A continuation of the Samuel narrative, focused on David's consolidation of the monarchy, the capture of Jerusalem, the dynastic promise, and the turbulent later years of his reign — including the rebellions of Absalom and Sheba.

Kapitel 1

Und es geschah nach dem Tode Sauls, als David von der Schlacht der Amalekiter zurückgekommen war, da blieb David zwei Tage zu Ziklag.

And it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

Und es geschah am dritten Tage, siehe, da kam ein Mann aus dem Heerlager Sauls, seine Kleider waren zerrissen, und Erde war auf seinem Haupte; und als er zu David kam, fiel er zur Erde und warf sich nieder.

it came to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

Und David sprach zu ihm: Woher kommst du? Und er sprach zu ihm: Ich bin aus dem Heerlager Israels entronnen.

And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.

Und David sprach zu ihm: Wie steht die Sache? berichte mir doch. Und er sagte: Das Volk ist aus dem Streit geflohen, und auch viele von dem Volke sind gefallen und gestorben, und auch Saul und sein Sohn Jonathan sind tot.

And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, The people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.

Und David sprach zu dem Jüngling, der ihm berichtete: Wie weißt du, daß Saul und sein Sohn Jonathan tot sind?

And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?

Und der Jüngling, der ihm berichtete, sprach: Ich geriet zufällig auf das Gebirge Gilboa, und siehe, Saul lehnte sich auf seinen Speer; und siehe, die Wagen und die Reiter setzten ihm hart nach.

And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and the horsemen followed hard after him.

Und er wandte sich um und sah mich und rief mir zu, und ich sprach: Hier bin ich.

And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

Und er sprach zu mir: Wer bist du? Und ich sprach zu ihm: Ich bin ein Amalekiter.

And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

Und er sprach zu mir: Tritt doch her zu mir und töte mich, denn die Verwirrung hat mich ergriffen; denn mein Leben ist noch ganz in mir!

And he said unto me, Stand, I pray thee, beside me, and slay me; for anguish hath taken hold of me, because my life is yet whole in me.

Da trat ich zu ihm hin und tötete ihn, denn ich wußte, daß er seinen Fall nicht überleben würde. Und ich nahm das Diadem, das auf seinem Haupte, und die Armspange, die an seinem Arme war, und habe sie zu meinem Herrn hierher gebracht.

So I stood beside him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

Da faßte David seine Kleider und zerriß sie; und alle Männer, die bei ihm waren, taten ebenso.

Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

Und sie klagten und weinten und fasteten bis an den Abend um Saul und um seinen Sohn Jonathan und um das Volk Jehovas und um das Haus Israel, weil sie durchs Schwert gefallen waren.

and they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

Und David sprach zu dem Jüngling, der ihm berichtete: Woher bist du? Und er sprach: Ich bin der Sohn eines amalekitischen Fremdlings.

And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.

Und David sprach zu ihm: Wie hast du dich nicht gefürchtet, deine Hand auszustrecken, um den Gesalbten Jehovas zu verderben?

And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy Jehovah`s anointed?

Und David rief einen von den Knaben und sprach: Tritt herzu, falle über ihn her! Und er erschlug ihn, und er starb.

And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him, so that he died.

Und David sprach zu ihm: Dein Blut komme auf dein Haupt! denn dein Mund hat wider dich gezeugt und gesprochen: Ich habe den Gesalbten Jehovas getötet.

And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain Jehovah`s anointed.

Und David stimmte dieses Klagelied an über Saul und über Jonathan, seinen Sohn;

And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son

und er befahl, daß man die Kinder Juda das Lied von dem Bogen lehre; siehe, es ist geschrieben im Buche Jaschar:

(and he bade them teach the children of Judah [the song of] the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):

Deine Zierde, Israel, ist erschlagen auf deinen Höhen! wie sind die Helden gefallen!

Thy glory, O Israel, is slain upon thy high places! How are the mighty fallen!

Berichtet es nicht zu Gath, verkündet die Botschaft nicht in den Straßen Askalons, daß sich nicht freuen die Töchter der Philister, daß nicht frohlocken die Töchter der Unbeschnittenen!

Tell it not in Gath, Publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon; Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

Berge von Gilboa, nicht Tau noch Regen sei auf euch, noch Gefilde der Hebopfer! denn dort ward weggeworfen der Schild der Helden, der Schild Sauls, nicht gesalbt mit Öl.

Ye mountains of Gilboa, Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of offerings: For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.

Von dem Blute der Erschlagenen, von dem Fette der Helden wich Jonathans Bogen nicht zurück, und Sauls Schwert kehrte nicht leer wieder.

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan turned not back, And the sword of Saul returned not empty.

Saul und Jonathan, die Geliebten und Holdseligen in ihrem Leben, sind auch in ihrem Tode nicht getrennt; sie waren schneller als Adler, stärker als Löwen.

Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they were not divided: They were swifter than eagles, They were stronger than lions.

Töchter Israels, weinet um Saul, der euch köstlich kleidete in Karmesin, der goldenen Schmuck zog über eure Kleider!

Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, Who clothed you in scarlet delicately, Who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

Wie sind die Helden gefallen mitten im Streit! Wie ist Jonathan erschlagen auf deinen Höhen!

How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slain upon thy high places.

Mir ist wehe um dich, mein Bruder Jonathan! holdselig warst du mir sehr; wunderbar war mir deine Liebe, mehr als Frauenliebe!

I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: Very pleasant hast thou been unto me: Thy love to me was wonderful, Passing the love of women.

Wie sind die Helden gefallen, und umgekommen die Rüstzeuge des Streites!

How are the mighty fallen, And the weapons of war perished!

Kapitel 2

Und es geschah hernach, da befragte David Jehova und sprach: Soll ich in eine der Städte Judas hinaufziehen? Und Jehova sprach zu ihm: Ziehe hinauf. Und David sprach: Wohin soll ich hinaufziehen? Und er sprach: Nach Hebron.

And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.

Und David zog dort hinauf, und auch seine zwei Weiber, Achinoam, die Jisreelitin, und Abigail, das Weib Nabals, des Karmeliters.

So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

Auch seine Männer, die bei ihm waren, ließ David hinaufziehen, einen jeden mit seinem Hause; und sie wohnten in den Städten Hebrons.

And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

Und die Männer von Juda kamen und salbten daselbst David zum König über das Haus Juda. Und man berichtete David und sprach: Die Männer von Jabes-Gilead sind es, die Saul begraben haben.

And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, The men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.

Da sandte David Boten zu den Männern von Jabes-Gilead und ließ ihnen sagen: Gesegnet seiet ihr von Jehova, daß ihr diese Güte an eurem Herrn, an Saul, erwiesen und ihn begraben habt!

And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of Jehovah, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.

Und so erweise nun Jehova Güte und Treue an euch; und auch ich will euch dieses Gute vergelten, weil ihr diese Sache getan habt.

And now Jehovah show lovingkindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.

Und nun lasset eure Hände erstarken und seid wackere Männer; denn Saul, euer Herr, ist tot, und auch hat das Haus Juda mich zum König über sich gesalbt.

Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be ye valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

Abner aber, der Sohn Ners, der Heeroberste Sauls, nahm Isboseth, den Sohn Sauls, und führte ihn hinüber nach Machanaim;

Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul`s host, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;

und er machte ihn zum König über Gilead und über die Asuriter und über Jisreel, und über Ephraim und über Benjamin und über das ganze Israel.

and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

Vierzig Jahre war Isboseth, der Sohn Sauls, alt, als er König wurde über Israel, und er regierte zwei Jahre; nur das Haus Juda folgte David nach.

Ish-bosheth, Saul`s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

Und die Zahl der Tage, welche David in Hebron über das Haus Juda König war, betrug sieben Jahre und sechs Monate.

And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

Und Abner, der Sohn Ners, und die Knechte Isboseths, des Sohnes Sauls, zogen aus von Machanaim nach Gibeon;

And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

und auch Joab, der Sohn der Zeruja, und die Knechte Davids zogen aus; und sie stießen bei dem Teiche von Gibeon aufeinander. Und diese ließen sich nieder auf dieser Seite des Teiches, und jene auf jener Seite des Teiches.

And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

Da sprach Abner zu Joab: Laß doch die Jünglinge sich aufmachen und vor uns spielen! Und Joab sprach: Sie mögen sich aufmachen.

And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

Und sie machten sich auf und gingen hinüber, nach der Zahl: zwölf für Benjamin und für Isboseth, den Sohn Sauls, und zwölf von den Knechten Davids.

Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

Und sie ergriffen einer den anderen beim Kopfe, und jeder stieß sein Schwert dem anderen in die Seite, und sie fielen zusammen. Und man nannte selbigen Ort Helkath-Hazzurim, der bei Gibeon ist.

And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and [thrust] his sword in his fellow`s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

Und der Streit wurde überaus heftig an jenem Tage; und Abner und die Männer von Israel wurden vor den Knechten Davids geschlagen.

And the battle was very sore that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

Und es waren daselbst drei Söhne der Zeruja: Joab und Abisai und Asael. Asael aber war schnell auf seinen Füßen, wie eine der Gazellen, die auf dem Felde sind.

And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.

Und Asael jagte Abner nach und bog nicht aus, weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken hinter Abner weg.

And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

Da wandte sich Abner um und sprach: Bist du es, Asael? Und er sprach: Ich bin's.

Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Is it thou, Asahel? And he answered, It is I.

Da sprach Abner zu ihm: Biege aus zu deiner Rechten oder zu deiner Linken, und greife dir einen von den Jünglingen und nimm dir seine Rüstung! Aber Asael wollte nicht hinter ihm weg weichen.

And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.

Da sprach Abner nochmals zu Asael: Weiche hinter mir weg! Warum soll ich dich zu Boden schlagen? und wie könnte ich mein Angesicht erheben zu deinem Bruder Joab?

And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?

Aber er weigerte sich zu weichen. Da schlug ihn Abner mit dem hinteren Ende des Speeres in den Bauch, daß der Speer hinten herausfuhr; und er fiel daselbst und starb an seiner Stelle. Und es geschah, jeder, der an den Ort kam, wo Asael gefallen und gestorben war, der blieb stehen.

Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

Und Joab und Abisai jagten Abner nach; und die Sonne ging unter, als sie zum Hügel Amma kamen, der vor Giach liegt, auf dem Wege zur Wüste Gibeon.

But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

Und die Kinder Benjamin sammelten sich hinter Abner her und wurden zu einem Haufen, und sie stellten sich auf den Gipfel eines Hügels.

And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.

Und Abner rief Joab zu und sprach: Soll das Schwert immerfort fressen? weißt du nicht, daß zuletzt Erbitterung sein wird? und wie lange willst du nicht dem Volke sagen, von der Verfolgung ihrer Brüder umzukehren?

Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?

Da sprach Joab: So wahr Gott lebt, wenn du nicht geredet hättest, dann wäre schon seit dem Morgen das Volk weggezogen, ein jeder von der Verfolgung seines Bruders!

And Joab said, As God liveth, if thou hadst not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother.

Und Joab stieß in die Posaune; da blieb alles Volk stehen, und sie jagten Israel nicht mehr nach und fuhren nicht mehr fort zu streiten.

So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.

Und Abner und seine Männer zogen durch die Ebene jene ganze Nacht, und sie setzten über den Jordan und durchzogen das ganze Bitron und kamen nach Machanaim.

And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.

Joab aber kehrte um von der Verfolgung Abners und versammelte das ganze Volk; da wurden von den Knechten Davids neunzehn Mann vermißt und Asael.

And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David`s servants nineteen men and Asahel.

Die Knechte Davids aber hatten von Benjamin und unter den Männern Abners viele erschlagen; 360 Mann waren tot.

But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner`s men, [so that] three hundred and threescore men died.

Und sie hoben Asael auf und begruben ihn in dem Begräbnis seines Vaters, das zu Bethlehem war. Und Joab und seine Männer gingen die ganze Nacht, und das Licht brach ihnen an zu Hebron.

And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and the day brake upon them at Hebron.

Kapitel 3

Und der Streit war lang zwischen dem Hause Sauls und dem Hause Davids; David aber wurde immerfort stärker, während das Haus Sauls immerfort schwächer wurde.

Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: and David waxed stronger and stronger, but the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.

Und es wurden dem David Söhne in Hebron geboren: Sein Erstgeborener war Amnon, von Achinoam, der Jisreelitin;

And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his first-born was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

und sein zweiter Kileab, von Abigail, dem Weibe Nabals, des Karmeliters; und der dritte Absalom, der Sohn Maakas, der Tochter Talmais, des Königs von Gesur;

and his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

und der vierte Adonija, der Sohn Haggiths; und der fünfte Schephatja, der Sohn Abitals;

and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

und der sechste Jithream, von Egla, dem Weibe Davids. Diese wurden dem David in Hebron geboren.

and the sixth, Ithream, of Eglah, David`s wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

Und es geschah, während der Streit war zwischen dem Hause Sauls und dem Hause Davids, da stand Abner dem Hause Sauls mutig bei.

And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong in the house of Saul.

Und Saul hatte ein Kebsweib, ihr Name war Rizpa, die Tochter Ajas. Und Isboseth sprach zu Abner: Warum bist du zu dem Kebsweibe meines Vaters eingegangen?

Now Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and [Ish-bosheth] said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father`s concubine?

Da ergrimmte Abner sehr über die Worte Isboseths und sprach: Bin ich ein Hundskopf, der es mit Juda hält? Heute erweise ich Güte an dem Hause deines Vaters Saul, an seinen Brüdern und an seinen Freunden, und ich habe dich nicht in die Hand Davids überliefert; und du wirfst mir heute das Vergehen mit diesem Weibe vor?

Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog`s head that belongeth to Judah? This day do I show kindness unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David; and yet thou chargest me this day with a fault concerning this woman.

So möge Gott Abner tun und so ihm hinzufügen, wenn ich nicht, wie Jehova dem David geschworen hat, ihm also tun werde:

God do so to Abner, and more also, if, as Jehovah hath sworn to David, I do not even so to him;

das Königtum von dem Hause Sauls abzuwenden und den Thron Davids aufzurichten über Israel und über Juda, von Dan bis Beerseba!

to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba.

Und er konnte Abner kein Wort mehr erwidern, weil er ihn fürchtete.

And he could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.

Und Abner sandte Boten für sich zu David und sprach: Wessen ist das Land? und er sprach: Mache einen Bund mit mir; und siehe, meine Hand wird mit dir sein, um ganz Israel dir zuzuwenden.

And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying [also], Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.

Und David sprach: Gut, ich will einen Bund mit dir machen; nur eine Sache fordere ich von dir, nämlich: Du sollst mein Angesicht nicht sehen, du bringest denn zuvor Michal, die Tochter Sauls, wenn du kommst, um mein Angesicht zu sehen.

And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee; but one thing I require of thee: that is, thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal, Saul`s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.

Und David sandte Boten zu Isboseth, dem Sohne Sauls, und ließ ihm sagen: Gib mir Michal, mein Weib, die ich mir verlobt habe um hundert Vorhäute der Philister.

And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth, Saul`s son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to me for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.

Da sandte Isboseth hin und ließ sie holen von ihrem Manne, von Paltiel, dem Sohne des Lais.

And Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Paltiel the son of Laish.

Und ihr Mann ging mit ihr und folgte ihr weinend nach bis Bachurim. Da sprach Abner zu ihm: Geh, kehre um! Und er kehrte um.

And her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return: and he returned.

Und Abner hatte sich mit den Ältesten Israels unterredet und gesagt: Früher schon habt ihr David zum König über euch begehrt;

And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, In times past ye sought for David to be king over you:

so handelt nun; denn Jehova hat von David geredet und gesagt: Durch die Hand Davids, meines Knechtes, will ich mein Volk Israel erretten aus der Hand der Philister und aus der Hand aller seiner Feinde.

now then do it; for Jehovah hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.

Und Abner redete auch zu den Ohren Benjamins. Und Abner ging auch hin, um zu den Ohren Davids in Hebron alles zu reden, was gut war in den Augen Israels und in den Augen des ganzen Hauses Benjamin.

And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and to the whole house of Benjamin.

Als nun Abner, und zwanzig Männer mit ihm, zu David nach Hebron kam, machte David Abner und den Männern, die mit ihm waren, ein Mahl.

So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast.

Und Abner sprach zu David: Ich will mich aufmachen und hingehen, und ganz Israel zu meinem Herrn, dem König, versammeln, daß sie einen Bund mit dir machen, und du über alles regierst, was deine Seele begehrt. Und David entließ Abner, und er ging hin in Frieden.

And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thy soul desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

Und siehe, die Knechte Davids und Joab kamen von einem Streifzuge und brachten große Beute mit sich. Abner war aber nicht mehr bei David zu Hebron; denn er hatte ihn entlassen, und er war hingegangen in Frieden.

And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from a foray, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

Als nun Joab und das ganze Heer, das mit ihm war, ankamen, da berichtete man Joab und sprach: Abner, der Sohn Ners, ist zum König gekommen; und er hat ihn entlassen, und er ist hingegangen in Frieden.

When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.

Da kam Joab zum König und sprach: Was hast du getan! Siehe, Abner ist zu dir gekommen; warum doch hast du ihn entlassen, daß er ungehindert weggegangen ist?

Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?

Du kennst Abner, den Sohn Ners, daß er gekommen ist, um dich zu bereden, und um deinen Ausgang und deinen Eingang zu wissen, und alles zu wissen, was du tust.

Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.

Und Joab ging von David hinaus und sandte Boten hinter Abner her; und sie holten ihn zurück von der Zisterne Sira; David aber wußte es nicht.

And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.

Als nun Abner nach Hebron zurückkam, führte ihn Joab beiseite in das Tor, um in der Stille mit ihm zu reden; und er schlug ihn daselbst in den Bauch, daß er starb - wegen des Blutes seines Bruders Asael.

And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there in the body, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

Und David hörte es hernach und sprach: Schuldlos bin ich und mein Königreich vor Jehova ewiglich an dem Blute Abners, des Sohnes Ners!

And afterward, when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before Jehovah for ever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner:

Es komme über das Haupt Joabs und über das ganze Haus seines Vaters; und nie soll im Hause Joabs fehlen der Flüssige und der Aussätzige und der sich am Stabe stützt und der durchs Schwert fällt und dem es an Brot mangelt! -

let it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all his father`s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth by the sword, or that lacketh bread.

So haben Joab und Abisai, sein Bruder, Abner ermordet, weil er ihren Bruder Asael zu Gibeon im Streit getötet hatte.

So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

Und David sprach zu Joab und zu allem Volke, das mit ihm war: Zerreißet eure Kleider und umgürtet euch mit Sacktuch, und klaget vor Abner her! Und der König David ging hinter der Bahre her.

And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David followed the bier.

Und sie begruben Abner zu Hebron; und der König erhob seine Stimme und weinte am Grabe Abners, und das ganze Volk weinte.

And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.

Und der König stimmte ein Klagelied an über Abner und sprach: Mußte, wie ein Tor stirbt, Abner sterben?

And the king lamented for Abner, and said, Should Abner die as a fool dieth?

Deine Hände waren nicht gebunden, und nicht in eherne Fesseln gelegt deine Füße. Wie man fällt vor Söhnen der Ungerechtigkeit, so bist du gefallen! Da weinte alles Volk noch mehr über ihn.

Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: As a man falleth before the children of iniquity, so didst thou fall. And all the people wept again over him.

Und alles Volk kam, um David zu bewegen, daß er Brot esse, während es noch Tag war. Aber David schwur und sprach: So soll mir Gott tun und so hinzufügen, wenn ich vor Untergang der Sonne Brot oder irgend etwas koste!

And all the people came to cause David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David sware, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or aught else, till the sun be down.

Und alles Volk nahm es wahr; und es war gut in ihren Augen, wie alles, was der König tat, gut war in den Augen des ganzen Volkes.

And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them; as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.

Und das ganze Volk und ganz Israel erkannten an jenem Tage, daß es nicht von dem König ausgegangen war, Abner, den Sohn Ners, zu töten.

So all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner.

