Court tales and apocalyptic visions from the Babylonian and Persian periods

Two genres in one book: court tales of Daniel and his companions surviving the lion's den and the fiery furnace, and apocalyptic visions of successive empires culminating in the son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. The visionary chapters are the principal apocalyptic source in the Hebrew Bible.

Chapitre 1

La troisième année du règne de Joakim, roi de Juda, Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, vint contre Jérusalem et l’assiégea.

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

Le Seigneur livra entre ses mains Joakim, roi de Juda, et une partie des vases de la maison de Dieu ; et il les emporta au pays de Sennaar, dans la maison de son dieu, et il déposa les vases dans le trésor de son dieu.

The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god. He brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

Le roi dit à Asphenez, chef de ses eunuques, d’amener d’entre les enfants d’Israël, de la race royale ou de la noblesse,

The king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in some of the children of Israel, even of the royal offspring and of the nobles;

des jeunes gens sans aucun défaut, beaux de figure, doués de toutes sortes de talents, instruits et intelligents, pleins de vigueur, pour qu’ils se tinssent dans le palais du roi et qu’on leur enseignât la littérature et la langue des Chaldéens.

youths in whom was no defect, but well-favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and endowed with knowledge, and understanding science, and who had the ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.

Le roi leur assigna pour chaque jour une portion des mets royaux et du vin dont il buvait, afin que, ayant été élevés pendant trois ans, ils se tinssent au bout de ce temps devant le roi.

The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at its end they should stand before the king.

Il y avait parmi eux, d’entre les enfants de Juda, Daniel, Ananias, Misaël et Azarias.

Now among these were of the children of Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

Le chef des eunuques leur donna des noms ; il appela Daniel Baltassar, Ananias Sidrac, Misaël Misac, et Azarias Abdénago.

The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.

Daniel résolut en son cœur de ne pas se souiller par les mets du roi et par le vin dont il buvait, et il demanda au chef des eunuques de ne pas l’obliger à se souiller.

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank. Therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Et Dieu fit trouver à Daniel grâce et faveur auprès du chef des eunuques.

Now God made Daniel find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.

Le chef des eunuques dit à Daniel : « Je crains le roi, mon maître, qui a fixé ce que vous devez manger et boire ; car pourquoi verrait-il vos visages plus défaits que ceux des jeunes gens de votre âge ? Vous mettriez en danger ma tête auprès du roi . »

The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink. For why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? So would you endanger my head with the king.”

Alors Daniel dit au maître d’hôtel, que le chef des eunuques avait établi sur Daniel, Ananias, Misaël et Azarias :

Then Daniel said to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

« Fais, je te prie, un essai avec tes serviteurs pendant dix jours, et qu’on nous donne des légumes à manger et de l’eau à boire.

“Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink.

Après cela, tu regarderas nos visages et le visage des jeunes gens qui mangent les mets du roi, et, selon que tu auras vu, tu agiras avec tes serviteurs. »

Then let our faces be examined before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants.”

Il consentit à leur demande et les éprouva pendant dix jours.

So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days.

Au bout de dix jours, ils se trouvèrent avoir meilleur visage et plus d’embonpoint que tous les jeunes gens qui mangeaient les mets du roi.

At the end of ten days, their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king’s dainties.

Et le maître d’hôtel emportait les mets et le vin qu’ils devaient boire, et leur donnait des légumes.

So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they would drink, and gave them vegetables.

À ces jeunes gens, à tous les quatre, Dieu donna du savoir et de l’habileté dans toute la littérature et en toute sagesse, et Daniel avait l’intelligence de toutes sortes de visions et de songes.

Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

Au bout du temps fixé par le roi pour les amener, le chef des eunuques les amena devant Nabuchodonosor.

At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

Le roi s’entretint avec eux, et il ne se trouva personne parmi eux tous comme Daniel, Ananias, Misaël et Azarias ; ils furent donc admis au service du roi.

The king talked with them; and among them all was found no one like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore stood they before the king.

Sur tous les sujets qui réclamaient de la sagesse et de l’intelligence, et sur lesquels le roi les interrogeait, il les trouvait dix fois supérieurs à tous les lettrés et magiciens qui étaient en tout son royaume.

In every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm.

Daniel fut ainsi jusqu’à la première année du roi Cyrus.

Daniel continued even to the first year of king Cyrus.

Chapitre 2

La seconde année du règne de Nabuchodonosor, Nabuchodonosor eut des songes, son esprit fut agité et le sommeil se retira de lui.

In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams; and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep went from him.

Le roi fit appeler les lettrés, les magiciens, les enchanteurs et les Chaldéens pour lui expliquer ses songes ; ils vinrent et ils se tinrent devant le roi.

Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the enchanters, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and stood before the king.

Le roi leur dit : « J’ai fait un songe, et mon esprit est agité, cherchant à connaître ce songe. »

The king said to them, “I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.”

Les Chaldéens répondirent au roi en langue araméenne : « Ô roi, vis éternellement ! Dis le songe à tes serviteurs, et nous en ferons connaître la signification. »

Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in the Syrian language, “O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.”

Le roi répondit aux Chaldéens, en disant : « C’est chose arrêtée par moi. Si vous ne me faites savoir le songe et sa signification, vous serez coupés en morceaux et vos maisons seront réduites en cloaques.

The king answered the Chaldeans, “The thing has gone from me. If you don’t make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you will be cut in pieces, and your houses will be made a dunghill.

Mais si vous me faites connaître le songe et sa signification, vous recevrez de moi des dons et des présents, et de grands honneurs ; ainsi faites-moi connaître le songe et sa signification. »

But if you show the dream and its interpretation, you will receive of me gifts and rewards and great honor. Therefore show me the dream and its interpretation.”

Ils répondirent pour la deuxième fois en disant : « Que le roi dise le songe à ses serviteurs, et nous en ferons connaître la signification. »

They answered the second time and said, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.”

Le roi répondit et dit : « En vérité, je sais que vous cherchez à gagner du temps, parce que vous voyez que c’est chose arrêtée par moi.

The king answered, “I know of a certainty that you are trying to gain time, because you see the thing has gone from me.

Puisque vous ne me faites pas savoir le songe, c’est que vous n’avez qu’une pensée, celle de concerter un discours mensonger et trompeur, pour le tenir devant moi, en attendant que les temps soient changés ; ainsi, dites-moi le songe et je saurai que vous pourrez m’en faire connaître la véritable signification. »

But if you don’t make known to me the dream, there is but one law for you; for you have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, until the situation changes. Therefore tell me the dream, and I will know that you can show me its interpretation.”

Les Chaldéens répondirent devant le roi en disant : « Il n’y a pas d’homme sur la terre qui puisse faire connaître ce que le roi demande. Aussi jamais roi, si grand et si puissant qu’il ait été, n’a demandé pareille chose d’aucun lettré, astrologue ou Chaldéen.

The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, “There is not a man on the earth who can show the king’s matter, because no king, lord, or ruler, has asked such a thing of any magician, or enchanter, or Chaldean.

La chose que le roi demande est difficile, et il n’y a personne qui puisse la faire connaître devant le roi, hormis les dieux dont la demeure n’est pas parmi les mortels. »

It is a rare thing that the king requires, and there is no other who can show it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”

Là-dessus le roi se mit en colère et en grande fureur, et il donna l’ordre de mettre à mort tous les sages de Babylone.

Because of this, the king was angry and very furious, and commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be destroyed.

La sentence ayant été publiée, les sages étaient mis à mort, et on cherchait Daniel et ses compagnons pour les tuer.

So the decree went out, and the wise men were to be slain. They sought Daniel and his companions to be slain.

Alors Daniel fit une réponse prudente et sensée à Arioch, chef des gardes du roi, qui était sorti pour mettre à mort les sages de Babylone.

Then Daniel returned answer with counsel and prudence to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon.

Il prit la parole et dit à Arioch, commandant du roi : « Pourquoi cette sentence sévère de la part du roi ? » Et Arioch exposa la chose à Daniel.

He answered Arioch the king’s captain, “Why is the decree so urgent from the king?” Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

Alors Daniel entra dans le palais et pria le roi de lui accorder un délai afin de faire connaître au roi la signification.

Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would appoint him a time, and he would show the king the interpretation.

Aussitôt Daniel alla dans sa maison et informa de l’affaire Ananias, Misaël et Azarias, ses compagnons,

Then Daniel went to his house and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:

les engageant à implorer la miséricorde du Dieu du ciel sur ce mystère, pour qu’on ne fit point périr Daniel et ses compagnons avec le reste des sages de Babylone.

that they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his companions would not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

Alors le secret fut révélé à Daniel dans une vision pendant la nuit, et Daniel bénit le Dieu du ciel.

Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

Daniel prit la parole et dit : « Béni soit le nom de Dieu, d’éternité en éternité, car à lui appartiennent la sagesse et la force.

Daniel answered, “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever; for wisdom and might are his.

C’est lui qui change les moments et les temps, qui renverse les rois et qui élève les rois, qui donne la sagesse aux sages et le savoir aux intelligents.

He changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings, and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who have understanding.

C’est lui qui révèle les choses profondes et cachées, qui sait ce qui est dans les ténèbres, et la lumière demeure avec lui.

He reveals the deep and secret things. He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.

C’est vous, Dieu de mes pères, que je célèbre et que je loue de ce que vous m’avez donné la sagesse et la force, et de ce que maintenant vous m’avez fait savoir ce que nous vous avons demandé, en nous faisant savoir l’affaire du roi. »

I thank you, and praise you, you God of my fathers, who have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we desired of you; for you have made known to us the king’s matter.”

C’est pourquoi Daniel se rendit auprès d’Arioch, que le roi avait chargé de mettre à mort les sages de Babylone ; il alla et lui parla ainsi : « Ne fais pas périr les sages de Babylone ; introduis-moi devant le roi, et je ferai connaître au roi la signification. »

Therefore Daniel went in to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon. He went and said this to him: “Don’t destroy the wise men of Babylon. Bring me in before the king, and I will show to the king the interpretation.”

Arioch s’empressa de faire entrer Daniel devant le roi et lui parla ainsi : « J’ai trouvé parmi les captifs de Juda un homme qui fera savoir au roi la signification. »

Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said this to him: “I have found a man of the children of the captivity of Judah who will make known to the king the interpretation.”

Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel, qui s’appelait Baltassar : « Es-tu capable de me faire savoir le songe que j’ai eu et sa signification ? »

The king answered Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, “Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen, and its interpretation?”

Daniel répondit en présence du roi et dit : « Le secret que le roi demande, ni sages, ni magiciens, ni lettrés, ni astrologues ne sont capables de le faire connaître au roi.

Daniel answered before the king, and said, “The secret which the king has demanded can’t be shown to the king by wise men, enchanters, magicians, or soothsayers;

Mais il y a un Dieu dans le ciel qui révèle les secrets et qui a fait savoir au roi Nabuchodonosor ce qui doit arriver à la fin des jours. Ton songe et les visions de ton esprit que tu as eues sur ta couche, les voici :

but there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has made known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head on your bed, are these:

Toi, ô roi, tes pensées s’élevaient en ton esprit sur ta couche au sujet de ce qui arriverait après ce temps-ci, et celui qui révèle les secrets t’a fait connaître ce qui doit arriver.

“As for you, O king, your thoughts came on your bed, what should happen hereafter; and he who reveals secrets has made known to you what will happen.

Et moi, ce n’est pas par une sagesse qui serait en moi, supérieure à celle de tous les vivants, que ce secret m’a été révélé, mais c’est afin qu’on en fasse savoir la signification au roi, et que tu connaisses les pensées de ton cœur.

