A locust plague and the outpouring of the spirit
A short prophetic book responding to a devastating locust plague. The plague becomes the figure for a coming day of the Lord, and the book closes with an oracle of the spirit being poured out on all flesh — later cited at Pentecost in the book of Acts.

Höret dieses, ihr Alten, und nehmet es zu Ohren, alle ihr Bewohner des Landes! Ist solches in euren Tagen geschehen oder in den Tagen eurer Väter?
Hear this, you elders,
And listen, all you inhabitants of the land.
Has this ever happened in your days,
or in the days of your fathers?

Erzählet davon euren Kindern, und eure Kinder ihren Kindern, und ihre Kinder dem folgenden Geschlecht:
Tell your children about it,
and have your children tell their children,
and their children, another generation.

Was der Nager übriggelassen hatte, fraß die Heuschrecke; und was die Heuschrecke übriggelassen, fraß der Abfresser; und was der Abfresser übriggelassen, fraß der Vertilger.
What the swarming locust has left, the great locust has eaten.
What the great locust has left, the grasshopper has eaten.
What the grasshopper has left, the caterpillar has eaten.

Wachet auf, ihr Trunkenen, und weinet! und heulet, alle ihr Weinsäufer, über den Most, weil er weggenommen ist von eurem Munde!
Wake up, you drunkards, and weep!
Wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine;
for it is cut off from your mouth.

Denn eine Nation ist über mein Land heraufgezogen, mächtig und ohne Zahl; ihre Zähne sind Löwenzähne, und sie hat das Gebiß einer Löwin.
For a nation has come up on my land, strong, and without number.
His teeth are the teeth of a lion,
and he has the fangs of a lioness.

Sie hat meinen Weinstock zu einer Wüste gemacht und meinen Feigenbaum zerknickt; sie hat ihn gänzlich abgeschält und hingeworfen, seine Ranken sind weiß geworden.
He has laid my vine waste,
and stripped my fig tree.
He has stripped its bark, and thrown it away.
Its branches are made white.

Wehklage wie eine Jungfrau, die mit Sacktuch umgürtet ist wegen des Gatten ihrer Jugend!
Mourn like a virgin dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth!

Speisopfer und Trankopfer sind weggenommen vom Hause Jehovas; es trauern die Priester, die Diener Jehovas. -
The meal offering and the drink offering are cut off from Yahweh’s house.
The priests, Yahweh’s ministers, mourn.

Das Feld ist verwüstet, es trauert der Erdboden; denn das Korn ist verwüstet, der Most ist vertrocknet, verwelkt das Öl.
The field is laid waste.
The land mourns, for the grain is destroyed,
The new wine has dried up,
and the oil languishes.

Seid beschämt, ihr Ackersleute, heulet, ihr Winzer, über den Weizen und über die Gerste! Denn die Ernte des Feldes ist zu Grunde gegangen;
Be confounded, you farmers!
Wail, you vineyard keepers;
for the wheat and for the barley;
for the harvest of the field has perished.

der Weinstock ist verdorrt und der Feigenbaum verwelkt; Granate, auch Palme und Apfelbaum, alle Bäume des Feldes sind verdorrt; ja, verdorrt ist die Freude von den Menschenkindern. -
The vine has dried up, and the fig tree withered;
the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree,
even all of the trees of the field are withered;
for joy has withered away from the sons of men.

Umgürtet euch und wehklaget, ihr Priester; heulet, ihr Diener des Altars! kommet, übernachtet in Sacktuch, ihr Diener meines Gottes! denn Speisopfer und Trankopfer sind dem Hause eures Gottes entzogen.
Put on sackcloth and mourn, you priests!
Wail, you ministers of the altar.
Come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God,
for the meal offering and the drink offering are withheld from your God’s house.

Heiliget ein Fasten, rufet eine Festversammlung aus; versammelt die Ältesten, alle Bewohner des Landes, zum Hause Jehovas, eures Gottes, und schreiet zu Jehova!
Sanctify a fast.
Call a solemn assembly.
Gather the elders,
and all the inhabitants of the land, to the house of Yahweh, your God,
and cry to Yahweh.