Und der König sprach zu seinen Knechten: Wisset ihr nicht, daß an diesem Tage ein Oberster und Großer in Israel gefallen ist?

And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?

Ich aber bin heute schwach, obschon zum König gesalbt; und diese Männer, die Söhne der Zeruja, sind zu hart für mich. Jehova vergelte dem, der das Böse tut, nach seiner Bosheit!

And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me: Jehovah reward the evil-doer according to his wickedness.

Kapitel 4

Und als der Sohn Sauls hörte, daß Abner zu Hebron gestorben war, da wurden seine Hände schlaff, und ganz Israel war bestürzt.

And when [Ish-bosheth], Saul`s son, heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands became feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled.

Und zwei Männer waren Oberste der Scharen des Sohnes Sauls, der Name des einen war Baana, und der Name des anderen Rekab, Söhne Rimmons, des Beerothiters, von den Kindern Benjamin. Denn auch Beeroth wird zu Benjamin gerechnet;

And [Ish-bosheth], Saul`s son, [had] two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin (for Beeroth also is reckoned to Benjamin:

aber die Beerothiter entflohen nach Gittaim und haben sich dort als Fremdlinge aufgehalten bis auf diesen Tag.

and the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and have been sojourners there until this day).

Und Jonathan, der Sohn Sauls, hatte einen Sohn, der an den Füßen lahm war. Er war fünf Jahre alt, als die Nachricht von Saul und Jonathan aus Jisreel kam; da nahm seine Amme ihn auf und floh. Und es geschah, als sie ängstlich floh, daß er fiel und lahm wurde; und sein Name war Mephiboseth.

Now Jonathan, Saul`s son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel; and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

Und die Söhne Rimmons, des Beerothiters, Rekab und Baana, gingen hin und kamen um die Hitze des Tages in das Haus Isboseths, während er seine Mittagsruhe hielt.

And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ish-bosheth, as he took his rest at noon.

Und sie kamen dahin, bis in das Innere des Hauses, als wollten sie Weizen holen, und sie schlugen ihn in den Bauch. Und Rekab und sein Bruder Baana entrannen.

And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him in the body: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.

Sie kamen in das Haus, während er in seinem Schlafgemach auf seinem Bette lag, und sie schlugen ihn und töteten ihn und hieben ihm den Kopf ab; und sie nahmen seinen Kopf und gingen den Weg der Ebene die ganze Nacht hindurch.

Now when they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and went by the way of the Arabah all night.

Und sie brachten den Kopf Isboseths zu David nach Hebron und sprachen zu dem König: Siehe da, der Kopf Isboseths, des Sohnes Sauls, deines Feindes, der nach deinem Leben trachtete; und so hat Jehova meinem Herrn, dem König, an diesem Tage Rache verliehen an Saul und an seinem Samen.

And they brought the head of Ish-bosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold, the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, thine enemy, who sought thy life; and Jehovah hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.

Da antwortete David Rekab und Baana, seinem Bruder, den Söhnen Rimmons, des Beerothiters, und sprach zu ihnen: So wahr Jehova lebt, der meine Seele erlöst hat aus aller Bedrängnis,

And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As Jehovah liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

den, der mir berichtete und sprach: Siehe, Saul ist tot! und der in seinen Augen ein guter Bote war, den ergriff ich und tötete ihn zu Ziklag, um ihm so Botenlohn zu geben;

when one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his tidings.

wieviel mehr, da gottlose Männer einen gerechten Mann in seinem Hause auf seiner Lagerstätte ermordet haben, sollte ich jetzt nicht sein Blut von eurer Hand fordern und euch wegschaffen von der Erde?

How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed, shall I not now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?

Und David gebot seinen Knechten, und sie erschlugen sie und hieben ihnen die Hände und die Füße ab, und hängten sie auf am Teiche zu Hebron; das Haupt Isboseths aber nahmen sie und begruben es in dem Begräbnis Abners zu Hebron.

And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth, and buried it in the grave of Abner in Hebron.

Kapitel 5

Und alle Stämme Israels kamen zu David nach Hebron, und sie sprachen und sagten: Siehe, wir sind dein Gebein und dein Fleisch.

Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

Schon früher, als Saul König über uns war, bist du es gewesen, der Israel aus- und einführte; und Jehova hat zu dir gesagt: Du sollst mein Volk Israel weiden, und du sollst Fürst sein über Israel.

In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was thou that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and Jehovah said to thee, Thou shalt be shepherd of my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over Israel.

Und alle Ältesten Israels kamen zu dem König nach Hebron, und der König David machte einen Bund mit ihnen zu Hebron, vor Jehova; und sie salbten David zum König über Israel.

So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Jehovah: and they anointed David king over Israel.

Dreißig Jahre war David alt, als er König wurde; er regierte vierzig Jahre.

David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

Zu Hebron regierte er sieben Jahre und sechs Monate über Juda, und zu Jerusalem regierte er 33 Jahre über ganz Israel und Juda.

In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

Und der König zog mit seinen Männern nach Jerusalem wider die Jebusiter, die Bewohner des Landes. Und sie sprachen zu David und sagten: Du wirst nicht hier hereinkommen, sondern die Blinden und die Lahmen werden dich wegtreiben; sie wollten damit sagen: David wird nicht hier hereinkommen.

And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither; thinking, David cannot come in hither.

Aber David nahm die Burg Zion ein, das ist die Stadt Davids.

Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion; the same is the city of David.

Und David sprach an selbigem Tage: Wer die Jebusiter schlägt und an die Wasserleitung gelangt, und die Lahmen und die Blinden schlägt, welche der Seele Davids verhaßt sind ...! Daher spricht man: Ein Blinder und ein Lahmer darf nicht ins Haus kommen.

And David said on that day, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites, let him get up to the watercourse, and [smite] the lame and the blind, that are hated of David`s soul. Wherefore they say, There are the blind and the lame; he cannot come into the house.

Und David wohnte in der Burg, und er nannte sie Stadt Davids. Und David baute ringsum, von dem Millo an einwärts. -

And David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.

Und David wurde immerfort größer, und Jehova, der Gott der Heerscharen, war mit ihm.

And David waxed greater and greater; for Jehovah, the God of hosts, was with him.

Und Hiram, der König von Tyrus, sandte Boten zu David, und Zedernholz und Zimmerleute und Mauerleute; und sie bauten David ein Haus.

And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar-trees, and carpenters, and masons; and they built David a house.

Und David erkannte, daß Jehova ihn zum König über Israel bestätigt, und daß er sein Königreich erhoben hatte um seines Volkes Israel willen.

And David perceived that Jehovah had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel`s sake.

Und David nahm noch Kebsweiber und Weiber aus Jerusalem, nachdem er von Hebron gekommen war; und es wurden David noch Söhne und Töchter geboren.

And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron; and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.

Und dies sind die Namen der ihm in Jerusalem Geborenen: Schammua und Schobab und Nathan und Salomo,

And these are the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem: Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,

und Jibschar und Elischua und Nepheg und Japhija,

and Ibhar, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

und Elischama und Eljada und Eliphelet.

and Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphelet.

Und als die Philister hörten, daß man David zum König über Israel gesalbt hatte, da zogen alle Philister herauf, um David zu suchen. Und David hörte es und zog in die Burg hinab.

And when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the stronghold.

Und die Philister kamen und breiteten sich aus im Tale Rephaim.

Now the Philistines had come and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

Und David befragte Jehova und sprach: Soll ich wider die Philister hinaufziehen? Wirst du sie in meine Hand geben? Und Jehova sprach zu David: Ziehe hinauf, denn ich werde die Philister gewißlich in deine Hand geben.

And David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into my hand? And Jehovah said unto David, Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into thy hand.

Da kam David nach Baal-Perazim. Und David schlug sie daselbst, und er sprach: Jehova hat meine Feinde vor mir durchbrochen, gleich einem Wasserdurchbruch. Daher gab er jenem Orte den Namen Baal-Perazim.

And David came to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there; and he said, Jehovah hath broken mine enemies before me, like the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baal-perazim.

Und sie ließen daselbst ihre Götzen, und David und seine Männer nahmen sie weg.

And they left their images there; and David and his men took them away.

Und die Philister zogen wiederum herauf und breiteten sich aus im Tale Rephaim.

And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

Und David befragte Jehova; und er sprach: Du sollst nicht hinaufziehen; wende dich ihnen in den Rücken, daß du an sie kommst den Bakabäumen gegenüber.

And when David inquired of Jehovah, he said, Thou shalt not go up: make a circuit behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry-trees.

Und sobald du das Geräusch eines Daherschreitens in den Wipfeln der Bakabäume hörst, alsdann beeile dich; denn alsdann ist Jehova vor dir ausgezogen, um das Heer der Philister zu schlagen.

And it shall be, when thou hearest the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry-trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself; for then is Jehovah gone out before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.

Und David tat also, wie Jehova ihm geboten hatte; und er schlug die Philister von Geba, bis man nach Geser kommt.

And David did so, as Jehovah commanded him, and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gezer.

Kapitel 6

Und David versammelte wiederum alle Auserlesenen in Israel, 30000 Mann.

And David again gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.

Und David machte sich auf und zog hin, und alles Volk, das bei ihm war, nach Baale-Juda, um von dannen die Lade Gottes heraufzubringen, welche nach dem Namen, dem Namen Jehovas der Heerscharen, der zwischen den Cherubim thront, genannt wird.

And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him, from Baale-judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, which is called by the Name, even the name of Jehovah of hosts that sitteth [above] the cherubim.

Und sie stellten die Lade Gottes auf einen neuen Wagen, und brachten sie aus dem Hause Abinadabs weg, das auf dem Hügel war; und Ussa und Achjo, die Söhne Abinadabs, führten den neuen Wagen.

And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in the hill: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart.

Und sie brachten sie aus dem Hause Abinadabs weg, das auf dem Hügel war, indem sie die Lade Gottes begleiteten; und Achjo ging vor der Lade her.

And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was in the hill, with the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.

Und David und das ganze Haus Israel spielten vor Jehova mit allerlei Instrumenten von Zypressenholz, und mit Lauten und mit Harfen und mit Tamburinen und mit Sistren und mit Zimbeln.

And David and all the house of Israel played before Jehovah with all manner of [instruments made of] fir-wood, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with castanets, and with cymbals.

Und als sie zur Tenne Nakons kamen, da langte Ussa nach der Lade Gottes und faßte sie an, denn die Rinder hatten sich losgerissen.

And when they came to the threshing-floor of Nacon, Uzzah put forth [his hand] to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen stumbled.

Da entbrannte der Zorn Jehovas wider Ussa, und Gott schlug ihn daselbst wegen des Vergehens; und er starb daselbst bei der Lade Gottes.

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.

Und David entbrannte darüber, daß Jehova einen Bruch an Ussa gemacht hatte; und er nannte jenen Ort Perez-Ussa, bis auf diesen Tag.

And David was displeased, because Jehovah had broken forth upon Uzzah; and he called that place Perez-uzzah, unto this day.

Und David fürchtete sich vor Jehova an selbigem Tage und sprach: Wie soll die Lade Jehovas zu mir kommen?

And David was afraid of Jehovah that day; and he said, How shall the ark of Jehovah come unto me?

Und David wollte die Lade Jehovas nicht zu sich einkehren lassen in die Stadt Davids; und David ließ sie beiseite bringen in das Haus Obed-Edoms, des Gathiters.

So David would not remove the ark of Jehovah unto him into the city of David; but David carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

Und die Lade Jehovas blieb in dem Hause Obed-Edoms, des Gathiters, drei Monate. Und Jehova segnete Obed-Edom und sein ganzes Haus.

And the ark of Jehovah remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months: and Jehovah blessed Obed-edom, and all his house.

Und es wurde dem König David berichtet und gesagt: Jehova hat das Haus Obed-Edoms und alles, was sein ist, gesegnet um der Lade Gottes willen. Da ging David hin und holte die Lade Gottes aus dem Hause Obed-Edoms herauf in die Stadt Davids mit Freuden.

And it was told king David, saying, Jehovah hath blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. And David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with joy.

Und es geschah, wenn die Träger der Lade Jehovas sechs Schritte gegangen waren, so opferte er ein Rind und ein Mastvieh.

And it was so, that, when they that bare the ark of Jehovah had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.

Und David tanzte mit aller Kraft vor Jehova, und David war mit einem leinenen Ephod umgürtet.

And David danced before Jehovah with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

Und David und das ganze Haus Israel brachten die Lade Jehovas hinauf mit Jauchzen und mit Posaunenschall.

So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of Jehovah with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

Und es geschah, als die Lade Jehovas in die Stadt Davids kam, da schaute Michal, die Tochter Sauls, durchs Fenster; und sie sah den König David vor Jehova hüpfen und tanzen, und sie verachtete ihn in ihrem Herzen.

And it was so, as the ark of Jehovah came into the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before Jehovah; and she despised him in her heart.

Und sie brachten die Lade Jehovas hinein und stellten sie an ihren Ort innerhalb des Zeltes, das David für sie aufgeschlagen hatte. Und David opferte Brandopfer und Friedensopfer vor Jehova.

And they brought in the ark of Jehovah, and set it in its place, in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before Jehovah.

Und als David das Opfern der Brandopfer und der Friedensopfer beendigt hatte, segnete er das Volk im Namen Jehovas der Heerscharen.

And when David had made an end of offering the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings, he blessed the people in the name of Jehovah of hosts.

Und er verteilte an das ganze Volk, an die ganze Menge Israels, vom Manne bis zum Weibe, an einen jeden einen Brotkuchen und einen Trunk Wein und einen Rosinenkuchen. Und das ganze Volk ging hin, ein jeder nach seinem Hause.

And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, both to men and women, to every one a cake of bread, and a portion [of flesh], and a cake of raisins. So all the people departed every one to his house.

Und als David zurückkehrte, um sein Haus zu segnen, ging Michal, die Tochter Sauls, hinaus, David entgegen, und sprach: Wie hat der König von Israel sich heute verherrlicht, da er sich heute vor den Augen der Mägde seiner Knechte entblößt hat, wie sich nur einer der losen Leute entblößt!

Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to-day, who uncovered himself to-day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!

Da sprach David zu Michal: Vor Jehova, der mich vor deinem Vater und vor seinem ganzen Hause erwählt hat, um mich als Fürst zu bestellen über das Volk Jehovas, über Israel, ja, vor Jehova will ich spielen;

And David said unto Michal, [It was] before Jehovah, who chose me above thy father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of Jehovah, over Israel: therefore will I play before Jehovah.

und ich will noch geringer werden denn also, und will niedrig sein in meinen Augen; aber bei den Mägden, von denen du sprichst, bei ihnen werde ich geehrt sein.

And I will be yet more vile than this, and will be base in mine own sight: but of the handmaids of whom thou hast spoken, of them shall I be had in honor.

Michal aber die Tochter Sauls, hatte kein Kind bis zum Tage ihres Todes.

And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.

Kapitel 7

Und es geschah, als der König in seinem Hause wohnte, und Jehova ihm ringsumher Ruhe geschafft hatte vor allen seinen Feinden,

And it came to pass, when the king dwelt in his house, and Jehovah had given him rest from all his enemies round about,

da sprach der König zu Nathan, dem Propheten: Siehe doch, ich wohne in einem Hause von Zedern, und die Lade Gottes wohnt unter Teppichen.

that the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.

Und Nathan sprach zu dem König: Gehe hin, tue alles, was du im Herzen hast, denn Jehova ist mit dir.

And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thy heart; for Jehovah is with thee.

Und es geschah in selbiger Nacht, da geschah das Wort Jehovas zu Nathan also:

And it came to pass the same night, that the word of Jehovah came unto Nathan, saying,

Gehe hin und sprich zu meinem Knechte, zu David: So spricht Jehova: Solltest du mir ein Haus bauen zu meiner Wohnung?

Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah, Shalt thou build me a house for me to dwell in?

denn ich habe nicht in einem Hause gewohnt von dem Tage an, da ich die Kinder Israel aus Ägypten heraufgeführt habe, bis auf diesen Tag; sondern ich wanderte umher in einem Zelte und in einer Wohnung.

for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

Wo immer ich wanderte unter allen Kindern Israel, habe ich wohl zu einem der Stämme Israels, dem ich gebot, mein Volk Israel zu weiden, ein Wort geredet und gesagt: Warum habt ihr mir nicht ein Haus von Zedern gebaut?

In all places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel, spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar?

Und nun sollst du also zu meinem Knechte David sagen: So spricht Jehova der Heerscharen: Ich habe dich von der Trift genommen, hinter dem Kleinvieh weg, daß du Fürst sein solltest über mein Volk, über Israel;

Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people, over Israel;

und ich bin mit dir gewesen überall, wohin du gezogen bist, und habe alle deine Feinde vor dir ausgerottet; und ich habe dir einen großen Namen gemacht, gleich dem Namen der Großen, die auf Erden sind.

and I have been with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a great name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth.

Und ich werde einen Ort setzen für mein Volk, für Israel, und werde es pflanzen, daß es an seiner Stätte wohne und nicht mehr beunruhigt werde, und die Söhne der Ungerechtigkeit sollen es nicht mehr bedrücken, wie früher

And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first,

und seit dem Tage, da ich Richter über mein Volk Israel bestellt habe. Und ich habe dir Ruhe geschafft vor allen deinen Feinden; und Jehova tut dir kund, daß Jehova dir ein Haus machen wird.

and [as] from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will cause thee to rest from all thine enemies. Moreover Jehovah telleth thee that Jehovah will make thee a house.

Wenn deine Tage voll sein werden, und du bei deinen Vätern liegen wirst, so werde ich deinen Samen nach dir erwecken, der aus deinem Leibe kommen soll, und werde sein Königtum befestigen.

When thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, that shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

Der wird meinem Namen ein Haus bauen; und ich werde den Thron seines Königtums befestigen auf ewig.

He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

Ich will ihm Vater sein, und er soll mir Sohn sein, so daß, wenn er verkehrt handelt, ich ihn züchtigen werde mit einer Menschenrute und mit Schlägen der Menschenkinder;

I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;

aber meine Güte soll nicht von ihm weichen, wie ich sie von Saul weichen ließ, den ich vor dir weggetan habe.

but my lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.

Und dein Haus und dein Königtum sollen vor dir beständig sein auf ewig, dein Thron soll fest sein auf ewig.

And thy house and thy kingdom shall be made sure for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

Nach allen diesen Worten und nach diesem ganzen Gesicht, also redete Nathan zu David.

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

Da ging der König David hinein und setzte sich vor Jehova nieder und sprach: Wer bin ich, Herr, Jehova, und was ist mein Haus, daß du mich bis hierher gebracht hast?

Then David the king went in, and sat before Jehovah; and he said, Who am I, O Lord Jehovah, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far?

Und dies ist noch ein Geringes gewesen in deinen Augen, Herr, Jehova! und du hast auch von dem Hause deines Knechtes geredet in die Ferne hin; und ist dies die Weise des Menschen, Herr, Jehova?

And this was yet a small thing in thine eyes, O Lord Jehovah; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant`s house for a great while to come; and this [too] after the manner of men, O Lord Jehovah!

Doch was soll David noch weiter zu dir reden? Du kennst ja deinen Knecht, Herr, Jehova!

And what can David say more unto thee? for thou knowest thy servant, O Lord Jehovah.

Um deines Wortes willen und nach deinem Herzen hast du all dieses Große getan, um es deinem Knechte kundzutun.

For thy word`s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou wrought all this greatness, to make thy servant know it.

Darum bist du groß, Jehova Gott! denn niemand ist dir gleich, und kein Gott außer dir, nach allem, was wir mit unseren Ohren gehört haben.

Wherefore thou art great, O Jehovah God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

Und wer ist wie dein Volk, wie Israel, die einzige Nation auf Erden, welche Gott hingegangen ist, sich zum Volke zu erlösen, und um sich einen Namen zu machen, und für sie solch Großes zu tun und furchtbare Dinge für dein Land, indem du vor deinem Volke, das du dir aus Ägypten erlöst hast, Nationen und ihre Götter vertriebst!