But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but to the intent that the interpretation may be made known to the king, and that you may know the thoughts of your heart.

Toi, ô roi, tu regardais, et voici une grande statue. Cette statue était immense et sa splendeur extraordinaire ; elle se dressait devant toi, et son aspect était terrible.

“You, O king, saw, and behold, a great image. This image, which was mighty, and whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and its appearance was terrifying.

Cette statue avait la tête d’or fin, la poitrine et les bras d’argent, le ventre et les cuisses d’airain,

As for this image, its head was of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of brass,

les jambes de fer, les pieds en partie de fer et en partie d’argile.

its legs of iron, its feet part of iron, and part of clay.

Tu regardais, jusqu’à ce qu’une pierre fut détachée, non par une main, et frappa la statue à ses pieds de fer et d’argile, et les brisa.

You saw until a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces.

Alors furent brisés en même temps le fer, l’argile, l’airain, l’argent et l’or, et ils devinrent comme la balle qui s’élève de l’aire en été, et le vent les emporta sans qu’on en trouve plus aucune trace ; et la pierre qui avait frappé la statue devint une grande montagne et remplit toute la terre.

Then the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold were broken in pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors. The wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them. The stone that struck the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

Voilà le songe ; sa signification, nous allons la dire devant le roi.

“This is the dream; and we will tell its interpretation before the king.

Toi, ô roi, roi des rois, à qui le Dieu du ciel a donné l’empire, la puissance, la force et la gloire,

You, O king, are king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, the strength, and the glory.

entre les mains de qui il a livré, en quelque lieu qu’ils habitent, les enfants des hommes, les bêtes des champs, les oiseaux des cieux, et qu’il a fait dominer sur eux tous : c’est toi qui es la tête d’or.

Wherever the children of men dwell, he has given the animals of the field and the birds of the sky into your hand, and has made you rule over them all. You are the head of gold.

Après toi, il s’élèvera un autre royaume, moindre que toi, puis un troisième royaume d’airain, qui dominera sur toute la terre.

“After you, another kingdom will arise that is inferior to you; and another third kingdom of brass, which will rule over all the earth.

Un quatrième royaume sera fort comme le fer ; de même que le fer écrase et brise tout, et comme le fer qui met en pièces, il écrasera et mettra en pièces tous ceux-là.

The fourth kingdom will be strong as iron, because iron breaks in pieces and subdues all things; and as iron that crushes all these, it will break in pieces and crush.

Si tu as vu les pieds et les orteils en partie d’argile de potier et en partie de fer, c’est que ce sera un royaume divisé ; il y aura en lui de la solidité du fer, selon que tu as vu du fer mêlé à l’argile.

Whereas you saw the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, it will be a divided kingdom; but there will be in it of the strength of the iron, because you saw the iron mixed with miry clay.

Mais comme les orteils des pieds étaient en partie de fer et en partie d’argile, ce royaume sera en partie fort, et il sera en partie fragile.

As the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom will be partly strong, and partly broken.

Si tu as vu le fer mêlé à l’argile, c’est qu’ils seront mêlés de semence d’homme ; mais ils ne tiendront pas l’un à l’autre, de même que le fer ne peut s’allier avec l’argile.

Whereas you saw the iron mixed with miry clay, they will mingle themselves with the seed of men; but they won’t cling to one another, even as iron does not mix with clay.

Dans le temps de ces rois, le Dieu du ciel suscitera un royaume qui ne sera jamais détruit, et dont la domination ne sera point abandonnée à un autre peuple ; il brisera et anéantira tous ces royaumes-là, et lui-même subsistera à jamais,

“In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, nor will its sovereignty be left to another people; but it will break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it will stand forever.

selon que tu as vu qu’une pierre a été détachée de la montagne, non par une main, et qu’elle a brisé le fer, l’airain, l’argile, l’argent et l’or. Le grand Dieu a fait connaître au roi ce qui arrivera dans la suite ; le songe est véritable et sa signification certaine. »

Because you saw that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God has made known to the king what will happen hereafter. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”

Alors le roi Nabuchodonosor tomba sur sa face et se prosterna devant Daniel, et il ordonna qu’on lui offrit des oblations et des parfums.

Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, worshiped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an offering and sweet odors to him.

Le roi parla ensuite à Daniel et dit : « Vraiment votre Dieu est le Dieu des dieux, le seigneur des rois et le révélateur des secrets, puisque tu as pu révéler ce secret. »

The king answered to Daniel, and said, “Of a truth your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since you have been able to reveal this secret.”

Alors le roi éleva Daniel et lui fit de nombreux et riches présents ; il l’établit gouverneur sur toute la province de Babylone et chef suprême sur tous les sages de Babylone.

Then the king made Daniel great, and gave him many great gifts, and made him rule over the whole province of Babylon, and to be chief governor over all the wise men of Babylon.

À la prière de Daniel, le roi commit aux affaires de la province de Babylone Sidrac, Misac et Abdénago ; et Daniel demeura à la cour.

Daniel requested of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of the province of Babylon; but Daniel was in the king’s gate.

Chapitre 3

Le roi Nabuchodonosor fit une statue d’or, dont la hauteur était de soixante coudées et la largeur de six coudées ; il la dressa dans la plaine de Dura, dans la province de Babylone.

Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits, and its width six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.

Et le roi Nabuchodonosor fit rassembler les satrapes, les intendants et les gouverneurs, les grands juges, les trésoriers, les légistes, les juges et tous les magistrats des provinces, pour qu’ils se rendissent à la dédicace de la statue qu’avait dressée le roi Nabuchodonosor.

Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

Ainsi s’assemblèrent les satrapes, les intendants et les gouverneurs, les grands juges, les trésoriers, les légistes, les juges et tous les magistrats des provinces pour la dédicace de la statue que le roi Nabuchodonosor avait dressée ; et ils se tinrent devant la statue qu’avait dressée Nabuchodonosor.

Then the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together to the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

Un héraut cria d’une voix forte : « Voici ce qu’on vous fait savoir, à vous, peuples, nations et langues :

Then the herald cried aloud, “To you it is commanded, peoples, nations, and languages,

Au moment où vous entendrez le son de la trompette, du chalumeau, de la cithare, de la sambuque, du psaltérion, de la cornemuse et de toutes sortes d’instruments, vous vous prosternerez pour adorer la statue d’or que le roi Nabuchodonosor a dressée.

that whenever you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music, you fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up.

Quiconque ne se prosternera pas et n’adorera pas la statue, sera jeté à l’instant au milieu de la fournaise de feu ardent. »

Whoever doesn’t fall down and worship shall be cast into the middle of a burning fiery furnace the same hour.”

C’est pourquoi au montent où tous les peuples entendirent le son de la trompette, du chalumeau, de la cithare, de la sambuque, du psaltérion et de toutes les sortes d’instruments, tous les peuples, nations et langues se prosternèrent, adorant la statue d’or qu’avait dressée le roi Nabuchodonosor.

Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshiped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

Là-dessus, au moment même, des Chaldéens s’approchèrent et dirent du mal des Juifs.

Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and brought accusation against the Jews.

Ils prirent la parole et dirent au roi Nabuchodonosor : « Ô roi, vis à jamais ! »

They answered Nebuchadnezzar the king, “O king, live for ever!

Toi, ô roi, tu as porté un décret ordonnant que tout homme qui entendrait le son de la trompette, du chalumeau, de la cithare, de la sambuque, du psaltérion, de la cornemuse et de toutes les sortes d’instruments, se prosterne pour adorer la statue d’or,

You, O king, have made a decree, that every man that hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image;

et que quiconque ne se prosternera pas pour l’adorer sera jeté au milieu de la fournaise de feu ardent.

and whoever doesn’t fall down and worship shall be cast into the middle of a burning fiery furnace.

Or, il y a des juifs que tu as préposés aux affaires de la province de Babylone, Sidrac, Misac et Abdénago : ces hommes-là n’ont pas d’égard pour toi, ô roi ; ils ne servent pas tes dieux et ils ne se prosternent pas devant la statue d’or que tu as dressée. »

There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, have not respected you. They don’t serve your gods, and don’t worship the golden image which you have set up.”

Alors Nabuchodonosor, irrité et furieux, ordonna d’amener Sidrac, Misac, et Abdénago ; et ces hommes furent amenés devant le roi.

Then Nebuchadnezzar in rage and fury commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. Then these men were brought before the king.

Nabuchodonosor prit la parole et leur dit : « Est-ce à dessein, Sidrac, Misac et Abdénago, que vous ne servez pas mon dieu et que vous n’adorez pas la statue d’or que j’ai dressée !

Nebuchadnezzar answered them, “Is it on purpose, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you don’t serve my god, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?

Maintenant si vous êtes prêts, au moment où vous entendrez le son de la trompette, du chalumeau, de la cithare, de la sambuque, du psaltérion, de la cornemuse et de toutes les sortes d’instruments, à vous prosterner pour adorer la statue que j’ai faite… Mais si vous ne l’adorez pas, vous serez jetés à l’instant même au milieu de la fournaise de feu ardent, et quel est le dieu qui vous délivrera de ma main ? »

Now if you are ready whenever you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music to fall down and worship the image which I have made, good; but if you don’t worship, you shall be cast the same hour into the middle of a burning fiery furnace. Who is that god that will deliver you out of my hands?”

Sidrac, Misac et Abdénago répondirent au roi et dirent : « Nabuchodonosor, sur ce point nous n’avons pas besoin de t’adresser une réponse.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered the king, “Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.

Si vraiment notre Dieu que nous servons peut nous délivrer, il nous délivrera de la fournaise de feu ardent et de ta main, ô roi.

If it happens, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.

Sinon, qu’il soit connu de toi, ô roi, que nous ne servirons pas tes dieux et que nous ne nous prosternerons pas devant la statue d’or que tu as dressée. »

But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.”

Alors Nabuchodonosor fut rempli de fureur, et l’aspect de son visage fut changé envers Sidrac, Misac, et Abdénago. Reprenant la parole, il ordonna de chauffer la fournaise sept fois plus qu’on n’avait jugé convenable de le faire,

Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the form of his appearance was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He spoke, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated.

et il commanda à quelques-uns des plus vigoureux soldats qui étaient dans son armée de lier Sidrac, Misac et Abdénago et de les jeter dans la fournaise de feu ardent.

He commanded certain mighty men who were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.

Alors ces hommes, avec leurs tuniques, leurs robes, leurs manteaux et leurs autres vêtements, furent liés et jetés dans la fournaise de feu ardent.

Then these men were bound in their pants, their tunics, and their mantles, and their other clothes, and were cast into the middle of the burning fiery furnace.

Comme l’ordre du roi était pressant et la fournaise extraordinairement chauffée, la flamme de feu tua ces hommes qui y avaient jeté Sidrac, Misac et Abdénago.

Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Et ces trois hommes, Sidrac, Misac et Abdénago tombèrent au milieu de la fournaise ardente, tout liés. Ce qui suit, je ne l’ai pas trouvé dans les livres hébreux.

These three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the middle of the burning fiery furnace.

Et ils marchaient au milieu de la flamme, louant Dieu et bénissant le Seigneur.

Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste. He spoke and said to his counselors, “Didn’t we cast three men bound into the middle of the fire?” They answered the king, “True, O king.”

Et Azarias, se levant, fit cette prière ; ouvrant la bouche au milieu du feu, il dit :

He answered, “Look, I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are unharmed. The appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.”

Soyez béni, Seigneur, Dieu de nos pères ; votre nom est digne de louange et de gloire à jamais.

Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace. He spoke and said, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, you servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here!” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the middle of the fire.

