Wheel of Heaven Translation

The canon-cited chapters of Judges: the call of Gid'on (Gideon) and the birth of Shimshon (Samson)

Direct

Established or uncontested across mainstream sources, or a direct description of the project itself.

The Method

Judges (Hebrew Shofetim) tells of the leaders of Israel between the conquest and the monarchy. This translation covers the two chapters that the Raëlian canon cites:

  • Judges 6: the messenger of YHWH calls Gid'on (Gideon); fire rises from the rock and consumes the offering; the sign of the fleece
  • Judges 13: the messenger of YHWH announces the birth of Shimshon (Samson) and goes up in the flame of the altar

Malʾaḵ YHWH is "the messenger of YHWH", and the notes follow how the narrative moves between the messenger and YHWH himself. Verses with a note end in a bracketed marker [ ]; select it to open the note.

Judges 6 — The call of Gid'on (Gideon): the fire from the rock and the fleece

1
And the children of Yisra'el did what was evil in the sight of YHWH; and YHWH gave them into the hand of Midyan seven years.
And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked of Jehovah, saying, Who shall go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?
2
And the hand of Midyan prevailed against Yisra'el; because of Midyan the children of Yisra'el made for themselves the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.
And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
3
And so it was, whenever Yisra'el had sown, that Midyan and Amaleq and the children of the east would come up; they would come up against them.
And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
4
And they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the land, until you come to Azzah, and would leave no sustenance in Yisra'el, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey.
And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
5
For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, and they would come like locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number; and they came into the land to destroy it.
And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6
And Yisra'el was brought very low because of Midyan; and the children of Yisra'el cried out to YHWH.
But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
7
And it came to pass, when the children of Yisra'el cried out to YHWH on account of Midyan,
And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered [their food] under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
8
that YHWH sent a man, a prophet, to the children of Yisra'el; and he said to them, "Thus says YHWH, the Elohim of Yisra'el: 'I brought you up from Mitzrayim, and brought you out of the house of slaves;
And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
9
and I delivered you out of the hand of Mitzrayim and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;
And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the South, and in the lowland.
10
and I said to you, "I am YHWH your Elohim; you shall not fear the elohim of the Emorites, in whose land you dwell." But you have not listened to my voice.'"
And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba); and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11
And the messenger of YHWH came and sat under the oak which was in Ofrah, which belonged to Yo'ash the Avi'ezrite; and his son Gid'on was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from Midyan.
And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (Now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.)
12
And the messenger of YHWH appeared to him and said to him, "YHWH is with you, you mighty man of valor."
And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
13
And Gid'on said to him, "Oh, my lord, if YHWH is with us, why then has all this befallen us? And where are all his wonders which our fathers told us of, saying, 'Did not YHWH bring us up from Mitzrayim?' But now YHWH has cast us off and given us into the hand of Midyan."
And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb`s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
14
And YHWH turned to him and said, "Go in this your might, and save Yisra'el from the hand of Midyan; have I not sent you?"
And it came to pass, when she came [unto him], that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?
15
And he said to him, "Oh, Lord, with what shall I save Yisra'el? Behold, my clan is the poorest in Menasheh, and I am the least in my father's house."
And she said unto him, Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
16
And YHWH said to him, "Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike Midyan as one man."
And the children of the Kenite, Moses` brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.
17
And he said to him, "If now I have found favor in your sight, then make me a sign that it is you who speak with me.
And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
18
Do not depart from here, I pray you, until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you." And he said, "I will stay until you return."
