1 Samuel

Wheel of Heaven Translation

The canon-cited chapters of 1 Samuel: YHWH calls Shemu'el (Samuel), the ark among the Pelishtim (Philistines), and David and Golyat (Goliath)

Direct

Established or uncontested across mainstream sources, or a direct description of the project itself.

The Method

1 Samuel (Hebrew Shemu'el) tells of the last judge, the first king and the rise of David. This translation covers the four chapters that the Raëlian canon cites:

  • 1 Samuel 3: YHWH calls Shemu'el (Samuel) in the night
  • 1 Samuel 5: the ark of the Elohim among the Pelishtim (Philistines), Dagon fallen before it, and the plague
  • 1 Samuel 6: the ark returned to Beit-Shemesh (Beth-shemesh)
  • 1 Samuel 17: David and Golyat (Goliath)

At 6:18 the line reads "the great stone" with some Hebrew manuscripts and the ancient versions: the Masoretic "meadow" cannot agree with the words around it. It is the one departure from the Masoretic text in these volumes, and the note sets out the evidence. Verses with a note end in a bracketed marker [ ]; select it to open the note.

Chapter 3

1 Samuel 3 — YHWH calls Shemu'el (Samuel)

1
And the boy Shemu'el was ministering to YHWH before Eli. And the word of YHWH was rare in those days; there was no widespread vision.
Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of the hill-country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite:
2
And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was lying down in his place — now his eyes had begun to grow dim, so that he could not see —
and he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
3
and the lamp of Elohim had not yet gone out, and Shemu'el was lying down in the temple of YHWH, where the ark of Elohim was,
And this man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice unto Jehovah of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests unto Jehovah, were there.
4
that YHWH called Shemu'el; and he said, "Here am I."
And when the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
5
And he ran to Eli and said, "Here am I, for you called me." And he said, "I did not call; lie down again." And he went and lay down.
but unto Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but Jehovah had shut up her womb.
6
And YHWH called yet again, "Shemu'el!" And Shemu'el arose and went to Eli and said, "Here am I, for you called me." And he said, "I did not call, my son; lie down again."
And her rival provoked her sore, to make her fret, because Jehovah had shut up her womb.
7
Now Shemu'el did not yet know YHWH, and the word of YHWH had not yet been revealed to him.
And [as] he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of Jehovah, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
8
And YHWH called Shemu'el again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, "Here am I, for you called me." And Eli perceived that YHWH was calling the boy.
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
9
Therefore Eli said to Shemu'el, "Go, lie down; and it shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, 'Speak, YHWH, for your servant is listening.'" So Shemu'el went and lay down in his place.
So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest was sitting upon his seat by the door-post of the temple of Jehovah.
10
And YHWH came and stood, and called as at the other times, "Shemu'el, Shemu'el!" Then Shemu'el said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto Jehovah, and wept sore.
11
And YHWH said to Shemu'el, "Behold, I am about to do a thing in Yisra'el at which both ears of everyone who hears it shall tingle.
And she vowed a vow, and said, O Jehovah of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thy handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thy handmaid, but wilt give unto thy handmaid a man-child, then I will give him unto Jehovah all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
12
On that day I will carry out against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end.
And it came to pass, as she continued praying before Jehovah, that Eli marked her mouth.
13
For I have told him that I am judging his house forever for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons were bringing a curse on themselves, and he did not restrain them.
Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
14
And therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of the house of Eli shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or meal-offering forever."
And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.
15
And Shemu'el lay until the morning; and he opened the doors of the house of YHWH. And Shemu'el was afraid to tell Eli the vision.
And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Jehovah.
16
Then Eli called Shemu'el and said, "Shemu'el, my son." And he said, "Here am I."
Count not thy handmaid for a wicked woman; for out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation have I spoken hitherto.
17
And he said, "What is the word that he spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. So may Elohim do to you, and more also, if you hide from me a word of all the word that he spoke to you."
Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace; and the God of Israel grant thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
18
So Shemu'el told him all the words and hid nothing from him. And he said, "It is YHWH; let him do what is good in his eyes."
And she said, Let thy handmaid find favor in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat; and her countenance was no more [sad].
19
And Shemu'el grew, and YHWH was with him, and let none of his words fall to the ground.
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before Jehovah, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Jehovah remembered her.
20
And all Yisra'el from Dan to Be'er Sheva knew that Shemu'el was established as a prophet of YHWH.
And it came to pass, when the time was come about, that Hannah conceived, and bare a son; and she called his name Samuel, [saying], Because I have asked him of Jehovah.
21
And YHWH appeared again in Shiloh, for YHWH revealed himself to Shemu'el in Shiloh by the word of YHWH.
And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto Jehovah the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
Chapter 5