Ach über den Tag! denn nahe ist der Tag Jehovas, und er kommt wie eine Verwüstung vom Allmächtigen.
Alas for the day!
For the day of Yahweh is at hand,
and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

Ist nicht die Speise vor unseren Augen weggenommen, Freude und Frohlocken von dem Hause unseres Gottes?
Isn’t the food cut off before our eyes;
joy and gladness from the house of our God?
17
Vermodert sind die Samenkörner unter ihren Schollen; verödet sind die Vorratshäuser, zerfallen die Scheunen, denn das Korn ist verdorrt.
The seeds rot under their clods.
The granaries are laid desolate.
The barns are broken down, for the grain has withered.
18
Wie stöhnt das Vieh! die Rinderherden sind bestürzt, weil sie keine Weide haben; auch die Kleinviehherden büßen.
How the animals groan!
The herds of livestock are perplexed, because they have no pasture.
Yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.
19
Zu dir, Jehova, rufe ich; denn ein Feuer hat die Auen der Steppe verzehrt, und eine Flamme alle Bäume des Feldes versengt.
Yahweh, I cry to you,
For the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness,
and the flame has burned all the trees of the field.
20
Auch die Tiere des Feldes schreien lechzend zu dir; denn vertrocknet sind die Wasserbäche, und ein Feuer hat die Auen der Steppe verzehrt.
Yes, the animals of the field pant to you,
for the water brooks have dried up,
And the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

Stoßet in die Posaune auf Zion, und blaset Lärm auf meinem heiligen Berge! Beben sollen alle Bewohner des Landes; denn es kommt der Tag Jehovas, denn er ist nahe:
Blow the trumpet in Zion,
and sound an alarm in my holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
for the day of Yahweh comes,
for it is close at hand:

ein Tag der Finsternis und der Dunkelheit, ein Tag des Gewölks und der Wolkennacht. Wie die Morgendämmerung ist es ausgebreitet über die Berge, ein großes und mächtiges Volk, desgleichen von Ewigkeit her nicht gewesen ist und nach ihm nicht mehr sein wird bis in die Jahre der Geschlechter und Geschlechter.
A day of darkness and gloominess,
a day of clouds and thick darkness.
As the dawn spreading on the mountains,
a great and strong people;
there has never been the like,
neither will there be any more after them,
even to the years of many generations.

Vor ihm her verzehrt das Feuer, und nach ihm lodert die Flamme; vor ihm ist das Land wie der Garten Eden, und nach ihm eine öde Wüste, und auch keine Entronnenen läßt es übrig.
A fire devours before them,
and behind them, a flame burns.
The land is as the garden of Eden before them,
and behind them, a desolate wilderness.
Yes, and no one has escaped them.

Sein Aussehen ist wie das Aussehen von Rossen; und wie Reitpferde, also rennen sie.
Their appearance is as the appearance of horses,
and as horsemen, so do they run.

Gleich Wagengerassel hüpfen sie auf den Gipfeln der Berge, gleich dem Prasseln der Feuerflamme, welche Stoppeln verzehrt; sie sind wie ein mächtiges Volk, zum Kampfe gerüstet.
Like the noise of chariots on the tops of the mountains do they leap,
like the noise of a flame of fire that devours the stubble,
as a strong people set in battle array.

Vor ihm zittern die Völker, alle Angesichter erblassen.
At their presence the peoples are in anguish.
All faces have grown pale.
7
Sie rennen wie Helden, wie Kriegsleute ersteigen sie die Mauer; und sie ziehen ein jeder auf seinem Wege, und ihre Pfade wechseln sie nicht;
They run like mighty men.
They climb the wall like warriors.
They each march in his line, and they don’t swerve off course.
8
und keiner drängt den anderen, sie ziehen jeder einzeln auf seiner Bahn; und sie stürzen zwischen den Waffen hindurch und verwunden sich nicht.
Neither does one jostle another;
they march everyone in his path,
and they burst through the defenses,
and don’t break ranks.

Sie laufen in der Stadt umher, rennen auf die Mauer, steigen in die Häuser; durch die Fenster dringen sie ein wie der Dieb.
They rush on the city.
They run on the wall.
They climb up into the houses.
They enter in at the windows like thieves.
10
Vor ihnen erbebt die Erde, erzittert der Himmel; Sonne und Mond verfinstern sich, und die Sterne verhalten ihren Glanz.
The earth quakes before them.
The heavens tremble.
The sun and the moon are darkened,
and the stars withdraw their shining.