Also Judah took Gaza with the border thereof, and Ashkelon with the border thereof, and Ekron with the border thereof.
19
And Gid'on went in and prepared a kid of the goats, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour; the meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and he brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.
And Jehovah was with Judah; and drove out [the inhabitants of] the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20
And the messenger of the Elohim said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And he did so.
And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken: and he drove out thence the three sons of Anak.
21
Then the messenger of YHWH put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up out of the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes; and the messenger of YHWH departed from his sight.
And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
22
And Gid'on saw that he was the messenger of YHWH; and Gid'on said, "Alas, Lord YHWH! Forasmuch as I have seen the messenger of YHWH face to face."
And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el; and Jehovah was with them.
23
And YHWH said to him, "Peace be to you; do not fear; you shall not die."
And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth-el. (Now the name of the city beforetime was Luz.)
24
Then Gid'on built an altar there to YHWH and called it YHWH-Shalom. Unto this day it is still in Ofrah of the Avi'ezrites.
And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.
25
And it came to pass that same night that YHWH said to him, "Take your father's bull, even the second bull, seven years old, and throw down the altar of Ba'al that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it;
And he showed them the entrance into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.
26
and build an altar to YHWH your Elohim on the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down."
And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.
27
Then Gid'on took ten men of his servants and did as YHWH had spoken to him; and it came to pass, because he feared his father's household and the men of the city too much to do it by day, that he did it by night.
And Manasseh did not drive out [the inhabitants of] Beth-shean and its towns, nor [of] Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
28
And the men of the city rose early in the morning, and behold, the altar of Ba'al was broken down, and the Asherah that was beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered up on the altar that had been built.
And it came to pass, when Israel was waxed strong, that they put the Canaanites to taskwork, and did not utterly drive them out.
29
And they said to one another, "Who has done this thing?" And when they inquired and searched, they said, "Gid'on the son of Yo'ash has done this thing."
And Ephraim drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
30
Then the men of the city said to Yo'ash, "Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Ba'al, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was beside it."
Zebulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to taskwork.
31
And Yo'ash said to all who stood against him, "Will you contend for Ba'al? Or will you save him? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is an elohim, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar."
Asher drove not out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;
32
Therefore on that day he called him Yerubba'al, saying, "Let Ba'al contend against him, because he has broken down his altar."
but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.
33
Then all Midyan and Amaleq and the children of the east gathered together; and they crossed over and encamped in the valley of Yizre'el.
Naphtali drove not out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to taskwork.
34
But the ruach of YHWH clothed Gid'on; and he blew the shofar, and Avi'ezer was called out after him.
And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country; for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley;
35
And he sent messengers throughout all Menasheh, and they too were called out after him; and he sent messengers to Asher, and to Zevulun, and to Naftali; and they came up to meet them.
but the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to taskwork.
36
And Gid'on said to the Elohim, "If you will save Yisra'el by my hand, as you have spoken,
And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
37
behold, I am placing a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Yisra'el by my hand, as you have spoken."
38
And it was so; for he rose early on the next day, and pressed the fleece, and wrung dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.
39
And Gid'on said to the Elohim, "Do not let your anger burn against me, and let me speak just this once; let me test, I pray you, just this once more with the fleece: let it now be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew."
40
And the Elohim did so that night; for it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.
Chapter 13

