Part 1

The Arabic Hidden Words

1
He is the Glorious, the Most Glorious. This is that which was sent down from the omnipotent realm of glory, by the tongue of power and might, upon the prophets of old. And We have taken the gems of its meaning and clothed them in the garment of brevity, as a favour unto the learned, that they may fulfil the covenant of God and render up His trusts within their own souls, and that, through the essence of piety, they may be numbered in the realm of the spirit among them that have attained.

O Son of the Spirit! First of all sayings: possess a heart that is good, comely, and luminous, that thou mayest possess a dominion enduring, everlasting, from all eternity, ancient.
3
O Son of the Spirit! The best-beloved of all things in My sight is equity. Turn not away from it if thou desirest Me, and neglect it not, that I may confide in thee. By it thou shalt see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and know by thine own knowledge and not through the knowledge of any in the lands. Ponder this in thy heart: how it behoveth thee to be. Verily, equity is of My gift to thee and of My loving care for thee; keep it, then, before thine eyes.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ r-rūḥ, الرُّوحِ aḥabbu l-ašyāʾi أَحَبُّ ʿindiya الأَشْيَاءِ l-inṣāf. عِنْدِي الإنْصافُ. tarġab لَا ʿanhu تَرْغَبْ in عَنْهُ takun إِنْ ilayya تَكُنْ rāġiban إِلَيَّ wa-lā راغِبًا taġfal وَلَا minhu تَغْفَلْ li-takūna مِنْهُ لِتَكُونَ amīnan, لِي wa-anta أَمِينًا tuwaffaqu وَأَنْتَ bi-ḏālika تُوَفَّقُ an بِذلِكَ tušāhida أَنْ l-ašyāʾa تُشَاهِدَ bi-ʿaynika الأَشْياءَ بِعَيْنِكَ bi-ʿayni لا l-ʿibādi بِعَيْنِ wa-taʿrifahā العِبادِ bi-maʿrifatika وَتَعْرِفَها بِمَعْرِفَتِكَ bi-maʿrifati لا aḥadin بِمَعْرِفَةِ fi أَحَدٍ l-bilād.
4
O Son of Man! In the eternity of My essence and the everlastingness of My being I knew My love for thee; therefore I created thee. Upon thee I have cast My image, and to thee I have revealed My beauty.
5
O Son of Man! I loved thy creation, therefore I created thee. Love Me, then, that I may make mention of thee, and in the spirit of life establish thee.
6
O Son of Being! Love Me, that I may love thee. If thou lovest Me not, I shall never love thee. Know this, O servant.
7
O Son of Being! Thy paradise is My love, and thy heaven is reunion with Me. Enter therein and tarry not. This is what hath been ordained for thee in Our most exalted kingdom and Our most sublime realm of omnipotence.
8
O Son of Mortal Man! If thou lovest My self, turn away from thine own; and if thou seekest My good pleasure, close thine eyes to thine own. Thus wilt thou be effaced in Me, and I everlasting in thee.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-bašar, البَشَرِ in tuḥibba إِنْ nafsī تُحِبَّ fa-aʿriḍ نَفْسي ʿan فَأَعْرِضْ nafsika, عَنْ wa-in نَفْسِكَ، turid وَإِنْ riḍāʾī تُرِدْ fa-aġmiḍ رِضائِي ʿan فَأَغْمِضْ riḍāʾika, عَنْ li-takūna رِضائِكَ، fiyya لِتَكُونَ fāniyan فِيَّ wa-akūna فانِيًا fīka وَأَكُونَ bāqiyan.
9
O Son of the Spirit! No rest is ordained for thee save by renouncing thyself and turning unto Me; for it behoveth thee that thy glorying be in My name and not thine own, and that thy reliance be upon My face and not upon thine; for I alone desire to be loved above all things.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ r-rūḥ, الرُّوحِ quddira ما laka قُدِّرَ r-rāḥatu لَكَ illā الرَّاحَةُ bi-iʿrāḍika إِلاَّ ʿan بِإِعْراضِكَ nafsika عَنْ wa-iqbālika نَفْسِكَ bi-nafsī, وَإِقْبالِكَ li-annahu بِنَفْسي، yanbaġī لأَنَّهُ an يَنْبَغي yakūna أَنْ ftiḵāruka يَكُونَ bi-smī افْتِخارُكَ بِاسْمِي bi-smika, لَا wa-ttikāluka بِاسْمِكَ، ʿalā وَاتِّكالُكَ wajhī عَلى وَجْهِي ʿalā لا wajhika, عَلَى li-annī وَجْهِكَ waḥdī لأَنِّي uḥibbu وَحْدِي an أُحِبُّ akūna أَنْ maḥbūban أَكُونَ fawqa مَحْبوباً kulli فَوْقَ šayʾ.