Car vous êtes juste dans tout ce que vous nous avez fait, et toutes vos œuvres sont vraies ; vos voies sont droites, et vos jugements sont équitables.

The satraps, the deputies, and the governors, and the king’s counselors, being gathered together, saw these men, that the fire had no power on their bodies. The hair of their head wasn’t singed. Their pants weren’t changed, the smell of fire wasn’t even on them.

Car vous avez rendu des jugements équitables ; dans tous les maux que vous avez fait venir sur nous ; et sur la ville sainte de nos pères, Jérusalem ; c’est par un juste jugement que vous avez fait tout cela, à cause de nos péchés.

Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel, and delivered his servants who trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and have yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.

Car nous avons péché et commis l’iniquité en nous retirant de vous, et nous avons manqué en toutes choses.

Therefore I make a decree, that every people, nation, and language, which speak anything evil against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill; because there is no other god who is able to deliver like this.”

Nous n’avons pas écouté vos commandements et nous ne les avons pas observés, et nous n’avons pas agi selon que vous nous l’aviez commandé, afin que nous fussions heureux.

Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

Chapitre 4

Moi, Nabuchodonosor, j’étais tranquille dans ma maison et florissant dans mon palais.

Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.

Je vis un songe qui m’épouvanta, et mes pensées sur ma couche et les visions de mon esprit me troublèrent.

It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked toward me.

Je publiai un décret pour qu’on fit venir devant moi tous les sages de Babylone, pour me faire savoir la signification du songe.

How great are his signs! How mighty are his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. His dominion is from generation to generation.

Alors vinrent les lettrés, les magiciens, les Chaldéens et les astrologues ; je dis le songe devant eux, mais ils ne m’en firent pas savoir la signification.

I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace.

Enfin se présenta devant moi Daniel, dont le nom est Baltassar, d’après le nom de mon dieu, et qui a en lui l’esprit des dieux saints, et je dis le songe devant lui :

I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

« Baltassar, chef des lettrés, comme je sais que l’esprit des dieux saints est en toi et qu’aucun mystère ne t’embarrasse, expose-moi les visions que j’ai vues en songe, et leur signification.

Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.

Voici quelles étaient les visions de mon esprit sur ma couche : Je vis, et voici au milieu de la terre un arbre dont la hauteur était grande.

Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known to me its interpretation.

L’arbre grandit et devint fort ; sa cime atteignait le ciel, et on le voyait des extrémités de toute la terre.

But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. I told the dream before him, saying,

Son feuillage était beau et ses fruits abondants, et il y avait sur lui de la nourriture pour tous ; sous son ombre les bêtes des champs s’abritaient, dans ses branches demeuraient les oiseaux du ciel, et de lui toute chair se nourrissait.

“Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation.

Je contemplai ces visions de mon esprit sur ma couche, et voici qu’un veillant, un saint, descendait du ciel.

Thus were the visions of my head on my bed: I saw, and behold, a tree in the middle of the earth; and its height was great.

Il cria avec force et parla ainsi : Abattez l’arbre et coupez ses branches ; secouez son feuillage et dispersez ses fruits ; que les animaux s’enfuient de dessous lui, et que les oiseaux quittent ses branches.

The tree grew, and was strong, and its height reached to the sky, and its sight to the end of all the earth.

Toutefois laissez en terre la souche de ses racines, mais dans des chaînes de fer et d’airain, au milieu du gazon des champs. Qu’il soit trempé de la rosée du ciel et qu’il partage avec les animaux l’herbe de la terre.

The leaves of it were beautiful, and it had much fruit, and in it was food for all. The animals of the field had shade under it, and the birds of the sky lived in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.

Que son cœur ne soit plus un cœur d’homme, et qu’un cœur de bête lui soit donné, et que sept temps passent sur lui.

“I saw in the visions of my head on my bed, and behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from the sky.

Cette sentence repose sur un décret des veillants, et cette affaire est un ordre des saints, afin que les vivants sachent que le Très-Haut domine sur la royauté humaine, qu’il la donne à qui il veut, et qu’il y élève le plus humble des hommes.

He cried aloud, and said thus, ‘Cut down the tree, and cut off its branches! Shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit! Let the animals get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches.

Tel est le songe que j’ai vu, moi, le roi Nabuchodonosor ; et toi, Baltassar, dis-en la signification, car tous les sages de mon royaume ne peuvent m’en faire savoir la signification ; mais toi, tu le peux, car l’esprit des dieux saints est en toi. »

Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of the sky. Let his portion be with the animals in the grass of the earth.

Alors Daniel, dont le nom est Baltassar, demeura quelque temps interdit, et ses pensées le troublaient. Le roi reprit et dit : « Que le songe et sa signification ne te troublent point ! » Baltassar répondit en disant : « Mon seigneur, que le songe soit pour tes ennemis, et sa signification pour tes adversaires.

Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let an animal’s heart be given to him. Then let seven times pass over him.

L’arbre que tu as vu, qui grandit et devint fort, dont la cime atteignait au ciel et qu’on voyait de toute la terre ;

“‘The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will, and sets up over it the lowest of men.’

dont le feuillage était beau et les fruits abondants ; où il y avait de la nourriture pour tous ; sous lequel s’abritaient les animaux des champs, et dans les branches duquel demeuraient les oiseaux du ciel,

“This dream I, king Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and you, Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”

cet arbre, c’est toi, ô roi, qui es devenu grand et fort, dont la grandeur s’est accrue et a atteint au ciel, et dont la domination s’étend jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre.

Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken mute for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered, “Belteshazzar, don’t let the dream, or the interpretation, trouble you.” Belteshazzar answered, “My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you, and its interpretation to your adversaries.

Si le roi a vu un veillant, un saint, descendant du ciel et disant : Abattez l’arbre et détruisez-le ; toutefois laissez en terre la souche de ses racines, mais dans des chaînes de fer et d’airain, au milieu du gazon des champs ; qu’il soit trempé de la rosée du ciel, et qu’il fasse sa part avec les animaux des champs, jusqu’à ce que sept temps aient passé sur lui : en voici la signification, ô roi !

The tree that you saw, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached to the sky, and its sight to all the earth;

C’est un décret du Très-Haut qui s’accomplira sur mon seigneur le roi :

whose leaves were beautiful, and its fruit plentiful, and in it was food for all; under which the animals of the field lived, and on whose branches the birds of the sky had their habitation:

On te chassera du milieu des hommes, et ta demeure sera parmi les animaux des champs ; on te donnera, comme aux bœufs, de l’herbe à manger et on te laissera tremper par la rosée du ciel, et sept temps passeront sur toi, jusqu’à ce que tu saches que le Très-Haut domine sur la royauté des hommes et qu’il la donne à qui il lui plaît.

it is you, O king, that have grown and become strong; for your greatness has grown, and reaches to the sky, and your dominion to the end of the earth.

Et si on a ordonné de laisser la souche des racines de l’arbre, c’est que ta royauté te sera rendue quand tu auras reconnu que le ciel a la domination.

“Whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from the sky, and saying, ‘Cut down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of the sky. Let his portion be with the animals of the field, until seven times pass over him.

C’est pourquoi, ô roi, que mon conseil soit agréé devant toi : rachète tes péchés par la justice et tes iniquités par la miséricorde envers les malheureux, si ta prospérité doit se prolonger encore. »

“This is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which has come on my lord the king:

Toutes ces choses arrivèrent au roi Nabuchodonosor.

that you shall be driven from men, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You shall be made to eat grass as oxen, and shall be wet with the dew of the sky, and seven times shall pass over you; until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.

Au bout de douze mois, comme il se promenait sur les terrasses du palais royal de Babylone,

Whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree; your kingdom shall be sure to you, after that you will have known that the heavens do rule.

le roi prit la parole et dit : « N’est-ce pas là Babylone la grande, que j’ai bâtie comme résidence royale par la puissance de ma force et pour la gloire de ma majesté. »

Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of your tranquility.”

La parole était encore dans la bouche du roi, qu’une voix descendit du ciel : « On te fait savoir, roi Nabuchodonosor, que ta royauté a passé loin de toi.

All this came on the king Nebuchadnezzar.

On te chassera du milieu des hommes, et ta demeure sera avec les animaux des champs ; on te donnera, comme aux bœufs, de l’herbe a manger, et sept temps passeront sur toi, jusqu’à ce que tu saches que le Très-Haut domine sur la royauté des hommes, et qu’il la donne à qui il lui plaît. »

At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon.

Au même moment, la parole s’accomplit sur Nabuchodonosor ; il fut chassé du milieu des hommes ; il mangea de l’herbe comme les bœufs, et son corps fut trempé de la rosée du ciel, jusqu’à ce que ses cheveux crussent comme les plumes des aigles, et ses ongles comme ceux des oiseaux.

The king spoke and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?”

Mais, à la fin des jours, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je levai les yeux vers le ciel, et ma raison me revint. Je bénis le Très-Haut, et je louai et glorifiai Celui qui vit éternellement, dont la domination est une domination éternelle, et dont le règne subsiste de génération en génération.

While the word was in the king’s mouth, a voice came from the sky, saying, “O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: ‘The kingdom has departed from you.

Tous les habitants de la terre ne comptent pour rien devant lui ; il agit comme il lui plaît avec l’armée des cieux et avec les habitants de la terre, et il n’y a personne pour lui frapper sur la main et lui dire : « Que faites-vous ? »

You shall be driven from men; and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You shall be made to eat grass as oxen. Seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.’”

Dans le même temps, ma raison me revint et, pour la gloire de ma royauté, ma majesté et ma splendeur me revinrent ; mes conseillers et mes grands me rappelèrent, je fus rétabli dans ma royauté, et ma puissance s’accrut encore.

This was fulfilled the same hour on Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from men, and ate grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky, until his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.

Maintenant, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je loue, j’exalte et je glorifie le roi du ciel, dont toutes les œuvres sont vraies et les voies justes, et qui peut humilier ceux qui marchent avec orgueil. »

At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives forever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation.

All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and no one can stop his hand, or ask him, “What are you doing?”

At the same time my understanding returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added to me.

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those who walk in pride he is able to abase.

Chapitre 5

Le roi Baltasar fit un grand festin à mille de ses princes, et en présence de ces mille il but du vin.

Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

Excité par le vin, Baltasar fit apporter les vases d’or et d’argent que Nabuchodonosor, son père, avait enlevés du temple qui est à Jérusalem, afin que le roi et ses princes, ses femmes et ses concubines, s’en servissent pour boire.

Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded that the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem be brought to him; that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink from them.

Alors on apporta les vases d’or qui avaient été enlevés du temple de la maison de Dieu qui est à Jérusalem, et le roi et ses princes, ses femmes et ses concubines s’en servirent pour boire.

Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of God’s house which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them.

Ils burent du vin, et ils louèrent les dieux d’or et d’argent, d’airain, de fer, de bois et de pierre.

They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

À ce moment apparurent des doigts de main humaine qui écrivaient, en face du candélabre, sur la chaux de la muraille du palais royal ; et le roi vit le bout de la main qui écrivait.

In the same hour, the fingers of a man’s hand came out and wrote near the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace. The king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

Alors le roi changea de couleur, et ses pensées le troublèrent ; les jointures de ses reins se relâchèrent et ses genoux se heurtèrent l’un contre l’autre.

Then the king’s face was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his thighs were loosened, and his knees struck one against another.