Und Jehova läßt vor seinem Heere her seine Stimme erschallen, denn sein Heerlager ist sehr groß, denn der Vollstrecker seines Wortes ist mächtig; denn groß ist der Tag Jehovas und sehr furchtbar, und wer kann ihn ertragen?
Yahweh thunders his voice before his army;
for his forces are very great;
for he is strong who obeys his command;
for the day of Yahweh is great and very awesome,
and who can endure it?

Aber auch jetzt noch, spricht Jehova, kehret um zu mir mit eurem ganzen Herzen, und mit Fasten und mit Weinen und mit Klagen.
“Yet even now,” says Yahweh, “turn to me with all your heart,
and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.”
13
Und zerreißet euer Herz und nicht eure Kleider, und kehret um zu Jehova, eurem Gott; denn er ist gnädig und barmherzig, langsam zum Zorn und groß an Güte, und läßt sich des Übels gereuen.
Tear your heart, and not your garments,
and turn to Yahweh, your God;
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness,
and relents from sending calamity.

Wer weiß? er möchte umkehren und es sich gereuen lassen, und er möchte Segen hinter sich zurücklassen: Speisopfer und Trankopfer für Jehova, euren Gott.
Who knows? He may turn and relent,
and leave a blessing behind him,
even a meal offering and a drink offering to Yahweh, your God.

Stoßet in die Posaune auf Zion, heiliget ein Fasten, rufet eine Festversammlung aus!
Blow the trumpet in Zion!
Sanctify a fast.
Call a solemn assembly.

Versammelt das Volk, heiliget eine Versammlung, bringet die Ältesten zusammen, versammelt die Kinder und die Säuglinge an den Brüsten; der Bräutigam trete aus seiner Kammer, und die Braut aus ihrem Gemach!
Gather the people.
Sanctify the assembly.
Assemble the elders.
Gather the children, and those who nurse from breasts.
Let the bridegroom go out of his room,
and the bride out of her room.

Die Priester, die Diener Jehovas, sollen weinen zwischen der Halle und dem Altar und sprechen: Schone, Jehova, deines Volkes und gib nicht dein Erbteil der Schmähung hin, daß sie den Nationen zur Spottrede seien! Warum soll man unter den Völkern sagen: Wo ist ihr Gott?
Let the priests, the ministers of Yahweh, weep between the porch and the altar,
and let them say, “Spare your people, Yahweh,
and don’t give your heritage to reproach,
that the nations should rule over them.
Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’”

Dann eifert Jehova für sein Land, und er hat Mitleid mit seinem Volke.
Then Yahweh was jealous for his land,
And had pity on his people.
19
Und Jehova antwortet und spricht zu seinem Volke: Siehe, ich sende euch das Korn und den Most und das Öl, daß ihr davon satt werdet; und ich werde euch nicht mehr zum Hohne machen unter den Nationen.
Yahweh answered his people,
“Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil,
and you will be satisfied with them;
and I will no more make you a reproach among the nations.
20
Und ich werde den von Norden Kommenden von euch entfernen und ihn in ein dürres und wüstes Land vertreiben, seinen Vortrab in das vordere Meer und seinen Nachtrab in das hintere Meer; und sein Gestank wird aufsteigen, und aufsteigen sein übler Geruch, weil er Großes getan hat.
But I will remove the northern army far away from you,
and will drive it into a barren and desolate land,
its front into the eastern sea,
and its back into the western sea;
and its stench will come up,
and its bad smell will rise.”
Surely he has done great things.
21
Fürchte dich nicht, Erde; frohlocke und freue dich! denn Jehova tut Großes.
Land, don’t be afraid.
Be glad and rejoice, for Yahweh has done great things.
22
Fürchtet euch nicht, ihr Tiere des Feldes! denn es grünen die Auen der Steppe; denn der Baum trägt seine Frucht, der Feigenbaum und der Weinstock geben ihren Ertrag.
Don’t be afraid, you animals of the field;
for the pastures of the wilderness spring up,
for the tree bears its fruit.
The fig tree and the vine yield their strength.

