have dealt very corruptly against you, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances, which you commanded your servant Moses.

Gedenke doch des Wortes, das du deinem Knechte Mose geboten hast, indem du sprachst: Werdet ihr treulos handeln, so werde ich euch unter die Völker zerstreuen;

“Remember, I beg you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you trespass, I will scatter you among the peoples;

wenn ihr aber zu mir umkehret und meine Gebote beobachtet und sie tut: sollten eure Vertriebenen am Ende des Himmels sein, so würde ich sie von dannen sammeln und sie an den Ort bringen, den ich erwählt habe, um meinen Namen daselbst wohnen zu lassen!

but if you return to me, and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts were in the uttermost part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and will bring them to the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there.’

Sie sind ja deine Knechte und dein Volk, das du erlöst hast durch deine große Kraft und deine starke Hand.

“Now these are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power, and by your strong hand.

Ach, Herr, laß doch dein Ohr aufmerksam sein auf das Gebet deines Knechtes und auf das Gebet deiner Knechte, die Gefallen daran finden, deinen Namen zu fürchten; und laß es doch deinem Knechte heute gelingen und gewähre ihm Barmherzigkeit vor diesem Manne! - Ich war nämlich Mundschenk des Königs.

Lord, I beg you, let your ear be attentive now to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who delight to fear your name; and please prosper your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” Now I was cup bearer to the king.

Kapitel 2

Und es geschah im Monat Nisan, im zwanzigsten Jahre des Königs Artasasta, als Wein vor ihm war, da nahm ich den Wein und gab ihn dem König; ich war aber nie traurig vor ihm gewesen.

In the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, I picked up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad before in his presence.

Und der König sprach zu mir: Warum ist dein Angesicht traurig? und doch bist du nicht krank; es ist nichts anderes als Traurigkeit des Herzens. Da fürchtete ich mich gar sehr.

The king said to me, “Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart.” Then I was very much afraid.

Und ich sprach zu dem König: Der König lebe ewiglich! Warum sollte mein Angesicht nicht traurig sein, da die Stadt, die Begräbnisstätte meiner Väter, wüst liegt, und ihre Tore vom Feuer verzehrt sind?

I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why shouldn’t my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?”

Und der König sprach zu mir: Um was bittest du denn? Da betete ich zu dem Gott des Himmels;

Then the king said to me, “What is your request?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.

und ich sprach zu dem König: Wenn es den König gut dünkt, und wenn dein Knecht wohlgefällig vor dir ist, so bitte ich, daß du mich nach Juda sendest zu der Stadt der Begräbnisse meiner Väter, damit ich sie wieder aufbaue.

I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you would send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may build it.”

Da sprach der König zu mir - und die Königin saß neben ihm: Wie lange wird deine Reise währen, und wann wirst du zurückkehren? Und es gefiel dem König, mich zu senden; und ich bestimmte ihm eine Zeit.

The king said to me (the queen was also sitting by him), “How long will your journey be? When will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me, and I set a time for him.

Und ich sprach zu dem König: Wenn es den König gut dünkt, so gebe man mir Briefe an die Landpfleger jenseit des Stromes, daß sie mich durchziehen lassen, bis ich nach Juda komme;

Moreover I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;

und einen Brief an Asaph, den Hüter des königlichen Forstes, daß er mir Holz gebe, um die Tore der Burg zu bälken, welche zum Hause gehört, und für die Mauer der Stadt, und für das Haus, in welches ich ziehen werde. Und der König gab es mir, weil die gute Hand meines Gottes über mir war.

and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I will occupy.” The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.

Und ich kam zu den Landpflegern jenseit des Stromes und gab ihnen die Briefe des Königs. Der König hatte aber Heeroberste und Reiter mit mir gesandt.

Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.

Und als Sanballat, der Horoniter, und Tobija, der ammonitische Knecht, es hörten, verdroß es sie gar sehr, daß ein Mensch gekommen war, um das Wohl der Kinder Israel zu suchen.

When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, because a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

Und ich kam nach Jerusalem und war daselbst drei Tage.

So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

Und ich machte mich des Nachts auf, ich und wenige Männer mit mir; ich hatte aber keinem Menschen kundgetan, was mein Gott mir ins Herz gegeben, für Jerusalem zu tun; und kein Tier war bei mir, außer dem Tiere, auf welchem ich ritt.

I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. I didn’t tell anyone what my God put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There wasn’t any animal with me, except the animal that I rode on.

Und ich zog des Nachts durch das Taltor hinaus, und gegen die Drachenquelle hin, und nach dem Misttore; und ich besichtigte die Mauern von Jerusalem, welche niedergerissen, und ihre Tore, die vom Feuer verzehrt waren.

I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the jackal’s well, then to the dung gate, and inspected the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates were consumed with fire.

Und ich zog hinüber zum Quellentore und zum Königsteiche, und es war kein Raum zum Durchkommen für das Tier, welches unter mir war.

Then I went on to the spring gate and to the king’s pool, but there was no place for the animal that was under me to pass.

Und ich zog des Nachts das Tal hinauf und besichtigte die Mauer; und ich kam wieder durch das Taltor herein und kehrte zurück.

Then went I up in the night by the brook, and inspected the wall; and I turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned.

Die Vorsteher wußten aber nicht, wohin ich gegangen war und was ich tat; denn ich hatte den Juden und den Priestern und den Edlen und den Vorstehern und den Übrigen, die das Werk taten, bis dahin nichts kundgetan.

The rulers didn’t know where I went, or what I did. I had not as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest who did the work.

Und ich sprach zu ihnen: Ihr sehet das Unglück, in welchem wir sind, daß Jerusalem wüst liegt und seine Tore mit Feuer verbrannt sind. Kommt und laßt uns die Mauer Jerusalems wieder aufbauen, daß wir nicht länger zum Hohne seien!

Then I said to them, “You see the bad situation that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won’t be disgraced.”

Und ich tat ihnen kund, daß die Hand meines Gottes gütig über mir gewesen war, und auch die Worte des Königs, die er zu mir geredet hatte. Da sprachen sie: Wir wollen uns aufmachen und bauen! Und sie stärkten ihre Hände zum Guten.

I told them of the hand of my God which was good on me, as also of the king’s words that he had spoken to me. They said, “Let’s rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work.

Als aber Sanballat, der Horoniter, und Tobija, der ammonitische Knecht, und Geschem, der Araber, es hörten, spotteten sie über uns und verachteten uns und sprachen: Was ist das für eine Sache, die ihr tun wollt? Wollt ihr euch wider den König empören?

But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammontite servant, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they ridiculed us, and despised us, and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?”

Und ich gab ihnen Antwort und sprach zu ihnen: Der Gott des Himmels, er wird es uns gelingen lassen; und wir, seine Knechte, wollen uns aufmachen und bauen. Ihr aber habt weder Teil noch Recht, noch Gedächtnis in Jerusalem.

Then I answered them, and said to them, “The God of heaven will prosper us. Therefore we, his servants, will arise and build; but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.”

Kapitel 3

Und Eljaschib, der Hohepriester, und seine Brüder, die Priester, machten sich auf und bauten das Schaftor; sie heiligten es und setzten seine Flügel ein. Und sie heiligten es bis an den Turm Mea, bis an den Turm Hananel.

Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the sheep gate. They sanctified it, and set up its doors. They sanctified it even to the tower of Hammeah, to the tower of Hananel.

Und ihm zur Seite bauten die Männer von Jericho. Und ihnen zur Seite baute Sakkur, der Sohn Imris.

Next to him the men of Jericho built. Next to them Zaccur the son of Imri built.

Und das Fischtor bauten die Söhne Senaas; sie bälkten es und setzten seine Flügel, seine Klammern und seine Riegel ein.

The sons of Hassenaah built the fish gate. They laid its beams, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.

Und ihnen zur Seite besserte aus Meremoth, der Sohn Urijas, des Sohnes Hakkoz'. Und ihm zur Seite besserte aus Meschullam, der Sohn Berekja, des Sohnes Meschesabeels. Und ihm zur Seite besserte aus Zadok, der Sohn Baanas.

Next to them, Meremoth the son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz made repairs. Next to them, Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabel made repairs. Next to them, Zadok the son of Baana made repairs.

Und ihm zur Seite besserten die Tekoiter aus; aber die Vornehmen unter ihnen beugten ihren Nacken nicht unter den Dienst ihres Herrn.

Next to them, the Tekoites made repairs; but their nobles didn’t put their necks to the Lord’s work.

Und das Tor der alten Mauer besserten aus Jojada, der Sohn Paseachs, und Meschullam, der Sohn Besodjas; sie bälkten es und setzten seine Flügel, seine Klammern und seine Riegel ein.

Joiada the son of Paseah and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah repaired the old gate. They laid its beams, and set up its doors, and its bolts, and its bars.

Und ihnen zur Seite besserten aus Melatja, der Gibeoniter, und Jadon, der Meronothiter, Männer von Gibeon und Mizpa, gegen den Gerichtsstuhl des Landpflegers diesseit des Stromes hin.

Next to them, Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah, repaired the residence of the governor beyond the River.

Ihnen zur Seite besserte aus Ussiel, der Sohn Harchajas, welche Goldschmiede waren. Und ihm zur Seite besserte aus Hananja, von den Salbenmischern. Und sie ließen Jerusalem bis an die breite Mauer, wie es war.

Next to him, Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, goldsmiths, made repairs. Next to him, Hananiah, one of the perfumers, made repairs, and they fortified Jerusalem even to the wide wall.

Und ihm zur Seite besserte aus Rephaja, der Sohn Hurs, der Oberste des halben Bezirks von Jerusalem.

