Kapitel 1

Und es geschah nach dem Tode Josuas, da befragten die Kinder Israel Jehova und sprachen: Wer von uns soll zuerst wider die Kanaaniter hinaufziehen, um wider sie zu streiten?

And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked of Jehovah, saying, Who shall go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?

Und Jehova sprach: Juda soll hinaufziehen; siehe, ich habe das Land in seine Hand gegeben.

And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

Und Juda sprach zu Simeon, seinem Bruder: Ziehe mit mir hinauf in mein Los, und laß uns wider die Kanaaniter streiten, so will auch ich mit dir in dein Los ziehen. Und Simeon zog mit ihm.

And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

Und Juda zog hinauf, und Jehova gab die Kanaaniter und die Perisiter in ihre Hand; und sie schlugen sie zu Besek, zehntausend Mann.

And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

Und sie fanden den Adoni-Besek in Besek und stritten wider ihn; und sie schlugen die Kanaaniter und die Perisiter.

And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

Und Adoni-Besek floh; und sie jagten ihm nach und ergriffen ihn und hieben ihm die Daumen seiner Hände und seiner Füße ab.

But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

Da sprach Adoni-Besek: Siebzig Könige, denen die Daumen ihrer Hände und ihrer Füße abgehauen waren, lasen auf unter meinem Tische; so wie ich getan habe, also hat Gott mir vergolten. Und sie brachten ihn nach Jerusalem, und er starb daselbst.

And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered [their food] under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

Und die Kinder Juda stritten wider Jerusalem und nahmen es ein und schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, und die Stadt steckten sie in Brand.

And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

Und danach zogen die Kinder Juda hinab, um wider die Kanaaniter zu streiten, die das Gebirge und den Süden und die Niederung bewohnten.

And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the South, and in the lowland.

Und Juda zog wider die Kanaaniter, die in Hebron wohnten; der Name Hebrons war aber vordem Kirjath-Arba; und sie schlugen Scheschai und Achiman und Talmai.

And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba); and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

Und er zog von dannen wider die Bewohner von Debir; der Name von Debir war aber vordem Kirjath-Sepher.

And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (Now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.)

Und Kaleb sprach: Wer Kirjath-Sepher schlägt und es einnimmt, dem gebe ich meine Tochter Aksa zum Weibe.

And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

Da nahm es Othniel ein, der Sohn Kenas', der jüngere Bruder Kalebs; und er gab ihm seine Tochter Aksa zum Weibe.

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb`s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

Und es geschah, als sie einzog, da trieb sie ihn an, ein Feld von ihrem Vater zu fordern. Und sie sprang von dem Esel herab. Und Kaleb sprach zu ihr: Was ist dir?

And it came to pass, when she came [unto him], that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?

Und sie sprach zu ihm: Gib mir einen Segen; denn ein Mittagsland hast du mir gegeben, so gib mir auch Wasserquellen! Da gab ihr Kaleb die oberen Quellen und die unteren Quellen.

And she said unto him, Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

Und die Kinder des Keniters, des Schwagers Moses, waren mit den Kindern Juda aus der Palmenstadt heraufgezogen in die Wüste Juda, die im Süden von Arad liegt; und sie gingen hin und wohnten bei dem Volke.

And the children of the Kenite, Moses` brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.

Und Juda zog mit seinem Bruder Simeon hin, und sie schlugen die Kanaaniter, welche Zephat bewohnten; und sie verbannten es und gaben der Stadt den Namen Horma.

And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

Und Juda nahm Gasa ein und sein Gebiet, und Askalon und sein Gebiet, und Ekron und sein Gebiet.

Also Judah took Gaza with the border thereof, and Ashkelon with the border thereof, and Ekron with the border thereof.

Und Jehova war mit Juda, und er nahm das Gebirge in Besitz; denn die Bewohner der Niederung trieb er nicht aus, weil sie eiserne Wagen hatten.

And Jehovah was with Judah; and drove out [the inhabitants of] the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

Und sie gaben dem Kaleb Hebron, so wie Mose geredet hatte; und er vertrieb daraus die drei Söhne Enaks.

And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken: and he drove out thence the three sons of Anak.

Aber die Kinder Benjamin trieben die Jebusiter, die Bewohner von Jerusalem, nicht aus; und die Jebusiter haben bei den Kindern Benjamin in Jerusalem gewohnt bis auf diesen Tag.

And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

Und das Haus Joseph, auch sie zogen nach Bethel hinauf, und Jehova war mit ihnen.

And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el; and Jehovah was with them.

Und das Haus Joseph ließ Bethel auskundschaften; vordem war aber Lus der Name der Stadt.

And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth-el. (Now the name of the city beforetime was Luz.)

Und die Wachen sahen einen Mann aus der Stadt herauskommen, und sie sprachen zu ihm: Zeige uns doch den Zugang zu der Stadt, so werden wir dir Güte erweisen.

And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.

Und er zeigte ihnen den Zugang zu der Stadt. Und sie schlugen die Stadt mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, aber den Mann und sein ganzes Geschlecht ließen sie gehen.

And he showed them the entrance into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.

Und der Mann zog in das Land der Hethiter; und er baute eine Stadt und gab ihr den Namen Lus. Das ist ihr Name bis auf diesen Tag.

And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.

Aber Manasse trieb nicht aus Beth-Schean und seine Tochterstädte, und Taanak und seine Tochterstädte, und die Bewohner von Dor und seine Tochterstädte, und die Bewohner von Jibleam und seine Tochterstädte, und die Bewohner von Megiddo und seine Tochterstädte; und die Kanaaniter wollten in diesem Lande bleiben.

And Manasseh did not drive out [the inhabitants of] Beth-shean and its towns, nor [of] Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

Und es geschah als Israel erstarkte, da machte es die Kanaaniter fronpflichtig; aber es trieb sie keineswegs aus. -

And it came to pass, when Israel was waxed strong, that they put the Canaanites to taskwork, and did not utterly drive them out.

Und Ephraim trieb die Kanaaniter nicht aus, die zu Geser wohnten; und die Kanaaniter wohnten in ihrer Mitte zu Geser. -

And Ephraim drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

Sebulon trieb nicht aus die Bewohner von Kitron und die Bewohner von Nahalol; und die Kanaaniter wohnten in ihrer Mitte und wurden fronpflichtig. -

Zebulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to taskwork.

Aser trieb nicht aus die Bewohner von Akko und die Bewohner von Zidon und Achlab und Aksib und Helba und Aphik und Rechob;

Asher drove not out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;

und die Aseriter wohnten inmitten der Kanaaniter, der Bewohner des Landes, denn sie trieben sie nicht aus.

but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

Naphtali trieb nicht aus die Bewohner von Beth-Semes und die Bewohner von Beth-Anath; und er wohnte inmitten der Kanaaniter, der Bewohner des Landes; aber die Bewohner von Beth-Semes und von Beth-Anath wurden ihm fronpflichtig.

Naphtali drove not out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to taskwork.

Und die Amoriter drängten die Kinder Dan ins Gebirge, denn sie gestatteten ihnen nicht, in die Niederung herabzukommen.

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country; for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley;

Und die Amoriter wollten im Gebirge Heres bleiben, in Ajjalon und in Schaalbim; aber die Hand des Hauses Joseph war schwer, und sie wurden fronpflichtig.

but the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to taskwork.

Und die Grenze der Amoriter war von der Anhöhe Akrabbim, von dem Felsen an und aufwärts.

And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

Kapitel 2

Und der Engel Jehovas kam von Gilgal herauf nach Bochim; und er sprach: Ich habe euch aus Ägypten heraufgeführt und euch in das Land gebracht, das ich euren Vätern zugeschworen habe; und ich sagte: Ich werde meinen Bund mit euch nicht brechen ewiglich;

And the angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you:

ihr aber, ihr sollt keinen Bund mit den Bewohnern dieses Landes machen, ihre Altäre sollt ihr niederreißen. Aber ihr habt meiner Stimme nicht gehorcht. Was habt ihr da getan!

and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this?

So habe ich auch gesagt: Ich werde sie nicht vor euch vertreiben; und sie werden zu euren Seiten sein, und ihre Götter werden euch zum Fallstrick werden.

Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be [as thorns] in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

Und es geschah, als der Engel Jehovas diese Worte zu allen Kindern Israel redete, da erhob das Volk seine Stimme und weinte.

And it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

Und sie gaben selbigem Orte den Namen Bochim. Und sie opferten daselbst dem Jehova.

And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto Jehovah.

Und Josua entließ das Volk, und die Kinder Israel gingen hin, ein jeder in sein Erbteil, um das Land in Besitz zu nehmen.

Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

Und das Volk diente Jehova alle Tage Josuas und alle Tage der Ältesten, welche ihre Tage nach Josua verlängerten, die das ganze große Werk Jehovas gesehen, das er für Israel getan hatte.

And the people served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Jehovah that he had wrought for Israel.

Und Josua, der Sohn Nuns, der Knecht Jehovas, starb, 110 Jahre alt;

And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.

und man begrub ihn im Gebiete seines Erbteils, zu Timnath-Heres auf dem Gebirge Ephraim, nördlich vom Berge Gaasch.

And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

Und auch das ganze selbige Geschlecht wurde zu seinen Vätern versammelt. Und ein anderes Geschlecht kam nach ihnen auf, das Jehova nicht kannte und auch nicht das Werk, welches er für Israel getan hatte.

And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, that knew not Jehovah, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel.

Und die Kinder Israel taten, was böse war in den Augen Jehovas und dienten den Baalim.

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim;

Und sie verließen Jehova, den Gott ihrer Väter, der sie aus dem Lande Ägypten herausgeführt hatte; und sie gingen anderen Göttern nach, von den Göttern der Völker, die rings um sie her waren, und sie warfen sich vor ihnen nieder und reizten Jehova.

and they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked Jehovah to anger.

Und sie verließen Jehova und dienten dem Baal und den Astaroth.

And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

Da entbrannte der Zorn Jehovas wider Israel, und er gab sie in die Hand von Plünderern, welche sie plünderten; und er verkaufte sie in die Hand ihrer Feinde ringsum; und sie vermochten nicht mehr vor ihren Feinden zu bestehen.

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that despoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

Überall, wohin sie auszogen, war die Hand Jehovas wider sie zum Bösen, so wie Jehova geredet und wie Jehova ihnen geschworen hatte; und sie wurden sehr bedrängt.

Whithersoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had spoken, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed.

Und Jehova erweckte Richter; und sie retteten sie aus der Hand ihrer Plünderer.

And Jehovah raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that despoiled them.

Aber auch ihren Richtern gehorchten sie nicht, denn sie hurten anderen Göttern nach und warfen sich vor ihnen nieder; sie wichen schnell ab von dem Wege, den ihre Väter gewandelt waren, indem sie den Geboten Jehovas gehorchten; sie taten nicht also.

And yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; [but] they did not so.

Und wenn Jehova ihnen Richter erweckte, so war Jehova mit dem Richter, und er rettete sie aus der Hand ihrer Feinde alle Tage des Richters; denn Jehova ließ sich's gereuen wegen ihrer Wehklage vor ihren Bedrückern und ihren Drängern.

And when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

Und es geschah, wenn der Richter starb, so verderbten sie sich wiederum, mehr als ihre Väter, indem sie anderen Göttern nachgingen, um ihnen zu dienen und sich vor ihnen niederzuwerfen. Sie ließen nichts fallen von ihren Taten und von ihrem hartnäckigen Wandel.

But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.

Da entbrannte der Zorn Jehovas wider Israel, und er sprach: Darum daß diese Nation meinen Bund übertreten hat, den ich ihren Vätern geboten, und sie meiner Stimme nicht gehorcht haben,

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;

so werde auch ich hinfort niemand vor ihnen austreiben von den Nationen, die Josua übriggelassen hat, als er starb:

I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;

um Israel durch sie zu versuchen, ob sie auf den Weg Jehovas achten werden, darauf zu wandeln, wie ihre Väter auf ihn geachtet haben, oder nicht.

that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

Und so ließ Jehova diese Nationen bleiben, so daß er sie nicht schnell austrieb; und er gab sie nicht in die Hand Josuas.

So Jehovah left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

Kapitel 3

Und dies sind die Nationen, welche Jehova bleiben ließ, um Israel durch sie zu versuchen, alle, die nichts wußten von allen Kriegen Kanaans -

Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, even as many [of Israel] as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

nur damit die Geschlechter der Kinder Israel Kenntnis von denselben bekämen, um sie den Krieg zu lehren: nur die, welche vordem nichts von denselben gewußt hatten: -

only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof:

die fünf Fürsten der Philister und alle Kanaaniter und Zidonier und Hewiter, welche das Gebirge Libanon bewohnten, von dem Berge Baal-Hermon an, bis man nach Hamath kommt.

[namely], the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath.

Und sie dienten dazu, Israel durch sie zu versuchen, um zu wissen, ob sie den Geboten Jehovas gehorchen würden, welche er ihren Vätern durch Mose geboten hatte.

And they were [left], to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

Und die Kinder Israel wohnten inmitten der Kanaaniter, der Hethiter und der Amoriter und der Perisiter und der Hewiter und der Jebusiter;

And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

und sie nahmen sich deren Töchter zu Weibern und gaben ihre Töchter deren Söhnen und dienten ihren Göttern.

and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.

Und die Kinder Israel taten, was böse war in den Augen Jehovas und vergaßen Jehovas, ihres Gottes, und sie dienten den Baalim und den Ascheroth.

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgat Jehovah their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth.

Da entbrannte der Zorn Jehovas wider Israel, und er verkaufte sie in die Hand Kuschan-Rischathaims, des Königs von Mesopotamien; und die Kinder Israel dienten dem Kuschan-Rischathaim acht Jahre.

Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

Und die Kinder Israel schrieen zu Jehova; und Jehova erweckte den Kindern Israel einen Retter, der sie rettete: Othniel, den Sohn Kenas', den jüngeren Bruder Kalebs.

And when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb`s younger brother.

Und der Geist Jehovas kam über ihn, und er richtete Israel; und er zog aus zum Streite, und Jehova gab Kuschan-Rischathaim, den König von Aram, in seine Hand, und seine Hand wurde stark wider Kuschan-Rischathaim.

And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.

Und das Land hatte Ruhe vierzig Jahre. Und Othniel, der Sohn Kenas', starb.

And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

Und die Kinder Israel taten wiederum, was böse war in den Augen Jehovas; und Jehova stärkte Eglon, den König von Moab, wider Israel, weil sie taten, was böse war in den Augen Jehovas.

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah.

Und er versammelte zu sich die Kinder Ammon und Amalek; und er zog hin und schlug Israel, und sie nahmen die Palmenstadt in Besitz.

And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm-trees.

Und die Kinder Israel dienten Eglon, dem König von Moab, achtzehn Jahre.

And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

Und die Kinder Israel schrien zu Jehova; und Jehova erweckte ihnen einen Retter, Ehud, den Sohn Geras, einen Benjaminiter, einen Mann, der links war. Und die Kinder Israel sandten durch ihn ein Geschenk an Eglon, den König von Moab.

But when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. And the children of Israel sent tribute by him unto Eglon the king of Moab.

Und Ehud machte sich ein Schwert, das zwei Schneiden hatte, eine Elle seine Länge; und er gürtete es unter seinen Rock an seine rechte Hüfte.

And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

Und er überreichte das Geschenk Eglon, dem König von Moab. Eglon war aber ein sehr fetter Mann.

And he offered the tribute unto Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man.

Und es geschah, als er mit der Überreichung des Geschenkes fertig war, da geleitete er das Volk, welches das Geschenk getragen hatte.

And when he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people that bare the tribute.

Er selbst aber kehrte um von den geschnitzten Bildern, die bei Gilgal waren, und sprach: Ein geheimes Wort habe ich an dich, o König! Und er sprach: Stille! Und alle, die bei ihm standen, gingen von ihm hinaus.

But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king. And he said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

Und als Ehud zu ihm hereinkam, saß er in dem Obergemach der Kühlung, das für ihn allein war. Und Ehud sprach: Ein Wort Gottes habe ich an dich. Und er stand auf vom Stuhle.

And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

Da streckte Ehud seine linke Hand aus und nahm das Schwert von seiner rechten Hüfte und stieß es ihm in den Bauch;

And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:

und es drang sogar der Griff hinein nach der Klinge, und das Fett schloß sich um die Klinge; denn er zog das Schwert nicht aus seinem Bauche, und es fuhr hinaus zwischen den Beinen.

and the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.

Und Ehud ging in die Säulenhalle hinaus und schloß die Tür des Obergemachs hinter ihm zu und verriegelte sie.

Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room upon him, and locked them.

Und als er hinausgegangen war, da kamen seine Knechte und sahen, und siehe, die Tür des Obergemachs war verriegelt. Und sie sprachen: Gewiß bedeckt er seine Füße in dem Gemach der Kühlung.

Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, Surely he is covering his feet in the upper chamber.

Und sie warteten, bis sie sich schämten; aber siehe, er öffnete die Tür des Obergemachs nicht; da nahmen sie den Schlüssel und schlossen auf, und siehe, ihr Herr lag tot am Boden. -

And they tarried till they were ashamed; and, behold, he opened not the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened [them], and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

Ehud aber war entronnen, während sie zögerten: er war über die geschnitzten Bilder hinausgelangt und entrann nach Seira.

And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah.

Und es geschah, als er ankam, da stieß er in die Posaune auf dem Gebirge Ephraim; und die Kinder Israel zogen mit ihm von dem Gebirge hinab, und er vor ihnen her.

And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them.

Und er sprach zu ihnen: Jaget mir nach, denn Jehova hat eure Feinde, die Moabiter, in eure Hand gegeben! Und sie zogen hinab, ihm nach, und nahmen den Moabitern die Furten des Jordan, und ließen niemand hinübergehen.

And he said unto them, Follow after me; for Jehovah hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over.

Und sie schlugen die Moabiter zu selbiger Zeit, bei zehntausend Mann, lauter kräftige und streitbare Männer, und keiner entrann.

And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man.

Und Moab wurde an selbigem Tage unter die Hand Israels gebeugt. Und das Land hatte Ruhe achtzig Jahre.