Und ihr, Kinder Zions, frohlocket und freuet euch in Jehova, eurem Gott! Denn er gibt euch den Frühregen nach rechtem Maße, und er läßt euch Regen herabkommen: Frühregen und Spätregen wie zuvor.
“Be glad then, you children of Zion,
and rejoice in Yahweh, your God;
for he gives you the former rain in just measure,
and he causes the rain to come down for you,
the former rain and the latter rain,
as before.
24
Und die Tennen werden voll Getreide sein, und die Kufen überfließen von Most und Öl.
The threshing floors will be full of wheat,
and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.
25
Und ich werde euch die Jahre erstatten, welche die Heuschrecke, der Abfresser und der Vertilger und der Nager gefressen haben - mein großes Heer, das ich unter euch gesandt habe.
I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten,
the great locust, the grasshopper, and the caterpillar,
my great army, which I sent among you.

Und ihr werdet essen, essen und satt werden, und werdet den Namen Jehovas, eures Gottes, preisen, der Wunderbares an euch getan hat. Und mein Volk soll nimmermehr beschämt werden.
You will have plenty to eat, and be satisfied,
and will praise the name of Yahweh, your God,
who has dealt wondrously with you;
and my people will never again be disappointed.
27
Und ihr werdet wissen, daß ich in Israels Mitte bin, und daß ich, Jehova, euer Gott bin, und keiner sonst. Und mein Volk soll nimmermehr beschämt werden.
You will know that I am among Israel,
and that I am Yahweh, your God, and there is no one else;
and my people will never again be disappointed.

Und danach wird es geschehen, daß ich meinen Geist ausgießen werde über alles Fleisch; und eure Söhne und eure Töchter werden weissagen, eure Greise werden Träume haben, eure Jünglinge werden Gesichte sehen.
“It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
and your sons and your daughters will prophesy.
Your old men will dream dreams.
Your young men will see visions.

Und selbst über die Knechte und über die Mägde werde ich meinen Geist ausgießen in jenen Tagen. -
And also on the servants and on the handmaids in those days,
I will pour out my Spirit.
30
Und ich werde Wunder geben im Himmel und auf der Erde: Blut und Feuer und Rauchsäulen;
I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
blood, fire, and pillars of smoke.
31
die Sonne wird sich in Finsternis verwandeln und der Mond in Blut, ehe der Tag Jehovas kommt, der große und furchtbare. -
The sun will be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood,
before the great and terrible day of Yahweh comes.
32
Und es wird geschehen, ein jeder, der den Namen Jehovas anrufen wird, wird errettet werden; denn auf dem Berge Zion und in Jerusalem wird Errettung sein, wie Jehova gesprochen hat, und unter den Übriggebliebenen, welche Jehova berufen wird.
It will happen that whoever will call on Yahweh’s name shall be saved;
for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape,
as Yahweh has said,
and among the remnant, those whom Yahweh calls.

Denn siehe, in jenen Tagen und zu jener Zeit, wenn ich die Gefangenschaft Judas und Jerusalems wenden werde,
“For, behold, in those days,
and in that time,
when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,
2
dann werde ich alle Nationen versammeln und sie in das Tal Josaphat hinabführen; und ich werde daselbst mit ihnen rechten über mein Volk und mein Erbteil Israel, welches sie unter die Nationen zerstreut haben;
I will gather all nations,
and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat;
and I will execute judgment on them there for my people,
and for my heritage, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations.
They have divided my land,

und mein Land haben sie geteilt, und über mein Volk das Los geworfen; und den Knaben haben sie um eine Hure gegeben, und das Mädchen um Wein verkauft, den sie getrunken haben. -
and have cast lots for my people,
and have given a boy for a prostitute,
and sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.

Und auch ihr, was wollt ihr mir, Tyrus und Zidon und alle ihr Bezirke Philistäas? Wollt ihr mir eine Tat vergelten, oder wollt ihr mir etwas antun? Schnell, eilends werde ich euer Tun auf euren Kopf zurückbringen,
“Yes, and what are you to me, Tyre, and Sidon,
and all the regions of Philistia?
Will you repay me?
And if you repay me,
I will swiftly and speedily return your repayment on your own head.