And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem unto himself for a people, and to make him a name, and to do great things for you, and terrible things for thy land, before thy people, whom thou redeemest to thee out of Egypt, [from] the nations and their gods?

Und du hast dir dein Volk Israel befestigt, dir zum Volke auf ewig; und du, Jehova, bist ihr Gott geworden.

And thou didst establish to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever; and thou, Jehovah, becamest their God.

Und nun, Jehova Gott, das Wort, das du über deinen Knecht und über sein Haus geredet hast, halte aufrecht ewiglich, und tue, wie du geredet hast!

And now, O Jehovah God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, confirm thou it for ever, and do as thou hast spoken.

Und dein Name sei groß auf ewig, daß man spreche: Jehova der Heerscharen ist Gott über Israel. Und das Haus deines Knechtes David sei fest vor dir.

And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, Jehovah of hosts is God over Israel; and the house of thy servant David shall be established before thee.

Denn du, Jehova der Heerscharen, Gott Israels, hast dem Ohre deines Knechtes eröffnet und gesagt: Ich werde dir ein Haus bauen; darum hat dein Knecht sich ein Herz gefaßt, dieses Gebet zu dir zu beten.

For thou, O Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee a house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.

Und nun, Herr, Jehova, du bist es, der da Gott ist, und deine Worte sind Wahrheit, und du hast dieses Gute zu deinem Knechte geredet.

And now, O Lord Jehovah, thou art God, and thy words are truth, and thou hast promised this good thing unto thy servant:

So laß es dir nun gefallen und segne das Haus deines Knechtes, daß es ewiglich vor dir sei; denn du, Herr, Jehova, hast geredet, und so werde mit deinem Segen das Haus deines Knechtes gesegnet ewiglich!

now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee; for thou, O Lord Jehovah, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.

Kapitel 8

Und es geschah hernach, da schlug David die Philister und demütigte sie; und David nahm den Zaum der Hauptstadt aus der Hand der Philister.

And after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took the bridle of the mother city out of the hand of the Philistines.

Und er schlug die Moabiter und maß sie mit der Meßschnur, indem er sie auf die Erde legen ließ; und er maß zwei Meßschnüre ab, um zu töten, und eine volle Meßschnur, um am Leben zu lassen. Und die Moabiter wurden David zu Knechten, welche Geschenke brachten.

And he smote Moab, and measured them with the line, making them to lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death, and one full line to keep alive. And the Moabites became servants to David, and brought tribute.

Und David schlug Hadadeser, den Sohn Rechobs, den König von Zoba, als er hinzog, um seine Macht am Strome wiederherzustellen.

David smote also Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his dominion at the River.

Und David nahm von ihm 1700 Reiter und 20000 Mann Fußvolk gefangen; und David lähmte alle Gespanne und ließ 100 Gespanne von ihm übrig.

And David took from him a thousand and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David hocked all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for a hundred chariots.

Und die Syrer von Damaskus kamen, um Hadadeser, dem König von Zoba, zu helfen; und David erschlug unter den Syrern 22000 Mann.

And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succor Hadadezer king of Zobah, David smote of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.

Und David legte Besatzungen in das damascenische Syrien; und die Syrer wurden David zu Knechten, welche Geschenke brachten. Und Jehova half David überall, wohin er zog.

Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought tribute. And Jehovah gave victory to David whithersoever he went.

Und David nahm die goldenen Schilde, welche den Knechten Hadadesers gehörten, und brachte sie nach Jerusalem.

And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

Und aus Betach und aus Berothai, den Städten Hadadesers, nahm der König David Erz in großer Menge.

And from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took exceeding much brass.

Und als Toi, der König von Hamath, hörte, daß David die ganze Heeresmacht Hadadesers geschlagen hatte,

And when Toi king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadadezer,

da sandte Toi seinen Sohn Joram zu dem König David, um ihn nach seinem Wohlergehen zu fragen und ihn zu beglückwünschen, darum daß er wider Hadadeser gestritten und ihn geschlagen hatte; denn Hadadeser war stets im Kriege mit Toi; und in seiner Hand waren Geräte von Silber und Geräte von Gold und Geräte von Erz.

then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And [Joram] brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:

Auch diese heiligte der König David dem Jehova, samt dem Silber und dem Golde, das er von all den Nationen geheiligt, die er unterjocht hatte:

These also did king David dedicate unto Jehovah, with the silver and gold that he dedicated of all the nations which he subdued;

von den Syrern und von den Moabitern und von den Kindern Ammon und von den Philistern und von den Amalekitern, und von der Beute Hadadesers, des Sohnes Rechobs, des Königs von Zoba.

of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

Und David machte sich einen Namen, als er zurückkam, nachdem er die Syrer im Salztal geschlagen hatte, 18000 Mann.

And David gat him a name when he returned from smiting the Syrians in the Valley of Salt, even eighteen thousand men.

Und er legte Besatzungen in Edom, in ganz Edom legte er Besatzungen; und alle Edomiter wurden David zu Knechten. Und Jehova half David überall, wohin er zog.

And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all the Edomites became servants to David. And Jehovah gave victory to David whithersoever he went.

Und David regierte über ganz Israel; und David übte Recht und Gerechtigkeit an seinem ganzen Volke.

And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed justice and righteousness unto all his people.

Und Joab, der Sohn der Zeruja, war über das Heer; und Josaphat, der Sohn Ahiluds, war Geschichtsschreiber;

And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;

und Zadok, der Sohn Ahitubs, und Ahimelech, der Sohn Abjathars, waren Priester; und Seraja war Schreiber;

and Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were priests; and Seraiah was scribe;

und Benaja, der Sohn Jojadas, war über die Kerethiter und die Pelethiter; und die Söhne Davids waren Krondiener.

and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada [was over] the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David`s sons were chief ministers.

Kapitel 9

Und David sprach: Ist noch jemand da, der vom Hause Sauls übriggeblieben ist, daß ich Güte an ihm erweise um Jonathans willen?

And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan`s sake?

Es war aber ein Knecht vom Hause Sauls, sein Name war Ziba; und sie riefen ihn zu David. Und der König sprach zu ihm: Bist du Ziba? Und er sprach: Dein Knecht.

And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba, and they called him unto David; and the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he.

Und der König sprach: Ist niemand mehr da vom Hause Sauls, daß ich Güte Gottes an ihm erweise? Und Ziba sprach zu dem König: Es ist noch ein Sohn da von Jonathan, der an den Füßen lahm ist.

And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, who is lame of his feet.

Und der König sprach zu ihm: Wo ist er? Und Ziba sprach zu dem König: Siehe, er ist im Hause Makirs, des Sohnes Ammiels, zu Lodebar.

And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.

Da sandte der König David hin und ließ ihn aus dem Hause Makirs, des Sohnes Ammiels, holen, von Lodebar.

Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar.

Und Mephiboseth, der Sohn Jonathans, des Sohnes Sauls, kam zu David; und er fiel auf sein Angesicht und beugte sich nieder. Und David sprach: Mephiboseth! Und er sprach: Siehe, dein Knecht.

And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came unto David, and fell on his face, and did obeisance. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold, thy servant!

Und David sprach zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht; denn ich will gewißlich Güte an dir erweisen um deines Vaters Jonathan willen, und will dir alle Felder deines Vaters Saul zurückgeben; du aber sollst beständig an meinem Tische essen.

And David said unto him, Fear not; for I will surely show thee kindness for Jonathan thy father`s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.

Und er beugte sich nieder und sprach: Was ist dein Knecht, daß du dich zu einem toten Hunde gewandt hast, wie ich einer bin?

And he did obeisance, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?

Da rief der König Ziba, den Diener Sauls, und sprach zu ihm: Alles, was Saul und seinem ganzen Hause gehört hat, habe ich dem Sohne deines Herrn gegeben.

Then the king called to Ziba, Saul`s servant, and said unto him, All that pertained to Saul and to all his house have I given unto thy master`s son.

Und du sollst ihm das Land bauen, du und deine Söhne und deine Knechte, und den Ertrag einbringen, damit der Sohn deines Herrn Brot zu essen habe. Und Mephiboseth, der Sohn deines Herrn, soll beständig an meinem Tische essen. Und Ziba hatte fünfzehn Söhne und zwanzig Knechte.

And thou shalt till the land for him, thou, and thy sons, and thy servants; and thou shalt bring in [the fruits], that thy master`s son may have bread to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master`s son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

Und Ziba sprach zu dem König: Nach allem, was mein Herr, der König, seinem Knechte gebietet, also wird dein Knecht tun. Und Mephiboseth, sprach der König, wird an meinem Tische essen, wie einer von den Königssöhnen.

Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king commandeth his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, [said the king], he shall eat at my table, as one of the king`s sons.

Und Mephiboseth hatte einen kleinen Sohn, sein Name war Micha. Und alle, die im Hause Zibas wohnten, waren Mephiboseths Knechte.

And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth.

Und Mephiboseth wohnte in Jerusalem, denn er aß beständig am Tische des Königs. Er war aber lahm an beiden Füßen.

So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem; for he did eat continually at the king`s table. And he was lame in both his feet.

Kapitel 10

Und es geschah hernach, da starb der König der Kinder Ammon; und Hanun, sein Sohn, ward König an seiner Statt.

And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

Und David sprach: Ich will Güte erweisen an Hanun, dem Sohne Nahas', so wie sein Vater Güte an mir erwiesen hat. Und David sandte hin, um ihn durch seine Knechte wegen seines Vaters zu trösten. Und die Knechte Davids kamen in das Land der Kinder Ammon.

And David said, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness unto me. So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David`s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

Da sprachen die Fürsten der Kinder Ammon zu Hanun, ihrem Herrn: Ehrt wohl David deinen Vater in deinen Augen, daß er Tröster zu dir gesandt hat? Hat nicht David seine Knechte zu dir gesandt, um die Stadt zu erforschen und sie auszukundschaften und sie umzukehren?

But the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, in that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

Da nahm Hanun die Knechte Davids und ließ ihnen die Hälfte des Bartes abscheren und ihre Oberkleider zur Hälfte abschneiden, bis an ihre Gesäße; und er entließ sie.

So Hanun took David`s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

Und man berichtete es dem David. Da sandte er ihnen entgegen, denn die Männer schämten sich sehr; und der König ließ ihnen sagen: Bleibet in Jericho, bis euer Bart gewachsen ist, dann kommet zurück.

When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

Als nun die Kinder Ammon sahen, daß sie sich bei David stinkend gemacht hatten, da sandten die Kinder Ammon hin und dingten die Syrer von Beth-Rechob und die Syrer von Zoba, 20000 Mann zu Fuß, und den König von Maaka, 1000 Mann, und die Männer von Tob, 12000 Mann.

And when the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.

Und als David es hörte, sandte er Joab hin und das ganze Heer, die Helden.

And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

Und die Kinder Ammon zogen aus und stellten sich am Eingang des Tores in Schlachtordnung auf; und die Syrer von Zoba und Rechob und die Männer von Tob und Maaka waren für sich auf dem Felde.

And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

Und als Joab sah, daß der Streit von vorn und von hinten gegen ihn gerichtet war, da erwählte er von allen Auserlesenen Israels und stellte sich auf, den Syrern gegenüber;

Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:

und das übrige Volk übergab er der Hand seines Bruders Abisai, und dieser stellte sich auf, den Kindern Ammon gegenüber.

And the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.

Und er sprach: Wenn die Syrer mir zu stark sind, so sollst du mir Hilfe leisten; und wenn die Kinder Ammon dir zu stark sind, so will ich kommen, dir zu helfen.

And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.

Sei stark und laß uns stark sein für unser Volk und für die Städte unseres Gottes! und Jehova wird tun, was gut ist in seinen Augen.

Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him good.

Da rückte Joab und das Volk, das bei ihm war, vor zum Streit wider die Syrer; und sie flohen vor ihm.

So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.

Und als die Kinder Ammon sahen, daß die Syrer geflohen waren, da flohen auch sie vor Abisai und zogen sich in die Stadt zurück. Und Joab kehrte von den Kindern Ammon zurück und kam nach Jerusalem.

And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

Und als die Syrer sahen, daß sie vor Israel geschlagen waren, da versammelten sie sich allesamt.

And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

Und Hadareser sandte hin und ließ die Syrer ausziehen, die jenseit des Stromes waren; und sie kamen nach Helam, und Schobak, der Heeroberste Hadaresers, vor ihnen her.

And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer at their head.

Und es wurde David berichtet; da versammelte er ganz Israel und ging über den Jordan und kam nach Helam; und die Syrer stellten sich David gegenüber auf und stritten mit ihm.

And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

Und die Syrer flohen vor Israel, und David tötete von den Syrern 700 Wagenkämpfer und 40000 Reiter; und er erschlug Schobak, ihren Heerobersten, und er starb daselbst.

And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians [the men of] seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, so that he died there.

Und als alle die Könige, welche Knechte Hadaresers waren, sahen, daß sie vor Israel geschlagen waren, da machten sie Frieden mit Israel und dienten ihnen. Und die Syrer fürchteten sich, den Kindern Ammon fernerhin zu helfen.

And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

Kapitel 11

Und es geschah bei der Rückkehr des Jahres, zur Zeit, wann die Könige ausziehen, da sandte David Joab und seine Knechte mit ihm und ganz Israel; und sie richteten die Kinder Ammon zu Grunde und belagerten Rabba. David aber blieb in Jerusalem.

And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out [to battle], that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem.

Und es geschah zur Abendzeit, als David von seinem Lager aufstand und auf dem Dache des Hauses des Königs wandelte, daß er von dem Dache herab ein Weib sich baden sah; und das Weib war sehr schön von Ansehen.

And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king`s house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

Und David sandte hin und erkundigte sich nach dem Weibe; und man sprach: Ist das nicht Bathseba, die Tochter Eliams, das Weib Urijas, des Hethiters?

And David send and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

Und David sandte Boten hin und ließ sie holen; und sie kam zu ihm, und er lag bei ihr (sie hatte sich aber gereinigt von ihrer Unreinigkeit); und sie kehrte in ihr Haus zurück.

And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned unto her house.

Und das Weib wurde schwanger; und sie sandte hin und berichtete es David und sprach: Ich bin schwanger.

And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

Da entbot David dem Joab: Sende mir Urija, den Hethiter. Und Joab sandte Urija zu David.

And David sent to Joab, [saying], Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

Und Urija kam zu ihm; und David fragte nach dem Wohlergehen Joabs und nach dem Wohlergehen des Volkes und nach dem Stande des Streites.

And when Uriah was come unto him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.

Und David sprach zu Urija: Gehe in dein Haus hinab und wasche deine Füße. Und als Urija aus dem Hause des Königs ging, kam ein Geschenk des Königs hinter ihm her.

And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king`s house, and there followed him a mess [of food] from the king.

Und Urija legte sich am Eingang des Hauses des Königs nieder bei allen Knechten seines Herrn, und ging nicht in sein Haus hinab.

But Uriah slept at the door of the king`s house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.

Und man berichtete es David und sprach: Urija ist nicht in sein Haus hinabgegangen. Da sprach David zu Urija: Bist du nicht von der Reise gekommen? Warum bist du nicht in dein Haus hinabgegangen?

And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thy house?

Und Urija sprach zu David: Die Lade und Israel und Juda weilen in Hütten, und mein Herr Joab und die Knechte meines Herrn lagern auf freiem Felde, und ich sollte in mein Haus gehen, um zu essen und zu trinken und bei meinem Weibe zu liegen? So wahr du lebst und deine Seele lebt, wenn ich dieses tue!

And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

Da sprach David zu Urija: Bleibe auch heute noch hier, und morgen werde ich dich entlassen. So blieb Urija an jenem Tage und am folgenden in Jerusalem.

And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.

Und David lud ihn, und er aß und trank vor ihm, und er machte ihn trunken. Und am Abend ging er hinaus, um sich auf sein Lager niederzulegen bei den Knechten seines Herrn; aber in sein Haus ging er nicht hinab.

And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

Und es geschah am Morgen, da schrieb David einen Brief an Joab und sandte ihn durch Urija.

And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

Und er schrieb in dem Briefe also: Stellet Urija voran, wo der Streit am stärksten ist, und ziehet euch hinter ihm zurück, daß er erschlagen werde und sterbe.

And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.

Und es geschah, als Joab die Stadt einschloß, da stellte er Urija an den Ort, von dem er wußte, daß tapfere Männer daselbst waren.

And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men were.

Und die Männer der Stadt zogen heraus und stritten wider Joab, und es fielen etliche von dem Volke, von den Knechten Davids; und auch Urija, der Hethiter, starb.

And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

Da sandte Joab hin und berichtete David alle Begebenheiten des Streites.

Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

Und er befahl dem Boten und sprach: Wenn du geendigt hast, alle Begebenheiten des Streites dem König zu melden,

and he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling all the things concerning the war unto the king,

so geschehe es, wenn der Grimm des Königs aufsteigt, und er zu dir spricht: Warum habt ihr euch der Stadt genähert, um zu streiten? wußtet ihr nicht, daß sie von der Mauer herab schießen würden?

it shall be that, if the king`s wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore went ye so nigh unto the city to fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?

Wer hat Abimelech, den Sohn Jerubbeseths, erschlagen? Warf nicht ein Weib den oberen Stein einer Handmühle von der Mauer auf ihn herab, daß er starb zu Tebez? Warum habt ihr euch der Mauer genähert? - so sollst du sagen: Auch dein Knecht Urija, der Hethiter, ist tot.

who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast an upper millstone upon him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? why went ye so nigh the wall? then shalt thou say, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

Und der Bote ging hin; und er kam und berichtete David alles, wozu Joab ihn gesandt hatte.

So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.

Und der Bote sprach zu David: Da die Männer die Oberhand über uns hatten und gegen uns aufs Feld herauszogen, so drangen wir auf sie ein bis zum Eingang des Tores.

And the messenger said unto David, The men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entrance of the gate.

Da schossen die Schützen von der Mauer herab auf deine Knechte, und es starben etliche von den Knechten des Königs; und auch dein Knecht Urija, der Hethiter, ist tot.

And the shooters shot at thy servants from off the wall; and some of the king`s servants are dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

Da sprach David zu dem Boten: So sollst du zu Joab sagen: Laß diese Sache nicht übel sein in deinen Augen, denn das Schwert frißt bald so, bald so; verstärke deinen Streit gegen die Stadt und zerstöre sie! So ermutige ihn.

Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another; make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

Und als das Weib Urijas hörte, daß Urija, ihr Mann, tot war, klagte sie um ihren Gatten.

And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.

Als aber die Trauer vorüber war, sandte David hin und nahm sie in sein Haus; und sie wurde sein Weib und gebar ihm einen Sohn. Aber die Sache, die David getan hatte, war übel in den Augen Jehovas.

And when the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Jehovah.

Kapitel 12

Und Jehova sandte Nathan zu David; und er kam zu ihm und sprach zu ihm: Zwei Männer waren in einer Stadt, der eine reich, und der andere arm.

And Jehovah sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

Der Reiche hatte Kleinvieh und Rinder in großer Menge.

The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds;

Der Arme hatte aber gar nichts, als nur ein einziges kleines Lamm, das er gekauft hatte; und er nährte es, und es wurde groß bei ihm, und mit seinen Kindern zugleich; es aß von seinem Bissen und trank aus seinem Becher und schlief an seinem Busen, und es war ihm wie eine Tochter.

but the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own morsel, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

Da kam ein Reisender zu dem reichen Manne; und es dauerte ihn, von seinem Kleinvieh und von seinen Rindern zu nehmen, um es für den Wanderer zuzurichten, der zu ihm gekommen war, und er nahm das Lamm des armen Mannes und richtete es zu für den Mann, der zu ihm gekommen war.