10
O Son of Being! My love is My fortress; he that entereth therein is saved and secure, and he that turneth away goeth astray and perisheth.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-wujūd, الوُجُودِ ḥubbī ḥiṣnī, حُبِّي man حِصْني daḵala مَنْ fīhi دَخَلَ najā فِيهِ wa-amina, نَجا wa-man وَأَمِنَ aʿraḍa وَمَنْ ġawā أَعْرَضَ wa-halaka.
11
O Son of Utterance! Thou art My fortress; enter therein, that thou mayest abide in safety. My love is within thee; know it from thine own self, that thou mayest find Me near.
12
O Son of Being! Thou art My lamp-niche, and My lamp is within thee. Draw thy light from it and seek none other than Me; for I have created thee rich and made My bounty upon thee abundant.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-wujūd, الوُجُودِ miškātī anta مِشْكاتِي wa-miṣbāḥī أَنْتَ fīka; وَمِصْباحِي fa-stanir فِيْكَ؛ bihi فَاسْتَنِرْ wa-lā بِهِ tafḥaṣ وَلا ʿan تَفْحَصْ ġayrī, عَنْ li-annī غَيْري، ḵalaqtuka لأَنِّي ġaniyyan خَلَقْتُكَ wa-jaʿaltu غَنِيَّاً n-niʿmata وَجَعَلْتُ ʿalayka النِّعْمَةَ bāliġatan.
13
O Son of Being! I made thee with the hands of might and created thee with the fingers of power, and within thee I laid the essence of My light. Be content with it, above all things; for My work is perfect and My decree is inexorable. Doubt it not, nor be of them that waver concerning it.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-wujūd, الوُجُودِ ṣanaʿtuka bi-ayādi صَنَعْتُكَ l-quwwati بِأَيادِي wa-ḵalaqtuka الْقُوَّةِ bi-anāmili وَخَلَقْتُكَ l-qudrati, بِأَنامِلِ wa-awdaʿtu الْقُدْرَةِ، fīka وَأَوْدَعْتُ jawhara فِيْكَ nūrī جَوْهَرَ fa-staġni نُوري bihi فَاسْتَغْنِ ʿan بِهِ kulli عَنْ šayʾin, كُلِّ li-anna شَيءٍ، ṣunʿī لأَنَّ kāmilun صُنْعي wa-ḥukmī كامِلٌ nāfiḏun وَحُكْمي نافِذٌ tašukka لا fīhi تَشُكَّ wa-lā فِيهِ takun وَلَا fīhi تَكُنْ murīban.
14
O Son of the Spirit! I created thee rich — how is it thou makest thyself poor? I fashioned thee mighty — how is it thou abasest thyself? Out of the essence of knowledge I brought thee forth — why seekest thou knowledge of any beside Me? Out of the clay of love I kneaded thee — how is it thou busiest thyself with another? Turn thy gaze upon thyself, that thou mayest find Me within thee, standing, mighty, all-powerful, self-subsisting.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ r-rūḥ, الرُّوحِ ḵalaqtuka ġaniyyan خَلَقْتُكَ kayfa غَنِيًّا taftaqiru, كَيْفَ wa-ṣanaʿtuka تَفْتَقِرُ، ʿazīzan وَصَنَعْتُكَ bima عَزِيزًا tastaḏillu, بِمَ wa-min تَسْتَذِلُّ، jawhari وَمِنْ l-ʿilmi جَوْهَرِ aẓhartuka العِلْمِ lima أَظْهَرْتُكَ tastaʿlimu لِمَ ʿan تَسْتَعْلِمُ dūnī, عَنْ wa-min دُونِي، ṭīni وَمِنْ l-ḥubbi طينِ ʿajantuka الْحُبِّ kayfa عَجَنْتُكَ taštaġilu كَيْفَ bi-ġayrī; تَشْتَغِلُ fa-arjiʿi بِغَيْري؛ l-baṣara فَأَرْجِعِ ilayka الْبَصَرَ li-tajidanī إِلَيْكَ fīka لِتَجِدَني qāʾiman فِيكَ qādiran قائِمًا muqtadiran قادِرًا qayyūman.
15