1 Samuel 5 — The ark of the Elohim among the Pelishtim (Philistines)

1
Now the Pelishtim had taken the ark of the Elohim, and they brought it from Even-Ha'ezer to Ashdod.
And Hannah prayed, and said: My heart exulteth in Jehovah; My horn is exalted in Jehovah; My mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; Because I rejoice in thy salvation.
2
And the Pelishtim took the ark of the Elohim and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it beside Dagon.
There is none holy as Jehovah; For there is none besides thee, Neither is there any rock like our God.
3
And when the Ashdodites rose early on the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of YHWH. And they took Dagon and set him back in his place.
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; Let not arrogancy come out of your mouth; For Jehovah is a God of knowledge, And by him actions are weighed.
4
And when they rose early in the morning on the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of YHWH; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold; only Dagon was left to him.
The bows of the mighty men are broken; And they that stumbled are girded with strength.
5
Therefore the priests of Dagon, and all who come into the house of Dagon, do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, unto this day.
They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; And they that were hungry have ceased [to hunger]: Yea, the barren hath borne seven; And she that hath many children languisheth.
6
And the hand of YHWH was heavy on the Ashdodites, and he devastated them and struck them with tumors, Ashdod and its territory.
Jehovah killeth, and maketh alive: He bringeth down to Sheol, and bringeth up.
7
And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, "The ark of the Elohim of Yisra'el shall not remain with us, for his hand is severe on us and on Dagon our elohim."
Jehovah maketh poor, and maketh rich: He bringeth low, he also lifteth up.
8
So they sent and gathered all the lords of the Pelishtim to them, and said, "What shall we do with the ark of the Elohim of Yisra'el?" And they said, "Let the ark of the Elohim of Yisra'el be carried around to Gat." And they carried the ark of the Elohim of Yisra'el around.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, He lifteth up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, And inherit the throne of glory: For the pillars of the earth are Jehovah`s, And he hath set the world upon them.
9
And it came to pass, after they had carried it around, that the hand of YHWH was against the city with a very great panic; and he struck the men of the city, both small and great, and tumors broke out on them.
He will keep the feet of his holy ones; But the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness; For by strength shall no man prevail.
10
So they sent the ark of the Elohim to Eqron. And it came to pass, as the ark of the Elohim came to Eqron, that the Eqronites cried out, saying, "They have carried around to me the ark of the Elohim of Yisra'el, to kill me and my people."
They that strive with Jehovah shall be broken to pieces; Against them will he thunder in heaven: Jehovah will judge the ends of the earth; And he will give strength unto his king, And exalt the horn of his anointed.
11
So they sent and gathered all the lords of the Pelishtim, and they said, "Send away the ark of the Elohim of Yisra'el, and let it return to its own place, that it may not kill me and my people." For there was a deadly panic throughout all the city; the hand of the Elohim was very heavy there.
And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto Jehovah before Eli the priest.
12
And the men who did not die were struck with the tumors; and the cry of the city went up to the heavens.
Now the sons of Eli were base men; they knew not Jehovah.
Chapter 6

