Orion Correlation
Robert Bauval's thesis that the three Giza pyramids mirror the stars of Orion's Belt and encode the sky of c. 10,500 BCE — the 'second hand' of the Giza clock, with the Sphinx as the hour hand.
The Orion Correlation (or Orion Correlation Theory, OCT) is the thesis, developed by the Belgian-born engineer Robert Bauval (b. 1948) and set out in The Orion Mystery (1994, with Adrian Gilbert), that the layout of the three great pyramids of Giza is a deliberate ground-map of the three stars of Orion's Belt. Its evidentiary core has three parts. First, the arrangement: the two larger pyramids (Khufu and Khafre) sit on a diagonal, with the third (Menkaure) offset slightly to one side — mirroring, Bauval argues, the way the third and faintest Belt star (Mintaka) sits offset from the line of the other two. Second, the shafts: the narrow southern shafts of the Great Pyramid point, on the astronomy of c. 2500 BCE, at Orion's Belt and at Sirius — building on earlier shaft-alignment studies by Alexander Badawy and Virginia Trimble. Third, the landscape: the Milky Way, Bauval proposes, corresponds to the Nile, so that the whole Giza plateau is a mirror of the Orion region of the sky.
The "First Time"
The correlation acquires its chronological force from precession. Bauval and Graham Hancock (in Keeper of Genesis / The Message of the Sphinx, 1996) argue that while the shafts fit the sky of the Fourth Dynasty, the ground-map itself best matches the sky of a far earlier epoch — around 10,500 BCE, when Orion's Belt reached the lowest point of its precessional cycle at the meridian, and the Belt's relationship to the horizon matched the pyramids' relationship to the local landscape. They identify this with Zep Tepi, the "First Time" of Egyptian tradition — the primordial age of the gods. On this reading the pyramids, though physically built c. 2500 BCE, encode and memorialise a sky twelve millennia older. It is this epoch — the same one the Great Sphinx's Leo alignment points to — that lets Hancock speak of the "Giza clock": the Sphinx as the hour hand (the Age of Leo) and the Orion-correlated pyramids as the minute hand (the Belt's low culmination), both reading the same deep date.
The mainstream critique
Professional astronomy and Egyptology reject the c. 10,500 BCE claim, and the objections are substantial. The astronomer E. C. Krupp pointed out that to make the pyramids match Orion's Belt as Bauval draws it, the map must be inverted — north and south flipped — an orientation choice that is not obviously justified and that weakens the "obvious" fit. The three-to-three correlation is, critics note, not statistically remarkable given the freedom to select which features to match. And the decisive difficulty is the date decoupling: the pyramids are securely dated by their archaeological context to c. 2500 BCE, so attributing their layout to a 10,500 BCE sky requires the additional, unevidenced claim that Fourth-Dynasty builders deliberately encoded an epoch eight thousand years before their own — a claim the shaft alignments (which fit 2500 BCE) do not need. Mainstream Egyptology treats the Giza complex as a Fourth-Dynasty royal project and the deep-epoch reading as unfounded. The corpus records these objections rather than paraphrasing them away.
In the Wheel of Heaven framework
The corpus's use of the Orion Correlation is careful and partial, mirroring its stance on Graham Hancock generally. What it takes is the checkable astronomy: Orion's Belt did reach its precessional meridian low around 10,500 BCE, and that epoch coincides with the Sphinx's Leo alignment and, more broadly, with the horizon of Göbekli Tepe and the close of the Age of Leo on the corpus's reckoning. As the "second hand" of the Giza clock, the correlation is one more pointer to the deep epoch in which the corpus places the pre-Flood horizon of human capability.
What the corpus does not adopt is the strong claim that the Fourth-Dynasty builders themselves engineered the 10,500 BCE encoding — the same over-reach the mainstream identifies. The framework's own reading is that the Giza monuments are older than the Fourth Dynasty (developed in the Age of Taurus and Age of Leo chapters), which dissolves the date-decoupling problem in a different way: if the complex is a pre-Dynastic inheritance, its deep-epoch astronomy need not be a Fourth-Dynasty memorial at all. This is registered as inferred: the pyramids and the precessional astronomy are fact, but the correlation's intentionality — and the corpus's use of it as an age-marker — are argued rather than asserted, and held alongside Krupp's objections.