Judges 13 — The messenger of YHWH and the birth of Shimshon (Samson)

1
And the children of Yisra'el again did what was evil in the sight of YHWH; and YHWH gave them into the hand of the Pelishtim forty years.
And the angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you:
2
And there was a certain man of Tzor'ah, of the clan of the Danites, whose name was Manoach; and his wife was barren and had not borne.
and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this?
3
And the messenger of YHWH appeared to the woman and said to her, "Behold now, you are barren and have not borne; but you shall conceive and bear a son.
Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be [as thorns] in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
4
Now therefore beware, I pray you, and drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean.
And it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5
For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to Elohim from the womb; and he shall begin to save Yisra'el from the hand of the Pelishtim."
And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto Jehovah.
6
Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, "The man of the Elohim came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of the messenger of the Elohim, very fearsome; and I did not ask him where he was from, and he did not tell me his name.
Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
7
But he said to me, 'Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son; and now drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to Elohim from the womb to the day of his death.'"
And the people served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Jehovah that he had wrought for Israel.
8
Then Manoach entreated YHWH and said, "Oh, Lord, let the man of the Elohim whom you sent come again to us, and teach us what we shall do for the boy who is to be born."
And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.
9
And the Elohim listened to the voice of Manoach; and the messenger of the Elohim came again to the woman as she was sitting in the field; but Manoach her husband was not with her.
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.
10
And the woman hurried and ran and told her husband, and said to him, "Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me."
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, that knew not Jehovah, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel.
11
And Manoach arose and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, "Are you the man who spoke to the woman?" And he said, "I am."
And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim;
12
And Manoach said, "Now let your words come to pass. What shall be the ordering of the boy, and what shall be done for him?"
and they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked Jehovah to anger.
13
And the messenger of YHWH said to Manoach, "Of all that I said to the woman let her beware.
And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.
14
She shall not eat of anything that comes from the vine, nor drink wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean; all that I commanded her let her keep."
And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that despoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
15
And Manoach said to the messenger of YHWH, "Let us detain you, I pray you, and let us prepare a kid of the goats for you."
Whithersoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had spoken, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed.
16
And the messenger of YHWH said to Manoach, "Though you detain me, I will not eat of your bread; but if you will prepare a burnt-offering, offer it to YHWH." For Manoach did not know that he was the messenger of YHWH.
And Jehovah raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those that despoiled them.
17
And Manoach said to the messenger of YHWH, "What is your name, that when your word comes to pass we may honor you?"
And yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; [but] they did not so.
18
And the messenger of YHWH said to him, "Why is it that you ask after my name, seeing it is wonderful?"
And when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.
19
So Manoach took the kid of the goats with the meal-offering, and offered it up on the rock to YHWH; and he did wondrously, while Manoach and his wife looked on.
But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.
20
For it came to pass, when the flame went up from off the altar toward the skies, that the messenger of YHWH went up in the flame of the altar; and Manoach and his wife looked on, and they fell on their faces to the ground.
And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;
21
But the messenger of YHWH did not appear again to Manoach or to his wife. Then Manoach knew that he was the messenger of YHWH.
I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;
22
And Manoach said to his wife, "We shall surely die, because we have seen Elohim."
that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
23
But his wife said to him, "If YHWH had wished to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meal-offering from our hand, nor would he have shown us all these things, nor would he at this time have let us hear such things as these."
So Jehovah left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
24
And the woman bore a son and called his name Shimshon; and the boy grew, and YHWH blessed him.
25
And the ruach of YHWH began to move him in Machaneh-Dan, between Tzor'ah and Eshta'ol.
Editorial history

Review record. All two chapter files carry status: stable (v1.0.0) with a named human reviewer (zarazinsfuss), signed off on 2026-11-01 in the Former Prophets wave (FP1) of the canon-cited program. The editor report, the reviewer reports in the chapter files and the sign-off package (data-library/joshua-woh/wave-fp1-signoff-package.md) record every decision.

Selection. Part of the program to translate, as whole chapters, every biblical chapter that the three Raëlian canon books (The Book Which Tells the Truth, Extra-Terrestrials Took Me to Their Planet, Let's Welcome the Extra-Terrestrials) cite. With this release the program is complete: 87 chapters.

Conventions. As in the Kings volumes, proper names are transliterated from the Hebrew with "-ite" gentilics, and each chapter title gives the English form. Šāmayim is "skies" or "heaven(s)" by register; ḥērem is "devote(d) to destruction". The Masoretic text is kept throughout, with one ratified exception at 1 Samuel 6:18, where the Hebrew cannot be construed. The canon's readings appear only in notes headed "Wheel of Heaven reading (reception note, not a translation claim)".

Production. Drafted by Claude Opus 5.5 and taken through the Wheel of Heaven Translation Program pipeline (Translator → Editor → Reviewer → human sign-off). Central glossary 2.84.0–2.90.0; judges-woh overlay v1.0.0. Reference translation: ASV (1901). Methodology: Source-Text Translation.