1 Samuel 6 — The ark returned from the Pelishtim (Philistines) to Beit-Shemesh (Beth-shemesh)

1
And the ark of YHWH was in the territory of the Pelishtim seven months.
And the child Samuel ministered unto Jehovah before Eli. And the word of Jehovah was precious in those days; there was no frequent vision.
2
And the Pelishtim called for the priests and the diviners, saying, "What shall we do with the ark of YHWH? Tell us with what we shall send it to its place."
And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place (now his eyes had begun to wax dim, so that he could not see),
3
And they said, "If you send away the ark of the Elohim of Yisra'el, do not send it empty; but by all means return to him a guilt-offering; then you shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you."
and the lamp of God was not yet gone out, and Samuel was laid down [to sleep], in the temple of Jehovah, where the ark of God was;
4
And they said, "What is the guilt-offering which we shall return to him?" And they said, "Five golden tumors and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Pelishtim; for one plague was on all of them and on your lords.
that Jehovah called Samuel; and he said, Here am I.
5
And you shall make images of your tumors and images of your mice that ravage the land, and you shall give glory to the Elohim of Yisra'el; perhaps he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your elohim, and from off your land.
And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
6
Why then should you harden your hearts, as Mitzrayim and Par'oh hardened their hearts? When he had made sport of them, did they not let them go, and they departed?
And Jehovah called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
7
Now therefore take and prepare a new cart, and two milk cows on which there has come no yoke, and tie the cows to the cart, and bring their calves home, away from them.
Now Samuel did not yet know Jehovah, neither was the word of Jehovah yet revealed unto him.
8
And take the ark of YHWH and lay it on the cart; and put the objects of gold which you return to him as a guilt-offering in a coffer beside it; and send it away, that it may go.
And Jehovah called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And Eli perceived that Jehovah had called the child.
9
And watch: if it goes up by the way of its own territory to Beit-Shemesh, then it is he who has done us this great evil; but if not, then we shall know that it was not his hand that struck us; it was a chance that happened to us."
Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Jehovah; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10
And the men did so, and took two milk cows and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home.
And Jehovah came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel said, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
11
And they put the ark of YHWH on the cart, and the coffer, and the golden mice, and the images of their tumors.
And Jehovah said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.
12
And the cows went straight on the way, on the way to Beit-Shemesh; they went along one highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right or to the left; and the lords of the Pelishtim went after them as far as the border of Beit-Shemesh.
In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from the beginning even unto the end.
13
And the people of Beit-Shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.
For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons did bring a curse upon themselves, and he restrained them not.
14
And the cart came into the field of Yehoshua the Beit-Shimshite, and stood there; and a great stone was there; and they split the wood of the cart and offered up the cows as a burnt-offering to YHWH.
And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli`s house shall not be expiated with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
15
And the Levites took down the ark of YHWH, and the coffer that was with it, in which were the objects of gold, and put them on the great stone; and the men of Beit-Shemesh offered burnt-offerings and sacrificed sacrifices on that day to YHWH.
And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of Jehovah. And Samuel feared to show Eli the vision.
16
And when the five lords of the Pelishtim had seen it, they returned to Eqron that day.
Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he said, Here am I.
17
And these are the golden tumors which the Pelishtim returned as a guilt-offering to YHWH: for Ashdod one, for Azzah one, for Ashqelon one, for Gat one, for Eqron one;
And he said, What is the thing that [Jehovah] hath spoken unto thee? I pray thee, hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide anything from me of all the things that he spake unto thee.
18
and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Pelishtim belonging to the five lords, both fortified city and country village, even unto the great stone on which they set down the ark of YHWH, which remains unto this day in the field of Yehoshua the Beit-Shimshite.
And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is Jehovah: let him do what seemeth him good.
19
And he struck some of the men of Beit-Shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of YHWH; he struck of the people seventy men, fifty thousand men; and the people mourned, because YHWH had struck the people with a great slaughter.
And Samuel grew, and Jehovah was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
20
And the men of Beit-Shemesh said, "Who is able to stand before YHWH, this holy Elohim? And to whom shall he go up from us?"
And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of Jehovah.
21
And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Qiryat-Ye'arim, saying, "The Pelishtim have brought back the ark of YHWH; come down and take it up to you."
And Jehovah appeared again in Shiloh; for Jehovah revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of Jehovah.
Chapter 17