O Son of Man! Thou art My dominion, and My dominion perisheth not — why dreadest thou thy perishing? Thou art My light, and My light is not quenched — why art thou troubled at thine extinction? Thou art My glory, and My glory fadeth not; thou art My robe, and My robe weareth not away. Abide, then, in thy love for Me, that thou mayest find Me in the highest horizon.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-insān, الإِنْسانِ anta mulkī أَنْتَ wa-mulkī مُلْكِي وَمُلْكِي yafnā لا kayfa يَفْنى taḵāfu كَيْفَ min تَخافُ fanāʾika, مِنْ wa-anta فَنائِكَ، nūrī وَأَنْتَ wa-nūrī نُوري وَنُوري yuṭfā لا kayfa يُطْفى taḍṭaribu كَيْفَ min تَضْطَرِبُ iṭfāʾika, مِنْ wa-anta إِطْفائِكَ، bahāʾī وَأَنْتَ wa-bahāʾī بَهائِي وَبَهائِي yuġšā, لا wa-anta يُغْشى، qamīṣī وَأَنْتَ wa-qamīṣī قَمِيصي وَقَميصِي yablā, لَا fa-stariḥ يَبْلَى، فَاسْتَرِح ḥubbika فِي iyyāya حُبِّكَ li-kay إِيَّايَ tajidanī لِكَيْ fi تَجِدَنِي l-ufuqi فِي l-aʿlā.
16
O Son of Utterance! Turn thy face toward My face and turn away from all besides Me; for My sovereignty endureth and passeth never away, and My dominion abideth and is never overthrown. Shouldst thou seek any other than Me, thou wouldst not find him, though thou shouldst search through all being, everlastingly, eternally.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-bayān, البَيان wajjih bi-wajhī وَجِّهْ wa-aʿriḍ بِوَجْهِي ʿan وَأَعْرِضْ ġayrī, عَنْ li-anna غَيْرِي، sulṭānī لأَنَّ bāqin سُلْطانِي باقٍ yazūlu لا abadan يَزُولُ wa-mulkī أَبَدًا dāʾimun وَمُلكِي دائِمٌ yaḥūlu لا abadan. يَحُولُ wa-in أَبَدًا. taṭlub وَإِنْ siwāʾī تَطْلُبْ lan سِوائِي tajida لَنْ law تَجِدَ tafḥaṣu لَوْ fi تَفْحَصُ l-wujūdi فِي sarmadan الوُجُودِ azalan.
17
O Son of Light! Forget all save Me, and take intimacy with My spirit. This is of the essence of My Cause; turn, then, unto it.
18
O Son of Man! Let Me suffice thee in place of all else, and seek no helper besides Me; for naught but Me shall ever suffice thee.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-insān, الإِنْسانِ ikfi bi-nafsī اكْفِ ʿan بِنَفْسِي dūnī عَنْ wa-lā دُونِي taṭlub وَلَا muʿīnan تَطْلُبْ siwāʾī, مُعِينًا li-anna سِوائِي، لأَنَّ dūnī ما lan دُونِي yakfiyaka لَنْ abadan.
19
O Son of the Spirit! Ask not of Me that which We desire not for thee; then be content with what We have decreed for thy countenance; for that is what profiteth thee, if therewith thou be content.
20
O Son of the Supreme Vision! I deposited within thee a spirit from Me, that thou mightest be a lover unto Me. Why hast thou forsaken Me and sought a beloved other than Me?
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-manẓari المَنْظَرِ l-aʿlā, الأَعْلى awdaʿtu fīka أَوْدَعْتُ rūḥan فِيكَ minnī رُوحًا li-takūna مِنِّي ḥabīban لِتَكُونَ lī; حَبِيبًا lima لِي؛ taraktanī لِمَ wa-ṭalabta تَرَكْتَنِي maḥbūban وَطَلَبْتَ siwāʾī.
21
O Son of the Spirit! My right over thee is great and not to be forgotten; My grace toward thee is abundant and not to be veiled; My love within thee is present and not to be concealed; My light unto thee is manifest and not to be hidden.
22
O Son of Mortal Man! From the tree of most-glorious splendour I have ordained for thee the purest of fruits. How is it thou hast turned away from it and contented thyself with that which is baser? Return, then, unto that which is better for thee in the highest horizon.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-bašar, البَشَرِ qaddartu laka قَدَّرْتُ mina لَكَ š-šajari مِنَ l-abhā الشَّجَرِ l-fawākiha الأَبْهَى l-aṣfā, الْفَواكِهَ kayfa الأَصْفى، aʿraḍta كَيْفَ ʿanhu أَعْرَضْتَ wa-raḍīta عَنْهُ bi-llaḏī وَرَضِيتَ huwa بِالَّذِي adnā, هُوَ fa-rjiʿ أَدْنَى، ilā فارْجِعْ إِلَى huwa مَا ḵayrun هُوَ laka خَيْرٌ fi لَكَ l-ufuqi فِي l-aʿlā.