So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

Und nach ihm war Schamgar, der Sohn Anaths; und er schlug die Philister, sechshundert Mann, mit einem Rinderstachel. Und auch er rettete Israel.

And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox-goad: and he also saved Israel.

Kapitel 4

Und die Kinder Israel taten wiederum, was böse war in den Augen Jehovas; und Ehud war gestorben.

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, when Ehud was dead.

Da verkaufte sie Jehova in die Hand Jabins, des Königs der Kanaaniter, der zu Hazor regierte; und sein Heeroberster war Sisera, und er wohnte zu Haroscheth-Gojim.

And Jehovah sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.

Und die Kinder Israel schrieen zu Jehova; denn er hatte neunhundert eiserne Wagen, und er bedrückte die Kinder Israel mit Gewalt zwanzig Jahre.

And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

Und Debora, eine Prophetin, das Weib Lappidoths, richtete Israel in selbiger Zeit.

Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, she judged Israel at that time.

Und sie wohnte unter der Debora-Palme zwischen Rama und Bethel, auf dem Gebirge Ephraim; und die Kinder Israel gingen zu ihr hinauf zu Gericht.

And she dwelt under the palm-tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in the hill-country of Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.

Und sie sandte hin und ließ Barak, den Sohn Abinoams, von Kedes-Naphtali, rufen; und sie sprach zu ihm: Hat nicht Jehova, der Gott Israels, geboten: Gehe hin und ziehe auf den Berg Tabor, und nimm mit dir zehntausend Mann von den Kindern Naphtali und von den Kindern Sebulon;

And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded, [saying], Go and draw unto mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?

und ich werde Sisera, den Heerobersten Jabins, zu dir ziehen an den Bach Kison samt seinen Wagen und seiner Menge, und ich werde ihn in deine Hand geben?

And I will draw unto thee, to the river Kishon, Sisera, the captain of Jabin`s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thy hand.

Und Barak sprach zu ihr: Wenn du mit mir gehst, so gehe ich; wenn du aber nicht mit mir gehst, so gehe ich nicht:

And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go; but if thou wilt not go with me, I will not go.

Da sprachen sie: Ich will wohl mit dir gehen; nur daß die Ehre nicht dein sein wird auf dem Wege, den du gehst, denn in die Hand eines Weibes wird Jehova den Sisera verkaufen. Und Debora machte sich auf und ging mit Barak nach Kedes.

And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding, the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honor; for Jehovah will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

Und Barak berief Sebulon und Naphtali nach Kedes; und zehntausend Mann zogen in seinem Gefolge hinauf; auch Debora zog mit ihm hinauf.

And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh; and there went up ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.

(Heber aber, der Keniter, hatte sich von den Kenitern, den Kindern Hobabs, des Schwagers Moses, getrennt; und er hatte seine Zelte aufgeschlagen bis an die Terebinthe zu Zaanannim, das neben Kedes liegt.)

Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, even from the children of Hobab the brother-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far as the oak in Zaanannim, which is by Kedesh.

Und man berichtete dem Sisera, daß Barak, der Sohn Abinoams, auf den Berg Tabor hinaufgezogen wäre.

And they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor.

Da berief Sisera alle seine Wagen, neunhundert eiserne Wagen, und alles Volk, das mit ihm war, von Haroscheth-Gojim an den Bach Kison.

And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles, unto the river Kishon.

Und Debora sprach zu Barak: Mache dich auf! denn dies ist der Tag, da Jehova den Sisera in deine Hand gegeben hat. Ist nicht Jehova ausgezogen vor dir her? Und Barak stieg von dem Berge Tabor hinab, und zehntausend Mann ihm nach.

And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which Jehovah hath delivered Sisera into thy hand; is not Jehovah gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.

Und Jehova verwirrte Sisera und alle seine Wagen und das ganze Heerlager durch die Schärfe des Schwertes vor Barak her; und Sisera stieg von dem Wagen herab und floh zu Fuß.

And Jehovah discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot, and fled away on his feet.

Barak aber jagte den Wagen und dem Heere nach bis Haroscheth-Gojim; und das ganze Heer Siseras fiel durch die Schärfe des Schwertes: Es blieb auch nicht einer übrig.

But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; there was not a man left.

Und Sisera floh zu Fuß in das Zelt Jaels, des Weibes Hebers, des Keniters; denn es war Friede zwischen Jabin, dem König von Hazor, und dem Hause Hebers, des Keniters.

Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

Da ging Jael hinaus, dem Sisera entgegen; und sie sprach zu ihm: Kehre ein, mein Herr, kehre ein zu mir, fürchte dich nicht! Und er kehrte ein zu ihr in das Zelt, und sie bedeckte ihn mit einer Decke.

And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And he turned in unto her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.

Und er sprach zu ihr: Laß mich doch ein wenig Wasser trinken, denn mich dürstet. Und sie öffnete den Milchschlauch und ließ ihn trinken, und sie deckte ihn zu.

And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.

Und er sprach zu ihr: Stelle dich an den Eingang des Zeltes; und es geschehe, wenn jemand kommt und dich fragt und spricht: Ist jemand hier? So sage: Niemand.

And he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and inquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No.

Und Jael, das Weib Hebers, nahm einen Zeltpflock und faßte den Hammer in ihre Hand, und sie kam leise zu ihm und schlug den Pflock durch seine Schläfe, daß er in die Erde drang. Er war nämlich in einen tiefen Schlaf gefallen und war ermattet, und er starb.

Then Jael Heber`s wife took a tent-pin, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground; for he was in a deep sleep; so he swooned and died.

Und siehe, da kam Barak, der Sisera verfolgte; und Jael ging hinaus, ihm entgegen, und sprach zu ihm: Komm, ich will dir den Mann zeigen, den du suchst! Und er ging zu ihr hinein, und siehe, Sisera lag tot, und der Pflock war in seiner Schläfe.

And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will show thee the man whom thou seekest. And he came unto her; and, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the tent-pin was in his temples.

So beugte Gott an selbigem Tage Jabin, den König von Kanaan, vor den Kindern Israel.

So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.

Und die Hand der Kinder Israel wurde fort und fort härter über Jabin, den König von Kanaan, bis sie Jabin, den König von Kanaan, vernichtet hatten.

And the hand of the children of Israel prevailed more and more against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

Kapitel 5

Und Debora und Barak, der Sohn Abinoams, sangen an selbigem Tage und sprachen:

Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying,

Weil Führer führten in Israel, weil freiwillig sich stellte das Volk, preiset Jehova!

For that the leaders took the lead in Israel, For that the people offered themselves willingly, Bless ye Jehovah.

Höret, ihr Könige; horchet auf, ihr Fürsten! Ich will, ja, ich will Jehova singen, will singen und spielen Jehova, dem Gott Israels!

Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, [even] I, will sing unto Jehovah; I will sing praise to Jehovah, the God of Israel.

Jehova! als du auszogest von Seir, als du einherschrittest vom Gefilde Edoms, da erzitterte die Erde; auch troffen die Himmel, auch troffen die Wolken von Wasser.

Jehovah, when thou wentest forth out of Seir, When thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, The earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, Yea, the clouds dropped water.

Die Berge erbebten vor Jehova, jener Sinai vor Jehova, dem Gott Israels.

The mountains quaked at the presence of Jehovah, Even yon Sinai at the presence of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

In den Tagen Schamgars, des Sohnes Anaths, in den Tagen Jaels feierten die Pfade, und die Wanderer betretener Wege gingen krumme Pfade.

In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, In the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, And the travellers walked through byways.

Es feierten die Landstädte in Israel, sie feierten, bis ich, Debora, aufstand, bis ich aufstand, eine Mutter in Israel.

The rulers ceased in Israel, they ceased, Until that I Deborah arose, That I arose a mother in Israel.

Es erwählte neue Götter; da war Streit an den Toren! Ward wohl Schild und Lanze gesehen unter 40000 in Israel?

They chose new gods; Then was war in the gates: Was there a shield or spear seen Among forty thousand in Israel?

Mein Herz gehört den Führern Israels, denen, die sich freiwillig stellten im Volke. Preiset Jehova!

My heart is toward the governors of Israel, That offered themselves willingly among the people: Bless ye Jehovah.

Die ihr reitet auf weißroten Eselinnen, die ihr sitzet auf Teppichen, und die ihr wandelt auf dem Wege, singet!

Tell [of it], ye that ride on white asses, Ye that sit on rich carpets, And ye that walk by the way.

Fern von der Stimme der Bogenschützen, zwischen den Schöpfrinnen, dort sollen sie preisen die gerechten Taten Jehovas, die gerechten Taten an seinen Landstädten in Israel. Da zog das Volk Jehovas hinab zu den Toren.

Far from the noise of archers, in the places of drawing water, There shall they rehearse the righteous acts of Jehovah, [Even] the righteous acts of his rule in Israel. Then the people of Jehovah went down to the gates.

Wache auf, wache auf, Debora! Wache auf, wache auf, sprich ein Lied! Mache dich auf, Barak, und führe gefangen deine Gefangenen, Sohn Abinoams!

Awake, awake, Deborah; Awake, awake, utter a song: Arise, Barak, and lead away thy captives, thou son of Abinoam.

Da zog hinab ein Überrest der Edlen und des Volkes; Jehova zog zu mir herab unter den Helden.

Then came down a remnant of the nobles [and] the people; Jehovah came down for me against the mighty.

Von Ephraim zogen hinab, deren Stammsitz unter Amalek ist; hinter dir her Benjamin, unter deinen Völkern; von Makir zogen hinab die Führer, und von Sebulon, die den Feldherrnstab halten.

Out of Ephraim [came down] they whose root is in Amalek; After thee, Benjamin, among thy peoples; Out of Machir came down governors, And out of Zebulun they that handle the marshal`s staff.

Und die Fürsten in Issaschar waren mit Debora; und Issaschar gleich Barak; er wurde seinen Füßen nach ins Tal gesandt. An den Bächen Rubens waren große Beschlüsse des Herzens.

And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; As was Issachar, so was Barak; Into the valley they rushed forth at his feet. By the watercourses of Reuben There were great resolves of heart.

Warum bliebest du zwischen den Hürden, das Flöten bei den Herden zu hören? An den Bächen Rubens waren große Beratungen des Herzens.

Why sattest thou among the sheepfolds, To hear the pipings for the flocks? At the watercourses of Reuben There were great searchings of heart.

Gilead ruhte jenseit des Jordan; und Dan, warum weilte er auf Schiffen? Aser blieb am Gestade des Meeres, und an seinen Buchten ruhte er.

Gilead abode beyond the Jordan: And Dan, why did he remain in ships? Asher sat still at the haven of the sea, And abode by his creeks.

Sebulon ist ein Volk, das seine Seele dem Tode preisgab, auch Naphtali auf den Höhen des Gefildes.

Zebulun was a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death, And Naphtali, upon the high places of the field.

Könige kamen, sie stritten; da stritten die Könige Kanaans zu Taanak an den Wassern Megiddos: Beute an Silber trugen sie nicht davon.

The kings came and fought; Then fought the kings of Canaan. In Taanach by the waters of Megiddo: They took no gain of money.

Vom Himmel her stritten, von ihren Bahnen aus stritten die Sterne mit Sisera.

From heaven fought the stars, From their courses they fought against Sisera.

Der Bach Kison riß sie hinweg, der Bach der Urzeit, der Bach Kison. Du, meine Seele, tratest die Starken nieder!

The river Kishon swept them away, That ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, march on with strength.

Da stampften die Hufe der Rosse vom Rennen, dem Rennen ihrer Gewaltigen.

Then did the horsehoofs stamp By reason of the prancings, the prancings of their strong ones.

Fluchet Meros! spricht der Engel Jehovas, verfluchet seine Bewohner! Denn sie sind nicht Jehova zu Hilfe gekommen, Jehova zu Hilfe unter den Helden.

Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of Jehovah. Curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof, Because they came not to the help of Jehovah, To the help of Jehovah against the mighty.

Gesegnet vor Weibern sei Jael, das Weib Hebers, des Keniters, vor Weibern in Zelten gesegnet!

Blessed above women shall Jael be, The wife of Heber the Kenite; Blessed shall she be above women in the tent.

Wasser verlangte er, Milch gab sie; in einer Schale der Edlen reichte sie geronnene Milch.

He asked water, [and] she gave him milk; She brought him butter in a lordly dish.

Ihre Hand streckte sie aus nach dem Pflocke und ihre Rechte nach dem Hammer der Arbeiter; und sie hämmerte auf Sisera, zerschmetterte sein Haupt und zerschlug und durchbohrte seine Schläfe.

She put her hand to the tent-pin, And her right hand to the workmen`s hammer; And with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote through his head; Yea, she pierced and struck through his temples.

Zwischen ihren Füßen krümmte er sich, fiel, lag da; zwischen ihren Füßen krümmte er sich, fiel; da, wo er sich krümmte, fiel er überwältigt.

At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay; At her feet he bowed, he fell; Where he bowed, there he fell down dead.

Durchs Fenster schaute aus Siseras Mutter und rief ängstlich durch das Gitter: warum zaudert sein Wagen zu kommen? Warum zögern die Tritte seiner Gespanne?

Through the window she looked forth, and cried, The mother of Sisera [cried] through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarry the wheels of his chariots?

Die Klugen unter ihren Edelfrauen antworten ihr, und sie selbst erwidert sich ihre Reden:

Her wise ladies answered her, Yea, she returned answer to herself,

Finden sie nicht, teilen sie nicht Beute? ein Mädchen, zwei Mädchen auf den Kopf eines Mannes? Beute an bunten Gewändern für Sisera, Beute an buntgewirkten Gewändern; zwei buntgewirkte Gewänder für den Hals der Gefangenen. -

Have they not found, have they not divided the spoil? A damsel, two damsels to every man; To Sisera a spoil of dyed garments, A spoil of dyed garments embroidered, Of dyed garments embroidered on both sides, on the necks of the spoil?

Also mögen umkommen alle deine Feinde, Jehova! aber die ihn lieben, seien wie die Sonne aufgeht in ihrer Kraft! - Und das Land hatte Ruhe vierzig Jahre.

So let all thine enemies perish, O Jehovah: But let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

Kapitel 6

Und die Kinder Israel taten, was böse war in den Augen Jehovas; und Jehova gab sie in die Hand Midians sieben Jahre.

And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

Und die Hand Midians wurde stark über Israel. Vor Midian richteten sich die Kinder Israel die Klüfte zu, die in den Bergen sind, und die Höhlen und die Bergfesten.

And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

Und es geschah, wenn Israel gesät hatte, so zogen Midian und Amalek und die Söhne des Ostens herauf, sie zogen herauf wider sie.

And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

Und sie lagerten sich wider sie und verdarben den Ertrag des Landes bis nach Gasa hin; und sie ließen keine Lebensmittel in Israel übrig, weder Kleinvieh, noch Rind, noch Esel.

and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

Denn sie zogen herauf mit ihren Herden und mit ihren Zelten, sie kamen wie die Heuschrecken an Menge; und ihrer und ihrer Kamele war keine Zahl; und sie kamen in das Land, um es zu verderben.

For they came up with their cattle and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.

Und Israel verarmte sehr wegen Midians; und die Kinder Israel schrieen zu Jehova.

And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah.

Und es geschah, als die Kinder Israel wegen Midians zu Jehova schrieen,

And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah because of Midian,

da sandte Jehova einen Propheten zu den Kindern Israel; und er sprach zu ihnen: So spricht Jehova, der Gott Israels: Ich habe euch aus Ägypten heraufgeführt und euch herausgeführt aus dem Hause der Knechtschaft;

that Jehovah sent a prophet unto the children of Israel: and he said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

und ich habe euch errettet aus der Hand der Ägypter und aus der Hand all eurer Bedrücker, und ich habe sie vor euch vertrieben und euch ihr Land gegeben.

and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;

Und ich sprach zu euch: Ich bin Jehova, euer Gott; ihr sollt nicht die Götter der Amoriter fürchten, in deren Land ihr wohnet. Aber ihr habt meiner Stimme nicht gehorcht.

and I said unto you, I am Jehovah your God; ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice.

Und der Engel Jehovas kam und setzte sich unter die Terebinthe, die zu Ophra war, welches Joas, dem Abieseriter, gehörte. Und Gideon, sein Sohn, schlug eben Weizen aus in der Kelter, um ihn vor Midian zu flüchten.

And the angel of Jehovah came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

Und der Engel Jehovas erschien ihm und sprach zu ihm: Jehova ist mit dir, du tapferer Held!

And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him, and said unto him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valor.

Und Gideon sprach zu ihm: Bitte, mein Herr! wenn Jehova mit uns ist, warum hat denn dieses alles uns betroffen? Und wo sind alle seine Wunder, die unsere Väter uns erzählt haben, indem sie sprachen: Hat Jehova uns nicht aus Ägypten heraufgeführt? Und nun hat Jehova uns verlassen und uns in die Hand Midians gegeben.

And Gideon said unto him, Oh, my lord, if Jehovah is with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? but now Jehovah hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.

Und Jehova wandte sich zu ihm und sprach: Gehe hin in dieser deiner Kraft und rette Israel aus der Hand Midians! Habe ich dich nicht gesandt?

And Jehovah looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian: have not I sent thee?

Und er sprach zu ihm: Bitte, mein Herr! womit soll ich Israel retten? Siehe, mein Tausend ist das ärmste in Manasse, und ich bin der Jüngste im Hause meines Vaters.

And he said unto him, Oh, Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father`s house.

Und Jehova sprach zu ihm: Ich werde mit dir sein, und du wirst Midian schlagen wie einen Mann.

And Jehovah said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

Und er sprach zu ihm: Wenn ich denn Gnade gefunden habe in deinen Augen, so gib mir ein Zeichen, daß du es bist, der mit mir redet.

And he said unto him, If now I have found favor in thy sight, then show me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me.

Weiche doch nicht von hinnen, bis ich zu dir komme und meine Gabe herausbringe und dir vorsetze. Und er sprach: Ich will bleiben, bis du wiederkommst.

Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

Da ging Gideon hinein und bereitete ein Ziegenböcklein zu, und ungesäuerte Kuchen aus einem Epha Mehl; das Fleisch tat er in einen Korb, und die Brühe tat er in einen Topf; und er brachte es zu ihm heraus unter die Terebinthe und setzte es vor.