And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him, but took the poor man`s lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

Da entbrannte der Zorn Davids sehr wider den Mann, und er sprach zu Nathan: So wahr Jehova lebt, der Mann, der dieses getan hat, ist ein Kind des Todes;

And David`s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As Jehovah liveth, the man that hath done this is worthy to die:

und das Lamm soll er vierfältig erstatten, darum daß er diese Sache getan, und weil er kein Mitleid gehabt hat!

and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

Da sprach Nathan zu David: Du bist der Mann! So spricht Jehova, der Gott Israels: Ich habe dich zum König über Israel gesalbt, und ich habe dich aus der Hand Sauls errettet,

And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

und ich habe dir das Haus deines Herrn gegeben und die Weiber deines Herrn in deinen Schoß, und habe dir das Haus Israel und Juda gegeben; und wenn es zu wenig war, so hätte ich dir noch dies und das hinzugefügt.

and I gave thee thy master`s house, and thy master`s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added unto thee such and such things.

Warum hast du das Wort Jehovas verachtet, indem du tatest, was übel ist in seinen Augen? Urija, den Hethiter, hast du mit dem Schwerte erschlagen, und sein Weib hast du dir zum Weibe genommen; ihn selbst hast du ja umgebracht durch das Schwert der Kinder Ammon.

Wherefore hast thou despised the word of Jehovah, to do that which is evil in his sight? thou hast smitten Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

Nun denn, so soll von deinem Hause das Schwert nicht weichen ewiglich, darum daß du mich verachtet und das Weib Urijas, des Hethiters, genommen hast, daß sie dir zum Weibe sei.

Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house, because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

So spricht Jehova: Siehe, ich will aus deinem Hause Unglück über dich erwecken, und ich will deine Weiber vor deinen Augen nehmen und sie deinem Nächsten geben, daß er bei deinen Weibern liege vor den Augen dieser Sonne!

Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house; and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

Denn du, du hast es im Verborgenen getan; ich aber, ich werde dieses tun vor ganz Israel und vor der Sonne!

For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

Da sprach David zu Nathan: Ich habe gegen Jehova gesündigt. Und Nathan sprach zu David: So hat auch Jehova deine Sünde hinweggetan, du wirst nicht sterben.

And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against Jehovah. And Nathan said unto David, Jehovah also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

Nur weil du den Feinden Jehovas durch diese Sache Anlaß zur Lästerung gegeben hast, so soll auch der Sohn, der dir geboren ist, gewißlich sterben.

Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of Jehovah to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

Und Nathan ging nach seinem Hause. Und Jehova schlug das Kind, welches das Weib Urijas dem David geboren hatte, und es wurde todkrank.

And Nathan departed unto his house. And Jehovah struck the child that Uriah`s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.

Und David suchte Gott um des Knaben willen; und David fastete und ging hinein und lag über Nacht auf der Erde.

David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.

Und die Ältesten seines Hauses machten sich zu ihm auf, um ihn von der Erde aufzurichten; aber er wollte nicht und aß kein Brot mit ihnen.

And the elders of his house arose, [and stood] beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

Und es geschah am siebten Tage, da starb das Kind. Und die Knechte Davids fürchteten sich, ihm zu berichten, daß das Kind tot sei; denn sie sprachen: Siehe, als das Kind noch am Leben war, haben wir zu ihm geredet, und er hat nicht auf unsere Stimme gehört; und wie sollen wir nun zu ihm sagen: Das Kind ist tot? Er würde etwas Übles tun.

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he hearkened not unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead!

Und David sah, daß seine Knechte sich zuflüsterten; da merkte David, daß das Kind tot war; und David sprach zu seinen Knechten: Ist das Kind tot? Und sie sprachen: Es ist tot.

But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.

Da stand David von der Erde auf und wusch und salbte sich und wechselte seine Kleider, und ging in das Haus Jehovas und betete an; und er kam in sein Haus und forderte, daß man ihm Speise vorsetze, und er aß.

Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel; and he came into the house of Jehovah, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.

Da sprachen seine Knechte zu ihm: Was ist das für ein Ding, das du tust? Als das Kind lebte, hast du um seinetwillen gefastet und geweint, und wie das Kind tot ist, stehst du auf und issest?

Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.

Und er sprach: Als das Kind noch lebte, habe ich gefastet und geweint, weil ich dachte: Wer weiß, ob Jehova mir nicht gnädig sein wird, daß das Kind am Leben bleibt?

And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who knoweth whether Jehovah will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?

Nun es aber tot ist, warum sollte ich denn fasten? Vermag ich es wieder zurückzubringen? Ich gehe zu ihm, aber es wird nicht zu mir zurückkehren.

But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.

Und David tröstete Bathseba, sein Weib, und ging zu ihr ein und lag bei ihr. Und sie gebar einen Sohn, und er gab ihm den Namen Salomo.

And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon. And Jehovah loved him;

Und Jehova liebte ihn. Und er sandte durch Nathan, den Propheten, und gab ihm den Namen Jedidjah, um Jehovas willen.

and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, for Jehovah`s sake.

Und Joab stritt wider Rabba der Kinder Ammon, und er nahm die Königsstadt ein.

Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

Und Joab sandte Boten zu David und ließ ihm sagen: Ich habe wider Rabba gestritten, habe auch die Wasserstadt eingenommen;

And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah; yea, I have taken the city of waters.

und nun versammle das übrige Volk und belagere die Stadt und nimm sie ein, daß nicht ich die Stadt einnehme, und sie nach meinem Namen genannt werde.

Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.

Da versammelte David alles Volk und zog nach Rabba, und er stritt wider dasselbe und nahm es ein.

And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.

Und er nahm die Krone ihres Königs von seinem Haupte; ihr Gewicht war ein Talent Gold, und Edelsteine waren daran; und sie kam auf das Haupt Davids. Und die Beute der Stadt brachte er hinaus in großer Menge.

And he took the crown of their king from off his head; and the weight thereof was a talent of gold, and [in it were] precious stones; and it was set on David`s head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city, exceeding much.

Und das Volk, das darin war, führte er hinaus und legte es unter die Säge und unter eiserne Dreschwagen und unter eiserne Beile, und ließ sie durch einen Ziegelofen gehen. Und also tat er allen Städten der Kinder Ammon. Und David und das ganze Volk kehrten nach Jerusalem zurück.

And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.

Kapitel 13

Und es geschah danach: Absalom, der Sohn Davids, hatte eine schöne Schwester, ihr Name war Tamar; und Amnon, der Sohn Davids, liebte sie.

And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

Und es war dem Amnon wehe zum Krankwerden um seiner Schwester Tamar willen; denn sie war eine Jungfrau, und es war in den Augen Amnons unmöglich, ihr das Geringste zu tun.

And Amnon was so vexed that he fell sick because of his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything unto her.

Und Amnon hatte einen Freund, sein Name war Jonadab, der Sohn Schimeas, des Bruders Davids; und Jonadab war ein sehr kluger Mann.

But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David`s brother; and Jonadab was a very subtle man.

Und er sprach zu ihm: Warum bist du so abgezehrt, Königssohn, Morgen für Morgen? Willst du es mir nicht kundtun? Und Amnon sprach zu ihm: Ich liebe Tamar, die Schwester meines Bruders Absalom.

And he said unto him, Why, O son of the king, art thou thus lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom`s sister.

Und Jonadab sprach zu ihm: Lege dich auf dein Lager und stelle dich krank; und kommt dein Vater, um dich zu sehen, so sprich zu ihm: Laß doch meine Schwester Tamar kommen und mir Speise zu essen geben, und vor meinen Augen das Essen zubereiten, damit ich zusehe und aus ihrer Hand esse.

And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and feign thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, Let my sister Tamar come, I pray thee, and give me bread to eat, and dress the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it from her hand.

Und Amnon legte sich und stellte sich krank. Und als der König kam, um ihn zu sehen, da sprach Amnon zu dem König: Laß doch meine Schwester Tamar kommen und vor meinen Augen zwei Kuchen bereiten, daß ich aus ihrer Hand esse.

So Amnon lay down, and feigned himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, Let her sister Tamar come, I pray thee, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.

Da sandte David zu Tamar ins Haus und ließ ihr sagen: Gehe doch in das Haus deines Bruders Amnon und bereite ihm das Essen.

Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon`s house, and dress him food.

Und Tamar ging in das Haus ihres Bruders Amnon; er lag aber zu Bette. Und sie nahm den Teig und knetete ihn, und bereitete Kuchen vor seinen Augen und backte die Kuchen.

So Tamar went to her brother Amnon`s house; and he was laid down. And she took dough, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.

Und sie nahm die Pfanne und schüttete sie vor ihm aus. Aber er weigerte sich zu essen. Und Amnon sprach: Laßt jedermann von mir hinausgehen! Und jedermann ging von ihm hinaus.

And she took the pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.

Da sprach Amnon zu Tamar: Bringe das Essen in das innere Gemach, daß ich von deiner Hand esse. Und Tamar nahm die Kuchen, die sie zubereitet hatte, und brachte sie ihrem Bruder Amnon in das innere Gemach.

And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from thy hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.

Und als sie ihm zu essen hinreichte, da ergriff er sie und sprach zu ihr: Komm, liege bei mir, meine Schwester!

And when she had brought them near unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come, lie with me, my sister.

Und sie sprach zu ihm: Nicht doch, mein Bruder! schwäche mich nicht, denn also tut man nicht in Israel; begehe nicht diese Schandtat!

And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.

Und ich, wohin sollte ich meinen Schimpf tragen? und du, du würdest sein wie einer der Schändlichen in Israel. Und nun rede doch zum König, denn er wird mich dir nicht verweigern.

And I, whither shall I carry my shame? and as for thee, thou wilt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.

Er wollte aber nicht auf ihre Stimme hören; und er überwältigte sie und schwächte sie und beschlief sie.

Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice; but being stronger than she, he forced her, and lay with her.

Und Amnon haßte sie mit einem sehr großen Hasse; denn der Haß, womit er sie haßte, war größer als die Liebe, womit er sie geliebt hatte. Und Amnon sprach zu ihr: Stehe auf, gehe!

Then Amnon hated her with exceeding great hatred; for the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.

Und sie sprach zu ihm: Es gibt keine Ursache zu diesem Übel, mich wegzutreiben, welches größer ist als das andere, das du mir angetan hast. Aber er wollte nicht auf sie hören.

And she said unto him, Not so, because this great wrong in putting me forth is [worse] than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her.

Und er rief seinem Knaben, seinem Diener, und sprach: Treibet doch diese hinaus, von mir weg, und verriegele die Tür hinter ihr!

Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.

Sie trug aber ein langes Gewand; denn also waren die Töchter des Königs, die Jungfrauen, mit Gewändern bekleidet. Und sein Diener führte sie hinaus und verriegelte die Tür hinter ihr.

And she had a garment of divers colors upon her; for with such robes were the king`s daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.

Da nahm Tamar Asche auf ihr Haupt und zerriß das lange Gewand, das sie anhatte, und sie legte ihre Hand auf ihr Haupt und ging und schrie im Gehen.

And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colors that was on her; and she laid her hand on her head, and went her way, crying aloud as she went.

Und ihr Bruder Absalom sprach zu ihr: Ist dein Bruder Amnon bei dir gewesen? Nun denn, meine Schwester, schweige still; er ist dein Bruder, nimm dir diese Sache nicht zu Herzen! Da blieb Tamar, und zwar einsam, im Hause ihres Bruders Absalom.

And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but now hold thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; take not this thing to heart. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom`s house.

Und der König David hörte alle diese Dinge, und er wurde sehr zornig.

But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth.

Und Absalom redete mit Amnon weder Böses noch Gutes; denn Absalom haßte Amnon, darum daß er seine Schwester Tamar geschwächt hatte.

And Absalom spake unto Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

Und es geschah nach zwei vollen Jahren, da hatte Absalom Schafscherer zu Baal-Hazor, das bei Ephraim liegt; und Absalom lud alle Söhne des Königs.

And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king`s sons.

Und Absalom kam zu dem König und sprach: Siehe doch, dein Knecht hat die Schafscherer; es gehe doch der König und seine Knechte mit deinem Knechte.

And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheep-shearers; let the king, I pray thee, and his servants go with thy servant.

Aber der König sprach zu Absalom: Nicht doch, mein Sohn! laß uns doch nicht allesamt gehen, daß wir dir nicht beschwerlich fallen. Und er drang in ihn; aber er wollte nicht gehen, und er segnete ihn.

And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him.

Da sprach Absalom: Wenn nicht, so laß doch meinen Bruder Amnon mit uns gehen! Und der König sprach zu ihm: Warum soll er mit dir gehen?

Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?

Absalom aber drang in ihn; da ließ er Amnon und alle Söhne des Königs mit ihm gehen.

But Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king`s sons go with him.

Und Absalom gebot seinen Knaben und sprach: Sehet doch zu, wenn Amnon fröhlichen Herzens wird vom Wein, und ich zu euch spreche: Erschlaget Amnon! so tötet ihn, fürchtet euch nicht! Bin ich es nicht, der es euch geboten hat? Seid stark und seid tapfer!

And Absalom commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now, when Amnon`s heart is merry with wine; and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon, then kill him; fear not; have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

Und die Knaben Absaloms taten dem Amnon, so wie Absalom geboten hatte. Da standen alle Söhne des Königs auf und bestiegen ein jeder sein Maultier und flohen.

And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king`s sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled.

Und es geschah, während sie auf dem Wege waren, da kam das Gerücht zu David, indem man sagte: Absalom hat alle Söhne des Königs erschlagen, und nicht einer von ihnen ist übriggeblieben.

And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that the tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king`s sons, and there is not one of them left.

Da stand der König auf und zerriß seine Kleider und legte sich auf die Erde; und alle seine Knechte standen da mit zerrissenen Kleidern.

Then the king arose, and rent his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.

Da hob Jonadab, der Sohn Schimeas, des Bruders Davids, an und sprach: Mein Herr sage nicht: sie haben alle die Jünglinge, die Söhne des Königs, getötet; denn Amnon allein ist tot; denn nach dem Beschluß Absaloms war es festgestellt von dem Tage an, da er seine Schwester Tamar geschwächt hat.

And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David`s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men the king`s sons; for Amnon only is dead; for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.

Und nun nehme mein Herr, der König, die Sache nicht zu Herzen, daß er spreche: alle Söhne des Königs sind tot; sondern Amnon allein ist tot.

Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king`s sons are dead; for Amnon only is dead.

Und Absalom entfloh. Und der Knabe, der Wächter, erhob seine Augen und sah: und siehe, viel Volks kam von dem Wege hinter ihm, von der Seite des Berges.

But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill-side behind him.

Da sprach Jonadab zu dem König: Siehe, die Söhne des Königs kommen; wie dein Knecht gesagt hat, also ist es geschehen.

And Jonadab said unto the king, Behold, the king`s sons are come: as thy servant said, so it is.

Und es geschah, sowie er ausgeredet hatte, siehe, da kamen die Söhne des Königs und erhoben ihre Stimme und weinten; und auch der König und alle seine Knechte brachen in ein sehr großes Weinen aus.

And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king`s sons came, and lifted up their voice, and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.

Absalom aber entfloh und ging zu Talmai, dem Sohne Ammihurs, dem König von Gesur. Und David trauerte um seinen Sohn alle Tage.

But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai the son of Ammihur, king of Geshur. And [David] mourned for his son every day.

Absalom aber entfloh und ging nach Gesur; und er war daselbst drei Jahre.

So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.

Und der König David sehnte sich, zu Absalom hinauszuziehen; denn er hatte sich über Amnon getröstet, daß er tot war.

And [the soul of] king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.

Kapitel 14

Und Joab, der Sohn der Zeruja, merkte, daß das Herz des Königs nach Absalom stand.

Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king`s heart was toward Absalom.

Da sandte Joab nach Tekoa und ließ von dannen ein kluges Weib holen; und er sprach zu ihr: Stelle dich doch trauernd und ziehe Trauerkleider an und salbe dich nicht mit Öl, und sei wie ein Weib, das schon viele Tage über einen Toten trauert;

And Joab sent to Tekoa, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on mourning apparel, I pray thee, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that hath a long time mourned for the dead:

und gehe zum König hinein und rede zu ihm nach diesem Worte. Und Joab legte ihr die Worte in den Mund.

and go in to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.

Und das tekoitische Weib sprach zu dem König; und sie fiel auf ihr Antlitz zur Erde und beugte sich nieder und sprach: Hilf, o König!

And when the woman of Tekoa spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.

Und der König sprach zu ihr: Was ist dir? Und sie sprach: Fürwahr, ich bin eine Witwe, und mein Mann ist gestorben.

And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, Of a truth I am a widow, and my husband is dead.

Und deine Magd hatte zwei Söhne, und sie zankten sich beide auf dem Felde, und niemand war da, der rettend dazwischentrat; und der eine schlug den anderen und tötete ihn.

And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and killed him.

Und siehe, das ganze Geschlecht ist wider deine Magd aufgestanden, und sie sprechen: Gib den heraus, der seinen Bruder erschlagen hat, daß wir ihn töten für die Seele seines Bruders, den er ermordet hat, und auch den Erben vertilgen! und so wollen sie meine Kohle auslöschen, die mir übriggeblieben ist, um meinem Manne weder Namen noch Überrest auf dem Erdboden zu lassen.

And, behold, the whole family is risen against thy handmaid, and they say, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he slew, and so destroy the heir also. Thus will they quench my coal which is left, and will leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the face of the earth.

Da sprach der König zu dem Weibe: Gehe nach deinem Hause, und ich werde deinethalben gebieten.

And the king said unto the woman, Go to thy house, and I will give charge concerning thee.

Und das tekoitische Weib sprach zu dem König: Auf mir, mein Herr König, und auf dem Hause meines Vaters sei die Ungerechtigkeit; der König aber und sein Thron seien schuldlos!

And the woman of Tekoa said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father`s house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.

Und der König sprach: Wer wider dich redet, den bringe zu mir, und er soll dich fortan nicht mehr antasten.

And the king said, Whosoever saith aught unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.

Und sie sprach: Der König gedenke doch Jehovas, deines Gottes, damit der Bluträcher nicht noch mehr Verderben anrichte, und sie meinen Sohn nicht vertilgen! Und er sprach: So wahr Jehova lebt, wenn von den Haaren deines Sohnes eines auf die Erde fällt!

Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember Jehovah thy God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As Jehovah liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.

Und das Weib sprach: Laß doch deine Magd ein Wort zu meinem Herrn, dem König, reden!

Then the woman said, Let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak a word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.

Und er sprach: Rede! Da sprach das Weib: Und warum hast du dergleichen wider Gottes Volk im Sinne? denn da der König dieses Wort geredet hat, ist er wie schuldig, indem der König seinen Verstoßenen nicht zurückholen läßt.

And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou devised such a thing against the people of God? for in speaking this word the king is as one that is guilty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished one.

Denn wir müssen gewißlich sterben und sind wie Wasser, das auf die Erde geschüttet ist, welches man nicht wieder sammeln kann; und Gott nimmt nicht das Leben weg, sondern er sinnt darauf, daß der Verstoßene nicht von ihm weg verstoßen bleibe.

For we must needs die, and are as water split on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God take away life, but deviseth means, that he that is banished be not an outcast from him.

Und nun, daß ich gekommen bin, um dieses Wort zu dem König, meinem Herrn, zu reden, ist, weil das Volk mich in Furcht gesetzt hat. Da dachte deine Magd: Ich will doch zu dem König reden, vielleicht wird der König das Wort seiner Magd tun;

Now therefore seeing that I am come to speak this word unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.

denn der König wird erhören, um seine Magd aus der Hand des Mannes zu erretten, der mich und meinen Sohn zusammen aus dem Erbteil Gottes vertilgen will.

For the king will hear, to deliver his servant out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.

Und deine Magd dachte: Das Wort meines Herrn, des Königs, möge doch zur Beruhigung sein; denn wie ein Engel Gottes, also ist mein Herr, der König, um das Gute und das Böse anzuhören; und Jehova, dein Gott, sei mit dir!

Then thy handmaid said, Let, I pray thee, the word of my lord the king be comfortable; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: and Jehovah thy God be with thee.

Da antwortete der König und sprach zu dem Weibe: Verhehle mir doch ja nichts, wonach ich dich fragen will! Und das Weib sprach: Es wolle doch mein Herr, der König, reden!

Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, aught that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.