25
O Son of Man! Overstep not thy bounds, and lay not claim to that which beseemeth thee not. Prostrate thyself before the countenance of thy Lord, the Lord of might and power.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-insān, الإِنْسانِ tataʿadda لَا ʿan تَتَعَدَّ ḥaddika عَنْ wa-lā حَدِّكَ taddaʿi وَلا تَدَّعِ مَا yanbaġī لَا li-nafsika, يَنْبَغِي sjud لِنَفْسِكَ، li-ṭalʿati اسْجُدْ rabbika لِطَلْعَةِ ḏi رَبِّكَ l-qudrati ذِي wa-l-iqtidāri.
26
O Son of the Spirit! Vaunt not thyself over the poor by the pride of thyself; for I walk before him, and I behold thee in thine evil plight, and I condemn thee for evermore.

27
O Son of Being! How is it thou hast forgotten thine own faults and busied thyself with the faults of My servants? Whoso doeth so, upon him is a curse from Me.
بِعُيُوبِ man عِبادِي. kāna مَنْ ʿalā كانَ ḏālika عَلى fa-ʿalayhi ذلِكَ laʿnatun فَعَلَيْهِ minnī.
28
O Son of Man! Breathe not the sin of any so long as thou art thyself a sinner. Shouldst thou do otherwise, accursed art thou, and to this I bear witness.
﴿ يَا bna ابْنَ l-insān, الإِنْسانِ tanaffas لَا bi-ḵaṭaʾi تَنَفَّسْ aḥadin بِخَطَأِ أَحَدٍ dumta مَا ḵāṭiʾan, دُمْتَ wa-in خاطِئًا، tafʿal وَإِنْ bi-ġayri تَفْعَلْ ḏālika بِغَيْرِ malʿūnun ذَلِكَ anta, مَلْعُونٌ wa-anā أَنْتَ، šāhidun وَأَنَا bi-ḏālika.