And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

Und der Engel Gottes sprach zu ihm: Nimm das Fleisch und die ungesäuerten Kuchen und lege es hin auf diesen Felsen da, und die Brühe gieße aus. Und er tat also.

And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

Und der Engel Jehovas streckte das Ende des Stabes aus, der in seiner Hand war, und berührte das Fleisch und die ungesäuerten Kuchen; da stieg Feuer auf aus dem Felsen und verzehrte das Fleisch und die ungesäuerten Kuchen. Und der Engel Jehovas verschwand aus seinen Augen.

Then the angel of Jehovah put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Jehovah departed out of his sight.

Da sah Gideon, daß es der Engel Jehovas war, und Gideon sprach: Ach Herr, Jehova! Dieweil ich den Engel Jehovas gesehen habe von Angesicht zu Angesicht!

And Gideon saw that he was the angel of Jehovah; and Gideon said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of Jehovah face to face.

Und Jehova sprach zu ihm: Friede dir! Fürchte dich nicht, du wirst nicht sterben.

And Jehovah said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

Und Gideon baute daselbst Jehova einen Altar und nannte ihn: Jehova-Schalom. Bis auf diesen Tag ist er noch zu Ophra der Abieseriter.

Then Gideon built an altar there unto Jehovah, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Und es geschah in selbiger Nacht, da sprach Jehova zu ihm: Nimm den Farren deines Vaters, und zwar den zweiten Farren von sieben Jahren; und reiße nieder den Altar des Baal, der deinem Vater gehört, und die Aschera, die bei demselben ist, haue um;

And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Take thy father`s bullock, even the second bullock seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;

und baue Jehova, deinem Gott, einen Altar auf dem Gipfel dieser Feste mit der Zurüstung; und nimm den zweiten Farren und opfere ein Brandopfer mit dem Holze der Aschera, die du umhauen wirst.

and build an altar unto Jehovah thy God upon the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which thou shalt cut down.

Und Gideon nahm zehn Männer von seinen Knechten und tat, so wie Jehova zu ihm geredet hatte. Und es geschah, da er sich vor dem Hause seines Vaters und vor den Leuten der Stadt fürchtete, es bei Tage zu tun, so tat er es bei Nacht.

Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Jehovah had spoken unto him: and it came to pass, because he feared his father`s household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

Und als die Leute der Stadt des Morgens früh aufstanden, siehe, da war der Altar des Baal umgerissen, und die Aschera, die bei demselben war, umgehauen, und der zweite Farre war als Brandopfer auf dem erbauten Altar geopfert.

And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

Und sie sprachen einer zum anderen: Wer hat das getan? Und sie forschten und fragten nach, und man sagte: Gideon, der Sohn des Joas, hat das getan.

And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

Da sprachen die Leute der Stadt zu Joas: Gib deinen Sohn heraus, daß er sterbe, weil er den Altar des Baal umgerissen, und weil er die Aschera, die bei demselben war, umgehauen hat!

Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the Asherah that was by it.

Und Joas sprach zu allen, die bei ihm standen: Wollt ihr für den Baal rechten, oder wollt ihr ihn retten? Wer für ihn rechtet, soll getötet werden bis zum Morgen. Wenn er ein Gott ist, so rechte er für sich selbst, weil man seinen Altar umgerissen hat.

And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye contend for Baal? Or will ye save him? he that will contend for him, let him be put to death whilst [it is yet] morning: if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one hath broken down his altar.

Und man nannte ihn an selbigem Tage Jerub-Baal, indem man sprach: Der Baal rechte mit ihm, weil er seinen Altar umgerissen hat.

Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal contend against him, because he hath broken down his altar.

Und ganz Midian und Amalek und die Söhne des Ostens versammelten sich allzumal, und sie setzten über den Jordan und lagerten sich im Tale Jisreel.

Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

Und der Geist Jehovas kam über Gideon; und er stieß in die Posaune, und die Abieseriter wurden zusammengerufen ihm nach.

But the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

Und er sandte Boten durch ganz Manasse, und auch sie wurden zusammengerufen, ihm nach. Und er sandte Boten durch Aser und durch Sebulon und durch Naphtali. Und sie zogen herauf, ihnen entgegen.

And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

Und Gideon sprach zu Gott: Wenn du Israel durch meine Hand retten willst, so wie du geredet hast -

And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken,

siehe, ich lege ein Wollvließ auf die Tenne; wenn Tau auf dem Vließe allein sein wird und auf dem ganzen Boden Trockenheit, so werde ich erkennen, daß du Israel durch meine Hand retten wirst, so wie du geredet hast.

behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken.

Und es geschah also. Und er stand am anderen Morgen früh auf, und er drückte das Vließ aus und preßte Tau aus dem Vließe, eine Schale voll Wasser.

And it was so; for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.

Und Gideon sprach zu Gott: Dein Zorn entbrenne nicht wider mich! Und ich will nur noch diesmal reden. Laß mich es doch nur noch diesmal mit dem Vließe versuchen: Möge doch Trockenheit sein auf dem Vließe allein, und auf dem ganzen Boden sei Tau.

And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me make trial, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

Und Gott tat also in selbiger Nacht; und es war Trockenheit auf dem Vließe allein, und auf dem ganzen Boden war Tau.

And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

Kapitel 7

Und Jerub-Baal, das ist Gideon, und alles Volk, das mit ihm war, machten sich früh auf, und sie lagerten sich an der Quelle Harod; das Lager Midians aber war nordwärts von ihm, nach dem Hügel More hin, im Tale.

Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod: and the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

Und Jehova sprach zu Gideon: Des Volkes, das bei dir ist, ist zu viel, als daß ich Midian in ihre Hand geben sollte; damit Israel sich nicht wider mich rühme und spreche: Meine Hand hat mich gerettet!

And Jehovah said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.

Und nun rufe doch vor den Ohren des Volkes aus und sprich: Wer furchtsam und verzagt ist, kehre um und wende sich zurück vom Gebirge Gilead! Da kehrten von dem Volke 22000 um, und 10000 blieben übrig.

Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.

Und Jehova sprach zu Gideon: Noch ist des Volkes zu viel; führe sie ans Wasser hinab, daß ich sie dir daselbst läutere; und es soll geschehen, von wem ich dir sagen werde: dieser soll mit dir ziehen, der soll mit dir ziehen; und jeder, von dem ich dir sagen werde: dieser soll nicht mit dir ziehen, der soll nicht ziehen.

And Jehovah said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

Und er führte das Volk ans Wasser hinab. Und Jehova sprach zu Gideon: Jeder, der mit seiner Zunge von dem Wasser leckt, wie ein Hund leckt, den stelle besonders; und auch jeden, der sich auf seine Knie niederläßt, um zu trinken.

So he brought down the people unto the water: and Jehovah said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.

Und die Zahl derer, welche mit ihrer Hand zu ihrem Munde leckten, war dreihundert Mann; und das ganze übrige Volk hatte sich auf seine Knie niedergelassen, um Wasser zu trinken.

And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.

Und Jehova sprach zu Gideon: Durch die dreihundert Mann, die geleckt haben, will ich euch retten und Midian in deine Hand geben; das ganze übrige Volk aber soll gehen, ein jeder an seinen Ort.

And Jehovah said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand; and let all the people go every man unto his place.

Und sie nahmen die Zehrung des Volkes mit sich und seine Posaunen. Und er entließ alle Männer von Israel, einen jeden nach seinen Zelten; aber die dreihundert Mann behielt er. Das Lager Midians war aber unter ihm im Tale.

So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man unto his tent, but retained the three hundred men: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

Und es geschah in selbiger Nacht, da sprach Jehova zu ihm: Mache dich auf, gehe in das Lager hinab; denn ich habe es in deine Hand gegeben.

And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Arise, get thee down into the camp; for I have delivered it into thy hand.

Und wenn du dich fürchtest, hinabzugehen, so gehe mit Pura, deinem Knaben, zum Lager hinab;

But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Purah thy servant down to the camp:

und du wirst hören, was sie reden; und danach werden deine Hände erstarken, und du wirst in das Lager hinabgehen. Da ging er mit Pura, seinem Knaben, hinab bis an das Ende der Gerüsteten, die im Lager waren.

and thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thy hands be strengthened to go down into the camp. Then went he down with Purah his servant unto the outermost part of the armed men that were in the camp.

Und Midian und Amalek und alle Söhne des Ostens lagen im Tale, wie die Heuschrecken an Menge; und ihrer Kamele war keine Zahl, wie der Sand, der am Ufer des Meeres ist, an Menge.

And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is upon the sea-shore for multitude.

Und Gideon kam, und siehe, ein Mann erzählte seinem Genossen einen Traum und sprach: Siehe, ich habe einen Traum gehabt; und siehe, ein Laib Gerstenbrot rollte in das Lager Midians; und es kam bis zum Zelte und schlug es, daß es umfiel, und kehrte es um, das Unterste zu oberst, und das Zelt lag da.

And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man telling a dream unto his fellow; and he said, Behold, I dreamed a dream; and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came unto the tent, and smote it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.

Und sein Genosse antwortete und sprach: Das ist nichts anderes als das Schwert Gideons, des Sohnes Joas', eines Mannes von Israel; Gott hat Midian und das ganze Lager in seine Hand gegeben.

And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: into his hand God hath delivered Midian, and all the host.

Und es geschah, als Gideon die Erzählung des Traumes und seine Deutung hörte, da betete er an. Und er kehrte in das Lager Israels zurück und sprach: Machet euch auf! Denn Jehova hat das Lager Midians in eure Hand gegeben.

And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped; and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, Arise; for Jehovah hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.

Und er teilte die dreihundert Mann in drei Haufen und gab ihnen allen Posaunen in die Hand und leere Krüge, und Fackeln in die Krüge.

And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers.

Und er sprach zu ihnen: Sehet es mir ab und tut ebenso; siehe, wenn ich an das Ende des Lagers komme, so soll es geschehen, daß ihr ebenso tut, wie ich tue.

And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.

Und stoße ich in die Posaune, ich und alle, die bei mir sind, so sollt auch ihr in die Posaunen stoßen rings um das ganze Lager, und sollt rufen: Für Jehova und für Gideon!

When I blow the trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, For Jehovah and for Gideon.

Und Gideon und die hundert Mann, die bei ihm waren, kamen an das Ende des Lagers, beim Beginn der mittleren Nachtwache; man hatte eben die Wachen aufgestellt. Und sie stießen in die Posaunen und zerschmetterten die Krüge, die in ihrer Hand waren.

So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.

Und die drei Haufen stießen in die Posaunen und zerbrachen die Krüge; und sie hielten in ihrer linken Hand die Fackeln und in ihrer rechten Hand die Posaunen zum Blasen und riefen: Schwert Jehovas und Gideons!

And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands wherewith to blow; and they cried, The sword of Jehovah and of Gideon.

Und sie standen ein jeder an seiner Stelle, rings um das Lager. Da lief das ganze Lager und schrie und floh.

And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran; and they shouted, and put [them] to flight.

Und sie stießen in die dreihundert Posaunen; und Jehova richtete das Schwert des einen wider den anderen, und zwar im ganzen Lager. Und das Lager floh bis Beth-Schitta, nach Zerera hin, bis an das Ufer von Abel-Mehola bei Tabbath.

And they blew the three hundred trumpets, and Jehovah set every man`s sword against his fellow, and against all the host; and the host fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.

Und es versammelten sich die Männer von Israel, von Naphtali und von Aser und von ganz Manasse, und sie jagten Midian nach.

And the men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian.

Und Gideon sandte Boten in das ganze Gebirge Ephraim und ließ sagen: Kommet herab, Midian entgegen, und nehmet ihnen die Gewässer bis Beth-Bara, und den Jordan! Da versammelten sich alle Männer von Ephraim und nahmen ihnen die Gewässer bis Beth-Bara und den Jordan.

And Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill-country of Ephraim, saying, Come down against Midian, and take before them the waters, as far as Beth-barah, even the Jordan. So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth-barah, even the Jordan.

Und sie fingen die zwei Fürsten von Midian, Oreb und Seeb; und sie erschlugen Oreb an dem Felsen Oreb, und Seeb erschlugen sie bei der Kelter Seeb; und sie jagten Midian nach. Und die Köpfe Orebs und Seebs brachten sie zu Gideon auf die andere Seite des Jordan.

And they took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.

Kapitel 8

Und die Männer von Ephraim sprachen zu ihm: Was ist das für eine Sache, die du uns getan, daß du uns nicht gerufen hast, als du hinzogest, um wider Midian zu streiten! Und sie zankten heftig mit ihm.

And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him sharply.

Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was habe ich nun getan im Vergleich mit euch? Ist nicht die Nachlese Ephraims besser als die Weinlese Abiesers?

And he said unto them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

In eure Hand hat Gott die Fürsten von Midian, Oreb und Seeb gegeben; und was habe ich tun können im Vergleich mit euch? Da ließ ihr Zorn von ihm ab, als er dieses Wort redete.

God hath delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

Und Gideon kam an den Jordan; er ging hinüber, er und die dreihundert Mann, die bei ihm waren, ermattet und nachjagend.

And Gideon came to the Jordan, [and] passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing.

Und er sprach zu den Männern von Sukkoth: Gebet doch dem Volke, das mir nachfolgt, einige Laibe Brot; denn sie sind ermattet, und ich jage den Königen von Midian, Sebach und Zalmunna, nach.

And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.

Und die Obersten von Sukkoth sprachen: Ist die Faust Sebachs und Zalmunnas schon in deiner Hand, daß wir deinem Heere Brot geben sollen?

And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

Da sprach Gideon: Darum, wenn Jehova Sebach und Zalmunna in meine Hand gegeben hat, werde ich euer Fleisch zerdreschen mit Dornen der Wüste und mit Stechdisteln!

And Gideon said, Therefore when Jehovah hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

Und er zog von dannen nach Pnuel hinauf und redete zu ihnen auf dieselbe Weise. Und die Männer von Pnuel antworteten ihm, wie die Männer von Sukkoth geantwortet hatten.

And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them in like manner; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.

Da sprach er auch zu den Männern von Pnuel und sagte: Wenn ich in Frieden zurückkomme, so werde ich diesen Turm niederreißen!

And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

Sebach und Zalmunna waren aber zu Karkor, und ihre Heere mit ihnen, bei 15000 Mann, alle, die übriggeblieben waren von dem ganzen Lager der Söhne des Ostens; und der Gefallenen waren 120000 Mann, die das Schwert zogen.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the host of the children of the east; for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

Und Gideon zog hinauf des Weges zu den Zeltbewohnern, östlich von Nobach und Jogbeha; und er schlug das Lager, und das Lager war sorglos.

And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.

Und Sebach und Zalmunna flohen, und er jagte ihnen nach; und er fing die beiden Könige von Midian, Sebach und Zalmunna; und das ganze Lager setzte er in Schrecken.

And Zebah and Zalmunna fled; and he pursued after them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

Und Gideon, der Sohn Joas', kehrte aus dem Streite zurück, von der Anhöhe Heres herab.

And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.

Und er fing einen Jüngling von den Männern von Sukkoth und befragte ihn; und dieser schrieb ihm die Obersten von Sukkoth und seine Ältesten auf, 77 Mann.

And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy and seven men.

Und er kam zu den Männern von Sukkoth und sprach: Sehet hier Sebach und Zalmunna, über welche ihr mich verhöhnt habt, indem ihr sprachet: Ist die Faust Sebachs und Zalmunnas schon in deiner Hand, daß wir deinen Männern, die ermattet sind, Brot geben sollen?

And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom ye did taunt me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

Und er nahm die Ältesten der Stadt und Dornen der Wüste und Stechdisteln, und er züchtigte die Männer von Sukkoth mit denselben.

And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

Und den Turm zu Pnuel riß er nieder und erschlug die Männer der Stadt.

And he brake down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

Und er sprach zu Sebach und zu Zalmunna: Wie waren die Männer, die ihr zu Tabor erschlagen habt? Und sie sprachen: Wie du, so waren sie, ein jeder an Gestalt gleich einem Königssohne.

Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

Und er sprach: Das waren meine Brüder, die Söhne meiner Mutter. So wahr Jehova lebt, wenn ihr sie am Leben gelassen hättet, so erschlüge ich euch nicht!

And he said, They were my brethren, the sons of my mother: as Jehovah liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

Und er sprach zu Jether, seinem Erstgeborenen: Stehe auf, erschlage sie! Aber der Knabe zog sein Schwert nicht; denn er fürchtete sich, weil er noch ein Knabe war.

And he said unto Jether his first-born, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

Da sprachen Sebach und Zalmunna: Stehe du auf und stoße uns nieder; denn wie der Mann, so seine Kraft. Und Gideon stand auf und erschlug Sebach und Zalmunna; und er nahm die Halbmonde, welche an den Hälsen ihrer Kamele waren.

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels` necks.

Und die Männer von Israel sprachen zu Gideon: Herrsche über uns, sowohl du, als auch dein Sohn und deines Sohnes Sohn; denn du hast uns aus der Hand Midians gerettet.

Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son`s son also; for thou hast saved us out of the hand of Midian.

Und Gideon sprach zu ihnen: Nicht ich will über euch herrschen, und nicht mein Sohn soll über euch herrschen; Jehova soll über euch herrschen.

And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: Jehovah shall rule over you.

Und Gideon sprach zu ihnen: Eine Bitte will ich von euch erbitten: Gebet mir ein jeder sie Ohrringe seiner Beute! (denn sie hatten goldene Ohrringe, weil sie Ismaeliter waren).

And Gideon said unto them, I would make a request of you, that ye would give me every man the ear-rings of his spoil. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

Und sie sprachen: Gern wollen wir sie geben. Und sie breiteten ein Oberkleid aus und warfen darauf ein jeder die Ohrringe seiner Beute.

And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the ear-rings of his spoil.

Und das Gewicht der goldenen Ohrringe, die er erbeten hatte, war 1700 Sekel Gold, außer den Halbmonden und den Ohrgehängen und den Purpurkleidern, welche die Könige von Midian trugen, und außer den Halsketten, die an den Hälsen ihrer Kamele waren.