1 Samuel 17 — David and Golyat (Goliath)

1
Now the Pelishtim gathered their armies for battle, and they were gathered at Sokhoh, which belongs to Yehudah, and encamped between Sokhoh and Azeqah, in Efes-Dammim.
And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.
2
And Sha'ul and the men of Yisra'el were gathered and encamped in the valley of Elah, and drew up the battle in array to meet the Pelishtim.
And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines; and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
3
And the Pelishtim stood on the mountain on the one side, and Yisra'el stood on the mountain on the other side; and the valley was between them.
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of Jehovah out of Shiloh unto us, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.
4
And there went out a champion from the camps of the Pelishtim, named Golyat, of Gat, whose height was six cubits and a span.
So the people sent to Shiloh; and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of hosts, who sitteth [above] the cherubim: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5
And he had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was clothed with a coat of scale mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze.
And when the ark of the covenant of Jehovah came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.
6
And he had greaves of bronze on his legs, and a javelin of bronze between his shoulders.
And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of Jehovah was come into the camp.
7
And the shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and the head of his spear weighed six hundred shekels of iron; and the shield-bearer went before him.
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.
8
And he stood and cried out to the armies of Yisra'el, and said to them, "Why have you come out to draw up the battle in array? Am I not the Pelishtite, and you servants of Sha'ul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all manner of plagues in the wilderness.
9
If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us."
Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.
10
And the Pelishtite said, "I defy the armies of Yisra'el this day; give me a man, that we may fight together."
And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man to his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11
And when Sha'ul and all Yisra'el heard these words of the Pelishtite, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
12
Now David was the son of that Efratite of Beit-Lechem in Yehudah, whose name was Yishai; and he had eight sons; and the man was old in the days of Sha'ul, advanced among men.
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
13
And the three eldest sons of Yishai had gone after Sha'ul to the battle; and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eli'av the firstborn, and next to him Avinadav, and the third Shammah.
And when he came, lo, Eli was sitting upon his seat by the wayside watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
14
And David was the youngest; and the three eldest followed Sha'ul.
And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man hasted, and came and told Eli.
15
Now David went back and forth from Sha'ul to tend his father's sheep at Beit-Lechem.
Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were set, so that he could not see.
16
And the Pelishtite drew near morning and evening, and took his stand forty days.
And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to-day out of the army. And he said, How went the matter, my son?
17
And Yishai said to David his son, "Take now for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers;
And he that brought the tidings answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
18
and bring these ten cheeses to the captain of the thousand, and see how your brothers fare, and take their pledge."
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that [Eli] feel from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19
Now Sha'ul and they and all the men of Yisra'el were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Pelishtim.
And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas` wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and brought forth; for her pains came upon her.
20
And David rose early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took up his load and went, as Yishai had commanded him; and he came to the place of the wagons as the army that was going out to the battle line was shouting the war cry.
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast brought forth a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
21
And Yisra'el and the Pelishtim drew up in battle array, army against army.
And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
22
And David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.
And she said, The glory is departed from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.
23
And as he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Pelishtite of Gat, Golyat by name, came up out of the ranks of the Pelishtim, and spoke according to the same words; and David heard them.
24
And all the men of Yisra'el, when they saw the man, fled from him and were greatly afraid.
25
And the men of Yisra'el said, "Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely to defy Yisra'el he has come up. And it shall be that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Yisra'el."
26
And David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, "What shall be done for the man who kills this Pelishtite and takes away the reproach from Yisra'el? For who is this uncircumcised Pelishtite, that he should defy the armies of the living Elohim?"
27
And the people answered him after this manner, saying, "So shall it be done for the man who kills him."
28
And Eli'av his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eli'av's anger burned against David, and he said, "Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart; for you have come down to see the battle."
29
And David said, "What have I done now? Is there not a cause?"
30
And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke after the same manner; and the people answered him again as before.
31
And when the words which David spoke were heard, they reported them before Sha'ul; and he sent for him.
32
And David said to Sha'ul, "Let no man's heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Pelishtite."
33
And Sha'ul said to David, "You are not able to go against this Pelishtite to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth."
34
And David said to Sha'ul, "Your servant was keeping sheep for his father; and when a lion came, or a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock,
35
I went out after it and struck it and delivered it out of its mouth; and when it rose against me, I caught it by its beard and struck it and killed it.
36
Your servant has struck both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Pelishtite shall be as one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living Elohim."
37
And David said, "YHWH who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, he will deliver me from the hand of this Pelishtite." And Sha'ul said to David, "Go, and YHWH shall be with you."
38
And Sha'ul clothed David with his garments, and he put a helmet of bronze on his head, and he clothed him with a coat of mail.
39
And David girded his sword over his garments, and he tried to go, for he had not tested them. And David said to Sha'ul, "I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them." And David took them off.
40
And he took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd's bag which he had, in his pouch; and his sling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Pelishtite.
41
And the Pelishtite came on and drew near to David, and the man who carried the shield went before him.
42
And when the Pelishtite looked and saw David, he despised him; for he was a youth, and ruddy, and beautiful of appearance.
43
And the Pelishtite said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" And the Pelishtite cursed David by his elohim.
44
And the Pelishtite said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the skies and to the beasts of the field."
45
Then David said to the Pelishtite, "You come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of YHWH of hosts, the Elohim of the armies of Yisra'el, whom you have defied.
46
This day YHWH will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from off you; and I will give the corpses of the camp of the Pelishtim this day to the birds of the skies and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is Elohim in Yisra'el;
47
and that all this assembly may know that YHWH does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is YHWH's, and he will give you into our hand."
48
And it came to pass, when the Pelishtite arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the battle line to meet the Pelishtite.
49
And David put his hand into the bag and took from it a stone, and slung it, and struck the Pelishtite on his forehead; and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.
50
So David prevailed over the Pelishtite with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Pelishtite and killed him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
51
Then David ran and stood over the Pelishtite, and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Pelishtim saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
52
And the men of Yisra'el and of Yehudah arose and shouted, and pursued the Pelishtim until you come to Gai, and to the gates of Eqron. And the slain of the Pelishtim fell on the way to Sha'arayim, as far as Gat and as far as Eqron.
53
And the children of Yisra'el returned from chasing after the Pelishtim, and they plundered their camp.
54
And David took the head of the Pelishtite and brought it to Yerushalayim; but he put his armor in his tent.
55
And when Sha'ul saw David going out to meet the Pelishtite, he said to Avner, the captain of the host, "Avner, whose son is this youth?" And Avner said, "As you yourself live, O king, I do not know."
56
And the king said, "You inquire whose son the young man is."
57
And as David returned from striking the Pelishtite, Avner took him and brought him before Sha'ul, with the head of the Pelishtite in his hand.
58
And Sha'ul said to him, "Whose son are you, young man?" And David said, "The son of your servant Yishai the Beit-Lechemite."
Editorial history