Next to them, Rephaiah the son of Hur, the ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs.

Und ihm zur Seite besserte aus Jedaja, der Sohn Harumaphs, und zwar seinem Hause gegenüber. Und ihm zur Seite besserte aus Hattusch, der Sohn Haschabnejas.

Next to them, Jedaiah the son of Harumaph made repairs across from his house. Next to him, Hattush the son of Hashabneiah made repairs.

Malkija, der Sohn Harims, und Haschub, der Sohn Pachath-Moabs, besserten eine andere Strecke aus und den Ofenturm.

Malchijah the son of Harim, and Hasshub the son of Pahathmoab, repaired another portion, and the tower of the furnaces.

Und ihnen zur Seite besserte aus Schallum, der Sohn Hallochesch', der Oberste des anderen halben Bezirks von Jerusalem, er und seine Töchter.

Next to him, Shallum the son of Hallohesh, the ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, he and his daughters, made repairs.

Das Taltor besserten aus Hanun und die Bewohner von Sanoach; sie bauten es und setzten seine Flügel, seine Klammern und seine Riegel ein, und bauten tausend Ellen an der Mauer bis zum Misttore.

Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the valley gate. They built it, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, and one thousand cubits of the wall to the dung gate.

Und das Misttor besserte aus Malkija, der Sohn Rekabs, der Oberste des Bezirks von Beth-Kerem; er baute es und setzte seine Flügel, seine Klammern und seine Riegel ein.

Malchijah the son of Rechab, the ruler of the district of Beth Haccherem repaired the dung gate. He built it, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.

Und das Quelltor besserte aus Schallun, der Sohn Kol-Hoses, der Oberste des Bezirks von Mizpa; er baute es und überdachte es und setzte seine Flügel, seine Klammern und seine Riegel ein; und er baute die Mauer am Teiche Siloah bei dem Garten des Königs und bis zu den Stufen, welche von der Stadt Davids hinabgehen.

Shallun the son of Colhozeh, the ruler of the district of Mizpah repaired the spring gate. He built it, and covered it, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, and the wall of the pool of Shelah by the king’s garden, even to the stairs that go down from David’s city.

Nächst ihm besserte aus Nehemia, der Sohn Asbuks, der Oberste des halben Bezirks von Beth-Zur, bis gegenüber den Gräbern Davids und bis zu dem Teiche, der angelegt worden war, und bis zu dem Hause der Helden.

After him, Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, the ruler of half the district of Beth Zur, made repairs to the place opposite the tombs of David, and to the pool that was made, and to the house of the mighty men.

Nächst ihm besserten aus die Leviten, Rechum, der Sohn Banis. Ihm zur Seite besserte aus Haschabja, der Oberste des halben Bezirks von Kehila, für seinen Bezirk.

After him, the Levites, Rehum the son of Bani made repairs. Next to him, Hashabiah, the ruler of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his district.

Nächst ihm besserten aus ihre Brüder, Bawai, der Sohn Henadads, der Oberste des anderen halben Bezirks von Kehila.

After him, their brothers, Bavvai the son of Henadad, the ruler of half the district of Keilah made repairs.

Und ihm zur Seite besserte Eser, der Sohn Jeschuas, der Oberste von Mizpa, eine andere Strecke aus, gegenüber dem Aufgang zum Zeughause des Winkels.

Next to him, Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, repaired another portion, across from the ascent to the armory at the turning of the wall.

Nächst ihm besserte Baruk, der Sohn Sabbais, eine andere Strecke eifrig aus, vom Winkel bis zum Eingang des Hauses Eljaschibs, des Hohenpriesters.

After him, Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired another portion, from the turning of the wall to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.

Nächst ihm besserte Meremoth, der Sohn Urijas, des Sohnes Hakkoz', eine andere Strecke aus, vom Eingang des Hauses Eljaschibs bis zum Ende des Hauses Eljaschibs.

After him, Meremoth the son of Uriah the son of Hakkoz repaired another portion, from the door of the house of Eliashib even to the end of the house of Eliashib.

Und nächst ihm besserten aus die Priester, die Männer des Jordankreises.

After him, the priests, the men of the Plain made repairs.

Nächst ihnen besserten aus Benjamin und Haschub, ihrem Hause gegenüber. Nächst ihnen besserte aus Asarja, der Sohn Maasejas, des Sohnes Ananjas, neben seinem Hause.

After them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs across from their house. After them, Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah made repairs beside his own house.

Nächst ihm besserte Binnui, der Sohn Henadads, eine andere Strecke aus, vom Hause Asarjas bis an den Winkel und bis an die Ecke.

After him, Binnui the son of Henadad repaired another portion, from the house of Azariah to the turning of the wall, and to the corner.

Palal, der Sohn Usais, besserte aus gegenüber dem Winkel und dem hohen Turme, welcher an dem Hause des Königs vorspringt, der bei dem Gefängnishofe ist. Nächst ihm Pedaja, der Sohn Parhosch'. -

Palal the son of Uzai made repairs opposite the turning of the wall, and the tower that stands out from the upper house of the king, which is by the court of the guard. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh made repairs.

Und die Nethinim wohnten auf dem Ophel bis gegenüber dem Wassertore nach Osten und dem vorspringenden Turme. -

(Now the temple servants lived in Ophel, to the place over against the water gate toward the east, and the tower that stands out.)

Nächst ihm besserten die Tekoiter eine andere Strecke aus, dem großen vorspringenden Turme gegenüber und bis zur Mauer des Ophel.

After him the Tekoites repaired another portion, over against the great tower that stands out, and to the wall of Ophel.

Oberhalb des Roßtores besserten die Priester aus, ein jeder seinem Hause gegenüber.

Above the horse gate, the priests made repairs, everyone across from his own house.

Nächst ihnen besserte aus Zadok, der Sohn Immers, seinem Hause gegenüber. Und nächst ihm besserte aus Schemaja, der Sohn Schekanjas, der Hüter des Osttores.

After them, Zadok the son of Immer made repairs across from his own house. After him, Shemaiah the son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the east gate made repairs.

Nächst ihm besserten Hananja, der Sohn Schelemjas, und Hanun, der sechste Sohn Zalaphs, eine andere Strecke aus. Nächst ihm besserte aus Meschullam, der Sohn Berekjas, seiner Zelle gegenüber.

After him, Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another portion. After him, Meshullam the son of Berechiah made repairs across from his room.

Nächst ihm besserte aus Malkija, von den Goldschmieden, bis an das Haus der Nethinim und der Krämer, dem Tore Miphkad gegenüber und bis an das Obergemach der Ecke.

After him, Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths to the house of the temple servants, and of the merchants, made repairs opposite the gate of Hammiphkad, and to the ascent of the corner.

Und zwischen dem Obergemach der Ecke und dem Schaftore besserten die Goldschmiede und die Krämer aus.

Between the ascent of the corner and the sheep gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.

Kapitel 4

Und es geschah, als Sanballat hörte, daß wir die Mauer bauten, da wurde er zornig und ärgerte sich sehr. Und er spottete über die Juden

But when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and was very indignant, and mocked the Jews.

und sprach vor seinen Brüdern und dem Heere von Samaria und sagte: Was machen die ohnmächtigen Juden? Wird man es ihnen zulassen? Werden sie opfern? Werden sie es an diesem Tage vollenden? Werden sie die Steine aus den Schutthaufen wieder beleben, da sie doch verbrannt sind?

He spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria, and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, since they are burned?”

Und Tobija, der Ammoniter, stand neben ihm und sprach: Was sie auch bauen; wenn ein Fuchs hinaufstiege, so würde er ihre steinerne Mauer auseinander reißen! -

Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, “What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall.”

Höre, unser Gott, denn wir sind zur Verachtung geworden; und bringe ihren Hohn auf ihren Kopf zurück, und gib sie dem Raube hin in einem Lande der Gefangenschaft!

“Hear, our God; for we are despised; and turn back their reproach on their own head, give them up for a plunder in a land of captivity;

Und decke ihre Ungerechtigkeit nicht zu, und ihre Sünde werde nicht ausgelöscht vor deinem Angesicht! Denn sie haben dich gereizt angesichts der Bauenden. -

don’t cover their iniquity, and don’t let their sin be blotted out from before you; for they have insulted the builders.”

Aber wir bauten weiter an der Mauer; und die ganze Mauer wurde bis zur Hälfte geschlossen, und das Volk hatte Mut zur Arbeit.

So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to half its height: for the people had a mind to work.

Und es geschah, als Sanballat und Tobija und die Araber und die Ammoniter und die Asdoditer hörten, daß die Herstellung der Mauern Jerusalems zunahm, daß die Risse sich zu schließen begannen, da wurden sie sehr zornig.

But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be filled, they were very angry;

Und sie verschworen sich alle miteinander, zu kommen, um wider Jerusalem zu streiten und Schaden darin anzurichten.

and they all conspired together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion among us.

Da beteten wir zu unserem Gott und stellten aus Furcht vor ihnen Tag und Nacht Wachen gegen sie auf.

But we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

Und Juda sprach: Die Kraft der Lastträger sinkt, und des Schuttes ist viel, und so vermögen wir nicht mehr an der Mauer zu bauen.

Judah said, “The strength of the bearers of burdens is fading, and there is much rubble; so that we are not able to build the wall.”

Unsere Widersacher aber sprachen: Sie sollen es nicht wissen, noch sollen sie es sehen, bis wir mitten unter sie kommen und sie erschlagen und dem Werke Einhalt tun.

Our adversaries said, “They will not know or see, until we come in among them and kill them, and cause the work to cease.”