Le roi cria avec force qu’on fit venir les magiciens, les Chaldéens et les astrologues ; et le roi prit la parole et dit aux sages de Babylone : « Quiconque lira cette écriture et m’en fera connaître la signification, sera revêtu de pourpre et portera au cou une chaîne d’or, et il commandera en troisième dans le royaume. »

The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing, and shows me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

Alors tous les sages du roi entrèrent, mais ils ne purent lire ce qui était écrit, ni en faire savoir la signification au roi.

Then all the king’s wise men came in; but they could not read the writing, and couldn’t make known to the king the interpretation.

Alors le roi Baltasar fut très effrayé ; il changea de couleur, et ses princes furent consternés.

Then king Belshazzar was greatly troubled, and his face was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed.

La reine, apprenant les paroles du roi et de ses princes, entra dans la salle du festin ; la reine prit la parole et dit : « Ô roi, vis éternellement ! Que tes pensées ne te troublent pas, et que tes couleurs ne changent point !

The queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house. The queen spoke and said, “O king, live forever; don’t let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your face be changed.

Il y a un homme de ton royaume en qui réside l’esprit des dieux saints ; dans les jours de ton père, on trouva en lui une lumière, une intelligence et une sagesse pareilles à la sagesse des dieux. Aussi le roi Nabuchodonosor ton père, — le roi, ton père, — l’établit chef des lettrés, des magiciens, des Chaldéens, des astrologues, parce qu’un esprit supérieur,

There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him. The king Nebuchadnezzar your father, yes, the king, your father, made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

de la science et de l’intelligence pour interpréter les songes, pour faire connaître les énigmes et résoudre les questions difficiles furent trouvés en lui, en Daniel, à qui le roi avait donné le nom de Baltassar. Qu’on appelle donc Daniel et il te fera connaître la signification ! »

because an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting of dreams, showing of dark sentences, and dissolving of doubts were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.”

Alors Daniel fut introduit devant le roi. Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel : « Es-tu ce Daniel, l’un des captifs de Juda, que le roi, mon père, a amenés de Judée ?

Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel, “Are you that Daniel of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?

J’ai entendu dire à ton sujet que l’esprit des dieux est en toi, qu’une lumière, une intelligence et une sagesse extraordinaires se trouvent en toi.

I have heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you, and that light, understanding, and excellent wisdom are found in you.

On vient d’introduire devant moi les sages et les magiciens pour lire cette écriture et m’en faire savoir la signification ; mais ils n’ont pu me faire connaître la signification de ces mots.

Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me its interpretation; but they could not show the interpretation of the thing.

Et moi, j’ai entendu dire de toi que tu peux donner les significations et résoudre les questions difficiles. Si donc tu peux lire ce qui est écrit et m’en faire savoir la signification, tu seras revêtu de pourpre, tu porteras au cou une chaîne d’or, et tu commanderas en troisième dans le royaume. »

But I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations, and dissolve doubts. Now if you can read the writing, and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

Alors Daniel prit la parole et dit devant le roi : « Que tes dons soient à toi, et donne à un autre tes présents ! Toutefois je lirai au roi ce qui est écrit et je lui en ferai savoir la signification.

Then Daniel answered before the king, “Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another. Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

Ô roi, le Dieu Très-Haut avait donné à Nabuchodonosor, ton père, la royauté et la grandeur, la gloire et la majesté ;

“You, king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty.

et à cause de la grandeur qu’il lui avait donnée, tous les peuples, nations et langues étaient dans la crainte et tremblaient devant lui ; il faisait mourir qui il voulait, et il donnait la vie à qui il voulait ; il élevait qui il voulait, et il abaissait qui il voulait.

Because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. He killed whom he wanted to, and he kept alive whom he wanted to. He raised up whom he wanted to, and he put down whom he wanted to.

Mais son cœur s’étant élevé et son esprit s’étant endurci jusqu’à l’arrogance, on le fit descendre du trône de sa royauté et la grandeur lui fut ôtée.

But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.

Il fut chassé du milieu des enfants des hommes, son cœur devint semblable à celui des bêtes et sa demeure fut avec les ânes sauvages ; on le nourrit d’herbe comme les bœufs, et son corps fut trempé de la rosée du ciel, jusqu’à ce qu’il reconnût que le Dieu Très-haut domine sur la royauté des hommes, et qu’il y élève qui il lui plaît.

He was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the animals’, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky; until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and that he sets up over it whomever he will.

Et toi, son fils, Baltasar, tu n’as pas humilié ton cœur, quoique tu susses toutes ces choses.

“You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,

Mais tu t’es élevé contre le Seigneur du ciel ; on a apporté devant toi les vases de sa maison, et toi, tes princes, tes femmes et tes concubines, vous y avez bu du vin ; tu as loué les dieux d’argent et d’or, d’airain, de fer, de bois et de pierre, qui ne voient, ni n’entendent, ni ne connaissent rien ; et le Dieu qui a dans sa main ton souffle et de qui relèvent toutes tes voies, tu ne l’as pas glorifié.

but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, or hear, or know; and you have not glorified the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways.

C’est alors qu’a été envoyé de sa part ce bout de main et qu’a été tracé ce qui est écrit là.

Then the part of the hand was sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed.

Voici l’écriture qui a été tracée : Mené mené. Theqel. Oupharsin.

“This is the writing that was inscribed: ‘MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.’

Et voici la signification de ces mots : Mené (compté) : Dieu a compté ton règne et y a mis fin.

“This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE: God has counted your kingdom, and brought it to an end.

Theqel (pesé) : tu as été pesé dans les balances et trouvé léger.

TEKEL: you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.

Perès (divisé) : ton royaume sera divisé et donné aux Mèdes et aux Perses. »

PERES: your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.”

Alors, sur l’ordre de Baltasar, on revêtit Daniel de pourpre, on lui mit au cou une chaîne d’or, et on publia à son sujet qu’il commanderait en troisième dans le royaume.

Then Belshazzar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Dans la nuit même, Baltasar, roi des Chaldéens, fut tué.

In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.

Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

Chapitre 6

Et Darius le Mède reçut la royauté, étant âgé d’environ soixante-deux ans.

It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred twenty satraps, who should be throughout the whole kingdom;

Il plut à Darius d’établir sur le royaume cent vingt satrapes, pour être répartis dans tout le royaume.

and over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one; that these satraps might give account to them, and that the king should suffer no loss.

Et il mit au-dessus d’eux trois ministres, dont Daniel était l’un, et ces satrapes devaient leur rendre compte, afin que le roi ne fût pas lésé.

Then this Daniel was distinguished above the presidents and the satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.

Or Daniel surpassait les ministres et les satrapes, parce qu’il y avait en lui un esprit supérieur, et le roi pensait à l’établir sur tout le royaume.

Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel as touching the kingdom; but they could find no occasion or fault, because he was faithful. There wasn’t any error or fault found in him.

Alors les ministres et les satrapes cherchèrent à trouver un sujet d’accusation contre Daniel touchant les affaires du royaume ; mais ils ne purent trouver aucun sujet, ni rien à reprendre ; car il était fidèle, et il ne se trouvait en lui rien de fautif, ni de répréhensible.

Then these men said, “We won’t find any occasion against this Daniel, unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God.”

Ces hommes dirent donc : « Nous ne trouverons aucun sujet contre ce Daniel, à moins de trouver quelque chose contre lui dans la loi de son Dieu. »

Then these presidents and satraps assembled together to the king, and said thus to him, “King Darius, live forever!

Alors ces ministres et ces satrapes se rendirent à grand bruit chez le roi et lui parlèrent ainsi : « Roi Darius, vis éternellement !

All the presidents of the kingdom, the deputies and the satraps, the counselors and the governors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a strong decree, that whoever asks a petition of any god or man for thirty days, except of you, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.

Tous les ministres du royaume, les intendants, les satrapes, les conseillers et les gouverneurs se sont entendus pour rendre un édit royal et publier une défense portant que quiconque, dans l’espace de trente jours, adressera des prières à quelque dieu ou homme, si ce n’est à toi, ô roi, sera jeté dans la fosse aux lions.

Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it not be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which doesn’t alter.”

Maintenant, ô roi, porte la défense et écris le décret, afin qu’il n’y puisse être dérogé, selon la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, qui est irrévocable. »

Therefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.

En conséquence, le roi Darius écrivit le décret et la défense.

When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his room toward Jerusalem) and he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did before.

Lorsque Daniel eut appris que le décret était écrit, il entra dans sa maison, qui avait, dans la chambre haute, des fenêtres ouvertes du côté de Jérusalem. Trois fois par jour il se mettait à genoux, il priait et louait Dieu, comme il le faisait auparavant.

Then these men assembled together, and found Daniel making petition and supplication before his God.

Alors ces hommes vinrent à grand bruit et trouvèrent Daniel priant et invoquant son Dieu.

Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king’s decree: “Haven’t you signed a decree that every man who makes a petition to any god or man within thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered, “This thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which doesn’t alter.”

Alors ils s’approchèrent du roi et lui parlèrent au sujet de la défense royale : « N’as-tu pas écrit une défense portant que quiconque, pendant trente jours, prierait quelque dieu ou homme, si ce n’est toi, ô roi, serait jeté dans la fosse aux lions ? » Le roi répondit et dit : « La chose est certaine, d’après la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, qui est irrévocable. »

Then they answered and said before the king, “That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, doesn’t respect you, O king, nor the decree that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.”

Alors ils reprirent et dirent devant le roi : « Daniel, l’un des captifs de Juda, n’a pas eu égard à toi, ô roi, ni à la défense que tu as écrite ; mais trois fois le jour il fait sa prière. »

Then the king, when he heard these words, was very displeased, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he labored until the going down of the sun to rescue him.

Le roi, entendant ces paroles, en eut un grand déplaisir ; quant à Daniel, il prit à cœur de le délivrer, et jusqu’au coucher du soleil il essaya de le sauver.

Then these men assembled together to the king, and said to the king, “Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians, that no decree nor statute which the king establishes may be changed.”

Alors ces hommes vinrent à grand bruit vers le roi, et ils dirent au roi : « Sache, ô roi, que c’est la loi des Mèdes et des Perses qu’on ne peut déroger à toute défense et tout décret rendu par le roi. »

Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. The king spoke and said to Daniel, “Your God whom you serve continually, he will deliver you.”

Alors le roi donna l’ordre qu’on amenât Daniel et qu’on le jetât dans la fosse aux lions. Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel : « Puisse ton Dieu, que tu sers constamment, te délivrer lui-même ! »

A stone was brought, and laid on the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.

On apporta une pierre et on la mit sur l’ouverture de la fosse ; le roi la scella de son anneau et de l’anneau des princes, afin que rien ne fût changé à l’égard de Daniel.

Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting. No musical instruments were brought before him; and his sleep fled from him.

Le roi s’en alla ensuite dans son palais ; il passa la nuit à jeun et ne fit pas venir de femmes auprès de lui et le sommeil s’enfuit loin de lui.

Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste to the den of lions.

Puis le roi se leva à l’aurore, au point du jour, et il se rendit en toute hâte à la fosse aux lions.

When he came near to the den to Daniel, he cried with a troubled voice. The king spoke and said to Daniel, “Daniel, servant of the living God, is your God, whom you serve continually, able to deliver you from the lions?”

Quand il fut près de la fosse, il cria vers Daniel d’une voix triste ; le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel : « Daniel, serviteur du Dieu vivant, ton Dieu que tu sers constamment a-t-il pu te délivrer des lions ? »

Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, live forever!

Alors Daniel parla avec le roi : « Ô roi, vis éternellement !

My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not hurt me; because as before him innocence was found in me; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm.”