Und der König sprach: Ist die Hand Joabs mit dir in diesem allem? Und das Weib antwortete und sprach: So wahr deine Seele lebt, mein Herr König, wenn zur Rechten oder zur Linken zu weichen ist von allem, was mein Herr, der König, redet! denn dein Knecht Joab, er hat es mir geboten, und er hat deiner Magd alle diese Worte in den Mund gelegt.

And the king said, Is the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from aught that my lord the king hath spoken; for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thy handmaid;

Um das Ansehen der Sache zu wenden, hat dein Knecht Joab dieses getan; aber mein Herr ist weise, gleich der Weisheit eines Engels Gottes, daß er alles weiß, was auf Erden vorgeht.

to change the face of the matter hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.

Und der König sprach zu Joab: Siehe doch, ich habe dieses getan; so gehe hin, hole den Jüngling, den Absalom, zurück.

And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom back.

Da fiel Joab auf sein Angesicht zur Erde und beugte sich nieder und segnete den König; und Joab sprach: Heute weiß dein Knecht, daß ich Gnade gefunden habe in deinen Augen, mein Herr König, da der König das Wort seines Knechtes getan hat.

And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and did obeisance, and blessed the king: and Joab said, To-day thy servant knoweth that I have found favor in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath performed the request of his servant.

Und Joab machte sich auf und ging nach Gesur, und er brachte Absalom nach Jerusalem.

So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

Aber der König sprach: Er soll sich nach seinem Hause wenden und mein Angesicht nicht sehen. Und Absalom wandte sich nach seinem Hause und sah das Angesicht des Königs nicht.

And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, but let him not see my face. So Absalom turned to his own house, and saw not the king`s face.

Und in ganz Israel war kein Mann wegen seiner Schönheit so sehr zu preisen wie Absalom; von seiner Fußsohle bis zu seinem Scheitel war kein Fehl an ihm.

Now in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

Und wenn er sein Haupt scheren ließ, - es geschah nämlich von Jahr zu Jahr, daß er es scheren ließ, denn es war ihm zu schwer, und so ließ er es scheren - so wog sein Haupthaar zweihundert Sekel, nach dem Gewicht des Königs.

And when he cut the hair of his head (now it was at every year`s end that he cut it; because it was heavy on him, therefore he cut it); he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, after the king`s weight.

Und dem Absalom wurden drei Söhne geboren und eine Tochter, ihr Name war Tamar; sie war ein Weib, schön von Ansehen.

And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.

Und Absalom wohnte zu Jerusalem zwei volle Jahre; und er sah das Angesicht des Königs nicht.

And Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem; and he saw not the king`s face.

Da sandte Absalom zu Joab, um ihn zu dem König zu senden; aber er wollte nicht zu ihm kommen. Und er sandte wiederum zum zweiten Mal, aber er wollte nicht kommen.

Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king; but he would not come to him: and he sent again a second time, but he would not come.

Da sprach er zu seinen Knechten: Sehet, das Ackerstück Joabs ist an meiner Seite, und er hat daselbst Gerste; gehet hin und zündet es mit Feuer an! Und die Knechte Absaloms zündeten das Ackerstück mit Feuer an.

Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab`s field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom`s servants set the field on fire.

Da machte Joab sich auf und kam zu Absalom ins Haus, und sprach zu ihm: Warum haben deine Knechte mein Ackerstück mit Feuer angezündet?

Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?

Und Absalom sprach zu Joab: Siehe, ich habe zu dir gesandt und dir sagen lassen: Komm her, daß ich dich zu dem König sende, um ihm zu sagen: Warum bin ich von Gesur gekommen? Besser wäre mir, ich wäre noch dort. Und nun möchte ich das Angesicht des Königs sehen; und wenn eine Ungerechtigkeit an mir ist, so töte er mich!

And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it were better for me to be there still. Now therefore let me see the king`s face; and if there be iniquity in me, let him kill me.

Da begab sich Joab zu dem König und berichtete es ihm. Und er rief Absalom; und er kam zu dem König und warf sich auf sein Antlitz zur Erde nieder vor dem König, und der König küßte Absalom.

So Joab came to the king, and told him; and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.

Kapitel 15

Und es geschah hernach, da schaffte sich Absalom Wagen und Rosse an, und fünfzig Mann, die vor ihm herliefen.

And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him.

Und Absalom machte sich früh auf und stellte sich an die Seite des Torweges; und es geschah: jedermann, der einen Rechtsstreit hatte, um zu dem König zu Gericht zu kommen, dem rief Absalom zu und sprach: Aus welcher Stadt bist du? Und sprach er: Dein Knecht ist aus einem der Stämme Israels,

And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that, when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.

so sprach Absalom zu ihm: Siehe, deine Sachen sind gut und recht; aber du hast von seiten des Königs niemand, der sie anhörte.

And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.

Und Absalom sprach: Wer mich doch zum Richter setzte im Lande, daß jedermann zu mir käme, der einen Rechtsstreit und Rechtshandel hat, und ich würde ihm zu seinem Recht verhelfen!

Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!

Und es geschah, wenn jemand ihm nahte, um sich vor ihm niederzubeugen, so streckte er seine Hand aus und ergriff ihn und küßte ihn.

And it was so, that, when any man came nigh to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him.

Und Absalom tat auf solche Weise allen Israeliten, die zu dem König zu Gericht kamen; und so stahl Absalom das Herz der Männer von Israel.

And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

Und es geschah am Ende von vierzig Jahren, da sprach Absalom zu dem König: Laß mich doch hingehen und zu Hebron mein Gelübde erfüllen, das ich Jehova gelobt habe;

And it came to pass at the end of forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto Jehovah, in Hebron.

denn als ich zu Gesur in Syrien wohnte, tat dein Knecht ein Gelübde und sprach: Wenn Jehova mich wirklich nach Jerusalem zurückbringt, so will ich Jehova dienen.

For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If Jehovah shall indeed bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve Jehovah.

Und der König sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin in Frieden! Und er machte sich auf und ging nach Hebron.

And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.

Und Absalom sandte Kundschafter in alle Stämme Israels und ließ sagen: Sobald ihr den Schall der Posaune höret, so sprechet: Absalom ist König geworden zu Hebron!

But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom is king in Hebron.

Und mit Absalom gingen zweihundert Mann aus Jerusalem; sie waren geladen worden und gingen in ihrer Einfalt; und sie wußten um nichts.

And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were invited, and went in their simplicity; and they knew not anything.

Und Absalom entbot Ahitophel, den Giloniter, den Rat Davids, aus seiner Stadt, aus Gilo, während er die Opfer schlachtete. Und die Verschwörung wurde stark, und das Volk mehrte sich fort und fort bei Absalom.

And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David`s counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.

Und es kam einer zu David, der ihm berichtete und sprach: Das Herz der Männer von Israel hat sich Absalom zugewandt.

And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.

Da sprach David zu allen seinen Knechten, die in Jerusalem bei ihm waren: Machet euch auf und laßt uns fliehen; denn sonst wird es kein Entrinnen für uns geben vor Absalom. Eilet, hinwegzugehen, daß er nicht eilends uns erreiche und das Unglück über uns treibe und die Stadt schlage mit der Schärfe des Schwertes!

And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for else none of us shall escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring down evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.

Und die Knechte des Königs sprachen zu dem König: Nach allem, was mein Herr, der König, zu tun erwählen wird, siehe hier, deine Knechte!

And the king`s servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall choose.

Und der König zog hinaus, und sein ganzes Haus in seinem Gefolge; und der König ließ zehn Kebsweiber zurück, um das Haus zu bewahren.

And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, that were concubines, to keep the house.

So zog der König hinaus, und alles Volk in seinem Gefolge, und sie machten Halt bei dem entfernten Hause.

And the king went forth, and all the people after him; and they tarried in Beth-merhak.

Und alle seine Knechte zogen an seiner Seite hinüber; und alle Kerethiter und alle Pelethiter, und alle Gathiter, sechshundert Mann, die in seinem Gefolge von Gath gekommen waren, zogen vor dem König hinüber.

And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men that came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

Da sprach der König zu Ittai, dem Gathiter: Warum willst auch du mit uns gehen? Kehre um und bleibe bei dem König; denn du bist ein Fremder, und sogar in deinen Ort eingewandert.

Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return, and abide with the king: for thou art a foreigner, and also an exile; [return] to thine own place.

Gestern bist du gekommen, und heute sollte ich dich mit uns umherirren lassen? Ich aber gehe, wohin ich gehe. Kehre um und führe deine Brüder zurück; Güte und Wahrheit seien mit dir!

Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us, seeing I go whither I may? return thou, and take back thy brethren; mercy and truth be with thee.

Aber Ittai antwortete dem König und sprach: So wahr Jehova lebt und mein Herr König lebt, an dem Orte, wo mein Herr, der König, sein wird, sei es zum Tode, sei es zum Leben, daselbst wird auch dein Knecht sein!

And Ittai answered the king, and said, As Jehovah liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether for death or for life, even there also will thy servant be.

Da sprach David zu Ittai: Komm und ziehe hinüber! Und Ittai, der Gathiter, zog hinüber mit allen seinen Männern und allen Kindern, die bei ihm waren.

And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.

Und das ganze Land weinte mit lauter Stimme, und alles Volk ging hinüber. Und der König ging über den Bach Kidron; und alles Volk zog hinüber nach dem Wege zur Wüste hin.

And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.

Und siehe, auch Zadok war da und alle Leviten mit ihm, die Lade des Bundes Gottes tragend; und sie stellten die Lade Gottes hin, und Abjathar ging hinauf, bis alles Volk aus der Stadt vollends hinübergegangen war.

And, lo, Zadok also [came], and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.

Und der König sprach zu Zadok: Bringe die Lade Gottes in die Stadt zurück. Wenn ich Gnade finde in den Augen Jehovas, so wird er mich zurückbringen, und mich sie und seine Wohnung sehen lassen.

And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favor in the eyes of Jehovah, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation:

Wenn er aber also spricht: Ich habe kein Gefallen an dir - hier bin ich, mag er mit mir tun, wie es gut ist in seinen Augen.

but if he say thus, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.

Und der König sprach zu Zadok, dem Priester: Bist du nicht der Seher? Kehre in die Stadt zurück in Frieden, und Achimaaz, dein Sohn, und Jonathan, der Sohn Abjathars, eure beiden Söhne, mit euch.

The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art thou [not] a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.

Sehet, ich will in den Ebenen der Wüste verziehen, bis ein Wort von euch kommt, mir Kunde zu geben.

See, I will tarry at the fords of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.

Und Zadok und Abjathar brachten die Lade Gottes nach Jerusalem zurück, und sie blieben daselbst.

Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they abode there.

David aber ging die Anhöhe der Olivenbäume hinauf und weinte, während er hinaufging; und sein Haupt war verhüllt, und er ging barfuß; und alles Volk, das bei ihm war, hatte ein jeder sein Haupt verhüllt und ging unter Weinen hinauf.

And David went up by the ascent of the [mount of] Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered, and went barefoot: and all the people that were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

Und man berichtete David und sprach: Ahitophel ist unter den Verschworenen mit Absalom. Da sprach David: Betöre doch den Rat Ahitophels, Jehova!

And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Jehovah, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

Und es geschah, als David auf den Gipfel gekommen war, wo er Gott anzubeten pflegte, siehe, da kam ihm Husai, der Arkiter, entgegen mit zerrissenem Leibrock und Erde auf seinem Haupte.

And it came to pass, that, when David was come to the top [of the ascent], where God was worshipped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head.

Und David sprach zu ihm: Wenn du mit mir weiter gehst, so wirst du mir zur Last sein.

And David said unto him, If thou passest on with me, then thou wilt be a burden unto me:

Wenn du aber in die Stadt zurückkehrst und zu Absalom sagst: Dein Knecht, o König, will ich sein; wie ich von jeher der Knecht deines Vaters gewesen bin, so will ich jetzt dein Knecht sein: so wirst du mir den Rat Ahitophels zunichte machen.

but if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father`s servant in time past, so will I now be thy servant; then wilt thou defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.

Und sind nicht Zadok und Abjathar, die Priester, dort bei dir? Und es soll geschehen, jede Sache, die du aus dem Hause des Königs hören wirst, sollst du Zadok und Abjathar, den Priestern, kundtun.

And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king`s house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.

Siehe, ihre beiden Söhne sind daselbst bei ihnen, Achimaaz, des Zadok, und Jonathan, des Abjathar Sohn; so entbietet mir durch sie jede Sache, die ihr hören werdet.

Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok`s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar`s son; and by them ye shall send unto me everything that ye shall hear.

Da begab sich Husai, der Freund Davids, in die Stadt; Absalom aber zog in Jerusalem ein.

So Hushai, David`s friend, came into the city; and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

Kapitel 16

Und als David von dem Gipfel ein wenig weiter gegangen war, siehe, da kam Ziba, der Knabe Mephiboseths, ihm entgegen mit einem Paar gesattelter Esel, und auf ihnen zweihundert Brote und hundert Rosinenkuchen und hundert Kuchen von getrocknetem Obst und ein Schlauch Wein.

And when David was a little past the top [of the ascent], behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and a hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine.

Und der König sprach zu Ziba: Was willst du damit? Und Ziba sprach: Die Esel sind für das Haus des Königs, um darauf zu reiten, und das Brot und das getrocknete Obst zum Essen für die Knaben, und der Wein zum Trinken für den, der in der Wüste ermattet.

And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses are for the king`s household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink.

Und der König sprach: Und wo ist der Sohn deines Herrn? Und Ziba sprach zu dem König: Siehe, er bleibt in Jerusalem; denn er sprach: Heute wird mir das Haus Israel das Königtum meines Vaters wiedergeben!

And the king said, And where is thy master`s son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem; for he said, To-day will the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.

Da sprach der König zu Ziba: Siehe, dein ist alles, was Mephiboseth gehört. Und Ziba sprach: Ich beuge mich nieder; möge ich Gnade finden in deinen Augen, mein Herr König!

Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine is all that pertaineth unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I do obeisance; let me find favor in thy sight, my lord, O king.

Und als der König David nach Bachurim kam, siehe, da kam von dannen heraus ein Mann vom Geschlecht des Hauses Sauls, sein Name war Simei, der Sohn Geras. Er kam unter Fluchen heraus,

And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came out, and cursed still as he came.

und warf mit Steinen nach David und nach allen Knechten des Königs David; und alles Volk und alle Helden waren zu seiner Rechten und zu seiner Linken.

And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

Und Simei sprach also, indem er fluchte: Hinweg, hinweg, du Mann des Blutes und Mann Belials!

And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and base fellow:

Jehova hat alles Blut des Hauses Sauls, an dessen Statt du König geworden bist, auf dich zurückgebracht, und Jehova hat das Königtum in die Hand deines Sohnes Absalom gegeben; und siehe, nun bist du in deinem Unglück, denn ein Mann des Blutes bist du!

Jehovah hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and Jehovah hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son; and, behold, thou art [taken] in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.

Und Abisai, der Sohn der Zeruja, sprach zu dem König: Warum soll dieser tote Hund meinem Herrn, dem König, fluchen? Laß mich doch hinübergehen und ihm den Kopf wegnehmen!

Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.

Aber der König sprach: Was haben wir miteinander zu schaffen, ihr Söhne der Zeruja? Ja, mag er fluchen! denn wenn Jehova ihm gesagt hat: Fluche David! wer darf dann sagen: Warum tust du also?

And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? Because he curseth, and because Jehovah hath said unto him, Curse David; who then shall say, Wherefore hast thou done so?

Und David sprach zu Abisai und zu allen seinen Knechten: Siehe, mein Sohn, der aus meinem Leibe hervorgegangen ist, trachtet mir nach dem Leben; wieviel mehr nun dieser Benjaminiter! Laßt ihn, daß er fluche; denn Jehova hat es ihn geheißen.

And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, who came forth from my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more [may] this Benjamite now [do it]? let him alone, and let him curse; for Jehovah hath bidden him.

Vielleicht wird Jehova mein Elend ansehen, und Jehova mir Gutes erstatten dafür, daß mir geflucht wird an diesem Tage.

It may be that Jehovah will look on the wrong done unto me, and that Jehovah will requite me good for [his] cursing of me this day.

Und David und seine Männer zogen auf dem Wege; Simei aber ging an der Seite des Berges, ihm gegenüber, immerfort fluchend, und warf mit Steinen gegen ihn und warf Staub empor.

So David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill-side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.

Und der König und alles Volk, das bei ihm war, kamen ermattet an; und er erholte sich daselbst.

And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary; and he refreshed himself there.

Absalom aber und alles Volk, die Männer von Israel, kamen nach Jerusalem, und Ahitophel mit ihm.

And Absalom, and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him.

Und es geschah, als Husai, der Arkiter, der Freund Davids, zu Absalom kam, da sprach Husai zu Absalom: Es lebe der König! es lebe der König!

And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David`s friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom, [Long] live the king, [Long] live the king.

Und Absalom sprach zu Husai: Ist das deine Güte an deinem Freunde? Warum bist du nicht mit deinem Freunde gegangen?

And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?

Und Husai sprach zu Absalom: Nein, sondern wen Jehova erwählt hat und dieses Volk und alle Männer von Israel, dessen will ich sein, und bei ihm will ich bleiben;

And Hushai said unto Absalom, Nay; but whom Jehovah, and this people, and all the men of Israel have chosen, his will I be, and with him will I abide.

und zum anderen, wem sollte ich dienen? nicht vor seinem Sohne? Wie ich vor deinem Vater gedient habe, also will ich vor dir sein.

And again, whom should I serve? [should I] not [serve] in the presence of his son? as I have served in thy father`s presence, so will I be in thy presence.

Und Absalom sprach zu Ahitophel: Schaffet Rat, was wir tun sollen!

Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give your counsel what we shall do.

Und Ahitophel sprach zu Absalom: Gehe ein zu den Kebsweibern deines Vaters, die er zurückgelassen hat, um das Haus zu bewahren; so wird ganz Israel hören, daß du dich bei deinem Vater stinkend gemacht hast, und die Hände aller derer, die mit dir sind, werden erstarken.

And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father`s concubines, that he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then will the hands of all that are with thee be strong.

Da schlug man für Absalom ein Zelt auf dem Dache auf; und Absalom ging ein zu den Kebsweibern seines Vaters vor den Augen von ganz Israel.

So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in unto his father`s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

Der Rat Ahitophels aber, den er in jenen Tagen riet, war, wie wenn man das Wort Gottes befragte; also war jeder Rat Ahitophels, sowohl für David als auch für Absalom.

And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

Kapitel 17

Und Ahitophel sprach zu Absalom: Laß mich doch zwölftausend Mann auslesen, und mich aufmachen und diese Nacht David nachjagen;

Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:

und ich werde über ihn kommen, während er müde und an Händen schlaff ist, und ihn in Schrecken setzen; und alles Volk, das bei ihm ist, wird fliehen, und ich werde den König allein schlagen;

and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only;

und so werde ich alles Volk zu dir zurückbringen. Gleich der Rückkehr aller ist der Mann, den du suchst: das ganze Volk wird in Frieden sein.

and I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: [so] all the people shall be in peace.

Und das Wort war recht in den Augen Absaloms und in den Augen aller Ältesten von Israel.

And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

Und Absalom sprach: Rufe doch auch Husai, den Arkiter, daß wir hören, was auch er sagt.

Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.

Und Husai kam zu Absalom; und Absalom sprach zu ihm und sagte: Nach diesem Worte hat Ahitophel geredet; sollen wir sein Wort ausführen? Wenn nicht, so rede du!

And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do [after] his saying? if not, speak thou.

Da sprach Husai zu Absalom: Nicht gut ist der Rat, den Ahitophel diesmal gegeben hat.

And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given this time is not good.

Und Husai sprach: Du kennst ja deinen Vater und seine Männer, daß sie Helden, und daß sie erbitterten Gemütes sind, wie eine der Jungen beraubte Bärin auf dem Felde; und dein Vater ist ein Kriegsmann: er wird nicht bei dem Volke übernachten.

Hushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

Siehe, er hat sich jetzt in irgend einer Schlucht oder sonst an einem Orte versteckt. Und es wird geschehen, wenn zu Anfang etliche unter ihnen fallen, so wird jeder, der es hört, sagen: Es hat eine Niederlage unter dem Volke stattgefunden, das Absalom nachfolgt!

Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some [other] place: and it will come to pass, when some of them are fallen at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.

und ist er auch ein tapferer Mann, dessen Herz wie ein Löwenherz ist, so wird er sicher verzagen; denn ganz Israel weiß, daß dein Vater ein Held ist, und die bei ihm sind tapfere Männer.

And even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they that are with him are valiant men.

Sondern ich rate: Es werde ganz Israel insgesamt zu dir versammelt, von Dan bis Beerseba, wie der Sand, der am Meere ist, an Menge; und deine Person ziehe mit ins Treffen.

But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

Und wir werden über ihn kommen an einem der Orte, wo er sich befindet, und uns auf ihn niederlassen, wie der Tau auf den Erdboden fällt; und es wird von ihm und von all den Männern, die bei ihm sind, auch nicht einer übrigbleiben.

So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one.

Und wenn er sich in eine Stadt zurückzieht, so soll ganz Israel Seile an jene Stadt legen, und wir schleppen sie an den Fluß, bis dort auch nicht ein Steinchen mehr gefunden wird.

Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.

Und Absalom und alle Männer von Israel sprachen: Der Rat Husais, des Arkiters, ist besser als der Rat Ahitophels. Aber Jehova hatte es so angeordnet, um den guten Rat Ahitophels zunichte zu machen, damit Jehova das Unglück über Absalom brächte.

And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For Jehovah had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that Jehovah might bring evil upon Absalom.

Und Husai sprach zu Zadok und zu Abjathar, den Priestern: So und so hat Ahitophel dem Absalom und den Ältesten von Israel geraten, und so und so habe ich geraten.

Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.

So sendet nun eilends hin und berichtet David und sprechet: Übernachte nicht diese Nacht in den Ebenen der Wüste, sondern gehe jedenfalls hinüber, damit nicht der König und alles Volk, das bei ihm ist, verschlungen werde.

Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.

Jonathan aber, und Achimaaz standen bei En-Rogel (eine Magd ging nämlich hin und berichtete ihnen, und sie gingen hin und berichteten dem König David; denn sie durften sich nicht sehen lassen, indem sie in die Stadt kamen).

Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying by En-rogel; and a maid-servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David: for they might not be seen to come into the city.

Und ein Knabe sah sie und berichtete es Absalom. Da gingen sie beide eilends und kamen in das Haus eines Mannes zu Bachurim; der hatte einen Brunnen in seinem Hofe, und sie stiegen dort hinab.

But a lad saw them, and told Absalom: and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither.

Und das Weib nahm eine Decke und breitete sie über den Brunnen, und streute Grütze darüber aus, so daß nichts bemerkt wurde.

And the woman took and spread the covering over the well`s mouth, and strewed bruised grain thereon; and nothing was known.

Und die Knechte Absaloms kamen zu dem Weibe ins Haus und sprachen: Wo sind Achimaaz und Jonathan? Und das Weib sprach zu ihnen: Sie sind über das Wasserbächlein gegangen. Und sie suchten, aber sie fanden sie nicht, und kehrten nach Jerusalem zurück.

And Absalom`s servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They are gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

Und es geschah, nachdem sie weggegangen waren, da stiegen sie aus dem Brunnen herauf und gingen hin und berichteten dem König David; und sie sprachen zu David: Machet euch auf und gehet eilends über das Wasser, denn so hat Ahitophel wider euch geraten.

And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David, Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water; for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.

Da machte David sich auf, und alles Volk, das bei ihm war, und sie gingen über den Jordan; bis der Morgen hell wurde, ward auch nicht einer vermißt, der nicht über den Jordan gegangen wäre.

Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over the Jordan.

Als aber Ahitophel sah, daß sein Rat nicht ausgeführt worden war, sattelte er den Esel und machte sich auf und zog nach seinem Hause, nach seiner Stadt; und er bestellte sein Haus und erdrosselte sich; und er starb und wurde begraben im Begräbnis seines Vaters.

And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

Und David kam nach Machanaim; und Absalom ging über den Jordan, er und alle Männer von Israel mit ihm.

Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

Und Absalom setzte Amasa an Joabs Statt über das Heer. Amasa war aber der Sohn eines Mannes, dessen Name Jithra war, der Israelit, der zu Abigail eingegangen war, der Tochter des Nahas, der Schwester der Zeruja, der Mutter Joabs.

And Absalom set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Israelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab`s mother.

Und Israel und Absalom lagerten sich im Lande Gilead.

And Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.

Und es geschah, als David nach Machanaim kam, da brachten Schobi, der Sohn des Nahas, aus Rabba der Kinder Ammon, und Makir, der Sohn Ammiels, aus Lodebar, und Barsillai, der Gileaditer, aus Rogelim,

And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,

Betten und Becken und Töpfergefäße, und Weizen und Gerste und Mehl, und geröstete Körner und Bohnen und Linsen und Geröstetes davon,

brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched [grain], and beans, and lentils, and parched [pulse],

und Honig und geronnene Milch, und Kleinvieh und Kuhkäse zu David und zu dem Volke, das bei ihm war, daß sie äßen; denn sie sprachen: Das Volk ist hungrig und matt und durstig in der Wüste.

and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of the herd, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

Kapitel 18

Und David musterte das Volk, das bei ihm war, und setzte über sie Oberste über tausend und Oberste über hundert.

And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

Und David entsandte das Volk: ein Drittel unter der Hand Joabs und ein Drittel unter der Hand Abisais, des Sohnes der Zeruja, des Bruder Joabs, und ein Drittel unter der Hand Ittais, des Gathiters. Und der König sprach zu dem Volke: Auch ich werde gewißlich mit euch ausziehen.

And David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab`s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

Aber das Volk sprach: Du sollst nicht ausziehen; denn wenn wir fliehen müßten, so würden sie nicht auf uns den Sinn richten; und wenn die Hälfte von uns stürbe, so würden sie nicht auf uns den Sinn richten; denn du bist wie unser zehntausend. So ist es nun besser, daß du uns von der Stadt aus zum Beistande bist.

But the people said, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but thou art worth ten thousand of us; therefore now it is better that thou be ready to succor us out of the city.

Und der König sprach zu ihnen: Was gut ist in euren Augen, will ich tun. Und der König stellte sich an die Seite des Tores, und alles Volk zog aus zu Hunderten und zu Tausenden.

And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate-side, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.

Und der König gebot Joab und Abisai und Ittai und sprach: Verfahret mir gelinde mit dem Jüngling, mit Absalom! Und alles Volk hörte es, als der König allen Obersten wegen Absaloms gebot.

And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.

Und das Volk zog aus ins Feld, Israel entgegen; und die Schlacht fand statt im Walde Ephraim.

So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.

Und das Volk von Israel wurde daselbst vor den Knechten Davids geschlagen, und die Niederlage wurde daselbst groß an jenem Tage: 20000 Mann.

And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.

Und die Schlacht breitete sich daselbst aus über das ganze Land; und der Wald fraß mehr unter dem Volke, als das Schwert an jenem Tage fraß.

For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

Und Absalom stieß auf die Knechte Davids; und Absalom ritt auf einem Maultier, und das Maultier kam unter die verschlungenen Zweige einer großen Terebinthe; und er blieb mit dem Haupte an der Terebinthe hangen, und schwebte zwischen Himmel und Erde; das Maultier aber, das unter ihm war, lief davon.

And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. And Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between heaven and earth; and the mule that was under him went on.

Und ein Mann sah es und berichtete es Joab und sprach: Siehe, ich habe Absalom an einer Terebinthe hangen sehen.

And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.

Da sprach Joab zu dem Manne, der es ihm berichtete: Siehe, wenn du ihn gesehen hast, warum hast du ihn nicht daselbst zu Boden geschlagen? und an mir war es, dir zehn Sekel Silber und einen Gürtel zu geben.

And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest it, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten [pieces of] silver, and a girdle.

Aber der Mann sprach zu Joab: Und wenn ich tausend Sekel Silber auf meinen Händen wöge, würde ich meine Hand nicht nach des Königs Sohn ausstrecken; denn vor unseren Ohren hat der König dir und Abisai und Ittai geboten und gesagt: Seid vorsichtig, wer es auch sei, mit dem Jüngling mit Absalom!

And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand [pieces of] silver in my hand, yet would I not put forth my hand against the king`s son; for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.

Hätte ich aber trüglich gegen sein Leben gehandelt, - und es bleibt ja keine Sache vor dem König verborgen - so würdest du selbst wider mich auftreten.

Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against his life (and there is no matter hid from the king), then thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against [me].

Da sprach Joab: Ich mag nicht also vor dir warten. Und er nahm drei Spieße in seine Hand und stieß sie in das Herz Absaloms, während er noch inmitten der Terebinthe lebte.

Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

Und zehn Knaben, Waffenträger Joabs, umgaben und erschlugen Absalom und töteten ihn.

And ten young men that bare Joab`s armor compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.

Und Joab stieß in die Posaune, und das Volk kehrte um von der Verfolgung Israels; denn Joab hielt das Volk ab.

And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held back the people.

Und sie nahmen Absalom und warfen ihn in eine große Grube im Walde, und errichteten über ihm einen sehr großen Haufen Steine. Und ganz Israel floh, ein jeder nach seinem Zelte.

And they took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.

Absalom aber hatte bei seinen Lebzeiten eine Denksäule genommen und sich aufgerichtet, die im Königstale steht; denn er sprach: Ich habe keinen Sohn, um meinen Namen in Erinnerung zu halten. Und er hatte die Denksäule nach seinem Namen genannt; und man nennt sie das Denkmal Absaloms, bis auf diesen Tag.

Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king`s dale; for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name; and it is called Absalom`s monument, unto this day.

Und Achimaaz, der Sohn Zadoks, sprach: Ich will doch hinlaufen und dem König Botschaft bringen, daß Jehova ihm Recht verschafft hat von der Hand seiner Feinde.

Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that Jehovah hath avenged him of his enemies.

Aber Joab sprach zu ihm: Du sollst nicht Bote sein an diesem Tage, sondern du magst an einem anderen Tage Botschaft bringen; doch an diesem Tage sollst du nicht Botschaft bringen, da ja der Sohn des Königs tot ist.

And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not be the bearer of tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day; but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king`s son is dead.

Und Joab sprach zu dem Kuschiten: Gehe hin, berichte dem König, was du gesehen hast. Und der Kuschit beugte sich nieder vor Joab und lief hin.

Then said Joab to the Cushite, Go, tell the king what thou hast seen. And the Cushite bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.

Da sprach Achimaaz, der Sohn Zadoks, wiederum zu Joab: Was auch geschehen möge, laß doch auch mich hinter dem Kuschiten herlaufen! Und Joab sprach: Warum willst du denn laufen, mein Sohn, da für dich keine einträgliche Botschaft da ist? -

Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But come what may, let me, I pray thee, also run after the Cushite. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou wilt have no reward for the tidings?

Was auch geschehen möge, ich will laufen. - Und er sprach zu ihm: Laufe! Und Achimaaz lief den Weg des Jordankreises und kam dem Kuschiten zuvor.

But come what may, [said he], I will run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and outran the Cushite.

Und David saß zwischen den beiden Toren; und der Wächter ging auf das Dach des Tores, auf die Mauer, und er erhob seine Augen und sah, und siehe, ein Mann, der allein lief.

Now David was sitting between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, a man running alone.

Und der Wächter rief und berichtete es dem König. Und der König sprach: Wenn er allein ist, so ist eine Botschaft in seinem Munde. Und er kam stets näher und näher.

And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.

Da sah der Wächter einen anderen Mann laufen; und der Wächter rief dem Torhüter zu und sprach: Siehe, ein Mann, der allein läuft! Und der König sprach: Auch dieser ist ein Bote.

And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold, [another] man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.

Und der Wächter sprach: Ich sehe den Lauf des ersten an für den Lauf des Achimaaz, des Sohnes Zadoks. Und der König sprach: Das ist ein guter Mann, und er kommt zu guter Botschaft.

And the watchman said, I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.

Und Achimaaz rief und sprach zu dem König: Friede! Und er beugte sich vor dem König auf sein Antlitz zur Erde nieder und sprach: Gepriesen sei Jehova, dein Gott, der die Männer überliefert hat, die ihre Hand erhoben haben wider meinen Herrn, den König!

And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, Blessed be Jehovah thy God, who hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.

Und der König sprach: Geht es dem Jüngling, dem Absalom, wohl? Und Achimaaz sprach: Ich sah ein großes Getümmel, als Joab den Knecht des Königs und deinen Knecht absandte; aber ich weiß nicht, was es war.

And the king said, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king`s servant, even me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.

Und der König sprach: Wende dich, stelle dich hierher. Und er wandte sich und blieb stehen.

And the king said, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.

Und siehe, der Kuschit kam, und der Kuschit sprach: Mein Herr, der König, lasse sich die Botschaft bringen, daß Jehova dir heute Recht verschafft hat von der Hand aller, die wider dich aufgestanden sind.

And, behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, Tidings for my lord the king; for Jehovah hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.

Und der König sprach zu dem Kuschiten: Geht es dem Jüngling, dem Absalom, wohl? Und der Kuschit sprach: Wie dem Jüngling, so möge es den Feinden des Königs, meines Herrn, ergehen und allen, die wider dich aufgestanden sind zum Bösen!

And the king said unto the Cushite, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And the Cushite answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise up against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.

Da wurde der König sehr bewegt, und er stieg hinauf in das Obergemach des Tores und weinte; und während er ging, sprach er also: Mein Sohn Absalom! mein Sohn, mein Sohn Absalom! wäre ich doch an deiner Statt gestorben! Absalom, mein Sohn, mein Sohn!

And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

Kapitel 19

Und es wurde Joab berichtet: Siehe, der König weint und trauert um Absalom.

And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.

Und der Sieg wurde an jenem Tage zur Trauer für das ganze Volk; denn das Volk hörte an jenem Tage sagen: Der König ist betrübt um seinen Sohn.

And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people; for the people heard say that day, The king grieveth for his son.

Und das Volk stahl sich in die Stadt hinein an jenem Tage, wie ein Volk sich wegstiehlt, das zu Schanden geworden, wenn es im Streit geflohen ist.

And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people that are ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

Und der König hatte sein Angesicht verhüllt, und der König schrie mit lauter Stimme: Mein Sohn Absalom! Absalom, mein Sohn, mein Sohn!

And the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

Da begab sich Joab zum König ins Haus und sprach: Du hast heute das Angesicht aller deiner Knechte beschämt, die heute dein Leben errettet haben und das Leben deiner Söhne und deiner Töchter, und das Leben deiner Weiber und das Leben deiner Kebsweiber,

And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, who this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;

indem du liebst, die dich hassen, und hassest, die dich lieben; denn du hast heute kundgetan, daß dir Oberste und Knechte nichts sind; denn heute erkenne ich, daß, wenn Absalom lebendig und wir alle heute tot wären, daß es dann recht wäre in deinen Augen.

in that thou lovest them that hate thee, and hatest them that love thee. For thou hast declared this day, that princes and servants are nought unto thee: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.

Und nun mache dich auf, gehe hinaus und rede zum Herzen deiner Knechte; denn ich schwöre bei Jehova, wenn du nicht hinausgehst, so wird diese Nacht nicht ein Mann bei dir bleiben; und das wäre schlimmer für dich als alles Übel, das über dich gekommen ist von deiner Jugend an bis jetzt.

Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants; for I swear by Jehovah, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry a man with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that hath befallen thee from thy youth until now.

Da machte der König sich auf und setzte sich in das Tor. Und man berichtete allem Volke und sprach: Siehe, der König sitzt im Tore! Da kam alles Volk vor den König. Israel aber war geflohen, ein jeder nach seinen Zelten.

Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king is sitting in the gate: and all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his tent.

Und das ganze Volk haderte miteinander unter allen Stämmen Israels und sprach: Der König hat uns aus der Hand unserer Feinde errettet, und er hat uns befreit aus der Hand der Philister; und jetzt ist er vor Absalom aus dem Lande geflohen.

And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, and he saved us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land from Absalom.

Absalom aber, den wir über uns gesalbt hatten, ist im Streit gestorben; und nun, warum schweiget ihr davon, den König zurückzuführen?

And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?

Und der König David sandte zu Zadok und zu Abjathar, den Priestern, und sprach: Redet zu den Ältesten von Juda und sprechet: Warum wollt ihr die letzten sein, den König in sein Haus zurückzuführen? denn die Rede des ganzen Israel ist zum König in sein Haus gekommen.

And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, [to bring him] to his house.

Meine Brüder seid ihr, ihr seid mein Gebein und mein Fleisch; und warum wollt ihr die letzten sein, den König zurückzuführen?

Ye are my brethren, ye are my bone and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?

Und zu Amasa sollt ihr sagen: Bist du nicht mein Gebein und mein Fleisch? So soll mir Gott tun und so hinzufügen, wenn du nicht alle Tage Heeroberster vor mir sein sollst an Joabs Statt!

And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.

Und er neigte das Herz aller Männer von Juda wie eines Mannes Herz; und sie entboten dem Könige: Kehre zurück, du und alle deine Knechte.

And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as [the heart of] one man; so that they sent unto the king, [saying], Return thou, and all thy servants.

Und der König kehrte zurück und kam bis an den Jordan; und Juda kam nach Gilgal, dem König entgegen, um den König über den Jordan zu führen.

So the king returned, and came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over the Jordan.

Da eilte Simei, der Sohn Geras, der Benjaminiter, der von Bachurim war, und kam mit den Männern von Juda herab, dem König David entgegen;

And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, who was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.

und mit ihm waren tausend Mann von Benjamin, und Ziba, der Diener des Hauses Sauls, und seine fünfzehn Söhne und seine zwanzig Knechte mit ihm; und sie zogen über den Jordan, dem König entgegen.

And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went through the Jordan in the presence of the king.

(Eine Fähre aber fuhr über, um das Haus des Königs hinüberzuführen und zu tun, was gut war in seinen Augen.) Und Simei, der Sohn Geras, fiel vor dem König nieder, als er im Begriff stand, über den Jordan zu fahren.

And there went over a ferry-boat to bring over the king`s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, when he was come over the Jordan.

Und er sprach zu dem König: Mein Herr wolle mir keine Verschuldung zurechnen; und gedenke nicht, wie dein Knecht sich vergangen hat an dem Tage, da mein Herr, der König, aus Jerusalem zog, daß der König es zu Herzen nehme!

And he said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

Denn dein Knecht weiß wohl, daß ich gesündigt habe. Und siehe, ich bin heute gekommen, der erste vom ganzen Hause Joseph, um hinabzugehen, meinem Herrn, dem König, entgegen.

For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come this day the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.

Und Abisai, der Sohn der Zeruja, antwortete und sprach: Sollte nicht Simei dafür getötet werden, daß er dem Gesalbten Jehovas geflucht hat?

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed Jehovah`s anointed?

Aber David sprach: Was haben wir miteinander zu schaffen, ihr Söhne der Zeruja, daß ihr mir heute zu Widersachern werdet? Sollte heute ein Mann in Israel getötet werden? Denn weiß ich nicht, daß ich heute König bin über Israel?

And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

Und der König sprach zu Simei: Du sollst nicht sterben! Und der König schwur ihm.

And the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.

Und Mephiboseth, der Sohn Sauls, kam herab, dem König entgegen. Und er hatte seine Füße nicht gereinigt und seinen Bart nicht gemacht und seine Kleider nicht gewaschen von dem Tage an, da der König weggegangen war, bis zu dem Tage, da er in Frieden einzog.

And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace.

Und es geschah, als Jerusalem dem König entgegenkam, da sprach der König zu ihm: Warum bist du nicht mit mir gezogen, Mephiboseth? Und er sprach:

And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?