Und es geschah, als die Juden, welche neben ihnen wohnten, kamen und uns wohl zehnmal sagten, aus allen Orten her: Kehret zu uns zurück!

When the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times from all places, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”

da stellte ich an niedrigen Stellen des Raumes hinter der Mauer an nackten Plätzen, - da stellte ich das Volk auf nach den Geschlechtern, mit ihren Schwertern, ihren Lanzen und ihren Bogen.

Therefore I set guards in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places. I set the people by family groups with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

Und ich sah zu und machte mich auf und sprach zu den Edlen und zu den Vorstehern und zu dem übrigen Volke: Fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen! Gedenket des Herrn, des großen und furchtbaren, und streitet für eure Brüder, eure Söhne und eure Töchter, eure Weiber und eure Häuser!

I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them! Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”

Und es geschah, als unsere Feinde hörten, daß es uns kundgeworden war, und daß Gott ihren Rat vereitelt hatte, da kehrten wir alle zur Mauer zurück, ein jeder an sein Werk.

When our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, all of us returned to the wall, everyone to his work.

Und es geschah von jenem Tage an, daß die Hälfte meiner Diener an dem Werke arbeitete, während die andere Hälfte die Lanzen und die Schilde und die Bogen und die Panzer hielt; und die Obersten waren hinter dem ganzen Hause Juda,

From that time forth, half of my servants did the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

welches an der Mauer baute.Und die Lastträger luden auf, mit der einen Hand am Werke arbeitend, während die andere die Waffe hielt.

Those who built the wall, and those who bore burdens loaded themselves; everyone with one of his hands did the work, and with the other held his weapon.

Und die Bauenden hatten ein jeder sein Schwert um seine Lenden gegürtet und bauten. Und der in die Posaune stieß, war neben mir. -

Among the builders, everyone wore his sword at his side, and so built. He who sounded the trumpet was by me.

Und ich sprach zu den Edlen und zu den Vorstehern und zu dem übrigen Volke: Das Werk ist groß und weitläufig, und wir sind auf der Mauer zerstreut, einer von dem anderen entfernt.

I said to the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and large, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another.

An dem Orte, wo ihr den Schall der Posaune hören werdet, dahin versammelt euch zu uns. Unser Gott wird für uns streiten!

Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally there to us. Our God will fight for us.”

So arbeiteten wir an dem Werke, und die Hälfte von ihnen hielt die Lanzen vom Aufgang der Morgenröte an, bis die Sterne hervortraten.

So we did the work. Half of the people held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.

Auch sprach ich in selbiger Zeit zu dem Volke: Ein jeder übernachte mit seinem Diener innerhalb Jerusalems, so daß sie uns des Nachts zur Wache und des Tages zum Werke dienen.

Likewise at the same time said I to the people, “Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day.”

Und weder ich, noch meine Brüder, noch meine Diener, noch die Männer der Wache, die in meinem Gefolge waren, zogen unsere Kleider aus; ein jeder hatte seine Waffe zu seiner Rechten.

So neither I, nor my brothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes. Everyone took his weapon to the water.

Kapitel 5

Und es entstand ein großes Geschrei des Volkes und ihrer Weiber gegen ihre Brüder, die Juden.

Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brothers the Jews.

Und es gab solche, die da sprachen: Unserer Söhne und unserer Töchter, unser sind viele; und wir müssen Getreide erhalten, daß wir essen und leben!

For there were that said, “We, our sons and our daughters, are many. Let us get grain, that we may eat and live.”

Und es gab solche, die da sprachen: Wir mußten unsere Felder und unsere Weinberge und unsere Häuser verpfänden, daß wir Getreide erhielten in der Hungersnot.

There were also some that said, “We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses. Let us get grain, because of the famine.”

Und es gab solche, die da sprachen: Wir haben Geld entlehnt auf unsere Felder und unsere Weinberge für die Steuer des Königs.

There were also some who said, “We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute using our fields and our vineyards as collateral.

Und nun, unser Fleisch ist wie das Fleisch unserer Brüder, unsere Kinder sind wie ihre Kinder; und siehe, wir müssen unsere Söhne und unsere Töchter dem Knechtsdienst unterwerfen; und manche von unseren Töchtern sind schon unterworfen, und es steht nicht in der Macht unserer Hände, sie zu lösen; unsere Felder und unsere Weinberge gehören ja anderen.

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children as their children. Behold, we bring our sons and our daughters into bondage to be servants, and some of our daughters have been brought into bondage. It is also not in our power to help it, because other men have our fields and our vineyards.”

Und als ich ihr Geschrei und diese Worte hörte, wurde ich sehr zornig.

I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

Und mein Herz pflegte Rats in mir, und ich haderte mit den Edlen und mit den Vorstehern und sprach zu ihnen: Auf Wucher leihet ihr, ein jeder seinem Bruder! Und ich veranstaltete eine große Versammlung gegen sie;

Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them, “You exact usury, everyone of his brother.” I held a great assembly against them.

und ich sprach zu ihnen: Wir haben unsere Brüder, die Juden, welche den Nationen verkauft waren, soweit es uns möglich war, losgekauft; und ihr wollt gar eure Brüder verkaufen? Und sie sollen sich uns verkaufen? Da schwiegen sie und fanden keine Antwort.

I said to them, “We, after our ability, have redeemed our brothers the Jews that were sold to the nations; and would you even sell your brothers, and should they be sold to us?” Then they held their peace, and found not a word to say.

Und ich sprach: Nicht gut ist die Sache, die ihr tut! Solltet ihr nicht in der Furcht unseres Gottes wandeln, daß wir nicht den Nationen, unseren Feinden, zum Hohne seien?

Also I said, “The thing that you do is not good. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?

Aber auch ich, meine Brüder und meine Diener, wir haben ihnen Geld und Getreide auf Zins geliehen. Laßt uns doch diesen Zins erlassen!

I likewise, my brothers and my servants, lend them money and grain. Please let us stop this usury.

Gebet ihnen doch gleich heute ihre Felder, ihre Weinberge, ihre Olivengärten und ihre Häuser zurück; und erlaßt ihnen den Hundertsten von dem Gelde und dem Getreide, dem Moste und dem Öle, welches ihr ihnen auf Zins geliehen habt.

Please restore to them, even today, their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that you are charging them.”

Da sprachen sie: Wir wollen es zurückgeben und nichts von ihnen fordern; wir wollen also tun, wie du sagst. Und ich rief die Priester und ließ sie schwören, nach diesem Worte zu tun.

Then they said, “We will restore them, and will require nothing of them. We will do so, even as you say.” Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise.

Auch schüttelte ich meinen Busen aus und sprach: So möge Gott jedermann, der dieses Wort nicht aufrecht halten wird, aus seinem Hause und aus seinem Erwerbe schütteln; und so sei er ausgeschüttelt und ausgeleert! Und die ganze Versammlung sprach: Amen! Und sie lobten Jehova. Und das Volk tat nach diesem Worte.

Also I shook out my lap, and said, “So may God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that doesn’t perform this promise; even be he shaken out, and emptied like this.” All the assembly said, “Amen,” and praised Yahweh. The people did according to this promise.

Auch von dem Tage an, da er mich bestellt hatte, um ihr Landpfleger zu sein im Lande Juda, vom 20 Jahre bis zum 32 Jahre des Königs Artasasta, zwölf Jahre lang, habe ich mit meinen Brüdern die Speise des Landpflegers nicht gegessen.

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brothers have not eaten the bread of the governor.

Aber die früheren Landpfleger, die vor mir gewesen waren, hatten das Volk beschwert und Brot und Wein von ihnen genommen, nebst vierzig Sekel Silber; auch ihre Diener schalteten willkürlich über das Volk. Ich aber tat nicht also, aus Furcht vor Gott.

But the former governors who were before me were supported by the people, and took bread and wine from them, plus forty shekels of silver; yes, even their servants ruled over the people; but I didn’t do so, because of the fear of God.

Und auch an dem Werke dieser Mauer griff ich mit an; und wir kauften kein Feld; und alle meine Diener waren daselbst zum Werke versammelt.

Yes, I also continued in the work of this wall. We didn’t buy any land. All my servants were gathered there to the work.

Und die Juden, sowohl die Vorsteher, 150 Mann, als auch die, welche aus den Nationen, die ringsumher wohnten, zu uns kamen, waren an meinem Tische.

Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, one hundred fifty men, besides those who came to us from among the nations that were around us.

Und was für einen Tag zubereitet wurde: ein Rind, sechs ausgewählte Schafe und Geflügel wurden mir zubereitet; und alle zehn Tage an allerlei Wein die Fülle; und trotzdem forderte ich nicht die Speise des Landpflegers, denn der Dienst lastete schwer auf diesem Volke.

Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep. Also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days a store of all sorts of wine. Yet for all this, I didn’t demand the governor’s pay, because the bondage was heavy on this people.

Gedenke mir, mein Gott, zum Guten, alles, was ich für dieses Volk getan habe!

Remember to me, my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.

Kapitel 6

Und es geschah, als Sanballat und Tobija und Geschem, der Araber, und unsere übrigen Feinde vernahmen, daß ich die Mauer gebaut hätte und daß kein Riß mehr darin wäre, - doch hatte ich bis zu jener Zeit die Flügel noch nicht in die Tore eingesetzt -

Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates)

da sandten Sanballat und Geschem zu mir und ließen mir sagen: Komm und laß uns in einem der Dörfer im Tale von Ono miteinander zusammentreffen! Sie gedachten aber, mir Böses zu tun.

Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.