And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels` necks.

Und Gideon machte daraus ein Ephod und stellte es in seiner Stadt auf, in Ophra. Und ganz Israel hurte demselben dort nach; und es wurde Gideon und seinem Hause zum Fallstrick.

And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel played the harlot after it there; and it became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

So wurde Midian vor den Kindern Israels gebeugt, und es hob sein Haupt nicht mehr empor. Und das Land hatte in den Tagen Gideons Ruhe vierzig Jahre.

So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

Und Jerub-Baal, der Sohn Joas', ging hin und wohnte in seinem Hause.

And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

Und Gideon hatte siebzig Söhne, die aus seiner Lende hervorgegangen waren; denn er hatte viele Weiber.

And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten; for he had many wives.

Und sein Kebsweib, das zu Sichem war, auch sie gebar ihm einen Sohn; und er gab ihm den Namen Abimelech.

And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, and he called his name Abimelech.

Und Gideon, der Sohn Joas', starb in gutem Alter; und er wurde begraben im Grabe seines Vaters Joas, zu Ophra der Abieseriter.

And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Und es geschah, als Gideon tot war, da hurten die Kinder Israel wiederum den Baalim nach und machten sich den Baal-Berith zum Gott.

And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and played the harlot after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.

Und die Kinder Israel gedachten nicht Jehovas, ihres Gottes, der sie errettet hatte aus der Hand aller ihrer Feinde ringsum.

And the children of Israel remembered not Jehovah their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side;

Und sie erwiesen keine Güte an dem Hause Jerub-Baal-Gideons, nach all dem Guten, das er an Israel getan hatte.

neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, [who is] Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel.

Kapitel 9

Und Abimelech, der Sohn Jerub-Baals, ging nach Sichem zu den Brüdern seiner Mutter; und er redete zu ihnen und zu dem ganzen Geschlecht des Hauses des Vaters seiner Mutter und sprach:

And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother`s brethren, and spake with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother`s father, saying,

Redet doch vor den Ohren aller Bürger von Sichem: Was ist besser für euch, daß siebzig Männer über euch herrschen, alle Söhne Jerub-Baals, oder daß ein Mann über euch herrsche? und bedenket, daß ich euer Gebein und euer Fleisch bin.

Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are threescore and ten persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

Und die Brüder seiner Mutter redeten von ihm vor den Ohren aller Bürger von Sichem alle diese Worte. Und ihr Herz neigte sich Abimelech nach; denn sie sprachen: Er ist unser Bruder.

And his mother`s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

Und sie gaben ihm siebzig Sekel Silber aus dem Hause Baal-Berith; und Abimelech dingte damit lose und übermütige Männer, und sie folgten ihm nach.

And they gave him threescore and ten [pieces] of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.

Und er kam in das Haus seines Vaters, nach Ophra, und ermordete seine Brüder, die Söhne Jerub-Baals, siebzig Mann auf einem Steine; aber Jotham, der jüngste Sohn Jerub-Baals, blieb übrig, denn er hatte sich versteckt.

And he went unto his father`s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

Und alle Bürger von Sichem und das ganze Haus Millo versammelten sich und gingen hin und machten Abimelech zum König bei der Terebinthe des Denkmals, die zu Sichem ist.

And all the men of Shechem assembled themselves together, and all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.

Und man berichtete es Jotham. Da ging er hin und stellte sich auf den Gipfel des Berges Gerisim, und er erhob seine Stimme und rief und sprach zu ihnen: Höret auf mich, Bürger von Sichem, so wird Gott auf euch hören!

And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

Einst gingen die Bäume hin, einen König über sich zu salben; und sie sprachen zum Olivenbaum: Sei König über uns!

The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree, Reign thou over us.

Und der Olivenbaum sprach zu ihnen: Sollte ich meine Fettigkeit aufgeben, welche Götter und Menschen an mir preisen, und sollte hingehen, zu schweben über den Bäumen?

But the olive-tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

Da sprachen die Bäume zum Feigenbaum: Komm du, sei König über uns!

And the trees said to the fig-tree, Come thou, and reign over us.

Und der Feigenbaum sprach zu ihnen: Sollte ich meine Süßigkeit aufgeben und meine gute Frucht, und sollte hingehen, zu schweben über den Bäumen?

But the fig-tree said unto them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

Da sprachen die Bäume zum Weinstock: Komm du, sei König über uns!

And the trees said unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

Und der Weinstock sprach zu ihnen: Sollte ich meinen Most aufgeben, der Götter und Menschen erfreut, und sollte hingehen, zu schweben über den Bäumen?

And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

Da sprachen alle Bäume zum Dornstrauch: Komm du, sei König über uns!

Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

Und der Dornstrauch sprach zu den Bäumen: Wenn ihr mich in Wahrheit zum König über euch salben wollt, so kommet, vertrauet euch meinem Schatten an; wenn aber nicht, so soll Feuer von dem Dornstrauch ausgehen und die Zedern des Libanon verzehren. -

And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

Und nun, wenn ihr in Wahrheit und in Redlichkeit gehandelt habt, daß ihr Abimelech zum König gemacht, und wenn ihr Gutes getan habt an Jerub-Baal und an seinem Hause, und wenn ihr ihm getan habt nach dem Tun seiner Hände, -

Now therefore, if ye have dealt truly and uprightly, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands

denn mein Vater hat für euch gestritten und sein Leben dahingeworfen und euch aus der Hand Midians errettet;

(for my father fought for you, and adventured his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

ihr aber habt euch heute wider das Haus meines Vaters erhoben und seine Söhne ermordet, siebzig Mann auf einem Steine, und habt Abimelech, den Sohn seiner Magd, zum König gemacht über die Bürger von Sichem, weil er euer Bruder ist -

and ye are risen up against my father`s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);

wenn ihr also an diesem Tage in Wahrheit und in Redlichkeit an Jerub-Baal und an seinem Hause gehandelt habt, so freuet euch Abimelechs, und auch er möge sich euer freuen!

if ye then have dealt truly and uprightly with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

Wenn aber nicht, so gehe Feuer von Abimelech aus und verzehre die Bürger von Sichem und das Haus Millo; und es gehe ein Feuer aus von den Bürgern von Sichem und von dem Hause Millo und verzehre Abimelech!

but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

Und Jotham floh und entwich und ging nach Beer; und er blieb daselbst wegen seines Bruders Abimelech.

And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

Und Abimelech herrschte über Israel drei Jahre.

And Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.

Und Gott sandte einen bösen Geist zwischen Abimelech und die Bürger von Sichem; und die Bürger von Sichem handelten treulos gegen Abimelech,

And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

damit die Gewalttat an den siebzig Söhnen Jerub-Baals über ihn käme, und ihr Blut gelegt würde auf ihren Bruder Abimelech, der sie ermordet, und auf die Bürger von Sichem, die seine Hände gestärkt hatten, seine Brüder zu ermorden.

that the violence done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and upon the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.

Und die Bürger von Sichem legten einen Hinterhalt wider ihn auf die Gipfel der Berge, und sie beraubten jeden, der des Weges bei ihnen vorüberzog. Und es wurde dem Abimelech berichtet.

And the men of Shechem set liers-in-wait for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

Und Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, kam mit seinen Brüdern, und sie zogen durch Sichem; und die Bürger von Sichem vertrauten ihm.

And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.

Und sie gingen aufs Feld hinaus und lasen ihre Weinberge und kelterten; und sie hielten ein Dankfest und gingen in das Haus ihres Gottes und aßen und tranken und fluchten dem Abimelech.

And they went out into the field, and gathered their vineyards, and trod [the grapes], and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

Und Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, sprach: Wer ist Abimelech und wer Sichem, daß wir ihm dienen sollten? Ist er nicht der Sohn Jerub-Baals, und Sebul sein Statthalter? Dienet den Männern Hemors, des Vaters von Sichem! denn warum sollten wir ihm dienen?

And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve ye the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: but why should we serve him?

Hätte ich nur dieses Volk unter meiner Hand, so wollte ich Abimelech wegschaffen! Und er sprach von Abimelech: Mehre nur dein Heer und ziehe aus!

And would that this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

Und Sebul, der Oberste der Stadt, hörte die Worte Gaals, des Sohnes Ebeds, und sein Zorn entbrannte;

And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

und er sandte Boten an Abimelech mit List und sprach: Siehe, Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, und seine Brüder sind nach Sichem gekommen, und siehe, sie wiegeln die Stadt wider dich auf.

And he sent messengers unto Abimelech craftily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren are come to Shechem; and, behold, they constrain the city [to take part] against thee.

Und nun, mache dich in der Nacht auf, du und das Volk, das bei dir ist, und lege dich in Hinterhalt auf dem Felde.

Now therefore, up by night, thou and the people that are with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

Und es geschehe am Morgen, wenn die Sonne aufgeht, so mache dich früh auf und überfalle die Stadt; und siehe, wenn er und das Volk, das bei ihm ist, gegen dich hinausziehen, so tue ihm, wie deine Hand es finden wird.

and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and rush upon the city; and, behold, when he and the people that are with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

Und Abimelech und alles Volk, das mit ihm war, machten sich in der Nacht auf, und sie legten sich in vier Haufen gegen Sichem in Hinterhalt.

And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

Und Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, ging hinaus und trat an den Eingang des Stadttores. Da machten sich Abimelech und das Volk, das bei ihm war, aus dem Hinterhalt auf.

And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from the ambushment.

Und Gaal sah das Volk und sprach zu Sebul: Siehe, Volk kommt von den Gipfeln der Berge herab. Und Sebul sprach zu ihm: Den Schatten der Berge siehst du für Männer an.

And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the tops of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

Und Gaal redete wiederum und sprach: Siehe, Volk kommt von der Höhe des Landes herab, und ein Haufe kommt des Weges nach Elon-Meonenim.

And Gaal spake again and said, See, there come people down by the middle of the land, and one company cometh by the way of the oak of Meonenim.

Da sprach Sebul zu ihm: Wo ist nun dein Maul, da du sprachest: Wer ist Abimelech, daß wir ihm dienen sollten? Ist das nicht das Volk, welches du verachtet hast? Ziehe doch jetzt aus und streite wider ihn!

Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, that thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out now, I pray, and fight with them.

Und Gaal zog aus vor den Bürgern von Sichem und stritt wider Abimelech.

And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

Und Abimelech jagte ihm nach, und er floh vor ihm; und es fielen viele Erschlagene bis an den Eingang des Tores.

And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and there fell many wounded, even unto the entrance of the gate.

Und Abimelech blieb zu Aruma; und Sebul vertrieb Gaal und seine Brüder, so daß sie nicht mehr in Sichem blieben.

And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

Und es geschah am anderen Tage, da ging das Volk aufs Feld hinaus; und man berichtete es dem Abimelech.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

Und er nahm das Volk und teilte es in drei Haufen und legte sich in Hinterhalt auf dem Felde. Und er sah, und siehe, das Volk kam aus der Stadt heraus; und er erhob sich wider sie und schlug sie.

And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and, behold, the people came forth out of the city; And he rose up against them, and smote them.

Und Abimelech und die Haufen, die mit ihm waren, brachen hervor und stellten sich an den Eingang des Stadttores; und zwei der Haufen fielen über alle her, die auf dem Felde waren, und erschlugen sie.

And Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and the two companies rushed upon all that were in the field, and smote them.

Und Abimelech stritt wider die Stadt jenen ganzen Tag; und er nahm die Stadt ein, und das Volk, das darin war, tötete er; und er riß die Stadt nieder und bestreute sie mit Salz.

And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that were therein: and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

Und alle Bewohner des Turmes von Sichem hörten es, und sie gingen in die Burg des Hauses des Gottes Berith.

And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard thereof, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.

Und es wurde dem Abimelech berichtet, daß alle Bewohner des Turmes von Sichem sich versammelt hätten.

And it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

Da stieg Abimelech auf den Berg Zalmon, er und alles Volk, das bei ihm war; und Abimelech nahm eine Axt in seine Hand und hieb einen Baumast ab und hob ihn auf und legte ihn auf seine Schulter, und er sprach zu dem Volke, das mit ihm war: Was ihr gesehen habt, das ich getan habe, das tut eilends wie ich.

And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder: and he said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

Da hieb auch das ganze Volk ein jeder seinen Ast ab, und sie folgten Abimelech nach und legten sie an die Burg und zündeten die Burg über ihnen mit Feuer an. Und so starben auch alle Leute des Turmes von Sichem, bei tausend Männer und Weiber.

And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

Und Abimelech zog nach Tebez, und er belagerte Tebez und nahm es ein.

Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

Es war aber ein starker Turm mitten in der Stadt, und dahin flohen alle Männer und Weiber, alle Bürger der Stadt; und sie schlossen hinter sich zu und stiegen auf das Dach des Turmes.

But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut themselves in, and gat them up to the roof of the tower.

Und Abimelech kam an den Turm und stritt wider ihn; und er nahte zum Eingang des Turmes, um ihn mit Feuer zu verbrennen.

And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and drew near unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

Da warf ein Weib den oberen Stein einer Handmühle auf den Kopf Abimelechs und zerschmetterte ihm den Schädel.

And a certain woman cast an upper millstone upon Abimelech`s head, and brake his skull.

Und er rief eilends den Knaben, der seine Waffen trug, und sprach zu ihm: Ziehe dein Schwert und töte mich, daß man nicht von mir sage: Ein Weib hat ihn umgebracht! Und sein Knabe durchstach ihn, und er starb.

Then he called hastily unto the young man his armorbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and kill me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

Und als die Männer von Israel sahen, daß Abimelech tot war, da gingen sie ein jeder an seinen Ort.

And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

Und so brachte Gott die Bosheit Abimelechs, die er an seinem Vater verübt hatte, indem er seine siebzig Brüder ermordete, auf ihn zurück.

Thus God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren;

Und die ganze Bosheit der Männer von Sichem brachte Gott auf ihren Kopf zurück, und es kam über sie der Fluch Jothams, des Sohnes Jerub-Baals.

and all the wickedness of the men of Shechem did God requite upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Kapitel 10

Und nach Abimelech stand Tola auf, um Israel zu retten, der Sohn Puas, des Sohnes Dodos, ein Mann von Issaschar; und er wohnte zu Schamir im Gebirge Ephraim.

And after Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in the hill-country of Ephraim.

Und er richtete Israel 23 Jahre; und er starb und wurde zu Schamir begraben.

And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.

Und nach ihm stand Jair, der Gileaditer, auf; und er richtete Israel 22 Jahre.

And after him arose Jair, the Gileadite; and he judged Israel twenty and two years.

Und er hatte dreißig Söhne, die auf dreißig Eseln ritten, und sie hatten dreißig Städte; diese nennt man bis auf diesen Tag die Dörfer Jairs, welche im Lande Gilead sind.

And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havvoth-jair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead.

Und Jair starb und wurde zu Kamon begraben.

And Jair died, and was buried in Kamon.

Und die Kinder Israel taten wiederum, was böse war in den Augen Jehovas, und sie dienten den Baalim und den Astaroth, und den Göttern Syriens und den Göttern Zidons und den Göttern Moabs und den Göttern der Kinder Ammon und den Göttern der Philister; und sie verließen Jehova und dienten ihm nicht.

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim, and the Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Sidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook Jehovah, and served him not.

Da entbrannte der Zorn Jehovas wider Israel, und er verkaufte sie in die Hand der Philister und in die Hand der Kinder Ammon.

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the children of Ammon.

Und sie bedrückten und plagten die Kinder Israel in selbigem Jahre; achtzehn Jahre bedrückten sie alle Kinder Israel, welche jenseit des Jordan waren im Lande der Amoriter, das in Gilead ist.

And they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel that year: eighteen years [oppressed they] all the children of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.

Und die Kinder Ammon zogen über den Jordan, um auch wider Juda und wider Benjamin und wider das Haus Ephraim zu streiten; und Israel wurde sehr bedrängt.

And the children of Ammon passed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed.

Da schrieen die Kinder Israel zu Jehova und sprachen: Wir haben gegen dich gesündigt, und zwar weil wir unseren Gott verlassen und den Baalim gedient haben.

And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, saying, We have sinned against thee, even because we have forsaken our God, and have served the Baalim.

Und Jehova sprach zu den Kindern Israel: Habe ich euch nicht von den Ägyptern und von den Amoritern, von den Kindern Ammon und von den Philistern gerettet?

And Jehovah said unto the children of Israel, [Did] not [I save you] from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

und als die Zidonier und Amalekiter und Maoniter euch bedrückten, und ihr zu mir schrieet, euch aus ihrer Hand gerettet?

The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried unto me, and I saved you out of their hand.

Ihr aber habt mich verlassen und habt anderen Göttern gedient; darum werde ich euch nicht mehr retten.

Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will save you no more.

Gehet hin und schreiet zu den Göttern, die ihr erwählt habt: sie mögen euch retten zur Zeit eurer Bedrängnis!

Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.

Und die Kinder Israel sprachen zu Jehova: Wir haben gesündigt. Tue du uns nach allem, was gut ist in deinen Augen; nur errette uns doch an diesem Tage!

And the children of Israel said unto Jehovah, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; only deliver us, we pray thee, this day.

Und sie taten die fremden Götter aus ihrer Mitte hinweg und dienten Jehova; und seine Seele wurde ungeduldig über die Mühsal Israels.

And they put away the foreign gods from among them, and served Jehovah; and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

Und die Kinder Ammon versammelten sich und lagerten sich in Gilead; und die Kinder Israel kamen zusammen und lagerten sich zu Mizpa.

Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpah.

Da sprach das Volk, die Obersten von Gilead, einer zum anderen: Wer ist der Mann, der anfängt, wider die Kinder Ammon zu streiten? Er soll allen Bewohnern Gileads zum Haupte sein.

And the people, the princes of Gilead, said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Kapitel 11

Und Jephtha, der Gileaditer, war ein tapferer Held; er war aber der Sohn einer Hure, und Gilead hatte Jephtha gezeugt.

Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

Und auch das Weib Gileads gebar ihm Söhne; und als die Söhne des Weibes groß wurden, da vertrieben sie Jephtha und sprachen zu ihm: Du sollst nicht erben im Hause unseres Vaters, denn du bist der Sohn eines anderen Weibes.