Mon Dieu a envoyé son ange et fermé la gueule des lions, qui ne m’ont fait aucun mal, parce que j’ai été trouvé innocent devant mon Dieu ; et devant toi non plus, ô roi, je n’ai commis aucun mal ! »

Then the king was exceedingly glad, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no kind of harm was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

Alors le roi fut très joyeux à son sujet, et il ordonna de retirer Daniel de la fosse. Daniel fut donc retiré de la fosse, et on ne trouva sur lui aucune blessure, parce qu’il avait cru en son Dieu.

The king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions mauled them, and broke all their bones in pieces, before they came to the bottom of the den.

Sur l’ordre du roi, on amena ces hommes qui avaient dit du mal de Daniel, et on les jeta dans la fosse aux lions, eux, leurs femmes et leurs enfants. Ils n’avaient pas encore atteint le fond de la fosse, que les lions les saisirent et brisèrent tous leurs os.

Then king Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the earth: “Peace be multiplied to you.

Alors le roi Darius écrivit à tous les peuples, nations et langues, qui habitent sur toute la terre : « Que la paix vous soit donnée en abondance !

“I make a decree that in all the dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel; “for he is the living God, and steadfast forever. His kingdom is that which will not be destroyed. His dominion will be even to the end.

Par moi est publié l’ordre que dans toute l’étendue de mon royaume on craigne et on tremble devant le Dieu de Daniel ; car il est le Dieu vivant, qui subsiste éternellement ; son royaume ne sera jamais détruit et sa domination n’aura pas de fin.

He delivers and rescues. He works signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.”

Il délivre et il sauve, il fait des signes et des prodiges au ciel et sur la terre ; c’est lui qui a délivré Daniel de la griffe des lions. »

So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Chapitre 7

La première année du règne de Baltasar, roi de Babylone, Daniel, étant sur sa couche, vit un songe et des visions en son esprit. Il écrivit ensuite le songe et raconta la substance des faits.

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head on his bed. Then he wrote the dream and told the sum of the matters.

Daniel prit la parole et dit : « je voyais dans ma vision pendant la nuit, et voici que les quatre vents du ciel fondaient sur la grande mer,

Daniel spoke and said, “I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the sky broke out on the great sea.

Et quatre grandes bêtes montèrent de la mer, différentes l’une de l’autre.

Four great animals came up from the sea, different from one another.

La première était semblable à un lion et avait des ailes d’aigle. Je contemplais, jusqu’au moment où ses ailes furent arrachées, et où elle fut enlevée de terre, et dressée sur ses pieds, comme un homme, et où un cœur d’homme lui fut donné.

“The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings. I watched until its wings were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made to stand on two feet as a man. A man’s heart was given to it.

Et voici une autre bête, une deuxième, ressemblant à un ours ; elle dressait l’un de ses côtés, et trois côtes étaient dans sa gueule entre ses dents, et on lui disait : « Lève-toi, mange beaucoup de chair !

“Behold, there was another animal, a second, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth. They said this to it: ‘Arise! Devour much flesh!’

Après cela, je regardais, et voici une autre bête semblable a un léopard ; elle avait sur son dos quatre ailes d’oiseau, et la bête avait quatre têtes ; et la domination lui fut donnée.

“After this I saw, and behold, another, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird. The animal also had four heads; and dominion was given to it.

Après cela je regardais dans les visions de la nuit, et voici une quatrième bête, terrible, effrayante et extraordinairement forte ; elle avait de grandes dents de fer ; elle dévorait et brisait, et le reste elle le foulait aux pieds ; elle était différente de toutes les bêtes qui l’avaient précédée, et elle avait dix cornes.

“After this I saw in the night visions, and, behold, there was a fourth animal, awesome and powerful, and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth. It devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet. It was different than all the animals that were before it. It had ten horns.

Je considérais les cornes, et voici qu’une autre corne, petite, s’éleva au milieu d’elles, et trois des premières cornes furent arrachées par elle ; et voici que cette corne avait des yeux comme des yeux d’homme, et une bouche qui disait de grandes choses.

“I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots: and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.

Je regardais, jusqu’au moment où des trônes furent placés, et où un vieillard s’assit. Son vêtement était blanc comme de la neige, et les cheveux de sa tête étaient comme de la laine pure. Son trône était des flammes de feu ; les roues, un feu ardent.

“I watched until thrones were placed, and one who was ancient of days sat. His clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool. His throne was fiery flames, and its wheels burning fire.

Un fleuve de feu coulait, sortant de devant lui ; mille milliers le servaient, et une myriade de myriades se tenaient debout devant lui. Le Juge s’assit, et des livres furent ouverts.

A fiery stream issued and came out from before him. Thousands of thousands ministered to him. Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The judgment was set. The books were opened.

Je regardais alors, à cause du bruit des grandes paroles que la corne proférait ; je regardais, jusqu’au moment où la bête fut tuée, et son corps détruit et livré à la flamme de feu.

“I watched at that time because of the voice of the great words which the horn spoke. I watched even until the animal was slain, and its body destroyed, and it was given to be burned with fire.

Au reste des bêtes aussi, on avait ôté leur domination, et la durée de leur vie avait été fixée jusqu’à un temps et un moment.

As for the rest of the animals, their dominion was taken away; yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.

Je regardais dans les visions de la nuit, et voici que sur les nuées vint comme un Fils d’homme ; il s’avança jusqu’au vieillard, et on le fit approcher devant lui.

“I saw in the night visions, and behold, there came with the clouds of the sky one like a son of man, and he came even to the ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

Et il lui fut donné domination, gloire et règne, et tous les peuples, nations et langues le servirent. Sa domination est une domination éternelle qui ne passera point, et son règne ne sera jamais détruit.

Dominion was given him, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which will not pass away, and his kingdom that which will not be destroyed.

Pour moi, Daniel, mon esprit fut troublé au dedans de moi, et les visions de ma tête m’effrayèrent.

“As for me, Daniel, my spirit was grieved within my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.

Je m’approchai vers l’un de ceux qui se tenaient là, et je lui demandai quelque chose de certain sur tout cela, et il me parla pour m’en donner l’explication.

I came near to one of those who stood by, and asked him the truth concerning all this. “So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.

Ces grandes bêtes, qui sont quatre, ce sont quatre rois qui s’élèveront de la terre ;

‘These great animals, which are four, are four kings, who will arise out of the earth.

mais les Saints du Très-Haut recevront le royaume, et ils posséderont le royaume pour l’éternité, pour une éternité d’éternités.

But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.’

Alors je voulus avoir une certitude sur la quatrième bête qui était différente de toutes les autres, extrêmement terrible, dont les dents étaient de fer et les griffes d’airain, qui mangeait, brisait et foulait aux pieds ce qui restait ;

“Then I desired to know the truth concerning the fourth animal, which was different than all of them, exceedingly terrible, whose teeth were of iron, and its nails of brass; which devoured, broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet;

et sur les dix cornes qui étaient sur sa tête, et sur l’autre corne qui s’était élevée et devant laquelle trois étaient tombées, cette corne qui avait des yeux et une bouche proférant de grandes choses, et qui paraissait plus grande que ses compagnes.

and concerning the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up, and before which three fell, even that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spoke great things, whose look was more stout than its fellows.

Je regardai, et cette corne faisait la guerre aux Saints et l’emportait sur eux,

I saw, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them,

jusqu’à ce que le vieillard vint, que le jugement fut donné aux Saints du Très Haut, et que le temps arriva où les Saints possédèrent le royaume.

until the ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the Most High, and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.

Il me parla ainsi : « La quatrième bête, c’est un quatrième royaume qui sera sur la terre, différent de tous les royaumes, et qui dévorera toute la terre, la foulera et la réduira en poudre.

“Thus he said, ‘The fourth animal will be a fourth kingdom on earth, which will be different than all the kingdoms, and will devour the whole earth, and will tread it down, and break it in pieces.

Les dix cornes signifient que de ce royaume se lèveront dix rois ; un autre se lèvera après eux, qui différera des précédents, et il abattra trois rois.

As for the ten horns, ten kings will arise out of this kingdom. Another will arise after them; and he will be different than the former, and he will put down three kings.

Il proférera des paroles contre le Très-Haut, il opprimera les Saints du Très-Haut, et formera le dessein de changer les temps et la loi, et les Saints seront livrés en sa main jusqu’à un temps, des temps et une moitié de temps.

He will speak words against the Most High, and will wear out the saints of the Most High. He will plan to change the times and the law; and they will be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time.

Et le jugement se tiendra, et on lui ôtera sa domination pour le détruire et l’anéantir pour toujours.

“‘But the judgment will be set, and they will take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it to the end.

Et le règne, la domination et la grandeur des royaumes qui sont sous tous les cieux seront donnés au peuple des Saints du Très-Haut ; son règne est un règne éternel, et toutes les puissances le serviront et lui obéiront. »

The kingdom and the dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole sky, will be given to the people of the saints of the Most High. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions will serve and obey him.’

Voilà la fin du discours. Moi, Daniel, mes pensées m’effrayèrent beaucoup, je changeai de couleur ; mais je conservai la chose dans mon cœur.

“Here is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts much troubled me, and my face was changed in me; but I kept the matter in my heart.”

Chapitre 8

La troisième année du règne du roi Baltasar, une vision m’apparut, à moi Daniel, après celle qui m’était apparue auparavant.

In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, even to me, Daniel, after that which appeared to me at the first.

Et je vis dans la vision ; et il arriva, comme je regardais, que je me trouvais à Suse, la forteresse qui est dans la province d’Elam, et je vis dans la vision, et j’étais près du fleuve Oulaï.

I saw the vision. Now it was so, that when I saw, I was in the citadel of Susa, which is in the province of Elam. I saw in the vision, and I was by the river Ulai.

Je levai les yeux et je vis : et voici qu’un bélier se tenait devant le fleuve ; il avait deux cornes ; les deux cornes étaient hautes, mais l’une était plus haute que l’autre, et la plus haute s’élevait la dernière.

Then I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns. The two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.

Je vis le bélier heurtant de ses cornes vers l’occident, vers le septentrion et vers le midi ; aucune bête ne tenait devant lui, et personne ne délivrait de sa main ; il faisait ce qu’il voulait et grandissait.

I saw the ram pushing westward, northward, and southward. No animals could stand before him. There wasn’t any who could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and magnified himself.

Et moi, je considérais avec attention, et voici qu’un jeune bouc venait de l’occident sur la face de toute la terre, sans toucher la terre, et le bouc avait entre les yeux une corne très apparente.

As I was considering, behold, a male goat came from the west over the surface of the whole earth, and didn’t touch the ground. The goat had a notable horn between his eyes.

Il arriva jusqu’au bélier aux deux cornes, que j’avais vu se tenant devant le fleuve, et il courut contre lui dans l’ardeur de sa force.

He came to the ram that had the two horns, which I saw standing before the river, and ran on him in the fury of his power.

Je le vis s’approcher du bélier ; s’irritant contre lui, il frappa le bélier et lui brisa les deux cornes, sans que le bélier eut la force de se tenir devant lui ; il le jeta par terre et le foula aux pieds, et personne ne délivrait le bélier de sa main.

I saw him come close to the ram, and he was moved with anger against him, and struck the ram, and broke his two horns. There was no power in the ram to stand before him; but he cast him down to the ground, and trampled on him. There was no one who could deliver the ram out of his hand.

Le jeune bouc grandit extrêmement et, quand il fut devenu fort, la grande corne se brisa, et je vis quatre cornes s’élever à sa place vers les quatre vents du ciel.

The male goat magnified himself exceedingly. When he was strong, the great horn was broken; and instead of it there came up four notable horns toward the four winds of the sky.