Und ich sandte Boten zu ihnen und ließ ihnen sagen: Ich führe ein großes Werk aus und kann nicht hinabkommen. Warum sollte das Werk ruhen, wenn ich es ließe und zu euch hinabkäme?

I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I can’t come down. Why should the work cease, while I leave it, and come down to you?”

Und sie sandten auf diese Weise viermal zu mir, und ich erwiderte ihnen auf diesselbe Weise.

They sent to me four times like this; and I answered them the same way.

Da sandte Sanballat auf diese Weise zum fünften Male seinen Diener zu mir mit einem offenen Briefe in seiner Hand.

Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,

Darin stand geschrieben: Unter den Nationen verlautet, und Gaschmu sagt es, daß ihr, du und die Juden, euch zu empören gedenket; darum bauest du die Mauer; und du wollest, nach diesem Gerücht, ihr König werden;

in which was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words.

auch habest du Propheten bestellt, damit sie in Jerusalem über dich ausrufen und sagen: Es ist ein König in Juda! Und nun wird der König diese Gerüchte vernehmen. So komm nun, daß wir uns zusammen beraten.

You have also appointed prophets to proclaim of you at Jerusalem, saying, ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.”

Da sandte ich zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Es ist nicht geschehen nach diesen Worten, die du sprichst; sondern aus deinem eigenen Herzen erdichtest du sie.

Then I sent to him, saying, “There are no such things done as you say, but you imagine them out of your own heart.”

Denn sie alle wollten uns in Furcht setzen, indem sie sprachen: Ihre Hände werden von dem Werke ablassen, und es wird nicht ausgeführt werden. - Und nun, stärke meine Hände!

For they all would have made us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done.” But now, strengthen my hands.

Und ich kam in das Haus Schemajas, des Sohnes Delajas, des Sohnes Mehetabeels, der sich eingeschlossen hatte. Und er sprach: Laß uns im Hause Gottes, im Innern des Tempels, zusammenkommen und die Türen des Tempels verschließen; denn sie werden kommen, dich zu ermorden; und zwar werden sie bei der Nacht kommen, dich zu ermorden.

I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you. Yes, in the night will they come to kill you.”

Aber ich sprach: Ein Mann wie ich sollte fliehen? und wie könnte einer, wie ich bin, in den Tempel hineingehen und am Leben bleiben? Ich will nicht hineingehen!

I said, “Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”

Und ich merkte, daß nicht Gott ihn gesandt hatte; sondern er sprach diese Weissagung wider mich, und Tobija und Sanballat hatten ihn gedungen.

I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

Darum war er gedungen, damit ich mich fürchten und also tun und mich versündigen sollte, und damit sie ein böses Gerücht hätten, auf daß sie mich verlästern könnten. -

He hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

Gedenke es, mein Gott, dem Tobija und dem Sanballat nach diesen ihren Werken, und auch der Prophetin Noadja und den übrigen Propheten, die mich in Furcht setzen wollten!

“Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.”

Und die Mauer wurde vollendet am 25. des Elul, in 52 Tagen.

So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.

Und es geschah, als alle unsere Feinde es hörten, da fürchteten sich alle Nationen, die rings um uns her waren, und sie sanken sehr in ihren Augen; und sie erkannten, daß dieses Werk von unserem Gott aus geschehen war.

When all our enemies heard of it, all the nations that were around us were afraid, and they lost their confidence; for they perceived that this work was done by our God.

Auch ließen in jenen Tagen Edle von Juda viele Briefe an Tobija abgehen, und solche von Tobija kamen an sie.

Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them.

Denn es gab viele in Juda, die ihm geschworen hatten, denn er war ein Schwiegersohn Schekanjas, des Sohnes Arachs; und sein Sohn Jochanan hatte die Tochter Meschullams, des Sohnes Berekjas, genommen.

For there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as wife.

Auch redeten sie vor mir von seinen guten Taten und hinterbrachten ihm meine Worte; und Tobija sandte Briefe, um mich in Furcht zu setzen.

Also they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.

Kapitel 7

Und es geschah, als die Mauer gebaut war, da setzte ich die Türflügel ein; und die Torhüter und die Sänger und die Leviten wurden bestellt.

Now when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed,

Und ich beorderte über Jerusalem meinen Bruder Hanani und Hananja, den Obersten der Burg; denn er war ein sehr treuer Mann und gottesfürchtig vor vielen.

I put my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the governor of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem; for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.

Und ich sprach zu ihnen: Die Tore Jerusalems sollen nicht eher geöffnet werden, als bis die Sonne heiß scheint; und während sie noch dastehen, soll man die Türflügel zumachen, und verschließet sie. Und ihr sollt Wachen aus den Bewohnern Jerusalems aufstellen, den einen auf seine Wache und den anderen vor sein Haus.

I said to them, “Don’t let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut the doors, and you bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyone in his watch, with everyone near his house.”

Die Stadt aber war geräumig und groß, und das Volk darin spärlich, und keine Häuser waren gebaut.

Now the city was wide and large; but the people were few therein, and the houses were not built.

Und mein Gott gab mir ins Herz, die Edlen und die Vorsteher und das Volk zu versammeln, um sie nach den Geschlechtern zu verzeichnen. Und ich fand das Geschlechtsverzeichnis derer, die zuerst heraufgezogen waren, und fand darin geschrieben:

My God put into my heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be listed by genealogy. I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up at the first, and I found this written in it:

Dies sind die Kinder der Landschaft Juda, welche aus der Gefangenschaft der Weggeführten, die Nebukadnezar, der König von Babel, weggeführt hatte, hinaufzogen, und die nach Jerusalem und Juda zurückkehrten, ein jeder in seine Stadt,

These are the children of the province, who went up out of the captivity of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and who returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, everyone to his city;

These were those who went up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer; but they could not show their fathers’ houses, nor their offspring, whether they were of Israel:

The children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, the children of Nekoda, six hundred forty-two.

Of the priests: the children of Hobaiah, the children of Hakkoz, the children of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name.

Diese suchten ihr Geschlechtsregisterverzeichnis, aber es wurde nicht gefunden; und sie wurden von dem Priestertum als unrein ausgeschlossen.

These searched for their genealogical records, but couldn’t find them. Therefore were they deemed disqualified and removed from the priesthood.

Und der Tirsatha sprach zu ihnen, daß sie von dem Hochheiligen nicht essen dürften, bis ein Priester für die Urim und die Thummim aufstände.

The governor told that they should not eat of the most holy things until a priest stood up to minister with Urim and Thummim.

The whole assembly together was forty-two thousand three hundred sixty,

außer ihren Knechten und ihren Mägden; dieser waren 7337. Und sie hatten 245 Sänger und Sängerinnen.

besides their male servants and their female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven; and they had two hundred forty-five singing men and singing women.

Their horses were seven hundred thirty-six; their mules, two hundred forty-five;

their camels, four hundred thirty-five; their donkeys, six thousand seven hundred twenty.

Und ein Teil der Häupter der Väter gab zum Werke. Der Tirsatha gab für den Schatz: an Gold 1000 Dariken, 50 Sprengschalen, 530 Priesterleibröcke.

Some from among the heads of fathers’ households gave to the work. The governor gave to the treasury one thousand darics of gold, fifty basins, and five hundred thirty priests’ garments.

Und einige von den Häuptern der Väter gaben für den Schatz des Werkes: an Gold 20000 Dariken, und an Silber 2200 Minen.

Some of the heads of fathers’ households gave into the treasury of the work twenty thousand darics of gold, and two thousand two hundred minas of silver.

Und was das übrige Volk gab, war an Gold 20000 Dariken, und an Silber 2000 Minen, und 67 Priesterleibröcke.

That which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand darics of gold, plus two thousand minas of silver, and sixty-seven priests’ garments.

Und die Priester und die Leviten und die Torhüter und die Sänger und die aus dem Volke und die Nethinim und ganz Israel wohnten in ihren Städten.

So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all Israel, lived in their cities. When the seventh month had come, the children of Israel were in their cities.

Kapitel 8

Und als der siebte Monat herankam und die Kinder Israel in ihren Städten waren, da versammelte sich das ganze Volk wie ein Mann auf dem Platze, der vor dem Wassertore liegt. Und sie sprachen zu Esra, dem Schriftgelehrten, daß er das Buch des Gesetzes Moses bringen sollte, welches Jehova Israel geboten hatte.

All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the wide place that was in front of the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.

Und am ersten Tage des siebten Monats brachte Esra, der Priester, das Gesetz vor die Versammlung, sowohl der Männer als der Weiber, und vor alle, die Verständnis hatten, um zuzuhören.

Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.

Und er las darin vor dem Platze, der vor dem Wassertore liegt, vom lichten Morgen bis zum Mittag, in Gegenwart der Männer und der Weiber und derer, die Verständnis hatten; und die Ohren des ganzen Volkes waren auf das Buch des Gesetzes gerichtet.

He read from it before the wide place that was in front of the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand. The ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.

Und Esra, der Schriftgelehrte, stand auf einem Gerüst von Holz, welches man zu diesem Zwecke gemacht hatte. Und neben ihm standen Mattithja und Schema und Anaja und Urija und Hilkija und Maaseja, zu seiner Rechten; und zu seiner Linken Pedaja und Mischael und Malkija und Haschum und Haschbaddana, Sekarja, Meschullam.

Ezra the scribe stood on a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

Und Esra öffnete das Buch vor den Augen des ganzen Volkes, denn er ragte über dem ganzen Volke empor; und als er es öffnete, stand das ganze Volk auf.

Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people (for he was above all the people), and when he opened it, all the people stood up.