O Son of Man! Deny not My servant should he ask aught of thee, for his face is My face; be then abashed before Me.

O Son of Man! Thou desirest gold, and I desire thy detachment from it. Thou hast deemed thy wealth to lie in possessing it, and I have known thy wealth to lie in thy sanctification from it. By My life! This is My knowledge, and that is thy fancy; how can My way accord with thine?

O Son of Man! My grandeur is My gift unto thee, and My majesty is My mercy upon thee. That which beseemeth My self none can grasp, nor can any soul encompass it. I have treasured it up in the storehouses of My mystery and the coffers of My Cause, as a tenderness unto My servants and a mercy unto My creatures.

O Sons of Men! Know ye wherefore We created you all from one same dust? That none should exalt himself above another. Ponder at all times how ye were created. Since We created you from one same substance, it behoveth you to be as one soul — to walk with one foot, to eat from one mouth, and to dwell in one land — that from your inmost beings and your works and your deeds the signs of oneness and the essences of detachment may be made manifest. This is My counsel unto you, O concourse of light: heed it, that ye may gather the fruits of holiness from the tree of impregnable glory.

The Persian Hidden Words

In the name of the Almighty Speaker.
﴿ ba-nām-i بنام gūyanda-yi گوينده tavānā. توانا

O ye that possess wit and ear! The first tiding of the Friend is this: O spiritual nightingale, take not thine abode save in the rose-bower of inner meanings; and O hoopoe of the Solomon of love, seek no homeland save in the Sheba of the Beloved; and O phoenix of eternity, choose no dwelling-place save upon the Qáf of faithfulness. This is thy station. Wouldst thou wing thy flight with the soul unto the Placeless, then soar, and set thy course toward thine own station freely.

O Son of the Spirit! Every bird hath its gaze upon its nest, and every nightingale its aim in the beauty of the rose — save the birds of the hearts of [My] servants, who, content with perishable dust, have strayed far from the abiding nest, and, having turned toward the mires of remoteness, have been deprived of the roses of nearness. What wonder and regret, what sorrow and pity, that for a single ewer[-full] they have passed by the waves of the ocean of the All-Highest Companion, and remained far from the Most Glorious Horizon.

O Friend! In the garden of thy heart plant naught but the rose of love, and from the nightingale of affection and longing loose not thy hold. Prize the companionship of the righteous, and from fellowship with the wicked withdraw both hand and heart.

O Son of Equity! What lover is there who would take his abode anywhere save in the homeland of the beloved, and what seeker who would seek rest without the sought-for? To the true lover, life lieth in reunion and death in separation. Their breasts are void of patience and their hearts hallowed above forbearance; they pass beyond a hundred thousand lives and hasten to the quarter of the Beloved.
﴿ ay ای pisar-i پسر inṣāf! انصاف kudām ʿāshiq کدام ki عاشق juz كه dar جز vaṭan-i در maʿshūq وطن maḥall معشوق gīrad محلّ va گيرد kudām و ṭālib کدام ki طالب که maṭlūb بی rāḥat مطلوب jūyad? راحت ʿāshiq-i جويد ṣādiq ؟ موت ṣadr-ishān در az فراق ṣabr * khālī صدرشان va از qulūb-ishān صبر az خالی iṣṭibār و muqaddas; قلوبشان az از ṣad اصطبار hazār مقدّس jān از dar-guẕarand صد va هزار bi-kūy-i جان jānān درگذرند shitāband.

O Son of Dust! Verily I say: the most heedless of servants is he that wrangleth in words and seeketh to exalt himself above his brother. Say: O brethren! Adorn yourselves with deeds, not with words.