De l’une d’elles sortit une corne, petite, qui grandit beaucoup vers le midi, vers l’orient et vers le glorieux pays.

Out of one of them came out a little horn, which grew exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the glorious land.

Elle grandit jusqu’à l’armée des cieux ; elle fit tomber à terre une partie de cette armée et des étoiles, et les foula aux pieds.

It grew great, even to the army of the sky; and it cast down some of the army and of the stars to the ground, and trampled on them.

Elle grandit jusqu’au chef de l’armée et lui enleva le culte perpétuel, et le lieu de son sanctuaire fut renversé.

Yes, it magnified itself, even to the prince of the army; and it took away from him the continual burnt offering, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.

The army was given over to it together with the continual burnt offering through disobedience. It cast down truth to the ground, and it did its pleasure and prospered.

Et j’entendis un saint qui parlait : et un autre saint dit à celui qui parlait : « Jusqu’à quand durera ce qu’annonce la vision touchant le culte perpétuel, le péché de désolation. ainsi que l’abandon du sanctuaire et de l’armée pour être foulés ? »

Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said to that certain one who spoke, “How long will the vision about the continual burnt offering, and the disobedience that makes desolate, to give both the sanctuary and the army to be trodden under foot be?”

Il me dit : « Jusqu’à deux mille trois cents soirs et matins ; puis le sanctuaire sera purifié. »

He said to me, “To two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary will be cleansed.”

Tandis que moi, Daniel, je voyais la vision et que j’en cherchais l’intelligence, voici que se tenait devant moi comme une figure d’homme.

When I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it. Then behold, there stood before me something like the appearance of a man.

Et j’entendis une voix d’homme du milieu de l’Oulaï ; elle cria et dit : « Gabriel, fais-lui comprendre la vision. »

I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, which called, and said, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.”

Il vint alors près du lieu où je me tenais, et à son approche je fus effrayé, et je tombai sur ma face. Il me dit : « Comprends, fils de l’homme, que la vision est pour le temps de la fin. »

So he came near where I stood; and when he came, I was frightened, and fell on my face; but he said to me, “Understand, son of man; for the vision belongs to the time of the end.”

Comme il me parlait, je tombai par terre sur ma face, frappé d’assoupissement ; mais il me toucha et me fit tenir debout, au lieu où je me tenais.

Now as he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep with my face toward the ground; but he touched me, and set me upright.

Et il dit : « Voici que je vais t’apprendre ce qui arrivera au dernier temps de la colère ; car c’est pour le temps de la fin.

He said, “Behold, I will make you know what will be in the latter time of the indignation; for it belongs to the appointed time of the end.

Le bélier à deux cornes que tu as vu, ce sont les rois de Médie et de Perse ;

The ram which you saw, that had the two horns, they are the kings of Media and Persia.

le bouc velu, c’est le roi de Javan, et la grande corne entre ses yeux, c’est le premier roi.

The rough male goat is the king of Greece. The great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.

Si cette corne s’est brisée, et si quatre cornes se sont dressées à sa place ; c’est que quatre royautés s’élèveront de cette nation, mais sans avoir la même force.

As for that which was broken, in the place where four stood up, four kingdoms will stand up out of the nation, but not with his power.

À la fin de leur domination, quand le nombre des infidèles sera complet, il s’élèvera un roi au dur visage et pénétrant les choses cachées.

“In the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors have come to the full, a king of fierce face, and understanding dark sentences, will stand up.

His power will be mighty, but not by his own power. He will destroy awesomely, and will prosper in what he does. He will destroy the mighty ones and the holy people.

À cause de son habileté, il fera prospérer la ruse dans sa main ; il s’enorgueillira dans son cœur, et en pleine paix il fera périr beaucoup de gens ; il s’élèvera contre le prince des princes, et il sera brisé sans la main d’un homme.

Through his policy he will cause deceit to prosper in his hand. He will magnify himself in his heart, and he will destroy many in their security. He will also stand up against the prince of princes; but he will be broken without hand.

La vision touchant le soir et le matin, qui a été exposée c’est la vérité. Mais toi, serre la vision, car elle se rapporte à un temps éloigné. »

“The vision of the evenings and mornings which has been told is true; but seal up the vision, for it belongs to many days to come.”

Et moi, Daniel, je tombai en défaillance et fus malade pendant plusieurs jours ; puis je me levai et m’occupai des affaires du roi. J’étais stupéfait de ce que j’avais vu, et personne ne le comprenait.

I, Daniel, fainted, and was sick for some days. Then I rose up, and did the king’s business. I wondered at the vision, but no one understood it.

Chapitre 9

La première année de Darius, fils d’Assuérus, de la race des Mèdes, qui fut établi roi sur le royaume des Chaldéens ;

In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the offspring of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans,

la première année de son règne, moi, Daniel, je portai mon attention, en lisant les livres, sur le nombre des années au sujet desquelles la parole de Yahweh avait été adressée au prophète Jérémie, et qui devaient s’accomplir sur les ruines de Jérusalem, soixante-dix ans.

in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years about which Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah the prophet, for the accomplishing of the desolations of Jerusalem, even seventy years.

Et je tournai ma face vers le Seigneur Dieu, me disposant à la prière et à la supplication par le jeûne, et avec le sac et la cendre.

I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and petitions, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

Je priai Yahweh, mon Dieu, et je fis confession, et je dis : « Ah ! Seigneur, Dieu grand et redoutable, qui gardez l’alliance et la miséricorde à ceux qui vous aiment et qui gardent vos commandements,

I prayed to Yahweh my God, and made confession, and said, “Oh, Lord, the great and dreadful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments,

nous avons péché, nous avons commis l’iniquité, nous avons été méchants et rebelles, nous nous sommes détournés de vos commandements et de vos lois.

we have sinned, and have dealt perversely, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even turning aside from your precepts and from your ordinances.

Nous n’avons pas écouté vos serviteurs les prophètes, qui ont parlé en votre nom à nos rois, à nos chefs, à nos pères et à tout le peuple du pays.

We haven’t listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

À vous, Seigneur, la justice, à nous la confusion de visage, comme c’est le cas aujourd’hui, aux hommes de Juda, aux habitants de Jérusalem et à tout Israël, à ceux qui sont près et à ceux qui sont loin, dans tous les pays où vous les avez chassés, à cause de leurs iniquités qu’ils ont commises contre vous.

“Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but to us confusion of face, as it is today; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, who are near, and who are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against you.

Seigneur, à nous la confusion de visage, à nos rois, à nos chefs, et à nos pères, parce que nous avons péché contre vous.

Lord, to us belongs confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you.

Au Seigneur, notre Dieu, les miséricordes et les pardons, car nous nous sommes révoltés contre vous.

To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness; for we have rebelled against him.

Nous n’avons pas obéi à la voix de Yahweh, notre Dieu, pour suivre ses lois qu’il a mises devant nous par l’intermédiaire de ses serviteurs les prophètes.

We haven’t obeyed Yahweh our God’s voice, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

Tout Israël a transgressé votre loi et s’est détourné pour ne pas écouter votre voix ; alors se sont répandues sur nous la malédiction et l’imprécation qui sont écrites dans la loi de Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, parce que nous avons péché contre lui.

Yes, all Israel have transgressed your law, turning aside, that they should not obey your voice. “Therefore the curse and the oath written in the law of Moses the servant of God has been poured out on us; for we have sinned against him.

Il a tenu ses paroles qu’il a prononcées contre nous et contre nos juges qui nous jugeaient, en faisant venir sur nous une calamité si grande, qu’il n’en est jamais arrivé sous le ciel de pareille à celle qui est arrivée à Jérusalem.

He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us, and against our judges who judged us, by bringing on us a great evil; for under the whole sky, such has not been done as has been done to Jerusalem.

Comme il est écrit dans la loi de Dieu, toute cette calamité est venue sur nous, et nous n’avons pas cherché à apaiser Yahweh, notre Dieu, en nous détournant de nos iniquités et en nous rendant attentifs à votre Vérité.

As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil has come on us. Yet have we not entreated the favor of Yahweh our God, that we should turn from our iniquities, and have discernment in your truth.

Et Yahweh a veillé sur le mal, et il l’a fait venir sur nous ; car Yahweh, notre Dieu, est juste dans toutes ses œuvres qu’il a faites, et nous n’avons pas écouté sa voix.

Therefore Yahweh has watched over the evil, and brought it on us; for Yahweh our God is righteous in all his works which he does, and we have not obeyed his voice.

Maintenant, Seigneur, notre Dieu, qui avez tiré votre peuple du pays d’Égypte par votre main puissante, et qui vous êtes fait un nom, comme il est aujourd’hui, nous avons péché, nous avons été méchants.

“Now, Lord our God, who has brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and have gotten yourself renown, as it is today; we have sinned. We have done wickedly.

Seigneur, puissent, selon toutes vos justices, votre colère et votre indignation se détourner de votre ville de Jérusalem, votre montagne sainte ; car c’est à cause de nos péchés et des iniquités de nos pères que Jérusalem et votre peuple sont en opprobre à tous ceux qui nous entourent.

Lord, according to all your righteousness, let your anger and please let your wrath be turned away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people have become a reproach to all who are around us.

Maintenant, écoutez, ô notre Dieu, la prière de votre serviteur et ses supplications, et faites briller votre visage sur votre sanctuaire dévasté, pour l’amour du Seigneur.

“Now therefore, our God, listen to the prayer of your servant, and to his petitions, and cause your face to shine on your sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.

Mon Dieu, prêtez l’oreille et écoutez ; ouvrez vos yeux et voyez nos désolations et la ville sur laquelle votre nom a été prononcé. Car ce n’est pas à cause de nos justices que nous déposons devant vous nos supplications, mais à cause de vos grandes miséricordes.

My God, turn your ear, and hear. Open your eyes, and see our desolations, and the city which is called by your name; for we do not present our petitions before you for our righteousness, but for your great mercies’ sake.

Seigneur, entendez ; Seigneur, pardonnez ; Seigneur, soyez attentif et agissez ; ne tardez pas, à cause de vous-même, ô mon Dieu ; car votre nom a été prononcé sur votre ville et votre peuple ! »

Lord, hear. Lord, forgive. Lord, listen and do. Don’t defer, for your own sake, my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.”

Comme je parlais encore, priant, confessant mon péché et le péché de mon peuple d’Israël, et déposant ma supplication devant Yahweh, mon Dieu, pour la sainte montagne de mon Dieu ;

While I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Yahweh my God for the holy mountain of my God;

comme je parlais encore dans ma prière, cet homme, Gabriel, que j’avais vu auparavant en vision, s’approcha de moi d’un vol rapide vers le temps de l’oblation du soir.

yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening offering.

Il m’instruisit, me parla et dit : « Daniel, je suis venu en ce moment pour t’ouvrir l’intelligence.

He instructed me, and talked with me, and said, Daniel, “I have now come to give you wisdom and understanding.

Dès le commencement de ta prière, une parole est sortie, et moi je suis venu pour te la faire connaître, car tu es un homme favorisé de Dieu.

At the beginning of your petitions the commandment went out, and I have come to tell you; for you are greatly beloved. Therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision.

Sois donc attentif à la parole et comprends la vision. Soixante-dix semaines ont été déterminées sur ton peuple et sur ta ville sainte pour enfermer la prévarication, pour sceller les péchés et pour expier l’iniquité, et pour amener la justice éternelle, pour sceller vision et prophète et pour oindre le Saint des saints.

“Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to finish disobedience, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.

Sache donc et comprends : depuis la sortie d’une parole ordonnant de rebâtir Jérusalem jusqu’à un oint, un chef, il y a sept semaines, et soixante-deux semaines ; elle sera rebâtie, places et enceinte, dans la détresse des temps.