Und Esra pries Jehova, den großen Gott, und das ganze Volk antwortete: Amen, Amen! indem sie ihre Hände emporhoben und sich verneigten und vor Jehova niederwarfen, mit dem Antlitz zur Erde.

Then Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God. All the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” with the lifting up of their hands. They bowed their heads, and worshiped Yahweh with their faces to the ground.

Und Jeschua und Bani und Scherebja, Jamin, Akkub, Schabbethai, Hodija, Maaseja, Kelita, Asarja, Josabad, Hanan, Pelaja und die Leviten belehrten das Volk über das Gesetz; und das Volk stand auf seiner Stelle.

Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law; and the people stayed in their place.

Und sie lasen in dem Buche, in dem Gesetz Gottes, deutlich, und gaben den Sinn an, so daß man das Gelesene verstand.

They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.

Und Nehemia, das ist der Tirsatha, und Esra, der Priester, der Schriftgelehrte, und die Leviten, welche das Volk belehrten, sprachen zu dem ganzen Volke: Dieser Tag ist Jehova, eurem Gott, heilig; seid nicht traurig und weinet nicht! (Denn das ganze Volk weinte, als es die Worte des Gesetzes hörte.)

Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people, “Today is holy to Yahweh your God. Don’t mourn, nor weep.” For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law.

Und er sprach zu ihnen: Gehet hin, esset Fettes und trinket Süßes, und sendet Teile denen, für welche nichts zubereitet ist; denn der Tag ist unserem Herrn heilig; und betrübet euch nicht, denn die Freude an Jehova ist eure Stärke.

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”

Und die Leviten beschwichtigten das ganze Volk, indem sie sprachen: Seid stille, denn der Tag ist heilig; und betrübet euch nicht!

So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Hold your peace, for the day is holy. Don’t be grieved.”

Und das ganze Volk ging hin, um zu essen und zu trinken und Teile zu senden und ein großes Freudenfest zu begehen. Denn sie hatten die Worte verstanden, die man ihnen kundgetan hatte.

All the people went their way to eat, to drink, to send portions, and to celebrate, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

Und am zweiten Tage versammelten sich die Häupter der Väter des ganzen Volkes, die Priester und die Leviten, zu Esra, dem Schriftgelehrten, und zwar um aufzumerken auf die Worte des Gesetzes.

On the second day, the heads of fathers’ households of all the people, the priests, and the Levites were gathered together to Ezra the scribe, to study the words of the law.

Und sie fanden im Gesetz geschrieben, daß Jehova durch Mose geboten hatte, daß die Kinder Israel am Feste im siebten Monat in Laubhütten wohnen sollten,

They found written in the law how Yahweh had commanded by Moses that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month;

und daß sie verkündigen und einen Ruf ergehen lassen sollten durch alle ihre Städte und durch Jerusalem, und sagen: Gehet hinaus auf das Gebirge und holet Zweige vom Olivenbaum und Zweige vom wilden Ölbaum und Myrtenzweige und Palmzweige und Zweige von dichtbelaubten Bäumen, um Hütten zu machen, wie geschrieben steht!

and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and get olive branches, branches of wild olive, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make temporary shelters, as it is written.”

Und das Volk ging hinaus und holte herbei; und sie machten sich Hütten, ein jeder auf seinem Dache und in ihren Höfen, und in den Höfen des Hauses Gottes, und auf dem Platze am Wassertore, und auf dem Platze am Tore Ephraim.

So the people went out, and brought them, and made themselves temporary shelters, everyone on the roof of his house, in their courts, in the courts of God’s house, in the wide place of the water gate, and in the wide place of Ephraim’s gate.

Und die ganze Versammlung, die aus der Gefangenschaft zurückgekehrt war, machte Hütten und wohnte in den Hütten. Denn die Kinder Israel hatten nicht also getan seit den Tagen Josuas, des Sohnes Nuns, bis auf jenen Tag. Und es war eine sehr große Freude.

All the assembly of those who had come back out of the captivity made temporary shelters, and lived in the booths; for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the children of Israel had not done so. There was very great gladness.

Und man las in dem Buche des Gesetzes Gottes Tag für Tag, vom ersten Tage bis zum letzten Tage. Und sie feierten das Fest sieben Tage lang; und am achten Tage war eine Festversammlung nach der Vorschrift.

Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. They kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.

Kapitel 9

Und am 24. Tage dieses Monats versammelten sich die Kinder Israel unter Fasten, und in Sacktuch gekleidet, und mit Erde auf ihren Häuptern.

Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, with sackcloth, and dirt on them.

Und der Same Israels sonderte sich ab von allen Kindern der Fremde; und sie traten hin und bekannten ihre Sünden und die Ungerechtigkeiten ihrer Väter.

The offspring of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

Und sie standen auf an ihrer Stelle und lasen in dem Buche des Gesetzes Jehovas, ihres Gottes, ein Viertel des Tages. Und ein anderes Viertel des Tages bekannten sie ihre Sünden und warfen sich nieder vor Jehova, ihrem Gott.

They stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of Yahweh their God a fourth part of the day; and a fourth part they confessed, and worshiped Yahweh their God.

Und Jeschua und Bani, Kadmiel, Schebanja, Bunni, Scherebja, Bani, Kenani traten auf die Erhöhung der Leviten, und sie schrieen mit lauter Stimme zu Jehova, ihrem Gott.

Then Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani of the Levites stood up on the stairs, and cried with a loud voice to Yahweh their God.

Und die Leviten Jeschua und Kadmiel, Bani, Haschabneja, Scherebja, Hodija, Schebanja, Pethachja sprachen: Stehet auf, preiset Jehova, euren Gott, von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit! Und man preise deinen herrlichen Namen, der erhaben ist über allen Preis und Ruhm!

Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, “Stand up and bless Yahweh your God from everlasting to everlasting! Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise!

Du bist, der da ist, Jehova, du allein; du hast die Himmel gemacht, der Himmel Himmel und all ihr Heer, die Erde und alles, was darauf ist, die Meere und alles, was in ihnen ist. Und du machst dies alles lebendig, und das Heer des Himmels betet dich an.

You are Yahweh, even you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their army, the earth and all things that are on it, the seas and all that is in them, and you preserve them all. The army of heaven worships you.

Du bist es, Jehova, Gott, der du Abram erwählt und ihn aus Ur in Chaldäa herausgeführt, und ihm den Namen Abraham gegeben hast.

You are Yahweh, the God who chose Abram, brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees, gave him the name of Abraham,

Und du hast sein Herz treu vor dir erfunden und hast mit ihm den Bund gemacht, das Land der Kanaaniter, der Hethiter, der Amoriter und der Perisiter und der Jebusiter und der Girgasiter zu geben - seinem Samen es zu geben; und du hast deine Worte erfüllt, denn du bist gerecht.

found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it to his offspring, and have performed your words; for you are righteous.

Und du hast das Elend unserer Väter in Ägypten angesehen, und hast ihr Geschrei am Schilfmeere gehört.

“You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the Red Sea,

Und du hast Zeichen und Wunder getan an dem Pharao und an allen seinen Knechten und an allem Volke seines Landes; denn du wußtest, daß sie in Übermut gegen sie gehandelt hatten; und du hast dir einen Namen gemacht, wie es an diesem Tage ist.

and showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, and against all his servants, and against all the people of his land; for you knew that they dealt proudly against them, and made a name for yourself, as it is today.

Und das Meer hast du vor ihnen gespalten, und sie zogen mitten durch das Meer auf dem Trockenen; aber ihre Verfolger hast du in die Tiefen gestürzt, wie einen Stein in mächtige Wasser.

You divided the sea before them, so that they went through the middle of the sea on the dry land; and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into the mighty waters.

Und in einer Wolkensäule hast du sie geleitet des Tages, und in einer Feuersäule des Nachts, um ihnen den Weg zu erleuchten, auf welchem sie ziehen sollten.

Moreover, in a pillar of cloud you led them by day; and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way in which they should go.

Und auf den Berg Sinai bist du herabgestiegen, und hast vom Himmel her mit ihnen geredet; und du hast ihnen gerade Rechte und Gesetze der Wahrheit, gute Satzungen und Gebote gegeben.

“You also came down on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments,

Und deinen heiligen Sabbath hast du ihnen kundgetan, und hast ihnen Gebote und Satzungen und ein Gesetz geboten durch Mose, deinen Knecht.

and made known to them your holy Sabbath, and commanded them commandments, statutes, and a law, by Moses your servant,

Und Brot vom Himmel hast du ihnen gegeben für ihren Hunger, und Wasser aus dem Felsen ihnen hervorgebracht für ihren Durst; und du hast ihnen gesagt, daß sie hineinziehen sollten, um das Land in Besitz zu nehmen, welches du ihnen zu geben geschworen hattest.

and gave them bread from the sky for their hunger, and brought water out of the rock for them for their thirst, and commanded them that they should go in to possess the land which you had sworn to give them.

Aber sie, nämlich unsere Väter, waren übermütig, und sie verhärteten ihren Nacken und hörten nicht auf deine Gebote.

“But they and our fathers behaved proudly, hardened their neck, didn’t listen to your commandments,

Und sie weigerten sich zu gehorchen, und gedachten nicht deiner Wunder, welche du an ihnen getan hattest; sie verhärteten ihren Nacken und setzten sich in ihrer Widerspenstigkeit ein Haupt, um zu ihrer Knechtschaft zurückzukehren. Du aber bist ein Gott der Vergebung, gnädig und barmherzig, langsam zum Zorn und groß an Güte, und du verließest sie nicht.

and refused to obey. They weren’t mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and didn’t forsake them.