Mein Herr König! mein Knecht hat mich betrogen; denn dein Knecht sprach: Ich will mir den Esel satteln und darauf reiten und mit dem König ziehen, denn dein Knecht ist lahm;

And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go with the king; because thy servant is lame.

und er hat deinen Knecht bei meinem Herrn, dem König verleumdet. Aber mein Herr, der König, ist wie ein Engel Gottes: so tue, was gut ist in deinen Augen.

And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

Denn das ganze Haus meines Vaters war nichts anderes als Männer des Todes vor meinem Herrn, dem König; und doch hast du deinen Knecht unter die gesetzt, welche an deinem Tische essen. Und was für ein Recht habe ich noch? Und um was hätte ich noch zum König zu schreien?

For all my father`s house were but dead men before my lord the king; yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should cry any more unto the king?

Und der König sprach zu ihm: Warum redest du noch von deinen Sachen? Ich sage: Du und Ziba, ihr sollt die Felder teilen.

And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I say, Thou and Ziba divide the land.

Da sprach Mephiboseth zu dem König: Er mag auch das Ganze nehmen, nachdem mein Herr, der König, in Frieden in sein Haus gekommen ist.

And Mephibosheth said unto the king, yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come in peace unto his own house.

Und Barsillai, der Gileaditer, kam von Rogelim herab und ging mit dem König über den Jordan, um ihn über den Jordan zu geleiten.

And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he went over the Jordan with the king, to conduct him over the Jordan.

Barsillai war aber sehr alt, ein Mann von achtzig Jahren; und er hatte den König versorgt, als er zu Machanaim weilte, denn er war ein sehr reicher Mann.

Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.

Und der König sprach zu Barsillai: Gehe du mit mir hinüber, und ich will dich bei mir versorgen zu Jerusalem.

And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will sustain thee with me in Jerusalem.

Und Barsillai sprach zu dem König: Wie viel sind noch der Tage meiner Lebensjahre, daß ich mit dem König nach Jerusalem hinaufziehen sollte?

And Barzillai said unto the king, How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?

Ich bin heute achtzig Jahre alt; kann ich Gutes und Schlechtes unterscheiden? oder kann dein Knecht schmecken, was ich esse und was ich trinke? oder kann ich noch auf die Stimme der Sänger und der Sängerinnen horchen? Und warum sollte dein Knecht meinem Herrn, dem König, noch zur Last sein?

I am this day fourscore years old: can I discern between good and bad? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?

Dein Knecht würde nur auf kurze Zeit mit dem König über den Jordan gehen; und warum sollte der König mir diese Vergeltung erweisen?

Thy servant would but just go over the Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?

Laß doch deinen Knecht zurückkehren, daß ich in meiner Stadt sterbe, bei dem Grabe meines Vaters und meiner Mutter. Aber siehe, hier ist dein Knecht Kimham: er möge mit meinem Herrn, dem König, hinübergehen; und tue ihm, was gut ist in deinen Augen.

Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold, thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.

Und der König sprach: Kimham soll mit mir hinübergehen, und ich will ihm tun, was gut ist in deinen Augen; und alles, was du von mir begehren wirst, will ich für dich tun.

And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.

Und alles Volk ging über den Jordan, und auch der König ging hinüber. Und der König küßte Barsillai und segnete ihn; und er kehrte an seinen Ort zurück.

And all the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over: and the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.

Und der König ging hinüber nach Gilgal, und Kimham ging mit ihm hinüber. Und alles Volk von Juda, und auch die Hälfte des Volkes von Israel, führte den König hinüber.

So the king went over to Gilgal, and Chimham went over with him: and all the people of Judah brought the king over, and also half the people of Israel.

Und siehe, alle Männer von Israel kamen zu dem König und sprachen zu dem König: Warum haben unsere Brüder, die Männer von Juda, dich weggestohlen und den König und sein Haus und alle Männer Davids mit ihm über den Jordan geführt?

And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and brought the king, and his household, over the Jordan, and all David`s men with him?

Und alle Männer von Juda antworteten den Männern von Israel: Weil der König mir nahe steht; und warum bist du denn über diese Sache erzürnt? Haben wir etwa von dem König Nahrung empfangen, oder hat er uns irgend ein Geschenk gemacht?

And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then are ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all at the king`s cost? or hath he given us any gift?

Aber die Männer von Israel antworteten den Männern von Juda und sprachen: Ich habe zehn Teile an dem König, und habe auch an David mehr Anrecht als du; und warum hast du mich gering geachtet? und ist nicht mein Wort das erste gewesen, meinen König zurückzuführen? Und das Wort der Männer von Juda war härter als das Wort der Männer von Israel.

And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more [right] in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

Kapitel 20

Und daselbst war zufällig ein Mann Belials, sein Name war Scheba, der Sohn Bikris, ein Benjaminiter; und er stieß in die Posaune und sprach: Wir haben kein Teil an David und kein Erbteil an dem Sohne Isais! Ein jeder zu seinen Zelten, Israel!

And there happened to be there a base fellow, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew the trumpet, and said, We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel.

Da zogen alle Männer von Israel von David hinweg, Scheba, dem Sohne Bikris, nach. Die Männer von Juda aber hingen ihrem König an, vom Jordan bis Jerusalem.

So all the men of Israel went up from following David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah clave unto their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

Und David kam nach seinem Hause, nach Jerusalem. Und der König nahm die zehn Kebsweiber, die er zurückgelassen hatte, um das Haus zu bewahren, und tat sie in Gewahrsam und versorgte sie; er ging aber nicht zu ihnen ein; und sie waren eingeschlossen bis zum Tage ihres Todes, als Witwen lebend.

And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and provided them with sustenance, but went not in unto them. So they were shut up unto the day of their death, living in widowhood.

Und der König sprach zu Amasa: Berufe mir die Männer von Juda binnen drei Tagen, und stelle dich selbst hier ein.

Then said the king to Amasa, Call me the men of Judah together within three days, and be thou here present.

Und Amasa ging hin, Juda zu berufen; aber er verzog über die bestimmte Zeit, die er ihm bestimmt hatte.

So Amasa went to call [the men of] Judah together; but he tarried longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

Da sprach David zu Abisai: Nun wird uns Scheba, der Sohn Bikris, mehr Übles tun als Absalom. Nimm du die Knechte deines Herrn und jage ihm nach, ob er nicht feste Städte für sich gefunden und sich unseren Augen entzogen hat.

And David said to Abishai, Now will Sheba the son of Bichri do us more harm than did Absalom: take thou thy lord`s servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him fortified cities, and escape out of our sight.

Da zogen die Männer Joabs aus, ihm nach, und die Kerethiter und die Pelethiter und alle die Helden; und sie zogen aus von Jerusalem, um Scheba, dem Sohne Bikris, nachzujagen.

And there went out after him Joab`s men, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

Sie waren bei dem großen Steine, der zu Gibeon ist, da kam Amasa ihnen entgegen. Und Joab war mit seinem Waffenrock als seinem Gewande umgürtet, und darüber war der Gürtel des Schwertes, das in seiner Scheide an seinen Lenden befestigt war; und als er hervortrat, fiel es heraus.

When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. And Joab was girded with his apparel of war that he had put on, and thereon was a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out.

Und Joab sprach zu Amasa: Geht es dir wohl, mein Bruder? Und Joab faßte mit der rechten Hand Amasas Bart, um ihn zu küssen.

And Joab said to Amasa, Is it well with thee, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

Amasa hatte aber nicht achtgegeben auf das Schwert, das in Joabs Hand war; und Joab schlug ihn damit in den Bauch und schüttete seine Eingeweide aus zur Erde, und gab ihm keinen zweiten Schlag; und er starb. Joab aber und Abisai, sein Bruder, jagten Scheba, dem Sohne Bikris, nach.

But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab`s hand: so he smote him therewith in the body, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. And Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

Und ein Mann von den Knaben Joabs blieb bei Amasa stehen und sprach: Wer Joab lieb hat und wer für David ist, folge Joab nach!

And there stood by him one of Joab`s young men, and said, He that favoreth Joab, and he that is for David, let him follow Joab.

Amasa aber wälzte sich im Blute mitten auf der Straße; und als der Mann sah, daß alles Volk stehen blieb, schaffte er Amasa von der Straße auf das Feld und warf ein Oberkleid über ihn, da er sah, daß jeder, der an ihn herankam, stehen blieb.

And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a garment over him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still.

Als er von der Straße weggeschafft war, zog jedermann vorüber, Joab nach, um Scheba, dem Sohne Bikris, nachzujagen.

When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

Und er durchzog alle Stämme Israels nach Abel und Beth-Maaka und ganz Berim; und sie versammelten sich und kamen ihm ebenfalls nach.

And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, and to Beth-maacah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and went also after him.

Und sie kamen und belagerten ihn in Abel-Beth-Maaka, und sie schütteten einen Wall gegen die Stadt auf, so daß derselbe an der Vormauer stand; und alles Volk, das mit Joab war, unterwühlte die Mauer, um sie zu stürzen.

And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah, and they cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart; and all the people that were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.

Da rief ein kluges Weib aus der Stadt: Höret höret! Sprechet doch zu Joab: Nahe hierher, daß ich zu dir rede!

Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak with thee.

Und er näherte sich ihr. Und das Weib sprach: Bist du Joab? Und er sprach: Ich bin's. Und sie sprach zu ihm: Höre die Worte deiner Magd! Und er sprach: Ich höre.

And he came near unto her; and the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he answered, I am. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thy handmaid. And he answered, I do hear.

Und sie sprach und sagte: Früher pflegte man zu sprechen und zu sagen: Man frage nur in Abel; und so war man fertig.

Then she spake, saying, They were wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask [counsel] at Abel: and so they ended [the matter].

Ich bin von den Friedsamen, den Getreuen Israels; du suchst eine Stadt und Mutter in Israel zu töten. Warum willst du das Erbteil Jehovas verschlingen?

I am of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou seekest to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of Jehovah?

Und Joab antwortete und sprach: Fern, fern sei es von mir, daß ich verschlingen und daß ich verderben sollte! Die Sache ist nicht also;

And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.

sondern ein Mann vom Gebirge Ephraim, sein Name ist Scheba, der Sohn Bikris, hat seine Hand wider den König, wider David, erhoben; ihn allein gebet heraus, so will ich von der Stadt abziehen. Und das Weib sprach zu Joab: Siehe, sein Kopf soll dir über die Mauer zugeworfen werden.

The matter is not so: but a man of the hill-country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David; deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.

Und das Weib kam zu dem ganzen Volke mit ihrer Klugheit; und sie hieben Scheba, dem Sohne Bikris, den Kopf ab und warfen ihn Joab zu. Und er stieß in die Posaune, und sie zerstreuten sich von der Stadt hinweg, ein jeder nach seinen Zelten; und Joab kehrte zu dem König nach Jerusalem zurück.

Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. And he blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

Und Joab war über das ganze Heer Israels; und Benaja, der Sohn Jojadas, war über die Kerethiter und über die Pelethiter;

Now Joab was over all the host of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites;

und Adoram war über die Fron; und Josaphat, der Sohn Ahiluds, war Geschichtsschreiber;

and Adoram was over the men subject to taskwork; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;

und Scheja war Schreiber; und Zadok und Abjathar waren Priester;

and Sheva was scribe; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;

und auch Ira, der Jairiter, war Krondiener Davids.

and also Ira the Jairite was chief minister unto David.

Kapitel 21

Und es war Hungersnot in den Tagen Davids drei Jahre, Jahr auf Jahr. Und David suchte das Angesicht Jehovas; und Jehova sprach: Es ist wegen Sauls und wegen des Bluthauses, weil er die Gibeoniter getötet hat.

And there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David sought the face of Jehovah. And Jehovah said, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he put to death the Gibeonites.

Da berief der König die Gibeoniter und redete zu ihnen. (Die Gibeoniter waren aber nicht von den Kindern Israel, sondern von dem Reste der Amoriter; und die Kinder Israel hatten ihnen geschworen; Saul aber suchte sie zu erschlagen, da er für die Kinder Israel und Juda eiferte.)

And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah);

Und David sprach zu den Gibeonitern: Was soll ich für euch tun, und womit soll ich Sühnung tun, daß ihr das Erbteil Jehovas segnet?

and David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of Jehovah?

Und die Gibeoniter sprachen zu ihm: Es ist uns nicht um Silber und Gold zu tun betreffs Sauls und betreffs seines Hauses, und es ist uns nicht darum zu tun, jemand in Israel zu töten. Und er sprach: Was ihr saget, will ich für euch tun.

And the Gibeonites said unto him, It is no matter of silver or gold between us and Saul, or his house; neither is it for us to put any man to death in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.

Da sprachen sie zu dem König: Der Mann, der uns vernichtet hat, und der wider uns sann, daß wir vertilgt würden, um nicht mehr zu bestehen in allen Grenzen Israels: -

And they said unto the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us, [that] we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the borders of Israel,

man gebe uns sieben Männer von seinen Söhnen, daß wir sie dem Jehova aufhängen zu Gibea Sauls, des Erwählten Jehovas. Und der König sprach: Ich will sie geben.

let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto Jehovah in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of Jehovah. And the king said, I will give them.

Aber der König verschonte Mephiboseth, den Sohn Jonathans, des Sohnes Sauls, um des Schwures Jehovas willen, der zwischen ihnen war, zwischen David und Jonathan, dem Sohne Sauls.

But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of Jehovah`s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

Und der König nahm die beiden Söhne Rizpas, der Tochter Ajas, die sie dem Saul geboren hatte, Armoni und Mephiboseth, und die fünf Söhne Michals, der Tochter Sauls, die sie dem Adriel geboren hatte, dem Sohne Barsillais, des Meholathiters,

But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she bare to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:

und er gab sie in die Hand der Gibeoniter; und sie hängten sie auf dem Berge vor Jehova auf. Und es fielen die sieben zugleich, und sie wurden getötet in den ersten Tagen der Ernte, im Anfang der Gerstenernte.

And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the mountain before Jehovah, and they fell [all] seven together. And they were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, at the beginning of barley harvest.

Da nahm Rizpa, die Tochter Ajas, Sacktuch, und breitete es sich aus auf dem Felsen, vom Anfang der Ernte an, bis das Wasser vom Himmel über sie troff; und sie ließ das Gevögel des Himmels nicht auf ihnen ruhen bei Tage, noch das Getier des Feldes bei Nacht.

And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water was poured upon them from heaven; and she suffered neither the birds of the heavens to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.

Und es wurde David berichtet, was Rizpa, die Tochter Ajas, das Kebsweib Sauls, getan hatte.

And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.

Da ging David hin und nahm von den Bürgern von Jabes-Gilead die Gebeine Sauls und die Gebeine seines Sohnes Jonathan, welche sie von dem Marktplatze zu Beth-Schan heimlich weggenommen, wo die Philister sie aufgehängt hatten an dem Tage, da die Philister Saul schlugen auf dem Gilboa.

And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hanged them, in the day that the Philistines slew Saul in Gilboa;

Und er brachte die Gebeine Sauls und die Gebeine seines Sohnes Jonathan von dannen herauf; und man sammelte die Gebeine der Gehängten,

and he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son: and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged.

und begrub sie bei den Gebeinen Sauls und Jonathans, seines Sohnes, im Lande Benjamin, zu Zela, im Begräbnis seines Vaters Kis; und man tat alles, was der König geboten hatte. Und danach ließ Gott sich für das Land erbitten.

And they buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in Zela, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was entreated for the land.

Und wiederum entstand ein Streit der Philister mit Israel. Und David zog hinab, und seine Knechte mit ihm, und sie stritten mit den Philistern. Und David war ermattet;

And the Philistines had war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines. And David waxed faint;

und Jischbi-Benob, der von den Söhnen des Rapha war (das Gewicht seiner Lanzenspitze war dreihundert Sekel Erz an Gewicht, und er war neu gerüstet), gedachte David zu erschlagen.

and Ishbibenob, who was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear was three hundred [shekels] of brass in weight, he being girded with a new [sword], thought to have slain David.

Aber Abisai, der Sohn der Zeruja, kam ihm zu Hilfe und schlug den Philister und tötete ihn. Damals schwuren die Männer Davids ihm zu und sprachen: Du sollst nicht mehr mit uns ausziehen zum Streit, daß du die Leuchte Israels nicht auslöschest!

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succored him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the lamp of Israel.

Und es geschah hernach, da begann wiederum der Streit mit den Philistern, zu Gob. Damals erschlug Sibbekai, der Huschathiter, den Saph, der von den Söhnen des Rapha war.

And it came to pass after this, that there was again war with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Saph, who was of the sons of the giant.

Und wiederum begann der Streit mit den Philistern, zu Gob. Und Elchanan, der Sohn Jaare-Orgims, der Bethlehemiter, erschlug Goliath, den Gathiter; und der Schaft seines Speeres war wie ein Weberbaum.

And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob; and Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim the Beth-lehemite slew Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver`s beam.

Und wiederum entstand ein Streit zu Gath. Da war ein Mann von großer Länge, und er hatte je sechs Finger an seinen Händen und je sechs Zehen an seinen Füßen, 24 an der Zahl; und auch er war dem Rapha geboren worden.

And there was again war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.

Und er höhnte Israel; und Jonathan, der Sohn Schimeas, des Bruders Davids, erschlug ihn.

And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David`s brother, slew him.

Diese vier wurden dem Rapha zu Gath geboren; und sie fielen durch die Hand Davids und durch die Hand seiner Knechte.

These four were born to the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

Kapitel 22

Und David redete zu Jehova die Worte dieses Liedes an dem Tage, da Jehova ihn aus der Hand aller seiner Feinde und aus der Hand Sauls errettet hatte; und er sprach:

And David spake unto Jehovah the words of this song in the day that Jehovah delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:

Jehova ist mein Fels und meine Burg und mein Erretter.

and he said, Jehovah is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, even mine;

Gott ist mein Fels, auf ihn werde ich trauen, mein Schild und das Horn meines Heils, meine hohe Feste und meine Zuflucht. Mein Retter, von Gewalttat wirst du mich retten!

God, my rock, in him will I take refuge; My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge; My saviour, thou savest me from violence.

Ich werde Jehova anrufen, der zu loben ist, und ich werde gerettet werden von meinen Feinden.

I will call upon Jehovah, who is worthy to be praised: So shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Denn mich umfingen die Wogen des Todes, die Ströme Belials erschreckten mich;

For the waves of death compassed me; The floods of ungodliness made me afraid:

die Bande des Scheols umringten mich, es ereilten mich die Fallstricke des Todes.

The cords of Sheol were round about me; The snares of death came upon me.

In meiner Bedrängnis rief ich zu Jehova, und ich rief zu meinem Gott; und er hörte aus seinem Tempel meine Stimme, und mein Schrei kam in seine Ohren.

In my distress I called upon Jehovah; Yea, I called unto my God: And he heard my voice out of his temple, And my cry [came] into his ears.

Da wankte und bebte die Erde; die Grundfesten des Himmels zitterten und wankten, weil er entbrannt war.

Then the earth shook and trembled, The foundations of heaven quaked And were shaken, because he was wroth.

Rauch stieg auf von seiner Nase, und Feuer fraß aus seinem Munde; glühende Kohlen brannten aus ihm.

There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, And fire out of his mouth devoured: Coals were kindled by it.

Und er neigte die Himmel und fuhr hernieder, und Dunkel war unter seinen Füßen.

He bowed the heavens also, and came down; And thick darkness was under his feet.

Und er fuhr auf einem Cherub und flog daher, und er erschien auf den Fittichen des Windes.

And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly; Yea, he was seen upon the wings of the wind.

Und Finsternis machte er rings um sich her zum Gezelt, Sammlung der Wasser, dichtes Himmelsgewölk.

And he made darkness pavilions round about him, Gathering of waters, thick clouds of the skies.

Aus dem Glanze vor ihm brannten feurige Kohlen.

At the brightness before him Coals of fire were kindled.

Es donnerte Jehova vom Himmel her, und der Höchste ließ seine Stimme erschallen.

Jehovah thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered his voice.

Und er schoß Pfeile und zerstreute sie, seinen Blitz, und verwirrte sie.

And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; Lightning, and discomfited them.