“Know therefore and discern that from the going out of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem to the Anointed One, the prince, will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will be built again, with street and moat, even in troubled times.

Et après soixante-deux semaines, un oint sera retranché, et personne pour lui. Et le peuple d’un chef qui viendra détruira la ville et le sanctuaire, et sa fin sera dans l’inondation, et jusqu’à la fin il y aura guerre, ce qui est décrété touchant la dévastation.

After the sixty-two weeks the Anointed One will be cut off, and will have nothing. The people of the prince who come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end will be with a flood, and war will be even to the end. Desolations are determined.

Il conclura une alliance ferme avec un grand nombre pendant une semaine ; et, au milieu de la semaine, il fera cesser le sacrifice et l’oblation, et sur l’aile des abominations viendra un dévastateur, et cela jusqu’à ce que la destruction et ce qui a été décrété se répandent sur le dévasté.

He will make a firm covenant with many for one week. In the middle of the week he will cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease. On the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate; and even to the full end, and that determined, wrath will be poured out on the desolate.”

Chapitre 10

La troisième année de Cyrus, roi de Perse, une parole fut révélée à Daniel, qui avait été nommé Baltassar ; cette parole est véritable, et elle annonçait une grande guerre. Il comprit la parole et il eut l’intelligence de la vision :

In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed to Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, even a great warfare. He understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.

En ces jours-là, moi, Daniel, je fus dans le deuil pendant trois semaines de jours.

In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three whole weeks.

Je ne mangeai aucun mets délicat ; il n’entra dans ma bouche ni viande, ni vin, et je ne m’oignis point jusqu’à ce que les trois semaines de jours fussent accomplies.

I ate no pleasant bread. No meat or wine came into my mouth. I didn’t anoint myself at all, until three whole weeks were fulfilled.

Le vingt-quatrième jour du premier mois, j’étais sur le bord du grand fleuve, qui est le Tigre.

In the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel,

Je levai les yeux et je regardai : et voici un homme vêtu de lin, les reins ceints d’une ceinture d’or d’Uphaz.

I lifted up my eyes, and looked, and behold, there was a man clothed in linen, whose thighs were adorned with pure gold of Uphaz.

Son corps était comme le chrysolithe, son visage avait l’aspect de l’éclair, ses yeux étaient comme des torches de feu, ses bras et ses pieds avaient l’aspect de l’airain poli, et sa voix, quand il parlait, était comme la voix d’une multitude.

His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as flaming torches. His arms and his feet were like burnished brass. The voice of his words was like the voice of a multitude.

Moi, Daniel, je vis seul l’apparition, et les hommes qui étaient avec moi ne virent pas l’apparition, mais une grande frayeur tomba sur eux, et ils s’enfuirent pour se cacher.

I, Daniel, alone saw the vision; for the men who were with me didn’t see the vision; but a great quaking fell on them, and they fled to hide themselves.

Et moi, je restai seul et je vis cette grande apparition, et il ne resta plus en moi de force ; mon visage changea de couleur et se décomposa sans conserver aucune force.

So I was left alone, and saw this great vision. No strength remained in me; for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength.

J’entendis le son de ses paroles et, en entendant le son de ses paroles, je tombai assoupi, la face contre terre.

Yet I heard the voice of his words. When I heard the voice of his words, then I fell into a deep sleep on my face, with my face toward the ground.

Et voici qu’une main me toucha et me fit dresser sur mes genoux et sur les paumes de mes mains.

Behold, a hand touched me, which set me on my knees and on the palms of my hands.

He said to me, Daniel, you greatly beloved man, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright; for I have been sent to you, now. When he had spoken this word to me, I stood trembling.

Il me dit : « Ne crains point, Daniel, car dès le premier jour où tu as appliqué ton cœur à comprendre et à t’humilier devant ton Dieu, tes paroles ont été entendues, et moi, je suis venu à cause de tes paroles.

Then he said to me, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel; for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard. I have come for your words’ sake.

Mais le chef du royaume de Perse s’est tenu devant moi vingt et un jours, et voici que Michel, un des premiers chefs, est venu à mon secours, et je suis resté là auprès des rois de Perse.

But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; but, behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me because I remained there with the kings of Persia.

Et je suis venu pour te faire comprendre ce qui doit arriver à ton peuple à la fin des jours ; car c’est encore une vision pour des jours lointains.

Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days; for the vision is yet for many days.”

Pendant qu’il parlait avec moi en ces termes, je tournais la face vers la terre et je restais muet.

When he had spoken these words to me, I set my face toward the ground, and was mute.

Et voici : comme une ressemblance de fils de l’homme toucha mes lèvres, et j’ouvris la bouche et je parlai ; je dis à celui qui se tenait devant moi : « Mon seigneur, à cette apparition, les angoisses m’ont saisi et je n’ai conservé aucune force.

Behold, one in the likeness of the sons of men touched my lips. Then I opened my mouth, and spoke and said to him who stood before me, “My lord, by reason of the vision my sorrows have overtaken me, and I retain no strength.

Comment le serviteur de mon seigneur que voici pourrait-il parler à mon seigneur que voilà ? En ce moment, il n’y a plus de force en moi et il ne reste plus de souffle en moi. »

For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? For as for me, immediately there remained no strength in me. There was no breath left in me.”

Alors celui qui avait la ressemblance d’un homme me toucha de nouveau et me fortifia.

Then one like the appearance of a man touched me again, and he strengthened me.

Puis il me dit : « Ne crains point, homme favorisé de Dieu ; que la paix soit avec toi ! Courage ! courage ! » Pendant qu’il parlait avec moi, je repris des forces et je dis : « Que mon seigneur parle, car tu m’as fortifié. »

He said, “Greatly beloved man, don’t be afraid. Peace be to you. Be strong. Yes, be strong.” When he spoke to me, I was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord speak; for you have strengthened me.”

Il me dit : « Sais-tu pourquoi je suis venu vers toi ? Maintenant, je vais retourner combattre le chef de la Perse ; et, au moment où je m’en irai, voici le chef de Javan qui viendra.

Then he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? Now I will return to fight with the prince of Persia. When I go out, behold, the prince of Greece will come.

Mais je te déclarerai ce qui est écrit dans le livre de vérité ; et il n’y en a pas un qui se tienne avec moi contre ceux-là, sinon Michel, votre chef.

But I will tell you that which is inscribed in the writing of truth. There is no one who holds with me against these, but Michael your prince.

Chapitre 11

Et moi, dans la première année de Darius le Mède, je me tenais auprès de lui pour le soutenir et le fortifier.

“As for me, in the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to confirm and strengthen him.

Maintenant je vais te déclarer la vérité. Voici que trois rois se lèveront encore pour la Perse ; le quatrième possédera de plus grandes richesses que tous les autres et, quand il sera puissant par ses richesses, il soulèvera tout contre le royaume de Javan.

“Now will I show you the truth. Behold, three more kings will stand up in Persia; and the fourth will be far richer than all of them. When he has grown strong through his riches, he will stir up all against the realm of Greece.

Et il s’élèvera un roi vaillant, qui aura une grande puissance et fera ce qui lui plaira.

A mighty king will stand up, who will rule with great dominion, and do according to his will.

Dès qu’il se sera élevé, son royaume se brisera et sera divisé aux quatre vents du ciel, sans appartenir à ses descendants et sans avoir la même puissance qu’il avait eue ; car son royaume sera déchiré, et il passera à d’autres qu’eux.

When he stands up, his kingdom will be broken, and will be divided toward the four winds of the sky, but not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion with which he ruled; for his kingdom will be plucked up, even for others besides these.

Le roi du Midi deviendra fort, ainsi qu’un de ses généraux, lequel deviendra plus fort que lui et sera puissant ; sa puissance sera une grande puissance.

“The king of the south will be strong. One of his princes will become stronger than him, and have dominion. His dominion will be a great dominion.

Au bout de quelques années, ils s’allieront, et la fille du roi du Midi viendra vers le roi du Septentrion pour établir un accord. Mais elle ne conservera pas l’appui d’un bras, car il ne tiendra pas, non plus que son propre bras ; et elle sera livrée, elle et ceux qui l’avaient amenée, celui qui lui avait donné naissance et celui qui l’avait soutenue pendant quelque temps.

At the end of years they will join themselves together; and the daughter of the king of the south will come to the king of the north to make an agreement; but she will not retain the strength of her arm. He will also not stand, nor will his arm; but she will be given up, with those who brought her, and he who became the father of her, and he who strengthened her in those times.

Un des rejetons de ses racines s’élèvera à sa place ; il viendra à l’armée, il entrera dans la forteresse du roi du Septentrion, il les traitera à son gré et il l’emportera.

“But out of a shoot from her roots one will stand up in his place, who will come to the army, and will enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and will deal against them, and will prevail.

Leurs dieux mêmes, leurs images de fonte et leurs vases précieux d’argent et d’or, il les emmènera captifs en Égypte, et il prévaudra plusieurs années sur le roi du Septentrion.

He will also carry their gods, with their molten images, and with their goodly vessels of silver and of gold, captive into Egypt. He will refrain some years from the king of the north.

Celui-ci entrera dans le royaume du Midi, et il s’en retournera dans son pays.

He will come into the realm of the king of the south, but he will return into his own land.

Mais ses fils s’armeront pour la guerre et rassembleront une grande multitude de troupes ; l’un d’eux viendra, il inondera, il envahira, puis il reviendra, et poussera les hostilités contre la forteresse.

His sons will wage war, and will assemble a multitude of great forces, which will come on, and overflow, and pass through. They will return and wage war, even to his fortress.

Le roi du Midi s’irritera, il partira et combattra contre lui, contre le roi du Septentrion ; il lèvera de grandes troupes, et la troupe du roi du Septentrion lui sera livrée.

“The king of the south will be moved with anger, and will come out and fight with him, even with the king of the north. He will send out a great multitude, and the multitude will be given into his hand.

Devant la multitude levée contre lui, son courage s’élèvera ; il en fera tomber des milliers, mais il n’en sera pas plus fort.

The multitude will be lifted up, and his heart will be exalted. He will cast down tens of thousands, but he won’t prevail.

Car le roi du Septentrion rassemblera de nouveau des troupes plus nombreuses que les premières et, au bout d’un certain nombre d’années, il se mettra en marche avec une grande armée et un train considérable.

The king of the north will return, and will send out a multitude greater than the former. He will come on at the end of the times, even of years, with a great army and with much substance.

En ces temps-là beaucoup de gens s’élèveront contre le roi du Midi, et des hommes violents de ton peuple se lèveront pour accomplir la vision, et ils tomberont.

“In those times many will stand up against the king of the south. Also the children of the violent among your people will lift themselves up to establish the vision; but they will fall.

Le roi du Septentrion viendra, il élèvera des terrasses et prendra une ville fortifiée ; les bras du Midi ne tiendront pas, non plus que sa troupe d’élite ; il n’y aura pas de force pour résister.

So the king of the north will come and cast up a mound, and take a well-fortified city. The forces of the south won’t stand, neither will his chosen people, neither will there be any strength to stand.

Celui qui aura marché contre lui fera ce qui lui plaira, et personne ne tiendra devant lui ; il s’arrêtera dans le glorieux pays, et la destruction sera dans sa main.

But he who comes against him will do according to his own will, and no one will stand before him. He will stand in the glorious land, and destruction will be in his hand.

Il se décidera à venir avec la force de tout son royaume et il fera un arrangement avec lui ; et il lui donnera une jeune fille pour amener sa ruine ; mais cela ne réussira pas, et ce royaume ne sera point à lui.