And Gilead`s wife bare him sons; and when his wife`s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father`s house; for thou art the son of another woman.

Und Jephtha floh vor seinen Brüdern und wohnte im Lande Tob. Und es sammelten sich zu Jephtha lose Leute und zogen mit ihm aus.

Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

Und es geschah nach einiger Zeit, da stritten die Kinder Ammon mit Israel.

And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

Und es geschah, als die Kinder Ammon mit Israel stritten, da gingen die Ältesten von Gilead hin, um Jephtha aus dem Lande Tob zu holen.

And it was so, that, when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

Und sie sprachen zu Jephtha: Komm und sei unser Anführer, daß wir wider die Kinder Ammon streiten!

and they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

Und Jephtha sprach zu den Ältesten von Gilead: Seid ihr es nicht, die mich gehaßt und mich aus dem Hause meines Vaters vertrieben haben? Und warum kommet ihr jetzt zu mir, da ihr in Bedrängnis seid?

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father`s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

Und die Ältesten von Gilead sprachen zu Jephtha: Darum sind wir jetzt zu dir zurückgekehrt, daß du mit uns ziehest und wider die Kinder Ammon streitest; und du sollst uns zum Haupte sein, allen Bewohnern Gileads.

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Und Jephta sprach zu den Ältesten von Gilead: Wenn ihr mich zurückholet, um wider die Kinder Ammon zu streiten, und Jehova sie vor mir dahingibt, werde ich euch dann wirklich zum Haupte sein?

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Jehovah deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

Und die Ältesten von Gilead sprachen zu Jephtha: Jehova sei Zeuge zwischen uns, wenn wir nicht also tun, wie du geredet hast!

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.

Da ging Jephtha mit den Ältesten von Gilead, und das Volk setzte ihn zum Haupte und zum Anführer über sich. Und Jephtha redete alle seine Worte vor Jehova zu Mizpa.

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah.

Und Jephtha sandte Boten an den König der Kinder Ammon und ließ ihm sagen: Was haben wir miteinander zu schaffen, daß du gegen mich gekommen bist, mein Land zu bekriegen?

And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?

Und der König der Kinder Ammon sprach zu den Boten Jephthas: Weil Israel mein Land genommen hat, als es aus Ägypten heraufzog, vom Arnon bis an den Jabbok und bis an den Jordan; und nun gib die Länder in Frieden zurück.

And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan: now therefore restore those [lands] again peaceably.

Da sandte Jephtha abermals Boten an den König der Kinder Ammon

And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;

und ließ ihm sagen: So spricht Jephta: Israel hat nicht das Land Moabs und das Land der Kinder Ammon genommen;

and he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

sondern als sie aus Ägypten heraufzogen, da wanderte Israel durch die Wüste bis zum Schilfmeere, und es kam nach Kades;

but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;

und Israel sandte Boten an den König von Edom und ließ ihm sagen: Laß mich doch durch dein Land ziehen! Aber der König von Edom gab kein Gehör. Und auch an den König von Moab sandte es; aber er wollte nicht. So blieb Israel in Kades.

then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

Und es wanderte durch die Wüste und umging das Land Edom und das Land Moab und kam von Sonnenaufgang her zum Lande Moab; und sie lagerten sich jenseit des Arnon und kamen nicht in das Gebiet Moabs, denn der Arnon ist die Grenze Moabs.

Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

Und Israel sandte Boten an Sihon, den König der Amoriter, den König von Hesbon, und Israel ließ ihm sagen: Laß uns doch durch dein Land ziehen bis an meinen Ort!

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.

Aber Sihon traute Israel nicht, es durch sein Gebiet ziehen zu lassen; und Sihon versammelte all sein Volk, und sie lagerten sich zu Jahza; und er stritt wider Israel.

But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

Und Jehova, der Gott Israels, gab Sihon und all sein Volk in die Hand Israels, und sie schlugen sie. So nahm Israel das ganze Land der Amoriter, die jenes Land bewohnten, in Besitz:

And Jehovah, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

sie nahmen das ganze Gebiet der Amoriter in Besitz, vom Arnon bis an den Jabbok, und von der Wüste bis an den Jordan.

And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.

Und so hat nun Jehova, der Gott Israels, die Amoriter vor seinem Volke Israel ausgetrieben, und du willst uns austreiben?

So now Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?

Nimmst du nicht das in Besitz, was Kamos, dein Gott, dir zum Besitz gibt? So auch alles, was Jehova, unser Gott, vor uns ausgetrieben hat, das wollen wir besitzen.

Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

Und nun, bist du etwa besser als Balak, der Sohn Zippors, der König von Moab? Hat er je mit Israel gerechtet, oder je wider sie gestritten?

And now art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

Während Israel in Hesbon wohnte und in seinen Tochterstädten, und in Aroer und in seinen Tochterstädten, und in all den Städten, die längs des Arnon liegen, dreihundert Jahre lang: warum habt ihr sie denn nicht in jener Zeit entrissen?

While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?

Und nicht ich habe gegen dich gesündigt, sondern du tust übel an mir, wider mich zu streiten. Jehova, der Richter, richte heute zwischen den Kindern Israel und den Kindern Ammon!

I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

Aber der König der Kinder Ammon hörte nicht auf die Worte Jephthas, die er ihm entboten hatte.

Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

Da kam der Geist Jehovas über Jephtha; und er zog durch Gilead und Manasse, und zog nach Mizpe in Gilead, und von Mizpe in Gilead zog er gegen die Kinder Ammon.

Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

Und Jephtha gelobte Jehova ein Gelübde und sprach: Wenn du die Kinder Ammon wirklich in meine Hand gibst,

And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

so soll das, was zur Tür meines Hauses herausgeht, mir entgegen, wenn ich in Frieden von den Kindern Ammon zurückkehre, es soll Jehova gehören, und ich werde es als Brandopfer opfern!

then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah`s, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.

Und so zog Jephtha gegen die Kinder Ammon, um wider sie zu streiten; und Jehova gab sie in seine Hand.

So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand.

Und er schlug sie von Aroer an, bis man nach Minnith kommt, zwanzig Städte, und bis nach Abel-Keramim, und er richtete eine sehr große Niederlage unter ihnen an; und die Kinder Ammon wurden gebeugt vor den Kindern Israel.

And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

Und als Jephtha nach Mizpa, nach seinem Hause kam, siehe, da trat seine Tochter heraus, ihm entgegen, mit Tamburinen und mit Reigen; und sie war nur die einzige; außer ihr hatte er weder Sohn noch Tochter.

And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

Und es geschah, als er sie sah, da zerriß er seine Kleider und sprach: Ach, meine Tochter! tief beugst du mich nieder; und du, du bist unter denen, die mich in Trübsal bringen! denn ich habe meinen Mund gegen Jehova aufgetan und kann nicht zurücktreten!

And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back.

Und sie sprach zu ihm: Mein Vater, hast du deinen Mund gegen Jehova aufgetan, so tue mir, wie es aus deinem Munde hervorgegangen ist, nachdem Jehova dir Rache verschafft hat an deinen Feinden, den Kindern Ammon.

And she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon.

Und sie sprach zu ihrem Vater: Es geschehe mir diese Sache: Laß zwei Monate von mir ab, daß ich hingehe und auf die Berge hinabsteige und meine Jungfrauschaft beweine, ich und meine Freundinnen.

And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.

Und er sprach: Gehe hin. Und er entließ sie auf zwei Monate. Und sie ging hin, sie und ihre Freundinnen, und beweinte ihre Jungfrauschaft auf den Bergen.

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

Und es geschah am Ende von zwei Monaten, da kehrte sie zu ihrem Vater zurück. Und er vollzog an ihr das Gelübde, das er gelobt hatte. Sie hatte aber keinen Mann erkannt. Und es wurde zum Gebrauch in Israel:

And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel,

Von Jahr zu Jahr gehen die Töchter Israels hin, um die Tochter Jephthas, des Gileaditers, zu preisen vier Tage im Jahre.

that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

Kapitel 12

Und die Männer von Ephraim versammelten sich und zogen hinüber nach Norden, und sie sprachen zu Jephtha: Warum bist du durchgezogen, um wider die Kinder Ammon zu streiten, und hast uns nicht gerufen, daß wir mit dir gingen? Wir werden dein Haus über dir mit Feuer verbrennen!

And the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward; and they said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thy house upon thee with fire.

Und Jephtha sprach zu ihnen: Einen heftigen Streit haben wir gehabt, ich und mein Volk, mit den Kindern Ammon; und ich rief euch, aber ihr habt mich nicht aus ihrer Hand gerettet.

And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye saved me not out of their hand.

Und als ich sah, daß du nicht helfen wolltest, da setzte ich mein Leben aufs Spiel und zog hin wider die Kinder Ammon; und Jehova gab sie in meine Hand. Warum seid ihr denn an diesem Tage gegen mich heraufgezogen, um wider mich zu streiten?

And when I saw that ye saved me not, I put my life in my hand, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and Jehovah delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?

Und Jephtha versammelte alle Männer von Gilead und stritt mit Ephraim; und die Männer von Gilead schlugen Ephraim, weil sie gesagt hatten: Flüchtlinge Ephraims seid ihr, ihr Gileaditer, inmitten Ephraims und inmitten Manasses!

Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye are fugitives of Ephraim, ye Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim, [and] in the midst of Manasseh.

Und Gilead nahm Ephraim die Furten des Jordan. Und es geschah, wenn ein Flüchtling von Ephraim sprach: Laß mich hinübergehen! so sprachen die Männer von Gilead zu ihm: Bist du ein Ephraimiter?

And the Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And it was so, that, when [any of] the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me go over, the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay;

Und sagte er: Nein! so sprachen sie zu ihm: Sage doch: Schibboleth! Und sagte er: Sibboleth, und brachte es nicht fertig, richtig zu sprechen, dann ergriffen sie ihn und schlachteten ihn an den Furten des Jordan. Und es fielen in jener Zeit von Ephraim 42000.

then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth; and he said Sibboleth; for he could not frame to pronounce it right: then they laid hold on him, and slew him at the fords of the Jordan. And there fell at that time of Ephraim forty and two thousand.

Und Jephtha richtete Israel sechs Jahre; und Jephtha, der Gileaditer, starb und wurde in einer der Städte Gileads begraben.

And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in [one of] the cities of Gilead.

Und nach ihm richtete Israel Ibzan von Bethlehem.

And after him Ibzan of Beth-lehem judged Israel.

Und er hatte dreißig Söhne; und dreißig Töchter entließ er aus dem Hause, und dreißig Töchter brachte er von außen für seine Söhne herein. Und er richtete Israel sieben Jahre.

And he had thirty sons; and thirty daughters he sent abroad, and thirty daughters he brought in from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.

Und Ibzan starb und wurde zu Bethlehem begraben.

And Ibzan died, and was buried at Beth-lehem.

Und nach ihm richtete Israel Elon, der Sebuloniter; und er richtete Israel zehn Jahre.

And after him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.

Und Elon, der Sebuloniter, starb und wurde zu Ajjalon im Lande Sebulon begraben.

And Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

Und nach ihm richtete Israel Abdon, der Sohn Hillels, der Pirhathoniter.

And after him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.

Und er hatte vierzig Söhne und dreißig Enkel, die auf siebzig Eseln ritten. Und er richtete Israel acht Jahre.

And he had forty sons and thirty sons` sons, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years.

Und Abdon, der Sohn Hillels, der Pirhathoniter, starb und wurde zu Pirhathon begraben im Lande Ephraim, im Gebirge der Amalekiter.

And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill-country of the Amalekites.

Kapitel 13

Und die Kinder Israel taten wiederum was böse war in den Augen Jehovas; und Jehova gab sie in die Hand der Philister vierzig Jahre.

And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

Und es war ein Mann aus Zorha, vom Geschlecht der Daniter, sein Name war Manoah. Und sein Weib war unfruchtbar und gebar nicht.

And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not.

Und der Engel Jehovas erschien dem Weibe und sprach zu ihr: Siehe doch, du bist unfruchtbar und gebierst nicht; aber du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären.

And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not; but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.

Und nun hüte dich doch und trinke weder Wein noch starkes Getränk, und iß nichts Unreines!

Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing:

Denn siehe, du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären; und kein Schermesser soll auf sein Haupt kommen, denn ein Nasir Gottes soll der Knabe sein von Mutterleibe an; und er wird anfangen, Israel aus der Hand der Philister zu retten.

for, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

Und das Weib kam und sprach zu ihrem Manne und sagte: Ein Mann Gottes ist zu mir gekommen, und sein Ansehen war wie das Ansehen eines Engels Gottes, sehr furchtbar; und ich habe ihn nicht gefragt, woher er sei, und seinen Namen hat er mir nicht kundgetan.

Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel of God, very terrible; and I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:

Und er sprach zu mir: Siehe, du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären; und nun, trinke weder Wein noch starkes Getränk, und iß nichts Unreines; denn ein Nasir Gottes soll der Knabe sein von Mutterleibe an bis zum Tage seines Todes.

but he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb to the day of his death.

Da flehte Manoah zu Jehova und sprach: Bitte, Herr! der Mann Gottes, den du gesandt hast, möge doch nochmals zu uns kommen und uns lehren, was wir tun sollen mit dem Knaben, der geboren werden soll.

Then Manoah entreated Jehovah, and said, Oh, Lord, I pray thee, let the man of God whom thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.

Und Gott erhörte die Stimme Manoahs; und der Engel Gottes kam nochmals zu dem Weibe, als sie auf dem Felde saß, und Manoah, ihr Mann, nicht bei ihr war.

And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her.

Da eilte das Weib und lief und berichtete es ihrem Manne, und sie sprach zu ihm: Siehe, der Mann ist mir erschienen, der an jenem Tage zu mir gekommen ist.

And the woman made haste, and ran, and told her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the [other] day.

Und Manoah machte sich auf und ging seinem Weibe nach; und er kam zu dem Manne und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der Mann, der zu dem Weibe geredet hat? Und er sprach: Ich bin's.

And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am.

Und Manoah sprach: Wenn nun dein Wort eintrifft, was soll die Weise des Knaben sein und sein Tun?

And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass: what shall be the ordering of the child, and [how] shall we do unto him?

Und der Engel Jehovas sprach zu Manoah: Vor allem, was ich dem Weibe gesagt habe, soll sie sich hüten:

And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware.

von allem, was vom Weinstock kommt, soll sie nicht essen, und Wein und starkes Getränk soll sie nicht trinken, und soll nichts Unreines essen; alles, was ich ihr geboten habe, soll sie beobachten.

She may not eat of anything that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe.

Und Manoah sprach zu dem Engel Jehovas: Laß dich doch von uns aufhalten, so wollen wir dir ein Ziegenböcklein zubereiten.

And Manoah said unto the angel of Jehovah, I pray thee, let us detain thee, that we may make ready a kid for thee.

Und der Engel Jehovas sprach zu Manoah: Wenn du mich auch aufhieltest, ich würde nicht von deinem Brote essen; willst du aber ein Brandopfer opfern, so opfere es Jehova. Denn Manoah wußte nicht, daß es der Engel Jehovas war.

And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wilt make ready a burnt-offering, thou must offer it unto Jehovah. For Manoah knew not that he was the angel of Jehovah.

Und Manoah sprach zu dem Engel Jehovas: Wie ist dein Name, daß wir dich ehren, wenn dein Wort eintrifft?

And Manoah said unto the angel of Jehovah, What is thy name, that, when thy words come to pass, we may do thee honor?

Und der Engel Jehovas sprach zu ihm: Warum fragst du denn nach meinem Namen? er ist ja wunderbar!

And the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore askest thou after my name, seeing it is wonderful?

Da nahm Manoah das Ziegenböcklein und das Speisopfer und opferte es Jehova auf dem Felsen. Er aber handelte wunderbar, und Manoah und sein Weib sahen zu;

So Manoah took the kid with the meal-offering, and offered it upon the rock unto Jehovah: and [the angel] did wondrously, and Manoah and his wife looked on.

und es geschah, als die Flamme von dem Altar gen Himmel emporstieg, da fuhr der Engel Jehovas in der Flamme des Altars hinauf. Und Manoah und sein Weib sahen zu und fielen auf ihr Angesicht zur Erde.

For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of Jehovah ascended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground.

Und der Engel Jehovas erschien Manoah und seinem Weibe fortan nicht mehr. Da erkannte Manoah, daß es der Engel Jehovas war.

But the angel of Jehovah did no more appear to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of Jehovah.

Und Manoah sprach zu seinem Weibe: Wir werden gewißlich sterben, denn wir haben Gott gesehen!

And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.

Aber sein Weib sprach zu ihm: Wenn es Jehova gefallen hätte, uns zu töten, so hätte er nicht ein Brandopfer und Speisopfer aus unserer Hand angenommen, und er hätte uns dies alles nicht gezeigt, noch uns zu dieser Zeit dergleichen vernehmen lassen.

But his wife said unto him, If Jehovah were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meal-offering at our hand, neither would he have showed us all these things, nor would at this time have told such things as these.

Und das Weib gebar einen Sohn; und sie gab ihm den Namen Simson. Und der Knabe wuchs, und Jehova segnete ihn.

And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and Jehovah blessed him.

Und der Geist Jehovas fing an, ihn zu treiben zu Machaneh-Dan zwischen Zorha und Eschtaol.

And the Spirit of Jehovah began to move him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

Kapitel 14

Und Simson ging nach Timna hinab; und er sah in Timna ein Weib von den Töchtern der Philister.

And Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines.

Und er ging hinauf und berichtete es seinem Vater und seiner Mutter und sprach: Ich habe in Timna ein Weib gesehen von den Töchtern der Philister; und nun nehmet sie mir zum Weibe.

And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.

Und sein Vater und seine Mutter sprachen zu ihm: Ist unter den Töchtern deiner Brüder und unter meinem ganzen Volke kein Weib, daß du hingehest, ein Weib zu nehmen von den Philistern, den Unbeschnittenen? Und Simson sprach zu seinem Vater: Diese nimm mir, denn sie ist recht in meinen Augen.

Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.