Sogar als sie sich ein gegossenes Kalb machten und sprachen: Das ist dein Gott, der dich aus Ägypten heraufgeführt hat! und große Schmähungen verübten,

Yes, when they had made themselves a molten calf, and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed awful blasphemies;

verließest du in deinen großen Erbarmungen sie doch nicht in der Wüste. Die Wolkensäule wich nicht von ihnen des Tages, um sie auf dem Wege zu leiten, noch die Feuersäule des Nachts, um ihnen den Weg zu erleuchten, auf welchem sie ziehen sollten.

yet you in your manifold mercies didn’t forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud didn’t depart from over them by day, to lead them in the way; neither did the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way in which they should go.

Und du gabst ihnen deinen guten Geist, um sie zu unterweisen; und dein Manna versagtest du nicht ihrem Munde, und du gabst ihnen Wasser für ihren Durst.

You gave also your good Spirit to instruct them, and didn’t withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst.

Und vierzig Jahre lang versorgtest du sie in der Wüste, sie hatten keinen Mangel; ihre Kleider zerfielen nicht, und ihre Füße schwollen nicht.

“Yes, forty years you sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing. Their clothes didn’t grow old, and their feet didn’t swell.

Und du gabst ihnen Königreiche und Völker und verteiltest ihnen dieselben nach Gegenden; und sie nahmen das Land Sihons in Besitz, sowohl das Land des Königs von Hesbon, als auch das Land Ogs, des Königs von Basan.

Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you allotted according to their portions. So they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

Und ihre Söhne mehrtest du wie die Sterne des Himmels; und du brachtest sie in das Land, von welchem du ihren Vätern gesagt hattest, daß sie hineingehen sollten, um es in Besitz zu nehmen;

You also multiplied their children as the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land concerning which you said to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.

und die Söhne kamen hinein und nahmen das Land in Besitz. Und du beugtest vor ihnen die Bewohner des Landes, die Kanaaniter, und gabst sie in ihre Hand, sowohl ihre Könige als auch die Völker des Landes, um mit ihnen zu tun nach ihrem Wohlgefallen.

“So the children went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they pleased.

Und sie nahmen feste Städte ein und ein fettes Land, und nahmen Häuser in Besitz, die mit allerlei Gut gefüllt waren, ausgehauene Brunnen, Weinberge und Olivengärten und Obstbäume in Menge. Und sie aßen und wurden satt und fett und ließen sich's wohl sein durch deine große Güte.

They took fortified cities and a rich land, and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns dug out, vineyards, and olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate, were filled, became fat, and delighted themselves in your great goodness.

Aber sie wurden widerspenstig und empörten sich gegen dich, und warfen dein Gesetz hinter ihren Rücken; und sie ermordeten deine Propheten, welche wider sie zeugten, um sie zu dir zurückzuführen; und sie verübten große Schmähungen.

“Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against you, cast your law behind their back, killed your prophets that testified against them to turn them again to you, and they committed awful blasphemies.

Da gabst du sie in die Hand ihrer Bedränger, und diese bedrängten sie; und zur Zeit ihrer Bedrängnis schrieen sie zu dir, und du hörtest vom Himmel her und gabst ihnen Retter nach deinen großen Erbarmungen, und diese retteten sie aus der Hand ihrer Bedränger.

Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them. In the time of their trouble, when they cried to you, you heard from heaven; and according to your manifold mercies you gave them saviors who saved them out of the hands of their adversaries.

Aber sobald sie Ruhe hatten, taten sie wiederum Böses vor dir. Da überließest du sie der Hand ihrer Feinde, daß diese über sie herrschten; und sie schrieen wiederum zu dir, und du hörtest vom Himmel her und errettetest sie nach deinen Erbarmungen viele Male.

But after they had rest, they did evil again before you; therefore left you them in the hands of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them; yet when they returned, and cried to you, you heard from heaven; and many times you delivered them according to your mercies,

Und du zeugtest wider sie, um sie zu deinem Gesetz zurückzuführen, sie aber waren übermütig und gehorchten deinen Geboten nicht, sondern sündigten wider deine Rechte, durch welche der Mensch, wenn er sie tut, leben wird; und sie zogen die Schulter widerspenstig zurück und verhärteten ihren Nacken und gehorchten nicht.

and testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law. Yet they were arrogant, and didn’t listen to your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances (which if a man does, he shall live in them), turned their backs, stiffened their neck, and would not hear.

Und du verzogest mit ihnen viele Jahre und zeugtest wider sie durch deinen Geist, durch deine Propheten, aber sie gaben kein Gehör. Da gabst du sie in die Hand der Völker der Länder.

Yet many years you put up with them, and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet would they not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.

Aber in deinen großen Erbarmungen hast du ihnen nicht den Garaus gemacht und sie nicht verlassen; denn du bist ein gnädiger und barmherziger Gott.

“Nevertheless in your manifold mercies you did not make a full end of them, nor forsake them; for you are a gracious and merciful God.

Und nun, unser Gott, du großer, starker und furchtbarer Gott, der den Bund und die Güte bewahrt, laß nicht gering vor dir sein alle die Mühsal, die uns betroffen hat, unsere Könige, unsere Obersten und unsere Priester und unsere Propheten und unsere Väter und dein ganzes Volk, seit den Tagen der Könige von Assyrien bis auf diesen Tag!

Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness, don’t let all the travail seem little before you, that has come on us, on our kings, on our princes, on our priests, on our prophets, on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria to this day.

Doch du bist gerecht in allem, was über uns gekommen ist; denn du hast nach der Wahrheit gehandelt, wir aber, wir haben gesetzlos gehandelt.

However you are just in all that has come on us; for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly.

Und unsere Könige, unsere Obersten, unsere Priester und unsere Väter haben dein Gesetz nicht gehalten, und haben nicht gemerkt auf deine Gebote und auf deine Zeugnisse, womit du wider sie gezeugt hast.

Also our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have not kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies with which you testified against them.

Und sie haben dir nicht gedient in ihrem Königreiche und in der Fülle deiner Güter, welche du ihnen gegeben, und in dem weiten und fetten Lande, das du vor sie gelegt hattest, und sind nicht umgekehrt von ihren bösen Handlungen.

For they have not served you in their kingdom, and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and rich land which you gave before them. They did not turn from their wicked works.

Siehe, wir sind heute Knechte; und das Land, welches du unseren Vätern gegeben hast, um seine Früchte und seine Güter zu genießen, - siehe, wir sind Knechte in demselben!

“Behold, we are servants today, and as for the land that you gave to our fathers to eat its fruit and its good, behold, we are servants in it.

Und seinen Ertrag mehrt es für die Könige, die du um unserer Sünden willen über uns gesetzt hast; und sie schalten über unsere Leiber und über unser Vieh nach ihrem Wohlgefallen, und wir sind in großer Bedrängnis.

It yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. Also they have power over our bodies and over our livestock, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

schlossen sich ihren Brüdern, den Vornehmen unter ihnen, an und traten in Eid und Schwur, nach dem Gesetz Gottes, welches durch Mose, den Knecht Gottes, gegeben worden ist, zu wandeln und alle Gebote Jehovas, unseres Herrn, und seine Rechte und seine Satzungen zu beobachten und zu tun;

they joined with their brothers, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God’s law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of Yahweh our Lord, and his ordinances and his statutes;

and that we would not give our daughters to the peoples of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons;

and if the peoples of the land bring wares or any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy from them on the Sabbath, or on a holy day; and that we would forego the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.

Und wir verpflichteten uns dazu, uns den dritten Teil eines Sekels im Jahre für den Dienst des Hauses unseres Gottes aufzuerlegen:

Also we made ordinances for ourselves, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;

für das Schichtbrot und das beständige Speisopfer, und für das beständige Brandopfer und für dasjenige der Sabbathe und der Neumonde, für die Feste und für die heiligen Dinge und für die Sündopfer, um Sühnung zu tun für Israel, und für alles Werk des Hauses unseres Gottes.

for the show bread, for the continual meal offering, for the continual burnt offering, for the Sabbaths, for the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.

We cast lots, the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, according to our fathers’ houses, at times appointed, year by year, to burn on Yahweh our God’s altar, as it is written in the law;

and to bring the first fruits of our ground, and the first fruits of all fruit of all kinds of trees, year by year, to Yahweh’s house;

also the firstborn of our sons, and of our livestock, as it is written in the law, and the firstborn of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God;

Und den Erstling unseres Schrotmehls und unsere Hebopfer, und die Früchte von allerlei Bäumen, Most und Öl wollen wir den Priestern bringen in die Zellen des Hauses unseres Gottes; und den Zehnten unseres Landes den Leviten. Denn sie, die Leviten, sind es, welche den Zehnten erheben in allen Städten unseres Ackerbaues;

and that we should bring the first fruits of our dough, our wave offerings, the fruit of all kinds of trees, and the new wine and the oil, to the priests, to the rooms of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground to the Levites; for they, the Levites, take the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.

und der Priester, der Sohn Aarons, soll bei den Leviten sein, wenn die Leviten den Zehnten erheben. Und die Leviten sollen den Zehnten vom Zehnten zum Hause unseres Gottes hinaufbringen, in die Zellen des Schatzhauses.

The priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes. The Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes to the house of our God, to the rooms, into the treasure house.

Denn in die Zellen sollen die Kinder Israel und die Kinder Levi das Hebopfer vom Getreide, vom Most und Öl bringen; denn dort sind die heiligen Geräte und die Priester, welche den Dienst verrichten, und die Torhüter und die Sänger. Und so wollen wir das Haus unseres Gottes nicht verlassen.