Da wurden gesehen die Betten des Meeres, aufgedeckt die Grundfesten des Erdkreises durch das Schelten Jehovas, vor dem Schnauben des Hauches seiner Nase.

Then the channels of the sea appeared, The foundations of the world were laid bare, By the rebuke of Jehovah, At the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

Er streckte seine Hand aus von der Höhe, er nahm mich, er zog mich aus großen Wassern;

He sent from on high, he took me; He drew me out of many waters;

Er errettete mich von meinem starken Feinde, von meinen Hassern; denn sie waren mächtiger als ich.

He delivered me from my strong enemy, From them that hated me; for they were too mighty for me.

Sie ereilten mich am Tage meines Unglücks, aber Jehova ward mir zur Stütze.

They came upon me in the day of my calamity; But Jehovah was my stay.

Und er führte mich heraus ins Weite, er befreite mich, weil er Lust an mir hatte.

He brought me forth also into a large place; He delivered me, because he delighted in me.

Jehova vergalt mir nach meiner Gerechtigkeit, nach der Reinheit meiner Hände erstattete er mir.

Jehovah rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

Denn ich habe bewahrt die Wege Jehovas, und bin von meinem Gott nicht frevelhaft abgewichen.

For I have kept the ways of Jehovah, And have not wickedly departed from my God.

Denn alle seine Rechte waren vor mir, und seine Satzungen - ich bin nicht davon gewichen;

For all his ordinances were before me; And as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.

Und ich war vollkommen gegen ihn und hütete mich vor meiner Ungerechtigkeit.

I was also perfect toward him; And I kept myself from mine iniquity.

Und Jehova erstattete mir nach meiner Gerechtigkeit, nach meiner Reinheit vor seinen Augen.

Therefore hath Jehovah recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness in his eyesight.

Gegen den Gütigen erzeigst du dich gütig, gegen den vollkommenen Mann erzeigst du dich vollkommen;

With the merciful thou wilt show thyself merciful; With the perfect man thou wilt show thyself perfect;

gegen den Reinen erzeigst du dich rein, und gegen den Verkehrten erzeigst du dich entgegenstreitend.

With the pure thou wilt show thyself pure; And with the perverse thou wilt show thyself froward.

Und du wirst retten das elende Volk; aber deine Augen sind wider die Hoffärtigen, die du erniedrigen wirst.

And the afflicted people thou wilt save; But thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.

Denn du bist meine Leuchte, Jehova; und Jehova erhellt meine Finsternis.

For thou art my lamp, O Jehovah; And Jehovah will lighten my darkness.

Denn mit dir werde ich gegen eine Schar anrennen, mit meinem Gott werde ich eine Mauer überspringen.

For by thee I run upon a troop; By my God do I leap over a wall.

Gott - sein Weg ist vollkommen; Jehovas Wort ist geläutert; ein Schild ist er allen, die auf ihn trauen.

As for God, his way is perfect: The word of Jehovah is tried; He is a shield unto all them that take refuge in him.

Denn wer ist Gott, außer Jehova, und wer ein Fels, außer unserem Gott?

For who is God, save Jehovah? And who is a rock, save our God?

Gott ist meine starke Feste, und er lenkt vollkommen meinen Weg.

God is my strong fortress; And he guideth the perfect in his way.

Er macht meine Füße denen der Hindinnen gleich, und stellt mich hin auf meine Höhen.

He maketh his feet like hinds` [feet], And setteth me upon my high places.

Er lehrt meine Hände den Streit, und meine Arme spannen den ehernen Bogen.

He teacheth my hands to war, So that mine arms do bend a bow of brass.

Und du gabst mir den Schild deines Heils, und deine Herablassung machte mich groß.

Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation; And thy gentleness hath made me great.

Du machtest Raum meinen Schritten unter mir, und meine Knöchel haben nicht gewankt.

Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; And my feet have not slipped.

Meinen Feinden jagte ich nach und vertilgte sie; und ich kehrte nicht um, bis sie aufgerieben waren.

I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; Neither did I turn again till they were consumed.

Und ich rieb sie auf und zerschmetterte sie; und sie standen nicht wieder auf, und sie fielen unter meine Füße.

And I have consumed them, and smitten them through, so that they cannot arise: Yea, they are fallen under my feet.

Und du umgürtetest mich mit Kraft zum Streit, beugtest unter mich, die wider mich aufstanden.

For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle; Thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.

Und du gabst mir den Rücken meiner Feinde; meine Hasser, ich vernichtete sie.

Thou hast also made mine enemies turn their backs unto me, That I might cut off them that hate me.

Sie blickten umher, und kein Retter war da - zu Jehova, und er antwortete ihnen nicht.

They looked, but there was none to save; Even unto Jehovah, but he answered them not.

Und ich zermalmte sie wie Staub der Erde; wie Straßenkot zertrat, zerstampfte ich sie.

Then did I beat them small as the dust of the earth, I did crush them as the mire of the streets, and did spread them abroad.

Und du errettetest mich aus den Streitigkeiten meines Volkes; du bewahrtest mich auf zum Haupte der Nationen; ein Volk, das ich nicht kannte, dient mir.

Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people; Thou hast kept me to be the head of the nations: A people whom I have not known shall serve me.

Die Söhne der Fremde unterwarfen sich mir mit Schmeichelei; beim Hören des Ohres gehorchten sie mir.

The foreigners shall submit themselves unto me: As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me.

The foreigners shall fade away, And shall come trembling out of their close places.

Jehova lebt, und gepriesen sei mein Fels! und erhoben werde der Gott, der Fels meines Heils!

Jehovah liveth; And blessed be my rock; And exalted be God, the rock of my salvation,

Der Gott, der mir Rache gab und die Völker unter mich niederwarf;

Even the God that executeth vengeance for me, And that bringeth down peoples under me,

und der mich herausführte aus der Mitte meiner Feinde. Ja, du erhöhtest mich über die, welche wider mich aufstanden, von dem Manne der Gewalttat befreitest du mich.

And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: Yea, thou liftest me up above them that rise up against me; Thou deliverest me from the violent man.

Darum, Jehova, will ich dich preisen unter den Nationen und Psalmen singen deinem Namen,

Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Jehovah, among the nations, And will sing praises unto thy name.

Dich, der groß macht die Rettungen seines Königs, und Güte erweist seinem Gesalbten, David und seinem Samen ewiglich.

Great deliverance giveth he to his king, And showeth lovingkindness to his anointed, To David and to his seed, for evermore.

Kapitel 23

Und dies sind die letzten Worte Davids: Es spricht David, der Sohn Isais, und es spricht der hochgestellte Mann, der Gesalbte des Gottes Jakobs und der Liebliche in Gesängen Israels:

Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse saith, And the man who was raised on high saith, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel:

Der Geist Jehovas hat durch mich geredet, und sein Wort war auf meiner Zunge.

The Spirit of Jehovah spake by me, And his word was upon my tongue.

Es hat gesprochen der Gott Israels, der Fels Israels zu mir geredet: Ein Herrscher unter den Menschen, gerecht, ein Herrscher in Gottesfurcht;

The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spake to me: One that ruleth over men righteously, That ruleth in the fear of God,

und er wird sein wie das Licht des Morgens, wenn die Sonne aufgeht, ein Morgen ohne Wolken: von ihrem Glanze nach dem Regen sproßt das Grün aus der Erde.

[He shall be] as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, A morning without clouds, [When] the tender grass [springeth] out of the earth, Through clear shining after rain.

Obwohl mein Haus nicht also ist bei Gott, so hat er mir doch einen ewigen Bund gesetzt, geordnet in allem und verwahrt; denn dies ist all meine Rettung und all mein Begehr, obwohl er es nicht sprossen läßt!

Verily my house is not so with God; Yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, Ordered in all things, and sure: For it is all my salvation, and all [my] desire, Although he maketh it not to grow.

Aber die Söhne Belials sind allesamt wie Dornen, die man wegwirft; denn mit der Hand faßt man sie nicht an;

But the ungodly shall be all of them as thorns to be thrust away, Because they cannot be taken with the hand

Und der Mann, der sie anrührt, versieht sich mit Eisen und Speeresschaft; und mit Feuer werden sie gänzlich verbrannt an ihrer Stätte. -

But the man that toucheth them Must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear: And they shall be utterly burned with fire in [their] place

Dies sind die Namen der Helden, welche David hatte: Joscheb-Baschebeth, der Tachkemoniter, das Haupt der Anführer; er... Adino, der Ezniter, war wider achthundert, die er auf einmal erschlug.

These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite, against eight hundred slain at one time.

Und nach ihm Eleasar, der Sohn Dodos, der Sohn eines Achochiters; er war unter den drei Helden mit David, als sie die Philister verhöhnten, die daselbst zum Streit versammelt waren, und als die Männer von Israel wegzogen.

And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away.

Selbiger machte sich auf und schlug unter den Philistern, bis seine Hand ermüdete und seine Hand am Schwerte klebte; und Jehova schaffte an jenem Tage eine große Rettung. Das Volk aber kehrte um, ihm nach, nur um zu plündern.

He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword; and Jehovah wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to take spoil.

Und nach ihm Schamma, der Sohn Ages, des Harariters. Und die Philister versammelten sich zu einer Schar; und es war daselbst ein Ackerstück voll Linsen; das Volk aber floh vor den Philistern.

And after him was Shammah the son of Agee a Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Philistines.

Da stellte er sich mitten auf das Stück und rettete es und schlug die Philister; und Jehova schaffte eine große Rettung.

But he stood in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and slew the Philistines; and Jehovah wrought a great victory.

Und drei von den dreißig Häuptern gingen hinab und kamen zur Erntezeit zu David, in die Höhle Adullam; und eine Schar der Philister lagerte im Tale Rephaim.

And three of the thirty chief men went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

David war aber damals auf der Bergfeste, und eine Aufstellung der Philister war damals zu Bethlehem.

And David was then in the stronghold; and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Beth-lehem.

Und David hatte ein Gelüste und sprach: Wer wird mich mit Wasser tränken aus der Zisterne von Bethlehem, die am Tore ist?

And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate!

Da brachen die drei Helden durch das Lager der Philister und schöpften Wasser aus der Zisterne von Bethlehem, die am Tore ist, und trugen und brachten es zu David. Aber er wollte es nicht trinken und goß es aus als Trankopfer dem Jehova;

And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto Jehovah.

und er sprach: Fern sei es von mir, Jehova, daß ich solches tue! Sollte ich das Blut der Männer trinken, die mit Gefahr ihres Lebens hingegangen sind? Und er wollte es nicht trinken. Das taten die drei Helden.

And he said, Be it far from me, O Jehovah, that I should do this: [shall I drink] the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

Und Abisai, der Bruder Joabs, der Sohn der Zeruja, war ein Haupt der Drei. Und er schwang seinen Speer über dreihundert, die er erschlug; und er hatte einen Namen unter den Dreien.

And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them, and had a name among the three.

War er vor den Dreien nicht geehrt, so daß er ihr Oberster wurde? aber an die ersten Drei reichte er nicht.

Was he not most honorable of the three? therefore he was made their captain: howbeit he attained not unto the [first] three.

Und Benaja, der Sohn Jojadas, der Sohn eines tapferen Mannes, groß an Taten, von Kabzeel; selbiger erschlug zwei Löwen von Moab. Und er stieg hinab und erschlug den Löwen in der Grube an einem Schneetage.

And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, he slew the two [sons of] Ariel of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow.

Und er war es, der einen ägyptischen Mann erschlug, einen stattlichen Mann. Und der Ägypter hatte einen Speer in der Hand; er aber ging zu ihm hinab mit einem Stabe, und riß dem Ägypter den Speer aus der Hand und tötete ihn mit seinem eigenen Speere.

And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian`s hand, and slew him with his own spear.

Das tat Benaja, der Sohn Jojadas; und er hatte einen Namen unter den drei Helden.

These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had a name among the three mighty men.

Vor den Dreißigen war er geehrt, aber an die ersten Drei reichte er nicht. Und David setzte ihn in seinen geheimen Rat.

He was more honorable than the thirty, but he attained not to the [first] three. And David set him over his guard.

Asael, der Bruder Joabs, war unter den Dreißig; Elchanan, der Sohn Dodos, von Bethlehem;

Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Beth-lehem,

Schamma, der Haroditer; Elika, der Haroditer;

Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite,

Helez, der Paltiter; Ira, der Sohn Ikkesch', der Tekoiter;

Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite,

Abieser, der Anathothiter; Mebunnai, der Huschathiter;

Abiezer the Anathothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite,

Zalmon, der Achochiter; Maharai, der Netophatiter;

Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite,

Heleb, der Sohn Baanas, der Netophatiter; Ittai, der Sohn Ribais, von Gibea der Kinder Benjamin;

Heleb the son of Baanah the Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin,

Benaja, der Pirhathoniter; Hiddai, von den Bächen Gaasch;

Benaiah a Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash.

Abi-Albon, der Arbathiter; Asmaweth, der Barchumiter;

Abialbon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite,

Eljachba, der Schaalboniter; Bne-Jaschen; Jonathan;

Eliahba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan,

Schamma, der Harariter; Achiam, der Sohn Scharars, der Arariter;

Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Ararite,

Eliphelet, der Sohn Achasbais, des Sohnes des Maakathiters; Eliam, der Sohn Ahitophels, der Giloniter;

Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maacathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,

Jigal, der Sohn Nathans, von Zoba; Bani, der Gaditer;

Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite,

Zelek, der Ammoniter; Nacharai, der Beerothiter, der Waffenträger Joabs, des Sohnes der Zeruja;

Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, armorbearers to Joab the son of Zeruiah,

Ira, der Jithriter; Gareb, der Jithriter;

Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,

Urija, der Hethiter: in allem 37.

Uriah the Hittite: thirty and seven in all.

Kapitel 24

Und der Zorn Jehovas entbrannte abermals wider Israel; und er reizte David wider sie, indem er sprach: Gehe hin, zähle Israel und Juda!

And again the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.

Da sprach der König zu Joab, dem Heerobersten, der bei ihm war: Gehe doch umher durch alle Stämme Israels, von Dan bis Beerseba, und mustert das Volk, damit ich die Zahl des Volkes wisse.

And the king said to Joab the captain of the host, who was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people.

Und Joab sprach zu dem König: Es möge Jehova, dein Gott, zu dem Volke, so viele ihrer auch sind, hundertmal hinzufügen, während die Augen meines Herrn, des Königs, es sehen! Aber warum hat mein Herr, der König, Gefallen an dieser Sache?

And Joab said unto the king, Now Jehovah thy God add unto the people, how many soever they may be, a hundredfold; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

Aber das Wort des Königs blieb fest gegen Joab und gegen die Obersten des Heeres. Und Joab und die Obersten des Heeres zogen aus vor dem König, um das Volk Israel zu mustern.

Notwithstanding, the king`s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

Und sie gingen über den Jordan und lagerten sich zu Aroer, rechts von der Stadt, die mitten im Flußtale von Gad liegt, und nach Jaser hin.

And they passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and unto Jazer:

Und sie kamen nach Gilead und in das Land Tachtim-Hodschi; und sie kamen nach Dan-Jaan und in die Umgegend von Zidon;

then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and round about to Sidon,

und sie kamen zu der festen Stadt Zor und zu allen Städten der Hewiter und der Kanaaniter; und sie zogen hinaus in den Süden von Juda nach Beerseba.

and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beer-sheba.

Und sie zogen umher durch das ganze Land, und kamen am Ende von neun Monaten und zwanzig Tagen nach Jerusalem zurück.

So when they had gone to and from through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

Und Joab gab die Zahl des gemusterten Volkes dem König an; und es waren in Israel 800000 Kriegsmänner, die das Schwert zogen, und der Männer von Juda 500000 Mann.

And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

Aber dem David schlug sein Herz, nachdem er das Volk gezählt hatte; und David sprach zu Jehova: Ich habe sehr gesündigt in dem, was ich getan habe; und nun, Jehova, laß doch die Ungerechtigkeit deines Knechtes vorübergehen, denn ich habe sehr töricht gehandelt!

And David`s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto Jehovah, I have sinned greatly in that which I have done: but now, O Jehovah, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

Und als David am Morgen aufstand, da geschah das Wort Jehovas zu Gad, dem Propheten, dem Seher Davids, indem er sprach:

And when David rose up in the morning, the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet Gad, David`s seer, saying,

Gehe hin und rede zu David: So spricht Jehova: Dreierlei lege ich dir vor; wähle dir eines davon, daß ich es dir tue.

Go and speak unto David, Thus saith Jehovah, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

Und Gad kam zu David und tat es ihm kund und sprach zu ihm: Sollen dir sieben Jahre Hungersnot in dein Land kommen? oder willst du drei Monate vor deinen Feinden fliehen, indem sie dir nachjagen? oder soll drei Tage Pest in deinem Lande sein? Nun wisse und sieh, was für eine Antwort ich dem zurückbringen soll, der mich gesandt hat.

So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy foes while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days` pestilence in thy land? now advise thee, and consider what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

Und David sprach zu Gad: Mir ist sehr angst! Mögen wir doch in die Hand Jehovas fallen, denn seine Erbarmungen sind groß; aber in die Hand der Menschen laß mich nicht fallen!

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of Jehovah; for his mercies are great; and let me not fall into the hand of man.

Da sandte Jehova eine Pest unter Israel, vom Morgen an bis zur bestimmten Zeit; und es starben von dem Volke, von Dan bis Beerseba, 70000 Mann.

So Jehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

Und als der Engel seine Hand gegen Jerusalem ausstreckte, um es zu verderben, da reute Jehova des Übels, und er sprach zu dem Engel, der unter dem Volke verderbte: Genug! ziehe jetzt deine Hand ab. Der Engel Jehovas war aber bei der Tenne Arawnas, des Jebusiters.

And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, Jehovah repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough; now stay thy hand. And the angel of Jehovah was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Und als David den Engel sah, der unter dem Volke schlug, sprach er zu Jehova und sagte: Siehe, ich habe gesündigt, und ich habe verkehrt gehandelt; aber diese Schafe, was haben sie getan? Es sei doch deine Hand wider mich, und wider das Haus meines Vaters!

And David spake unto Jehovah when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father`s house.

Und Gad kam zu David an selbigem Tage und sprach zu ihm: Gehe hinauf, errichte Jehova einen Altar auf der Tenne Arawnas, des Jebusiters.

And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

Und David ging hinauf, nach dem Worte Gads, so wie Jehova geboten hatte.

And David went up according to the saying of Gad, as Jehovah commanded.

Und Arawna blickte hin und sah den König und seine Knechte zu sich herüberkommen; da ging Arawna hinaus und beugte sich vor dem König nieder, mit seinem Antlitz zur Erde.

And Araunah looked forth, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

Und Arawna sprach: Warum kommt mein Herr, der König, zu seinem Knechte? Und David sprach: Die Tenne von dir zu kaufen, um Jehova einen Altar zu bauen, damit die Plage von dem Volke abgewehrt werde.

And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar unto Jehovah, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

Da sprach Arawna zu David: Mein Herr, der König, nehme und opfere, was gut ist in seinen Augen; siehe, die Rinder sind zum Brandopfer, und die Dreschwagen und die Geschirre der Rinder zum Holz:

And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, the oxen for the burnt-offering, and the threshing instruments and the yokes of the oxen for the wood:

alles das, o König, gibt Arawna dem König. Und Arawna sprach zu dem König: Jehova, dein Gott, nehme dich wohlgefällig an!

all this, O king, doth Araunah give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, Jehovah thy God accept thee.

Aber der König sprach zu Arawna: Nein, sondern kaufen will ich es von dir um einen Preis, und ich will Jehova, meinem Gott, nicht umsonst Brandopfer opfern. Und David kaufte die Tenne und die Rinder um fünfzig Sekel Silber.

And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will verily buy it of thee at a price. Neither will I offer burnt-offerings unto Jehovah my God which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

Und David baute daselbst Jehova einen Altar, und opferte Brandopfer und Friedensopfer. Und Jehova ließ sich für das Land erbitten, und die Plage wurde von Israel abgewehrt.

And David built there an altar unto Jehovah, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. So Jehovah was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