Review record. All four chapter files carry status: stable (v1.0.0) with a named human reviewer (zarazinsfuss), signed off on 2026-11-01 in the Former Prophets wave (FP1) of the canon-cited program. The editor report, the reviewer reports in the chapter files and the sign-off package (data-library/joshua-woh/wave-fp1-signoff-package.md) record every decision.

Selection. Part of the program to translate, as whole chapters, every biblical chapter that the three Raëlian canon books (The Book Which Tells the Truth, Extra-Terrestrials Took Me to Their Planet, Let's Welcome the Extra-Terrestrials) cite. With this release the program is complete: 87 chapters.

Conventions. As in the Kings volumes, proper names are transliterated from the Hebrew with "-ite" gentilics, and each chapter title gives the English form. Šāmayim is "skies" or "heaven(s)" by register; ḥērem is "devote(d) to destruction". The Masoretic text is kept throughout, with one ratified exception at 1 Samuel 6:18, where the Hebrew cannot be construed. The canon's readings appear only in notes headed "Wheel of Heaven reading (reception note, not a translation claim)".

Production. Drafted by Claude Opus 5.5 and taken through the Wheel of Heaven Translation Program pipeline (Translator → Editor → Reviewer → human sign-off). Central glossary 2.84.0–2.90.0; 1-samuel-woh overlay v1.0.0. Reference translation: ASV (1901). Methodology: Source-Text Translation.