For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the wave offering of the grain, of the new wine, and of the oil, to the rooms, where the vessels of the sanctuary are, and the priests who minister, with the gatekeepers and the singers. We will not forsake the house of our God.

Kapitel 11

Und die Obersten des Volkes wohnten in Jerusalem. Und das übrige Volk warf Lose, um je einen von zehn kommen zu lassen, damit er in Jerusalem, der heiligen Stadt, wohne, die neun anderen Teile aber in den Städten blieben.

The princes of the people lived in Jerusalem. The rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts in the other cities.

Und das Volk segnete alle Männer, die sich freiwillig erboten, in Jerusalem zu wohnen.

The people blessed all the men who willingly offered themselves to dwell in Jerusalem.

Und dies sind die Häupter der Landschaft, welche in Jerusalem wohnten; in den Städten Judas aber wohnten, ein jeder in seinem Besitztum, in ihren Städten: Israel, die Priester und die Leviten und die Nethinim und die Söhne der Knechte Salomos.

Now these are the chiefs of the province who lived in Jerusalem; but in the cities of Judah everyone lived in his possession in their cities: Israel, the priests, the Levites, the temple servants, and the children of Solomon’s servants.

Und zwar wohnten in Jerusalem von den Söhnen Judas und von den Söhnen Benjamins; von den Söhnen Judas: Athaja, der Sohn Ussijas, des Sohnes Sekarjas, des Sohnes Amarjas, des Sohnes Schephatjas, des Sohnes Mahalalels, von den Söhnen Perez';

Some of the children of Judah and of the children of Benjamin lived in Jerusalem. Of the children of Judah: Athaiah the son of Uzziah, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel, of the children of Perez;

und Maaseja, der Sohn Baruks, des Sohnes Kol-Hoses, des Sohnes Hasajas, des Sohnes Adajas, des Sohnes Jojaribs, des Sohnes Sekarjas, von den Schilonitern.

and Maaseiah the son of Baruch, the son of Colhozeh, the son of Hazaiah, the son of Adaiah, the son of Joiarib, the son of Zechariah, the son of the Shilonite.

Aller Söhne des Perez, die in Jerusalem wohnten, waren 468 tapfere Männer.

All the sons of Perez who lived in Jerusalem were four hundred sixty-eight valiant men.

and Mattaniah the son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, who was the chief to begin the thanksgiving in prayer, and Bakbukiah, the second among his brothers; and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.

Aller Leviten in der heiligen Stadt waren 284. -

All the Levites in the holy city were two hundred eighty-four.

Und die Torhüter: Akkub, Talmon und ihre Brüder, die in den Toren Wache hielten, 172. -

Moreover the gatekeepers, Akkub, Talmon, and their brothers, who kept watch at the gates, were one hundred seventy-two.

(Und das übrige Israel, die Priester, die Leviten, waren in allen Städten Judas, ein jeder in seinem Erbteil. -

The residue of Israel, of the priests, the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, everyone in his inheritance.

Und die Nethinim wohnten auf dem Ophel; und Zicha und Gischpa waren über die Nethinim. -)

But the temple servants lived in Ophel: and Ziha and Gishpa were over the temple servants.

Und Aufseher der Leviten in Jerusalem war Ussi, der Sohn Banis, des Sohnes Haschabjas, des Sohnes Mattanjas, des Sohnes Michas, von den Söhnen Asaphs, den Sängern, für das Geschäft im Hause Gottes.

The overseer also of the Levites at Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Mica, of the sons of Asaph, the singers, over the business of God’s house.

Denn ein Gebot des Königs war über sie ergangen, und eine Verpflichtung über die Sänger betreffs der täglichen Gebühr.

For there was a commandment from the king concerning them, and a settled provision for the singers, as every day required.

Und Pethachja, der Sohn Meschesabeels, von den Söhnen Serachs, des Sohnes Judas, war zur Hand des Königs für alle Angelegenheiten des Volkes.

Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the children of Zerah the son of Judah, was at the king’s hand in all matters concerning the people.

in Jeshua, in Moladah, Beth Pelet,

und in Hazar-Schual und in Beerseba und seinen Tochterstädten,

in Hazar Shual, in Beersheba and its towns,

und in Ziklag und in Mekona und in seinen Tochterstädten,

in Ziklag, in Meconah and in its towns,

und in En-Rimmon und in Zora und in Jarmuth,

in En Rimmon, in Zorah, in Jarmuth,

Sanoach, Adullam und seinen Dörfern, Lachis und seinen Feldern, Aseka und seinen Tochterstädten. Und sie ließen sich nieder von Beerseba bis zum Tale Hinnom.

As for the Levites, in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, and Johanan, and Jaddua, there were recorded the heads of fathers’ households; also the priests, in the reign of Darius the Persian.

Die Söhne Levis, die Häupter der Väter, sind in dem Buche der Chronika eingeschrieben, und zwar bis auf die Tage Jochanans, des Sohnes Eljaschibs. -

The sons of Levi, heads of fathers’ households, were written in the book of the chronicles, even until the days of Johanan the son of Eliashib.

Und die Häupter der Leviten waren Haschabja, Scherebja und Jeschua, der Sohn des Kadmiel, und ihre Brüder, die ihnen gegenüber standen, um zu loben und zu preisen, nach dem Gebote Davids, des Mannes Gottes, Abteilung gegenüber Abteilung.

The chiefs of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brothers close to them, to praise and give thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God, watch next to watch.

Mattanja und Bakbukja, Obadja, Meschullam, Talmon, Akkub hielten als Torhüter Wache bei den Vorratskammern der Tore. -

Mattaniah, and Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, Akkub, were gatekeepers keeping the watch at the storehouses of the gates.

Diese waren in den Tagen Jojakims, des Sohnes Jeschuas, des Sohnes Jozadaks, und in den Tagen Nehemias, des Landpflegers, und Esras, des Priesters, des Schriftgelehrten.

These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor, and of Ezra the priest and scribe.

Und bei der Einweihung der Mauer von Jerusalem suchte man die Leviten aus allen ihren Orten, daß man sie nach Jerusalem brächte, um die Einweihung zu feiern mit Freuden, und mit Lobliedern und mit Gesang, mit Zimbeln, Harfen und Lauten.

At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with giving thanks, and with singing, with cymbals, stringed instruments, and with harps.

The sons of the singers gathered themselves together, both out of the plain around Jerusalem and from the villages of the Netophathites;

und aus Beth-Gilgal und aus den Gefilden von Geba und Asmaweth; denn die Sänger hatten sich in der Umgebung von Jerusalem Dörfer gebaut.

also from Beth Gilgal, and out of the fields of Geba and Azmaveth: for the singers had built themselves villages around Jerusalem.

Und die Priester und die Leviten reinigten sich; und sie reinigten das Volk und die Tore und die Mauer.

The priests and the Levites purified themselves; and they purified the people, and the gates, and the wall.

Und ich ließ die Obersten von Juda oben auf die Mauer steigen; und ich stellte zwei große Dankchöre und Züge auf. Der eine zog zur Rechten, oben auf der Mauer, zum Misttore hin.

Then I brought up the princes of Judah on the wall, and appointed two great companies who gave thanks and went in procession. One went on the right hand on the wall toward the dung gate;

Und hinter ihnen her gingen Hoschaja und die Hälfte der Obersten von Juda,

and after them went Hoshaiah, with half of the princes of Judah,

und zwar Asarja, Esra und Meschullam,

and Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam,

Juda und Benjamin, und Schemaja und Jeremia;

Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, Jeremiah,

und von den Söhnen der Priester mit Trompeten: Sekarja, der Sohn Jonathans, des Sohnes Schemajas, des Sohnes Mattanjas, des Sohnes Mikajas, des Sohnes Sakkurs, des Sohnes Asaphs;

and some of the priests’ sons with trumpets: Zechariah the son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph;

und seine Brüder: Schemaja und Asarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethaneel und Juda, Hanani, mit den Musikinstrumenten Davids, des Mannes Gottes; und Esra, der Schriftgelehrte, vor ihnen her.

and his brothers, Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God; and Ezra the scribe was before them.

Und sie zogen zum Quelltore; und sie stiegen gerade vor sich hin auf den Stufen der Stadt Davids den Aufgang der Mauer hinauf, und zogen an dem Hause Davids vorüber und bis an das Wassertor gegen Osten.

By the spring gate, and straight before them, they went up by the stairs of David’s city, at the ascent of the wall, above David’s house, even to the water gate eastward.

Und der zweite Dankchor zog nach der entgegengesetzten Seite, und ich und die Hälfte des Volkes ging hinter ihm her, ober auf der Mauer, an dem Ofenturm vorüber und bis an die breite Mauer;

The other company of those who gave thanks went to meet them, and I after them, with the half of the people, on the wall, above the tower of the furnaces, even to the wide wall,

und an dem Tore Ephraim und dem Tore der alten Mauer und dem Fischtore und dem Turme Hananeel und dem Turme Mea vorüber und bis an das Schaftor; und sie blieben beim Gefängnistore stehen.

and above the gate of Ephraim, and by the old gate, and by the fish gate, and the tower of Hananel, and the tower of Hammeah, even to the sheep gate: and they stood still in the gate of the guard.

Und beide Dankchöre stellten sich am Hause Gottes auf; und ich und die Hälfte der Vorsteher mit mir,

So the two companies of those who gave thanks in God’s house stood, and I, and the half of the rulers with me;

und die Priester Eljakim, Maaseja, Minjamin, Mikaja, Eljoenai, Sekarja, Hananja, mit Trompeten;

and the priests, Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with trumpets;

und Maaseja und Schemaja und Eleasar und Ussi und Jochanan und Malkija und Elam und Eser. Und die Sänger ließen ihre Stimme erschallen, und Jisrachja war ihr Vorsteher.

and Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. The singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their overseer.