He will set his face to come with the strength of his whole kingdom, and with him equitable conditions. He will perform them. He will give him the daughter of women, to corrupt her; but she will not stand, and won’t be for him.

Puis il se tournera vers les îles et en prendra beaucoup ; mais un capitaine lui fera cesser son injure et, sans avoir reçu son injure, il la lui rendra.

After this he will turn his face to the islands, and will take many; but a prince will cause the reproach offered by him to cease. Yes, moreover, he will cause his reproach to turn on him.

Il se tournera vers les forteresses de son pays ; mais il trébuchera, il tombera, et on ne le trouvera plus.

Then he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land; but he will stumble and fall, and won’t be found.

Un autre se tiendra à sa place, qui fera passer un exacteur dans le lieu qui est la gloire du royaume, et en quelques jours il sera brisé, et ce ne sera ni par la colère ni par la guerre.

“Then one who will cause a tax collector to pass through the kingdom to maintain its glory will stand up in his place; but within few days he shall be destroyed, not in anger, and not in battle.

À sa place se tiendra un homme méprisé, à qui on n’aura pas donné la dignité royale ; il viendra sans bruit et s’emparera de la royauté par des intrigues.

“In his place a contemptible person will stand up, to whom they had not given the honor of the kingdom; but he will come in time of security, and will obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

Les forces de l’inondation seront submergées devant lui et seront brisées, et aussi le chef de l’alliance.

The overwhelming forces will be overwhelmed from before him, and will be broken. Yes, also the prince of the covenant.

Sans tenir compte de l’alliance conclue avec lui, il agira de ruse, il se mettra en marche et aura le dessus avec peu de gens.

After the treaty made with him he will work deceitfully; for he will come up, and will become strong, with a small people.

Il viendra sans bruit dans les plus riches provinces du pays ; il fera ce que n’avaient pas fait ses pères, ni les pères de ses pères, il leur distribuera butin, dépouilles et richesses, et il formera des projets contre les forteresses, et cela jusqu’à un certain temps.

In time of security he will come even on the fattest places of the province. He will do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers. He will scatter among them prey, plunder, and substance. Yes, he will devise his plans against the strongholds, even for a time.

Il excitera sa force et son courage contre le roi du Midi, à la tête d’une grande armée. Et le roi du Midi s’engagera dans la guerre avec une armée nombreuse et très forte ; mais il ne tiendra pas, parce qu’on formera des complots contre lui.

“He will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south will wage war in battle with an exceedingly great and mighty army; but he won’t stand; for they will devise plans against him.

Ceux qui mangent les mets de sa table le briseront, son armée se dissipera, et beaucoup d’hommes tomberont frappés de mort.

Yes, those who eat of his dainties will destroy him, and his army will be swept away. Many will fall down slain.

Les deux rois chercheront dans leur cœur à se nuire, et, à une même table, ils se diront des mensonges ; mais cela ne réussira pas, car la fin ne viendra qu’au temps marqué.

As for both these kings, their hearts will be to do mischief, and they will speak lies at one table; but it won’t prosper, for the end will still be at the appointed time.

Il retournera dans son pays avec de grandes richesses ; son cœur médite le mal contre l’alliance sainte, et il le fait, et il rentre dans son pays.

Then he will return into his land with great wealth. His heart will be against the holy covenant. He will take action, and return to his own land.

Au temps marqué, il arrivera de nouveau dans le Midi ; mais cette dernière campagne ne sera pas comme la première.

“He will return at the appointed time, and come into the south; but it won’t be in the latter time as it was in the former.

Des navires de Céthim viendront contre lui et il perdra courage ; il s’en retournera et il s’irritera contre l’alliance sainte ; et il agira, et il s’entendra encore une fois avec ceux qui auront abandonné l’alliance.

For ships of Kittim will come against him. Therefore he will be grieved, and will return, and have indignation against the holy covenant, and will take action. He will even return, and have regard to those who forsake the holy covenant.

Des troupes envoyées par lui se tiendront là ; elles profaneront le sanctuaire, la forteresse ; elles feront cesser le sacrifice perpétuel et dresseront l’abomination du dévastateur.

“Forces will stand on his part, and they will profane the sanctuary, even the fortress, and will take away the continual burnt offering. Then they will set up the abomination that makes desolate.

Par des flatteries, il gagnera à l’idolâtrie les violateurs de l’alliance ; mais le peuple de ceux qui connaissent leur Dieu tiendra ferme et agira.

He will corrupt those who do wickedly against the covenant by flatteries; but the people who know their God will be strong, and take action.

Ceux qui sont intelligents parmi le peuple instruiront la multitude ; mais ils tomberont par l’épée et la flamme, par la captivité et le pillage, un certain temps.

“Those who are wise among the people will instruct many; yet they will fall by the sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder, many days.

Pendant qu’ils tomberont ainsi, ils seront secourus d’un léger secours, et plusieurs se joindront à eux, mais avec hypocrisie.

Now when they fall, they will be helped with a little help; but many will join themselves to them with flatteries.

Et parmi ces intelligents, il y en a qui tomberont, afin qu’ils soient éprouvés, purifiés et blanchis, jusqu’au temps de la fin, car on ne sera pas encore au terme fixé.

Some of those who are wise will fall, to refine them, and to purify, and to make them white, even to the time of the end; because it is yet for the time appointed.

Le roi fera ce qui lui plaira, il s’élèvera et se grandira au-dessus de tout dieu, et contre le Dieu des dieux il dira des choses prodigieuses ; et il prospérera, jusqu’à ce que la colère soit consommée ; car ce qui est décrété doit s’accomplir.

“The king will do according to his will. He will exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and will speak marvelous things against the God of gods. He will prosper until the indignation is accomplished; for that which is determined will be done.

Il n’aura égard ni aux dieux de ses pères, ni à la divinité chère aux femmes ; il n’aura égard à aucun dieu ; car il se grandira au-dessus de tout.

He won’t regard the gods of his fathers, or the desire of women, or regard any god; for he will magnify himself above all.

Mais il honorera le dieu des forteresses en son lieu ; le dieu que n’ont pas connu ses pères, il l’honorera avec de l’or, de l’argent, des pierres précieuses et des joyaux.

But in his place he will honor the god of fortresses. He will honor a god whom his fathers didn’t know with gold, silver, and with precious stones and pleasant things.

Il attaquera les remparts des forteresses avec le dieu étranger ; ceux qui le reconnaîtront, il les comblera d’honneurs, il les fera dominer sur la multitude et leur distribuera des terres en récompense.

He will deal with the strongest fortresses by the help of a foreign god. He will increase with glory whoever acknowledges him. He will cause them to rule over many, and will divide the land for a price.

Au temps de la fin, le roi du Midi se heurtera avec lui. Le roi du Septentrion fondra sur lui, avec des chars et des cavaliers et de nombreux vaisseaux ; il s’avancera dans les terres et passera en débordant.

“At the time of the end the king of the south will contend with him; and the king of the north will come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, with horsemen, and with many ships. He will enter into the countries, and will overflow and pass through.

Il entrera dans le glorieux pays, et beaucoup tomberont sous ses coups, mais ceux-ci échapperont à sa main : Edom et Moab et la fleur des enfants d’Ammon.

He will enter also into the glorious land, and many countries will be overthrown; but these will be delivered out of his hand: Edom, Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.

Il étendra la main sur les pays, et le pays d’Égypte n’échappera point.

He will also stretch out his hand on the countries. The land of Egypt won’t escape.

Il se rendra maître de tous les trésors d’or et d’argent et de toutes les choses précieuses de l’Égypte ; les Libyens et les Ethiopiens marcheront à sa suite.

But he will have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt. The Libyans and the Ethiopians will be at his steps.

Mais des nouvelles de l’orient et du septentrion viendront le troubler, et il partira avec une grande fureur pour détruire et exterminer une foule de gens.

But news out of the east and out of the north will trouble him; and he will go out with great fury to destroy and utterly to sweep away many.

Il dressera les tentes de son palais entre les mers, vers la montagne sainte et glorieuse. Puis il arrivera à sa fin, et personne ne le secourra.

He will plant the tents of his palace between the sea and the glorious holy mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.

Chapitre 12

En ce temps-là se lèvera Michel, le grand chef, qui tient pour les enfants de ton peuple, et ce sera un temps de détresse telle qu’il n’y en a point eu de pareille, depuis qu’il existe une nation jusqu’à ce temps-là. Et en ce temps-là, ton peuple sera sauvé, quiconque sera trouvé inscrit dans le livre.

“At that time Michael will stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and there will be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time. At that time your people will be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book.

Et beaucoup de ceux qui dorment dans la poussière se réveilleront, les uns pour une vie éternelle, les autres pour les opprobres, pour la réprobation éternelle.

Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Ceux qui auront été intelligents brilleront comme la splendeur du firmament et ceux qui en auront conduit beaucoup à la justice seront comme les étoiles, éternellement et toujours.

Those who are wise will shine as the brightness of the expanse. Those who turn many to righteousness will shine as the stars forever and ever.

Et toi, Daniel, serre les paroles et scelle le livre jusqu’au temps de la fin. Beaucoup le scruteront, et la connaissance s’accroîtra. »

But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end. Many will run back and forth, and knowledge will be increased.”

Moi, Daniel, je regardai et voici que deux autres hommes se tenaient debout, l’un sur une rive du fleuve, l’autre sur l’autre rive du fleuve.

Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others stood, one on the river bank on this side, and the other on the river bank on that side.

L’un d’eux parla à l’homme vêtu de lin, qui était au-dessus des eaux du fleuve : « Jusqu’à quand le terme de ces choses merveilleuses ? »

One said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How long will it be to the end of these wonders?”

Et j’entendis l’homme vêtu de lin qui était au-dessus des eaux ; il leva vers le ciel sa main droite et sa main gauche, et il jura par celui qui vit éternellement que ce serait dans un temps, des temps et une moitié de temps, et que, quand on aurait achevé de briser la force du peuple saint, alors s’accompliront toutes ces choses.

I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by him who lives forever that it will be for a time, times, and a half; and when they have finished breaking in pieces the power of the holy people, all these things will be finished.

Et moi, j’entendis, mais sans comprendre, et je dis : « Mon seigneur, quelle sera la fin de ces choses ? »

I heard, but I didn’t understand. Then I said, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these things?”

Il dit : « Va, Daniel, car les paroles sont serrées et scellées jusqu’au temps de la fin.

He said, “Go your way, Daniel; for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end.

Il y en aura beaucoup qui seront purifiés, blanchis et éprouvés ; et les méchants feront le mal, et aucun méchant ne comprendra ; mais les intelligents comprendront.

Many will purify themselves, and make themselves white, and be refined; but the wicked will do wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand; but those who are wise will understand.

Depuis le temps où sera interrompu le sacrifice perpétuel, et où sera dressée l’abomination du dévastateur, il y aura mille deux cent quatre-vingt-dix jours.

“From the time that the continual burnt offering is taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there will be one thousand two hundred ninety days.

Heureux celui qui attendra et arrivera jusqu’à mille trois cent trente-cinq jours !

Blessed is he who waits, and comes to the one thousand three hundred thirty-five days.

Toi, va à ta fin et repose-toi ; tu seras debout pour ton héritage à la fin des jours. » Jusqu’ici nous avons lu Daniel dans le texte Hébreu ; ce qui suit jusqu’à la fin du livre, a été traduit d’après l’édition de Théodotion.

“But go you your way until the end; for you will rest, and will stand in your inheritance at the end of the days.”