Sein Vater und seine Mutter wußten aber nicht, daß es von Jehova war; denn er suchte eine Gelegenheit an den Philistern. Und in jener Zeit herrschten die Philister über Israel.

But his father and his mother knew not that it was of Jehovah; for he sought an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines had rule over Israel.

Und Simson ging mit seinem Vater und seiner Mutter nach Timna hinab; und als sie an die Weinberge von Timna kamen, siehe, da brüllte ein junger Löwe ihm entgegen.

Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnah, and came to the vineyards of Timnah: and, behold, a young lion roared against him.

Und der Geist Jehovas geriet über ihn, und er zerriß ihn, wie man ein Böcklein zerreißt; und er hatte gar nichts in seiner Hand. Und er tat seinem Vater und seiner Mutter nicht kund, was er getan hatte.

And the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid; and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

Und er ging hinab und redete zu dem Weibe, und sie war recht in den Augen Simsons.

And he went down, and talked with the woman, and she pleased Samson well.

Und er kehrte nach einiger Zeit zurück, um sie zu nehmen, und er bog ab, um das Aas des Löwen zu besehen, und siehe, ein Bienenschwarm war in dem Körper des Löwen, und Honig.

And after a while he returned to take her; and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey.

Da nahm er ihn heraus in seine Hände, und ging und aß im Gehen; und er ging zu seinem Vater und zu seiner Mutter und gab ihnen, und sie aßen; aber er tat ihnen nicht kund, daß er den Honig aus dem Körper des Löwen herausgenommen hatte.

And he took it into his hands, and went on, eating as he went; and he came to his father and mother, and gave unto them, and they did eat: but he told them not that he had taken the honey out of the body of the lion.

Und sein Vater ging zu dem Weibe hinab, und Simson machte daselbst ein Mahl; denn also pflegten die Jünglinge zu tun.

And his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.

Und es geschah, als sie ihn sahen, da nahmen die dreißig Gesellen; und sie waren bei ihm.

And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.

Und Simson sprach zu ihnen: Ich will euch einmal ein Rätsel aufgeben; wenn ihr es mir in den sieben Tagen des Mahles kundtut und es erratet, so werde ich euch dreißig Hemden und dreißig Wechselkleider geben;

And Samson said unto them, Let me now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can declare it unto me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of raiment;

Wenn ihr es mir aber nicht kundtun könnet, so sollt ihr mir dreißig Hemden und dreißig Wechselkleider geben. Und sie sprachen zu ihm: Gib dein Rätsel auf, daß wir es hören!

but if ye cannot declare it unto me, then shall ye give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of raiment. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.

Und er sprach zu ihnen: Aus dem Fresser kam Fraß, und aus dem Starken kam Süßigkeit. Und sie vermochten das Rätsel nicht kundzutun drei Tage lang.

And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth food, And out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days declare the riddle.

Und es geschah am siebten Tage, da sprachen sie zu dem Weibe Simsons: Berede deinen Mann, daß er uns das Rätsel kundtue, damit wir nicht dich und deines Vaters Haus mit Feuer verbrennen! Um uns zu berauben, habt ihr uns geladen, nicht wahr?

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson`s wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father`s house with fire: have ye called us to impoverish us? is it not [so]?

Und Simsons Weib weinte an ihm und sprach: Du hassest mich nur und liebst mich nicht. Das Rätsel hast du den Kindern meines Volkes aufgegeben, und mir hast du es nicht kundgetan. Und er sprach zu ihr: Siehe, meinem Vater und meiner Mutter habe ich es nicht kundgetan, und dir sollte ich es kundtun?

And Samson`s wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell thee?

Und sie weinte an ihm die sieben Tage, da sie das Mahl hatten. Und es geschah am siebten Tage, da tat er es ihr kund, denn sie drängte ihn. Und sie tat das Rätsel den Kindern ihres Volkes kund.

And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she pressed him sore; and she told the riddle to the children of her people.

Da sprachen die Männer der Stadt zu ihm am siebten Tage, ehe die Sonne unterging: Was ist süßer als Honig? und was ist stärker als der Löwe? Und er sprach zu ihnen: Wenn ihr nicht mit meinem Kalbe gepflügt hättet, so hättet ihr mein Rätsel nicht erraten.

And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, Ye had not found out my riddle.

Und der Geist Jehovas geriet über ihn; und er ging hinab nach Askalon und erschlug von ihnen dreißig Mann und nahm ihre ausgezogenen Gewänder und gab die Wechselkleider denen, welche das Rätsel kundgetan hatten. Und sein Zorn entbrannte, und er ging hinauf in das Haus seines Vaters.

And the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and smote thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave the changes [of raiment] unto them that declared the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father`s house.

Und das Weib Simsons wurde einem seiner Gesellen gegeben, den er sich zugesellt hatte.

But Samson`s wife was [given] to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.

Kapitel 15

Und es geschah nach einiger Zeit, in den Tagen der Weizenernte, da besuchte Simson sein Weib mit einem Ziegenböcklein. Und er sprach: Ich will zu meinem Weibe ins Gemach gehen; aber ihr Vater gestattete ihm nicht hineinzugehen.

But it came to pass after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.

Und ihr Vater sprach: Ich habe gewißlich gedacht, daß du sie haßtest, und so habe ich sie deinem Gesellen gegeben. Ist nicht ihre jüngere Schwester schöner als sie? Möge sie doch dein werden an ihrer Statt.

And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.

Da sprach Simson zu ihnen: Diesmal bin ich schuldlos an den Philistern, wenn ich ihnen Übles tue.

And Samson said unto them, This time shall I be blameless in regard of the Philistines, when I do them a mischief.

Und Simson ging hin und fing dreihundert Schakale; und er nahm Fackeln und kehrte Schwanz an Schwanz und tat eine Fackel zwischen je zwei Schwänze in die Mitte,

And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between every two tails.

und er zündete die Fackeln mit Feuer an. Und er ließ sie los in das stehende Getreide der Philister und zündete sowohl Garbenhaufen als stehendes Getreide und Olivengärten an.

And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks and the standing grain, and also the oliveyards.

Und die Philister sprachen: Wer hat das getan? Und man sagte: Simson, der Eidam des Timniters, weil er ihm sein Weib genommen und sie seinem Gesellen gegeben hat. Da zogen die Philister hinauf und verbrannten sie und ihren Vater mit Feuer.

Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they said, Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he hath taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.

Und Simson sprach zu ihnen: Wenn ihr also tut - es sei denn, daß ich mich an euch gerächt habe, danach will ich aufhören!

And Samson said unto them, If ye do after this manner, surely I will be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.

Und er schlug sie, Schenkel samt Hüfte, und richtete eine große Niederlage unter ihnen an. Und er ging hinab und wohnte in der Kluft des Felsens Etam.

And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the cleft of the rock of Etam.

Und die Philister zogen herauf und lagerten sich in Juda und breiteten sich aus in Lechi.

Then the Philistines went up, and encamped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.

Und die Männer von Juda sprachen: Warum seid ihr wider uns heraufgezogen? Und sie sprachen: Um Simson zu binden, sind wir heraufgezogen, daß wir ihm tun, wie er uns getan hat.

And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they said, To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.

Da zogen dreitausend Mann von Juda zur Kluft des Felsens Etam hinab und sprachen zu Simson: Weißt du nicht, daß die Philister über uns herrschen? und warum hast du uns das getan? Und er sprach zu ihnen: Wie sie mir getan, also habe ich ihnen getan.

Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what then is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Um dich zu binden, sind wir herabgekommen, daß wir dich in die Hand der Philister liefern. Und Simson sprach zu ihnen: Schwöret mir, daß ihr nicht über mich herfallen werdet!

And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.

Und sie sprachen zu ihm und sagten: Nein, sondern binden wollen wir dich und dich in ihre Hand liefern; aber töten wollen wir dich nicht. Und sie banden ihn mit zwei neuen Stricken und führten ihn aus dem Felsen herauf.

And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock.

Als er nach Lechi kam, da jauchzten ihm die Philister entgegen; aber der Geist Jehovas geriet über ihn, und die Stricke, welche an seinen Armen waren, wurden wie Flachsfäden, die vom Feuer versengt sind, und seine Bande schmolzen weg von seinen Händen.

When he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and the ropes that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands dropped from off his hands.

Und er fand einen frischen Eselskinnbacken, und er streckte seine Hand aus und nahm ihn und erschlug damit tausend Mann.

And he found a fresh jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and smote a thousand men therewith.

Und Simson sprach: Mit dem Eselskinnbacken einen Haufen, zwei Haufen! Mit dem Eselskinnbacken habe ich tausend Mann erschlagen!

And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, With the jawbone of an ass have I smitten a thousand men.

Und es geschah, als er ausgeredet hatte, da warf er den Kinnbacken aus seiner Hand; und er nannte selbigen Ort Ramath-Lechi.

And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramath-lehi.

Und es dürstete ihn sehr, und er rief zu Jehova und sprach: Du hast durch die Hand deines Knechtes diese große Rettung gegeben, und nun soll ich vor Durst sterben und in die Hand der Unbeschnittenen fallen!

And he was sore athirst, and called on Jehovah, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance by the hand of thy servant; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised.

Da spaltete Gott die Höhlung, die zu Lechi ist, und es kam Wasser aus ihr hervor; und er trank, und sein Geist kehrte zurück, und er lebte wieder auf. Daher gab man ihr den Namen: Quelle des Rufenden, die zu Lechi ist, bis auf diesen Tag.

But God clave the hollow place that is in Lehi, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore the name thereof was called En-hakkore, which is in Lehi, unto this day.

Und er richtete Israel in den Tagen der Philister zwanzig Jahre.

And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

Kapitel 16

Und Simson ging nach Gasa, und er sah daselbst eine Hure und ging zu ihr ein.

And Samson went to Gaza, and saw there a harlot, and went in unto her.

Und es wurde den Gasitern berichtet und gesagt: Simson ist hierher gekommen. Und sie umstellten ihn und lauerten die ganze Nacht auf ihn im Stadttore; und sie verhielten sich still die ganze Nacht und sprachen: Bis der Morgen hell wird, dann wollen wir ihn erschlagen.

[And it was told] the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, [Let be] till morning light, then we will kill him.

Und Simson lag bis Mitternacht. Um Mitternacht aber stand er auf und ergriff die Flügel des Stadttores und die beiden Pfosten, und riß sie samt dem Riegel heraus und legte sie auf seine Schultern; und er trug sie auf den Gipfel des Berges, der gegen Hebron hin liegt.

And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and laid hold of the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and plucked them up, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron.

Und es geschah hernach, da liebte er ein Weib im Tale Sorek, ihr Name war Delila.

And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.

Und die Fürsten der Philister gingen zu ihr hinauf und sprachen zu ihr: Berede ihn und sieh, worin seine große Stärke besteht, und wodurch wir ihn überwältigen können, daß wir ihn binden, um ihn zu bezwingen; und wir wollen dir ein jeder 1100 Sekel Silber geben.

And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred [pieces] of silver.

Da sprach Delila zu Simson: Tue mir doch kund, worin deine große Stärke besteht, und womit du gebunden werden kannst, daß man dich bezwinge.

And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.

Und Simson sprach zu ihr: Wenn man mich bände mit sieben frischen Stricken, die nicht ausgetrocknet sind, so würde ich schwach werden und würde sein wie ein anderer Mensch.

And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withes that were never dried, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.

Und die Fürsten der Philister brachten sieben frische Stricke, die nicht ausgetrocknet waren, zu ihr hinauf; und sie band ihn damit.

Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withes which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.

Es saßen aber Auflaurer bei ihr im Gemach; und sie sprach zu ihm: Philister über dir, Simson! Da zerriß er die Stricke, wie eine Schnur von Werg zerreißt, wenn sie Feuer riecht; und seine Stärke ward nicht kund.

Now she had liers-in-wait abiding in the inner chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withes, as a string of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.

Da sprach Delila zu Simson: Siehe, du hast mich getäuscht und Lügen zu mir geredet. Nun tue mir doch kund, womit du gebunden werden kannst!

And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.

Und er sprach zu ihr: Wenn man mich fest bände mit neuen Seilen, mit denen keine Arbeit geschehen ist, so würde ich schwach werden und würde sein wie ein anderer Mensch.

And he said unto her, If they only bind me with new ropes wherewith no work hath been done, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.

Da nahm Delila neue Seile und band ihn damit, und sie sprach zu ihm: Philister über dir, Simson! Es saßen aber Auflaurer im Gemach. Und er riß sie von seinen Armen wie einen Faden.

So Delilah took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And the liers-in-wait were abiding in the inner chamber. And he brake them off his arms like a thread.

Da sprach Delila zu Simson: Bisher hast du mich getäuscht und Lügen zu mir geredet. Tue mir kund, womit du gebunden werden kannst! Und er sprach zu ihr: Wenn du die sieben Flechten meines Hauptes mit dem Gewebe verwebtest.

And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.

Und sie heftete sie mit dem Pflocke und sprach zu ihm: Philister über dir, Simson! Da wachte er auf von seinem Schlafe und riß den Webepflock und das Gewebe heraus.

And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and plucked away the pin of the beam, and the web.

Da sprach sie zu ihm: Wie kannst du sagen: Ich habe dich lieb, so doch dein Herz nicht mit mir ist? Nun dreimal hast du mich getäuscht und mir nicht kundgetan, worin deine große Stärke besteht.

And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.

Und es geschah, als sie ihn alle Tage mit ihren Worten drängte und ihn plagte, da wurde seine Seele ungeduldig zum Sterben;

And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was vexed unto death.

Und er tat ihr sein ganzes Herz kund und sprach zu ihr: Kein Schermesser ist auf mein Haupt gekommen, denn ein Nasir Gottes bin ich von Mutterleibe an; wenn ich geschoren würde, so würde meine Stärke von mir weichen, und ich würde schwach werden und würde sein wie alle Menschen.

And he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite unto God from my mother`s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

und als Delila sah, daß er ihr sein ganzes Herz kundgetan hatte, da sandte sie hin und rief die Fürsten der Philister und sprach: Kommet diesmal herauf, denn er hat mir sein ganzes Herz kundgetan. Und die Fürsten der Philister kamen zu ihr hinauf und brachten das Geld mit sich.

And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath told me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought the money in their hand.

Und sie ließ ihn auf ihren Knien einschlafen, und rief einen Mann und ließ die sieben Flechten seines Hauptes abscheren; und sie fing an, ihn zu bezwingen, und seine Stärke wich von ihm.

And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.

Und sie sprach: Philister über dir, Simson! Da wachte er auf von seinem Schlafe und dachte: Ich werde davonkommen wie die anderen Male und mich herausschütteln. Er wußte aber nicht, daß Jehova von ihm gewichen war.

And she said, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times, and shake myself free. But he knew not that Jehovah was departed from him.

Und sie Philister griffen ihn und stachen ihm die Augen aus; und sie führten ihn nach Gasa hinab und banden ihn mit ehernen Fesseln, und er mußte mahlen im Gefängnis.

And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house.

Aber das Haar seines Hauptes begann wieder zu wachsen, sobald es geschoren war.

Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.

Und die Fürsten der Philister versammelten sich, um ihrem Gott Dagon ein großes Schlachtopfer zu opfern und um ein Freudenfest zu feiern; denn sie sprachen: Unser Gott hat Simson, unseren Feind, in unsere Hand gegeben.

And the lords of the Philistines gathered them together to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.

Und als das Volk ihn sah, priesen sie ihren Gott; denn sie sprachen: Unser Gott hat unseren Feind in unsere Hand gegeben, und den Verheerer unseres Landes und den, der unserer Erschlagenen viel machte.

And when the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hand our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, who hath slain many of us.

Und es geschah, als ihr Herz fröhlich war, da sprachen sie: Rufet Simson, daß er vor uns spiele. Und sie riefen Simson aus dem Gefängnis, und er spielte vor ihnen; und sie stellten ihn zwischen die Säulen.

And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison-house; and he made sport before them. And they set him between the pillars:

Und Simson sprach zu dem Knaben, der ihn bei der Hand hielt: Laß mich, daß ich die Säulen betaste, auf welchen das Haus ruht, und mich an sie lehne.

and Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house resteth, that I may lean upon them.

Das Haus war aber voll Männern und Weibern, und alle Fürsten der Philister waren daselbst; und auf dem Dache waren bei dreitausend Männer und Weiber, welche zusahen, wie Simson spielte.

Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.

Und Simson rief zu Jehova und sprach: Herr, Jehova! gedenke doch meiner, und stärke mich doch nur diesmal, o Gott, daß ich an den Philistern eine einmalige Rache nehme für meine beiden Augen!

And Samson called unto Jehovah, and said, O Lord Jehovah, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.

Und Simson umfaßte die beiden Mittelsäulen, auf welchen das Haus ruhte, (und er stützte sich darauf) die eine mit seiner Rechten und die andere mit seiner Linken;

And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house rested, and leaned upon them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left.

und Simson sprach: Meine Seele sterbe mit den Philistern! Und er beugte sich mit Kraft; da fiel das Haus auf die Fürsten und auf alles Volk, das darin war; und es waren der Toten, die er in seinem Tode tötete, mehr als derer, die er in seinem Leben getötet hatte.

And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead that he slew at his death were more than they that he slew in his life.

Und seine Brüder und das ganze Haus seines Vaters kamen herab und hoben ihn auf; und sie gingen hinauf und begruben ihn zwischen Zorha und Eschtaol, im Grabe Manoahs, seines Vaters. Er hatte aber Israel zwanzig Jahre gerichtet.

Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burying-place of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.

Kapitel 17

Und es war ein Mann vom Gebirge Ephraim, sein Name war Micha.

And there was a man of the hill-country of Ephraim, whose name was Micah.

Und er sprach zu seiner Mutter: Die 1100 Sekel Silber, die dir genommen worden sind, und worüber du einen Fluch getan und auch vor meinen Ohren geredet hast, siehe, das Silber ist bei mir; ich habe es genommen. Da sprach seine Mutter: Gesegnet sei mein Sohn von Jehova!

And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred [pieces] of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou didst utter a curse, and didst also speak it in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be my son of Jehovah.