Und sie opferten an selbigem Tage große Schlachtopfer und freuten sich, denn Gott hatte ihnen große Freude gegeben; und auch die Weiber und die Kinder freuten sich. Und die Freude Jerusalems wurde bis in die Ferne hin gehört.

They offered great sacrifices that day, and rejoiced; for God had made them rejoice with great joy; and the women and the children also rejoiced; so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even far away.

Und es wurden an selbigem Tage Männer bestellt über die Vorratskammern für die Hebopfer, für die Erstlinge und für die Zehnten, um von den Feldern der Städte die gesetzlichen Teile für die Priester und für die Leviten darein zu sammeln; denn Juda hatte Freude an den Priestern und an den Leviten, welche dastanden.

On that day were men appointed over the rooms for the treasures, for the wave offerings, for the first fruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them, according to the fields of the cities, the portions appointed by the law for the priests and Levites; for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites who waited.

Und sie warteten der Hut ihres Gottes und der Hut der Reinigung; und so auch die Sänger und die Torhüter, nach dem Gebote Davids und seines Sohnes Salomo.

They performed the duty of their God, and the duty of the purification, and so did the singers and the gatekeepers, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.

Denn vor alters, in den Tagen Davids und Asaphs, gab es Häupter der Sänger, und Preis- und Lobgesänge für Gott.

For in the days of David and Asaph of old there was a chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.

Und ganz Israel gab in den Tagen Serubbabels und in den Tagen Nehemias die Teile der Sänger und der Torhüter, den täglichen Bedarf; das Geheiligte aber gaben sie den Leviten, und die Leviten gaben das Geheiligte den Söhnen Aarons.

All Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the gatekeepers, as every day required; and they set apart that which was for the Levites; and the Levites set apart that which was for the sons of Aaron.

Kapitel 13

An selbigem Tage wurde in dem Buche Moses vor den Ohren des Volkes gelesen; und es fand sich darin geschrieben, daß kein Ammoniter und Moabiter in die Versammlung Gottes kommen sollte ewiglich;

On that day they read in the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and it was found written in it that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,

weil sie den Kindern Israel nicht mit Brot und mit Wasser entgegen gekommen waren, und Bileam wider sie gedungen hatten, um sie zu verfluchen; aber unser Gott wandelte den Fluch in Segen.

because they didn’t meet the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them; however our God turned the curse into a blessing.

Und es geschah, als sie das Gesetz hörten, da sonderten sie alles Mischvolk von Israel ab.

It came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated all the mixed multitude from Israel.

Und vor diesem hatte Eljaschib, der Priester, der über die Zellen des Hauses unseres Gottes gesetzt war, ein Verwandter des Tobija,

Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah,

diesem eine große Zelle gemacht, wohin man vordem die Speisopfer legte, den Weihrauch und die Geräte und den Zehnten vom Getreide, Most und Öl, das für die Leviten und die Sänger und die Torhüter Gebotene, und die Hebopfer der Priester.

had prepared for him a great room, where before they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, the singers, and the gatekeepers; and the wave offerings for the priests.

Während diesem allem war ich aber nicht in Jerusalem; denn im 32. Jahre Artasastas, des Königs von Babel, war ich zu dem König zurückgekommen. Und nach Verlauf einer Zeit erbat ich mir Urlaub von dem König;

But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king; and after some days I asked leave of the king,

und als ich nach Jerusalem kam, bemerkte ich das Böse, welches Eljaschib zugunsten Tobijas getan, indem er ihm eine Zelle in den Höfen des Hauses Gottes gemacht hatte.

and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of God’s house.

Und es mißfiel mir sehr, und ich warf alle Hausgeräte Tobijas aus der Zelle hinaus;

It grieved me severely. Therefore I threw all Tobiah’s household stuff out of the room.

und ich befahl, daß man die Zellen reinigen sollte; und ich brachte die Geräte des Hauses Gottes, das Speisopfer und den Weihrauch wieder hinein.

Then I commanded, and they cleansed the rooms. I brought into them the vessels of God’s house, with the meal offerings and the frankincense again.

Und ich erfuhr, daß die Teile der Leviten nicht gegeben worden, und daß die Leviten und die Sänger, welche das Werk taten, entflohen waren, ein jeder auf sein Feld.

I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had each fled to his field.

Da zankte ich mit den Vorstehern und sprach: Warum ist das Haus Gottes verlassen worden? Und ich versammelte sie und stellte sie an ihre Stelle.

Then I contended with the rulers, and said, “Why is God’s house forsaken?” I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

Und ganz Juda brachte den Zehnten vom Getreide und Most und Öl in die Vorratskammern.

Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the treasuries.

Und ich bestellte zu Schatzmeistern über die Vorräte: Schelemja, den Priester, und Zadok, den Schreiber, und Pedaja, von den Leviten, und ihnen zur Seite Hanan, den Sohn Sakkurs, des Sohnes Mattanjas; denn sie wurden für treu geachtet, und ihnen lag es ob, ihren Brüdern auszuteilen.

I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute to their brothers.

Gedenke meiner um dessentwillen, mein Gott, und tilge nicht aus meine guten Taten, die ich am Hause meines Gottes und an dessen Hut erwiesen habe!

Remember me, my God, concerning this, and don’t wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances.

In jenen Tagen sah ich einige in Juda, welche am Sabbath die Keltern traten, und Garben einbrachten und auf Esel luden, und auch Wein, Trauben und Feigen und allerlei Last, und es am Sabbathtage nach Jerusalem hereinbrachten; und ich zeugte wider sie an dem Tage, da sie die Lebensmittel verkauften.

In those days saw I in Judah some men treading wine presses on the Sabbath, bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys; also with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day; and I testified against them in the day in which they sold food.

Auch Tyrer wohnten darin, welche Fische und allerlei Waren hereinbrachten und sie am Sabbath den Kindern Juda und in Jerusalem verkauften.

Some men of Tyre also lived there, who brought in fish and all kinds of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

Da zankte ich mit den Edlen von Juda und sprach zu ihnen: Was ist das für eine böse Sache, die ihr tut, daß ihr den Sabbathtag entheiliget?

Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the Sabbath day?

Haben nicht eure Väter ebenso getan, so daß unser Gott all dieses Unglück über uns und über diese Stadt brachte? Und ihr mehret die Zornglut über Israel, indem ihr den Sabbath entheiliget!

Didn’t your fathers do thus, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us, and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

Und es geschah, sowie es in den Toren Jerusalems vor dem Sabbath dunkel wurde, da befahl ich, daß die Türen geschlossen würden; und ich befahl, daß man sie nicht auftun sollte bis nach dem Sabbath. Und ich bestellte einige von meinen Dienern über die Tore, damit keine Last am Sabbathtage hereinkäme.

It came to pass that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, so that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day.

Da übernachteten die Krämer und die Verkäufer von allerlei Ware draußen vor Jerusalem einmal und zweimal.

So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares camped outside of Jerusalem once or twice.

Und ich zeugte wider sie und sprach zu ihnen: Warum übernachtet ihr vor der Mauer? Wenn ihr es wieder tut, werde ich Hand an euch legen! Von dieser Zeit an kamen sie nicht mehr am Sabbath.

Then I testified against them, and said to them, “Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they didn’t come on the Sabbath.

Und ich befahl den Leviten, daß sie sich reinigen und kommen sollten, die Tore zu bewachen, um den Sabbathtag zu heiligen. Auch das gedenke mir, mein Gott, und schone meiner nach der Größe deiner Güte!

I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember to me, my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness.

Auch besuchte ich in jenen Tagen die Juden, welche asdoditische, ammonitische und moabitische Weiber heimgeführt hatten.

In those days I also saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab;

Und die Hälfte ihrer Kinder redete asdoditisch und wußte nicht jüdisch zu reden, sondern redete nach der Sprache des einen oder anderen Volkes.

and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.

Und ich zankte mit ihnen und fluchte ihnen, und schlug einige Männer von ihnen und raufte sie. Und ich beschwor sie bei Gott: Wenn ihr eure Töchter ihren Söhnen geben werdet, und wenn ihr von ihren Töchtern für eure Söhne und für euch nehmen werdet!

I contended with them, and cursed them, and struck certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

Hat nicht Salomo, der König von Israel, ihretwegen gesündigt? Und seinesgleichen ist unter den vielen Nationen kein König gewesen; und er war geliebt von seinem Gott, und Gott setzte ihn zum König über ganz Israel; doch ihn machten die fremden Weiber sündigen.

Didn’t Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin.

Und sollten wir auf euch hören, daß ihr all dieses große Übel tut, treulos zu handeln gegen unseren Gott, indem ihr fremde Weiber heimführet!

Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?”

Und einer von den Söhnen Jojadas, des Sohnes Eljaschibs, des Hohenpriesters, war ein Eidam Sanballats, des Horoniters; und ich jagte ihn von mir weg.

One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I chased him from me.

Gedenke es ihnen, mein Gott, wegen der Verunreinigungen des Priestertums und des Bundes des Priestertums und der Leviten!

Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.

Und so reinigte ich sie von allem Fremden, und ich stellte die Dienstleistungen der Priester und der Leviten fest, für einen jeden in seinem Geschäft,

Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners, and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work;

und für die Holzspende zu bestimmten Zeiten und für die Erstlinge. Gedenke es mir, mein Gott, zum Guten!

and for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the first fruits. Remember me, my God, for good.