daß ihr mein Silber und mein Gold weggenommen und meine besten Kleinode in eure Tempel gebracht,
Because you have taken my silver and my gold,
and have carried my finest treasures into your temples,
6
und die Kinder Judas und die Kinder Jerusalems den Kindern der Griechen verkauft habt, um sie weit von ihrer Grenze zu entfernen.
and have sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the sons of the Greeks,
that you may remove them far from their border.
7
Siehe, ich will sie erwecken von dem Orte, wohin ihr sie verkauft habt, und will euer Tun auf euren Kopf zurückbringen.
Behold, I will stir them up out of the place where you have sold them,
and will return your repayment on your own head;
8
Und ich werde eure Söhne und eure Töchter in die Hand der Kinder Judas verkaufen; und diese werden sie an die Sabäer verkaufen, an eine ferne Nation; denn Jehova hat geredet.
and I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hands of the children of Judah,
and they will sell them to the men of Sheba,
to a faraway nation,
for Yahweh has spoken it.”

Rufet dieses aus unter den Nationen, heiliget einen Krieg, erwecket die Helden; es sollen herankommen und heraufziehen alle Kriegsmänner!
Proclaim this among the nations:
“Prepare for war!
Stir up the mighty men.
Let all the warriors draw near.
Let them come up.
10
Schmiedet eure Pflugmesser zu Schwertern und eure Winzermesser zu Speeren; der Schwache sage: Ich bin ein Held!
Beat your plowshares into swords,
and your pruning hooks into spears.
Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’
11
Eilet und kommet her, alle ihr Nationen ringsum, und versammelt euch! Dahin, Jehova, sende deine Helden hinab!
Hurry and come, all you surrounding nations,
and gather yourselves together.”
Cause your mighty ones to come down there, Yahweh.
12
Die Nationen sollen sich aufmachen und hinabziehen in das Tal Josaphat; denn dort werde ich sitzen, um alle Nationen ringsum zu richten.
“Let the nations arouse themselves,
and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat;
for there will I sit to judge all the surrounding nations.
13
Leget die Sichel an, denn die Ernte ist reif; kommet, stampfet, denn die Kelter ist voll, die Kufen fließen über! Denn groß ist ihre Bosheit. -
Put in the sickle;
for the harvest is ripe.
Come, tread, for the wine press is full,
the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great.”

Getümmel, Getümmel im Tale der Entscheidung; denn nahe ist der Tag Jehovas im Tale der Entscheidung.
Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!
For the day of Yahweh is near, in the valley of decision.
15
Die Sonne und der Mond verfinstern sich, und die Sterne verhalten ihren Glanz.
The sun and the moon are darkened,
and the stars withdraw their shining.
16
Und Jehova brüllt aus Zion und läßt aus Jerusalem seine Stimme erschallen, und Himmel und Erde erbeben. Und Jehova ist eine Zuflucht für sein Volk und eine Feste für die Kinder Israel.
Yahweh will roar from Zion,
and thunder from Jerusalem;
and the heavens and the earth will shake;
but Yahweh will be a refuge to his people,
and a stronghold to the children of Israel.
17
Und ihr werdet erkennen, daß ich, Jehova, euer Gott bin, der auf Zion wohnt, meinem heiligen Berge. Und Jerusalem wird heilig sein, und Fremde werden es nicht mehr durchziehen.
“So you will know that I am Yahweh, your God,
dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain.
Then Jerusalem will be holy,
and no strangers will pass through her any more.

Und es wird geschehen, an jenem Tage, da werden die Berge von Most triefen, und die Hügel von Milch fließen, und alle Bäche Judas werden von Wasser fließen; und eine Quelle wird aus dem Hause Jehovas hervorbrechen und das Tal Sittim bewässern.
It will happen in that day,
that the mountains will drop down sweet wine,
the hills will flow with milk,
all the brooks of Judah will flow with waters,
and a fountain will flow out from Yahweh’s house,
and will water the valley of Shittim.

Ägypten wird zur Einöde und Edom zu einer öden Wüste werden wegen der Gewalttat an den Kindern Judas, weil sie in ihrem Lande unschuldiges Blut vergossen haben.
Egypt will be a desolation,
and Edom will be a desolate wilderness,
for the violence done to the children of Judah,
because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
20
Aber Juda soll ewiglich bewohnt werden, und Jerusalem von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht.
But Judah will be inhabited forever,
and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
21
Und ich werde sie von ihrem Blute reinigen, von dem ich sie nicht gereinigt hatte. Und Jehova wird in Zion wohnen.
I will cleanse their blood,
that I have not cleansed:
for Yahweh dwells in Zion.”