O Sons of Earth! Know ye truly: a heart wherein there yet lingereth the least trace of envy shall never enter My everlasting realm of omnipotence, nor breathe the fragrances of holiness from the kingdom of My sanctity.

O Son of Love! Between thee and the inaccessible height of nearness and the Lote-Tree of the loftiness of love there lieth but a single step. Take the first step, and with the other tread upon the realm of pre-eternity, and enter the pavilion of everlastingness. Hearken, then, unto that which hath descended from the Pen of glory.

Be blind — that is, to the beholding of any beauty save Mine; be deaf — that is, to the hearing of any word save Mine; be ignorant — that is, of all knowledge save Mine; that with pure eye and goodly heart and refined ear thou mayest enter the court of My holiness.

O ye that dwell in the highest Paradise! Announce unto them that are assured: In the hallowed space of the nearness of Riḍván a new garden hath appeared, round which circle all the dwellers of the realms on high and the temples of the sublime paradise of eternity. Strive, then, to attain that station, and to seek out the realities of the mysteries of love from its anemones, and to gather all the consummate wisdoms of the Divine Oneness from its abiding fruits. O My Friends! Have ye forgotten that true and radiant morn when, in the shade of the tree of companionship planted in the most great paradise, ye were all gathered before Me in that blessed and hallowed space? Three goodly words I spoke, and ye heard them all and were struck senseless; and those words were these: O Friends! Prefer not your own good-pleasure to My good-pleasure, and desire never that which I have not desired for you, and approach Me not with dead hearts defiled with hopes and cravings. O ye that lie as dead upon the couch of heedlessness! Ages have passed, and ye have brought your precious lives unto their end, yet not one pure breath hath ascended from you unto Our holy court. Ye are sunk in the seas of idolatry, yet ye let the word of the Divine Unity run upon your tongues. Ye have deemed My detested one your beloved, and have taken My enemy for your friend; and upon My earth ye walk in all gladness and joy, heedless that My earth is weary of you and that all things thereon flee from you. Wert thou but to open thine eye a little, thou wouldst reckon a hundred thousand sorrows sweeter than this joy, and wouldst count annihilation better than this life.

O Son of Bounty! Out of the wastes of nothingness, with the clay of My command, I brought thee forth into the world of dominion, and appointed for thy training every atom of existence and the realities of all created things. Thus, ere thou camest forth from thy mother's womb, I ordained for thee two founts of gleaming milk, appointed eyes to watch over thee, and instilled the love of thee into [men's] hearts. Out of sheer bounty I nurtured thee beneath the shadow of My mercy, and guarded thee by the essence of My grace and lovingkindness. And My purpose in all this was that thou mightest enter Our everlasting realm of omnipotence and become worthy of Our unseen gifts. Yet thou, heedless, when thou didst come to ripeness, didst neglect all My bounties and busy thyself with thine own vain fancy, so that thou didst utterly forget, and, turning from the door of the Friend, didst find thy seat and take up thine abode within the palace of the enemy.

O Companion of the Throne! Hear no evil, and see no evil; abase not thyself, neither wail and lament. That is: speak no evil, that thou mayest hear none; and magnify not the faults of others, that thine own faults may not appear great; and desire not the abasement of any soul, that thine own abasement be not laid bare. Live, then, with a pure heart, a stainless mind, a sanctified breast, and an unsullied thought, throughout the days of thy life — which are reckoned less than a fleeting moment — that, freed from this mortal frame, thou mayest wing thy way unto the paradise of inner meanings and take thine abode in the everlasting kingdom.

Woe, woe, O ye lovers of carnal desire! Like lightning ye have passed the spiritual Beloved by, and have set your hearts fast upon a satanic fancy. Ye bow down before an idol of imagination and have named it Truth; ye gaze upon a thorn and have called it a rose. Not one free breath hath risen from you, nor hath the breeze of detachment blown from the gardens of your hearts. The loving counsels of the Well-Beloved ye have flung to the winds and effaced from the tablet of your hearts; and, like the beasts of the field, ye graze and take your fill in the meadow of lust and craving.