Und er gab die 1100 Sekel Silber seiner Mutter zurück. Und seine Mutter sprach: Das Silber hatte ich von meiner Hand Jehova geheiligt für meinen Sohn, um ein geschnitztes Bild und ein gegossenes Bild zu machen; und nun gebe ich es dir zurück.

And he restored the eleven hundred [pieces] of silver to his mother; and his mother said, I verily dedicate the silver unto Jehovah from my hand for my son, to make a graven image and a molten image: now therefore I will restore it unto thee.

Und er gab das Silber seiner Mutter zurück. Und seine Mutter nahm zweihundert Sekel Silber und gab sie dem Goldschmied, und der machte daraus ein geschnitztes Bild und ein gegossenes Bild; und es war im Hause Michas.

And when he restored the money unto his mother, his mother took two hundred [pieces] of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a graven image and a molten image: and it was in the house of Micah.

Und der Mann Micha hatte ein Gotteshaus; und er machte ein Ephod und Teraphim und weihte einen von seinen Söhnen, und er wurde sein Priester.

And the man Micah had a house of gods, and he made an ephod, and teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

In jenen Tagen war kein König in Israel; ein jeder tat, was recht war in seinen Augen.

In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

Und es war ein Jüngling aus Bethlehem-Juda vom Geschlecht Juda; der war ein Levit und hielt sich daselbst auf.

And there was a young man out of Beth-lehem-judah, of the family of Judah, who was a Levite; and he sojourned there.

Und der Mann zog aus der Stadt, aus Bethlehem-Juda, um sich aufzuhalten, wo er es treffen würde. Und indem er seines Weges zog, kam er in das Gebirge Ephraim bis zum Hause Michas.

And the man departed out of the city, out of Beth-lehem-judah, to sojourn where he could find [a place], and he came to the hill-country of Ephraim to the house of Micah, as he journeyed.

Und Micha sprach zu ihm: Woher kommst du? Und er sprach zu ihm: Ich bin ein Levit aus Bethlehem-Juda; und ich gehe hin, mich aufzuhalten, wo ich es treffen werde.

And Micah said unto him, Whence comest thou? And he said unto him, I am a Levite of Beth-lehem-judah, and I go to sojourn where I may find [a place].

Da sprach Micha zu ihm: Bleibe bei mir, und sei mir ein Vater und ein Priester, so werde ich dir jährlich zehn Sekel Silber geben und Ausrüstung an Kleidern und deinen Lebensunterhalt. Und der Levit ging hinein.

And Micah said unto him, Dwell with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee ten [pieces] of silver by the year, and a suit of apparel, and thy victuals. So the Levite went in.

Und der Levit willigte ein, bei dem Manne zu bleiben; und der Jüngling ward ihm wie einer seiner Söhne.

And the Levite was content to dwell with the man; and the young man was unto him as one of his sons.

Und Micha weihte den Leviten; und der Jüngling wurde sein Priester und war im Hause Michas.

And Micah consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah.

Und Micha sprach: Nun weiß ich, daß Jehova mir wohltun wird, denn ich habe einen Leviten zum Priester.

Then said Micah, Now know I that Jehovah will do me good, seeing I have a Levite to my priest.

Kapitel 18

In jenen Tagen war kein König in Israel. Und in jenen Tagen suchte sich der Stamm der Daniter ein Erbteil zum Wohnen, denn bis auf jenen Tag war ihm inmitten der Stämme Israels nichts als Erbteil zugefallen.

In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day [their] inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

Und die Kinder Dan sandten fünf Männer aus ihrem Geschlecht, aus ihrer Gesamtheit, tapfere Männer, aus Zorha und aus Eschtaol, um das Land auszukundschaften und es zu erforschen; und sie sprachen zu ihnen: Gehet hin, erforschet das Land. Und sie kamen in das Gebirge Ephraim bis zum Hause Michas, und sie übernachteten daselbst.

And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their whole number, men of valor, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land. And they came to the hill-country of Ephraim, unto the house of Micah, and lodged there.

Als sie beim Hause Michas waren, erkannten sie die Stimme des Jünglings, des Leviten, und sie wandten sich dahin und sprachen zu ihm: Wer hat dich hierhergebracht, und was tust du hier, und was hast du hier?

When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite; and they turned aside thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what doest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

Und er sprach zu ihnen: So und so hat Micha mir getan; und er hat mich gedungen, und ich bin sein Priester geworden.

And he said unto them, Thus and thus hath Micah dealt with me, and he hath hired me, and I am become his priest.

Und sie sprachen zu ihm: Befrage doch Gott, daß wir wissen, ob unser Weg, auf dem wir ziehen, gelingen wird.

And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.

Und der Priester sprach zu ihnen: Ziehet hin in Frieden! Vor Jehova ist euer Weg, auf dem ihr ziehet.

And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before Jehovah is your way wherein ye go.

Und die fünf Männer gingen hin und kamen nach Lais; und sie sahen das Volk, das darin war, in Sicherheit wohnen, nach Art der Zidonier, ruhig und sicher; und niemand, der die Herrschaft besessen hätte im Lande, tat ihnen irgend etwas zuleide; und sie waren fern von den Zidoniern und hatten mit Menschen nichts zu schaffen. -

Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and secure; for there was none in the land, possessing authority, that might put [them] to shame in anything, and they were far from the Sidonians, and had no dealings with any man.

Und sie kamen zu ihren Brüdern nach Zorha und Eschtaol. Und ihre Brüder sprachen zu ihnen: Was bringet ihr?

And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What [say] ye?

Und sie sprachen: Machet euch auf, und laßt uns wider sie hinaufziehen; denn wir haben das Land besehen, und siehe, es ist sehr gut. Und ihr bleibet stille? Seid nicht träge, hinzugehen, um hineinzukommen, das Land in Besitz zu nehmen;

And they said, Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go and to enter in to possess the land.

(wenn ihr kommmet, werdet ihr zu einem sicheren Volke kommen, und das Land ist geräumig nach allen Seiten hin) denn Gott hat es in eure Hand gegeben: es ist ein Ort, wo es an nichts mangelt von allem, was auf Erden ist.

When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and the land is large; for God hath given it into your hand, a place where there is no want of anything that is in the earth.

Und es brachen von dannen auf, vom Geschlecht der Daniter, aus Zorha und aus Eschtaol, sechshundert Mann, umgürtet mit Kriegsgerät.

And there set forth from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men girt with weapons of war.

Und sie zogen hinauf und lagerten sich zu Kirjath-Jearim in Juda; daher hat man selbigen Ort Machaneh-Dan genannt bis auf diesen Tag; siehe, er ist hinter Kirjath-Jearim.

And they went up, and encamped in Kiriath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan, unto this day; behold, it is behind Kiriath-jearim.

Und von dannen zogen sie weiter in das Gebirge Ephraim und kamen bis zum Hause Michas.

And they passed thence unto the hill-country of Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

Da hoben die fünf Männer an, welche gegangen waren, das Land Lais auszukundschaften, und sprachen zu ihren Brüdern: Wisset ihr, daß in diesen Häusern Ephod und Teraphim und ein geschnitztes Bild und ein gegossenes Bild sind? Und nun wisset, was ihr tun wollt.

Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.

Und sie wandten sich dahin und traten in das Haus des Jünglings, des Leviten, das Haus Michas, und fragten ihn nach seinem Wohlergehen.

And they turned aside thither, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and asked him of his welfare.

Die sechshundert mit ihrem Kriegsgerät umgürteten Männer aber, die von den Kindern Dan waren, blieben am Eingang des Tores stehen.

And the six hundred men girt with their weapons of war, who were of the children of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.

Und die fünf Männer, die gegangen waren, das Land auszukundschaften, stiegen hinauf, gingen hinein und nahmen das geschnitzte Bild und das Ephod und die Teraphim und das gegossene Bild. Und der Priester und die sechshundert Mann, die mit Kriegsgerät umgürtet waren, standen am Eingang des Tores.

And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men girt with weapons of war.

Als jene nämlich in das Haus Michas gingen und das geschnitzte Bild, das Ephod und die Teraphim und das gegossene Bild wegnahmen, da sprach der Priester zu ihnen: Was tut ihr?

And when these went into Micah`s house, and fetched the graven image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said unto them, What do ye?

Und sie sprachen zu ihm: Schweige! lege deine Hand auf deinen Mund und gehe mit uns, und sei uns ein Vater und ein Priester. Ist es besser für dich, Priester zu sein für das Haus eines einzelnen Mannes, oder Priester zu sein für einen Stamm und für ein Geschlecht in Israel?

And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thy hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be priest unto the house of one man, or to be priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

Da wurde das Herz des Priesters froh, und er nahm das Ephod und die Teraphim und das geschnitzte Bild und ging mitten unter das Volk.

And the priest`s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

Und sie wandten sich und zogen weg und stellten die Kinder und das Vieh und die wertvollen Dinge voran.

So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the goods before them.

Sie waren schon fern vom Hause Michas, da versammelten sich die Männer, die in den Häusern waren, die beim Hause Michas standen, und ereilten die Kinder Dan.

When they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah`s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

Und sie riefen den Kindern Dan zu; und diese wandten ihr Angesicht um und sprachen zu Micha: Was ist dir, daß du dich versammelt hast?

And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?

Und er sprach: Meine Götter, die ich gemacht hatte, habt ihr genommen und den Priester, und seid weggezogen; und was habe ich noch? und wie sprechet ihr denn zu mir: Was ist dir?

And he said, ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and are gone away, and what have I more? and how then say ye unto me, What aileth thee?

Aber die Kinder Dan sprachen zu ihm: Laß deine Stimme nicht bei uns hören, damit nicht Männer heftigen Gemütes über euch herfallen, und du dich und dein Haus ums Leben bringest!

And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall upon you, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.

Und die Kinder Dan zogen ihres Weges. Und als Micha sah, daß sie ihm zu stark waren, wandte er sich und kehrte in sein Haus zurück.

And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

So nahmen sie, was Micha gemacht hatte, und den Priester, den er besaß. Und sie überfielen Lais, ein ruhiges und sicheres Volk, und schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes; und die Stadt verbrannten sie mit Feuer.

And they took that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people quiet and secure, and smote them with the edge of the sword; and they burnt the city with fire.

Und kein Erretter war da; denn die Stadt war fern von Zidon, und sie hatten nichts mit Menschen zu schaffen; und sie lag in dem Tale, das sich nach Beth-Rechob hin erstreckt. Und sie bauten die Stadt wieder auf und wohnten darin;

And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built the city, and dwelt therein.

und sie gaben der Stadt den Namen Dan, nach dem Namen Dans, ihres Vaters, welcher dem Israel geboren wurde; dagegen war im Anfang Lais der Name der Stadt. -

And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

Und die Kinder Dan richteten sich das geschnitzte Bild auf; und Jonathan, der Sohn Gersoms, des Sohnes Moses, er und seine Söhne waren Priester für den Stamm der Daniter bis auf den Tag, da das Land in Gefangenschaft geführt wurde.

And the children of Dan set up for themselves the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.

Und sie stellten sich das geschnitzte Bild Michas auf, das er gemacht hatte, alle die Tage, da das Haus Gottes in Silo war.

So they set them up Micah`s graven image which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

Kapitel 19

Und es geschah in jenen Tagen, als kein König in Israel war, daß sich ein levitischer Mann an der äußersten Seite des Gebirges Ephraim aufhielt; und er nahm sich ein Kebsweib aus Bethlehem-Juda.

And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.

Und sein Kebsweib hurte neben ihm; und sie ging von ihm weg in das Haus ihres Vaters, nach Bethlehem-Juda, und war daselbst eine Zeitlang, vier Monate.

And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him unto her father`s house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there the space of four months.

Und ihr Mann machte sich auf und ging ihr nach, um zu ihrem Herzen zu reden, sie zurückzubringen; und sein Knabe war mit ihm und ein Paar Esel. Und sie führte ihn in das Haus ihres Vaters; und als der Vater des jungen Weibes ihn sah, kam er ihm freudig entgegen.

And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly unto her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father`s house; and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

Und sein Schwiegervater, der Vater des jungen Weibes, hielt ihn zurück, und er blieb drei Tage bei ihm; und sie aßen und tranken und übernachteten daselbst.

And his father-in-law, the damsel`s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.

Und es geschah am vierten Tage, da machten sie sich des Morgens früh auf, und er erhob sich, um fortzugehen. Da sprach der Vater des jungen Weibes zu seinem Eidam: Stärke dein Herz mit einem Bissen Brot, und danach möget ihr ziehen.

And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the damsel`s father said unto his son-in-law, Strengthen thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye shall go your way.

Und sie setzten sich und aßen und tranken beide miteinander. Und der Vater des jungen Weibes sprach zu dem Manne: Laß es dir doch gefallen und bleibe über Nacht und laß dein Herz fröhlich sein!

So they sat down, and did eat and drink, both of them together: and the damsel`s father said unto the man, Be pleased, I pray thee, to tarry all night, and let thy heart be merry.

Und als der Mann sich erhob, um fortzugehen, da drang sein Schwiegervater in ihn, und er übernachtete wiederum daselbst.

And the man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.

Und am fünften Tage machte er sich des Morgens früh auf, um fortzugehen; da sprach der Vater des jungen Weibes: Stärke doch dein Herz und verziehet, bis der Tag sich neigt! Und so aßen sie beide miteinander.

And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel`s father said, Strengthen thy heart, I pray thee, and tarry ye until the day declineth; and they did eat, both of them.

Und der Mann erhob sich, um fortzugehen, er und sein Kebsweib und sein Knabe. Aber sein Schwiegervater, der Vater des jungen Weibes, sprach zu ihm: Siehe doch, der Tag nimmt ab, es will Abend werden; übernachtet doch! Siehe, der Tag sinkt, übernachte hier und laß dein Herz fröhlich sein; und ihr machet euch morgen früh auf euren Weg, und du ziehst nach deinem Zelte.

And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel`s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thy heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.

Aber der Mann wollte nicht übernachten, und er erhob sich und zog fort; und er kam bis vor Jebus, das ist Jerusalem, und mit ihm das Paar gesattelter Esel, und sein Kebsweib mit ihm.

But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of asses saddled; his concubine also was with him.

Sie waren bei Jebus, und der Tag war sehr herabgesunken, da sprach der Knabe zu seinem Herrn: Komm doch und laß uns in diese Stadt der Jebusiter einkehren und darin übernachten.

When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.

Aber sein Herr sprach zu ihm: Wir wollen nicht in eine Stadt der Fremden einkehren, die nicht von den Kindern Israel sind, sondern wollen nach Gibea hinübergehen.

And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.

Und er sprach zu seinem Knaben: Komm, daß wir uns einem der Orte nähern und in Gibea oder in Rama übernachten.

And he said unto his servant, Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.

So zogen sie vorüber und gingen weiter, und die Sonne ging ihnen unter nahe bei Gibea, das Benjamin gehört.

So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them near to Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.

Und sie wandten sich dahin, daß sie hineinkämen, um in Gibea zu übernachten. Und er kam hinein und setzte sich hin auf den Platz der Stadt; und niemand war, der sie ins Haus aufgenommen hätte, um zu übernachten.

And they turned aside thither, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.

Und siehe, ein alter Mann kam von seiner Arbeit, vom Felde, am Abend; und der Mann war vom Gebirge Ephraim, und er hielt sich in Gibea auf; die Leute des Ortes aber waren Benjaminiter.

And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even: now the man was of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.

Und er erhob seine Augen und sah den Wandersmann auf dem Platze der Stadt, und der alte Mann sprach: Wohin gehst du? Und woher kommst du?

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?

Und er sprach zu ihm: Wir reisen von Bethlehem-Juda nach der äußersten Seite des Gebirges Ephraim; von dort bin ich her, und ich bin nach Bethlehem-Juda gegangen, und ich wandle mit dem Hause Jehovas; und niemand ist, der mich in sein Haus aufnimmt.

And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah unto the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim; from thence am I, and I went to Beth-lehem-judah: and I am [now] going to the house of Jehovah; and there is no man that taketh me into his house.

Und wir haben sowohl Stroh als auch Futter für unsere Esel, und auch Brot und Wein habe ich für mich und für deine Magd und für den Knaben, der mit deinen Knechten ist; es mangelt an nichts.

Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man that is with thy servants: there is no want of anything.

Da sprach der alte Mann: Friede dir! Nur liege all dein Bedarf mir ob; doch auf dem Platze übernachte nicht.

And the old man said, Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.

Und er führte ihn in sein Haus und gab den Eseln Futter. Und sie wuschen ihre Füße und aßen und tranken.

So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder; and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

Sie ließen ihr Herz guter Dinge sein, siehe, da umringten die Männer der Stadt, Männer, welche Söhne Belials waren, das Haus, schlugen an die Tür und sprachen zu dem alten Manne, dem Herrn des Hauses, und sagten: Führe den Mann, der in dein Haus gekommen ist, heraus, daß wir ihn erkennen!

As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, beset the house round about, beating at the door; and they spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thy house, that we may know him.

Und der Mann, der Herr des Hauses, ging zu ihnen hinaus und sprach zu ihnen: Nicht doch, meine Brüder, tut doch nicht übel; nachdem dieser Mann in mein Haus gekommen ist, begehet nicht diese Schandtat!

And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this folly.

Siehe, meine Tochter, die Jungfrau, und sein Kebsweib, lasset mich doch sie herausführen; und schwächet sie und tut mit ihnen, was gut ist in euren Augen; aber an diesem Manne begehet nicht diese Schandtat!

Behold, here is my daughter a virgin, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not any such folly.

Aber die Männer wollten nicht auf ihn hören. Da ergriff der Mann sein Kebsweib und führte sie zu ihnen hinaus auf die Straße; und sie erkannten sie und mißhandelten sie die ganze Nacht bis an den Morgen; und sie ließen sie gehen, als die Morgenröte aufging.

But the men would not hearken to him: so the man laid hold on his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

Und das Weib kam beim Anbruch des Morgens und fiel nieder am Eingang des Hauses des Mannes, woselbst ihr Herr war, und lag dort, bis es hell wurde.

Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man`s house where her lord was, till it was light.

Und als ihr Herr am Morgen aufstand und die Tür des Hauses öffnete und hinaustrat, um seines Weges zu ziehen: Siehe, da lag das Weib, sein Kebsweib, an dem Eingang des Hauses, und ihre Hände auf der Schwelle.