O Brethren of the Path! Wherefore have ye grown heedless of the remembrance of the Loved One, and remained afar from His presence? The very Essence of Beauty is seated upon the throne of majesty within the peerless pavilion, while ye are busied with your own vain contentions. O Sons of Heedlessness and Passion! Ye have let My enemy into My house and driven My friend from you, for ye have lodged the love of another than Me within your hearts. Hearken to the words of the Friend, and turn toward His paradise. Friends in the world's eyes love one another for their own advantage; but the true Friend hath loved and doth love you for your own sakes — nay, for the sake of your guidance He hath borne afflictions beyond all reckoning. Be not faithless to such a Friend; hasten, rather, unto His street. This is the sun of the word of truth and faithfulness, that hath dawned from the horizon of the finger of the Lord of Names. O Sons of Adam! Goodly words and pure and holy deeds ascend unto the heaven of the glory of the Divine Oneness. Strive that your deeds may be cleansed from the dust of hypocrisy and the murkiness of self and passion, and may find favour at the court of glory; for erelong the assayers of mankind shall, in the sacred presence of the Adored One, accept naught but purest piety and receive nothing but the deed unsullied. This is the sun of wisdom and inner meaning that hath shone from the horizon of the mouth of the divine Will. Blessed are they that turn thereunto!

O Son of Joy! How fair is the realm of being, if thou wouldst but enter it! And how goodly is the carpet of everlastingness, if thou wouldst but stride beyond the perishing dominion! Shouldst thou attain these stations, thou wouldst be freed from nothingness and annihilation, from tribulation and error.

Call ye to mind that covenant ye entered into with Me upon Mount Párán, situate within the blessed precinct of Time, wherein I took to witness the Concourse on high and the companions of the Midian of eternity; yet now I find none faithful unto that covenant. Verily, pride and rebellion have so effaced it from your hearts that no trace thereof remaineth. Yet, knowing this, I have been patient and disclosed it not.

O Son of My Handmaid! Guidance hath ever been given by words, but now it is given by deeds. That is: all holy deeds must appear from the temple of man; for in words all have their share, but pure and holy deeds are the peculiar treasure of Our loved ones. Strive, then, with heart and soul, to be distinguished, by your deeds, from all mankind. Thus do We counsel you in a holy and shining Tablet.

O Son of Equity! In the night season the Beauty of the immortal Being repaired from the emerald height of faithfulness unto the Lote-Tree of the Utmost Boundary, and wept with such a weeping that all the Concourse on high and the cherubim wailed at His lamenting. Whereupon there was inquired the cause of the wailing and lamentation, and He made answer: According to the [divine] command I waited, expectant, upon the height of faithfulness, yet caught not the fragrance of faithfulness from the dwellers of the earth; and when I made to return, lo, I beheld certain holy doves sore afflicted in the talons of the dogs of earth. Thereupon the Maid of heaven hastened forth, unveiled and unscreened, from her mystic mansion, and asked their names; and all were named save one, and when she pressed, the first letter of the name flowed from the tongue, whereupon the dwellers of the celestial chambers rushed forth from their glorious habitations; and when it reached the second letter, they all fell upon the dust. In that moment a voice was heard from the inmost shrine of nearness: "Thus far and no farther." Verily We bear witness unto that which they wrought, and are even now committing.

The peerless bride of inner meanings, that lay concealed and hidden behind the veils of utterance, hath, through divine grace and heavenly favours, been made manifest and revealed, even as the radiant beam of the Beloved's beauty. I bear witness, O friends, that the bounty is complete, the proof consummate, the demonstration made plain, and the testimony established. It now remaineth to be seen what your own endeavour, in the stages of detachment, will make manifest. Thus is the bounty consummated upon you and upon them that are in the heavens and on the earth. And praise be to God, the Lord of all worlds.