And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands upon the threshold.

Und er sprach zu ihr: Stehe auf und laß uns gehen! Aber niemand antwortete. Da nahm er sie auf den Esel, und der Mann machte sich auf und zog an seinen Ort.

And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going; but none answered: then he took her up upon the ass; and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

Und als er in sein Haus gekommen war, nahm er sein Messer und ergriff sein Kebsweib und zerstückte sie, nach ihren Gebeinen, in zwölf Stücke; und er sandte sie in alle Grenzen Israels.

And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.

Und es geschah, ein jeder, der es sah, sprach: Solches ist nicht geschehen noch gesehen worden von dem Tage an, da die Kinder Israel aus dem Lande Ägypten heraufgezogen sind, bis auf diesen Tag. Bedenket euch darüber, beratet und redet!

And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider it, take counsel, and speak.

Kapitel 20

Und alle Kinder Israel zogen aus, und die Gemeinde, von Dan bis Beerseba, und das Land Gilead versammelte sich wie ein Mann vor Jehova nach Mizpa.

Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto Jehovah at Mizpah.

Und die Häupter des ganzen Volkes, aller Stämme Israels, stellten sich in der Versammlung des Volkes Gottes: 400000 Mann Fußvolk, die das Schwert zogen. -

And the chiefs of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

Und die Kinder Benjamin hörten, daß die Kinder Israel nach Mizpa hinaufgezogen waren. - Und die Kinder Israel sprachen: Redet, wie ist diese Übeltat geschehen?

(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpah.) And the children of Israel said, Tell us, how was this wickedness brought to pass?

Da antwortete der levitische Mann, der Mann des ermordeten Weibes, und sprach: Ich war nach Gibea gekommen, das Benjamin gehört, ich und mein Kebsweib, um dort zu übernachten.

And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was murdered, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

Da machten sich die Bürger von Gibea wider mich auf und umringten meinetwegen des Nachts das Haus. Mich gedachten sie umzubringen, und mein Kebsweib haben sie geschwächt, daß sie starb.

And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about me by night; me they thought to have slain, and my concubine they forced, and she is dead.

Da ergriff ich mein Kebsweib und zerstückte sie und sandte sie in das ganze Gefilde des Erbteils Israels; denn sie haben ein Verbrechen und eine Schandtat begangen in Israel.

And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

Siehe, hier seid ihr allesamt, Kinder Israel: Gebet eure Meinung und euren Rat allhier!

Behold, ye children of Israel, all of you, give here your advice and counsel.

Und das ganze Volk stand auf wie ein Mann und sprach: Wir wollen nicht gehen, ein jeder nach seinem Zelte, und nicht einkehren, ein jeder in sein Haus;

And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn unto his house.

sondern dies ist die Sache, die wir jetzt an Gibea tun wollen: ziehen wir wider dasselbe nach dem Lose;

But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: [we will go up] against it by lot;

und nehmen wir zehn Männer von hundert, von allen Stämmen Israels, und hundert von tausend und tausend von zehntausend, um Zehrung für das Volk zu holen, damit, wenn sie nach Gibea-Benjamin kommen, man an ihm tue nach all der Schandtat, die es in Israel begangen hat.

and we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victuals for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.

Und alle Männer von Israel versammelten sich gegen die Stadt, wie ein Mann verbündet.

So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

Und die Stämme Israels sandten Männer in alle Geschlechter Benjamins und sprachen: Was ist das für eine Übeltat, die unter euch geschehen ist!

And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is come to pass among you?

So gebet nun die Männer, die Söhne Belials, heraus, die in Gibea sind, daß wir sie töten und das Böse aus Israel hinwegschaffen! Aber die Kinder Benjamin wollten nicht auf die Stimme ihrer Brüder, der Kinder Israel, hören;

Now therefore deliver up the men, the base fellows, that are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel.

und die Kinder Benjamin versammelten sich aus den Städten nach Gibea, um auszuziehen zum Streit mit den Kindern Israel.

And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

Und die Kinder Benjamin wurden an selbigem Tage aus den Städten gemustert: 26000 Mann, die das Schwert zogen; außer den Bewohnern von Gibea, die gemustert wurden: 700 auserlesene Männer.

And the children of Benjamin were numbered on that day out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

Unter all diesem Volke waren 700 auserlesene Männer, die links waren; diese alle schleuderten mit dem Steine aufs Haar und fehlten nicht.

Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at a hair-breadth, and not miss.

Und die Männer von Israel wurden gemustert, außer Benjamin: 400000 Mann, die das Schwert zogen; diese alle waren Kriegsmänner.

And the men of Israel, besides Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.

Und die Kinder Israel machten sich auf und zogen hinauf nach Bethel und befragten Gott, und sie sprachen: Wer von uns soll zuerst hinaufziehen zum Streit mit den Kindern Benjamin? Und Jehova sprach: Juda zuerst.

And the children of Israel arose, and went up to Beth-el, and asked counsel of God; and they said, Who shall go up for us first to battle against the children of Benjamin? And Jehovah said, Judah [shall go up] first.

Und die Kinder Israel machten sich am Morgen auf und lagerten sich wider Gibea.

And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.

Und die Männer von Israel zogen aus zum Streit mit Benjamin, und die Männer von Israel stellten sich wider sie in Schlachtordnung auf bei Gibea.

And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel set the battle in array against them at Gibeah.

Und die Kinder Benjamin zogen aus Gibea heraus, und sie streckten unter Israel an selbigem Tage 22000 Mann zu Boden.

And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites on that day twenty and two thousand men.

Und es ermannte sich das Volk, die Männer von Israel, und sie stellten sich wieder in Schlachtordnung auf an dem Orte, wo sie sich am ersten Tage aufgestellt hatten.

And the people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves, and set the battle again in array in the place where they set themselves in array the first day.

Und die Kinder Israel zogen hinauf und weinten vor Jehova bis an den Abend; und sie befragten Jehova und sprachen: Soll ich wiederum ausrücken zum Streit mit den Kindern meines Bruders Benjamin? Und Jehova sprach: Ziehet wider ihn hinauf.

And the children of Israel went up and wept before Jehovah until even; and they asked of Jehovah, saying, Shall I again draw nigh to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And Jehovah said, Go up against him.

Und die Kinder Israel nahten sich den Kindern Benjamin am zweiten Tage.

And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

Und Benjamin zog am zweiten Tage aus Gibea heraus, ihnen entgegen, und sie streckten nochmals unter den Kindern Israel 18000 Mann zu Boden; diese alle zogen das Schwert.

And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

Da zogen alle Kinder Israel und das ganze Volk hinauf und kamen nach Bethel, und sie weinten und blieben daselbst vor Jehova und fasteten an selbigem Tage bis zum Abend; und sie opferten Brandopfer und Friedensopfer vor Jehova.

Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto Beth-el, and wept, and sat there before Jehovah, and fasted that day until even; and they offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before Jehovah.

Und die Kinder Israel befragten Jehova - denn die Lade des Bundes Gottes war daselbst in jenen Tagen,

And the children of Israel asked of Jehovah (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

und Pinehas, der Sohn Eleasars, des Sohnes Aarons, stand vor ihr in jenen Tagen - und sprachen: Soll ich wiederum ausziehen zum Streit mit den Kindern meines Bruders Benjamin, oder soll ich aufhören? Und Jehova sprach: Ziehet hinauf, denn morgen werde ich ihn in deine Hand geben.

and Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And Jehovah said, Go up; for to-morrow I will deliver him into thy hand.

Und Israel legte einen Hinterhalt gegen Gibea ringsumher.

And Israel set liers-in-wait against Gibeah round about.

Und die Kinder Israel zogen am dritten Tage hinauf wider die Kinder Benjamin und stellten sich wider Gibea auf, wie die anderen Male.

And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and set themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

Und die Kinder Benjamin zogen heraus, dem Volke entgegen, wurden von der Stadt abgerissen und fingen an, etliche von dem Volke zu erschlagen, wie die anderen Male, bei dreißig Mann unter Israel, auf den Landstraßen, deren eine nach Bethel hinaufsteigt und die andere durch das Gefilde nach Gibea führt.

And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite and kill of the people, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to Beth-el, and the other to Gibeah, in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

Und die Kinder Benjamin sprachen: Sie sind vor uns geschlagen wie im Anfang. Die Kinder Israel aber sprachen: Laßt uns fliehen, daß wir sie von der Stadt abreißen auf die Landstraßen!

And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them away from the city unto the highways.

Und alle Männer von Israel machten sich auf von ihrem Orte und stellten sich zu Baal-Tamar auf, während der Hinterhalt Israels von seinem Orte hervorbrach aus dem Blachfelde von Gibea.

And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and set themselves in array at Baal-tamar: and the liers-in-wait of Israel brake forth out of their place, even out of Maareh-geba.

Und es kamen gegen Gibea zehntausend auserlesene Männer aus ganz Israel, und der Streit wurde heftig; jene aber wußten nicht, daß das Unglück sie erreichte.

And there came over against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore; but they knew not that evil was close upon them.

Und Jehova schlug Benjamin vor Israel, und die Kinder Israel streckten unter Benjamin an selbigem Tage 25100 Mann nieder; diese alle zogen das Schwert. -

And Jehovah smote Benjamin before Israel; and the children of Israel destroyed of Benjamin that day twenty and five thousand and a hundred men: all these drew the sword.

Und die Kinder Benjamin sahen, daß sie geschlagen waren. Und die Männer von Israel gaben Benjamin Raum, weil sie sich auf den Hinterhalt verließen, den sie wider Gibea gelegt hatten.

So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten; for the men of Israel gave place to Benjamin, because they trusted unto the liers-in-wait whom they had set against Gibeah.

Und der Hinterhalt eilte und überfiel Gibea; und der Hinterhalt zog hin und schlug die ganze Stadt mit der Schärfe des Schwertes.

And the liers-in-wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers-in-wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

Die Männer von Israel hatten sich aber mit dem Hinterhalt verabredet, eine große Rauchsäule aus der Stadt emporsteigen zu lassen.

Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers-in-wait was, that they should make a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city.

Und die Männer von Israel wandten sich um im Streit, und Benjamin hatte angefangen, unter den Männern von Israel etliche zu erschlagen, bei dreißig Mann; denn die sprachen: Sie sind ja gänzlich vor uns geschlagen, wie im vorigen Streit.

And the men of Israel turned in the battle, and Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons; for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.

Und der Brand fing an, aus der Stadt emporzusteigen wie eine Rauchsäule; und Benjamin wandte sich zurück, und siehe, die ganze Stadt ging in Feuer auf gen Himmel.

But when the cloud began to arise up out of the city in a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them; and, behold, the whole of the city went up [in smoke] to heaven.

Da wandten sich die Männer von Israel um, und die Männer von Benjamin wurden bestürzt; denn sie sahen, daß das Unglück sie erreicht hatte.

And the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed; for they saw that evil was come upon them.

Und sie wandten sich vor den Männern von Israel nach dem Wege zur Wüste; aber der Streit ereilte sie; und die aus den Städten kamen, streckten sie in ihrer Mitte nieder.

Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle followed hard after them; and they that came out of the cities destroyed them in the midst thereof.

Sie umzingelten Benjamin, jagten ihm nach, traten ihn nieder, wo er ausruhen wollte, bis vor Gibea, gegen Sonnenaufgang.

They inclosed the Benjamites round about, [and] chased them, [and] trod them down at [their] resting-place, as far as over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

Und es fielen von Benjamin 18000 Mann; diese alle waren tapfere Männer.

And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these [were] men of valor.

Da wandten sie sich und flohen der Wüste zu, nach dem Felsen Rimmon; aber die Israeliten hielten unter ihnen auf den Landstraßen eine Nachlese von fünftausend Mann, und setzten ihnen nach bis Gideom und erschlugen von ihnen zweitausend Mann.

And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men, and followed hard after them unto Gidom, and smote of them two thousand men.

So waren all der von Benjamin an selbigem Tage Gefallenen 25000 Mann, die das Schwert zogen; diese alle waren tapfere Männer.

So that all who fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these [were] men of valor.

Sechshundert Mann aber wandten sich und flohen der Wüste zu, nach dem Felsen Rimmon; und sie blieben am Felsen Rimmon vier Monate. -

But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon, and abode in the rock of Rimmon four months.

Und die Männer von Israel kehrten zu den Kindern Benjamin zurück und schlugen sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, von den Männern in den Städten bis zum Vieh, bis zu allem, was sich vorfand; auch alle die Städte, die sich vorfanden, steckten sie in Brand.

And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city, and the cattle, and all that they found: moreover all the cities which they found they set on fire.

Kapitel 21

Die Männer von Israel hatten aber zu Mizpa geschworen und gesagt: Niemand von uns soll seine Tochter den Benjaminitern zum Weibe geben!

Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.

Und das Volk kam nach Bethel, und sie blieben daselbst bis an den Abend vor Gott; und sie erhoben ihre Stimme und weinten sehr

And the people came to Beth-el, and sat there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore.

und sprachen: Warum, Jehova, Gott Israels, ist dieses in Israel geschehen, daß heute ein Stamm aus Israel vermißt wird?

And they said, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to-day one tribe lacking in Israel?

Und es geschah am anderen Tage, da machte sich das Volk früh auf, und sie bauten daselbst einen Altar und opferten Brandopfer und Friedensopfer.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.

Und die Kinder Israel sprachen: Wer von allen Stämmen Israels ist nicht in die Versammlung zu Jehova heraufgekommen? Denn ein großer Schwur war geschehen betreffs dessen, der nicht zu Jehova nach Mizpa heraufkäme, indem man sprach: Er soll gewißlich getötet werden!

And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up in the assembly unto Jehovah? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up unto Jehovah to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death.

Und die Kinder Israel ließen sich's gereuen über Benjamin, ihren Bruder, und sie sprachen: Heute ist ein Stamm von Israel abgehauen!

And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

Was sollen wir ihnen, den Übriggebliebenen, tun betreffs der Weiber? Wir haben ja bei Jehova geschworen, ihnen keine von unseren Töchtern zu Weibern zu geben.

How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by Jehovah that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?

Und sie sprachen: Gibt es irgend einen von den Stämmen Israels, der nicht zu Jehova nach Mizpa heraufgekommen ist? Und siehe, kein Mann von Jabes-Gilead war ins Lager, in die Versammlung, gekommen.

And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto Jehovah to Mizpah? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.

Und das Volk wurde gemustert, und siehe, kein Mann war da von den Bewohnern von Jabes-Gilead.

For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there.

Da sandte die Gemeinde zwölftausend Mann von den tapferen Männern dorthin, und sie geboten ihnen und sprachen: Gehet hin und schlaget die Bewohner von Jabes-Gilead mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, auch die Weiber und die Kinder!

And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.

Und dies ist es, was ihr tun sollt: alle Männlichen und alle Weiber, die den Beischlaf eines Mannes gekannt haben, sollt ihr verbannen.

And this is the thing that ye shall do: ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.

Und sie fanden unter den Bewohnern von Jabes-Gilead vierhundert Mädchen, Jungfrauen, die keinen Mann im Beischlaf erkannt hatten; und sie brachten sie ins Lager nach Silo, das im Lande Kanaan ist.

And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

Und die ganze Gemeinde sandte hin und redete zu den Kindern Benjamin, die am Felsen Rimmon waren, und entbot ihnen Frieden.

And the whole congregation sent and spake to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace unto them.

Und Benjamin kehrte in selbiger Zeit zurück; und sie gaben ihnen die Weiber, welche sie hatten leben lassen von den Weibern von Jabes-Gilead; aber sie fanden so nicht genug für sie.

And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.

Und das Volk ließ sich's gereuen wegen Benjamins, weil Jehova einen Riß gemacht hatte in den Stämmen Israels.

And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that Jehovah had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

Und die Ältesten der Gemeinde sprachen: Was sollen wir den Übriggebliebenen tun betreffs der Weiber? Denn die Weiber sind aus Benjamin vertilgt.

Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?

Und sie sprachen: Ein Besitztum soll sein für die Entronnenen von Benjamin, damit nicht ein Stamm aus Israel ausgetilgt werde.

And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel.

Wir aber, wir können ihnen keine Weiber von unseren Töchtern geben; denn die Kinder Israel haben geschworen und gesagt: Verflucht sei, wer den Benjaminitern ein Weib gibt!

Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.

Und sie sprachen: Siehe, ein Fest Jehovas ist von Jahr zu Jahr zu Silo, das nördlich von Bethel, gegen Sonnenaufgang von der Landstraße, die von Bethel nach Sichem hinaufgeht, und südlich von Lebona liegt.

And they said, Behold, there is a feast of Jehovah from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.

Und sie geboten den Kindern Benjamin und sprachen: Gehet hin und lauert in den Weinbergen;

And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,

und sehet zu, und siehe, wenn die Töchter von Silo herausziehen zum Reigentanze, so kommet hervor aus den Weinbergen und erhaschet euch unter den Töchtern von Silo ein jeder sein Weib, und ziehet hin in das Land Benjamin.

and see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

Und es soll geschehen, wenn ihre Väter oder ihre Brüder kommen, um mit uns zu rechten, so wollen wir zu ihnen sagen: Gewähret sie uns! denn wir haben nicht ein jeder sein Weib im Kriege empfangen; denn nicht ihr habt sie ihnen gegeben, daß ihr jetzt schuldig wäret.

And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come to complain unto us, that we will say unto them, Grant them graciously unto us, because we took not for each man [of them] his wife in battle, neither did ye give them unto them, else would ye now be guilty.

Und die Kinder Benjamin taten also und nahmen sich Weiber, nach ihrer Zahl, von den Tänzerinnen, die sie raubten. Und sie zogen fort und kehrten in ihr Erbteil zurück; und sie bauten die Städte wieder auf und wohnten darin.

And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they carried off: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them.

Und die Kinder Israel zogen in selbiger Zeit von dannen, ein jeder zu seinem Stamme und zu seinem Geschlecht; und sie zogen von dannen hinweg, ein jeder in sein Erbteil.

And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

In jenen Tagen war kein König in Israel; ein jeder tat, was recht war in seinen Augen.

In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
